- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. It
- 0:05Speaker 1: is January twelfth, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Do you know where your free agent bat is? We
- 0:13Speaker 1: will get to that later in the show, but first,
- 0:16Speaker 1: let's talk about the team that actually did sign a
- 0:20Speaker 1: big free agent bat over the weekend, The team that
- 0:22Speaker 1: I wrote about last week and said they needed to
- 0:25Speaker 1: make a move precisely like this. Generally speaking, teams don't
- 0:29Speaker 1: listen to me, don't care what I write. But in
- 0:31Speaker 1: this case, I think I had the right idea and
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Cubs did the right thing. Alex Gregman five years,
- 0:37Speaker 1: one hundred and seventy five million. With deferrals, it's more
- 0:40Speaker 1: like five to one fifty or five to one fifty five,
- 0:43Speaker 1: but either way, he will be their third baseman next season.
- 0:47Speaker 1: And with the Cubs doing this, they've really completed an
- 0:51Speaker 1: offseason it would seem to me that has been very
- 0:54Speaker 1: good in almost every way. They got a starting pitcher
- 0:58Speaker 1: Edward Cabrera that they needed, rebuilt their bullpen with five
- 1:02Speaker 1: free agent signings, even brought in Tyler Austin bringing him
- 1:05Speaker 1: back from Japan. They've just had a really sound off
- 1:09Speaker 1: season for a team that, in my opinion and in
- 1:12Speaker 1: the opinion of a lot of people who follow them,
- 1:14Speaker 1: need to take a step forward. The question now is
- 1:18Speaker 1: what is next for the Cubs, And you see their
- 1:20Speaker 1: off season editions right there, and let's not forget showda
- 1:23Speaker 1: Imanaga also accepted a qualifying offer, so he's back. The
- 1:27Speaker 1: question with the Cubs now is would they trade Nico
- 1:30Speaker 1: Horner or Matt Shaw now that they have Bregmann in
- 1:34Speaker 1: the fold. In my opinion, I've written this, and Sahada
- 1:37Speaker 1: Sharma of The Athletic wrote it more eloquently than I've
- 1:40Speaker 1: said it today. The Cubs can't trade Horner. They shouldn't
- 1:45Speaker 1: trade Horner. They can entertain the thought if they'd like,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and if someone wants to offer them something ridiculous for
- 1:52Speaker 1: one year of Nico Horner, be my guest. But the
- 1:56Speaker 1: whole idea here is to build the best team possible,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and it's difficult to imagine the best Cubs team possible
- 2:04Speaker 1: not including Nico Horner. Nico Horner, yes, under club control
- 2:08Speaker 1: for only one more season. Well, guess what you know
- 2:10Speaker 1: what that means. It means the Cubs should sign him
- 2:13Speaker 1: to an extension, and that way they would have locked
- 2:15Speaker 1: up Horner at second, Swanson and short Bregman at third.
- 2:19Speaker 1: This is a team, as I've written, has very little
- 2:22Speaker 1: on their books beyond this season, so they're in perfect position,
- 2:28Speaker 1: as they were, for Gregman to do something along those
- 2:31Speaker 1: lines with Nico Horner. I know Yankee fans are lusting
- 2:34Speaker 1: after him, other teams probably two or other.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Fan bases at least, but I.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Just don't see this happening. I don't see it as
- 2:41Speaker 1: particularly logical.
