Latest / Foul Territory / Mark Trumbo’s Angels offseason thoughts: Anthony Rendon buyout, Mike Trout status, What’s next?
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Here's Mark Rumbo joining us on FT on a huge day.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Halo Territory was just announced as the newest addition to
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Foul Territory network. Mark, great to have you on
- 0:11Speaker 1: the show. Congrats on being part of the newest show
- 0:14Speaker 1: and what can you tell us about it?
- 0:18Speaker 2: Thank you. I'm happy to eddy opportunity to do something
- 0:22Speaker 2: and ample free time as I guess a lot of
- 0:26Speaker 2: ex players tend to have, and this made a lot
- 0:28Speaker 2: of sense, so I said, you know, I think I
- 0:31Speaker 2: have something to contribute. At least. I watch a lot
- 0:35Speaker 2: of the games the Angels have played, for better or
- 0:39Speaker 2: worse in the last few years, so I am familiar
- 0:43Speaker 2: with the cummings and goings, and I think with my
- 0:46Speaker 2: co host Mike di Giovanna, should be a good mix
- 0:50Speaker 2: and hopefully the fans enjoy what we're able to provide.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Hey, give us a little taste of the first episode,
- 0:57Speaker 1: right so it's up there now, it's on the U
- 1:00Speaker 1: tube channel podcast as well. Give us a taste of
- 1:02Speaker 1: what the first episode is about, and also just to
- 1:04Speaker 1: mix in your thoughts on the Angels offseason so far.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I think the first episode basically covers what you just asked.
- 1:12Speaker 2: We kind of highlighted a few of the guys that
- 1:15Speaker 2: they've brought into the fold, some areas of need, and
- 1:21Speaker 2: you know, kind of just trying to paint a picture
- 1:23Speaker 2: of where this franchise is, where they're possibly headed or not.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And I know, you know, a lot of fans see
- 1:32Speaker 2: some of the big names remaining and think that, you know,
- 1:35Speaker 2: they'd be an excellent fit, Cody Bellinger being one of them.
- 1:39Speaker 2: But I don't think there's a lot of logic in
- 1:41Speaker 2: saying that he, you know, is probable. As much as
- 1:45Speaker 2: some people might like him, They need a center fielder.
- 1:47Speaker 2: You know, he provides excellent defense in a left handed bat,
- 1:50Speaker 2: which is also needed. Third base is a position that's
- 1:54Speaker 2: up in the air as well. They might have Christin
- 1:56Speaker 2: Moore start there, but he's another guy that's been you know,
- 2:01Speaker 2: to the big leagues, along with a few others. Netto
- 2:03Speaker 2: has panned out way better than most, But you know,
- 2:08Speaker 2: these guys are still learning on the fly, which I
- 2:10Speaker 2: think is incredibly tough, and it's kind of a new
- 2:12Speaker 2: thing because it's it's not the way it was. You
- 2:15Speaker 2: know when I was coming up and with AJ and
- 2:17Speaker 2: Eric as well, I'm sure you know you got ample
- 2:20Speaker 2: seasoning in the lower levels and then you know you were,
- 2:23Speaker 2: you know, prepared when you got up and I'm sure
- 2:26Speaker 2: you might be exposed to a few things, but some
- 2:28Speaker 2: of these guys are literally learning on the fly. And
- 2:31Speaker 2: I think that's part of what I was hearing last
- 2:33Speaker 2: year with the culture of the clubhouse. It was, you know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: maybe not what a veteran player would be as interested in,
- 2:41Speaker 2: with more of a classroom learning environment going on daily
- 2:44Speaker 2: talking about base running for twenty minutes. I know personally
- 2:47Speaker 2: that you know, wouldn't be something as a free agent
- 2:50Speaker 2: I would be interested in. So I think it's going
- 2:52Speaker 2: to be a lot better with the coaching staff they
- 2:54Speaker 2: brought in, and I think that's probably the biggest highlight
- 2:57Speaker 2: so far is some of the names they were able
- 3:00Speaker 2: to bring in, and they're kind of contrary to the
- 3:04Speaker 2: other hirings going on around the league. A lot of
- 3:06Speaker 2: ex players and a lot of guys with a lot
- 3:08Speaker 2: of experience. So maybe you guys can can give your
- 3:10Speaker 2: thoughts on that too. With John Gibbons and Brady Anderson
- 3:14Speaker 2: and Maddox and some of the other guys.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I want to see, I want to see what you
- 3:20Speaker 3: you said, you said, you watch this team all the time.
