- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with I Heart Radio. Hello and welcome into the NFL
- 0:19Speaker 1: Network newsroom. Alongside Steve White, Chaim Moll, My Race and
- 0:22Speaker 1: this is NFL Now. We'll be getting to all of
- 0:25Speaker 1: your week four look aheads coming up in just a
- 0:27Speaker 1: little bit. But Steve, Thursday Night Football certainly taking a
- 0:30Speaker 1: backseat to the health and well being of to a
- 0:32Speaker 1: tongue of violoa. Yeah, I mean that was very, you know,
- 0:34Speaker 1: horrifying to see. Um. You know, I've got a relationship
- 0:38Speaker 1: with two in the family, so it's personally tough. But
- 0:40Speaker 1: for every player and any person who saw that, I mean,
- 0:43Speaker 1: you understand the dangers of the sport and a lot
- 0:46Speaker 1: of other issues that come with it. Yeah, let's get
- 0:48Speaker 1: to some new right now information Onto a tongue of
- 0:50Speaker 1: viola low of the latest on his health. This is
- 0:54Speaker 1: what happened last night, Thursday Night Football, Cincinnati. The scene
- 0:57Speaker 1: to a tongue of violoa rolling to his left. Josh
- 1:00Speaker 1: Tupo comes down, yanks him down to a lands on
- 1:04Speaker 1: the back of his helmet. He would have to be
- 1:06Speaker 1: carted off taken to the hospital for examination. There lots
- 1:11Speaker 1: of reaction coming in from the Dolphins locker room. Let's
- 1:13Speaker 1: listening to Mike McDaniel last night. That was an emotional moment. Um.
- 1:20Speaker 1: That is not part of the deal that anyone signs
- 1:24Speaker 1: up for, even though you you know, it's a possibility
- 1:27Speaker 1: in football to have something that you have to get
- 1:30Speaker 1: taken off on a stretchers. You know, all of his teammates, myself,
- 1:37Speaker 1: we were all, um, very very concerned. So the best
- 1:42Speaker 1: news that we could get is that everything is checked out, UM,
- 1:46Speaker 1: that he didn't have any anything more serious than um,
- 1:52Speaker 1: a concussion. For me personally, man, it was there was
- 1:56Speaker 1: a lot going through my mind, honestly, and just giving that, um,
- 2:01Speaker 1: you know, I guess the same team. Um, I was
- 2:04Speaker 1: carted off the field, and so a lot just going
- 2:09Speaker 1: through my mind. But I knew that I had to
- 2:10Speaker 1: just snap and um try to lead this team to
- 2:13Speaker 1: the victory. Eddy Bridgewater of course referring to last December
- 2:17Speaker 1: as Broncos quarterback carted off against the Bengals in Denver
- 2:21Speaker 1: last year. From more perspective on this story, we welcome
- 2:24Speaker 1: in our NFL Network inside Ian Rappaport as well as
- 2:26Speaker 1: Cameron Wolf, who was at the game last night and
- 2:29Speaker 1: is back at the Dolphins facility. Cam will start with you,
- 2:32Speaker 1: what is the latest on two A tongue of ioloa. Yeah,
- 2:36Speaker 1: omarrow is a very scary moment for two of last night,
- 2:40Speaker 1: but as of this morning, the updates have been as
- 2:42Speaker 1: positive as possible. I'm told that Toa was able to
- 2:46Speaker 1: fly back on the team with the team last night.
- 2:49Speaker 1: He returned to the stadium with a precautionary neck brace,
- 2:52Speaker 1: something they have when you have these sort of neck
- 2:54Speaker 1: injuries and head injuries, and so he returned on the
- 2:58Speaker 1: flight back with the team. He's back at the South
- 2:59Speaker 1: Florida home and for I'm told they did X rays
- 3:03Speaker 1: last night. Those x rays came back negative, which is
- 3:05Speaker 1: good news. They will still have an m r I
- 3:08Speaker 1: pending or right now he is in the concussion protocol
- 3:11Speaker 1: and he'll go through that process. But look, this is
- 3:13Speaker 1: something where teammates we're thinking about him all through the night,
- 3:17Speaker 1: so there was a worry of what he was gonna
- 3:20Speaker 1: what the result was, and ultimately when Mike me Daniel
- 3:22Speaker 1: delivered the news to the team that he's gonna be
- 3:25Speaker 1: able to fly back, their spirits were literally uplifted. So
- 3:28Speaker 1: we'll keep an eye on two A status is going forward,
- 3:30Speaker 1: but this is something that is bigger than football. It's
- 3:32Speaker 1: a human element and for Toua right now there's positive
- 3:36Speaker 1: signs going into the weekend, and positive signs are good. Obviously,
- 3:41Speaker 1: hope this keeps up for two It sounds like a
- 3:44Speaker 1: lot of the tests, including those on his neck, have
- 3:46Speaker 1: come out relatively clean. This morning. We will be obviously
- 3:50Speaker 1: updating that as we know camp. So that is what
- 3:52Speaker 1: happened last night. Of course, we know there's the ongoing
- 3:55Speaker 1: investigation by the NFL and the NFLPA regarding the concussion
- 3:59Speaker 1: protocol and how that was followed. On Sunday, you see,
- 4:03Speaker 1: the NFL p A has come out with some statements,
- 4:05Speaker 1: including this one saying essentially, our investigation to the potential
- 4:09Speaker 1: protocol violation is ongoing, along with the hope for a
- 4:13Speaker 1: full and speedy recovery for TWAH. So that is what's
- 4:16Speaker 1: going on now, the NFL and the nfl P looking
- 4:19Speaker 1: into how well the protocol was followed. Specifically, there was
- 4:23Speaker 1: a shot on the field of two A looking wobbly
- 4:27Speaker 1: and exhibiting what appeared to be at the time to
- 4:29Speaker 1: be some sort of neurological issue. The Independent neurologist and
- 4:33Speaker 1: the Miami Dolphins team doctors believed that it was related
- 4:37Speaker 1: to his back, not his head. That is why, to
- 4:39Speaker 1: a last Sunday was not in the concussion protocol. That
- 4:42Speaker 1: is why he was cleared. But to be sure, all
- 4:45Speaker 1: parties are going through that making sure that everything was
- 4:48Speaker 1: done as it should and there should be some sort
- 4:50Speaker 1: of resolution on how well the protocol was followed, probably
- 4:54Speaker 1: within the next weeks. Yeah. Can we saw those images Sunday?
