Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / 53-Man Roster Projection Episode: Going Inside Eagles Trade For Sam Howell, How Roster Shakes Out
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody? Jeff Mosher,
- 0:15Adam Kaplan, Andrew Dchecko with us as this is one
- 0:19of our most anticipated Inside the Birds pods. Every year
- 0:23we do our own kind of fifty three man roster projection,
- 0:26We parse through it, we figure it out, and then,
- 0:30of course, as Adam always likes to say, it's just
- 0:32the initial fifty three. This thing changes two or three
- 0:34times over before an opener. But before that, guys, we
- 0:39do have some breaking Eagles news. Obviously, they make a trade,
- 0:43their third trade since the start of camp, and this
- 0:47time they bring in quarterback Sam Howel, which is interesting.
- 0:51There's a little bit of a Sam Howel Carson Wentz
- 0:55degrease of separation thing going on, as Wentz goes to
- 0:58the Vikings and Howel goes from the Vikings to the Eagles.
- 1:01There's a couple of areas I want to explore with this,
- 1:04but Adam, I'll start with you. Obviously, with Tanner McKee
- 1:07suffering a finger injury and with Kyle McCord not really
- 1:11looking very good in the preseason and training camp, there
- 1:14was a need here for someone who could if Jalen
- 1:16Hurts got hurt week one week two to step in
- 1:19and play.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and they know this guy, I mean mcoor put
- 1:21up some numbers against them some years ago with Washington,
- 1:24he's now on its fourth team. Wows him how times
- 1:28have changed for him? But yeah, because here's the reason.
- 1:30Mccart's clearly not ready to be emergency backup. Meaning if
- 1:34McKee's not ready, what it sure sounds like he won't be.
- 1:36That's why they made this trade most likely. But if
- 1:40McKee's not ready week one and they didn't make this
- 1:42trade for how it tells you that they don't think
- 1:44m court's ready to be that guy had hurt, scotten hurt.
- 1:46We're folks. Transactions always tell you something, even when you
- 1:51don't think it. So they do. There's a reason by
- 1:54everything that NFL teams do, there's reasoning here, and it's
- 1:58the Tanner McKeon finger injury. Now, the unfortunate part is
- 2:01they're doing it so late. If Sam How's the backup
- 2:04for week one and Hurts gets hurt, he hasn't hadded much.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Exposure to this offense, so it's it's.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Late to do it. But you know, it's not like
- 2:11they planned Tanner McKee to get hurt two weeks ago,
- 2:13a week and a half ago.
- 2:14Speaker 3: So it is what it is.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Is right now. The Eagles prayer is that Jalen Hurts
- 2:19does not suffer an injury in Week one and we'll
- 2:22see how long the McKey thing is. Doesn't sound like
- 2:24it'll be long. It was non surgical, But even with
- 2:26an experienced kuy like Howell, as Adam just said he
- 2:28doesn't know the Eagles offense, they would have to severely
- 2:32dumb it down. If Sam Howell, I mean they run
- 2:35a lot anyway. But the point is they really need
- 2:37Jaillen to stay healthy.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, they weren't going to go into Week
- 2:41one with Kyle McCory as their second quarterback. That's just
- 2:44not going to get it done. And it was just
- 2:47a matter of who they were going to acquire because
- 2:50Tanner McKee with the finger likely wasn't going to be
- 2:52available for Week one. There's a lot of quarterback names
- 2:56that may have shaken that are going to shake free.
- 2:59But you're able to get the short thing somebody that
- 3:03without having to guess your roster is stabilized there at
- 3:08the quarterback position and you can kind of go into
- 3:10it and make those decisions.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So one thing that's strange to me, the Eagles are
- 3:15going to say whenever they publicly comment about the trade,
- 3:18they're going to say that this is not as much
- 3:21about the McKee injury as it is getting depth. They
- 3:24like to have depth. You're adding a quarterback. But I'm
- 3:27not sure they make this trade if McKee is fully healthy.
- 3:30And they're going to say, I know some people have
- 3:32already seen it out there, say, well, by having Sam Howell,
- 3:35they can trade McKee next offseason. They're probably going to
- 3:38get a really good deal for him, and then Howell
- 3:40sort of becomes the Kenny Pickett, the veteran backup because
- 3:43McCord won't be ready. But Howell is in the last
- 3:46year of his deal, so there is no guarantee he
- 3:49will be with the Eagles in twenty twenty six. So
- 3:52the idea that this is another depth pick up for
- 3:55the long term as opposed to the short term, to me,
- 3:58is not a that's a fallacious argument.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yes, it's kind of like with Mechi, right Mechi's on
- 4:04the final yours deal, So Statson, sure le Eagles can get
- 4:08an idea of what Mechi could provide for them, assuming
- 4:10he makes a team, which we all, I'm sure have
- 4:11him on our fifty three. They've got this season to
- 4:14evaluate them and then see if they want to bring
- 4:16him back. But once you're a free agent, you could
- 4:18do what you want. You could shop your services to anybody.
- 4:20So you have to see how that shakes out. But
- 4:23yet again, transactions tell you a story. Now what I
- 4:25will find interesting is do they put McKee on short
- 4:29term I r at Tuesday?
- 4:32Speaker 3: On Tuesday, at the deadline, we'll see.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Well that would be what four weeks, right at least? Yes, yeah,
- 4:37I mean yeah, yeah, yeah, No, that's a good question.
- 4:41That is a good question. It's non surgical, so you
- 4:43would think of a finger injury that doesn't require surgery,
- 4:47you'd be able to be back within five weeks. But
- 4:49to your point at him, maybe they're doing it just
- 4:51to keep somebody on the roster a little extra longer,
- 4:54a week or two before they have to make a decision. Also,
- 4:56so that'll be interesting as well. Right before we get
- 5:00into our fifty three man roster projection, the Eagles helped
- 5:03us out by making a move pretty early in the process. Again,
- 5:06the deadline is four o'clock on Tuesday, that they have
- 5:09to be down by fifty three. But they waved Lewis scene.
- 5:13The uh they say dB, he I only saw him
- 5:16practicing at safety. Is that Andrew did juicee him.
- 5:19Speaker 2: He was hurt by the way, you know, he was
- 5:20waved injured.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, waiver.
- 5:24Speaker 4: He was on crutches in the locker room.
- 5:26Speaker 1: On Friday night. Wow yeah, wow, Which is a shame
- 5:31but also a microcosm of his career. He makes a
- 5:33really nice interception and then somewhere along the line gets
- 5:36hurt after that and it has to be waved injured.
- 5:40But he didn't play any other position outside of safety, right.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 1: They said dB in their in their social a lot.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Most teams do that anyway, they don't differentiate. I think
- 5:52sometimes on purpose.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, probably probably. There was a lot of Lewis
- 5:57scene truthers in the comments early in the year inside
- 6:01the Bird channels, and we said it was gonna be
- 6:03a long shot for him to make the team. It
- 6:05was worth having him on the practice squad last year.
- 6:08I'm sorry on the fifty three last year and keeping
- 6:10him and retaining him to see what he could offer.
- 6:13But to mine knowledge, Andrew, you can correct me. He
- 6:16may have gotten a few second team reps when there
- 6:19were injuries to Makooba, but he was mostly third.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Team and it was really early. It was really it
- 6:25was actually on the day where Saquon went wild. It
- 6:27was like a sixty six degree day. It was overcast.
- 6:31That was the only day that I can remember Lewis
- 6:33seene one taking second team reps. But also he had
- 6:36a pass breakup. But aside from that, it was a
- 6:39very nondescript camp, so he was he really didn't get
- 6:43a lot of run. He was thirteen.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Do you guys feel will be fair to say that
- 6:48Max and Hook actually looked a little bit more like
- 6:51a viable back and play. He's not gonna make the
- 6:54fifty three, but I mean he probably had a better
- 6:57camp than seen. Is that fair to say?
