- 0:00Hello?
- 0:00Hello.
- 0:00And today I'm here to share a story with you.
- 0:04It's my origin story where I got has started from.
- 0:08On my online business journey.
- 0:12Today I will discuss what happened.
- 0:14As the fitness and wellness director at OCuSOFT, and I will also be discussing my online business journey of coaches, the coaches that are out there to help you.
- 0:26And the coaches that are out there to, um, In an unregulated market to hurt you.
- 0:34You're listening to the stop, the mind screw podcast.
- 0:37I'm your host, Kathie Owen.
- 0:39I have been a certified fitness trainer certified life coach since 2002, teaching others.
- 0:45The stop, the mind screw process.
- 0:47On this channel, we talk about fitness, having a growth mindset, healthy habits and more today we're talking my origin story and how I got to where I am today.
- 1:00I'll never forget the day.
- 1:01It was March of 2020.
- 1:03I had just gotten back into the ozone, the gym in which I run at OCuSOFT mind you.
- 1:11We had flooded three times in this building in the 10 years that I had been there.
- 1:16And we had recently undergone construction.
- 1:20I had worked in operations department probably more than I worked in the gym as the fitness and wellness director at OCuSOFT and.
- 1:30March of 2020.
- 1:32I just got back into the gym.
- 1:35We lifted it up off of the ground three feet.
- 1:38That's something they do in Houston now since the hurricane Harvey flood, but this building had flooded and they lifted the building up off the ground.
- 1:46Well, the building got compromised.
- 1:48I was out of the building for an entire year because of this.
- 1:54They had made me a makeshift gym and a small room inside the building.
- 1:58And also I had been training people in the stairwell and other little improvising treatments that I could do.
- 2:07And I also started an online business at the same time, so that I would have something to give people who didn't come to work out with me some material or something that they could share along the way.
- 2:19So here we are March of 2020.
- 2:22I just got back in the gym.
- 2:24I swear, just one week.
- 2:26And there was a company wide meeting called.
- 2:29And I had heard through the grapevine that there was a pandemic going on.
- 2:32So we were probably going to be closing the gym.
- 2:38But I thought to myself, there's no way they're going to close the gym.
- 2:42Yeah.
- 2:43Be careful what you think.
- 2:46Because sure enough, they closed the gym for the pandemic.
- 2:52And.
- 2:53As a fitness trainer during the pandemic, most of my friends and colleagues.
- 2:59We're with out a doubt, like lost.
- 3:04Everything's shifted to online.
- 3:06And I was trying to do that as well.
- 3:09I worked from home as much as I could and you know, that slowly they needed me in the building.
- 3:15So at first I did temperature screenings.
- 3:18And I liked that, but it still wasn't my.
- 3:22Forte.
- 3:24And I saw other people in my department, we were cleaning everything.
- 3:28Pens pencils.
- 3:30Tables anything a person touched.
- 3:34We were cleaning.
- 3:35Including walls.
- 3:38Yes, we were even doing walls.
- 3:42It was crazy, I had this attitude of.
- 3:47You know, if you want me to cut grass with scissors.
- 3:50Where this scissors.
- 3:51Because I love my job.
- 3:54I am a team player and I love my team that I work with.
- 3:58So something magical happened, even though I was pushed into working.
- 4:06In places that I was not totally familiar with or capable of either.
- 4:13So they had, like I said, they were cleaning everything.
- 4:16And one of my favorite things to do in cardiovascular exercise is the StairMaster and the gyms were all closed and I was gradually gaining weight and my fitness was losing its luster to say the least.
- 4:32So I volunteered to clean the stairs because we have four staircases in our building on campus.
- 4:39And I said, I will clean the stairs.
- 4:41That will be my workout.
- 4:42And what I would do is I'd put my earbuds on, I'd listen to podcasts and I cleaned the stairs and I'd get my workout.
- 4:50So that was very, very beneficial for so many reasons.
- 4:54Now I was listening to podcasts.
- 4:58On my earbuds.
- 4:59During this time, I was listening to business by designed by James Wedmore.
- 5:04This coach here, to work with him.
- 5:07One-on-one costs.
- 5:10$20,000 at least.
- 5:12I may be more and to sign up for his business by design program costs.
