- 0:02Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06movie talk show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:08shelf, presents it to the other, and discusses it at length.
- 0:19This week we've got coming up with Dave's Shelf, 2015's
- 0:23Everest starring Jason Clark, Jake Gyllenhaal, directed by
- 0:28Baltasar Kormakur, and written by William Nicholson and Simon
- 0:33Boy Foy. Very good Phillip very good
- 0:36David welcome back to the couch Very good, Phillip, Very good,
- 0:36David, welcome back to the couch.
- 0:38Thank you. Thanks for being here, of
- 0:39course. Pleasure is mostly mine.
- 0:41How are you doing this week and wait for?
- 0:45It. Why this movie and why now?
- 0:48I don't know what Punxsutawney Phil said about spring, so I
- 0:52don't know if you got six more weeks of winter.
- 0:54He did see a. Shot of did he cause another
- 0:56version? Didn't So who do you believe
- 0:59the. OG the prognosticator of
- 1:01prognosticators. That's who you believe.
- 1:03You said that in that episode of Groundhog Day, Yeah, and I
- 1:06pretend like I knew what you meant.
- 1:07I don't know what a prognosticator is.
- 1:10It's a predictive. It's like a guy, the prognosis.
- 1:14Prognosis negative. Predictor of predictors.
- 1:18That's right. I'm down for me, buddy.
- 1:20OK, what was I saying? Yeah.
- 1:23So I wanted to, before we got to the thaw, sneak in one more cold
- 1:28one. Nice.
- 1:29Not beer wise. Just movie wise, sure.
- 1:32Before it possibly warms up, and I do want to preface this
- 1:37because I now have a license to preface.
- 1:39I graduated with honors. I did not know this was based on
- 1:44a true story. Interesting.
- 1:47Yeah, that's your wheelhouse. That's her.
- 1:48It can be. It can be.
- 1:50It does change things. In certain aspects, as we'll
- 1:52touch on throughout the film. OK, of all the movies to choose
- 1:56from, why this one of the I needed a cold one, why was it
- 1:59this one? If you geez, I don't know if I.
- 2:01Just have prepared for. That sometimes I go on the
- 2:03Internet and say give me a spring movie, give me a fall
- 2:05movie. I don't know if I did that.
- 2:07I don't remember where it popped up.
- 2:09I didn't see a preview of it of anything.
- 2:10I've never heard of it. You didn't go to your.
- 2:12Shelf and pull it off. No, I didn't.
- 2:15No, it's been revealed that not all of these movies are on our
- 2:19fair Full disclosure. There's no space.
- 2:22No space. Let's be honest.
- 2:23That's right, you gotta go under and down under to get.
- 2:25If we did movies that were just on our shelves, we're doing a
- 2:28Bruce Willis every 3rd week. We don't want that.
- 2:31No, that's not good for anyone. I'm less happy than me in that
- 2:37instance. And your happiness matters to
- 2:38me. I appreciate.
- 2:39That a lot, no, I wouldn't expect.
- 2:41That but some. I'll take it.
- 2:44Now give me your history, please.
- 2:45What's this movie? My history goes back to when you
- 2:48said this is the movie we're gonna watch this week.
- 2:50I figured as much. I don't want to say I never
- 2:51heard of it. I may have at some point.
- 2:53Certainly heard of the mountain. That's good, but certainly not
- 2:57something that I would have sought in 2015 and not sought
- 3:02since. So having you pick it was, I
- 3:07kind of rolled my eyes, I gotta be honest, when it was revealed
- 3:10to me that this was the movie of choice this week.
- 3:12I imagine that happens but 70% of the time, certainly.
- 3:15But some of the stuff you suggest I know I'm like, oh.
- 3:18Yeah, you've pre rolled the eyes.
- 3:19I've pre. Rolled, you're like, yeah, this
- 3:21is Dave. Sure.
- 3:22And I know this movie and I don't want to know.
- 3:26It's movie kind of snack, whereas this one I didn't really
- 3:30remember anything at all about it.
- 3:32No trailer, no trailer. I may have seen it.
- 3:36I mean, I was out of the video store by then.
- 3:37So like again, my intake was less so your access limited
- 3:42limited. Exactly.
- 3:43So I just was sort of anticipating shit.
- 3:48That's, you know, that's, that's just the go too.
- 3:50Far. Because I didn't really know
- 3:52anything about it. I thought like oh this is like
- 3:54low budget action or something. I did look up the IMDb score
- 3:57first. OK, so so you do a.
- 3:58Little I did a little bit. I wasn't give you a 4.0, OK, I
- 4:01was gonna give you something above A7.
- 4:03I appreciate I've done. That alright, I didn't know what
- 4:06to expect as the short version of this and I have to tell you,
- 4:09I was so happy. Wonderful.
- 4:13And so much so that, I mean, this doesn't really ever happen,
- 4:15but it goes back to your true story thing.
- 4:18And we'll get to your take on the true story because you
- 4:20alluded to it earlier, Rush. But on my end, what the best
- 4:24things of a true story? I've told you before, I don't
- 4:26care. Meaning factual.
- 4:28It doesn't make any difference to me if it's a true story or
- 4:31it's a fiction or if they've amalgamated characters or they
- 4:33embellish certain things or whatever the case.
- 4:36But I will say that the best things about movies based on a
- 4:39true story is the good ones, or at least the ones that connect,
- 4:43open up the world to find out what the real story is.
- 4:48And this movie without a doubt did that.
- 4:52Since watching this movie a couple times for the podcast I
- 4:55went and got, I watched the Everest IMAX documentary The 45
- 5:00minute IMAX shot that was concurrent with this accident.
- 5:03Got you. And watched into thin air.
- 5:06Yeah, the TV movie with Christopher.
- 5:08McDonald's good actors in it. Totally, absolutely.
- 5:11Richard Jenkins is back. I read up as much of the
- 5:14Wikipedia that I could find, like.
- 5:16Make you look bad here. I went in, yeah, you did on this
- 5:19and you came out, I think it tells me.
- 5:23Came out a better. Man, that the things it did in
- 5:25the movie really delivered. I didn't do all of that, of
- 5:28course. Not how I did some, however I
- 5:32did get a sense of it. OK.
- 5:35I want that to be on record. Ohta sense of it, Dave.
- 5:38Got a sense, got a sense. There it is.
- 5:40And what I really found interesting, and we'll get into
- 5:42this maybe a little later, but what I found interesting was
- 5:44that the elements of this movie that I would have pre rolled my
- 5:48eyes or thought. Yeah.
- 5:53Good luck finding. That manipulated or whatever the
- 5:56idea that he says if it was just a movie, I would say yeah, of
- 6:01course the kids gonna be born in six weeks, right.
- 6:04Like of course you're gonna add that element to add some drama.
- 6:06Yeah and then it's like every record of this account from 4
- 6:10books to 3 movies all has that is reality yeah.
- 6:14There's no way. All the stuff that happens with
- 6:16Becky like that's such a come on.
- 6:18And then you're like yeah oh wow.
- 6:19Almost like beat for beat it. So that part of it I I find
- 6:25amazing, impressive and impressive that that the things
- 6:28that in Magnolia, a movie that you know, I love 3 hour says so
- 6:33that's right. Check the archives.
- 6:35But that there's a line in that movie right if I'd seen that in
- 6:38a movie I wouldn't have believed it and this is that and yet
- 6:42doing some research afterwards I was like oh shit the things I
- 6:44would have thought were made-up or fictionalized are not this
- 6:48feels pretty real it felt like they stuck to a certain set of
- 6:51rules they made for themselves to how to tell the story And
- 6:54this was successful in doing that.
- 6:56I don't necessarily love, love, love the movie, but I like what
- 7:00they did with it. At least you got a sense.
- 7:02Yeah, I got a very good sense, lots of sense.
- 7:05I'm rich, rich with sense. And I want to give everybody the
- 7:09general feeling about what this movie is about.
- 7:11We're going to Old Faithful. We're going old faithful, if not
- 7:14now, now. On May 10th, 1996, mountain
- 7:18guides Rob Hall and Scott Fischer combined their
- 7:21expedition teams for a final ascent to the summit of Mount
- 7:24Everest. With little warning, a storm
- 7:27strikes the mountain and the climbers must now battle to
- 7:29survive. That's what happens.
- 7:32But that's too long. It's too long.
- 7:34You were worried about me saying it was like I was going to get
- 7:36through it and it didn't because I forgot to hit the more button
- 7:38so I had to start over. But you'll never know that there
- 7:40is a more. Button I think.
- 7:42Couple mores and you're the one that was like one letter.
- 7:46We do what we doing here. Change the font size for God's
- 7:50sakes. Make an exception, but there it
- 7:52is. Happened but it is a little less
- 7:54than exciting right I mean I don't put a lot of stock and
- 7:57I'll do it more so everybody we're all on the same page we
- 7:59all know what we're dealing with here yes no surprises other than
- 8:02maybe a few things that you say that might catch me off guard
- 8:06you liking my movie Happened, but it is a little less than
- 7:55exciting, right? I mean, I don't put a lot of
- 7:56stock and I'll do it more. So everybody, we're all on the
- 7:58same page. We all know what we're dealing
- 8:00with here. Yes, No surprises other than
- 8:02maybe a few things that you say that might catch me off guard.
- 8:06You liking my movie? That's I'm already thrown off
- 8:08you've had a couple already this year or they laid into last year
- 8:11where you you really upped your game I've waited 5 long years
- 8:15for to give me movies that I want to watch You know what's
- 8:16really irritating is that you've had bigger bangers like
- 8:21Groundhog Day and American President.
- 8:22So even when I I finally hit the hit the what do you call the hot
- 8:26iron? Yeah, sure, whatever that
- 8:28saying. Iron strike while the iron is
- 8:29hot. That's what I'm doing.
- 8:30Yeah, I guess. And then you.
- 8:32Have come up with some of those yourself, so it's a team effort,
- 8:36Yeah, the listeners are really the winners.
- 8:38Here, team effort irritating. You pick OK now as the movie
- 8:42begins, I probably would have thought the production company
- 8:46was called Skipping Stone and Railroad Productions.
- 8:51Yeah, sure. Those.
- 8:53Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm in Walden Media.
- 8:55Do you know the last Walden Media movie we watched?
- 8:57No, it's a kind of a faith-based Jesus son.
- 9:01No, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium.
- 9:03OK, there we go. Yeah, we get a little bit of
- 9:05numbers on the strip dates. We get some dates, some some
- 9:09text, which we love so much. 1953 as when people kind of
- 9:14started doing this thing. Was when it was submitted for
- 9:17the first time. Submitted for the first time and
- 9:20one in four died. Yeah, on average, yes. 25%.
