Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone. I am
- 0:05Speaker 1: Andrew Zimmel, sitting in for the Texas Radio Hall of
- 0:09Speaker 1: Famer Craig Way this Tuesday afternoon. Thank you for joining us,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Thanks for hanging out. Steve Sarkisian just got done speaking
- 0:17Speaker 1: of his media availability. Possibly the last time we will
- 0:21Speaker 1: hear from coach Stark for a little bit. Of course,
- 0:25Speaker 1: this Saturday is fan appreciation no spring game, fan appreciation game.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Gonna be excited to see how that goes. Plus, NBA
- 0:35Speaker 1: Playoffs are in action, Which NBA Stars legacy is most
- 0:41Speaker 1: on the line, and are we already considering a guy
- 0:46Speaker 1: to jump maybe fifteen or twenty spots in the rankings.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We'll tell you who that is next. Craig Way joins
- 0:53Speaker 1: the program from Bobcat Ballpark in San marcos As, University
- 0:58Speaker 1: of Texas Baseball and Texas take the Diamond tonight, six pm,
- 1:03Speaker 1: first pitch on one of three to one Austin's eighty station.
- 1:06Speaker 1: We'll hear from Craig and Keith Morland from San Marcus.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Give us a little bit of a preview of what
- 1:12Speaker 1: we can expect tonight, because obviously the big weekend is
- 1:16Speaker 1: here for Texas and Texas A and M which pitcher
- 1:20Speaker 1: will go tonight. Craig will give us a little bit
- 1:22Speaker 1: of insight on that, I imagine, plus a lot of
- 1:26Speaker 1: draft talk today, a ton of draft talk wall to
- 1:29Speaker 1: wall because we are getting into the smoke screen time.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Right at the end of the college football season. To
- 1:36Speaker 1: about now, we've had an idea of who was going where,
- 1:40Speaker 1: who was gonna get traded, Will moves happen, will people
- 1:44Speaker 1: trade down? We have an idea now where everybody is
- 1:48Speaker 1: going to be picking on Thursday. It sounds like the
- 1:51Speaker 1: foam was ringing for the number two and number three pick.
- 1:54Speaker 1: It sounds like people are trying to trade up. Crashedon
- 1:57Speaker 1: gent Peter Schreger spoke about it today, so we'll hear
- 2:00Speaker 1: from him. We'll hear from Todd McShay and Chris Simms
- 2:03Speaker 1: and everybody else today on the program. It's a jam
- 2:06Speaker 1: pack show. You're not going to miss a single thing.
- 2:09Speaker 1: We'll hear from Sark here in the next segment from
- 2:12Speaker 1: his media availability. But we got to start with a
- 2:16Speaker 1: player who has been moved up and down and up
- 2:19Speaker 1: and down your all time rankings. When he won in
- 2:22Speaker 1: twenty fourteen as one of the youngest Finals MVPs of
- 2:25Speaker 1: all time, Kawhi Leonard skyrocket to draft. We all were like, Hey,
- 2:30Speaker 1: this is a guy who for the next decade we're
- 2:33Speaker 1: gonna be talking about as one of the best players
- 2:35Speaker 1: in the sport. And then he was a top two
- 2:38Speaker 1: in MVP voting just two seasons later in twenty sixteen.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And then the injuries start piling up and the nasty,
- 2:47Speaker 1: nasty divorce in San Antonio, and I knew people in
- 2:51Speaker 1: my life who were saying that this guy was a
- 2:54Speaker 1: a wasn't a playoff guy. He was the guy who
- 2:58Speaker 1: was the team guy. He gets moved to Toronto, improves
- 3:00Speaker 1: that he's the ultimate team guy. He goes to Toronto
- 3:03Speaker 1: on a new team in year number one and wins
- 3:05Speaker 1: a championship and a Finals MVP and knocks off the
- 3:08Speaker 1: Warriors dynasty for all intensive purposes, ending the Kevin Durant
- 3:15Speaker 1: and Steph Curry led teams. Now, granted, injuries did a
- 3:18Speaker 1: little bit of that as well, but the Toronto Raptors
- 3:21Speaker 1: get the rank. Kawhi Leonard now is a two times
- 3:23Speaker 1: Final MVP, a Defensive Player of the Year, and we're
- 3:27Speaker 1: talking about this guy when he goes to LA as
- 3:29Speaker 1: a potential three time champion and a guy who's going
- 3:32Speaker 1: to win a finals MVP in LA and now injuries
- 3:35Speaker 1: have riddled his career in his season, but last night,
- 3:40Speaker 1: Kawhi Leonard played maybe his best playoff game in almost
- 3:44Speaker 1: six years in a one oh five to one h
- 3:47Speaker 1: two win against the Denver Nuggets. Kawhi Leonard efficient fifteen
- 3:52Speaker 1: of nineteen for thirty nine points, four to seven from downtown.
- 3:56Speaker 1: He also had two steals, a couple of a block
- 4:00Speaker 1: looked outstanding. And it came at the perfect time because
- 4:04Speaker 1: I said after Game one, I was talking to buddies
- 4:08Speaker 1: of mine and I was saying that this is a
- 4:10Speaker 1: team in the LA Clippers who lost Game number one.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Denver did not win Game one. The Clippers lost Game one,
- 4:19Speaker 1: they turned the ball over twenty times, and the Nuggets
- 4:22Speaker 1: at home after firing their head coach Mike Malone and
- 4:26Speaker 1: firing the general manager just mere weeks before the NBA
- 4:30Speaker 1: playoffs begin, Well, they turned the ball over twenty times
- 4:33Speaker 1: last night on their own. So now it's a battle
- 4:37Speaker 1: of two teams who I had Denver fans in my
- 4:39Speaker 1: life are telling me, well, look the Clippers won and
- 4:41Speaker 1: Kuhi played played marvelously thirty nine points, but the rest
- 4:45Speaker 1: of the team shot a combined like thirty nine percent
- 4:48Speaker 1: from the field, and we turned the ball over twenty times. Zimmel,
- 4:53Speaker 1: So are you gonna give us a little bit of grace?
- 4:54Speaker 1: So are you gonna give us a little bit of
- 4:56Speaker 1: a slack here? That you know? You said the Clippers
- 4:59Speaker 1: lost game one? Turn the ball over twenty times? Did
- 5:02Speaker 1: Denver lose? Turn the ball over twenty times? And I say, yes, Okay,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you want it? Fine, We're one one going back to
- 5:08Speaker 1: la And the Kawhi Leonard of the playoffs of twenty
- 5:13Speaker 1: twenty five looks as good or maybe better than the
- 5:16Speaker 1: Kuhi letter we saw in twenty seventeen, in twenty sixteen,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and maybe this is the best Kawhi letter we've ever
- 5:23Speaker 1: seen in the NBA playoffs. This is what Kawai said
- 5:27Speaker 1: after the win on the postgame interview on TNT.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Came down to stop at the end of the game.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Great basketball team, especially at home, MVP caliber player with
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yokis and the great guys around him, Murray and they
- 5:43Speaker 2: all playing great, so tough, tough fight. Just what the
- 5:46Speaker 2: playoffs about?
- 5:47Speaker 3: I know what you said before the playoffs started that
- 5:49Speaker 3: you just want to leave it all out on the floor.
- 5:51Speaker 3: You were fifteen of nineteen from the field, thirty nine points.
- 5:54Speaker 3: When did you knew, Hey, I had it tonight.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I just kept going and staying in his own worry
- 6:00Speaker 2: about what chats are making, our missions, just cut shooting.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I know it's tough to get a road wind, especially
- 6:06Speaker 3: in the playoffs. Now it shifts back home. How much
- 6:08Speaker 3: does the mentality shift now knowing the series is tied
- 6:10Speaker 3: up with one one, you get to play in front
- 6:12Speaker 3: of some home fans.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Now, the same mentality. We got to go out there
- 6:15Speaker 2: and still play a good basketball game, staying focused. Like
- 6:19Speaker 2: I said, this is a great basketball team we're we're
- 6:21Speaker 2: playing against and there's no easy walk.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Now. Kawhi Leonard thirty nine points last night, and the
- 6:27Speaker 1: conversation now has shifted to if Kawhi was fully healthy,
- 6:32Speaker 1: If Kawhi Leonard did not deal with the call it
- 6:37Speaker 1: a quad injury in San Antonio, if you didn't deal
- 6:40Speaker 1: with the ACL injury he suffered in LA, where would
- 6:43Speaker 1: he be ranked all time now? And I hate the hypotheticals.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I hate when we go down this path of like
- 6:49Speaker 1: what if this, and what if that, and yeah, it
- 6:52Speaker 1: does make sports fun doing that, but you never are
- 6:55Speaker 1: going to get a definitive answer. You're never going to
- 6:57Speaker 1: get a definitive answer. And the other thing that bothers
- 7:01Speaker 1: me when we do this is that when you're talking
- 7:03Speaker 1: to your friend and you say where would Kawhi rank
- 7:06Speaker 1: all time, He'll say, well, he's a top twenty player,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and then you say name the twenty players that were
- 7:10Speaker 1: better than him or the conversation he would be in,
- 7:13Speaker 1: and they end up listing twenty five thirty thirty five guys.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I've solved that. What I do is I have an
- 7:20Speaker 1: Excel spreadsheet that I have saved on my phone. I
- 7:23Speaker 1: have one hundred NBA players ranked all time, and I
- 7:27Speaker 1: ranked them and I move them as the season goes. Now,
- 7:30Speaker 1: once you're done, you're done. You're not moving up or
- 7:33Speaker 1: down after your career is over. So a guy like
- 7:35Speaker 1: Michael Jordan, Congratulations, you're locked in, Bill Russell, Tim Duncan,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you're locked in. Got like Kawhi still a lot of
- 7:42Speaker 1: career left. Hopefully he's moving up and down. But I
- 7:46Speaker 1: looked at my rankings at the end of this regular
- 7:49Speaker 1: season and where these guys, these playoff performers are and
- 7:53Speaker 1: Kawhi Leonard has won a Defensive Player of the Year,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and he's won two championships, and he's been a Finals MVP,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and I have is a thirty third best player all time,
- 8:02Speaker 1: which is saying something. There's four thousand plus players who
- 8:05Speaker 1: suited up right, and Kawi Leonards is a thirty third
- 8:09Speaker 1: best guy. And I look at the guys that are
- 8:11Speaker 1: ahead of him. The Kevin Durantz to Nick lay jokichis
- 8:15Speaker 1: the Giannis had to takupos. And I do think that
- 8:18Speaker 1: if he is completely fully healthy, that he's playing eighty
- 8:21Speaker 1: two games a season, or let's call it sixty two
- 8:24Speaker 1: games a season, is an Even if he's playing a
- 8:27Speaker 1: majority of these games, he's probably higher than thirty third
- 8:31Speaker 1: all time because his individual statistics are racked up, probably higher.
- 8:36Speaker 1: He's individually scoring more points, he's grabbing more steals, he's
- 8:40Speaker 1: doing more board work on the rebounds. He's he's higher
- 8:44Speaker 1: all time than thirty third. He also his teams are
- 8:47Speaker 1: probably a little bit more successful. I think about that
- 8:50Speaker 1: Clippers team in the bubble that ended up losing to
- 8:54Speaker 1: the Denver Nuggets. Now he was a little bit banged up,
- 8:57Speaker 1: they lose in the bubble, and then every year after
- 9:00Speaker 1: that there was some sort of injury, whether it be
- 9:03Speaker 1: to Paul George or to Kawhi or to another supporting
- 9:07Speaker 1: cast member. And this is why that trade. Everybody rolled
- 9:11Speaker 1: their eyes when the Clippers traded for James Harden and
- 9:14Speaker 1: they let Paul George walk out the door. Well, you
- 9:16Speaker 1: saw how it played out this year. James Harden played
- 9:19Speaker 1: seventy plus games this year. Paul George I think he
- 9:23Speaker 1: did maybe seventy plus podcast this year, he didn't play
- 9:25Speaker 1: any enough games. The Clippers made the right decision. They said,
- 9:28Speaker 1: we want a guy who's going to play consistently in
- 9:30Speaker 1: the regular season. They got James Harden. He can carry
- 9:33Speaker 1: us through the regular season. And when Kawhi comes back
- 9:36Speaker 1: in the playoffs, that is when he plays his best basketball.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And it showed last night and a Clippers win against
- 9:44Speaker 1: the Denver Nuggets. Now the Nuggets they go to LA.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Now there's a lot of games left to be played.
- 9:50Speaker 1: The series is won one you know, the sting. The
- 9:53Speaker 1: series doesn't start until the road team wins a game.
- 9:57Speaker 1: We're tied all up. It's gonna be exciting, exciting for
- 10:00Speaker 1: that series. I hope it goes the distance. I hope
- 10:03Speaker 1: for Kawhi he's able to stay healthy throughout these playoffs
- 10:05Speaker 1: because I like to see him perform. Last night is
- 10:09Speaker 1: hopefully just a little bit a taste of what we
- 10:11Speaker 1: can get as the playoffs continue. I do, however, worry
- 10:15Speaker 1: about his health going forward. We'll see how that goes.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And then the game tonight Milwaukee and Indiana. The Grizzlies
- 10:21Speaker 1: blowing at blown out fifty points in game number one.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I'm not even tuning in for game number two. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: think the thunder are gonna wipe the floor. And then
- 10:29Speaker 1: Lakers and or Lakers and Wolves later tonight. We'll talk
- 10:34Speaker 1: about that game a little bit later on the show
- 10:36Speaker 1: as well. But coming up next, Steve Sarkasian's media availability
- 10:40Speaker 1: took us behind the curtain as spring practice continues on
- 10:44Speaker 1: the forty acres. What did he have to say about
- 10:46Speaker 1: his wide receiver room, how young they are? We'll hear
- 10:49Speaker 1: it next. Craig White Show rolls on Andrews and we'll
- 10:51Speaker 1: fill in for Craig Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone.
- 10:58Speaker 1: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 11:01Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame broadcaster craig Way Sports
- 11:07Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrews and We'll hanging
- 11:10Speaker 1: out with you as we roll along on a Tuesday
- 11:14Speaker 1: edition of The craig Way Show, and Steve Sarkisian had
- 11:18Speaker 1: media availability one of the last times we'll hear from
- 11:22Speaker 1: the head coach of the Texas Long Warns before the
- 11:25Speaker 1: college football season kicks off on August thirtieth with the
- 11:29Speaker 1: Texas long Horns traveling to Columbus. I was looking at
- 11:33Speaker 1: hotel rooms, to be completely honest with you, in Columbus, Ohio,
- 11:38Speaker 1: trying to see, hey, did the Buckeyes buy all the
- 11:42Speaker 1: did they buy all the hotels? How much is the
- 11:45Speaker 1: standing room only tickets for that game? And I'll keep
- 11:48Speaker 1: you posted because I'm thinking about taking a road trip
- 11:52Speaker 1: for that season opener. The season opener the defending national
- 11:57Speaker 1: champion Ohise Buckets versus the Texas Long Horns. That's something
- 12:00Speaker 1: that you're gonna see a whole lot of You're not
- 12:03Speaker 1: gonna get that matchup in most any other seasons. Now
- 12:07Speaker 1: at the expanded playoffs, the game I still think matters
- 12:10Speaker 1: a lot. This is going to really dictate both of
- 12:14Speaker 1: the team season you want to overact too much in April.
