- 0:11Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:14Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex bar Blazarre from lazarn O.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Everybody nailed it. Joined has always by our bark gap.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Bars.
- 0:28Speaker 4: I think the biggest thing about this game that worries
- 0:30Speaker 4: me attat is that this is a Dolphins team that
- 0:33Speaker 4: can run the football and run it well. They are
- 0:35Speaker 4: top ten in the league in e P A h Hn
- 0:37Speaker 4: leads the league in explosive runs.
- 0:39Speaker 2: He has forty runs over.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Ten plus yards this series, having the fantastic season. So
- 0:43Speaker 4: they can run the ball. They can run it out
- 0:45Speaker 4: of heavy personnel. They're gonna put the full back and
- 0:47Speaker 4: gold he's gonna play. They're gonna put the tight ends
- 0:50Speaker 4: out there. They're gonna run it heavy, and then they're
- 0:52Speaker 4: gonna run play action off the run, heavy.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Looks and they start fast.
- 0:55Speaker 4: And what has the one thing that the Patriots defense
- 0:57Speaker 4: has had trouble when not started fast? Not starting fast?
- 1:03Speaker 4: In my defense, we did not know a Hen wasn't
- 1:06Speaker 4: gonna play.
- 1:06Speaker 3: If he played, that probably would have aged a little
- 1:08Speaker 3: bit better.
- 1:08Speaker 4: But the starfast part I was dead on about you
- 1:11Speaker 4: and I have a take on that that We'll get
- 1:15Speaker 4: to you here in a little bit about the Patriots defense.
- 1:17Speaker 4: But hello, it's Evan Lazard's Alex Barth, It's Ace behind
- 1:21Speaker 4: the glass. It's Catch twenty two with you for the
- 1:24Speaker 4: next couple of hours. Playoffs, Barth, playofflayoffs.
- 1:27Speaker 3: This is the first playoff edition in Catch twenty two.
- 1:30Speaker 4: This is the first playoff edition of Catch twenty two.
- 1:32Speaker 4: It's the first time that I am covering or working
- 1:35Speaker 4: a playoff game as a team.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Employee, so that's pretty cool.
- 1:38Speaker 4: This is all a bunch of first for a lot
- 1:40Speaker 4: of people, which is another thing I want to talk
- 1:42Speaker 4: about here in a second. But I think the excitement
- 1:46Speaker 4: is palpable. We haven't been around the team since Sunday
- 1:50Speaker 4: night after the win over the Dolphins, so I'm interested.
- 1:54Speaker 4: I'm excited to see the energy in the locker room
- 1:58Speaker 4: here today when we get to go in there today.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Here from head coach Mike Frable, Here from Drake May
- 2:04Speaker 4: of course, also, we'll be out at practice around two
- 2:07Speaker 4: o'clock this afternoon, and there's some big key pieces that
- 2:12Speaker 4: may or may not be there with us, right, you know, Roberts, Bulane,
- 2:15Speaker 4: Chius Tonga, Jared Wilson, Harold Landry. So the Patriots have
- 2:20Speaker 4: some injuries, not quite like the Chargers do, but they
- 2:24Speaker 4: have some questionable guys that I'm interested to see if
- 2:28Speaker 4: those guys will be out at practice. So obviously we're
- 2:31Speaker 4: gonna be Chargers heavy in the show. I do have
- 2:33Speaker 4: some leftover thoughts on this Dolphins game. More big picture,
- 2:37Speaker 4: We're not going to do a full the good, the bad,
- 2:39Speaker 4: and the stuff that gets you beat from the Dolphins
- 2:42Speaker 4: game because I think all of us have moved on
- 2:45Speaker 4: rather quickly to this.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Playoff game and to the playoffs. So just a couple
- 2:49Speaker 1: of things.
- 2:50Speaker 4: That were on my mind in terms of the big
- 2:52Speaker 4: picture here moving forward for the Patriots, We're gonna do
- 2:55Speaker 4: our I was gonna say Dolphins, We're gonna do our
- 2:58Speaker 4: Chargers preview in the first hour of the show, because
- 3:01Speaker 4: I don't want to short change you, guys. I want
- 3:03Speaker 4: to make sure that we do a thorough preview of
- 3:05Speaker 4: the Chargers and the Patriots on Sunday night, So we'll
- 3:11Speaker 4: get to that as well, and then we'll take all
- 3:13Speaker 4: your lovely calls and emails. But I want to start
- 3:15Speaker 4: with the few leftovers from the Dolphins game. These are
- 3:19Speaker 4: more like I said, gearing towards the big picture, not
- 3:22Speaker 4: necessarily talking about the way this game unfolded, but a
- 3:26Speaker 4: couple of things that I think are worthy of noting
- 3:29Speaker 4: from this football game. I think the first thing, and
- 3:32Speaker 4: you know, I have some takes on the way the
- 3:33Speaker 4: game was played a little bit, but the number one
- 3:37Speaker 4: thing to me to come out of this game is
- 3:39Speaker 4: that you saw a healthy will Campbell and Milton Williams
- 3:42Speaker 4: on Sunday afternoon, and I thought both guys. You know,
- 3:45Speaker 4: we can individually break down both individually here at a second,
- 3:48Speaker 4: but I thought both guys looked healthy and looked like
- 3:51Speaker 4: they were moving well, looked like they had their juice
- 3:55Speaker 4: or their explosiveness, especially Milton Williams. Not that Campbell didn't,
- 3:59Speaker 4: but it just more of a position that lends itself
- 4:01Speaker 4: to that sort of thing, which I think is extremely important.
- 4:04Speaker 4: You know, Milton Williams is the type of guy that
- 4:07Speaker 4: his first step and his get off off the ball
- 4:09Speaker 4: is his game. You know, if he doesn't have that
- 4:12Speaker 4: because he can't push off on that ankle, then you
- 4:14Speaker 4: will be a little bit more concerned about him his
- 4:17Speaker 4: impact moving forward. And I just thought, just starting with
- 4:21Speaker 4: Milton Williams. You could feel the ripple effect of him
- 4:27Speaker 4: being on the field instantly. And he only played about
- 4:30Speaker 4: twenty five twenty six snaps in this game because he
- 4:33Speaker 4: was already going to probably be a little bit limited
- 4:36Speaker 4: coming back from the injury. And then they didn't play
- 4:38Speaker 4: any of the starters in the fourth quarter, so he
- 4:41Speaker 4: didn't play a ton. But I thought there were four
- 4:43Speaker 4: or five instances where I felt like he's back, oh,
- 4:48Speaker 4: either by his own individual play or the trickle down
- 4:51Speaker 4: effect of him being out there.
- 4:52Speaker 2: You know I'm talking about.
- 4:54Speaker 4: You know, of course his tackle for loss that third down,
- 4:57Speaker 4: third and one stop that Corey Durton made. You know,
- 5:00Speaker 4: Milton Williams is winning on his block on Cole Strange
- 5:03Speaker 4: as well, and they just see Corey Durton then get
- 5:06Speaker 4: a match up and get a one on one and
- 5:08Speaker 4: he wins there. And they're not getting seeing as many
- 5:12Speaker 4: double teams inside for Dirden and Christian Barmore like you've
- 5:15Speaker 4: been seeing for the past month without Milton Williams.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Christian Barmore is.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Sack, the line slides and opens towards Milton Williams, he
- 5:23Speaker 4: gets a one on one, he wins. You know, Marcus
- 5:25Speaker 4: Jones's sacks, same kind of thing. He gets a one
- 5:28Speaker 4: on one there on the guard on the blitz and
- 5:30Speaker 4: every all eyes are on Milton Williams and ninety And
- 5:34Speaker 4: that's the formula for this team. From a pass rus standpoint,
- 5:37Speaker 4: you know, stopping to run, getting a guy back that
- 5:40Speaker 4: can get off blocks and can make plays on the
- 5:42Speaker 4: other side of the line of scrimmage was huge. But
- 5:45Speaker 4: also from a pass rus standpoint, there's just a hierarchy,
- 5:48Speaker 4: kind of like we talk about with receivers Alex.
- 5:50Speaker 2: When you have a guy like Milton Williams.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Who draws doubles, who draws extra attention, who can beat
- 5:56Speaker 4: the best guy on the line from the opponent. Now,
- 5:59Speaker 4: if up bar and Moore, it frees up the edges,
- 6:02Speaker 4: it frees up blitzers, it frees up some of the
- 6:05Speaker 4: secondary interior rushers. It just kind of makes everybody's job
- 6:08Speaker 4: a little bit easier.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it really does. And I had talked about this
- 6:13Speaker 1: a little bit when he got hurt. Some of these
- 6:16Speaker 1: guys you don't necessarily see the impact. You see what
- 6:20Speaker 1: their impact is more when they're off the field than
- 6:22Speaker 1: when they're on the field.
- 6:23Speaker 3: And I think mil Williams is one of those players.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I don't think a lot of people realize just how
- 6:28Speaker 1: well he was playing until he wasn't out there, right,
- 6:30Speaker 1: and you saw the impact of that. So it's a
- 6:32Speaker 1: great point by you talking about how he freed up
- 6:34Speaker 1: some other guys to make plays. Now, I think him
- 6:36Speaker 1: and Will Campbell didn't look like a lot of Russ
- 6:39Speaker 1: felt good where those guys are at, and it was
- 6:40Speaker 1: good the Patriots were able to get a lead and
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, get those guys out didn't really have to
- 6:44Speaker 1: play the fourth quarter. I thought they both played. You know,
- 6:48Speaker 1: mill Williams obviously had a more rotational position. I think
- 6:50Speaker 1: Will Campbell played every snap. I'm pretty sure before they
- 6:52Speaker 1: pulled the starters there in the fourth quarter. Milton Williams didn't,
- 6:55Speaker 1: but the defensive tackle usually doesn't. But I thought he
- 6:57Speaker 1: played a representative amount. Nothing on top of them playing well,
- 7:01Speaker 1: I don't know about you. I didn't see anything in
- 7:02Speaker 1: there that to me looked like, well, okay, like he's
- 7:06Speaker 1: going to be limited, he's going to be on a
- 7:07Speaker 1: snap count.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Both guys looked fully good to go.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree, And with Campbell, I thought that there
- 7:14Speaker 4: were some rustiness, maybe a little bit in his pass protection,
- 7:18Speaker 4: you know, getting bull rushed a couple of times by
- 7:20Speaker 4: Bradley Chubb, But overall, I thought his run game tape
- 7:23Speaker 4: was really good in this game, and he settled down
- 7:26Speaker 4: quite a bit in pass protection, and it certainly wasn't
- 7:29Speaker 4: bad by any stretch of the imagination. There's just maybe
- 7:32Speaker 4: a couple of pressures that he gave up there to
- 7:34Speaker 4: Chubb to power that when you haven't he'd been in
- 7:37Speaker 4: a pass set in an NFL game in five weeks.
- 7:40Speaker 4: And then yeah, Bradley Chubb coming off your head and
- 7:43Speaker 4: putting his hands on you. It's a little bit different
- 7:45Speaker 4: than getting those reps.
- 7:46Speaker 1: And this is a guy that he's never had a
- 7:49Speaker 1: like really significant football injury before, so he did in college.
- 7:52Speaker 3: He didn't.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I think there was that story right where he was
- 7:54Speaker 1: hurting in high school, but he played in the state.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Championship or the game for state championship anyway, whatever it was.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So you know, he never really had to make that
- 8:01Speaker 1: adjostment before, and he made it.
- 8:02Speaker 4: That's exactly why I think, you know, both of us
- 8:05Speaker 4: were on this same page, was that that's why I
- 8:08Speaker 4: wanted to see these two guys play in Week eight team, right,
- 8:11Speaker 4: because now you know, Will Campbell has you know, felt
- 8:15Speaker 4: the power of an NFL rusher before he faces the
- 8:18Speaker 4: Chargers and Khalil Mack and Tully tool up to. I
- 8:21Speaker 4: Can'm not going to truly polo to.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I know how to pronounce it. I know how to
- 8:27Speaker 1: pronounce it, but I have to read it to pronounce it.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Yeah, uh two week Polow too. I don't why put an
- 8:32Speaker 3: extra to.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Polow two and Mac are both like big, burly, heavy
- 8:36Speaker 4: handed rushers, And if that was his very first game
- 8:40Speaker 4: action in six weeks, I would have been, you know,
- 8:43Speaker 4: small sea concerned about it. So getting both those guys
- 8:47Speaker 4: integrated and back in the mix, I think was huge.
- 8:50Speaker 4: And like I said that, even though it didn't they
- 8:53Speaker 4: didn't have a chance. So that is obviously a huge
- 8:55Speaker 4: caveat to the run defense for the Patriots in this game.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Statistics speaking, this was one of their best run defense
- 9:02Speaker 4: performances of the year in terms of EPA. It was
- 9:04Speaker 4: their best run defense performance of the year, So even
- 9:08Speaker 4: against Oli Gordon and Jalen Wright, you know, and it's
- 9:11Speaker 4: a good scheme, you know, it's a good run scheme
- 9:12Speaker 4: that Mike McDaniel runs to be able to go out
- 9:15Speaker 4: there and really shut down the Dolphins rushing attack after
- 9:20Speaker 4: having a lot of issues stopping the run without Milton Williams.
- 9:23Speaker 2: It was like almost.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Instantaneous, and they don't even have you know, Tonga and
- 9:27Speaker 4: Splaine back yet. So I think that was really refreshing,
- 9:31Speaker 4: really good to see on all fronts. Was those two
- 9:34Speaker 4: guys back out there healthy. The other thing, you know,
- 9:38Speaker 4: a couple more things. The other big picture topic I
- 9:43Speaker 4: wanted to hit on was this run game and Ramondre
- 9:47Speaker 4: Stevenson's resurgence here in second half push and Trevon Henderson's
- 9:51Speaker 4: had his moments in the second half year of the
- 9:53Speaker 4: season of course as well, and in the last month
- 9:56Speaker 4: when I'm you know, thinking about these stats that you
- 9:58Speaker 4: know I can throw out there. You know, number one
- 10:00Speaker 4: in the league in the last month in EPA per rush,
- 10:03Speaker 4: number one in the league in yards per carry, number
- 10:05Speaker 4: one in the league. An explosive run rate since Week fifteen. Now,
- 10:10Speaker 4: the Bills, Dolphins, and Jets don't have good run defenses.
- 10:13Speaker 4: You know that that's fair, they don't. You know, the
- 10:16Speaker 4: Dolphins is more average than bad. But you know, all
- 10:19Speaker 4: three of those teams are in the bottom half of
- 10:21Speaker 4: the league. The Ravens have a good run defense. The
- 10:24Speaker 4: Patriots couldn't run the ball a ton because they were
- 10:27Speaker 4: down by ten points in the fourth quarter against Baltimore.
- 10:30Speaker 4: But if you look at the individual stats, Ormanrie Stevenson
- 10:34Speaker 4: was averaging over six yards of carry against Baltimore before
- 10:38Speaker 4: the lead got you know them out of the run
- 10:39Speaker 4: game and got them into a drop that pass game script.
- 10:42Speaker 4: So they were running the ball well in Baltimore too.
- 10:45Speaker 4: They just couldn't continue to run the football in the
- 10:48Speaker 4: second half of that game. So all a long winded
- 10:51Speaker 4: way of saying, this run game has kind of found
- 10:54Speaker 4: itself a little bit.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Now.
- 10:55Speaker 4: I want to kind of break that down a little
- 10:58Speaker 4: bit because three out of these four games or without
- 11:01Speaker 4: Will Campbell, a couple of them were without Jared Wilson.
- 11:04Speaker 4: So I know a lot of people have asked me
- 11:06Speaker 4: on Twitter and stuff, is that a common thread there?
- 11:09Speaker 4: You know, is there a reason that the veteran guys
- 11:12Speaker 4: like Low and Ben Brown they've had better run success?
- 11:15Speaker 4: And the other thing that I think is really, you know,
- 11:18Speaker 4: mostly important, you know, on your side of the street
- 11:20Speaker 4: here a little bit, it's January. It's playoff football, right,
- 11:25Speaker 4: I'm not saying you have to run the ball forty
- 11:27Speaker 4: times against the charge.
- 11:28Speaker 3: You have to be able to run the ball successfully.
- 11:30Speaker 2: You have to have balance, you have to be able
- 11:32Speaker 2: to run the ball a little bit.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Nobody's going to want to tackle.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Nobody's gonna want to tackle. If you get inclement weather,
- 11:37Speaker 4: which I think you might on Sunday, it might be raining.
- 11:41Speaker 4: If you get inclement weather, that's going to be huge.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Uh.
- 11:44Speaker 4: This is an important piece to this puzzle. And I
- 11:46Speaker 4: think the biggest thing to me, you know, more so
- 11:48Speaker 4: than the weather thing, because you know that's not really
- 11:50Speaker 4: my thing, but the balance of the offense that it
- 11:54Speaker 4: gives you, even if they're not like a great situational
- 11:57Speaker 4: running team, because they still have some issues on yardage
- 12:00Speaker 4: power situations, if they can run for explosives, if they
- 12:04Speaker 4: can run productively on first and second down to set
- 12:07Speaker 4: up play action, set up that flea flicker that was
- 12:10Speaker 4: beautiful to Afton Chisholm, you know, like those types of things.
- 12:13Speaker 2: That makes it so much easier.
