- 0:36Welcome back to Rick and Elaine discuss the Bible
- 0:39and in particular the book of Job. How are you
- 0:42Elaine Rae Clark? I am very well. Thank you very
- 0:45much You're looking rather handsome in your blue
- 0:46there with your little cap on with your glasses
- 0:48looking very intelligent I must say. A tip of
- 0:51the hat to you my lady. That's very good. In
- 0:54England we would say we're doffing. Okay, I'm
- 0:59doffing my cap to you my lady. How is it in the
- 1:03afternoon Sun of Spain today? It is absolutely
- 1:07wonderful. They've got a few Simpson clouds,
- 1:09as I like to call them. But yeah, it's lovely.
- 1:12It's quite hot. But you know, there's, I mean,
- 1:14I, you know, all these chemtrails in the sky.
- 1:16We see there's quite a, quite a haze. I'm not
- 1:19laughing at you. I'm laughing with you. There's
- 1:21a lot of people that I talked to about this.
- 1:22I've been talking about chemtrails for 22 years.
- 1:24And now all of a sudden people think that they
- 1:27found chemtrails. You think to yourself, my gosh,
- 1:29I've forgotten all about that. But again, when
- 1:32you look at the haze, it's like there's sort
- 1:33of some kind of ground. It's very, very, very
- 1:36fine powdery stuff that the sun is reflecting
- 1:39off of. It could be aluminium particles, it could
- 1:42be glass particles, but it's a burny. It's a
- 1:45burny sun. Yeah. Well, I can tell you're so English
- 1:49because you say aluminium when we say aluminum
- 1:52here. Oh, right. Yes, yes. Well, I think we gave
- 1:56you the language, so I mean... We just ruined
- 2:01it over here. Well, you've got to have something
- 2:04of your own. I'd say the only thing that's come
- 2:06over here from you is like dispensationalism.
- 2:10Yes. No, hey, you guys brought you. You brought
- 2:15a lot of stuff over here. So this last. So after
- 2:20our week off, we put that study out that came
- 2:23out this past Tuesday and we got some comments.
- 2:26And but I wanted to say this up front as we get
- 2:29into this study. Hang on. Just turn the air con
- 2:32off. She's going to turn the air con off. How
- 2:36do you like that? Deena. Just going to turn the
- 2:39air con off. Yeah. Deena, she turned the air
- 2:41con off. All right. So off. Off. So, um, I'm
- 2:46doffing you, my lady. So I had, um, my brain
- 2:52can only handle so much information. Just so
- 2:55everybody knows I'm a very leaky vessel. That's
- 2:58what I like to say anyway. A colander. Yeah,
- 3:00I'm a very leaky vessel and I have a tremendous
- 3:03amount of information coming in and going out
- 3:05because I'm a content creator, because I'm involved
- 3:08in the revelation study. I'm working on the job
- 3:10study. Elaine and I are talking about things
- 3:13that are going to come out next week that this
- 3:16morning. That's just even more like there's so
- 3:18much information. Plus I did an interview, which
- 3:20I put it on Patreon with. I was interviewed by
- 3:25a man by the name of Q Clinton. In his Bible
- 3:28study group and so I was there was a lot of information
- 3:31there that I was answering to. Then I say that
- 3:35because in our last study I did that little misdirection
- 3:39I said okay we I wanted you to read twenty two
- 3:41and twenty three. And then at the end I sprung
- 3:45on you oh but job's not done let's do twenty
- 3:47four right because I really wanted to hone in
- 3:49on the idea that Ella faz had said everything
- 3:52you needed to say and job didn't respond he wasn't
- 3:56responding directly to him he's responding like
- 4:00I said he turned his head and he looked up or
- 4:02whatever I wanted to point that out because he's.
- 4:05He literally is shutting elifaz down but it's
- 4:08not anymore is a bright any shutting him down
- 4:11in this unique way and we does that it's going
- 4:14to affect bill dad and i wanted you guys. It's
- 4:18hard for me to keep all this stuff together okay
- 4:20just is but we got a job. Well thank you but
- 4:25we're gonna slow way down in chapter twenty four
- 4:27and then do twenty five today but and there's
- 4:30a lot to cover and i don't know if we'll get
- 4:31it all hopefully we can i thought you was being
- 4:34a bit sort of optimistic twenty four to twenty
- 4:36seven. Well i wanted to read the twenty seven
- 4:39i'm not gonna do it all yeah yeah yeah if you
- 4:42read it all the way to twenty seven that's great
- 4:43cuz job wasn't even done talking when you get
- 4:45to twenty seven by the way so but alright. Let's
- 4:49read the comments because alan thompson. Asked
- 4:53or mentioned some things and kind of asked a
- 4:55question We have two comments and they're really
- 4:58good comments today He says glad to have the
- 5:02both of you back. This is Alan Thompson. Hi,
- 5:05Ellen. I Missed my rock star friends last week.
- 5:08We missed you guys Great episode with insightful
- 5:12discussion Beautiful reading as usual take that
- 5:16part. Please bless you Alan. I always think it
- 5:18sounds awful Yeah it's not it's wonderful and
- 5:22a good homework assignment which is what i left
- 5:24can we prove job wrong and what did you say about
- 5:27god that we're gonna bring up today. When elaine
- 5:30was reading chapter twenty three verses eleven
- 5:33and twelve in particular i was captivated with
- 5:37the thought question. It hounded me for the rest
- 5:40of the episode until I heard the comment that
- 5:43it's possible that Solomon wrote this looking
- 5:45backwards. I'm so glad you picked up on that
- 5:48Alan because so did I. So if you would like to
- 5:50add some thoughts on chapter 23 verse 11 and
- 5:5412 I would love to hear them. What struck me
- 5:57was Job's declaration that he hasn't departed
- 5:59from the quote command of his lips and that he
- 6:03has quote treasured the words of his mouth. It
- 6:06sounds a lot like David. How can Job say that
- 6:09if he is living during the patriarchal period
- 6:12and the law has not yet been given? Again, the
- 6:16Solomon comment was intriguing. Love y 'all.
- 6:19And we love you too, Alan. Absolutely. So would
- 6:23you mind reading chapter 23 verse 11 and 12?
- 6:26Let's give everybody context here because I want
- 6:28to tackle this. I did respond on Patreon and
- 6:31I'll read my response, but we'll get into it.
- 6:34Right. It says, my feet have stayed in his footsteps.
- 6:38I keep to his ways without turning aside. I don't
- 6:41withdraw from his lips commands. I treasure his
- 6:45words more than my daily food. That's so good.
- 6:49And you're right to get stuck on that. So did
- 6:51I. I started hearing, that's why I've been saying
- 6:53during the study that I believe that this was
- 6:56written post David, post Solomon and being put
- 7:00back in time. It's a cool way of writing. We
- 7:03do it in American culture all the time. I was
- 7:06just introduced to the show called Peaky Blinders.
- 7:09I didn't know anything about the Peaky Blinders.
- 7:11And so I was like, yeah. Yeah, Peaky Blinders,
- 7:15little raises in their caps. Raises in their
- 7:17caps and stuff. I had no idea. But we, modern
- 7:20America, have this obsession with this old story
- 7:23from Britain from 1919 until, you know, the Second
- 7:26World War. We're very interested in it. And so
- 7:28we write these stories, but we also have like
- 7:31modern day morality that we live from. Right.
- 7:33So like that's it's it's just a way of writing
- 7:36stories. And so I've begun to see it. But there
- 7:39are some verses in the scripture that will kind
- 7:42of blow your mind. OK. Can I just one question?
- 7:45So are you are you are you thinking this is written
- 7:48after the law was given around Solomon's time
- 7:51or after Solomon? between Solomon and, you know,
- 7:57when Israel was taken captive by Assyria. I think
- 8:01it's possibly, I think it's possibly right after
- 8:08Assyria. I think that it's, wisdom, literature,
- 8:11it can't be Solomon. Solomon's gone. I said it
- 8:13was probably during the split of the kingdom.