- 4:58Speaker 1: You were at that game as well, with to his
- 5:00Speaker 1: knees buckling, his teammates having to hold them up. Those
- 5:03Speaker 1: images fresh on the forefront of everyone's mind, certainly adding
- 5:07Speaker 1: to the frightening, frightening nature of last night's events. What
- 5:11Speaker 1: were his teammates saying there in Cincinnati camp, Yeah, Omar,
- 5:15Speaker 1: just like we saw the images, they saw it up close.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And I went into that locker room and was silent
- 5:20Speaker 1: when you walked in at first. People were clearly still
- 5:24Speaker 1: impacted by the two injury. One of the first people
- 5:26Speaker 1: I walked to was one of his former teammates at
- 5:28Speaker 1: Alabama and one of his best friends on the team,
- 5:30Speaker 1: Jalen Waddle, and he was very emotional discussing how he
- 5:34Speaker 1: was wrestling with his own emotions seeing his quote brother
- 5:37Speaker 1: on the field hurt and he knows how much he's
- 5:40Speaker 1: had to come through through rehab of his own injuries
- 5:42Speaker 1: and seeing him down in that respect, His center Connor
- 5:46Speaker 1: Williams described him as the heart of the team, and
- 5:49Speaker 1: his receiver Tyreek Hill said they were checking in throughout
- 5:52Speaker 1: the second half of that game while I was ongoing
- 5:54Speaker 1: for updates on to us. So obviously their focused in
- 5:57Speaker 1: the midst of a game is on their quarterback. And
- 5:59Speaker 1: I want to discuss the support that we saw that
- 6:02Speaker 1: game for two, the whole team in the middle of
- 6:04Speaker 1: the field, players, coaches, trainers. As he was loaded on
- 6:08Speaker 1: that stretching board, the stadium, the Bengal stadium was chanting
- 6:12Speaker 1: to A, to A, to A. And then even after
- 6:15Speaker 1: the game, you mentioned Teddy Bridgewater earlier, he talked about
- 6:17Speaker 1: just the human element of this. He said, obviously we're
- 6:20Speaker 1: football players, but this is a moment that reminds you
- 6:23Speaker 1: that you are humans. So their spirits were uplifted when
- 6:26Speaker 1: they got news that Toa was gonna be flying home
- 6:28Speaker 1: with him. I can be I can report that he
- 6:30Speaker 1: has been walking, he's been talking, he's been smiling and
- 6:33Speaker 1: so that was all positive for them and what was
- 6:36Speaker 1: a very scary and really a shifting moment. Hard to
- 6:39Speaker 1: come back and play football after that, but they did
- 6:42Speaker 1: their best for their team. Difficult for most of us
- 6:45Speaker 1: to watch after that moment in the game, much more
- 6:49Speaker 1: difficult obviously for the players to play can Ian thank
- 6:51Speaker 1: you both very much, much more from you throughout the show.
- 6:54Speaker 1: This was the outpouring of love, support prayers for to
- 6:58Speaker 1: a Tongue of Ioloa by his fellow players in the
- 7:01Speaker 1: National Football League obviously very tight knit community, and for
- 7:04Speaker 1: to Ny in the NFL. For much more on this story,
- 7:08Speaker 1: we welcome in our Judy Batista, who's with the NFL's
- 7:11Speaker 1: chief medical Officer, Dr Alan Sills. Dr Sills, thanks for
- 7:16Speaker 1: joining us. First, let's get to the most important thing,
- 7:18Speaker 1: which is how is to a tug of Violo of
- 7:20Speaker 1: feeling this morning and what kind of injuries did he
- 7:23Speaker 1: suffer last night? Well, Judy, you know, we don't ever
- 7:25Speaker 1: want to get into specifics about injury invading anyone's privacy,
- 7:29Speaker 1: but I think I can tell you that he was
- 7:31Speaker 1: evaluated the hospital and released last night and was able
- 7:34Speaker 1: to travel back home with the team. Which is all
- 7:36Speaker 1: a great sign. So he'll continue to be monitored very carefully.
