1:23
a pack show Joe Pack with the doh is going to join us in just
1:27
a couple of minutes. But Rick Cavender said, you know you see people
1:30
in the hallway and just grab them in here pretty much, right? Okay?
1:34
Yeah, Rick, Yeah, good morning, big event, big popular
1:38
event coming up Saturday. Yeah. Yeah, annual Phone with the Dome eighthan
1:42
already reltors. Yeah, we're back for the eighth year. It's back on
1:46
the Canoe Boulevard right in front of the state capital between Greenbrier and California.
1:51
And you know, this event is unlike any other craft beer festival in the
1:53
state in that it is a fundraiser for a nonprofit, our nonprofit, Charleston
1:57
Urban Works, And it's a ticket the event, is that right? Yes?
2:00
So what's the deal on? If you go to foam CWV dot com
2:04
you can get your tickets. Now. We are encouraging people to go ahead
2:07
and get their tickets. They are limited this year and so and if you
2:09
buy, if you buy now, you won't have to pay five dollars more
2:13
at the door or excuse me, at the gate there's no door, but
2:16
yeah, So fifty five dollars is for the VIP early entry ticket that gets
2:21
you an hour an hour more of drinking if you will, starting at three
2:23
o'clock, not four o'clock. And also you get access to VIP beers.
2:30
If you go to foam CWV dot com, the beer list is there and
2:34
the VIP beers are marked, especially with a little icon to show you which
2:38
ones are available just to those folks wearing that gold VIP wristband. The general
2:43
admission ticket is forty five dollars and that gets you access starting at four o'clock.
2:46
The event runs until seven. Where are your vendors from? You mentioned?
2:50
It's all over all over and we've we've always focused on Appalachian beers,
2:54
West Virginia beers, but it's not just that. There are bears from all
2:58
over the country that are being featured here all and mostly Kraft beers, but
3:01
there certainly are some domestics for those folks who love a good bud light are
3:05
a good course light mic culture that'll be on tap as well, but the
3:07
majority are those craft beers for those folks who are there, and we get
3:10
so many people from out of state. We've had people come from sixteen different
3:15
states to attend this event in the past over the course of the last eight
3:17
years, which is great because people come and they'll they'll kayak for the weekend
3:22
or right Whitewater Raft when they come to Charleston because they know this event's coming
3:24
up and they'll stay here, they'll go out to eat afterward, they'll spend
3:28
money here in the capital city. It's just a really great sort of bookend
3:32
if you will, for events season to start here in Charleston. What do
3:36
you use the money for for urban works? Great question. So, as
3:39
you know, we we just rebranded we used to the Charleston Main Streets.
3:43
Our mission is fully focused on urban economic and community development in the urban neighborhood
3:49
business district, so that's mostly the East End and the West Side. We
3:51
do partner with the Downtown Charleston Association on some things sometimes, but west mainly
3:55
focus on the East End and the west Side. So that's program implementation.
3:59
As far as our facade grant program for small businesses, our Business Advancement Initiatives,
4:04
Shop local initiatives. This money goes toward having the funds to implement these
4:10
programs. Right. So you know, we are a small nonprofit organization.
4:14
We like to think we do really good work being as small as we are.
4:16
In this event not only showcases our work, but certainly the small business
4:20
community and the best Really frankly, the Capital City has offered events, outdoor
4:26
events, whether it's important. Man, weather looks really good for Saturday.
4:29
I'm so happy it's looking right now. Partly sunny in seventy seven is the
4:32
high. I'm hoping that. I'm hoping that it is a big nerve wracking
4:36
experience whenever you're planning an event this large. We did have it. We
4:40
did have it one year where fom with the known was it rained all day.
4:44
I've never seen so many people in Poncho's drinking beer in my life.
4:46
I mean, people still came out. It was a successful event. So
4:49
I think rain or shine people come to this event. But it is looking
4:53
pretty good. So okay, the details once again, Rick Foam CWV dot
4:57
com. That's where you can buy tickets and you can also find more information
5:00
not on the phone at the dome Facebook page. Okay, good to see
5:02
you. Thanks for flexibility, sir, of course, yeah, thanks for
5:05
having me. All right, good retrial Cavin. We're going to go right
5:09
to Joe Pack with the d O H. Joe Pack is uh, he's
5:14
the top ops engineer. Is that Is that fair Joe to call you that?
5:18
Fair enough? Really? My my challenge is for the operations of our
5:25
organization, specifically with the maintenance of our roadways yea uh, and and how
5:30
that relates to our our everyday travelers. And so yeah, I'm one of
5:35
one of our top engineers that we have several all right, and Joe Pack's
5:39
with us jeff Jenkins filling in for Dave Allen on five at E LAB.
5:43
I wanted to talk to Joe because, you know, being in the news
5:46
business, I'm an inquisitive guy. You guys get out information, I mean.
