- 0:17Find yourself in.
- 0:25I am the host of the Hope and Possibilities podcast.
- 0:28I'm Nola Simon, and thank you for joining me today.
- 0:31This topic is self-trust, so there's a lot of talk about how trust
- 0:37itself is declining worldwide and people are in trust governments.
- 0:43They're not trusting organizations, they're not trusting other
- 0:47countries, politicians.
- 0:51Religious leaders all that kinda stuff.
- 0:54So there's a lot of ink being spilled about the fact that employers are
- 0:59really the only people that, a lot of people trust, and even that's declining.
- 1:05So the interesting thing about this is the company that actually issues
- 1:08a lot of the trust reports that are referenced in these articles that
- 1:12are written about trust is Edelman.
- 1:14And one year I asked Edelman, who self-employed people trust, and they
- 1:21blew me off because self-employed people are not their core audience.
- 1:25So they sell to.
- 1:27Organizations.
- 1:28They sell to governments, they sell to business
- 1:33and self-employed people, honestly, unless they really become successful and grow and
- 1:40become organizations themselves that are well funded are the Edelman core business.
- 1:46So they blew me off and told me that people who are
- 1:49self-employed trust themselves, which you know that's true, but.
- 1:57They also trust other people as well too, but who do they trust
- 2:02and how does that work for them when they don't have an employer?
- 2:08And their interactions with organizations look different than people who are
- 2:13employed full-time and their income streams are different and their
- 2:19version of stability is different.
- 2:22So one of the things I wanted to talk about is actually self-trust.
- 2:26So who do you trust?
- 2:29And honestly, a lot of times that comes with self-trust.
- 2:32Now that may sound easy, but honestly, self-trust can be challenging as well too.
- 2:40Especially when you're self-employed and you don't actually have a lot of.
- 2:45Role models who are working the same way that you do, who are
- 2:48living the same way you do that are
- 2:51maybe living out their values the same way you do.
- 2:55And so it becomes challenging to have that self-trust and to continue that way
- 3:05when you're getting a lot of noise from.
- 3:08Every direction.
- 3:09I don't know a single person who's being self-employed who hasn't had people say
- 3:13to them, why don't you just go get a job?
- 3:17It happens all the time.
- 3:18Actually, one of the reasons I decided to pivot away from hybrid, remote and
- 3:23look at leadership more closely as this core of my business is one day
- 3:29my husband said to me, you could get a job and it would be work from home.
- 3:34And that's the only thing that matters to you.
- 3:36No.
- 3:37Honestly, that's not the only thing that matters to me.
- 3:40Having impact makes matters to me, having
- 3:46my words, my point of view, respected, and action.
- 3:54And working in a way where I'm actually.
- 3:57Helping people create a future of work that's going to set
- 4:02themselves up for success.
- 4:03Set the people that they work up with, success, their families
- 4:06and industries and society.
- 4:09If you are really looking whole picture, that's really what I'm looking at.
- 4:15The impact of what my work could be.
- 4:17That's what's important to me, how I do that.
- 4:23Will change.
- 4:24So yeah, a lot of times I work from home, but it's not that I'm
- 4:28opposed to working in person.
- 4:30I've always actually preferred some version of hybrid where you're
- 4:34meeting people in person because quite honestly, the skillset of people.
- 4:42At all different levels of business and whatever you actually do for work differs
- 4:50whether you can actually communicate effectively in person or remotely.
- 4:56That really is a challenge.
- 4:57And so a lot of times it's easier for me to meet in person with
- 5:02people that I know they're.
- 5:08Best method of communication is actually not remote, right?
- 5:13And that's an example of self-trust.
- 5:15Do I trust myself to understand the skillset that's involved both for me
- 5:23and the person that I'm working with, and whether that's actually going to be
- 5:31productive.
- 5:33In a remote setting or an in-person setting or somewhere in between, right?
- 5:37So that's a version of self-trust, but it's also how do you make an impact?
- 5:41How do you support your family?