- 7:39Speaker 1: But he was released from the hospital and we're all
- 7:42Speaker 1: certainly grateful for that. Why was he cleared to fly
- 7:45Speaker 1: home last night? We saw the injury and it looked
- 7:47Speaker 1: bad taken off on a stretcher, So why was he cleared? Well,
- 7:51Speaker 1: there are a couple of things to realize, Judy. First
- 7:53Speaker 1: of all, the fencing posture or impact seizure typically only
- 7:56Speaker 1: last for a few seconds up to two maybe a minute,
- 8:00Speaker 1: and then patients are often back to normal very quickly
- 8:03Speaker 1: after that. So it's a it's a very scary looking
- 8:05Speaker 1: set of signs, but but patients can clear quickly. And
- 8:08Speaker 1: again I'm speaking generally. I'm not speaking about his case
- 8:10Speaker 1: because I wasn't there to examine him. Um. The other
- 8:13Speaker 1: thing is that patients go to hospital and they're they're
- 8:16Speaker 1: carried on a spine board because if there's a loss
- 8:19Speaker 1: of consciousness and they fall, you always want to protect
- 8:21Speaker 1: or prevent against any further spine injury. So when you
- 8:24Speaker 1: have a patient who's on a spine board and you
- 8:26Speaker 1: take them to the hospital, then they're going to be
- 8:28Speaker 1: tested and and checked for both spine injury and brain injury,
- 8:32Speaker 1: and typically that involves imaging or X rays or m
- 8:35Speaker 1: r I scans of both of those areas, and and
- 8:37Speaker 1: those will be then evaluated and the patient will be
- 8:40Speaker 1: evaluated and the hospital medical staff will make a decision
- 8:42Speaker 1: obviously about whether the patient needs to be kept for
- 8:44Speaker 1: observation or not. So you know, that's the protocol we
- 8:47Speaker 1: always follow anytime any player is transported to the hospital.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Each stadium has what's called an emergency action plan just
- 8:54Speaker 1: to be prepared for these type of situations. And so, um,
- 8:57Speaker 1: that was what was followed last night and what we
- 8:59Speaker 1: always follow in these type of cases. Let's go back
- 9:02Speaker 1: to less Sunday. Um, when t was brought down, he
- 9:06Speaker 1: hit the back of his head hard. When he tried
- 9:08Speaker 1: to stand up, he stumbled. He he struggled, his knees
- 9:11Speaker 1: buckled under him, and his teammates for a while had
- 9:14Speaker 1: to support him. He looked like he was shaking his
- 9:16Speaker 1: head to sort of clear the cobwebs. Um, those are
- 9:19Speaker 1: all things as we've learned more about concussions over the
- 9:22Speaker 1: last few years, that we've been told our symptoms of
- 9:25Speaker 1: head injury and the kinds of things that automatically keep
- 9:29Speaker 1: players off the field. We were told he was checked
- 9:32Speaker 1: for a concussion, it was determined that it was a
- 9:35Speaker 1: back injury, and he was allowed to return to this game.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Can you tell us what went into clearing him from
- 9:41Speaker 1: a concussion? Who made that decision? Well, I can provide
- 9:46Speaker 1: this information to you, Judy. First of all, all of
- 9:49Speaker 1: our concussion evaluations on game day are done by both
- 9:52Speaker 1: a team physician and an independent neuro consultant. That means
- 9:56Speaker 1: someone who's expert in brain and spine trauma, who's very
- 10:00Speaker 1: familiar with and trained in our concussion protocol, has no
- 10:03Speaker 1: relationship to the team the player. They're brought in on
- 10:06Speaker 1: game day, And as you know, we have one of
- 10:07Speaker 1: those doctors on each sideline. We also have one up
- 10:09Speaker 1: in the booth with our spotters to help recognize injury.
- 10:12Speaker 1: So what I can tell you in this situation, Judy,
- 10:15Speaker 1: is we're still doing a very active review of the
- 10:17Speaker 1: entire situation. We do that in conjunction with the Players Association,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and that review process will entail both groups speaking with
- 10:26Speaker 1: everyone involved, the the athletic trainer, the physician, the unaffiliated neurospecialist,
- 10:31Speaker 1: the spotters in the booth, the neuro specialists in the booth,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and and and ultimately the player themselves. And so we'll
- 10:37Speaker 1: have all of those interviews. We review all of the video,
- 10:39Speaker 1: we review all of the data, and the purpose of
- 10:41Speaker 1: that review is to make sure that the concussion protocol
- 10:44Speaker 1: was followed. And as you are aware, Judy, they're very
- 10:47Speaker 1: serious consequences if the protocol was determined not to have
- 10:50Speaker 1: been followed. But we don't make that determination from video,
- 10:53Speaker 1: We don't make that determination from any other accounts. We
- 10:56Speaker 1: make that determination, meaning the league and the Players Association
- 10:59Speaker 1: medical staff together once we review all that data. What
- 11:02Speaker 1: I can tell you, Judy, So so I can't comment
- 11:04Speaker 1: speci cyphically on that because that investigation is still very
- 11:07Speaker 1: actively ongoing and it's something that we're reviewing together. What
- 11:11Speaker 1: I can tell you those again to reiterate that in
- 11:13Speaker 1: real time these evaluations, when a player is evaluated, they
- 11:18Speaker 1: are examined and interviewed by both the team physician and
- 11:21Speaker 1: this independent neurospecialist, and those two confer and they must
- 11:25Speaker 1: both agreed together in real time that a player is
- 11:28Speaker 1: cleared in order for them to return to the game.