- 9:24Yep. 1992 became commercial. Yep.
- 9:28And then no fatalities. That's good for the insurance
- 9:31companies. Yes, they like.
- 9:32That then obviously 96 takes us to this movie.
- 9:35Yeah, brings us to date, 20 teams on the Hill.
- 9:38It's become pretty. Congested.
- 9:40A little congested, they got two weeks to make it happen.
- 9:43How did you feel about giving us a quick shot of, I would say
- 9:48over halfway through the movie for about two minutes, making a
- 9:52bit of a climb, and then we rewind and go right back to one
- 9:56of your favorite places to be, the airport?
- 10:00I think it's important to establish what they're getting
- 10:06into. I don't know that it's fully
- 10:08effective in this moment. I would have been just fine.
- 10:10I don't need a six weeks earlier title card.
- 10:12They didn't even bother with the title card, so I think they know
- 10:14that, yeah, we're just gonna throw it in there.
- 10:17Well, I mean, it says six weeks earlier when they get back to
- 10:19the airport. Oht did they?
- 10:20Yeah. OK.
- 10:22Are you sure? 100%.
- 10:23Maybe not my copy Amazon. But it is there, yeah, six weeks
- 10:27earlier, so I don't need the time cut.
- 10:29To me, it just felt. But it doesn't hurt.
- 10:31Like it's it's so short and fairly insignificant, which begs
- 10:34the question, why bother? But I like certainly the idea of
- 10:39opening the movie, establishing who and what we're about to deal
- 10:44with. So having Rob be there, his wife
- 10:47Jan, Helen, the base camp manager, Emily Watson.
- 10:51I don't know if you've ever known this, but love her.
- 10:54OK, she's Helen. Helen.
- 10:55OK, watching her and punch drunk.
- 10:57Love watching her Hillary and Jackie.
- 10:59She was in the boxer just like I, breaking the waves.
- 11:03It's like she's got, I love ability to act.
- 11:05British lady, yeah. Pop up again haven't seen her in
- 11:10a while good but I was like God I'm in I like her a lot Did you
- 11:13realize that we were in New Zealand at this point?
- 11:15I didn't specifically know that, but all the accents tell me so.
- 11:18Yeah. It I didn't even know it.
- 11:21This is, I promise you, no idea. I said we were done with
- 11:25Crocodile with anything to do with my trips.
- 11:28Did I tell you I went to the New Zealand, Australia?
- 11:31But we're in Christchurch, New Zealand, and one of the
- 11:35characters which at one point I thought was Mike, at one point I
- 11:38thought was Andy, and one point I thought was Harold.
- 11:40There's two of those three things.
- 11:42He's also in Virgin River. You know who I'm talking.
- 11:44Of course how? Yeah, and he is from Auckland.
- 11:46In real life I go. So I was in his backyard.
- 11:49Fantastic. Literally.
- 11:51I saw the mailbox. It was lovely, man.
- 11:54I forgot his real name. He's nice to see though.
- 11:58Keira Knightley. Still cute as a button.
- 12:00Sure. Yeah, even in 2015 she was.
- 12:02Ten years later, 10 years later. Didn't age day she looked great.
- 12:05Yeah, I'm not a fan. So as you know, I didn't really
- 12:08care for her and Love Actually, I've never really liked her most
- 12:11any other movie. She's fine here, but.
- 12:13Well, it's funny because the wife role, yeah, the two of the
- 12:16female leads, sorry, not leads, are played by leading ladies.
- 12:20Sure. Yeah.
- 12:21Yeah. Not right.
- 12:22Like the actress that was in. Robin Wright Penn.
- 12:25Robin Wright Penn. She must been married to Sean at
- 12:27once. It was for a bit.
- 12:28Yeah, I guess she's just Robin right now.
- 12:29I think she dropped the pen finally.
- 12:30Yes, I dropped pens all the. Time they get ink on my pants.
- 12:35So what? The Pepsi the other day really
- 12:36irritated me. Ohe yeah.
- 12:38But it could be worse. These are the real problems in
- 12:39life, you know, But at the beginning we're kind of
- 12:43establishing a little bit of who's who, the players, if you
- 12:46will. Real people, all of them.
- 12:49Brolin. Yeah, it's nice to see Josh.
- 12:51We haven't done much with Josh. Just turned out to be a great
- 12:55actor, you know? Goonies is so good in that.
- 12:58Yeah, he's like 1718 or yeah, pretty young.
- 13:01Yeah, something like this. He does good stuff.
- 13:03He does some shit, too. He had like a long stretch of
- 13:05movie where I'm like where movies where I was sort of like,
- 13:07Oh yeah, this guy back in my mind doesn't matter.
- 13:09And then all of a sudden somehow came out of the 90s, if you
- 13:12will, and has just been killing it since.
- 13:14One of my kind of favorite. I don't see every movie he's in,
- 13:18but I love him anytime I do see him.
- 13:20I did not love American gangster.
- 13:22I don't think you. Know, but he was.
- 13:23Fond of it, but he was. Totally good in that.
- 13:25He was good in the Dune movies. He was even good in something
- 13:27like Labour Day. He was great.
- 13:29And W, he was just a He's always good.
- 13:31He's just good. He's great.
- 13:33He's great. And also, of course, would like
- 13:35to mention Jason Clark, who is effectively the lead playing Rob
- 13:38Hall. Rob Hall.
- 13:40This role was originally designed for Christian Bale.
- 13:44OK, but he failed. I don't know.
- 13:48Might have been doing something else, obviously.
- 13:50Maybe a Batman was 2015, I don't know.
- 13:53Could be 2013 actually when they started the filming, but none of
- 13:55my business. I don't know much about Clark
- 13:58other than I did notice him in one of the Planet of the Apes
- 14:01movies, one of the later ones. It wasn't Dawn.
- 14:05I don't know which ones. If it's not Mark Wahlberg, I
- 14:07don't know. He's great in that.
- 14:09I mean, that's just generally. I really love that movie.
- 14:11He was in the recent House of Dynamite movie, Terminator
- 14:14Generator. That's right.
- 14:15I have that on my shelf. And certainly, you know, most
- 14:18notably, not so much for performance, but for the film
- 14:21itself. It wasn't the Best Picture
- 14:23winner a few years back of Oppenheimer, OHS heard about
- 14:25working with your boy Chris Nolan.
- 14:27Good choice, love to work. With I know you're not a Chris
- 14:29Nolan fan, but I don't. Think I'll bring any of his
- 14:31movies off anytime soon now? Josh Brolin comes in pretty hot.
- 14:44It's 100% Texan and, you know, kind of has its own baggage, if
- 14:48you will. But he likes teasing old Doug.
- 14:51He's got a little hard on for Doug.
- 14:53Yeah, that's true. He does.
- 14:54He's them a little bit fun way. Mailman on Everest, ha ha ha.
- 14:58He wants to see it though. Yes, he.
- 14:59Loved and I respect that, but it's played by a guy named John
- 15:02Hawkes and he's a face you might recognize from here and there.
- 15:06Maybe you wouldn't, but you know he did an episode of Monk
- 15:08William and you probably. I started watching that, by the
- 15:10way. Oh, there, yeah.
- 15:11So you'll you'll run into him somewhere down the line.
- 15:13Good to know. But the movie that sticks out
- 15:15for me, I loved him in was Me and You and Everyone We Know,
- 15:18which is a Canadian film from 2005 that I ended up seeing at
- 15:21the Vancouver Festival. And he's fantastic in it.
- 15:25Like really really good. I see the potential.
- 15:27In Miami Vice, in American Gangster, which we were just
- 15:29chatting about, not like huge roles.
- 15:32He's just an actor that if you see him, he stands out.
- 15:35He's got a pretty interesting. Face solid third line right
- 15:37winger. That's right, playing the
- 15:39two-way game. And Michael Kelly playing Jon
- 15:41Krakauer, the the writer. I like him.
- 15:43So yeah, House of Cards. I know.
- 15:46That's all good now. He isn't, he is good in that.
- 15:48I just I don't like him and everything.
- 15:50Yeah, that's fine. But that's OK.
- 15:51That's my problem. That's.
- 15:52Right, I'll work through. It so I like the casting even
- 15:54though I don't really know who the characters are, right?
- 15:58Like I don't real people who the real people are or whatever
- 16:00else. In terms of faces, I thought the
- 16:02movie was well cast in that. Way you have enough.
- 16:06Yeah, we can carry this to the top.
- 16:08Yeah. And if you're doing that, I
- 16:10suppose you need a Tylenol. Oh.
- 16:12Yes, either Maggie or Jake. I'm not saying which, but I
- 16:15think if you're gonna carry that weight, you need a guy who
- 16:17knows. The cold I I love him in this, I
- 16:20really do sure I'm gonna come out and say Scott Fisher yes.
- 16:23I just get a feeling that's OK, you're playing Scott Fisher.
- 16:25Like, I don't know Scott Fisher obviously, but just like I know
- 16:29the type of role he's doing and I think he does a.
- 16:32Little Brash. She's got a vibe about him.
- 16:34He's kind of laughing and teasing.
- 16:35He doesn't really take much seriously.
- 16:37It feels kind of browy. Yeah, little bit Broly no shirt
- 16:40and it's kind of chilly out. I think he's great in this movie
- 16:44and because I don't know this story or anything about it going
- 16:47in beyond just its Everest, I had no preconceptions or notions
- 16:53as to what would happen. I did have anticipate this is a
- 16:57tragedy if you will, assuming why else would you make this
- 17:01movie? Or movie something happened. 25
- 17:03people went up the hill and 25 people came down.
- 17:05Thanks for watching, if that's what other movies are for.
- 17:08So I knew there was going to be something happening.
- 17:10And because I don't know anything about this story, it's
- 17:12helpful to tell me the rules. Tell me your situation, and I'll
- 17:15get on board. And I thought they did a really
- 17:17good job of that during this sort of meet and greet, sharing
- 17:20a couple of drinks. In the bar, the big speech.
- 17:23That was big as you know Michael Douglas or That was big, as you
- 17:24know, Michael Douglas or. Kevin Kline definitely not at
- 17:28the same. Yeah, we get the sense that many
- 17:31of them have, like you said, knocking up the McKinley, like
- 17:34some have tried drugs. This is his third time.
- 17:36So you get a sense that it's trying to conquer the
- 17:40unconquerable Yasuko talking about the she's done 6 of the 7
- 17:45summits. So like you kind of get a sense
- 17:46these are a mixture of real amateur people, like who can't
- 17:50get up to McKinley, like Beck, right.
- 17:53And then other people that have tried before and then others
- 17:55that are this is just the last or the next thing in their To Do
- 17:59List. So I like variety.
