2:10
Speaker 5: kind of becoming like the pickleball capital of West Virginia.
2:14
Speaker 5: Of course, Saul with Metro nine one while we'll talk
2:16
Speaker 5: to Johnny Rutherford and others about that coming up on
2:19
Speaker 5: the show a little bit later on. Lots of chatter
2:20
Speaker 5: still about the raisin parking for the town Center. We'll
2:25
Speaker 5: talk about that if I get time. And it was
2:28
Speaker 5: announced earlier this week that a new hotel is being
2:32
Speaker 5: build in Well, actually wasn't announced. It was announced a
2:33
Speaker 5: long time ago that hotel was being in Charleston, was
2:36
Speaker 5: being built in Charleston, and for some reason, everybody in
2:39
Speaker 5: social media losing their mind over it and not realizing
2:42
Speaker 5: why we need another hotel in Charleston. If I get time,
2:45
Speaker 5: I'm gonna explain to you why we do need another
2:48
Speaker 5: hotel in Charleston. That's coming up. Plus it is the
2:51

3:06
Speaker 5: Let's welcome in, Angie Gillenwater now from the Kennaal Charleston,
3:09
Speaker 5: UMaine Association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of
3:12
Speaker 5: the Week, Angie.
3:13
Speaker 6: Good morning, Good morning.
3:16
Speaker 5: And as always, our pet's picture posted on my social media.
3:20
Speaker 5: You can check out the picture of Barry that's our
3:23
Speaker 5: dog this week. Barry's photo posted Dave Allen Radio on
3:26
Speaker 5: Facebook and at Dave A seventy on X. The artist
3:29
Speaker 5: formerly known as Twitter tell us all about Barry.
3:33
Speaker 7: Well, I personally cannot say a good enough good things
3:36
Speaker 7: about Barry when I say he is a staff favorite
3:39
Speaker 7: and the perfect dog. He truly is. He's so easy
3:44
Speaker 7: to walk on the leash. I promise you if you
3:47
Speaker 7: go to the shelter, Barry will not be in his kennel.
3:49
Speaker 7: He's gonna be on a walk with either a staff
3:52
Speaker 7: member or a volunteer. Everybody just loves him. But he's
3:55
Speaker 7: about six years old, which puts him close to the
3:58
Speaker 7: senior age, and he would do best as the only
4:02
Speaker 7: pet in your home. He could probably coexist with like
4:07
Speaker 7: a goldfish or something that lives, you know, on a
4:09
Speaker 7: countertop and far away from him. But other furry friends
4:14
Speaker 7: like cats, dogs, ferrets will probably want to stay away
4:17
Speaker 7: from them.
4:19
Speaker 5: Not so much.
4:20
Speaker 7: No, No, he prefers to be the center of the
4:22
Speaker 7: tension and that's that's totally okay, we respect that for him.
4:26
Speaker 5: No, he's a beautiful dog. I mean he really is
4:28
Speaker 5: vaccinated and all that stuff fixed. Has he got all
4:31
Speaker 5: that taken care of?
4:32
Speaker 7: Oh yeah, he's ready to roll out of that building
4:35
Speaker 7: as soon as you pick him.
4:37
Speaker 5: Well, he's a beautiful dog. Any idea what kind? I know,
4:39
Speaker 5: we try to play this game every week and you're
4:41
Speaker 5: about as good as as the Zion. But do you
4:43
Speaker 5: have any any idea what kind of dog Barry might be?
4:46
Speaker 7: So he is more on the petite side, I would
4:50
Speaker 7: say he's probably like a forty to fifty pound dog,
4:53
Speaker 7: So I wouldn't He has the coloring and like definitely
4:55
Speaker 7: the face shape of maybe a mastive mix, but he's
4:58
Speaker 7: definitely not that size. Okay, So probably you're run of
5:02
Speaker 7: the mill West Virginia brown dog for Barry.
5:04
Speaker 5: Well, and he would make a I would think a
5:07
Speaker 5: great family pet. But as you said, just know, going
5:11
Speaker 5: in that he's not so much on other animals, and
5:13
Speaker 5: that's okay, you know, So just know that if you've
5:15
Speaker 5: got other animals right now, Barry may not be the
5:17
Speaker 5: dog for you. But if you are looking for a
5:20
Speaker 5: dog and you don't have any other animals, as you said,
5:22
Speaker 5: maybe other than the goldfish or something like that, Barry
5:25
Speaker 5: would be the ideal dog. I mean one hundred percent,
5:29
Speaker 5: as you said, Angie, based on his personality, that would
5:32
Speaker 5: make him a great family dog.
5:33
Speaker 7: I would think, oh yeah, he is absolutely one of
5:36
Speaker 7: the best dogs I've come across at the shelter. And
5:39
Speaker 7: I'm telling you, if you ask any of our staff
5:41
Speaker 7: or volunteers, they're gonna say Barry is one of their
5:44
Speaker 7: favorite shelter pets. He's just so great. What he doesn't
5:48
Speaker 7: have for, you know, other dogs or other critters, he
5:50
Speaker 7: makes up four tenfold in loving people. So he is
5:54
Speaker 7: a very social and friendly dog.
5:55
Speaker 5: And you said he walks great on a leash and
5:57
Speaker 5: he loves his toys, he does.
6:00
Speaker 7: Indeed.
6:01
Speaker 5: Talking to Angie Gillawater from the Canal to Charleston U

Speaker 5: brought to you in part by Bridge Valley offering custom

6:12
Speaker 5: Visit Bridge Valley dot eed U. Now I had a
6:15
Speaker 5: text of the show about that, but I was gonna
6:17
Speaker 5: that was me my next point anyway, on your social
6:19
Speaker 5: media yesterday, you took in nearly thirty nearly nearly thirty
6:24
Speaker 5: yesterday alone. That's that's a lot. That's a lot of
6:27
Speaker 5: pets there, Angie.
6:29
Speaker 7: Yeah, yesterday was a tough one to be at the
6:31
Speaker 7: shelter of everyone was very on edge, if you will.
6:35
Speaker 7: But we're we're very glad to be able to help.
6:38
Speaker 7: We are just struggling for space because not only do
6:41
Speaker 7: we take in the thirty yesterday, but we have about
6:44
Speaker 7: close to twenty more come in today and that you know,
6:48
Speaker 7: desperately need to come in that need our help now.
6:51
Speaker 7: So we if you have been thinking about adopting or
6:54
Speaker 7: even taking a dog for a sleepover, let us know
6:58
Speaker 7: we would be super happy to have you and you
7:00
Speaker 7: would be helping us out a ton in our current situation.
7:04
Speaker 5: Yeah, we had And as I said, I was gonna
7:06
Speaker 5: mention that anyway, and I appreciate the texture sending that in.
