- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. OK, we did survive the
- 0:24bombogenesis bomb cyclone here in Sydney.
- 0:27The weather was wild the last two days.
- 0:30But wasn't Annabelle's at home Mini scroll like such a vibe?
- 0:34Like the background was so cute. I feel like she was really
- 0:36comfortable and like really enjoying herself in the episode.
- 0:39If you guys haven't listened to her mini tech from yesterday,
- 0:42definitely go listen. It was like definitely a vibe.
- 0:44All right, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 0:47So the first story that I have for you guys, this my draw like
- 0:50on the floor. This shocked me to my core.
- 0:54Gigi Gorgeous and Nat Sketti have filed for divorce OG
- 0:58YouTube. Gigi Gorgeous and her husband
- 0:59Nat Sketti have announced their divorce after almost six years
- 1:03of marriage. In a statement from a
- 1:04representative issued to People magazine, the two quote have
- 1:07amicably decided to part ways. The statement continues.
- 1:11While they've decided to end their marriage, they remain
- 1:13friends and have the utmost love and respect for each other.
- 1:16I, I feel like I was like the Gigi Gorgeous audience.
- 1:20Like I, I am basically her exact age.
- 1:22She's from Mississauga, I'm from Oakville in Canada and I just
- 1:25have been following her and her journey for so long and I
- 1:29followed her marriage so closely and I just like actually can't
- 1:32believe this. They seemed so in love.
- 1:34They really seemed like each other's person.
- 1:36I do have to wonder if their IVF journey had a role in this
- 1:40because I know they've been trying to have a child for a
- 1:42long time. So as I said, Gigi of course is
- 1:44kind of like an icon of like the OG YouTube beauty community.
- 1:48She documented her transition on YouTube tube.
- 1:51Like, she really was such a pioneer in that space.
- 1:54Nats, her husband is a 32 year old fashion designer, LGBTQIA
- 1:58activist and heir to Getty Oil. The two started dating in 2016
- 2:03and were engaged 2 years later. They were married in July 2019.
- 2:08Since then, like I said, the pair has been open about their
- 2:11experience trying to grow a family.
- 2:13So they were doing IVF in 2023, Gigi told PEOPLE.
- 2:17Quote, The update on the IVF is that we have 6 embryos right
- 2:20now. There's four girls and two boys,
- 2:22which we're really excited about.
- 2:23It feels very surreal to say because just a year ago I wasn't
- 2:26able to give my sample and we weren't going to be able to
- 2:29create any embryos. I know Gigi stopped hormones so
- 2:33that, you know, she could produce sperm and they could
- 2:35hopefully have a baby. Like this is just shocking to
- 2:39me. I have to imagine the stress of
- 2:41the IVF journey maybe played a role in this.
- 2:43But I'm just so sad. Is anybody else like shocked?
- 2:45I when I saw this news this morning, literally my jaw hit
- 2:47the floor. So Gigi and Nats neither have
- 2:49publicly talked, talked about the divorce or posted about it.
- 2:52But either way, obviously I'm like wishing them the best.
- 2:55I'm so upset about this. I'm, I'm like distraught.
- 2:58I love them as a couple. They just, they really felt like
- 3:01they belonged together, like they were each other's person.
- 3:04OK, and happier news. Sabrina Carpenter has officially
- 3:07raised $1 million for charities with her short and sweet tour.
- 3:11The Sabrina Carpenter Fund has raised over $1 million in less
- 3:14than a year since it launched. The fund is in partnership with
- 3:17Plus One, which is a nonprofit organization that helped artist
- 3:21with advocacy campaigns. So Sabrina partnered with Plus
- 3:24one for her short and sweet tour where $1.00 from every ticket
- 3:27sale was going to the fund or is going to the fund.
- 3:29The Sabrina Carpenter Fund supports charities like Best
- 3:32Friends, Animal society, The Jed Foundation, Rainbow Railroad
- 3:36Rain. I can't say that Rainbow
- 3:38Railroad and music cares. OK, I wanted to talk about this
- 3:42story because it's obviously a bit of like APR fluff piece, but
- 3:46I feel like this story makes sense in terms of its timing.
- 3:49It's obviously a milestone that I assume her team would have
- 3:52promoted regardless, but it obviously also comes at the
- 3:56heels of her album cover backlash.
