- 0:29Speaker 3: right side of the table, the interviewer, not the interviewee.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Absolutely, I'll tell you what I feel in my comfortable,
- 0:35Speaker 2: happy place here being the one that drives and asks
- 0:38Speaker 2: all the questions. Your home is a happy place, by
- 0:40Speaker 2: the way, Oh, thank you very much. So quickly, let's
- 0:42Speaker 2: unpack this. It is Home of the Century podcast, Ye
- 0:46Speaker 2: talk me through it. You basically go to stunning homes
- 0:49Speaker 2: and mine was one.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Of them, running homes.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Like it's a lot of place that is. But yeah,
- 0:54Speaker 4: absolutely brought to you by Century twenty one. It's all
- 0:56Speaker 4: about real life assies luck, your good self, and and
- 0:59Speaker 4: buriard of others who have found ways to find their
- 1:02Speaker 4: feet in the property market. And like, let's be real,
- 1:04Speaker 4: it's really hard at the moment, and there's there's so
- 1:07Speaker 4: many different ways to do it, and whilst there's always
- 1:09Speaker 4: been this rhetoric I think of you know, your price
- 1:11Speaker 4: out of the market Australia as impossible, avocado and toast
- 1:14Speaker 4: generation like give up. Now there are still ways to
- 1:17Speaker 4: do it and everyone's got their own story.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And then you, Darren, what do you want to Well?
- 1:21Speaker 2: I was scared to have you in my house, he studied. True,
- 1:26Speaker 2: I was scared to have you in my house because
- 1:27Speaker 2: I was like, he's going to judge it. He was gonna.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I was like, it's kind of like, you know, well,
- 1:32Speaker 2: you know, like someone does interiores, then then you welcome
- 1:36Speaker 2: them into your It's like, you know, a fashion styles
- 1:38Speaker 2: or whatever, and then here's my outfit that I put together.
- 1:41Speaker 2: What's he really think? Yeah?
- 1:43Speaker 1: But he liked it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 1:45Speaker 3: The first time I went to Allison Langdon's house, Yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 3: had me and Matt moranover and her house is pre
- 1:50Speaker 3: renovated and he was cooking. Okay, she was cooking, So like,
- 1:54Speaker 3: I'm like, you have you have really cast iron?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, no, totally, because you invite a chef to
- 2:00Speaker 2: cook for and an unrenovated house for an interior designer. Yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 2: she didn't care.
- 2:06Speaker 3: She was game. You were game. I appreciate it. People
- 2:09Speaker 3: don't invite me into their houses often, and I I
- 2:12Speaker 3: think it's because of my horrible personality. But well maybe
- 2:17Speaker 3: I'm making people nervous of it.
- 2:18Speaker 4: But we gave you the I gave you the opportunity.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I was like, look, we've got Darren Palm. Yeah, you
- 2:22Speaker 4: get some free anterior to give me some no dining
- 2:25Speaker 4: styling advice.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And you were like, I think it's perfect.
- 2:28Speaker 4: It's timeless, it's modern, but it's chic. It's not going
- 2:30Speaker 4: to date. He said, all you know, all the right things.
- 2:32Speaker 4: So well done.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Because we were there then and now I'm here now
- 2:37Speaker 2: I can tell you the real Now tell me what
- 2:39Speaker 2: you really thought. Wow, terrible? Why the fur House? No? Okay,
- 2:45Speaker 2: So the Home of the Century. You go and you
- 2:48Speaker 2: just I guess interview a variety of people me included
- 2:51Speaker 2: about our stories of how you bought a house or
- 2:54Speaker 2: for my episode, we talked about me because I bought
- 2:56Speaker 2: the house at auction. Right, Oh yeah, it's so nerve racked, King,
- 3:00Speaker 2: It was so nerve racking buying at auction. You, Darren,
- 3:03Speaker 2: do them for fun, for just for your for your
- 3:05Speaker 2: TV career. You just take. You get people to build
- 3:08Speaker 2: a house and then see if anyone wants it.
- 3:10Speaker 3: I've got to tell you, I try to keep the
- 3:12Speaker 3: hell away from auctions as best I can. I've made
- 3:14Speaker 3: a friend buy two houses for me at auction because
- 3:17Speaker 3: I don't want to go near them and I'm nowhere
- 3:19Speaker 3: near a block auction ever.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah, you're not, are you. Do they make
- 3:23Speaker 2: you anxious?