5:50
And I've been watching this Jefferson road project like right from the beginning,
5:55
because I'm like thousands of other people, I drive Jefferson right right, and
6:00
so I've watched it and just give me a status updates. It's really starting
6:04
to come along absolutely, So what we're seeing out there is a is a
6:11
culmination of the vision that was put together years ago with the Roaster Prosperity Program,
6:15
which is addressing projects such as Jefferson Road that had had been planned and
6:23
thought about for years, but the ability to construct it was never there.
6:27
And what we've been able to do is to really facilitate that. And and
6:30
as I always mentioned, you know, we we're rehab in a house while
6:34
people live in it. And what's happening there on Jefferson Road is people can
6:40
drive the road as you do, and you see our work every day and
6:44
you see the improvements. And sometimes it starts off slow, it starts off
6:46
messy, and just seems like a lot of dirt and disruption. But at
6:50
this point we are we are seeing that that proverbial light at the end of
6:56
the tunnel on that project, and and it's one of several of our larger
7:00
projects that fit under that program that we're seeing to come to a completion soon.
7:05
I want to drive down just a little bit Joe On on the Jefferson
7:09
Road. So if so say that I'm a quarter ge to take a left
7:13
and I'm coming down Jefferson Road, I can start to see, and you're
7:16
the engineer, so you can tell me. I can kind of start to
7:19
see now to the right, what the new road's going to look like,
7:24
right, correct, And that's the you know, there's been a lot of
7:29
developments and early on it was probably tough to see what the final vision.
7:32
But we are on the last steps of that project, and it will be
7:38
transitioning traffic onto from existing surfaces to new surfaces so we can do other expansion
7:46
and that's going to happen over the over the next round ten to twelve months
7:49
before it's complete. But yeah, everyone should be able to look around while
7:55
they're driving in the area to see, you know, the fruits of a
7:58
lot of hard work being done and and be able to see the final vision
8:01
of how the whole road way and the intersections will will function. Joe Pick's
8:07
with us from the Duho. I would imagine what's going to happen there.
8:09
And again, you guys are the engineers. Is that what we see taking
8:15
place on the right hand side, if you're heading down the hill, the
8:16
traffic will eventually be shifted there. Then they'll work on the left hand side.
8:20
Is that that's kind of a crude way to describe it. That's probably
8:22
what's going to happen, right, correct, The northbound lanes will be paved
8:26
this summer, and then we will transition all traffic onto that road, onto
8:33
that surface so that we can do other parts of the project. And when
8:37
the new bridge is completed, will be moving on to that so that the
8:39
roundabout construction can begin, which will be the final step of the process to
8:45
make it fully functional for how it was designed. Okay, so let's talk
8:48
about the new bridge that goes over to Trace Fork. So, so how
8:52
do you do that intersection? What would that be the finality? What would
8:54
that intersection look like in the end, So it will be a signalized intersection
9:03
as it is today, and when it's completed, it will some of the
9:07
limitations we have placed now will be removed. Uh. And that's simply because
9:11
you know, when we're transitioning from from the new bridge onto six onto Route
9:16
six O one on the Jefferson Road, the construction has to be continued on
9:20
the hillside. When that's complete, that that whole intersection will be more functional
9:26
and it'll be a more fluid movement of traffic through the area. So it's
9:30
going to so they'll they'll in the end, when it's all done, there'll
9:33
be a light there right in what a left turn left turn lane if you're
9:37
coming down, if you're going north, coming down the hill which is actually
9:39
going north. Uh, so there'll be a left hand turn lane to get
9:43
onto the bridge that way, correct, Yeah, and then you'll be able
9:46
to turn right obviously if you're coming up the hill. And uh, you
9:50
know, just from people I talk to, I mean they love that bridge
9:52
already to get over to chase for it. Yeah, yeah, I mean
9:58
that projects itself was already such a relief of traffic congestion that it's only a
10:05
small piece of the piepo for when this is all completed, for people to
10:09
move through that area, it will be it will be so much a more
10:13
fluid, more more more of a situation where you don't have to just come
10:20
to constant stops due to traffic congestion. And and we we've done this in
10:24
stages so that people could utilize the roadways, for instance on or else r
10:30
HL Boulevard, so that they could that could be utilized while Jefferson Road is
10:35
completed, and and again this is it's all part of a stage process.
10:39
So that it cannot the contractor can do their work while we maintain traffic on
10:43
the roadways. How will so if I understand, the roundabout is going to
10:48
be the last piece, that'll be the last thing constructed. So it's a
10:52
stage events. So the new the the overpass bridge that goes over uh can
10:58
All Turnpike and goes over the our road tracks and goes over get kind of
11:03
the creek there area. Uh So that'll be done. So well, will
11:07
you be able to maintain traffic on Conall Turnpike while you're doing the roundabout or
11:11
will that be blocked? And everybody? How how all that work logistically?
