- 0:14Hello and welcome to Arguing Ever After.
- 0:18I'm Luke and this is my witchy woman, Amber.
- 0:23Hello. Together we are the Lord and
- 0:25Lady who lock horns. The counting Countess of
- 0:28contention. The Duke and Duchess of
- 0:30Disagreement. And the king and queen of
- 0:32quarrels. We have been together since the
- 0:35world premiere of Leprechauns 4IN Space.
- 0:40We've been arguing about pretty much everything for a very long
- 0:45time, and we're still together and happy.
- 0:48In this entertainment only podcast, we will bicker about
- 0:51all things big and small and the audience gets the final say on
- 0:54who the winner is. We do not claim to be
- 0:57relationship experts by any means.
- 1:00We will debate lots of things, many of which have been
- 1:02submitted by our listeners. So if you have a topic that you
- 1:05want us non professionals to debate over before you try it at
- 1:08home, please send it to us at arguingeverafter@gmail.com.
- 1:13Perhaps this completely unscientific method of letting
- 1:15the masses decide who is right will help you win your argument
- 1:20before you even have it. And so here we are, episode #14.
- 1:2614. That's a whole bunch.
- 1:29It is, it is, and it's our second episode of Spooky Month.
- 1:33It is, as you can tell, we have dressed for the occasion.
- 1:36If you're watching on video and if you're not, you really
- 1:39should. Yes, Amber is wearing the most
- 1:42epic witch hat maybe ever created.
- 1:46It's really fantastic it it was made or purchased, but I'm going
- 1:53to say made because I feel like it must have been made in which
- 1:57city itself. Which city?
- 1:58Salem, MA. Yes, yes.
- 2:01And it has. Well, obviously it's a big Black
- 2:05Hat, but it's got a lot of beauty on it.
- 2:08Yeah, there's sparkles. There's some sparkly nutting on
- 2:12there, but the reason I was so attracted to this witch hat is
- 2:17that there is a beautiful mermaid skeleton on the side and
- 2:23it was just great. Then when we were in Salem,
- 2:27there were a couple places that made these incredible witch's
- 2:30hats, and I mean handmade, just wonderful.
- 2:33It was worth every cent that I don't remember how much I spent
- 2:36because. It was worth.
- 2:37It it was worth it, Yeah, on the.
- 2:40Back it has a cute little spider and a couple of dead roses.
- 2:44Yes, yes. I mean, it's a beautiful,
- 2:47beautiful hatch that I don't have enough occasion to wear.
- 2:54But maybe I'll figure it out. Maybe I'll find more so.
- 2:56I'm both wearing our Salem sweatshirts.
- 2:58Yeah, I have more than one. Mine's got that thing that's on
- 3:02all the old gravestones. I I can't remember if it's
- 3:05called the Angel of Death or. Something but the.
- 3:07Skull with the with the Angel wings on it.
- 3:10It's pretty. Cool.
- 3:11Yeah, when we went to Salem, we had a lot of fun.
- 3:15That sounds weird, looking at the old cemeteries and seeing
- 3:19the old gravestones that they had and the momento Mori, all of
- 3:26those things. There were several great sayings
- 3:29and it was it was really interesting.
- 3:32I'm glad that I looked at those old gravestones.
- 3:36It was, I mean kind of the art on it, you know, you know, very
- 3:42hand done art, you know, today our gravestones or you know, I
- 3:47don't know, I but you know not. As cool not.
- 3:50As cool, but you know, maybe. I mean, I plan on getting
- 3:52cremated, but if you were to make me a great gravestone I
- 3:55would love one of those old fashioned Y kinds just sitting
- 3:58in the cemetery. You need an Angel of death.
- 4:01I want, yeah, an Angel of death on there or some of the cool
- 4:04little skeletons. We don't do that anymore.
- 4:06Which is. I have a really cool coffee mug
- 4:09that has a bunch of like gravestone imagery on it.
- 4:13When I saw that, when I saw that coffee mug, yeah.
- 4:17And I would just call it a regular mug.
- 4:20I was like, oh, I think I need this.
- 4:22And then you were like, oh, I just found my new coffee mug.
- 4:26Sure did. Not I just found Amber's new
- 4:29coffee mug. I just found my new coffee mug
- 4:31because Amber doesn't drink coffee.
- 4:34Well, it's. True, I was sort of bummed out
- 4:37'cause I really liked it. And you know what?
- 4:39Oh, now I'm thinking. What?
- 4:41We could like get rid of all of our coffee mugs and just have
- 4:44that be our coffee mug. Like not that like get a whole
- 4:47bunch of that one. Imagine.
- 4:49Copies of it, yeah. Imagine that.
- 4:51That would be nice. I would like that.
- 4:53It has other stuff on there. It's one of the things I like.
- 4:57I don't know how to say it correctly in Latin, but it's
- 5:00Fujit aura, which means time flies.
- 5:03Oh. That's interesting.
- 5:05Yeah, it's a good one. Yeah.
- 5:07And memento Mori, obviously. And it does have like little
- 5:11skeletons. One of the things says tickets
- 5:15Every every perfect body has only 218 bones.
- 5:22That's on one of the gravestone imprintings.
- 5:24There's a bunch of good ones out there.
- 5:25And they're, they're taken from grapes, like old grapes.
- 5:28It's not just made-up stuff, but it's taken from old graves,
- 5:31which is kind of cool. I do want to say usually we go
- 5:36through and we'll talk about new places.
- 5:40However, we are recording these a little differently than we
- 5:46usually do. That's true.
- 5:48So we're not going to have like new winners and losers, most
- 5:53likely. No, we we won't and we won't
- 5:56have new places right now. Doesn't mean we won't get them
- 5:59between now and then when there's.
- 6:03Some free time to do. We're banking a couple of
- 6:05recordings. Yes, yes.
- 6:07So and when this airs, I'm sure there will be, but currently as
- 6:13I speak right this moment. This moment.
- 6:16We don't have any listeners from Massachusetts, and I hope that
- 6:21this is going to make it happen. We got to get it going.
- 6:24Right, because we are lovers of Salem.
- 6:28Absolutely. It was one of my bucket list
- 6:32items in life to go to Salem during the month of October.
- 6:37And we did. And we did.
- 6:38It was awesome. It really was.
- 6:41I would say anyone who's a Halloween lover, go there.