- 2:43Speaker 2: So good for the.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Cubs in getting the guy that they frankly should have
- 2:47Speaker 1: had last offseason. If you remember, they signed or attempted
- 2:51Speaker 1: to sign Alex Bregman for four years, one hundred and
- 2:54Speaker 1: fifteen million. They finished fourth in those sweepstakes. The Tigers
- 2:58Speaker 1: were ahead of them, other teams were ahead of them,
- 3:00Speaker 1: of course, the Red Sox were ahead of them, and
- 3:03Speaker 1: ultimately he gets much more than four to one point
- 3:06Speaker 1: fifteen from that team. He gets sixty million more and
- 3:09Speaker 1: an extra year. Good for Alex Bregman. He comes out
- 3:13Speaker 1: way ahead here. Even with the deferrals. He gets six years,
- 3:17Speaker 1: two hundred and fifteen million. It's not worth that in
- 3:19Speaker 1: present day, but that is ultimately around what he wanted
- 3:23Speaker 1: so Alex Gregman, he'll be at Wrigglely. Next year, he'll
- 3:27Speaker 1: be at Wriggily with Edward Cabrera. And the Cubs are
- 3:29Speaker 1: a team that, depending upon what the Brewers do, are
- 3:33Speaker 1: going to be one of the favorites in the NL Central,
- 3:35Speaker 1: which is what they should be every single year since
- 3:38Speaker 1: they are the biggest spender, or should be the biggest
- 3:40Speaker 1: spender in that particular division. Now moving on, this is
- 3:45Speaker 1: where it gets really interesting, and I touched on this
- 3:48Speaker 1: in my four takeaways on the Bregman contract Saturday night.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Three big bats remain Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, Boba Schet.
- 3:59Speaker 2: More than three.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Three teams are in the hunt for those big bats.
- 4:03Speaker 1: More than three big market teams are in the hunt.
- 4:06Speaker 2: In fact, I've listed five.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I've got five in my head. It's the Mets, it's
- 4:10Speaker 1: the Yankees, it's the Phillies, it's the Dodgers, and yes,
- 4:14Speaker 1: it's the Red Sox. So if you've got five teams
- 4:17Speaker 1: and the hunt for three bats, two are going to
- 4:20Speaker 1: go get left out. One of them you would think
- 4:23Speaker 1: might be the Red Sox since they don't want to
- 4:25Speaker 1: spend big on guys like this, and the other one, well,
- 4:28Speaker 1: who knows. And it's interesting because in speaking last week
- 4:32Speaker 1: with the Diamondbacks official, this is when they were still
- 4:34Speaker 1: mulling the possible trade of Katel Marte, that official said,
- 4:39Speaker 1: you know what, I don't know why these teams in
- 4:42Speaker 1: the mix for Marte are not being more aggressive with us,
- 4:46Speaker 1: because he foresaw this situation. There are not enough big
- 4:50Speaker 1: bats to go around. So who is going to get
- 4:53Speaker 1: left out? That's a question we're going to see answered.
- 4:56Speaker 1: The Yankees with Bellinger, buster only reported just a couple
- 4:59Speaker 1: of days that they are operating as if he is
- 5:02Speaker 1: signing somewhere else. That doesn't mean they won't sign him.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But obviously those negotiations have not gone well. The Athletics
- 5:09Speaker 1: Brendan Cutty has detailed that from the very beginning. So
- 5:13Speaker 1: if the Yankees get Bellinger, okay, that's the guy that
- 5:16Speaker 1: they've targeted, the guy they want. They're in a similar
- 5:18Speaker 1: physition with him that the Red Sox were in with Bregman.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Number one priority. That's Cody Bellinger for the New York Yankees.
- 5:26Speaker 1: The Tucker sweepstakes getting quite interesting. Jim Duquette reporting this
- 5:31Speaker 1: morning again that the three teams in the mix for Tucker.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Are the Mets, the Blue Jays, and the Dodgers. How
- 5:39Speaker 1: this is going to play out? I'm not exactly sure.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Will any of those teams go long with Tucker? That
- 5:45Speaker 1: probably is the biggest question right now. Because the Dodgers
- 5:49Speaker 1: we know they want to go short. The Mets, we
- 5:52Speaker 1: know they want to go short. The Blue Jays, It's
- 5:54Speaker 1: unclear exactly where they are. And here's Jim's tweet from
- 5:57Speaker 1: this morning. The league source confirmed to me that the
- 6:00Speaker 1: three main teams involved in the Tucker negotiations, Toronto, the Dodgers,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and the Mets, have all met with the player, either
- 6:06Speaker 1: in person or over zoom as part of the recruiting process.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Will be interesting to see if any of the three
- 6:13Speaker 1: teams increase their offers soon to separate themselves from the other. Now,
- 6:18Speaker 1: the real question here, perhaps is what does Tucker want.