11:15
Well, there will there will be no closures. Okay, we will maintain
11:18
traffic through the entire time and and some of it will be will seem like
11:24
I said earlier, you know, we'll build a new section, move traffic
11:26
over to it while we do other work. So it's it's it's very carefully
11:31
staged and laid out so that we are disruptions to the normal traffic flow is
11:35
minimized. However, we can eliminate it simply because we're doing a significant amount
11:41
of work and and we will do everything we can to notify the public when
11:48
those transitions are coming up, and so they can they can expect that,
11:52
and it's not just a shock that one morning when you come to work that
11:54
you're doing something that you're not accustomed to. Is the roundabout going to be
11:58
right un kind of underneath the new bridge or is it little? Is it
12:03
a little more down toward the toward the railroad crossing? Where's kind of the
12:05
roundabout? The specifics on that I don't have, okay to explain and you
12:13
and unfortunately you probably know that area way more than I do something because you
12:18
utilize them more than But one thing that will happen is that roundabout will will
12:22
allow for those that are accustomed to using a roundabout. It changes any any
12:31
existing traffic conditions to such a more manageable flow, and it reduces accidents once
12:37
everyone becomes a customer used to driving it, because it just allows traffic to
12:43
never have to come to a stop. And we've utilized these all throughout the
12:46
state and we really expect this to be a significant game changer for that area.
12:52
M HM and Joe Pack's with us with the deal, H and Joe
12:54
and I think people might be surprised too. How much traffic. I mean
12:58
a lot of that track I think coming down Jefferson Road, which is coming
13:01
north toward I sixty four toward Macorcor Avenue, A lot of the try to
13:05
go straight through there, so they'll be up on the bridge, right,
13:09
I mean so that I mean that's where that's where the major part of the
13:11
traffic will be. Correct and differentiating those travel paths for where people are intended
13:18
to go is really the core of our engineering section. It's figuring out where
13:24
the traffic patterns are, where the drivers are wanting to go, and then
13:28
facilitating that so that someone doesn't have to have a difficult time to get from
13:33
point A to point B. Okay, and always the question for the duhs,
13:37
when is this going to be done? I think you mentioned it a
13:41
couple of minutes ago, right. A lot of the changes we're going to
13:43
be seeing are going to be having late summer and early fall, and then
13:46
the final completion of the project. We have it scheduled and expected to be
13:52
done in late spring early summer of twenty twenty five, so we are literally
13:56
seeing the end of the program and the fire well touches being put on this
14:01
project. It to be fully functional for the public to utilize and see where
14:05
their tax dollars went. Okay, let's go west a little bit down to
14:09
the Donald Leg Bridge, the bridge project that's the Nitro project. This goes
14:15
into Putnam County. Wow, what a what a major project that's been.
14:18
And the most significant thing has happened in the last few weeks that you've been
14:22
able to open two new lanes of the second new bridge, the second big
14:26
bridge that you built over the Canal River. Two new lanes of that have
14:28
opened up, correct, And it is it is really an exciting time for
14:33
us. A lot of blood, sweat and tears has been poured into these
14:37
projects, especially this one. It is it is one of the largest projects
14:41
we had as far as as far as the Roads to Prosperity program went.
14:45
Uh. It is going to improve a major congestion area that exists just right
14:52
here in the in the Charleston to Huntington area. And that project is even
14:58
further along than the Differson Road project. And and people are really going to
15:03
be seeing the final final steps being performed out there so that we can actually,
15:07
you know, excitedly be able to get out of there so that the
15:11
public can utilize and and be able to enjoy all of the improvements that we've
15:16
been able to make on the road. Joe, no one's ever been excited
15:18
about the the eastbound merge. I mean that's no one's ever been excited about
15:24
that. But what's if I'm right on this, Once the both bridges are
15:28
fully operating like you've intended, you know, when everything's done, that'll be
15:33
a long entrance tramp right the correct to come on and so you'll be able
15:37
to you'll be able to merge because it'll be a really long entrance trap off
15:41
one whole lane going eastbound. Yes, actually we yes that that issue that
15:46
that we we all dealt with for the last couple of years will be will
15:50
be removed and it will be a merge on and off to allow the traffic
15:56
to to be able to move smoother and and also to just to improve the
16:00
overall safety of the area driving in on that route. It's a little bit
16:04
like maybe somewhat like I mean when you get off at Dunbar, right,
16:07
I mean, I mean you get in that far right lane and you can
16:11
be in that exit lane for I don't know how far that is, but
16:12
that's kind of what it's going to be like. Correct And again, I
16:17
mean we ask everyone to when this happened, to still drive cautiously and to
16:22
allow everyone to adjust to the new traffic pattern. But it will be a
16:26
major improvement over what's been there over the last two years. During construction,
16:30
a lot of people have thought about the big bridges, which that's the huge
16:33
part. But you've had to do because people, yeah, sometimes we drive
16:37
away. Oh that was a bridge, Yeah, I mean the bridge that
16:38
goes over Route twenty five. I mean the couple two bridges that go over
16:41
Route track. You had to build two new bridges there, right, We
16:45
built new bridges. We rehabbed a bridge, the one over West Rginia twenty
16:49
five. We rehabbed it, upgraded and interchange I mean, and actually did
16:56
something that people may not have noticed is that we actually did what we refer
16:59
to is rebalization of a concrete sub base and repaving, which will make the
17:04
asphalt more sustainable. And that reflected cracking that we get when we have pavement
17:11
over an asphalt, I mean over a concrete sub base. I'm sorry that
17:15
that'll be remedied. And so what it will do was that it'll make it
17:18
a smoother road surface over a longer amount of time. And yes, this
17:22
project has been there was so many other issues with this besides just a bridge
17:27
construction or a bridge rehab. There was so many other steps involved that at
17:33
times it felt like that you we would be driving in that in that traffic
17:37
control forever. But that project is even further along than the Jefferson Road and
17:42
we are, I'll just jump ahead on one of your questions. We're anticipating
17:45
that project to be completed late fall this year, and that's extremely exciting for
17:52
us simply to be able to then monitor the flow of the traffic and see
17:57
if all the improvements that we've designed than planned actually are paying off. And
18:03
that gets rid of that last, in my mind, one of the last
18:06
remaining bottlenecks on sixty four. Correct. We really, you know, the
18:11
beauty of this whole of the whole Roads Prosperity program is we were able to
18:15
address issues that, like I mentioned earlier, that have been prevalent and been
18:21
a problem for all of us for years or even decades. And this will
18:26
be one of the most significant impacts, especially for the daily drivers, right
18:30
and just to be able to see that coming in in the morning or leaving
18:33
in the afternoon is usually when we see the biggest congestions in that area.
