Latest / The Follow-On / Domesticated - "The summer of Marnus is here!" Where does Labuschagne bat after historic run? + Ashes hopeful Jake Weatherald talks Shield form, staying grounded & Ashes contention
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Manus Labashaine makes an irresistible case for Ashes selection. Is
- 0:04Speaker 1: Fergus O'Neill shaping as a smoky for the squad and
- 0:07Speaker 1: will be joined by Jake Weather or demand on everybody's
- 0:10Speaker 1: lips ahead of this Ashes summer, I'm justin Edwards, welcome
- 0:14Speaker 1: to domesticated Fox Cricket, right, and Nick Savage is alongside me.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Nick, let's get straight into it.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Manus Labashaane, he just cannot stop scoring runs at the moment.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:22Speaker 4: Well, the summer of Manus is officially here. Four hundreds
- 0:25Speaker 4: in five games. He's looking back at his best. It's
- 0:28Speaker 4: obviously been a quiet a couple of years in the
- 0:30Speaker 4: Test arena, but I mean, sitting here now, looks like
- 0:32Speaker 4: he has to play that first Test, does it?
- 0:34Speaker 5: We don't know where, but it looks like he has
- 0:35Speaker 5: to be in at eleven.
- 0:36Speaker 1: That certainly looks like the conversation has moved from will
- 0:40Speaker 1: Manus bat in the ashes to where will Manus bat
- 0:42Speaker 1: in the ashes? Whether it's opening or number three. We
- 0:45Speaker 1: said a couple of weeks ago we felt like if
- 0:47Speaker 1: somebody got three centuries, they'd be in. Manus has got four,
- 0:51Speaker 1: so he's well and truly making the case, but the
- 0:53Speaker 1: question remains, is it going to be opening or number three?
- 0:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it seems to be an issue for the past
- 0:58Speaker 4: couple of years. You know, we've got a lot of
- 1:00Speaker 4: strong middle order batters, but we don't have anyone at
- 1:02Speaker 4: the top of the order, and an easy fix would
- 1:04Speaker 4: be putting minus into open. He hit it during the
- 1:06Speaker 4: World Test Championship Final. He's done it a little bit
- 1:08Speaker 4: in county cricket in the UK, but obviously he's preferred
- 1:11Speaker 4: position and where he's been so successful has been number three.
- 1:15Speaker 4: The obvious problem there is you have to bring in
- 1:17Speaker 4: a specialist opener, someone who's probably unproven, hasn't played a
- 1:20Speaker 4: lot of Test or ashes cricket, and you have to
- 1:22Speaker 4: probably squeeze out and all round her one of Cameron
- 1:25Speaker 4: Green or Bow Websters. So that's the juggling act. That's
- 1:27Speaker 4: the dilemma over the next few weeks four weeks for
- 1:30Speaker 4: that first Test, and it doesn't really seem to be
- 1:32Speaker 4: an obvious solution to it, but everyone seems to be
- 1:35Speaker 4: saying Minus can open. He's capable of doing it. He
- 1:37Speaker 4: seems to be open to doing it. Quietly, actually preferred
- 1:40Speaker 4: a bit number three, but it's gonna be interesting a
- 1:42Speaker 4: few weeks ahead to see how that kind of shapes up.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think.
- 1:45Speaker 1: There's a whole lot of difference between opening and number three,
- 1:47Speaker 1: because number three you might be in the first over anyway.
- 1:50Speaker 1: The scores of one hundred and fifty nine and one
- 1:52Speaker 1: hundred and sixty in the Shield at number three, one
- 1:54Speaker 1: hundred and thirty and one hundred and five in the
- 1:55Speaker 1: One Day Cup, it's just an irresistible case. The problem
- 1:59Speaker 1: is the all rounders, and you would have to squeeze
- 2:01Speaker 1: out one of Green or Webster to fit Manus in
- 2:04Speaker 1: at three, but both are injured at the moment.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Well, Webster hasn't really started his summer yet, has He's
- 2:10Speaker 4: missed both those first two shield rounds of Tasmania. Apparently
- 2:13Speaker 4: that second game was precautionary. He probably could have played
- 2:16Speaker 4: that second game, but crick Australia rapt in cotton Wool
- 2:19Speaker 4: said no, no, no, we're gonna wait for you to
- 2:20Speaker 4: come into that third Shield round. And Camen Green just
- 2:23Speaker 4: recently last week a minor side issue.
- 2:26Speaker 5: He's been ruled out of the Odie Eyes.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Apparently that isn't going to impact his chances of serving
- 2:30Speaker 4: as an all rounder for the Ashes. But we'll speaking
- 2:33Speaker 4: just before we recorded this, he's only bowled four overs
- 2:36Speaker 4: in professional cricket over the last twelve months and those
- 2:39Speaker 4: numbers just don't suggest someone's ready to be an all
- 2:41Speaker 4: rounder for an Ashes series, for our five Test Ashes series.