- 12:17Speaker 1: But I'm gonna be honest with you, the winner of
- 12:19Speaker 1: that game is gonna get a big boost when it
- 12:22Speaker 1: comes to the resume as the season continues. So Sarkisian
- 12:26Speaker 1: spoke today, he talked about how his team is looking.
- 12:29Speaker 1: He said, or explain how the Longhorn has been practicing.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Here's his opening statement.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Obviously, in the final week of spring practice, and we
- 12:38Speaker 4: really just want to maximize these final three days, which
- 12:40Speaker 4: I thought we did a pretty good job of that
- 12:42Speaker 4: with the start of it today. You know, I think
- 12:45Speaker 4: everybody in the organization has a thing two, three, ten
- 12:51Speaker 4: that we can improve upon, and if we can really
- 12:54Speaker 4: focus in on those things over the next few days
- 12:57Speaker 4: all the way through Saturday morning, I think we'll be
- 13:00Speaker 4: at a lot better place come June when we come
- 13:03Speaker 4: back and start our summer program as we get ready
- 13:06Speaker 4: for fall camp. So it's been a good spring up
- 13:10Speaker 4: to this point. A lot of guys have improved. But
- 13:14Speaker 4: as I've said early on, and we never should be
- 13:16Speaker 4: in spring, we're not a finished product, and nobody is
- 13:19Speaker 4: as individuals. We're clearly not in any phase of our
- 13:22Speaker 4: team right now.
- 13:24Speaker 5: So we got work to do.
- 13:25Speaker 4: But I appreciate the guys coming with the right intent
- 13:29Speaker 4: like they did this morning.
- 13:30Speaker 1: You feel pretty good about where the team is, obviously,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and the head coach is always going to say, hey,
- 13:34Speaker 1: we're developing a couple of things. There's a bunch of guys.
- 13:37Speaker 1: We'll hear a little bit later about there's a bunch
- 13:40Speaker 1: of guys who are going to their high school prom
- 13:41Speaker 1: here pretty soon. But the transfer portal has been a
- 13:44Speaker 1: big talk, and the one thing the Longhorns have done
- 13:48Speaker 1: very well is not having to go into the portal
- 13:51Speaker 1: for one of the most important positions, and that's the
- 13:53Speaker 1: offensive line. Sarkijian got asked about not going in the
- 13:57Speaker 1: portal for that position and about how that offensive line
- 14:00Speaker 1: room looks currently.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, we we've recruited that position pretty well
- 14:05Speaker 4: over the years. You know, there was that the class
- 14:09Speaker 4: that kind of started it with those seven guys in it,
- 14:11Speaker 4: and from there, I think we've we've brought in players
- 14:14Speaker 4: that have kind of fit the profile of the players
- 14:18Speaker 4: at the position, Guys with high character, guys that fit
- 14:22Speaker 4: the the stature, whether they're interior players or or or
- 14:25Speaker 4: tackle body types. You know, Kyle's a really good teacher
- 14:30Speaker 4: and and again I think that as much as you know,
- 14:33Speaker 4: we've been fortunate over the past couple of years, we've
- 14:35Speaker 4: played a pretty consistent group of guys.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Those other guys have.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Been working at their craft and and they're getting challenged
- 14:41Speaker 4: obviously every single day. The tackles are we've got some
- 14:45Speaker 4: really good edge rushers, uh. And then the interior guys
- 14:48Speaker 4: are with with some of the young players in our
- 14:50Speaker 4: program that are growing, but also some of the transfers
- 14:53Speaker 4: that have come in. So it's a heck of a challenge.
- 14:55Speaker 4: You know, I would say there's always room for growth,
- 14:58Speaker 4: and they're a little bit of of kind of a
- 15:01Speaker 4: you can put a spotlight on the old line, which
- 15:04Speaker 4: really would hold true for our entire team. Are strain
- 15:08Speaker 4: to finish, needs to improve up there, and it's different
- 15:10Speaker 4: when you're actually playing as opposed to when you're practicing.
- 15:13Speaker 4: And so we're really this week trying to strain to finish.
- 15:17Speaker 4: And yeah, we're trying to finish spring ball, but we're
- 15:19Speaker 4: trying to finish every rep. And what does that look like?
- 15:22Speaker 4: So these guys can understand the intensity that they need
- 15:27Speaker 4: to play with. There's a physical intensity, but there's a
- 15:29Speaker 4: mental intensity that they got to play with. And that's
- 15:32Speaker 4: not just in the run game, that's in past protection
- 15:34Speaker 4: as well. So big point of emphasis for those guys.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I think it's really important that the long Horns, I
- 15:40Speaker 1: should say, I think it's very cool that the Longhorns
- 15:43Speaker 1: have isolated the offensive line as one of the most
- 15:46Speaker 1: important things. You have a head coach and Steve Sarkisian
- 15:49Speaker 1: that is an offensive guru, and most offensive geniuses know
- 15:54Speaker 1: how important the big guys up front are. If you
- 15:57Speaker 1: want to have the RPO game, you want to have
- 16:00Speaker 1: the mix of the run of the past well having
- 16:02Speaker 1: on offensive line that is physical enough to get you
- 16:05Speaker 1: the holes that you need in the run game and
- 16:09Speaker 1: builds well enough that you have an offensive line that knows, Hey,
- 16:12Speaker 1: in past protection, let's keep our quarterback on his feet.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Super important. You see originally with the Pancake Fund and
- 16:20Speaker 1: how Texas and the nil deals were just funneled that way. Hey,
- 16:25Speaker 1: this is an important position, everybody. This is how we're
- 16:27Speaker 1: gonna win games in the SEC. I'm glad that it's
- 16:30Speaker 1: continued to develop. I'm glad that that is a room
- 16:33Speaker 1: that is getting attention. But the freshman wide receivers one
- 16:36Speaker 1: of the youngest rooms on the forty acres and maybe
- 16:39Speaker 1: one of the most important when you consider all the
- 16:41Speaker 1: guys who have gone from Texas to the NFL in
- 16:44Speaker 1: the past few seasons. Under Steve's Sarcasian wide receivers have
- 16:47Speaker 1: been a point of emphasis. This is a position group
- 16:51Speaker 1: that everywhere around the country looks at and says, that
- 16:55Speaker 1: is what Texas is doing very well developing wide receivers.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Talk to us a little bit about that, should we
- 17:00Speaker 1: receive a room?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, So I think these young guys, you know,
- 17:04Speaker 4: I feel for them to some in some capacity. These
- 17:08Speaker 4: four guys came in and they really didn't have a
- 17:12Speaker 4: lot of models to look at. You know, Wingo had
- 17:15Speaker 4: about three practices and then tweaked his hamstring. DeAndre Moore
- 17:18Speaker 4: has been out, you know all Spring has been doing
- 17:22Speaker 4: you know, light work, and so they've been having to learn,
- 17:26Speaker 4: you know, kind of trial by fire, you know, in essence,
- 17:30Speaker 4: and so they're getting such valuable reps right now and.
- 17:33Speaker 5: You can see the growth.
- 17:35Speaker 4: But like a lot of young players, it's kind of
- 17:37Speaker 4: two steps forward, one step back, and then it's two
- 17:40Speaker 4: steps forward, one step back. And now more than ever
- 17:44Speaker 4: is them you know, you're you just finished practice thirteen.
- 17:48Speaker 4: You know, we probably have very few guys that don't
- 17:51Speaker 4: have a bump of bruise and nick somewhere, and so
- 17:54Speaker 4: now they're fighting through.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Man, how do I how do I compartmentalize?
- 17:58Speaker 4: My body's not quite a hundred percent, but I need
- 18:01Speaker 4: to be mentally one hundred percent and execute those calls.
- 18:05Speaker 4: But I've been impressed with those guys. You can definitely
- 18:07Speaker 4: see the skill set of all of them, and you
- 18:10Speaker 4: can start to see the guys that are picking it
- 18:12Speaker 4: up maybe a little quicker than others.
- 18:14Speaker 5: And the thing that I'm I'm.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Hopeful that we really get we got a little of
- 18:19Speaker 4: today and we get the next two days is when
- 18:21Speaker 4: their opportunities come, that their natural instincts start to really
- 18:25Speaker 4: kick in now and they start making plays and making
- 18:28Speaker 4: plays on the ball. I don't expect them to be
- 18:30Speaker 4: one hundred percent yet. This is this is a lot
- 18:32Speaker 4: like and you guys have been around us, no, you know,
- 18:35Speaker 4: the young receivers, it's a process.
- 18:36Speaker 5: To get them ready to play.
- 18:39Speaker 4: But when the balls in the air, that their instincts
- 18:42Speaker 4: and their natural ability really starts to come to fold.
- 18:45Speaker 4: And we saw some of that today I'm really, you know,
- 18:48Speaker 4: kind of looking forward to that here Thursday and Saturday
- 18:51Speaker 4: to you know, allow these guys to play some and
- 18:54Speaker 4: if they're wrong, they're wrong.
- 18:55Speaker 5: That's okay, we can coach that. But but who's going
- 18:58Speaker 5: to go make some plays.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Who's going to make the play on the ball and
- 19:00Speaker 4: the fifty to fifty those contesting catches, third down, read area,
- 19:04Speaker 4: those types.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Of things we're hearing from head coach Steve Sarkesian is
- 19:06Speaker 1: media availability today as spring game or practice gets coming
- 19:11Speaker 1: to a close with Saturday now no spring game on Saturday, obviously,
- 19:16Speaker 1: but more fan appreciation practices. Sarkisa got asked, what is
- 19:20Speaker 1: Saturday going to look like with no spring game?
- 19:23Speaker 4: It'll be a practice with kind of scrimmage portions, a
- 19:28Speaker 4: lot of game like scenarios, which is what we've been
- 19:31Speaker 4: doing at the end of the last couple of weeks.
- 19:33Speaker 4: You know, we've been doing a lot of move the field,
- 19:35Speaker 4: We've been doing a lot of red area work. We're
- 19:38Speaker 4: trying to create situations but not having them scripted to
- 19:42Speaker 4: where they have to play the game, and we're putting
- 19:45Speaker 4: him in as many game like situations as we can
- 19:48Speaker 4: to see the response, you know, like like, we had
- 19:50Speaker 4: a couple of situations last Thursday night, a really critical
- 19:55Speaker 4: third down and a critical fourth down where a younger
- 19:58Speaker 4: receiver and a running back to catch, and I don't
- 20:01Speaker 4: think really understood where the first down marker was. And
- 20:04Speaker 4: those are things that we're trying to teach the game
- 20:07Speaker 4: right now. It's not just about running plays, it's how
- 20:10Speaker 4: the game works within the framework or how those plays
- 20:13Speaker 4: work within the framework of the situation.
- 20:15Speaker 5: Of the game. So that we'll do a lot of
- 20:17Speaker 5: that work Saturday.
- 20:19Speaker 4: You know, we've got a lot of different things happening
- 20:21Speaker 4: this weekend, obviously with the draft coming up this weekend,
- 20:24Speaker 4: which we're pumped for our guys. We've got Fan Day Saturday,
- 20:27Speaker 4: which is going to be a great day for the
- 20:29Speaker 4: fans and our players to interact in DKR. After that,
- 20:33Speaker 4: we've got players that have got prom coming up this week.
- 20:36Speaker 4: I got twenty two guys that should still be in
- 20:38Speaker 4: high school that have problem this weekend.
- 20:39Speaker 5: So we've got some moving parts.
- 20:41Speaker 4: We just want to make sure that we capitalize on
- 20:43Speaker 4: those two hours that we get together.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Yeah, could you imagine going from the long warm practices
- 20:48Speaker 1: to also thinking about prom That would be such a
- 20:52Speaker 1: such a difference in world. And it's funny as you
- 20:55Speaker 1: get further and further away from that time in your life,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you kind of think like, oh man, I got bills
- 20:59Speaker 1: to pay, I got kids, I got a wife. This
- 21:01Speaker 1: is still the most important thing on a lot of
- 21:03Speaker 1: these guys' mind. Yeah, it's very important to get the
- 21:05Speaker 1: install going. But I can't be late on problem. She's
- 21:09Speaker 1: gonna kill me if I'm late. We'll hear more from
- 21:11Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian as the show rolls on, including how gratifying
- 21:16Speaker 1: it is to get Quinn viewers into the NFL. Coming
- 21:20Speaker 1: up this weekend Thursday, the NFL Draft starts. We'll have
- 21:22Speaker 1: more NFL talk later as well. But next, Inconceivable, Oh
- 21:28Speaker 1: you know I've missed it. Inconceivable. Up next through Creigway
- 21:31Speaker 1: Show rolls on on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone.
- 21:36Speaker 6: Inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable.
- 21:42Speaker 5: Use that, fur, I don't think I miss what you're thinking.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Miss Inconceivable on a Tuesday edition of The Craigway Show.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And I know the Lent is Over Easter was on Sunday.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Hopefully you guys had an excellent one, but many of
- 21:59Speaker 1: us gave up things for Lent, and I know a
- 22:03Speaker 1: lot of my friends started to enjoying those things. You know, Hey,
- 22:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna give up chocolate, I'm gonna give up TV.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna give up comic books. I'm gonna give up
- 22:11Speaker 1: wine or beer maybe for some of you for Lent. Well, luckily,
- 22:17Speaker 1: the chimpanzees don't have to worry about any of that.
- 22:19Speaker 1: They don't give up anything for Lent. And there's a
- 22:22Speaker 1: new story, there's a new video. I should say, because
- 22:25Speaker 1: you know I love to see these videos. Their party
- 22:28Speaker 1: animals is what they're calling them. There are chimpanzees. They
- 22:32Speaker 1: got caught on camera. You know, we always have those
- 22:36Speaker 1: researchers not leaving those wild champanzees alone. Now we have
- 22:41Speaker 1: them on twenty four to seven camera all the time.
- 22:44Speaker 1: They're just trying to enjoy their their fruit. But they
- 22:48Speaker 1: were caught on camera sharing alcoholic fruits. A team of
- 22:52Speaker 1: British researchers studying champanzees in West Africa says they have
- 22:57Speaker 1: not documented primates eating and sharing in alcoholic fruit. The
- 23:02Speaker 1: university team presidents that the cameras were set up in
- 23:06Speaker 1: the Kansasy National Park to capture champanzees sharing fermented African
- 23:12Speaker 1: breadfruit that would later be confirmed to contain ethanol. Yeah,
- 23:17Speaker 1: this is not just your run of the mill boxed
- 23:20Speaker 1: wine these chimpanzees are enjoying.
- 23:22Speaker 7: No.