- 3:22Speaker 3: What did you see from this team? Not not like
- 3:24Speaker 3: the behind the scenes stuff like you were just talking
- 3:26Speaker 3: about how they were young, they got to talk about
- 3:29Speaker 3: like how to run the first base and the big
- 3:31Speaker 3: leagues and all that kind of stuff. But what did
- 3:33Speaker 3: you see on a night in a night out basis
- 3:35Speaker 3: that made you go like, this team just is not
- 3:39Speaker 3: like they need a little bit more time in Triple
- 3:41Speaker 3: A or they have this guy out of position.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Well that that playing out of position is one of
- 3:48Speaker 2: the biggest things. When you have an infielder in the outfield,
- 3:50Speaker 2: they're going to get exposed. And it's not the player's fault.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I was someone who roamed around a bit. You know,
- 3:59Speaker 2: they're opinions on my defense, which I would probably agree
- 4:04Speaker 2: with them for the most part. But it's a tall
- 4:07Speaker 2: task if you're you know, completely used to playing middle
- 4:09Speaker 2: infield and you're thrust out into right field. Ring GIFO
- 4:12Speaker 2: is the guy I'm kind of referring to here, What
- 4:15Speaker 2: are realistic expectations of a guy? I mean, it's it's
- 4:18Speaker 2: kind of ludicrous to think he's gonna, you know, be
- 4:21Speaker 2: a seamless fit. But I saw a team that had
- 4:25Speaker 2: some moments, but inevitably, you know, once the All Star
- 4:30Speaker 2: break kind of came around, it only went one way,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and by September completely out of it, you know, with
- 4:38Speaker 2: injuries mounting, and it just wasn't it wasn't an op
- 4:43Speaker 2: you know for fans. I don't know. I think there's
- 4:47Speaker 2: pretty much two camps. Those that are eternally optimistic and
- 4:51Speaker 2: always hope for the best, I guess, and I think
- 4:54Speaker 2: most probably fall into the slightly skeptical, if not totally
- 4:57Speaker 2: cynical range, where there wondering what is the direction? You know,
- 5:02Speaker 2: A lot of relievers signed this winter. Thirty five years
- 5:06Speaker 2: and older. Drew Pomerance I think was actually an excellent sign.
- 5:11Speaker 2: You know, from facing him. He is a very tough
- 5:13Speaker 2: at bat, and he's still you know, it seems to
- 5:16Speaker 2: not really age. So that's a great addition. Grayson Rodriguez
- 5:20Speaker 2: should be a very nice fit if healthy. And then
- 5:23Speaker 2: you got some flyers with Manoa and Romano amongst others.
- 5:30Speaker 4: All right, sorry, I just I thought I thought we
- 5:32Speaker 4: were Are we showing these off?
- 5:34Speaker 5: Just just me and just Crat you have one of these,
- 5:37Speaker 5: because just Mark, hang off, Just hang on, I'm Mark
- 5:40Speaker 5: and I we're showing these off right, Oh, sorry.
- 5:43Speaker 3: I can't reach mine. Oh actually I wasn't good enough
- 5:46Speaker 3: to hit to get one.
- 5:47Speaker 5: So anyway, I didn't know we were showing that Marquez
- 5:50Speaker 5: is behind him, so I'm just oh, I didn't know
- 5:54Speaker 5: the yeah that I was just Oh, that silver bat
- 5:57Speaker 5: thing that he has, Yeah, we have one of those
- 6:00Speaker 5: on the set.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Too, Mark, I guess if you know, you know, I
- 6:04Speaker 2: don't have a ton of.