- 6:23Speaker 1: He's a low key guy.
- 6:24Speaker 2: It's hard for people who.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Know him, many people who know him to envision him
- 6:29Speaker 1: wanting the Mets. Obviously, if they make the high offer,
- 6:32Speaker 1: he's going to want the Mets a little bit more
- 6:35Speaker 1: the Blue Jays. Does he want to go to Toronto? It's
- 6:37Speaker 1: still a question that some free agents have and then
- 6:40Speaker 1: there are the Dodgers. And with the Dodgers, the reason
- 6:43Speaker 1: I kind of like them in these sweepstakes is because
- 6:47Speaker 1: with them he would be their fifth, sixth biggest star.
- 6:51Speaker 1: He could kind of mix in and not attract the
- 6:55Speaker 1: notice he would in those other cities. But the Mets,
- 6:57Speaker 1: obviously he wouldn't be the biggest star, and with the
- 6:59Speaker 1: Blue Jays he wouldn't be the biggest. But the Dodgers
- 7:01Speaker 1: have arguably the most star power of any team. So Tucker,
- 7:06Speaker 1: it's going to be a really interesting decision, really interesting
- 7:09Speaker 1: to see.
- 7:10Speaker 2: What he does. Now.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Then there are the Boston Red Sox, and I've saved
- 7:15Speaker 1: I wouldn't call them the best, but I've saved them
- 7:17Speaker 1: for last. This is not a question of saving the
- 7:20Speaker 1: best for last. No, the question with the Red Sox
- 7:23Speaker 1: is what the heck are they going to do? As
- 7:25Speaker 1: I mentioned, they're not a team that looks like they're
- 7:28Speaker 1: going to be giving Boba shed eight years two hundred
- 7:31Speaker 1: million anytime soon, or something to that effect. They're a
- 7:35Speaker 1: team that has, from the days when they failed to
- 7:39Speaker 1: sign Mookie Betts, kind of had missteps at every turn.
- 7:44Speaker 1: The failure to sign Mookie, the trade of MOOKI that
- 7:46Speaker 1: was the original sin. After that, what happened. They overcompensated
- 7:52Speaker 1: by giving Devers Raphael Devers, a ten year, three hundred
- 7:55Speaker 1: and thirteen point five million dollar deal. I don't know
- 7:59Speaker 1: that anyone when that deal with signed thought it was
- 8:01Speaker 1: a great idea, thought that Devers was a guy that,
- 8:04Speaker 1: I don't know, three four or five years from the
- 8:06Speaker 1: date of signing would still be playing third base. He
- 8:09Speaker 1: looked like a first baseman DH. Even then, what did
- 8:12Speaker 1: the Red Sox see in him in year two of
- 8:15Speaker 1: that contract?
- 8:16Speaker 2: A first baseman DH.
- 8:18Speaker 1: It's when they signed Bregman and they moved Devers over
- 8:21Speaker 1: or tried to move him over to first, wanted to
- 8:23Speaker 1: move him over to first, and we all know.
- 8:25Speaker 2: How that turned out.
- 8:27Speaker 1: So then you have Bregman, but you don't sign Bregman back,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and now you're left with a whole at third base.
