- 1:09Jonathan: Hello, Dork Squad.
- 1:11Jonathan: I'm Jonathan Cormur, and you're listening to Dork Tales Storytime, the podcast for kids and their pop culture loving grown-ups.
- 1:23Theme Song: It's a beautiful day for a story, adventure, and glory, new friends and old ones too.
- 1:30Theme Song: It's an excellent day to get swept away in a tale, so let us regale you definitely have our work cut out for us.
- 1:47Redge: I would say so.
- 1:49Jonathan: Are you sure this is the house?
- 1:52Redge: I followed the instructions to the letter.
- 1:54Redge: Although a good friend Hogenstein left fairly cryptic directions.
- 1:59Redge: Let me see.
- 2:00Redge: He wrote Dear Reginald, greetings.
- 2:04Redge: I hope you are enjoying this most gloriously gloomy season.
- 2:09Hogenstein: I'm writing to you because you are a most accomplished and reputable hedgehog.
- 2:14Hogenstein: You remind me of me, a hog of some acclaim, known for my studies of the strangest of sciences.
- 2:22Hogenstein: But to the point at hand, it is a creative and adventurous mind like yours that I'm after.
- 2:29Hogenstein: I wish to make use of an old home that's been in my family for generations.
- 2:34Hogenstein: It is called Raven's Roost.
- 2:37Hogenstein: It was always my mother's dream to transform it into a bed and breakfast for the magical and mysterious residence of the Foreshadow.
- 2:47Hogenstein: Being a scientist with my head always in my work, I have not yet put my attention to it.
- 2:53Hogenstein: I could use your creative genius, your love of life, your joie de vivre, as it were.
- 3:01Hogenstein: Please will you raise this old home from its eternal slumber and breathe new life into its dusty halls?
- 3:10Hogenstein: To find it, step into the fogs of the Foreshadow and think of something spooky scary that sends tingles down your spine.
- 3:21Hogenstein: Turn right three times and then take exactly 235 steps.
- 3:27Hogenstein: Finally, look at your companion and say, Boo! And the home will appear before your very eyes.
- 3:38Hogenstein: Thank you for reading my letter and considering my request.
- 3:42Hogenstein: I do hope the next time I come to Raven's Roost, I will be able to declare, It's alive, it's alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive.
- 3:54Redge: And it's signed, yours most maddeningly and maniacally, Hogenstein.
- 4:01Jonathan: Wow.
- 4:01Jonathan: Well, he really believes we can make this place shine, which is hard to do being in the Foreshadow.
- 4:10Redge: I, for one, believe in us too, without hesitation or doubt.
- 4:14Redge: There may be cobwebs in all of the windows, there may be a chilly and mysterious fog hanging over everything,
- 4:22Jonathan: and a very weird overgrown garden surrounding a bubbling bog.
- 4:26Redge: And strange moss growing up the walls and a bunch of broken boards and a door that's hanging off its hinges.
- 4:37Jonathan: Did you see a shadow pass by the upstairs window?
- 4:40Redge: Okay, okay, so it has a lot of uh character.
- 4:44Redge: But we can turn this place into the best bed and breakfast the Foreshadow has ever seen.
- 4:51Redge: The only bed and breakfast the Foreshadow has ever seen, but uh you know what they say, blaze the trail.
- 4:57Jonathan: Well, I'm willing to try.
- 5:00Redge: That's the spirit.
- 5:02Jonathan: Maybe don't mention spirits.
- 5:05Redge: Come on, Jonathan, let's go inside.
- 5:09Jonathan and Redge: Ah
- 5:12Redge: What was that?
- 5:14Jonathan: Oh, I think it was just that raven up there on the roof.
- 5:18Redge: Oh just a friendly raven.
- 5:22Redge: Hello, good sir
- 5:25Poe: Beware
- 5:28Jonathan: Did he just say
- 5:30Poe: Beware in there so says I Poe the raven up in the sky
- 5:40Jonathan: Beware of what?
- 5:42Poe: This haunted house where things go jump
- 5:47Redge: Jump
- 5:48Poe: Thump
- 5:49Jonathan: Thump
- 5:51Poe: and bump in the night.
- 5:54Poe: Caw!
- 5:59Jonathan: Not bump in the night!
- 6:07Redge: We're going to be fine.
- 6:09Redge: It's nothing to worry about.
- 6:11Redge: Look, I've got a mop and a dream!
- 6:15Poe: Legends say the roost is full of spirits, ghouls, frights.
- 6:22Poe: Would not be I that would go inside and be within their sights.
- 6:29Jonathan: Uh Redge What do we do if this place is full of spirits, ghouls, and frights?