- 6:05Speaker 4: They won't even let them on this. They won't even
- 6:06Speaker 4: let me put mine on the set.
- 6:07Speaker 5: I had to ask one of our guys behind the
- 6:10Speaker 5: scenes to bring mine to me, so I'm not even
- 6:11Speaker 5: allowed to show mine off.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm glad it's there, though a little bit reflective,
- 6:15Speaker 2: but you know it's nice.
- 6:17Speaker 1: We all don't have a camera like you do that
- 6:18Speaker 1: tell the podcast c because people.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Later, Mark has a Silver Slugger behind him, so I
- 6:23Speaker 5: had to get Michael Beard to get mine. He gah
- 6:26Speaker 5: socks on too. For those women out there that are wondering, Yes,
- 6:28Speaker 5: he has sucks anymore.
- 6:29Speaker 1: He doesn't sleep, but silver Slugger two time All Star
- 6:32Speaker 1: forty seven homers was the season high. They had a
- 6:35Speaker 1: nice three times over thirty.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Very nice career, very nice career mark.
- 6:39Speaker 5: But here's my question for the for Angels fans out there,
- 6:41Speaker 5: and you watch the Angels much more than I do.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Can they find enough pitching? Ever? Can they ever find
- 6:48Speaker 4: enough pitching?
- 6:48Speaker 5: It's always like, gosh, we have these position players, we
- 6:50Speaker 5: have this, we have that, and then they never and
- 6:52Speaker 5: then when they try to sign a picture it's a
- 6:54Speaker 5: short term deal. It doesn't seem like it works out.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Can the Angels ever find pitching enough to get them
- 6:59Speaker 5: back into this race in the Al West?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Well? I mean, how do you where do pictures come from?
- 7:06Speaker 2: You either develop them, which they've you know, a very
- 7:11Speaker 2: poor track record, if I'm being honest, I think that
- 7:15Speaker 2: when I was there it was slightly better, but it
- 7:17Speaker 2: was never really a strength. Some organizations just churn them out. Tampa,
- 7:22Speaker 2: the Braves, you know, others that come to mind, and
- 7:27Speaker 2: you kind of wonder, you know, especially when you're coming
- 7:29Speaker 2: up with an organization, where are they finding these guys?
- 7:31Speaker 2: Or you know, why are they so hard to hit?
- 7:33Speaker 2: And I think with the advanced metrics data and everything else,
- 7:36Speaker 2: now it's becoming clear at least some of the you know,
- 7:40Speaker 2: secrets to what has been going on there hitting is
- 7:43Speaker 2: still you know, the wild West, although I see guys
- 7:46Speaker 2: going to various instructors in the off season that are
- 7:50Speaker 2: popular currently. But the other way to do it is
- 7:54Speaker 2: to free agents, and you've got to pay to play. Unfortunately,
- 7:58Speaker 2: I believe Kakuchi was, says C. J. Well, I mean CJ.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Wilson was, to my memory, was the last guy that
- 8:06Speaker 2: signed for significant money, and then Kakuchi got a three
- 8:10Speaker 2: year deal for sixty seven million ish, you know, so
- 8:15Speaker 2: beyond that, if you go cheap, you get what you get,
- 8:19Speaker 2: and sometimes it works out, but most of the time
- 8:22Speaker 2: it doesn't. Always you know what the fans are looking for,
- 8:28Speaker 2: and when you take flyers, you're putting a lot of
- 8:30Speaker 2: pressure on the pitching coach to sometimes work magic. In
- 8:34Speaker 2: the case of a Kirby Yates, you know, there's a
- 8:35Speaker 2: lot of history with him in mathematics, so I think
- 8:38Speaker 2: that's another good one. But as far as starting pitching,
- 8:41Speaker 2: you know, especially with injuries, I think last year they
- 8:43Speaker 2: were very fortunate. They had a lot of health, and
- 8:46Speaker 2: you know, they have some guys with some good stuff. Soriano.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of read Debt Meers and you
- 8:52Speaker 2: know a few others, but they're still lacking significantly when
- 8:56Speaker 2: compared to you know, the Dodgers, Blue Jays and others.