- 3:24Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 3:25Speaker 3: How do they not make you anxious? If auctions make
- 3:27Speaker 3: you anxious? Watch the episode Small is on it and
- 3:32Speaker 3: your approach to options and selling and buying and auctions
- 3:36Speaker 3: is absolutely worth seeing. If you want to see Small
- 3:39Speaker 3: as his house. Yeah, yeah, you can see it on
- 3:41Speaker 3: YouTube and Spotify. Yes's house.
- 3:43Speaker 2: They hit the sex room, everybody, they didn't. They didn't
- 3:46Speaker 2: cover the sex room. I didn't show you that. I
- 3:48Speaker 2: didn't show you that one that was that was locked up.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Don't you worry.
- 3:55Speaker 4: That's the thing about real estate. There's no contrived drama.
- 3:58Speaker 4: This is just the reality of trying to own a
- 4:01Speaker 4: home in Australia.
- 4:01Speaker 1: It's stressful, it's drama.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Everybody story totally.
- 4:05Speaker 4: So it's all all just real life experiences and like
- 4:07Speaker 4: for you, you avoided two auctions by selling before the fact.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But you have to buy the house you live in
- 4:15Speaker 1: now at an auction.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I totably did, I totally did. Okay, So Friday afternoon
- 4:18Speaker 2: people might be planning there if they're looking at buying
- 4:20Speaker 2: a house or something at the moment the weekend is
- 4:22Speaker 2: coming open homes, Darren, what would your advice be to
- 4:26Speaker 2: anyone who's looking at a house this weekend? Do you
- 4:29Speaker 2: try to see through someone else's clutter and look for
- 4:32Speaker 2: the bare bones or what's your advice?
- 4:35Speaker 3: I did. That's what I did when I bought my
- 4:36Speaker 3: first apartment. I found something that I knew was great.
- 4:39Speaker 3: I've done all the research, I knew the area, I
- 4:42Speaker 3: knew the value of everything that I couldn't upgrade.
- 4:46Speaker 2: So okay, its.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Location, it's outlook, available light, et cetera. So all the
- 4:51Speaker 3: things that you can't improve onto a property, look for
- 4:54Speaker 3: those things, okay, because everything else you can chan change.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I did notice. By the way, we were thinking
- 4:59Speaker 2: about both about painting our office color block it out
- 5:02Speaker 2: black and you saw the swatches on the wall. Is
- 5:05Speaker 2: that a bold move to make? But should we do it?
- 5:07Speaker 3: Okay? So two things there, Yes, it's only paint, so
- 5:11Speaker 3: you should just go hand with paint because paint is something.
- 5:14Speaker 2: That you can replace easily. Okay.
- 5:16Speaker 3: And also don't paint swatches on your wall. You can
- 5:19Speaker 3: get them off the internet from like Dulux whatever. They
- 5:21Speaker 3: send you a four sheets and you can hold it
- 5:24Speaker 3: up on different walls and see it in different lights.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Okash your floor and on.
- 5:27Speaker 3: There's a little freebe tip for us and they're like
- 5:30Speaker 3: two dollars each.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Okay, And you don't have to worry about painting a wall.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And then nothing looks worse than going to someone and
- 5:35Speaker 2: like they swatched that wall like twelve months ago and
- 5:37Speaker 2: they're still under the paint. Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I hated this myself. You're like, wow, no way, matter
- 5:42Speaker 1: of guests paid anything.
- 5:46Speaker 2: The podcast is called Home of the Century Auction Advantages,
- 5:50Speaker 2: Episode four that's featuring yours truly. Obviously you've done a
- 5:53Speaker 2: lot of stuff with houses, so I thought I would
- 5:55Speaker 2: just lightning round you just some interior design ix. Feel
- 6:00Speaker 2: free both to chime in. I'm going to throw a
- 6:03Speaker 2: design trend at you. You tell me whether or not
- 6:05Speaker 2: you like them or if we're getting rid of them.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Archways were loving archways archway eron Eron. While I respect you, Darren,
- 6:18Speaker 2: what are we saying giving Greece.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Love them too, and they are towards the end of
- 6:23Speaker 3: their trend cycle.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, that's you know, it's okay, you know what,
- 6:29Speaker 2: I'm on.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Board in a Mediterranean environment perfect.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Okay. What about bad faux florals? Should you ever have
- 6:34Speaker 2: fake flowers in the house instead of fresh, real ones?
- 6:38Speaker 1: The pretty good these days?
- 6:40Speaker 3: I'm going to say yes, particularly for open homes, Okay,
- 6:44Speaker 3: particularly if you're trying to sell your house. One of
- 6:46Speaker 3: the best things you can do is have evergreen florals
- 6:49Speaker 3: that aren't going to wilt. Make sure you dust them,
- 6:52Speaker 3: and if you can, put them of out of reach
- 6:55Speaker 3: so that you can look at them but you can't
- 6:56Speaker 3: touch them, and see if you get close enough.
