- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Well, good morning, men.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Uh good to see you all back for another semester of uh men's fraternity.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, as Jim said, uh, you know, they asked me to do this again, must not be able to get anybody else to uh to do this MC here.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: And I said, Chair, I was willing to to get up here again and uh greet everybody.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Um how many new men have we got that uh maybe have were not here say last semester, last couple semesters, but are kind of back uh either re-engaging or trying men's fraternity for the first time?
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Well, good.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Glad to see everybody here.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Um let's see, by way of announcements, yeah.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: I remembered the men's breakfast is coming Saturday and I think followed by uh kind of work session for the uh for the campus here.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: So if you can come out for a men's breakfast and then uh stay to help uh clean up the campus.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Uh new study this time.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: I guess some of you maybe got books, but I don't think we had quite enough books.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: But uh, you know, as I was kind of looking over ahead at uh the study uh this semester, and uh first thing I did was count to make sure I I knew the right number of uh uh of uh disciples.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: And yeah, sure enough, you know, 14.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: You know, if you remember uh 12, but then they had to add one to replace um Judas, and then of course Paul, so yeah, number was right.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: But I I was thinking, you know, we all study Moses and we study Abraham and we kind of know them, and I thought, gosh, if I get to heaven and I meet one of these guys, it's like, oh gee, man, I don't know your name and I don't know anything about you.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So I thought, oh, kind of good to have this study to kind of get to know these uh guys, especially some that maybe don't uh read much.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And I was as I was reading some of the foreword that Gene had written about what he went through as he read and prepared and uh and prayed and wrote about these guys, uh there were some some really interesting revelations to himself.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: So when you do get the book, I would encourage you to read the introduction because that's real good.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: In addition to the um uh kind of the tongue-in-cheek on the um uh consultants report as to whether or not these guys were were suitable for um for doing the job.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: There, there's a uh a little tongue-in-cheek on uh the consultants report.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So read that.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: That's uh that's kind of I'd actually read that in the past, but that's kind of interesting.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So um yeah, as Jim mentioned, I'm uh I'm actually uh looking for a job, and if I end up getting this one, uh not sure, may it may be able to uh continue with men's returning.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: I'm kind of hoping I can.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So uh anyway, but glad to be up here this morning.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Uh welcome you guys uh to another semester, and with that I'm gonna turn it over to these guys.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: So uh some introductory stuff.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Uh when you came in, you noticed that uh some of you, uh about half of you grabbed books, but only about half of the books came in.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: So copied off the first uh two weeks worth of stuff, which is the first chapter.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: And uh so there's some of those over here.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: There's uh suggested donation for the uh for the fall, for breakfast, and for the book.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Uh one time uh 10 bucks.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: It'll be audio recorded, though I've never met anybody who ever went online and listened to this.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, not sure.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: Have any of you guys ever done that?
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Gone online and listened?
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: My goodness.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: So special credit for you.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Um let me think.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, what else?
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, um, at the beginning of your book or at the beginning of the handout, you'll see uh an introduction, which is just four pages by Gene Getz, in which he uh has four headings diversity, this is pages one, two, three, and four, diversity, transformation, evaluation, and intercession, which is a nice little summary, uh, as Paul said, of what's happening.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: The reason I was excited about this study when um uh you know, Hunter and I had talked about a follow-up study or whatever, is uh, I mean, you see the thing, the apostles, I think that's really cool.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: These different apostles, and there's clearly different personalities involved here.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: And um, so I thought this this could really hit us right where we're at with different personalities in this room and who God uses.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: And transformation, yeah.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: So I think this is gonna be a great study this morning going through each of the apostles, and it was really interesting.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: We're in student ministry during our midweeks, we're going through first and second Peter, and Peter's our very first apostle who we are looking at immense fraternity too.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: And so last week we had our first midweek with the students.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: I said, Alright, who can tell me something about Peter?
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Kid raise their hand.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: They denied Jesus.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: Yes, he denied Jesus.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: How many times?
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Three times.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, they know that.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: What else do you guys know?
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: He cut off a guy's ear.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Yes, he did that too.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Anything else?
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Nothing.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: And so I said, so this guy denied Jesus three times, and you know that he cut off a guy's ear.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Does this guy sound like somebody who's qualified that we should be listening to him and listening to and learning about him and having two letters from him written in the New Testament?