- 23:23Speaker 1: The team studies suggest that the chimpanzees could be using
- 23:27Speaker 1: alcohol for a similar purpose that you and I might do,
- 23:31Speaker 1: which would be to partake in some you know, adult
- 23:33Speaker 1: beverages for humans. We know the drinking alcohol leads to
- 23:36Speaker 1: dolph meine and you know, euphouria in some situations. They're
- 23:42Speaker 1: saying that this might strengthen the bonds between the chimps
- 23:46Speaker 1: sharing in fruit and little wine. I understand, I support it.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I'm here for it. The only thing I have to
- 23:53Speaker 1: say is, maybe we don't watch these champanzees all the time.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Can we give them a little bit of space, a
- 23:59Speaker 1: little bit of privacy. If you and I were having
- 24:02Speaker 1: a party, we wouldn't want cameras all over the place.
- 24:05Speaker 1: This is a big brother. We don't live in a
- 24:07Speaker 1: fish tank. Allow the monkeys to have their fine, maybe
- 24:11Speaker 1: a little monkey business even, but don't put the camera
- 24:15Speaker 1: in the face of the party animals. That's all I'm asking.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Let me be the spokesman. For the chimpanzees. I'll do it.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I'm not afraid of doing that. Okay. Now you might
- 24:25Speaker 1: have seen this story on social media earlier this week.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I was always terrified of quicksand as a child, you're
- 24:33Speaker 1: taught about quicksand it's in your books, it's in your movies,
- 24:37Speaker 1: and you think to yourself, this is going to be
- 24:40Speaker 1: a major problem. I thought I would have more problems
- 24:44Speaker 1: with quicksand, but in fact, I have more problems with
- 24:46Speaker 1: people not putting their directionals on on the highway. That
- 24:50Speaker 1: has been a bigger problem that needs to be addressed. Quicksand, however,
- 24:55Speaker 1: has not really been a problem for you or I.
- 24:58Speaker 1: But this man in Michigan, he became stuck in waste
- 25:02Speaker 1: deep quicksand on the Lake Michigan beach. Now, luckily he
- 25:06Speaker 1: emerged without injuries. And he also did something that many
- 25:09Speaker 1: of us have struggled with. That's a finny girlfriend. Traverse
- 25:14Speaker 1: City resident Mitchell O'Brien, says. Brani Ski said that they
- 25:18Speaker 1: were searching the Leland bluestone at Reynolds Street Beach when
- 25:22Speaker 1: O'Brien took a wrong step about five feet past the
- 25:26Speaker 1: shoreline and sunk like a rock into the stand. Quote.
- 25:30Speaker 1: If it was obviously unstable, we wouldn't have walked out.
- 25:34Speaker 1: But I didn't look that bad. It just looked a
- 25:36Speaker 1: little wet sand, and by the time we were there,
- 25:39Speaker 1: most of it was firm enough to walk on. He
- 25:41Speaker 1: thought well. O'Brien told the Detroit News that his first
- 25:44Speaker 1: thought actually was oh no, not this again. He explained
- 25:48Speaker 1: that the incident quote isn't the first time I've dealt
- 25:50Speaker 1: with something like that on the Great Lakes. O'Brien said
- 25:53Speaker 1: that he escaped his previous predicament by flopping down on
- 25:56Speaker 1: his backside, but this situation was considerably more sticky. Quote.
- 26:01Speaker 1: My left leg it wouldn't move. It's like there was
- 26:04Speaker 1: something holding it underground. It was crazy how hard it
- 26:08Speaker 1: was in there. Now Brian Skia coworkers from the two
- 26:11Speaker 1: thousand or two seventeen Recovery Center, had only recently started
- 26:15Speaker 1: questioning whether their friendship could be something more now. Luckily
- 26:19Speaker 1: they both called nine to one one and they got
- 26:22Speaker 1: there about the same time. I think my girlfriend was
- 26:25Speaker 1: trying to call two, she said, at the same time,
- 26:27Speaker 1: about twenty feet away, my boyfriend is stuck in the sand. Now,
- 26:30Speaker 1: how would you like that? The first time you're officially
- 26:34Speaker 1: going to call each other boyfriend girlfriend is when one
- 26:37Speaker 1: of you get stuck in Quicksand you know, I've heard
- 26:41Speaker 1: it's you know, hard to decide to figure out when
- 26:45Speaker 1: you say I love you to your partner, But it's
- 26:49Speaker 1: even harder to find out when you call yourselves a relationship.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Hey are we talking to other people?
- 26:54Speaker 5: Hey?
- 26:54Speaker 1: Are you still on the dating apps? Or what are we?
- 26:57Speaker 1: Nothing will clear all of that up, like falling into
- 27:00Speaker 1: Quicksand I imagine I gotta say to myself too, how
- 27:05Speaker 1: embarrassing would it be that if you have feelings for somebody.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Let's say I'm going out on a date with a girl,
- 27:09Speaker 1: or I'm thinking about asking a girl out on a date,
- 27:11Speaker 1: and I fall into Quicksand instead of saying my boyfriend
- 27:15Speaker 1: stuck in the sand, she's saying he always like a
- 27:17Speaker 1: brother to me. He's stuck in the Quicksand what can
- 27:20Speaker 1: we do? I'm glad that this happy couple is now
- 27:25Speaker 1: going forth, but I will say this stick this in
- 27:28Speaker 1: in health and in quicksand got to keep an eye
- 27:31Speaker 1: on that. And then finally, we've all had Easter egg hunts.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Before we've done the Easter egg hunt but what about
- 27:40Speaker 1: this brewery in Belgium that is swapping painted eggs with
- 27:43Speaker 1: frosty blues. It's the world's largest beer hunt, and again
- 27:48Speaker 1: it's the fifth annual one of these things. I'm glad
- 27:52Speaker 1: that we have it. I'm glad that this is occurring
- 27:54Speaker 1: in Belgium. These seem like very nice people. A thousand
- 27:58Speaker 1: people registering with twelve thousand hidden bottles of beer. Now
- 28:02Speaker 1: talk about a great marketing strategy. I need to get
- 28:05Speaker 1: with some of the people in my life, say hey,
- 28:07Speaker 1: maybe next year we do an Easter egg hunt with
- 28:10Speaker 1: something like that. That doesn't seem like a terrible idea,
- 28:12Speaker 1: and it seems like a great idea if you're a
- 28:14Speaker 1: brewery in Belgium. All right, that is inconceivable today? What
- 28:17Speaker 1: is the most inconceivable The monkey's monkeying around the party animals,
- 28:21Speaker 1: swapping alcoholic fruit, or falling into quicksand and having your
- 28:27Speaker 1: new girlfriend call the police not a bad look, or
- 28:30Speaker 1: of course, the Easter egg hunt. But we're swapping the
- 28:33Speaker 1: eggs for maybe a couple of frosty brews. All inconceivable stories. Nevertheless,
- 28:39Speaker 1: all right, when we come back, we thought it was
- 28:41Speaker 1: inconceivable that this NBA superstar got traded. It was even
- 28:45Speaker 1: more inconceivable what his GM said to defend himself. You know,
- 28:50Speaker 1: we're talking about Unico Harrison coming up next to Gregway.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Show rolls on our number one on sports Radio AM
- 28:56Speaker 1: thirteen hundred The Zone Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Andrew Zim will hanging out with you this Tuesday afternoon.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Don't forget this afternoon, six pm, First Pitch, University of
- 29:10Speaker 1: Texas Travels a bobcat Ballpark take on the Texas State Bobcats.
- 29:15Speaker 1: This has been a weird series between the two teams.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Is a long series between the two teams. It doesn't
- 29:20Speaker 1: seem like the home team wins a lot in the
- 29:23Speaker 1: Texas and Texas universe or Texas State Texas rivalry on
- 29:28Speaker 1: the diamond. Also this weekend Texas A and M. So
- 29:32Speaker 1: you wonder what that pitching staff will look like. Craig
- 29:35Speaker 1: Way joins the show in the four o'clock hour. We'll
- 29:37Speaker 1: talk about pitching and of course what we can expect
- 29:41Speaker 1: from Longhorn Baseball in San Marcus. This evening, six pm,
- 29:45Speaker 1: First Pitch, one oh three to one, Austin Stades Station.
- 29:47Speaker 1: You can also hear it on the Free iHeartRadio app
- 29:50Speaker 1: as well. So when Luka Danci got traded, I would
- 29:55Speaker 1: say ninety nine point ninety nine nine percent of us.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Maybe the only people who didn't, who weren't taken the back,
- 30:00Speaker 1: weren't shocked by that news were Nico Harrison and maybe
- 30:05Speaker 1: Nico Harrison's assistant are the only two people who seem
- 30:09Speaker 1: that we're not surprised that Luca got traded. And we
- 30:13Speaker 1: went back and forth, and Nico spoke in Cleveland right
- 30:17Speaker 1: after the trade occurred, and Jason Kidd was there and
- 30:19Speaker 1: he looked like Jason Kidd was absolutely miserable. I've never
- 30:23Speaker 1: seen anybody more miserable than Jason Kidd in that situation
- 30:27Speaker 1: to be the head coach after trading the franchise player.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Never seen a head coach look as miserable as Jason
- 30:33Speaker 1: Kidd did during that initial press conference. And then we
- 30:36Speaker 1: got word after the Mavericks got knocked out of the
- 30:40Speaker 1: playoffs that there was going to be a press conference,
- 30:43Speaker 1: and we also heard the ESPN's Tim mcmanahan was going
- 30:46Speaker 1: to drop a kind of an expose which would expose
- 30:51Speaker 1: how do we get to this point? And it's weird
- 30:53Speaker 1: to talk in sports expose when it comes to a trade.
- 30:56Speaker 1: But that's really what it was. It came down to
- 30:58Speaker 1: Nico Harrison not really wanting a lot of to lack
- 31:03Speaker 1: of a better word, conflict behind the scenes with other
- 31:07Speaker 1: staff members. Hey, we're gonna get rid of this trainer
- 31:10Speaker 1: who's been here twenty plus years and was Derk Davinsky's guy.
- 31:12Speaker 1: We're gonna get rid of him or replace him with
- 31:15Speaker 1: our guy. We're going to move off of a guy
- 31:16Speaker 1: like Luka Docik because he's not our guy. We want
- 31:19Speaker 1: our guy, Anthony Davis in the building. And all that's
- 31:22Speaker 1: fine and dandy. You could do all of that, but
- 31:26Speaker 1: you need to have results. And the Mavericks missed the
- 31:28Speaker 1: playoffs this season, made the play in missed the playoffs,
- 31:32Speaker 1: and then yesterday the most inconceivable thing outside of the
- 31:37Speaker 1: inconceivable occurred, and that was Nico Harrison decided to speak
- 31:41Speaker 1: to the Dallas Press. And we knew he was going
- 31:44Speaker 1: to do something. We just didn't know what it was
- 31:46Speaker 1: going to be. And we didn't know what the questions
- 31:48Speaker 1: were going to be asked and how they were going
- 31:51Speaker 1: to be phrased. And you got to listen to some
- 31:53Speaker 1: of these questions here is the first one to the
- 31:56Speaker 1: general manager of the Dallas Mavericks.
- 31:58Speaker 8: The anger and outrage from the fan base? Has that
- 32:02Speaker 8: exceeded what you were kind of planning for? Yeah, good question.
- 32:09Speaker 8: I didn't know that Luca was important to the fan base.
- 32:13Speaker 8: I didn't quite know it to what level.
- 32:16Speaker 1: So that's firstly and foremost an insane question. Did you
- 32:19Speaker 1: expect to this much hate? Now you have to ask it.
- 32:22Speaker 1: I got a lot of journalists in my life that
- 32:24Speaker 1: have to ask the tough questions to politicians, to police officers,
- 32:29Speaker 1: to general managers. Well, now, yeah, that is what we're
- 32:32Speaker 1: having to do. We have to ask the very difficult
- 32:34Speaker 1: question of Nico Harrison. Were you expecting this much hate?
- 32:38Speaker 1: And you hear him? Well, you know, that was a
- 32:40Speaker 1: good question. I knew he was important to the franchise,
- 32:43Speaker 1: didn't realize how important he was. What are you saying,
- 32:46Speaker 1: How is that possible that you don't know how big
- 32:48Speaker 1: of a deal Luca is in the city of Dallas.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Here's a good lesson for those of you who are
- 32:55Speaker 1: young general managers out there who want to be general managers.
- 32:57Speaker 1: One day, go out into the concourse before a game,
- 33:03Speaker 1: look around. This is a good lesson. There's two big takeaways.
- 33:08Speaker 1: If your concourse was full of jerseys of players who
- 33:11Speaker 1: no longer play there, older players, Hall of Fame players,
- 33:14Speaker 1: and there's not a lot of jerseys of the current team,
- 33:17Speaker 1: that's a bad sign. That means you have no marketable stars,
- 33:21Speaker 1: or you're not marketing your stars well enough. That is
- 33:24Speaker 1: a bad sign. The other bad sign is that you're considering.
- 33:27Speaker 1: You're thinking, Hey, maybe we're gonna trade a guy. We're
- 33:30Speaker 1: gonna make a move, We're gonna get rid of a player.
- 33:33Speaker 1: I wonder how the fan base will react. Let's go
- 33:35Speaker 1: to the concourse. Let's look around the concourse. Hey, ninety
- 33:39Speaker 1: percent of the jerseys in our concourse, guys buying popcorn,
- 33:42Speaker 1: guys getting sodas and hot dogs are wearing number seventy
- 33:46Speaker 1: seven jerseys with Luca on the back of them. Hey,
- 33:49Speaker 1: maybe this isn't a great idea that we make this trade. Now,
- 33:52Speaker 1: that first and foremost is an insane thing for Nico Harrison,
- 33:56Speaker 1: the general manager of the Dallas Mavericks, to say, I
- 33:58Speaker 1: didn't know how big of a deal this was going
- 33:59Speaker 1: to beat. But let's hear maybe the wildest questions ever
- 34:05Speaker 1: asked in a media press conference, Why why shouldn't you
- 34:12Speaker 1: be fired?
- 34:15Speaker 9: Well, One, I think I've done a really good job
- 34:18Speaker 9: here and I don't think I can be judged by
- 34:21Speaker 9: the injuries this year. You have to judge from totality
- 34:25Speaker 9: from beginning to end, and so I think I have
- 34:30Speaker 9: a really good working relationship with Patrick.
- 34:33Speaker 1: So Patrick being the ownership group and everybody else who
- 34:35Speaker 1: did the president of basketball operations for the Dallas Mavericks.
- 34:39Speaker 1: But why should you be fired? Now? The lead up
- 34:41Speaker 1: to that question was, Hey, you know there was fire
- 34:44Speaker 1: and Nico Chance when Luca returned to Dallas as media members, Yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 1: we get mean tweets all the time, but we never
- 34:51Speaker 1: get the vitriol that you got in that game. Fire
- 34:54Speaker 1: and Nico Chance. At a game like that, a homecom
- 35:00Speaker 1: for Luka Dancik and the fans obviously are on the
- 35:02Speaker 1: side of the player and not of the ownership or
- 35:06Speaker 1: the general manager. Now, Charles Barkley has been known to
- 35:09Speaker 1: say a thing or two. He's been known to open
- 35:11Speaker 1: his mouth and put his foot in it, and he's
- 35:13Speaker 1: been known to get in some hot waters with the
- 35:15Speaker 1: things that he has to say. He was on TNT
- 35:17Speaker 1: last night he gave Nico Harrison a little bit of
- 35:19Speaker 1: a little bit of advice.
