- 0:02Speaker 1: And we're back to the Craig Way Show. Have a
- 0:05Speaker 1: message for Craig, share it by using the talkback feature
- 0:08Speaker 1: on the iHeartRadio WHI.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Thursday afternoon here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundreds. Right away,
- 0:30Speaker 2: Cameron Parker talking about good times in radio. Over the years,
- 0:38Speaker 2: I've often heard this described as the best job in
- 0:41Speaker 2: the worst industry.
- 0:43Speaker 3: In the country.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Can be that way, but fortunately we're comfortably ensconced with
- 0:48Speaker 4: our iHeart family. We're talking about in the past some
- 0:53Speaker 4: other things from Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkasian. Okay, the
- 0:57Speaker 4: College Football Playoff, Frankie, Now, nobody, to my utter amazement,
- 1:03Speaker 4: yesterday on the SEC teleconference asked sark and again, we're
- 1:09Speaker 4: talking about like fourteen hours after the first unveiling, the
- 1:15Speaker 4: first release of the College Football Playoff or the first reveal,
- 1:21Speaker 4: whatever you want to call it, from the CFP committee,
- 1:24Speaker 4: where Texas is number five. But if the regular season
- 1:29Speaker 4: ended today with those exact same rankings, that actually slided
- 1:31Speaker 4: into the sixth position, because you would have to have
- 1:37Speaker 4: the BYU rising up from nine to four to be
- 1:40Speaker 4: in to draw first round by so nobody asked sark
- 1:46Speaker 4: about it on the SEC teleconference totally flummengst me. And
- 1:51Speaker 4: so I was going to ask Sark about it on
- 1:55Speaker 4: Longhorn Weekly, which we recorded last night.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Again it comes up a couple hours from now at
- 1:58Speaker 2: seven o'clock. Well, it didn't even get to me. Having
- 2:01Speaker 2: asked Gene, one of the big the biggest of big
- 2:05Speaker 2: Longhorn fans, who's there, miss Gene, I asked, you know,
- 2:10Speaker 2: on the question cards that get sent out, what are
- 2:11Speaker 2: your impressions of the first CFP rankings? And I brought
- 2:15Speaker 2: up the fact that nobody asked him about and telegovery.
- 2:17Speaker 2: He laughed about that, and he said, you have to
- 2:19Speaker 2: ask me about like injuries and like, you know, we're
- 2:21Speaker 2: gonna release an injury report tonight.
- 2:23Speaker 3: You know, I waste a question on that.
- 2:25Speaker 2: But then he did address it, and he addressed it
- 2:27Speaker 2: in a very similar fashion when he was asked about
- 2:30Speaker 2: it this morning in his media zoom.
- 2:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm gonna, I'm not gonna, I'm gonna answer that,
- 2:35Speaker 5: but I think this is important. You know, what was
- 2:38Speaker 5: that Tuesday night they did that the CFP rankings came
- 2:41Speaker 5: out and we were actually having dinner as a staff
- 2:44Speaker 5: at that time. We can always get together, you know,
- 2:46Speaker 5: Monday and Tuesday nights, just to kind of get out
- 2:49Speaker 5: of the monotony of looking at film, and.
- 2:52Speaker 1: We watched it.
- 2:53Speaker 5: It just happened to be when we were eating and
- 2:55Speaker 5: the show was kind of on and you could hear
- 2:58Speaker 5: and I was kind of watching even our staff talk
- 3:00Speaker 5: about this team, that team, and so on and so forth.
- 3:02Speaker 5: And what it hit me with is the popularity of
- 3:08Speaker 5: college football right now is at an all time high.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I mean, it is.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Incredible that we're talking about a twelve team playoff ranking
- 3:17Speaker 5: system that with brackets in November, at the start of November.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And.
- 3:24Speaker 5: You know, I was thinking myself, so, are they gonna
- 3:26Speaker 5: do brackets like they do for March Madness? Is that
- 3:28Speaker 5: what's gonna happen now? Are people gonna be doing this
- 3:31Speaker 5: in college football? And you know, whether it happens or not,
- 3:36Speaker 5: but to think, like, so, we're gonna play Alabama in
- 3:39Speaker 5: the first round of the playoffs and dk R, you know,
- 3:42Speaker 5: like how exciting that is? And I don't know if
- 3:44Speaker 5: that's how it's gonna play out. Probably not, there's so
- 3:46Speaker 5: much football to be played. But on the flip side,
- 3:49Speaker 5: that next morning, I came in to talk to the
- 3:52Speaker 5: team and I kind of said, give me a show
- 3:54Speaker 5: of hands.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Who watched the CFP show last night.