- 8:16Because if you think about the position that
- 8:18Job is in, how Job is decimated, well, northern
- 8:23israel was decimated right and so then the judaites
- 8:26were left in the bottom and then they're gonna
- 8:28there's some time i think it's like 150 years
- 8:31before nebuchadnezzar and the babylonians come
- 8:33in and siege jerusalem and during jeremiah's
- 8:35time all of the things that they would be thinking
- 8:38in their mind even post exile after it's been
- 8:41destroyed like how god will bring it back up
- 8:43this is it's a constant story we see it's always
- 8:46happening it's recurring over and over it is
- 8:48You're up, then you're destroyed, then you're
- 8:50brought up, and then you're destroyed, and you're
- 8:52brought up. Well, like he says, I lift nations
- 8:54up and I tear them down. Yes. I lift nations
- 8:57up and I tear them down. Yes. I'm going to read
- 9:01my response back to him. I put it here in the
- 9:04comments so that I could remember to say it.
- 9:05Can I just say, I don't ever get to see the comments
- 9:08because I've lost my Apple ID password and I
- 9:13can't get into the comments. So this is why Rick.
- 9:15We'll read them out to me or lot yeah yeah I
- 9:19can't even comment back so yeah I should have
- 9:22sent them to you but my brain I can't I don't
- 9:24have time I'm just running around. I just wanted
- 9:28them to know it wasn't cuz I was lazy is cuz
- 9:30I've lost my that's what I said I've taken technology
- 9:33useless. Well, I just I just want to we're gonna
- 9:36read the comments anyway, we're gonna read the
- 9:38questions anyway We're gonna talk about it even
- 9:39if it interrupts the study some because it's
- 9:41important I think absolutely something happens
- 9:43in your mind and you're thinking about it. Let's
- 9:45talk about it So absolutely while I'm talking
- 9:48about this Elaine, would you turn to Genesis
- 9:50chapter 18? And then also like get ready for
- 9:54Genesis chapter 26 And so chapter 18 first and
- 9:59chapter 26 and here's what I'm gonna say. I'm
- 10:00gonna say first of all great catch And that's
- 10:04the kind of thing that makes you so say, like,
- 10:06wait a minute. Right. Joe, really, Job sounds
- 10:10like David or Solomon or somebody like it does
- 10:12sound like that language. And we find that kind
- 10:14of stuff in Psalm one, Psalm 19, Psalm 119. Go
- 10:18ahead. Don't you find as well that because it's
- 10:21sort of a reiteration of other stuff, isn't it?
- 10:25Again, yes, we know that it could be projecting
- 10:27forward or backwards. We know we do understand
- 10:29that. But is that not just people coming to a
- 10:34realization of God, having a relationship with
- 10:36or becoming aware of Him, more aware of Him,
- 10:39that this is what you start to question and that
- 10:42you start to see. So basically we all, when we
- 10:46start to get that relationship with God, end
- 10:49up having these kinds of comments which these
- 10:51ones are having. And I think that that's true,
- 10:54but here's what the big question is about the
- 10:58word commands. These kinds of things like what
- 11:00commands is he talking about? Like, he doesn't
- 11:04have the law. So what did the patriarchal period
- 11:07actually have? What had been passed down? What
- 11:10were those commands? In Genesis chapter 18 verse
- 11:1319, listen to what it says about Abraham. Would
- 11:18you read that? Yep. For I have made myself known
- 11:23to him so that he will give orders to his children
- 11:27and to his household after him to keep the way
- 11:29of Adonai. and to do what is right and just,
- 11:33so that Adonai may bring about for Abraham what
- 11:36he has promised him." Okay, so God's made this
- 11:40promise to Abraham, but he's also put these orders.
- 11:44That word orders is the same as our word commands
- 11:47that we hear, like these commandments or these
- 11:49commands to him. So he has brought this to him
- 11:53so that he can keep the way. That's interesting,
- 11:55because that's what Job said earlier, right?
- 11:58Walking in his ways? Right. So this is like,
- 12:02how did Job know that? But then again, you've
- 12:04got to remember where it says, I have made myself
- 12:06known to him so that he will give orders. Well,
- 12:10the law didn't come along for another 400 and
- 12:12odd years. That's exactly right. But he makes
- 12:14himself known. It must have been sort of some
- 12:17sort of verbal pass down. That's right. This
- 12:21was written hundreds of years before we had the
- 12:24law. They had the law. So it says there, I have.
- 12:28I have made myself known to him so that he will
- 12:33give orders to his children. But again, you talk
- 12:36about orders, but again, the law wasn't given.
- 12:38I mean, they were in captivity for 430 years
- 12:41until the fullness of the sins of the Amalekites,
- 12:45I think it was, had come to fruition. So therefore,
- 12:48you had to have them go in in Joseph's time,
- 12:51but Abraham was like two or three generations
- 12:54before that. So you're looking at 500 years,
- 12:57Rick. before they were given them. So they must
- 12:59have had something that was different to something
- 13:04written. The fact that it says there, I have
- 13:09made myself known to him. You know, I have made
- 13:13myself known to him so that he will give orders
- 13:16to his children and to his household after him
- 13:18to keep the way of Adonai and to do what is right
- 13:20and just. So therefore there must have been some
- 13:22sort of communication. Some sort of maybe we're
- 13:25not privy to it, but in texts like these we assume
- 13:29Because it's not explicit. It's implicit. We
- 13:32just think to ourselves Well, we have to make
- 13:34the assumption that there was more of a rapport
- 13:36going on between Abraham and God than we are
- 13:38privy to Right. Okay. Well, then I'm saying go
- 13:43to Genesis chapter 26 Genesis chapter 26 and
- 13:47read verse 5 Genesis 26 verse 5 26 Verse five.
- 13:58All this is because Abraham heeded what I said
- 14:01and did what I told him to do. He followed my
- 14:05mitzvah, my law, my regulations and my teachings.
- 14:09It doesn't really say anything about being written
- 14:12down. He followed my law, my regulations and
- 14:15my teachings. Abraham heeded what I said and
- 14:20did what I told him. Again, I mean, I don't want
- 14:23to be devil's advocate here, but I'm probably
- 14:24playing him. I'm just thinking to myself, you
- 14:27know, was it something that was given to Abraham
- 14:29simply because Abraham was the start of the people
- 14:34that God says, I'm going to call these people
- 14:36mine. You can have the other nations and put
- 14:38these other fallen angels over them. But this
- 14:40is this is where I start with. So yes. Wouldn't
- 14:43it have been good to have given Abraham maybe
- 14:45verbal chats with him? Maybe. But we're not privy
- 14:50to it. So for me, the fact that he says that
- 14:54he gave him orders and commands and regulations,
- 14:56but it wasn't written down at that time, if you're
- 14:59going to the law. So therefore, we've got to
- 15:02say it doesn't necessarily follow that there
- 15:04had to be a written law. It could have been passed
- 15:07down through these other people that Abraham
- 15:10had meetings with, you know, during those 480
- 15:16years, 500 years, because it would have been
- 15:18something like that from Abraham. to Joseph,
- 15:22and then when they didn't know who Joseph was,
- 15:24they did, but they didn't take any notice, then
- 15:26there was 430 years of slavery. So you look at
- 15:29500 years, say, of regulations and ordinances
- 15:34and stuff like that being passed down. And it
- 15:36must have just been following in his footsteps
- 15:38because we didn't have any, well, the Jews didn't
- 15:41have any at that time, Israel. But because of
- 15:44that, again, I'm just bringing that up. as something
- 15:47that maybe you're not thought of because there's
- 15:50nothing there that says anything was written
- 15:52down. It says I have with my lips, I've followed
- 15:56in your footsteps. Here it says all this because
- 15:59Abraham, he did what I said and what I told him.
- 16:03Look, I 1 billion percent agree. I'm not even
- 16:08saying that it's written. That's not even what
- 16:09I'm saying. Here's what I'm saying. Job Is most
- 16:14likely a descendant. We've talked about this
- 16:16somehow to Abraham these words, even though he's
- 16:19not in the covenant line. He's not job is not
- 16:23in the covenant line. You cannot get him in it.
