- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, it's we're back on normal.
- 0:06Speaker 2: So normal it's taking for when the news kids weird.
- 0:08Speaker 3: I am Mary Kaffers.
- 0:09Speaker 4: And I am Carol Markolitz. How are you doing, Mary Catherine.
- 0:13Speaker 5: We're doing all right.
- 0:14Speaker 2: We're having quite a week.
- 0:15Speaker 5: Two kids with croup.
- 0:17Speaker 1: One dog had surgery because the allegedly smartest dog on
- 0:20Speaker 1: the planet ate a microfiber towel.
- 0:23Speaker 2: So he lost his crown. He lost his crown.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Sometimes smart people and dogs do not so smart things.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It's fine, We're fine, fine, we're getting through it. We're
- 0:36Speaker 2: getting through it all right. Dog's doing well, So we
- 0:39Speaker 2: got that going forward.
- 0:40Speaker 4: We're rooting for the dog. Hoping the kids feel better soon.
- 0:42Speaker 4: And hope you're doing Hope you're holding up over there.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah, we're all right.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Well, we've got sort of a California heavy episode of
- 0:51Speaker 4: both of our first topics touch on it. Katie Porter
- 0:55Speaker 4: is the front runner to be the Democratic nominee for
- 0:58Speaker 4: the governor of California. She's poised to take.
- 1:01Speaker 6: Over from Gavin and she was having what could only
- 1:05Speaker 6: be described as a fairly softball interview at CBS when
- 1:10Speaker 6: she completely lost her mind.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Let's roll that clip.
- 1:13Speaker 7: What do you say to the forty percent of California
- 1:15Speaker 7: voters who you'll need.
- 1:16Speaker 8: In order to win, who voted for Trump.
- 1:20Speaker 9: How would I need them in order to win?
- 1:21Speaker 7: Man, Well, unless you think you're going to get sixty
- 1:24Speaker 7: percent of the vote, you think you'll get sixty percent?
- 1:27Speaker 7: All everybody who did not vote for Trump will vote
- 1:29Speaker 7: for you, that's what you're.
- 1:30Speaker 9: In a general election. Yes, if it is me versus
- 1:33Speaker 9: a Republican, I think that I will win the people
- 1:36Speaker 9: who did not vote for Trump.
- 1:37Speaker 8: And if it's you versus another Democrat.
- 1:39Speaker 9: I don't intend that to be the case.
- 1:41Speaker 8: So how do you not intend that to be the case?
- 1:43Speaker 8: Do you? Are you going to ask them not to run?
- 1:46Speaker 9: No? No, I'm saying I'm going to build the support. I
- 1:48Speaker 9: have the support already in terms of name recognition, and
- 1:50Speaker 9: so I'm going to do the very best I can
- 1:52Speaker 9: to make sure that we get through this primary in
- 1:54Speaker 9: a really strong position. But let me be clear with you.
- 1:56Speaker 9: I represented Orange County. I represented a purple area. I
- 2:00Speaker 9: have stood on my own two feet and one Republican
- 2:02Speaker 9: votes before. That's not something every candidate in this race
- 2:05Speaker 9: can say. If you're from a deep blue area, if
- 2:07Speaker 9: you're from LA or you're from Oakland, you don't have
- 2:10Speaker 9: an experience.
- 2:11Speaker 8: You just said you don't need those Trump voters.
- 2:13Speaker 9: Well, you asked me if I need them to win?
- 2:15Speaker 8: You don't.
- 2:15Speaker 9: I think like this is unnecessarily argumentative. What is your question?
- 2:19Speaker 7: The question is the same thing I asked everybody that
- 2:22Speaker 7: this is being called the empowering voters to stop Trump's
- 2:26Speaker 7: power grab. Every other candidate has answered this question.
- 2:28Speaker 9: This is not and I said I support it.
- 2:31Speaker 7: So and the question is what do you say to
- 2:33Speaker 7: the forty percent of voters who voted for Trump?