18:37
That we expect that to be a much less congested area, a much smoother
18:42
transition for the public, and it'll actually make their life a little bit easier
18:47
and coming in and going from work. All right, two more questions.
18:49
I'm going to let you go. So this has been this has been the
18:53
road segment. Now Joe Pack with the h's with us. The new exxit
18:59
that you're building just west of what just west of Hurricane, the new exit
19:03
there, and that's that's kind of coming along too. Oh absolutely, yeah.
19:07
I mean we are in the midst of our of our construction season.
19:11
That's why it's always, you know, so exciting coming out of winter because
19:15
all these all these projects either resume or they start, and and our job
19:22
is to be, as I always like to say, a welcome nuisance on
19:25
the roadway because when we're there, we're there to make the roads better.
19:27
We're made we're there to make the commutes better. And and and it's just
19:32
one of of hundreds or thousands of projects we have going on in the state.
19:36
And we're very excited about all of them. Yeah, and then the
19:37
Huntington project, which I know unfortunately is behind just I mean, it's a
19:41
huge project too, and I know you guys want to get that done,
19:45
but it's I think I think it's it's kind of behind schedule, right,
19:48
it is, and and you know, our our the issue that we have,
19:52
and it's it's it's a little bit of always a challenge, is that
19:56
there's always things that come up on a project. You know, even even
20:00
the greatest design can have an issue during the project that we have to address.
20:04
And that project ended up with a few that put us that extended our
20:08
schedule out farther than what we had anticipated or happy with. However, we
20:12
are we are pushing as hard as we can to get that completed because again,
20:18
that allows us to move on to other projects and other parts of the
20:19
area and the state that can make us, you know, a serious impact
20:25
on how we all utilize our roadways. Okay, Joe, thank you.
20:30
I just hit you with a bunch of stuff. So I appreciate, appreciate
20:33
you answering the questions and we look forward to these things being done too.
20:37
All right, Joe, appreciate it, Thanks for the time. Thank you
20:40
all right, Joe Pick one of the top operations guy there at the State
20:47
Division of Highways and thanks to the Highways folks who hooked him up with us
20:51
this morning. Jeff Jenkins here in for Dave Allen. Jeff Patty is my
20:53
producer. We took a little long segment there because I just wanted to hit
20:57
Joe with a bunch of those things. And we're going to talk about a
21:00
very local event, very successful event that's been around for a long time.

satisfying they are. The chicken strips are amazing. They're always feeling tender and

is the last bite. The last bite is nice and juicy, and it's

23:47
you filling in for Dave Allen today in the Parmar Store studios. And thanks
23:52
to all of our sponsors and Dave. We'll be back on Friday. Understand
23:56
that's that's the word. So Coop is in tomorrow, but I wanted to
24:00
bring these folks in from CMC Vendelia Health to talk about a in the CMC
24:06
Foundation, to talk about a great event that happens here every year and that
24:12
is Run for Your Life. And I've participated in that. I will.
24:18
I can't run five miles right now. I ran a couple of miles this
24:21
morning, but I guess you could come and run and walk, right,
24:22
you can do the combo. But I'm going to introduce our guests and go
24:26
to let them introduce themselves as we get started this morning and start on my
24:30
left, Good morning, everybody. I am to Marek Gilmore. I work
24:33
for the CMC Foundation. I'm a development officer and I'm the race director for
24:37
the Run for Your Life. Okay. And to my right, yeah,
24:40
good morning, thanks for having us. This is Brian Cummings. I'm the
24:41
president of the CMC Foundation, and we're thrilled to be with you this morning.