- 8:35Speaker 1: You're left with no Devors, no Bregman. What do you
- 8:37Speaker 1: do you see there? Jen McCaffrey wrote in letting Alex
- 8:41Speaker 1: Bregman walk the Red Sox, aversion to long term deals
- 8:44Speaker 1: rears its head. Now the Red Sox can still put
- 8:47Speaker 1: together a very representative team and other executives around the
- 8:51Speaker 1: league still think they're pretty good. They're going to do
- 8:53Speaker 1: some more perhaps, and maybe it won't be a big bat.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Maybe they'll go as Rob Bradford suggested this morning, maybe
- 9:00Speaker 1: they go for a high end pitcher and then supplement
- 9:04Speaker 1: themselves with lower kinds of bats, maybe an Aoheno Suarez,
- 9:09Speaker 1: maybe a jt Rio Munto, who they have had interest
- 9:12Speaker 1: in the past, or at least earlier this offseason.
- 9:15Speaker 2: But we'll see what happens with.
- 9:16Speaker 1: The Red Sox, because right now they're in a bit
- 9:19Speaker 1: of disarray. Tom Karen, one of their team broadcasters, was
- 9:23Speaker 1: critical of them on X yesterday.
- 9:25Speaker 2: A whole bunch of people were critical of them on X.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Fans, media members, you name it, and the Red Sox,
- 9:33Speaker 1: when in a siege moment like this, often overreact and
- 9:37Speaker 1: often overcompensate. That was what the Devors signing was after
- 9:42Speaker 1: they failed to get Mookie done. And let's remember Mooki
- 9:46Speaker 1: said later after he was traded that he would have
- 9:49Speaker 1: signed with the Red Sox signed back with them if
- 9:51Speaker 1: they had offered him the same deal that the Dodgers
- 9:54Speaker 1: did twelve years, three hundred and sixty five million.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Heavily deferred.
- 9:58Speaker 1: We don't know if that's true or not. It's a hypothetical,
- 10:01Speaker 1: But the Red Sox should have signed Mooky.
- 10:04Speaker 2: That again was the original sin.
- 10:06Speaker 1: So where are we now? What I wrote about the
- 10:09Speaker 1: Cubs last week is just as applicable for the Red
- 10:12Speaker 1: Sox at this moment. You're a big market team. Act
- 10:17Speaker 1: like it back in a moment with the Inside Dish.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Oh and one other thing, The Foul Territory Network has
- 10:23Speaker 1: Redman's deal covered from every angle. Patrick Mooney and Sahadev
- 10:26Speaker 1: Sharma's latest North Side Territory episode uncovers how the Cubs
- 10:31Speaker 1: got the deal across the finish line. Meanwhile, Robbie Hyde's
- 10:35Speaker 1: Monster Territory is left to lament what the Red Sox
- 10:39Speaker 1: should have done differently, Subscribe on YouTube and wherever you
- 10:42Speaker 1: get your podcast to the entire Foul Territory Network.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Well, well, all.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Right, time now for the Inside Dish, the part of
- 10:55Speaker 1: the show where I go inside a story. I've written
- 10:58Speaker 1: something happening in the game, something else entirely. And today
- 11:02Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about my column that appeared this
- 11:04Speaker 1: morning in The Athletic, the one on Trek Schooble's arbitration
- 11:09Speaker 1: case with the Detroit Tigers. This case is getting a
- 11:13Speaker 1: lot of attention. It should get a lot of attention
- 11:16Speaker 1: because Schooble has asked for a record amount in arbitration,
- 11:19Speaker 1: thirty two million, the Tigers have offered nineteen million. It
- 11:23Speaker 1: is the biggest spread in the history of arbitration going
- 11:26Speaker 1: back to nineteen seventy four or so. And it is
- 11:30Speaker 1: a complex nuance case that requires a good amount of
- 11:34Speaker 1: thought and a good amount of explanation. I won't go
- 11:37Speaker 1: into as much detail here as I did in the column.
- 11:39Speaker 1: The column is sort of lengthy by my standards, I guess.
- 11:43Speaker 1: But first off, let's talk about how arbitration hearings work.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I know most fans understand this, but let's just get
- 11:50Speaker 1: through it so the people who maybe aren't familiar can
- 11:53Speaker 1: get some insight into how this works.