- 5:20Quite a bit of money as well.
- 5:22I mean, he's very good at what he teaches.
- 5:25But I was drinking what I call the Kool-Aid of the online coaching world from James Wedmore.
- 5:33I found Jess O'Connell.
- 5:35She's a great coach.
- 5:37As far as I know.
- 5:38But I was drinking that.
- 5:40Kool-Aid just keep that in mind.
- 5:42Not only that.
- 5:44I signed up for kids.
- 5:47Kajabi is a platform that will include your courses, include your email provider, include your.
- 5:55Blog.
- 5:56It does.
- 5:57Uh, everything.
- 5:59Does it do everything well.
- 6:01Uh, no.
- 6:03So I signed up for Kajabi.
- 6:06Is$200 a month.
- 6:08My.
- 6:09Stupid thought process was, man, my clients are just gonna love me.
- 6:14I have this great platform.
- 6:16They're just going to love the ease of the taking my courses and all of this great stuff.
- 6:21Yeah.
- 6:22I said it was stupid.
- 6:24Keep that in mind.
- 6:25Cause I'm ashamed to admit that it took me over 18 months with this platform.
- 6:31That's about$3,000.
- 6:33If you're doing the math and by the way, my math skills are horrible.
- 6:37So I already added this up beforehand.
- 6:40But I had spent$3,000 and made zero.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:48Now could I have done something different?
- 6:50Absolutely.
- 6:51I probably could have made money off of it, but everything in my mind, if you watch my video from us week happens for a reason.
- 6:59And I'm glad I stayed small because there were just mistakes that were made along the way that made a difference.
- 7:06So I was drinking that.
- 7:09Kool-Aid of the online coaching business world.
- 7:14I listened to James Wedmore.
- 7:16I listened to Jenna Kutcher.
- 7:17I listened to Jasmine star.
- 7:19When all of a sudden I'm introduced to the warm buttery cookie of Amy Porterfield.
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:28She sounds like.
- 7:30Just so kind and sweet and delightful and intelligent.
- 7:36And.
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:38Let's talk about that.
- 7:39Kool-Aid.
- 7:40In my mind.
- 7:41I thought, man, Amy gets me.
- 7:44I'm a small business.
- 7:46I'm struggling.
- 7:47I'm a small, small little entity down here and I listened to her podcasts and she's got these great guests on there that have really made success on Kajabi.
- 7:58And.
- 7:59Oh, all that good stuff.
- 8:02In the meantime.
- 8:04I'm also listening to Joseph Rodriguez.
- 8:09And Joseph Rodriguez had a package of courses and he still has them today, only$147 for all of these courses.
- 8:18And I purchased those.
- 8:20I still have them to this day.
- 8:21I have lifetime access, of course, and they keep getting better.
- 8:25$147.
- 8:26Keep that in mind.
- 8:28I still listen to Joseph today and he is in fact, my mentor, I highly recommend him.
- 8:34But along comes February of 2021.
- 8:39And I still had yet to sell a single thing on Kajabi.
- 8:43I'm paying for Kajabi.
- 8:45Through my, my job that I work at.
- 8:49Which is fine.
- 8:50I consider it a business expense and I was using it to help others at my job.
- 8:55But I didn't really have a constructive course laid out.
- 8:59It didn't have a real good business plan.
- 9:03And I wasn't listening to who I should have been.
- 9:05Joseph Rodriguez.
- 9:07Instead, I was listening to Amy Porterfield and she was launching her course.
- 9:12It was going to start in March.
- 9:15And I was like, holy cow.
- 9:17Well, I couldn't attend her 45 minute webinar because I had a life to live and I didn't have time to sit down at a computer.
- 9:25So she conveniently had it on her podcast and I could listen to that.
- 9:30So I listened to her podcast.
- 9:32Episode launching her course, which was only going to be out for a few days.
- 9:36Mind you.
- 9:37Um, that's FOMO in case you don't know.
- 9:41And I listened to that.
- 9:43But the course costs$2,000.
- 9:46I was like, oh my gosh, I'm not going to pay for that.
- 9:49And of course her team conveniently sees through the funnel that I'm sent through that I did not purchase.
- 9:56So what happens.