24:45
Yeah, and it is. It really is a great event. I'll
24:48
let you start to may about kind of the history of this and what it's
24:52
all about and and why we do it. Well, the reason why we
24:56
do it is for colorrectal cancer awareness and prevention. Are. I'm going to
25:03
let Brian talk about the history, but I'll tell you why the whys.
25:06
West Virginia is becoming really increasingly in the amount of corectal cancer awareness or cancers
25:14
in the state. So West Virginia ranks second for the highest rate of corectal
25:18
cancer per one hundred thousand people, and they are estimating that in twenty twenty
25:26
four that corectal cancer will be the leading cause of cancer deaths in men under
25:30
the age of fifty and the second among women of the same age. So
25:34
that's our why. And so it's important for everybody to get screened. So
25:40
this raises awareness about screening. Brian, it raises and it's fundraiser, but
25:44
it raises, you know, one of the big things that raises awareness about
25:47
it. Yes, it does. And a little bit of the history.
25:49
This is the twentieth year of the race itself. It's about the fourteenth year
25:55
that the CMC Foundation has headed under management. A group of local community members
25:59
started this race in honor of one of their friends who passed away, Jody
26:03
Jibden. And obviously, as we've lost individuals to the disease over the years,
26:07
we've tried to recognize others that have been engaged with us Chris Stademan most
26:11
recently, someone that a lot of our listeners know about. Both of those
26:15
gentlemen. But we've been doing this to raise that awareness level as to marriage
26:21
is touched on. This is a disease that's impacting too many people in our
26:23
community. And so what the CMC Foundation does with the funds raised is allocate
26:27
those back to do awareness events and then help cover screening costs for individuals that
26:33
are being treated at the CMC Cancer Center. And yeah, I mean it's
26:37
a great effort to get to kind of top of mind because we just lose
26:41
too many people right to marab because of this, absolutely, and it is
26:45
the most treatable cancer that's out there once you know about it. And so
26:48
prevention is getting screened is the most important thing, Okay, And so people
26:55
are signing up I'm assuming, right, Brian going to the website different thing
27:00
and signing up and getting ready to go. We are just a little over
27:03
a week away from the start line, as we like to say, with
27:06
all puns intended. But we've got a great race lined up this year.
27:11
We have a group of committee members that have been out solictening in the community
27:15
and helping get this event planned and wanted to recognize those real quick. Okay,
27:19
absolutely, Ted Brady, Orlando, Craighead, Emma Gill, doctor Lucas
27:25
Hamrick, Brad mclahaney, Robbie Queen, John Cybold, Josh Sword, Michael
27:30
Sword, Peggy White and Chip Burling and all of these guys under Tamara's guidance
27:34
have been out raising the money and getting individuals signed up. And so we
27:40
will all meet on the start line on June fifteenth at eight am. We're
27:44
a kickoff event to be a partner with Festival as well, so we've got
27:47
a full day, a fun plan for those individuals that are able to come
27:49
out and join us. Yeah, and a few people on those lists.
27:52
I know Josh, he's a survivor. He is. Yes, you too,
27:56
Sean, Yeah, yeah, exactly so. Yes. And the race
28:00
itself is it's unique because it's five miles correct, right, And it's unique
28:07
because it goes up from the spring Hill Cemetery. That's the tough part of
28:11
it. Yeah, It's not an easy route for those of us that aren't
28:15
runners. So luckily you're right. It starts at head d Riverfront Park,
28:18
downtown Crean's up Court Street, back through Smith and then up through spring Hill
28:23
Cemetery. And one of the things I always try and tell people about the
28:26
route is that if you've never been in spring Hill Cemetery, the view of
28:29
the city is just astounding there. So for those people that can do it,
28:33
we encourage them to. For those people that want to come out and
28:36
join us for a walk, we have a two point five mile walk that's
28:38
a part of the route as well. Yeah, and that's a great option.
28:41
It is it turns around so you're with the runners, although the runners
28:45
start first, but you're the walkers go afterwards, so we don't have any
28:48
accidents. And then the walkers turn around there at the base of the hill
28:52
when you go up Cemetery, so at Farnsworth is where they turn around.
28:55
So it's mostly flat. So it's a good walk, a nice walk through
28:59
downtown. Yeah, and I've been able to run a couple of times.
29:02
And uh, and what I remember about the run is is you're going up
29:07
to spring Hill Cemetery and I don't know if this person does this every year.
29:11
There's a drum there's a drummer there, you know, and he's we
29:14
have four of them. Yeah, okay, Yeah, so that's that it
29:18
either motivates you or you're just trying to shut it out as one one or
29:22
the other. It's it's supposed to be a motivation. Yes, yes,
29:26
they'll get you up that final leg of the hill. Yes, yes,
29:29
exactly. And so how how are sign ups going? Is it look pretty
29:33
good? We're right on target where we were last year. I think we
29:36
had over five hundred people registered last year and over just close to the full
29:41
five hundred that registered participated. You always have some that don't show up on
29:45
the day of, you know, schedules get in the way, so some
29:48
people don't show up. But we had over five hundred last year registered.