- 6:45There's nothing like it. I mean, I've heard people have
- 6:48gone not during the month of October and they didn't have as
- 6:51great of a time. That's because in October, the
- 6:54city of Salem goes Batty and everything is like Halloween
- 7:02extra. All the houses are decorated,
- 7:04all the public spaces are like decked out.
- 7:07There's crazy gatherings every night.
- 7:11There's tarot readers and and practitioners in the streets
- 7:17with like little St. carts and I mean, it's crazy.
- 7:22Well, and when we were there, this is random and weird, but
- 7:26there was even a Kit Kat commercial being filmed there.
- 7:29There was yeah, yeah, yeah. That was cool.
- 7:32We got to watch that as we walked by a very well decorated
- 7:36house. And it was aired then maybe the
- 7:39following year. But I remember I was like, we
- 7:41were there, we saw that. But they weren't letting people
- 7:44have candy, which was sort of, well, I mean, you're.
- 7:48They did at the world's best Halloween parade.
- 7:52Yes, a couple of them. That parade was legit.
- 7:56It was so good. I think everybody in Salem and
- 8:01like the seven surrounding towns, because Salem's actually
- 8:04pretty small, right? It's super tiny, but I think
- 8:08everybody showed up. For sure.
- 8:11There were like 7 high schools which.
- 8:12I love the high schools. They all dressed up in costumes.
- 8:15There was like 1 marching band and all the boys were Pugsley.
- 8:19Yeah, and all the girls were Wednesday.
- 8:20It was fantastic. Oh, I just just joy, joy.
- 8:25And then while we were there, we had seen a couple.
- 8:29So we drive Jeeps. We may or may not have talked
- 8:31about this. We're kind of dorks about Jeeps.
- 8:34We like Jeeps. And years ago I felt I was being
- 8:39really original and putting it like a skeleton on my Jeep.
- 8:43But we were there and I was seeing these Jeeps with a bunch
- 8:47of skeletons, and I was just like, parked in the parking lot
- 8:51because there's like 2 parking lots.
- 8:52It's a small city. When I tell you it's small, it's
- 8:55small. But I remember taking all these
- 8:57pictures because I was just like, oh, these people know how
- 8:59to live. Yeah.
- 9:01And then during the parade that night, there was, I don't know,
- 9:05it seemed like 20 Jeeps just covered in skeletons and
- 9:10spookiness and all of that. And I thought, I wish we had
- 9:14this where we live. It was great.
- 9:16Some of them had like inflatables coming out the top
- 9:18of their yeah. Yeah, it was so cool it.
- 9:21Was all kind of lights. Yeah, they were playing all the
- 9:24spooky music. The mayor came out dressed up in
- 9:26a costume. Oh I I had such a great time and
- 9:29it was the year after. I just remembered the dog
- 9:33parade. Yes.
- 9:35That was amazing. The.
- 9:37Best costume contest Dog parade, which was first of all the human
- 9:41parade with all the vehicles was like an hour.
- 9:45Yeah, I would say. It was crazy.
- 9:46We couldn't have just kept going.
- 9:47It was crazy. But the dog one also was like an
- 9:51hour. Every dog in the whole state of
- 9:54Massachusetts put a costume on and.
- 9:56Not just dogs, that's true. They had some cats.
- 9:59Cats. We saw a lizard.
- 10:01Yeah, like a big. Yeah.
- 10:03Reddish colored some, I don't know.
- 10:06Was it a Gila monster? Something like that.
- 10:08I have no idea. And there were turtles, Guinea
- 10:10pigs, you remember the dress up Guinea pigs.
- 10:13I mean people just really do it there.
- 10:15And again, that was something I was like, we should have a pet
- 10:20parade. We should for sure.
- 10:22I would go, I would bring my dog.
- 10:26I wouldn't bring my cat, but our kid might.
- 10:31But I, I don't know, like if anyone's into it, if enough
- 10:34people are into it in the area, like let's make it happen.
- 10:37Yes, costume pet parade come in for.
- 10:40It yeah, there were some really good ones I.
- 10:42Just we could maybe maybe the the town of Anoka, MN.
- 10:46They claim to be the capital of Halloween, I think.
- 10:48They are the Halloween capital. Something like that.
- 10:50Yeah. And actually, I did not do any
- 10:54preparation for this show, but I happen to know that there was a
- 10:57boy who went to DC and everybody in the town.
- 11:03And actually I can tell you a little bit more information
- 11:05about Hollow. I won't go too far into that.
- 11:09Actually, maybe we'll do that on another show.
- 11:11But there was a boy who went to DC and the president at the time
- 11:15had seen a button he was wearing.
- 11:16And the boy told the president all about Halloween.
- 11:20And the president was like, Anoka is the Halloween capital,
- 11:24huh? Yeah.
- 11:25Like signed a proclamation. Oh, I did not know that.
- 11:27Yeah. So it is official.
- 11:29It's official but sadly enough I have not been to the Anoka
- 11:36Halloween stuff. Which is crazy 'cause we're like
- 11:3930 ish minutes. This year that's gonna change,
- 11:41but one of the reasons why we are recording these a 'cause we
- 11:46love Halloween, but the we're kind of batch recording them is
- 11:49because we're going to be out of town for a little bit of time to
- 11:55celebrate Halloween. A little extra extra.
- 11:58Yeah, we've been. We've been saving up and
- 12:01waiting. Uh huh.
- 12:03I'm. Gonna go see the new Universal
- 12:06Studios expansion. Yes.
- 12:09Called Epic Universe and the main drive for us to go.
- 12:12Yes. Was the Dark Universe.
- 12:14Yes, which is the Universal Monsters, which they're classic
- 12:21Wow for sure. They're Classic I.
- 12:23Dracula, the Mummy. Frankenstein.
- 12:25The Bride. The bride of Frank.
- 12:27Creature from the Black Lagoon, Invisible Man.
- 12:31Yeah, it's the Phantom of the Opera.
- 12:34Phantom of the Opera. It's a great lineup.
- 12:37It really is. I even in my Home Office, I have
- 12:41pictures of all of the, well, several my favorite monsters
- 12:46from Universal with like a little bit of the cut of the
- 12:49film because, you know, I, I enjoy it.
- 12:51But when I heard that they were making a park to have this
- 12:55dedicated place, I was like, all about it, all about it.