- 11:31Speaker 1: You mentioned the fact that our concussion protocol has a
- 11:34Speaker 1: few specific no go criteria, meaning there are a couple
- 11:37Speaker 1: of things that if a player just has those situations
- 11:40Speaker 1: then they are immediately diagnosed. We saw one of those
- 11:43Speaker 1: last night, which is this fencing posture, impact seizure. Amnesia
- 11:47Speaker 1: and confusion are the other two, but those are the
- 11:49Speaker 1: only immediate no goes criteria. Everything else that that suggested
- 11:53Speaker 1: concussion diagnosis comes after a detailed examination, and and that
- 11:57Speaker 1: examination can either be done in the blue tent or
- 11:59Speaker 1: it can be done in the locker room. Uh. The
- 12:01Speaker 1: one that's done in the locker room is a long
- 12:03Speaker 1: form exam. It's called the Sport concus us An Assessment
- 12:05Speaker 1: Tool or SCAT, and I can tell you that that's
- 12:08Speaker 1: what was done in this case. So a very active
- 12:10Speaker 1: review that will continue. But important to recognize that these
- 12:12Speaker 1: are not decisions made by one person. Um, they're made
- 12:15Speaker 1: jointly by team staff. And also this independent neuroexpert in hindsight,
- 12:20Speaker 1: should he have been kept off the field last Sunday Again, Judy,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I think we have to go through and review all
- 12:27Speaker 1: of the data. We have to speak with everyone involved
- 12:30Speaker 1: and understand exactly what they saw and what they heard
- 12:33Speaker 1: and what data was available to them, and did they
- 12:36Speaker 1: correctly apply the concussion protocol. That's what we always ask
- 12:39Speaker 1: our personnel to do is correct is apply the protocol.
- 12:42Speaker 1: And again, we can't make that decision. We I'm saying
- 12:45Speaker 1: me as a physician, I can't make that this decision
- 12:47Speaker 1: watching on television at all, Um, I have to understand
- 12:50Speaker 1: and know exactly what data was made to them. What
- 12:53Speaker 1: I can tell you, Judy, is this, as soon as
- 12:54Speaker 1: we finished that review, will release the results of that
- 12:57Speaker 1: to everyone. We want to be as transparent and open
- 13:00Speaker 1: about this as possible. We certainly want to learn to improve,
- 13:04Speaker 1: to get better, and we want to be the best
- 13:05Speaker 1: in the world at diagnosing and managing these injuries. And
- 13:08Speaker 1: so if we find that we fell short, or if
- 13:11Speaker 1: we find that there are things that we need to change,
- 13:13Speaker 1: we will certainly be upfront about doing that. We've done
- 13:15Speaker 1: that before and we will certainly do that again if
- 13:17Speaker 1: that's what's indicated was to us subsequently checked for concussion
- 13:21Speaker 1: symptoms Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday leading up to the game last night. Absolutely,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I know that he was checked after the game. I
- 13:28Speaker 1: know that he was checked the following day. In fact,
- 13:30Speaker 1: every player who gets an examination on game day gets
- 13:33Speaker 1: a follow up exam the following day. Even if that
- 13:36Speaker 1: exam was negative, that's part of our concussion protocol. And
- 13:39Speaker 1: then I know that this player was checked every day
- 13:41Speaker 1: leading up to the game. So again, very comprehensive and
- 13:44Speaker 1: thorough evaluation that consists of a prescribed set of test
- 13:48Speaker 1: outlined by our concussion protocol. Given the severity of the
- 13:52Speaker 1: injury last night, is it possible that that was exacerbated
- 13:56Speaker 1: by the injury he suffered on Sunday, the fact that
- 13:58Speaker 1: he hit his head last Sunday, Yeah, I think, Judy,
- 14:01Speaker 1: it's it's impossible to know that, but certainly that's one
- 14:04Speaker 1: of the factors that we want to look at. And
- 14:06Speaker 1: and again, every injury to us is an important injury.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Every injury is one we want to prevent. And we're
- 14:11Speaker 1: about reducing concussions across the board, and not only that,
- 14:15Speaker 1: as you know, uh I personally and and our league
- 14:18Speaker 1: has gotten out front and said we want to reduce
- 14:20Speaker 1: head contact overall as well. We think that's a very
- 14:22Speaker 1: important safety goal. So again, these are all things that
- 14:26Speaker 1: we will review in the course of our review of
- 14:28Speaker 1: that situation. When we reach the conclusions, together with the
- 14:31Speaker 1: Players Association, will be very transparent about that. We'll we'll
- 14:34Speaker 1: share that with you, with everybody that that has an interest,
- 14:37Speaker 1: and we'll also look to take away from this how
- 14:39Speaker 1: we can improve and prevent this and other similar injuries.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Given what we've seen into a situation and even in
- 14:47Speaker 1: other injuries situations, how might the protocol have to be
- 14:50Speaker 1: adjusted going forward to prevent what we've seen transpired just
- 14:55Speaker 1: this last week. Well, I think, Judy, that's an important question.