- 16:25It doesn't work. So because of that, he still
- 16:28has this oral law about El Shaddai, whatever
- 16:32this is, whatever these statutes are, these commands
- 16:35are, and by the way, a lot of the things that
- 16:37show up in the law are What job is talking about
- 16:41in chapter 24 he actually talks about the things
- 16:44that are in the law So this stuff has been passed
- 16:47down and by the way his friends know it to his
- 16:50friend Eliphaz has just had it in chapter 22
- 16:54He's telling him he's accusing him falsely of
- 16:58breaking God's oral law and they're absolutely
- 17:01that's why it's happening in their reality. So
- 17:03yeah in this world wherever this ancient world
- 17:06is whether it's actually happening and we're
- 17:09got a story recorded at his time or if it's written
- 17:11during the time of moses or if it's later it's
- 17:14written during the time of solomon it doesn't
- 17:16matter because it's pointing back to this place
- 17:20excuse me pointing back to this place talking
- 17:23about god's oral laws and him dealing with people
- 17:27so i don't know honestly I don't know. So basically
- 17:31we don't really, it doesn't really matter whether
- 17:33it was after Solomon, before Solomon, before
- 17:35Abraham even. That's my point. Yes. That's my
- 17:39point is that, but it also means something that
- 17:41I've been trying to say over and over is that
- 17:44God is dealing with a man outside of the covenant
- 17:48line. 100%. And this is where I would say to
- 17:52those who hold to the Israel only, View and if
- 17:57you're not familiar with that, it's to me. It's
- 17:59a horrific doctrine The Israel only view states
- 18:03that it's the northern tribes that are the Gentiles
- 18:06and that it wasn't for anyone outside of Israel
- 18:09that everything that happened was only for Israel
- 18:12And this is why I'm trying to point this out
- 18:14here in Job. That's not the case This is long
- 18:18ago long ago, but if it was written during the
- 18:22time of the first You know taking away of the
- 18:26kingdom of israel or after the the exile of juda
- 18:29or whatever It doesn't before they're pointing
- 18:32out that back then El Shaddai was communicating
- 18:37To people and he was giving them his law now.
- 18:43It's not written but it's oral it's it's who
- 18:46he is and when they relate to him they know what
- 18:49he expects and what especially in dealing with
- 18:52people side to side exactly and we and we know
- 18:55that already because we've got chapters one and
- 18:57two it tells how god feels about joe it tells
- 19:01us that god joe because it have you seen that
- 19:03there's nobody like him on all the earth well
- 19:05hang on a minute on all the earth right that
- 19:08means even over the covenant people even over
- 19:11the covenant people yes That's what I'm saying.
- 19:14All the earth. If we're going to talk about a
- 19:16particular land or the whole of the ancient Levant
- 19:18or whatever it is, Job was more righteous than
- 19:22the rest. Well, that's what I was saying. It's
- 19:24always been about faith. You know, by faith,
- 19:27Rahab, by faith, Abraham, by faith, by faith,
- 19:31by faith, by faith, by faith, by faith. And it's
- 19:34it's always been. And funny enough, if you look
- 19:36at it, a lot of it's a lot of those by faith
- 19:39are those ones that sort of um he sort of like
- 19:42names prior before sort of the covenant is given
- 19:45really it's quite strange he sort of goes to
- 19:47them and he says and i haven't got time to mention
- 19:49these ones and he goes on to the others um so
- 19:52yeah it's it's always been about faith it's always
- 19:55been about faith you know like we're saying about
- 19:57the widow's might you know nobody took any notice
- 20:00of her nobody cared about her and yet she had
- 20:03so much faith that she was willing to give our
- 20:05last coin to small value. I'm so glad that you
- 20:08said that word faith. I'm so glad. Later on,
- 20:10Jesus will say, you've forgotten, you'll give
- 20:13a tenth of your mint dealing cumin, but you forgot
- 20:15the more weightier part, which is justice, mercy,
- 20:18and faithfulness. That's exactly correct. So
- 20:22what Job is saying, Job is saying in chapter
- 20:2523 is that he is 23 and 24, really, but in 23,
- 20:29he's operating in faith. He is one operating
- 20:33in faith guys, and then you've got these guys
- 20:36over here who are operating by the written code
- 20:39Whatever there and it's written in their hearts.
- 20:41It's written in their minds. It's not real. It's
- 20:43a system It's a system that they've adopted.
- 20:46Yes external rather than internal that's it that's
- 20:51it by the way yes, it is and It's whatever's
- 20:56happening in it happening in Job's external world
- 20:58that they're judging which is the external That's
- 21:01right. They're missing it. They're missing it
- 21:02and because of their lack of compassion and empathy
- 21:05and Faithfulness, they can't understand what
- 21:07job actually is going through therefore. They
- 21:10can't even understand the relationship That's
- 21:12developing between exactly else. Did I was it
- 21:15last week, you know In Job's sort of suffering
- 21:18and Job's sort of reasoning and listening to
- 21:20what they're saying, and then coming to his own
- 21:22conclusions, as he's mulling over all these things
- 21:25that have been said, his own things, his walls
- 21:27now of partitioning God off into his little neat
- 21:31box are starting to open up, where because the
- 21:35others are seeing them open up. And like you
- 21:37said, he's almost like looking away from them
- 21:39now. They are getting smaller. Their boxes getting
- 21:43smaller because now they're becoming a little
- 21:45bit more angry. They're becoming more personal.
- 21:48Yes, they are. It's got nothing to do with internal.
- 21:50In fact, they're becoming more dark as Job is
- 21:54becoming more light. Very good. And this is why
- 21:59I wanted to slow down. And Elaine, you are brilliant.
- 22:01I love how you... By the way, Elaine and I haven't
- 22:03even discussed this. Elaine is like two steps
- 22:06ahead of me. She's always like two steps. This
- 22:08is beautiful. I love it. So I'm glad you said
- 22:11it that way. We work as a team. We do but in
- 22:13this argument guys and I'm gonna work I'm gonna
- 22:15get back to the comments because we have one
- 22:16more from Tony But I wanted to say this to you
- 22:19Alan. I'm glad you picked up on that I'm glad
- 22:20that you saw it and the fact was when you heard
- 22:23commandments That's huge when he heard the word
- 22:25of his lips, you know, I followed the word of
- 22:27his lips. Yeah, that's oral That's communication.
- 22:30That's God that's talking to him. He's outside
- 22:32of the covenant. This is huge It's such a huge
- 22:35discovery for me. I just I was like what is going
- 22:38on? so What happens next after 24 is build that
- 22:43comes in and guys, I want you to pay particular
- 22:47attention to how short it is. It's so short because
- 22:51he literally shuts down Eliphaz. And when he
- 22:55does it, build that doesn't even discuss anything
- 22:59that Job says that you've got to see it because
- 23:03what build that does is what we see. I see it
- 23:06all the time. I like to call it virtue signaling.
- 23:10It's kind of weird in our world anyway, but we'll
- 23:13get to that here in a little while. I don't know
- 23:14if we'll get to it today, but I want you, if
- 23:17you guys read 24 through 27, I wanted you to
- 23:20particularly notice how short chapter 25 was.
- 23:23There's a reason for that. All right. So hello,
- 23:27Tony. Thank you for giving us a comment here.
- 23:29Hi, Tony. This homework really got me thinking
- 23:33when job says if it is not so who can prove me
- 23:36a liar It feels like he's inviting honest examination
- 23:39Not blind agreement. That's good. That's exactly
- 23:43what we want in life As regards God and faith
- 23:47in the scriptures. This is what we want. Yes,
- 23:50this is what we want when I look at the world
- 23:52today I still see what job is describing injustice
- 23:55people prospering in ways that don't seem right
- 23:58other suffering without clear reason Exactly.
- 24:02And getting away with it. Yeah, it really brings
- 24:04to mind there's nothing new under the sun. Yep.