- 11:56Speaker 2: So in a hearing, one side.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Has submitted one number, in this case, Schooble side, thirty
- 12:02Speaker 1: two million. The other side submits another number, nineteen million
- 12:05Speaker 1: in the Tiger's case, and the arbitrator, the three person
- 12:09Speaker 1: panel independent arbitrators jointly accreed upon by the Union and
- 12:14Speaker 1: Major League Baseball, they pick.
- 12:16Speaker 2: One number or the other. They don't go in between.
- 12:19Speaker 1: It's thirty two or nineteen in this case. Now there
- 12:23Speaker 1: is the possibility that the Tigers and school bol could
- 12:27Speaker 1: settle before the hearing takes place in February, but in
- 12:31Speaker 1: talking to people on both sides, no one anticipates that happening.
- 12:35Speaker 1: They are both entrenched in their positions and they both
- 12:39Speaker 1: have in their minds valid points. What they're saying here is,
- 12:44Speaker 1: in each case, each side is saying the other side
- 12:48Speaker 1: is trying to break from established norms. And I'll explain
- 12:51Speaker 1: that as we get into it. Schooble made ten point
- 12:54Speaker 1: one point five million last year off his first sy Young.
- 12:57Speaker 1: He then won his second sig Young. And here we
- 13:01Speaker 1: are where these two sides are diametrically opposed in how
- 13:06Speaker 1: they see what this case should mean for Trek Scuble.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Scooble and Boris believe that his number the Tiger's number.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I should say, I'm sorry ignores the CBA. The CBA,
- 13:18Speaker 1: which lists special accomplishments and lists five plus players as
- 13:22Speaker 1: players who can go outside the normal arbitration comparisons. Usually,
- 13:27Speaker 1: players are compared only to players in their own class.
- 13:31Speaker 1: That's how this works, That's how the numbers are determined. Ultimately,
- 13:35Speaker 1: when teams are negotiating with players when the arbitrators decide
- 13:39Speaker 1: on cases that are not settled. But Scooble can compare
- 13:43Speaker 1: himself because of those two things, special accomplishments and his
- 13:47Speaker 1: status as a player with five or more year service.
- 13:50Speaker 2: He can compare.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Himself to all players, and that includes free agents who
- 13:55Speaker 1: have signed lucrative contracts. The Tigers see this as much
- 14:00Speaker 1: different scenario. They see Schoobl's request at far beyond what
- 14:05Speaker 1: the system has historically dictated, the system of comparables. They
- 14:10Speaker 1: see him as more comparable to the David Prices and
- 14:13Speaker 1: the Jacob de Crams of the past than anyone currently
- 14:18Speaker 1: in the mix. You might talk about Zach Wheeler at
- 14:20Speaker 1: forty two million, They're like, no, no, no, in arbitration,
- 14:23Speaker 1: no one has ever gotten that much as a pitcher,
- 14:26Speaker 1: and that way, Derek Scrubles should not get that much either.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Now there is a backdrop to this as well, Actually
- 14:33Speaker 1: two backdrops to all this. One is that Major League
- 14:37Speaker 1: Baseball and the Union both have stakes in this. Major
- 14:40Speaker 1: League Baseball's labor relations department is one that recommends filing
- 14:47Speaker 1: numbers four teams. They are involved in the process of
- 14:50Speaker 1: arbitration as is the Union on the other side, involved
- 14:53Speaker 1: in making recommendations to players and their agents about what
- 14:57Speaker 1: they should seek. Now, the other backdrop, and perhaps the
- 15:01Speaker 1: more interesting one the fans, is what does this mean
- 15:04Speaker 1: for Terrek Schouble as a potential trade candidate?