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: And it was kind of a good segue to jump into, and I think kind of an interest grabber, and it kind of was for me too.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: And so I'm excited to go through this with us.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: We're gonna take two weeks on the first chapter, which is Peter.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: In fact, if you look at the uh uh uh at the book's uh table of contents, you'll see there's 14 chapters, and we're gonna take up both semesters, both fall and spring semesters with that, which means we're gonna we're gonna take two weeks for three chapters in the fall, and Peter's the first one, and then two of the other chapters, and because there's 10 weeks in the fall, 10 weeks in the spring.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: So this book will last you uh through next spring.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Sam, is there a little feedback in here?
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Is that because of the is that because of me?
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Or is that the speaker?
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Oh speak a little closer.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, maybe that's it.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: Thanks, Sam man.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: So we we're gonna be a little shorter, maybe, uh, this first session than next week, but let's uh just do what Hunter and I always did, which is to review the really important events of the week.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Did any of you watch that amazing comeback?
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: When they were, yeah, wasn't it amazing to be down, I think, 24 to 3 at one point or down 17 points in the fourth quarter?
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: What a what a comeback.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Um does anybody listen on the radio?
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Anybody ever listened to Mitch Holtis?
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: You know, he's a friend, you know, who used to, Greg, you know him so well from Greg's dad was the uh was the uh voice of the Wildcats before Mitch Holtis was.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: And that's and uh so anyway, talk about depressed in the first half.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Mitch was so depressed, he'd been so high on the Chiefs, and then all of that changed at the end.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: So um, and then um sorry to say it, but you know, we're all Royals fans because of the last two years, but uh, don't think we're gonna make the Super Bowl.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Um I don't think we're gonna make the playoffs even this year, much less the World Series.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: I I love that picture, Kane.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: So um, so this is the Apostles.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: So we've got uh we got like uh like like Paul said, 14 guys, all of them really different, all of them have different personalities.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: And so as we were talking, we thought, you know, let's talk a little bit about personality.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: Because the head of our head of staff, Doug Will, took us staff through our different personalities.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: When was that, Sam?
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: A month ago or something?
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, a little while back, and so we're we're noticing how huh?
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a long time ago.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: So we're noticing our different personalities, and I Sam and I were contrasting ours this morning.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: So I know it's too early to take that test, perhaps, that's on your on your sheet, but one of the fun things about this morning is we want you to sort of talk at your table after you introduce yourselves and find out what you do.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Talk about your personality type and where you fit in.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: So we'll we'll deal with that a little bit this morning.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: So, and by the way, just really quickly an overview.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: This is uh Smalley and Trent, who good guys who've been here at TBC.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, in their book on human typology, they point out the four different are you familiar with the whole lion, beaver, otter, golden retriever thing?
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Any of you familiar with that?
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: So the lion is sort of the representative of the leader, the dominant person, about 10% of society.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: They're competitive, they're boss type.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Uh on the right-hand side, the beaver, which is the acting, you know, the accountant, the CPA, the uh perfection type of a person.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Uh bottom left, the otter is the um super outgoing, you know, uh less Steinloggy type of person.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: High last.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Um animated, persuasive, very social.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Bottom right, golden retriever.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: This is the you know, phlegmatic, easygoing, you know, very peaceful, very stable uh type person, loyal, and so forth.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: So let's get into this thing and uh looking forward to crepes in about 20 minutes.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so if you guys um have looked into your book at all, this is the very beginning of the first chapter, and the first thing that Getz wants to point out to us, he titles it A Lesson in Humility.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: And so we got this guy, Peter.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: You know, he's tough, he's a fisherman, he's definitely, as we'll see, um I think more of the lion type of personality.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Um he wants to get his voice out there, he wants to be heard, he kind of naturally becomes the leader of the disciples.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: And as we were talking about a lesson in humility, the story that Gets points out is when they had been, him and a couple other disciples, were fishing all night the night before, weren't catching a single thing.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Just a horrible, horrible night of fishing.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: And they've been fishing all through the night, and they kind of pulled their boats up almost in a kind of a hopeless, kind of given up state.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: And Jesus comes along and says, Hey guys, let's go get into the boat.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: And they're like, We've been out there all night.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Are you serious?
