- 0:47Speaker 1: Welcome to today's edition of Reflection on the Word with
- 0:50Speaker 1: Richard K. I'm Chuck Christie, and today we are asking
- 0:54Speaker 1: you to spend a few moments of your time with
- 0:56Speaker 1: us each day as Richard shares from God's work with notes, quotes,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and story along with some of his own personal experiences
- 1:02Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that He has
- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. Now, if
- 1:11Speaker 1: you miss a portion of today's broadcast or would like
- 1:13Speaker 1: to recommend it to a friend, you can hear this
- 1:16Speaker 1: program anytime online at Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now
- 1:21Speaker 1: here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So those who were scattered went on their way, proclaiming
- 1:28Speaker 2: the message of good news. Philip went down to a
- 1:32Speaker 2: city in Samaria and preached the Messiah to them. The
- 1:37Speaker 2: crowds paid attention with one mind to what Philip said
- 1:41Speaker 2: as they heard and saw the signs he was performing
- 1:45Speaker 2: for unclean spirits. Crying out with a loud voice came
- 1:49Speaker 2: out of many who were possessed, and many who were
- 1:53Speaker 2: paralyzed and laying were healed. So there was great joy
- 1:58Speaker 2: in that city from the Book of Acts, chapter eight,
- 2:02Speaker 2: beginning in verse four, continued through verse eight. Yesterday we
- 2:10Speaker 2: talked about the reason for the understanding of the working
- 2:18Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life. The one
- 2:21Speaker 2: thing that seems to be paramount in every example is
- 2:28Speaker 2: that there are really two functions of the Holy Spirit
- 2:35Speaker 2: in a believer. The first is the function of sealing,
- 2:41Speaker 2: if you will, it is the function of proving that
- 2:48Speaker 2: the believer has received Jesus as Lord and is awaiting
- 2:56Speaker 2: their inheritance eternally, regardless of what may take place in
- 3:03Speaker 2: the temporal phase of their life. Their inheritance that they
- 3:10Speaker 2: are sealed for is eternity with Christ. And so the
- 3:15Speaker 2: work of the Spirit is to perform that ceiling, to
- 3:22Speaker 2: make sure that the believer understands who they are and
- 3:29Speaker 2: who paid the price for them. But then there is
- 3:35Speaker 2: a significant work of the Holy Spirit that we have
- 3:40Speaker 2: also been discussing, and that is the empowerment of the
- 3:47Speaker 2: Holy Spirit. Reading from Andrew Murray's writing Experiencing the Holy Spirit,
- 3:56Speaker 2: one of the questions that he asked is where do
- 4:01Speaker 2: we stand as the Church today in modern society. He
- 4:07Speaker 2: offers this as a means of reflection. There are disciples
- 4:13Speaker 2: of Christ who know little or nothing of this conscious
- 4:18Speaker 2: in dwelling of the Holy Spirit. It is of the
- 4:22Speaker 2: utmost importance to understand this statement. The more fully we
- 4:28Speaker 2: come under the conviction of its truth, the better we
- 4:32Speaker 2: will understand the condition of the Church in our own
- 4:35Speaker 2: time and be enabled to discover where we really stand.
- 4:42Speaker 2: The condition referred to becomes very plain when we consider
- 4:47Speaker 2: what took place at Samaria. Philip the Evangelist had preached there.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Many had been led to believe in Jesus and were
- 4:59Speaker 2: baptized in into his name, and there was great joy
- 5:02Speaker 2: in that city. When the apostles heard this news, they
- 5:08Speaker 2: sent down Peter and John, who, when they came to Samaria,
- 5:13Speaker 2: prayed that these new converts might receive the Holy Spirit.
- 5:22Speaker 2: This gift was something quite different from the working of
- 5:26Speaker 2: the Spirit that led them to conversion, faith and joy
- 5:32Speaker 2: in Jesus as a savior. It was something higher, for
- 5:36Speaker 2: now from heaven and by the glorified Lord himself, the
- 5:40Speaker 2: Holy Spirit was imparted in power with his abiding in
- 5:46Speaker 2: dwelling to consecrate and fill their hearts in this new experience.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Had not been given, the Samaritan disciples would still have
- 5:58Speaker 2: been Christians, but they would have remained weak. Thus it
- 6:04Speaker 2: is that in our own days there are still many
- 6:09Speaker 2: Christians who know nothing of this gift of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:16Speaker 2: You see, there is a longing within the body of
- 6:21Speaker 2: Christ to know Jesus in his working of the miracles
- 6:29Speaker 2: that he performed, the healing that he performed, the deliverance
- 6:34Speaker 2: that he performed, in other words, to know the works
- 6:39Speaker 2: that Jesus did, because Jesus said in John chapter fourteen,
- 6:46Speaker 2: in beginning in verse twelve, he said, greater works than
- 6:51Speaker 2: these will you do, because I go to my father.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And he was saying that because he was going to
- 7:02Speaker 2: send the Holy Spirit who would empower them to do
- 7:08Speaker 2: the work that he had proclaimed. Going back to this
- 7:14Speaker 2: situation in Samaria, I want us to see some significant things. First,
- 7:22Speaker 2: there was in the city of Samaria a man named Simon.