- 6:38Redge: I'm sure it's not so bad.
- 6:40Redge: Thank you very much, Poe, for the warning.
- 6:43Redge: But I think we'll step into Raven's Roost and begin our work.
- 6:48Poe: Ah the hedge of hog and human will not accept defeat.
- 6:55Poe: Certain no trick awaits them only a lovely treat.
- 7:01Poe: But when the bell tolls midnight, be sure your work is done, or it will be the ghosties who are having all the fun.
- 7:19Jonathan: And there he goes.
- 7:21Redge: Very polite of him to give us a heads up.
- 7:24Redge: Now, let's get started, shall we?
- 7:28Jonathan: Okay, but let's be sure to leave before midnight.
- 7:31Jonathan: Just in case.
- 7:39Redge: Wow.
- 7:40Jonathan: This place is huge.
- 7:43Redge: It's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.
- 7:47Jonathan: Look at this grand staircase.
- 7:50Redge: Can't you just imagine a little concierge desk right at the bottom so people can check into their rooms right when they walk in?
- 7:58Jonathan: Oh, that will be perfect.
- 8:00Redge: Oh, and these old floors are beautiful.
- 8:03Redge: Just a little polishing needed.
- 8:05Redge: Uh Jonathan, maybe you can start on that side of the room and
- 8:10Jonathan: Redge, right behind you!
- 8:14Redge: What what is it?
- 8:15Jonathan: Your sponge! It was floating in the air!
- 8:18Redge: Oh, don't be silly, Jonathan.
- 8:20Redge: Sponges don't float in the air.
- 8:22Redge: And look, it's still there in my bucket of soap and water.
- 8:26Redge: Just where it's meant to be.
- 8:29Jonathan: Maybe I was just seeing things?
- 8:31Redge: Most likely.
- 8:32Redge: Now, where was I?
- 8:33Redge: Oh yes.
- 8:34Redge: Jonathan, you will start by clearing the cobwebs over there and
- 8:41Jonathan: it's doing it again!
- 8:43Redge: What?
- 8:44Redge: Now, Jonathan, I don't see any floating sponges.
- 8:51Jonathan: Okay, I know I'm not imagining it.
- 8:53Jonathan: It's floating again.
- 8:55Redge: Jonathan, please focus.
- 8:57Redge: We have much work to do, and not a lot of time to
- 9:00Jonathan: Redge, look out!
- 9:03Redge: Ach! Oh no! The sponge was floating in the air!
- 9:08Jonathan: It dropped back into the bucket so fast that I didn't have time to warn you.
- 9:13Redge: Now my fancy cleaning jumpsuit is covered in suds.
- 9:17Jonathan: Redge, we have more pressing things to worry about.
- 9:20Redge: Well, I don't see how.
- 9:21Redge: I love this jumpsuit.
- 9:24Jonathan: Redge, focus.
- 9:25Jonathan: How did the sponge float on its own?
- 9:29Redge: Our minds must be playing tricks on us.
- 9:30Redge: It's the only answer that makes sense.
- 9:37Jonathan and Redge: Ah!
- 9:38Redge: Everything is floating!
- 9:40Jonathan: Run!
- 9:41Redge: Right behind you!
- 9:43Jonathan: Watch out for that floating globe!
- 9:44Redge: And all of the candles!
- 9:47Jonathan: And all the books!
- 9:49Redge: And my sponge! My beautiful sponge!
- 9:53Jonathan: We gotta get out of this house!
- 9:55Redge: No! We have to fix it up for Hogenstein! I'm not giving up just yet! Come on!
- 10:00Jonathan: But Redge,
- 10:01Redge: Look! There is a lovely sitting room at the end of this hall.
- 10:04Redge: Things are still firmly fixed to the ground in there.
- 10:07Jonathan: Alright, but if I see one more flying sponge, I'm out of here.
- 10:19Redge: See, Jonathan, this room is nice.
- 10:22Redge: Here, take these rags and dust off all of these trinkets.
- 10:26Redge: I will dust the piano in the corner.
- 10:28Jonathan: All the objects are obeying the laws of gravity.
- 10:32Redge: It was just a weird fluke, I'm sure of it.
- 10:34Redge: Now, I can clean off these keys in peace.
- 10:42Jonathan: You know, you're right, Redge.
- 10:43Jonathan: This room is far more relaxing.
- 10:46Redge: Uh I uh I uh
- 10:51Jonathan: And I had no idea you learned to play the piano so well.
- 10:55Redge: Uh the thing is,
- 10:57Jonathan: I mean I knew you were taking lessons, of course, but
- 11:02Redge: Jonathan?