7:08
Speaker 5: They actually sent me a picture of your post that
7:11
Speaker 5: you did on the Facebook page where you had a
7:15
Speaker 5: mama dog that was brought in and she arrived I'm
7:18
Speaker 5: reading off your post right now, arrived just in the
7:20
Speaker 5: nick of time, not to have her puppies in the cold,
7:22
Speaker 5: rainy weather. So far, she'd had four, but is still
7:26
Speaker 5: an active labor And as you whoever does your you
7:30
Speaker 5: know social media, said, the shelter is not a great
7:32
Speaker 5: place to raise babies. It's noisy, there could be sick
7:35
Speaker 5: animals there, so on and so forth. So beautiful picture
7:37
Speaker 5: and I appreciate the texture for sending that in of
7:40
Speaker 5: that beautiful dog in and her puppies. So just again,
7:45
Speaker 5: it is a rough day, as you said at the
7:46
Speaker 5: shelter yesterday, and you guys desperately need help.
7:50
Speaker 7: That is true. Me and one other person share our
7:53
Speaker 7: social media responsibility. So thank you so much for coming.
7:59
Speaker 7: But yeah, we if you are looking for a small dog,
8:02
Speaker 7: a big dog, a certain color, a certain temperament, we
8:05
Speaker 7: have them and we would be one hundred percent willing
8:07
Speaker 7: to match make if it means a dog is going
8:09
Speaker 7: to get out of there for a little bit.
8:11
Speaker 5: And cats too, don't forget the cats.
8:13
Speaker 7: Cats too, cats. We are a little we have a
8:15
Speaker 7: little more wiggle room on space, but we one percent.
8:19
Speaker 7: Like I said before, I'm a cat lady. I won't
8:22
Speaker 7: help matchmake you do your cat, but yeah, we also
8:26
Speaker 7: need help with our cats.
8:27
Speaker 5: All right. I saw on your social media speaking of such,
8:30
Speaker 5: you folks took a trip down to Mercer County. Bit
8:33
Speaker 5: of a road trip. What was that all about?
8:35
Speaker 7: So our friends at Mercer County have been in the
8:38
Speaker 7: same boat we have as far as being very full
8:41
Speaker 7: and needing some help from the public. The issue with
8:45
Speaker 7: Mercer County is they didn't have as many programs set
8:49
Speaker 7: up as KHA does, like the fostering program or even
8:54
Speaker 7: really just a great social media presence. So they had
8:57
Speaker 7: asked us if we could come help them and train
8:59
Speaker 7: them on a couple things that we do at CASEYHA,
9:02
Speaker 7: And that's exactly what we did. We went to help
9:04
Speaker 7: them out, yeah, to hopefully get more of their pets
9:07
Speaker 7: out of the shelters.
9:08
Speaker 5: All right, good stuff that you're able to help out
9:11
Speaker 5: the other shelters in the area. Also, I do want
9:14
Speaker 5: to mention and we will continue to mention as we
9:16
Speaker 5: get closer. Today, tuxes and tails, it's your big events
9:19
Speaker 5: coming up.
9:20
Speaker 7: Yeah, it's getting closer. It is creeping up on me
9:22
Speaker 7: very quickly.
9:23
Speaker 5: And you got information available about that on your social
9:26
Speaker 5: media and also on your website as well. So let's
9:31
Speaker 5: try to get some dogs adopted again. You took in
9:33
Speaker 5: twenty nine yesterday, and I'm assuming this Mama dog. Technically,
9:38
Speaker 5: if that was let's say number twenty nine, we had
9:41
Speaker 5: at least four more added to that when you count
9:43
Speaker 5: the puppies, right, that is true.
9:45
Speaker 7: And she, like I said, she's still an active labor
9:48
Speaker 7: so probably adding more and more to that number as well.
9:51
Speaker 5: All right, and she will let you go. I'll let
9:53
Speaker 5: you get back to it. I do appreciate it. Thanks
9:54
Speaker 5: a lot. We'll talk to you next week.
9:56
Speaker 7: Thank you.
9:57
Speaker 5: You have a good one as well. Angie Gillenwater from
9:59
Speaker 5: the Canal Charleston New Association TEX says, I wish all
10:02
Speaker 5: our local businesses would consider adopting company mascots, dogs and cats.
10:07
Speaker 5: All business owners please consider this. I will say this.
10:10
Speaker 5: When I worked at another radio station group here in
10:15
Speaker 5: the Kanaw Valley at one point, Now this was not
10:17
Speaker 5: a station dog per se. It actually belonged to one
10:21
Speaker 5: of the workers there in the office but she brought
10:23
Speaker 5: the dog into work every day. I don't know what
10:26
Speaker 5: the I think we have a no I think we
10:29
Speaker 5: have a no animal policy in the building here because
10:33
Speaker 5: when we first started doing this segment, I could tell
10:35
Speaker 5: the story now, when we first started doing this adopt
10:38
Speaker 5: me Please Better the Week segment a few years ago
10:41
Speaker 5: on this show, one of the dogs took care of
10:47
Speaker 5: his or her business on the control room floor while
10:49
Speaker 5: we were on the air. So that pretty much did
10:52
Speaker 5: it for us having an animal in here. But again,
10:54
Speaker 5: you know, it was nervous. I mean we I mean,
10:56
Speaker 5: we've had announcers. It's probably done the same thing, you know.
10:59
Speaker 5: So I'm just saying, so, you know, good, good idea
11:03
Speaker 5: from the texture adopt get yourself a station or a business.
11:07
Speaker 5: Dog or cat. Barry is our pet of the Week.
11:11
Speaker 5: Picture posted Dave Alan Radio on Facebook and at Dave
11:13
Speaker 5: a seventy on Acts. Six years old. Came in as
11:16
Speaker 5: astray from the Cistonville area. Already vaccinated, already fixed, ready
11:20
Speaker 5: to go home, very social, very happy, dog loves his toys,
11:24
Speaker 5: walks great on a leash, does though, need to be
11:28
Speaker 5: the only pet in the house again, And she said
11:31
Speaker 5: maybe goldfish will be okay, but not so much another
11:34
Speaker 5: dogs and cats. But if you're looking for a perfect dog,
11:37
Speaker 5: he prefers humans over other pets. I'm the opposite. I
11:41
Speaker 5: prefer pets over humans. But that's just me. So go
11:44
Speaker 5: get Barry. And again, I've got his picture posted on
11:46
Speaker 5: my social media. So let's get Barry adopted. Would be
11:48
Speaker 5: a great, great pet for you and your family. Big

15:25
Speaker 5: Come there, all right. And and Johnny and I've been
15:27

15:29
Speaker 5: pickleball is. But you're you're on the ground there. I mean,
15:32
Speaker 5: you know how big pickleball is here in the Kenawah Valley.