- 14:59Speaker 1: It's one that we will certainly ask and and it
- 15:02Speaker 1: will be informed by the results of the view process
- 15:05Speaker 1: that we have on hand. We've we've been through this
- 15:08Speaker 1: before if you think back to, for example, the Tom
- 15:10Speaker 1: Savage situation in Houston a couple of seasons ago, and
- 15:12Speaker 1: in that situation, while we ended up finding the protocol
- 15:16Speaker 1: had been followed, we recognized that there were some loopholes
- 15:18Speaker 1: in the protocol that that we might have wanted to adjust,
- 15:20Speaker 1: and we did adjust those. So again, I don't want
- 15:23Speaker 1: to pre judge the outcome of the review. I think
- 15:25Speaker 1: it's important that we complete that review before we make
- 15:27Speaker 1: any determination. But part of our commitment duty is we
- 15:31Speaker 1: are constantly trying to improve what we're doing, whether it's
- 15:33Speaker 1: our protocol itself, how we apply it, how we communicate.
- 15:37Speaker 1: We want to get better at these things. I think
- 15:39Speaker 1: we have gotten better. We've seen our care improved drastically,
- 15:42Speaker 1: but that doesn't mean that we're done. We can always
- 15:44Speaker 1: look to improve to do a better job. And that's
- 15:47Speaker 1: what we'll try to take away and learn from this situation.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And whatever our review leads us towards that, that's the
- 15:52Speaker 1: direction will move in. If we feel we need to
- 15:54Speaker 1: make adjustments collectively with the players union, were absolutely committed
- 15:57Speaker 1: to that and we will share, as I've said, what
- 16:00Speaker 1: we find and and see how we can all learn
- 16:02Speaker 1: and better adapt from those learnings. Thanks Dr Sills, thanks
- 16:08Speaker 1: for having all right, Thank you Judy, Thank you Dr
- 16:11Speaker 1: Sills asking all the appropriate questions. Maybe the team physician
- 16:15Speaker 1: and the independent neurologists, once we find out the answers
- 16:17Speaker 1: from them on those particular questions after the review, will
- 16:21Speaker 1: have a lot more answers at this point, Steve, what
- 16:22Speaker 1: stood out to you about Dr sills interview there? Well, first,
- 16:25Speaker 1: have you talked about the review? I mean, I think
- 16:26Speaker 1: a lot of people are wondering how come it took
- 16:28Speaker 1: so long between Sunday and Thursday to determine if that
- 16:31Speaker 1: was quickly enough to find that, if all the protocols
- 16:34Speaker 1: were followed. But the thing that really stood out to
- 16:37Speaker 1: me is when Dr sills Omar says that to a
- 16:39Speaker 1: tongue of VLOA was examined Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday leading
- 16:46Speaker 1: into Thursday's game, Yet he was not in the concussion protocol.
- 16:49Speaker 1: The only thing that concussion protocol details is the day
- 16:53Speaker 1: after an endgame, you know, examination for a concussion, is
- 16:56Speaker 1: that he'd be followed up the Monday. So I called
- 16:58Speaker 1: the league office and was told that the Dolphins went
- 17:02Speaker 1: above and beyond to make sure to check him out
- 17:05Speaker 1: on Tuesday and Wednesday. Now my follow up question was
- 17:09Speaker 1: was the independent neurologists also involved? Still waiting to get
- 17:12Speaker 1: an answer on that, because again too, was not in
- 17:15Speaker 1: the concussion protocol that he was just listed on the
- 17:18Speaker 1: injury report with head and neck injuries. Here's some other
- 17:21Speaker 1: things to also think about, because too, it was not
- 17:25Speaker 1: in the concussion protocol, he did not have to go
- 17:28Speaker 1: through some of the normal activities that are required to play.
- 17:32Speaker 1: There are two physical types of examinations, you know, athletic examinations,
- 17:37Speaker 1: football related skill examinations. We don't know if he went
- 17:40Speaker 1: through those on either days and then there's a follow
- 17:43Speaker 1: up clearance by the team doctor and the independent doctor.
- 17:46Speaker 1: That's if you are in the concussion protocol. Also, mind you,
- 17:50Speaker 1: leading up to the game on the Dolphins injury report
- 17:53Speaker 1: or two only had neck and ankle injuries listed. The
- 17:56Speaker 1: team did not practice all last week. They just went
- 17:59Speaker 1: through walk throughs, so again it is hard to judge
- 18:03Speaker 1: exactly if he had balanced is things like that, but
- 18:06Speaker 1: everything leading up to it is conversations, things like that.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Apparently he was okay. Here's the big question. What is
- 18:15Speaker 1: a coach to do if the if the player is
- 18:18Speaker 1: medically cleared, he was cleared by the doctors. Was Mike
- 18:21Speaker 1: McDaniel supposed to say, well, he did go through the Sunday,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I can't play him, but the doctors are telling me
- 18:26Speaker 1: he's cleared. Because the coach has no involvement in the examination,
- 18:31Speaker 1: when it comes to the medical decisions, he has to
- 18:33Speaker 1: take the advice of the doctors. And the reason why
- 18:36Speaker 1: this is a big question is we could be looking
- 18:39Speaker 1: at the same situation next week. If Tua is medically cleared,
- 18:44Speaker 1: does the coaching staff and other decision makers put him
- 18:47Speaker 1: in the game. Week five against the Jets, or do
- 18:49Speaker 1: they hold him out just because of the optics. This
- 18:53Speaker 1: is going to be an ongoing discussion because we can
- 18:57Speaker 1: sit here right now not knowing everything and make judgments.
