Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to our continuing conversation on
- 0:03Refine for a Purpose. In our last conversation,
- 0:08we asked a difficult question. Can God trust
- 0:11your integrity? We discovered that integrity
- 0:14is not simply about never failing. Integrity
- 0:17is revealed when our character is tested, when
- 0:20nobody is watching, when temptation comes, when
- 0:24we are angry, when we are hurt, when we have
- 0:26authority, when compromise would be easier. and
- 0:30we discovered that God may not only be preparing
- 0:32the blessing, God may be preparing us for the
- 0:35weight of the blessing, but today I want us to
- 0:38go one step further. Because integrity usually
- 0:41does not collapse in one moment. There is often
- 0:44something that happens first. In an earlier season
- 0:47of Pamoja Ministry, we had a conversation called,
- 0:50When the Strong Get Tired, and we discovered
- 0:53something important. Strong people can become
- 0:56tired. Faithful people can become discouraged.
- 0:59Disciplined people can become vulnerable. People
- 1:02who have survived enormous battles can still
- 1:05experience moments when their defenses are down.
- 1:07But people rarely collapse simply because they
- 1:10became tired. Usually something happens between
- 1:13weariness and collapse. A boundary moves. A compromise
- 1:18is justified. An attitude is excused. A warning
- 1:22is ignored. A conviction is silenced. Something
- 1:26you once resisted. You begin entertaining. Something
- 1:30you once confessed, you begin defending. Something
- 1:34you once considered dangerous, you begin believing
- 1:36you can control. And slowly, a crack develops.
- 1:42The problem with a crack is that initially, the
- 1:45structure can still look strong. The building
- 1:47is still standing. The ministry is still functioning.
- 1:51The marriage is still together. The career is
- 1:53still progressing. The person is still preaching,
- 1:56still working, still leading. still smiling,
- 2:00still posting, still praying. From the outside,
- 2:04everything may appear intact. But somewhere beneath
- 2:07the surface, something is cracking. And that
- 2:11is what makes this conversation so important.
- 2:14Because collapse rarely begins on the day everybody
- 2:17sees it. Usually something has been cracking
- 2:20quietly for a long time. And perhaps one of God's
- 2:23greatest acts of mercy is allowing you to see
- 2:26the crack while there is still time to repair
- 2:28it. So today, our continuing conversation on
- 2:32refine for purpose is the crack before the collapse.
- 2:37What are the small compromises we keep ignoring?
- 2:40What attitudes have we started excusing? What
- 2:43boundaries have we slowly moved? What habits
- 2:47are growing where nobody can see them? What warning
- 2:50signs have we dismissed? What conviction from
- 2:53the Holy Spirit have we repeatedly silenced?
- 2:56Because maybe God is not exposing the crack to
- 2:59embarrass you. Maybe he is exposing it to save
- 3:03what the crack could eventually destroy. And
- 3:06listen carefully, the collapse is public. The
- 3:10crack is often private. When a building collapses,
- 3:14everybody sees the collapse. But engineers may
- 3:17later discover that the structural problem existed
- 3:20long before the building came down. Maybe there
- 3:23was corrosion. Maybe there was repeated stress.
- 3:28Maybe there was a fracture. Maybe something had
- 3:31been weakening beneath the surface. The collapse
- 3:34happened suddenly. The deterioration didn't.
- 3:38And sometimes human character works the same
- 3:40way. We see someone fall and say, how did this
- 3:45happen? But perhaps the better question is, when
- 3:49did the crack begin? Because the visible failure
- 3:53may have happened today. But the boundary started
- 3:56moving months ago. The affair became public today.
- 4:01But emotional boundaries may have been disappearing
- 4:03long before. The angry explosion happened today.
- 4:09But bitterness may have been accumulating for
- 4:11years. The financial scandal became public today.
- 4:17But entitlement may have been growing privately
- 4:19for a long time. The ministry collapsed today.
- 4:23But accountability may have disappeared years
- 4:26earlier. The marriage broke today, but communication
- 4:30may have been dying quietly for a long time.
- 4:33The person walked away from God today, but prayer
- 4:36had been disappearing, the word had been neglected,
- 4:39conviction had been resisted, and slowly the
- 4:42distance grew. The collapse gets the attention,
- 4:45but God was speaking at the crack. James explains
- 4:48something similar about temptation. James 1 .14
- 4:51-15 teaches that a person is tempted when drawn
- 4:54away by his own desire and enticed. Then desire
- 4:58conceives. Then sin is born. And when sin is
- 5:01fully grown, it produces death. Notice the progression.