- 3:58And during this backlash, I don't actually think I mentioned
- 4:01this when I covered it last week, but during the backlash,
- 4:03there were comparisons between her and Olivia Rodrigo.
- 4:07And you know how Olivia Rodrigo ego is so vocal about women's
- 4:11reproductive rights and she makes it very clear that a
- 4:14portion of her tour sales or merch or whatever she's doing is
- 4:18going to different causes. She always kind of stands for
- 4:20something bigger. And some of the criticism around
- 4:23Sabrina's album cover was like, you know, not only did it feel a
- 4:27certain type of way, but also it felt like Sabrina has just in
- 4:30general kind of stood for like nothing, quote, UN quote.
- 4:32That is like general criticism. That's not me saying that.
- 4:35So obviously this was a very smart story to get out there
- 4:38because it kind of shuts down that narrative, reframes her
- 4:40tour, reframes her image, kind of brings people back to what
- 4:43she's been trying to do or like a part of like her artistry and
- 4:46what she's been trying to do in the public eye.
- 4:48It's like an education piece almost.
- 4:50You know, it's like without having to like put out a
- 4:53statement about this or like trying to kind of spin the
- 4:55narrative in a certain type of way, like this story tells the
- 4:59narrative for her. Also, I was going to talk about
- 5:01the like crazy Celebrity cruise going on right now, the Ritz
- 5:04Carlton cruise. If you guys want me to talk
- 5:06about it in mini tomorrow, let me know because I don't really
- 5:09know what I would say, but Annabelle and I were like
- 5:11tossing up. Do we include it?
- 5:12Do we not? And it's basically just like
- 5:14every single a list celebrity in the whole world is going on this
- 5:16cruise. And I don't know if you guys
- 5:19want me to cover it, let me know.
- 5:20But I I thought we could keep it out for today because I didn't
- 5:24really know what else there was to say, but I can cover it
- 5:26tomorrow if you want. OK, and the last word that I
- 5:28have for you guys is I wanted to talk about a conversation that
- 5:31I'm seeing happen online, specifically on TikTok, but you
- 5:35know, on some other platforms too, about how we as users are
- 5:39starting to fall for fake and sometimes AI generated sympathy
- 5:44traps. This could also be a deep dive.
- 5:46Let me know if you guys want us to do a deep dive into that.
- 5:48OK, so I think a lot of us will have seen that viral video by a
- 5:53woman named Pam, quote UN quote, who seems to be like
- 5:56middle-aged. And she posted two photos, one
- 5:58being a selfie of her in the car.
- 6:00And then the second was a young couple with a baby.
- 6:02And it's that trend that's like the swipe across trend where
- 6:04it's like, but there was once a time.
- 6:06And the trend is essentially people talking about like how
- 6:09they're they're alone now or they're in like, you know, kind
- 6:11of a sad place. But there was once a time when
- 6:15they had family around or they had, I don't know, a successful
- 6:18career or whatever it is. And it's people like pulling on
- 6:21the nostalgia strings of like, things are kind of worse now
- 6:24than they used to be. But I had everything at one
- 6:26point. OK, so this is like a trend.
- 6:28So in this video by Pam, quote UN quote, Pam, the first slide
- 6:32is like I said, a selfie of her in a car, a middle-aged woman.
- 6:35And it says eating dinner alone didn't cook much anymore.
- 6:38House is very quiet by it and the second photo when you swipe
- 6:41across says there was once a time and it's like I said her or
- 6:44like a young couple with a baby. OK, so one TikTok user named
- 6:48Alyssa went on to share this post and Alyssa's post is
- 6:51getting quite viral now too, saying that she felt something
- 6:55was off with it. So after doing some reverse
- 6:57image searching, she discovered that both the pictures had been
- 7:01sourced from the Internet. One even came from Pinterest.
- 7:04Alysa said, Quote, people are out here writing morbid fan
- 7:06fiction of these random people without their knowledge or
- 7:09consent. Alyssa then went on to note that
- 7:12Pam's quote UN quote post had accumulated over 3.7 million
- 7:16likes and over 16 million views. Alyssa's video and the points
- 7:20she's making are so true. There are so many of these like
- 7:24fake sympathy traps for virality, for engagement and for
- 7:28money. And we actually see this a lot
- 7:29with older people on TikTok. And I'm not saying that they are
- 7:33the ones doing it. I think sometimes they are AI
- 7:35generated and I think sometimes they're just going along with
- 7:37like whatever their child or their grandchild or whoever is
- 7:40telling them to do so they'll be like saying things to the
- 7:42camera, trying to get like sympathy.