- 7:00Speaker 4: Yeah, both guys didn't get a ton of reps, but
- 7:03in the preseason and scene was banged up. I thought
- 7:07Max and Hook proved that he belonged, and I think
- 7:09that they'll continue to develop him on the practice squad.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he was an interesting player, Adam. I mean I
- 7:14kind of liked watching him play. He seemed to be
- 7:16heady nowhere in there, and if he had a chance
- 7:18to put a hit on somebody.
- 7:20Speaker 2: He would put a hit on some hives. He had
- 7:22really good size. He's just he's just not the athlete
- 7:24that you're looking for at the safety position, to be
- 7:26a guy whould dress every week. Is on the fifty
- 7:28three men roster. So I'll be interested to see. And
- 7:31I don't know. I haven't seen your guys fifty three,
- 7:33so I don't know, but I know Andre Sam's the
- 7:35guy they really like. It's it'll be interesting to see
- 7:39what happens with Andre Sam. He's real close. He's on
- 7:42my top sixty if we did top sixty.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yeah, but yeah, guy after the game on Friday, Yeah.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Okay, how did anything interesting from him?
- 7:51Speaker 4: He thought he had a so so performance against the Browns,
- 7:54but he thought he performed well against the Jets, and
- 7:57he was happy with his with his showing in the
- 7:59first game. He had a good camp. And I think
- 8:02between Tristan McCollum and Andre Sam, Tristan McCollum is the
- 8:07more ready at the safety position. He's more ready there.
- 8:10Andre Sam's a better special teams player.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Okay, interesting, all right, good stuff, Okay, Adam. Before we
- 8:18get into the fifty three, let's say I already mentioned
- 8:20four o'clock Tuesday is the roster cut down deadline. Give
- 8:23us the sequence after that as far as waivers, and
- 8:26then injury report for the first game.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah, this is interesting. So, yeah, you could have less
- 8:31than fifty three if you want, but you can't go
- 8:33over fifty three players. And then Wednesday at twelve Eastern
- 8:37is when the waiver claims are processed. And around twelve
- 8:40thirty what happens is it's they give a time frame.
- 8:43It's somewhere between like twelve twenty and one o'clock eastern.
- 8:46Team clubs could start to form their seventeen man practice
- 8:50squad sixteen players plus one international player. So matt Leo
- 8:54was with several years when it works for the Eagles
- 8:56and Vakalahi. If Egles want to have him on there
- 8:58as the seventeenth guy, they can do that. And then
- 9:01next Monday at four the first injury report for the
- 9:05Thursday night game versus those cowboys who come into Philly.
- 9:08So and they have to buy by league rule, even
- 9:11though it's a short week, you still have to release
- 9:13three injury reports. So there'll be one out Monday, Tuesday,
- 9:16Wednesday of next week.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Yeah, these next few days are like a whirlwind. I
- 9:20mean you go from like the roster cut down to
- 9:23the waiver and then right into the first injury report
- 9:25and it just happens in a flash. But that's cool
- 9:27because that means real, meaningful NFL football is very close
- 9:31upon us.
- 9:31Speaker 2: One more thing, when and you'll see agents do this.
- 9:33I warned Mike Gill about this. Mike brought up a
- 9:35really good point in Front Football four. Just because a
- 9:39player is on the roster on Tuesday at twelve at
- 9:43four pm Eastern, just not me, and he'll be on
- 9:45it on Wednesday at four eastern. You're allowed to not
- 9:49cut anyone when you claim a player. Only at this
- 9:52way of odd rules, like at twelve eastern on Wednesday,
- 9:55you could claim players, but you when the next personnel
- 9:58notice comes out Eastern, you got to cut somebody to
- 10:02make room. If you don't, if you're over the limit.
- 10:04So these agents, these young agents, when they go on
- 10:06Twitter and to congratulate their players to humiliating when the
- 10:09player gets cut, I would warn those young agents say
- 10:12absolutely nothing publicly, absolutely no.
- 10:14Speaker 1: That's a really good point. How long do you have
- 10:17between claiming the player and then the corresponding wave.
- 10:21Speaker 3: That you have to make for Yeah, it's twelve eastern
- 10:23and then for eastern on Wednesday.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, got it. So there's a couple of hours there
- 10:27where you technically have fifty four players.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah, technically right right now. I don't know do they
- 10:32have to turn in by three? Eestern? I know the
- 10:33personnel notice comes out at four o'clock. Clubs get it first.
- 10:37I don't know, you know, I don't know do they
- 10:38have to be turned in three I don't know what
- 10:39the rule is, but anyway, it's it's it sucks when
- 10:42agents do this. I just and these poor players because
- 10:45they're told because the agent feels so good. You know,
- 10:48they're in their twenties. Hey man, you made it, and
- 10:50congratulate you on Twitter.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Oops. Yeah, that is rough. All right, good stuff. Now
- 10:57we get into our fifty three man roster projections. We've
- 10:59all done them. I believe you know. We're gonna we've
- 11:02already talked a little bit. We're gonna agree and disagree
- 11:04at the same time on some of these players and
- 11:07who makes it and who doesn't make it. We'll start
- 11:09obviously with quarterback, and to me, like the Sam Howell
- 11:12addition through a monkey wrench into the thing because I
- 11:15had to then take a player off of the fifty
- 11:19three who I had on because I had to accommodate
- 11:22for what I thought was gonna be or I think
- 11:24will be four quarterbacks hurts McKee, Howell and McCord. I'm
- 11:29keeping holm Accord, not because I think he deserves it,
- 11:32but that will be a repetitive theme throughout this fifty three.
- 11:35And I would guarantee you guys too, have guys on
- 11:38your fifty three that probably don't deserve it, but are
- 11:41either draft picks or kept for a certain reason. So
- 11:44I kept for I have a feeling you guys did
- 11:46not agree with me on that. Adam, I'll start with you.
- 11:49Speaker 2: You would be correct.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Okay, Now, the the you're cutting jail hurts. Really No,
- 11:54I'm just kidding. No.
- 11:56Speaker 2: But your theory you're because I know what you're thinking
- 11:59is like Holie has this history of keeping his draft
- 12:02picks even if they don't perform, at least give him
- 12:05one more year to develop. The problem is, if you're
- 12:09keeping a guy who didn't perform, you then have to
- 12:12keep You got to cut somebody else, maybe that you
- 12:14wanted to keep it. It's not easy. This is a
- 12:16tough one. I have like four iterations of my fifty three.
- 12:20I said, all right, I'm gonna go with what I
- 12:22know what I saw him training camp, Like I forgot
- 12:24Matt Pryor. I saw him play left tackle and practice
- 12:26at left tackle rather. That surprised me when he was
- 12:29doing hmm, okay, do they need twelve offensive lineman?
- 12:32Speaker 4: No?
- 12:33Speaker 2: But anyway, so yeah, I don't see that. I well, see,
- 12:37here's the thing. We don't know if we'll put McKee
- 12:38on sure term. I are so right now, I've got it.
- 12:41Hurts McKee in hell. Now, obviously they could save a
- 12:44spot if they put McKee on.
- 12:46Speaker 1: They could, so that we should keep that in mind.
- 12:48McKee going on, I r would allow them to keep
- 12:51another player. Andrew, did you keep four or three?
- 12:55Speaker 4: Three? It's gonna be Hurts McKee and how Kyle McCord.
- 12:59I have them waving right.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna go back to one point on Howell's contract
- 13:04here to where I kept him on and sort of
- 13:07disagree with you guy. I agree he did not make
- 13:09it on Merrit col McCord. However, if Sam Howell had
- 13:12a second year on his deal, I would have waived
- 13:15McCord because then you could see even if they move
- 13:17mc key next offseason, you have Hurtz Howell for another
- 13:20year and then you can draft a developmental quarterback next year.