- 12:16Speaker 1: For a twenty three year old quarterback in his first
- 12:19Speaker 1: playoff game and hopefully his first playoff run where they're
- 12:23Speaker 1: not gonna ask. Drake made a drop back forty five
- 12:25Speaker 1: times against the Chargers on Sunday Night. Yeah, and I
- 12:28Speaker 1: think the big thing you talk about the run game
- 12:29Speaker 1: finally getting going, and I'm curious your thoughts on Jared
- 12:31Speaker 1: Wilson and Ben Brown. But just and this is something
- 12:34Speaker 1: I was big on before the year. They're gonna have
- 12:35Speaker 1: this two headed monster, right, Stevenson and Henderson, and just
- 12:38Speaker 1: the way these guys their different strengths playing to what
- 12:41Speaker 1: McDaniels wants to do, like really looking forward to it.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And then obviously that didn't come to fruition. They were
- 12:48Speaker 1: just in this is life in the NFL, right, It
- 12:50Speaker 1: never lined up. So you had Henderson started the year
- 12:53Speaker 1: with more growing pains than I think a lot of
- 12:55Speaker 1: people expected. Yeah, then you had Ramandros Stevenson got hurt,
- 13:00Speaker 1: Henderson got hurt. Then the line was banged up, and
- 13:01Speaker 1: like they were never all on the same page and
- 13:05Speaker 1: now they are not on in the same bit. Like
- 13:07Speaker 1: guys were hurt, right, It just it was ship's passing
- 13:10Speaker 1: in the night. And I feel like finally in the
- 13:13Speaker 1: last like three weeks, they actually have everything at they're
- 13:16Speaker 1: disposal on the run game that they were hoping to
- 13:18Speaker 1: have and it started to take off. So I love
- 13:21Speaker 1: that the run games hot at the right time. They
- 13:22Speaker 1: are gonna need it in the playoffs, and I think,
- 13:24Speaker 1: like this is kind of what I pictured going into
- 13:26Speaker 1: the year the run game would be for one reason
- 13:29Speaker 1: or another, it kind of couldn't be for long stretches.
- 13:31Speaker 1: But they're at full go now with this group, and
- 13:34Speaker 1: it's awesome. And to your point, even the little things, right, yeah,
- 13:37Speaker 1: they're they're both breaking big runs and it is Miami.
- 13:40Speaker 1: But how about remonder Stevens, not reminder Stevenson.
- 13:42Speaker 3: How about he did it?
- 13:43Speaker 1: But Travon Henderson. How about Trayon Henderson punching one in
- 13:46Speaker 1: on the goal line. We've talked about their issues running
- 13:48Speaker 1: in short yardage, and they had those at times in
- 13:49Speaker 1: this game. But like, all right, if Trayvon Henderson's gonna
- 13:54Speaker 1: give you some power on the goal line, He's run
- 13:55Speaker 1: with a lot more power the last few weeks. That
- 13:58Speaker 1: to me is a great sign. I even didn't I hate, like, yeah,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I hate they got stopped on fourth and one, that
- 14:03Speaker 1: little end around whatever you want to call it, where
- 14:06Speaker 1: they came out like a full house formation.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's it's like vintage Veer stuff like that. Yeah,
- 14:12Speaker 4: And It's like I liked it too, and I know
- 14:15Speaker 4: it didn't work because you have, like Drake May and
- 14:18Speaker 4: Pop Douglas are kind of giving you that backside.
- 14:21Speaker 3: So I liked it. They showed it.
- 14:23Speaker 1: And if you go back and watch that, if Drake
- 14:26Speaker 1: May pitches that ball to Pop Douglas, he's one on
- 14:28Speaker 1: one in space, right, which is exactly where you want
- 14:31Speaker 1: Pop Douglas to be. So you know, maybe you bring
- 14:34Speaker 1: that back. I think they showed a lot of stuff.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I was getting some questions about why they were running
- 14:38Speaker 1: so many trick plays in that game.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Like why wouldn't you say it for the playoffs? And
- 14:41Speaker 3: you know, they had the flea flicker that at the
- 14:43Speaker 3: end around, They had that formation that they use. They
- 14:45Speaker 3: showed the wildcat.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Well, now you've shown it, right, and it's that many
- 14:49Speaker 1: more things the Chargers now have to prepare for, even
- 14:52Speaker 1: if you don't use it again, because you're not just
- 14:53Speaker 1: preparing for what they showed. You're now preparing for that
- 14:56Speaker 1: formation to pitch the ball back to Jamario Douglas. You're
- 14:59Speaker 1: preparing for the where Remandre throws it or somebody comes
- 15:02Speaker 1: in motion. It becomes an end around thing, right, So
- 15:05Speaker 1: I think that's why they showed as much as they
- 15:07Speaker 1: did in that game. But yeah, just to get back
- 15:09Speaker 1: to it, even though they got stopped, give me that
- 15:11Speaker 1: formation again and toss the ball to Pop Douglas. I
- 15:13Speaker 1: think that could look really cool or.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Just yeah, like there's just so many different variations of
- 15:18Speaker 4: things that you can run out of that formation. And
- 15:21Speaker 4: they didn't have the numbers to the play side. Ultimately
- 15:25Speaker 4: it was four on three over there, but I do
- 15:27Speaker 4: think they didn't block it very well. You know, there
- 15:29Speaker 4: Mumford falls off his block and then Ben Brown is
- 15:32Speaker 4: pulling and he pulls out to the corner and the
- 15:35Speaker 4: linebacker comes in the inside gap and takes the inside
- 15:38Speaker 4: and gets Henderson. So ideally I think you have Ben
- 15:43Speaker 4: Brown when he pulls, you know, he takes that linebacker
- 15:46Speaker 4: and leaves the corner for Trevion Henderson. Because now all
- 15:49Speaker 4: Trevion Henderson's got to do is either make the corner
- 15:51Speaker 4: miss or does run right through the corner and get
- 15:53Speaker 4: the yard right. So either way, I feel like that's
- 15:56Speaker 4: a better matchup for Henderson is to leave the corner Henderson,
- 16:00Speaker 4: so you can make that adjustment and make those corrections
- 16:03Speaker 4: pretty quickly, and then of course, you have the backside
- 16:05Speaker 4: action of kind of like a speed option basically on
- 16:09Speaker 4: the backside with Drake May and Pop Douglas where if
- 16:13Speaker 4: that player that ends up staying outside for Miami, if
- 16:17Speaker 4: he doesn't stay outside, you know that either could be
- 16:20Speaker 4: basically like a naked where there's nobody out there, or
- 16:24Speaker 4: you know, at least a one on one situation for
- 16:27Speaker 4: a really good you know, jitterbug like Pop Douglas in
- 16:30Speaker 4: space and maybe you play that two man game with
- 16:32Speaker 4: May where you know he draws the guy in or doesn't,
- 16:35Speaker 4: and you know that that whole thing. So there's just
- 16:37Speaker 4: a whole lot of different variations of things that you
- 16:40Speaker 4: can run out of that formation. So I agree with you,
- 16:44Speaker 4: I wouldn't necessarily grade results on that play. Like I
- 16:48Speaker 4: think that's a cool process and a cool formation that
- 16:51Speaker 4: they can do a lot of different things with. And
- 16:53Speaker 4: with the run game, you know, we were talking about
- 16:57Speaker 4: this yesterday on pu and Fred and Paul were kind
- 17:00Speaker 4: of pouring water cold water on this whole run game
- 17:03Speaker 4: thing because of the level of competition, and like my
- 17:06Speaker 4: two rebuttals to that one.
- 17:08Speaker 2: If you're going to run the ball, you want to run.
- 17:10Speaker 4: For explosives, like they you know, they're like, well six
- 17:12Speaker 4: to one point one yards of carry, but how many
- 17:14Speaker 4: big runs did they have? It's like, yeah, that's the
- 17:16Speaker 4: whole that's the point of running the ball is that
- 17:18Speaker 4: you're going to break a couple of big ones. The
- 17:21Speaker 4: other one, you know, is the level of competition. But
- 17:24Speaker 4: you know, one of our first years covering this team
- 17:26Speaker 4: was twenty eighteen, the last two weeks of the season,
- 17:29Speaker 4: and they played the Bills and the Jets. And this
- 17:31Speaker 4: was before the Bills were really good. You know, this
- 17:33Speaker 4: was like a water down early Josh Allen, Bills and
- 17:37Speaker 4: the Patriots ran for a combined four hundred yards in
- 17:40Speaker 4: those last two weeks of the season.
- 17:42Speaker 2: And what do they do.
- 17:43Speaker 4: They carried that into the playoffs. James Devlin, Sony Michelle
- 17:47Speaker 4: power eye right at you, and against the Chargers and
- 17:50Speaker 4: the Chiefs, that's how they opened both of those games.
- 17:53Speaker 4: So even though the level of competition wasn't great these
- 17:56Speaker 4: last couple of weeks, just getting those reps and getting
- 18:00Speaker 4: that feel for the run game, I do think that
- 18:03Speaker 4: that can translate even against better teams. So I do
- 18:06Speaker 4: think that can carry into the playoffs. And there's precedent
- 18:09Speaker 4: for that working, you know, kind of having these tune
- 18:12Speaker 4: up games late in the season against worse teams or
- 18:15Speaker 4: worse run defenses, and then carrying that into the playoffs.
- 18:18Speaker 4: And you know they're going to play a good run
- 18:20Speaker 4: defense on Sunday Night with the Chargers, but they might
- 18:22Speaker 4: not always play a good run defense in this playoff tournament.
- 18:25Speaker 4: You know, the Bills do not have a good run defense.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Jacksonville's run defense is okay but not dominant. You know,
- 18:33Speaker 4: they might play some teams that can't stop the run
- 18:35Speaker 4: in this run hopefully, So you know, I look at
- 18:39Speaker 4: it as all positives with the with the run game.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Lasting on the run game. Yeah, gotta give Rimandre some flowers.
- 18:46Speaker 4: I mean, Ramandre Stephenson played maybe one of the most
- 18:49Speaker 4: complete games I've seen the Patriots right playoff last.
- 18:52Speaker 3: And this was the cap on it. This was above
- 18:54Speaker 3: and beyond.
- 18:55Speaker 1: But I would say, really, since he's come back from
- 18:57Speaker 1: that toe injury, Yeah, this is the best football I've
- 19:00Speaker 1: seen him play. And I'm obviously somebody that's been a
- 19:02Speaker 1: fan of his. You know, even with the fumbling issues
- 19:05Speaker 1: earlier in the year, I was saying, no, you got
- 19:07Speaker 1: to keep him involved, you got to get him, right,
- 19:09Speaker 1: They're going to need him down the road, but he's
- 19:12Speaker 1: been this is another level for him, and if they
- 19:15Speaker 1: get this version of him in the playoffs, you know,
- 19:17Speaker 1: you combine that ability to his contact balance right now
- 19:22Speaker 1: is on and it's always been one of.
- 19:24Speaker 3: His better trades. Unbelievable.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:26Speaker 1: And if you get a guy that can create hidden
- 19:28Speaker 1: yardage and break off chunks like that, and you can
- 19:31Speaker 1: bind that kind of running back with what Drake is
- 19:32Speaker 1: doing in the passing game, the offense kind of becomes
- 19:35Speaker 1: a nightmare to defend.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Yeah, And that's sort of my point about the balance too, right,
- 19:39Speaker 4: is now they when you get into the playoffs, you
- 19:42Speaker 4: know these games are going to declare different ways and
- 19:45Speaker 4: you have to have different you have to be able
- 19:47Speaker 4: to fight different styles. Like you're not going to always
- 19:50Speaker 4: just be able to go in there and you know,
- 19:52Speaker 4: have Drake may just completing bombs all game long, because
- 19:55Speaker 4: that's the strength of this offense right now, is their
- 19:57Speaker 4: explosiveness in the passing game. Not going to be able
- 20:00Speaker 4: to do that every single week.
- 20:01Speaker 3: This is where you really get the value of being
- 20:03Speaker 3: a game planting.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Right, And you have to have balance and you have
- 20:06Speaker 4: to be able to win games different ways. You know,
- 20:08Speaker 4: I just brought up the eighteen Patriots. You know, they
- 20:10Speaker 4: win a game in Kansas City that's essentially turns into
- 20:13Speaker 4: a shootout and goes into overtime, has decided, you know,
- 20:16Speaker 4: in the thirties, and then they play a Super Bowl
- 20:18Speaker 4: where it's thirteen to three, right, like that sort of
- 20:21Speaker 4: thing where you have to be able to pivot, you
- 20:24Speaker 4: have to be able to take what the defense is
- 20:26Speaker 4: giving you. And if on Sunday night, the Chargers come
- 20:28Speaker 4: out and they play a bunch of two high safeties
- 20:30Speaker 4: and they lighten the box and they take all the
- 20:32Speaker 4: deep passing away from Drake May with their quarters coverages
- 20:35Speaker 4: and all that kind of stuff that we'll get to, Like,
- 20:38Speaker 4: you got to.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Be able to run the ball like that.
- 20:40Speaker 4: That's the that's the counter punch to that sort of
- 20:43Speaker 4: style of defense.
- 20:44Speaker 2: So all good stuff.
- 20:46Speaker 4: I just thought Remandra Stevenson was exceptional in this game.
- 20:49Speaker 2: It all walks like not just running the ball, running the.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Ball obviously really well, you know, the touchdown catch, the
- 20:55Speaker 4: route that he runs on that touchdown catches terrific, you know,
- 20:59Speaker 4: absolutely burned. Tyrol Dotson, the linebacker for the Dolphins pass
- 21:03Speaker 4: protection It just was a complete performance from him that,
- 21:08Speaker 4: like I said, was one of the better running back
- 21:10Speaker 4: performances I've seen by a Patriot in quite some time,
- 21:13Speaker 4: you know, probably you know, at least over the last
- 21:16Speaker 4: you know, four or five years. Moving on last one
- 21:19Speaker 4: here on the Dolphins, and then I promise we'll we'll
- 21:21Speaker 4: get to the Chargers and the important stuff.
- 21:24Speaker 2: This defense, this.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Defense I feel like has gotten Is it fair to
- 21:28Speaker 4: say it's gotten a little bit controversial?
- 21:30Speaker 2: You know, do they have a good defense today?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Idea, they've had a couple of these games this yere
- 21:34Speaker 1: where like as you're watching the game doesn't feel good,
- 21:37Speaker 1: it's like pulling teeth, like, oh man, this is really rough.
- 21:40Speaker 3: What happened?
- 21:41Speaker 1: And then you look up, Oh they allowed under two
- 21:43Speaker 1: hundred yards and only ten points.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Yeah, So this was, you know, fitting way to end it.
- 21:47Speaker 1: This was I think a fulsemation of what the twenty
- 21:50Speaker 1: twenty five Patriots defense is.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:53Speaker 4: It feels like at times at things they're too easy.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Not necessarily in this game against the run, I thought
- 21:59Speaker 4: they were pretty good against the run throughout, but in
- 22:01Speaker 4: the past game, you know, they it's a third and
- 22:03Speaker 4: six and Carlon Davis is standing six yards off the
- 22:07Speaker 4: line of scrimmage and gives up a slant in front
- 22:09Speaker 4: of him for seven yards. And you're just like, right,
- 22:11Speaker 4: that's just too easy, Like why are we not up
- 22:13Speaker 4: in guys' faces? Why are we not pressing? Are they
- 22:16Speaker 4: not playing man to man with those corners? Like I
- 22:18Speaker 4: get all that frustration. And in this game, you know,
- 22:21Speaker 4: they the first two drives from Miami twenty two plays,
- 22:24Speaker 4: one hundred and twenty two yards, They last scrimmaged inside
- 22:27Speaker 4: the Patriots eight yard line on both drives. Now they
- 22:30Speaker 4: got the fourth down stop on the first drive. The
- 22:33Speaker 4: second drive, the Dolphins scored a touchdown. And this was
- 22:35Speaker 4: without Jalen Waddle, without Devon ah Chan of course you
- 22:38Speaker 4: know he hasn't played in forever, but without Tyreek Hill goes.
- 22:41Speaker 4: So this is not the Miami Dolphins offense that Tua
- 22:45Speaker 4: was unstoppable, you know for against the Patriots for a
- 22:48Speaker 4: while there. That being said, the one caveat that I
- 22:51Speaker 4: have been using and used last week too, I said
- 22:55Speaker 4: in the in the open ace cut it perfectly. This
- 22:57Speaker 4: is a start, fast starting Miami Dolphins offense. They have
- 23:01Speaker 4: been really, really good in their opening scripts since Quinn
- 23:04Speaker 4: Ewers took over. Mike McDaniel's good at it. You know,
- 23:07Speaker 4: he's good at scripting you up. And this is something
- 23:10Speaker 4: that I would say too, is what's the word. It's
- 23:16Speaker 4: kind of happening all over the NFL this year that
- 23:18Speaker 4: these offensive coaches have gotten really, really good at the
- 23:21Speaker 4: script and they a lot of these teams are giving
- 23:24Speaker 4: up opening drive touchdowns. Now, the Patriots are one of
- 23:27Speaker 4: the worst in the league at it, so they're even
- 23:29Speaker 4: relatively speaking bad. But this is still something that has
- 23:33Speaker 4: been propped up across the league that these whiz kids,
- 23:36Speaker 4: these offensive coordinators and these head coaches, you know, the
- 23:38Speaker 4: Shanahans of the world and stuff like that, they come
- 23:41Speaker 4: out with these great opening scripts and defenses adjust eventually
- 23:45Speaker 4: and the good ones are able to shut it down.
- 23:47Speaker 4: So after those first two drives the Miami Dolphins ran
- 23:51Speaker 4: thirty two plays, they gained fifty eight.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Yards the rest of the game.