15:35
Speaker 11: Yeah, And it's just growing and growing, I think. I mean,
15:39
Speaker 11: I encourage everyone to come out and play. It doesn't
15:41
Speaker 11: matter athletic or not, age doesn't matter. I think everyone

Speaker 5: I love it, pulling that microphone a little closer to you.
15:56
Speaker 4: I'm still involved with Metro. They've asked me to help
15:58
Speaker 4: them with their employees Association thun.
16:00
Speaker 5: Metro nine one one, nine one one.
16:02
Speaker 4: And this was about, uh, the great thing about pickleball.
16:05
Speaker 4: Just let me interject here for a second. I'm retired now,
16:08
Speaker 4: uh huh. Kyl's in his early thirties. And the great
16:10
Speaker 4: thing about pickleball it doesn't matter. We can play and
16:13
Speaker 4: be competitive against each other, just the nature of the game.
16:15
Speaker 5: Well, I noticed when Kyle said doesn't matter your age,
16:17
Speaker 5: he looked at you. I'm just I'm just saying, just
16:20
Speaker 5: saying insane. But now you're still I mean, I give it.
16:23
Speaker 5: I give you credit, man, because you're still out there,
16:25
Speaker 5: you know, being competitive. You're not that old, but you're
16:28
Speaker 5: out there being competitive and staying active and doing what
16:31
Speaker 5: you got to do to stay in shave.
16:32
Speaker 12: Man.
16:32
Speaker 5: That's good stuff.
16:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a great game. It's enjoyable, It keeps you,
16:35
Speaker 4: It keeps your cardio up and your coordination, you know,
16:40
Speaker 4: the way you play. It's really a great game to
16:42
Speaker 4: keep you in shape.
16:42
Speaker 5: And this thing has become so big since the first
16:45
Speaker 5: time you were how many years have you been We'll say,
16:48
Speaker 5: because we've been talking pickleball for the last couple of years.
16:50
Speaker 5: I thought, but uh, this event, I mean it it
16:54
Speaker 5: brings in the top the cream. I mean, I know
16:56
Speaker 5: we got the Masters going on right now. Uh, but
16:59
Speaker 5: this is I mean becoming on this in this part
17:01
Speaker 5: of the country, like the Masters of pickleball pretty much right.
17:05
Speaker 11: That's correct. Like last year we had Susannah Barr, top
17:09
Speaker 11: app pro. She came in. If you guys can remember,
17:12
Speaker 11: we call her the mj of pickleball.
17:13
Speaker 5: She's the Michael Jordan of pickleball.
17:16
Speaker 11: Yeah, So she came into town, and then there were
17:18
Speaker 11: a bunch of other up and coming players. We actually
17:20
Speaker 11: had two guys that were in our tournament last year
17:24
Speaker 11: that just signed PPA contracts, which is one of like
17:27
Speaker 11: the highest level of pickleball. So they've progressed from success
17:30
Speaker 11: at Nighter last year all the way to the top.
17:33
Speaker 5: They've gone to the NFL of pickleball pretty much pretty
17:35
Speaker 5: much exactly. And this and John and I've talked about
17:38
Speaker 5: this for the last couple of years. Thinks this this
17:42
Speaker 5: event has become so huge. But pickleball itself has become
17:45
Speaker 5: so I mean, most people ten years ago never even
17:47
Speaker 5: heard of pickleball, maybe five years ago never heard of pickleball,
17:51
Speaker 5: and it's the hottest thing. It's not a sting in
17:52
Speaker 5: America as far as sports go right now exactly. And
17:55
Speaker 5: uh and talk about what goes on with this tournament.
17:59
Speaker 5: I mean, it's as far as all these people coming
18:01
Speaker 5: in and you know what I like, Captain capitalist here,
18:04
Speaker 5: what I like is when they come in, they're spending
18:06
Speaker 5: money and they're putting heads in beds, is Tim Brady
18:10
Speaker 5: over the CVB would say, And they're eating at the
18:12
Speaker 5: restaurants and they're doing all the things like that.
18:14
Speaker 7: Joe.
18:15
Speaker 4: What was amazing the first the second year, especially as
18:17
Speaker 4: when we went to a little bit of the pros
18:18
Speaker 4: coming in the city of Nitro, restaurants actually ran out
18:21
Speaker 4: of food. They weren't prepared for the amount of people
18:23
Speaker 4: that would come into the city of Nitro. And that's
18:25
Speaker 4: not only from out of state. We have people coming
18:27
Speaker 4: from Idaho, High Kentucky, North Carolina, and the restaurants actually
18:31
Speaker 4: ran out of food. But it's also people from Huntington, Canova.
18:35
Speaker 4: One of the things I want to make sure I
18:36
Speaker 4: say is this we're talking about the pros, but this
18:39
Speaker 4: tournament's for everybody. Indeed, this tournament goes even to the
18:41
Speaker 4: people the players that just started that are three o's,
18:44
Speaker 4: which are the beginners, all the way to the four
18:46
Speaker 4: point five to five o's, so it's for everybody. We
18:49
Speaker 4: invite everybody to come out. We keep the levels separate,
18:52
Speaker 4: so if you're a beginner, you're playing against beginners. If
18:54
Speaker 4: you're intermediate, you're playing against intermediate. So is this tournament's
18:56
Speaker 4: for everybody?
18:57
Speaker 5: And one of the dates again.
18:58
Speaker 4: It starts to thirtieth, Pay thirty first and June first
19:02
Speaker 4: at Nitro.
19:03
Speaker 5: And the reason we always have you on early is
19:05
Speaker 5: to kind some people can make plans for it, and
19:07
Speaker 5: there's people that come out just you know, just like
19:10
Speaker 5: any other event, you know, just watch.
19:12
Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean there's there's if you were to come
19:15
Speaker 11: to this term and you'll see people all along the
19:17
Speaker 11: court watching the play and not only watching like we
19:21
Speaker 11: were talking about, just the pros of watching the amateurs,
19:24
Speaker 11: watching your friends, things like that, and that's competitive on
19:27
Speaker 11: every court.
19:27
Speaker 4: It's quite the social event.
19:29
Speaker 5: Well that's that's big. But Dave Allen showing five any
19:31
Speaker 5: Live brought to you, in part by snap Fitsiness, offering
19:34
Speaker 5: a wide array of professional wellness services including customized personal training,
19:37
Speaker 5: license recovery experts, and a staff of dietitians. Five great
19:40
Speaker 5: locations Hurricane Charleston, Barbersville, Winfield and Milton Business Snapfitness dot
19:45
Speaker 5: comferen Detales talk about to Metro nine to one one's
19:48
Speaker 5: involvement in this job.