- 35:22Speaker 10: Nico Harrison, I consider you a friend of mine. I
- 35:25Speaker 10: wish you nothing but the best. I thought you did
- 35:27Speaker 10: a good job last year with the MAVs, and obviously
- 35:29Speaker 10: whatever happened this year didn't work out. Man, don't do
- 35:32Speaker 10: no more press conferences like I don't even know what
- 35:36Speaker 10: you're doing.
- 35:37Speaker 11: I really don't like. I got sympathy and love.
- 35:41Speaker 10: For you, but I have zero idea what you're trying
- 35:44Speaker 10: to do. This war is over, brother, you you go
- 35:48Speaker 10: up to take you taken the l I hope you
- 35:51Speaker 10: keep your job.
- 35:51Speaker 5: I hope that team get healthy.
- 35:53Speaker 10: But man, don't do any more interviews.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Please don't, no, please do please, do as many interviews
- 35:59Speaker 1: as you want to do. Please open your mouth and
- 36:02Speaker 1: talk at nauseum about the Dallas Mavericks and what the
- 36:06Speaker 1: plans are moving forward for this organization. I will give
- 36:09Speaker 1: him credit. I'll give Nico Harrison a little bit of
- 36:11Speaker 1: credit here. He had an idea at a blueprint. He said,
- 36:15Speaker 1: you know what, let's go get in a Anthony Davis
- 36:17Speaker 1: type of guy, and let's pair him with Kyrie Irving.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Let's have PJ. Washington, and we have Klaik Thompson as
- 36:23Speaker 1: a shooter, and this is maybe one of the best
- 36:25Speaker 1: teams ever put together on a two K roster with
- 36:28Speaker 1: the injuries turned off, this is one of the best
- 36:31Speaker 1: rosters you can put together on paper. But the problem,
- 36:34Speaker 1: of course is that those guys did not play together.
- 36:36Speaker 1: They didn't play enough games together or even play a
- 36:40Speaker 1: playoff series next to each other. And you obviously look
- 36:44Speaker 1: at this and you say, you don't give up a
- 36:47Speaker 1: generational talent, top five player in the league for a
- 36:50Speaker 1: guy over the hill at thirty years old in Anthony Davis,
- 36:52Speaker 1: whose nickname colloquially is day to day Davis, that he
- 36:56Speaker 1: doesn't play every single game. And you can't say the
- 37:00Speaker 1: reason we got rid of Lucas because we're a defensive
- 37:02Speaker 1: defense wins championships. We are trying to bring in a
- 37:06Speaker 1: defensive culture that Anthony Davis obviously hope you hope would
- 37:11Speaker 1: do for you. But this is a marvelous, marvelous job
- 37:17Speaker 1: by Nika Harrison. Very rarely do we see a general
- 37:20Speaker 1: manager able to turn the city against him as quickly
- 37:22Speaker 1: as he did. We're gonna hear from the other general
- 37:25Speaker 1: manager later in the show in Dallas, Oh By the way,
- 37:29Speaker 1: he also owns the team that Jerry Jones, we'll hear
- 37:32Speaker 1: from him because he even had thoughts on the Luca trade. Yeah,
- 37:36Speaker 1: how bad it is that Jerry Jones and the week
- 37:38Speaker 1: of the NFL Draft is talking about your team and
- 37:41Speaker 1: your misstep in trading your player. It's not great. When
- 37:46Speaker 1: we come back, hour two of the Craigway Show rolls on,
- 37:49Speaker 1: we'll talk NFL Draft all coming up next Andrews I
- 37:52Speaker 1: will sitting in on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the
- 37:54Speaker 1: Zone coach. What are the expectations you have expectations for
- 37:59Speaker 1: NFL Draft.
- 38:01Speaker 4: I don't have expectations, you know, I am unfortunately. You know,
- 38:06Speaker 4: as I tell these guys when when we're getting ready
- 38:09Speaker 4: to uh, when we're recruiting them. You know, this is
- 38:11Speaker 4: one of the few times in high school where you
- 38:14Speaker 4: get to choose where you get to go to school.
- 38:16Speaker 4: And a lot of these guys, obviously they all chose
- 38:18Speaker 4: to come to the University of Texas for all the
- 38:20Speaker 4: different reasons which we've touched on.
- 38:22Speaker 5: This is a different process.
- 38:24Speaker 4: This is when they choose you, and so many times
- 38:27Speaker 4: it's about going to the right fit.
- 38:29Speaker 5: You know, everybody wants to get.
- 38:31Speaker 4: As drafted as early as possible because it feels good
- 38:33Speaker 4: in the moment, right that the sooner you go, the
- 38:35Speaker 4: better it feels.
- 38:36Speaker 5: The longer have to wait.
- 38:38Speaker 4: But in reality, a it's about where are you going
- 38:41Speaker 4: and are you a good fit for that scheme and
- 38:44Speaker 4: that coaching staff? And then two what do you do
- 38:47Speaker 4: with the opportunity?
- 38:48Speaker 9: Right?
- 38:48Speaker 4: So there's that instantaneous moment of hearing your name called
- 38:51Speaker 4: and watching the name go across the ticker, and that's
- 38:53Speaker 4: a great feeling. But at that moment you got to
- 38:57Speaker 4: shift gears mentally and Okay, now how am I going
- 38:59Speaker 4: to attack this next opportunity. So I'll touch base with
- 39:03Speaker 4: those guys as we get closer to Thursday, stay connected
- 39:07Speaker 4: to them. Uh, my phone has started to go like
- 39:10Speaker 4: it usually does around this time of the year, with
- 39:12Speaker 4: with with head coaches and general managers starting to call
- 39:15Speaker 4: and you know, getting that last piece of information that
- 39:17Speaker 4: they're looking forward, whether there's practice, habits off the field,
- 39:21Speaker 4: whatever those things are. But but I think a lot
- 39:24Speaker 4: of our guys are in a great spot. I'm hopeful
- 39:27Speaker 4: a ton of our guys get drafted, you know, because
- 39:29Speaker 4: I think a lot of the of our players will
- 39:31Speaker 4: really be assets for the organizations that that that that
- 39:34Speaker 4: that choose them that they go to.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and you look at the mock drafts and the
- 39:38Speaker 1: Longhorns have multiple guys going in the first round depending
- 39:41Speaker 1: on what draft you look at. But one of the
- 39:43Speaker 1: guys as a former quarterback. And we saw throughout the
- 39:47Speaker 1: draft process, between the combine and the Pro Day and
- 39:50Speaker 1: everything else like that, Sarkisian had to talk about his
- 39:54Speaker 1: former number one quarterback Queen viewers, you got to ask
- 39:56Speaker 1: a question, how gratifying it is to put a guy
- 39:59Speaker 1: in an orange playing the position that you played in
- 40:02Speaker 1: college to play the position that you coach in the
- 40:04Speaker 1: NFL quarterbacks? How gratifying is it to get Quinn into
- 40:08Speaker 1: the league.
- 40:09Speaker 4: It's exciting, you know, the quarterback thing. Obviously, just because
- 40:14Speaker 4: of my history, it kind of hits home a little
- 40:18Speaker 4: bit differently. But but I surely want every position group
- 40:23Speaker 4: group to have guys.
- 40:24Speaker 5: Getting drafted, right, I mean drafted.
- 40:26Speaker 4: And the fact that we've got more d lineman going
- 40:28Speaker 4: in the draft again this year, We've got another running
- 40:31Speaker 4: back in the draft this year, We've got more receivers,
- 40:33Speaker 4: We've we've got dbs, and so the fact that we're
- 40:37Speaker 4: we're putting players in the NFL at multiple positions, and
- 40:40Speaker 4: now here's our first, excuse me, our first quarterback. I
- 40:43Speaker 4: think is a good sign for us that we're developing
- 40:45Speaker 4: players at multiple positions, especially at that one, because it
- 40:48Speaker 4: is so critical to the success of any football team.
- 40:52Speaker 4: If you don't have a quarterback gets really hard. And
- 40:55Speaker 4: we've been fortunate to have a good one for the
- 40:57Speaker 4: last three years and Quinn it's going to make a
- 40:59Speaker 4: great pro and now we've got to recreate it here
- 41:02Speaker 4: with Arch and then Trey and kJ So it's all
- 41:06Speaker 4: part of the process. But I'm proud of Quinn. He's
- 41:09Speaker 4: worked really hard. Somebody's going to get a very good player.
- 41:12Speaker 1: And Quinn, you weers again, hope that he goes early
- 41:16Speaker 1: in the draft. You want to see his name go.
- 41:18Speaker 1: You like to have the kind of the bragging rights
- 41:22Speaker 1: obviously as a fan that, hey, my quarterback got me
- 41:25Speaker 1: to the College Bable playoffs two years in a row,
- 41:27Speaker 1: got me to the Collegeable semi finals two years in
- 41:29Speaker 1: a row. You also want to see him go to
- 41:32Speaker 1: a team where he is successful, because even if your
- 41:35Speaker 1: quarterback at the college level didn't get as many wins
- 41:38Speaker 1: as you'd like watching him win Super Bowls is gratifying.
- 41:41Speaker 1: You can ask Texas tech fans about Patrick Mahomes. You
- 41:44Speaker 1: want to see your guy go into a position that
- 41:47Speaker 1: he is going to be successful. You wanted him to
- 41:50Speaker 1: go to a position where he can find the most
- 41:53Speaker 1: success possible. And we played a little bit of the
- 41:56Speaker 1: John Gruden clips with Quinn from earlier this week where
- 42:00Speaker 1: he had a quarterback camp. Talking to Quinn about the
- 42:03Speaker 1: development and what he does on the whiteboard and his leadership.
- 42:07Speaker 1: He mentioned a former Longhorn when talking about quinn yours,
- 42:10Speaker 1: col McCoy. Cobakoy has a decade long career plus in
- 42:15Speaker 1: the NFL by being a guy that is able to
- 42:17Speaker 1: communicate with the line of scrimmage and communicate in the
- 42:20Speaker 1: locker room, something that Quinn excelled at while at the
- 42:23Speaker 1: University of Texas. But head coach Steve Sarkagan, you heard
- 42:26Speaker 1: him mention Trey and kJ Well talk about the process
- 42:31Speaker 1: not only about arch Manning who's going to be QB one,
- 42:35Speaker 1: but those guys behind him and how they developed in
- 42:38Speaker 1: that quarterback room.
- 42:39Speaker 4: You know, it's it's it's interesting to watch quarterbacks for us.
- 42:44Speaker 4: And I always say this because I think arch is
- 42:48Speaker 4: kind of the epitome of this. But I'm learning now
- 42:51Speaker 4: that we've had some scrimmages now that that Trey and
- 42:54Speaker 4: kJ fall into the same mold. There's guys that when
- 42:58Speaker 4: you are warming up and they throw a pretty ball,
- 43:01Speaker 4: and when you throw routes on air, man they can
- 43:04Speaker 4: just they don't miss. They keep throwing it perfectly and perfectly,
- 43:07Speaker 4: and then they get into seven on seven and maybe
- 43:09Speaker 4: the accuracy starts to diminish a little. And then you
- 43:12Speaker 4: get into team periods and the footwork starts getting off
- 43:16Speaker 4: and the ball's a little erratic, and then it's now
- 43:18Speaker 4: you get into a game setting and their eyes start
- 43:21Speaker 4: dropping and they're looking at the rush. These three guys
- 43:24Speaker 4: we have right here are totally opposite. When we're in walkthrough,
- 43:28Speaker 4: they're good players. I mean, they're okay, they're fine. When
- 43:31Speaker 4: we're in routes on air, I'm all over their ass
- 43:34Speaker 4: because I want more accuracy. We get into seven on seven,
- 43:38Speaker 4: it gets competitive and they start throwing a little better ball.
- 43:42Speaker 4: We get into team you can start to see the fire.
- 43:45Speaker 4: But all three of these guys this spring have played
- 43:48Speaker 4: their best when we've scrimmaged. That's a really good sign
- 43:51Speaker 4: for us that their level of play, and Tray and
- 43:54Speaker 4: kJ in particular, because I don't have as much information
- 43:57Speaker 4: on them, their level of play does this all of
- 44:00Speaker 4: a sudden. I saw kJ Lacey's mobility and athleticism show
- 44:05Speaker 4: up in Thursday night scrimmage, and him extending plays and
- 44:08Speaker 4: him coaching guys on the situations.
- 44:10Speaker 5: And him being really a really vocal legal leader.
- 44:14Speaker 4: I saw Trey Owens make a couple of really good
- 44:16Speaker 4: throws and critical moments that when we had to have
- 44:19Speaker 4: it to probably throw it better in that setting than
- 44:21Speaker 4: he did in the individual routes period. And so that's
- 44:24Speaker 4: a great sign for us. And so we can keep
- 44:27Speaker 4: working on the nuances, the footwork, those things, but the
- 44:30Speaker 4: competitive spirit is something that is hard to inject into somebody,
- 44:34Speaker 4: and those two guys definitely have that.
- 44:35Speaker 1: We'll hear more from head coach Steve Sarkijian as the
- 44:38Speaker 1: program rolls on. As we begin to hour number three
- 44:41Speaker 1: as well, we'll hear from a coach Stark. But don't
- 44:43Speaker 1: forget tomorrow. Sarkisian joins Craig Way right here on the
- 44:47Speaker 1: Cragway Show two PM hours, so you don't want to
- 44:50Speaker 1: miss it. Set your alarms for it. The head coach
- 44:53Speaker 1: of the Texas Longhorns joins Craig to talk all things
- 44:56Speaker 1: Longhorn football and of course gets you ready for the spring.
- 45:00Speaker 1: This is and the fan appreciation everything else that comes
- 45:03Speaker 1: This Saturday at a DKR. When we come back though
- 45:06Speaker 1: NBA playoffs are in full swing, I'm gonna tell you
- 45:09Speaker 1: which team must win tonight and which team is already
- 45:13Speaker 1: packing their bags to go home. All coming up next
- 45:16Speaker 1: on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone AM thirteen
- 45:20Speaker 1: hundred The Zone. Craig joins the program in the four
- 45:24Speaker 1: o'clock hour, talking Texas Baseball. He is at bobcat Ballpark
- 45:28Speaker 1: for tonight's matchup Longhorns versus Bobcats from San Marcus six pm.
- 45:34Speaker 1: First pitch on one O three one, Austin's eighty station
- 45:37Speaker 1: in your home for Texas Baseball, and make sure you
- 45:40Speaker 1: listen on the free iHeartRadio app and do an improved
- 45:43Speaker 1: app allows you to set presets. Make us your Numero
- 45:46Speaker 1: uno precepts the same way you would do it in
- 45:49Speaker 1: your car, you can do it on your app. That
- 45:52Speaker 1: is right, Make us your every one pre SAT. Make
- 45:54Speaker 1: one O three one a pre set. You can do
- 45:56Speaker 1: all of them everywhere you can. Hear Longhorn, Athletics should
- 46:00Speaker 1: be on your preset. Make life easy for you. It's easy,
- 46:04Speaker 1: easy to do, all right, So Texas, let's go here.