- 13:01So that's, that's the reason why.
- 13:03So, you know if if you're really wondering what the most current
- 13:07stats are. We could put them out in like a
- 13:10promo video. We'll figure it out.
- 13:11We'll at some point in one of our videos, you'll get caught
- 13:15up. We'll get caught up.
- 13:17But the more important message and thought here was let's get
- 13:21them the spooky episodes that they deserve.
- 13:26Absolutely everyone deserves it. Everyone deserves it.
- 13:29I love it. I mean, I feel like the rest of
- 13:32the year is not going to feel as fun to me because these these
- 13:36are my favorite things. The darkest time of the year for
- 13:39you is the brightest. Yes, yes.
- 13:44But so we were talking though about going to Salem and we kind
- 13:47of got derailed when we were in Salem.
- 13:51Yes, in which city? Which?
- 13:54We went to a few museums while we were there.
- 13:57The Witch Museum. The Witch Museum, Yeah.
- 14:00Some great history about the Salem witch trials and the whole
- 14:03back story. And yeah, it's pretty messed up.
- 14:06It really, really was. And if you are thinking
- 14:09animatronics, that's what it's called, yeah, are creepy.
- 14:13You should totally go because they had good creepy
- 14:15animatronics that weren't supposed to be creepy.
- 14:18It was just meant to be educational.
- 14:20But. It was creepy.
- 14:22I yeah, it was a little creepy. I feel like they might have done
- 14:24it on purpose. It was kind of dark in there.
- 14:26No, I feel like it's just that old.
- 14:28That could be, yeah. Wasn't it an old church too?
- 14:31It was. An old church, Yeah.
- 14:31Mm. Hmm.
- 14:33Mm. Hmm.
- 14:34Yeah. Oh, and then we went to the.
- 14:36I don't think they were like the actual grave sites of the was it
- 14:4013 witches? I can't.
- 14:41Oh yes, no, we did. The number of witches but they
- 14:44had, I don't think it was their the thing where they had like
- 14:49people would go and like lay flowers and like the descendants
- 14:52would like write little letters to Yeah.
- 14:55Yeah, it was interesting. Like to their 13th great
- 14:58grandmother who was, you know, accused and convicted of being a
- 15:03witch and killed and. Yeah.
- 15:07Crazy, man, it was crazy. It was the other thing I thought
- 15:10was amazing was I mean, because you could read, you could read
- 15:14the letters because they were just put them on the the
- 15:16gravestones, memorial stones. I'm not sure, but there were a
- 15:21couple even from descendants of of the people who were like,
- 15:25you're a witch. Burn the witch.
- 15:26You know, the accusers. Yeah.
- 15:28And they're like, I'm so sorry that my family accused you of
- 15:33being a witch, witch, witch, witch, witch, witch, witch.
- 15:39Which is powerful to think about.
- 15:41You know it was. Humbling for sure.
- 15:43Yeah, yeah. Just to see like the hysteria,
- 15:46you know, for, for just, you know, little differences or
- 15:52maybe people. I mean, there's, there's a few
- 15:55theories as to why it happened, but very few of the theories
- 15:59include actual devil worship and brides of Satan or anything like
- 16:03that. Like none of that was, you know,
- 16:06really, really a thing. But I, I love how they've as a
- 16:11city just said, yeah, OK, we have this really messed up
- 16:14history and we're not gonna hide from it.
- 16:17Yeah, you know they're going. To tell the story and.
- 16:19We're going to tell the story. And, and they adopted the, the
- 16:24good parts about like witch culture, kind of like they had a
- 16:31bunch of like stores where people would tell you like about
- 16:35the stories and some of the histories where how witchcraft
- 16:40has like helped people and how some of the, the, the reasons
- 16:46that even in older than our 1600s Salem witch trials, like
- 16:50back in Europe in like, I mean, I think it went on.
- 16:54Did they say for like like 1000 years before that?
- 16:58No, I feel like they were like a.
- 17:00Long time. 1200. But they talked about in another
- 17:03museum we went to how like the, the things that would get people
- 17:09convicted of witchcraft were actually really, they were like,
- 17:12actually good things. Like it would be the local
- 17:16medicine woman, so to speak, who would use at the time what would
- 17:20have been, you know, the sort of like the doctor or, you know,
- 17:24herbal remedies and, and things like that.
- 17:28And then, of course, they would be later, sadly accused of
- 17:31witchcraft. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:33Which is, you know, whenever. Cursing witch a lot.
- 17:36I am. I don't know.
- 17:38I do. I usually do.
- 17:39I don't know, maybe it's part of it.
- 17:41Maybe the hat? Is oh, it's on my mind.
- 17:45Yeah, it is. Wow, that wasn't not giving you
- 17:49props. Get out of here.
- 17:52I got you. You did.
- 17:54So anyhow, it was a really cool experience going to Salem and I
- 17:59would recommend it strongly to anyone who.
- 18:02For sure who? Likes anything spooky and
- 18:06especially witches. I you know, I remember that was
- 18:10probably a Halloween costume I wore at least three times.
- 18:14I I loved it even as an adult. We did a family witch costumes.
- 18:20Maybe we should link some of those pictures.
- 18:23We could. Some maybe we'll because we have
- 18:25a lot of pictures and I feel like I love all of it yes so.
- 18:31There was other great stuff about being in Salem.
- 18:33It's red suburbish, kind of a Boston, so it's like very close
- 18:37to the ocean and lots of good food and seafood if you're into
- 18:42that, which of course I am and our daughter is and you're not.
- 18:45I'm not they had a really good donut shop, which is kind of
- 18:48like this is going to sound like trash to just about anybody
- 18:52who's like into really good Donuts, but it was good Donuts
- 18:57to me and it's this place Honeydew's, which is kind of
- 19:01probably like, you know, Dunkin' Donuts just a little bit better.
- 19:05I but. They have Dunkin' Donuts out
- 19:06there. They do, actually, it's the home
- 19:08of Dunkin' Donuts. However, I liked their Donuts
- 19:13better at Honeydew's than I actually don't like Dunkin'
- 19:16Donuts at all. Oh God, how many episodes do I
- 19:19have to talk about Donuts for you all to understand how much I
- 19:23like Donuts? We we like Donuts a lot a lot a.
- 19:28Lot that's one of the things we're excited about going to for
- 19:32is to get some delicious Donuts That's right.
