Speaker 1: Donald Countison. One two, No, Donald down, donalds go down.
• 0:05
  Speaker 1: That's not what I meant.
• 0:06
Speaker 2: Three two, Well, then that's you gotta say. You said
• 0:10
Speaker 2: count us in. I thought you were like Donald, count
• 0:12
Speaker 2: us down. There we go because counting us in is
• 0:15
Speaker 2: you know, like the song.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: Is like seven eight right exactly, your song count us
• 0:19
  Speaker 1: into our song?
• 0:20
Speaker 2: Donald, I really don't want to anymore.
• 0:22
Speaker 1: Five six, seven eight. You want fame, well, fame costs,
• 0:26
Speaker 1: and right here is where you start paying in sweat,
• 0:29
Speaker 1: Debbie Allen Fame the TV show Thank You.
• 0:32
Speaker 3: Here's some stories that show we made about a bunch
• 0:38
Speaker 3: of docs and nurses, and I said, here's the story
• 0:43
Speaker 3: nets so here yead.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: All right, listen, we have Donald one of our first
• 0:59
Speaker 1: We have our first real guest.
• 1:01
Speaker 2: Yes we do. And I'm really excited about this.
• 1:03
Speaker 1: I don't think there could be a more appropriate guest.
• 1:05
Speaker 1: Because he's the reason that we're here. He's the reason
• 1:08
Speaker 1: we're friends. He's the reason that this show happened, that
• 1:11
Speaker 1: so many people across the world love, and it all
• 1:13
Speaker 1: came from his brain.
• 1:15
Speaker 2: He's the reason why I'm in my why I have
• 1:17
Speaker 2: a closet that I can stay in right now.
• 1:19
  Speaker 1: He's the reason I have a desk. He's the reason
• 1:21
  Speaker 1: I have a desk. He's the reason I have this
• 1:23
Speaker 1: water bottle. I always say that to our next guest
• 1:26
Speaker 1: jokingly but also seriously whenever I buy myself, even like
• 1:30
Speaker 1: occasionally I buy him dinner and he's so grateful, and
• 1:32
Speaker 1: I say, are you kidding? I can only buy you
• 1:34
Speaker 1: this dinner because of you, ladies and gentlemen. The creator
• 1:37
Speaker 1: of Scrubs, mister Bill Lawrence.
• 1:39
Speaker 4: Yeah, I pretended to not even be in the frame,
• 1:44
Speaker 4: even though this is not a video thing.
• 1:45
Speaker 2: Hey, guys, I know I wish we were recording so
• 1:47
Speaker 2: people could see that.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: I want people. I want people at home to know
• 1:50
Speaker 1: that even though we're not recording the video, Bill hid
• 1:52
Speaker 1: on on the Zoom app and made an appearance.
• 1:58
Speaker 4: Hey, that was too nice and of an introduction, because
• 2:02
Speaker 4: you guys would have both done fine without me. I
• 2:04
Speaker 4: like that. I can claim credit for your success and
• 2:06
Speaker 4: well being, but you would have found your way regardless.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: Well that's nice of you to say, but you definitely
• 2:12
Speaker 1: changed both of our lives a lot and a big way,
• 2:16
Speaker 1: and also made something that very rarely happens. I'm finding
• 2:20
Speaker 1: as I attempt to make TV shows and produce them,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: and something that went nine years, and something that is
• 2:28
Speaker 1: a global success. And I guess the first logical question
• 2:32
Speaker 1: I wrote down in my notes is how did Because
• 2:34
Speaker 1: I was listening to this, I want to know how
• 2:36
Speaker 1: you came up with the idea? How did it? How
• 2:38
Speaker 1: did the seed come to you in the first place?
• 2:41
Speaker 4: You guys both know there was a medical advisor on
• 2:43
Speaker 4: the show named j D, and he's the real JD,
• 2:47
Speaker 4: and he's my best friend in college.
• 2:50
Speaker 5: He was a fuck up and a curse on.
• 2:52
Speaker 1: You, curse away, Bill, go nuts, let loose.
• 2:57
  Speaker 4: He was.
• 2:57
Speaker 5: He was a screw up. I went the other way, and.
• 3:02
Speaker 4: I used to joke with him because he was such
• 3:04
Speaker 4: a bad student that he went back to college to
• 3:06
Speaker 4: go to med school a second time.
• 3:08
Speaker 5: I mean to pre med a second time, so we'll
• 3:09
Speaker 5: get in to med school.