- 46:10Speaker 1: We'll shift gears talk NBA playoffs because the NBA playoffs
- 46:15Speaker 1: begin of or should I say begun, and the series
- 46:19Speaker 1: are only beginning because it's not a real series until
- 46:23Speaker 1: the home team loses a game. When a road dog
- 46:28Speaker 1: can go in and win a game, when a series
- 46:30Speaker 1: is tied one to one, that is when the series
- 46:34Speaker 1: truly begins. You should be able to defend home court.
- 46:38Speaker 1: You should be able to do what the Indiana Pacers
- 46:40Speaker 1: did this weekend and win Game number one against the
- 46:43Speaker 1: Milwaukee Bucks. Now the Bucks are getting Damian Lillard back.
- 46:47Speaker 1: He's a game time decision. It sounds like he's going
- 46:49Speaker 1: to be able to play with that blood clot deep
- 46:54Speaker 1: thrombosis that he had going on in his calf. It
- 46:57Speaker 1: appears that he's willing and ready to go. It's kind
- 47:00Speaker 1: of scary anytime you have a blood clot and you're
- 47:02Speaker 1: a professional athlete. Victor Woman Yama dealt with one. Had
- 47:06Speaker 1: to get surgery as well to deal with his deep
- 47:09Speaker 1: thrown bosis in his shoulder. Dane didn't have to have surgery,
- 47:13Speaker 1: just got in the blood thinners. Seems like he's will
- 47:15Speaker 1: ready to go. Seems like he's willing to go. The
- 47:17Speaker 1: Bucks and the Pacers played a night in Game number
- 47:20Speaker 1: one on NBA TV six pm tip. I am interested,
- 47:25Speaker 1: but I'm not moved. Even though Tyrese Halliburton was voted
- 47:28Speaker 1: by the players in the Athletic Poll as the most
- 47:30Speaker 1: overrated NBA player, this is a series to me between
- 47:35Speaker 1: the Bucks and the Pacers that the winner of it
- 47:37Speaker 1: will not make that much more. Know what's in the playoffs.
- 47:40Speaker 1: I don't see a world where Pacers or Bucks are
- 47:43Speaker 1: trying to win a championship this season. I just don't.
- 47:47Speaker 1: The winner of the series would play the one seed,
- 47:50Speaker 1: the Cleveland Cavaliers most likely. I'm not thrilled by that.
- 47:54Speaker 1: In the entire Midwest region it congratulations, it's Hoosier Hoops.
- 47:58Speaker 1: I'm not that moved. I am moved by the other
- 48:01Speaker 1: two games tonight because the Memphis Grizzlies fired their head coach,
- 48:06Speaker 1: and we knew that this was the beginning of the end.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Even if they're the eight seed, fire a head coach
- 48:14Speaker 1: getting rid of your general manager is not That does
- 48:17Speaker 1: not bode well for confidence in a team. It does
- 48:20Speaker 1: not bode well for me to have confidence in you.
- 48:23Speaker 1: And then losing by a historic, a record breaking fifty
- 48:27Speaker 1: one points in the playoffs, just pack your bags and
- 48:32Speaker 1: go home. Yo, you play a game two tonight in
- 48:35Speaker 1: Oklahoma City and your bags are already packed to go
- 48:37Speaker 1: to the airport and go back to Memphis. But unpack
- 48:40Speaker 1: immediately when you get home and start packing for Cancun.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Because the season's done. It's over. And I made the
- 48:47Speaker 1: point after watching the first seven minutes eight minutes of
- 48:51Speaker 1: the Thunder and Grizzlies game on Sunday. I made the
- 48:54Speaker 1: point to a friend. I said, at this point, if
- 48:56Speaker 1: this turns into a forty point blowout, can we just
- 48:58Speaker 1: cancel the series in Oklahoma City? Just protect themselves, make
- 49:02Speaker 1: sure they don't get injured, make sure their stars and
- 49:05Speaker 1: CHET and SGA are good to go for the rest
- 49:07Speaker 1: of the playoffs. Can a fifty point loss eliminate you
- 49:10Speaker 1: for the playoffs entirely? I would add for intrigue, wouldn't it.
- 49:16Speaker 1: I'm not watching a blowout, but if I know that
- 49:18Speaker 1: the winner of this game, if it turns into a
- 49:20Speaker 1: blowout and gets to a historic margin of loss that
- 49:24Speaker 1: the loser has done could put out. Don't even get
- 49:27Speaker 1: a flight back to Memphis. Have your bags travel by
- 49:31Speaker 1: themselves to Cancun with you for you go on vacation immediately,
- 49:35Speaker 1: because it looked like the Grizzlies were completely checked out.
- 49:37Speaker 1: The organization's obviously checked out if you get rid of
- 49:40Speaker 1: the head coach right before the playoffs. And John Moran
- 49:43Speaker 1: with all of the noise going around with him, the controversy,
- 49:47Speaker 1: the on court celebration issues that he's been having where
- 49:51Speaker 1: and the NBA made him a simple request. There's an
- 49:54Speaker 1: easy request. It's the same way that you asked your
- 49:56Speaker 1: kids to pick up after themselves. They asked to please
- 50:00Speaker 1: don't shoot any fans with your finger guns. Please don't
- 50:04Speaker 1: make us scene we already have in the IMAGESI we're
- 50:07Speaker 1: already struggling in the ratings. Please don't make this any
- 50:09Speaker 1: bigger a deal than it already is. And what he
- 50:12Speaker 1: did was not that start throwing grenades into the crowd.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Air grenades into the crowd. This series is done. It's
- 50:19Speaker 1: over with. Please, Oklahoma City, do us all a favor.
- 50:23Speaker 1: You're the six thirty game on TNT. At least give
- 50:26Speaker 1: us something to be excited. Give me a fifty point
- 50:29Speaker 1: SGA game. Don't foul hunt, don't don't throw your body
- 50:33Speaker 1: into guys, SGA. Please don't do that. Just give us
- 50:37Speaker 1: something to be excited about. Maybe a sixty point blowout.
- 50:41Speaker 1: Maybe could you do that for us? Because I'm not
- 50:44Speaker 1: enthused at all about this Thunder Grizzly series. I had
- 50:47Speaker 1: a little bit of hope for it, and that hope
- 50:49Speaker 1: extinguished within the first quarter of the first game in
- 50:53Speaker 1: the series. But tonight, Lakers and Grizzlies, Now that's a series.
- 50:58Speaker 1: That's a game I can get excited for. And even
- 51:00Speaker 1: though it's at nine PM, I'm gonna make myself a
- 51:02Speaker 1: pot of coffee when I get home because I can't nap,
- 51:04Speaker 1: I can't go to sleep. I have to stay up
- 51:06Speaker 1: to watch this game. I have to see what the
- 51:10Speaker 1: outcome of this one will be. Because this matchup between
- 51:14Speaker 1: the Minnesota Grizzlies and LA Lakers is by far, to me,
- 51:18Speaker 1: the most exciting matchup in the playoffs. In the NBA
- 51:22Speaker 1: Playoffs first round, this matchup excites me the most because
- 51:25Speaker 1: there is a ton of talk around Luka Dacik. There's
- 51:28Speaker 1: a ton of talk a Brown year, twenty two, Lebron James,
- 51:32Speaker 1: but all of that could come to an end with
- 51:35Speaker 1: Anthony Edwards. All that could come to a team that
- 51:38Speaker 1: went to the NBA Finals last season, blew it up,
- 51:40Speaker 1: decided to get rid of Carl Anthony Towns, decided to
- 51:43Speaker 1: bring in Julius Randall. They almost said it was too
- 51:45Speaker 1: easy last year. We want to tie our hand behind
- 51:48Speaker 1: our back. We want to make it more difficult to
- 51:50Speaker 1: try to get back to the NBA Western Conference Finals.
- 51:53Speaker 1: We want to try to make it more difficult on ourselves.
- 51:56Speaker 1: And the way we're gonna do it is we're gonna
- 51:57Speaker 1: move off of our second scoring option in Karl Anthony Towns.
- 52:00Speaker 1: We're going to send them to New York. We're going
- 52:01Speaker 1: to bring in an absolute dud in Julius Randall. But
- 52:05Speaker 1: we can do this because we know that Anthony Edwards
- 52:07Speaker 1: is that good of a player, We know that he
- 52:09Speaker 1: is that exciting a player, we know that he is
- 52:11Speaker 1: that electric of a player that we know that he's
- 52:14Speaker 1: going to be able to single handedly beat any team
- 52:17Speaker 1: that we put in front of him. And even though
- 52:20Speaker 1: there's only a game that separated them in the regular season,
- 52:23Speaker 1: the Pronostigators, the gas bags, everybody has essentially penciled the
- 52:28Speaker 1: Lakers in to the Western Conference Finals. That they said,
- 52:30Speaker 1: you know what, it doesn't matter that Minnesota has good
- 52:33Speaker 1: depth at the wing position in Nas Reed and Jayden Daniels.
- 52:38Speaker 1: It doesn't matter that Anthony Edwards is a first team
- 52:42Speaker 1: All NBA caliber player. Does not matter about any of that.
- 52:45Speaker 1: We're going to pencil Lakers into the Western Conference Finals
- 52:47Speaker 1: because they made a trade at the deadline for Luka Dacik,
- 52:52Speaker 1: and I'm hoping that that's not the case Minnesota leaves
- 52:54Speaker 1: one to zero. I'm hoping that going to LA and
- 52:56Speaker 1: take both games before coming back to Minnesota, really put
- 53:01Speaker 1: the Lakers fans in harm's way, make them concerned, make
- 53:05Speaker 1: them nervous about the rest of the series. That is
- 53:07Speaker 1: what I'm looking forward to tonight, nine pm. Minnesota and LA.
- 53:11Speaker 1: All Right, when we come back, we'll wrap up our
- 53:14Speaker 1: number two. Talk a little Texas baseball as they travel
- 53:16Speaker 1: to San Marcus take on the Bobcats this afternoon, six pm.
- 53:19Speaker 1: First pitch on one O three one. We'll have it
- 53:21Speaker 1: next on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports
- 53:34Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. As we wrap up
- 53:37Speaker 1: our number two of the craig Ways show, our three
- 53:41Speaker 1: Jam packed craig Way joins us from bobcat Ballpark to
- 53:44Speaker 1: preview Texas and Texas State tonight six pm on one
- 53:48Speaker 1: O three one. We also have you know Memphis, what
- 53:54Speaker 1: are they going to do? Taking on the Oklahoma ce
- 53:57Speaker 1: Thunder And Steve Sarcasian spoke on a series X Sam
- 54:00Speaker 1: earlier today about the transfer portal and I mentioned his
- 54:05Speaker 1: former kicker. Yeah, why did Auburn leave the University of
- 54:11Speaker 1: Texas gives us a little bit of insight on some
- 54:13Speaker 1: of those decisions made by players. Yeah, so we got
- 54:17Speaker 1: a jam packed our number three for you as well.
- 54:21Speaker 1: The Texas Baseball Steve sark or Jim Slashnagle when he
- 54:27Speaker 1: came over from Texas A and M. Obviously a lot
- 54:31Speaker 1: of fanfare, obviously a lot of expectations for this team,
- 54:34Speaker 1: and the University of Texas has been one of the
- 54:36Speaker 1: best teams in college baseball this season. Now part of
- 54:40Speaker 1: the reason that they've been able to do what they've
- 54:42Speaker 1: done this year thirty three and five record roll through teams,
- 54:47Speaker 1: roll through the SEC and be one of the best
- 54:49Speaker 1: teams in the country is because they play with fluidity.
- 54:54Speaker 1: There's not a lot of tension. It seems like there's
- 54:57Speaker 1: a lot of ability to relax. How do you play
- 55:00Speaker 1: as loose as you do?
- 55:03Speaker 11: Yeah, they're loose, this is for sure.
- 55:05Speaker 10: You know.
- 55:05Speaker 12: They they it's a slow burn for them to get
- 55:08Speaker 12: ready for a game, but once once it comes on
- 55:10Speaker 12: and they show up. So that's a tribute to the
- 55:13Speaker 12: leadership and a tribute to the not just the guys
- 55:16Speaker 12: that play, but the character the kids on the bench,
- 55:18Speaker 12: you know service and you know Jonah when he wasn't playing,
- 55:22Speaker 12: and all the other guys, the pitchers aren't pitching. You
- 55:24Speaker 12: know there it's a fun dugout to be in and
- 55:27Speaker 12: they're confident.
- 55:28Speaker 1: You don't want to jinx anything, and I jinxed it
- 55:31Speaker 1: earlier this season when you spoke about the winning streak
- 55:34Speaker 1: and everything else like that. You don't want to jinx anything.
- 55:38Speaker 1: But the Longhorns of this season have not lost a series,
- 55:41Speaker 1: they haven't lost a weekend series. To this point. They're
- 55:45Speaker 1: sixteen and two in conference play. They are one of
- 55:48Speaker 1: the best teams, one of the best hitting teams. And
- 55:50Speaker 1: even though that they've dealt with a little bit of
- 55:52Speaker 1: divert adversity when it comes to injuries. The injury bug
- 55:57Speaker 1: comes from everybody. Nobody's spared from injuries. Season in Max
- 56:00Speaker 1: Blue being the largest name that has dealt with an injury,
- 56:04Speaker 1: a thumb injury that led to surgery out six weeks.
- 56:08Speaker 1: He may be back for a tournament time. He may
- 56:10Speaker 1: be back for a run, come playoff, come NCAA tournament time.
- 56:15Speaker 1: But you don't want to put any eggs in that basket.
- 56:17Speaker 1: You want him to heal up completely, and then you
- 56:19Speaker 1: have to find how do you fill that hole in
- 56:21Speaker 1: left field. Long words have been able to do it,
- 56:23Speaker 1: but it is still something that they struggle with. Obviously,
- 56:27Speaker 1: this has been one of the best team's point plank period,
- 56:31Speaker 1: one of the best first seasons for any coaching college
- 56:34Speaker 1: baseball that Jim Slashnangle has been able to put together
- 56:37Speaker 1: for Texas. Now they go to Texas State this evening,
- 56:41Speaker 1: a six pm first pitch. You're worried about who the
- 56:45Speaker 1: starting pitcher will be. You want to save pitching for
- 56:48Speaker 1: this weekend series against Texas A and M. Obviously there's
- 56:51Speaker 1: a rivalry there. Obviously, you want to defend your home
- 56:55Speaker 1: field too, and this is the first time that Jim
- 56:58Speaker 1: Slashnangle faced off against his former time team in the Yankees.
- 57:01Speaker 1: There's a lot of secondary storylines here. There's a lot
- 57:04Speaker 1: of stuff that's going on behind the scenes. There's a
- 57:07Speaker 1: lot of stuff going on on the internet when it
- 57:09Speaker 1: comes to the weekend series. But you got to focus
- 57:11Speaker 1: on the task at hands in that against Texas State.