- 19:35So but that was a lot of fun going and getting the Donuts
- 19:41there and just walking through. It's not that big of a town.
- 19:44I will say it's probably not that accessible there's like 3
- 19:48bathrooms in the whole town. Oh.
- 19:50That's true, I remember that. Yeah, and actually I was on the
- 19:54Facebook the other day and there was this.
- 19:57I survived. I survived which city bathroom?
- 20:03Which, seriously, it's like a three hour wait in line to go to
- 20:08the bathroom. And if they have like one public
- 20:11bathroom or two or something. There's two public bathrooms.
- 20:15It's not me. It's this is not a big city.
- 20:17Well, and I mean to its credit, it's old like they, you know,
- 20:22it's from, well, at least the 1600s.
- 20:25Yeah, yeah, it's really old. However, though they had this I
- 20:30survived thing and it's a bad weight to the bathroom.
- 20:34So anyone going just know that across the hall, there was a
- 20:38couple years ago a movie theater, and they said customers
- 20:45only can use the bathroom. Yeah, but a $3 bucket of popcorn
- 20:49makes you a customer. That's true.
- 20:51I was so upset because they weren't open when when we were
- 20:55standing in line, I was like, I would spend $70 on a bucket of
- 20:59popcorn because the line was so awful.
- 21:02But again, it just goes to show you it's a small city and it's
- 21:05not made for for that, for that amount of guests.
- 21:09But they I'm sure love having all those guests.
- 21:12I cannot, I bet all of their money for the year is made right
- 21:15there, you know, in the month of October.
- 21:21It's fun. I liked it.
- 21:22I would say though, the other thing that I really enjoyed
- 21:30about that trip was all day. There was something going on all
- 21:36day and they had like a cute little Samantha from Bewitched
- 21:41Sculpture. They did.
- 21:43Oh yeah, that's right. It's like a bronze statue of
- 21:47Bewitched. Which I I like witches a lot.
- 21:50So it was really fun. I when I was a kid, I used to Do
- 21:55you remember that one movie, The Witches that had?
- 21:59What was her name in it? Jessica Houston.
- 22:02Yes, yes. They ate the children.
- 22:05Yeah, they did a remake of that movie.
- 22:07They did with Anne Hathaway. Were they?
- 22:10Did they turn into mice? They turned.
- 22:13Or did they turn the kids into OK?
- 22:16Yes. I don't know.
- 22:17Did they? I can't.
- 22:17Maybe they didn't do that on purpose.
- 22:19The kids, they didn't turn the kids.
- 22:21I they definitely turned the kids into mice on purpose, but
- 22:25that's a really good classic film if you haven't.
- 22:28Seen it, Jessica? It's Angelica Houston.
- 22:31Oh, I and I let you say that 'cause I was like, Houston's
- 22:33right? Yeah, yeah.
- 22:34I bet. My bad.
- 22:36But the first one was definitely scarier to me than I was also
- 22:41younger, but she was just really good at being scary.
- 22:46The second one, although maybe it looks a little more realistic
- 22:51and I appreciated watching it. I I mean, you throw a witch on a
- 22:55on a movie, I'm probably going to watch it.
- 22:58Probably. I feel like we.
- 23:01Have seen a lot of witch movies. We have, and I mean as our
- 23:05child's grown up, like there's this whole Halloween town.
- 23:09Did you ever watch those with her?
- 23:11No, it's the story of this teenage witch in high school,
- 23:15not to be confused with Sabrina the Teenage Witch, because this
- 23:20teenage witch lives in Halloween Town and she.
- 23:24Sabrina the Teenage Witch obviously doesn't, but she's a
- 23:29witch and her grandmother is played by Debbie Reynolds.
- 23:33Look at that. I had a.
- 23:34Name, name and names. And well, is it the best acting?
- 23:41However, it is a fun movie to watch with younger children.
- 23:45Good. I like it a lot.
- 23:47I did watch a little bit when I was younger of Sabrina the
- 23:51Teenage Witch. Not my favorite but it's OK, a
- 23:56lot of people liked it. A lot of people, they did a
- 23:59remake or something. Oh, they did a cartoon for a
- 24:02little while. Maybe this was recent or maybe
- 24:04they're going to do 1. I feel like it's coming out
- 24:06again or something. Yeah, I think that's reasonable.
- 24:08It was a good. It's a good.
- 24:10I think it's with the some of the original cast.
- 24:13Oh, really? Yeah.
- 24:14Huh. Huh.
- 24:17Yeah, I don't know. I think it's it's either out or
- 24:18it's coming out soon. Well.
- 24:20It went on for several seasons, so I feel like it's a good, it's
- 24:24a well, Oh my gosh, I kind of forgot what, you know, the other
- 24:30are they technically witches? Now let's think about it.
- 24:33Harry Potter Is she a witch or? Is she?
- 24:36So like all the girls are witches there?
- 24:38What? How did that not even come to my
- 24:41mind earlier? I was trying to think of you
- 24:44know which options and which is out there.
- 24:46Which options? And I don't know why I forgot
- 24:50about that, but what great little witches there, you know,
- 24:53Hermione and. Love Mcgonigal's one of my.
- 24:57Favorites. Yeah, she's good.
- 24:59She's good. Balloon a love God.
- 25:01Lovegood. Lovegood yeah, there were a lot
- 25:04in it. Just what a great fun story that
- 25:07went on for years and book to movie to another place that we
- 25:12will be visiting here soon. Yep, So a lot of fun and I think
- 25:17that's that's the fun thing about witches and Halloween and
- 25:22all of that is you know, we can enjoy things that maybe are a
- 25:26little off. What is that word?
- 25:30Counterculture? OK, but made for fun.
- 25:34OK, Yeah. I agree.
- 25:36Yeah, I like all that stuff. It's made for fun witches and
- 25:39Wizards and well, as we've talked about on many episodes, a
- 25:43lot of the sci-fi and fiction and fantasy.
- 25:47Big fan of all that stuff. Are there a lot of witches in
- 25:50your sci-fi? Well, yes, yes and no.
- 25:56Yeah, there's so recent. Alien witches.
- 26:00Yeah. So in Star Wars, because that's
- 26:04got to come up frequently, they they had, they had like a like a
- 26:11set of force. You know, the force in Star
- 26:15Wars, I'm losing you already. They had a like a set of people
- 26:21who use the force who they called, I think the coven.