- 13:24But because of that, they don't. I'm keeping McCord on
- 13:28and giving him that chance to come back. Do I
- 13:31think that there's a chance, even though he played poorly,
- 13:34that some other team would claim him off waivers if
- 13:36the Eagles waved him. Yeah, I do so that's part
- 13:39of my thinking of why I kept him on. All right,
- 13:41so we'll see who what other positions we went deeper
- 13:45and thinner at At running back, so I was running back,
- 13:48let's call it running back slash full back, Andrew, who
- 13:50did you keep.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Sae Kwon Barkley, Will Shipley, AJ Dillon and at fullback
- 13:55Ben van Zumeran got.
- 13:58Speaker 1: It makes a lot of sense there, So that would
- 14:00before there's.
- 14:02Speaker 4: A lot of suspense there.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to talk real quick before Adam I
- 14:06get yours about Montreal Johnson Junior. I was really impressed
- 14:09with him as a zone runner, meaning when the Eagles
- 14:12were in shotgun and they ran their prototypical inside zone.
- 14:16He has a nice jump cut. Adam brought this up,
- 14:18I think last week in a recent pod. He saw
- 14:20him be able to score the touchdown on it when
- 14:22they went under center. The offense in general looked terrible
- 14:26in that preseason game, and he would get stop behind scrimmage.
- 14:28I don't I don't really find fault with that, but
- 14:31where I do think Montreal Johnson left a little bit
- 14:34desired as his wiggle. I think he's got good speed,
- 14:37good straight line burst, but I didn't really see him
- 14:40get himself out of He was no Henry Josie felt. Nah,
- 14:43he just didn't show to me a whole lot of wiggle.
- 14:46But I like the idea of having him on the
- 14:49practice squad, and I think he fits the zone run
- 14:52offense really well.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he's not. He's not a make you miss
- 14:59tape for an. You have to understand what he is
- 15:01and what he's not. But he's got a great build.
- 15:04He's the kind of guy you really don't want to
- 15:06wave because this is a guy who's really well liked
- 15:10in scouting circles. I could Eagles credit. There were some
- 15:12other teams involved and trying to sign as an undrafted
- 15:14free agent, and boy, I'll tell you what Andrew before
- 15:17he got hurt, he was one of those wild players.
- 15:20I was like, oh boy, okay, let's see if le's
- 15:21continue to sin they got hurt. What do you think
- 15:23of Johnson in practice?
- 15:24Speaker 4: I liked him a lot out of all the undrafted
- 15:27free agents right off the bat, watching him move. He belongs.
- 15:30And I had a chance to talk to him after
- 15:33the Browns game and he mentioned, yeah, I've missed a
- 15:36lot of time with the hamstring injury. He had to
- 15:37do a lot of pool work with the treadmill, with
- 15:39the treadmill to strengthen the hamstring. But I said, what
- 15:43do you feel you've proven to the coaches at this time?
- 15:46And he said explosiveness, that I can pass protect, that
- 15:49I can catch the football and do more than just
- 15:51be a pure runner. And they also use him as
- 15:53a kick returner as well. I think they have something
- 15:55there and want to continue to develop that on the
- 15:57practice squad.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Stuff. By the way, on your Van sumerin point, you
- 16:02saw him catch a pass from a cord. Yeah, Eagles
- 16:05did an excellent job for the most part of hiding
- 16:08Van Sumer the first game he didn't even play on offense.
- 16:10I continue to say this, and I'm sure this is
- 16:12the only podcast that anyone has heard this on, but
- 16:16I believe Van Sumrin will carve out some poor man's
- 16:19Kyle Yuschik rule. I do think they want to get
- 16:21at times the ball in his hand to create mismatches
- 16:25when the defense is in base, because when he's on
- 16:27the field with another running back, the defense is going
- 16:30to be in base. They're gonna have extra linebackers. And
- 16:33Ben van Schumeran is a great athlete and he can
- 16:35beat linebackers, and we know he has great hands. So again,
- 16:38I'm not talking about a big part of the offense.
- 16:40But you looked at the forty nine ers. They have
- 16:42so many guys who touched the ball when they had
- 16:44Ayuk and when they had Debo, and when they had
- 16:46Kittle and when they had Cemac, but they still got
- 16:48the ball to Kyle Yuschik in certain areas that created
- 16:51good mismatches.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I find way he could take on that role that
- 16:54Avery Williams was supposed to take on at Siriani bragged
- 16:57about in March. You know what I'm talking about.
- 16:59Speaker 1: There. You go about Avery in a little bit, but
- 17:02go ahead.
- 17:02Speaker 3: No, you don't have him on your roster, Okay, No,
- 17:06I have a.
- 17:09Speaker 4: I'm looking forward to seeing for fans to be able
- 17:11to see the kind of athlete that Ben Van Sumer
- 17:13is glimpses. You may have heard about it, you may
- 17:16have read our stuff, but he's one of the better
- 17:18athletes on the team, and he could do a multitude
- 17:21of things.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Andrew, was he your rookie diary two years ago? If
- 17:24I'm not mistaken, that was all right? Okay, okay, gotcha, Okay,
- 17:29I'm sorry, but I know you've got to know, all right,
- 17:31So I've got it. Let's quickly go Barkley, Shipley, Dylan
- 17:33and BVS.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:34Speaker 2: That that that. That didn't take me very.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Long, Yes, okay, and for me it was just three.
- 17:38I'm bringing aj Dillon back to the practice squad. Nobody
- 17:40wanted him in the off season. He signed for a
- 17:42very low number. I would I had him on originally
- 17:44until the Howl trade, but I think the Eagles can
- 17:47get away with getting him on the practice squad elevating him.
- 17:50But I do think he'll eventually be on the fifty three.
- 17:52I think it's gonna be one of those roster tango
- 17:54wink wink.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Not I could see it, but it might be. It
- 17:57might be getting a little too cute.
- 17:59Speaker 1: You know, well, yes, and running backs. There's going to
- 18:03be fifteen running backs on the waiver when the.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Team that is a heavy running team.
- 18:08Speaker 2: He looked good. He's all the way back once you
- 18:12cut him. Because these contracts terminated, he's not subject to waivers.
- 18:15He could sign. He can go anywhere he once he
- 18:17controls his destiny. Yeah, that's that's the I hear you
- 18:22on that. But there are other players to do that with.
- 18:24Speaker 1: All right, well, well you're right, I mean, I guess
- 18:26you have to worry about the Cowboys always trying to
- 18:27snipe somebody's running.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Back running on kick returns. It's been Will Shipley and
- 18:34AJ Dillon.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah, how about Dylan on there? Yeah, I did see that.
- 18:37Speaker 1: That was a fair point. All right, wide receiver, h
- 18:41Let's start with you, Adam, How made you.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Keep six Brown? Smith, Dotson, Mechi Cooper and I Smith
- 18:49for variety? As he came on, he could also pump return.
- 18:51He's probably the best punt returner. He looks good. He's
- 18:55finally healthy. He never was really healthy last year. To me,
- 18:58this is like I called his rookie season.
- 19:00Speaker 3: US.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Yes, he was with the team last year. He Techicley's
- 19:02not a rookie, but he didn't really he just had
- 19:04no rookie season, so he took what he learned. He
- 19:07was healthy. I know in the beginning of training camp
- 19:09he was a little slow. Didn't see a lot. It's
- 19:11training camp progress. He was better. I understand the hands.
- 19:14Every once in a while you could say they got
- 19:17to be better. He's worth developing. This kid's got something.