- 57:14Speaker 1: Are you worried We've mentioned about winning sixteen games in
- 57:17Speaker 1: the SEC to this point, Are you worried about peaking
- 57:19Speaker 1: too early?
- 57:20Speaker 2: No?
- 57:21Speaker 11: I know, I mean, I don't you know you want to.
- 57:23Speaker 12: I mean, we're certainly playing without Blu and got guys
- 57:26Speaker 12: playing out a position. But but no, there's I mean,
- 57:31Speaker 12: Tennessee won the national championship last year and they peaked
- 57:33Speaker 12: pretty much through all sixty games or however many it was.
- 57:37Speaker 1: See, that's what you like to hear too from your
- 57:38Speaker 1: head coaches. Hey, we're not peaking early. We have a standard,
- 57:41Speaker 1: we have a consistency. We're trying to keep that consistency.
- 57:44Speaker 1: We're trying to continue to roll win over win over,
- 57:48Speaker 1: win over win. And like I said, tonight's matchup against
- 57:51Speaker 1: Texas State is not an easy matchup by any means.
- 57:55Speaker 1: This is a team in the Bobcats that have been
- 57:57Speaker 1: up and down the season. They're below five hundred conference play.
- 57:59Speaker 1: They struggle at home for some odd reason, but they
- 58:05Speaker 1: show up against Texas power for teams against Baylor, TCU,
- 58:11Speaker 1: Texas A and M and Texas. This is a team
- 58:13Speaker 1: that consistently for whatever reason, whether it be because the
- 58:17Speaker 1: ballpark is completely packed, whether it be because Texas has
- 58:20Speaker 1: a bulls eye on their back as a top five
- 58:22Speaker 1: team in the country, whether it be because they are
- 58:25Speaker 1: the number one flagship program in the state, whatever it be.
- 58:30Speaker 1: You get your best games when the long Runs come
- 58:32Speaker 1: to town. You get you play your best games when
- 58:35Speaker 1: Texas comes to town. And that loss earlier this season,
- 58:39Speaker 1: a five to three loss at home against the Bobcats,
- 58:42Speaker 1: I can't imagine is probably in the back of some
- 58:46Speaker 1: players' minds this afternoon that this is not a game
- 58:51Speaker 1: that you're going to take lightly by any means. This
- 58:54Speaker 1: is a team in the Longhorns that wants to win,
- 58:58Speaker 1: and maybe again it's best dish best served on the road.
- 59:04Speaker 1: When you go down the records of both these teams
- 59:06Speaker 1: when they play each other. In the last five years,
- 59:08Speaker 1: the Texas State has done very well in Austin for
- 59:11Speaker 1: some reason, and the Longhorns have done even better in
- 59:14Speaker 1: San Marcos. We'll talk to Craig about it. Coming up
- 59:17Speaker 1: in the next hour at four seventeen, he'll join the
- 59:19Speaker 1: program with Keith Morland from the ballpark to preview this
- 59:24Speaker 1: afternoon's matchup. But I want to get this in here,
- 59:26Speaker 1: a little NFL news and notes for you. Peter Schreiger
- 59:30Speaker 1: was on Get Up this morning talking about phone calls
- 59:35Speaker 1: being made in the top half of this year's NFL draft.
- 59:38Speaker 13: There have been phone calls made to both the Browns
- 59:41Speaker 13: at two and the Giants at three with the intention
- 59:46Speaker 13: to move up from several different sources telling me there
- 59:49Speaker 13: are teams who are looking to get up in this
- 59:51Speaker 13: draft to either the two or the three spot. The
- 59:53Speaker 13: assumption being to move up to the two or the
- 59:55Speaker 13: three spot would be four Abdulla Carter, Travis Hunter or
- 1:00:00Speaker 13: the running back Ashton Genty, who everyone expects to go
- 1:00:04Speaker 13: somewhere in that five to seven to eight range. There
- 1:00:08Speaker 13: have been teams making calls, and those teams are not
- 1:00:11Speaker 13: immediately slamming down the phone the Browns at two the
- 1:00:15Speaker 13: Giants at three.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: So some of you keep your eye on. As we
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: get more and more mock drafts, as we see more
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: and more information, and the NFL gms have their final
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: press conferences today before Thursday's NFL Draft. Maybe we see
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: some moves happening in the next forty eight hours, is ish.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Maybe we see some moves occurring in the next two
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: days between teams trading up and trading back. I am
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: still very much on the side of you do not
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: draft a running back. I don't care how good Ashton
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Gent is. I don't care how good O'mary Hampton is.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I'm going for the trenches offensive defensive line, and I'm
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: looking for team needs. If you're the Dallas Cowboys, the
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Houston Texans, or whatever team, I'm not going and drafting
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: a running back so high, let alone trading picks or
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: pieces or money or players to try to move up
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: into the top three to go get a running back.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: With that being said, if you are the Cleveland Browns
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: or the New York Giants and you know we're going
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: after a quarterback, we know that quarterbacks are not going
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: to go very quickly in this draft, that this is
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: a draft that is quarterback heavy, with Jackson Dart and
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Will Howard and quinn Ewers, who will all be available
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: potentially on day number two. Maybe I do trade back,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Maybe I do try to get a treasure chest of picks,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: and maybe I can go get a player and build
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: for the future, turn a top five pick into multiple
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: picks later in this draft and maybe next year's first
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: round or second round. If I'm a team with that pick,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: I don't mind moving off of it if I know
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: that the guy that I really want or the position
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: that I really need is available later in the draft.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Peter Schreger get up earlier this morning on ESPN, saying
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: the phones are ringing, people are wanting to make deals.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: It comes down to will the Browns or the Giants
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: make a move to trade back. We'll find out all
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: right when we come back our number three of The
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: Cragway Show, Steve Souskejan spoke to the media. He also
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: talked about the transfer portal and bert Auburn leaving all
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: coming up next on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrew Zim We'll
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: hanging out with you this Tuesday, a Tuesday edition of
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: The Craigway Show. As we roll into our number three
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: of the program. Make sure you go listen to the
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: podcast if you missed any of the fun that we've
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: had this afternoon. Craig joins the program later this hour
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: from bobcat Ballpark is the Texas Longhorns and Texas State.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Bobcats get ready to go on the Diamonds six pm,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: first pitch on one O three one, Austin's eighty station.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Can hear it on the free and new and improved
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app as well. A lot of different ways you
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: can listen a lot of different ways. You can set
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: us as your preset as well, but we're checking all
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: the boxes. We're doing everything we need to do. Set
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: us in your pre set and listen to Craig this
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: evening with Keith Morland on the call on one oh
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: three one. As Texas takes on Texas State, It's going
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: to be a good game. Bobcats consistently give a lot
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: more fight, it seems, when it comes to Longhorns and
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Aggie's and Baylor Bears and horn Frugs than they do
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: when it comes to the Sunbelt Conference. It's been a
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: head scratcher for me. It's been a head scratcher for
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Podcat fans. Tonight's matchup is going to be an exciting one.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: I went back and forth. I was predicting a score
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: of a friend of mine who went to Texas State
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: with me, and I said seven to Texas. He said, you
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: know the way Texas State plays Power four teams inconceivably
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: better than they play their conference opponents. He said, give
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: me five four Texas State. So it's going to be
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: a good game either way. We have Craig joining us later.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: We also have NBA playoff talk. We need to get into.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Did Kawhi Leonard's playoff game last night? Thirty nine points
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: on efficient shooting jump him up your all time legacy list?
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Is this legacy series for Kawhi Leonard and then LA Clippers.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: We'll talk about it later in the hour as well.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: And Steve Sarkejian spoke to the media. He also spoke
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: to Series XM's College Sports Danny Kelly and uh It
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: was one of the guys who was interviewing him this
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: morning on the show, and he talked about building environment
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: and the transfer portal. Obviously, transfer portal nil two of
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: the buzzwords, two of the things that college sports fans
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: and the media general gravitate to we want to hear
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: about how coaches are re recruiting. Anytime I bring any
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: coach on my podcast, I asked them about, Hey, what
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: did you say to this individual or that individual, whether
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: it be a high school recruit or a recruit the
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: transfer portal? What did you sell them on your program?
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: How did you sell them on the campus? How do
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: you sell them on the culture? You want to build
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: something where you're at. If you're a college sports coach,
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: men's sports, women's sports, football, hockey, does not matter. You're
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: trying to build an environment. Sarkisian spoke at length about
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: building that in this transfer portal era.
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: We've tried to create an environment that one is fair.
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: I'm not going to sit here and say that, hey,
- 1:05:20Speaker 7: our guests don't have nil that I'm not I'm not
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: gonna I'm not.
- 1:05:23Speaker 11: Going to do that.
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: But the point is we try to be fair. We
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: try to be honest. We try to be transparent as
- 1:05:28Speaker 7: far as where guys are at in our program, what
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: they need to work on, what they're doing right, maybe
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: what they can improve upon. You know that we even
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: added here is really simple. The standard is a standard,
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: and if you're not meeting that standard, then then it's
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: our responsibility to let you know.
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: And if you're.
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: Exceeding the standard, it's our responsibility to let you know.
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: And that's as a team, that's as individual players in
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: the program.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: See that's huge to me because what you want out
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: of your head coach, your boss, your manager does not matter.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: The person who is in charge of you helping you
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: with your growth, whether it be on the football field,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: the classroom, or in your work. You want that person
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: to give you insight on what you're doing well and
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: what you can do better. That is what you're asking for.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: That is a simple ask and to say, hey, we're
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: building an environment that we're telling guys when they come
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: into the program, this is where you're going to be.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Do you know how many of these transfer portal stories
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: would be solved if the head coach was just completely transparent,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: if the assistant coach who was recruiting the kid was
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: completely transparent. I know, I'm living in wonderland, I'm living
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: in a rainbow world asking for this, but it makes
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: it so much easier in life's so much simpler. If
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: you have an eighteen to twenty two year old who's
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: calling you asking about your program and you tell them
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: straight up, listen, you come here, you're going to be
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: wide receiver two, you're going to be wide receiver four.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: You're going to get playing time. Well, in fact that
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: this position there's not a lot of playing time, and
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: in this defensive scheme, you're not going to see the
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: field as much as a nickel. Okay, you know how
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: much simpler life would be if head coaches and coaches
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: just in general and college sports were transparent. And you'll
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: hear coaches say, well, we try to be as transparent
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: as we can be. Maybe that I tend to believe
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: that when you're talking to Steve Starkesian from what he
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: said to West's media members and the information I've gotten
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: from other head coaches, and I have the information I've
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: gotten from other coaches in college sports that this is
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: one of those programs in the University of Texas, it's
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: relatively transparent. That's pretty hey, upfront, above board, everything's on
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: the table. Let's have an honest discussion on this conversation.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Years prior, twenty thirty years ago, you might have had
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: a coach who's gonna lie to a kid because you're
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: not going to transfer and if you do transfer, you
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: got to waste a year of eligibility. So if I
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: can get you in the building, odds are I'm keeping
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: you here for four years. Kid, I'm sorry you don't
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: like insert university here, but you nowhere else you can go.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: There's nowhere else you can what you can do, There's
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: nowhere you can go. But now it's a fluid situation.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: So you not only have to recruit a kid, but
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: you have to re recruit the kid. And if you're
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: going to be completely honest with him and transparent with him,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: like Steve Sarkisian says that he is, and that he
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: says the Longhorns are that helps build trust, helps build culture,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: and it keeps the standard being the standard. But sometimes
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: guys do leave. In the case of Burt Auburn, the
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: kicker for the Longhorns, and he spoke about not only
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: that situation, but guys leaving in general.
- 1:08:32Speaker 7: I think we've created an environment where guys really want
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: to be here. They don't have to be here. They're
- 1:08:37Speaker 7: working towards a common goal. There's a commitment towards something
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: that when I mentioned the portal opening the day that
- 1:08:43Speaker 7: it opened, we didn't have anybody kind of going in
- 1:08:45Speaker 7: before and open. I said, I hope, I hope nobody
- 1:08:48Speaker 7: wants to leave. You know, I know a lot of
- 1:08:50Speaker 7: programs should try to create space and move players. I said,
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: I hope nobody else wants to leave. I hope that
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: we've created an environment for you here that makes it
- 1:08:59Speaker 7: really different cult for you to want to leave, and
- 1:09:01Speaker 7: understandably so that some of you probably will have to,
- 1:09:05Speaker 7: just because that's the nature of the beast. And unfortunately
- 1:09:07Speaker 7: we've had a couple of guys going. We'd had a
- 1:09:09Speaker 7: kicker go in that man. He was he was a
- 1:09:12Speaker 7: kicker for us for three years and made some massive kicks,
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: but because it's going into a senior year in a
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: competition all these things, he felt like he had to
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: move on. And I understand that in Burt Auburn, but man,
- 1:09:23Speaker 7: those are hard guys to leave your program.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Yeah, especially not only a kicker in Burt Auburn who
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: was relatively good. I know Longhorn fans online weren't exactly
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: thrilled them sometimes, but I always considered him a pretty
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: standard college kicker all things being equal. Now, the Longhorns
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: did get Mason Shipley to replace him in the transfer portal,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: and a Shipley is a very good kicker, So it's
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: not like it's a complete loss at that position, but
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: it is a loss of knowledge when it comes to
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: the program. Now, again, if you're a college sports fan,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: you may have a love hate relationship with your kicker.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: You might have had a love hate relationship with Auburn. Okay,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: that's completely fine, and you're going to have to work
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: through whatever you're working through here when it comes to
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: college kickers. I know I go to therapy at least
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: once a week during the college football season because of
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: some college kickers. Okay, I'll be honest with you. But
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: the institutional knowledge that you lose in the portal, whether
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: it be a long staff or a kicker, a gunner
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: on the special teams, if they've been in your program
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: for three years, that's three years of leadership. That's three
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: years of guys who have come through and given them
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: knowledge and given them ways that not only the program works,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: but the school works, and the coaching staff work in
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: the training room works. And again, very few college fans
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: are going to shed many tiers over their college kicker leaving, right,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: just that's not the nature of the beast, but it
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: is important. It is something that we need to take
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: into account. It is something that needs to be brought
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: up and needs to be thought about, and it's important
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: to hear Sark talk about, Hey, we're trying to build
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: a culture here that nobody wants to leave. All of
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: us who weren't college athletes. If you went to college
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: and you majored in fun like a lot of us did,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: the best time of your life is college. If you're
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: a college athlete, you want that to be similar. Now,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: obviously you can't have nearly as much fun as a
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: chat and Tha at Delta House, right, but you want
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: to have fun. You want when you walk across the
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: stage there to be a panang of sadness that you're
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: leaving the institution. When I go through my college town,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: I have to stop constantly. I have to pull over,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: go to a place that I went when I was
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: there and say, hey, I'm back, I'm back. I missed it.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: You miss your college town. That's what you want to do.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: And when you're a college athlete, you want your athletes
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: to miss the organization. You want your athletes to want
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: to give back, obviously, and that's exactly why Longhorns aren't
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: suffering like other teams are with guys jumping in the
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: transfer portal immediately. That's why the Longhorns aren't struggling with
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: getting guys on campus and keeping them on campus. Yeah,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: it helps to have the Longhorn on the side of
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: the helmet, and it helps with the nil deals that
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: Sark spoke about. But there's a lot more that goes
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: into it, all right, when we come back more Texas
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: Longhorn Baseball as Craig Way, Keith Morland at the ballpark
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: and Nico Harrison. I'm wanting you to have a documentary series.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: Charles Barkin's asking to shut your mouth. You decide what
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: you're gonna do, all right, when we come back, More
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: on the Craigway Show on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: zim will hanging out with you this Tuesday afternoon. Now,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: Nico Harrison has been an enigma wrapped in a riddle
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: for some people because he decided to trade his franchise.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: Is best player in Luca Dancik two the LA Lakers,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: who are now battling for their lives in Game number two,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: tonight in LA against the Ministerta Timberwolves. But Nico has
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: heard a lot, and we'll get to some of his
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: quotes here in a second, but it really says something
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: when it goes over the top, when it gets to
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: the point where you have guys like the General Mana,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: you're an owner of the Dallas Cowboys winging in.