- 7:29Speaker 2: He had previously practiced sorcery in that city and astounded
- 7:36Speaker 2: the Samaritan people while claiming to be somebody great. They
- 7:42Speaker 2: all paid attention to him, from the least of them
- 7:45Speaker 2: to the greatest, and they said, this man is called
- 7:49Speaker 2: the great Power of God. They were tended to him
- 7:54Speaker 2: because he had astounded them with his sorceries for a
- 7:58Speaker 2: long time. But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed
- 8:03Speaker 2: the good news about the Kingdom of God and the
- 8:06Speaker 2: name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Then even Simon himself believed, and after he was baptized,
- 8:17Speaker 2: he went around constantly with Philip and was astounded as
- 8:22Speaker 2: he observed the signs and great miracles that were being performed.
- 8:29Speaker 2: When the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria
- 8:34Speaker 2: had welcomed God's message, they sent Peter and John to them.
- 8:40Speaker 2: After they went down there, they prayed for them that
- 8:43Speaker 2: they might receive the Holy Spirit, for He had not
- 8:47Speaker 2: yet come down on any of them. They had only
- 8:52Speaker 2: been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then
- 8:57Speaker 2: Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they
- 9:02Speaker 2: receive the Holy Spirit. Listen. When Simon saw that the
- 9:07Speaker 2: Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the
- 9:11Speaker 2: apostles hands, he offered them money, saying, give me this
- 9:17Speaker 2: power too, so that anyone I lay hands on may
- 9:21Speaker 2: receive the Holy Spirit. But Peter told him, may your
- 9:27Speaker 2: silver be destroyed with you, because you thought the gift
- 9:32Speaker 2: of God could be obtained with money. You have no
- 9:36Speaker 2: part or share in this matter because your heart is
- 9:41Speaker 2: not right before God. Therefore, repent of this wickedness of yours,
- 9:48Speaker 2: and pray to the Lord that the intent of your
- 9:51Speaker 2: heart may be forgiven. For I see you are poisoned
- 9:56Speaker 2: by the bitterness and bound by iniqu And Simon pleaded,
- 10:02Speaker 2: please pray that the Lord will do what you said,
- 10:08Speaker 2: so that nothing you have said may happen to me. Then,
- 10:13Speaker 2: after they had testified and spoken the message of the Lord,
- 10:16Speaker 2: they traveled back to Jerusalem, evangelizing many villages of these Samaricans.
- 10:24Speaker 2: It's very interesting that in this particular passage we find
- 10:29Speaker 2: the significance of Philip's preaching. Now, I want you to
- 10:34Speaker 2: understand what we just read in the Book of Acts,
- 10:38Speaker 2: beginning in chapter eight, as we saw in verse four
- 10:43Speaker 2: and following, what had taken place, was that Philip departed
- 10:50Speaker 2: Jerusalem and he was sent to Samaria. While he was
- 10:56Speaker 2: in Samaria, notice what was happening. He was preaching the
- 11:02Speaker 2: good news that Jesus was the Messiah, but he was
- 11:07Speaker 2: also performing miraculous works confirming his message. You see, there
- 11:16Speaker 2: was one thing to preach the Word, there was another
- 11:20Speaker 2: thing for God to demonstrate his life giving power through
- 11:26Speaker 2: the working of the Holy Spirit. In Philip's case, what
- 11:31Speaker 2: you saw were that there were many who had unclean spirits.
- 11:36Speaker 2: They cried out with a loud voice, and they came
- 11:39Speaker 2: out of many who were possessed, and many who were
- 11:44Speaker 2: paralyzed and lame were healed, and so there was great
- 11:49Speaker 2: joy in that city. Now, I want you to understand
- 11:54Speaker 2: that this was something that was normal for the working
- 12:00Speaker 2: of ministry. In other words, Philip was able to do
- 12:05Speaker 2: the works that he did not to bring any attention
- 12:10Speaker 2: to himself, Unlike Simon the sorcerer, who had brought attention
- 12:17Speaker 2: to himself and tried to manipulate the people with his sorceries.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Philip was simply proclaiming the power of God, demonstrating it
- 12:27Speaker 2: by delivering those who were possessed of the devil and
- 12:33Speaker 2: healing many who were afflicted. If you can see this,
- 12:39Speaker 2: you recognize hand in hand the preaching of the Gospel
- 12:44Speaker 2: and the demonstration of the power of God. And so
- 12:50Speaker 2: we see that in this example, which is only one
- 12:55Speaker 2: of many, there was a need for those who believe.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Because they did believe, they were Christians, they believed in
- 13:08Speaker 2: the Lord Jesus. Now I want to ask you a question.