- 2:44Speaker 4: So both of them have a few little question marks
- 2:46Speaker 4: heading to this series. And if it does count come
- 2:49Speaker 4: down to one or the other, it kind of looks
- 2:51Speaker 4: like where it was the most fit could be playing
- 2:53Speaker 4: that first Test. We'd want a full strength all round
- 2:55Speaker 4: of supporting the three quicks and Nathan Lyons. So yeah,
- 2:59Speaker 4: kip a eye on them over the next few weeks.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I do think Webster is more likely to be hurt
- 3:04Speaker 1: by his absence than Green is. It's a far different
- 3:07Speaker 1: conversation going into that first Ashes Test when you're weighing
- 3:11Speaker 1: up Webster or Green if that is the contention, If
- 3:14Speaker 1: Webster's got a Shield hundred that his back and some
- 3:16Speaker 1: Shield wickets, then it's a lot more of a toss up,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I think. Whereas Cameron Green has multiple Test centuries, he's
- 3:23Speaker 1: got the imperious Shield record averaging fifty and shield creed
- 3:25Speaker 1: he's got a five. We get haul in a Test match.
- 3:27Speaker 1: He feels like, if it's a fifty to fifty, they'll
- 3:30Speaker 1: go with Green. They think he's the player of the future,
- 3:32Speaker 1: the one that's been emarked for a long time. Webster,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I think if he plays that third Shield game, one
- 3:39Speaker 1: hundred would go so well for his chances at playing
- 3:43Speaker 1: in that first Test. In terms of the makeup of
- 3:46Speaker 1: the team, are you what would you have at the
- 3:48Speaker 1: moment Manus at three and one of Green or Webster
- 3:51Speaker 1: or Manus opening and both Green and Webster.
- 3:53Speaker 4: I think if they were both Green Webster both fully fit,
- 3:56Speaker 4: I'd be leaning towards minus Opening, But considering we do
- 3:58Speaker 4: have some concerns for both them, I prefer to see
- 4:01Speaker 4: Manus as a preferred position, Cameron Green a little bit
- 4:04Speaker 4: down to the order. I think it's all kind of
- 4:05Speaker 4: widely agreed Number three is a little bit high for him,
- 4:08Speaker 4: and then pick a specialist opener that's a partner Quaja.
- 4:10Speaker 4: The past two years we've trialed so many middle order players.
- 4:13Speaker 4: We've had Nathan McSweeney up there with Chucked, Steve Smith
- 4:17Speaker 4: up there, Travis Head and the subconsin. We put Manus
- 4:20Speaker 4: Slavish up there for the World Tess Championship final. None
- 4:22Speaker 4: of them have really nailed it. And look at this
- 4:25Speaker 4: Ashes series. You want the best siding leven. I think
- 4:28Speaker 4: two special sloptions is probably the way to go at
- 4:29Speaker 4: this stage.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I think I am with you.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I am manus at three one of Green or Webster,
- 4:34Speaker 1: and I'd have Jake weatherworld opening. And I'm not just
- 4:36Speaker 1: saying that because we're about to speak to him. The
- 4:38Speaker 1: other opening contender, Sam Constace, got his first significant score
- 4:42Speaker 1: of the summer a half century in the Shield, but
- 4:45Speaker 1: he had a mishap in the One Day Cup. He
- 4:47Speaker 1: got out ramping. Now, I don't think a match that
- 4:51Speaker 1: was reduced to thirty six ers because of rain is
- 4:53Speaker 1: actually going to play too much into selectors thinking for
- 4:56Speaker 1: a Test match. But it wasn't ugly dismissed.
- 4:58Speaker 6: It wasn't it.
- 4:59Speaker 5: No, of course.
- 4:59Speaker 4: I mean we saw him in that second innings of
- 5:01Speaker 4: that Shield game in Victoria looking really solid. He was
- 5:04Speaker 4: driving well. He ramped Scott Bowland over the boundary for
- 5:07Speaker 4: six as well, so we still got it in his arsenal.
- 5:10Speaker 4: But I think with Constans he is still a work
- 5:12Speaker 4: in progress.
- 5:13Speaker 5: He just turned twenty.
- 5:14Speaker 4: He only has a handful of Shield games under his belt,
- 5:16Speaker 4: let alone Test cricket, and there is a big futurehead
- 5:20Speaker 4: of him. We know that was when Kwaja is approaching
- 5:22Speaker 4: that end of his Test career. I mean he may
- 5:25Speaker 4: even retire this summer.
- 5:26Speaker 5: We don't know.
- 5:26Speaker 4: He's about to turn thirty nine. That spot feels like Sam's.
- 5:29Speaker 4: When Kouwaja decides to hamp the boots, that's when Sam
- 5:32Speaker 4: can probably slot in.
- 5:34Speaker 5: I would love to see him just go back to shield.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Fine tune his game, find his feet a bit more,
- 5:37Speaker 4: get some runs under his belt. So when that chance
- 5:40Speaker 4: does come, he'll absolutely nail. I've got no doubt about that.
- 5:42Speaker 4: We all can see the talent. We know he's capable
- 5:44Speaker 4: of big things. I just don't think this Ashes series
- 5:48Speaker 4: is quite ready for him yet. Actually weather around, he's
- 5:51Speaker 4: not quite ready for the Ashes at this stage.