19:49
Speaker 4: Well, Metro nine one one, of course, that's where I
19:51
Speaker 4: got involved, being in the retired executive director of Metro
19:54
Speaker 4: nine on one. We have great employees that every day
19:57
Speaker 4: enter over fifteen hundred calls, five hundred thousand calls the year,
20:00
Speaker 4: everything from cardiac arrest to delivering babies, and the proceeds,
20:04
Speaker 4: the profit from this fundraiser basically for them goes to
20:07
Speaker 4: reward them when they do a good job. Sometimes they
20:10
Speaker 4: do CPR and they'll save a life. And what we
20:12
Speaker 4: do with that we use a gift card to twenty
20:15
Speaker 4: five door gift card to buy them lunch for doing
20:17
Speaker 4: a great job and save with somebody's life or delivered
20:19
Speaker 4: the baby.
20:19
Speaker 5: And so again this is a big event as far
20:21
Speaker 5: as tourism for the area goes. But there's something in
20:24
Speaker 5: it for nine to one one that you're trying to
20:26
Speaker 5: reward and you somebody that's done that your whole life.
20:29
Speaker 5: I mean, you're trying to reward these employees for going
20:32
Speaker 5: above and beyond. Yes, sir, what for people that may
20:35
Speaker 5: have gone to this in the past. You talked about
20:37
Speaker 5: the the Michael Jordan of pickleball coming back, talk about
20:40
Speaker 5: some of the other maybe things that are new this
20:42
Speaker 5: year that are you trying anything new this year?
20:44
Speaker 11: So, actually, the big new thing is with the complex.
20:48
Speaker 11: In the past that we've just had nine courts, nine
20:50
Speaker 11: courts and seven there on the side, but now we
20:53
Speaker 11: have a brand new covering over top of the courts
20:56
Speaker 11: which will allow us to play twenty four to seven
21:00
Speaker 11: all year long. The big problem here in Charleston is
21:03
Speaker 11: in the winter it's kind of hard to find play,
21:06
Speaker 11: which this facility will now allow us to do things
21:09
Speaker 11: like that. But this year we have we've we have
21:13
Speaker 11: a little bit more money on the line trying to
21:15
Speaker 11: incentivize more people to come as well as this year
21:19
Speaker 11: we're instead of giving amateurs medals for winning, they'll get
21:22
Speaker 11: a brand new backpack that says like number one one
21:25
Speaker 11: Metro Gold Medals and things like that.
21:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, and they can take that to their their whatever
21:31
Speaker 5: their pickleball court is, whether it's that one or another
21:33
Speaker 5: one to go in and it's got a intimidation.
21:35
Speaker 3: Uh huh.
21:35
Speaker 5: You see, you see this right here, champion, champion.
21:38
Speaker 4: You know, Dave. One thing that's great about our community,
21:40
Speaker 4: our pickleball community, is it's supported by the cities. Almost
21:43
Speaker 4: every city in the valley has put new pickleball courts
21:46
Speaker 4: in and so we thank the mayors for that. We
21:48
Speaker 4: especially think Mayor case Bolt, he has really invested. We
21:51
Speaker 4: have some of the best courts in our area, statewide,
21:56
Speaker 4: in the local states, in the valley, everywhere. We just
21:59
Speaker 4: have great courts in Nitro.
22:01
Speaker 5: And people come in just to say that they've played
22:03
Speaker 5: on those courts in Nitro. That's how good they are. Yes,
22:06
Speaker 5: I mean because maybe in their respective communities they don't
22:09
Speaker 5: have what Nitro has.
22:10
Speaker 4: That's true, they're excellent courts.
22:12
Speaker 5: Yeah. So again for people that are that are coming
22:16
Speaker 5: out just just to watch, talk about the hours, talk
22:20
Speaker 5: about the seating, talk about all this stuff that goes
22:22
Speaker 5: along with that.
22:23
Speaker 11: So, like we said, it'll be May thirtieth, May thirty first,
22:27
Speaker 11: and June first, So Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Friday, will be singles.
22:31
Speaker 11: It will be singles for everyone, whether you're an amateur pro.
22:35
Speaker 11: Saturday will be gender doubles, which is men's and women's doubles.
22:39
Speaker 11: Sunday we'll be mixed. I would encourage to come. You
22:42
Speaker 11: can obviously stand along the side, bring a chair or
22:45
Speaker 11: something like that. We should have bleachers on the side
22:47
Speaker 11: that you'll be able to see and watch. We'll also
22:51
Speaker 11: have food trucks and things like that for the visitors
22:53
Speaker 11: to come and enjoy as well.
22:54
Speaker 4: So, and we have Metro nine one employees given out
22:57
Speaker 4: free water, taking care of the people. We take good
22:59
Speaker 4: care of the spectator.
23:00
Speaker 5: What about lessons for people to want to pick up
23:01
Speaker 5: the game?
23:02
Speaker 11: Yeah, great question. So Susannah Susannah bar that came in
23:06
Speaker 11: last year. First, I want to say that she was
23:09
Speaker 11: not only top level pickball knowledge and things like that,
23:13
Speaker 11: but she was one of the most kind and genuinely hitter.
23:16
Speaker 5: On the show last year. Didn't John, but I think
23:18
Speaker 5: she called into the show last year.
23:20
Speaker 11: Yeah, she was wonderful and we're excited to have her back.
23:22
Speaker 11: But she is offering lessons for different levels of play,
23:26
Speaker 11: whether you're a beginner, whether you're an advanced player. On Thursday,
23:30
Speaker 11: so Thursday, May twenty ninth, so we'll have that going
23:33
Speaker 11: on as well.
23:34
Speaker 5: I mean, how many people, in whatever their sport is,
23:37
Speaker 5: whether it's as I mentioned the Masters, because it's going
23:40
Speaker 5: on right now. I mean, how many people can say
23:42
Speaker 5: that they got a lesson, you know, from from Michael Jordan,
23:45
Speaker 5: you know, you're getting You're getting you're getting a VP
23:49
Speaker 5: from Aaron Judge or something like that. I mean, how
23:51
Speaker 5: many people can can can say you're actually having the
23:53
Speaker 5: best person to tell you what you're doing wrong or
23:56
Speaker 5: what you need to do to be better.
23:58
Speaker 11: Yeah, exactly. And I would encourag to everyone around to
24:01
Speaker 11: take advantage of this opportunity that we have and you'll
24:04
Speaker 11: learn from one of the best.
24:06
Speaker 5: All right. And where is information available about this? People
24:10
Speaker 5: want to learn more.
24:11
Speaker 4: Well, go to the Charleston The best place to go
24:12
Speaker 4: is the Charleston Pickleball Club Facebook page. That's the best
24:15
Speaker 4: place to go. It's also the Metro nine one facebook page,
24:18
Speaker 4: but the basically the Charleston Pickleball Club Facebook. All right.
24:22
Speaker 5: And for people maybe Johnny that and that are listening
24:25
Speaker 5: to us today, that you know, and you and I've
24:27
Speaker 5: been talking about this for three years now, But for
24:29
Speaker 5: people that maybe don't don't understand what we talk about
24:32
Speaker 5: when we say pickleball, give us a little premer again
24:35
Speaker 5: on what pickleball is. Explain the game.