- 1:13:23Speaker 14: Well, I'm a fan of the Mavericks, big fan of
- 1:13:25Speaker 14: the Mavericks, and consequently a big fan of Luco. The
- 1:13:33Speaker 14: world knows that I've got my hands full thinking about
- 1:13:36Speaker 14: what we think about over here, much less trying to
- 1:13:39Speaker 14: figure out I look at the Mavericks through very much
- 1:13:43Speaker 14: entertainment I and I know Luca was a personal friend
- 1:13:49Speaker 14: and watched a lot of games with us and would
- 1:13:54Speaker 14: hope that he would be able to watch more games
- 1:13:56Speaker 14: with us as we go along. Know his family pretty well,
- 1:14:00Speaker 14: and there's support staff pretty well. So all of that
- 1:14:04Speaker 14: is just one as a fan.
- 1:14:07Speaker 11: Now, Jane was.
- 1:14:10Speaker 14: All State, scored seventeen straight free throws in the state
- 1:14:14Speaker 14: championship game, and Jane lives and dies with that basketball
- 1:14:19Speaker 14: and just cried when Luca left. But I understand that,
- 1:14:25Speaker 14: and I understand frankly, you say how could that happen.
- 1:14:29Speaker 14: I've got a little bit probably better understanding how something
- 1:14:33Speaker 14: like that can happen.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: I was going through I was trying to find a
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: player that the Dallas Cowboys have traded. It's to the
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: level that Luka Doncik Is or ever was. And he's
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: at the ballpark right now. We'll get his thoughts on
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: this here, Craig. Do you remember a Dallas Cowboy player
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: as big of a deal as Luca that got moved
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: in the Jerry Jones era?
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: Not moved in terms of trade, but unsigned, unresigned you
- 1:15:04Speaker 6: might say, allowed to leave via free agency. Then I
- 1:15:10Speaker 6: would say you could go down that road. But I mean,
- 1:15:13Speaker 6: you know, for example, there were some things in place,
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: like at the end of Emmett Smith's era, they weren't
- 1:15:19Speaker 6: going to resign him. He winds up going to the Cardinals,
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: and then he comes back to retire as a cowboy,
- 1:15:26Speaker 6: you know.
- 1:15:26Speaker 11: Things like that.
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: But not a superstar in his prime or coming into
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: his prime that they just up and traded away.
- 1:15:38Speaker 11: No, that I don't remember.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: No, That's what I've been saying this entire time. Now,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Craig Way, he's at Bobcat Ballpark for tonight's matchup between
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: the Texas Longhorns and Texas State Bobcat six pm, first
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: pitch on one O three one, US's eighty station on
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: the free iHeartRadio app. Craig, thanks for joining us. Let's
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: get into it. This is a redemption game. Is the
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: revenge game for the Texas Longhorns after losing in Austin
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: the last time these two teams played.
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: Yeah, let me put it to you this way, Zim
- 1:16:09Speaker 6: that they want to win this game. It is a
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: midweek game, It is a it is a game. It
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: affects your RPI. If they were to lose tonight, they
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: would probably take a little bit of an RPI hit
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: their number two in the country in the RPI. And
- 1:16:24Speaker 6: I was just talking about this just a moment ago
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: with Jim Slasnagel down on the field. We had a
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: unique situation over the weekend where the Longhorns won all
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: three of their games. They swept the eighth ranked team
- 1:16:38Speaker 6: in the country. They beat Auburn and moved one spot
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: from three to two. Georgia got swept over the weekend,
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: but it was on the road, it was at Vanderbilt,
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: and they moved to number one in the RPI, And
- 1:16:54Speaker 6: I said, do you find that kind of intriguing and
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: he said yeah, but he said, what I've learned over
- 1:17:00Speaker 6: time is the SEC kind of takes care of its own,
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: both good and bad. You know, you can kind of
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: cannibalize on one another, but it also build your strength
- 1:17:09Speaker 6: and your RPI and things like that. And he said,
- 1:17:12Speaker 6: if we're winning the games we're supposed to win and
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: doing those things, then I think will be okay. But
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: you know, you don't want to lose a midweek road
- 1:17:21Speaker 6: non conference team to a conference game to a sub
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: five hundred team. I'll grant you that they would rather
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: not have that happen. So yeah, I don't know so
- 1:17:30Speaker 6: much as the revenge thing really kicks in, because they
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: do play twice a year, you know, every year they
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: play two times in a season, once in Austin and
- 1:17:40Speaker 6: once in San Marcus.
- 1:17:41Speaker 11: And I think that's good.
- 1:17:42Speaker 6: And I asked Loss about that, the fact that they
- 1:17:45Speaker 6: could play, you know, because you don't get many opportunities
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: when you're a Marque Division one program to play many.
- 1:17:53Speaker 11: Road, non conference.
- 1:17:55Speaker 6: Midweek games because it doesn't do you that much good. Now, yes,
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: get a little bit of an RPI bump if you're
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: playing on the road. But a lot of times you're
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: playing a mid major team like this one out of
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: the Sunbelt or maybe at Uta or when they went
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: to UTRGV or Sam Houston. You know that kind of thing,
- 1:18:12Speaker 6: but you're not getting like a huge bump. It's a
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: little bit different in the South. I will tell you this, Andrew,
- 1:18:19Speaker 6: because some highly ranked teams are not far apart, like
- 1:18:24Speaker 6: Clemson and Georgia are playing tonight.
- 1:18:26Speaker 11: That's a good matchup.
- 1:18:27Speaker 6: You know, Clemson South Carolina have met in the midweek.
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: North Carolina and South Carolina. You know, when you're within
- 1:18:34Speaker 6: bus driving bus riding distance, it kind of makes sense.
- 1:18:38Speaker 6: But you know, when you got a huge series like
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: they have coming up against Texas A and M, it's
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: good to have this one as a road game when
- 1:18:47Speaker 6: it's only a thirty minute bus ride away or thirty
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: five minutes whatever. So so that's why it works out
- 1:18:53Speaker 6: really well. And the fact they do play home and
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: home every year helps. And you pointed out earlier in
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: the program it's a range thing.
- 1:19:01Speaker 11: But over the.
- 1:19:02Speaker 6: Past few years, each team has had more success in
- 1:19:07Speaker 6: the other team's ballpark. Texas State has won four in
- 1:19:09Speaker 6: a row at UFCU just fog Field. The Longhorns have
- 1:19:12Speaker 6: won five in a row here at bobcat Ballpark. Last
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: time Texas State beat Texas was pre pandemic twenty nineteen.
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: So the teams know each other well, the programs know
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: each other well, and we know that Texas State and
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: they did this in the game in Austin, will if
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: they have a shot to win the game, roll into
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: their weekend starters to try to preserve it, to get
- 1:19:38Speaker 6: an RPI boosting victory. So that's just part of the thing.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: So let's talk pitching, because I think that's a really
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: big deal the Long Horns. The last time these two
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: teams played, they had Georgia coming up the next weekend.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: It was a top three team in the country. This
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: weekend they have Texas A and M. Not a top
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: three team, but obviously a big weekend series. Will the
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: Long Horns dip into that weekend pitching? What do you
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: see in that story the lineup today?
- 1:20:01Speaker 11: No, and I will tell you. I will tell you this, Andrew.
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: They you remember before the Georgia game when they had
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: the midweek and largely largely during the midweek, they've had
- 1:20:15Speaker 6: Kate bing going left hander, but because of what's happened
- 1:20:20Speaker 6: most recently with Jared Spencer, their Friday Night started going down.
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: And again, folks who listened to the pregame and our
- 1:20:27Speaker 6: pregame against at five point forty five on one of
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: three point one FM, those who are listening to the
- 1:20:33Speaker 6: pregame will hear Schlas talk a little bit about this.
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: Why Kate bing is not starting to night because with
- 1:20:40Speaker 6: Spencer being out at least for the time being, and
- 1:20:43Speaker 6: until they get some more medical evaluation back, it may
- 1:20:47Speaker 6: be a while before they get him back. So they're
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: having a shovel shuffle. They're starting rotation. I think we'll
- 1:20:53Speaker 6: see Ruger y Ojas the you know utsa transfer young
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: man from Wimberley. He's been there number three weekend starting.
- 1:21:01Speaker 6: He's been going on Sundays or in the case of
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: this past weekend a Thursday Friday Saturday set up.
- 1:21:07Speaker 11: He's been going on Saturday.
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: He only threw thirty eight pitches on Saturday, and that
- 1:21:11Speaker 6: was by design. He had three innings, gave up the
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: one solo homer, but that was its and he's been really,
- 1:21:17Speaker 6: really good. I think the plan down the road and
- 1:21:20Speaker 6: it's nothing's final or finalized yet, but I think the
- 1:21:24Speaker 6: plan would probably to be to move Ruger Riojas into
- 1:21:31Speaker 6: the Friday night start for now, keep Luke Harrison on Saturday,
- 1:21:35Speaker 6: and then probably Jason Flores on Sunday in addition to that.
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: And again those who are listening to Pregamel will hear
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: Schloss talk about this. They're gonna need Kate being in
- 1:21:47Speaker 6: some role at some point during the weekend, so he
- 1:21:51Speaker 6: comes off of the start tonight when he's been the
- 1:21:55Speaker 6: normal midweek guy, and it's gonna be Grayson Sandier, who
- 1:21:59Speaker 6: is the trans for from Ole, Miss and Grayson is
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: the guy who has looked really sharp of late. He
- 1:22:04Speaker 6: gave them some outstanding work in the series at Kentucky
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: and he did pitch last Tuesday night in the winter
- 1:22:10Speaker 6: for UTRGV. So they're gonna start with Sonia tonight the
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: right hander, and then they'll move from there and see
- 1:22:17Speaker 6: where it leads them.
- 1:22:19Speaker 11: But that's all.
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: This is all a trickle down to getting ready for
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: this huge series. As you pointed out of Texas A
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: and M, no A and M isn't a top ten
- 1:22:29Speaker 6: team yet. Remember however, they were the preseason number one.
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: They had a really difficult start with Michael Hurley as
- 1:22:36Speaker 6: the head coach, replacing Jim Schlaisnegel.
- 1:22:38Speaker 11: They were one and nine.
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: In the SECS, and they won seven of their last
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: eight conference games and one eight in a row. So
- 1:22:48Speaker 6: they're eight and ten. They're on a roll, and they're
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: back in the projections as making a regionable regional which
- 1:22:54Speaker 6: would have seemed inconceivable a couple of weeks ago. Well,
- 1:22:58Speaker 6: now they're back in the thick of the fight. And
- 1:23:01Speaker 6: by the way, it is Texas versus Texas A and
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: m it is Logorns versus Aggie's. It is the Cotton
- 1:23:07Speaker 6: Holdings Lone Star Showdown rivalry series, so he got all
- 1:23:11Speaker 6: of that rolled into it as well for a big
- 1:23:13Speaker 6: Friday Saturday Sunday series. So the trickle down from all
- 1:23:16Speaker 6: of that is, especially with some pitching staff injuries, to
- 1:23:20Speaker 6: keep as many long distance arms available as possible. And
- 1:23:24Speaker 6: that's why being isn't starting tonight, and that's why it'll
- 1:23:26Speaker 6: be Grays and Sonier See.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: And I like Kate bing Craig. I feel like he's
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: been the guy this season that when you hear Jim
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Slashtegal talk about him, I'm always like, be nice if
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: I guy cave Man. I like that guy, so I'm
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: glad to see that he's worked his way into the
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: weekend rotation, even if it's because of injuries.
- 1:23:43Speaker 11: There's two guys, Zim.
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: There are two guys who are not weekend starters, but
- 1:23:50Speaker 6: who could be really really critical pieces for Texas going
- 1:23:54Speaker 6: forward in the pitching. One is Kate Being the others
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: Max Grubbs, and you know, Grubbs came on after Jared
- 1:24:01Speaker 6: Spincher had to leave the game injured early and did
- 1:24:04Speaker 6: a marvelous job. Those two guys are the two guys
- 1:24:08Speaker 6: that can bridge it to the back end of the bullpen.
- 1:24:11Speaker 6: And I think Schloss wants to set it up that way.
- 1:24:17Speaker 6: And you got a left and you got a righty
- 1:24:19Speaker 6: that way too, You've got some more flexibility.
- 1:24:22Speaker 11: They are more options.
- 1:24:23Speaker 6: So I think that's what his mindset is on that,
- 1:24:25Speaker 6: and that's another reason why Sonia gets the start tonight.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: So finally, Craig, last things before we let you go
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: here Texas Tonight Texas State, six PM, one, O three one, airtime,
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: five point forty five in the pre game. What else
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: do we need to know about this matchup?
- 1:24:39Speaker 6: Well, it's interesting Texas State is starting a guy named
- 1:24:44Speaker 6: Austin Eaton. Now, Eaton is two and two and a
- 1:24:49Speaker 6: seven two five ERA, but Austin Eaton is far more
- 1:24:53Speaker 6: than a pitcher. He is on the two way player
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: watch list. He can swing a back. He's hit four
- 1:25:01Speaker 6: home runs this year, He's driven in thirteen runs. I
- 1:25:04Speaker 6: would expect to see Austin Eaton listed a pitcher slash DH.
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: And what that means is, you know, he would go
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: ahead while he's pitching, he would take at bats, and
- 1:25:14Speaker 6: that means you can't have another DH. However, it also
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: means this, say Austin Eaton doesn't have it on the
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: mount and has to come out after two innings. He's
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: stay in the game is the DH. He's just no
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: longer the pitcher. So I think we may see something
- 1:25:28Speaker 6: like that from Steven Trout tonight for Texas State. So
- 1:25:31Speaker 6: and like you said, it's been a good series and
- 1:25:35Speaker 6: it's very competitive and they really do like to beat
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: one another. So you know, it wouldn't surprise me at
- 1:25:40Speaker 6: all to see move made on top of move.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: With that, I'm excited for it tonight at six pm,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: first pitch Texas State and Texas don I'm gonna listen
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: to you, Craig. Obviously I might have to drive up
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: there to see the game as well, though.