- 5:53Speaker 5: So yeah, exciting player.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I don't see him playing him Perth and the general
- 5:57Speaker 4: consensus is not he's not going to be there.
- 5:59Speaker 1: He does still only have the three first class centuries
- 6:01Speaker 1: to his name. He's so young as a cricketer. It
- 6:04Speaker 1: does feel as though, and it's quite rare that in
- 6:08Speaker 1: the Constance Weather ruled discussion. It's more complex than that.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But if we boil it down to Constance, be weatheroled.
- 6:14Speaker 1: It's rare that picking the debutantes, which would be Weather ruled.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Feels like the safer option.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It feels like the lower risk play it to go
- 6:22Speaker 1: with Weather or do you feel like you know, I
- 6:23Speaker 1: know a bit more of what you're going to get
- 6:25Speaker 1: with Weatherorld, whereas Constance is the higher risk, potentially high
- 6:29Speaker 1: reward play. Like I can see you can see Sam
- 6:32Speaker 1: Constance if he was playing in the first Test at
- 6:34Speaker 1: Perth charging Joffra Archer in the second over the test
- 6:37Speaker 1: match shape, whether it's not going to do that, so
- 6:39Speaker 1: you are getting you know, you are getting a higher risk,
- 6:43Speaker 1: high reward with Constance in that he could play an
- 6:45Speaker 1: innings that turns the entire series, like he did at
- 6:48Speaker 1: the MCG against Boomra. But Weatherorld is perhaps the safer
- 6:51Speaker 1: pair of hands for a long series.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Whether World has a decade's worth of experience in the
- 6:56Speaker 4: domestic circuit in all three formats, he has that under
- 6:58Speaker 4: his belt, which we've seen so many players make their
- 7:01Speaker 4: debut in their early thirties for Australia, I mean Michael
- 7:03Speaker 4: Hussey is an obvious example and absolutely nail it and
- 7:06Speaker 4: flourished from there because they.
- 7:07Speaker 6: Had that experience.
- 7:08Speaker 4: And whether he's very capable of having those match winning
- 7:11Speaker 4: knocks as well, just like Conscious. We just saw it
- 7:13Speaker 4: this week down in Tasmani. He got a runnable ninety
- 7:16Speaker 4: odd one player at the match to get tas Mania
- 7:18Speaker 4: a pretty thrilling win. It was largely down to his knock.
- 7:21Speaker 4: So he's more than capable of hitting a changing a
- 7:25Speaker 4: game in a session. Whether he's rampant or not. He's
- 7:27Speaker 4: a very darent player who can score quickly.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I'll talk more about Jack, whether or it's innings with
- 7:31Speaker 1: him later on to the bowlers. Now, with Cummins as injury,
- 7:35Speaker 1: it's looking increasingly likely that Cummins won't be fit for
- 7:39Speaker 1: the First Test, so they'll probably have four quicks in
- 7:42Speaker 1: that first Test squad. Three of them pick themselves Stark,
- 7:45Speaker 1: Hazelwood and Bowlands. The fourth looks to be open and
- 7:49Speaker 1: Fergus O'Neil, who he flagged before the summer, five for
- 7:52Speaker 1: twenty six in a match the where Scottboland also got
- 7:55Speaker 1: five wickets. We know how good Scott Boland is, but
- 7:57Speaker 1: Fergus's first inning spell was fantastic.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Well, the thing that's working in Fergus's favor is he's
- 8:03Speaker 4: actually fit. So many of those other candidates are nursing
- 8:06Speaker 4: some sort of problem. Sewn abbot during this round of
- 8:08Speaker 4: Shield damaged the webbing in his hand and he's.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Just played to be subbed out of a Shield match right.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Injury exactly, and as part of that he now needs
- 8:15Speaker 4: to serve a mandatory twelve day stand down, so he's
- 8:17Speaker 4: out of action at the moment. Brendan Doggett hasn't played
- 8:20Speaker 4: in any Shield cricket yet, even just today Ben DWARFSHWSS has been.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Ruled out of the odies.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Not that he was really an Ash's candidate to begin with,
- 8:26Speaker 4: but all of these other players who were a chance
- 8:29Speaker 4: of playing are not available the moment.
- 8:31Speaker 5: I'm not proving themselves, folks and Neil five wicket haul.
- 8:34Speaker 5: Will he be picked for Perth?
- 8:36Speaker 4: I wouldn't think so because I think his bowling style
- 8:37Speaker 4: will be more suited for the pinkball Test the Gabba,
- 8:40Speaker 4: his home ground of the mcg If going horses for courses,
- 8:44Speaker 4: he's probably more likely for those tests. He could be
- 8:46Speaker 4: in the squad as a backup. Potentially.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Does he have the pace for Perth? Though not exactly.
- 8:51Speaker 4: He's high one twenties, low one thirties damaging bowler.
- 8:54Speaker 5: You don't need pace to be damaging bowler.
