Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to UConn Football Coaches Show. Jason Candle with
- 0:02Speaker 1: us each and every week as the Huskies plow through
- 0:05Speaker 1: the schedule. A third of the way through the schedule, 2-2.
- 0:09Speaker 1: A big one coming up with Syracuse. The Orange come
- 0:12Speaker 1: in 1-2. A couple of losses in the ACC, most
- 0:16Speaker 1: recently against Pittsburgh, 27-13. Orange fell behind 17-0, 24-10. Pittsburgh
- 0:19Speaker 1: ran the ball very well, Jason, this past week. how
- 0:29Speaker 1: does that figure into game planning when you look at
- 0:32Speaker 1: the previous game and what teams did to your opponent?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it always starts there. You know, unique
- 0:39Speaker 2: situation this week. I mean, the defensive coordinator at Syracuse
- 0:42Speaker 2: was my defensive coordinator at Toledo for the last five,
- 0:45Speaker 2: six years. So, you know, we know each other very well. And,
- 0:49Speaker 2: you know, I just know that they're going to have
- 0:51Speaker 2: a good plan and they're going to, you know, be
- 0:53Speaker 2: really stout in what they do. Big inside of defensive tackle.
- 0:56Speaker 2: very good on the edge with a couple of good
- 0:57Speaker 2: pass rushers, very long in the secondary. Um, you know,
- 1:01Speaker 2: it was a good defensive unit, you know, and you
- 1:03Speaker 2: know how a particular team, you know, had success that,
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know, beforehand, you know, they're going to work really
- 1:09Speaker 2: hard at fixing those mistakes to see on tape. So
- 1:12Speaker 2: you're going to see if they got them fixed. And
- 1:13Speaker 2: then if they did, you got to move on to
- 1:15Speaker 2: something else. And that's just the game within the game.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Uh, you mentioned it earlier when we were talking in
- 1:19Speaker 1: this show that, uh, they threw two quarterbacks out there
- 1:22Speaker 1: against Pittsburgh, Steve Angeli, we know about, uh, Arthur to
- 1:26Speaker 1: come back against the Huskies, uh, up in, uh, Syracuse
- 1:30Speaker 1: recently and overtime they won. And then, then they brought
- 1:33Speaker 1: in Amari Odom off the bench. All he did is
- 1:35Speaker 1: go eight for eight. So how do you prepare for
- 1:38Speaker 1: two quarterbacks? Not one.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that, you know, um, you gotta, you
- 1:44Speaker 2: gotta do your, your due diligence on both of them. Um,
- 1:48Speaker 2: I think that, you know, I, and I, and I
- 1:50Speaker 2: do think we'll see both, honestly, I think that we'll,
- 1:53Speaker 2: you know, we will, There will be, you know, a
- 1:55Speaker 2: mixture of both. Or I don't know, you know, I
- 1:58Speaker 2: don't know how it will all play itself out. So
- 2:01Speaker 2: you got to really, you got to dig through and
- 2:04Speaker 2: you got to spend the time and, you know, dissect
- 2:06Speaker 2: the tape and see what you see and try to,
- 2:09Speaker 2: you know, put the plan together to affect whoever their
- 2:12Speaker 2: guy is out there, I guess is the best way
- 2:13Speaker 2: to put it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, we've got about a minute left with Jason Candle.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Their wide receivers are pretty impressive. Darius Johnson, Jawan Johnson,
- 2:21Speaker 1: nine catches between them. When you're looking at a unit
- 2:25Speaker 1: like that by the opposition, do you look at, you know,
- 2:28Speaker 1: the patterns they run, the athleticism? What's the first thing
- 2:31Speaker 1: you kind of try to analyze when you look at
- 2:33Speaker 1: the opposition's wide outs like that? All of it.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You know, for me, you know, that position is all
- 2:40Speaker 2: about can you create separation? And they can, you know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: and then I think from there you got to ask yourself, like,
- 2:46Speaker 2: can you play man to man coverage? No, you can't.
- 2:49Speaker 2: how much can you play without really sacrificing what you
- 2:52Speaker 2: have and, you know, and the guys that you have.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And again, that goes back into the pressure plan and
- 2:57Speaker 2: what that looks like. And, you know, I'm really trying
- 3:01Speaker 2: to affect the clock of the quarterback and, you know, the,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you know, the timing and rhythm with the receivers is
- 3:05Speaker 2: a major part of that timing, you know, of that clock. So,
- 3:09Speaker 2: you know, you, you pick your spots, you try not
- 3:11Speaker 2: to live in, you know, one specific thing the entire
- 3:13Speaker 2: game where the quarterback can get a beat on what,
- 3:16Speaker 2: what to expect prior to the ball getting in his
- 3:18Speaker 2: hands after the snap. And, you know, try to live
- 3:22Speaker 2: with it that way. And if, again, you get into
- 3:24Speaker 2: the game and you've got to make some adjustments and
- 3:25Speaker 2: you've got to, you know, try to challenge a specific
- 3:28Speaker 2: guy because you feel like that's their go-to matchup for
- 3:30Speaker 2: this entire game, for this entire plan of the game,
- 3:32Speaker 2: you've got to be able to adapt and adjust on
- 3:35Speaker 2: the fly. And I think that's, you know, that's why
- 3:37Speaker 2: we all love pro football because there's so much, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 2: there's a chess match every weekend as it pertains to matchups. And,
- 3:43Speaker 2: you know, that's no different here sprinkling down to the
- 3:46Speaker 2: college game in today's day and age.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Yeah, looking forward to it. I'd say this is going
- 3:50Speaker 1: to be a big one. Syracuse and UConn coming up
- 3:53Speaker 1: on Saturday, noon kickoff. Coach, we appreciate your time. Best
- 3:57Speaker 1: of luck. Go get them. Beat the Orange. Thank you.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Appreciate it. All right. Jason Kendall, back with more. Tommy Warner,
- 4:06Speaker 1: Matt Reagan coming up of the Huskies here on Learfield.