- 23:55Speaker 4: So as much as I want to sit here and
- 23:57Speaker 4: say sometimes I get really frustrated with the defense in
- 24:01Speaker 4: the scheme and what they're doing, because they absolutely do.
- 24:04Speaker 4: The starts of games are a little bit troubling as
- 24:07Speaker 4: the opponents get better, but then they go to the
- 24:10Speaker 4: last three quarters of the game and they completely shut
- 24:12Speaker 4: down Miami. So it's it's hard to kind of, you know,
- 24:15Speaker 4: find like where I'm at with this whole thing.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Defensively, Yeah, it's weird because we keep saying it's not sustainable,
- 24:22Speaker 1: but they keep winning, right, So so true. You know,
- 24:26Speaker 1: I'm going to say it in the playoffs eventually, I
- 24:28Speaker 1: think you can get got If you have a slow
- 24:30Speaker 1: start and you can't recover, you're not always going to recover.
- 24:32Speaker 3: But they keep recovering.
- 24:33Speaker 1: So I kind of have to, you know, tip my
- 24:36Speaker 1: cap them and say they keep recovering, right.
- 24:37Speaker 4: I mean, like the fear of course is and you
- 24:39Speaker 4: know this is not any like groundbreaking analysis, but the
- 24:43Speaker 4: fear of course is that you're going to play a
- 24:44Speaker 4: good team. They're going to go fourteenth to nothing, and
- 24:47Speaker 4: you're just gonna find yourself in a hole that you
- 24:49Speaker 4: can't get out of. Now, you like to think the
- 24:51Speaker 4: Patriots offense can go toe to tone, you wouldn't you know,
- 24:54Speaker 4: go completely into a nap on offense too. But if
- 24:58Speaker 4: the defense doesn't get that for it down stop against Miami,
- 25:01Speaker 4: then Miami opens this game touchdown, touchdown, and then you
- 25:04Speaker 4: might find yourself in a deficit, right, And that's the
- 25:07Speaker 4: part that is concerning. But the defense every week, it
- 25:11Speaker 4: seems like the game declares they get a feel for
- 25:13Speaker 4: what the opponent is doing. They took a few adjustments,
- 25:17Speaker 4: they get a feel for it, and they settled down.
- 25:20Speaker 4: So until they stopped doing that, then I guess we
- 25:22Speaker 4: just have to give them the benefit of doubt, right
- 25:25Speaker 4: all right? So that was only thoughts I really had
- 25:27Speaker 4: from this Miami game. Like I said, I didn't want
- 25:30Speaker 4: to spend a ton of time on it. Got almost
- 25:32Speaker 4: spent twenty six minutes on it, which was one more
- 25:34Speaker 4: than I wanted.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Yeah, block field goal obviously not great. That felt like
- 25:37Speaker 1: more of a protection thing than a Borgalis thing. Agreed,
- 25:40Speaker 1: So they still have some things to clean up on
- 25:42Speaker 1: special teams. A little shaky coming into the playoffs here
- 25:45Speaker 1: in that unit. But credit to Andy Burgalis the longest
- 25:49Speaker 1: non preseason field goal in the history. So let's say
- 25:51Speaker 1: you have to say no, Castawski had a sixty yarder,
- 25:54Speaker 1: credit to him. But you know, I think good moment
- 25:58Speaker 1: for the kid, and you know, have that one block
- 26:00Speaker 1: even though it wasn't his fault. You know, you don't
- 26:02Speaker 1: know where kickers confidence is at so I think it
- 26:04Speaker 1: was big to have him come back and droll that
- 26:05Speaker 1: like sneaky. The Patriots should beat the Dolphins if even
- 26:10Speaker 1: if he misses that kick. Ye but and very able
- 26:12Speaker 1: talked about this after the game. They have the kick blocked,
- 26:15Speaker 1: the defense comes out off the short field, forces the
- 26:17Speaker 1: field goal offense with no timeouts, gets in a field
- 26:19Speaker 1: goal range. Borgalis hits a long kick and the Patriots
- 26:22Speaker 1: kind of run away from there. Like momentum play, momentum
- 26:25Speaker 1: play going into the break, and you want that from
- 26:27Speaker 1: your special teams.
- 26:27Speaker 3: It's momentum plays.
- 26:28Speaker 2: So especially because Miami got the kickoff to start in.
- 26:31Speaker 1: The second half, knowing that you have a guy that
- 26:33Speaker 1: can hit a fifty nine yarder in the cold too.
- 26:36Speaker 1: That was one of the questions when they took him,
- 26:37Speaker 1: and we said it at the time, there are gonna
- 26:39Speaker 1: be questions about him kicking in the cold, but you
- 26:42Speaker 1: there's no answer to it until he does it. We
- 26:44Speaker 1: just don't know, all right, you have a fifty nine
- 26:47Speaker 1: yarder and cold pretty good?
- 26:48Speaker 3: Yeah, him.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And for what I just said about special teams going
- 26:51Speaker 1: in a little shaky, it's more like the coverage units
- 26:53Speaker 1: the up front units.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Borgalis and Behinger was really good in this game, both
- 26:58Speaker 3: going in the in the playoffs feeling good.
- 26:59Speaker 4: I think, yeah, I actually did watch the field goal
- 27:03Speaker 4: protection had to write in a game like this, and.
- 27:05Speaker 3: I congratulations for doing your job.
- 27:07Speaker 4: I do feel like the special teams every week, I
- 27:10Speaker 4: feel like there's like what like there's a good there's
- 27:14Speaker 4: a good thing, and there's a bad thing. Like this
- 27:16Speaker 4: week it was the blocked field goal against the Jets.
- 27:19Speaker 4: They gave up a fake punt and then they stopped
- 27:21Speaker 4: a fake punt. You know, it just feels like it
- 27:23Speaker 4: keeps going back and forth where they can't find that
- 27:27Speaker 4: consistent execution in all phases of special teams. The one
- 27:31Speaker 4: thing that I found a little bit promising was that
- 27:36Speaker 4: the Dolphins tried the same rush on the fifty nine
- 27:39Speaker 4: yard field goal attempt and they fixed it and they
- 27:42Speaker 4: blocked it in high Miss and Verderian Lower were fine
- 27:45Speaker 4: on that kick, So it was probably some sort of
- 27:48Speaker 4: you know, Low took the inside gap, Himis took the
- 27:51Speaker 4: outside gap.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Nobody blocked Sack.
- 27:52Speaker 4: A stealer, so there's obviously some sort of assignment miscute.
- 27:57Speaker 4: Wasn't like the Steeler went right through and low or
- 28:01Speaker 4: I miss and just overpowered them. It was more of
- 28:05Speaker 4: like nobody blocked them. So in that case, like that's
- 28:08Speaker 4: usually a quick tweak and a quick adjustment on the
- 28:10Speaker 4: sideline and and you know whatever, you move on. But yeah,
- 28:14Speaker 4: that was not great. And we saw it on Sunday
- 28:18Speaker 4: night with Baltimore and Pittsburgh. You missed a field goal
- 28:20Speaker 4: I did to win a game, and now John Harbaugh's fired, right,
- 28:25Speaker 4: Like so it just it can fall apart quickly.
- 28:28Speaker 2: I want to get to some of that stuff too.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Like Washington, I think is another like cautionary tale that
- 28:33Speaker 4: I've always brought up, But Washington blew out both their coordinators.
- 28:38Speaker 4: They were in the NFC championship game. Yeah, you know,
- 28:40Speaker 4: like this stuff this changes quickly.
- 28:43Speaker 3: So what have you done for me lately? League?
- 28:44Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 28:45Speaker 4: And along those lines, you know, I think that there's
- 28:50Speaker 4: a lot of you know, getting into the Chargers. There's
- 28:54Speaker 4: a lot of people that I think feel that the
- 28:57Speaker 4: Patriots are kind of playing with house money at this point.
- 28:59Speaker 4: You know, when four team games in Mike Rable's first season,
- 29:03Speaker 4: for Drake may to have an MVP caliber season in
- 29:06Speaker 4: his second year, Like this is all kind of gravy
- 29:08Speaker 4: from here, and I mostly agree with that sentiment. But
- 29:12Speaker 4: at the same time, I do think that winning a
- 29:14Speaker 4: playoff game changes the feel of the entire thing. I
- 29:18Speaker 4: think it exercises some demons of like twenty twenty one PTSD,
- 29:23Speaker 4: where they have a good regular season and then they,
- 29:25Speaker 4: you know, they get destroyed in the playoffs by Buffalo.
- 29:28Speaker 4: I think that there's a lot of teams in recent memory.
- 29:31Speaker 4: We are all obviously just closer to the twenty one
- 29:34Speaker 4: team with the Patriots, but there's a lot of teams
- 29:36Speaker 4: in recent memory that had these nice regular seasons where
- 29:39Speaker 4: they have these kind of comebacks or turnarounds or whatever
- 29:43Speaker 4: you want to call it, and they flame out in
- 29:45Speaker 4: the playoffs and then it kind of falls apart, right,
- 29:48Speaker 4: And the proof of concept of winning this game on
- 29:51Speaker 4: Sunday Night, where they can come out of this season
- 29:53Speaker 4: and say we won the division, we won a playoff game,
- 29:57Speaker 4: I think that is actually really huge. And even though
- 30:00Speaker 4: it's it is a little bit greedy to want them
- 30:04Speaker 4: to now to win a playoff.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Against greedy, I think it's fair to reset expectations when
- 30:07Speaker 1: the team's played the way it has now to say
- 30:09Speaker 1: like Super Bowl or bust is getting greedy right to
- 30:12Speaker 1: say they should win a playoff game against a bang
- 30:14Speaker 1: up team, Southwest team coming east, different time zone, different climate,
- 30:19Speaker 1: all that. Like I think that's a fair expectation.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I do too.
- 30:22Speaker 4: And you know, if they win this game, house money
- 30:25Speaker 4: the rest of the way, right, Like, if they win
- 30:26Speaker 4: this one, I'm not gonna kill them for losing, you know,
- 30:30Speaker 4: in the divisional round or the AFC Championship game or
- 30:32Speaker 4: whatever it might be. But in order to come out
- 30:35Speaker 4: of this season, to feel like you really accomplish something
- 30:38Speaker 4: beyond may was fantastic.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Rabel's clearly the right higher.
- 30:43Speaker 4: Like you have this whole thing built out now that
- 30:46Speaker 4: you feel really good about. I just want a little
- 30:48Speaker 4: bit more, you know, you just want that little cherry
- 30:51Speaker 4: on top would be to win this game on Sunday night.
- 30:53Speaker 4: And like you said that, they feel primed for it.
- 30:57Speaker 4: Like it feels like that this Chargers team, although it's
- 31:00Speaker 4: a playoff team and there's they present problems and we're
- 31:03Speaker 4: going to break it all down here, they feel beatable.
- 31:07Speaker 4: It doesn't feel like, you know, they're playing that Buffalo
- 31:11Speaker 4: team in twenty one or it's Mahomes or it's you know,
- 31:14Speaker 4: someone like that that it feels like a wagon is
- 31:17Speaker 4: coming here on Sunday night with these Chargers. So let's start,
- 31:21Speaker 4: you know, let's start with the Chargers offense, because I
- 31:25Speaker 4: think the biggest thing, you know, the two fears that
- 31:28Speaker 4: I have about this game, one of them is on
- 31:31Speaker 4: the defensive side for the Chargers Patriots offense, and that
- 31:34Speaker 4: is Jesse Minter and that scheme and the match coverages
- 31:38Speaker 4: and just it's kind of a unique different type of
- 31:41Speaker 4: defense that you have a little bit of concern that
- 31:45Speaker 4: maybe Drake may is just not going to see the
- 31:47Speaker 4: field particularly well against the defense like this. The other
- 31:51Speaker 4: thing that I would be concerned about, even though he's
- 31:54Speaker 4: playing with one hand, is Justin Herbert is phenomenal. Like
- 31:57Speaker 4: Justin Herbert has the ability to come into this game
- 32:00Speaker 4: and be the best player on the field and take
- 32:02Speaker 4: the game over and win the quarterback battle and all
- 32:05Speaker 4: that kind of stuff.
- 32:06Speaker 2: And the fact that he has dragged.
- 32:09Speaker 4: This Chargers team with this offensive line and an okay
- 32:13Speaker 4: group of skilled players. I don't think they're great. I
- 32:15Speaker 4: think they're okay to eleven wins. Is because he is
- 32:18Speaker 4: an MVP caliber quarterback and he has that potential just
- 32:22Speaker 4: like Drake may to elevate everything. So if I had
- 32:24Speaker 4: to be afraid of anything in this matchup, Number one
- 32:28Speaker 4: is definitely just justin Herbert being a star and just
- 32:32Speaker 4: going out there and having a game and really, you know,
- 32:36Speaker 4: just having one of those dominant justin Herbert games.
- 32:39Speaker 2: He's great.
- 32:39Speaker 4: Now that being said, there's a lot of things that
- 32:41Speaker 4: they could take advantage of on the offensive line, but
- 32:44Speaker 4: Herbert has one of the few quarterbacks in the league
- 32:47Speaker 4: where I say, the quarterback matchup is about even you know,
- 32:51Speaker 4: it could maybe go to the Chargers at any given Sunday.
- 32:55Speaker 1: To me, it comes down and Herbert's played really well
- 32:58Speaker 1: with the hand. Now, how well does he handle the
- 33:02Speaker 1: ball in the cold and maybe wet like that could
- 33:04Speaker 1: be something that tilts things towards the Patriots. But I'm
- 33:08Speaker 1: really fascinated buying this game, and I don't want to
- 33:10Speaker 1: just blow by Herbert. But it's Herbert adjacent. A lot
- 33:13Speaker 1: of the times we talk about these playoff games, it's
- 33:15Speaker 1: strength on strength, right, Okay, who has with both these
- 33:19Speaker 1: teams usually lean on this. They're going head to head.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Only one team's going to have the advantage. Here, which
- 33:22Speaker 1: team has advantage? I'm actually more fascinated in a weakness
- 33:26Speaker 1: on weakness matchup in this game, and that is Patriots
- 33:29Speaker 1: pass rush against Chargers offensive line.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Couldn't agree more.
- 33:32Speaker 1: You know, Herbert's been one of the most pressured quarterbacks
- 33:36Speaker 1: in the league. It's been He's the most pressured quarterback
- 33:38Speaker 1: in the league. This is a quarterbacks This is the.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Worst pass blocking offensive line. Talking about the Chargers that
- 33:45Speaker 4: some of these advanced metrics that I am obsessed with,
- 33:48Speaker 4: you know, win rate things like that, since they started
- 33:51Speaker 4: tracking some of these this data, this is the worst
- 33:54Speaker 4: offensive line they've seen, Like worse than the Patriots line
- 33:57Speaker 4: last year.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean this is good. They've had a
- 34:01Speaker 1: number of injuries. This is not close to what it
- 34:03Speaker 1: was supposed to be. Supposed to be a strength going into
- 34:05Speaker 1: the season when you have Sean Slater and Joe allt
- 34:07Speaker 1: should be they don't have you those guys.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Herbert's turnover rate way up this year.
- 34:13Speaker 1: You know, it's the yards per attempt are down, And
- 34:16Speaker 1: I think I don't think that's him playing worse. I
- 34:18Speaker 1: think that's a product of the group in front of him.
- 34:19Speaker 1: He sped up at times things like that. So I
- 34:23Speaker 1: as good as Herbert has been, he has not been
- 34:27Speaker 1: just like most quarterbacks, he's not been as good under pressure.
- 34:30Speaker 5: Yea.
- 34:30Speaker 3: And that to me is where you level this game.
- 34:32Speaker 1: If you're the Patriots, can this pass rush take advantage
- 34:34Speaker 1: of a beat up Chargers offensive line and getting justin
- 34:37Speaker 1: Herbert's face? If they do that, he's not that He's
- 34:40Speaker 1: not that guy. He's not that guy when you're getting
- 34:43Speaker 1: in his face regularly, and if it's cold, and if
- 34:46Speaker 1: it's kind of nasty out and if he's hurting, you know,
- 34:49Speaker 1: can you really put his back up against the wall
- 34:52Speaker 1: the Patriots. To bring it back to your point about
- 34:54Speaker 1: like Justin Herbert being a good player, because he is.
- 34:59Speaker 1: That's how you win this gaming for the Patriots is
- 35:01Speaker 1: you put Justin Herbert's back up against the wall. You
- 35:03Speaker 1: make him uncomfortable early, you make him uncomfortable often. I
- 35:07Speaker 1: think if they can do that, everything else takes care
- 35:10Speaker 1: of itself from there. That, to me is what this
- 35:12Speaker 1: comes down to. Herbert's passerrating, by the way against when
- 35:16Speaker 1: when kept clean one o four point six under pressure
- 35:19Speaker 1: seventy four point four, that's a Every quarterback's passerrating is
- 35:23Speaker 1: lower under pressure.
- 35:24Speaker 3: But I think at one point Drake Mays was higher
- 35:26Speaker 3: this year. Actually that's his he was.
- 35:29Speaker 2: His passer rating under pressure is over one hundred this year.
- 35:31Speaker 3: It's insane.
- 35:32Speaker 1: But yeah, like that one oh four to seventy four
- 35:34Speaker 1: is a pretty wide gap.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Yeah, so he's eighteenth in EPA per drop back under
- 35:40Speaker 4: pressure this year. Okay, so pedestrian, well, and what is
- 35:44Speaker 4: he when he's not?