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: Get back into the boat, like we're we're done.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: And he says, Come on, let's let's let's go into the boat and throw the nets over the side again.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Let's go out to this deep water, throw the nets over the side.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: And Peter, being the you know, brazen, tough, his idea is right, his way is right, is thinking, there's no way this is gonna work.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: This, I don't even want to go out here with this Jesus guy.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: And so they go, finally throw the nets over, and then all these fish flood into the net, pull them up into the boat, so much so that the boat starts to sink.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: And you just put yourself in Peter's position.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Talk about humility.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: After he's probably grumbling, oh, we're not gonna go out there, we're not catching anything, and this guy wants to come and tell us how to fish.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: We're the fishermen.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: We this is what we do.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: And then kind of gets showed up by Jesus, which, if that were me, I would be borderline embarrassed, a little bit humiliated, and kind of put in my place.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if you guys have ever had a point in your life where you had to have a serious lesson in humility handed to you.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: I've had well, one example I think of this week is I don't even remember what team it was, but whoever lost to KU in football, they gotta be humiliated.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Rhode Island.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: Rhode Island.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: It's like of all the teams that you could possibly lose to, you lose to KU.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: And so now KU's back on the football map, so keep it, keep a hunt out.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: We might even throw a slide up here once in a while for them.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Um but that would be humiliating.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Another time I can think of is when I was in high school and I played quarterback for my high school football team, and we're going into our very first playoff game.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: And in Indiana high school football, every team makes the playoffs.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: Even if you go 0-9 in the regular season, everybody's in the playoffs.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: So it's a little bit longer than it is here.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: But playing football, we go to play this team up north near Michigan, and this team's 0-9.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Hadn't won a game the whole year.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: This team called Northridge.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: And so in my mind, it's like, we're 7-3, we're gonna go up here, we're gonna blow these guys out, we're gonna get some good pizza on the way home, and it's just it's gonna be great.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: So we go up there, and we get we didn't get smashed, but we lost by a touchdown.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: So we're this 7-3 team, I'm the quarterback of this team, and we go up here and lose to these guys who are 0-9, hadn't won a single game.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: And talk about being being humiliated.
- 13:26unknown: Okay.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Getting our serious lesson in humility, like, oh man, maybe we should have taken these guys more seriously or thought about that more.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: And so as we think about that in terms of Christ, in terms of our relationship with him, not that he necessarily, you know, is out to humiliate all of us or intimidate all of us or anything, but there are times when we realize that, oh, God, you're right.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: God, you are right about this.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: What you say in your word is right.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: What you say is true.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Maybe I should listen to you and not just my own ideas or have my own thoughts about how something should go.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: And so, as we kind of go into our small group questions a little bit later, that may be one of the topics that we want to talk about is maybe a time when we were kind of put in our place, so to speak, when we realized that God was right and we were not about a certain situation.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: And just how that can help us rely on him and even trust him even more that he is true and that his word is true, and everything he says is right.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Let me ask you a question, because one of the things that I've never figured out in this story, Derek, completely is how come, so so if if if if I'd been Peter, or if I'd been somebody and I'm in the boat, and Jesus says, Go out and cast, and we get all these fish in, I can see myself, you know, like with uh like like with the royals making a comeback, you know, in the ninth inning last year or something, screaming, jumping up and down, but instead Peter uh falls at Jesus' knees.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: This becomes a lesson in humility instead of excitement.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: And he says, Go away from me because I'm a sinful man.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: And you know, in what is the psychology there that would cause you to somehow go?
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, was it became because maybe earlier he had resisted and said, Don't tell me to go, I'm a fisherman, don't tell me to go out in deep water, or you know, what's going on there?
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: How come how come it's a moment of humility?
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: I think that may have been been a huge part of it in that when he saw Jesus come up, he's probably thinking, you know, this guy can't tell me what to do.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: I I know how to fish.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: This is my job.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: I'm an expert at this.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: And then they catch this literally a boatload of fish.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: And so I think at the end, Peter falling on his knees is a one, a realization of his position and God's position, but I think even more so realizing that okay, there there might be something to this guy, this Jesus guy.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: He might be somebody worth following.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: He might be somebody worth trusting because he knows what he's talking about, and he just did this miraculous thing that I couldn't do on my own.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: He really, really helped us out in this situation.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: So uh the question that I've sort of altered the question slightly.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: You see it on this the sheet is for those of you that have a book.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, uh I think I've attached it to all of the uh photocopied sheets at the end.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: The question here is were you ever under such conviction of sin that you literally fell on your knees before God?