- 15:07Speaker 2: Now all off season, the.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Tigers have sought to improve their roster and have Kyle Finnegan, Kennedy, Jansen,
- 15:15Speaker 1: Labor Torres returned on a qualifying offer. They've done some things,
- 15:19Speaker 1: and they have signaled that they are trying to win
- 15:22Speaker 1: in Schooble's last year of club control. But they also
- 15:27Speaker 1: have left the door open for a potential Schooble trade. Now,
- 15:31Speaker 1: I don't expect that trade necessarily to happen, and teams
- 15:35Speaker 1: always leave the door open on every possibility. That's just
- 15:38Speaker 1: how they roll. But this whole thing raises all entirely
- 15:43Speaker 1: different issue. If the Tigers are going to end up
- 15:46Speaker 1: paying thirty two million to Trek Scooble, are they more
- 15:48Speaker 1: inclined to trade him? And for all anyone knows, As
- 15:52Speaker 1: I wrote, Trek Scouoble might have asked for thirty two
- 15:55Speaker 1: million trying to force the issue with them, maybe trying
- 15:58Speaker 1: to force a trade to another team.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 16:00Speaker 1: We don't know the answers to that. Schooble has been
- 16:03Speaker 1: pretty adamant about wanting to stay in Detroit, But at
- 16:06Speaker 1: the same time, here he sent a serious message to
- 16:10Speaker 1: the Tigers about what he thinks he is worth, and
- 16:12Speaker 1: what a player is worth in arbitration is not necessarily
- 16:18Speaker 1: reflective of his value on the field. You'll see this
- 16:21Speaker 1: all the time, where a guy from zero to three
- 16:23Speaker 1: years service, an MVP type like Acunu was, for instance,
- 16:27Speaker 1: when he started, he's not getting paid a thirty million
- 16:30Speaker 1: dollar salary because he's in the zero to three class.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Arbitration players in the three to six year class, sometimes
- 16:37Speaker 1: the two to six year class, they don't get paid
- 16:39Speaker 1: what free agents get paid. That's the structure, and that's
- 16:42Speaker 1: the Tigers argument. So they have David Price's nineteen point
- 16:47Speaker 1: seven five million dollar record salary for an arbitration eligible
- 16:52Speaker 1: picture to point too, they have de Gram's record nine
- 16:56Speaker 1: point six million dollar raise for an arbitration eligible picture
- 16:59Speaker 1: to point two is well, and what they will say
- 17:01Speaker 1: is that, Hey, Scooble, as good as he is, is
- 17:05Speaker 1: not as good as de Gram was in twenty eighteen
- 17:08Speaker 1: when he had maybe the best year ever for an
- 17:11Speaker 1: arbitration eligible pitcher, and they could even argue that he
- 17:14Speaker 1: wasn't as good as Price, although Price's numbers were not
- 17:17Speaker 1: the same as Schooble's. Price had more innings at a
- 17:20Speaker 1: time when pitchers did pitch more innings. Again, fascinating question
- 17:25Speaker 1: and one we're going to see play out now.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Keep in mind also.
- 17:30Speaker 1: David Price his arbitration salary, that record nineteen point seven
- 17:34Speaker 1: to five million, that was eleven years ago. Jacob de
- 17:37Speaker 1: Gram his record raised from seven point seven million to
- 17:42Speaker 1: seventeen million. I'm sorry, seven point six to seventeen that
- 17:45Speaker 1: was six years ago. So we're talking about a long
- 17:50Speaker 1: time ago in both cases. And Scooble and Boris, his agent,
- 17:54Speaker 1: Scott Boris, would contend since then, They would argue since
- 17:58Speaker 1: then that Wan so Yoo, another Boris client, has set
- 18:02Speaker 1: the record for arbitration eligible players at thirty one million,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and they would ask the question, why are position players
- 18:09Speaker 1: in arbitration up here and pitchers down here?
- 18:14Speaker 2: Fair question.
- 18:15Speaker 1: So this again is going to go to a hearing.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I wish it was on television. I wish we could
- 18:21Speaker 1: see this play out. Arbitration hearings, unfortunately are not televised.