- 19:20There's no question about it.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Andrew AJ Brown, Deavonte Smith, Johan Dowson, John Metchi the third,
- 19:27and Darius Cooper Noahnya smith.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Y.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Yeah, they're just my thinking here is that an I
- 19:36as you can get him to the practice squad, maybe
- 19:38elevate him if need be. He did have a misread
- 19:42on one of the pump returns. He had a couple
- 19:43of drops. Obviously you don't make you're just the final
- 19:47preseason game, but when you see when it comes down
- 19:50to decision making, that may make the team a little
- 19:52weary as to deploying him out there in a regular
- 19:55season game. There there could be well, there wuld likely
- 19:59be some other names. Maybe an old friend Brittain Cubby
- 20:02could potentially shake free from the RAMS and I just
- 20:06think that you might be able to find a more
- 20:07suitable option on the waiver wire.
- 20:10Speaker 1: All right, very interesting, uh insight there, I am like
- 20:13Adam and I kept six. But I'm gonna make everybody
- 20:16mad because I also cut an Eye A Smith and
- 20:18I kept Avery Williams. And I don't care that he
- 20:20doesn't deserve it. I believe he doesn't deserve it. But
- 20:23I believe they brought him here for a reason. I
- 20:25don't think Nick Sirianni was lying when he got excited
- 20:27about him and he had an injury in OTAs Andrew,
- 20:31you just made the point that we know this guy
- 20:33can return punts. He didn't do it a whole lot.
- 20:35He was actually what the protector.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Now, he was the backup personal protector on punt behind
- 20:39shit personal protector.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Yeah. So, but I got I just got a weird
- 20:43feeling sometimes he goes do these strange things, and I
- 20:45got a feelings this is the guy Siriani wanted. So
- 20:48I kept them.
- 20:49Speaker 4: But why why they used him at punt returner after
- 20:52an Ia Smith and I got he opened the game.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Sometimes, you know, sometimes you're trying to find out more
- 20:59about a guy right then, so you give him a
- 21:02lot of reps. I mean they gave Devin White a
- 21:04thousand thousand reps right until they decided he wasn't going
- 21:07to be their their linebacker. So I think they know
- 21:10what Avery Williams can do. And I just can't get
- 21:13over the way Nick Sirianni gushed about him. They had
- 21:15a plan and maybe it would be wapping to it.
- 21:19Wait listen, it would be one thing if he started
- 21:21off camp, didn't perform well and got lower. This guy
- 21:25was never even given as far as when we watched,
- 21:28the opportunity to show what he would do. And I
- 21:30think that there's some intentionality to that soul.
- 21:34Speaker 2: But what you've trained, what it sounded like the meat
- 21:36the other teams could see it. Why would you not
- 21:39you sign him as a gadget player and a returner
- 21:41and do something on special teams? Right? Yeah, the thing
- 21:44that's here he and I talked about. I mean I remember,
- 21:47I remember you and I did a show. We were like, wow,
- 21:49Nick talks three.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Minutes about this guy that's not like him, and he
- 21:52never did. Andrew, did you see anything from him as
- 21:54an offensive parker?
- 21:55Speaker 4: He's done nothing and he was even on the first
- 21:57team kickoff. Usually that might if you're would to carve
- 22:00out a role there. Maybe he barely returned punts in
- 22:03camp it was usually a nice then there were there
- 22:07was some Johan Dotson. So Johan Dotson would be a
- 22:09player in my scenario that that could possibly do it
- 22:12if they don't find another option on the waiver wire.
- 22:16Speaker 1: You guys are making a lot of sense. I know,
- 22:18I stuck my neck out on this one. I feel
- 22:20like if a Nias Smith had had a great camp
- 22:22instead of his Andrew described it as kind of an
- 22:24up and down.
- 22:25Speaker 4: He had the.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Touchdown, he had the putt return, but he also had
- 22:27some drops and you know, some uncertainty. I feel like
- 22:29if a Nias was no doubt about it the guy,
- 22:33then I would have put him on. But because he
- 22:35didn't prove that, I feel like they can get him
- 22:37onto the squad and they will go with Avery Williams
- 22:40and we'll just see.
- 22:41Speaker 4: I really like Annias. He has a good mindset. He
- 22:45is a lot more confident. I spoke to him after
- 22:47the game on Friday. He didn't believe he had very
- 22:51a very good game, but he was. He felt good
- 22:53about the summer that he had. But you know, he
- 22:56has the right mindset for it. If he doesn't make it,
- 22:58he'll bounce back right.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Good stuff tight ends Adam.
- 23:01Speaker 2: How many boy I would in my initial fifty three
- 23:06high grantson because I know the Eagles like him a lot,
- 23:09but he just doesn't block well enough. This is why
- 23:12you could put veterans on a practical he's a vested veteran,
- 23:14so it's contract terminated. You work it out with the agent.
- 23:17We won him back, but we got some young players
- 23:19we don't want expose to waivers. That's that's the way
- 23:22I see this going down, and I also could obviously
- 23:24see him making it. This is the probably the toughest
- 23:27one I had on offense is what to do with
- 23:29Kylon Granton. And then the McKee thing put a quagmire
- 23:32on it because they may keep him if they think
- 23:36will be back by like week two. Of them, you
- 23:38wouldn't put him on IR. So that's the struggle I
- 23:40had with this one. But right now I don't have
- 23:41Grantson on it, just two tens Andrew.
- 23:46Speaker 4: I have Dallas Goddter, Grant Kakatara and E. J. Jenkins. Now,
- 23:49the reason why I have A J. Jenkins on there
- 23:52is because of his blocking prowess. The Eagles lost Johnny
- 23:54Wilson for the season. Obviously, Nick Sirianni intimated that we're
- 23:58going to look at who we have internally as well
- 24:00as you know how he's going to look outside to
- 24:02find a player who can fulfill that role and do
- 24:04the dirty work in the block. And I think EJ
- 24:07can do it. He was a collegiate wide receiver. He
- 24:10can move him around a little bit. He liked the frame.
- 24:12He can also help on special teams.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I wrestled with it. I kept too like Adam,
- 24:17I only went with Goddard in Calcatarra. I feel like
- 24:19you can get grantson and EJ on your practice squad
- 24:22and then so.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Now there are teams that there are teams they like EJ. Jenkins,
- 24:27by the way, I like you.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I thought there were last year too, right. I thought
- 24:31you that there were some teams that were interested in
- 24:33them last year. But I think that they'll be able
- 24:36to pay him on the practice squad and competitively, and
- 24:39if they need to, they'll probably guarantee that he'll be
- 24:42elevated pretty quickly as maybe even the first three weeks
- 24:46until a roster moves made. I agree with the whole
- 24:49idea that Kyle and Grantson doesn't give you anything differently
- 24:52than you're already get from calcat I mean, he may
- 24:55have a little more burst than Calcatara, but the bottom
- 24:57line is you're getting pass catcher from cal Katara. You're
- 25:00a pass catcher from Dallas Goddard who's also a blocker.
- 25:03EJ to me would be the one to elevate sooner,
- 25:06because if you want to be in twelve personnel and
- 25:09you want to block, you need EJ.
- 25:10Speaker 4: And by the way, Van Sumern, I mean we talk
- 25:13about Kylon Grantson sort of being in that h back mold.
- 25:16If you already have Van Sumer as your fullback, that's
- 25:18kind of redundant.
- 25:19Speaker 1: In my why I didn't put Ej on the fifty
- 25:21three Andrew thinking that that you could have Van sumer
- 25:25and in that sort of twenty two personnel role instead
- 25:28of twelve.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Yeah, but I look at it, going five receivers for
- 25:31me and only two tight ends would be really lean
- 25:32in terms of skill players.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Good point. All right, that's right, because me and Adam
- 25:36went six receivers. That's probably why we went later on
- 25:39the tight end area. All right, offensive line, this is
- 25:42gonna be a fun one. How many? Adam?
- 25:44Speaker 2: All right, so past the starting five, I've got ten.
- 25:48I went back and forth with Lamb and hit in prior.
- 25:52Not that Prior would be off of it, but had
- 25:55I'd not seen prior taking left tackle snaps and he did.