- 7:44They're like, Oh yeah, you know, if you stay for one minute, then
- 7:47I can do XYZ. I can pay for my wife's funeral
- 7:49or whatever it is. But if you go into these
- 7:51accounts, that's what the whole account is.
- 7:53It's just like an older person being used for sympathy, for
- 7:57likes, for views, for money. OK, so there's a few things that
- 8:01this phenomenon can really show us.
- 8:03Firstly, it shows us how deep the pursuit of virality actually
- 8:07goes, to the point where people are willing to fake it.
- 8:09They're willing to fake the person who owns the account.
- 8:12They're willing to fake these stories.
- 8:14They're willing to fake hard times so people can donate to
- 8:17them or watch their videos so they make more money.
- 8:20And this isn't new. Social media users have long
- 8:22fabricated stories to go viral. But Co opting someone else's
- 8:27story and pictures is arguably worse.
- 8:30These are innocent people. I think that Alyssa found Pam's
- 8:34picture on LinkedIn. Like this is her LinkedIn
- 8:37picture. OK, now her face, this is
- 8:39associated with this like sob story and there's millions of
- 8:43people that are feeling so sorry for her for this fake story that
- 8:47doesn't exist. And I'm sure that people in her
- 8:48real life have seen this being like, what the fuck is this?
- 8:51It's so invasive and it's so weird.
- 8:53And you know, I think it really feeds into the main character
- 8:56syndrome that we see so much on TikTok.
- 8:58Everybody's obsessed with virality.
- 9:00Anyone can go viral. But I think with the rise of AI,
- 9:04because a lot of this also is AI generated, I think we can only
- 9:07expect this to worsen. It's becoming increasingly
- 9:10easier for social media users to fabricate content, spread
- 9:14misinformation, like I said, create entire accounts of AI
- 9:17generated people who are essentially begging for money.
- 9:20On top of this, I think sympathy trapping and people falling for
- 9:24these traps and and like, OK, it's like not our fault.
- 9:27You know, I saw that video, I saw Pam's video and I thought,
- 9:29Oh my God. But then I also thought that
- 9:32picture looks a little bit off, you know, that second picture.
- 9:36But yeah, like, of course, like we are naturally inclined.
- 9:38I mean, I don't know, I'm naturally inclined to believe,
- 9:41you know, I don't watch something on the Internet and
- 9:43think initially like, oh, that must be fake.
- 9:46I definitely look at accounts and I look at content I see.
- 9:49And I initially believe, unless it's so obviously AI generated,
- 9:53I initially believe the person is telling the truth.
- 9:55I think a lot of us are just kind of wired like that.
- 9:57But I do think it highlights, you know, how so many of us
- 10:00continue to struggle with media literacy and the ability to spot
- 10:05fake content that is posted and to just kind of like jump on
- 10:08these viral trends to, you know, have this moment of virality and
- 10:13attention and success. And TikTok has not just
- 10:16democratized virality and fame, it's democratized income for a
- 10:20lot of people. It's it's made it so that a lot
- 10:22of people can make additional income, like quite literally
- 10:24from their homes. And that hasn't always been
- 10:26possible. Plus, if you think about how we
- 10:28behave on TikTok, so many of us just scroll mindlessly that of
- 10:32course it makes sense that we're not always going to clock stuff
- 10:34like this. Half the time you're like, not
- 10:36fully conscious. Half the time, you know, you're
- 10:38falling asleep or you're watching TV at the same time or
- 10:41whatever it is, you're on the bus.
- 10:42Like, whatever, you're taking in so much content when you're
- 10:45scrolling, it's just like constantly being bombarded with
- 10:49stimulus. So yeah, it makes sense that
- 10:51things like this are happening. They're believed.
- 10:53And the fakeness of it is falling through the cracks.
- 10:56But I do think anyone who is making fake accounts of people
- 11:01using real people's photos to generate sympathy views
- 11:05attention money for yourself. I feel like that is just way too
- 11:08far. That is super unethical and you
- 11:11need to stop. Not that I think anyone that
- 11:13listens to this podcast is doing that.
- 11:15I feel like it's such a violation.
- 11:16Anyways guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