- 19:00Speaker 1: But again, the Dolphins have a lot of things to
- 19:03Speaker 1: figure out if they put him back on the field
- 19:04Speaker 1: for a week, A lot of questions without answers at
- 19:07Speaker 1: this point. Will continue to follow this story as it
- 19:09Speaker 1: warrants all the way leading up to the New York
- 19:12Speaker 1: Jets game next weekend and beyond. Thank you, Steve. Still
- 19:15Speaker 1: much more to come here on NFL Now, including a
- 19:18Speaker 1: trip to London. Stacy Dale's has been there all week long.
- 19:22Speaker 1: We continue to dissect Vikings and Saints next when NFL
- 19:25Speaker 1: Now continues. London is the place to be this weekend
- 19:35Speaker 1: as the International Series begins anew the Vikings and the Saints,
- 19:40Speaker 1: and the Vikings have arrived. They didn't come over until
- 19:44Speaker 1: late Thursday night, arriving early Friday morning there in London,
- 19:48Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins Kevin O'Connell getting set for New Orleans on
- 19:52Speaker 1: Sunday at nine thirty Eastern, a game you can watch
- 19:55Speaker 1: right here on NFL Network. And that's where our Stacy
- 19:58Speaker 1: Dale's will be and that's where our Stacy Dale's has
- 20:01Speaker 1: been all week long, the adopted sit Sin of the UK. Now, Stacy,
- 20:07Speaker 1: how are the Vikings adjusting now having gotten in so
- 20:10Speaker 1: late compared to when the Saints got in? Yeah? I
- 20:13Speaker 1: love it over here. It's been really awesome to be
- 20:16Speaker 1: with the Londoners. I will tell you that Omar for
- 20:18Speaker 1: these Minnesota Vikings. They landed here at eight o'clock. It
- 20:21Speaker 1: was a seamless transition late eight o'clock local time when
- 20:26Speaker 1: they walked in. I guess I could just tell you caffeine.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I just interviewed wide receiver Justin Jefferson and I asked
- 20:32Speaker 1: him how he's been adjusting. He said, I'm drinking coffee.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I said, but do you ever drink coffee? And he's like, no,
- 20:39Speaker 1: not a fan of coffee. There were actually espresso shots
- 20:41Speaker 1: waiting in the hotel for these players to help keep
- 20:44Speaker 1: them up, and that's the objective as they roll into
- 20:46Speaker 1: the evening. It's been a packed day. But on the
- 20:49Speaker 1: practice field, guess what. Running back Dalvin Cook is not
- 20:53Speaker 1: on the injury report with that shoulder that left shoulder
- 20:56Speaker 1: sub luxation. I talked to him just a few moments ago,
- 20:59Speaker 1: he told me he's feeling great. He's been rehabbing this week,
- 21:03Speaker 1: working on range of motion, shin, working on the strength. Uh.
- 21:07Speaker 1: He's good to go heading into the weekend. The one
- 21:09Speaker 1: we're watching, though, is that Darius Smith. He's questionable, actually,
- 21:12Speaker 1: Kevin O'Connell telling us he has a game time decision
- 21:14Speaker 1: with that knee injury. Limited at practice omar, but he
- 21:17Speaker 1: was able to do a whole bunch of things just
- 21:19Speaker 1: in limited capacity. They like the direction he is trending,
- 21:23Speaker 1: but he'll be a game time decision again on Sunday.
- 21:25Speaker 1: As for the st Stacy, they've been there all week
- 21:27Speaker 1: getting their bodies acclimated in a different way. Uh. Meanwhile,
- 21:31Speaker 1: they have their own injury issues to deal with. What's
- 21:34Speaker 1: the latest on the Saints? Okay, let me rip through this.
- 21:38Speaker 1: The quarterback Jamis Winston is doubtful obviously, the back and
- 21:42Speaker 1: the ankle. Michael Thomas is out. The wide receiver Andrew's
- 21:46Speaker 1: Pete starting left guard, he is out with the concussion.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Marcus May starting safety he is out with the rib injury.
- 21:55Speaker 1: And Elvin Kamara questionable. Uh in this game. I don't
- 22:00Speaker 1: think that's anything to be too concerned. About Jarvis Landry
- 22:02Speaker 1: is questionable with that a goal, so a ton of
- 22:06Speaker 1: injuries there, but really the reason that Jamis Winston is
- 22:09Speaker 1: doubtful he hasn't practiced all week is purely medical. That
- 22:12Speaker 1: is important. Head coach Dennis Allen talking today after practice
- 22:16Speaker 1: and saying essentially that really an accumulation of wear and
- 22:20Speaker 1: tear and his body just didn't respond typically set at
- 22:23Speaker 1: the start of every week dealing with these fractures in
- 22:26Speaker 1: his back and the ankle injury. He hasn't felt great,
- 22:29Speaker 1: but later on the week he has essentially bounced back
- 22:33Speaker 1: and so it just didn't happen this week. He's been
- 22:35Speaker 1: rehabbing all week. Andy Dalton, they're highly confident in Omar
- 22:39Speaker 1: to take over Alan saying we love uh the experience
- 22:44Speaker 1: that he brings to the table and uh if he
- 22:47Speaker 1: has called upon they haven't declared it yet. They think
- 22:49Speaker 1: he can get the job done. Well. If it's Andy
- 22:51Speaker 1: Dalton versus Kirk Cousins, we've seen that showdown before in
- 22:55Speaker 1: the UK seven tie when Kirk Cousins Washington. Dalton was
- 23:00Speaker 1: with Bengals and Kirk Cousins in that game set a
- 23:03Speaker 1: record for UK game four hundred fifty eight passing yards.