- 35:45Speaker 6: Uh?
- 35:46Speaker 3: I think because it's all about the gap.
- 35:47Speaker 4: So the problem with the gap in this particular instance
- 35:50Speaker 4: is this Chargers offensive line has just been so terrible
- 35:53Speaker 4: that the Chargers metrics aren't good on offense. You know,
- 35:57Speaker 4: they're twenty fourth in EPAAN scoring, Like that's just not
- 36:02Speaker 4: they're not a great offense on paper because the line
- 36:04Speaker 4: is just so beaten up in so bad. Now you
- 36:09Speaker 4: just mentioned though, like this is not a dominant Patriots
- 36:12Speaker 4: pass rush, you know, like I was watching the Chargers
- 36:15Speaker 4: Texans game, you know, over the last week, just watching
- 36:18Speaker 4: the film of that game. That's a no contest kind
- 36:21Speaker 4: of game because the Chargers can't block anybody, right, and
- 36:24Speaker 4: they're going up against that pass rush from Houston and
- 36:27Speaker 4: it's just it's blaps. It's like there's just no chance
- 36:30Speaker 4: that they're going to be able to protect Herbert. This
- 36:32Speaker 4: game feels a little bit differently. And I've heard this
- 36:34Speaker 4: commentary from some of the national people that you know,
- 36:36Speaker 4: if you're the Chargers, this is probably one of the
- 36:38Speaker 4: better matchups for you because the Patriots don't have will
- 36:42Speaker 4: Anderson and Daniel Hunter. Now with that being said, I
- 36:46Speaker 4: do think that the area that the Patriots can dominate
- 36:48Speaker 4: is on the interior with Milton Williams and Barmore. And
- 36:51Speaker 4: the thing I wrote down, you know, on my notes
- 36:54Speaker 4: here is just those guys have to dominate like they
- 36:57Speaker 4: the Patriots need. And this is a big rabel, as
- 37:00Speaker 4: like your best players need to play well in this league.
- 37:02Speaker 4: They need Christian Barmore and Milton Williams to dominate.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Like.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Those guys have to be creating havoc on the interior.
- 37:09Speaker 4: It doesn't necessarily need to be them getting sacks, but
- 37:12Speaker 4: it needs them to be funneling towards Chase On and
- 37:15Speaker 4: Landry for pressure or getting pressure up the middle.
- 37:18Speaker 2: They they need to wreck the game.
- 37:21Speaker 3: Rights it's the term Belichick's use, game wrecker.
- 37:23Speaker 2: They need to wreck the game.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I will say chas On played better with the last
- 37:26Speaker 1: couple games, even going back to the to the Baltimore game.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought he kind of played a little bit
- 37:31Speaker 3: better down the stretch.
- 37:32Speaker 4: So and hopefully this rest will will do well for
- 37:34Speaker 4: Harold Landry. Hopefully he can come back and be fresher.
- 37:38Speaker 4: And that was the other thing that I wrote down.
- 37:39Speaker 4: You know, we'll find out at practice here later today.
- 37:42Speaker 4: But Splaine, Tonga Landry, are those guys out there or not?
- 37:47Speaker 4: And if they are out there, are they compromise or
- 37:50Speaker 4: are they able to play full tilt?
- 37:51Speaker 1: Like?
- 37:51Speaker 2: Where where are they at physically?
- 37:54Speaker 4: Is going to be big in this game because I
- 37:55Speaker 4: think the other thing that the Patriots absolutely have to
- 37:58Speaker 4: do in this game is they have to be able
- 38:00Speaker 4: to stop the run. Now, the Chargers don't run the
- 38:02Speaker 4: ball particularly well because of that offensive line. The offensive
- 38:06Speaker 4: line is thirty second in pass block win rate. They're
- 38:08Speaker 4: thirty first and run block win right, they think, you know,
- 38:11Speaker 4: so they don't run the ball particularly well. But the
- 38:14Speaker 4: Chargers will put a full back on the field with
- 38:16Speaker 4: Matt Locke. They will put extra offensive linemen on the
- 38:19Speaker 4: field if need be, and they might try to come
- 38:22Speaker 4: in here and play bully ball and do the Roman
- 38:24Speaker 4: John har Jim Harbach, excuse me, thing and just try
- 38:28Speaker 4: to bowl you over. And if they do that sort
- 38:31Speaker 4: of thing, you know, how do the Patriots match that personnel?
- 38:33Speaker 4: First of all, I think is an interesting conversation when
- 38:36Speaker 4: they do put twenty or twenty one personnel out on
- 38:39Speaker 4: the field and get heavy.
- 38:41Speaker 2: But also, if you.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Can stop the run turn it into a drop back
- 38:46Speaker 4: passing game, maybe you start to play with the lead
- 38:48Speaker 4: a little bit. And now all of a sudden, Herbert
- 38:51Speaker 4: is dropping back forty five fifty times, and that line
- 38:53Speaker 4: will not hold up, not against this pass rush, not
- 38:56Speaker 4: against any pass rush. So eventually, if you can get
- 39:00Speaker 4: Herbert to have to drop back and drop back and
- 39:03Speaker 4: drop back, I still think the Patriots have enough to
- 39:06Speaker 4: win upfront in that sort of game.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, to your it's a good point. They got
- 39:10Speaker 1: to stop the running, get a lead for that to happen.
- 39:12Speaker 4: So the Chargers I just mentioned offensively, you know a
- 39:15Speaker 4: little bit about Greg Roman, and then we'll get into
- 39:18Speaker 4: what I was about to say. Greg Roman was in
- 39:22Speaker 4: San Francisco with Jim, was in Baltimore with John and
- 39:26Speaker 4: both of those offenses ran around Lamar Jackson and Colin Kaepernick.
- 39:30Speaker 4: So those were I would call like option offenses like
- 39:33Speaker 4: they were college style option offenses. This offense doesn't do
- 39:38Speaker 4: it quite the same. They do feature some quarterback run,
- 39:42Speaker 4: but they don't do it a ton like they did
- 39:44Speaker 4: with Lamar and Kaepernick. But it's really weird to me
- 39:48Speaker 4: to watch this team play. They are twenty seventh in
- 39:52Speaker 4: the league in run rate. They don't run the ball
- 39:54Speaker 4: a lot, and they don't run it well, which is
- 39:56Speaker 4: like so backwards for Greg Roman and Jim Warre, like
- 40:00Speaker 4: that's not their typical mo. So when Rubber meets the road,
- 40:04Speaker 4: I still feel like they're going to try to put
- 40:06Speaker 4: you know, Matt Locke. Their full back is three hundred pounds.
- 40:08Speaker 4: He's basically an extra offensive lineman. He's played both sides
- 40:11Speaker 4: of the ball. He's a classic, you know, Harbaugh football
- 40:14Speaker 4: guy kind of player. And I still think that that's
- 40:18Speaker 4: where they're going to try to start this game. They
- 40:20Speaker 4: run a lot of twenty personnel, so no tight end
- 40:23Speaker 4: on the field, three wide receivers, the full back, the
- 40:25Speaker 4: running back.
- 40:26Speaker 3: That's advantage for the Patriots if they do that.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Yeah, well it hasn't been lately, but with Milton Williams back,
- 40:32Speaker 4: you hope so.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Well, I'm just thinking in terms of like damn being
- 40:34Speaker 3: able to cover tight ends.
- 40:35Speaker 4: Right, So Gatston their tight end who we talked about
- 40:38Speaker 4: a little bit in the draft.
- 40:40Speaker 1: He's a receivers. He's not a tight end.
- 40:42Speaker 4: He's a big wide receiver kind of not as good,
- 40:47Speaker 4: but like kind of like a Kyle Pitts or like
- 40:48Speaker 4: a you know, Mike is SICKI or someone like.
- 40:51Speaker 3: He's more of a peer receiver. He's two hundred and
- 40:52Speaker 3: fifteen pounds.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Yeah, no, he doesn't block, Like that's not his game.
- 40:55Speaker 4: So if he's on the field, you know, they do
- 40:57Speaker 4: have that eleven personnel package with it McConkie and Quinton
- 41:01Speaker 4: Johnston and uh usually Keenan Allen and Gaston, and that package.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Is really where they live. Like that's really their offense.
- 41:09Speaker 2: You know.
- 41:09Speaker 4: I know that historically Roman and Harbaugh are run first guys,
- 41:15Speaker 4: you know, load up with big people on the field.
- 41:18Speaker 1: But that's not so really good whatever, he's two hundred
- 41:20Speaker 1: and forty pounds. I thought that was wrong. I was
- 41:22Speaker 1: looking at his dad's with people, Oh cheers, Dad's bio.
- 41:25Speaker 1: I mean it's forty gats it. He doesn't block. It's
- 41:27Speaker 1: not but he doesn't block. You're right, he started his
- 41:30Speaker 1: career in college as why receive.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Yeah, any places? Yeah, and he's just not gonna block.
- 41:34Speaker 1: I was gonna say two fifteen looks wrong, but yeah,
- 41:36Speaker 1: so dad, it was one game I remember watching he
- 41:39Speaker 1: killed the Patriots, me was with the Dolphins.
- 41:41Speaker 4: So this is all a long way of saying that,
- 41:43Speaker 4: you know, this Charger team has the personnel to maybe
- 41:47Speaker 4: try to run the ball and get heavy on you
- 41:49Speaker 4: and do that whole type of thing, but it's really
- 41:51Speaker 4: not what they've done well this year. Right, what they've
- 41:53Speaker 4: done well this year is yolo ball with Justin Herbert
- 41:56Speaker 4: like that. That's where their offense has lived. They're really
- 41:59Speaker 4: good on third day. He's really good on third down,
- 42:02Speaker 4: and they stay on the field a lot. And that
- 42:03Speaker 4: was another thing that Vrabel pointed out on Monday. They're
- 42:07Speaker 4: second in the league in time of possession. So they
- 42:09Speaker 4: want to shrink the game. They want to choke you out.
- 42:12Speaker 4: They want the defense to hold you down on the scoreboard.
- 42:16Speaker 4: Justin Herbert is going to make just enough plays to
- 42:18Speaker 4: score just enough points to win, and they're gonna choke
- 42:21Speaker 4: you out offensively like that. That's the way that they
- 42:23Speaker 4: win football games. And you know, the Patriots I think
- 42:26Speaker 4: need to turn this game into more of a track meet,
- 42:29Speaker 4: Like they need to get this scoring up, They need
- 42:31Speaker 4: to get Herbert to drop back a bunch, and they
- 42:34Speaker 4: need to get this game into more of like that
- 42:37Speaker 4: sort of type of game. That doesn't mean the Patriots
- 42:38Speaker 4: can't run the ball and all that kind of stuff,
- 42:40Speaker 4: but you don't want to get into like a grind
- 42:44Speaker 4: it out rock fight with this team. That's how the
- 42:47Speaker 4: Chargers are going to stay in this game, is if
- 42:49Speaker 4: you do it that way.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you you, like, like I said before, you
- 42:54Speaker 1: want to put them in a situation where they have
- 42:55Speaker 1: to pass. You want to put them in a situation
- 42:57Speaker 1: where they become one dimensional.
- 42:58Speaker 4: Okay, Before we move over to the Patriots offense versus
- 43:02Speaker 4: the Chargers defense, the matchups here on the receivers I
- 43:06Speaker 4: think is interesting. Now, the Patriots don't do a ton
- 43:09Speaker 4: of traveling or shadowing with their corners anyway, so it
- 43:11Speaker 4: might this all might be a moot point or maybe
- 43:14Speaker 4: like over analyzing a little bit, because that might not matter.
- 43:18Speaker 4: But I do think that it's interesting because even though
- 43:21Speaker 4: the numbers might say I think Keenan Allen is there
- 43:24Speaker 4: technically their leading receiver. I think Keenan Allen's kind of washed.
- 43:27Speaker 4: Like watching them on film, he just doesn't move very well.
- 43:29Speaker 4: He's still got that like crafty, you know, YMCA thing
- 43:32Speaker 4: going on where he can kind of get open on
- 43:34Speaker 4: third down and things like that, but he's not explosive.
- 43:38Speaker 4: I think Johnston and McConkie are far more explosive.
- 43:42Speaker 2: But when you walk at these these.
- 43:43Speaker 3: Receivers, Johnston corners here a little bit.
- 43:46Speaker 4: A little bit, you know, he's still kind of a
- 43:48Speaker 4: one trick pony, but it's a good trick when you
- 43:50Speaker 4: look at these receivers. The rub is that McConkie is
- 43:54Speaker 4: a slot. You know, he plays sixty three percent of
- 43:57Speaker 4: his routes or run out of the slot. So you're
- 44:00Speaker 4: probably not going to put Gonzalez on Mcconkeey, No, it's
- 44:02Speaker 4: Mark Jones. So Marcus Jones gonna get McConkie. It's been
- 44:05Speaker 4: a great year for Marcus Johns. I'm not trying to
- 44:07Speaker 4: throw shade at Marcus Jones, but to me, I still
- 44:10Speaker 4: feel like this offense starts and ends with McConkey.
- 44:13Speaker 3: Am I crazy that I actually like that matchup for
- 44:15Speaker 3: the Patriots?
- 44:16Speaker 2: You're not crazy.
- 44:17Speaker 3: M conky's run so hot and cold this year.
- 44:20Speaker 2: He yes, yes, so when he's hot, he's dynamic.
- 44:24Speaker 3: Yeah. But Mark Jones a very consistent player.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 44:27Speaker 4: I just I look at this as an interesting matchup
- 44:30Speaker 4: from that standpoint. You know, it's not a traditional passing
- 44:34Speaker 4: game where the outside guys are really the volume guys.
- 44:37Speaker 4: It's really the volume guys are mconkie, Keenan Allen, Gadsden,
- 44:42Speaker 4: and Quentin Johnson is kind of their big play guy
- 44:44Speaker 4: on the outside, like sort of like.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Their Keishawn Boody.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Right, So you know, do you it's not a waste
- 44:50Speaker 4: to put Gonzales on Quentin Johnston because Johnson can't get
- 44:54Speaker 4: behind the defense and can separate down the field, So
- 44:57Speaker 4: it's it's an.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Important Johnston and or would you put him on Keenan Allen,
- 45:02Speaker 1: that's what you're saying.
- 45:03Speaker 4: No, I think I would probably stick with Gonzales on Johnston.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I would probably do that.
- 45:09Speaker 4: I'd probably put Marcus Jones is going to cover McConkie
- 45:11Speaker 4: in the slot. Maybe you give him some bracket or
- 45:14Speaker 4: you know, like robber help in the middle of the
- 45:16Speaker 4: field that allows him to kind of play leverage a
- 45:18Speaker 4: little bit better. And then I think that you kind
- 45:20Speaker 4: of live with Carlton Davis and Keenan Allen. Yeah, and
- 45:22Speaker 4: in a lot of ways, that might be the matchup
- 45:24Speaker 4: that kind of decides this game when the Chargers have
- 45:26Speaker 4: the ball is whoever covers Gatston on the tight end
- 45:30Speaker 4: and then you know, Carlton Davis versus Keenan Allen. And
- 45:33Speaker 4: the one thing I would say about Carlton Davis this year,
- 45:36Speaker 4: and it happened a couple times against Miami, when he
- 45:40Speaker 4: plays like those like fast, twitchy receivers, I do think
- 45:43Speaker 4: those guys give him problems. You know, some of the
- 45:46Speaker 4: fast Dolphins guys ToJ Washington especially, gave him some issues.
- 45:50Speaker 2: That's not Keenan Allen. Keenan Allen is.
- 45:52Speaker 4: Like old throwback, thrifty, like crafty receiver. I think that
- 45:58Speaker 4: Carlton Davis will be fine because he's not gonna get
- 46:00Speaker 4: run by by Keenan Alleny. So I don't mind that matchup.
- 46:04Speaker 4: The Gadsdon one's interesting. He's a good player. He's he's
- 46:07Speaker 4: a good receiving tight end. He can win down the seam,
- 46:11Speaker 4: he can win at the catch point. Do you trust
- 46:14Speaker 4: the safeties, you know, do you trust Woodson or Jalen
- 46:16Speaker 4: Hawkins or Mapu or like, how do you cover him?
- 46:20Speaker 2: They're they're not going to put the corner on the
- 46:22Speaker 2: tight end.
- 46:22Speaker 4: They're just like I'm giving up on thinking that they're
- 46:24Speaker 4: going to make that adjustment.
- 46:26Speaker 3: And this isn't necessarily a game where you would do
- 46:28Speaker 3: that any now.
- 46:29Speaker 4: No, So I think that within this matchup, whoever covers Gadsden,
- 46:34Speaker 4: whoever covers Keenan Allen, that's going to kind of decide
- 46:38Speaker 4: this game. To me, you know, it's like those kind
- 46:40Speaker 4: of chess matches there, but I think we're on the
- 46:42Speaker 4: same page in terms of how to distribute it. But
- 46:45Speaker 4: it's going to be decided there. All right, let's move
- 46:47Speaker 4: over to the defense. The Chargers defense. I think a
- 46:53Speaker 4: couple of things about the Chargers defense that stand out
- 46:56Speaker 4: to me. Really big, physical defensive line. They got five
- 47:00Speaker 4: guys that they go across a defensive line. Uh to
- 47:05Speaker 4: to a polo two is a right. Yeah, underrated player
- 47:10Speaker 4: needs to be talked about more.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Tart Jamari Calwell guy in the draft we talked a.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Little bit about from Oregon.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Uh Khalil Mack. Even though he's not the juicy, explosive
- 47:21Speaker 4: guy that he once was. He and he's physical and
- 47:25Speaker 4: he's strong as hell. So that uh, and then uh,
- 47:28Speaker 4: you know Oway, the guy that got from Baltimore, gives
- 47:31Speaker 4: him some twitch on the inside. He's got some pass
- 47:34Speaker 4: rush moves and he's long and all that kind of stuff.