- 3:57Speaker 5: And it was a spattering of like maybe the room
- 4:00Speaker 5: if that like, because I think so many of our
- 4:03Speaker 5: veteran players know, I don't even know where we were
- 4:07Speaker 5: ranked last year in the first CFP rankings, and then
- 4:10Speaker 5: the result was we ended up being ranked third and
- 4:14Speaker 5: we made a fourteen playoff, And so I just think
- 4:17Speaker 5: so many of our older players know this is way
- 4:20Speaker 5: too early to worry about where our ranking is.
- 4:22Speaker 1: What we need to worry.
- 4:23Speaker 5: About is what we do, and we need to focus
- 4:26Speaker 5: on our preparation. We need to focus on the way
- 4:29Speaker 5: we play. And that is the value of having John
- 4:31Speaker 5: Day and Jake and Kelvin and gunner Helm and so
- 4:35Speaker 5: many of these guys that have been through it now
- 4:37Speaker 5: to think, like, guys don't worry about what they're saying.
- 4:40Speaker 5: We need to be worried about what we're doing.
- 4:42Speaker 3: No doubt. Okay.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So Sark was then asked about the athletic department at
- 4:49Speaker 2: the University of Texas and fact that so many teams
- 4:55Speaker 2: are experiencing success.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Of course, Botherball's a two time national champion and.
- 4:58Speaker 2: They're ranked soccer will play Arkansas tonight in the SEC
- 5:04Speaker 2: Women's Soccer Tournament semifinal round. Texas is the number three
- 5:09Speaker 2: seed there. We know about all the other teams that
- 5:11Speaker 2: have had so much success, you know, going back over
- 5:15Speaker 2: the past year, and he was asked what it's like
- 5:17Speaker 2: to have his program and to think of the fight
- 5:20Speaker 2: as part of a thriving athletic department in the role
- 5:23Speaker 2: that Chrystal Conti, CDC, the athletic director, has had in
- 5:26Speaker 2: all of this.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been incredible.
- 5:28Speaker 5: You know, I've been speaking on this since the day
- 5:31Speaker 5: I got here four years ago.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Of just.
- 5:34Speaker 5: I'm inspired every day by the other sports and the
- 5:37Speaker 5: other teams that we have on the forty acres. We
- 5:41Speaker 5: go on a head coach's retreat once a year, and
- 5:44Speaker 5: to think I'm sitting in the room with some of
- 5:45Speaker 5: the greatest coaches in the sports history that they coach,
- 5:50Speaker 5: never mind current time, and so to be able to
- 5:54Speaker 5: pick the brains of them, to be able to watch
- 5:56Speaker 5: and support our teams has been something I'd love to
- 5:59Speaker 5: do in my time here and will continue to do.
- 6:01Speaker 5: We've We've got We've got a couple of new faces
- 6:04Speaker 5: now on staff and looking forward to watching them and
- 6:06Speaker 5: compete with their teams. But it's a great challenge because
- 6:10Speaker 5: we also know at the University of Texas we're gonna
- 6:12Speaker 5: get everybody's best shot every time that we take the
- 6:14Speaker 5: court or the field, and so I think learning and
- 6:19Speaker 5: being inspired from one another has been huge for us.
- 6:21Speaker 5: So again, wishing everybody the best of luck on their
- 6:25Speaker 5: journey here this season. You know, some of us are
- 6:27Speaker 5: already in the middle of it, some of us are
- 6:29Speaker 5: just getting started, some of us won't start until spring.
- 6:33Speaker 5: But we've got a great athletic department that CDC has
- 6:36Speaker 5: done a fantastic job of assembling, and he's assembled the
- 6:40Speaker 5: best coaching staff in the country in my opinion. You know,
- 6:43Speaker 5: from top to bottom twenty one Sports and those coaches
- 6:47Speaker 5: then have assembled some of the bag the best teams
- 6:49Speaker 5: in the country and the best staffs in the country.
- 6:51Speaker 5: So but it starts at the top, you know, obviously
- 6:53Speaker 5: with with Chairman l Type and President Hartzell.
- 6:56Speaker 1: But you know they've they've handed the.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Keys to to Christo and he's done an amazing job
- 7:01Speaker 5: and we couldn't be more fortunate.