- 18:25Speaker 1: But the bottom line here is that Schooble is the
- 18:29Speaker 1: perfect guy to test this system. Scooble might be headed
- 18:33Speaker 1: for four hundred million next year in free agency next offseason.
- 18:38Speaker 1: So is he worried about getting nineteen million rather than
- 18:41Speaker 1: thirty two million, getting a big raise rather than a
- 18:44Speaker 1: massive raise? Well, I'm sure I'd rather have the thirty
- 18:47Speaker 1: two but if he has nineteen. If he gets nineteen,
- 18:49Speaker 1: it's still a big raise from ten point one five
- 18:52Speaker 1: and he's good now. Both sides, as I mentioned, they
- 18:55Speaker 1: believe their arguments are valid. It's impossible to know what
- 18:59Speaker 1: a panel of arbitrators might do. We routinely get surprised
- 19:03Speaker 1: by their decisions year after year.
- 19:05Speaker 2: But either way, and this.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Is the point here, this decision is likely to have
- 19:11Speaker 1: ramifications for baseball, for the Tigers, and for Schooble that
- 19:15Speaker 1: go well beyond what.
- 19:17Speaker 2: He's going to earn in twenty twenty six.
- 19:20Speaker 1: We'll be back with Grill and Ken after this.

- 19:58Speaker 3: own show. It's called may Day and it runs right

- 20:31Speaker 1: Time now for Grilling Ken, the part of the show
- 20:33Speaker 1: where I answer your questions. Let's get right to them.
- 20:38Speaker 1: First question comes from armand is amazing armand he asks
- 20:43Speaker 1: Grilling Ken, does Boba Chet sign a deal with the
- 20:45Speaker 1: Phillies today during the meeting. It's interesting you asked that
- 20:48Speaker 1: armand because I've actually had that thought. So they do
- 20:51Speaker 1: have a Zoom meeting scheduled for today, is first reported
- 20:54Speaker 1: by Matt gil And in this meeting, I'm sure the
- 20:59Speaker 1: Phillies are going to put for Burshette. And it's the
- 21:01Speaker 1: kind of thing while it's on Zoom, you sort of
- 21:04Speaker 1: don't want to let them get off the zoom without
- 21:06Speaker 1: getting a deal done, right.
- 21:08Speaker 2: It's that old theory, don't let.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Him walk out of the room until he signs a contract.
- 21:12Speaker 1: You can't really do that on Zoom, I guess, but
- 21:15Speaker 1: it's the same working idea. And I go back also
- 21:18Speaker 1: to what Pete Alonso said on Foul Territory about what
- 21:22Speaker 1: the Orioles did when they met with him that was
- 21:25Speaker 1: live in person in the winter meetings. Alonso said the
- 21:28Speaker 1: Orioles made an offer showing their intent before he even
- 21:32Speaker 1: was in the meeting with them. They made that offer
- 21:35Speaker 1: before the meeting, and I imagine if the Phillies want
- 21:38Speaker 1: to be aggressive with Burshette, they will do something along
- 21:40Speaker 1: those same lines. If I had to guess right now,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I would say the Phillies are the favorite.
- 21:45Speaker 2: We'll see what happens.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Next question from Tyler Macksmith, who asked, will the Braves
- 21:51Speaker 1: TV situation affect their pursuit of a starting pitcher? Interesting question. Now,
- 21:56Speaker 1: the Braves are one of the teams affected by this
- 21:59Speaker 1: main street thing that's going on, losing their TV deals,
- 22:02Speaker 1: losing their money that they previously had. They signed Tyler
- 22:06Speaker 1: Kinley a reliever, re signed them really to a three
- 22:09Speaker 1: million dollar contract over the weekend. I'm sorry, four point
- 22:12Speaker 1: twenty five for one year. Four point twenty five million
- 22:15Speaker 1: for one year.
- 22:16Speaker 2: For Tyler Kinley.
- 22:17Speaker 1: That would indicate to me that they can still do things.