- 24:07Very wise. Men are men are men are men. I'm talking
- 24:10about mankind. They are the same. They're feelings,
- 24:14they're emotions, they're envies, they're jealous.
- 24:16They're all the same. Right. Centuries come and
- 24:19go, but emotions don't change. That's right.
- 24:22So this is what Tony's answer was. That tells
- 24:25me Job wasn't lying. Very good. He was being
- 24:28honest about what he saw and experienced. Absolutely.
- 24:32Yeah. I think the challenge for us is how we
- 24:34respond. Do we become like the friends and try
- 24:36to explain everything or do we acknowledge what
- 24:40we see and still trust God through it? Very good.
- 24:43Really looking forward to digging into this more.
- 24:45Thank you, Tony. Guys, go over to Tony's channel.
- 24:49Go over to Tony's channel. She's written some
- 24:50more songs based on this portion of the study.
- 24:52It's really good. Yeah, they both dropped. Excellent.
- 24:55They're really good too, by the way. One of them
- 24:57is pretty hard rock. I don't know if you'll like
- 24:58that one, Elaine. No, probably not. You can't
- 25:03say anything like that until you try it. I think
- 25:06that is true. Just read that last bit, that last
- 25:09portion. Yeah, she said, I think the challenge
- 25:13for us is how we respond. Do we become like the
- 25:16friends and try to explain everything or do we
- 25:18acknowledge what we see and still trust God through
- 25:20it? I think that's the thing. Do we still trust
- 25:23God through it? And I think that's the whole
- 25:26point, isn't it? It's like we've said before,
- 25:28that God didn't take Job out of the suffering,
- 25:31but he was learning now that he should be relying
- 25:33on God to understand why he's suffering. And
- 25:36this is what God does. He takes us through our
- 25:38sufferings, and through our sufferings, we learn.
- 25:42This here is all about learning. And what is
- 25:45he learning? He's learning how not to respond
- 25:47like the three comforters. He's learning how
- 25:50it feels to be in this position and looked at
- 25:52like that. So it's a learning curve. And when
- 25:55he comes out the other side, you'd like to believe
- 25:57and think, which I obviously do, because God
- 25:59asked him to pray for the others, that he's learned
- 26:02about the reality of who God is as a character,
- 26:07as a personality, not a list of orders and following
- 26:12in your footsteps and that type of thing. But
- 26:14he becomes real and there's something starts
- 26:16to live in him that relationship. It's not just
- 26:20a reading of somebody. or knowing about somebody,
- 26:23you know, it's really having a relationship with
- 26:25him. And I think that's right, Tony, you know?
- 26:28Yes, I agree. God doesn't take away the situation
- 26:32that you're in, but he helps you endure it. All
- 26:35right. You're exactly right. And so I'm going
- 26:38to say this. It might sound a little weird. I'm
- 26:42apologizing up front if it sounds too weird.
- 26:44No, you are weird. I will rename. I love you.
- 26:50I will rename, I want to rename the book of Job.
- 26:53Are you ready? Go on. How to become a high priest
- 26:56of God. And that is, that is what I think is
- 27:00actually at the core of this book, guys. How
- 27:03to become a high priest of God. Because when
- 27:06you find out what happens to Job later in the
- 27:08book, it's going to make total sense. Yeah. But
- 27:11he had to go through this. all of this in order
- 27:14to know God and see. I want you to think about
- 27:17the relationships. Follow the relationships in
- 27:20this book. When you go to the front of the book,
- 27:23he's just being mentioned by God and the accuser
- 27:26knows him. They know what's up. But when you
- 27:28listen to the relationship that Job has with
- 27:30his family, he's doing sacrifices on behalf of
- 27:33them because perhaps they are thinking something
- 27:35in their heart. That means that the relationship,
- 27:38maybe they're not communicating. It doesn't matter.
- 27:39My point is that he was operating in that fashion.
- 27:42And then God takes everything away from him and
- 27:44then the relationship to his wife his wife immediately
- 27:47says Curse God and die. That's as far as she
- 27:50can go. The anguish and the pain and the suffering
- 27:53has stopped his bride from wanting to go any
- 27:55further. But he can't. He must go forward because
- 27:58he knows Shaddai and he loves Shaddai and he
- 28:01knows I've gotta keep going through this. And
- 28:03so he does. Then his three friends arrive and
- 28:06they sit with him for seven days and say nothing
- 28:08to him. And he's there in his thoughts between
- 28:11him and Shaddai and he's wrestling with his humanity.
- 28:14all of the things that are so hard for him. And
- 28:16then when he begins to open his mouth, it shocks
- 28:19his three friends. They do not like what he's
- 28:22come to understand. And so then they begin their
- 28:25arguments based on their worldly systems that
- 28:28they have built for themselves or have been taught
- 28:30in tradition by their families, whatever. But
- 28:33Job is being pressed like our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 28:37pressed into something new. He is being crushed
- 28:40so that this oil like you said the press of the
- 28:43oil will come out so as we watch this you're
- 28:46watching how a a priest is being brought into
- 28:50the state of like a high priest this is what's
- 28:52going on how do you really relate with god and
- 28:55then how do you relate to his people yeah and
- 28:57if you are the wisest and the most upright and
- 29:00you're also the richest if you are the most greatest
- 29:02man and all the east what's your relationship
- 29:06to god like how is that gonna work this is pointing
- 29:09to christ hugely pointing to Christ. But also,
- 29:12in my opinion, it's pointing to how Christ overcomes
- 29:16all of this world. And I don't mean just Israel.
- 29:19I mean it all. He overcomes all of it. So that's
- 29:23where we're heading, guys, going into chapter
- 29:2524. I think so. And it's interesting, really,
- 29:28that his wife says to him, curse God and die.
- 29:31Well, there's a curse there. Yes. And yet, through
- 29:34Job's faithfulness, which is what Adam should
- 29:38have been, which is the last Adam was. It's like,
- 29:41because Job was faithful, he still ends up having
- 29:44another 10 children with his wife. So it's like
- 29:48he overrode her and protected her because she
- 29:52was saying, let's curse. So again, it's a bit
- 29:54like the nation of Israel. You know, God says,
- 29:57you know, this is what will come upon you, the
- 29:59curse is the curses. But because Christ is a
- 30:01faithful husband, he's protecting her. Yes, and
- 30:05she can come back and have more children It's
- 30:09showing the path of resurrection. It's showing
- 30:11the path of restoration It's showing the path
- 30:14of whenever Israel fails and goes down even though
- 30:18Job hadn't failed It's showing you a story of
- 30:21how somebody is taken into the tomb and then
- 30:24comes out of the tomb in the newness of life
- 30:25and becomes the great high priest becomes The
- 30:29the all -in -all King he becomes everything That's
- 30:32what's really going on in this story. And by
- 30:34the way, it was put in the Tanakh for this very
- 30:35reason, to teach Israel. Absolutely. This is
- 30:38to teach Israel. And Israel is supposed to be
- 30:40the ones that are the light to this world, to
- 30:43this man. And that's the thing. This is another
- 30:46story of redemption, isn't it? It's another story
- 30:49of Christ, of the fall of mankind, of the bride,
- 30:54of the curse. of the redeeming factor of Job's
- 30:59faithfulness, and how he prays at the end, and
- 31:02how it all comes out wonderful and lovely, you
- 31:04know, like, happy ever after, which really, ultimately,
- 31:06Christ, as being the last Adam, actually took
- 31:09us out from under what Adam brought about. And
- 31:11that's what it's always been about. It's always
- 31:13going, you know, it's always going back to that.
- 31:15But these are stories in between time, real people
- 31:19living real lives, going through real situations
- 31:21and circumstances, but through it, learning so
- 31:24much. And through the learning, we have now the
- 31:27record written down so that we can see it. We
- 31:30can read it. Where do I fit in all this? Or where
- 31:33can I project that towards that so I can understand
- 31:37that a little bit better? You're frozen, have
- 31:38you? No, I'm still here. Oh, no, you're not.