- 25:58I don't know how many days I saw, but he
- 26:00was doing it. I'm like, huh, Well, if they think
- 26:04he could play left tackle, be a backup fill in
- 26:06for a little bit, do they need to keep Kenna Lamb?
- 26:08I know Lamb could play right or left tackle. That
- 26:10that one. That was one where I went back and
- 26:13forth what to do with him. Kennel Lamb's contract. Let
- 26:17me take a look at it as we speak, one year,
- 26:20one point five million. They guaranteed half of it, just
- 26:23about roughly half of it. That's a cuttable contract. It
- 26:27wouldn't surprise me if they cut him. Wudn't surprise me
- 26:29if he was on it. But right now I only
- 26:30have ten. So here here are the backups, Drew Kendall,
- 26:34Matt pryor Miles Hinton. They're not cutting him. I don't
- 26:36know how. I know he's wrang, but they want to
- 26:38develop into the future swing tackle. The legendary Brett Toath
- 26:43you're seven, and Darrin Cannard because he could. They did
- 26:46cross trayon a little bit of both guard spots and
- 26:49right tackle. He would be subject to waivers if they
- 26:52cut him. I certainly you could. This is one where
- 26:55it's fluid. What you might see Tuesday might change a Wednesday.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Uh one agree with you. I think this is fluid.
- 27:00This was difficult for me. I kept ten. I kept
- 27:04almost everybody you kept. I did not keep Toth. I
- 27:07did keep Prior as six, Kendall seven, hitting eight, Canard nine,
- 27:13and Camera Williams. I did even though this is one.
- 27:18It's one that I don't think deserves it. But tell
- 27:21me who the Eagles have as developmental offensive tackles behind
- 27:25my Alatta and Lane Johnson. They have hidden just one
- 27:30and I they are usually more than one. So I
- 27:33think Cannard can play guard. I did not keep Tooth
- 27:35because I've said all along, I really don't believe he'll
- 27:38make the fifty three. That's where I so I have
- 27:40Prior as the swing tackle, like you're saying, Adam and
- 27:43Canard as the first guy up at left guard right
- 27:46guard if need be. I don't feel great about it.
- 27:49I do think, as you said, this is fluid and
- 27:51there could possibly be a move here that would negate
- 27:55any of this. But for now, I do have Camera
- 27:57Williams and hitting making it because they were drafted, and
- 28:01they were drafted knowing that Cameron Williams had these limitations
- 28:05and Stelton wants to get his hands on him. So
- 28:08those are my ten, Andrew, how man did you keep ten?
- 28:11Speaker 4: And beyond the starters we went Matt Pryor, Drew Kendall,
- 28:14Darren Kennard, Trevor Keagan, and Miles Hinton.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Oh wow, so what we all kept? A different interie? Wow,
- 28:20you kept Keegan, Adam kept Toath and I kept I
- 28:24guess Cameron Williams as an extra tackle. Interesting. I like
- 28:27that three different viewpoints. Why did you keep Keegan knowing
- 28:30he's been buried and on the third string and also
- 28:34trying to be a center which hasn't worked.
- 28:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he played thirty five snaps last season
- 28:38and he was banged up a little bit, when in
- 28:41this year he's proven that he can play all three
- 28:43interior positions, give you some versatility potentially in a game
- 28:47day situation. They just drafted him in the fifth round.
- 28:50If you know, based on the way that I have
- 28:53mind structured, if you're parting with some current draft picks,
- 28:57I think you're gonna want to retain somebody who you
- 28:58invested a fifth round pick, want to continue to work
- 29:00on him.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Fair.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Fair. I think the big takeaway from all of us
- 29:05is that, despite our differences on that tenth is that
- 29:08we all had Kendall limb Off the fifty three.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Yeah. Wow, that's the prime.
- 29:13Speaker 4: At the time, he didn't have a good camp.
- 29:17Speaker 1: We thought this was going to be the Fred Johnson backup, right, Andrew,
- 29:21you know, and and you like you're saying you just
- 29:23didn't show up. Well, how much did he play?
- 29:28Speaker 2: He started in that game, he started.
- 29:30Speaker 1: The third preseason game, and he played like a decent amount, right, Yeah.
- 29:34Speaker 4: And he gave up a lot of pressure on that
- 29:35first drive too.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, to the Jets backups, it's not like you know,
- 29:39Will Uh, what's who the Jets pass rushers is the
- 29:43kid from Iowa State they got. I can't remember his
- 29:46name McDonald, does it? Yes, he wasn't playing. Jermaine Johnson was,
- 29:51now I don't think so.
- 29:52Speaker 4: No, they wouldn't be out there all right, So.
- 29:54Speaker 1: That is our offense, good stuff, good insight, good intel
- 29:58that we'll go into defense in a second. First we're
- 30:00gonna pause and hear a word from our great friends

- 31:08with you. How many you keep? Six?
- 31:11Speaker 4: Baylon Carter, Jordan Davis, Morojomo Ty Robinson, Gabe Hall and
- 31:16Byron Young who as Vic vanjoever first to as b y.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Oh you know you were in good with with Vic
- 31:21when when he's actually given you a nickname and not
- 31:24like talking about your limitations?
- 31:25Speaker 2: Hey, would you say, be why Bright Young's in the
- 31:28Hall of Fame? Different player, but.
- 31:31Speaker 3: You know what he might have actually.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Did?
- 31:33Speaker 2: He coach it?
- 31:36Speaker 4: But to expand on on this be why why I
- 31:39kept him. He can serve the as the backup nos,
- 31:41which Thomas Booker did last season, and he got a
- 31:45handful of first team reps later in in training camp.
- 31:48He had the groin injury, missed some time, but the
- 31:50Eagles had him in the building last year. He was
- 31:53in the meeting room. He got to learn under Clint Hurt.
- 31:55I think they want to continue to see that through.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, Adam, What do you got same exactly
- 32:00the same YEA Brian Young did was not coached by Vic. Yeah,
- 32:04I did. Yeah, I This one didn't take long.
- 32:07Speaker 3: The big ones, Gay Hall.
- 32:08Speaker 2: He's got length, which you just love as a seven
- 32:11technique in this front, the heat you could move him around,
- 32:14which we saw in training camp. The light went off. Man,
- 32:17I'll tell you what last year didn't I know, Vic
- 32:19talked about he was coming back from an injury, but
- 32:21that the knock on him and scotting circles is a
- 32:23lack of energy and passion. It's part of white and
- 32:26get drafted. But that that to me was out the doorman.
- 32:27They got got it. And you got to give Clint
- 32:29heartthur d Line coach credit. He reached this kid. We
- 32:31talked about that when they signed him last year after
- 32:34the draft, coming out of Baylor. This is the guy
- 32:36that they need to be able to reach. And I
- 32:38coaching is this coaching staff, folks, and Andrew, I know
- 32:41you're there all the time.
- 32:42Speaker 3: It's the help of coaching staff, not just the players.
- 32:44Speaker 2: The coach really is, really is.
- 32:49Speaker 4: In fact, I did it. I did a show the
- 32:52with Tim McManus from ESPN dot com for The Fanatic,
- 32:56and I dedicated a segment to talking about the coach.
- 32:59A highlight some of the coaches, the assistant coaches who
- 33:02have done a nice job with his player development.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Good.
- 33:05Speaker 1: I had all six two, so this is our first
- 33:07clean sweep. Honestly, it wasn't I think Adam said this.
- 33:11It was really not hard to you just wanted to
- 33:14see that Gabe Hal and Byron Young made significant progress
- 33:20from year one, and it looks like Clinton Hurt has
- 33:23done a nice job. I was having a conversation with
- 33:25an AFC personnel guy who scouted Gabe Young coming out
- 33:28of college at a Baylor Gabeil sorry, gabble. I just
- 33:31put them together, gabble, and I said, man, he's really
- 33:35played well. And the guy said to me, he said,
- 33:38is he playing tough though, right? I said, yeah, you
- 33:41know what I think he is. It looks like it.