- 2:36Speaker 9: Oh, I'm happy to say that. It's the do you
- 2:38Speaker 9: need them to win? Part that I don't understand. I'm
- 2:40Speaker 9: happy to answer the question aswer. The question is you
- 2:42Speaker 9: haven't written and all answer.
- 2:43Speaker 7: And we've also asked the other candidates do you think
- 2:45Speaker 7: you need any of those forty percent of California voters
- 2:48Speaker 7: to win?
- 2:48Speaker 8: And you're saying no, you don't.
- 2:49Speaker 9: No, I'm saying I'm going to try to win every
- 2:51Speaker 9: vote I can. And what I'm saying to you.
- 2:54Speaker 8: Is that, well, to those voters, Okay, so you I.
- 2:57Speaker 9: Don't want to keep doing this. I'm going to call it.
- 2:59Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 3:02Speaker 8: You're not going to do the interview with them.
- 3:04Speaker 9: No, not like this. I'm not not with seven follow
- 3:06Speaker 9: ups to every single question you ask.
- 3:08Speaker 8: Every other candidate has.
- 3:09Speaker 9: I don't care. I don't care. I want to have
- 3:12Speaker 9: a pleasant, positive conversation which you asked me about every
- 3:15Speaker 9: issue on this list. And if every question you're going
- 3:18Speaker 9: to make up a follow up question, then we're never
- 3:20Speaker 9: going to get there and we're just going to circle away.
- 3:24Speaker 9: I've had to do this before ever.
- 3:26Speaker 7: You've never had to have an anmation. Okay, but every
- 3:31Speaker 7: other candidate has done this.
- 3:33Speaker 9: What part of I'm me? I'm reading for governor because
- 3:36Speaker 9: I'm a leader, So I am going to make so.
- 3:39Speaker 8: You're not going to answer questions from reporters. Okay, why
- 3:42Speaker 8: don't we go through.
- 3:43Speaker 7: I will continue to ask follow up questions because that's
- 3:45Speaker 7: my job as a journalist, but I will go through
- 3:47Speaker 7: and ask these and if you don't want to answer,
- 3:49Speaker 7: you don't want to answer, so nearly every legislative.
- 3:53Speaker 9: I don't want to have an unhappy experience with you,
- 3:56Speaker 9: and I don't want this all on camera.
- 3:57Speaker 7: I don't want to have an unhappy ax you either.
- 4:00Speaker 7: I would love to continue to ask these questions so
- 4:02Speaker 7: that we can show our viewers what every candidate feels
- 4:05Speaker 7: about every one of these issues that they care about,
- 4:08Speaker 7: and redistricting it's a massive issue. We're going to do
- 4:10Speaker 7: an entire story just on the responses to that question
- 4:13Speaker 7: and have asked everybody the same follow up question.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Hidden in that insanity was a normal answer that she
- 4:19Speaker 4: couldn't limit herself to.
- 4:22Speaker 10: It's crazy, it's so embarrassing this this person is so
- 4:28Speaker 10: insufferable and so soft. The action is the question is simply,
- 4:35Speaker 10: forty percent of Californians voted for Trump.
- 4:39Speaker 2: You're running to be governor.
- 4:41Speaker 1: You might end up in a head to head with
- 4:44Speaker 1: a Republican, but regardless, what what do you think about
- 4:48Speaker 1: reaching out to those people? It's just analytics their own race,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and she can't do it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Yeah, she's like, don't need them, don't need them. And
- 4:55Speaker 4: you know what, I sort of get what she's saying.
- 4:57Speaker 4: She's like, why would I need forty percent when I
- 4:59Speaker 4: can get the sixty percent? Because ma'am, you might not
- 5:01Speaker 4: win that whole sixty Like hello, and that's what this
- 5:03Speaker 4: very nice reporter was trying to explain to her, Like,
- 5:06Speaker 4: then you're going to need the entire sixty in order
- 5:10Speaker 4: to win, and she's like, I'm going to get the
- 5:11Speaker 4: entire sixty you know. I was telling this story to
- 5:13Speaker 4: somebody today and they were like, Oh, is that the
- 5:15Speaker 4: new CBS?