- 9:00Speaker 3: A man team that spends some money. You kind of
- 9:03Speaker 3: mentioned it. The Angels should be a destination, Mike, who
- 9:07Speaker 3: doesn't want to go to southern California and play there
- 9:10Speaker 3: and is way less pressure than if you went and
- 9:12Speaker 3: played for the Dodgers. Not that pressure is a bad thing.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I'm saying, like, free agent wise, shouldn't they be able
- 9:18Speaker 3: to make Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, of southern California
- 9:23Speaker 3: a destination for free agents to go to?
- 9:27Speaker 2: It once was, and you know, not that long ago,
- 9:31Speaker 2: living near the beach. There's nothing not to like, guys.
- 9:34Speaker 2: You know that part of it is always a plus,
- 9:38Speaker 2: But it is very hard to convince a guy that
- 9:41Speaker 2: has options, especially you know, if you have four or
- 9:44Speaker 2: five different teams that are interested in willing to offer
- 9:49Speaker 2: similarish money, why would you go to one that you
- 9:52Speaker 2: know is unfortunately probably going to be out of it
- 9:55Speaker 2: after the All Star break. That can make for an
- 9:57Speaker 2: incredibly long year. I think that that's the biggest thing
- 10:00Speaker 2: in my mind. And then you're going to have to deal,
- 10:03Speaker 2: you know, if you have a no trade clause, then
- 10:05Speaker 2: you can have more control over that, but you're probably
- 10:08Speaker 2: going to be somebody that's dangled out there and could
- 10:12Speaker 2: be going somewhere that you really don't want to or
- 10:15Speaker 2: somewhere that's better. So I think it starts with coming
- 10:20Speaker 2: up with a team that's at least capable of finishing
- 10:23Speaker 2: five hundred and then building from there. I don't see
- 10:28Speaker 2: the current talent being capable of much better than that.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I could be very surprised, and I'll eat my words
- 10:34Speaker 2: if so, but I think five hundred would be, you know,
- 10:38Speaker 2: a goal. That is it realistic? I hope it is,
- 10:41Speaker 2: and I'm sure on their end they think of it
- 10:43Speaker 2: that it is. But as far as a playoff team,
- 10:45Speaker 2: I think there's still quite a ways away.
- 10:48Speaker 5: It's just such amazing to hear me say this, because
- 10:50Speaker 5: I mean, when I came up to the Angels, they
- 10:52Speaker 5: want a World Series. I lost them in the LCS
- 10:54Speaker 5: in two thousand and two, and every year they were
- 10:56Speaker 5: in the playoffs, in the playoff on just they were.
- 11:00Speaker 5: She went to Anaheim and they had the thundersticks in
- 11:02Speaker 5: the rally. It was like, man, it was. It was
- 11:04Speaker 5: just a tough team to play against. For all those years,
- 11:06Speaker 5: So to hear you say what you're saying for all
- 11:08Speaker 5: these years and not being in the playoffs, just it
- 11:10Speaker 5: kind of breaks my heart a little bit, even though
- 11:12Speaker 5: the Angels fans don't exactly love me.
- 11:14Speaker 4: But my question for you is what of the young
- 11:16Speaker 4: guys can take the next step?
- 11:17Speaker 2: Mark?
- 11:18Speaker 5: Is it Netto that continues to get is it Shannewell?
- 11:20Speaker 5: Is it Christian Moore? Do we have a HOPI take,
- 11:23Speaker 5: you know, take a giant lead forward. Who's the guy
- 11:25Speaker 5: that you would put your money on to take the
- 11:27Speaker 5: next step and become a star?