24:37
Speaker 11: So pickleball is sort of I like to it's a
24:40
Speaker 11: combination of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. It's played on
24:45
Speaker 11: a smaller court, tons of action, fast place to play,
24:49
Speaker 11: and like John said, you'll get great cardio in it.
24:54
Speaker 11: Hearts racing NonStop, and you're going to have a great time.
24:56
Speaker 11: It's very social. You're face to face with people. Like
25:00
Speaker 11: I don't come from a tennis background, but when you're
25:02
Speaker 11: playing tennis, you're stretched all the way across the court.
25:06
Speaker 11: Pickleball you're right up front, you're right there beside each
25:09
Speaker 11: other having a good time. So yeah, I would encourage
25:13
Speaker 11: everyone to come join us.
25:14
Speaker 5: All right, So dates times again, and we'll probably have
25:17
Speaker 5: you on as we get a little bit closer to
25:18
Speaker 5: talk about logistics, because it takes a lot, Johnny, and
25:21
Speaker 5: you've been involved in this since day one, it takes
25:23
Speaker 5: a lot to pull this off, and so we'll have
25:25
Speaker 5: you on again to talk about the logistics. But again,
25:27
Speaker 5: give us the dates, the times, so on and so forth.
25:29
Speaker 11: Thursday, May twenty ninth is when we have the clinics
25:32
Speaker 11: with Susannah bar And the tournament will start on Friday,
25:35
Speaker 11: May thirtieth, which will be singles. May thirty first, which
25:40
Speaker 11: is a Saturday, will be gender doubles. In June first,
25:43
Speaker 11: which is a Sunday, we'll be mixed doubles.
25:45
Speaker 5: All right, And I've got the information posting on my
25:47
Speaker 5: social media and Dave Allan Radio John sent me the
25:49
Speaker 5: flyer and I posted it on there this twenty guys,
25:52
Speaker 5: I appreciate you being here and John trying to retire.
25:55
Speaker 4: I mean, you know, hey, Dave, I'm enjoying life. Pickleball
25:58
Speaker 4: is a big part of my life that it does
26:00
Speaker 4: keep you young, and I'm enjoying it. But I'm enjoying life.
26:03

30:00
Speaker 15: They came, Sponsors came, We had some new people come,
30:04
Speaker 15: and we haven't finished all of the details yet, but
30:08
Speaker 15: I imagine we're going to pass thirty thousand dollars in
30:11
Speaker 15: what we made to support the cause.
30:13
Speaker 5: It's great to have you here this week. And we
30:14
Speaker 5: didn't really plan it this week because this is National
30:16
Speaker 5: Library Week. Raw I had to had my good buddy
30:19
Speaker 5: Megan Tarbett from the Putnam County Library on earlier this
30:22
Speaker 5: week and on the state Wide show. Amanda and I
30:24
Speaker 5: had the director out of Marion County on the show.
30:26
Speaker 5: So we like to talk about literacy and what.
30:29
Speaker 15: They are both friends of Read Aloud West Virginia.
30:31
Speaker 5: Yes, I'm sure they are no doubt about that. And
30:33
Speaker 5: speaking of this, you folks should get some national recognition.
30:36
Speaker 5: I understand. How about that to talk about it.
30:38
Speaker 15: We were so fortunate one of our volunteers in Berkeley
30:41
Speaker 15: County last year I think, communicated with a reporter, Jackie
30:45
Speaker 15: Valley at the Christian Science Monitor because she had written
30:48
Speaker 15: a story about literacy and education and he, just as
30:51
Speaker 15: a reader, emailed her and shared some details and she
30:55
Speaker 15: was intrigued then and she said, oh, I wish I'd
30:58
Speaker 15: known about this. And a year later she got in
31:01
Speaker 15: touch and she was interested in her. Her idea was
31:05
Speaker 15: she wanted to write about the role that the community
31:08
Speaker 15: has in literacy. What outside of school, what do families
31:12
Speaker 15: and the communities contribute to literacy? And she discovered Read
31:16
Speaker 15: Aloud West Virginia was a great example an illustration to talk.
31:21
Speaker 5: About that at any time, don as you well know,
31:26
Speaker 5: anytime we can get positive coverage on dang near anything
31:31
Speaker 5: that's going on to West Virginia. It's good, but particularly
31:33
Speaker 5: when it comes to things like literacy and education and
31:37
Speaker 5: things of that nature.
31:38
Speaker 15: Fact, I know every West Virginia when you see West
31:41
Speaker 15: Virginia pop up on the news or something, you sort
31:43
Speaker 15: of hold your breath until you see how it's gonna go.
31:45
Speaker 5: Here we go, here we go. That's what you mean.
31:48
Speaker 5: But again, anything that we can do positive to put
31:51
Speaker 5: because we are and I've talked about this over the
31:54
Speaker 5: years in Radio don we are really really bad about
31:57
Speaker 5: believing the negative stereotypes about ourselves. We can't expect others
32:04
Speaker 5: that want to play amateur psychologists here, but we can't
32:06
Speaker 5: expect others to view us differently when we don't view
32:09
Speaker 5: ourselves any differently. And when we have these positive things, like,
32:12
Speaker 5: as you said, a national respected publication that caught on
32:17
Speaker 5: to something that was going on in West Virginia as
32:19
Speaker 5: it relates to literacy, education, whatever, they grab a hold
32:24
Speaker 5: of this and it tells the masses that, hey, you know,
32:26
Speaker 5: West Virginia has actually got some good stuff going on.
32:28
Speaker 15: We do some good things. So along those lines, Dave,
32:33
Speaker 15: it's we have to pay attention to when things are
32:35
Speaker 15: bad or when something's wrong because you can't fix it otherwise.
32:39
Speaker 15: But it is very easy to not recognize when you
32:43
Speaker 15: are improving and when you're making progress. And one of
32:47
Speaker 15: the things that was in that story, if anybody wants
32:50
Speaker 15: to look it up, The NAPE scores came out a
32:52
Speaker 15: couple I don't know, a month or two or so ago,
32:55
Speaker 15: and what they showed broadly across the country is that
32:57
Speaker 15: reading scores had not moved very much in most places,
33:01
Speaker 15: and West Virginia was one of the places where the
33:03
Speaker 15: reading scores held study. They didn't drop like they did
33:07
Speaker 15: in some places, but they didn't increase over the previous year.
33:10
Speaker 15: A lot of people nationally held that up as oh, no,
33:15
Speaker 15: nothing's working, this is bad news. I do not subscribe
33:18
Speaker 15: to that interpretation because I see what's going on day
33:23
Speaker 15: to day. I see some improvements. I think we talked
33:26
Speaker 15: about this last time, about how schools across the country,
33:30
Speaker 15: including West Virginia, are improving how they're teaching reading. They
33:34
Speaker 15: are getting back to some things that were things that
33:37
Speaker 15: were known years ago about teaching kids to sound out words.