- 18:00Yeah, I like the mixture. Makes it interesting.
- 18:02And because of all the faces, you just don't know what's gonna
- 18:04happen to any of them. Because if it was a really big
- 18:07star, like if Tom Cruise was in this.
- 18:09Yeah, he'll, yeah, he's going to make.
- 18:10It kind of assume or it would go the other way and I'll tell you
- 18:13something later. They fooled me in this in this
- 18:17OHT good. There's two instances in this
- 18:18movie where I was like. I'd like you to be fooled, but.
- 18:21Ohe yeah, here we go. And I was caught off guard.
- 18:25Good. So.
- 18:25Like to keep you on your toes? Because, well, you did nothing
- 18:27to do. With no, but it's just I'm just
- 18:29happy you have all your toes. Actually, I assume so.
- 18:32If not, maybe an extra 1? That's right.
- 18:33Yeah. What I do not love, just to get
- 18:36into something without being too gushy, is they talk about Doug's
- 18:40discount and, and how there's a quiet moment with him and yeah,
- 18:44and Rob is sort of like, that's OK, don't worry about it, OK.
- 18:47And then later it's give Beck the phone call, $25 a minute.
- 18:51Don't worry, it's on. Us.
- 18:53I like that and Rob seems like a nice guy.
- 18:55Well, I think this is something I want to talk about later.
- 18:57I'm going to put a pin, if you will, but these choices and
- 19:01these decisions in these moments, I think are designed to
- 19:04do something that I don't think the movie is correct in doing.
- 19:09OK, no, that's fine. We'll circle back, we'll go up
- 19:12and we'll come back down. Imagine doing all of that
- 19:15hungover. I could barely do anything when
- 19:18I'm hungover, let alone trying to attract.
- 19:20Yeah, that's the thought that popped into my head.
- 19:22And my other thought, of course, I don't know if you would have
- 19:25guessed that I had this idea in my head.
- 19:27When you have a lot of people in the movie, a lot of different
- 19:30climbers, not a lot of big names, but a couple, do they
- 19:34feel like climbers or are they just extras?
- 19:37Ohe. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:39I was a little watching. Yeah.
- 19:40I was a little worried at the beginning, like.
- 19:42Too many people you. Can't.
- 19:44Are you gonna feel like you should be here now?
- 19:47Nobody really should be there in some sense.
- 19:49But anyways, I did not get that. I felt everybody wanting to be
- 19:53there for the reason that they stated.
- 19:56Yeah, I believe that. Yeah, for sure.
- 19:57I think everything was really authentic.
- 19:59It felt very, very truthful in the casting and the way it's
- 20:02presented for sure. Good job, casting director.
- 20:05What I really Found interesting right away is once we're on the
- 20:07track Found interesting right away is once we're on the track,
- 20:09what I think a movie like this needs to do, or when it's done
- 20:11right, are things like stakes. And we saw the foot earlier, the
- 20:18ramifications of what could happen up there.
- 20:20And then, as they're making their initial trek in, Beck
- 20:23looks over and sees a Sherpa carrying.
- 20:26A guy. Back and you can't breathe.
- 20:28And he looks frozen and beaten down.
- 20:32And they kind of allude to that later where Beck is talking
- 20:34about his. Yeah, I live with the depression
- 20:37when he's trying to explain what he's up here.
- 20:39Yeah. And he says, I love the dark
- 20:41cloud. Yeah.
- 20:42And when I'm up here, I feel free.
- 20:45I feel. And then I like that.
- 20:47But he kind of says, are you feeling good now?
- 20:49He says, not really, right. This is suffering.
- 20:51Yeah. You could feel the suffering.
- 20:54It's those elements along the way that plant the seed for
- 20:58what's to come. And I think it helps an audience
- 21:02find our people. So if we've met some people,
- 21:05there are people and we're watching, what could happen?
- 21:08I don't know who's making it or who's not.
- 21:10Make like you. Know we don't know that and
- 21:12that's something when we're dealing with real events is that
- 21:15takes away some of the creative control from the writer
- 21:19director. I would have liked a version or
- 21:22maybe Rob makes it right. Of course as a character, this
- 21:25heroic thing at the end and like this big feel good movie.
- 21:29Like there's no good guys and bad guys in this.
- 21:31There's just. People, yeah.
- 21:33I think the movie fails one other time in recognizing this
- 21:35sort of good guys, bad guys thing, because I think it does
- 21:38set up to make the South Africans villains in a weird
- 21:42way, in a very short scene that I don't know how it plays out
- 21:47against. Yeah, what happens?
- 21:49But they're definitely antagonistic in a way that I
- 21:52didn't expect. You know what's funny about that
- 21:54is when I saw them, because they all were wearing the same
- 21:56jacket. Twister Jonas, son of a bitch.
- 22:01That's right, that felt like that group.
- 22:04They're in it for the money, yeah, not the.
- 22:06Sign Exactly. OK, like we're gonna you don't
- 22:08tell us when to go. They are so corporate.
- 22:11Yeah. And I agree with you.
- 22:12I don't know the accuracies of that, but it stood out to me
- 22:16enough to make that comp, if you will, to Twister, which is
- 22:19obviously and made-up and like, OK, that's extreme version of
- 22:24people not wanting to work together.
- 22:26And that's the vibe I got there. But I was happy at least that
- 22:30later in the movie that Rob and Scott Fisher, they have
- 22:35different styles. Yeah, you're a hand holder.
- 22:38They shouldn't be up here if they can't do it right, so let's
- 22:41say fair. But Scott had a couple of drinks
- 22:44at this point, he's having a good time and they do agree to
- 22:49team up a little bit. To South Africa.
- 22:52Seems right, yeah. We don't really see much of them
- 22:54after. That that's the last thing you
- 22:56hear, right? So it just feels tacked on a
- 22:57little bit of like, why are you creating this tension?
- 23:00Feels like that's a movie thing. I don't know, maybe or not, but
- 23:02that's something that sticks out to me as being like the movie
- 23:05needs a villain and we need to band together.
- 23:08I did like banding together though, because I do like how
- 23:10their personalities are different.
- 23:12Sure, they're willing to put that aside for the safety of.
- 23:14The team for sure. But my thing with this movie is
- 23:16ultimately, if the shit hits the fan, I would suspect that
- 23:20working together, not working together, you're still going to
- 23:22say them. And I didn't really see them
- 23:23working together to win. It all goes down.
- 23:25It didn't really strike me as other than, hey, we need some
- 23:28oxygen. But I feel like it's key point
- 23:29somebody else would do. Like, I don't know, whatever, it
- 23:32all works. It just feels a little tacked.
- 23:33On Ish. But Anatoly, he's like, it's
- 23:36really all of us against the mountain and the mountain has
- 23:39the last word. I'm like.
- 23:40Yeah, turns out. Yeah, I think so.
- 23:43Even for him, I mean he died less than a year later on a
- 23:47different mountain. Climb.
- 23:48Yeah, that's, I'm telling you, like the heroes of the movie,
- 23:51everybody like involved in this thing.
- 23:53Oh my gosh, we're all dead in like pretty quickly.
- 23:56Not all of them, obviously, but you know, kind of a hero a
- 23:58little bit in the. Movie.
- 23:59Yeah, if I had to pick one that's kind of above the.
- 24:01Rest he died in 97. Hmm.
- 24:03Crazy. Kind of sad now.
- 24:04I'll tell you what is sad is Doug and Doug's cough presents
- 24:08itself very early. Yeah, was he the first to cough?
- 24:11He was. There's a few.
- 24:13There was some cough in that certainly elevated, let's say
- 24:16beyond the average. That was some good coffee.
- 24:18Clearing of throat. Yeah, he's a great actor, I told
- 24:20you. Check out his work.
- 24:22But just in general, I didn't like hearing the coughing, but
- 24:25it sounded like, Oh my gosh, that's a serious cough.
- 24:27Like you better see a doctor. Yes, about that.
- 24:30So definitely good cough acting. Yeah, he's great.
- 24:33Don't get Tommy Lee coughing. He can't do it.
- 24:35He can't yawn, Can't cough, but you can do everything else.
- 24:38Bad news, but I feel the movie is due for little bit of tension
- 24:41though. Oh yeah, yeah, I mean this sure.
- 24:44Would you agree? Yeah, it's ramping up.
- 24:46Ramping up What better to ramp up tension with a ladder, A long
- 24:51extension ladder. Over a crevasse.
- 24:53Yes. I was gonna ask you a little bit
- 24:56earlier about that long bridge. At what point are you out?
- 25:00I would have to say I would never be in OK.
- 25:03So let's say you did muster the courage.
- 25:06OK, you've done skydiving. Yeah, I don't like heights.
- 25:09Skydiving was somehow different. Different weird way.
- 25:11But if you start up there, it's different.
- 25:14You're on the opposite way here. But say you did muster the
- 25:17courage, At what point are you certainly out?
- 25:21I'm, I'm referring to there is a long Ridge earlier, but it looks
- 25:23pretty steady, like it's used regularly.
- 25:25It's pretty safe. But here, the ladder, the ladder
- 25:29itself is a challenge. I gotta be honest, if I made it
- 25:31here, I'm not making it any further.
- 25:33It's also coming on the heels of waiting like 45 minutes because
- 25:37the backlog at this section. So I've had plenty of time to
- 25:41process the fact that there's this fucking ladder that I have
- 25:43to get over. Yeah, you can't think.
- 25:45But when my wife did bungee jumping she was told and she's
- 25:47like, you just can't. Think you got it?
- 25:49Just do it. Just say the same thing with the
- 25:51flight. Yeah, just, you know, talking
- 25:53about you're not like hanging out looking.
- 25:54Oh, interesting. Oht Wow.
- 25:56Guess we'll do it, I mean. No, you're committing at that
- 25:58point, and that's one of the things I like about the
- 26:00characters that were introduced to you, right?
- 26:01They're all committed. But my gosh, the idea that this
- 26:05is just glacier ice with a pickaxe and a ladder is just a
- 26:10lot to take and I I would not last very long whatsoever.
- 26:14And they illustrated it pretty well.
- 26:16Yes, like the dangers of. Just going across on a totally.
- 26:19So here's the first button hook because I think to myself, Josh
- 26:22Brolin is too big an actor to be in this movie.
- 26:25OK, I think about the scene where he's talking to his wife.
- 26:28Oh, I forgot my first anniversary.
- 26:30I got a call Peach. Yeah what do you think about
- 26:36that Yeah. What do you think about that?
- 26:37I think it's great. Oh good.
- 26:38She nails it. Sure, she's great.
- 26:40She has nothing to do in the movie but delivers what she
- 26:42needs to paycheck. But the idea that the
- 26:47foreshadowing or the foreboding, this ratcheted a little high.
