Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Distinguishing Vital or Mental Desire or Demand from Aspiration of the Psychic Being
Transcript
- 0:00Desire can take many forms, some of them subtle inasmuch as they
- 0:06are linked to prayer and thus seem to confirm the aspiration.
- 0:11There's a subtle form of bargaining that can take place,
- 0:14where the dedication of the seeker is tied to the divine,
- 0:17providing a specific anticipated form of realization, support, or
- 0:23result. In some cases this is couched in
- 0:27such a way as to make it seem that the bargaining is so that
- 0:32the individual can better carry out the divine will as the
- 0:36individual understands it. This is a form of desire that
- 0:40stems from the mental or vital part of the nature, not directly
- 0:45from the soul or psychic being. If we look carefully at the form
- 0:49that the aspiration or prayer takes, it is actually not too
- 0:53difficult to distinguish those that either originate in the
- 0:57mental or vital being, or which are at least influenced and
- 1:01coloured by them. The psychic formation of
- 1:04aspiration is pure, undemanding, quiet and receptive and ready to
- 1:11give itself to the Divine without preconditions.
- 1:16This implies that the seeker also does not have expectation
- 1:20about a particular form, type or time for a result to be given.
- 1:26The Divine acts according to his own light and his own time, and
- 1:31the psychic being accepts that without impatience, disturbance,
- 1:37or any loss of faith, Sri Aurobindo notes quote, Demand
- 1:44and desire are only two different aspects of the same
- 1:47thing. Nor is it necessary that a
- 1:50feeling should be agitated or restless to be a desire.
- 1:55It can be, On the contrary, quietly fixed and persistent or
- 2:00persistently recurrent. Demand or desire comes from the
- 2:04mental or the vital. But a psychic or spiritual need
- 2:08is a different thing. The psychic does not demand or
- 2:12desire it aspires. It does not make conditions for
- 2:17its surrender or withdraw if its aspiration is not immediately
- 2:22satisfied, for the psychic has complete trust in the Divine or
- 2:27in the guru, and can wait for the right time or the hour of
- 2:31the divine grace. The psychic has an insistence of
- 2:35its own, but it puts its pressure not on the divine, but
- 2:40on the Nature, placing a finger of light on all the defects
- 2:44there that stand in the way of the realization, sifting out all
- 2:49that is mixed, ignorant or imperfect in the experience or
- 2:54in the movements of the Yoga, and never satisfied with itself
- 2:59or with the nature till it has got it perfectly open to the
- 3:03Divine, free from all forms of ego, surrendered, simple and
- 3:08right in the attitude and all the movements.
- 3:12This is what has to be established entirely in the mind
- 3:16and vital and in the physical consciousness before super
- 3:20mentalization of the whole nature is possible.
- 3:24Otherwise what 1 gets is more or less brilliant, half luminous,
- 3:29half cloudy illuminations and experiences on the mental and
- 3:33vital and physical planes, inspired either from some larger
- 3:38mind or larger vital, or at the best from the mental reaches
- 3:43above the human that intervene between the intellect and the
- 3:47overmind. These can be very stimulating
- 3:51and satisfying up to a certain point, and are good for those
- 3:56who want some spiritual realization on these planes.
- 4:00But the Super mental realization is something much more difficult
- 4:04and exacting in its conditions, and the most difficult of all is
- 4:09to bring it down to the physical level.