- 26:27We can't see your face on video. And they like use the force in a
- 26:33witchy way. So they call them like kind of
- 26:36witches. It was, it was cool actually to
- 26:38see like a different take on it a little bit.
- 26:41Well, and witches have been around for a really long time.
- 26:44Think about I mean. They're still around.
- 26:47You're right, but I like in stories and stuff like that,
- 26:50right? So like you're Hansel and
- 26:53Gretel? Oh yeah, you wanted to eat them
- 26:56little kids. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:58It's sort of interesting whenever history is like or
- 27:00people are like, it's an independent woman.
- 27:02She must be a witch. Oh, I think I thought it.
- 27:06I know. Never mind, it'll come up later.
- 27:10OK, anyway. So I guess I didn't realize
- 27:13there were sci-fi witches, alien witches out there.
- 27:16For sure, why not? What I know, I don't know.
- 27:20It is sort of interesting when you take a look at things and it
- 27:23just kind of pops up out of nowhere.
- 27:24You're like this. Does that make does a witch make
- 27:25sense or does a alien make sense in these things?
- 27:28Like earlier I was talking, we were talking about it and I was
- 27:33talking about Robin Hood and and Robin Hood men and tights had
- 27:37the better. Such a good man.
- 27:39That's got to be one of the best parody movies ever.
- 27:43Well, yeah, what? Happened to good parody movies
- 27:45like in the 80s and 90s we had strong parody.
- 27:49Robin Hood Men and Tights, was one of them.
- 27:51Scary Movie. Spaceballs.
- 27:54Well, you mean Spaceballs 2 is coming out?
- 27:56I know it's there's some good stuff.
- 27:58Yeah, but we, I mean, I don't know, maybe maybe people are too
- 28:02busy making superhero movies. There's been a lot of that.
- 28:06I yeah, there has not been enough good witchy movies
- 28:11lately. Maybe we just didn't know.
- 28:13They they did hocus pocus too. They did.
- 28:15That was good. The original was better.
- 28:18Sure, I think most people I. Feel like the originals are
- 28:21better. I don't know if I can come up
- 28:23with a sequel that I liked better than the original.
- 28:28I think it's kind of an unfair thing when you're like
- 28:30originally with trilogies or well, like Harry Potter, right?
- 28:36So there's one where the first one was not my favorite, but it
- 28:40was kind of all made to be with my story.
- 28:42So I don't feel like that's that's different.
- 28:44But when you do a sequel that was never meant to be, but
- 28:47someone's like, dude, it made money.
- 28:50Yeah, we need to do it again. Yeah.
- 28:53Yeah. Which is something that Disney
- 28:55is, really. Thank you, everyone.
- 28:58All that. I mean, universal and like,
- 29:00there's so many. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:03And this money they go for. It you're right, like think of
- 29:05Dracula and how many Dracula movies, Oh my goodness, they're
- 29:08worth Dracula and. So many.
- 29:10Yeah, you're right. I guess everybody does it.
- 29:14No wonder how many Dracula. I bet you that's like maybe one
- 29:16of the most prolific, Yeah, like horror type monster stories.
- 29:23That and Frankenstein, I think. I bet you those are like the two
- 29:26most. Well, that is the original
- 29:29sci-fi. Right.
- 29:30Frankenstein. Mary Shelley.
- 29:32Yeah, yeah. 18. I wonder if anyone thought she
- 29:35was a bit writing such stories? 18201830 something.
- 29:39Yeah, yeah. And she was like 19.
- 29:42I know. Super young.
- 29:44You got to wonder what was happening in her life to have
- 29:46written a story about the basically the modern Prometheus.
- 29:49Like just create life. Well, I don't know.
- 29:54I feel like there's probably a lot of creativity in young
- 29:57women. Like, well, for sure, think
- 29:59about the witch trials. The Salem witch trials were
- 30:01because these young girls were like, I'm bored.
- 30:04Why are people coming after young women to creativity
- 30:07calling them witches? It's messed up.
- 30:09I mean, I think we know why. Well, I'm saying it's messed up
- 30:12though. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:13So I don't know, it's just I, I really think that there's some
- 30:18good media though and fun things to think about with which is
- 30:23that? Well, let me ask you a question.
- 30:26Oh boy, I don't even know if I'm ready.
- 30:30Here's the moment you've all been waiting for.
- 30:32People in this corner claiming to weigh in at 135 lbs and with
- 30:38substantial otherworldly powers. We have Amber.
- 30:45And in this corner we have Luke who is wearing a red beard and a
- 30:51really honestly like this is the legit awesome hoodie if anyone
- 30:56isn't looking. Again.
- 30:58You should look at this. I wanted this when he bought it
- 31:02and. I always want my clothes.
- 31:06Yeah, but he he bought it, so you should appreciate it.
- 31:09Anyhow, in this corner we have Luke and we again are not doing
- 31:13the tally. I'm probably winning still.
- 31:16You probably aren't. I feel like by this time when
- 31:19this airs, maybe we're tied even.
- 31:20We might be. We might be.
- 31:23So I have a question though, for you, Luke.
- 31:25And that is, we've been talking about witches.
- 31:28Yep. Who's your favorite witch of all
- 31:32time? I don't know that I had adequate
- 31:36time to prepare and as a well known to anyone watching the
- 31:42podcast, The Chief non researcher of the two of us, I'm
- 31:48a little concerned because Amber comes to me sometimes with some
- 31:52real good counters when I don't know they're coming.
- 31:55And this is one of those. I don't know what she's coming
- 31:57at me with. She kept it a secret again.
- 32:00So my favorite witch, I'm almost certain I know who yours is and
- 32:06I'm real upset about it. My favorite witch and the one
- 32:11that would be the contender is the Wicked Witch of the West.
- 32:17Witch. Witch.
- 32:18We keep saying witch who, she who, who for?
- 32:26I mean for a long time is like the witch you talk about.
- 32:35Duration. I mean, that movie came out in
- 32:401936. Oh, you did research?
- 32:44I did not you just. Knew I.
- 32:46Literally just know that I really don't research, you know
- 32:48that anyway. And it was the first color movie
- 32:56motion picture as they said back in the day ever.