- 9:59They offer me.
- 10:01Up to 1 97 a month package to buy her course.
- 10:07Okay.
- 10:08I thought, wow, I'll sign up for this because I'll be making at least$2,000 a month.
- 10:14They'll have this paid off in no time.
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:17So sign up for her course.
- 10:19And here's what happens.
- 10:20I quickly found out we had what was called an accountability pod.
- 10:24You could sign up for somebody that was in your area, or you could find somebody who had same in common interests that you had.
- 10:31And I found my person.
- 10:34She lived in my community.
- 10:36She was doing the same thing.
- 10:38I was wow.
- 10:39Was I excited?
- 10:40So me and her met up and then we got several others that wanted to join us too on this accountability pod.
- 10:47And I think we had five people in our group and we had meetings every Wednesday at one o'clock and we had what I thought was going to be people who could share my content, look at my content, show me where I was messing up and maybe show me, give me some guidance on what to do through Amy's course.
- 11:04Cause it was kind of overwhelming.
- 11:06No I take that back.
- 11:07It wasn't just kind of, it was very overwhelming.
- 11:10I quickly came to find out that what was in her courses were what I call online.
- 11:17Coaching junkies.
- 11:19Yeah.
- 11:20These people have money to just throw away on a course and never take it all.
- 11:26Or if they do take it all, they could go go, well, I I'll just sign up for whatever she's got coming up next and that'll help me.
- 11:33So that's forward to today.
- 11:35Years later, I look back and I see they had money to waste on courses like that.
- 11:41And they end up never using the material that was taught.
- 11:46Yeah.
- 11:47Funny.
- 11:48Neither do I.
- 11:49Why?.
- 11:50Well, first of all, it's an outdated process.
- 11:53And second of all, and probably the most important is it's not in alignment.
- 11:59And authentic to how I run my life and my business.
- 12:04What do I mean by this?
- 12:06I didn't do that.
- 12:08I won't coach like that.
- 12:10I coach from my heart, I coach from kindness.
- 12:13I coached from respect to me.
- 12:15That's not respect.
- 12:17It's not kind.
- 12:19So the other day, I go to her Instagram profile.
- 12:23I don't follow her.
- 12:24I don't listen to her podcasts because they just rub.
- 12:28It sounds like chalk, you know, the fingernails scratching on the chalkboard.
- 12:33And it just because I see right through it.
- 12:37And it hurts me to see so many people getting hurt by this.
- 12:42So she said something on her story, on her story, about breaking up with somebody and going through business and still having to do all your business.
- 12:50And you have a breakup.
- 12:52Uh, she lost her business partner or something and, and.
- 12:57I know what really happened.
- 12:59But I put it on my story and I put fake coming out of her mouth and she saw it.
- 13:06And she told the person who was her right-hand person that she broke up with.
- 13:12To, to go to go email me.
- 13:14And I didn't even see it for a few days because I don't look at that stuff.
- 13:18I don't have time for that.
- 13:20But she told the girl told me, take your embarrassing Lee story down.
- 13:24And it was Chloe.
- 13:25That was her right-hand person.
- 13:27When I was in DCA.
- 13:29That was her right-hand person.
- 13:32Probably Chloe did something more successful than being her assistant.
- 13:37And that's all that happened that I get that, but it's still fake, still fake telling me to take an embossed embarrassingly story down.
- 13:46Really.
- 13:47I I'm not embarrassed.
- 13:49Are you because that's projection on your part.
- 13:52And I'm very, very familiar.
- 13:55I dealing with narcissist narcissists are greedy.
- 14:00They are projecting.
- 14:01They distort evidence.
- 14:04They are also.
- 14:08King of projection.
- 14:10And so.
- 14:12Those are the things we're dealing with.
- 14:15And why are you embarrassed when I only have like 500 followers that really don't care about you or any of that?
- 14:24But I do care about my community.
- 14:27I care about my people and I care about the people that come to my site to find true and kind information.
- 14:34Now let's say Amy changed and she, all of a sudden could understand that 45 minute webinars are not good.
- 14:41A pod funnel is the way to go and do and market in a pod funnel and be kind and also call out people.
- 14:49Like myself who are not a fit for you.
- 14:53Because I am not a fit for you.