- 6:58Speaker 1: To them, sell your secret by having the feeling.
- 7:00Speaker 2: It's you know what I'm hearing here, Darren Palmer has
- 7:03Speaker 2: fake flowers? Okay? What about Millennial Gray. We're out out
- 7:10Speaker 2: and I have trauma people who and this, Okay, I'm
- 7:19Speaker 2: going to I'm going to call this people who have
- 7:21Speaker 2: like doctor surgery, five thousand K white lights in their house.
- 7:26Speaker 2: It's a crime. He didn't know. It is a crime,
- 7:28Speaker 2: a crime the people who buy the I don't know
- 7:30Speaker 2: why they sell bulbs that are like bright bright white.
- 7:33Speaker 2: There should be a slight yellow tinge to every globe
- 7:36Speaker 2: in your house correctly.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Down light is not your friend of the best of times.
- 7:40Speaker 4: When it's like doctor's surgery. Baron Sorley, I'm also sorry,
- 7:44Speaker 4: sorry is rapped Aarren. But I'm also anti down. Like
- 7:46Speaker 4: any light on the roof, put a lamp, puts lamb that.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Looks straight at me. It just gives me, like, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: a softbox glow.
- 7:54Speaker 3: I'm with the age where I would live my life
- 7:55Speaker 3: by candle light. No, you look great because I live
- 8:00Speaker 3: in candlelight.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Ceiling fans with lights in them, the combo.
- 8:07Speaker 3: No unless they're beautiful, and some of them are, but
- 8:10Speaker 3: the very very few of them.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, what about you go to some people's houses.
- 8:15Speaker 2: It's a generational thing. But they have live life, love artwork,
- 8:19Speaker 2: or it's wine o'clock, or don't talk to me until
- 8:21Speaker 2: I've had my morning coffee in the kitchen.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Put it on the Instagram and leave it there where
- 8:25Speaker 1: it belongs.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Only if I walk into a laundry that says wash
- 8:30Speaker 3: or like a kitchen that says eat like, yeah, I
- 8:33Speaker 3: know how to do that.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, And then last one because obviously I think
- 8:37Speaker 2: you're filming the block at the moment, right, non council
- 8:41Speaker 2: compliant alterations are we Yeah, you're nahing? Nay nay.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Do you want that bill when it comes in and
- 8:47Speaker 1: he neighbor dubs you in?
- 8:48Speaker 4: No, we got dogged in once because someone thought our
- 8:51Speaker 4: outdoor sauna was an unofficial shed until we had to
- 8:54Speaker 4: send a photo of it and.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Go, really, it's not. Yeah, So anyone don't do an
- 9:00Speaker 2: on council compliant alteration.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Not unless you're planned to be there for twenty five
- 9:04Speaker 3: years or something. There's a there's some weird rule. Yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 3: it's been there for a long time.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Your limitations thinks.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Quote don't quote me last question when asked you darn't.
- 9:14Speaker 2: What are we seeing in designer trends at the moment
- 9:17Speaker 2: if someone is going out to buy maybe a lounge
- 9:18Speaker 2: or something this weekend, is there anything that we should
- 9:22Speaker 2: steer away from non council compliant alterations overarchingly?
- 9:30Speaker 1: See what you did that.
- 9:33Speaker 3: It's it's about conscious permanence. Oh, this is the trend
- 9:38Speaker 3: that's emerging. Okay, moments so things that have found, things
- 9:41Speaker 3: that represent you, things that you've like collated from your trips,
- 9:45Speaker 3: things that look like the things that light you up. Yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 3: that's the trend.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Okay, So it never regretted if you love it deep.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Down and if it represents you and and the things
- 9:58Speaker 3: that make your heart sing, and it's absolutely right. And yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 3: boot plays sort of on its way out.
- 10:04Speaker 2: So okay, they go, do not get anything in boot Clay,
- 10:08Speaker 2: avoid it.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Although I saw something at Louis Vauton yesterday Alois Vaitton
- 10:12Speaker 3: book play.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So far you can say that, yeah, okay, Louis Vaitton
- 10:15Speaker 2: or his designer boot Play state is always in if
- 10:18Speaker 2: you yep, okay, they're always exception to rules. That's this
- 10:21Speaker 2: is the thing. This is the thing. Okay. The episode
- 10:23Speaker 2: for Home of the Century podcast. Thanks for coming over
- 10:27Speaker 2: to my house, guys. Thank you were the best guests.