- 33:01And that, I mean, if you have to think about movies, that is
- 33:09probably, I'm going to just say it, the most iconic movie of all
- 33:17time to date. Not that there haven't
- 33:19necessarily been like better stories or, you know, better
- 33:25quality, all of that, yes. But the way they laid that story
- 33:30out was just genius. And I know my argument isn't
- 33:33about what's the best movie ever, but I do have to give
- 33:36credit where credit is due. I mean, they started the movie
- 33:39in black and white. They had the whole farm girl
- 33:41thing going on and the tour. Minnesota Zone.
- 33:44Judy Garland. Yep, Minnesota zone and the
- 33:48tornado thing. And then she gets transported
- 33:51through a tornado to the land of Oz and she lands and then all of
- 33:54a sudden it's color. And then you got Munchkin Land
- 33:57and you got the the good witch Glenda.
- 34:00And you got, I mean the story with the Wicked Witch of the
- 34:03East and she gets planned by the house.
- 34:05And then I mean the slippers and the pause Toto.
- 34:10Pause. I'm not I you're not pausing,
- 34:12but I'll tell you. Just wait.
- 34:13Just wait. Did you know that the Rubies
- 34:17slippers were in a museum here in Minnesota?
- 34:20I did not know that. And did you know that there was
- 34:23like a whole heist of those Ruby slippers?
- 34:26They've got to be worth a bunch of money.
- 34:27Yes, they were. And I actually know a lot.
- 34:30Debbie Reynolds, again, is involved in this story.
- 34:33So someone was able to access those things because back in the
- 34:37day, people weren't thinking about Hollywood iconic items
- 34:41being worthwhile. And there was a friend of
- 34:45Dorothy who saw the shoes and was like, these need to be
- 34:50saved. And so they were saved.
- 34:52They were one of seven pairs that was saved and they brought
- 34:55them to Minnesota. And there's just do research.
- 34:59It's sort of amazing how they were stolen and it.
- 35:02Yeah. And but they've been found.
- 35:04Well, that's good. Yeah.
- 35:06So anyway, so back to my little rant on maybe the best movie
- 35:10ever. The whole thing.
- 35:11She's there. And then she's got her, you
- 35:14know, family. They show up as they.
- 35:16She's got the cowardly Lion and the scare.
- 35:18I mean, and watching that as a kid, I mean that witch with her
- 35:25bright green skin and that long nose and the wicked cackle and
- 35:31the. I'll get you my pretty.
- 35:35I mean, epic. Like, super epic.
- 35:39And the little dog, Toto, she's like your little dog, too.
- 35:44I mean, terrifying. And then she had an army of
- 35:48flying monkeys. Yeah.
- 35:49Who wasn't scared of those flying monkeys?
- 35:52I was terrified. I mean, seriously.
- 35:55Terrified. And the evil that was portrayed,
- 36:00I'm, I'm just, I'm in love with the whole story.
- 36:05It's so wonderful. And her presence as a witch and
- 36:13her power, I mean, she had essentially taken over one of
- 36:17the four quarters of the Land of Oz and was challenging it for
- 36:21Ultimate Rain to take down. The wizard is pretty strong.
- 36:26I mean, she wasn't some sidebar witch and like a hovel that
- 36:31like, you know, was cast in spells trying to eat Hansel and
- 36:35Gretel. And she wasn't like, you know,
- 36:38she wasn't like a minor witch. She was a big time witch.
- 36:42She was like a witch with aspirations of glory.
- 36:45And she was getting close now. She didn't know Dorothy was
- 36:49coming. And she had that pure clean
- 36:52water. She didn't know that was coming.
- 36:55But I mean, as a witch, she was terrifying.
- 37:02I bet you, you know what? I probably had nightmares about
- 37:04her too because she was so scary and like for, I mean, that's all
- 37:11coming up on, well, not coming up soon, but relatively soon.
- 37:15That movie will be 100 years old, which is pretty crazy to
- 37:19think about. Iconic.
- 37:21And I wonder it may have even. I think it preceded like most of
- 37:25the monster movies that were also totally epic.
- 37:29Because weren't those like 40s? No.
- 37:31I would disagree with you. Well, you, I don't know, I mean,
- 37:34it could be wrong. It doesn't matter anyway.
- 37:37So, So for me, she is the best witch, the winningest of
- 37:46witches. And I'm sure you have a good
- 37:50counter and I might even come up with some extra stuff because I
- 37:54did as as usual, 0 research. That's what I got.
- 37:59I'm throwing it down. The Wicked Witch of the West,
- 38:01what's her name is? Is her name Elphaba or is that
- 38:04from the story Wicked? What was her?
- 38:08Do you remember her name from the book?
- 38:10The I think I have the book. What's the book Frank?
- 38:14Frank L Baum Is Beth the writer. Was it called?
- 38:20I don't know if she had a name in the Wizard of Oz.
- 38:23Was it called the Wizard of Oz? No, it wasn't.
- 38:26The book? I wonder what it was called, I
- 38:30can't remember. I yeah, I can't my.
- 38:32Brain isn't currently on. I'm sorry, the floor is yours,
- 38:36The Wizard of Oz. From the Wizard of Oh What?
- 38:41Like that's that's where the OK. What?
- 38:46I mean. I I feel like I'm walking into a
- 38:48trap. You are walking into a trap.
- 38:50Uh oh, you are walking into. This is not good.
- 38:54And. You look like you're struggling
- 39:01over there. I really, really am.
- 39:03Because if I were to pick one. Did I pick her?
- 39:11It would no. I'd be tied between 2:00.
- 39:14Oh well, let's hear the two and then you can you can work there.
- 39:17I'll. Decide.
- 39:18OK, OK, here we go. So the Wicked Witch from the
- 39:23Wizard of Oz? Of the West, OK, sure 'cause her
- 39:27sister was crushed by Dorothy's house.
- 39:31Yes, Gary, I agree. But I want like US, women are
- 39:38more than just one dimension. For sure.
- 39:41And I feel like it just only showed a scary woman who was
- 39:45just in that movie. It was, you know, Ding Dong, the
- 39:48witch is dead. And like, everybody was so happy
- 39:50about this evil woman dying, OK? Witch is.
- 39:55Dead right that you're not going to get that out of your head so
- 39:59this is OK I'm going to talk about two witches the.
- 40:07This is hard because so I'm you know what?
- 40:10No, I'm going to go with my favorite witch.
- 40:12Out with it. A Sanderson sister.