- 11:31Speaker 2: Netto already is a borderline one. I mean, if you
- 11:34Speaker 2: look at some of the you know, war is not
- 11:37Speaker 2: my favorite step, but I know it's you know, I
- 11:39Speaker 2: people understand some of it at least. But you know,
- 11:43Speaker 2: he ranks extremely highly. You know, he can do a lot.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I at first, probably like most a guy that's thrust
- 11:50Speaker 2: into the big leagues that quick, who knows, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 2: it's sink or swim, And he's more than held his own.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I think that there's you know, a few incidents where
- 12:00Speaker 2: his emotions can get the better of him. So I
- 12:02Speaker 2: think that that's one area he can continue to work
- 12:04Speaker 2: on and develop, you know, some more leadership. I think
- 12:08Speaker 2: o'hapi is a very interesting one to me. He shows
- 12:13Speaker 2: signs of someone who could be a perennial All Star,
- 12:17Speaker 2: and in the next breath it seems like either he loses,
- 12:21Speaker 2: you know, a little bit of confidence or something happens
- 12:25Speaker 2: in the game, you know it. Unfortunately last year it
- 12:28Speaker 2: wasn't a pretty pitcher on both sides of the ball.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I know it was catching was something he was very
- 12:34Speaker 2: focused on in AJA. Well, both of you guys can
- 12:36Speaker 2: probably expand upon that, but I think it's it's got
- 12:38Speaker 2: to be incredibly hard if you know that you rate
- 12:41Speaker 2: very poorly defensively in the framing department, you know, and
- 12:47Speaker 2: pitch calling and other things, and you're trying to make
- 12:49Speaker 2: that better all the while produce at at a high
- 12:52Speaker 2: level on offense. And it seemed like it was just
- 12:55Speaker 2: a too tall a task. And I know I saw
- 12:56Speaker 2: some interviews at the end where he was going to
- 12:59Speaker 2: cut out some of the noise and hopefully get back to,
- 13:02Speaker 2: you know, what he trusts to work. Channewell is a
- 13:05Speaker 2: guy that's I think we kind of know what we're
- 13:08Speaker 2: going to get out of him. I have seen improvements
- 13:10Speaker 2: on defense, which is nice. He's not going to hit
- 13:13Speaker 2: that many home runs, there's no other way to put it.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I think he's explored that. But the best version of
- 13:18Speaker 2: him is going to be probably twelve to fifteen home
- 13:21Speaker 2: runs and getting on base. Although he's you know, not
- 13:26Speaker 2: gifted with foot speed like most guys that are table setters,
- 13:30Speaker 2: but that is his game. Christian Moore is kind of
- 13:33Speaker 2: an unknown. He very athletic, you know, obviously a high
- 13:37Speaker 2: draft pick. It seems like he's got a lot of
- 13:39Speaker 2: pop in the bat, but from when I saw last year,
- 13:42Speaker 2: he changed his stance multiple times, so I don't know
- 13:45Speaker 2: if that was his decision or or someone else's. And
- 13:49Speaker 2: when he got, you know, some chances in the big leagues,
- 13:51Speaker 2: it didn't look like the game sped up on him.
- 13:53Speaker 2: But I don't think he was able to really showcase
- 13:56Speaker 2: his talent all that much either.