- 33:43And he said, And this personnel guy said to me,
- 33:46athleticism and talent was never the question. It was just
- 33:49is he going to play hard and play tough? And
- 33:51I you know, it's hard to say play tough. I mean,
- 33:53he's alignment. They all looked tough to me. But I
- 33:55thought he was doing a good job, using his hands,
- 33:57using his feet, getting off blocks, staying healthy, stay in games.
- 34:00He did have a little bit of an injury and
- 34:02came back I think pretty quickly in camp from it.
- 34:04So my shoulder. Yeah, he had older yeah, Yeah, the
- 34:07light looks like it came on for him as far
- 34:10as I got to get out there play and play
- 34:12hard and Andrew I think he might even also have
- 34:16enough size if need be, and athleticism to play that
- 34:19backup nos. Also if Jordan Davis was not in the game.
- 34:24Speaker 4: He's two ninety five. That's that's a little light, but
- 34:28it's young Byron young might be he's over three hundred.
- 34:32He looks he.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Seemed like he was sort of in the same to
- 34:35ninety eight.
- 34:36Speaker 4: Could be he had he has sort of the build
- 34:38for it. Games a little longer at six six, Byron's
- 34:41sort of I think he might be six three ish.
- 34:44But I talked to Gabe how after the Browns game
- 34:46and I said, what click for you? He said, I
- 34:48got stronger and just ball. Now it's just being in
- 34:52the building and being in the meetings, and now you're
- 34:55seeing that manifest and you know in the summer that
- 34:57he's had who's.
- 34:58Speaker 1: The one that told you that? Getting his ass kicked
- 35:01by Landon Dickerson all the game good was the light?
- 35:05The light was I got it. I'm getting my ass kicked.
- 35:08That's probably embarrassing. He's probably got the circle. You know
- 35:10how Vic does that right? He points out all your
- 35:12bad play. I mean, at some point your pride's gonna
- 35:15take take over or you're just gonna not be a
- 35:17player in the game. And he decided to be a player.
- 35:19So good for the Eagles on that one. Let's move
- 35:21to outside linebacker, slash edge, whatever you want to call it.
- 35:25This edge, yes, edge, This was really difficult for me.
- 35:29Uh and this is Adam, Like you said, with offensive
- 35:32line could be fluid. I think this is fluid. I'll wait,
- 35:36I'll get Andrews first. Andrew, who'd you go with on
- 35:38the edge? Here?
- 35:39Speaker 5: Uh?
- 35:40Speaker 4: Five of them? No one Smith, Jay Looks, h josh Ousha,
- 35:43Aziz Ojulari, and Patrick Johnson. So I kept uh, Antoine
- 35:50Powellryland off. And I don't know that you can afford
- 35:54the luxury of just stashing someone who isn't going to
- 35:57be able to help you this season. And he's a
- 35:59long ways away off and I had a lengthy conversation
- 36:02with him after the game on Friday. And then you
- 36:05also have to look at the special teams upside. He
- 36:07played six snaps in the finale, two steps in the
- 36:10opener isn't really going to help you there either. Where
- 36:12someone like Patrick Johnson is a core special teamer and
- 36:16he shows up every every August and he's made the
- 36:18team out of camp since being drafted by the Eagles
- 36:22in twenty twenty one.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I think everything you said makes sense, Adam, who do
- 36:26you got?
- 36:28Speaker 2: So? Edges Smith hunt oushe Ojlarka is the contract. You
- 36:33could debate whether he really should be on the team.
- 36:36The guarantee on his contract three millions. He'll learn over four,
- 36:39but the true guarantee that's signing this three million exactly.
- 36:44That's not how he usually doesn't walk away from contract,
- 36:46I understand. Other than the game in week two where
- 36:48he showed up looked good. Trenton camp, he just you
- 36:51look at step slow or something. I didn't see it,
- 36:55but the contract and may look he plays a certain way.
- 36:58We talked about this week's ago draft. If you didn't
- 37:01know his game, he'd say, boy, he takes those long strides.
- 37:04He doesn't look natural sometimes, but man, they know this player.
- 37:08There's a reason why he was brought here. So I've
- 37:11got Ojelari.
- 37:11Speaker 3: On it for now.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I'm gonna have APR on here. I've learned my lesson
- 37:15with Howie sometimes where because I know he's he's talked
- 37:19about this before. Over you're going back since he's been
- 37:22the general manager, particularly last seven eight years when he
- 37:24got his power back. If it doesn't look good, you're one.
- 37:28In training camp, you're one. You just can't cut the player,
- 37:31or you have to least see something right. If the
- 37:33guy looked that Donald Rumfrey, you could have said seventeen
- 37:35should have been cut, and they correct Well, they didn't
- 37:38correct the mistake. They knew he didn't deserve to be there,
- 37:41but they still kept him here one because they want
- 37:43to see in the off season year two, does he
- 37:45have anything we look at APR. I know that the
- 37:47last preseason gave me showed up a little bit training camp.
- 37:50I mean he really was with the threes mostly, he
- 37:54didn't really see.
- 37:54Speaker 3: A lot from him.
- 37:55Speaker 2: But this guy was Hoghy product in college. I get
- 37:57that was then, this is now. It's not like how
- 38:00to give up on a player. Typically I would have
- 38:02cut Power Island off my fifty three. But I know
- 38:05the way how he feels about developing players, and I
- 38:08don't feel like he'll want to walk away from a
- 38:10guy who's very productive in college.
- 38:12Speaker 1: I'm in agree with Adam. I kept six, Powell Island
- 38:15and Johnson. Yeah, I kept the top four, right, and
- 38:18I kept APR and Patrick Johnson. Patrick Johnson's going to
- 38:21be active. He's going to be your main special teamer.
- 38:24He'll probably even be you know, if there's injuries first
- 38:26off the bench at edge Way before Powell Island. Powell
- 38:29Island will be inactive every game of the year unless
- 38:32things really go south. But if he played any other
- 38:35position than edge rusher, I would have had him cut.
- 38:37But I agree with what you said about Howie. We've
- 38:39seen them keep certain players on the roster, whether it
- 38:43Lewis Scene or Eli Rix that they had no intention
- 38:46of really playing, but they want to not exposed the
- 38:48waivers and find out more about and I kept them.
- 38:51So that's why I went light at tight end with
- 38:53two and went light at running back and cutting Dylan
- 38:56as well. So I kept him. We'll see, We'll see
- 38:59what happens with him if you, like I said, if
- 39:01here's any other position, I wouldn't, but it's eye rusher.
- 39:03But I have no anticipation to this guy playing, but
- 39:05we really should have a broader discussion now about the
- 39:07top four of Hunt Smith O Jali and I'm concerned.
- 39:11You know, Nolan Smith is only playing one side of
- 39:14the line of scrimmage, Vic said because of his shoulder.
- 39:16The other shoulder I was bothering him a little bit,
- 39:18and he's already had the triceps injury. I've watched a lot,
- 39:23and while I think he has really good fast corner speed,
- 39:26edge speed, I don't think he's bendy. I think that's
- 39:29the issue that's probably been with him for the last
- 39:31few years. I've seen him get a step on the tackle,
- 39:34but then being ride the tackle will ride him wide
- 39:37of the quarterback. Yeah, inability to bend and get under.
- 39:42So I'm not as we all sit here and record that,
- 39:44I'm not sure that you know by the season opener
- 39:47this is going to be your top four Hunt Smith.
- 39:51I think we all agree with how he has an
- 39:52opportunity to upgrade here. He will, but this is what
- 39:55we've got to work with, so I'm keeping it.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and not that a team's going to trade you
- 39:59a a starting level player at edge, but it comes
- 40:03always down to this. What grades do they have on
- 40:06these players who maybe you are going to be a fourth
- 40:08edgeresser for club where a boy they feel so much
- 40:10better than the club it has the player now and
- 40:13they develop them as a backup initially. Now is a
- 40:15team going to trade them an established veteran Highly unlikely,
- 40:18not impossible. And that's a position. It's such a premium
- 40:22and let's face it, and I agree with you totally.