- 5:16Speaker 5: Like, no, it's the old CBS. It's that very wise CBS.
- 5:19Speaker 1: This is like, also, come on, I think this is
- 5:22Speaker 1: so revealing of the world in which California Democrats Democrats barely,
- 5:29Speaker 1: but California Democrats one state, one party rule in a state,
- 5:33Speaker 1: type of people in which they live, which is she
- 5:36Speaker 1: sees this reporter as her pr person.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 5: She's like, why are you messing up my moment?
- 5:41Speaker 2: She says, and she says, I've never had to do
- 5:44Speaker 2: this ever.
- 5:46Speaker 1: You've never had to answer follow up question, a clarified
- 5:50Speaker 1: follow up question, yeah, to a very easy question to
- 5:53Speaker 1: start with, so that that's betraying something. She then says
- 5:56Speaker 1: she wants to have a positive interaction with this person.
- 6:00Speaker 1: That's not the reporter's job. She's being perfectly pleasant, but
- 6:04Speaker 1: that is not her job. And then she says, I'm
- 6:08Speaker 1: calling it, ma'am. Do you know how a camera works.
- 6:11Speaker 5: I can't call it. What are you talking about? She like,
- 6:13Speaker 5: I don't want to do this on camera. You already
- 6:15Speaker 5: did you did it on camera. It's too late, too late.
- 6:19Speaker 2: This is just a I said this on Fox this morning.
- 6:23Speaker 2: This is the bare minimum for doing politics.
- 6:26Speaker 1: It's just you have to think about all the voters
- 6:29Speaker 1: and you have to just at least entertain how you
- 6:33Speaker 1: might talk to all of them.
- 6:35Speaker 5: They just don't know at all.
- 6:37Speaker 4: And it's so bad for them. I know, we talked
- 6:39Speaker 4: about this all the time. It is so bad for
- 6:42Speaker 4: the Democrats that they are never challenged because when they
- 6:44Speaker 4: are challenge and the most peaceful.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Calm way, they lose the plot.
- 6:51Speaker 4: I will say, though she is not known for being
- 6:53Speaker 4: peaceful or calm.
- 6:54Speaker 3: No.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Katie Porter's ex husband, who by the way, filed a
- 6:58Speaker 4: restraining order against her, says that she poured scalding mashed
- 7:02Speaker 4: potatoes on his head. Now, I know people say all
- 7:05Speaker 4: kinds of things when they're getting divorced, but that's pretty
- 7:08Speaker 4: darn specific.
- 7:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 1: She also famously berated at least one staffer for having
- 7:15Speaker 1: quote unquote given her COVID, and she goes real hard
- 7:19Speaker 1: in the texts on this poor woman, who I think
- 7:21Speaker 1: was breathed at.
- 7:22Speaker 2: The time or something.
- 7:22Speaker 1: There was something going on in that staffer's life, and
- 7:26Speaker 1: it's just brutal. And then I think we noted that
- 7:30Speaker 1: our friend Joshar got to I think two responses from
- 7:34Speaker 1: former Katie Porter staffers who were like, hey, imagine what
- 7:39Speaker 1: she's like with the cameras off.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Yeah, that lady. I mean, good luck California because she
- 7:44Speaker 4: is the front runner.
- 7:46Speaker 5: I do.
- 7:48Speaker 1: I think, like I always tell my kids that a
- 7:50Speaker 1: good attitude is like a huge part of succeeding in life.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And you know, you got to put a smile on
- 7:54Speaker 1: your face, you know, maybe and then they're going to
- 7:58Speaker 1: pull this video on me someday and be like, mom,
- 8:00Speaker 1: this woman became governor for.
- 8:02Speaker 4: You who knows when they were being the president of
- 8:05Speaker 4: the United States, you know, who knows how far she will?
- 8:08Speaker 5: Soar she was in the house.
- 8:10Speaker 1: By the way, She'm on that Purple County for not
- 8:13Speaker 1: sniffing her out.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Like come on, where was that?