- 1:25:54Speaker 11: See if you can get in the ballpark.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: Yes, standing rum only. But you know me, I'm a
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: big deal over there, Craig. I think I can make
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: it happen.
- 1:26:01Speaker 11: Yeah, you carry your own weight in there.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: No doubt, Craig Way. Thanks so much, man, You bet
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: Jim all right, The Craig Way Show rolls on.
- 1:26:09Speaker 6: Here.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: We'll hear from Steve's Arkeesian as he has media availability
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: before this weekend's spring practice. We're coming up next on
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: hundred The Zone. Craig Way will be on the call
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: tonight from Bobcat Ballpark as the Longhorns and Bobcats do
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: battle on the Diamond six pm, first pitch, five forty
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: five airtime you hear on one of the three to
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: one Austin's eighty station as well as on the always
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: free iHeartRadio app. I was telling Craig, I might have
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: to go up there. It's only like a forty five
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: minute drive. We get off there at five, get up
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: there by five forty five. Sweet talk the ticket lady
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: I think I could make it happen. I think it
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: can make it happen. And then, of course, because I
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: have the free iHeart Radio app and I have my EarPods,
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: I could listen to Craig call the game might be
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: the move. We'll see if we get it done well.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: Kind of depends on what traffic. We'll check our the
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: ways out before we head out, all right. Steve Sarkisian
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: spoke today at length about his program about where this
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: program is going into the spring. Obviously, you're not a
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: fully formed team just yet. However, it seems like things
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: are moving in the right direction on the forty acres.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: This was head coach Steve Sarkisian's opening statements.
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: Obviously, in the final week of spring practice, and we
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: really just want to maximize these final three days, which
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: I thought we did a pretty good job of that
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: with the start of it today. You know, I think
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: everybody in the organization has a thing two, three, ten
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: that that we can improve upon, and if we can
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: really focus in on those things over the next few days,
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: all the way through Saturday morning, I think we'll be
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: at a lot better place come June when we come
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: back and start our summer program as we get ready.
- 1:27:53Speaker 5: For fall camp.
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: So it's been a good spring up to this point.
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: A lot of guys have improved. But as I've said
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: early on, and we never should be in spring. We're
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: not a finished product and nobody is as individuals. We're
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: clearly not in any phase of our team right now.
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: So we got work to do.
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: But I appreciate the guys coming with the right intent
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: like they did this morning.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: Head coach to Sarcasian. Now, we've heard a lot of
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: talk this offseason about Texas, and not only Texas but
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: other teams when it comes to the general manager role.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: We've saw that guys are hiring general managers. I even
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: saw his video of Andrew Luckett practice for Stanford being
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: the scout team. QB. You're looking at more quarterbacks and
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: more i should say, more former players coming into the
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: space taking over that general manager role, becoming almost like
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: a head football ahead of football operate, headed coach of
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: football operations. So Joe Man, general manager of football operations
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: Sarkisia got asked this question. He says, not as long
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: as I'm at the helm. But then he continued talking
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: about what that looks like in that power, dynamic behind
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: the scenes.
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: Right, Well, I think like anything. You know, look at
- 1:29:05Speaker 4: the thirty two organizations in the NFL. Not all of
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: them are structured the same, right, They're all structured differently.
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: You know, who's got final say, who's you know, who's
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: in charge? What is the dynamic of the program, what
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: does it look like?
- 1:29:20Speaker 7: You know?
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: Like I said, I've been fortunate to work for two
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: really good men that worked in the NFL and in
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: college football, and Pete Carroll and Nick Saban, And you know,
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: I studied under those guys.
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: I looked at the way they they they manage their time.
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: I look at how they distributed responsibilities. But at the
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: end of the day, they were the one making those
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: choices and decisions.
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: You know, I know this much.
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: When we lose Saturday, I'm the one that sits in
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: front of you guys and have to answer those questions.
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: When we win, I have to sit in front of
- 1:29:51Speaker 4: you and answer those questions. And so surely I'm going
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: to make the decisions that try to put us in
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: the best position to be successful. But I'm also going
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: to try to around myself with really quality people, whether
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: that's in in the recruiting and scouting department, whether that's coaches,
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: whether that's play callers, whatever, whether it's you know, all
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: those people are fundraisers because we we've got a really
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: good team and it and it takes a great team
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: to execute at this level the way that we have been.
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: But ultimately, I've either got to make the decision or
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: I've got okay these decisions because I'm the one that's
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: ultimately responsible for them, and so I try to look
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: at it from from that frame of mind.
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and you could also be the general manager like
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: Nico Harrison and just give away the farm. Uh No.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: Sarcasian brings up a good point. The reason that college
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: coaches are revered the way they are, whether it be
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: Bobby Bowden or Nick Saban or Steve Sarcasian the ability
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: to not only recruit well, but higher well, but also
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: connect with your players. There's a lot that goes into it.
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: And if you become a general manager type where you
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: have a guy making the decisions for you, making and
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: I deals for you, making roster moves for you, you
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: lose a little bit of the autonomy that you have
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: as a college football coach. And I continue to say
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: a big reason that college football coaches work at the
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: college level and don't work at the NFL is because
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: of the you might say micromanaging, but you want to
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: say the control that you have over the organization. Look
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: at Urban Meyer. Urban Meyer goes to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: It's an NFL team, it's an NFL organization. One of
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: the greatest college coaches of all time does not work
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: in the NFL because they need to have that control.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: They need to have the ability to make those calls.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: You don't want somebody telling you, hey, guess what, I
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: know that you like this wide receiver. I know that
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: he's really impressed you over the past couple weeks of practice.
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: But we have nil money connected to this other guy.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: We have this other guy who've recruited higher. You have
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: to play him over this No. Coach Stark, as well
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: as a lot of other college coaches, want to have
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: control over their roster, want to have control over the
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: playing time in the playbook. They want to have control
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: over their program. Now, finally he got asked an interesting question,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: and it gives us a little bit of light. For years,
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: for multiple years, we were very interested in the growth
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: and development of Queen years and then Arch Manning comes
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: and it's almost like that, Okay, in the new Shiny Toy.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: What can we hear about him? We want to know
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: more and more and more about the quarterback for the
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns. Sark has spoke at length. Spring is not
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: a finished product, obviously, but we want to see improvement.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: He got asked, what does Arch Manning QB one at
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: the University of Texas need to improve on going forward?
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: Well, I think one is you know, and this is
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: going to sound crazy because I think he's a great leader,
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: but we're we continue to push him from a leadership standpoint.
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: This has been a great Spring for Arch.
- 1:32:47Speaker 4: Because he didn't get put out there on the field
- 1:32:49Speaker 4: the first you know, his first spring is a starting
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: quarterback with three vets that know the offense inside out
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: and are fixing things on the move.
- 1:32:57Speaker 5: He's having to.
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: Really lead and manage and coach in between plays. And
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: we keep trying to push him at that level because
- 1:33:05Speaker 4: he is a fantastic leader and he doesn't need to wait.
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: And that's probably the first thing that we're pushing upon
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: him is what is his leadership skills and getting all
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: of that out of him. The second thing is within
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: the confines of the offense, utilizing his athleticism. You know,
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: it's last year, especially in the second half of the season,
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: his athleticism was called upon because we called for those
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: things in specific moments. Now he's the starter and now
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: he's operating an offense. We don't want him to leave
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: his athleticism to the side. We want him to use
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: that athleticism in critical moments, third downs, red area things
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: of that nature. So it's finding that right balance to
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: do that. I thought he did a great job of
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: that this morning. On a couple of critical third downs.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: He used his legs to extend a couple drives, which
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: is going to be a key component to his game.
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: But really it's going to be a key component to
- 1:33:57Speaker 4: our game that people now have to defend us a
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: little bit differently.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Hearing from head
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: coach the Texas Longhorns, Steve Sarkesh All right, when we
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: come back, we will put a bow on it. We'll
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: wrap up The Craigway Show on a Tuesday edition. Send
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: you get you ready for Texas Baseball tonight. All coming
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: up next on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrews and We'll
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: hang out with you is we Wrap a bow on
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: The Craigway Show, a Tuesday edition before we send you
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: over to Crevino and Rich And then Tonight five forty
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: five airtime six pm, First Pitch, Craig Way and Keith
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Moreland on the call as the Texas Longhorns travel to
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: sunny San marvelous San Marcus, Texas take on the Texas
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: State Bobcats at bobcat Ballpark. And Bobcats a below five
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: hundred team, but they seem to find ways to win
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: on the road, especially when it comes to UCFU dish
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: fawk Field, where they've won four in a row. The Longhorns,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: on the other hand, one of the best teams in
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: baseball right now, rolling, rolling, rolling the long, dealing with injuries,
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: dealing with everything else and still finding ways to win.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: And they play have they won the last five games
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: at bobcat Ballpark. So it's one of those feelings I
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: have call it a hunch that this game tonight is
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: going to go the Long Horns way. The only X
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: factor I can tell you A well, I should say
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: there's two A The fact that the Longhorns have been
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: dealing with injuries when it comes to the pitching rotation.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: If Kate Bing is not pitching tonight, well you think
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: that they'd have enough arms to beat the Bobcats, but
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: you can't guarantee that right. And then two, the fact
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: that the long or the fact that Texas State has
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: consistently played teams that are not in their conference, that
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: they have no real reason to think that they would
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: have a chance to win. I think opposing fan bases
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: yanked their hair out. The Texas A and M, number
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: one team in the country, lose at home to Texas
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: State earlier this season. Baylor loses to Texas State earlier
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: this season. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: then again, sometimes sports don't make a lot of sense.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: Steve or Jim Sashtangle, Well, he made some sense of
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: why his team is so good. He got asked about
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: how loose this team is. And for a guy who
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: when I see him, he doesn't seem like the type
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: of guy that's drinking Pete Kolatas by the pool at
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: any point. He doesn't seem like a guy who's super
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: loosey goosey. He spoke about the loosest of his team.
- 1:36:28Speaker 11: Yeah, they're loose, this is for sure.
- 1:36:30Speaker 10: You know.
- 1:36:30Speaker 12: They they it's a slow burn for them to get
- 1:36:33Speaker 12: ready for a game, but once once it comes on
- 1:36:35Speaker 12: and they show up. So that's a tribute to the
- 1:36:38Speaker 12: leadership and a tribute to the not just the guys
- 1:36:41Speaker 12: that play, but the character the kids on the bench,
- 1:36:43Speaker 12: you know Service and you know Jonan when he wasn't playing,
- 1:36:47Speaker 12: and all the other guys, the pitchers aren't pitching, you know.
- 1:36:49Speaker 12: There it's a fun dugout to be in and they're confident.
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: You want a team that's loose. You want a team
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: that's relaxed. You want a team that's able to go
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: out and play their best baseball. It doesn't matter the
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: day as amount of the time that they feel comfortable
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: going out there and doing what they need to do. Now,
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: injuries have kind of hurt this team. Spencer potentially on
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: the DL or the IR for a little bit, Max
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Blue on the IR for a little bit. So you'd
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: be worried about those type of guys and what does
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: that do to your lineup? And if you lose guys
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: as the season continues to roll on, when do you
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: lose them that type of thing. But the importance is
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: is that they feel confident going in to any game
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: that they play. The other thing is peaking too early.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: A team that has won sixteen conference games to this point,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: that has rolled through opponents, that hasn't lost a weekend
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: series yet, how do you deal with peaking too early? No?
- 1:37:41Speaker 11: I don't know.
- 1:37:41Speaker 12: I mean, I don't you know you want to? I mean,
- 1:37:43Speaker 12: we're certainly playing without Balu and got guys playing out
- 1:37:46Speaker 12: of position. But no, there's I mean, Tennessee won the
- 1:37:52Speaker 12: national championship last year and they peaked pretty much through
- 1:37:54Speaker 12: all sixty games or however many it was.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: The long wars. Feel like they aren't peaking. It's the
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: standard being the standard being the standard that they just
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: continue to win the games that they have to win.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: Is again very ironic that when the schedule was put
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: together that the Longhorns would played Texas State on a
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Tuesday night before a series against the top five team
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: in the Georgia Bulldogs at home, And now they play
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: the Texas Bobcats TEXAA Bobcats before they play host to
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: Texas A and M this weekend, which would be all
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: things being equal, maybe one of the biggest series of
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: the weekend across college athletics, this weekend series against Texas
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: A and M. With the amount of vitriol that has
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: gone on online towards head coach team Slastnagle after leaving
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: Texas A and M after a national championship running up
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: campaign last year for the Aggies, the fact that of
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: course it is Texas versus Texas A and M. And
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: of course it is two of the best teams in
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: the SEC, the hottest team maybe in the SEC, and
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: the Texas A and M fight Naggies. There's a lot
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: that goes into this weekend's matchup. But you got to
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: get done tonight. You got to get the job done
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: at hand. That to me has to be the most
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: important thing is how do you find a way to
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: beat Texas State on their home turf at their ball club.
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: You've done it four times in a row. You've died
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: correction five times in a row. You haven't lost to
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: this team at their place since pre pandemic. There's a
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: lot that goes into this, something to keep an eye
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: on and an earon tonight as you listen on one
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: h three to one Austin's eighty station, Craig Way on
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: the call along with Keith Morland. Now, finally, I want
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: to play one last thing. As we've heard from Steve
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: Starkesian all afternoon from his media availability, he talked about
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: how gratifying it is the equin viewers into the NFL Draft.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: As the NFL Draft begins this Thursday in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 1:39:51Speaker 4: It's exciting, you know, the quarterback thing. Obviously, just because
- 1:39:56Speaker 4: of my history, it kind of hits home a little
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: bit differently. But but I surely want every position group
- 1:40:05Speaker 4: group to have guys getting drafted, right. I mean, the
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: fact that we've got more d lineman going in the
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: draft again this year. We've got another running back in
- 1:40:13Speaker 4: the draft this year, we've got more receivers, we've we've
- 1:40:15Speaker 4: got dbs, and so the fact that we're we're putting
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: players in the NFL at multiple positions and now here's
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: our first, excuse me, our first quarterback, I think is
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: a good sign for us that we're developing players at
- 1:40:27Speaker 4: multiple positions, especially at that one, because it is so
- 1:40:30Speaker 4: critical to the success of any football team. If you
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: don't have a quarterback, it's really hard, and we've been
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: fortunate to have a good one for the last three
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: years and Quinn it's going to make a great pro
- 1:40:42Speaker 4: and now we've got to recreate it here with Arch
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: and then Trey and and kJ So it's all part
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: of the process. But I'm proud of Quinn. He's worked
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: really hard. Somebody's going to get a very good player.
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Ager Zimbo happening
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: it up on the Craig Ways Show this afternoon, and
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: it's been very cool to see the growth and development
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: of Quinn viewers with Steve Sarkisian this season. It has
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: been or las actually the last two seasons with sarkas
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: the starting quarterback and getting him to this point. You
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: can tell it's a load off of Steve Sarkisian's line.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: All right, tonight five forty five hour time, six pm,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: first pitch one oh three one. Your home for Austin's

- 1:41:41Speaker 1: Talking this weekend, and of course talking arch manning and
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: all things Texas that is happening tomorrow two pm until