- 5:43How do you do work that you feel is meaningful, that is fulfilling, that
- 5:48is again, setting you up for success, both from a professional point of view,
- 5:53but also from a personal point of view.
- 5:55How do you trust yourself?
- 5:57And a lot of times it comes down to what practices do you have in
- 6:00place to help yourself do that?
- 6:04So when the pandemic first started and I was feeling
- 6:07uncertain, I started meditating.
- 6:09And that was a gradual thing because quite honestly, I wasn't going anywhere anyway.
- 6:14And my coach happened to be certified in meditation, and so she was sharing
- 6:18a lot of her practices and it's why don't I try this and see what it is?
- 6:22And from my approach for it, a lot of it is really just noticing how do you
- 6:29notice what's going on in your body?
- 6:31How do you notice what's going on in your environment?
- 6:33What's going on in nature, in your neighborhood with your people.
- 6:38There are lots of different ways to actually notice, right?
- 6:42And a lot of it is internal.
- 6:45How are you feeling?
- 6:47Where do you feel fear?
- 6:48Where do you feel excitement?
- 6:50Where do you feel
- 6:52uncertainty?
- 6:53Where do you feel boredom?
- 6:55What happens when you're bored?
- 6:57What do you do?
- 6:58What never changes?
- 6:59What are you always interested in?
- 7:01What captures your attention?
- 7:03I am, historically, have always been.
- 7:07Anything that glitters draws my eye I love sparkles on water.
- 7:12I have a countertop that has sparkles on it.
- 7:16And little glimmers like that just make me happy.
- 7:19So the ankle of the sun, golden, things like that.
- 7:23The way sun bounces off snow, the sparkles on snow, reflections, all
- 7:29of that kind of stuff make me happy.
- 7:32And it's always been like that.
- 7:33When I walk into a library or a bookstore, I go to the mystery
- 7:38section, I go to the thriller section, I go to the romance section.
- 7:42Those are the areas that never really change in my life.
- 7:45This is what I enjoy.
- 7:48When I get up in the morning, I make coffee.
- 7:50These are my habits, these are my rituals.
- 7:53I take my dog for a walk.
- 7:57What are the habits, the rituals that fuel you, that keep you feeling
- 8:02grounded in your life, that help you feel that you trust yourself?
- 8:08And even when you have.
- 8:13A different event to go to.
- 8:14What do you keep going?
- 8:17So for example, when I travel, I know for a fact I can't really keep late hours.
- 8:24I know for a fact I need to have access to water because water is really good
- 8:28for me and I need to be able to swim.
- 8:30I. Drink tea on the road.
- 8:33I don't drink coffee.
- 8:35I really need to pay attention to eating healthy and, fruit and vegetables and
- 8:41not drinking alcohol, not doing things that are going to run me down and I
- 8:46need to make sure that I'm feeling
- 8:50safe and secure and supported.
- 8:55So how do I change those for the days where I'm not actually gonna be at home?
- 8:59And what does that look like?
- 9:02All of those things help me trust myself.
- 9:05And again, it can be extreme noticing as well too.
- 9:08During the summer, I like to float in my pool.
- 9:10I swim a lot.
- 9:11I run a lot.
- 9:12It's a small pool.
- 9:13It's just 18 foot round and it's, I run around in circle a lot, but
- 9:17sometimes I really just float.
- 9:18And I remember one day I was really just watching when daylight became twilight.
- 9:25And the change in the angle of the light and what changed and
- 9:32how it felt when you could feel the light creeping away and more
- 9:38dark and shadow was more apparent, and how that changed the water and
- 9:43how that changed how my body felt.
- 9:45A lot of it's really just extreme noticing, and so when you are.
- 9:52Aware of your own reactions, you're aware of your own body, you're aware of
- 9:56where things live in your body, what's normal, what's abnormal then you actually
- 10:00start to pay attention to how other people make you feel as well too, right?
- 10:06You can start to notice the stories that people tell themselves about
- 10:13their work, about what's important to them, what their curiosities are.
- 10:18What's true and what they wish would be true.
- 10:22And you start paying attention in a different way, right?