- 8:18Speaker 1: And like, by the way, this is a real Iraq
- 8:19Speaker 1: Iran situation. But I enjoy that Adam Schiff snaked her
- 8:23Speaker 1: out of the senator position, which is the last thing
- 8:26Speaker 1: she ran for.
- 8:26Speaker 2: So she has lost before well she how it goes.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, look, I've always had a warm spot
- 8:33Speaker 4: for California. I you know, like I always like to
- 8:36Speaker 4: tell people, it used to be my plan B like
- 8:38Speaker 4: when New York. If New York would to go to shit,
- 8:40Speaker 4: I'd go to California.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Like what, that's a sweet thought, you summer child.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Yeah, so I love California.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I would love to see it be a normal place
- 8:52Speaker 4: with normal people, Yeah, living normally.
- 8:55Speaker 1: And it has so many normal people. And Steve Hilton
- 8:59Speaker 1: is the geoe. If there's other people in that primary
- 9:02Speaker 1: as well, it's a jungle primary, which means everything vote
- 9:05Speaker 1: for anyone in the primary, Democrat or Republican. Steve Hilton
- 9:09Speaker 1: is in their former Fox uh Fox. He's great, Yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 1: host and he's great. So that was the point that
- 9:15Speaker 1: this reporter was trying to make. It's like you might
- 9:17Speaker 1: not necessarily be up against it, right, right, and then
- 9:22Speaker 1: you have to do more work, right, And she was like,
- 9:24Speaker 1: you might be up to get a Democrat. And she's like, well,
- 9:26Speaker 1: I'm gonna make sure that doesn't happen.
- 9:27Speaker 5: Like how you can add.
- 9:30Speaker 1: By probably by being super mean to everyone and putting
- 9:32Speaker 1: mass potatoes.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Directing them with like cott mashed potatoes.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I just I I know this is.
- 9:38Speaker 4: Where we are, but what do better at California.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Peach what to peach that lady is.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Yeah, well, we're going to take a short break and
- 9:47Speaker 4: be right back with.
- 9:48Speaker 5: More on Normally.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Welcome back to Normally, where our second topic is political violence.
- 9:59Speaker 4: There seems to be a lot of.
- 10:00Speaker 5: It lately, and you know, people are kind of.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Losing the plot a little bit. And I know if
- 10:05Speaker 4: this is the second time I've used that phrase in
- 10:07Speaker 4: the last two segments, but it really feels like people
- 10:09Speaker 4: are losing it. A few days ago, a judge's home
- 10:13Speaker 4: exploded on a South Carolina island. She's a liberal South
- 10:18Speaker 4: Carolina judge, Diane Goodstein. Her home burnt to the ground,
- 10:22Speaker 4: her family barely escaped. Apparently she had gotten threats, although
- 10:26Speaker 4: we don't really know if that's true. A friend of mine,
- 10:29Speaker 4: who I like him a lot, and I'm not going
- 10:32Speaker 4: to call him out by name, but wrote to me
- 10:34Speaker 4: and said, a Jewish judge's home is burning in an
- 10:37Speaker 4: explosion that's been labeled Arsin less than a day after
- 10:39Speaker 4: Steven Miller tweeted that liberal judges are shielding an indirection
- 10:43Speaker 4: by left wing terrorists. Now you use your considerable platform
- 10:47Speaker 4: to condemn this, I was like, we don't even know
- 10:49Speaker 4: what happened, yet I like it could be a pre
- 10:50Speaker 4: Palestine lefty. We have no idea, Like, literally no idea
- 10:53Speaker 4: what happened here. I'm going to hold off and wait.