29:52
So it's a it's a great event. It's a great family event. If
29:55
you're a walker, you got kids, bring him, If you've got a
29:57
dog, bring them, if you've got a stroller, springham. We're happy
30:00
to have everybody that can participate to participate. Yeah, and the swag's pretty
30:04
good too. Yeah. We've got fantastic draft hit shirts that people are able
30:08
to select or cotton after their preference when they sign up. Tamara's lined up
30:12
some really fun incentives as well. This year. We're going to have Dusty
30:18
from the Dirty Birds out with us on the course and then do you want
30:22
to mention that after? Yeah, so kind of paying homage to when we
30:26
originally started, when they had the bruise downtown the barbecue, so when that
30:33
was started and then that kind of fizzled out, so we kind of brought
30:36
it back with our partner with the four Points and Recovery, so they will
30:41
be providing after the race. Now you have to register, but you get
30:45
two adult beverages and two pork sliders. That Recovery and four Points is providing
30:52
for our participants this year, so it'll be great. It was very well
30:56
received last year, so much so that we were like, you can not
31:00
do it this year. Yeah, And I kind I like where the race
31:03
starts and ends it ends because there's just great seating right there. It had
31:07
that, ye, so now you come across the finish line and there you
31:11
need a break, you know, right after that, and that's a great
31:14
little venue to be able to do that. It is, and we've had
31:17
perfect weather the last two years, so I'm praying that that also happens again
31:19
this year. Yeah, exactly exactly. And again I mean I know.
31:25
It just you work to get top of mind, you know, and this
31:30
is one of those kind of top of mind events. Yeah, I need
31:32
to get tested, I need to do these things. Yeah, it really
31:33
is. And part of the extension of the event really those T shirts that
31:37
we give all of our runners have the correctal cancer awareness language on it,
31:42
so when you see those in the community, we're continuing to touch folks long
31:45
after the event has completed. But it's it is top of mind for us.
31:49
It's top of mind for the same C Foundation and all the patients that
31:52
we're caring for at our cancer center. We want to do everything we can
31:56
to eradicate this as quickly as possible. Yeah, and Brian, I'll give
32:00
you an opportunity here too to I know, the foundations into a lot of
32:04
things. Give me some other things. You guys are work. Yeah.
32:06
So we've got a full summer coming up. Two weeks after the finish at
32:09
the Run for Your Life, we're having a summer lou al and that is
32:14
at the Clay Center. It took place of our traditional black tie affair that
32:17
we held for almost thirty years. When COVID hit we had to take a
32:22
break and then we pivoted to get our friends and donors and philanthropy partners back
32:25
together. So it's a summer Louol super casual shorts, Hawaiian print t shirts
32:31
are encouraged, but it's held outside of the Clay Center and so all of
32:35
those funds that we raised there helped support the clinical and social services at CMC
32:39
Women and Children's Hospital. We also have a golf classic coming up in August
32:44
that also benefits the services at CMC Women and Children's Hospital, a little more
32:47
tailored for our neonatal intensive care unit for our nick you babies. And then
32:52
we finish up our year with our fourth major event, which is a can
32:55
climb at Kennall State Forest. It's a five k trail run two point five
33:00
mile trail hike to support the CMC Children's Advocacy Center, and this is where
33:06
patients, unfortunately in our community, roughly about five hundred last year children were
33:09
screened for physical or sexual abuse, and so the funds that we raise from
33:14
that event cover those costs for those family so that they don't have to pay
33:16
for the care that those kids receive, both clinical and psychological to get them
33:22
through those hardships. I know the CMC Foundation has just really a great history,
33:28
I mean, and it's just a key role because we think, Okay,
33:30
we go to the hospital, but there's so many other things that need
33:35
that support. Correct that happened. Yeah, the full wrap around support is
33:38
what our focus is typically. So we know that our patients can get in
33:42
the door to receive the clinical care that they need, but some of those
33:45
things that aren't covered by reimbursement costs from insurance providers or Medicare or Medicaid.
33:51
The CMC Foundation tries to step in and fill a lot of those gaps and
33:54
it's important for this community. It's one of the needs that we see for
33:58
our patients that struck financially. We're able to provide funding to those areas within
34:04
the hospital that can really envelop them in the care that they need. All
34:07
right, great, thanks for that. And so tomorrow what's people, I
34:10
mean, still got time right to sign up for that, to mention the
34:15
morning of gets a little hectic, So to avoid all of that, we
34:19
are doing a pre race pickup and you can also register and that's on the
34:22
day before, that's the fourteenth, and we do it from three to seven
34:27
at the Cancer Center on the breast Cancer on the Breast Center side. So
34:30
we'll have table set up. People can come up and pick their shirts and
34:34
they can register also that day, So then it kind of takes the hectic
34:38
gits of you know, the day of, it just gets crazy out there.