- 8:56Speaker 4: In Perth, but I'd see them leaning more towards an
- 8:59Speaker 4: Abbott a dog at someone who has a bit more experienced,
- 9:02Speaker 4: a bit more pace and has been around the Test
- 9:04Speaker 4: squad for a bit more over the last twenty four months.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah, those guys don't appear to be available yet for Perth,
- 9:09Speaker 1: So yeah, this whole summer. If with the injury cloud overcomings,
- 9:14Speaker 1: there's an injury to bowl and Stark or Hazelwood, that
- 9:16Speaker 1: could be big trouble for Australia, especially like Hazelwood hasn't played,
- 9:19Speaker 1: has barely played a five Test summer in the last
- 9:22Speaker 1: ten years, could be trouble for Australia. On the spinning front,
- 9:27Speaker 1: Mitch Swepson did fantastically well for Adelaide, career best haul
- 9:31Speaker 1: ten wickets. If something was to happen to Nathan Lyon,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I think Mitch Swepson could be in the frame, especially.
- 9:37Speaker 2: For that Adelaide Test.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Adelaide being a day Test this year, not the pink
- 9:41Speaker 1: ball day nighter, and spin has played a big factor
- 9:44Speaker 1: in the Shield matches at Adelaide Oval so far this year,
- 9:46Speaker 1: if line will get picked for all five tests, if
- 9:49Speaker 1: he's fit, and I can't see Australia going with two spinners,
- 9:52Speaker 1: but the neck line is closer to forty than he
- 9:55Speaker 1: years thirty. So if something was to happen to Nathan Lyon,
- 9:58Speaker 1: I think miss Swepson is right in the for that
- 10:01Speaker 1: next in line spot at the moment, especially in Australia
- 10:04Speaker 1: where perhaps the legies are more suited than saying Matt Cuoneman,
- 10:08Speaker 1: who's more suited to the subcontinent.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Well, certainly you look historically Sydney has been traditionally the
- 10:13Speaker 4: spinning wicket.
- 10:14Speaker 5: It doesn't seem to be that way.
- 10:16Speaker 2: It was seeming all over the place the.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Last few times I've tried to beg a second spinner
- 10:19Speaker 4: Ashtonago I think of a few years ago, and so
- 10:20Speaker 4: that's goo they haven't really done terribly well. But now
- 10:22Speaker 4: it looks like Adelaide might be that new pitch. Obviously
- 10:25Speaker 4: we don't know exactly what the pitch is going to
- 10:27Speaker 4: be like for the Ashes, but certainly there's a chance
- 10:29Speaker 4: there On Swepson, big fan of swepts, love a leg spinner.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I want him playing more Test cricket. I don't see
- 10:35Speaker 4: it being in Australia though, however, put him down flag
- 10:38Speaker 4: him for the twenty twenty seven Border Gabska Trophy in India.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I'd love to see him in that squad over there.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I think he could do some real damage for if
- 10:46Speaker 4: there was an injury to Nathan Lyon, I think they're
- 10:49Speaker 4: more likely to go for Corey. Rocacholi and off spinner
- 10:52Speaker 4: gets a lot of success on bouncing decks in Australia.
- 10:55Speaker 5: He's been the leading wicket.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Takeer among spinners the last couple of years in Shield
- 10:59Speaker 4: tough On Cooneman, tough On Todd Murphy, who have both
- 11:01Speaker 4: played Test cricket this year. Even but I see Rocket
- 11:04Speaker 4: to Holi it was being more likely if there was
- 11:06Speaker 4: God forbid an injury toneath the line.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I liked the Rocketcharlie call as well. Great spin
- 11:11Speaker 1: stocks in Australia at the moment. Coming up, we speak
- 11:15Speaker 1: to the man on everybody's lips, Jake Weatherorld and Ashes contender.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Nobody has scored more runs in the Shefferd Shield in
- 11:21Speaker 1: the last twelve months than this man, Jake Weather or
- 11:24Speaker 1: Jake thanks so much for joining us.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Welcome.
- 11:27Speaker 6: Oh thank that me, guys. Cheers.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Now we'll get onto your excellent innings against Western Australia shortly,
- 11:32Speaker 1: but we have to start with that crazy finish to
- 11:35Speaker 1: the match. On the last morning, you guys went in,
- 11:38Speaker 1: you needed two wickets, WA needed forty odd runs, WA
- 11:41Speaker 1: needed seven runs and you guys still needed two wickets.
- 11:44Speaker 2: But you're one. Just talk us through that morning.
- 11:47Speaker 6: Yeah, it was a pretty dramatic finished through fair It
- 11:49Speaker 6: was awesome.
- 11:49Speaker 3: That's what live sports all about and professional sport's all about.
- 11:52Speaker 6: So yeah, it was. We probably thought were out of
- 11:57Speaker 6: the game.
- 11:57Speaker 3: When they were cruising away there at like five, not
- 12:00Speaker 3: for nearly the score, and then we got a couple
- 12:02Speaker 3: of wickets and then we thought were right on top,
- 12:04Speaker 3: and then yeah, we probably went into that final day
- 12:07Speaker 3: thinking we'll probably a good chance to win this. The
- 12:09Speaker 3: bowls are refreshed. But to their credit, that bowl that
- 12:12Speaker 3: battered really well. Curtis batted really well and so did
- 12:16Speaker 3: Rock as well. But at the same time, and you
- 12:18Speaker 3: only you know, you only need two wickets, you just
- 12:20Speaker 3: never feel out of it.