- 47:36Speaker 4: So this defensive line, to me is is really physical.
- 47:41Speaker 4: They're really big, They're tough to move in the run game.
- 47:44Speaker 4: It's a good group. It's a group group up front
- 47:46Speaker 4: and two. Polo two is one of the more underrated
- 47:49Speaker 4: players in the league right now. He's six in the
- 47:52Speaker 4: league in sacks. He's got seventy pressures on the season. Uh,
- 47:55Speaker 4: he's a sneaky good player. So I look at that
- 47:58Speaker 4: and then the other thing that I look at from
- 48:01Speaker 4: this group, and then I want to get to the
- 48:03Speaker 4: real big picture stuff.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Derwin James.
- 48:06Speaker 4: You know, Derwin James is there, Kyle Hamilton, he's their
- 48:10Speaker 4: chess piece. He's playing in the box mostly this year,
- 48:14Speaker 4: but they've been really, really good against heavy personnel groupings,
- 48:17Speaker 4: whether it's twenty one or twelve, which the Patriots like
- 48:20Speaker 4: to play a lot of. Because Derwin's playing the nickel
- 48:23Speaker 4: and he's kind of this Swiss army knife player. So
- 48:25Speaker 4: when you look at the five guys across the defensive
- 48:28Speaker 4: line for the Chargers, and then you also look at
- 48:30Speaker 4: Derwin like, I think this is a tough group to
- 48:32Speaker 4: run on, Like, I don't really know, you we'll find
- 48:35Speaker 4: out if this run game is for real against his defense,
- 48:38Speaker 4: because it's those five up front and then it's the
- 48:41Speaker 4: sixth guy. Is Derwin playing to run in a physical
- 48:44Speaker 4: run player as well? So it's gonna be a challenge
- 48:47Speaker 4: to run the football in this game.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Tony Jefferson's not that too, their other safety, and
- 48:51Speaker 1: he can make plays at line scrimmage as well. So
- 48:54Speaker 1: it is they're big upfront, they're gonna try to bully you.
- 48:58Speaker 1: They can't try to bully you up front.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Yeah, oh absolutely.
- 49:00Speaker 4: I mean Mac and two Polo two are are power rushers,
- 49:04Speaker 4: like they are linear power rushers. They're good at it,
- 49:06Speaker 4: but they're not like these twitchy guys. And you know,
- 49:09Speaker 4: for Campbell, I think that that's some there's a positive
- 49:12Speaker 4: to that, and there's a you know, he had some
- 49:14Speaker 4: issues with with bull rushes against Bradley Chubb, but I
- 49:17Speaker 4: think I'd rather Campbell place a bull rusher than face
- 49:20Speaker 4: a guy that can really win with speed to the edge,
- 49:23Speaker 4: especially you know, with some of his deficiencies, I think
- 49:25Speaker 4: that that's probably the better matchup for Will Campbell. So
- 49:28Speaker 4: the one other thing I'd mentioned with twy polo two, uh,
- 49:31Speaker 4: they move him around a ton, so he doesn't just
- 49:33Speaker 4: play on one side of the line. He has about
- 49:36Speaker 4: an even split over the left and right tackle, and
- 49:38Speaker 4: he also rushes sometimes on the inside too, so they
- 49:41Speaker 4: kind of played him on all five spots. So with
- 49:44Speaker 4: a guy like that, it like half the battle is
- 49:46Speaker 4: just finding out where he is. It's not always going
- 49:50Speaker 4: to be here he's over the left tackle or he's
- 49:52Speaker 4: over the right tackle, which is often easier to you know,
- 49:56Speaker 4: scheme things up, you know, whether it's chips or whatever
- 49:58Speaker 4: the case may be. So that's them personnel wise, the
- 50:02Speaker 4: two guys personnel wise too, And then I want to
- 50:04Speaker 4: get to some of the scheme stuff that I would
- 50:08Speaker 4: expect the Patriots to go at. Is cam Hart, who's
- 50:11Speaker 4: the other corner for them. Dante Jackson's had a pretty
- 50:13Speaker 4: good year for them and still's there. Nichol is pretty
- 50:17Speaker 4: good too, but cam Hart, they're I think he's the
- 50:21Speaker 4: second year now, right, he was twenty four draft class.
- 50:25Speaker 2: He can he can be had and.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Molding their other safety, not Tony Jefferson, not Derwin James.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Yeah, they're kind of they're their other safety, so kind
- 50:33Speaker 1: of they're like secondary, secondary guys, right as I say,
- 50:37Speaker 1: Benjamin Saint Jus, the guy that that's played for them
- 50:39Speaker 1: this year that's had some issues.
- 50:40Speaker 4: Yeah, So just looking at the matchups here, you know,
- 50:44Speaker 4: this is one of those games where if Kaishawn Boodie
- 50:47Speaker 4: or Kyle Williams gets matched up on the outside against
- 50:51Speaker 4: Cam Hart or Saint Jus, like that's going to be the.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Matchup, right, you know, and that's gonna especially when they
- 50:56Speaker 2: have to.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Win, especially Kyle Williams, because those guys are more big,
- 50:59Speaker 1: physical corner.
- 51:00Speaker 3: He's a burner. He should be able to get by them.
- 51:01Speaker 4: Yeah, so I'm looking for you know, it doesn't have
- 51:05Speaker 4: to be a high volume, but can you hit one
- 51:06Speaker 4: or two bombs to Booty or Kyle Williams you know
- 51:10Speaker 4: on the backside of quarters here, which we'll talk about
- 51:12Speaker 4: in a second, you know, with one of those you know,
- 51:14Speaker 4: the second or third corner outside corner on them instead
- 51:18Speaker 4: of Dante Jackson. I think that that's an option as
- 51:21Speaker 4: well for the Patriots. So just talking a little bit
- 51:23Speaker 4: about the scheme defensively, and then we got to take
- 51:26Speaker 4: a break.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Yeah, the biggest thing with the scheme.
- 51:30Speaker 4: I can't say enough like positive things about Jesse Minter.
- 51:33Speaker 4: That guy's going to be a head coach in the NFL.
- 51:36Speaker 4: He does a really, really good job.
- 51:38Speaker 3: Are you advocating for defensive head coach.
- 51:40Speaker 4: Yeah, he does a great job. He does a great job. Now,
- 51:43Speaker 4: they they run a lot of quarters. They are quarters
- 51:46Speaker 4: based defense, so it's four guys up top, you know,
- 51:49Speaker 4: down at the deep part of the field.
- 51:51Speaker 2: But it has a lot of man to it.
- 51:54Speaker 4: Like so even though it kind of registers as zone
- 51:56Speaker 4: and like all of these advanced metrics and stuff like that,
- 52:00Speaker 4: it's kind of flexible. It's fluid right where sometimes they
- 52:04Speaker 4: match coverage down the field and they're matching verticals, which
- 52:08Speaker 4: is more the traditional way to do it. And then
- 52:10Speaker 4: sometimes they match it underneath and they have like the linebackers,
- 52:14Speaker 4: you'll match the backs and the tight ends underneath. So
- 52:16Speaker 4: there's a lot of man to man principles to this defense.
- 52:20Speaker 4: The one thing I will say though about the defense
- 52:22Speaker 4: is that Drake may has been excellent against zone all
- 52:26Speaker 4: year long. He has the highest EPA per dropback the
- 52:29Speaker 4: highest passer rating against zone coverage in the NFL, and
- 52:32Speaker 4: technically speaking, even though there has there's some fluidity to it.
- 52:36Speaker 4: The Chargers play zone on eighty one percent of their dropbacks.
- 52:39Speaker 4: They are a zone defense. They only play man to
- 52:42Speaker 4: man on first and second down nine percent of the time,
- 52:44Speaker 4: which is crazy low. Like that is, you know, one
- 52:47Speaker 4: of the lowest rates of man coverage on early downs
- 52:49Speaker 4: in the in the NFL. So first and second down
- 52:52Speaker 4: you're getting zoned. It's probably going to be quarters or
- 52:55Speaker 4: cover three. Drake May has destroyed both those zone coverages
- 52:58Speaker 4: all year long, so it's a strength on strength matchup.
- 53:01Speaker 4: They don't give up a lot of big plays. They
- 53:03Speaker 4: don't give up a lot in those zone coverages. Drake
- 53:06Speaker 4: May shred zone and only degenerates explosives against zone like
- 53:11Speaker 4: he just kills it. So who's gonna win out And
- 53:13Speaker 4: that situation is probably gonna ultimately all this other weed
- 53:17Speaker 4: stuff that we're talking about. I would say that is
- 53:20Speaker 4: probably the number one factor of what's going to decide
- 53:22Speaker 4: this football game. Can the Patriots pass rush beat the
- 53:25Speaker 4: Chargers offensive line, and can the Patriots beat the Chargers
- 53:29Speaker 4: in zone?
- 53:30Speaker 1: I'll just add to that like, and you talked a
- 53:31Speaker 1: little earlier about how much they'll spin the dial. The
- 53:35Speaker 1: Chargers force a lot of turnovers and Drake may has
- 53:38Speaker 1: been a lot better about limiting those turnovers this year,
- 53:41Speaker 1: but this is going to be another test. So keeping
- 53:44Speaker 1: that turnover down. And the Chargers turn the ball over too.
- 53:46Speaker 1: They're like middle of the pack in terms of turnover margin,
- 53:49Speaker 1: but it's because they force turnovers a lot and they
- 53:51Speaker 1: turn the ball over a lot. Yeah, so you know,
- 53:53Speaker 1: the Patriots, if you can hold onto the football, the
- 53:55Speaker 1: Chargers will give you a couple and that could be
- 53:57Speaker 1: a big swing.
- 53:57Speaker 4: So I have one point about that, and before you
- 54:00Speaker 4: head to break, but really quickly, one more thing about
- 54:02Speaker 4: the defense for the Chargers. I don't think they give
- 54:06Speaker 4: up a ton of explosive plays in volume, but over
- 54:09Speaker 4: the last couple of weeks they have given up some
- 54:11Speaker 4: x plays in the passing game. Houston hit two long
- 54:13Speaker 4: touchdowns against them in that game, a seventy five yarder
- 54:17Speaker 4: and I think Jalen Knowles was like forty forty five yards.
- 54:20Speaker 4: The week before that, George Pickens got behind him for
- 54:23Speaker 4: a big touchdown against Dallas. I remember earlier on in
- 54:27Speaker 4: the season when Mena Comas was making the rounds because.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Of the quarters thing like do you where.
- 54:32Speaker 1: You can't forget can't what was it? You can't throw verticals?
- 54:35Speaker 2: Yes? Quarters, Yeah, you could absolutely throw over the top
- 54:37Speaker 2: of quarters.
- 54:38Speaker 4: And in all these instances that I just brought up,
- 54:41Speaker 4: whether it was Noel Higgins Pickens, it was all quarterbacks
- 54:46Speaker 4: throwing over the top of quarters. What does Drake may
- 54:49Speaker 4: love to do? He loves to throw the deep ball.
- 54:52Speaker 4: If they get these quarters coverages, they can get one
- 54:55Speaker 4: on one matchups on the outside against quarters. And I
- 54:58Speaker 4: fully expect Drake made a bomb away when he sees that.
- 55:00Speaker 4: So I do think that statistically the Chargers are eighth
- 55:05Speaker 4: in the league, eighth best in terms of giving up
- 55:07Speaker 4: explosive pass plays. But I think that they've given up
- 55:10Speaker 4: a few big ones over the last couple of weeks
- 55:13Speaker 4: and schemes and things like that that Josh McDaniels is
- 55:16Speaker 4: going to see on film and it's going to say,
- 55:18Speaker 4: we can replicate that. You know, we can get Kaysehawan
- 55:21Speaker 4: Boody on the backside, you know, vertical, or we can
- 55:24Speaker 4: hit the big post on quarters, or we can do this,
- 55:27Speaker 4: you know, the different things that the Texans and the
- 55:29Speaker 4: Cowboys were able to do against this defense. So I
- 55:33Speaker 4: do think there is a formula there for the Patriots
- 55:35Speaker 4: to have a lot of success in the passing game
- 55:37Speaker 4: against his charger zone. But I also think that there's
- 55:40Speaker 4: a world where the chargers zones kind of throw them
- 55:43Speaker 4: off a little bit because it's unique, it's a different
- 55:45Speaker 4: kind of scheme. So whoever wins out in that matchup
- 55:48Speaker 4: is going to be fascinating to watch. So that's oh
- 55:52Speaker 4: last thing you mentioned about the turnovers. Yeah, pre and
- 55:56Speaker 4: post broken hand. For Justin Herbert first thirteen games of
- 56:01Speaker 4: the season or twelve games of the season pre hand injury,
- 56:04Speaker 4: he only had two fumbles the entire first you know,
- 56:08Speaker 4: let's call it half of the season before he broke
- 56:10Speaker 4: his hand, his non throwing hand, and they both happened
- 56:13Speaker 4: in the same game. Since he broke his hand, he's
- 56:16Speaker 4: fumbled five times.
- 56:18Speaker 3: So and member's gonna be cold and it might be wet.
- 56:21Speaker 4: He only has one hand on the ball right like,
- 56:23Speaker 4: he can't put the other hand on the ball. The
- 56:25Speaker 4: other hands in this like big cast thing. It's great,
- 56:28Speaker 4: kind of like crazy. It's almost like watching Gronk with
- 56:30Speaker 4: the bionic arm like play out there. Yeah, so he can't.
- 56:34Speaker 4: He can't grip the ball with his left hand. So
- 56:37Speaker 4: if you're a pass rusher, if he's running with the football,
- 56:40Speaker 4: which he does at a really high level, he's second
- 56:42Speaker 4: in the league in the rushing yards by quarterbacks. It's
- 56:45Speaker 4: alan Herbert may in terms of rushing yards by quarterbacks.
- 56:50Speaker 4: Punching at the ball, Man, punch the ball, pry it out,
- 56:54Speaker 4: rip it out, do what you gotta do. U. But
- 56:57Speaker 4: this is like a gang tackle Herbert kind of game,
- 57:00Speaker 4: where like one guy goes for the tackle and one
- 57:02Speaker 4: guy should be going for the ball at all times
- 57:05Speaker 4: because that hand is not healthy and he can't put
- 57:07Speaker 4: two hands on the football. So if you look at
- 57:09Speaker 4: his fumble splits, I's gotten lucky in terms of fumble luck.
- 57:13Speaker 4: He hasn't lost a bunch of fumbles, but he has
- 57:16Speaker 4: put the ball on the ground.
- 57:17Speaker 3: Well, that's still you're losing yards. You're moving backwards like.
- 57:20Speaker 4: You hope the ball bounces your way once and you
- 57:23Speaker 4: make a game change in play that way.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Current forecast thirty five degrees at kickoff. Not wet, though
- 57:28Speaker 1: it's supposed to rain a little bit in the morning,
- 57:30Speaker 1: but should be done like twelve hours before the game,
- 57:32Speaker 1: all right, as of right now, these things change, all right.
- 57:34Speaker 2: So that's your Chargers preview.
- 57:37Speaker 4: We can still talk about the Chargers plenty here in
- 57:39Speaker 4: the second hour of the show. I just wanted to
- 57:41Speaker 4: get all that out in terms of setting the table
- 57:43Speaker 4: on the Chargers.
- 57:45Speaker 2: We're going to take a quick break.
- 57:46Speaker 4: We'll be right back after the break, and we'll continue

- 1:00:02Speaker 4: hour at catch twenty two. So I was walking through
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: quish story times. I was walking through the tunnel yesterday
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: and I'm just gonna call them Boyd's dad.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: Boyd's dad stopped me and said, nice boots because.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: I was wearing my bront work boots, which I've been
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: wearing all the time now now that it's winter and
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: there's snow and ice and sleeping on there. So I'm

- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and I feel like the.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: Black pair would match pretty well with the khakis. Sure,
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: So I'm like wondering if maybe by talking about them

- 1:00:44Speaker 4: get a solid here?
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: I got to coordinate that top though, too, man, don't.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: Yeah, right about the pants.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm just asking, you know, I'm not I'm not
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: expecting anything. I'm not, you know, trying to be too
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: greedy here. I really appreciate the stuff they've already sent us,
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: but those black ones look nice.

- 1:01:27Speaker 4: A T S. All right, let's take some of these
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: calls and emails. I know you guys have been waiting,
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: and we'll talk a little bit of charges. I also
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: want to talk a little bit about the coaching cycle,
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: because I have some takes on that that I find
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: this stuff fascinating.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Do you find like I don't know if you do, but.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: Like this, like John Harbaugh thing, what's going on in Washington.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: I find all that stuff super see, like the MVP thing.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: I've already non litigated.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: The MVP thing so much that I'm over it.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: I've discovered something.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: Okay, all right, let's first. I'm sure there'd be some
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: MVP talk. Patty is a nag on what's up? Patty?
- 1:02:06Speaker 9: Hey, what's up? Gentlemen?
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: How you doing good?