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: So now we move to the second, though, of the of the three sections.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: This is called Peter, a new name, and it's on page, what page is this on?
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Seven.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: Seven.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Bottom of page seven.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: So this is uh this is this story about Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: John chapter one was one of two who heard what John had said, who followed Jesus.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: First thing Andrew did was to find Simon and tell him we found the Messiah, and he brings him to Jesus.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: So this is how Peter sort of comes to Christ for the first time.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Um what happens is that uh Peter, a fisherman, has gone down from Galilee a couple three days' trip to Jerusalem where his brother Andrew is.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: And Andrew runs into his brother.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: And says, We found the Messiah.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: And this is, I think, about the only way that you get a really dominant guy to buy into something.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Dominant people, you know, you can't talk them into anything.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: You can't sell them things door to door.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: You can't, I mean, they they sell you stuff, right?
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: They run your life.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: So, but his brother comes to him and says, This guy's the real McCoy.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: So then Simon goes to Jesus, and Jesus says, I'm gonna give you a new name.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Your name is Rock.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: You know, your name is Petra, your name is Peter from now on.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: So this is the story of how Peter meets Jesus.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: So for me, Derek, this is the explanation of why a few months later, uh when Peter's up north and he and he's in his fishing boat and Jesus is walking by the shore, Jesus says, Come and follow me.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: It makes no sense to me that that Mr.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Dominant would leave his fishing and follow Jesus unless he'd known him beforehand.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Because, like I said, I'm I have this picture in my head.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: I have this, I hang around some dominant people.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: I'm not a high D, I'm not a lion.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: But I've got this friend in the church, he's the most dominant guy, maybe I've ever met.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: He's always telling me what to do.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: And um telling me how it's not you, telling me how I should have preached the message or what I should do or whatever.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: And I can't imagine ever Jesus or anybody else walking up to him and saying, Leave your job and follow me, and him doing it.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: He'd have said, No, you follow me.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: And um, but the way the explanation for me is that Peter had met Jesus before through his brother and gotten this new name.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: So that's all I want to say about this.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: And um and the question we ask here is, what did you think the first time you heard about Jesus?
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: So as you go around your group later, this may be a good question for you to answer.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Now, for some of you who, like me, grew up hearing about Jesus at age two, this may not be a great question.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, but some of you, you know, like you, Les, you know, you met Christ at age 40 or whatever.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: This is kind of interesting.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: So take us to the third and last section.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: And so this last section, a brilliant strategy, is it's really neat.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if you guys have ever been part of kind of a startup team or a startup group or a men's group or any type, any type of new group that was starting up.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: But if you guys have, you guys probably realize the importance of okay, we've got this group together.
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: Who's kind of the general leader?
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Who's the person who we're gonna look to to kind of cause some of the shots within this group?
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: And what we see very, very quickly is that Jesus starts assembling his disciples.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: He's assembling his team of leaders.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: And Peter very quickly rises to the top.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: As we read through the Gospels, his voice is heard the most.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Um, he's one of the people who stands out.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: He's very vocal, kind of boisterous, kind of that dominant lion leader type.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: And this is something that Jesus obviously knew was going to happen.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: And like Jim said, changed his name to Rock, Petros, and as we think of him, you know, denying Jesus three times, it's this this is this guy the rock?
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Is this guy who kind of Jesus says that the church is gonna be built on?
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: This guy who for a while doesn't even want to acknowledge Christ in public, but nonetheless, Jesus knows that the church is eventually going to be built on him.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: He's not the cornerstone, Christ is the cornerstone, but he's a pretty big stone in there.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: And as we see, you guys have your uh your leadership sheets that are that are on your tables, and it has you know the lion, the otter, uh, beaver, golden retriever.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Like we said, the lion is really Peter.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: And everybody's kind of a mix of of these in some kind of way, but as we see so far, really he's that lion type.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: And it's really brilliant because it If you don't have that one lion type person, that one kind of leader type person, it's really tough to get things done in your group.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: And I've I've been on different teams like that where it's like, no, you you make the decision.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: No, you make the decision.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: No, you make the decision.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: No, I don't want to make the decision.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: But we've got to have that leader type person, and that's who Peter was.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: As many mistakes as he's made, he's also, as we you know, read through Acts and find out a little bit later, did a ton of great things for supporting Christ, supporting the mission that that they were on, and really leading this group of 12, which is something that's really neat and just the importance of having at least one of those lion type personalities in your group.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: And as you you guys don't have to fill this this survey out today, but uh maybe after you go home later today, take you know five minutes and fill that thing out, and maybe just talk about um where you guys are at.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: On the back of there, there's a little brief description of each of the four different types.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: And we can we can use that as kind of some talking points.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh in a group, in a group of 30 like this, there'll be three lions, that's all.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: It's pretty rare.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: And uh the beaver, the uh accurate one, the uh analytical one, and so forth, there'll be like seven, seven or eight.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: There'll be seven or eight otters.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: That's the really outgoing person.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: And the stable, the golden retrievers, the the the uh you know uh the loyal people and so forth.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: That'd be about ten people.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: And uh Jim, who would you out of out of these four, which which do you fall under?