- 12:21Speaker 6: And thankfully had.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Very two high class bowlers you could bowl right at
- 12:24Speaker 3: the end there and it snake two wickets, But yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 3: it was full of drama, which is great.
- 12:29Speaker 4: As is often the case down in Hobart. It was
- 12:31Speaker 4: obviously dominated by the seamers early. I don't think anyone
- 12:34Speaker 4: got a fifty in the first innings. Then you came
- 12:36Speaker 4: out and got a runnaball ninety odd which in the
- 12:38Speaker 4: end obviously proved the difference between the two sides. You
- 12:40Speaker 4: have to talk us through that innings and what went
- 12:43Speaker 4: well for you that day.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the Wicked always gets better. I'm not
- 12:46Speaker 3: gonna not going to say that it was the same
- 12:48Speaker 3: as the first innings. It was tough for everyone on
- 12:50Speaker 3: the first day and a bit wickt definitely hardened up
- 12:53Speaker 3: a bit. There was a few diibots, but at the
- 12:54Speaker 3: same time you've got a bit more award for your shots.
- 12:58Speaker 3: And yeah, I just sort of took some took some
- 13:00Speaker 3: percentage risks, obviously square the wicket, try to make sure
- 13:03Speaker 3: I'll impose myself on the bowling and make sure i
- 13:05Speaker 3: put someone pressure on and making feel as though they
- 13:07Speaker 3: can't shit a spot where I feel as though they
- 13:09Speaker 3: could be more challenging. They were some high class bowlers there,
- 13:12Speaker 3: so it was just about putting pressure on them early
- 13:14Speaker 3: my innings, and then from there just trying to trying
- 13:17Speaker 3: to give back any good balls, but if they bowled
- 13:19Speaker 3: any bad balls, trying to put them away, and even
- 13:21Speaker 3: if they bowled some good balls, trying to put pressure
- 13:23Speaker 3: on them as well too.
- 13:24Speaker 6: So thankfully it worked out. Yeah, it was. It was
- 13:27Speaker 6: fun to be out there and contribute the way I did.
- 13:30Speaker 1: So, Yeah, ninety four from ninety nine balls when you
- 13:34Speaker 1: got out there, when you walked out to bat, I
- 13:35Speaker 1: think the top scorer in that game to that point
- 13:37Speaker 1: was something like forty two.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Was it a.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Deliberate approach to go at something like a run and
- 13:41Speaker 1: ball thinking that the pitch was a little bit tricky
- 13:44Speaker 1: or did that just happen naturally.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I think it's a little bit of both, but probably
- 13:51Speaker 3: mainly just the fact that the ground itself is quite
- 13:53Speaker 3: high scoring, quick scoring anyway, maybe a high scoring but
- 13:56Speaker 3: quick scoring so and when when the conditions of bowl
- 13:59Speaker 3: of friendly does open up opportunities to score. So I
- 14:02Speaker 3: probably took my chances a little bit, especially outside of stump.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Probably wouldn't look to be as aggressive outside of stump
- 14:08Speaker 3: early meetings as I normally am normally do, but I
- 14:10Speaker 3: sort of said, well, you know, this is opportunity to score,
- 14:13Speaker 3: and with the way the week it was playing, it
- 14:15Speaker 3: was the best opportunity to put some pressure back on.
- 14:17Speaker 3: So for me it was just, yeah, take your opportunities
- 14:20Speaker 3: outside of stump and then if they got straight, trying
- 14:22Speaker 3: to hurt them through the lead side, anything short, trying
- 14:24Speaker 3: to tuck into that as well. But the wicket itself
- 14:27Speaker 3: was definitely getting a little bit better. But yeah, it's
- 14:29Speaker 3: just sort a bit more of a positive approach and
- 14:31Speaker 3: at high schooling high fast going ground which helps as well.
- 14:35Speaker 4: A couple of years ago, you obviously made the decision
- 14:37Speaker 4: to move down to Tasmania, which has proven.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Quite fruitful so far.
- 14:40Speaker 4: You're having to talk us through why he came to
- 14:42Speaker 4: that decision, and you know, how has life been done
- 14:45Speaker 4: in TASMANI it seemed to be absolutely loving it down
- 14:47Speaker 4: and Bell re.
- 14:48Speaker 6: Yeah, I love batting down Man.
- 14:50Speaker 3: It's obviously one of the best batting strips going around
- 14:52Speaker 3: for white ball and red ball. It can have their
- 14:54Speaker 3: challenges as early in the game, but also there's a
- 14:58Speaker 3: lot of high value there as a batter, a lot
- 14:59Speaker 3: of run down there now, So I love being there.