34:42
We'll have a DJ on the morning of and then like you mentioned,
34:45
we'll have Dusty, So there's a lot of things going on the morning of,
34:47
So if you can do it the day before, it might be a
34:50
little easier for people. Right, And I've used that pickup too, and
34:52
that's it. That's a great option. It's very convenient. And then of
34:55
course you can always register online. You can visit our websit right CAMC Foundation
35:00
dot org. There's a link there directly to the Run for Your Life registration
35:04
page, and that certainly expedites the purpose of getting there and registering early.
35:09
Would have all that information ready and your packet ready to go that Friday and
35:13
or Saturday morning. And you know, we know, if you've run any
35:15
races before, you know you've got the really serious people that are really good,
35:20
and you know, sometimes you get they're passing you up before you get
35:23
that's usually me. You know, I'm not in the lead. I'm like
35:27
getting past, they're already run Spring Hill Mountain and are coming back down when
35:30
I'm going up. You know, what's always entertaining for me is that the
35:32
guys that and women that get there early and they run before they run.
35:37
You know, they're like they're out there running three miles before they even started.
35:38
Yeah, exactly exactly. I think last year the twins that won it,
35:44
it was like twenty some minutes. Yeah, it was a pretty hot
35:49
pace. Wow, that is a high pace. There were two twins and
35:51
they were battling each other the whole way and one beat the other by seconds
35:54
across the finish line. Wow. Wow. But I wanted to say,
35:58
you know, it's really for all comers. If you want to walk,
36:00
you can walk, or if you want a combo, run and run a
36:01
couple of miles, walk up to Spring Hills Cemetery, you know, and
36:06
walk that and then come back down. I mean, that's what's kind of
36:08
cool about it, because that really is that. I mean, you get
36:10
up on top there, and it's really a lot of people say, well,
36:15
I've never been up here. You know, you got you got a
36:16
great look. Not only is the view of downtown. Great, but now
36:20
the cemetery is an arboretum, so you have the history of some of the
36:24
gravestones that are up there, but now the tree markings, it's just a
36:28
really interesting place to be. Yeah, okay, well yeah, a week
36:31
from Saturday. Yes, okay, so folks don't have time. Thanks for
36:36
coming in. I appreciate that. Thanks for having us, thank you for

a great job. I appreciate that. Thank you, Thank you. Okay,
36:45

39:49
in the News Today. One of our lead stories at wv Metro News dot
39:54
com, a WHS network dot com. Just a local mother, Charleston mother.
40:00
Her son was tragically murdered last month Memorial Day weekend and she is reaching
40:05
out because police have had a tough time getting people to cooperate in connection with
40:12
Dimitri Coleman's murder. So we were able to make contact with his mother yesterday
40:19
and she just basically making a personal plea that folks would come forward because she
40:25
believes that they know him. There were a lot of people gathered there.
40:28
There was over on Railroad Avenue, which is over kind of tucked in there
40:30
on the west side. Early morning hours of Saturday, May twenty fifth and
40:37
there, from what we understand what police say, there were a lot of
40:39
people there and Dmitri got into some kind of discussion or altercation with a man
40:45
who, according to witnesses and police reports, grabbed him and shot him in
40:52
the back of the head and then shot him three more times. His mother,
40:57
who we've interviewed and interviewed her yesterday and did a story with her that
41:00
you can read at WV metro news dot com or at WHS network dot com,
41:06
just again making a personal plea that you know, she just can't believe
41:10
that that this person, this man who shot and killed her son, that
41:14
no one knows and that she says, someone needs She believes someone knows him,
41:21
and someone knows where he is. And so she's calling on the public,
41:25
those who are there or those who might know about it, to have
41:29
courage and to uh and to step forward. UH. And so that's what
41:34
that's what she's calling for. And you can read more about that again at
41:38
our website, WV Metronews dot com. Brad mc wheney's coming up. We're
41:43
going to have a couple of things we want to talk to Brad about.
41:45
Happy he's got Metro News talk Line coming up, and Hoppy, if you
41:50
heard some discussion yesterday, there some discussion about some vote totals that just kind
41:55
of raised some eyebrows in Mingo County and a state Senate race, and we
42:00
understand it's not only in the state center race, but maybe a couple of
42:02
other races, and so Hoppy is scheduled to talk more about that today and
42:10
we'll see if there are any formal complaints that are made in connection with that.
