- 0:46This is Madeline Ashley with Becker CFO and
- 0:48Revenue Cycle podcast, and I'm excited to have
- 0:51Andy Zukowski,
- 0:52CFO of ECU Health in Greenville, North Carolina,
- 0:55on the podcast with me. Andy, it's great
- 0:57to have you back, and happy New Year.
- 1:00Happy New Year to you as well, Madeline.
- 1:02So excited to chat again with you today.
- 1:05But before we kick things off for maybe
- 1:07some of our listeners who haven't had a
- 1:08chance to catch one of our older episodes,
- 1:10do you mind just sharing a little bit
- 1:12about yourself,
- 1:13and more about ECU Health?
- 1:15Absolutely. I'd be happy to.
- 1:17So I serve as the chief financial officer
- 1:19for ECU Health in the Brody School of
- 1:21Medicine at East Carolina
- 1:22University.
- 1:24We are a rural academic safety net health
- 1:27system serving well over a million residents in
- 1:3029 counties across Eastern North Carolina.
- 1:33Wonderful.
- 1:34Thank you so much for that little, intro
- 1:36there. So, Andy, you know, I know we've
- 1:39talked about just everything going on in the
- 1:40industry. Every time we talk, there's something new
- 1:43happening. But as we enter the new year,
- 1:452026,
- 1:46what financial trends or shifts are you keeping,
- 1:49a watchful eye on, and and why are
- 1:51you following these so closely?
- 1:54Yeah.
- 1:55Cost of care is an essential metric to
- 1:57watch as we ensure financial sustainability,
- 2:01especially as we transform
- 2:02models of care
- 2:03within this environment of significant pressure,
- 2:07for as it relates to reimbursements
- 2:09going down.
- 2:10And specifically from a rural health and safety
- 2:13net provider perspective,
- 2:15you know, this time of significant uncertainty due,
- 2:18we have Medicaid rate challenges within the state
- 2:20of North Carolina along with the federal policy
- 2:23changes.
- 2:24Specifically, the state faces a shortfall in their
- 2:27budget to fund
- 2:28a 10% provider based payment rate reduction.
- 2:32And so while this is separate from the
- 2:34federal cuts, it could accelerate projections
- 2:37projected reductions from the one big beautiful bill
- 2:39starting in October
- 2:412027.
- 2:42Mhmm. So these two policy changes combined will
- 2:44make delivering rural healthcare more difficult and requires
- 2:48us to prepare now by rethinking these traditional
- 2:50models of care,
- 2:52as it relates to rural health access and
- 2:54the cost of care.
- 2:56At the same time, we're focused on partnering
- 2:57with the state, federal lawmakers to find solutions,
- 3:02including opening the first
- 3:04rural emergency hospital in the state of North
- 3:06Carolina
- 3:07to ensure that rural communities have access to
- 3:09quality care they deserve.
- 3:11So it's important to note as we're focused
- 3:13on all this, we're committed, deeply committed to
- 3:15being the solution to this problem,
- 3:18but to focus on and not limit to
- 3:20collaboration
- 3:20with everybody, all the decision makers
- 3:23as we look at the rural health realities
- 3:26across Eastern North Carolina.
- 3:28Mhmm. And we're also seeing a lot of
- 3:30movement just in terms of, like, the the
- 3:32world transformation
- 3:34funds and and kind of how are you
- 3:35and your team keeping keeping up with all
- 3:37of that there?
- 3:38So we're actively engaged and involved,
- 3:41in
- 3:42in understanding
- 3:44what that will look like. It's gonna be
- 3:46really critical that the rural health funds get
- 3:49to the rural health care providers,
- 3:51and so that's what we're most focused on
- 3:53at this point.
- 3:54Yeah.
- 3:55Any lessons learned for you just over the
- 3:57like, since the last time we talked even,
- 4:00you know, again, so much change going on.
- 4:02I'm sure this is helping many,
- 4:04system leaders, you know, grow,
- 4:07in their roles. How about you? How are
- 4:08you feeling?
- 4:10Yeah. I think the, you know, the one
- 4:12lesson learned that I'm thinking about
- 4:15carrying from last year to this year is
- 4:17really to maintain focus
- 4:19on continue to focus on our people and
- 4:21our patients and more importantly, in support of
- 4:23that, our multiyear strategic agenda.
- 4:26Yeah. It's critical for us to successfully
- 4:29lead and navigate through,
- 4:31this this level of uncertainty and change that's
- 4:34going on.
- 4:35Mhmm.
- 4:36Could you kinda switch gears a little bit
- 4:37and talk more about some of the smart
- 4:39growth that you're seeing at ECU,
- 4:41this year, maybe in the in 2027?
- 4:45Yeah. I think in terms of smart growth,
- 4:47it all starts with for us access
- 4:50Yeah. And,
- 4:52the total patient experience.
- 4:55Critically important to drive growth for us to
- 4:58to achieve many of the growth objectives that
- 5:00we have to serve additional patients.
- 5:03Mhmm.
- 5:04Could you dive a little deeper into some
- 5:05some of those objectives?
- 5:09Can you clarify that, Madeline, and start? Of
- 5:11course. No. Yeah. Just just in terms of
- 5:13I know you touched on that that's type
- 5:14of smart growth. I mean, maybe in your
- 5:17opinion, what would be
- 5:19the best thing for ECU Health over the
- 5:20next even two to two to three years?
- 5:24Some projects maybe down the line, anything that
- 5:25you could just dive a little deeper into.
- 5:27Yeah. So, you know, we're we're investing in,
- 5:30physical capacity. So we have within one of
- 5:33our facilities, we'll be finishing off two floors
- 5:36that we had shelved years ago.
- 5:38And so that will allow us to grow
- 5:40key service lines of growth. In addition to
- 5:42that,
- 5:43inventory surgery expansion
- 5:45as well as other investments
- 5:48to create capacity and access for patients.
- 5:51At the same time, we're investing in technology
- 5:54to improve
- 5:55as it relates to that front end experience,
- 5:58to get access timely access to our physicians
- 6:02Mhmm. As well as as we think about
- 6:04the patient experience,
- 6:06starting with the financial
- 6:08the front end experience to register from the
- 6:10financial experience to the clinical experience and beyond
- 6:13to ensure that we have,
- 6:16really met the needs of our patients entirely.
- 6:19Yeah. And, you know, kind of on the
- 6:20same vein of lessons learned,
- 6:23what are some leadership mindsets
- 6:26that you think will be most important for
- 6:27CFOs as they navigate
- 6:29industry challenges and uncertainties this year?
- 6:32Yeah. From my perspective, growth mindset is critical
- 6:35along with continued focus on fundamentals. This is
- 6:39all just to ensure that we can link
- 6:40through change
- 6:41and not get distracted by,
- 6:44the news of the day or the issue
- 6:46at hand. It's critical that we think long
- 6:48term
- 6:49and at the same time, focus on those
- 6:51fundamentals.
- 6:53Definitely.
- 6:54Well, Andy, as always, it has been such
- 6:56a pleasure getting to speak with you, and
- 6:58I truly look forward to connecting with you
- 7:00again down the line.
- 7:02Absolutely, Madeline. Thank you so much. Thank you.