- 5:05Desire, enticement, conception, sin, growth,
- 5:09death. There is a process. We often focus on
- 5:12the final stage. God is concerned about what
- 5:15is happening at the beginning. Because if you
- 5:17address the crack early enough, perhaps you never
- 5:20have to experience the collapse. And this is
- 5:22why we cannot despise conviction. Conviction
- 5:26is an early warning system. There are moments
- 5:30when the Holy Spirit makes you uncomfortable.
- 5:33You said something and afterward something inside
- 5:36you said that wasn't right. You entered a conversation
- 5:40and something told you, you shouldn't be here.
- 5:43You started becoming too close to someone. and
- 5:46something inside you said, this boundary is becoming
- 5:49dangerous. You made a financial decision and
- 5:52felt this isn't honest. You responded in anger
- 5:56and knew immediately that wasn't the person God
- 5:59is calling me to become. You started hiding something,
- 6:04deleting something, explaining something, justifying
- 6:07something. And deep inside, you knew sometimes
- 6:11that discomfort is not condemnation. Sometimes
- 6:14it is protection. The Holy Spirit is saying,
- 6:18look at the crack, not because God wants to humiliate
- 6:22you, because he knows where the crack can lead.
- 6:25One of the most dangerous things we can do is
- 6:28repeatedly silence what once convicted us, because
- 6:32there is a progression that should concern every
- 6:35believer. First, something bothers you, then
- 6:39you explain it, then you justify it, then you
- 6:42repeat it. then you normalize it, and eventually,
- 6:46you defend it. What once required an apology
- 6:49becomes part of your personality. What once brought
- 6:53conviction becomes something you now call, that's
- 6:57just who I am. Be careful, because refinement
- 7:01requires us to remain sensitive to correction.
- 7:04And sometimes the evidence of spiritual maturity
- 7:07is not that conviction disappears, it is that
- 7:11we respond to conviction faster. There is a small
- 7:14verse in Song of Solomon 2 .15 that says, catch
- 7:18for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin
- 7:22the vineyards. The little foxes, not the enormous
- 7:26animals, the little ones. Because sometimes what
- 7:30destroys something valuable begins small. A little
- 7:34compromise. A little dishonesty. A little flirtation.
- 7:38A little bitterness. A little pride. A little
- 7:42secret. A little resentment. A little habit.
- 7:46A little boundary moved. A little prayer life
- 7:49neglected. And because it looks small, we tolerate
- 7:52it. But small does not mean harmless. Little
- 7:56compromises can create large consequences. Look
- 8:01at Samson. People often remember Samson's collapse
- 8:05as the moment Delilah had his haircut. But Samson's
- 8:08problem did not begin with the haircut. Long
- 8:11before Delilah, Samson had been playing with
- 8:14boundaries. He repeatedly moved toward things
- 8:18that should have made him cautious. He became
- 8:20comfortable living close to compromise. And eventually,
- 8:24he began telling Delilah pieces of the truth.
- 8:27Closer, closer, closer. Until Judges 16 says
- 8:32that he told her everything. That is how boundaries
- 8:36often disappear. Not always through one enormous
- 8:39decision. Sometimes through inches, one conversation,
- 8:43one message, one meeting, one justification,
- 8:46one exception, one more time. And eventually,
- 8:50you look backward and realize, I am standing
- 8:53somewhere I once promised myself I would never
- 8:56go. That is the danger of moving boundaries slowly.
- 9:00If somebody asked you on the first day to cross
- 9:03the final line, you might say, absolutely not.
- 9:07But compromise rarely begins by asking for everything.
- 9:11It asks for something small, and then something
- 9:14smaller becomes normal. And once that becomes
- 9:17normal, it asks for something more. Until eventually,
- 9:21the abnormal becomes familiar. This is why scripture
- 9:25warns in 1 Corinthians 10 -12, Let him that thinketh,
- 9:29he standeth take heed, lest he fall. The danger
- 9:33is not strength. The danger is believing strength
- 9:36makes you immune. And this takes us back to when
- 9:40the strong get tired. Sometimes strong people
- 9:43become especially vulnerable because everyone
- 9:46depends on them. They are always carrying, always
- 9:49solving, always helping, always leading, always
- 9:53producing. And because everybody sees their strength,
- 9:57Nobody asks whether they are becoming depleted.
- 10:00Sometimes, they don't even ask themselves. And
- 10:03when exhaustion combines with isolation, disappointment,
- 10:07unresolved pain, temptation, and opportunity,
- 10:12the crack can grow quickly. This is why rest
- 10:14is spiritual. Accountability is spiritual. Boundaries
- 10:19are spiritual. Honest conversations are spiritual.