- 40:16OK, that's not what I thought you were going to do.
- 40:18What did you think I was going to say?
- 40:19No, I'm not going to tell you no.
- 40:20You can tell me because it's not.
- 40:21It wouldn't. I have no reason to not say, but
- 40:24my other one will. I'll write it down.
- 40:26Yeah, we got to make sure you're not.
- 40:28I'm not cheating because if you. Come out, you're like, oh,
- 40:30you're right, that is the best pick.
- 40:32OK, I'm writing it down. Did you say uh Sanders, the
- 40:35Sanders and sisters or uh Sanderson sisters?
- 40:38Because you can't really say the Sanderson sisters, because you'd
- 40:41be like, that's not fair. That's not one witch picking
- 40:43three. Yes, but.
- 40:45Winifred, were you OK? Winifred.
- 40:46Who's the chief sister? Yeah.
- 40:48But wait, what was your other one?
- 40:50Was it Glenda? No, no, no.
- 40:53What was it? Let's have it.
- 40:56From Wicked. From Wicked.
- 41:00Oh, from wicked the the yes. OK, the follow up.
- 41:04Yes. She was pretty great and that
- 41:06movie just came out. I read all of those books before
- 41:09the. Movie And we saw the show, the
- 41:11Broadway show. Yeah.
- 41:12So I feel like the character development there is very
- 41:16different for sure. And she was very misunderstood
- 41:19in all of that. I don't think in The Wizard of
- 41:21Oz she was misunderstood. She was supposed to be evil and
- 41:24she was evil. And now I feel like I need to
- 41:27read the story that was written. I feel like there's probably not
- 41:31much there about her except for she's bad and she makes monkey
- 41:36but in the Wicked movie, which I personally think was phenomenal.
- 41:41Fantastic. But.
- 41:43The second ones coming out, it's like in the it's.
- 41:46Coming out soon. In spring or is it this year
- 41:48anyway? So I read all the books, the
- 41:50Wicked series, Yeah. And after that we had gone to a
- 41:54play. And I love plays.
- 41:56I love live theater. I love all of that.
- 41:59I usually, I don't think I've ever compared.
- 42:02Oh, of course I have. I'm just gonna say like all of
- 42:04freaking Shakespeare. I've compared to the the plays
- 42:08that I've read, but when I saw Wicked on stage, I was like, and
- 42:13this is really hot take and this is going to get a lot of people
- 42:17hot take. I was like, only because there
- 42:23was so much background feeling going on in the books that on
- 42:27stage you just can't do. Sure.
- 42:29And I was like that. It felt flat compared to it
- 42:32didn't feel like a good way of telling it, telling the story.
- 42:34But in the Wicked movie. The movie, they did it.
- 42:37They got all of that expression, all of the feeling.
- 42:40It's like she, I can't even remember her name and it's
- 42:43bonkers that I can't. But she was so good, so
- 42:47powerful, obviously great, phenomenal singer, all of that.
- 42:51But like, she brought that character of what I read to
- 42:54life. Cynthia Areevo.
- 42:55Yeah. Fantastic.
- 42:58Awesome. So that was going to be one of
- 43:00my two. I see.
- 43:01But see, then you went with the Wicked Witch and I was like, oh,
- 43:05I can't do the. Same person.
- 43:07Yeah, so, but I had to, I had to clarify for a very good reason,
- 43:10because these are two different characters.
- 43:12I mean, they end up being the same, but they're, she may have
- 43:18been my number one, except for for me, nostalgia really doesn't
- 43:22matter, which is why the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of
- 43:25Oz, valid choice. Nostalgia like that is something
- 43:28you've grown up with. Oh yeah.
- 43:30Everyone did. Yeah, for me though, Winifred
- 43:34and the reason why is she was a part of a three sisters thing,
- 43:38which is covens are kind of a big deal.
- 43:41You know, she's not a stand alone.
- 43:42She's not doing it on her own. She might be able to, but she's
- 43:45not. She needs her sisters, she does,
- 43:48to be fully powerful in the way she is.
- 43:51And she actually like, well, maybe has some evil thoughts and
- 43:58evil doings. Like she has with the eating of
- 44:02children. Well, that's just to, you know,
- 44:05live forever. That's whatever.
- 44:07Oh, I just thought of another good witch from Stardust, the
- 44:12book and movie. I don't remember which in there
- 44:15so, but back to my witch Winifred.
- 44:19So she was the smart sister, the most powerful and really she
- 44:27what she was doing, she was trying to do for her sisters
- 44:30too. And she was funny and she could
- 44:33sing, right? Like, I mean, Bette Midler, come
- 44:36on, You can't really beat that. And she.
- 44:40But she was so fun, I mean, as a character.
- 44:44And she had this love of this book, right?
- 44:48A love of a book. Yeah, which?
- 44:51The book had an eyeball. Yeah, that was her her thing.
- 44:55And but she was funny and she was fun and the way she was
- 45:01represented in Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus too, was the fun of
- 45:07Halloween. Like it's just meant Halloween
- 45:10to me. Everything fun, little spooky
- 45:14but mostly fun and like just enjoyable and.
- 45:17Set in Salem. Right.
- 45:20And then we saw the house when we were in actual Salem that was
- 45:23from the movie. Of course I had no choice, but
- 45:26of course, and the high school, we saw the high school.
- 45:29And the house? Allison's house.
- 45:32Mm hmm. I love that movie.
- 45:36And nowadays Disney has something called Mickey's Not So
- 45:44Scary Halloween Party. And at this Halloween party,
- 45:48they have the Sanderson sisters, a Sanderson sisters show, which
- 45:53is so much fun. Yes, for me also, I have two
- 45:58sisters, but I have way more than two sisters.
- 46:00But I was raised in a household with two sisters.
- 46:03Yes, so and we did a lot of fighting like they did, but also
- 46:09like now today we have a really great relationship.
- 46:12Yes I like I'm trying to get and sisters to get like Sanderson
- 46:16sister tattoos. So how could I not pick
- 46:20Sanderson sisters? I, you know, I guess.
- 46:23And when a Fred being. Just which one would you be?
- 46:26Well, I which? Which?
- 46:28Which which I don't really care honestly, I would let them
- 46:32decide if one of them I would she'd get a taxi for anything.
- 46:36So I'm not really concerned there.