- 31:41I'm frozen. I'm enraptured in your words. Oh,
- 31:44I should be enraptured by it. But again, it's
- 31:47this whole thing, isn't it? It's all going back
- 31:50to it. It's like a reflection of Hosea. You know
- 31:55that you've got to marry this one. She's no good.
- 31:57She's a whore. She's a prostitute. She's a, you
- 32:00know, but then he says, I'm going to speak, speak
- 32:02lovingly to her, you know, and woo her again.
- 32:05You know, it's, it's, it's, it's the whole thing
- 32:08is just story after story and why wouldn't the
- 32:14starring, uh, the role, uh, have the prominence
- 32:18throughout the whole, um, um, spectacle of, of
- 32:21redemption, the story, the film that we are part
- 32:24part of why shouldn't he have the greatest part
- 32:27ever that every single part just matches this
- 32:30one who came into time at that moment when it
- 32:32was appointed and and brought about something
- 32:36wonderful that we can all live in now that have
- 32:38faith and believe it's always been about faith
- 32:40it's not been about just turning up somewhere
- 32:42and going through the motions you know i've been
- 32:44going through that um uh the um we'll have to
- 32:48go through that as well about the uh the feast
- 32:50you know when they're invited That's really fascinating
- 32:54as well. It is, yes it is. The nation of Israel,
- 32:57you know, the time had come for the invited,
- 32:59you know, to turn up. And then he says go and
- 33:02invite. So you've got two categories. You've
- 33:04got ones that were already invited and ones that
- 33:06were going to get an invite. So, you know, who
- 33:09were the ones that were already invited in the
- 33:11nation of Israel? Well, they can't do this, can't
- 33:13do that kind of difference. It's just wonderful.
- 33:16Wonderful, wonderful. Yes it is. It is. And yeah,
- 33:20so. How to become a high priest. Well, sorry,
- 33:23I've gone off on a tangent. It's okay. How to
- 33:25become a high priest. Here's how you do it. Just
- 33:28watch Job. I want you to, I want you to, yeah,
- 33:30I've reeled you in. So I want you to look, okay.
- 33:32So in Job chapter 24 verse one, uh, he, he's
- 33:37why are not times of judgment kept by the almighty
- 33:39and why do those who know him never see his days?
- 33:42This is a, this is a question that a priest is
- 33:44going to ask. This is somebody that Watch this.
- 33:48He's not saying does God judge. He already knows
- 33:50that God judges. Okay. He's asking why is judgment
- 33:53not openly scheduled and publicly visible? He's
- 33:56really that this is what Eliphaz and his friends
- 33:59are saying is that this is this happens, right?
- 34:01God's justice is immediate. It is obvious. It
- 34:04is measurable. Well, then where are these supposed
- 34:07judgment days? That's what Job's asking, right?
- 34:10Yep. Times of judgment. times, appointed times,
- 34:14fixed seasons. He's asking those questions. We
- 34:16know that later on within the body of the Torah,
- 34:20that God gives them set feasts and appointed
- 34:22times and court dates. He does do that later
- 34:25on. He actually does do that, right? Okay. So
- 34:29him saying it that way literally attacks the
- 34:33logic of all three men. Job has just bound them
- 34:37up. He's done. And then he says, some move landmarks,
- 34:41they seize flocks and pasture them. So Joe's
- 34:44going to start cataloging injustice right here.
- 34:46He's going to start showing them, right? These
- 34:48are boundary markers of property lines that he's
- 34:50saying. And these men are moving these boundary
- 34:52markers. And by the way, later on in Deuteronomy
- 34:54chapter 19, verse 14, it says, you shall not
- 34:56move your neighbor's landmark. Absolutely. This
- 35:00is law. He already knows it orally. That's right.
- 35:04It's their inheritance. Deuteronomy 27, 17. Cursed
- 35:07be anyone who moves his neighbor's landmark.
- 35:09The law is going to tackle that. Job already
- 35:12knows this. Job knows this orally. He knows this
- 35:14in his relationship to Shaddai, but it's happening
- 35:17and there's not justice against them. That's
- 35:20what's blowing apart the worldview of the men,
- 35:21right? So people do things worthy of covenant
- 35:25curses. This happens, but he's not in a covenant
- 35:28or at least not in the covenant of the promised
- 35:31line. Okay. Joe 24 3 that they drive away the
- 35:35donkey of the fatherless. They take the widow's
- 35:39ox for a pledge. Here it comes. Starts talking
- 35:41about the widows and orphans, right? Widows and
- 35:46orphans have very little legal protection in
- 35:48the ancient world, if any, until the Torah. Once
- 35:51the Torah comes in for the nation of Israel,
- 35:54there is sanctions placed in there for them to
- 35:57take care of them, right? We know this. And it's
- 36:01not saying that all women and children are helpless.
- 36:03It's just talking about, in particular, the fatherless.
- 36:07So they drive away the donkey of the fatherless.
- 36:11It's theft of working property. Exactly, because
- 36:15that's how he earns his living. That's how he
- 36:17earns his living. That's right. It takes the
- 36:18widow's ox for a pledge. That means that an ox
- 36:20is something that plows. Plows, you plant things.
- 36:24They're taking away food. They're devouring widow's
- 36:27houses and they're displacing the fatherless.
- 36:29All right, watch this. Verse four, they thrust
- 36:32the poor off the road. The poor of the earth
- 36:34all hide themselves. Social displacement. The
- 36:37wicked do not just merely steal things. They
- 36:40make the vulnerable disappear from public life.
- 36:44My goodness. This is like reading a page out
- 36:47of the newspaper. It sure is. Behold, like wild
- 36:51donkeys in the desert, the poor go out to their
- 36:54toil. Seeking game the wasteland yields food
- 36:58for their children. Oh my gosh These are desperate
- 37:02survivors. They are they're desperate survivors
- 37:05and it's so important the poor are working They're
- 37:09not failing because they refuse to that with
- 37:11effort. No, they're willing to work for their
- 37:13food They're having a scavenge like wild animals.
- 37:17It's pointing out the brokenness of the system
- 37:20people suffer You know build that in them saying
- 37:24well, they're suffering because they're wicked
- 37:25and foolish Job's like no, sir The wicked and
- 37:28the foolish are taking are taking advantage of
- 37:31the poor in the week is what's actually going
- 37:33on, right? So they're out there verse 6 they
- 37:37gather their fodder in the field and they glean
- 37:39the vineyard of the wicked man Holy moly. I know
- 37:43listen to that. They're gathering That's turning
- 37:47their argument upside down. It's upside down.
- 37:50He was like, they're having to gather from the
- 37:52wicked vineyard. Exactly. That should remind
- 37:55you of the scribes and the Pharisees, by the
- 37:57way. Yes. And so in verse seven, they lie all
- 38:03night naked without clothing and have no covering
- 38:05in the cold. Yeah. That's a bodily cost that
- 38:08these people are feeling. Now they're out in
- 38:10the exposure. This is it's not abstract. It's
- 38:15the same today in America. You know, there's
- 38:18people outside with hardly any clothing. They're
- 38:20sleeping in the cold. They're taking away their
- 38:22homes. They're taking away their food. They're
- 38:24taking away their livelihoods, their jobs, their
- 38:26homes, everything. Listen to what the Torah says.