- 10:56Speaker 4: To my friend's credit, it turns out that it's not
- 10:59Speaker 4: oursin looks like it's not Arson, and he apologized, which
- 11:03Speaker 4: is the correct thing to do in that situation. But
- 11:06Speaker 4: this rush to judgment. Not everything that happens to political
- 11:11Speaker 4: figures is going to have a political motive. And I
- 11:14Speaker 4: think we're in a moment right now where the left
- 11:17Speaker 4: is really hoping that some right wingers do some crazy
- 11:20Speaker 4: things so that they can point to it and be like, see,
- 11:22Speaker 4: you guys have a problem too, But it is all
- 11:26Speaker 4: mostly coming from one side. And while you guys wait
- 11:30Speaker 4: to find that, here's a story from Mary Catherine about
- 11:33Speaker 4: yet another left is it?
- 11:35Speaker 1: It does seem at the moment this month, the demand
- 11:38Speaker 1: for right wing VI is outstripped, is really outstripping the supply,
- 11:43Speaker 1: And like, look, like you said, we could we could
- 11:45Speaker 1: see something different in the future, but this one, this
- 11:49Speaker 1: is from DC and I heard about this story, and
- 11:52Speaker 1: much like you, in the early going, I was like,
- 11:55Speaker 1: I'm not going to comment on that because it looks suspicious. Yeah,
- 11:58Speaker 1: but I don't know happened.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Here's what happened.
- 12:01Speaker 1: A man arrested outside the annual Red Mass ceremony held
- 12:05Speaker 1: at Saint Matthew's Cathedral in DC had over two hundred
- 12:07Speaker 1: explosive devices in a tent on the church's stairs. According
- 12:10Speaker 1: to police Lewis Gary forty one, touted homemade explosives when
- 12:14Speaker 1: officers approached him on the step ahead of the service,
- 12:16Speaker 1: typically attended by Supreme Court justices to ring in a
- 12:20Speaker 1: new term. Devices were find found inside his front pocket
- 12:24Speaker 1: and a backpack he was carrying on the scene, in
- 12:26Speaker 1: addition to a tent encampment set up in close proximity
- 12:29Speaker 1: to the cathedral, which side of the aisle likes tent encampments.
- 12:33Speaker 1: It turns out he's anti Scotus, anti Jew, anti Catholic.
- 12:40Speaker 2: It just like when we don't know a right winger,
- 12:45Speaker 2: when we don't know.
- 12:46Speaker 5: Pause, Yeah, when we do know, let's deal with it.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And this one seems particularly scary, as I believe last
- 12:53Speaker 1: year at the Red Mass, at least three Conservative justices
- 12:57Speaker 1: attended that mass. So if you're looking to do damage,
- 13:01Speaker 1: as we know that at least one other would be
- 13:03Speaker 1: assassin has been looking to do and has now been
- 13:06Speaker 1: sentenced to only eight years in prison. Yep, by the way,
- 13:11Speaker 1: just a little idea, maybe you're incentivizing more of this
- 13:14Speaker 1: by not punishing it very dramatically exactly.
- 13:17Speaker 2: So that's what's going on there, and I want to
- 13:20Speaker 2: add this to it.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Nancy Pelosi was on Dana Bash's show this week, asked
- 13:27Speaker 1: about j Jones's texts, and let's just hear the rousing
- 13:33Speaker 1: condemnations she had for that.
- 13:34Speaker 11: Should he get out of the race, that's up to
- 13:38Speaker 11: the people, the leaders in Virginia. They have said, he
- 13:43Speaker 11: has apologized. What I understand is they say that on
- 13:47Speaker 11: balance he's the better person to be attorney general. But
- 13:50Speaker 11: that's up to them. But I wish there would be
- 13:52Speaker 11: enough fuss of all the times that people have said
- 13:54Speaker 11: they were going to put a bullet in my head
- 13:56Speaker 11: right in public, in the public.
- 13:59Speaker 8: Because of that, which that's one of the reasons I
- 14:01Speaker 8: wanted to ask you that you are somebody who knows
- 14:04Speaker 8: all too well in in a horrific way, we.
- 14:07Speaker 11: Have to get rid of that kind of language. I mean,
- 14:09Speaker 11: it's just not appropriate.
- 14:10Speaker 9: If you were Abigail Spamberger, who's the Democrat running for
- 14:13Speaker 9: a governor, would you call on him to step beside?