- 10:23Saying, I need help can be spiritual maturity.
- 10:26Because you don't have to wait until you collapse
- 10:29to admit that something is weakening. Strong
- 10:33people still need guardrails. Think about David.
- 10:37Second Samuel 11 begins with an interesting detail.
- 10:41It was the season when kings went out to war,
- 10:44but David remained in Jerusalem. One evening
- 10:47he got up from his bed and walked on the roof,
- 10:50and there he saw Bathsheba. Now David's entire
- 10:54collapse cannot be reduced to one detail, but
- 10:57scripture deliberately gives us the setting.
- 11:00David was not where we might have expected the
- 11:03king to be. Then he saw. Then he inquired. Then
- 11:07he sent. Then he took. Again, progression. Saw.
- 11:12Inquired. Sent. Took. There were multiple moments
- 11:17where the process could have stopped, and that
- 11:20is important. Because sometimes we talk about
- 11:23temptation as though there is only one moment
- 11:26of decision. Often there are many. God gives
- 11:29us exits, a moment to stop, a moment to reconsider,
- 11:33a moment to listen, a moment to call somebody,
- 11:36a moment to leave, a moment to confess, a moment
- 11:40to say, this is going too far. The question is
- 11:43whether we recognize the exit before the crack
- 11:46becomes a collapse. And then look at Peter. Before
- 11:49Peter denied Jesus, Jesus warned him. Luke 22
- 11:54records Jesus telling Peter that Satan desired
- 11:57to sift him like wheat. Peter responded confidently.
- 12:00He believed he was ready. He believed he was
- 12:03strong. He believed he could handle the pressure.
- 12:06But Jesus saw something Peter could not yet see.
- 12:09That is another form of mercy. The warning before
- 12:13the failure. Sometimes God sends a scripture.
- 12:17Sometimes a sermon. Sometimes a spouse, sometimes
- 12:21a friend, sometimes a mentor, sometimes a leader,
- 12:25sometimes a conversation, sometimes an uncomfortable
- 12:29feeling you cannot shake. And because we don't
- 12:32like the message, we become angry at the messenger.
- 12:36But what if the warning is mercy? What if God
- 12:39is trying to interrupt something before it grows?
- 12:42Proverbs tells us that wounds from a faithful
- 12:45friend can be trusted. Sometimes somebody who
- 12:48loves you enough to make you uncomfortable is
- 12:51more valuable than somebody who keeps you comfortable
- 12:54while you are drifting. And this is where pride
- 12:57becomes dangerous. Pride doesn't only say, I
- 13:00am better than everybody. Sometimes pride says,
- 13:04nobody can tell me anything. Nobody can correct
- 13:07me. Nobody understands me. Nobody knows what
- 13:11I've been through. I know what I'm doing. I can
- 13:14handle it. I can stop whenever I want. I'm not
- 13:17going that far. It won't happen to me. Those
- 13:20sentences should frighten us because confidence
- 13:22without accountability can become blindness.
- 13:26And maybe this is why God allows certain uncomfortable
- 13:29moments during the refining process. He is confronting
- 13:33us while there is still time. He is saying, look
- 13:37at this. Look at your anger. Look at your pride.
- 13:42Look at your relationship with money. Look at
- 13:45your private conversations Look at your boundaries
- 13:49Look at the way you speak to your spouse Look
- 13:53at the way you treat people beneath your authority
- 13:56Look at what you are watching Look at what you
- 14:00are hiding Look at what you keep deleting Look
- 14:05at the resentment you keep feeding Look at what
- 14:09you have stopped praying about because you already
- 14:11know what I would tell you not to shame you,
- 14:16to save you. Because maybe the greatest miracle
- 14:20is not always God rebuilding your life after
- 14:23collapse. Maybe sometimes the miracle is God
- 14:26showing you the crack early enough that collapse
- 14:29never has to happen. And this requires humility.
- 14:33Don't defend what God is trying to remove. This
- 14:36is difficult. Because when God touches something
- 14:39we have become attached to, we immediately begin
- 14:42explaining. Everybody does it. It's not that
- 14:46serious. You don't understand. I deserve this.
- 14:50I've been through a lot. I'm still a good person.
- 14:54And perhaps all of that may contain pieces of
- 14:57truth, but none of it answers the real question.