- 26:51So I'm thinking, yeah, here it is.
- 26:52Oh, you. This is the cliffhanger moment
- 26:54where some big action sequence is going to happen and take a
- 26:57big. He's going to die and there's
- 27:00going to be some sort of big because again, at this point, I
- 27:03don't know. It's a true story necessarily
- 27:05OHS I mean I know it's true story.
- 27:07They talked about Rob Hall and stuff like that, but I don't
- 27:09know what the true story is. Is what I'm yes, exactly.
- 27:11You don't know. So makes it that person could
- 27:13have died just as easily. The idea that they set them U as
- 27:18this brash guy. He's got an attitude a little
- 27:20bit. He's got a wife that he's got.
- 27:22I didn't tell it. Whatever the case, to me, I'm
- 27:24thinking, well, this is what happens and he obviously is
- 27:28saved. And I thought, oh, you got me
- 27:29there because I would have thought.
- 27:30This is the moment really you? Thought, OK, I would have
- 27:33thought you cast an actor like that.
- 27:34Yeah. And you either sell tickets.
- 27:37Yeah. It's a bait and switch, right?
- 27:38It's a Drew Barrymore and Scream.
- 27:39It's a Samuel Jackson. Sam Jackson.
- 27:42Deep blue sea. Correct.
- 27:43It's that same principle that got me.
- 27:44Yeah. Because you wouldn't expect he's
- 27:46too big an actor for this kind of.
- 27:48Things that you were wrong, Phillip.
- 27:49Well, obviously, yeah, I'm saying I'm wrong.
- 27:51I. Said I want to make sure you
- 27:53know that you were wrong. He made it, by the way.
- 27:57That's right, yeah. But he also says this is not why
- 28:00I paid you $65,000. A bit of an attitude.
- 28:03There, Yeah, Texas. And it makes sense.
- 28:05He's like, I'm going to wait 45 minutes to die on the side of a
- 28:07fucking hill. Like get over yourself.
- 28:10So like his attitude? You like his attitude?
- 28:12Yeah, alright. I don't mind it.
- 28:14I learned to like him. And if that doesn't clarify the
- 28:17dangers or the stakes or what you're involved in.
- 28:20Once when they're at camp one, which is at 19,500 feet For
- 28:24those who don't know, they talk about ripping off clothes
- 28:27because you're too hot. Yeah, mental edema or something.
- 28:30Yeah, swelling of the brain. Another something rebel edema.
- 28:34Thank you. And the last one was fluid in
- 28:36the lungs. Fluid in lungs.
- 28:37Very good though. Doctor Phil on the couch and
- 28:42then the goal and then they're at Camp 2, which is 21,300 feet
- 28:48and the back needs to make a phone call.
- 28:50Yes, $25 a minute. And like you mentioned earlier,
- 28:53Mr. Nice Guy, Yeah. And hell, didn't like that.
- 28:56You pick up on that? She's like profit here.
- 28:58No, I wonder if that's sort of trying to undercut the movie as
- 29:01well, or undercut the reality is like the pressure, the pressure
- 29:06of summiting, right? Helen makes a couple of comments
- 29:09throughout the movie of another year with no one at the summit.
- 29:13Oh, you know, Rob, we can't give the way the free stuff.
- 29:16Why are you giving Doug a discount, right?
- 29:18Like what's John going to say if nobody makes it to the top?
- 29:20That's exactly what. But so there's this element of
- 29:23corporate we have to succeed. And I suppose this gets into
- 29:26another, put a pin in it cause it's going to tie into the rest
- 29:28of it. Good.
- 29:29It'll add to what I want to chat about later.
- 29:32But it is kind of throughout the movie, these decisions that are
- 29:36made, or maybe think they're being made for a particular
- 29:39reason. Speaking of like decisions, we
- 29:42really find out at this next scene, which is quite
- 29:44interesting. Why is each person doing this?
- 29:48I think it's John who sparks. Of course.
- 29:50Yeah, he's question. He's the journalist.
- 29:53And what's the generic response, Phil, for those who don't know,
- 29:56because it's there, is that enough?
- 29:57Yeah, I think for a certain section of people.
- 30:00It is not for me, not for you, no.
- 30:02Let's go through them and then we'll go through us as if we
- 30:05were there. OK, put us on the.
- 30:07Hill Exactly. You seem to have taken a liking
- 30:09to Doug. Of course, Doug, Doug's my boy.
- 30:12He's got a great answer when asked what his wife thinks of
- 30:15the decisions he's made, and he says she's really fine with it.
- 30:18Since we got divorced. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:20Which I love, but he obviously talks about the kids, and
- 30:24Helen's kind of prompting to tell about the kids.
- 30:26Tell about the kids? Yeah, it's a beautiful story.
- 30:29It is nice. Inspirational.
- 30:30I mean, it could be good questionable, but the idea that
- 30:34yeah, he's choosing to summit for the children.
- 30:36He teaches a class or speaks at a class and they have a flag to
- 30:40put on and dream big right person the mailman from can be
- 30:45on Everest and Pika and some of it.
- 30:47That's pretty impressive stuff. Inspirational.
- 30:49Good. I'll handle Yasuoka if I'm
- 30:52saying that right. Lovely lady.
- 30:54Lovely lady. Hers is pretty easy.
- 30:56That's why I'm taking it. Yeah.
- 30:57The lay up. Yeah, she's done 6 out of seven.
- 30:59At 46 years old where 47 on the on that scale.
- 31:04I've done all, I've done it all. Oh yeah, done at all, buddy?
- 31:08Over. Seven.
- 31:09OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 31:10If you what you want to. Hear strange that you have
- 31:12peaked, but no I. Have not not on any of the
- 31:15different kind of people different much different peak
- 31:19Well yeah, she's. Got to finish it off here good
- 31:21for her at this point that's a valid enough reason If have you
- 31:24done the other six why not go for it all that's fair,
- 31:27absolutely and that's all we really get as to the real wise
- 31:30right like we don't go, you know individual by.
- 31:32Industry, yeah, those are the ones that.
- 31:34Stand out. But we know Rob is doing it for
- 31:37family, for his business. He's got a kid on the way, as
- 31:40they said, and he finds out it's a girl.
- 31:43He's very excited about this and he says a little bit later he
- 31:47wants to name the kid Sarah. It's nice name biblical.
- 31:50Apparently Jan is not a fan. Oh yeah, It was like, really not
- 31:55a fan. Wasn't her first choice.
- 31:56What was her first choice? Emma?
- 31:58I don't know. That's what I'm saying.
- 32:00Like it's not even like it's a plot point.
- 32:01He just says name her Sarah and she's like, no, fuck off.
- 32:04That's not. Listen, she's carrying it.
- 32:06I guess she has a say in the matter.
- 32:07I just mean like what? We don't have any back story.
- 32:09Maybe it's like an ex-girlfriend right?
- 32:11That's that's a problem. But tell me for you, Phil,
- 32:17before we get further, if you can think of something while you
- 32:19would do it. I think probably for the same
- 32:22reason. Because it's there.
- 32:25More thinking in terms of a combination of Beck and Yasuko,
- 32:30OK, which is I don't have a like a depression in my life
- 32:34necessarily, but we talk a lot about purpose and direction and
- 32:38feeling something bigger than me and whatever else achieving
- 32:43something that is that the decisions that I took to get to
- 32:47here, I live with them. Some have been great, some have
- 32:50been questionable, and some of them just been outright bad.
- 32:52That's. Life, we're talking to you.
- 32:54That's how we go through life, right?
- 32:56Like, you know, the story and thinking one big thing to do.
- 33:00By the time I'm 50 or 47 or whatever, it's not that, you
- 33:04know, not Everest, but climbing in some level or whatever, or
- 33:08deep sea diving or jumping out of a plane or just doing
- 33:10something. You've done that, so you're good
- 33:12to. Go, I did that a few years ago,
- 33:14but just the idea of doing something bigger than just the
- 33:18day-to-day feels inspiring an interesting to me as I get older
- 33:22in life. Not quite as death defying
- 33:24necessarily, but just something doing something bigger than me.
- 33:27Gotcha. Good answer for yourself that
- 33:29sounds. Scripted, but I'll take it.
- 33:31I definitely couldn't understand the why.
- 33:34OK for this specific venture. Too cold.
- 33:37It's chilly. But that night that I watched
- 33:40the movie, I fell asleep like most nights.
- 33:43If I'm lucky. Sure.
- 33:44No deep Ram. I'm good.
- 33:45Yeah. You're solid.
- 33:46And I have a dream about Everest.
- 33:49Ohhh. And I still remember it vividly.
- 33:52After watching the movie like it's sunk in, yeah, OK.
- 33:54And this has been a week, I think, since I watched it and
- 33:57had this dream. And I say to myself in the
- 34:00dream, I know I'm in a dream, but man, this feels real.
- 34:04OK. I don't think I've ever said
- 34:06that. Interesting.
- 34:07Yeah. I'm reaching new levels, buddy,
- 34:08Inception levels here. Then I walk out to what is
- 34:13considered in dream world, the top of Everest.
- 34:16OK, but it's not a peak. It's a big, flat surface, the
- 34:21landing. Landing, Yeah, where I can walk
- 34:23freely. And it's like a combination of
- 34:25snow and ice. And I can feel the crunch that
- 34:28my feet make safely walking across.
- 34:31And then I look up and it feels like I'm almost in outer space.
- 34:36The stars are like in an arms length.
- 34:39And it's a really cool, vivid moment of pure peace and
- 34:45harmony. And I'm alone and I'm just up
- 34:48there in the sky, tranquility, everything.
- 34:51And then I walk back and then it's daytime and there's like a
- 34:56little house and someone's living there and like, that's
- 34:59the life. Complete peace and tranquility?
- 35:02Sure. Complete isolation from all the
- 35:04troubles in your life. It's a nice little home.
- 35:06Had a mailbox. That's what I remember Doug
- 35:09delivered earlier Exactly. And the rest of the dream didn't
- 35:14really make sense. But that section, crystal clear,
- 35:17crystal clear. And I woke up.
- 35:19That's why, that's why people do it.
- 35:21And they must get that feeling of freedom.
- 35:25Euphoria on some level, even if it's the edema.
- 35:28Yeah, right. Like even if it is just your
- 35:30brain. Playing track of oxygen, yeah,
- 35:32especially for Anatoli, who doesn't take up oxygen because
- 35:35he's too cool for that. But yeah, so that's quite
- 35:38interesting. Yeah, it's that's.
- 35:39Someone do it. But yeah, no, that's why it's,
- 35:41it was enough, you know? That's right.
- 35:43I was there. Yeah, actually just.