- 14:15Speaker 11: But she has to do. She's going to be governor.
- 14:18Speaker 11: She's running very well. Everybody's very proud of her candidacy.
- 14:22Speaker 11: And her race is her race, and her state is
- 14:25Speaker 11: her state, and it's up to her. I really don't
- 14:28Speaker 11: get involved in other people's races.
- 14:30Speaker 4: That the mayor of New York that this of that.
- 14:32Speaker 11: It's up to the people in that state. I respect
- 14:34Speaker 11: their judgment and wish them well.
- 14:36Speaker 1: So yeah, Nancy just says, like, on balance, I think
- 14:39Speaker 1: he's probably better than the normy Republican AG.
- 14:42Speaker 2: That's what I've heard, so should be fine.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's totally fine. He just wants to
- 14:47Speaker 4: murder the children of his political opponents because the parents
- 14:51Speaker 4: were nice to moderate Democrats. I mean, it's just bananas.
- 14:57Speaker 4: As we're recording this, a man has been arrested for
- 15:00Speaker 4: setting the fires in California, A Florida man. Sorry, guys,
- 15:05Speaker 4: but we don't know his politics yet, although they are
- 15:08Speaker 4: chomping at a bit to be like, well, it's from Florida,
- 15:11Speaker 4: so he must be a conservative. But it really also
- 15:16Speaker 4: betrays the whole climate change set this fire and I
- 15:20Speaker 4: want to hear some people maybe apologize for that, or
- 15:23Speaker 4: you know, have some thoughts about not immediately jumping to
- 15:27Speaker 4: your issue of the moment in order to lay blame
- 15:30Speaker 4: for any natural disaster or horrific event. Take a pause,
- 15:36Speaker 4: take a beat, think it over, wait, refect. These are
- 15:40Speaker 4: all normal things to do when things go bad.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Take a pause. Twenty four hour rule.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Yeah, twenty four hour rules should actually be applied to everything.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Like when you get any kind of news, just give
- 15:51Speaker 4: it twenty four hours. You don't have to run with
- 15:53Speaker 4: us your version of events, right, Hey, yeah.
- 15:58Speaker 1: This happens on so many immigrant stories too, which I
- 16:01Speaker 1: look into all of them, right, because I am concerned
- 16:04Speaker 1: with Ice overstepping.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I am concerned with Trump doing things you shouldn't do, and.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Invariably outside of like two of them, you come across so.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Much more pertinent pertinent information. Oh.
- 16:17Speaker 1: By the way, two lefties were arrested for ramming ice
- 16:20Speaker 1: vehicles in the Chicago area and they were let out
- 16:24Speaker 1: on veail.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Right, And there's a story that's what they didn't step
- 16:30Speaker 3: in to help Ice, And that is really a misuse
- 16:34Speaker 3: of you know, government officials telling police to stand down
- 16:39Speaker 3: because they're anti ice.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Your political opinion shouldn't be involved with who the police
- 16:45Speaker 4: step into help. I think it's just atrocious Governor Pritzkers
- 16:49Speaker 4: using the police in a manner that I think people
- 16:52Speaker 4: are afraid that Donald Trump will use the police. And
- 16:55Speaker 4: you know it is so irony there as.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Well wait for your info.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Yeah not, that's all right. We'll be right back with
- 17:03Speaker 4: more on normally where a Supreme Court case this should
- 17:06Speaker 4: be wrapping up in the next day or two on
- 17:09Speaker 4: the question of conversion therapy, but who's doing the converting.
- 17:13Speaker 4: We'll be right back. We are back on normally where
- 17:19Speaker 4: the Child's versus Sala's our case is winding its way
- 17:23Speaker 4: through the Supreme Court.