33:40
Speaker 15: They know a lot more now than even they did then.
33:43
Speaker 15: And so I believe that seeing a year where things
33:46
Speaker 15: are held steady is actually a step could be a
33:49
Speaker 15: step to improvements.
33:50
Speaker 5: I mean there is something again, there is something to
33:52
Speaker 5: be said for, as you said, holding study and not
33:55
Speaker 5: going backwards right. And what I think is interesting because
33:59
Speaker 5: I'm the old guy that complains about everything on this show.
34:01
Speaker 5: At my age, I'm already that guy, and I'll get
34:03
Speaker 5: tagged with that all the time, you know, the exactly.
34:07
Speaker 5: But we are learning though that in some ways, in
34:12
Speaker 5: some ways that the old ways weren't so bad after all.
34:16
Speaker 15: That's right. We even say that. I mean, I'm off
34:18
Speaker 15: for learning new things and trying new things and innovation.
34:21
Speaker 15: But one of the things we say around Read Aloud
34:23
Speaker 15: because sometimes funders only want to fund what is new
34:26
Speaker 15: and innovative, and we say, well, what about what's old
34:30
Speaker 15: and works?
34:31
Speaker 5: Yeah?
34:31
Speaker 15: Yeah, so yeah, there is something to teaching kids how
34:35
Speaker 15: to read in a way that has been shown for
34:37
Speaker 15: more than a century to work.
34:39
Speaker 5: So I had to Don Miller from Read Aloud, West Virginia,
34:41
Speaker 5: Dave Island Show and five eighty Live, brought to you
34:42
Speaker 5: in part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds.
34:46
Speaker 5: One week and a day away from the Gomart home
34:48
Speaker 5: run derby over to Ballpark Saturday, April nineteenth. The tales
34:51
Speaker 5: available on their social media and at dirty Birds Baseball Dot.
34:54
Speaker 5: Kyle will have Jill from the Dirty Birds on the
34:56
Speaker 5: show next week to talk about that. All right, So
34:58
Speaker 5: this is the time of year. You know, most schools
35:01
Speaker 5: I would think in the area have already had their
35:03
Speaker 5: spring break. If not, they're going to have it soon.
35:05
Speaker 5: I think most already have. And I remember, you know,
35:09
Speaker 5: in school around this time when the weather starts, and
35:11
Speaker 5: trust me, at some point it is going to warm
35:13
Speaker 5: up and stay warm for a while. You start thinking
35:15
Speaker 5: about spring, and you start thinking about summer and things
35:18
Speaker 5: of that nature and getting the heck out of the school.
35:21
Speaker 5: But talk about some of the things that your group
35:23
Speaker 5: does during those perhaps summer months, the months off, so
35:28
Speaker 5: to speak exactly.
35:29
Speaker 15: Yes, one of the things we do is help students
35:33
Speaker 15: and schools prepare themselves for summer so that they're set
35:37
Speaker 15: up for students to continue to build their reading skills.
35:42
Speaker 15: And the biggest way we do that is distribute books
35:44
Speaker 15: that excite kids that they will be tempted by and
35:48
Speaker 15: want to spend time with during their summer break. Fun books,
35:52
Speaker 15: things they're genuinely interested in. And the reason is when
35:55
Speaker 15: children read for fun on their own, on their own time,
35:58
Speaker 15: they can't help but practice the lesson in school. It's amazing.
36:01
Speaker 15: Some people think that summer learning loss is a foregone conclusion.
36:05
Speaker 15: I used to think that, But the more I learn
36:08
Speaker 15: and the more I work on this, the more I
36:09
Speaker 15: realize that that is. I believe that is a false assumption.
36:14
Speaker 15: We do have a big problem with summer learning loss.
36:16
Speaker 15: But when children read for fun, I don't know about you.
36:19
Speaker 15: I used to like to read Nancy Drew in third grade.
36:22
Speaker 5: That's not fantastic literature, but it's something.
36:26
Speaker 15: But it's something, and it leads you to the next
36:29
Speaker 15: thing til you get to really fantastic literature, and it
36:32
Speaker 15: has its own charm. But when kids do that, when
36:34
Speaker 15: they spend time with books that they enjoy, they actually
36:39
Speaker 15: they actually maintain their reading skill over summer, and some
36:43
Speaker 15: of them actually increase. So if they're being taught properly
36:46
Speaker 15: during the school year and then they read for pleasure
36:49
Speaker 15: during the summer, they can actually gain reading proficiency over
36:53
Speaker 15: the summer, and at the very least they maintain it.
36:55
Speaker 15: And that is when you start to see reading scores
36:58
Speaker 15: go up year after year. After year when that's happening,
37:01
Speaker 15: when you're not constantly trying to make up for this
37:04
Speaker 15: summer slide, as some researchers call it.
37:07
Speaker 5: The thing about when you talk about kids reading for
37:10
Speaker 5: fun is you know most kids, probably though don are
37:14
Speaker 5: not going to pick that up on their own. So
37:16
Speaker 5: somebody's going to have to explain to them it it
37:20
Speaker 5: can be fun, give it a try. You talked about
37:22
Speaker 5: Nancy Drew. I mean, when I was a kid, I
37:24
Speaker 5: was an avid reader. My stuff was sports books. You know,
37:27
Speaker 5: it was it was, it was. That was my thing
37:29
Speaker 5: still is as a matter of fact. I mean, I
37:30
Speaker 5: love to read about sports. It's something. So I think
37:33
Speaker 5: it's incumbent though, up on parents, guardians, teachers too, and
37:38
Speaker 5: I know I know in in West Virginia schools that
37:40
Speaker 5: I think they most try to do a really good
37:42
Speaker 5: job of teaching. Okay, don't think about reading as something
37:46
Speaker 5: that is an assignment. I have to read three chapters tonight.
37:49
Speaker 2: Now.
37:49
Speaker 5: Sometimes in life you have to do you got to
37:51
Speaker 5: study the manual or whatever. You have to do that.
37:54
Speaker 5: But it's got to But the parents, grandparents, teachers also
37:58
Speaker 5: have to go in and say, hey, you can read
38:00
Speaker 5: for fun. If you like, if you're somebody that is
38:04
Speaker 5: interested in cars, there's some books about cars. You know
38:07
Speaker 5: that you'll want to read how to rebuild that engine,
38:10
Speaker 5: or you'll want to read about science, or read about
38:13
Speaker 5: sports or entertainment or whatever.
38:14
Speaker 15: You are. So on it, Dave, you have nailed it exactly.
38:18
Speaker 3: This.
38:18
Speaker 15: We distribute a lot of sports books, and we distribute
38:22
Speaker 15: a lot of books about cars. It might surprise you
38:24
Speaker 15: that children ask us for books about cooking. Kids want cookbooks.