- 15:01Speaker 6: I love playing there. The community down there is great.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Obviously my club side I really enjoyed playing for as
- 15:06Speaker 3: well King Bra I've basically close friends. It's just a
- 15:10Speaker 3: small town, country vibe sort of thing, so similar where
- 15:13Speaker 3: I was back when I'm back back lived in Darwin.
- 15:15Speaker 3: You just sort of enjoy being around your own coffee
- 15:17Speaker 3: spots and all that stuff. And the move came because
- 15:20Speaker 3: I wanted a bit of a fresh start. It wasn't
- 15:22Speaker 3: anything towards South Australia. I think they've done so much
- 15:26Speaker 3: great for the great things for me, but at the
- 15:28Speaker 3: same time I was looking for a fresh start and
- 15:31Speaker 3: fresh perspective on my career and thankfully they were able
- 15:34Speaker 3: to let me go and I'm able to, you know,
- 15:37Speaker 3: go on and do different things now and play cricket
- 15:40Speaker 3: in another state which has been called.
- 15:42Speaker 1: It might be the first person that was to say
- 15:43Speaker 1: TASMANI is similar to Darwin. Jake certainly not in terms
- 15:46Speaker 1: of climate, they're.
- 15:47Speaker 6: Not, definitely not.
- 15:48Speaker 1: What has clicked with your batting in the last twelve
- 15:51Speaker 1: months Sheffield she had leading run scorer last year. It
- 15:53Speaker 1: just seems like your batting has gone to a new level.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Can you put your finger on what's just gone right
- 15:57Speaker 1: for you.
- 16:00Speaker 3: I think it's just, you know, the fact that we've
- 16:01Speaker 3: got such an awesome first class cricket system, and the
- 16:04Speaker 3: fact that you know, we've got great coaches within our country,
- 16:06Speaker 3: and and the conditions and the players you play against.
- 16:09Speaker 6: You just naturally get better as you as more cricket
- 16:12Speaker 6: you play.
- 16:12Speaker 3: And I'm very fortunate to have played against some really
- 16:15Speaker 3: great cricket, has played with some great cricketers, and to
- 16:17Speaker 3: learn and to absorb all that stuff, and I just
- 16:20Speaker 3: I feel like my age is getting to a point
- 16:22Speaker 3: now where I'm in my prime.
- 16:23Speaker 6: I'm playing good cricket. I've learned lots, and I've done.
- 16:27Speaker 3: My study, as some would say, and now I'm just
- 16:30Speaker 3: in a position where I understand what I need to
- 16:32Speaker 3: do to make runs in first class cricket and hopefully
- 16:34Speaker 3: that's transferable to the next level. But at the same time,
- 16:36Speaker 3: I feel like in a good place, and I've been
- 16:38Speaker 3: very lucky to have such a long period in domestic
- 16:42Speaker 3: cricket and to be able to serve my time and
- 16:44Speaker 3: learn a lot from some awesome coaches and players.
- 16:48Speaker 4: You mentioned it just there, But there's of course a
- 16:50Speaker 4: Nash series just around the corner. And there's a spot
- 16:52Speaker 4: up for grabs potentially at the top of the order.
- 16:54Speaker 4: You mentioned that ahead of this summer, before the summer
- 16:57Speaker 4: got on the way that the national sector has reached
- 16:58Speaker 4: out to you and said that you know, if runs
- 17:00Speaker 4: continued flowing, the chances would come. Have they reached out
- 17:03Speaker 4: to you at all since in the past few weeks.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Have they given any indication of what you need to
- 17:07Speaker 4: do to be in the frame for that Perth test.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Oh, there's definitely we've We've had some correspondence. Nothing, nothing
- 17:15Speaker 3: more than just talking about my batting. Nothing about technical
- 17:19Speaker 3: stuff or what's going to happen or selection, nothing about that.
- 17:22Speaker 3: It's just you know, you're moving well, you look like
- 17:24Speaker 3: your gains in good order. Just keep keep being simple
- 17:28Speaker 3: and walking out there and doing the same things, and
- 17:30Speaker 3: if the opportunity is there, you know you're going to
- 17:33Speaker 3: take it.
- 17:33Speaker 6: So I think it's nothing more than that.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Has been pretty pretty simplistic, nothing too complicated, Just keep
- 17:39Speaker 3: making doing the things you're doing now and hopefully opportunity arises.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Really, the way you back Jake with your strike rate
- 17:46Speaker 1: is just about the best strike rate in the Sheffield
- 17:48Speaker 1: She would for an opener, do you feel like that
- 17:50Speaker 1: gives you a real edge over some of the other
- 17:53Speaker 1: contenders and you can potentially be that guy. Not to
- 17:56Speaker 1: compare you to David Wanner, but you can play in
- 17:58Speaker 1: a similar way keeping that strike great up.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's certainly what my strength is and
- 18:06Speaker 3: why I think that people are talking about it. But
- 18:09Speaker 3: at the same time, the players that are also being
- 18:12Speaker 3: chatted out have their own styles and the way I
- 18:13Speaker 3: want to go about things, and I'm sure, you know,
- 18:16Speaker 3: if they got the opportunity.
- 18:17Speaker 6: That would take it as well.