- 35:45Yeah. They're starting the track and
- 35:55we immediately have an accident. Ice falls, the glaciers shifts.
- 36:01Oh yeah, right. And the Harold.
- 36:03Yeah, yeah, they managed to save survive it.
- 36:06Yeah, no problem. But again, we're setting stakes
- 36:08here. This is this is things are
- 36:10shifting and you kind of mentioned it earlier, Rob does
- 36:12in his speech prior is ever shifting narrow windows.
- 36:16You got to move fast. You got to be willing to go.
- 36:19So right away we're like, oh, this is fine.
- 36:22They're walking up the hill. They got the ropes.
- 36:23And then one shift, yeah, and it can all go to shit.
- 36:27And I thought very effective and good idea just from storytelling
- 36:31to set that up now because of what's about to happen, you
- 36:35know, sort of down the line. And Annie's a professional.
- 36:38It's true. He was like, whoa, he shook.
- 36:40He was shook, but luckily we reached camp three, 24,000 feet
- 36:44up. I got the numbers, buddy.
- 36:46Sure, I get the impression, and you probably do too, because
- 36:50you're smart. Scott's pushing.
- 36:53Himself, Yes. Making some questionable calls.
- 36:55He's got a bad stomach. And the weather is also moving.
- 36:57Fast. This is another thing.
- 36:59I have a question about. Put another pin.
- 37:01Put another pin in that. OK, you need to be tracking
- 37:03this. Because I've got, But yeah, Jake
- 37:07is definitely letting on that he's looking a little rough,
- 37:09feeling a little rough. This is an element, true or not
- 37:13is irrelevant to me, but it felt like I don't really understand
- 37:16this character very much. I like him, I like his vibe, I
- 37:20like the actor, obviously the performance of that.
- 37:22But I'm not really sure where this decision making is coming
- 37:25from. And if it's true, all the fine.
- 37:27Like I have no issue with it but I just wonder if he's suffering
- 37:30like that or seemingly suffering like that, why continue on And
- 37:33like his brashness maybe I guess overtakes?
- 37:36He seems to portray a pretty young guy.
- 37:38Maybe he just thinks he's invincible at that age.
- 37:41I thought I was, too. When I was young.
- 37:43I was like, I can drink, I can do all this stuff and still do
- 37:45these things. Sure.
- 37:46So that's the impression I got. And it's just unfortunate
- 37:49because of what? Happens, but he definitely is
- 37:52pushing himself. I'll take him down, I'll run him
- 37:54back up right. Like I'll be right on your
- 37:56heels. That kind of.
- 37:56Stuff like take a break and Rob take a day's trying to tell him.
- 38:00Well, this is Rob, right? He's he's a hand.
- 38:03Hold the pin they're taking. The weather is getting bad.
- 38:07It's starting to look bad for the 11th of May.
- 38:09It's the word from Helen, who's monitoring, obviously at base
- 38:12camp and they suffer a bit of a storm.
- 38:14They kind of turned back and they settle.
- 38:16Up. But then at 2:00 AM, right?
- 38:20Can you be ready in half an? Hour.
- 38:22Yeah, let's go. Could you get in that headspace
- 38:25where you're maybe sleeping and then someone tells you we're
- 38:29going to? I'm a very light sleeper, yeah,
- 38:32and I am very much like I can open my eyes and be ready in 3
- 38:35minutes. Oh, so you're fine.
- 38:36So like this is not. Bro I'm not a deep sleeper where
- 38:38I'm groggy. What?
- 38:39Where are we at? Like the?
- 38:40First in line, let's get up there on like let's peek a
- 38:43travel. Lucky day someone likes us up.
- 39:07There May 10th. Let's go.
- 39:08Window of opportunity to head up to the balcony, which is 27,600
- 39:14feet. That's I don't like the sound of
- 39:15that. No, that's not where I want to
- 39:17have a balcony is no, no lanai up there.
- 39:19Thank you very much. Yeah, they say it takes 12 hours
- 39:22to the top. They got a 2:00 PM turn around
- 39:24and they're losing time, so let's.
- 39:26Go time and we have back. Right away.
- 39:29Having some eye issues, yeah. Vision problems.
- 39:33Had surgery a couple years ago. Could be that, sure, but that's
- 39:36gonna be a bit of an issue. So I think to myself, oh, you
- 39:39got me with the. Ladder.
- 39:41Here it is. This is the spot.
- 39:43This is it, Yeah, No. Like this is the cause.
- 39:45Eventually we're like, Oh yeah, no, no, he's.
- 39:47Just going to sit down and relax.
- 39:49I'll be right. He's fine.
- 39:50We're about an hour into the movie and we really reached the
- 39:53crux, the pivot point. This is big.
- 39:56The ropes aren't. Set.
- 39:57Oh my gosh. This scene Tense.
- 39:59Tense. That was done in a studio.
- 40:01Though Oh yeah, sure doesn't matter.
- 40:03I don't know, just well done that's.
- 40:04Actually a good point to bring up is that at any point did you
- 40:08feel? This is where the whole time.
- 40:11And I think it's a really good mixture of the practical stage
- 40:14work, real life on some mountain, obviously not Everest,
- 40:18but like on a mountain and some CGI obviously pepper it in.
- 40:22I thought very. Effective these green screens
- 40:25and they brought in snow, they brought in and made a room
- 40:27colder for Rob scene later. And yeah, I always felt they
- 40:30brought in really bright specific types of lights to get
- 40:34the right sun because of the way it is at that OK elevation, if
- 40:37you will. So I was really impressed with
- 40:40the cinematography of it and making me feel like I'm there.
- 40:43Yeah, and I'm cold. Phil yeah, I thought it was
- 40:45effective, very effective for that.
- 40:47I felt very into whatever was happening on the movie I totally
- 40:50bought. It and the problem with that is
- 40:51the first time I watched it, I was anxious for about half of
- 40:54it. Second time I'm anxious at the
- 40:56beginning because I know, right, like I'm feeling like it's my
- 41:00gut. I'm like, man.
- 41:01And that's, I think I said something about the movie.
- 41:03It does take away maybe a little bit of the enjoyment because
- 41:06anxiety isn't the best thing to feel, but it tells you they've
- 41:09done something right to make you feel that you're there with them
- 41:12to some level. Yeah, I think it's a compliment
- 41:15to the filmmaking to feel like you're on Everest, and I think
- 41:17it's compliment to the performances that you care what
- 41:20happens on Everest. It's a good blend of those two
- 41:22elements, I think. And because of the no ropes
- 41:26slows everything down to someone.
- 41:29Fucked up just walk you out. Just that walk though across
- 41:32like if I wasn't out at the ladder this is I'm not doing.
- 41:36That miserable. I told he's going to help out.
- 41:39Course, everyone's kind of pitching in, but my gosh.
- 41:41That's the teamwork I'm talking about, buddy.
- 41:43That's. True.
- 41:44Doug is struggling, though. Yeah, and a few members of Rob's
- 41:49team are just like, we can't, we're wasting too much time
- 41:51here. We're gonna go back.
- 41:52Yeah, I think three people come down.
- 41:54Stewart is one of them. How I think is even more no,
- 41:57he's working, but he's he's soon to leave.
- 41:58Right. Lou Stewart and the other guy
- 42:00got the tenors. That's right.
- 42:04And I think this is where Helen is anxious about like, oh shit,
- 42:08like, are we? Going to turn.
- 42:09Oh yeah. What's happening on the hill
- 42:10there? Safety first.
- 42:12They now establish that they're more than an hour behind, but I
- 42:16totally summits and now, OK, so we spent it halfway through the
- 42:20for the movie like that. This is a great pivot point.
- 42:24Reminds me a little bit of Fury Rd. same year, but we sort of
- 42:27reached an hour into the movie. We've gotten to where we're
- 42:30supposed to. Go that you're looking at your
- 42:32watch like I think we're about halfway through.
- 42:33The movie basically, it felt like that, and I was like, Oh
- 42:36yeah, this is how you structure this movie?
- 42:38Makes sense, but it means that what's on the horizon is
- 42:41probably not going to be too. Great.
- 42:43But we didn't seem too bad, right?
- 42:44OK, we're there. We're there.
- 42:46Everyone's happy. It's harder to go up and I would
- 42:48think that down. Yasko is is there, she puts her
- 42:51flag in and Rob is very proud of her.
- 42:54Everything is really positive and John was there first.
- 42:59Sure, he earned it. Doug is well behind.
- 43:05Well, behind, Yeah, Scott tells Rob he's the way, way back.
- 43:09Oh, Speaking of Scott, man, he is not looking good.
- 43:12Things are just starting to get a little dicey.
- 43:15I'm just going to say dicey. They've got no full oxygen
- 43:18bottles. There's a couple of half.
- 43:19Ones, yeah, there's some confusion around that with Andy,
- 43:22slash, Harold and John and where they are, I don't know
- 43:25necessarily logistics of everything, but.
- 43:27They're at some halfway or some point along the way when there
- 43:31is no oxygen or like no full. Models and that's what she need.
- 43:35That was made clear earlier. If you need.
- 43:38Oxygen. That'll be the thing that will
- 43:39likely get you Helen and the Doctor lady.
- 43:42That's right. So here we have Doug, though.
- 43:45Yeah, Rob calls it. You can't do it, buddy.
- 43:48You got around, you gotta turn around.
- 43:49Yeah, this is the fork in the road.
- 43:52Yeah, this is a decision needs to be made.
- 43:54Yeah. And Rob has been laid out as the
- 43:58guy that will say we are turning around.
- 44:01No, if Ands or buts it's not happening.
- 44:04No. But this is.
- 44:05Doug's last time. Well, maybe they could try
- 44:07again. Yeah.
- 44:10So third times the charm. Yeah.
- 44:12And Rob, alright, we're doing. It so this is I'm going to take
- 44:16out some pins. Perfect.
- 44:17That's a good time to take out some pins, Rob.
- 44:19As hero, what are your thoughts? Rob as hero, This is a tough one
- 44:26when you're dealing in this world of real events.
- 44:30There's a fine line sometimes and we haven't talked about them
- 44:32yet, but Worthington, who plays Guy later between courage and
- 44:37cowardness and they're making the right decision.
- 44:40A lot of it's hindsight, sure aspects.
- 44:42I understand that he wants. There's a connection there.
- 44:45They've had moments. Yeah, there's.
- 44:47That's been established. So hero.
- 44:50I don't know. I don't have an.
- 44:52Answer. I think the movie is presenting
- 44:54him as such and with him giving Doug the break on finances by
- 44:58giving back the break on his expenses.
- 45:00So you think the? Movie training him.