- 40:25I was kind of underwhelmedn't about Andrew. I was kind
- 40:27of unerwhelm with her their past rous group in training camp.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I was, and vic Van and Joe pretty much
- 40:32intimated as much. Every time he was asked about it,
- 40:35he said, no, one's really surfaced yet, good or bad.
- 40:38He was kind of waiting for that to happen. I
- 40:40thought Ozrilari was going to be that guy. He just
- 40:42never had that moment where things started to click for
- 40:45a consistent period of time. There's been flashes, but not
- 40:48nearly consistent enough, and they played them in the final
- 40:50preseason game, so I mean they need to see more clearly.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Yeah, the only issue in trying to upgrade edge is
- 40:56that nobody wants to give away a good edge, So
- 40:58you're probably if you're trading for someone, this person probably
- 41:01has some kind of flaws as well, So we'll see what.
- 41:04Speaker 4: Well, this is where I could see them keeping Okaraqua
- 41:07on the practice squad. And you have a veteran guy there, yep.
- 41:11And I also had Antoine Powell Ryland on the practice squad,
- 41:14so you have a young guy and a veteran to
- 41:16sort of supplement.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Makes sense there, all right? I actually liked because I
- 41:21kept APR. I put Oshaan Mephis along with Uncono on
- 41:25the practice squad. All right, I have a feeling we're
- 41:28gonna fly through off ball linebacker here, and we all
- 41:31have the same I'm not gonna go to do we
- 41:34all have four and the four Campbell Bonn, Jeremiah Trotter Junior,
- 41:37and Smile Minding yep? And do we all agree this
- 41:41is probably the best four sets of the best set
- 41:44of linebackers the Eagles have had in.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Quite really good, really good, right good stuff.
- 41:50Speaker 1: Lance Dixon probably played himself onto the practice squad.
- 41:52Speaker 4: I think he got hurt in the game on Friday,
- 41:55so we'll have to wait and see what that means.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, so that's that, all right? Corner slash nickel.
- 42:01I'm gonna combine corner and nickel here in honor of
- 42:04Vic Fangio's lexicon. How many Adams?
- 42:08Speaker 2: All right, so I've got six Mitchell Jackson McWilliams, Ringo
- 42:16because he's a good special teams teamer, Eli Rix, who
- 42:19the staff didn't like last year. This year they like
- 42:21him a little bit at least. And of course Dejeane.
- 42:25This one was like, after you get through four of them,
- 42:30then it's like, okay, does ring we're in those The
- 42:33fourth corning is what we thought he was. But he
- 42:35has some talent. He is a good special teams player.
- 42:38Rix has length, he's been there. They've sort of developed
- 42:41him a little bit. But this is where to me
- 42:43a trade. Is there a corner who's buried in a
- 42:45death chart as our veteran or one more thing we
- 42:49we should mention, and this is this is probably what happen.
- 42:51This is where Wednesday comes in or after week one,
- 42:54so you don't have to guarantee a vested veteran salary.
- 42:56He doesn't taken termination. Termination not pay some veteran who's
- 43:01gonna wind up getting cut. Who the Eagles really like,
- 43:03who fits the scheme like, that's that's something they got
- 43:05to look at hard here.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Okay, so you kept five then right?
- 43:11Speaker 3: Five corners and one Nichols de Gene.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Yeah, six in total?
- 43:14Speaker 4: Okay, Andrew, Quina, Mitchell, Cooper, Dejean, Adorri Jackson, Keelee Ringo,
- 43:19Jacoreyan Bennett, and Mac McWilliams.
- 43:21Speaker 2: I forget, I'm sorry, let me put Bennett over Rex.
- 43:24My bad. I forgot that. I screw that up.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Go ahead, Okay, that's right. Okay, So Bennett, go ahead, Andrew,
- 43:29go ahead, go.
- 43:30Speaker 4: Ahead, Quinna, Mitchell, Cooper, Dejean, a, Dori Jackson, Jacoreyan Bennett,
- 43:35Keey Ringo, and Mac McWilliams. So six corners, yeap six?
- 43:39You know he gets corner slash Nichols and yeah, Kie
- 43:43Ringo's gonna hang on. As Adam said, really good special teamer,
- 43:47had one All Pro vote and he was on the
- 43:49Pro Bowl ballot. He's he does some good things there.
- 43:52If he doesn't see the field defensively, he can help
- 43:54the Eagles in the third phase.
- 43:56Speaker 1: All right, good stuff makes a lot of sense. What
- 43:59I'm gonna do is through this, I'm going I'm of
- 44:02the belief that how he is going to try, like
- 44:05heck to trade keey Ringo for whatever he can get.
- 44:07I had Mitchell Cooper, de Gen, Mac McWilliams of Dori
- 44:10Jackson and Jacorey and Bennett as the five corners slash
- 44:14Nichols that they're going to keep with Rix on the
- 44:17practice squad getting elevated to play special teams with McWilliams
- 44:21to make up for the loss of Kiey Ringoli.
- 44:24Speaker 4: I wouldn't Eli wouldn't get elevated for special.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Teams special teams two years ago.
- 44:29Speaker 4: Two years ago, but then last year he played fifty
- 44:32one snaps. He's that's just and that's why he was
- 44:35only elevated. He played in seven games. That's not his strength.
- 44:38He's just a pure cover corner that is fair uh
- 44:41as a lankier bill and you know it's it's a
- 44:44physical physical Although he's a guy.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Certainly if he's waived and it's not claimed, he would
- 44:50he would be on my sixteen.
- 44:51Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely would put on.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Yeah, he would definitely a squad system, there will be
- 44:57a corner that they can probably elevate if they want
- 44:59for special or just a different player. Like we mentioned
- 45:02some of the outside or inside line stack linebackers. But uh,
- 45:06I you know, if you're gonna keep Mitchell Dejeene mac
- 45:09McWilliams a dory to start off and until Jakoorian Bennett
- 45:13is ready and you can't make it trade for another corner.
- 45:16I think it makes sense to trade killer Ringo for
- 45:18somebody who might give him more of an opportunity because
- 45:20you're already burying him on the depth chart now, so
- 45:23I get value instead of keeping him just to play
- 45:25a small role on Ringo.
- 45:27Speaker 2: I look, Ringo is not gonna have any value to trade.
- 45:30Speaker 1: It's just you don't think somebody would trade a fifth
- 45:33for a third.
- 45:34Speaker 2: No, hell no for Ringo. Brian Johnson and I'm bron
- 45:39Robinson only yellow to six and there was a reason
- 45:41for it. But the guy's a quality running back for Washington.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Ringo, Brian Robinson's making three million. That's a whole different and.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Took a take. Yeah, but no, but Ringo, but Robinson
- 45:51will have a Robinson is a good football player, Ringo.
- 45:53We know, we the words around the league with this.
- 45:56He's not a starting level player, never will be. He's
- 45:58but he's a good special teams player. Yeah, the Eagles
- 46:02have had an opportunity to move this guy and over
- 46:05the first two years and they kept him, and I
- 46:09just based on the conversations I had with other teams.
- 46:11There's not a lot of love with Ringo. Doesn't mean
- 46:13someone would give a conditional seventh. Sure, of course a fifth.
- 46:16I'd be shocked.