- 11:03Jonathan: Yes, Redge
- 11:05Redge: I'm not playing the piano.
- 11:08Jonathan: What?
- 11:10Redge: It's playing on its own!
- 11:15Jonathan: Redge, are you doing a waltz with your mop?
- 11:20Redge: I can't help it! It it seems to be dancing on its own!
- 11:26Jonathan: And taking you with it!
- 11:29Redge: And one, two, three, one, two, three!
- 11:33Jonathan: Redge, don't count on the beat for the floating mop!
- 11:36Redge: Then I'm not sure what else to do, Jonathan.
- 11:38Redge: I'm just trying to keep uh uh.
- 11:41Redge: And uh I'm getting a little dizzy.
- 11:45Jonathan: Redge, uh, try and spin in this direction.
- 11:48Redge: I'll try, yay, yay, yay.
- 11:51Jonathan: A little closer, a little closer, and yes!
- 12:01Walter: Brilliant idea, covering the floor with soapy water.
- 12:04Walter: I slipped and fell right out of the grasp of my mop.
- 12:07Walter: Although, now I'm even more covered in suds.
- 12:12Jonathan: Alright.
- 12:13Jonathan: A raven warning, objects floating and dancing on their own, a piano playing but no one is sitting at the keys?
- 12:20Jonathan: I'm calling it.
- 12:22Redge: No, there must be some part of this place that isn't
- 12:25Jonathan: haunted.
- 12:26Jonathan: This place is haunted, and we have to leave before
- 12:37Walter: Before the bell tolls.
- 12:45Jonathan: Did you hear that?
- 12:47Redge: Okay, you're right.
- 12:48Redge: I give up.
- 12:49Redge: Let's get out of here.
- 12:56Jonathan: Wait, which way do we go?
- 12:59Redge: I'm all turned around.
- 13:08Walter: Oh me, oh my, oh, how frightening indeed.
- 13:12Walter: Let's see if you can escape using your speed.
- 13:18Jonathan: Come on, Redge, let's just run and hope we find our way out.
- 13:21Redge: I'm right behind you.
- 13:22Redge: I thought the door was just over here.
- 13:26Jonathan: Did we take a wrong turn?
- 13:28Redge: Is it just me, or is this
- 13:29Jonathan: hallway stretching endlessly before us?
- 13:32Redge: I've definitely seen that portrait before.
- 13:34Redge: We aren't getting anywhere.
- 13:37Jonathan: This hallway never ends.
- 13:39Redge: Oh no!
- 13:53Walter: Two more tolls! That makes eight.
- 13:57Walter: Time to clean up and face your fate!
- 14:05Redge: My vacuum!
- 14:06Jonathan: It's coming down the hallway! Redge, get up on my shoulder! We gotta run faster!
- 14:13Redge: I can't believe even my vacuum has turned against me!
- 14:17Jonathan: How are these things moving on their own?
- 14:19Jonathan: Are they possessed?
- 14:21Redge: Wait! You're right, Jonathan! How are they moving on their own?
- 14:33Walter: A mystery with answers that nobody knows.
- 14:37Walter: Like how this hallway just goes and goes and goes.
- 14:49Jonathan: The vacuum is yelling at us.
- 14:51Redge: I don't think it's the vacuum speaking.
- 14:53Redge: Jonathan?
- 14:53Redge: Toss me.
- 14:55Jonathan: What?
- 14:56Redge: Toss me back.
- 14:57Redge: Don't worry, I still have my baking soda.
- 15:01Jonathan: Redge, how is another one of your cleaning supplies going to help?
- 15:04Jonathan: For all we know, your baking soda is going to start singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
- 15:16Walter: The final bell tolls and midnight has arrived.
- 15:21Walter: Now the only question How will you survive?
- 15:32Redge: Just trust me and toss me.
- 15:34Redge: We don't have any more time.
- 15:36Jonathan: Well, all right.
- 15:37Jonathan: If you insist, here you go!
- 15:42Redge: Cowabunga and hiyah!
- 15:51Walter: Gross.
- 15:53Redge: Aha!
- 15:54Jonathan: Redge?
- 15:54Jonathan: Was that a ghost?
- 15:57Redge: It was! The baking soda revealed their form.
- 16:01Redge: My mother always taught me that you can toss a little baking soda at a ghost and make it reveal its form for just a moment.
- 16:09Jonathan: Huh?
- 16:09Jonathan: I never knew.
- 16:11Redge: So, we saw you, who whoever you are.
- 16:15Jonathan: You might as well just show yourself.
- 16:18Walter: Oh boo!
- 16:20Redge: Ach.
- 16:21Walter: Oops, uh, sorry.