- 17:24Speaker 5: You know it's funny.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Why is Colorado the place where court cases involving free
- 17:29Speaker 4: speech and religious freedom seemed to be the norm. I mean,
- 17:33Speaker 4: there's the master Piece Cake Shop case, where of course
- 17:36Speaker 4: Jack Phillips was forced or you know, they wanted to
- 17:39Speaker 4: force him to bake the cake. There was also a
- 17:43Speaker 4: website designer who didn't want to make websites for same
- 17:46Speaker 4: sex marriages because it violated her religious freedom. Supreme Court
- 17:50Speaker 4: ruled in her favor on that. And now Kayleie childs
- 17:54Speaker 4: as a therapist in Colorado, and she's at the center
- 17:56Speaker 4: of this case because she's a devout Christian and people
- 18:00Speaker 4: seek out her services because of her faith to talk
- 18:04Speaker 4: to their children who are having gender dysphoria.
- 18:07Speaker 1: It's disturbing that the people of Colorado, people of faith
- 18:10Speaker 1: in Colorado, which is like used to be a normy state,
- 18:14Speaker 1: they have to go to the Supreme Court.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Like every time things settled.
- 18:17Speaker 1: She's like, can I do my job? I don't know,
- 18:20Speaker 1: Let's go to the Supreme Court and figure it out.
- 18:22Speaker 8: No.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I think this is like, this is one of those
- 18:25Speaker 1: tricky issues where a lot of places banned, say like
- 18:29Speaker 1: faith based conversion therapy for young gay kids, right or
- 18:35Speaker 1: for gay miners, right, And they would say that you
- 18:37Speaker 1: can't do that anymore. And it is an unpopular opinion.
- 18:40Speaker 1: But I've always thought that was a First Amendment issue
- 18:43Speaker 1: because if you aren't allowed to talk about this possibility
- 18:47Speaker 1: versus another possibility, isn't that viewpoint discrimination And doesn't it
- 18:52Speaker 1: cut against people of faith in particular. So now we're
- 18:57Speaker 1: going to be testing it, at least in this in
- 19:00Speaker 1: this gender related area.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I have a column on this. I
- 19:04Speaker 4: think it should be out today Thursday in the New
- 19:07Speaker 4: York Post. But I actually say that there is not
- 19:10Speaker 4: a lot of evidence that you can convert people out
- 19:14Speaker 4: of being gay. So it really is a different thing,
- 19:17Speaker 4: because there's a lot of evidence that you can convert kids,
- 19:20Speaker 4: or not convert, but basically talk to them into accepting
- 19:23Speaker 4: them their bodies as is. And there's a lot of
- 19:27Speaker 4: evidence that kids do outgrow that gender dysphoria. Kids don't
- 19:31Speaker 4: outgrow when they declare themselves gay. They generally don't outgrow that.
- 19:35Speaker 4: So those are really two different things. The other thing
- 19:37Speaker 4: is I think when people hear conversion therapy, I picture
- 19:41Speaker 4: the electroshock therapy of the sixties and seventies, Yeah, which
- 19:44Speaker 4: also didn't work. So this is not that she's talking
- 19:50Speaker 4: to kids and making them accept their bodies as is,
- 19:54Speaker 4: which is really what we should want, right, I mean,
- 19:57Speaker 4: So in this case, Justice Sonya Soto, my you are
- 20:00Speaker 4: compared it to a dietitian telling an anorexic patient to
- 20:05Speaker 4: engage in more restricted eating. But in my view, it's
- 20:08Speaker 4: the dietitian in this example is are all the therapists
- 20:12Speaker 4: who are telling these children that they are not in
- 20:16Speaker 4: the correct body and that they could take hormones, and
- 20:18Speaker 4: they can have surgery, and they could do all these
- 20:20Speaker 4: things to change their birth gender. You can't change that.
- 20:24Speaker 4: And no matter what you do, no matter how much
- 20:27Speaker 4: you try, you remain the gender that you were born into.
- 20:30Speaker 4: It doesn't matter how you dress or how much makeup
- 20:32Speaker 4: you wear, any of it. You stay what you are.