- 7:03Speaker 2: And then finally one other question for Sark, and it
- 7:05Speaker 2: was about the fact that this Saturday, there's a couple
- 7:10Speaker 2: of things being recognized. First and foremost, it is Military
- 7:13Speaker 2: Appreciation Day, and again Nate Boyer is our special guest tonight,
- 7:16Speaker 2: so if you join us for that, you'll hear more
- 7:18Speaker 2: on that. That's one thing. And Sark was in his
- 7:22Speaker 2: in his Camo Longhorn hoodie last night for the program.
- 7:27Speaker 3: So that's one thing.
- 7:29Speaker 2: And then the other thing is this Saturday, they're celebrating
- 7:34Speaker 2: the one hundredth anniversary of Daryl K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium. Now,
- 7:40Speaker 2: it's really close. It's not exactly one hundred years to
- 7:43Speaker 2: the day. I think that was Thanksgiving of nineteen twenty
- 7:47Speaker 2: four against Baylor. I think was the first game with it.
- 7:50Speaker 2: But it's one hundred years. It's been around. It's all
- 7:52Speaker 2: most to the day, one hundred years. And Sark was
- 7:56Speaker 2: asked for his thoughts on that.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Yeah, it's an amazing arena, amazing building. You know, when
- 8:04Speaker 5: you when you have a programs like ours University of Texas,
- 8:08Speaker 5: and you think about the great teams, the great players,
- 8:11Speaker 5: the great coaches that have that have you know, competed
- 8:17Speaker 5: in the middle of that field, that have walked those sidelines.
- 8:20Speaker 5: That's kind of what I do every Saturday when I
- 8:23Speaker 5: show up to games. I don't know if you all know,
- 8:25Speaker 5: but I go for a walk and it's just to
- 8:28Speaker 5: kind of get get myself to be where my feet are,
- 8:31Speaker 5: and I have moments of reminiscing and like to think
- 8:36Speaker 5: about Darryl k Royle on this sidelines, or A or
- 8:39Speaker 5: A mac Brown or or v Y or you know whomever.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I mean.
- 8:44Speaker 5: I could go on and on and on, but the
- 8:47Speaker 5: point is like, how fortunate we are to be part
- 8:50Speaker 5: of this this team, to be part of this university,
- 8:54Speaker 5: to be part of this program knowing the greatness that
- 8:58Speaker 5: was here before. I mean, I think about what was
- 9:00Speaker 5: it like. I didn't get to see, you know, Earl
- 9:03Speaker 5: Campbell run. I didn't get it. I didn't get to
- 9:05Speaker 5: see Ricky Williams run. But what was it like? And
- 9:09Speaker 5: how electric was the stadium for some of those moments.
- 9:13Speaker 5: And so we try to create a great atmosphere for
- 9:16Speaker 5: our fans. We try to play football the right way
- 9:19Speaker 5: to where they're proud of the way that we play
- 9:21Speaker 5: the game. We're not gonna win them all every week,
- 9:24Speaker 5: but we try to play in a way that our
- 9:26Speaker 5: fans and those that are in attendance, are proud of
- 9:28Speaker 5: the way we play and that we're representing Longhorn Nation.
- 9:31Speaker 1: The right way.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Okay, and by the way, I did.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Do some research on this and it looked at it
- 9:43Speaker 2: and it was against Baylor, and it is almost one
- 9:46Speaker 2: hundred years to the day. It was November eighth of
- 9:52Speaker 2: nineteen twenty four, which the one hundredth year anniversary would
- 9:55Speaker 2: be tomorrow, so it's certainly close enough. As it was
- 10:00Speaker 2: November eighth, nineteen twenty four.
- 10:04Speaker 3: It was a Saturday, and they and.
- 10:08Speaker 2: They lost that day to Baylor, their first ever game
- 10:11Speaker 2: in the stadium.
- 10:11Speaker 3: They lost twenty eight ten.
- 10:12Speaker 2: They got the first win, but if you're going to
- 10:15Speaker 2: get your first win a m on Thanksgiving on November
- 10:20Speaker 2: twenty seventh of nineteen twenty four, they went five to
- 10:23Speaker 2: three and one that year, and yeah, but that was it.
- 10:26Speaker 3: The one hundredth anniversary of that first ever game at
- 10:30Speaker 3: dk R Texas Memorial Stadium was that day.
- 10:32Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 10:34Speaker 2: program on AM thirteen under the Zone