- 16:22Walter: I forget that a ghost saying boo might be a little scary to the living.
- 16:27Jonathan: Who are you?
- 16:28Jonathan: And why have you been chasing us around since we arrived?
- 16:32Walter: The name's Walter P.
- 16:33Walter: Geist, and I believe a little fright is my right when strangers step into my home.
- 16:39Redge: Hello, Walter.
- 16:40Redge: My name is Redge, and this is Jonathan.
- 16:43Jonathan: Hello.
- 16:44Redge: We are not here to harm anyone.
- 16:46Jonathan: We had no idea someone was living here.
- 16:49Redge: Hogenstein said it was abandoned, and that it was his mother's dream to turn Raven's Roost into a bed and breakfast.
- 16:56Walter: Oh, that mad scientist.
- 16:58Walter: He always has his nose in the beakers and his brain in the books.
- 17:02Redge: What do you mean?
- 17:03Walter: It was his mother's idea, all right.
- 17:05Walter: An idea I gave her.
- 17:08Jonathan: Really?
- 17:08Walter: Ah, you better believe it.
- 17:10Walter: She knew me from way back in the day.
- 17:13Walter: I haunted her neighbor's place for a while.
- 17:15Walter: Anyway, I told her I wanted to open a thrilling and bone chilling spot right here in the Foreshadow, for all of my spooky, ooky buddies to enjoy.
- 17:26Walter: It would be one of a kind.
- 17:28Redge: I know that's right.
- 17:30Walter: She told me her family had this real eerie spot by a bog called Raven's Roost and bada bing, bada boo, we went into business together.
- 17:40Walter: Problem is, most folks fear ghosts and won't come to help a ghoul turn an old haunted house into a wicked and welcoming haunted home.
- 17:50Redge: But we're not like most people.
- 17:52Redge: That's exactly what we're here to do.
- 17:55Walter: Sure.
- 17:56Walter: But then you'll take this perfect spot off of yourselves and kick me to the curb.
- 18:03Redge: Gasp! We would never
- 18:06Walter: really?
- 18:07Jonathan: Not at all.
- 18:08Jonathan: We want to help you make this place the B and B you imagined all those years ago.
- 18:14Walter: Well, Jack O Lanterns! That's a horseman with a different head now, isn't it?
- 18:19Redge: It uh is indeed.
- 18:21Redge: You too will help this old specter start the bed and breakfast of his nightmares?
- 18:28Jonathan: Absolutely!
- 18:29Redge: I'm in.
- 18:31Walter: Well, let's get started then, shall we?
- 18:38Jonathan: It looks really great in here, Redge.
- 18:41Redge: It really does, doesn't it?
- 18:43Redge: I'm quite proud of us.
- 18:46Jonathan: And it seems like Walter is thriving as the new bed and breakfast manager.
- 18:55Walter: Hello, this is Walter P.
- 18:57Walter: Geist, purveyor of fun, glee, and frights, and newly dubbed owner and operator of Ravens Roost.
- 19:04Walter: How may I help you on this bootiful morning?
- 19:08Walter: You'd like to book a room for next weekend?
- 19:10Walter: Yes, mm-hmm.
- 19:11Walter: We can do that.
- 19:13Walter: Now we have themed rooms available if you'd like one.
- 19:16Walter: Well, next weekend we have the Sleepy Hollow Hovel, Witch Coven Corner, and the House of Haunts available.
- 19:24Walter: Oh, which one do I recommend?
- 19:26Walter: Well, I must say, I'm pretty partial to a good haunting myself.
- 19:38Redge: Ah yes, Walter will do an amazing job.
- 19:41Redge: I can't wait for Hogenstein to see it.
- 19:45Jonathan: I agree.
- 19:46Redge: Now, I heard Walter put trick or treat cakes on today's breakfast menu.
- 19:51Redge: We have to go get some before they run out.
- 19:54Jonathan: Ooh, what are those?
- 19:56Redge: Well, you order them and get a treat.
- 19:59Redge: Pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries.
- 20:02Redge: Or
- 20:03Jonathan: a trick?
- 20:04Redge: Exactly.
- 20:06Jonathan: What is the trick?
- 20:08Redge: No spoilers, Jonathan.
- 20:10Redge: Come on, let's go to the dining room.
- 20:14Jonathan: Um okay.
- 20:15Jonathan: Sounds uh good?
- 20:17Redge: Trick or treat, time to eat.
- 20:19Redge: I hope I get something sweet.
- 20:36Jonathan: This has been a Jon in character production.
- 20:38Jonathan: This story was written and produced by Molly Murphy and performed by Jonathan Cormur.