38:27
Speaker 5: Cooking is huge, and the case is here and the
38:29
Speaker 5: kids cooking thing, not cooking kids, by the way, that's
38:33
Speaker 5: a thing because you know all these shows you that
38:35
Speaker 5: are on the web and on TV about you know,
38:38
Speaker 5: these kids baking things. Yeah, it's a big thing.
38:40
Speaker 15: And you think about that. When that book, when that
38:43
Speaker 15: thing you have learned in school, and that book has
38:46
Speaker 15: relevance to you in something you want to do in
38:48
Speaker 15: your own life, that is the best reinforcement that you
38:51
Speaker 15: can get. So I want to tell you about something
38:54
Speaker 15: that's called social contagion. Social contagion is a real thing.
38:58
Speaker 15: We tend to do what the people are around us
39:00
Speaker 15: are doing. If it becomes part of the local culture,
39:04
Speaker 15: to not clean out the coffee cup in the office.
39:06
Speaker 15: Then everybody leaves their dirty dishes.
39:08
Speaker 5: It's as if you've been in our building.
39:11
Speaker 15: I've been in the workplace for a long time. If
39:15
Speaker 15: people around you read books or magazines, or sports features
39:20
Speaker 15: or the sports page, then you are more likely to
39:24
Speaker 15: pick those things up. So we tell parents and grandparents
39:28
Speaker 15: and aunts and uncles who sometimes think. I know this.
39:32
Speaker 15: As an adult around some kids, you sometimes think you
39:35
Speaker 15: have no influence at all. Everything else gets the kids
39:38
Speaker 15: attention and has an influence on them. But actually the
39:41
Speaker 15: loving adults around them have more influence than it sometimes
39:44
Speaker 15: feels like. And so if the adults around them bring
39:48
Speaker 15: books into the environment, sports magazines, cookbooks, car books, anything
39:54
Speaker 15: that interests your family, and you spend time with it,
39:57
Speaker 15: you don't even You can start just looking at the
40:00
Speaker 15: pictures and browsing. But if you make fifteen or twenty
40:04
Speaker 15: minutes a day to read together, read aloud to kids,
40:08
Speaker 15: or if you don't really enjoy that, you find somebody
40:10
Speaker 15: in the family who does. At first, it might feel
40:14
Speaker 15: strange if you haven't been doing it for a while,
40:16
Speaker 15: but eventually, not very long, you'll hit something that everybody
40:20
Speaker 15: enjoys and you won't want to stop after ten minutes,
40:23
Speaker 15: or you won't want to stop after fifteen minutes, or
40:25
Speaker 15: you'll look forward to it the next day. And those
40:27
Speaker 15: little habits really add up over time.

Speaker 5: You're doing great work there, don you and the organization

Speaker 5: high school basketball game. Now this didn't involve fans. This
45:38
Speaker 5: involved a player on the court where a flagrant foul
45:42
Speaker 5: and now the police and the court system have gotten involved.
45:45
Speaker 5: Speedy Bevans and Fred Pursinger will stop by the way
45:48
Speaker 5: in on that place is Friday, which means we do
45:50
Speaker 5: the lunch spot thing you the listeners call or text us,
45:53
Speaker 5: tell us where we need to eat, what you're eating,
45:55
Speaker 5: All things food and a two thirty open line. West
45:57
Speaker 5: Virginia Metro News Midday powered by selangel Off with thirteen
46:01
Speaker 5: News and Tonight Live anchor Amanda Baron and Me coming
46:03
Speaker 5: up noon until three today. Quick follow up from yesterday's
46:08
Speaker 5: show about the price of parking in the town Center
46:11
Speaker 5: going up. Tex says it maybe five bucks, but that's
46:16
Speaker 5: more than double what people are paying now, and it
46:18
Speaker 5: wasn't publicized. I parked there, says a Texture, on Tuesday
46:22
Speaker 5: for a conference. Of course, as always, they fumble things
46:24
Speaker 5: up and screwed up our prepaid parking. I pulled a
46:27
Speaker 5: Karen says the texture, and they let me through when
46:30
Speaker 5: they realized there were eighty more people coming just like me.
46:33
Speaker 5: I'm probably one of the few faithful shoppers left, and
46:35
Speaker 5: I'm not going to the mall as much now. Honestly,
46:39
Speaker 5: parking should be free to encourage more people to shop,
46:41
Speaker 5: and no one really cares about what's happening to the mall,
46:44
Speaker 5: and so that's kind of where that is. Yeah, I mean,
46:48
Speaker 5: this thing is really suddenly. I'll say this. The Charlestontown
46:52
Speaker 5: Center has gotten more play and more mentions in the
46:58
Speaker 5: eyes of the public in probably the last two or
47:01
Speaker 5: three days, and it has in the last two or
47:03
Speaker 5: three years. Here's what for you, Okay.
47:05
Speaker 7: I was to C. J.
47:06
Speaker 5: Meadows by the way, good morning, thank you.
47:08
Speaker 12: I was going to park on the Embassy suite side,
47:10
Speaker 12: the one that's controlled by them for the state tournament,
47:12
Speaker 12: because it was just more convenient for me.
47:14
Speaker 5: I just pulled on through those fifteen Bucks. Well, so, yeah, well,
47:21
Speaker 5: I mean that's their parking. I think in orge what
47:22
Speaker 5: they want.
47:23
Speaker 12: That's what I'm saying. Yeah, but I mean it's the
47:24
Speaker 12: same garage. It's still connected as I mean, it's it's
47:28
Speaker 12: I and I explained it. I talked to city officials
47:30
Speaker 12: yesterday and I know Chris did a story on it,
47:32
Speaker 12: and it's it's very complicated. How but one thing about
47:34
Speaker 12: it is this is not on the city of Charleston.
47:36
Speaker 12: Because people want to blame the city of Charles Cara.
47:38
Speaker 5: This is not no, no, it's it's it's it's well
47:41
Speaker 5: beyond that. Let me break it down for you a
47:43
Speaker 5: little bit later, Okay, because I got all my notes
47:45
Speaker 5: from yesterday. You're gonna ask me too quick here, let
47:48
Speaker 5: me let me quickly try to If you don't want
47:50
Speaker 5: to pay it don't work there, well, and there's plenty
47:53
Speaker 5: of other parking spots around. Let me see. Sorry, you
47:57
Speaker 5: know you're fine, Okay. Kira is completely out of it.
48:00
Speaker 5: An entity created by the old bondholders bought the garages
48:04
Speaker 5: at auction, so they own and operate the two garages
48:06
Speaker 5: connected to the mall. The owner of the Marriotte owns
48:09
Speaker 5: the garage beside that hotel, and Chris actually did an
48:13
Speaker 5: interview and it Ara does this morning on the Morning
48:15
Speaker 5: News with the people that are currently in charge of it.