- 38:31If you take a poor, if you take a poor man's
- 38:34cloak as a pledge, you're supposed to return
- 38:36it by nightfall because it might be his only
- 38:39covering. That's the law folks. Yes. Job is literally
- 38:44spitting out Torah. He's spitting it out verbally,
- 38:48okay? They are wet with the rain of the mountains
- 38:50and cling to the rock for lack of shelter. Continuing
- 38:53that same picture, isn't that? They're exposed,
- 38:55displaced, shelterless, and the system's not
- 38:58taking care of it, and God doesn't have appointed
- 39:00justice times for it either. Exactly, and that's
- 39:03the thing. You know, it's this idea of compassion
- 39:07for these people and seeing what's being done,
- 39:10having your eyes opened. You know, not just going
- 39:12about your daily business, carrying on doing
- 39:14what you're doing. He's really starting to think
- 39:16maybe of something that he's never ever thought
- 39:18about before, never thought about. He's done
- 39:21what he's done. He's a righteous man. God has
- 39:22already said that. But maybe these are the things
- 39:26that now God is sort of saying, well, bring these
- 39:28things to mind. Now start speaking out, Job,
- 39:30on what you've seen, but you've never really
- 39:32owned in on. You've owned in on all the other
- 39:34stuff. But now you're starting to see. a part
- 39:38of my personality that I'm really giving to you
- 39:40through this suffering and through these people
- 39:42trying to comfort you. That's right. Once again,
- 39:47it's starting to awaken, the light starting to,
- 39:50the little dimmer switch is starting to turn
- 39:51up. I want you to think of those three men, almost
- 39:55like the children of Israel and Job being like
- 39:58Moses reading the law to them. Think about them
- 40:01when they're first hearing it, right? watch this
- 40:04listen to this there are those who snatch the
- 40:07fatherless child from the breast and they take
- 40:08a pledge against the poor so guys that's taking
- 40:12a child as debt security or tearing apart a vulnerable
- 40:18family or seizing what belongs to the poor with
- 40:22absolute ruthless indifference and the sad thing
- 40:25is uh rick that they don't even need that They're
- 40:29not just selfish. They're predatory. They don't
- 40:32even need it. Yeah. I mean, wow. Exactly. And
- 40:36that's the thing. It's not coming from a wall.
- 40:37You can understand if someone's pinching something
- 40:39if they're hungry and haven't got anything. But
- 40:41these ones have got everything. They've got vineyards.
- 40:43They've got their own sort of way of plowing
- 40:45and stuff like that. And yet they are just like
- 40:47stamping all over these people. And not only
- 40:50stamping, it seems that they're just not one
- 40:52thought. The empathy and compassion and the kindness.
- 40:55It's almost like they're psychopaths. I know
- 40:58listen to this watch this think about think about
- 41:01as a worker But this these people are poor listen
- 41:04to this verse 10 they go about naked without
- 41:06clothing hungry They carry the sheaves in other
- 41:09words the poor the poor Carry the food, but they
- 41:13don't even get to eat it exactly Exactly, that's
- 41:17so ironic. Isn't it ironic? removed from the
- 41:25thought of anything human are these people? Yeah,
- 41:29listen, listen to what this Job who's becoming
- 41:31a high priest says. Think about it like this.
- 41:34The friends have told him in their worldview
- 41:36basically like this. They've said if you live
- 41:38wisely and righteously, life tends toward order
- 41:40and blessing. That's what they're telling him.
- 41:42Here's what Job would respond. Tell that to the
- 41:45hungry laborer carrying another man's harvest.
- 41:48Exactly. Right? Right. Well, it's the same as
- 41:51the Pharisees. We've got, you must be being blessed
- 41:54because God must be thinking that we're really
- 41:55righteous and lovely because we've got lots of
- 41:57money and you must be a wicked person not worthy
- 41:59of anything because you haven't got anything.
- 42:02No, I'm with you. Yeah. Verse 11. I mean, can
- 42:05you imagine Jesus sort of like wearing a wardrobe
- 42:07around with him when he was going? Right. He
- 42:10only had like one or two sets of clothes probably.
- 42:12Right. You know, he picked to add things as he
- 42:14went along. Like he said, foxes have dens and
- 42:16chickens have... But the son of man's got nowhere
- 42:18to lay his head. I'm gonna lay his head. No,
- 42:20no, no. And yet then we're condemning him to
- 42:22be like, again, we've got this, this is all happening.
- 42:24We can all pick out stuff in the New Testament
- 42:28to see that basically it's the same thing dished
- 42:31up. Nothing is changed. And it's always those
- 42:34people that are in those leadership roles, those
- 42:38people that should be sort of dispensing these
- 42:40things that become harder. and harder and more
- 42:44small in their kindness, in their compassion,
- 42:48in their thoughts towards their fellow neighbour.
- 42:51Watch this, here's more injustice for these people
- 42:53who are poor. Among the olive rows of the wicked,
- 42:56they make oil, they tread the wine presses, but
- 42:59suffer thirst. So just like he said, they were
- 43:01working in the field and carrying the sheaves,
- 43:02but they don't get to eat it. And the same way
- 43:04they're stamping their olive oil and they make
- 43:07their wine, but they don't get to taste any of
- 43:09it. They're producing the oil and the wine and
- 43:13it's abundance for the wicked people. And they
- 43:15go thirsty, deprived and excluded. That's what
- 43:18Job is saying right here. Yeah. there and it
- 43:21shows a world where there's this proximity to
- 43:24blessing but it's not the same as the participation
- 43:27in the blessing they're in the proximity and
- 43:30if you remember what i told you early in the
- 43:31study i said that job sees god's creation now
- 43:35instead of a blessing he sees it as a curse remember
- 43:38me saying that that's what he's like cursed is
- 43:39the day of my birth i'm looking at all of this
- 43:42goodness of god and you called it very good and
- 43:44i'm saying it's not anymore not for me Okay,
- 43:48so Job is recognizing that not only for himself
- 43:50while he's in the dust, but now his compassion
- 43:52has grown for all of those people who are without.
- 43:55Whether he had compassion before or not, I don't
- 43:57know, but he was blameless and upright. He's
- 43:59blameless and upright. I would say he probably
- 44:01did have compassion and he certainly didn't do
- 44:03what Eliphaz said that he did. That's for sure.
- 44:05Yeah. Verse 12, from out of the city, the dying
- 44:08groan and the soul of the wounded cries for help,
- 44:10yet God charges no one with wrong. This is what
- 44:15I was talking about when I said he said something
- 44:18about God and I was saying, can we prove Job
- 44:21a liar? So far, no. No, you can't. And I'm going
- 44:24to say in verse 12, you still can't because you
- 44:27got to understand. And Elaine, you're probably
- 44:29the master of the word here, but I'm going to
- 44:33say When he says that he charges God no wrong
- 44:39it kind of stings when you hear that like it's
- 44:41like wait God charges no one with wrong, but
- 44:44that's not he's not saying God is morally evil.
- 44:47Okay, he's saying from the standpoint of visible
- 44:51history God often appears not to intervene when
- 44:54we expect him to and that's the point. That's
- 44:58the point. He's telling this To the group. He's
- 45:01not addressing just Eliphaz. He's saying it to
- 45:03the group guys he is and that in mine it says
- 45:06men are groaning in the city the mortally wounded
- 45:09are crying for help yet god finds nothing amiss
- 45:13right there's nothing amiss well well well there
- 45:16is but and that's the whole thing isn't it it's
- 45:19not god finds nothing amiss it's and god finds
- 45:22nothing amiss right you know exactly It's the
- 45:26way that goes up and down. It's how it's said.
- 45:32Exactly. So when we're reading the words, it
- 45:34can be lost. But if you keep it within the context
- 45:36of what he's saying, you got it. Very good. Perfect.
- 45:40And basically his faith is under pressure by
- 45:43these men and he's responding to it, not just
- 45:46in general terms. He's breaking it down like
- 45:47the law would break it down, but he also He's
- 45:50forcing this theological problem on their worldview.
- 45:53How can God be just when the cries of the crushed
- 45:55often seen seem unanswered? Answer me, men. Prove
- 46:00me wrong. That's where he's heading, right? Isn't
- 46:02it funny, though, that all of these things he
- 46:04keeps bringing up, like when we talk, it's leading
- 46:06you on to the next thing. You go further and
- 46:09further into the thought process. Mm hmm. And
- 46:11that's what's happening here. He's actually going,
- 46:14he's taking himself further in his thought process
- 46:17by the things he's saying, by the things he's
- 46:19realizing and the experience he's having with
- 46:21his friends. Right. So -called. His friends,
- 46:24right. So, so far, let me read the list of the
- 46:27things that he's handled all the way up to this
- 46:28point. Land theft, predatory lending, widow oppression,
- 46:32orphan exploitation, social displacement, labor
- 46:35injustice, bodily suffering, urban suffering,
- 46:38and apparent divine silence. Hmm. Now he's going
- 46:43to shift. Yes. Now he's going to shift. That's
- 46:47exactly what it's all about. That's that's really
- 46:49good. That's you should write that down on on
- 46:52the comments so we could. Yes. So now we're going
- 46:55to shift. We're going to finish the chapter.