- 1:02:09Speaker 9: I'll got a few things to go over, so I'll
- 1:02:11Speaker 9: make them quick. First off, I apologize for kind of
- 1:02:14Speaker 9: the bijan control job last week. That was kind of
- 1:02:17Speaker 9: a little bit of a troll job. I know it
- 1:02:19Speaker 9: would never really realistically happen, but Alex, I gotta I
- 1:02:24Speaker 9: gotta tell you, buddy, I'm with you on the game
- 1:02:29Speaker 9: used to be perfect when it was sixteen games, twelve
- 1:02:32Speaker 9: playoff teams and sudden death overtime. And I just wish
- 1:02:38Speaker 9: it would go back to that because it was perfect.
- 1:02:40Speaker 9: It was a perfect formula.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: And and I believe they're going to go to eighteen
- 1:02:44Speaker 9: games of probably eight playoff teams and the and the
- 1:02:47Speaker 9: pool is going to be diluted. But whatever, let's just
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: let's enjoy this run while we're at it. On the game.
- 1:02:54Speaker 9: I feel like Evan, like you said I would, I
- 1:02:56Speaker 9: would be a little bit disappointed if they don't win.
- 1:02:59Speaker 9: I'm kind of expecting them to win. And if they
- 1:03:02Speaker 9: win this one game, I'm good. Like we're playing with
- 1:03:05Speaker 9: house money after that, mostly because Justin Herbert kind of
- 1:03:10Speaker 9: turns into a puddle of big games. And if you
- 1:03:13Speaker 9: guys remember kind of his big not coming out of
- 1:03:16Speaker 9: college out of Oregon was he had like everything, like
- 1:03:20Speaker 9: you know, he's like the perfect perfect job, athletic profile
- 1:03:25Speaker 9: to play quarterback, but he has kind of like a
- 1:03:28Speaker 9: care free attitude. That's what I That's what I remember
- 1:03:30Speaker 9: hearing about him. And if you go through like the
- 1:03:33Speaker 9: last four big games that he's played, including last year's
- 1:03:37Speaker 9: playoff which was glaring or he threw three picks all
- 1:03:39Speaker 9: year and through four interceptions in the playoffs, you know,
- 1:03:44Speaker 9: I'm just expecting them to win. And the question that
- 1:03:49Speaker 9: I'm going to end with is I'm always looking forward
- 1:03:51Speaker 9: to the next season. This I think is realistic. Who
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: would say no to this? Give up our first for
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: Max because who are going to find in the draft?
- 1:04:02Speaker 9: But in the Max Crosby and Alex do you have
- 1:04:05Speaker 9: any thoughts on Skuyler Bell wide receiver out of Yukon.
- 1:04:08Speaker 9: I'll kick it off there, guys. Let's go always playoff time, baby.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Thanks for the call, Patty.
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: Uh yeah, I I'm all in on the Max Crosby thing.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: We talked about this. We were texting about it the
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: last week.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: I it seems like it makes all the sense in
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: the world. They're they're gonna be in a position and
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: I know we're talking about a playoff game on Sunday,
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: we're already talking about the off season.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: But that's what the shadows.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: So many off season questions in my mail back this week,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I was like, oh, it's playoffs, people will find it.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Nope, and we've said this is an offseason show.
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: But I think that the big reason why is because
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: we all can kind of feel that they're close, but
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: they're probably not fully there yet, which is totally valid
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: given that they're only one year into this thing. Max
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: Crosby is a type of move that they've now set
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: themselves up to make though they are they are one
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: or two pieces away. Now, we didn't think that at
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: the beginning of the season when like Mike Parsons was available,
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: for example, But now I'm going to definitely think that
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: going into next offseason, and if you look at their
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: biggest needs, I still think that they need another playmaker offensively.
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: They're gonna need to keep drafting lineman offensively offensive line,
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: but pass.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Rusher on the edge is number one. I think he's
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: a hell of a pass rusher. They're depending on what
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: happens with Diggs and mac Hollins and their contracts. Yeah,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: and more than Moses their three biggest needs. And that's
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: not they don't have needs on offense. Their three biggest
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: needs may all be on defense.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: Yeah, So you know you.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Trade for Max Crosby, that that really gets you going.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: That checks the box emphatically.
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: He's just such a Rable guy. Like Rable's number one,
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: not negotiables, effort, and finish. There is nobody that plays
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: with a hotter motor than.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Maxican and especially I think a guy coming from an
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: organization that's just been bad and clearly wants a chance
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: to win and is going to have a chance to
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: do that here. Yeah, I love the idea. You know,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: if I can take it a step further. I think
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: we talked about this the other day. We were going
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: through like weird snares of the offseason. Let's say the
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Ravens are just totally starting over, right, if I don't think,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe this is.
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: A bit much would the race.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: If you don't want to trade the first Let's say, like,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: let's say the Ravens totally start over, right, Lamar Jackson
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: becomes available. If you're the Ravens, you maybe don't want
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: to trade the first overall pick. If you trade Max
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: Crosby for a first or a package, well, now you
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: have another pick you can use to flip for Lamar
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: and really get the rebuild started. We're talking about the Raiders,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: the Raiders basically the Raiders in the in the Ravens
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: trading Lamar for Max Crosby with the paid well, no,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: do the Patriots facilitate it? So the Patriots give the
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Raiders extra AMMO and trade for Lamar Jacks without having
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: to trade the first overall pick or maybe the Ravens
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Raiders then trade down to four and keep because I hear,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: do you get what I'm saying? Like, you don't want
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: to give the number one on Mar Jackson's worth a lot,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: but you need more around him, and giving up that
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: asset for him, you're not gonna be able to put
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: around what you need, right, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: I don't know if the Ravens would do that either.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: It's just I've kind of been going through these things
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: in my head.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: Yeah, so I I I'm all in on Crosby. I mean, uh,
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: you know, I'd probably rather be Chase on but he's
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: gonna be a free agent. And they actually played together
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: in Vegas, and that's right. Jason had a pretty good
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: year rushing opposite at Crosby. But you go into next
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: year even you know, just thinking out loud, like with
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: Landry Barmore, Williams and Crosby as your front four, that
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: that is a hell of a group up front. It's
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: gonna cost you picks, it's gonna cost you money. But
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: that's a type of like let's put this thing over
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: the top type right. All right, that's enough on the
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: off season during you know, five days before a playoff game.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: But I'm sure it was fun.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: Danny's in Daytona.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: What's up Danny the Baits? What's up Danny? Danny? All right,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: call back Danny and we'll get you on. Sean is
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: in Vancouver or what's up Sean I'm wondering about coverage.
- 1:08:15Speaker 8: I mean, yeah, we were saying, you know, the different
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: man coverages that we have for everybody, but let's say
- 1:08:20Speaker 8: you could buy in it and you have sometimes Davis
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: on Keenan Allen like you said, and Gonzo on Johnson,
- 1:08:30Speaker 8: do you think they could have some zone underneath with that,
- 1:08:34Speaker 8: like just suppress of the defensive plane zone And I'll
- 1:08:37Speaker 8: leave you with that.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Go back, Thanks Sean so who said Davis on.
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: Who I couldn't hear his phone was kind of in
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: and out.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: Okay, I think so this is another kind of big
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: picture of conversation, which is why I think he's asking.
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: But there's a lot of like stuff going on on
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: the film, Twitter and things like that right now about
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: corners traveling with specific receivers, and we're starting to see
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: more and more across the league. Uh that fade away
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: and go away more and more.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: Which is a shame. I think everyone. Trent Brown had
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: the idea of tackles traveling with pass rush.
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: Yeah, so the days of like you know, Darrell Reeves
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: taking Randy Moss for the entire game.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: Stefan Gilmour used to do it a lot.
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: Of the meetings.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: See you, Uh that that kind of thing is starting
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: to fade away. And I think that the coaching Twitter community,
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: like the high school and college coaches that are on
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: Twitter that I appreciate a lot, explain a lot of
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: things about the game to people like us trying to learn. Uh,
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: the the biggest thing that they kind of come back
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: with are kind of twofold one. It might simplify things
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: for that one player in the defense, but it actually
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: complicates everything else because now you have guys that maybe
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: you are playing at a position like for example, just you know,
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: this is kind of simplified, but if Christian Gonzalez travels
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: inside with lad Maconki.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Right, where does Marcus Jones go? Right now?
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: Marcus Jones might have to play on the outside against
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: like a Quentin Johnson or Trey Harris, and you probably
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: don't like that matchup. And on top of that, he's
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: not comfortable playing out there, So there's like a trickle
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: dat effect from that standpoint as well. Uh, And then
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: you know, you kind of get into this whole thing
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: of like it's good for one person, but it's not
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: good for the other tensions.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: So that's why, like and not that many teams do
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: this because you have to have insane talent to do this. Yeah,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: having all your corners follow guys, which the Patriots did
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: at one point, Like, that's I think this Patriots, he
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: might have the personnel for it.
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: Most he's like the Revus Browner Patriots, where Browner would
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: take the bigger guy and revis would.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Take the number one. Right that that sort of thing.
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: The other element to it, in terms of like why
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: teams aren't traveling as much is disguise, and disguise has
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: become one of the most we're in things in defensive
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: football because these quarterbacks and these offenses systematically are just
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: too good at undressing defense. If you don't hide your
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: cards defensively, if you just kind of sit in the
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: same pre snap look as you sit in post snap, like,
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: these quarterbacks are going to figure it out too quickly
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: and you're gonna get shredded. So if you travel Gonzalez
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: into the slot, then you have two options. Either Gonzales
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: either you're declaring you're playing man and you're just tipping
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: your hand that you're playing man to man. Or the
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: other thing that you could do is you have to
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: teach Gonzalez how to play the slot. Right, So now
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: he's got to be able to do all the things
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: in the zone and the runfit that Marcus Jones does.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Playing the full time nickel role. Now you have to.
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: Train your other corners that usually play on the outside
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: to play inside. So a lot of teams are just
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: kind of getting to the point now.
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: Where it's just not worth it.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: It's just not worth the trouble to have guys shot,
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: and I know that that drives fans crazy, especially when
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: you have a great cover corner like Christian Gonzales that
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: should be able to do that. But that's just the
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: reality of it. That's what they do. So it'll be
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: interesting to see if that continues for the Patriots moving forward.
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: I don't think this is the game where you have
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: Gonzales shadow a specific receiver. I think they spread the
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: ball around pretty good and they have like different kinds
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: of elements that aren't necessarily It's not like you're going
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: up against like the Bengals and Jamar Chase where he's
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: just going to follow Jamar Chase around the field, so
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: it's a little bit different. I don't really know if
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: they have a matchup in this playoff field, in this
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: tournament that screams doing that. Like maybe if you get
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: to the super Bowl and you play you know, Seattle
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: or the Rams or something like that, and it's Pukah
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: or it's JSN. But in the AFC, I mean, you're
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: probably going to go most likely, you're probably going to
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: go what like Chargers, Jaguars, Broncos or something like that.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: And how much do you respect Brian Thomas Junior.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Who has not had a good year. No, he's Myers
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: is really yeah?
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: You're right too. Uh oh, DK Metcalf.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: That would well down the road and you'd have to
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: get some weird results for that to happen.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: But they could be the it could be uh actually.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: No, that's not true. Oh no, if all the favorites win, No.
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: If if the sixth seed, if if Buffalo wins, then
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: the Patriots to play the winner of four five.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: You're right, Actually, it's not that ridiculous. So DK Metcalf,
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: K Metcalf.
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: If Nico Collins is healthy and playing, I don't know.
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: So weird things going on with Nico Collins in Houston.
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: He was like a healthy scratch last week. I think
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: they were just resting him, but who knows. Uh, So
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: it's an interesting conversation that's probably not meant for a
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: a playoff show like this one. But the corner is
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: traveling and all that kind of stuff has been a
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: popular topic on a you know on my feed, which
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: is a bunch of nerds that talk about football all
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: the time.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: A couple of emails. I want to take some emails.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: Let's do it.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: So Danny asking a Chargers defense question, uh, with Evans
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: saying the Chargers are running Uh, I'm gonna call it quarters. Danny, Like,
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: cover four to me is different from quarters. That's another
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: submitting difference. So cover four spot drop right, like you're
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: just dropping into into four deep zone four deep three
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: underneath quarters has got like match principles right where guys
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: are matching like verticals or matching underneath routs like I
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: was talking about earlier. So I think, like the the
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: traditional cover four is dead. Like you don't really see
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: a lot of teams just running pure spot drop cover
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: four anymore. Everybody is pretty much running match quarters, which
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: is like the new thing in the league. Fangio kind
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: of started it, I would say, like he's probably credited
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: the most was starting it. But it's kind of funny,
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: like the Texans, the this Chargers defense, and what was
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: Jacksonville are all play playing this kind of defense. Now,
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: they're all playing a ton of match quarters or quarter
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: quarter half, which is covers it.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: That's good news for the Patriots because who is it
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: sit again the Chargers, the Texans, and the Jaguars.
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: Yes, that could be their path. Yeah, those three teams
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: are playing back to the Super Bowl. Denver plays a
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: ton of man. They still play a ton of man
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: with Stingley. But all these teams are running all this
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: quarters coverage and it's like the thing to do defensively now, uh,
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: to limit the explosive plays. So anyway, sorry, Danny, that's
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: the semantics thing.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: Evan is saying. The Chargers run a lot of quarters
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: most of the time.
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: What is the second and most their second and third
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: most frequent coverage that they run.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Is there any chance they completely switch from quarters? It's
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: a good question.
- 1:15:42Speaker 9: Uh.
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: This is probably something that you know is going to
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: also be the game within the game. Like if the
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: Patriots come out opening drive first couple drives, McDaniels is
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: in his bag with the quarters beaters and Drake may
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: just is shredding their quarters defenses. They play cover three
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: a ton now next Gen says it's cover three. Quarters
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: can kind of look like cover three sometimes to the
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: AI bot, so like it's kind of it depends on
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: you know what down you're really talking about. But they
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: play a lot of Cover three, and they play a
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: lot of Cover two as like sort of their change
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: ups to quarters. So they'll play some Tampa two with
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: the pull runner in the middle of the field, and
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: they'll play some three buzz where you know, they start
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: in too high safety and then they rotate one of
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: the safeties down into the short zone and then they
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: create Cover three.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: Out of that.
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: So could they pivot to that? Absolutely, maybe more Tampa.
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: I don't think I would pivot to cover three against
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: Drake May. I think that's a death sentence. But I
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: could see them pivoting to more two or two man
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: as sort of a compliment to the quarter stuff. But
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: to me, like, if you're gonna play too high safety anyways,
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: like it's not it's kind of the same thing, like
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: if you're gonna play quarters, or if you're gonna play
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: two man, there's cover two. It's really kind of the
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: same thing. There's another question here. Let me see if
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: I can find the exact email that I meant to
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: hit on earlier and I forgot when we were talking
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: about the run game? Is Ben Brown? This is from
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: David Maine. Is Ben Brown a better guard than Jared
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: Wilson for the run game? Seems like every time he's playing,
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: the running backs have a quote unquote breakout game. So
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: the Ben Brown Jared Wilson conversation I think is really
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: really fascinating. There's no doubt that Will Campbell is healthy
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: and Will Campbell is playing like that's not a question
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: In terms of left tackle, I do think left guard
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: is a conversation.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: The one thing I would.
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: Say for Ben Brown he's just bigger, Like he's just
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: a little bit bigger.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: I don't think Ben.
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: Brown is really like a maler either. I don't really
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: think that's necessarily his game. But he's bigger. He's wider
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: than Jared Wilson. He takes up more space than Jared Wilson.
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: And when you play Ben Brown next to Campbell and
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: Campbell is you know, as we know is a little built,
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: a little bit more narrower and a little bit more
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: linear of a.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: Of a frame.
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: It just gives them a little bit more size and
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: sort of like mass on that side of the offensive line.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: I think I could make a.
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: Really compelling case for them sticking with Ben Brown and
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: Jared Wilson will have his turn. He's probably gonna be
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: the starting center of the future for this team.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: He's earned that.
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: He's definitely earned a starting job going into next year.
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: But I kind of feel like maybe they're better off
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: with Ben Brown right now at left guard.
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, you roll with the hot hand going
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: to the playoffs. It's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: I also just don't love the idea of like continuing
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: to flip back and forth right, like, just just pick
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: a line.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: This is winner, go home.
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: So I don't start Jared Wilson in this game and
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: then pull them or vite you know what I mean, Like,
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: you just gotta pick a lane and stay in that lane.
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: And I think right now, Ben Brown Brad Berry on
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: when who has been really rock solid in the middle
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: for the most part. Ben Brown was a little shaky
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: against the Jets for some reason. I don't know what
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: was going on with him in the beginning of that Jets,
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: but it was a little weird for him there. All right,
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: Danny's back, Let's get to Danny. Danny's in Daytona. What's up, Danny?
- 1:19:10Speaker 10: Hey, can you guys hear me?
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: Yeah? We got you now, all right?
- 1:19:13Speaker 10: I appreciate you. Sorry, brother, Yeah, And I tried to
- 1:19:15Speaker 10: call him last few weeks. I've been having a question
- 1:19:17Speaker 10: for you and Alex. So I want to start off
- 1:19:21Speaker 10: first with three takes to help. This is off season talk,
- 1:19:26Speaker 10: but it will kind of help the Patriots, you know,
- 1:19:29Speaker 10: fast track building on the sys of this current season.