- 10:27And you can do this with people that you meet in person, but you can just
- 10:30do it with friends and neighbors that you don't necessarily see all the time.
- 10:34Family members, extended family, coworkers and then people that you
- 10:38actually don't know online, right?
- 10:40What are they showing you?
- 10:42But what are they?
- 10:43Careful never to show you, right?
- 10:46And this becomes this focus of attention.
- 10:50What are you noticing and what do you pay attention to on a regular basis?
- 10:55And what are your blind spots?
- 10:57And if you're starting to pay attention to all of that.
- 11:00You are really forming a point of view.
- 11:03You're forming a mindset.
- 11:05You are developing your worldview, and it helps you
- 11:13make decisions and move forward.
- 11:16When there's uncertainty, there's instability, there's an
- 11:21instability, and no one really has an understanding of what's going on.
- 11:29So you can look at
- 11:32what's changing, what's not changing, what has potential, what has possibilities,
- 11:36and how it makes you feel both intellectually, but also in your body too.
- 11:41And that connection between mind and body is really important.
- 11:45So we think when we're talking about trust.
- 11:48We really have to talk about self-trust.
- 11:51So again, how does that show up in your life?
- 11:54Yes, I meditate, I walk a lot.
- 11:57I swim a lot.
- 11:58I spend time with my family.
- 12:00I like reading.
- 12:03I like reading nonfiction books, but I also like reading fiction books.
- 12:08Romance books I generally love, but I do not like romantic and I
- 12:13actually don't like the way romance books are being written right now
- 12:16because there's a lot of tropes and there's a lot of rules surrounding
- 12:21what actually qualifies as romance.
- 12:23And so you start to look at something that you've always loved
- 12:28and what's changed about it and.
- 12:34Why that's triggering you and you start to understand
- 12:40what's fueling that.
- 12:41And that also feeds into other areas as well too.
- 12:46And you can.
- 12:48Move towards what you feel are the opportunities for you and what aren't the
- 12:53opportunities for you right at the moment.
- 12:56So what other habits do you have that are integral to
- 13:06how you show up in the world?
- 13:08And for me, it's walking in the forest.
- 13:11It's the swimming, like I said, the walking the extreme noticing
- 13:17really paying close attention
- 13:21and valuing my own opinion.
- 13:28And that can be hard for a lot of people.
- 13:30Some people do it through journaling.
- 13:32I know a couple of different authors that you know, their, they're really
- 13:38famous authors in their own fields.
- 13:42But their practices start with journals and they do deep research.
- 13:48But where their research really starts is with their own noticing.
- 13:54And that I think is fascinating to me because those are the people
- 14:00that I really value their insights because they're starting with
- 14:05themselves, not with what they notice in the rest of the world, right?
- 14:11So they're forming their own opinions and then.
- 14:16Sue me outwards from there, and that's my version of leadership
- 14:21and that's how I feel comfortable moving forward in a future where
- 14:28everything feels uncertain right now.
- 14:30I know my own reactions and so that's my throw out to you is.
- 14:37How do you trust yourself and what practices do you have in place to help
- 14:43yourself feel more certain of your choices, your opinions, what you value
- 14:53and how that's gonna set you up for the kind of future that you wanna have?
- 14:57Both, in work and personally, I think that's a valuable exercise too.
- 15:05Start with, and I'll put the the voicemail in the show notes.
- 15:09You can maybe call in and tell me your stories about how you actually
- 15:13trust yourself and what rituals and practices you create for yourself.
- 15:19That other people could maybe learn from, and that would be very helpful.
- 15:23And if I get, a few, I can share those in the next episode and we
- 15:27can talk about how to deepen those practices and how to extend it.
- 15:32And I,
- 15:37if we're trusting ourselves more, then does that help us
- 15:41trust other people as well?
- 15:45How do, what does that look like?
- 15:46What does that change?
- 15:47And that's a fascinating exercise to explore.
- 15:52Anyways, thanks for listening.
- 15:55Talk to
- 16:13Find yourself in.
- 16:17you next time.