- 46:57I know we're probably going to go over an hour,
- 46:58but just just stay with me because I asked you
- 47:01to do the homework in this chapter. And so I
- 47:03want to show you where we're going. All right.
- 47:05So Job is going to shift. Right? Verse 13, there
- 47:08are those who rebel against the light, who are
- 47:13not acquainted with its ways and do not stay
- 47:16in its paths. Right? They rebel against the light.
- 47:21He's starting to shift. He's talking about light
- 47:23and darkness now. It's one of my, I think it's
- 47:26one of the greatest descriptions of evil in scripture
- 47:29to be perfectly honest with you when he does
- 47:31this shift. Okay. Yep. Light carries this weight
- 47:35to it, moral clarity, truth, justice, what is
- 47:38right, what can be seen openly, sometimes even
- 47:41God's moral order. That's what light is used
- 47:43for in the Bible, right? He's not saying these
- 47:46people do bad things. He is saying they are posed
- 47:48to what is true, open and right. They're opposed
- 47:51to it. They're rebelling. They know it. They
- 47:53rebel against it. They're not even acquainted
- 47:56with its ways They don't even know how to operate
- 47:58within it and they certainly don't stay within
- 48:00its past when they when they do understand it
- 48:03Okay So then he says the murderer now he's went
- 48:07from all of these people being exploited now
- 48:10He's going into those that rebel against the
- 48:12light which is also where God's law handles Do
- 48:14not murder do not do absolutely the murder arises
- 48:17before it is light Interesting timing with that
- 48:21that he may kill the poor and needy and in the
- 48:23night. He is like a thief So first he brings
- 48:27out the murder who rises before the light I've
- 48:32got the murderer rises with the light Yeah, I'm
- 48:35wondering whether he's saying here that the murder
- 48:38himself rises with the people that are Righteously
- 48:42disposed. It's quite possible and I don't know
- 48:44we can do some study in that in those words like
- 48:46back in the hebrew but the way that I was reading
- 48:48it is that Just before its light he rises up
- 48:51and he's going to commit murder and then later
- 48:53He's a thief in the night. These people are thieves
- 48:55in the night and basically Yeah Go on so he can
- 48:59kill the poor and the needy and steal from these
- 49:01people. Yeah, but I again, you know, it's You
- 49:04can see it both ways, but the murder arises with
- 49:07the light again you know with the light is he
- 49:10because he's talking about you know god's ways
- 49:13here we're talking about those that would be
- 49:15um living out those ways so is he rising with
- 49:18those are living out god's ways and um to kill
- 49:21those that are doing that they are the poor and
- 49:23the needy that are living like they're the ones
- 49:25that are experiencing it from you the wicked
- 49:27man right right so Let's keep trudging along
- 49:32here, I'm sorry, but watch where he goes now.
- 49:34The eye of the adulterer also waits for the twilight
- 49:38saying, no, I will see me. And he veils his face.
- 49:41By the way, remember I told you he's not directly
- 49:44going after Eliphaz. In fact, he is telling it
- 49:47generally, but he is rocking their world right
- 49:52now. I don't know if you guys know this, but
- 49:53he's literally rocking this world. Like he's
- 49:56rocking our world. He's saying it. He moves from
- 49:59the murderer and the thief into the adulterer.
- 50:01You know the Ten Commandments handle this, guys.
- 50:04The eye of the adulterer, it's a very intentional
- 50:07phrase here. He's saying that their desire, their
- 50:09intention, they're coveting their secret orientation.
- 50:14Well, they're looking for it, aren't they? They're
- 50:15waiting for that appropriate time, which is twilight.
- 50:18They're waiting for that moment because they
- 50:20know that there's going to be total darkness.
- 50:22This is where these people operate. So it's showing
- 50:25that the way that sin comes into the world is
- 50:27through what's happening internally to you, then
- 50:30you operate external. Well, yeah, it is, but
- 50:33it has to be external before it goes internal
- 50:35to be born out. But that's exactly right. But
- 50:39so they see something, they desire it, they keep
- 50:41their secret orientation or whatever it is, then
- 50:43they act upon it and then it comes. Yes. All
- 50:46right. So then we've got. verse 16 in the dark
- 50:50they dig through houses they by day they shut
- 50:53themselves up they do not know the light very
- 50:57sneaky very sneaky it expands now to burglars
- 51:03thieves house breakers night crimes right digging
- 51:07through houses it's it's like None of this is
- 51:12abstract. He's literally describing the world
- 51:14in which they live He's just letting them know
- 51:16for deep darkness is mourning to all of them
- 51:20So instead of the light coming up deep darkness
- 51:23is the morning for them for they are they remind
- 51:25you what Christ said, isn't it? You know, yeah
- 51:27Pharisees if in fact your dark is light How dark
- 51:30your darkness is. How dark is the darkness, exactly.
- 51:33And they are friends with the terrors of deep
- 51:35darkness, right? So, oh my goodness. Well, again,
- 51:40it's like this outer darkness, isn't it? That
- 51:42they're sent out into outer darkness. Yes. We
- 51:45hear that, you know, the nation of Israel, they're
- 51:47in outer darkness. This is where they were sent.
- 51:50Right. Can you read verse 18 for me? Because
- 51:54mine says something, it might be a little bit
- 51:56different from yours. It says, may they be scum
- 52:00on the surface of the water. May their share
- 52:03of land be cursed. May no one turn on the way
- 52:06of their vineyards. Interesting. In the ESV,
- 52:10it says, you say, swift are they on the face
- 52:13of the waters. Their portion is cursed in the
- 52:15land. No treader turns toward their vineyards.
- 52:18So when he said you say, I thought that was interesting.
- 52:22Because I thought for a minute there that he
- 52:23was answering Elifaz, but it's not it seems to
- 52:26be it's like a common claim of the time But this
- 52:31is part of the reason the debate exists here.
- 52:34Swift are they on the face of the waters? Most
- 52:37likely this is just me and you might have something
- 52:40different fleeting unstable quickly carried away
- 52:43like a foam or a drift on water, perhaps the
- 52:46week. So the point would be that the wicked don't
- 52:48last like you say that wicked don't last. That's
- 52:51what they've been saying. Yeah. Or maybe that's
- 52:54what he's wanting them to become. Just scum.
- 52:57Because again, scum, you can sort of scrape it
- 52:59off and it's just thrown into nothing. Right.
- 53:03Because he's gone from the things of of he's
- 53:07gone and told us what they are doing. And now
- 53:12he's telling you what he would like them to be
- 53:16or to become or that would happen to their end.
- 53:20I mean, yeah, possibly. I'm there with you too.
- 53:25You see, because I'm thinking about the whole
- 53:27thing, because again, he's talked about light,
- 53:29he talks about darkness, and we know that he's
- 53:31talking about, you know, again, all the way through
- 53:33the word of God. We've got this light and this
- 53:35dark, this night and this day going on. and it's
- 53:38always we know that the people are in the light
- 53:40are sort of following God that he's living out
- 53:43God's principles in faith but darkness doesn't
- 53:46know anything about the light in fact darkness
- 53:48flees from the light so therefore I would be
- 53:50thinking now he's he's gone down all these things
- 53:53that they are and now he's trying he's telling
- 53:57you what he would like isn't ending because he
- 54:00says there doesn't he but that was the thing
- 54:02um uh like it says there uh where do we get that
- 54:04one Where was that thing, that last part? Verse
- 54:0818? No, where was that? We were in verse 18.