- 1:19:32Speaker 10: So the first player, I don't know if you've heard
- 1:19:33Speaker 10: of this guy, Romel Romeo height. He's a linebacker, yeah,
- 1:19:41Speaker 10: he said he's he's an older guy. He's coming into
- 1:19:45Speaker 10: I think he's like age twenty five, so he's a
- 1:19:47Speaker 10: little older, but he has experience. They said he'd be
- 1:19:51Speaker 10: not a huge project, but with the right coaching staff,
- 1:19:54Speaker 10: they'll get him up the speeds to play fast. He's
- 1:19:58Speaker 10: you know, very physical, he has trace. He just needs
- 1:20:01Speaker 10: a good position coach, which I believe we have in
- 1:20:03Speaker 10: the building to work with him and Mike Rabel and
- 1:20:06Speaker 10: you know, the heat. They said that they can see
- 1:20:08Speaker 10: him mock drafts, see him project to be a really
- 1:20:12Speaker 10: good linebacker. The other one who the most mocked people
- 1:20:16Speaker 10: think that the Patriots will take is Max. He's a
- 1:20:19Speaker 10: Nigerian offensive tackle Arizona State. He's really good, very tall,
- 1:20:25Speaker 10: very big, very athletic. They said he needs to work
- 1:20:28Speaker 10: a little bit more on his pass blocking, but he's
- 1:20:31Speaker 10: very dominant run blocker. And then the other player that
- 1:20:36Speaker 10: they have is another eighteen point five stacked artist from Oregon.
- 1:20:44Speaker 10: I don't know if you heard him. I got his
- 1:20:46Speaker 10: name here. Mock drafts have him going coming out of
- 1:20:49Speaker 10: His name is Matteo. Yeah, yeah, I can't. Yeah, he's
- 1:20:54Speaker 10: really I want to see your guys take on that.
- 1:20:57Speaker 10: And then the last thing, what do you guys think
- 1:20:59Speaker 10: about I hear this talk of Thomas Brown leaving the
- 1:21:03Speaker 10: Patriots to possibly interview with the Arizona Cardinals, and who
- 1:21:08Speaker 10: do you think they should replace if Thomas Brown does departure?
- 1:21:12Speaker 10: And do you also think that Arizona is using Thomas
- 1:21:15Speaker 10: Brown as a Rooney rule checkoff or do you think
- 1:21:19Speaker 10: he will actually be.
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: Hired Thanks to the call, Danny appreciate it. A lot
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: of good stuff there. I'm pretty familiar with the Oregon
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: player just from watching the playoffs.
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: So yeah, it's DJ's brother. He's been really good for them. Obviously,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: Oregon has a ton of success with players in front.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: We'll talk a lot about him. Yeah, Romelo Height, you're.
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: Big on this.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: When everybody's watching the star player, Yeah, it's the guy
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: on the other side.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: The team's like, wait, who's this guy? So David Bailey, who.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Is objectively Texas tech right, a perfect Patriots fit, and
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: we were high on earlier this season and the Patriots
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: like three and two.
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: Yeah, they're not getting David Bailey. He's gonna be top
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: ten pick.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: Ramelo Heights on the other side and kind of similar
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: player that kind of same guys on both sides. He
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: is also late first, early second. Him and Ui Young
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: the same range. Both good names to know.
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: I think Romel Height little more speed player, we underlay
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: a little more power player.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: But I mean they both make sense. As for the
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: tackle from Arizona State, I know a little about him.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: I just know he's super raw. So you're talking about
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: a project player probably day three. He has a right tackle,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: which they need, but I'm yeah, beyond that, I they
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: they could probably use a project tackle, but I don't
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: know that it specifically has to be him.
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: He's you know, I usually have the big guys.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: He's huge, but like I don't nothing stands out outside
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: of his size.
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: So uh, I do think they're in the tackle market. Obviously,
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: they're in the past rushing market.
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: We know that.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: I do think they're in the tackle market.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: You know, Morgan Moses at thirty four, he's been fantastic
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: and I would definitely bring him back.
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: Uh, and I get the next guy in the build.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: Yeah, get the next guy in the building. Maybe he
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: mentors him a little bit for the Patriots.
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: The one guy that I know, you know, off the
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: top of my head in terms of that, the Samoan
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: kid from Miami.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: Uh Milaga. Yeah, so he's be like a top they're not.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: Kidding him, Okay, so he's gonna go too high.
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: He's Yeah, he's might be the first tackle.
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: So I think that that guy is he's awesome, really
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: freaking good. Now, some people kind of view him as
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: like would be a pretty good right tackle, but might
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: be like an all pro guard, you know, it's that
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: sort of thing again.
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: Uh, but I would they're all better guards and town.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's a is a stud.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: So if you there's to go back to the other thing,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: like who's the guy on the other side. Right, Utah
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: has two tackles who both can probably play. I'm trying
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: to remember which is which. I keep getting them mixed up.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: No, their right tackles, the guy at the top, never
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: mind both their tackles is a good one in the
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: first round.
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: Yeah, So I don't know if you're using another first
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: round pick on a tackle I'm not against probably, you
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: know me, I'm always with the offensive line, so I
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: don't think that that's where they start.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: There could be one scenario. I've talked to you a
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: little bit about this guy, Jennings Dunker from Iowa.
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: Yeah, is a plays right tackle. He's probably with the mullet. Mullet.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: He is one of you talk about a guy that
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: plays nasty and mean and physical and it's just kind
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: of an a hole on the field.
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: Yeah, he is.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: They need a little bit of that.
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: So he's probably a guard lawn a guard long term.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: But does he play left guard?
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: Well, so he plays tackle, so we don't know.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: But like he's somebody that guy, so the left guard,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: the pipeline's right there for him to go to left guard.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: He's more so a guy that might he he has
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: the resume to me and this is early the subject
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: to change, Like maybe you'd give a look at tackle
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: before you movement. Ultimately movements, right, I think like Kane Wallace, right.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: Yeah, but I feel like he I've seen a little
- 1:24:42Speaker 4: bit of him because he can't like everybody talks about
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: the mullet guy so like it's.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: Like it's all over.
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: It's always just a clips of him beated a crap
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: out of people.
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: The way he finishes blocks and the nastiness that he
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: plays with I think is exactly they need a little
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: infusion in that on the offensive line.
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: There.
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: They're offensive line right now as a tad bit fine
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: for my liking, as much as the group has improved significantly,
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: and I actually have a piece coming about that. But
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: they they could use a mall er, they could use
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: a nail bier.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: So you're probably you're probably taken him in the first round. Dunker,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: I don't know if you want to take guard in
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: the first round. I'll give you more more names while
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: we're on it. For people watching college football playoff Manual
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: pregnant known, I don't know exactly what you pronounced.
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: He's Organ's left guard. He's a whole bunch of mean
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: He's a whole bunch of mean and nash.
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: He's supposed to be a second round pick. You have
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: to trade up in the second round to get him.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: But plug and play starting left guard.
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: I love the Patriots offensive line. I've had a lot
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: of fun covering that group, and they're a lot of
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: fun and super nice guys. Will Campbell's got a little
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: bit of a mean streak, Yeah, he definitely has that.
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: But they could use an a hole in that room.
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: They could use a logan makings. Like I'm not talking
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: about the talent, obviously, any team could use a logan
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: makings in terms of the talent, I'm talking about the
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: mentality right right, and that sort of thing. They could
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: use someone like that, you know, Bradburry, Moses on Wenu.
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: Super nice guys, good football players really, you know, impressive
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: please with their seasons all that, But they could use
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: a guy that could, you know, bite some kneecaps, you know,
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: So we'll see what happens there. Speaking of biting kneecaps,
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: color I also mentioned some of the coaching changes around
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: the league. I wanted to talk about that a little
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: bit here before we get back to the calls and stuff.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: A couple of things on that.
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: The John Harbaugh situation I find fascinating. Yes, they the
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: reporting as of right now, there's six openings, right if
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: I'm not mistaken, seven six or seven.
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: Seven including Nice, seven including the Ravens. Yeah, because it
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: was reported last night. So there's seven teams are talking
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: to Horrball and there's seven openings.
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: So there's six openings because he's not going to go
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: back to Baltimore. There's six openings, and like there's some
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: reporting at at seven, there's some reporting that there's nine teams,
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: Like there's more teams that have called about John Harbaugh
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: than have coaching openings. So John Harbaugh, as expected as
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: everybody would.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: Expect, is good.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: His time ran out in Baltimore, and maybe the message
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: got sound real quick. According to Josina Anderson, this is
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: within the last hour. One of those teams is the Dolphins.
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: Okay, so they he's going to have a huge market.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: He's a great coach. Uh So naturally he's going to
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: have a huge market.
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: I feel like he's going to end up in the
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: AFC East.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: You mentioned Miami. Yeah, that's a possibility.
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: I think the Giants are for some reason, and they
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: have some roster talent and Elik Neighbors will be back,
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: and I get that. I'm just maybe it's just me
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: not being totally sold on Jackson Dart. It seems like
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: the Giants are the bell of the ball. And maybe
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: it's New York and the Giants, you know, organization is
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: a good organization, and they do have, you know, some talent,
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: especially on defense, I.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: Think, and maybe some of it is that Jackson Dart
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: isn't the kind of guy you need to be.
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: Completely sold on.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: You have the flexibility either roll with him or if
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: you don't like it, like you're not like for instance,
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: in Tennessee. And I'm surprised Tennessee is not more desired
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: because I thought cam Ward, with what he had actually
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: played pretty well this year, thought he had Drake rookie
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: Drake mayish season. But like you go to Tennessee, cam
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Ward's a quarterback. That's a non negotiable. I wonder if
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: the Giants are open to hearing more ideas at quarterback.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: They should be, and that might make it more of
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: an ideal landing spot for some coaches who want to
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: go else Now. It's not a good year to need
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: a quarterback, right but unless you're getting Fromana Mendoza. But
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: I wonder if maybe some coaches look at it and say, well,
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: I want this veteran, I want this draft pick, and
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: you know, it doesn't They don't have to be tied
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: to Jackson Dark.
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: The Giants are always in, you know, in some ways
- 1:28:41Speaker 4: understandably or are viewed as a very stable, very good ownership. Obviously,
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: it's New York and they have a lot of to
- 1:28:48Speaker 4: bankroll off of the market that they're in, so they
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: they they're always looked at as a very good organization.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: The Titans, I agree with you.
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: I actually think if I was Tennessee, I would be
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: full court pressing Mike McCarthy. I think that that would
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: be a great hire for them. It's an offensive coach
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: who I don't think is totally done, Like I don't
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: think his system was totally outdated in Dallas, and he's
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: an offensive coach that can help cam Ward. But he's
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: also got a pedigree and he's got a background. I
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: think the hardest thing that we're seeing, and I wanted
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: to talk a little bit about what's going on in
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: Washington and Detroit as well with their coordinators, is you know,
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: John Harbaugh. But based off all the reporting, John Harbaugh
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: is a CEO head coach. He was a special teams coordinator.
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: He doesn't major in offensive defense, so his coordinator hires
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: are everything, especially offensive coordinator. So there was some you know,
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: rub or some tension with Todd Monkin, their offensive coordinator,
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: who last year probably should have coached Lamar Jackson to
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: an MVP and is I think a very good offensive coordinator, but.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: Ship wanted ahead.
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: John Harbad sounds like might have landed on the sword
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: for Todd Mankin and said, you're not firing Todd Monkin.
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: So whatever the case may be, when you look at
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: these coaching hires this cycle, there's not a ton of
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: great options. Now John Harbaugh is available. But I want to,
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: you know, talking about the CEO thing, which we've talked
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: about a million times, the Patriots have a honeymoon type
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: of thing where Josh McDaniels is an awesome offensive coordinator
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: probably is never going to get another shot as a
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: head coach, and Mike Vrabel is an awesome CEO head
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: coach who has a coordinator that has you know, job
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: security and is going to stay here.
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: Even if Josh doesley. I mean it's gonna be. It's
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: not gonna be for a few years.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: And look, if Drake Nate can't handle coordinator change five, right,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: you know he should be able to.
- 1:30:50Speaker 4: But the point I'm getting at is we're seeing now
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: in Detroit they fired John Morton, their offensive coordinator. Couldn't
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: have seen that coming, and they fire Cliff Kingsbury or
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: parted ways with Cliff Kingsbury and Washington. That is Dan Campbell,
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: who was calling plays for Detroit at the end of
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: last season, but really as a CEO, you know, leader
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: of men type head coach, and Dan Quinn who's a
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: defensive head coach. This whole thing is just kind of
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: fascinating to me about where this coaching cycle moves because
- 1:31:21Speaker 4: I think it's hard if you have to hit on
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: your coordinator hires. If you do hit on your coordinator hires,
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: you have to hit on another round of coordinator hires.
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: So exactly what happened in Detroit is a situation that
- 1:31:34Speaker 4: everybody is trying to avoid.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: Where they hit, they had.
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: Great success, they made an NFC championship game, Ben Johnson
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: and Aaron Glenn get hired away. I don't think Aaron
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: Glenn ended up being a huge loss. But Ben Johnson,
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: the defense wasn't great. It wasn't great with Aaron Glenn either,
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: but Ben Johnson was a massive, massive loss for that team,
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: and now they're kind of back at square one.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: I just met that more the sense that I don't
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: think Glenn's results in the Jets are indicative of what
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: happened in it.
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: He's not a zero ben.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: Ben Johnson could have blown up in chicagoan we'd still
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: be talking about what big a loss he does for
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: the for the Lions. So no, they have a great
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: It's it's part of the reason the Patriots have a
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: great setup, and that's why it's so important. And it's
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: something Bill Belichick did for years and years and years,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: and ultimately when they kind of failed to do it
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: was a big part of things falling apart at the end.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: You have to have the pipeline. It's not just getting
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: the OC you know, job rights the quarterbacks coach and
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: the tight ends coach and the offensive line coach, and
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: you know, getting not one, but multiple of those guys
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: ready to step into the OC job when the time comes,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: and then replacing them, and you know, you have to
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: be able to do that and the pipeline dried up
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: in Detroit and dried up in other places.
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: They didn't really have a succession plan in truth exactly.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: And that's the problem. Like if you go back, I
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: love doing this thing. If you go back and people
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: talk about the one Patriots coaches have the O one,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: O four, and it's it's it's it's Belichick, it's Charlie Weiss,
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: it's Romeo Cornell, like dream Team. Well, Josh McDaniels is
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: an assistant on that staff and Eric Eric Manjini's it like,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: and then all the guys from the next era were
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: assistants on that staff. And then when those guys with
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: the coordinators, you go, look, it's like Matt Patrician, Brian
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: Flores and like, those guys are the assistants on the
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: next one. And they always had another guy ready to
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: step up. And because you know when that guy leaves,
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: when Ben Jonson leaves, he's gonna take people with them.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: You can't take everybody, so you got to make sure
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: that you have multiple people ready to be that next guy.
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: And I think that's so important.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: And you know, now you have these jobs like run
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Game Pass Corps, run game Coordinator, Pass game coordinator. What
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: a great way to get your next coordinator ready and
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: teams capitalizing on that. So again with McDaniels, we think
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: he's probably a lot to stay here. But having a
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: guy like Thomas Brown, having a guy like Ashton Grant
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: in the roles they're in young guys who are kind
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: of right there with McDaniels doing it that if he
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: did leave Todd Downing, so you have the next guy
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: up on defense, right, Zach Korr, being right there and
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: ready to go.
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: So I think that's it's not so much. I know,
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: people you.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Have to hire offensive coaches. Do you think you coaches
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: don't mean anything? I know you don't, but people do.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: I don't think it's so much that if you plan
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: to never hire another good coach, then yeah, you should
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: probably hire an offensive coach.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: So Dan Campbell.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: But but I think the real what really sets organizations
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: apart coaching wise, is how deep is your pipeline, How
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: good are you at hiring the positional coaches, the assistant
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: positional coaches right keeping that room stocked so you can
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: just churn through and go to the next guy.
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: That's a great organization apart.
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: Sure, And I think what was so weird about the
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: Lions is that they let Tanner Egstrant just walk out
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: the door right exactly, and like, I don't I know,
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: the Jets offense was a train wreck, but it wasn't
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: who work, It wasn't poorly coordinated. They just had no talent, right,
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: every time I watched the Jets tape on offense, it
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: just was talentless. But I wasn't like this is sloppy,
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: this is messy, Like it wasn't bad. It just there's
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: just no talent on the field. So I would love
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: to know, you know, if I was a Lions reporter,
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: I would love to ask Dan Campbell, like why didn't
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: you block Aaron Glenn from taking Tanner Egstrand with you?
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: Because it seems like that is that was really their
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: succession plan. Engstrand decides to go to the Jets with
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: Aaron Glenn and you weren't.
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: Even have to block him from going.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: Just give him the promotion, right, and then Morton is
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: more of like an offensive line guy, not necessarily a
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: coordinator like and offensive line guy. He's a guy that
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: hadn't been there. Yeah, so all the success that you had,
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: wouldn't it be great?
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: Okay?
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: Ben Johnson's not in the building, but somebody who watched
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: Ben Johnson do everything he did that could maybe tap
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: into that there's value in that they go outside of that.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: I guess he'd been there. Morton was there for a year,
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: I think because like a senior assistant, but no like
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: having a guy because Engstrand had been there I think
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: for a while. Right he came up with Ben Johnson. Yeah, so, uh,
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: we're going to he was there before Benjons Yeah, so
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: Moreen was in twenty twenty two.
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: He was there.
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: He's a wide receivers coach in San Francisco. But I
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: remember when he got to that like coordinator senior assistant level,
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: he was working a lot with like protections and run
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: blocking and things like that.