- 13:59Speaker 3: All right, now that you got your own show, everybody's
- 14:02Speaker 3: gonna want to know Mike Trout when you hear that
- 14:05Speaker 3: name and when you watch this team and when you
- 14:08Speaker 3: think back to your ex teammate, you guys are both
- 14:11Speaker 3: young in the big leagues. Obviously, he's a few years
- 14:13Speaker 3: younger than you. What do you see not only from
- 14:18Speaker 3: his career before this season as the next step for
- 14:22Speaker 3: him to continue his ridiculous career.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Well, career wise, it speaks for itself. You know, even
- 14:32Speaker 2: when the team was not doing much, he was doing
- 14:36Speaker 2: a lot. And it's almost goofy to look at the
- 14:40Speaker 2: career numbers, and I mean I knew right away he
- 14:43Speaker 2: was light years better than me and light years better
- 14:46Speaker 2: than everyone else, you know, and you know, all the
- 14:49Speaker 2: while having an attitude of you know, just a playful,
- 14:53Speaker 2: you know, care free, not totally, but I just vividly
- 14:58Speaker 2: remember being stressed out of my mind in Oakland one day,
- 15:03Speaker 2: you know, not my best. Let's say I'm looking over
- 15:06Speaker 2: at him and just has this big smile, and I
- 15:08Speaker 2: was somewhat envious, like, yeah, you know, if I got
- 15:10Speaker 2: three hits and I'd probably be smiling too, But it
- 15:15Speaker 2: just seemed like the game came very easy. But he's
- 15:17Speaker 2: at a point now where unfortunately, these injuries have started
- 15:21Speaker 2: to compound and it's very tough. I know, he's got
- 15:25Speaker 2: a knee that isn't cooperating. It's probably as somebody that
- 15:30Speaker 2: had a big knee injury myself, I can kind of
- 15:32Speaker 2: testify that once it starts swelling on you. You know,
- 15:36Speaker 2: it's it's really a tough thing to manage. And you
- 15:38Speaker 2: want to go out there, you want to post, you
- 15:39Speaker 2: want to play, but the body might you know, it's
- 15:43Speaker 2: just a saying, it's it's not the way. As far
- 15:46Speaker 2: as outfield defense, again, here are some rumors that he
- 15:50Speaker 2: might be playing some center field. Last year, defense wasn't
- 15:54Speaker 2: a thing. They got a logjam with stillaire. I don't
- 15:57Speaker 2: see a fit for him on this ball club. So
- 16:00Speaker 2: maybe they're able to move him, or maybe they just
- 16:02Speaker 2: eat it. But you know, I have high hopes for Mike.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I know, he was a tremendous teammate to me. You know,
- 16:08Speaker 2: he's always been somewhat under the radar with the media
- 16:11Speaker 2: and whatnot, and I think he plays the game for
- 16:13Speaker 2: the right reasons and i'd love to see, you know,
- 16:16Speaker 2: a big resurgence one area. I'd really like to because
- 16:19Speaker 2: he's capable of so much. As the batting average, well
- 16:23Speaker 2: it might not be popular to everyone, I still think
- 16:26Speaker 2: it's incredibly important. And he's capable of hitting a lot
- 16:29Speaker 2: better than two thirty, so I think that, you know,
- 16:34Speaker 2: for him, i'd like to see that improve even if
- 16:38Speaker 2: nobody else cares. I think that that you know, you
- 16:40Speaker 2: don't want to look up there and see that when
- 16:42Speaker 2: you're a guy that's a career three hundred hitter. Maybe
- 16:44Speaker 2: I'm wrong, but you know, aj what do you think?
- 16:47Speaker 5: I agree, I'm a batting average guy, but it doesn't
- 16:50Speaker 5: matter that so much gets you paid. And you know what, Mark,
- 16:53Speaker 5: like you said you hate war. I'm also not a
- 16:54Speaker 5: huge war because no one can actually calculate or tell
- 16:56Speaker 5: you how it's calculating. There's different versions of it, and
- 16:59Speaker 5: it's like every person that we have on here, like
- 17:00Speaker 5: I don't really like works that when it gets you paid, right,
- 17:03Speaker 5: So hitting homers like you did it gets you paid.
- 17:05Speaker 5: So also you mentioned them eating Celaire's money, Like how
- 17:09Speaker 5: much money is already moreno gonna eat because he's eating
- 17:11Speaker 5: Rendon's money. Right, So man, if I'm already Morino, a'most
- 17:14Speaker 5: like I'm just I'm hungry. I'm eating all the money
- 17:16Speaker 5: of bad, bad players.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Do I mean? When you said that, I was like, oh, man,
- 17:21Speaker 4: I forgot he was even on the team.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Oh that's sixteen million. You know, I think I'd rather
- 17:28Speaker 2: just do it all at once. If if it were
- 17:30Speaker 2: me and it's not me for so but Rendon, that
- 17:35Speaker 2: didn't work at all, you think. I think I watched
- 17:40Speaker 2: this all the time, and I watched you know, various
- 17:42Speaker 2: versions of him. He came back, and the best version
- 17:45Speaker 2: was it was what it way. He was a singles hitter,
- 17:49Speaker 2: but he was getting on base and the defense was okay.