- 23:06Speaker 1: If we see some fireworks like that, I think we'd
- 23:08Speaker 1: all be interested in that. Stacy Dale's thank you very much.
- 23:11Speaker 1: We'll see you a little bit later in the show.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Speaking of that game, the Vikings, they are facing off
- 23:17Speaker 1: against the Saints this Sunday in London nine thirty a m. Eastern.
- 23:20Speaker 1: But before the game, be sure to tune in to
- 23:23Speaker 1: NFL Game Day Kickoff and catch Colleen Wolf, Willie McGinnis,
- 23:26Speaker 1: Kurt Warner, and Cynthia Freelance Sunday morning starting at seven Eastern.
- 23:30Speaker 1: That's four year so watch for their sacrifice on both
- 23:34Speaker 1: NFL Network and NFL Plus. We can't wait for that. Meanwhile,
- 23:37Speaker 1: let's get you Are Insider Report with Ian Rappaport, Mike Garifolo,
- 23:41Speaker 1: and Tom Pella. There a lot of injuries were keeping
- 23:44Speaker 1: track of right now, including the Patriots quarterback Mac Jones
- 23:48Speaker 1: getting set for that game in Green Bay. What's the
- 23:51Speaker 1: latest on Max health? Ian and Mac Jones dealing with
- 23:55Speaker 1: a pretty serious and painful high ankle sprain and not
- 23:58Speaker 1: practice Wednesday or Thursday, but did make a surprise appearance
- 24:02Speaker 1: a Patriots practice today. Now judging by the the shots
- 24:06Speaker 1: of him, what he was doing in practice. He didn't
- 24:08Speaker 1: move at all. I don't think he took a step
- 24:10Speaker 1: on reporters. For president, he was throwing all those arms
- 24:12Speaker 1: should be fine anyway. I would still expect, based on
- 24:15Speaker 1: what I know, for Matt Jones to not play this
- 24:18Speaker 1: Sunday for the New England Patriots. We'll see what he
- 24:20Speaker 1: ends up being classified as that. I would expect Brian
- 24:23Speaker 1: Hoyer to be their starter. Meanwhile, much different report for
- 24:26Speaker 1: Zach Wilson, the Jets starter. He is off the injury
- 24:29Speaker 1: report after missing the first several games with a bone
- 24:31Speaker 1: bruise and having surgery to trim his meniscus. He was
- 24:35Speaker 1: a fogo this week, no setback at all. He is
- 24:38Speaker 1: now back healthy and off the injury report. Good news
- 24:43Speaker 1: there for the Jets. And then there's Christian McCaffrey, who
- 24:45Speaker 1: didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday deal with a thigh issue.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Did practice today, just told reporters a couple of seconds ago,
- 24:52Speaker 1: I feel great. Coach Matt Rules said he also expects
- 24:56Speaker 1: Christian McCaffrey to play, which I think you're someone who
- 25:00Speaker 1: maybe has him in fantasy or something like that. That's
- 25:02Speaker 1: probably some good news. Meanwhile, for the Detroit Lions. They're
- 25:05Speaker 1: getting ready for a showdown with the Seattle Seahawks. Tom
- 25:08Speaker 1: a couple of big names on their injury report. What's
- 25:11Speaker 1: the latest on DeAndre Swift? DeAndre Swift not expected to
- 25:14Speaker 1: play in this game, Omar Dan Campbell, the head coach,
- 25:16Speaker 1: said he is probably out for this week. Not a surprise.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Had been going this direction. Swift suffered a shoulder injury
- 25:23Speaker 1: last week at Minnesota. He had already been dealing with
- 25:25Speaker 1: an ankle injury. Lions of their by coming up in
- 25:28Speaker 1: a couple of weeks, so the thinking is just give
- 25:30Speaker 1: Swift a little bit of time here, heal up and
- 25:33Speaker 1: hope he is rolling when they get back on the
- 25:35Speaker 1: field after the by. Meanwhile, their wide receiver i'm On
- 25:38Speaker 1: Ross st Brown also out. According to Dan Campbell, st
- 25:42Speaker 1: Brown turned an ankle in the game against Minnesota, went over,
- 25:45Speaker 1: got retaped, came back into the game, didn't entirely look
- 25:48Speaker 1: at like himself. So on Monday he wonder went a
- 25:50Speaker 1: battery of tests. I was told that mostly the results
- 25:53Speaker 1: of those were encouraging. There's not some major structural issue,
- 25:56Speaker 1: nothing that should be long term. So this absence for
- 25:59Speaker 1: arm On Ross st Brown should not be something that
- 26:01Speaker 1: extends a long time into the season. Me out for
- 26:04Speaker 1: the Atlanta Elkins Cordarrell Patterson. They're running back the offensive
- 26:08Speaker 1: player of the Week in the NFC this week, was
- 26:10Speaker 1: listed as rest the past couple of days. Got back
- 26:13Speaker 1: on the field today, limited in practice because of what
- 26:16Speaker 1: the Falcons say is a knee issue. He is officially
- 26:19Speaker 1: listed as questionable for Sunday against the Browns. Somar we
- 26:22Speaker 1: have Brown's defense that may or may not have Myles
- 26:25Speaker 1: Garrett after that car accident earlier this week, Mike, what's
- 26:28Speaker 1: the latest on the brown star pass rusher. Well, let's
- 26:32Speaker 1: start with the non football stuff, because that's the more
- 26:34Speaker 1: heavy stuff and the stuff that needs to be addressed.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Myles Garrett, speaking to the media for the first time
- 26:38Speaker 1: since that car accident, said it was a wake up
- 26:40Speaker 1: call for him regarding his driving habits and will be
- 26:44Speaker 1: a safer driver moving forward. He also said he had
- 26:46Speaker 1: a gardening angel on his side to make sure that
- 26:49Speaker 1: he was not injured. Remember, he was wearing his seatbelt,
- 26:52Speaker 1: so that was a good thing and a good decision
- 26:55Speaker 1: for him and certainly contributed to his safety. As for
- 26:59Speaker 1: his football status, like I said, he is questionable. He
- 27:01Speaker 1: said it's gonna be up to the medical staff whether
- 27:03Speaker 1: he goes. He's got arm issues, he had a laceration.