- 45:02I think they're trying to put them into a positive light, and
- 45:05I'm not saying he isn't. Yeah, but these decisions are
- 45:07critical and they basically killed everybody and himself,
- 45:10right? If you really think about it, by
- 45:12slowing everybody down and waiting for Doug, Beck says I'm
- 45:16going to wait for Rob and Rob says I told back to go down with
- 45:20the first two guys going. Down.
- 45:22Yeah, I heard that. I think there's a
- 45:23miscommunication there. The idea is like, well, Rob will
- 45:26save me, and then Rob never comes.
- 45:28So what happens to Beck? Happens to Beck in part because
- 45:31he's like no no no, I'll get Rob on the way back.
- 45:33And then there's Harold, who ends up going back.
- 45:35Up. And then how?
- 45:36Because he doesn't have the oxygen.
- 45:37He needs more people to go up to save Rob because he waited.
- 45:41Yeah, 3 hours to summit past or two hours past the cut off, the
- 45:45turn around point to save Doug, right?
- 45:48So I'm not saying he's not a hero, like I'm not here to cast
- 45:51aspersions, right? But the movie I think is
- 45:52presenting him as this like, oh, what a good guy.
- 45:56And I think the way this movie is presented, right or wrong,
- 45:59every decision Rob makes effectively kills people and
- 46:03causes a lot of what happens. Here, the timing of things,
- 46:06logistics of things. When it's in movie form, how
- 46:10it's displayed may not be accurate.
- 46:12We cut right to Doug. Oh, he's at the top now.
- 46:15That didn't take that long. But in reality, it took two
- 46:18hours, two hours. So, yeah, So when they say it.
- 46:21But sometimes because they're there for me as a viewer and may
- 46:25not sink in. So I don't think it's sunk in.
- 46:28That's the cause of all these deaths.
- 46:30Now I agree with you that he got himself killed and dug and
- 46:35Harold. Yeah, that would bother me.
- 46:37I know if it's the Virgin River, I don't even like the show.
- 46:41What a good face. Got a sweet?
- 46:42Face, I mean he died and wind talkers.
- 46:43I don't need to go through this again but that's an interesting
- 46:47point. Didn't get hit the full
- 46:48portrayal of him being a hero though.
- 46:51I got him just being a nice guy and he felt bad for Doug.
- 46:55Yeah, not hero level. The only issue I really have
- 46:58with it ultimately is a the movie presents him as the hero.
- 47:00He's the star of the movie ends with his daughter, right?
- 47:02Like he is the lead. Actor in the lead.
- 47:04Whatever. But my issue is more about the
- 47:07choices that this person ultimately made.
- 47:10You don't know the future, right?
- 47:11But they know the bad weather is happening on the 11th.
- 47:14You know this window he's supposed to be.
- 47:16Typically makes the right. Call guy on the mountain, right?
- 47:19He's your go to. He runs this company.
- 47:21I would hope that if Doug is in front of me, I have the ability
- 47:26to say this isn't opening, let's go to save everybody and we'll
- 47:29come back or not That's it. So it bothers me a little bit
- 47:33just that not making that assertive call regardless of who
- 47:37dies or doesn't, but just knowing the mountain and knowing
- 47:40your 2:00 and being so stern on it and then caving just feels a
- 47:44little shitty. And it's real.
- 47:46Like that stuff happens. So again, it's not a movie
- 47:48problem, it's a. Character problem.
- 47:50Let me play devil's advocate, because I don't get to do that
- 47:52often. It's a fun role.
- 47:54It's all Doug's fault. Oh yeah, sure, you could put it
- 47:56on spinach. Sure.
- 47:57Spin it. He's not running the show.
- 48:02Rob's running the show. I know ultimately pay him to
- 48:04bring you safely down, he says to himself.
- 48:06I know, but this is third time he really wants it for him and
- 48:09he obviously led his personal feelings affect his judgment.
- 48:12I think that's what we have here.
- 48:14It's a tough call. It's just sucks.
- 48:15It sucks. Absolutely.
- 48:17And it's heartbreaking. I'm not like I'm not complaining
- 48:19like I'm not complaining about like the movies portrayal of it,
- 48:21but I'm just like the IT. Feels.
- 48:24I think the difference between us is you got the bigger feeling
- 48:27of the hero's portrayal and that I got I got the more of you're a
- 48:31nice guy. Yeah.
- 48:32So I think that's where our slight disconnect is.
- 48:34But facts are facts. Unfortunately.
- 48:37Being a nice guy or a hero? Save anybody?
- 48:39No either way. Either way, it's not great.
- 48:43Yeah. And this is a good opportunity
- 48:45to talk about Guy Sam Worthington.
- 48:48Yeah, yeah. He was a nothing guy for me in
- 48:50Avatar, sure, but now I know him like, oh that's the guy from
- 48:54Avatar, sure, nice guy. Good looking guy.
- 48:57He's talking to Rob like Robbie, he got to come down.
- 49:00Yeah. Are you able to come down?
- 49:02Almost. Well, I think he more or less
- 49:04says forget about Duck, basically.
- 49:06And he's not wrong. Yeah, because Rob is saying Doug
- 49:09is fucked up. Yeah.
- 49:11So he's like, are you? OK.
- 49:12Can you come down? I think it's time.
- 49:14Yeah, and Rob says we're not there yet.
- 49:16Yeah, I think you are. I am.
- 49:18And when? And I'm thinking when Doug dies.
- 49:21I I liked the death scene in the fact where they don't follow the
- 49:24body totally. I think that's a good choice.
- 49:28I'm thinking now Rob might have a chance.
- 49:29And I don't mean that in a mean way, but I think you're better
- 49:33off just you getting down now. Unfortunately, it's too late at
- 49:38this point, but give me a little bit on guy like his role in this
- 49:42movie. I'm thinking, are you going to
- 49:44go up there? Are you going to save the day?
- 49:45Like what's your role? Are you going to talk on the
- 49:47walkie? He ends up going back to base
- 49:49camp, so any. Thoughts.
- 49:51And I don't really know who this character is, and I don't know
- 49:54his usual Yeah. So I have no real thought of
- 49:57what he's going to do or not do, because he's only introduced as
- 49:59sort of a guy on the mountain. Yeah, I think he's part of
- 50:02another team. I originally thought he was with
- 50:04the Everest team because as I mentioned, that was shot at the
- 50:07same time. Oh, maybe.
- 50:09And all this was happening. So when that Everest movie came
- 50:11out, it's just after it's all throughout the same 96.
- 50:15It comes out in 98, I think. So it's of this tour.
- 50:18They end up finding Rob's body in that documentary and there
- 50:22were buddies. I don't remember the names, but
- 50:24perhaps he is that that And so he's not the skilled climber
- 50:28necessarily that Will got. You the things maybe that.
- 50:31That's my thought. I think you might be right on
- 50:33that. I equate this movie.
- 50:35There's a little bit later, but right around this time when the
- 50:38weather gets really bad, things are getting crazy.
- 50:40Doug is gone, Rob is stranded and, you know, we're trying to
- 50:45come up with solutions and Beck and Blizzards and everything is
- 50:48kind of going crazy. You see that big cloud?
- 50:49Coming. It reminded me a lot of the
- 50:51perfect storm. Have you seen the perfect?
- 50:52Storm I have a couple of times actually.
- 50:54Perfect. This movie very much reminds me
- 50:57of that. Yeah, I can see.
- 50:58That the difference is, of course, if you recall that
- 51:00movie, nobody on the boat survives and.
- 51:04Well I can't say spoiler cause I claimed to have seen it, I just
- 51:07didn't remember. That Yeah.
- 51:09So nobody lives. And so the story of these 8
- 51:12fishermen in the ocean and what happens.
- 51:14True story, right? It's based on a true story.
- 51:17But no one on the boat came back to tell the story.
- 51:19So every conversation that happened on the boat is
- 51:21completely fabricated. Oh yeah, yeah, I didn't even
- 51:25think of that. Now this story, there are
- 51:27survivors, there are people at base camp that were having these
- 51:30conversations with Rob Jan was a person who has a baby.
- 51:33Scott Fisher was a guy who ran a company.
- 51:35I told right? Like those people that live back
- 51:39and so forth that lived told the story.
- 51:42Hmm. And the people that talked to
- 51:44Rob on the mountain told the story.
- 51:46So I believe that they offered him these things and.
- 51:49For sure, yeah. Declined to come down.
- 51:52My issue is sort of, I think he should know better.
- 51:55He should know better, Yeah. And for his safety and the
- 51:57safety of everybody else, he teases.
- 52:00Or they kind of make fun of it totally earlier.
- 52:03No oxygen. Oxygen.
- 52:04You're a guide now. What are you talking about?
- 52:05Like you have to have. Everybody on my team goes up
- 52:08without. That's right.
- 52:08And Harold's like, no. Problem no problem and they have
- 52:11some and there's some issues but I just think if that is your
- 52:14commitment Problem, No problem. And they have some and there's
- 52:11some issues, but I just think if that is your commitment, you
- 52:15gotta look at the big picture at all times if you're the leader
- 52:18of a group. And at this rate he basically
- 52:19abandons his group for Doug and then ultimately pays the
- 52:24sacrifice, I don't think I have a problem with it.
- 52:26I think maybe my issue is it makes me sad that these
- 52:29decisions are the things that end up destroying him and
- 52:32everybody. Else my wife said about the
- 52:34movie, she said it was sad for its time, 2015.
- 52:38That's what she says. Like it was.
- 52:40It was really sad. Maybe Scott Fisher's character
- 52:43was rubbing off on him. Maybe Cavalier.
- 52:45Maybe they shouldn't have teamed up.
- 52:46And maybe, yeah, you don't want to prove that I'm not such a
- 52:50stickler, but. Yeah, I think more than it made
- 52:52me angry, just made me sad. It was sad that a couple of
- 52:54these decisions would have go one way or another, and you knew
- 52:58what was on the horizon. You live in this world, right?
- 53:01So that hurt. Yeah, I think sadness trumped
- 53:04anger. And Speaking of Scott, at this
- 53:06point it's not looking too good. No, I again, I like yourself.
- 53:10I don't know who lives and who dies.
- 53:12Well, I know Doug dies. That's all I know at this point.
- 53:15And don't take Scott away, but I think the they didn't make it
- 53:19too obvious, but I had a pretty good impression earlier in the
- 53:22movie that he maybe one of the the non survivors.
- 53:25He was struggling. Yeah, you're the cough.
- 53:27He barely made it to the top. Looked like shit stomach issues
- 53:30and he, you know, freezes to death.
- 53:33Only God and his team that didn't make it.
- 53:35That's true. Rob Steam almost decimated
- 53:37completely and everybody on his. Team.
- 53:38They talk about that at the peak, actually.
- 53:40Yeah. So not only did they summit, but
- 53:42everybody made it out alive except him.