- 17:54Speaker 2: The arm looked a little, you know, it was passable,
- 17:58Speaker 2: but he was in there and he was contribute. But
- 18:00Speaker 2: for the most part, you know, just a shell of
- 18:02Speaker 2: the player he was for the Nationals, and I know
- 18:05Speaker 2: that's not what he wanted. I don't want to be
- 18:07Speaker 2: too hard on him, but I think it was also
- 18:09Speaker 2: tough because he was so averse to communicating with the media.
- 18:15Speaker 2: You know, various instances, you know, hostile, and that could
- 18:19Speaker 2: just be him, but I think he fell short in
- 18:22Speaker 2: that role or as a player. It's it's part of
- 18:25Speaker 2: the deal. You know, you have a great game, you
- 18:27Speaker 2: post it your locker and it's easy. And likewise, on
- 18:30Speaker 2: the flip side, you know, sometimes you got to be
- 18:32Speaker 2: accountable and you got to give an explanation, even if
- 18:34Speaker 2: it's not a topic you love, and he didn't do
- 18:37Speaker 2: much of that. So I think his memories are going
- 18:40Speaker 2: to be, you know, maybe the cast fighting. You know,
- 18:44Speaker 2: they get into a brawl one time, and then Oakland
- 18:46Speaker 2: Fan and some other things. And it's unfortunate because I
- 18:49Speaker 2: have heard that, you know, as a teammate, he does
- 18:51Speaker 2: do a very nice job. But for fans that are watching,
- 18:54Speaker 2: you don't. You can't really make sense of you know,
- 18:57Speaker 2: what he's about or what he's trying to do.
- 19:00Speaker 5: All right, Mark, by the way, you had, you had
- 19:01Speaker 5: an unbelievable career. You had, You had a great career.
- 19:04Speaker 5: You made a lot of money. But I have to
- 19:05Speaker 5: bring up one story with you, and you might not
- 19:07Speaker 5: even remember this, but I remember this story and it's
- 19:10Speaker 5: the only time in my career that this play actually worked.
- 19:13Speaker 5: You were on third and it was first and third,
- 19:15Speaker 5: and you guys tried the old double steel trick and
- 19:17Speaker 5: I did the old pump fake the second and you
- 19:20Speaker 5: actually broke And the only time in my long career
- 19:23Speaker 5: that it actually worked. You were trying to steal home
- 19:26Speaker 5: on the old first and third double steal with two
- 19:28Speaker 5: outs trick, and I did the pump fakes. So you
- 19:31Speaker 5: don't even remember this because you were like, why am
- 19:33Speaker 5: I trying to steal home. But for me, it was
- 19:35Speaker 5: like the greatest moment of my life because I did
- 19:37Speaker 5: the pump fake and you broke and we got you out,
- 19:40Speaker 5: and I'm like, I can't believe somebody fell for it.
- 19:42Speaker 4: So thank you. I'm just saying thank you because it was. Yeah.
- 19:45Speaker 4: I know, it's okay. You probably are like, what the
- 19:48Speaker 4: hell is he talking about?
- 19:48Speaker 2: But to me, it meant I think I think everybody
- 19:51Speaker 2: should experience as much as you can in the game.
- 19:53Speaker 2: And the fact that I was able to, I mean,
- 19:56Speaker 2: how many times did you probably practice that, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 2: throughout your.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Wa all the time?
- 19:59Speaker 5: Man, That's what I'm saying. How many times in spring
- 20:01Speaker 5: training do you do the old pump fake? This is
- 20:03Speaker 5: never gonna freaking work. And then the one time it worked,
- 20:06Speaker 5: I was like, Wow, that actually did happen.
- 20:09Speaker 2: There are not many base running highlights. There are plenty
- 20:12Speaker 2: of low lights, but I thank you for reminding me.