- 27:07Speaker 1: He said he popped bud blood vessel in his eye.
- 27:11Speaker 1: He's got some blood still in his eye, but he
- 27:13Speaker 1: says no problem with his vision. So we will see
- 27:15Speaker 1: about his status for Sunday. But Garrett saying that he
- 27:18Speaker 1: feels very fortunate to be a live and he should
- 27:22Speaker 1: so let that be a wake up call for everyone,
- 27:24Speaker 1: not just Miles Garrett. Elsewhere, on the injury front, the
- 27:28Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills have had a series of injuries in their
- 27:31Speaker 1: secondary and you can add one more. It's the guy
- 27:33Speaker 1: that just arrived, veteran cornerback Xavier Rhodes. Sorry, Tom, x
- 27:38Speaker 1: Xavier Rhodes. Tom told me you have to pronounce the
- 27:40Speaker 1: x x Xavier Rhodes. Uh. He has a hamstring issue.
- 27:44Speaker 1: He will not play. He was supposed to be part
- 27:48Speaker 1: of the active roster this coming Sunday, because the Bills
- 27:51Speaker 1: are so banged up back there. They've lost Micah Hide
- 27:54Speaker 1: and a bunch of other cornerbacks. However, a bit of
- 27:56Speaker 1: good news, and this is great considering the scene on
- 27:59Speaker 1: that Monday night game recently Dane Jackson said that the
- 28:02Speaker 1: plan is for him to play. Remember, he was taken
- 28:04Speaker 1: off in an ambulance, had full movement of his extremities
- 28:09Speaker 1: and everything, despite the fact that he went to the
- 28:11Speaker 1: hospital that night. In that game against the Titans. Uh so,
- 28:14Speaker 1: Dane Jackson expected to be back on the field. That's
- 28:16Speaker 1: good news for the Bills as far as secondary because
- 28:19Speaker 1: they need all the help that they can get. And
- 28:20Speaker 1: also great news for Jackson. He's gonna be back on
- 28:22Speaker 1: the field, ready to go. Time now for one more thing,
- 28:29Speaker 1: and backed by popular demand, it is the insiders, he
- 28:33Speaker 1: and Mike and Tom, and we have learned our lesson.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Tom is going last in this segment, so Ian, we'll
- 28:39Speaker 1: start with you. What's your one more thing? I'll be fast.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Unlike those two idiots. Kadarius Tony, the giant receiver they're
- 28:47Speaker 1: expecting so much from the finally get on the field
- 28:50Speaker 1: this season. Already ruled out another week without Kadarius Tony. Meanwhile,
- 28:54Speaker 1: Keenan Allen still doing with the hamstring injury. Not spotted
- 28:57Speaker 1: a Chargers practice. Not a good sign. Not good for
- 29:00Speaker 1: a couple of those receivers. Mike, what's your one more thing?
- 29:03Speaker 1: The Ravens have some bad injury news. How about some
- 29:06Speaker 1: good news on that front. Jason Pierre Paul, he will play.
- 29:10Speaker 1: If you thought he was washed up because of how
- 29:11Speaker 1: he played last year, he told reporters that he had
- 29:13Speaker 1: a torn rotator cup and biceps damage, basically playing with
- 29:16Speaker 1: just one arm last year. Well, JPP. If he can
- 29:20Speaker 1: get to the playing the way he did in that
- 29:22Speaker 1: Super Bowl run for Tampa, obviously a good sign for Baltimore. Tom,
- 29:25Speaker 1: what's your one more thing? I'm a happy birthday David
- 29:30Speaker 1: back tr the Packers left tackle, is thirty one years
- 29:33Speaker 1: old today and his buddy Aaron Rodgers had a little
- 29:36Speaker 1: surprise for him at lambeau Field. That's a stadium tour.
- 30:00Speaker 1: That's just some people who paid to come walk around
- 30:02Speaker 1: the stadium and Aaron Rodgers wants you to sing Happy birthday,
- 30:05Speaker 1: left tackle. Let's cool. Imagine those people on that tour
- 30:07Speaker 1: getting to experience that. That's pretty remarkable lambeau Field. Any
- 30:11Speaker 1: times they just see Tom, David box pr have a
- 30:14Speaker 1: great day. Everybody enjoyed the game. NFL Now is a