- 20:36Speaker 4: So to me, the example here is child's is the
- 20:39Speaker 4: Dietitian From that example.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Yeah, this is it's disturbing to me as a mom.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And I know you guys wrote about this and stolen Use,
- 20:47Speaker 1: which is yours in Bethany Mandel's book the book and
- 20:52Speaker 1: Abi Yelschurer writes it about it as well.
- 20:54Speaker 2: And it's not bad therapy. But there is this concern,
- 20:56Speaker 2: and I have it as a.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Normy right leaning mom of faith, is that these professional
- 21:03Speaker 1: associations that license therapists or states in this case, require
- 21:11Speaker 1: that they go down certain therapeutic paths exactly.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah, when maybe my kid just needs to talk to somebody.
- 21:17Speaker 1: But as soon as I send my kid in there,
- 21:20Speaker 1: if your solution to their problem is that they might
- 21:23Speaker 1: be another gender, that's going to be a problem for me.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Right.
- 21:26Speaker 2: But if the professional association you're working with.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Or the state that you live in requires that that's
- 21:32Speaker 1: how you treat issues.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Then you're you're in a bind and the whole profession
- 21:37Speaker 2: is in trouble.
- 21:39Speaker 4: That's right.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 21:41Speaker 4: All these licensing organizations, they make them handle problems in
- 21:44Speaker 4: a certain way. And I understand a Christian family in
- 21:47Speaker 4: Colorado would want to talk to a Christian therapist who
- 21:51Speaker 4: would have their same values and their same kind of
- 21:54Speaker 4: ideals and how she treats their child. The fact that
- 21:57Speaker 4: this has to get to the Supreme Court, like you said,
- 21:59Speaker 4: it's banana, is that Colorado just keeps pushing these people
- 22:02Speaker 4: into it. Masterpiece Cake Shop is in another court case
- 22:06Speaker 4: where this time he didn't make a cake for a
- 22:09Speaker 4: transgender I believe, wedding. It just goes on and on
- 22:15Speaker 4: and on, and it's really wrong. I remember when Colorado
- 22:20Speaker 4: was a normal state. I worked in Colorado on the
- 22:23Speaker 4: Bush two thousand and four campaign. It was a red state.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yes, No, there's so many great things in Colorado, including
- 22:29Speaker 1: friend of the show Kelly Maher, who does great work
- 22:33Speaker 1: out there. But the idea that these totally normal people
- 22:38Speaker 1: have to drag themselves to the Supreme Court and thank goodness.
- 22:41Speaker 1: There are good organizations like Allions Defending Freedom that take
- 22:44Speaker 1: up these cases so they don't break themselves having to
- 22:47Speaker 1: do it. But you know, the emotional toll and the
- 22:50Speaker 1: financial toll, and the toll to their actual business that
- 22:53Speaker 1: they're trying to conduct on a day to day basis
- 22:56Speaker 1: is very, very high to get through these battles to
- 23:00Speaker 1: be like a semi public figure, which they never planned
- 23:02Speaker 1: on being before.
- 23:04Speaker 2: We chose this life. They did not totally.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Yeah, we chose the stupid life.
- 23:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 23:12Speaker 5: She's just a therapist. She just wants to help kids.
- 23:15Speaker 4: She just wants to talk to people and help them
- 23:17Speaker 4: with their problems. And there has to be more than
- 23:20Speaker 4: one way to do that. And it is a free
- 23:21Speaker 4: speech issue. Talk therapy should be the way that it
- 23:25Speaker 4: gets solved in these therapists office. It can't be one
- 23:29Speaker 4: way or no other way.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Well, it feels like an extension of sort of the
- 23:33Speaker 1: lefty college take on speech in general, which is like,
- 23:38Speaker 1: the truth is already decided. Yeah, the solution is already decided.
- 23:42Speaker 4: And the discussion somebody must say, we can't talk about
- 23:50Speaker 4: it further.
- 23:51Speaker 1: And the truth is both in a doctor's office, whether
- 23:54Speaker 1: it's COVID vaccines, or gender dysphoria, or in a college
- 23:58Speaker 1: setting you need to talk about it.