- 18:17Speaker 3: But at the same time, yeah, that's what I probably
- 18:19Speaker 3: bring to the table and compare to other players, and
- 18:22Speaker 3: hopefully that's the way they want to go, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 3: be an awesome opportunity to about the top of the
- 18:26Speaker 3: order and be a part of the great team and
- 18:28Speaker 3: some amazing players. But yeah, I'm not sure if that's
- 18:31Speaker 3: going to get me over the line or not, but
- 18:33Speaker 3: you know, I think it's the way it runs, and
- 18:34Speaker 3: hopefully the way I do it helps me a little bit.
- 18:37Speaker 4: And you were involved in the One Day Cup game yesterday.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Was that a management thing? Was that a selection thing?
- 18:42Speaker 4: Whyn't you out there for the game yesterday?
- 18:46Speaker 3: Yeah, we sort of I've worked closely with Tazzy to
- 18:49Speaker 3: sort of just prioritize certain formats of the game when
- 18:52Speaker 3: I can and sort of get make sure that I'm
- 18:55Speaker 3: in the right frame for Sheld cricket. And I feel
- 18:57Speaker 3: as though that if I'm playing too much white ball
- 18:59Speaker 3: cricket sometimes my game can be compromised.
- 19:01Speaker 6: A little bit.
- 19:01Speaker 3: But in general, you know, I played the first two
- 19:03Speaker 3: one days leading into the Red Bull season and got
- 19:06Speaker 3: me ready to face some good high class bowling. Obviously
- 19:09Speaker 3: played some good teams leading in, but then yet during
- 19:13Speaker 3: shield games. I like to have a bit of a
- 19:14Speaker 3: break between Shiel games just so that I can prepare
- 19:16Speaker 3: the way I need to to get ready for Red
- 19:18Speaker 3: Bull cricket, which has been awesome from Tazzy.
- 19:20Speaker 6: That's why you know, I extended my contract with them.
- 19:23Speaker 3: They've been so supportive in the way they go about
- 19:25Speaker 3: their program, and the coach there, Jeff Forrn, and the
- 19:27Speaker 3: whole management team there has been awesome with me. And
- 19:30Speaker 3: also just you know, as a player, you want to
- 19:32Speaker 3: make sure that you're fresh and ready to go mentally
- 19:33Speaker 3: and physically, so it's good.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it's prioritizing Redbell cricket is certainly working out for
- 19:39Speaker 1: you at the moment, Jake, in these last couple of
- 19:41Speaker 1: shield matches and the ones coming up. You're not naive
- 19:44Speaker 1: if you know that you're a contender for this ashes spot,
- 19:46Speaker 1: Is it difficult to sort.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Of compartmentalize it?
- 19:49Speaker 1: Or I know if I was in your position, I'd
- 19:51Speaker 1: be running off the ground checking the scorecards straight away.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Oh god, Manus has got another hundred? How are you
- 19:56Speaker 2: doing much of that? How's it been? Yeah?
- 19:59Speaker 3: Look, you know, as a as a sportsman, you're obviously
- 20:02Speaker 3: naturally competitive.
- 20:05Speaker 6: That's just the way you are as people.
- 20:06Speaker 3: When you want to you want to bet everyone that
- 20:08Speaker 3: you play against or competing against.
- 20:10Speaker 6: But at the same time, like I know, that doesn't
- 20:12Speaker 6: really serve me that much.
- 20:13Speaker 3: It doesn't serve my career, It doesn't serve what's going
- 20:15Speaker 3: to happen in my future and in terms of what's
- 20:17Speaker 3: going to happen in the Australian team or how many
- 20:19Speaker 3: runs I'm going to make, And it's only going to
- 20:20Speaker 3: add confusion to me. So for me, it's just, you know,
- 20:23Speaker 3: try to rock up and just shut it out and
- 20:25Speaker 3: just enjoy batting and try to be as competitive I
- 20:27Speaker 3: can out in the field with the people I'm playing against,
- 20:30Speaker 3: and then when you know, whatever happens happens. I can't
- 20:33Speaker 3: control me runs I'm going to make. I can't control
- 20:35Speaker 3: what I do when I'm on the field. But if
- 20:37Speaker 3: my mindset's in the right place and I'm consistent with
- 20:40Speaker 3: that off the field, I know I can walk into
- 20:41Speaker 3: games and be fresh and ready to compete and not
- 20:44Speaker 3: be daunted by things that probably don't serve me very much.
- 20:46Speaker 4: So and obviously this summer Joffer Archer and Mark Wood
- 20:51Speaker 4: are going to be steaming in plenty of water to
- 20:53Speaker 4: go on the bridge. But how do you feel about
- 20:54Speaker 4: the potential challenge of coming up against them this summer
- 20:57Speaker 4: on some bouncy decks across the country.
- 21:00Speaker 6: Yeah, it's going to be exciting to be fair.
- 21:02Speaker 3: You know, facing high, fast, high pace bowlers is always
- 21:05Speaker 3: a challenge, and again boating in Australia is one of
- 21:08Speaker 3: the best places to do it.
- 21:09Speaker 6: It's got consistent bounce with and plenty of reward as well.