- 20:16Speaker 2: One thing I briefly was laughing about earlier was first
- 20:20Speaker 2: got called up. We were playing you guys and playing
- 20:23Speaker 2: first base in Anaheim, and I heard somebody I was
- 20:27Speaker 2: playing and sure, yeah, I was nervous. But what really
- 20:32Speaker 2: helped was your manager at the time Assie had gone
- 20:35Speaker 2: all the way down to the end of the dugout
- 20:37Speaker 2: and was yelling at me, cat calling me, you know,
- 20:40Speaker 2: shaking visibly with his hands, saying I was nervous and
- 20:44Speaker 2: I was going to make an error, and I was like,
- 20:47Speaker 2: what in the world is this? And then I think
- 20:49Speaker 2: he took him at Hank Conger pretended he had a grenade.
- 20:53Speaker 2: I think he was talking about his throwing arm, and
- 20:57Speaker 2: you know, it was good fun. I think Hank and
- 21:00Speaker 2: his defense did throw out viscl who might have been
- 21:02Speaker 2: on the wrong side of forty by that point, but
- 21:05Speaker 2: you know it, I had a good time with that.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And it kind of was like, Okay, you know this
- 21:10Speaker 2: is a serious thing up here, but guys do still
- 21:13Speaker 2: have some fun, and you know they're going to give
- 21:15Speaker 2: it to you, so you better be able to take it.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:17Speaker 5: It just it just got you ready for, you know,
- 21:21Speaker 5: visiting fans to get on, because even get on.
- 21:23Speaker 4: No manager does that anymore.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Oh no, God, managers sit there like this. Then they
- 21:26Speaker 5: look they look at their paper all the time. Every
- 21:28Speaker 5: every manager is like, do you think can't show anyone?
- 21:33Speaker 5: I want to know what's on the paper, conch coach.
- 21:35Speaker 1: They looked at you don't want to even look at Meanwhile, Oz,
- 21:38Speaker 1: he's like, hey Trumbo, you saw Trumbo.
- 21:41Speaker 4: You're nervous.
- 21:42Speaker 5: They probably called you by the wrong name too. He's
- 21:44Speaker 5: probably like, hey, Trumpet Tumbo.
- 21:48Speaker 2: It got the point across. I was going to pretend
- 21:51Speaker 2: they try and do the accent, but I don't think
- 21:53Speaker 2: anyone wants to really see that. Uh But you know,
- 21:56Speaker 2: at first, I was like, you know, I looked over
- 21:59Speaker 2: and he was staring dead at me. So I'm like, Okay,
- 22:02Speaker 2: this is obviously coming my way. You nervous, you know,
- 22:05Speaker 2: And I was like, well, yeah I am, but you know,
- 22:09Speaker 2: uh so, And I think that might have been I
- 22:12Speaker 2: don't know if it was my first start, but it
- 22:14Speaker 2: could have been so welcome into the show.
- 22:17Speaker 4: You probably homered off of us later. No, like every
- 22:20Speaker 4: guy I was lucky to get.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I mean, maybe you know the following season that that
- 22:26Speaker 2: first call up, I was lucky to get hit on
- 22:28Speaker 2: my very last bat. It was one for fifteen or something,
- 22:31Speaker 2: so I didn't you know, you never know if there's
- 22:33Speaker 2: going to be another opportunity. So I think that that
- 22:35Speaker 2: memory stands out in Texas. You know, I think the
- 22:39Speaker 2: game had gotten away from them. At that point. But
- 22:41Speaker 2: I was lucky enough to have it that worked, I think.
- 22:45Speaker 1: But then the next season twenty nine homers, the next
- 22:47Speaker 1: season thirty two homers, the next season thirty four homers.
- 22:49Speaker 4: I think it worked out.
- 22:50Speaker 1: You figured it out, got you got unnervous, ohs plus is.
- 22:53Speaker 2: But well, well let's stay on the yeah, on the
- 22:55Speaker 2: offense and stuff.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Don't look will we'll keep hammering that. Hey, we're excited
- 23:00Speaker 1: about the show. We'll be listening. Welcome to the FT fan.
