- Lucas: Welcome back to another episode of Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and this is Luna. Luna: Hi everyone. It is so good to be back with you both. Last week we talked about the utensils in the kitchen. Lucas: That is right. We learned fork, knife, and spoon. Now we want to see what you actually do with them. Luna: Exactly. So today we are learning some cooking verbs. I am ready to chop, stir, and boil. Lucas: Perfect. Let us start with the first action. When you cut vegetables into small pieces. Luna: I think that is snijden. But how do I say I am doing it right now? Lucas: Good question. In Dutch, we often just use the present tense to describe what you are doing in the moment. Luna: Okay. So if I am cutting the vegetable, I say Ik snijd de groente. Lucas: Yes. Listen carefully. Ik snijd de groente. Luna: Ik snijd de groente. Wait, did I get the pronunciation right? Lucas: You did. Snijd. Like a quick, sharp sound. Ik snijd de groente. Luna: Ik snijd de groente. That feels very direct. I like it. Lucas: It is efficient. Just like cutting. Now, let us imagine the saucepan. You are mixing the ingredients together. Luna: Stirring. The word is roeren. So, Ik roer de saus. Lucas: Exactly. The sauce. Listen to the rhythm. Ik roer de saus. Luna: Ik roer de saus. Oh, I love that one. It sounds soft. Roer. Lucas: It does have a nice flow. Ik roer de saus. Repeat it once more for me. Luna: Ik roer de saus. There it is. I feel like a real chef now. Lucas: Almost there. One more essential action. Getting the water hot for pasta or rice. Luna: Boiling. Koken. So, Ik kook het water. Lucas: Spot on. Listen closely. Ik kook het water. Luna: Ik kook het water. Okay, I need to check my pronunciation. Ik kook het water. Lucas: Very clear. Kook. With a long O sound. Ik kook het water. Luna: Ik kook het water. I think I have these three down. Cut, stir, boil. Lucas: Let us put them together in a little scene. You are making dinner for friends. Luna: Okay. First I prepare the veggies. Ik snijd de groente. Lucas: Then you tend to the main dish. Ik roer de saus. Luna: And I make sure the pot is ready. Ik kook het water. Lucas: Beautiful. You are flowing through them perfectly. Let us try one more time, slowly. Luna: Ik snijd de groente. Ik roer de saus. Ik kook het water. Lucas: Excellent. Before we continue, I want to take a brief moment to talk about how this show works. What do you say first? Lucas: You start with the base ingredients. Try saying it again. Ik snijd de groente. Luna: Ik snijd de groente. Yes. And then I move to the stove. Ik roer de saus. Lucas: And finally, the heat. Ik kook het water. Luna: It is amazing how many actions fit into just three short sentences. Lucas: It is. And you can mix and match them. You can cook water while you stir the sauce. Luna: True. Efficiency is key. Ik kook het water while Ik snijd de groente. Lucas: Multitasking. You are getting advanced already. Let us review the words one last time. Luna: Snijd. For cutting. Ik snijd de groente. Lucas: Roer. For stirring. Ik roer de saus. Luna: Kook. For boiling. Ik kook het water. Lucas: Well done. Practice these when you are in your own kitchen. Even if you are just making toast. Luna: Or tea. I can definitely say Ik kook het water for my morning tea. Lucas: Exactly. Small steps lead to big progress. Keep practicing until we chat again. Luna: Thanks for joining us on this episode of Learn Dutch with Fexingo. See you next time.