- 53:45That is kind of ironic based on his strategy, his approach, his
- 53:48approach. Interesting.
- 53:49And Rob does say later, earlier I had a mixed bag right on the
- 53:53side. Yeah, I had a mix, you know.
- 53:54Whatever that means you next, you're only as fast as your.
- 53:57Dog, you're only as fast as. I was gonna do the Buffalo
- 54:00thing, you know, the slowest Buffalo.
- 54:02Yeah, sure. Herd.
- 54:03The herd bit thing. Yeah, You know I'm.
- 54:05Talking the antelopes and the Yeah, right.
- 54:07What I like about it is the simplicity of actually all the,
- 54:12I should say all the deaths. But when Scott collapses,
- 54:15effectively he just taps on one of his Sherpas.
- 54:18And just as I'm done, I'm done. Go and.
- 54:22The he said sure, I'm out. Yeah, but I think there's
- 54:24something powerful in the acceptance of what's happening.
- 54:28Like in a really sad way. I lost when I think about he's
- 54:31almost. Ready for it?
- 54:32Maybe, I don't know, maybe you wanted.
- 54:33To I don't, I mean, it's tough to say, but when I think about
- 54:37one of the things that terrifies me in life is not the thought
- 54:41that I'm going to die. We all do it, but then I'm going
- 54:45to die today or like soon. And when you're drowning,
- 54:50burning asphyxiation, like whatever the case, ask Phil
- 54:53Connor see knows that's right. He's done it all, buddy.
- 54:56He's done it all. It's the feeling that it's
- 54:59happening, right. Everyone, like I want to fall
- 55:01asleep and you know, just don't wake up, right.
- 55:04Of that, when you're 90, having sex, that's ultimately,
- 55:06ultimately to go. When my mother died, it was
- 55:09like, I wonder at what point she knows this is it and how long
- 55:15before you actually die that you've already, you know, like.
- 55:19And so Scott here is like, I'm fucked.
- 55:22And did you know you're fucked 2 days ago, or a day ago, or an
- 55:26hour ago, or a month? You know?
- 55:28Just now you're getting Yeah, wait a.
- 55:30Minute, and I'd rather it be. In the moment.
- 55:32Now I'm done and and have it happen fast rather than on your
- 55:36way down gradually realizing. And guys like Rob, it's like the
- 55:41scariest thing. Not this specific case.
- 55:45Yeah, but generally it's the scariest thing I can think of
- 55:47because you're freezing. Whatever it is, Doug's gone and
- 55:51it's fast. How when that happens we'll get
- 55:54to. But like, those are fast things.
- 55:56This is a slower burn. Yeah, if you will.
- 55:58Yeah. That's the point.
- 55:59Really makes me sad. And so his saying I'm done feels
- 56:02eerily reminiscent of my mom. Cancer is not going away.
- 56:05Yeah, it'll take. Yeah, It's just a matter of
- 56:07time. And so here's our options.
- 56:09And she's just like, I'm done. I can't.
- 56:11Religion, buddy. Find it.
- 56:14Looked after, actually. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:16Didn't take, didn't take much. 2002 I spent a long time trying
- 56:18to figure. Out yeah, every saying that
- 56:20yeah, yeah yeah, Jesus Christ Superstar wasn't enough to bring
- 56:22it. Back No.
- 56:33I feel like Scott and Doug have sucked up a lot of the oxygen
- 56:37about talking about deaths and we have nothing left for Andy
- 56:41Harold. Hell yeah.
- 56:43The foreshadowing of feeling the heat.
- 56:45Oh, the hypothermia. Yeah, yeah, he's taking off his
- 56:47jacket and. Falls.
- 56:49That's it. Slips almost, yeah.
- 56:51That was sad. I like this guy.
- 56:53I don't know what it is and he didn't really want to go.
- 56:55Back. No, he did not.
- 56:57They were in closer earshot. He lives, right?
- 57:01Or at least lives maybe for another year, but eventually,
- 57:03yeah. And Rob's like I need help.
- 57:05Yep. You gotta come up here.
- 57:06Yeah. So because of Doug, Yeah.
- 57:09Because it Doug. So that was sad.
- 57:12And then we have a little bit of long distance calls which I
- 57:16don't know who's paying for these ones.
- 57:19Guy in particular thinks that maybe Jan, if anybody, can
- 57:25motivate Rob to get moving. Yeah, I think that's.
- 57:30Karen Knightley can't do it, and you can hear it in his voice.
- 57:35This is an incredible scene. I love the.
- 57:37Scene It is a great scene, and at this point I don't know if he
- 57:39makes it right there is that he's going to make it.
- 57:42Someone's gonna get to him. He's the hero, right?
- 57:44He's the hero, the. Moving people died in it, so we
- 57:47don't necessarily need anybody else to die, but because of the
- 57:50creative limitations, what happens happens.
- 57:53A powerful sad moments here. Yeah you're saying that if it
- 57:56were a movie movie he probably would Yeah, you're saying that
- 57:56if it were a movie movie, he probably would.
- 57:58Have lived, that's what I mean, Yeah, The guy ends up I'm going
- 58:02up, I'm the guy and that's what I mean.
- 58:04It changes things for me when I say this is based on a true
- 58:07story that I know I'm may not get certain things that maybe I
- 58:11wanted. I wanted more of a It's cold,
- 58:14it's Everest, it's a movie. Give me that Armageddon moment.
- 58:17Sure, I've accepted I'm not going to get that.
- 58:19And you know, that's fine. Yeah, I still enjoyed what I was
- 58:22watching. Yeah, I thought that scene
- 58:23between Jan and he was fantastic.
- 58:25I loved, as you're saying, the pain and anguish in his voice,
- 58:29cutting to him basically caked into the mountain top.
- 58:32He talks about how his hands are frozen, his feet are frozen.
- 58:35It's like I'm cold. This is almost like I'm.
- 58:38But I'm comfortable or something like that.
- 58:40And I thought that's what you say to somebody, you know, But
- 58:43yeah, it's clear at this point that.
- 58:45This is like my last. That things are happening, she's
- 58:48saying. Come on down.
- 58:50Didn't work. And he does rise from there.
- 58:53He's not over yet. Like he makes another grasp at
- 58:55something from that for sure. But what's really sad to me is
- 59:00everybody is listening, right? It's an open radio.
- 59:05Mic. Yeah, Chance.
- 59:06So watching John and the sort of base camp crew sit in that and
- 59:11hear it and hear the desperation in Rob's voice, the sadness, the
- 59:16feeling of exhaustion and whatever it, I thought really,
- 59:19really well executed. Absolutely.
- 59:22We're still holding on hope for Rob.
- 59:24You might still get your happy ending.
- 59:26Maybe, yeah. And then we shift to the rest of
- 59:31the team that that's coming down back Asuka.
- 59:35Other people? Yeah.
- 59:37Faceless. People, John made it back.
- 59:38He's fine. Yeah, he's back in the tents.
- 59:40Gotta read the story, got to write the.
- 59:42Book He's got snow blindness, yes, so he can't help out.
- 59:46Yeah. And Itola.
- 59:47Yeah, there, out there. You gotta help me.
- 59:50And I can't. But I think he's like, OK, I
- 59:54know you can't, I'm gonna go. He manages to bring everybody
- 59:58back one by one or whatever he needs to do except for.
- 1:00:04Back in. Yeah, basically arrives and
- 1:00:07finds that Yasuko is dead. Yeah, and Beck is basically
- 1:00:11dead. He's making calculated
- 1:00:13decisions, who to take and the best chances of.
- 1:00:15Survival. So it's so it's kind of sad that
- 1:00:18those, but you're like, OK, it's over.
- 1:00:19Yeah, I felt bad for you, Asuka. Yeah, like that.
- 1:00:23That's a sad one. It is.
- 1:00:24It really is Doug's fault again. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:00:27Not trying to make fun of it or anything like that, but it's
- 1:00:29tough. It's tough to see that.
- 1:00:31Yeah, and I mean it is sad and the reality makes it more
- 1:00:34poignant. So while we don't get the happy
- 1:00:36ending, the fact that these are real people as an element that
- 1:00:41helps ground it and gives a little gravity.
- 1:00:43And that hits really home in this next sequence where through
- 1:00:47Rob and basically trying to organize two people to go up and
- 1:00:51we find out that the two Sherpas that had oxygen and tea and
- 1:00:54everything else storms, Too bad they got to turn back.
- 1:00:57Yeah, kind of. I forgot what happened to them.
- 1:01:00There was just the bad storms. Bad.
- 1:01:02They just turned back. They were like, we can't make
- 1:01:03it. You're too far away.
- 1:01:05And they leave. And then they have to tell Rob
- 1:01:09that no help is coming. You gotta make it until morning.
- 1:01:11Yeah, He says that one more night, and he kind of knows.
- 1:01:14We all kind of know. I suspect at this point he's not
- 1:01:16going to make it. But Jan, Jan's gonna get on the
- 1:01:19phone one last time. Yeah.
- 1:01:21This scene is fucking sad. Heartbreaking.
- 1:01:24Yeah, I skipped it. It's a good time.
- 1:01:27I'm not watching it. Yeah, it's really sad.
- 1:01:31Those are good buys. Those are goodbyes, caller
- 1:01:33Sarah. She agrees.
- 1:01:34Then he says It's really sad. I'm not going to meet her.
- 1:01:37And it threw like a hushed, desperate gasping.
- 1:01:40Barely here. Yeah, like it's just fucking.
- 1:01:42Yeah, just the sound of his voice was enough.
- 1:01:44I don't even care what you're saying.
- 1:01:45It's like. You're clearly out.
- 1:01:47Yeah. And it's.
- 1:01:48Yeah. Pretty poignant, pretty sad
- 1:01:50stuff. Hmm.
- 1:01:51And yeah, that's the end of it. So you're thinking, OK, well,
- 1:01:56what's left, right? Everybody's fucking dead.
- 1:01:58It's really sad. It's not the end for everybody.
- 1:02:00That's right. And this I was like, you got me
- 1:02:03again. How does this happen every time?
- 1:02:07The third time? You idiot, I saw it coming a
- 1:02:10mile away. I.
- 1:02:11Just would have assumed that this guy who had already kind of
- 1:02:14died and they make a joke later. My dad, my husband was already
- 1:02:16died once this time. Or something yeah Or something.
- 1:02:18Yeah. Yeah, but the idea that Beck
- 1:02:19just rises from the dead effectively and walks down to
- 1:02:23base camp, I thought. Bullshit, I thought.
- 1:02:26Bullshit too. I'm like, maybe it just wasn't
- 1:02:28how it happened, but it happened.