48:17
Speaker 5: On an unrelated note, why are so many people upset
48:21
Speaker 5: about a new hotel being being born being built in
48:25
Speaker 5: downtown Charleston. The plans were released a couple of days ago,
48:28
Speaker 5: and what should have been tj a positive story becomes
48:30
Speaker 5: negative with everyone commenting on their favorite social media about
48:34
Speaker 5: how Charleston doesn't need another hotel and there's nothing going
48:38
Speaker 5: on in Charleston. Tell me you don't know anything about
48:40
Speaker 5: your community. Without telling me you don't know anything going
48:43
Speaker 5: on in your community.
48:44
Speaker 12: I mean it's private capital, right, the city's not building
48:47
Speaker 12: the hotel, right.
48:48
Speaker 5: But my point is is it becomes this thing is, well,
48:50
Speaker 5: why does Charleston need another I'll tell you why. Because
48:53
Speaker 5: they're sold out, That's why. Because you don't know, people
48:56
Speaker 5: don't look beyond their front yard and realize that they
48:59
Speaker 5: may not be interested in the stuff that's going on.
49:02
Speaker 5: I know the people that own and operate the hotel
49:05
Speaker 5: off the Tays Valley exit there to sleep in. Yeah,
49:07
Speaker 5: completely sold out, completely sold out almost every weekend. And
49:10
Speaker 5: it's because and that's because people can't get closer to
49:13
Speaker 5: Charles Now. Granted, there are great things. I'm president of
49:16
Speaker 5: Putnam County Tourism, so I can say that there are
49:18
Speaker 5: great things going on in Putnam County as well. That
49:21
Speaker 5: hotel was past weekend, was completely sold out, mainly because
49:24
Speaker 5: of some things going on there, but also things going
49:27
Speaker 5: on at Shawnee. We had the home show going on,
49:30
Speaker 5: all these other things. So just miss me to quote
49:32
Speaker 5: my favorite person, one of my favorite people, Pastor Marlon Collins,
49:35
Speaker 5: miss me with all this, there's nothing going on in Charleston,
49:39
Speaker 5: and we don't need another hotel. We absolutely need another hotel,
49:43
Speaker 5: two or three hotels.
49:45
Speaker 12: My view on it's even simpler than that. I don't
49:47
Speaker 12: know the hotel business, but guys that are investing in hotels,
49:50
Speaker 12: those are not cheap to build.
49:52
Speaker 6: They typically do.
49:53
Speaker 5: Their due diligence.
49:54
Speaker 12: And if they want to put private capital at risk
49:56
Speaker 12: and bring something into this, what do you want? You
49:58
Speaker 12: want it to be a blank space? I to be empty?
50:01
Speaker 12: Why is it bad?
50:02
Speaker 5: Well, the people are saying we don't need another Yeah,
50:04
Speaker 5: it's not their decision. But no, but and I agree
50:07
Speaker 5: with you. You and I are pretty much lined up politically,
50:10
Speaker 5: ninety nine percent of the till we are a Chamber
50:13
Speaker 5: of Commerce country club. Republicans were called not welcome in
50:16
Speaker 5: the party, by the way, by most Republicans who said
50:18
Speaker 5: I wanted to go, well, I'm not a Republican anymore so,
50:22
Speaker 5: but that's what this is the whole thing about, people
50:24
Speaker 5: saying we don't need Hell, yes we need we need
50:27
Speaker 5: two or three more hotels in Charleston and the surrounding areas.
50:31
Speaker 5: But anyway, what's on the big show today, sir.
50:33
Speaker 12: So coming out with ten oh six, We're going to
50:35
Speaker 12: break down reaction to Laura Wakem Chapman. She's a Senator
50:39
Speaker 12: from Ohio County. She had some strong words. Of course,
50:41
Speaker 12: she tried to revive the vaccine exemption bill, ended up
50:44
Speaker 12: pulling it yesterday. Remarks by members late last night, Dave,
50:47
Speaker 12: and She's had some very you know, tough words for people,
50:51
Speaker 12: different industries, different folks on why that fell apart. We
50:54
Speaker 12: will play those and react. Coming up at ten thirty.
50:57
Speaker 12: Chris Stirewalt stops by Hoppies in the House at eleven
51:00
Speaker 12: oh six. Brad may Or may not join us, depending
51:03
Speaker 12: on whether or not he's held hostage in one of
51:04
Speaker 12: the houses of the Legislature this morning as they're both
51:07
Speaker 12: gaveled in, and then of course everyone's favorites eleven thirty.
51:11
Speaker 5: Steamerly, Steamerly.
51:12
Speaker 12: I think it's going to be big, you think so
51:15
Speaker 12: this week, And there's something in the last week of
51:17
Speaker 12: the legislature. We've been a little more opinionated this week
51:20
Speaker 12: than we otherwise.
51:21
Speaker 5: Happens this is when it gets to a certain level,
51:22
Speaker 5: and you know, this gets to a certain at this time,
51:25
Speaker 5: people start looking around and saying what have we done?
51:28
Speaker 5: And there, and the public as well as elected officials.
51:31
Speaker 5: And I told somebody the other day, I said, it's
51:33
Speaker 5: kind of hard at this time. Now you guys are
51:35
Speaker 5: at the capitol, so that you've got them walking by.
51:36
Speaker 5: But on shows like this and the shows similar to
51:38
Speaker 5: this air in Morgantown and UH and Beckley and other places,
51:42
Speaker 5: we have a hard time getting the elected officials on
51:44
Speaker 5: the air at this time because they're busy and im
51:47
Speaker 5: and I'm perfectly fine with that. But starting next I
51:49
Speaker 5: promise you, over the weekend, my phone is going to
51:51
Speaker 5: start ringing off the hook with these story legs to tell,
51:54
Speaker 5: wanting to say, here's what I did, and here's why
51:57
Speaker 5: I didn't get something done. That's what's gonna happen. It's
52:01
Speaker 5: everybody's fault. But mind Dave, I was trying to do
52:03
Speaker 5: my part.
52:04
Speaker 2: But this guy and.
52:05
Speaker 5: This gal, those those fill in name here, the leadership
52:09
Speaker 5: or the party or whatever.
52:10
Speaker 2: I predict.
52:10
Speaker 13: We'll get a.
52:11
Speaker 12: Scene today about you and I saying that Charleston is
52:13
Speaker 12: over hoteled.
52:14
Speaker 5: Bring it on, brought it on, bring it on, man,
52:16
Speaker 5: bringing the I'll argue with anybody, and I got statistical
52:19
Speaker 5: stuff that'll back it up. He got numbers, I got numbers, man.
52:23
Speaker 5: Coming up on Monday's show again, we're going to talk
52:25
Speaker 5: about the Maddox Foundation, also small business semi related in
52:29
Speaker 5: Charleston with city councilor Emmitt Pepper and others on the show.