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Well, uh uh we're told by psychologists that you have a major one and you have a backup, and I'm definitely uh beaver, uh always analytical and so forth.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: And uh um so for instance, uh uh and my backup, by the way, is um is the lion.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: That's but that that's my backup.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: So I always felt really weird when I was asked to be the lead pastor of this church, not feeling like a natural leader.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: But uh I was comforted reading a book about CEOs, Fortune uh Fortune 500 company CEOs, 80% of them are not lions.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: 80% of them feel as though they are not the best leader for their Fortune 500 company.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: But and Jack, you deal a lot with companies and so forth.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: God just simply puts you in places where you you're not natural and asks you to step out of your comfort zone and learn how to be a leader, even though perhaps you're not a lion.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Uh I like I like this uh poster because you have far left a cleric that is a lion, or on the disc test, a D, you can see the D on her face, would say, Well, you better believe I'm a cleric.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: You know, they're they're really strong.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: A sanguine, that would be the outgoing otter, the popular person would say, Yeah, that's me.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: I love being an otter.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: The melancholic, that's uh my number one, that's the more analytical type.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: I've analyzed the data, and I am a melancholic.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Perfect viewer.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: The phlegmatic, which isn't that you?
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: A little bit.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: You, Sam?
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: So that would be, well, I suppose I could be a phlegmatic, peaceful golden retriever.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: Now, here's what's interesting is I decided to include some slides that show the negatives because sometimes that helps you identify who you are.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: The weaknesses of a lion, and you can guess, they tend to, if they're not careful, they run people over.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: The weakness of the otter, who's the fun, sanguine, outgoing person, they interrupt people often and they're moody and they're disorganized and they miss details of directions.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: The beaver, the analytical type, weaknesses is they can be too analytical.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Anybody, if you're married to a beaver, you know this is true.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Uh they're inflexible and they tend to be critical.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: I uh my first year of marriage was troublesome because I always was analyzing my wife, whether it was the food or criticism, or we'd sit by each other on the couch and she's very sanguine, otter, and she'd be crying, and I'd be going, be logical, be logical.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Golden retriever, the weaknesses uh of a golden retriever, the phlegmatic, is that they can be lazy and indecisive.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: So we move to the, as we close here, we move.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: There are three principles at the end of the chapter.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: And the first principle applies to today's discussion, uh, Derek, and that's simply no matter what your previous experience, Jesus Christ can use you to serve him.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Uh let's say our verse together.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: It's at the end of the chapter, Philippians 3, 13 and 14, or it's on the screen.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Uh let's start with the word forgetting, right there on the screen with Hussein Bolt.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: It's a great verse to know.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, in small group discussion time, and I guess we'll know when the food's ready.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: By the way, the food will usually be ready when you first come.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: I know that's what we all look forward to, but uh it uh got delayed this morning.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: So uh make sure you go around the table, especially if there are new guys there, and introduce yourself, find out what each other does, then answer the questions on pages 25 through 27.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, find out if there's a lion in your group who will tell you which questions you need to answer, because you certainly can't answer all of them.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: And then at the end, pray for each other.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: And this coming week, I've written down here, go ahead and finish reading chapter one.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: This can be a good devotional book for you.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: And uh see you at men's breakfast this Saturday, 7:30.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Have we covered it all?
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: I think that's it.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Let me pray for us.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Heavenly Father, thanks for your goodness.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: Thank you for getting us up this early and um allowing us to be here.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: Help us to study Peter and see what things um you want us to apply to our lives.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: Thank you for the food.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: Thank you for everybody who's preparing it, and ask that you bless that to our bodies in Jesus' name.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: Amen.