- 15:01What is the Holy Spirit saying? Because refinement
- 15:04is not about comparing yourself with everybody
- 15:07else. The refiner is looking at what does not
- 15:10belong in you. There may be something another
- 15:12person can handle. that you cannot. There may
- 15:15be a relationship that has become unhealthy for
- 15:18you. There may be an environment that awakens
- 15:21something dangerous in you. There may be access
- 15:24you need to restrict. There may be a conversation
- 15:27you need to stop. There may be a habit you need
- 15:30to confront. There may be an apology you need
- 15:33to make. There may be accountability you need
- 15:36to restore. And sometimes obedience looks very
- 15:39practical. Delete the number. Leave the conversation.
- 15:43Change the routine. Stop going there. Tell somebody
- 15:47the truth. Ask for help. Put the boundary back.
- 15:50Rest. Pray. Return to scripture. Return to community.
- 15:54Return to God. Don't wait for catastrophe to
- 15:58become serious about something God has already
- 16:00been whispering about, because the crack is easier
- 16:03to repair than the collapse. But there is something
- 16:06else I want us to understand. The crack does
- 16:10not mean the structure is worthless. If an engineer
- 16:13discovers a crack in a building, the purpose
- 16:16of inspection is not automatically to demolish
- 16:19the building. The first question is, can it be
- 16:22repaired? Can it be reinforced? Can the pressure
- 16:24be relieved? Can what has weakened be strengthened?
- 16:28And perhaps somebody needs to hear that spiritually.
- 16:31God showing you weakness does not mean God has
- 16:34abandoned you. God correcting your character
- 16:36does not mean he has canceled your purpose. God
- 16:39revealing something ugly inside you does not
- 16:43mean there is nothing beautiful he can still
- 16:45produce through you. Sometimes revelation is
- 16:49the beginning of restoration. David's sin was
- 16:53exposed. Peter's weakness was exposed. Moses'
- 16:57anger was exposed. Jacob's character was confronted,
- 17:02and God dealt with them, sometimes painfully,
- 17:06sometimes through consequences, sometimes through
- 17:09discipline. But exposure did not automatically
- 17:12mean abandonment. And this prepares us for something
- 17:16we need to understand in our next conversation.
- 17:20Because when God reveals the crack, what comes
- 17:23next may feel uncomfortable. Correction. Discipline.
- 17:29Consequences. Conviction. And sometimes we interpret
- 17:33all of those things as rejection. But scripture
- 17:37teaches something very different. Hebrews tells
- 17:41us that the Lord disciplines those he loves.
- 17:45So perhaps the correction you are resisting is
- 17:48not evidence that God has walked away. Perhaps
- 17:51it is evidence that God refuses to leave you
- 17:54the way you are. And that will bring us to our
- 17:56next continuing conversation. When God corrects
- 18:00the person he loves, correction is not rejection.
- 18:03But before we get there, I want you to sit with
- 18:06this question. What crack has God been showing
- 18:09me? Not your spouse's crack. Not your friend's
- 18:13crack. Not your pastor's crack. Not your co -worker's
- 18:17crack. Not the person you saw on social media.
- 18:21Yours. What have you been excusing? What boundary
- 18:25has moved? What conviction have you silenced?
- 18:29What warning have you dismissed? What habit has
- 18:33become stronger? What attitude have you started
- 18:36defending? What are you hiding? What have you
- 18:39stopped bringing before God? Maybe this conversation
- 18:43itself is part of God's mercy. Maybe God is allowing
- 18:47you to see something while there is still time
- 18:50to address it. Don't run from the light. Don't
- 18:53defend the crack. Don't cover what God wants
- 18:56to heal. Bring it to Him. Repent where repentance
- 19:00is necessary. Repair what can be repaired. Restore
- 19:04the boundary. receive accountability, ask for
- 19:08help, return to prayer, return to the word, return
- 19:12to obedience. Because collapse does not have
- 19:16to become your testimony. Maybe your testimony
- 19:19can be, God showed me the crack and I listen.
- 19:24Maybe years from now, you will look backward
- 19:26and realize that the uncomfortable conviction
- 19:29you felt in this season was actually God's protection
- 19:32over your marriage. Protection over your family.
- 19:37Protection over your ministry. Protection over
- 19:40your career. Protection over your calling. Protection
- 19:44over your future. Protection over your life.
- 19:47Because sometimes God's mercy does not look like
- 19:51ignoring the crack. Sometimes God's mercy looks
- 19:54like revealing it. You are being refined. Not
- 19:58humiliated. Not discarded. Not abandoned. Refined.
- 20:02And perhaps God is showing you what must be repaired
- 20:06because He knows what He is preparing you to
- 20:09carry. Don't waste the warning. Don't silence
- 20:12the conviction. Don't ignore the crack. Let God
- 20:15refine it now before the crack becomes the collapse.
- 20:19You are being refined for a purpose.