- 22:19Speaker 1: But it is unclear for all the teams affected by
- 22:24Speaker 1: this TV situation how it is going to impact them financially.
- 22:30Speaker 2: So it's a fair question.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And I guess we'll see as this plays out how
- 22:36Speaker 1: much the Braves were affected, because here is a team
- 22:39Speaker 1: that has made no secret of its desire to add
- 22:42Speaker 1: another starting pitcher. All right, Next question, This one is
- 22:47Speaker 1: from Carter Hawkins one thirteen. Because Bob Netting isn't spending well,
- 22:52Speaker 1: he has spent more than he's spent in the past.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Ryan O'Hearn two years, twenty nine million, that was for
- 22:58Speaker 1: their pirates a major deal. Well, the question is how
- 23:01Speaker 1: much more can they do? And they do need to
- 23:03Speaker 1: do more, and I'm not exactly sure how this is
- 23:06Speaker 1: going to end up for them. Aohana Suarez is a
- 23:09Speaker 1: guy that they've been linked to. He's a guy who
- 23:10Speaker 1: could end up with the Red Sox.
- 23:12Speaker 2: He's gonna do fine somewhere. But if I'm the Pirates, I.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Want at least one more hitter and.
- 23:18Speaker 2: We'll see if they accomplish that.
- 23:20Speaker 1: They have been aggressive in free agency to an extent
- 23:24Speaker 1: that they have previously not been.
- 23:26Speaker 2: But of course.
- 23:27Speaker 1: O'Hearn is the only real free agent they've landed. They've
- 23:30Speaker 1: made some trades, and some good trades that have increased payroll,
- 23:33Speaker 1: but the big free agents they've basically gone to teams
- 23:37Speaker 1: that they perceive those players perceive as more competitive.
- 23:41Speaker 2: All right, let's take one more before we cut out here.
- 23:44Speaker 1: This one's from John Todd twenty two e five, d Ken,
- 23:48Speaker 1: do you have anything on the Angels? I mean, why
- 23:50Speaker 1: would they save the Rendome money if they don't plan
- 23:53Speaker 1: to spend it this year.
- 23:54Speaker 2: I'm so confused, and hopefully you can help with understanding
- 23:57Speaker 2: their plans.
- 23:58Speaker 1: The Angels are another team in this TV situation, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: I wrote about a week and a half ago that
- 24:05Speaker 1: they were kind of lurking in the market. They were
- 24:07Speaker 1: thinking about doing big things. That was before the TV
- 24:10Speaker 1: stuff came down. And even at that time, our Angels
- 24:13Speaker 1: beat writer Sam Blum said to me, are you sure
- 24:16Speaker 1: about this?
- 24:17Speaker 2: You think they're really going to spend?
- 24:18Speaker 1: Because Sam's experience told him they're not going to spend,
- 24:22Speaker 1: and right now it looks like that is more likely
- 24:25Speaker 1: than actually doing something big or even doing something meaningful
- 24:29Speaker 1: at all. And you're right, where is the rendo money?
- 24:32Speaker 1: What is the point if you're not going to reinvest it? Hey,
- 24:35Speaker 1: they did have to settle to Tyler skagg case, they've
- 24:38Speaker 1: had some things go against them financially. But could they
- 24:41Speaker 1: spend more? Yes, of course they could spend more. All Right,
- 24:44Speaker 1: with that, we close it out. I want to thank
- 24:47Speaker 1: everyone for watching and for listening. Foul Territory coming up
- 24:50Speaker 1: at one pm ET. Luke Weaver, Jonathan Papabon and Sean
- 24:54Speaker 1: Nukam joined AJ Presents, Eric Kratz and Scott Brown.
- 24:58Speaker 2: We will be back Thursday at our normal.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Twelve thirty Eastern flat with a lot of Rizzo returning,
- 25:03Speaker 1: I talk to you then have a great week. Everyone,
