- 0:22SPEAKER_00: As you probably know, one of the downsides of social media is that everybody can see what you do.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes there is this immediate judgment when somebody goofs up or makes some kind of mistake or says something a little foolish.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Therefore, we're all hyper aware of doing something to avoid looking foolish.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: We avoid risk and we place a premium on appearances.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: But we've got to move past this impulse and instead keep what I call a beginner's mindset.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Life and technology is changing so fast that there's no way to keep up with it.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And if you're going to stay relevant, you've got to be willing to experiment, to learn, to make mistakes and to grow.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: I'm facing this actually right now because I'm learning to do short form video on social media.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I'm not very good at it, but I'm learning and I'm willing to practice in public and go for it with the beginner's mindset.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So how about you?
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: What are you learning?
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Is it book marketing?
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Is it social media?
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Is it working on that first book?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Is it getting started with public speaking or podcasting?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Well, whatever it is, just dive in and don't worry about what everybody else thinks.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: You'll catch on quickly enough.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: In this ever-changing media and technological landscape, we're honestly all beginners all the time.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: But the prize will belong to those of us who are willing to adapt and change with the times.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Consider what you're learning right now as a writer.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Do you have a beginner's mindset in your writing and in your creative work?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: If so, that's really awesome.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And if it's something that you kind of struggle with, I just want to challenge you to think about what I've said in this episode is the value of just keeping a beginner's mindset, not having to have it all figured out, but just dipping your toe in the water and taking some action and learning as you go.