- 1:02:30It's exactly how it happened. Apparently he just woke up and
- 1:02:34every book. And he saw visions of his wife
- 1:02:36and. Kids.
- 1:02:37Well, I mean that, but that's common.
- 1:02:39Sure, people have that experience.
- 1:02:40So religion. Yeah, Exactly.
- 1:02:43Texan. Hardcore Catholic, You.
- 1:02:45Know, but apparently yeah just woke up and his long as I can
- 1:02:50walk, I will walk. And that just shows you and
- 1:02:53everybody's at a different level inside of what they can pull as
- 1:02:57their last. No, this is not gonna take me.
- 1:03:00It's different for everyone and he.
- 1:03:02Yeah, that is he's got it you. Know Sammy Davis had.
- 1:03:07They lost basically both his hand and his arm on one side
- 1:03:11and. Part of his.
- 1:03:12Nose. Most.
- 1:03:13Yeah, most of his nose. Not a pretty guy, but.
- 1:03:15Made it anymore but just shocking.
- 1:03:18Divorced again. Yeah, no, still married.
- 1:03:21He's still OHS. This kid I know, I saw the
- 1:03:24ending. Great makeup effects too, and
- 1:03:27and really believing the pain and the anguish in that.
- 1:03:30They did a great job there. And the next wave of that, I
- 1:03:32have to tell you, like the movie.
- 1:03:34That's the peak. I've gone through the emotional
- 1:03:38bit with Rob and and all. Obviously everybody else.
- 1:03:41You've dealt with it. Yeah.
- 1:03:42And Beck is the heartwarming. Set up the chopper, get the
- 1:03:46chopper at the chopper. But I'm a little bit faded.
- 1:03:50I'm losing more. I thought the rescue mission to
- 1:03:53save helicopter took too long. They need their buddy.
- 1:03:57Yeah, I kind of moved on. I was like, I'm out with this
- 1:04:00movie. One thing I liked about it,
- 1:04:03well, I shouldn't say liked about it, I was just an odd
- 1:04:05thing is when Beck says what's dug up, Yeah, it's not.
- 1:04:10How is he doing? Yeah.
- 1:04:11What's he up to? Casual nature?
- 1:04:14That's him, right? And so he's got his fingers in
- 1:04:17the hot water and like, I don't know if that's a good.
- 1:04:19Idea. Does he feel any better?
- 1:04:20It's like I have no idea. Yeah, too early to tell.
- 1:04:23Yeah, But the main issue I had for that scene, I didn't mind
- 1:04:27the helicopter coming in, lightening the load.
- 1:04:29Sure. Give them their time to shine,
- 1:04:31buddy. Because if you think about it,
- 1:04:33whose life is worth more like that helicopter goes down
- 1:04:36Because it's not. Supposed to be up there.
- 1:04:38Yeah, it can crash and that pilot is dead.
- 1:04:40Yeah, I thought the same about the Rob and Doug stuff.
- 1:04:42I was just like, yeah, is this worth it?
- 1:04:44Peach has money. Yep, that's the impression that
- 1:04:47I get. Makes a few phone calls.
- 1:04:48He's yeah, he's feeling OK for himself.
- 1:04:50Money doesn't bring happiness necessarily.
- 1:04:52Though just brings life it seems.
- 1:04:55Their second chance here and there.
- 1:04:56But what bothered me about the ending is how it was edited.
- 1:04:59He got home way too early. Oh OK to Peach.
- 1:05:02Sure, just save that moment. I don't mind the scene, but save
- 1:05:05it. Let it.
- 1:05:06Let this whole thing play out. Play out, breathe for a bit.
- 1:05:10He's not immediately home after that.
- 1:05:12Like he's in the hospital for a while and I'm sure he was, but I
- 1:05:15need to feel that. I just thought it was completely
- 1:05:18unnecessary to inject that scene at that time.
- 1:05:22It's fine 4 scenes later it doesn't change the movie.
- 1:05:25Yeah, last 10 minutes of the movie, though.
- 1:05:26Is that your last image? Is that what you're saying?
- 1:05:28Like you want to be the. Last, it would be like the
- 1:05:30second last thing before we have the pictures come up and OK and
- 1:05:34the the real people and yeah, just not the last scene.
- 1:05:37I don't want to end it on that one, but I don't want it yet.
- 1:05:40That's fair. I didn't bump on that
- 1:05:42personally, and that's fine. OK.
- 1:05:44But I like the sadness of everybody returning back to the
- 1:05:46airport and seeing Jan and Helen and the weeping and guy there,
- 1:05:51right? Like the sadness of the
- 1:05:53ramifications of what happened. Yeah, that should be.
- 1:05:55Happening before, yeah, so I'm saying.
- 1:05:57And then the last shot, sort of Rob cuddled up on the mountain
- 1:06:00top, is that evocative side image?
- 1:06:02It is. And then we get the montage, if
- 1:06:05you will, of the faces, right? They talk about how 13 or so
- 1:06:08people and like, yeah, the real deals, the real faces.
- 1:06:11Yeah. And.
- 1:06:11I think they did a really good job of breaking.
- 1:06:14Yeah, really sad. We don't give enough credit, the
- 1:06:16casting director, ever. They finally get an Oscar this
- 1:06:18year. Yeah.
- 1:06:19Yeah. Casting Oscar the first time,
- 1:06:212026. Really.
- 1:06:22Yeah, OK. In a month or so coming out.
- 1:06:25Alright, Yeah, there we go. That's as they, as they.
- 1:06:28Should Yeah, it's it's a big thing.
- 1:06:30It's a very hard job, yeah, to find the.
- 1:06:32Right, people. And they absolutely nailed it.
- 1:06:34So they should go back and. We're retroactively given.
- 1:06:37Yeah, yeah, it's pretty powerful.
- 1:06:39I was so impressed by the movie and impressed by my experience.
- 1:06:46And as I mentioned at the beginning, the ability to hook
- 1:06:49me into what I want to know more of is the best thing about not
- 1:06:53just, I mean, movies do that anyway, but particularly a true
- 1:06:56story. It's sort of like, I don't care
- 1:06:57if it's true or not. The movie works.
- 1:06:58And because the movie works, I want to know the true story and
- 1:07:01what's real and what's not and whatever else.
- 1:07:03It doesn't matter. It doesn't change my opinion of
- 1:07:05the movie or yeah, yeah. My appreciation of even if it
- 1:07:08was complete fabrication, it got me interested in Everest, in
- 1:07:12climbing. And I've watched, like I said,
- 1:07:14different documentaries. I went.
- 1:07:16Deep, let's get out. There.
- 1:07:18So I loved it. I thought the movie was so much
- 1:07:20better than I really thought it was going to be.
- 1:07:21It's not a great movie. It's obviously not hitting those
- 1:07:23kind of levels. Solid 7.
- 1:07:25I would say easy. Solid 7.1.
- 1:07:28There it is. It is right Sometimes, yeah.
- 1:07:31I mean, not for everybody. It's subjective, but yeah, it's
- 1:07:33about where I would put it. I would say it's but much better
- 1:07:35than I thought it was going to be.
- 1:07:36It was really impressed by it, and I kept thinking about it and
- 1:07:39talking about it. If not that movie, but the
- 1:07:42Everest and the climbing and the storylines around it, those are
- 1:07:45things that sat with me for a number of days after watching
- 1:07:48it. It made an imprint.
- 1:07:49I may put this on the shelf just as an option.
- 1:07:52When is the last time you've ever considered putting one of
- 1:07:55my movies on? Your show I don't know.
- 1:07:56If ever tell you, that's got to be.
- 1:07:57Something. But I did own the IMAX DVD.
- 1:08:00Everest IMAX DVD. It was on sale at the video
- 1:08:03store but I never watched. It I would be curious to watch
- 1:08:05this in 3D. Oht interesting.
- 1:08:07Yeah, yeah, I think it was released.
- 1:08:08In 3D was yeah, yeah, I would watch it again for that reason.
- 1:08:12I don't think it would go on to my shelf.
- 1:08:14It's interesting because my intentions for watching this
- 1:08:17movie clearly changed in the 1st 10 minutes.
- 1:08:21It wasn't anything what I was expecting.
- 1:08:23You're like, I just wanna cold movie.
- 1:08:24I mean, I did get cold. So I mean, that worked.
- 1:08:29So once I settled into it, watched the second time again, I
- 1:08:32felt anxious a lot of the time. It could be other things going
- 1:08:35on in my life at the time. I had other stuff I did deal
- 1:08:37with today. So it was like probably not the
- 1:08:39best day to watch this movie because I was already feeling
- 1:08:41anxious. So this is not the right movie
- 1:08:44for that. But I like the vision of the
- 1:08:47director on what he wanted to bring to the screen.
- 1:08:50Nothing's over the top. Every tense moment is tense
- 1:08:55because it feels tense, not because they're forcing this
- 1:08:58tense moment. It's happening naturally.
- 1:09:00Sure, it all feels grounded in reality.
- 1:09:02And I appreciate that in a movie.
- 1:09:04Ironically, I was sort of in the mood for that happy ending hero
- 1:09:10at the end. And oh, Jake, he's going to,
- 1:09:12he's going to reel it in like, and I'm halfway through.
- 1:09:14I don't think she's going to make it.
- 1:09:15Doesn't look well, but for what the movie was trying to do and
- 1:09:20for what it did, I have to appreciate it.
- 1:09:22I think it's solid in all aspects.
- 1:09:24Performances, cinematography, the script, I think it all comes
- 1:09:29together. It's a solid watch.
- 1:09:31It doesn't give me the feeling of something I would want to
- 1:09:33watch very often because of the sadness.
- 1:09:36It's a bit of a negative emotion that there's room for that to
- 1:09:39feel, but not you don't live with it.
- 1:09:42Yeah, I want to bring it off the shelf too often and I think I
- 1:09:44have enough of sad on my show. If I have Arlington Rd., I don't
- 1:09:48know. Well, you definitely have a sad
- 1:09:52state of movies on the on your shelf.
- 1:09:54That's that first true. Touché.
- 1:09:59Put this on the shelf, but I think part of it is that I want
- 1:10:02the three or four other documentaries that I got are
- 1:10:04probably better suited for what is on my shelf.
- 1:10:07But I love this story and I was happy to dive into it and the
- 1:10:10movie sparked that. So I think that's part of why I
- 1:10:13have it in such affinity and your collector.
- 1:10:15So special features exactly. I'd be curious about.
- 1:10:18I get it. How did you film it?
- 1:10:19Like give me an hour making of doc on this like I'd be.
- 1:10:22Happy to invite me over. I'll watch it with you.
- 1:10:23I don't. Want my shelf?
- 1:10:24No. No.
- 1:10:24Yeah. Come on over.