- 14:55And that is the way really you should do business.
- 15:00And you should coach people that you genuinely care about instead of sounding like a cookie cutter and using your voice to go here, give me your money.
- 15:10I'll be nice.
- 15:12Yeah.
- 15:12She won't be nice.
- 15:16So I wrote this blog post that goes with this origin story.
- 15:20To share my experience.
- 15:22To show how I connected the dots, looking backwards as Steve jobs says in his commencement speech that happens in life.
- 15:30The funny thing is I came across a synchronicity and a love synchronicities synchronicities happen all the time when you're not in victim mentality or you're not victimizing somebody.
- 15:41So the synchronicity I came across was a video from a girl named Jess, and I thought it was Jess O'Connell.
- 15:48I'm like, wow, this girl is calling out James Wedmore.
- 15:51Oh, okay.
- 15:52Let me watch this.
- 15:54So it turned out not to be Jess O'Connell.
- 15:56But that's neither here nor there, but what happened was I watched this video and this girl called out all of them.
- 16:04I mean blatantly called them out in the video's kind of cheesy, but I will share it in the description below and in the show notes.
- 16:12And it's also on the blog post that goes with this.
- 16:14But it was so funny because it is a synchronicity.
- 16:16This girl is calling them all out and then really saying exactly what I was thinking and feeling.
- 16:22And I'm like, well, okay, good.
- 16:23There's somebody else out there that feels this.
- 16:25So fast forward to today, I now offer all of my content online, a hundred percent of it to the employees at OCuSOFT which is the place that I worked full time.
- 16:39I am the fitness and wellness director there.
- 16:43Not only that it gives me time to build and.
- 16:47And also work on my business at the same time, because they're combined, they are the same thing.
- 16:54And I love my job.
- 16:55I would cut grass with scissors if they ask me to, because I love what the company stands for.
- 17:02That is a pendulum.
- 17:04I am.
- 17:05100% committed to, and a pendulum is just a thought structure that everybody else thinks it's in Reality Transurfing I talk about it all the time, but yes.
- 17:15Decide what pendulums you're going to give your energy to.
- 17:18And that way you can control which pendulums get you hooked.
- 17:21I love those whom I help.
- 17:23I'm also kind of find myself to be an advocate of victims and advocate for those who want something.
- 17:32Who want better?
- 17:34And.
- 17:35Maybe don't quite know where to find it.
- 17:38I feel like that comes from my fitness background because when I'm in the gym, I get so frustrated with people who act like they own the gym or not paying attention to others around them.
- 17:49Why.
- 17:50'cause I feel like.
- 17:51If you're not, you're not paying attention.
- 17:53You're standing in front of the dumbbells doing your workout.
- 17:56Somebody who needs the dumbbell needs to get in there and pick it up.
- 18:00But you're standing in their way and you're not paying attention to anybody else in the gym.
- 18:05And this happens so often.
- 18:08But the big picture is this happens so much that the people who really need the gym who really need to be there are not going to be there.
- 18:16They're not going to be using the dumbbells because you're standing in way.
- 18:20And that irritates me to no end.
- 18:23And I feel like I'm an advocate for that kind of person.
- 18:26Because I know that person needs to be there.
- 18:29I know they need to feel comfortable and they need to not be intimidated by somebody who's in there being a bullying.
- 18:36Who.
- 18:37A bully.
- 18:38Bottom line.
- 18:39I would rather be right.
- 18:42Then kind.
- 18:43And that is not how I operate my business.
- 18:46I operate my business, my life, my.
- 18:50Everything.
- 18:52From a place of kindness.
- 18:54And that's all that matters.
- 18:57Do I call out the bullies?
- 18:59Absolutely.
- 19:00Because I see right through them.
- 19:02I see what they're doing.
- 19:03I see them blocking the dumbbells.
- 19:06And that is a metaphor for everything.
- 19:09Stop blocking the dumbbells.
- 19:11And by the way, I'm an advocate for your confidence to go pick them up.
- 19:19All right.
- 19:19That's my video for today.
- 19:20If you know somebody who can benefit from it.
- 19:23Please share with them.
- 19:25And until next time, I'll see you next time.
- 19:28Peace out and Namaste.