- 21:13Speaker 3: So from a batting point of view, I'm just going
- 21:14Speaker 3: to see it as a great opportunity to score all
- 21:17Speaker 3: around the ground. Obviously, square the wicket is where I
- 21:19Speaker 3: love scoring, so I think those guy it's going to
- 21:21Speaker 3: be a great challenge, but at the same time, I
- 21:23Speaker 3: feel as my games in a place where I can
- 21:25Speaker 3: hopefully put some pressure back on them as well and
- 21:27Speaker 3: use their pace to my advantage.
- 21:29Speaker 1: You have the chance to be one of the first
- 21:31Speaker 1: fully fledged cricketers from the Northern Territory to play for Australia.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Damien Martin spent a few years there but moved to
- 21:38Speaker 1: Western Australia when he was pretty young. You spent a
- 21:40Speaker 1: lot of time there. What would it mean to you
- 21:41Speaker 1: to represent the NT on the big stage.
- 21:44Speaker 6: Yeah, it it'd be awesome.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I think I'd just be so cool just to to
- 21:49Speaker 3: reflect it when I was a kid. Obviously, growing up
- 21:51Speaker 3: you never had you know, you had your club role
- 21:53Speaker 3: models and the people that played club cricket, but you
- 21:55Speaker 3: never had any great representation in the in the international
- 21:58Speaker 3: domestic scene. To a spy too, and you know that's
- 22:01Speaker 3: something that you compete against with the AFL. Obviously they've
- 22:03Speaker 3: got some great players that have come from the territory.
- 22:05Speaker 3: But for me, it was to be able to provide
- 22:07Speaker 3: that for some kids back time would be awesome boys
- 22:10Speaker 3: and girls there, to be able to vide the show
- 22:12Speaker 3: that there's a pathway from playing the INNT, which is
- 22:15Speaker 3: obviously quite a small pace place relatively and probably a
- 22:18Speaker 3: long long way away from from a different paths for
- 22:21Speaker 3: Australia and a long way away from you know, what's
- 22:22Speaker 3: going on the rest of the world. It provides a
- 22:25Speaker 3: bit of a pathway for kids and I hope that
- 22:28Speaker 3: represent that, and it'd be cool for me to represent
- 22:32Speaker 3: the territory and show that, you know, there's some great
- 22:34Speaker 3: players that can come from there if you give them
- 22:36Speaker 3: the chance.
- 22:37Speaker 4: And crick Australia has flagged the potential of Darwin hosting
- 22:40Speaker 4: a Test match next year potentially obviously still a few
- 22:44Speaker 4: things to saw it out there, but what would it
- 22:46Speaker 4: mean for the Darwin and Northern Territory to host a
- 22:48Speaker 4: Test match? And I think that my timelines right here.
- 22:50Speaker 4: But were you potentially there for the most recent test?
- 22:52Speaker 4: I think it was about twenty odd years ago the
- 22:54Speaker 4: last time Darwin hosted a Test match.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I was there.
- 22:57Speaker 3: I was there, I was there, I met obviously got
- 23:00Speaker 3: to meet people that end up idolizing and that that
- 23:03Speaker 3: experience for me probably drove a lot of my abition
- 23:07Speaker 3: to play for Australia and not having the experience a
- 23:09Speaker 3: lot of kids for so long is it's probably stunted
- 23:11Speaker 3: a little bit of growth up there in terms of
- 23:13Speaker 3: having real life people that you can physically touch and
- 23:16Speaker 3: talk to and having having international cricket round done when
- 23:20Speaker 3: it's probably stunted maybe cricket up there a little bit.
- 23:23Speaker 3: But my experience was I've got to be around Brettley
- 23:26Speaker 3: and Jason Gillespie and Darren Lehman and stuff like that,
- 23:28Speaker 3: people that I got to watch on TV and then
- 23:30Speaker 3: actually speak to them and get photos with them and
- 23:32Speaker 3: stuff like.
- 23:32Speaker 6: That was an amazing experience.
- 23:34Speaker 3: And to be able to hopefully provide that for some
- 23:36Speaker 3: kids back home, and even if I'm not a part
- 23:38Speaker 3: of it, just to just to see test cricket back
- 23:40Speaker 3: there would be great for the kids. I don't know
- 23:42Speaker 3: how much they love it up there, and they just
- 23:43Speaker 3: start with the staff of high quality cricket and you
- 23:46Speaker 3: saw in the T twenty series against South Africa that
- 23:49Speaker 3: you know they love their cricket up there. They would
- 23:51Speaker 3: feel that stadiums up there, and people didn't think that
- 23:55Speaker 3: was possible considering it's such a fully dominated place, So
- 23:57Speaker 3: to be up there would be great and great for
- 23:59Speaker 3: the kids well, you.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Are doing great work representing the Northern Territory and of
- 24:03Speaker 1: course Tasmania at the moment.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Jake, thanks so much for joining us.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Good luck for whatever cricket is ahead of you in
- 24:08Speaker 1: the next month or so.
- 24:10Speaker 6: Alwise, thank you jeers guys,