- 13:12Speaker 2: It says that the Holy Spirit had not come down
- 13:17Speaker 2: on them, and yet they were believers. How did they
- 13:23Speaker 2: have faith to believe if the Holy Spirit was not
- 13:28Speaker 2: able to draw them, convict them, seal them for the
- 13:34Speaker 2: day of redemption. You see, they were believers in the
- 13:41Speaker 2: Lord Jesus. They had already received the life giving repentance
- 13:49Speaker 2: of the Lord Jesus' sacrifice, but the empowerment came through
- 13:56Speaker 2: the laying on of the apostles. In this particular example,
- 14:03Speaker 2: Peter and John heard the news that in Samaria those
- 14:09Speaker 2: believers were ready to receive power to continue to do
- 14:16Speaker 2: the works of ministry. In other words, it was not
- 14:20Speaker 2: supposed to be contained by just a few, because these
- 14:25Speaker 2: believers were also used to further spread the gospel of
- 14:30Speaker 2: the Lord Jesus throughout all of Samaria and surrounding regions.
- 14:38Speaker 2: It is interesting to note that throughout all of the
- 14:43Speaker 2: scriptural representations, one of the things that is so obvious
- 14:50Speaker 2: is that along with the preaching came the demonstration of power.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment wrap up.
- 15:00Speaker 1: But if you've just joined us, you've been listening to
- 15:02Speaker 1: reflections on the Word with Richard KA. You can hear
- 15:05Speaker 1: this message in its entirety again online as well as

- 15:16Speaker 1: faithulits from the America's twenty five Favorite Hymns album unless otherwise.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Express scriptures are read from the Holman Christian Standard Bible,
- 15:26Speaker 1: which is published by Homann Bible Publishers in Nashville, Tennessee.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Additional resources used for reflections on the Word with Richard
- 15:33Speaker 1: k include Great Is Thy Faithfulness by Our Daily Bread
- 15:38Speaker 1: and printed by Discovery House Publishers. Again here is Richard
- 15:42Speaker 1: to wrap up today's message.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Today in the church, there is much preaching and a
- 15:52Speaker 2: lot of educated teaching, but there is a lack of
- 15:58Speaker 2: the power being manifested in the body of Christ. Should
- 16:05Speaker 2: it be that way, the Bible says, no, You should
- 16:12Speaker 2: be full of the Holy Spirit as a believer to
- 16:16Speaker 2: do the works that God has prepared you for, regardless
- 16:22Speaker 2: of what your particular calling may be. You must have
- 16:28Speaker 2: the power of the Holy Spirit. And so we find
- 16:35Speaker 2: constantly this crying out for the power of the Holy Spirit,
- 16:43Speaker 2: so much so that there are those who are willing
- 16:48Speaker 2: to pay to receive that power, and yet the Holy
- 16:54Speaker 2: Spirit gives it freely to those who will submit and
- 17:00Speaker 2: surrender all of their will to him. When you notice
- 17:07Speaker 2: that the working of the Spirit comes to believers so
- 17:12Speaker 2: they can complete the work of ministry, think about where
- 17:18Speaker 2: you stand in ministry today. Do you also experience the
- 17:26Speaker 2: working of the power of the Holy Spirit. Are the
- 17:29Speaker 2: nine gifts of the Holy Spirit evident in your life?
- 17:34Speaker 2: If not, then seek God for the fullness of the Spirit.
- 17:41Speaker 2: We are encouraged to go to Him and ask Him
- 17:47Speaker 2: for the fullness of the Spirit, regardless of where you
- 17:50Speaker 2: may be. The fullness of the Spirit is for you
- 17:56Speaker 2: and for I as believers. And that is today's Reflection
- 18:04Speaker 2: on the Word.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Thank you, Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
- 18:09Speaker 1: with the next edition of Reflections on the Word with
- 18:11Speaker 1: Richard k or Richard on the entire team. This is
- 18:14Speaker 1: Chuck Christie saying thanks for listening to this edition of
- 18:18Speaker 1: Reflections on the Word.