- 54:16Swift are they on the face of the water? Oh yeah,
- 54:17and even if it isn't so now, still no one can
- 54:20prove me a liar and show me that my words are
- 54:22worthless. I mean, even if it isn't so now. So
- 54:25he's listed all the things that these wicked
- 54:28people do, and to these poor oppressed people,
- 54:31and yet now he's saying to you, right, this is
- 54:34This is where the end is, because again, is there
- 54:37no recompense for them? Well, I think if you
- 54:40read verse 22, though, read verse 22, because
- 54:42he says, yet God prolongs the life of the mighty
- 54:44by his power, they rise up when they despair
- 54:47of life. He's I think you're in verse what? Verse
- 54:5122, chapter 24, verse 22, 22. Mine says, yet
- 54:57God keeps pulling the mighty along. They get
- 54:59up even when not trusting their own lives. Again,
- 55:03this is, again, yet God keeps pulling them along.
- 55:06So again, is he saying they're sort of spiritually
- 55:10that because they're alive, God is allowing them
- 55:13to follow down this path, or is it because this
- 55:15path has been sort of like preset for them because
- 55:18that's their character? I would say the latter.
- 55:20I would say the latter. I think that that's what's
- 55:22being said here. This retribution theology world
- 55:28view that everybody has towards job i think job
- 55:31job will acknowledge the ultimate reality of
- 55:34the wicked that there will be a time it will
- 55:36be judged it just does not happen in the way
- 55:39in which you believe. in our world. You've made
- 55:42a mistake. This is how to become a high priest.
- 55:45It's somebody who can have the ultimate compassion
- 55:47and dig in deep and really get down to the bottom
- 55:49of it and know that the Lord is there. Someone
- 55:52who's suffered, knows the Lord is there. Someone
- 55:54who understands the laws of God and how to rightly
- 55:57appropriate them through compassion. That's the
- 56:00ultimate point I'm trying to make here. Well,
- 56:02we spoke about that on Tuesday. Yes. It literally
- 56:07is. All these things are learning curves. and
- 56:11all it's meant to teach us is compassion. Knowing
- 56:14how we feel when we've been through these situations
- 56:17and circumstances that have shaped us, and knowing
- 56:20how God internally has used and utilized those
- 56:23things, that then we can extend and project that
- 56:27compassion when people are going through those
- 56:29things, because we know, like we said, you know,
- 56:32when Christ was going to the Resurrection of
- 56:34Lazarus, he cried. You know, I mean he did tell
- 56:38me, hang on lads, don't worry. Watch this, I'm
- 56:41super powerful, beep! Right, yeah. I'm gonna
- 56:44roll the stone away, you watch what I can do.
- 56:45You went with him. It didn't say that, he looked
- 56:48at them. He knew the pain that they were going
- 56:51through and he felt their pain. That's right.
- 56:53He understood their pain. And again, it's about
- 56:56understanding Christ's pain in the Garden of
- 56:58Gethsemane. When his sweat became his droplets
- 57:01of blood. When we look at what he did, there's
- 57:04this overwhelming understanding of what he did
- 57:06because we know what it feels like to be in extreme
- 57:10pain and want someone to have compassion upon
- 57:12us. Which is exactly what's happening to Job.
- 57:16He's beginning to wake up. He's starting to talk
- 57:18to God directly with these people in their earshot.
- 57:21And as they're sort of like getting smaller and
- 57:24smaller and narrower and narrower, they're going
- 57:25into more and more darkness. where Joe, his walls,
- 57:29like we say, because he's gone through this,
- 57:31because he's now starting to talk to God, the
- 57:34walls of his compassion and his understanding
- 57:36of God are getting wider and wider. So he's stepping
- 57:39more into light as they're getting further away.
- 57:43So you've got this sort of, Joe is moving towards
- 57:45the center, which is God, and then you've got
- 57:47these are moving further away from the center
- 57:50into darkness. That's right. so the gap the gulf
- 57:54once again which is what we're talking about
- 57:55schism a gap the schism the gap a wider that's
- 57:59good so we can't prove job a liar that's for
- 58:05sure we know that we were along with the friends
- 58:07know what he said about god in regard to yet
- 58:09he doesn't do anything with that's not how he
- 58:12meant it we understand the way in which he's
- 58:14saying it that um it's about timing not necessarily
- 58:18about god's ultimate justice so Here's this is
- 58:22how we're gonna end the study today so i'd ask
- 58:23you guys to read twenty four to twenty seven
- 58:25so now that you've heard this in chapter twenty
- 58:28four. Go back and read twenty five twenty six
- 58:30and twenty seven even though there's more job
- 58:32in that we're not gonna cover that all in the
- 58:34study. But i want you to pay close attention
- 58:36to how short bill dad speeches and then i want
- 58:39you really pay close attention to what he actually
- 58:42says and i want you to see how bill dad. Has
- 58:46nowhere to go and he starts talking in generalities.
- 58:49It's so wild. We do this. I've done it I've seen
- 58:52people do it to me. It's pretty wild. Well, God
- 58:54is good. So God does everything, you know The
- 59:01question God is when you want to know something
- 59:03to understand something when you don't understand
- 59:05it and that's right Yes. Yes, absolutely. So
- 59:08Thank you guys for your comments. Thank you,
- 59:10Alan, for bringing up that question. Yeah, I
- 59:12hope that we answered it. And why that was nagging,
- 59:16why we were thinking of David and Solomon and
- 59:18the law and all the things, because this is really
- 59:20a story about how to become a high priest. It's
- 59:22a story about God's law. It's a story about his
- 59:24oral tradition. And it's also a story about people
- 59:26who are outside of the covenant that God spoke
- 59:28with, whom he saw was righteous and upright,
- 59:31which is, by the way, a law to their heart. Romans
- 59:34chapter one, you'll see these kinds of things
- 59:36kind of re. Igniting later in the New Testament
- 59:39exactly and it's all about sort of like Joe being
- 59:42awakened internally Before that there was a lot
- 59:44of external going on now. Yes suffering He's
- 59:48been woken internally and don't we do the same,
- 59:50you know, you know God takes us through tribulations.
- 59:53Why because it yields peaceable fruits namely
- 59:55righteousness Yes, and it may not have been Romans
- 59:58chapter 1. Sorry, it might be When he talks about
- 1:00:02those who are who are going to be judged by their
- 1:00:05heart, their heart, they become a law into themselves.
- 1:00:07Yeah, that's one. Is that one? OK. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:00:10Those that did not have the law become a law
- 1:00:12unto themselves. That's right. Yeah, that's good.
- 1:00:14So we're going to end there. and read 25, 26,
- 1:00:18and 27. We might be able to get all the way to
- 1:00:2027 in the next chapter. I don't know. It depends.
- 1:00:23We had a really hard time getting through 24.
- 1:00:24And I'm sorry for all of the breaks that you
- 1:00:26got. I'm sure this is going to feel a little
- 1:00:28jagged through here. I apologize. All of a sudden,
- 1:00:31my internet is good now, but it wasn't before.
- 1:00:35So anyway, God bless you, Elaine. Thank you for
- 1:00:38sticking in there with it. Well, no, I mean,
- 1:00:40thank you for sticking in there with me. Just
- 1:00:42going off on a tangent. Real me in and I'm fine.
- 1:00:46I'll just do my bit. And I'll tell you right
- 1:00:49now, folks, we're going to do a study next week
- 1:00:52and we're going to record it. Something that
- 1:00:54Elaine is working on and it is going to blow
- 1:00:57your mind. I can't wait. Don't beat me up that
- 1:01:00much. Come on. Come on. It's that good. It's
- 1:01:03that good. It's that good. You've never heard
- 1:01:06it like this before, folks, I promise. I tell
- 1:01:08you what, let's start on the bottom rung so that
- 1:01:10if they think it's good, I can go up a bit, but
- 1:01:12don't put me at the top because I've got a long
- 1:01:13way to fall. All right. My feet are always swinging
- 1:01:17in the gutter. Well, that's usually where my
- 1:01:20mind is. So anyway. Thanks guys for watching