- 46:17Speaker 1: My fault. Let me reword it. If how he got
- 46:19a conditional seventh, I think that he would take it
- 46:22because he's not going to play a role of any
- 46:25importance on this team, and you can compensate with somebody
- 46:28else for his special teams acting. I know he's good,
- 46:30but they've got safeties, they've got stack. Somebody can take
- 46:34that spot in my opinion, So that's why I left
- 46:38him off. Obviously, if he doesn't get traded, it's a
- 46:41really good shot he does make it, and then I
- 46:44would have to keep six and probably go lighter, maybe
- 46:47go back to nine offensive lineman instead of ten, and
- 46:50camera Williams becomes the one who's sized off real quick.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Guys who starts if if Dickerson's not ready, because we
- 47:00didn't know how I had toaf on it.
- 47:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I Drew Kendall, Drew Kendall or Darren Cannard.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Yeah, probably Canard right because he's never played the spot
- 47:10at least Canards a lot.
- 47:12Speaker 4: He's had a really good summer, Drew, so Canard good
- 47:16story development. Yeah, right tackle, right guard, left guard. I've
- 47:21been saying for a while now, to keep an eye
- 47:23on him and and the Eagles like him. That would
- 47:25probably be the logical choice if Landon can't go week one.
- 47:29Speaker 1: And let me also add this caveat because you know
- 47:31we don't. We will not watch practices from now on. Okay,
- 47:35they still have a week and a half if they
- 47:37want for the next starting today until the season opener,
- 47:41to get Tyler Steen some left guard reps if they
- 47:44think that Dickerson is not fable, and then put Canard
- 47:46in his more natural right guard spot. I can see
- 47:49that being the case too.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Yeah they did that. Yeah, if we as we know
- 47:53Steen Andrew wasn't a couple of practice that he got
- 47:56a little bit of work and left guard.
- 47:57Speaker 4: Did we see that this year?
- 47:59Speaker 1: I don't remember.
- 48:01Speaker 3: I could have sworn he got something at some point.
- 48:04Speaker 4: I don't know if they would do that for one
- 48:07game though, if it were for an extended period of time, yeah,
- 48:10but for one week.
- 48:13Speaker 1: All depends on how they see it. I think Dickerson's
- 48:16gonna he's walking around, he's got to sleep.
- 48:18Speaker 2: I can't tell you he's gonna be ready, though, I know,
- 48:20I know, I know, I.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Just he reminds me of Harriman's man like he's just
- 48:24gonna be a warrior and get on the boys.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Todd's with his paying talent, was extremely high.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Yeah, nothing past Dickerson, Uh the old I think what
- 48:37you have to worry about is more he comes back
- 48:39and he plays, but he's limping off the field, you know,
- 48:41in the in the second or the third quarter, and
- 48:43then we'd see what they would do there. All right,
- 48:45So let's get to safety. Anybody keep more than four here,
- 48:51all right? No, everyone else other than Blanket Ship City, Brown, mccooba,
- 48:55and McCollum.
- 48:56Speaker 4: No, but I wanted really badly to find a spot
- 48:59for Andre Sam. I thought he had a really good summer,
- 49:02and he adds some juice to special teams coverage. He's
- 49:06really been a nice story of development under Joe Casper
- 49:08and Vic Vanjo.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Well, let me you did keep Killer Ringo, right, Yeah?
- 49:14If for some reason he's not on the team, there's
- 49:16your there's your replacement for special team and.
- 49:19Speaker 4: We don't yet know the severity. If there is any
- 49:22severity to the hamstring injury to Macouba, that that could potentially,
- 49:27you know, alter the way that they look at that position.
- 49:30Speaker 2: And Ringo, Ringo had that minor injury too, right the quad. Yeah, yeah, Now.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Obviously we should bring up the fact that Nikobe Dean's
- 49:38going to start on on pup. Yeah, so he's not
- 49:43on it. Obviously, that's why we left him off. So
- 49:46when he comes back, we always say they're gonna have
- 49:48to make a move. But like, there's always an injury,
- 49:50so like there's always a corresponding move that you can't forecast.
- 49:53But I think what's really interesting is that for all
- 49:56of the questions that this team had on defense and
- 50:00still do three positions, we clean sweet, we all agreed
- 50:04on IDL off ball, linebacker, and safety and are only
- 50:08on the edge. Was just between Powell Island making it
- 50:11and not making it, and same thing with Ringo at corner.
- 50:13So everything else where, it looks like Camp made it
- 50:17pretty clear as to who deserves to be on it,
- 50:20who does deserve to be on it, and what questions
- 50:22still remain that might lead Howie to make moves here.
- 50:26We're all in agreement on that, so good stuff. Anybody
- 50:29have any other special teamers other than Jake Elliott, Braden
- 50:32Man and Charlie Hewlett.
- 50:33Speaker 4: No, Christian Johnston, I'm kidding.
- 50:37Speaker 2: He was belling the dou was like he's pretty big
- 50:41for Johnstone was his name? Yeah, Charlie, Charlie Hewett. Charlie
- 50:45Hewlett is the old guy. But yeah, boy, Braiden Man
- 50:49and Jake Elliot look great. Braid Man, Wow, this is
- 50:52Bessie's looking all right.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Before we close this out, let's go to your I'm
- 50:56gonna get each from each of the top three guys
- 51:00you left off that will you you would have on
- 51:01if that? You know, if situations presented it, Who are
- 51:05the top three guys you have left off?
- 51:07Speaker 4: Go ahead at him?
- 51:09Speaker 2: Well, Kennall Lamb was one of them. Again, if I
- 51:11had it not seen prior getting some snaps of left tackle,
- 51:14I probably would have had him on it because he
- 51:15could play both left and right. I want to keep
- 51:18Montreal Johnson. I just the goose, the guy could play.
- 51:22I mean, there's no question, but they know it would
- 51:25go to your point, Jeff, if if you're keeping Montreal
- 51:28Johnson Dyllan's got to go, and then you work it
- 51:31out with the agent. You have to do it before
- 51:32you cut him and go, hey, will you be willing
- 51:33to do this? Do the practice squad tango with him
- 51:37with a veteran, be one of the veterans on there
- 51:39After that, Kyli Granson was the one that he was
- 51:43the toughest. I had him on my I did three,
- 51:45three or four iterations. He was on my first two.
- 51:49But then I it's the Brett Toth one. This dude
- 51:52won't go away.
- 51:53Speaker 1: He really won't. He's like becoming He's starting to like
- 51:57make uh Julian Vandervelt look irrelevant. Now well all the
- 52:00times he's been able to come back. All right, So
- 52:02those are your top three? Who are your top three
- 52:04guys left off? For me?
- 52:06Speaker 4: I would say Andre Sam and Ayas Smith and he
- 52:13would have he wouldn't have made it anyway. But Parry Nickerson,
- 52:15Perry Nickerson had you know, he's thirty years old, the
- 52:18oldest player on the defense. He's very well respected amongst
- 52:22that group. Had an interception, really good story.
- 52:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, listen for me. You know, Terras Marshall is
- 52:28tough to say goodbye to. I thought when he was
- 52:30out there and healthy. He looked pretty decent, fluid mover.
- 52:34I mean, you're gonna keep a guy like Darius Cooper
- 52:36for obvious reasons, but you're going to pass on a
- 52:39guy like Terres Marshall who could probably be right now
- 52:42just as effective as your number four as Johnny Metchi
- 52:46or or Darius Cooper, and certainly Avery Williams is not
- 52:49even a wide receiver. So that one was a tough
- 52:51one for me. Aja doan obviously, and you know Ringo,
- 52:56if he doesn't get moved, I would think would be
- 52:58on it. So those are my three.
- 53:00Speaker 2: Darius Cooper sogn a three year deal. They guaranteed just
- 53:02ninety grand. So yeah, that's a great contract to have
- 53:06a few of the Eagles.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, good stuff. So that's gonna do it.
- 53:11That is our fifty three man roster projection, really good
- 53:13insight and intel. They're giving you an idea of what
- 53:15the Eagles will be doing over the next forty eight
- 53:18hours and beyond. That's gonna do it for this episode
- 53:21of Inside the Birds, the leading podcast and Eagles Intel