42:15
I mean, election results have already been certified, but there's just some
42:20
questions the numbers just kind of just don't look right, and so there's some
42:23
discussion on talk line yesterday about that. I think we can expect some more
42:29
discussion coming up today on that issue. Hoppy's got a couple of guests on
42:35
and he'll be talking about that. Brad Michaelhndy up next here on five any
42:38
WCCHS the Voice of Charleston, and there's going to be a news conference that
42:46
is scheduled for tomorrow by the Governor's office. That'll happen at two o'clock tomorrow,
42:52
and it's on this Boon County case that we've done a lot of reporting
42:55
on other media members have done a lot of reporting on and it's, you
43:02
know, the death of Kennedy Miller, the fourteen year old girl, her
43:07
April death, and then how the state has responded to her case over the
43:10
last couple of years, and the Justice Administration has been has been looking into
43:15
that and now they've scheduled a news conference for tomorrow. Brad Michaelhaney, Metric
43:20
News state wide correspondent, joins me now to talk about that, and Brad,
43:27
yeah, so we'll hear from the administration tomorrow. And this is kind
43:30
of a rarity. I mean, this hasn't happened too much. It's an
43:32
in person news conference, which has been a rarity, and we'll kind of
43:37
see what they've been able to find out on how the state has handled the
43:42
Kennedy Miller case leading up to her death and since then. Yes, and
43:47
it is quite a representation of the Justice Administration participating in this press conference on
43:55
Thursday. However, I don't the governor himself was not listed. He is
44:01
bringing in the experts and it looks like that panel will be led by the
44:06
Chief of Staff Brian Abraham, a former prosecutor at the county level, but
44:10
also representatives of the State Police, of the Department of Human Services, and
44:16
others, And the entire question is Kennedy Miller, fourteen year old of Boone
44:22
County, was removed from the public school system. She was homeschooled for a
44:29
couple of years. Her investigators have said that once she was learning from home,
44:39
that she was rarely seen again outside the home, and her mother and
44:45
grandparents are now criminally charged with child neglect causing death. But there is still
44:52
a question among the school system, the state police who did check on the
45:00
home? And we now know corroborated by the governor, that one of the
45:04
troopers who was concerned went from the home a year ago directly to the local
45:12
Human Services department intended file a referral, and then finally Child Protective Services itself.
45:22
Did they get a referral or not? Were they called by neighbors or
45:24
not? And if so, what did CPS do? So those those three
45:30
entities, the school system, the police, and Child Productive Services if they
45:37
were if they were supposed to serve as a backup representing the public to protect
45:44
this girl's life and well being, who among them dropped the ball is the
45:49
question, and tomorrow may provide more answers, Yeah, and I know there's
45:57
you know, there's Uh. It'll be interesting to see because we know from
46:00
reporting that that state police went directly to the CPS office and Foster and the
46:07
GPS shows they were there for eight minutes, but there's no report on hand,
46:12
and I mean, hopefully we're getting going to get to the bottom of
46:15
all that, right, I mean, what exactly happened. It would be
46:20
very disappointing if all of those people gathered and they have given almost a week
46:25
of notice. I think the notification of this briefing came out on Friday.
46:32
The briefing itself will be on Thursday. It would be it would be very
46:37
disappointing and all letdown if if there were not some resolution of what happened here.
46:46
And you've got to think that there at least will be more elaboration on
46:53
what they know and what they don't know? Yeah, or what you know?
46:58
Or why have them? Why have the briefing? Right? If there's
47:01
not, it looks like, yeah, go ahead. The governor has talked
47:08
about this a couple of times, and at the last briefing he did acknowledge
47:13
that the true there was a trooper who was sent to the home in March
47:19
twenty twenty three, a little more than a year ago, and WCCHS Television
47:23
and probably others had already reported that there was audio and a report that that
47:30
trooper believed that a referral needed to be made. Leslie Rubin, reporter from
47:35
WCHS Television, did a freedom of information request for geographic data of the trooper's
47:43
movement, and it shows that immediately upon leaving the home, the trooper did
47:49
go to the local Human services office. But the you don't I mean,
47:55
he was there for eight minutes. It would be odd to think that he
48:01
didn't go inside or got distracted or forgot what he was going to say,
48:05
I mean, especially after going straight there. But from the outside looking in,
48:08
I don't know that we have any way of knowing. The governor also
48:14
last week, when he was talking about the troopers movements, said, you
48:17
know, who knows what he did. We don't have a record of the
48:22
trooper going inside, or signing in or filing a report. So that's the
48:29
kind of question that I hope can be further elaborated on. There have also
48:32
been questions about Child Protective Service's own record keeping system, which is called path,
48:39
and whether it has the ability to truly and fully keep the do the
48:46
kind of record keeping that is that is necessary for complicated situations and situations involving
48:52
kids all over the state. So these are all things that I think deserves
48:58
some light shed upon them. Okay, So that is at two o'clock tomorrow,
49:02
and as we mentioned, it's in person, and you can count on
49:07
probably one hand how many times that's happened over the last several years. Yeah,
49:13
in persons has not been the Governor's preference, but to me, it
49:16
just seems like there are so many people on this particular news event, you
49:24
know, panelists representing the Governor's office itself, the State Police, Department of
49:31
Human Services, it would I think, just be cumbersome to handle on a
49:36
zoom call. So they're all going to be together in one room, and
49:39
you know, I think that will lend itself to a little bit of back
49:44
and forth and reacting to each other and the ability to elaborate. Brad,
49:46
thanks for a time, appreciate it. Hey, thanks Jeff, take care.