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: So Engstrom was the pass game coordinator under Ben Johnson. Like,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: that's such a natural you want natural progression. The guy
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: in the building, who's the guy you lost, left hand man,
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: right hand man, whatever you want to put it makes
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: so much more sense than a guy who hasn't been here,
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: who didn't see the success we had. Look, if your
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: team sucks, you probably want to go outside.
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: That's not saying.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: Every team should be promoting within forever. But if you're
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: a good team, you're gonna lose guys not because you're
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: firing them because they're doing a bad job, but because
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: they're getting hired elsewhere. And when they do that, you want,
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: I think you'd want somebody who was in the building
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: to replace them.
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: And people will hear that and say, well, don't you
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: want outside voices?
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: You can still bring in the senior assistant, the senior advisor, whatever,
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: or the outside voices come from, you know, to the
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: Patriots case, a guy like Riley Larkin who was at
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: Ohio State was in a different place and comes in
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: on the ground floor and brings that outside knowledge and
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: learns within your system with the basis of that outside knowledge.
- 1:37:11Speaker 4: The biggest thing I would say, you know from the
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: Patriots of the pass that Belichick.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: You know, we talked about it.
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: McDaniels talked about it when they hired Rabel, about picking
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: him up at the airport. As like the Aaron Boy
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: right of the coaching staff in like two thousand and one,
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: that the Aaron Boys in two thousand and one were
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: Josh McDaniels, Brian Dable, Matt Patricia, like those guys started
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: in like the closet in your film room and you know,
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: cutting up things for Belichick and things like that.
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: So in four, I'll just give it you real quick.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: And four you had, first of all, in the front
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: office in supporting roles. You had Nick Casario, Thomas de
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Mittrof and a couple other guys who obviously went on
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: to him success. Josh McDaniels is the quarterbacks coach. I
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: think those first or second year in that role. He
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: started as a defensive assistant and then became yeah, first
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: year as the quarterbacks coach. Know. Four, Brian dave All
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: as the wide receivers coach, Matt Patricia was an offensive
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: coaching assistant. You had Eric Manngini on the defensive coaching
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: staff as a general assistant.
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: So that that that's obviously the blueprint. And you know
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: it's easy to sit here and say, oh, that's the
- 1:38:24Speaker 4: blueprint as the sixth time Super Bowl champion winning coach, right.
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: Like you know, but that's like there's a reason that worked.
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: Yeah, But the other thing I wanted to mention and
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: then we'll take these last.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: Calls to keep going. Sorry, and O seven McDaniels is
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: the OC. You know, Bill O'Brien on the offensive staff
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: as an assistant. You have Matt Patricia Josh Boyer on
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: the defensive staff.
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: Like it just it keeps churning.
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: Through the other thing I wanted to mention was what
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: happened in Cleveland. So Kevin Stefanski gets fired in Cleveland.
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: Kevin Stefanskie is a good coach. It was probably time, like, yeah,
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: at some point, you got to win, right like that,
- 1:38:58Speaker 4: that's what the league is about.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: Right year and say he's a good coach. He's a
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: good coach at some point.
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: And I know he got that team to the playoffs
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: when you know, with Joe Flacco and stuff like that,
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: but it didn't win.
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: They weren't winning.
- 1:39:08Speaker 4: It was the whole brown thing. Uh, So Stefanski's out. Stefanski,
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: I think, is going to get recycled right back in.
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: If I had to guess, Uh, there's.
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: Just going to get whoever the runner up for Harbay is.
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: There's just too many openings and he's too solid of
- 1:39:23Speaker 4: a higher He's not. It's not an innovative or exciting
- 1:39:27Speaker 4: hire per se, but it's just a solid higher. I
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: doubt that he'll have to take the a gap year.
- 1:39:32Speaker 4: Maybe he does, uh, you know, because I had a
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: lot of people asking, well, what who could Stefanski do
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: what Rabel did in Cleveland with the Patriots.
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: I I don't.
- 1:39:41Speaker 4: I don't know if that's going to have to happen
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: for Stefanski. The other thing that I would say about
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: this that I think is more prevalent is all of
- 1:39:49Speaker 4: Stefanski's assistant coaches, right because Rabel was just in Cleveland
- 1:39:54Speaker 4: last year with all these guys. He brought Ashton Grant
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: already with him from the Cleveland staff to New England
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: this year. So the two names that I would look at,
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: and this kind of ties back to what the caller
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: mentioned that kind of brought this all up, is that
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: Thomas Brown is interviewing in Arizona for the head coaching position.
- 1:40:12Speaker 4: I don't think Thomas Brown's going to be a head
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: coach in the league. I do think Thomas Brown might
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: be a coordinator. Yeah, yet I don't think the city.
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: I do think there's a chance that Thomas Brown is
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: an offensive coordinator or a play caller someplace else next year.
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: So when I look at this whole.
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: Thing, with what happened in Cleveland, there's probably a million
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: low level assistants that we don't really know a ton
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: about that could be coming to New England. But the
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: two big fishes, Jim Schwartz on the defensive side of
- 1:40:42Speaker 4: the ball and Tommy Reeves on the offensive side of
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: the ball. So is there a chance that if Thomas
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: Brown moves on and becomes a play caller someplace else
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: or a coordinator or whatever. It's really simple to just say,
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: you know, Thomas Brown out Tommy Reeson, Like that's a
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: pretty tight ends pass game coordinator title. Uh, Tommy Reese
- 1:41:04Speaker 4: was the tight ends coach in Cleveland, I believe.
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: My end's coach and pass game specialists not cordating the
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: same exact deal. Well, and the other thing with Tommy
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: rees too that you could do is like, does Ashton
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: Grant get bumped up for a coordinator job just having
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: been so adjacent to Drake May.
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it's Tommy Reese becomes quarterbacks coach.
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I like Ashton Grant a lot. I think he's
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: a little young.
- 1:41:24Speaker 3: So yeah, but I know how this works when you're
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: ready for though, Yeah, when you're adjacent to somebody who's great, like.
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: That's going to be Thomas Brown. Thomas Brown is going
- 1:41:33Speaker 4: to get the credit for being adjacent.
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: Well, does somebody offer Ashton Grant the passing game coordinator thing?
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: It's possible or maybe that's when he comes here.
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: But like I look at it with Stefanski, right, because
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: Ashton Grant was in Cleveland with Stefanski.
- 1:41:45Speaker 3: Yeah, Stefanski doesn't.
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: Call the plays wherever he goes, So you can have
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: kind of a younger Roc you could.
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: I think you ever hire Stefanski though, is going to
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: want him to try to branch out a.
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: Little bit in terms of that.
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: But I I I'm not trying to like rail or
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: pooh pooh Ashton. He's just like, I think he's got
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: a couple more years to learn the tricks of the trade.
- 1:42:05Speaker 3: I just wonder if adjacent to Drake may speeds him
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: up a little bit.
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: Maybe with Thomas Brown, I think that that's possible. I
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: think Tommy Reese is a prime candidate on the defensive
- 1:42:14Speaker 4: side of the ball. Jim Schwartz. Jim Schwartz was on
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: vrabel staff in Tennessee for a minute. He was in
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: Cleveland with him last year. There's an affinity there, There's
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: a relationship there. I just want to be clear, like
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: I'm not saying that they should fire Zach Korr.
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: Okay, but and they still have Terrell Williams though.
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: Technically Terrell Williams. I would imagine that Terrell Williams is
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: probably not going to be coaching again in the NFL
- 1:42:40Speaker 4: given his health situation. That's just a hunch. I don't
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: know any information. I'm just saying I imagine that that
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: might be the case.
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: Well, they could they keep him around as like an
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: advisor too or something like.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: I'm not saying like just throw him to the curve.
- 1:42:51Speaker 4: I'm just saying I don't think he's going to be
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: coaching in a full capacity, okay in the NFL. Yeah,
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: if that's the case, Like, does Jim Schwartz come in
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: as the same title that he was in Tennessee, which
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: was senior defensive assistant and just help a young coordinator
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: in Zach Korr with some of the details of the
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: scheme and the game planning and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: I think that that would really help a lot. You know,
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: Terrell Williams has been around a little bit, but totally
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: totally fair, Like nobody should expect anything with the guy
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: that's trying to fight cancer. You know, to come in
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: here and help coach a football team. So with Jim Schwartz,
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: I think that there has that element to it that
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: he could bring to the table, you know, just looking
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: at it objectively, like could he come in and help
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: them with game plans a little bit so they don't
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: get scripted early in games is easily, you know, third
- 1:43:43Speaker 4: down game script openings, drives, things like that. Those are
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: the types of things that like an experienced coordinator like
- 1:43:50Speaker 4: Schwartz would be able to do. I don't see Rabel
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: taking the play calling away from Core because I think
- 1:43:58Speaker 4: one of the big things that Rabel, going all the
- 1:44:00Speaker 4: way back to January when I talked to him at
- 1:44:03Speaker 4: the Senior Bowl, Rabel said that he's into developing people,
- 1:44:07Speaker 4: Like he's really big on developing coaches, developing players, developing
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: people that are within his web.
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: And I think.
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: Zach Korr is like a project for him, Like he
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: wants to develop Zach Korr as a coach. So I
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: don't think he's gonna like one and done Zach Korr
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: and then just replace him with Jim Schwartz. But he
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: might add Jim Schwartz to the staff as like a
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: brain power.
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: How about Shane Bowen.
- 1:44:31Speaker 4: That's possible too. Shane Bowen is really really tight with Corr.
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: So Shane Bowen is the Giants defensive coordinator who obviously
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: well now was I seeah in theory.
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: They fired him?
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, they fired him right, but Patriots right, So
- 1:44:46Speaker 4: he's uh, he's out in the Giants.
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: So that's another one. And that's one.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: He's with the whole time in Tennessee and he was
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: there his DC for the last couple of years.
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know what Zach Korr's relationship is with
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: Jim Schwartz.
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: I do know for a fact that Zach Korr looks
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: at Shane Bowen, is like a mentor for him in
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: the coaching world, and is very very tight with Shane Bowen.
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: So maybe that dynamic would work a little bit better.
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: I don't know, but either way, it does create and
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: I know that your station will jump all over this.
- 1:45:18Speaker 4: It does create a like you know, Rabel has somebody
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: over the shoulder kind of there.
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: And ready to take it over.
- 1:45:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and we had this with Thomas Brown and Josh McDaniels,
- 1:45:28Speaker 4: which was crazy, of course, but we had it. And
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: if Shane Bowen gets hired as a former Rabel DC
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: or Jim Schwartz gets hired as a very very widely
- 1:45:36Speaker 4: respected defensive coordinator. If Zach Korr has a rough start,
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: that's we're going to be doing it on the other
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: side of the ball.
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: So that's one thing to think about. But I do
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: think that they could use the.
- 1:45:47Speaker 4: Talent or the brain power, you know, of adding a
- 1:45:51Speaker 4: guy with a real coordinator experience to help out a young.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: Guy like Zach warn Yeah, is there anything I think
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: that's it? On the coaches? We only have five minutes.
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: It'll be really interesting to see what happens with the
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: Bills this weekend.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: I had this thought last night, like Harbaugh to the
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: Bills makes I would not yep sign yet. If I'm Harbaugh,
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: I would wait and see what happens with Buffalo, So
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: I would assume are there any playoff teams that are
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: I guess I feel like Tomlin's going to be safe
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: now that they made it, But are there any other
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: playoff teams that you think like the coach needs a
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: win to keep his job.
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: Is Philly still there?
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: We've talked about Philly being there and think so unless
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: the floor there, unless that's like an absolute train wreck
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: behind the scenes that we don't know about, which it
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: might be.
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: You know what about Tomlin? Like is Tomlin Tomlin?
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: Maybe but he's not well. Actually, him to the Steelers
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: would be awesome.
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: Could you imagine that I'm switching. That's not going to happen,
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: But I I the floor.
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: There were some rumblings when they were struggling in the
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: middle of the season at his job. I whether it's
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: Green Bay or Buffalo, I wait if from Harball because
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: those are much better jobs than anything that's open right now.
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: I would say Pittsburgh is still tenuous at best. Like
- 1:46:59Speaker 4: day one the Division on a miss.
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: Field goal that was you know, it was a forty
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: two yarder that the kid missed.
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: You know, like that was not.
- 1:47:06Speaker 3: But we know Pittsburgh doesn't fire coaches.
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: Yeah, they're not gonna make their first ever coach firing
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: after for a team that made the playoffs.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: That they made the playoffs, but let's face it.
- 1:47:15Speaker 3: They made it. But they we know how they look
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: at what's a better opening, uh, Baltimore, Buffalo, Buffalo?
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: I think Baltimore. The Lamar situation is just a little
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: bit dicey.
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: What's the better opening Baltimore green.
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: Bay, Green Bay. I think they have a better rosters.
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: I'd wait. If I was, I'd wait, it's close.
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: It's close with all those three teams.
- 1:47:40Speaker 4: I think I would rather invest in Josh Allen than
- 1:47:43Speaker 4: invest in Lamar, just because Lamar has been hurt and
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: whatever is going on with Lamar behind the scenes in Baltimore,
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: I think that there's a little bit of weirdness going
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: on there.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: I get no, I agree with you, but I'm like,
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: not that Harbaugh can go back to Baltimore.
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: I'm just pointing out, like those are good.
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: Baltimore considered the number one opening right now, and those
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: are both better.
- 1:48:03Speaker 4: If Buffalo loses on Sunday to Jacksonville, there's no doubt
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: that that will be on the hot seat. And I'm
- 1:48:10Speaker 4: sorry we might not get to the calls, but this
- 1:48:12Speaker 4: is important for the AFCs. Sean McDermott has been taking
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: some not so subtle shots at Brandon Bean, their general manager.
- 1:48:21Speaker 3: Over the last call was not done a good job,
- 1:48:23Speaker 3: by the way.
- 1:48:23Speaker 4: No, So the first shot that he took was about
- 1:48:25Speaker 4: Jacoby Myers, who was traded at the trade deadline to Jacksonville.
- 1:48:30Speaker 4: I assume that Buffalo was in it and didn't want
- 1:48:33Speaker 4: to outbid Jacksonville for Jacobe Myers.
- 1:48:37Speaker 3: Jacoby Myers has been.
- 1:48:38Speaker 4: Great in Jacksonville and might be a reason why the
- 1:48:41Speaker 4: Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Bills on Sunday in the playoffs.
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: I think Buffalo, but it's it's close.
- 1:48:49Speaker 4: So he took a little shot at the being for that,
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: and then Max Harriston their their rookie corner has been
- 1:48:57Speaker 4: hurt all year, like you know, soft tissue things and
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: things like this one and a half, he's hurt again
- 1:49:02Speaker 4: and probably isn't going to play in the playoff game,
- 1:49:05Speaker 4: and so he took another shot at him about the
- 1:49:07Speaker 4: depth at corn. Yeah, and that tells me that there's
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: some sort of behind the scenes tension between those two
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: guys who have been together forever since Carolina and all
- 1:49:17Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. But my guess is is that
- 1:49:21Speaker 4: that if they lose and they go one undone in
- 1:49:23Speaker 4: the playoffs on Sunday, like that could definitely be a
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: power struggle, you know who wins.
- 1:49:29Speaker 3: Yeah, whereas g should probably both be out.
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: Yeah, but they might both be out.
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna throw a Green Bay one in there again.
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: I'm just gonna you know.
- 1:49:38Speaker 3: It, does it feels like they're underperforming.
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Micah got hurt, so that's a big
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: part of it.
- 1:49:44Speaker 3: And how how long has Laflour been there a while,
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: It's been a while.
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:49:47Speaker 3: How many playoff wins?
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: Does he have a couple?
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: I mean they went to the NFC Championship game. What
- 1:49:53Speaker 4: was that against San Francisco?
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: That was with Rogers. That was not that recently. He
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: is three and five in the playoffs. He's won one
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: playoff game since twenty twenty.
- 1:50:05Speaker 4: Okay, I mean, yeah, it's definitely possible. But like you
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: know with Aught with the same thing with John Harbaugh,
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: if Matt Lafore gets fired, he's gonna have a job
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: in two seconds.
- 1:50:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean sometimes you just gotta fair enough. It's
- 1:50:19Speaker 3: not working.
- 1:50:20Speaker 4: It's not working, all right, we gotta wrap it up.
- 1:50:22Speaker 4: I'm sorry to some of the callers that we had
- 1:50:24Speaker 4: to leave. PU will be up in nine minutes, so
- 1:50:26Speaker 4: we'll get to your phone calls on Patriots Unfiltered. I'll
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: be on there for the first hour Sunday kickoff on Sunday.
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: Huh, we're gonna do. We're gonna do.
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: We're gonna set something up there.
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: We're gonna do a little in studio action on Sunday
- 1:50:38Speaker 4: morning before Patriots Chargers. On Sunday night, I'll be in
- 1:50:42Speaker 4: studio with the Sports Hubs, so be sure to listen
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: to Sunday Kickoff and then I'll be on there for
- 1:50:46Speaker 4: one of the hours of the show as well, so
- 1:50:49Speaker 4: that would be fun. And then Sunday Night football Patriots
- 1:50:52Speaker 4: Chargers playoff game. Next week, we'll be back here on
- 1:50:55Speaker 4: CASH twenty two. I hope that we're talking about the
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: divisional round playoffs and the Patriot it's playing Jacksonville or
- 1:51:01Speaker 4: whoever they draw in the divisional round. We'll obviously do
- 1:51:04Speaker 4: a full autopsy of the game winner lose, So we'll
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: talk to you guys, then pee us up in a
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: few minutes, righte.