- 46:38But I'm like whatever 1 you all want, I'll get the other one
- 46:43because I really just want it and you know, like if.
- 46:45They you they would think you are the powerful one or.
- 46:50I am the youngest. Or the cute 1, I don't know.
- 46:53I mean, could be both or or the funny funny one in the middle.
- 47:00I am pretty freaking funny sometimes, that's true.
- 47:04But anyhow, So like, how could I not go with that?
- 47:07I really do love the Hocus Pocus movie.
- 47:11I love like I have bought several hocus pocus things and
- 47:16right now as I sit this will be up.
- 47:20I have like 3 hocus pocus brooms and I'm gonna have one for me.
- 47:24And I'm gonna get yours. Yeah, give, give my sisters
- 47:27theirs. So yeah, it's gotta be.
- 47:29And she pulls the family together.
- 47:31That's why I, I really think that she's the best and she's
- 47:37got a little bit more evil than the other two, which is fun.
- 47:40So that would I, I have to go with her just based on like the
- 47:45length, the longevity. You were talking about staying
- 47:48power. I mean, that movie has been
- 47:49around for a long time. But for me also in my life, it's
- 47:52been every every year. I watch it at least once.
- 47:58So I don't watch Wizard of Oz ever.
- 48:02True. I've seen it a few times,
- 48:04probably more than a few times, and I know a lot about it.
- 48:07And Wicked, I've only really watched twice now I will say
- 48:10great. And I've watched other Wicked
- 48:12things. Yeah, do.
- 48:14You wonder what I thought you were gonna pick.
- 48:15What did you think I was gonna pick?
- 48:17And I thought you, I mean, you can't pick it now.
- 48:19I'm not going to. I thought you were gonna take me
- 48:21down with it, Maleficent. She's so fairy, Oh my gosh.
- 48:26Wasn't she witchy? She was a.
- 48:29Fairy. Oh good, thank.
- 48:31She cast a spell on. Fairy.
- 48:34Whoa. What?
- 48:35I mean, OK, OK with the, the the.
- 48:38Technicalities really matter. I couldn't pick her.
- 48:42She's a fairy. OK, fair enough.
- 48:45But. Fairy enough.
- 48:48So anyhow, that's that's my choice and I know that the
- 48:52Wicked Witch of the West, although might be more iconic
- 49:00for folks one. 100%. I feel there's just so much more
- 49:04fun and story and enjoyment behind Winifred and her two
- 49:09sisters. Well, I think that the Wicked
- 49:13Witch of the West would say to the Sanderson sisters, I'll get
- 49:18you my pretties. I feel like she'd appreciate
- 49:22them because she was all about that's my sister.
- 49:24You dropped a house on her. I will get you.
- 49:26But I'll ask yourself this question.
- 49:28Who would be in charge if they joined up?
- 49:31Maybe the Wicked Witch of the West.
- 49:33She already had an empire and a castle.
- 49:36Just say. That matters.
- 49:38I don't think that matters. And an army of monkeys that
- 49:40flew. Creepy, creepy and a haunted
- 49:42forest. Yeah, all kinds of stuff.
- 49:45Anyway, we we have made our cases, I think.
- 49:50You know, when I was a kid and actually for several years.
- 49:53Oh, you weren't done. No, I'm not.
- 49:55But it has nothing to do with it has to do with witches.
- 49:58OK, Should I force the folks into hearing a song about
- 50:02witches or no? Yes.
- 50:04OK, so I'm really great at singing and you're all gonna
- 50:07turn off I'm so. Excited.
- 50:09But on Halloween, we have this, this custom.
- 50:13Oh, I'm gonna call it custom. Oh, I know what you're talking
- 50:16about. This is adorable.
- 50:17Yeah, where we'll sing a song and it's the witch, the witch,
- 50:22the ugly old witch. Oh, what a terrible sight.
- 50:28She flies through clouds as black guest pitch and flies on
- 50:33Halloween night. Oh, oh, oh, boom, boom, yeah.
- 50:43There you go. It's a great little family song
- 50:45that your mom does and then see you do it.
- 50:48Yeah, I had to share. Super cute.
- 50:50And I'm sure everybody's like, oh, we're for.
- 50:52Sure, and she does. We might have lost a subscriber.
- 50:54Maybe. I hope not.
- 50:56We probably. I was being vulnerable, I.
- 50:58Really hope that people actually are like, whoa, I've never heard
- 51:01that because I had never heard that.
- 51:03Really. Yeah, of course.
- 51:04You had it and. They're like, wait, I'm going to
- 51:06play that back and we're going to make it a little Halloween
- 51:09sing along tradition at our dinner table.
- 51:11Yes, when we're eating our Jelly eyeballs and our Frankenstein
- 51:15Rice Krispies and. I really hope that what we talk
- 51:19about over the spooky season does inspire you to bring more
- 51:23traditions and put them out there because I love seeing it.
- 51:27So now I want you all to go online through Spotify.
- 51:35Vote in the. Poll already online.
- 51:37Oh, I suppose no, they kind of downloaded.
- 51:40It OK, but they were at one point on the Internet.
- 51:44Well, and and and vote for the one who really brought it.
- 51:47Wow, you did bring that. I mean for as far as costumes
- 51:50go, I got the best I could have. Got a witch hat technically.
- 51:54I also, yeah, yeah, you could have.
- 51:56You did. You and our daughter, yeah, very
- 52:00much rocked it because she's got that epic spider one.
- 52:03Yes, yes. So we were talking about how
- 52:07people could help us out. That's true.
- 52:10They could share this with their friends and family.
- 52:12They could. Either by sharing it through the
- 52:15Internet or by word of mouth. Yes.
- 52:18We'll take either one. Follow us.
- 52:20Yes, like tell your friends in other states, hopefully
- 52:24Massachusetts. Let's get some of them on board.
- 52:27Yeah, I want Massachusetts. I totally Salem.
- 52:30For them, oh, we have a friend who has a sister, cousin,
- 52:33somebody who lives in Massachusetts.
- 52:36Maybe we could get a little, oh, I suppose a little
- 52:39recommendation going. All right, well, that is it for.
- 52:43Today, Wicked Witch, that's the one to vote for.
- 52:46No winner, Fred. Winner Fred Anderson.
- 52:49Those are the choices you have in front of you people.
- 52:51All right, stay spooky. See you next time.