• 3:10
Speaker 4: I said, my biggest nightmare would be waking up in
• 3:12
Speaker 4: an emergency room and having you standing over me and going, hey, you're.
• 3:15
  Speaker 5: Gonna be fine.
• 3:17
Speaker 4: And I just thought that would be a good TV
• 3:19
Speaker 4: show because we used to drink beers and used to
• 3:21
Speaker 4: talk about how all these stories, especially the early ones,
• 3:24
Speaker 4: are ones straight from his life, you know, worrying that
• 3:26
Speaker 4: his friend sowed a piece of gauze up into somebody
• 3:29
Speaker 4: falling in love with a different girl in his residency program.
• 3:31
Speaker 5: And he's now married to He's.
• 3:33
Speaker 4: A real guy. It's more relevant than ever because he
• 3:36
Speaker 4: has become the Kelso at a Kaiser hospital Wells Peelis,
• 3:40
Speaker 4: and he's there running their COVID virus command center today
• 3:43
  Speaker 4: as we speak.
• 3:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw that you tweeted something about that, So
• 3:46
Speaker 1: tell us, like, because you're in you must be. You're
• 3:48
Speaker 1: still best friends, so you must be in contact with
• 3:50
Speaker 1: him as he's dealing with all this COVID insanity.
• 3:53
Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, he's superpals. He he's a heart surgeon and
• 3:56
  Speaker 4: a cardiologist.
• 3:57
Speaker 5: He he still just speaking and.
• 3:59
Speaker 4: Gay sometimes the real JD. But he goes by John
• 4:02
Speaker 4: so you know, he put out a tweet the other
• 4:04
Speaker 4: day saying, hey to all the doctors and nurses you
• 4:08
Speaker 4: know that work with me.
• 4:09
Speaker 5: I'm really proud, and I said, hey, is the real JD.
• 4:12
Speaker 4: He married the real Elliott and he's out there fighting
• 4:15
Speaker 4: the fight and it became viral on a news story
• 4:17
Speaker 4: and stuff in our basketball game that Donald has played
• 4:20
Speaker 4: in before, and in this episode you can see that
• 4:22
Speaker 4: Donald can play ball. JD played in that game, and
• 4:25
Speaker 4: he tore his rotator cuff, so he can't be a
• 4:27
Speaker 4: heart surgeon as much because it, you know, aggravates his injury.
• 4:30
Speaker 4: So he took the Kelso job the same way. Doctor
• 4:33
Speaker 4: Cox took the Kelso job late in life, and he
• 4:34
Speaker 4: runs the whole hospital on in those fields.
• 4:36
Speaker 2: That said game you speak of is probably the roughest
• 4:40
Speaker 2: game I've ever played in in my life. Jaws being broke,
• 4:44
Speaker 2: noses broke, It's quested.
• 4:47
Speaker 5: It's a bunch of dumb comedy writers too.
• 4:49
Speaker 2: Man, Oh my gosh, it's violent. It's so violent. It's violent, dude,
• 4:53
  Speaker 2: it's violent.
• 4:54
  Speaker 4: It's a lot older now, Donald, we're all, I mean,
• 4:56
Speaker 4: we're the old guys.
• 4:57
Speaker 5: Now, there's a wave of young guy.
• 4:59
Speaker 4: My son plays Will and I sent Zach a video
• 5:02
Speaker 4: of Will dunking the other day and I was so
• 5:04
  Speaker 4: excited about it.
• 5:04
Speaker 1: Yeah, Bill, send me a video Will dunky. He's like,
• 5:06
Speaker 1: you have no idea how proud this makes me?
• 5:12
Speaker 4: Donald Donald, Zach doesn't understand, as you know, like to
• 5:16
Speaker 4: see somebody dunk. I didn't even get a response. So
• 5:18
Speaker 4: Zach's like, oh, yeah, he's thrown that round ball into
• 5:20
  Speaker 4: the hoop without.
• 5:22
Speaker 1: If you if you had sent me that kid singing
• 5:24
Speaker 1: bring him Home from lim Is, I would have cried.
• 5:26
Speaker 2: You would have lost your mind.
• 5:27
Speaker 1: You would have lost your mind.
• 5:28
Speaker 2: Oh, by the way, Zach, I am so proud of Will.
• 5:33
  Speaker 2: Oh my god.
• 5:34
Speaker 1: I would have had it on repeat. I literally would
• 5:36
Speaker 1: have just been playing Will singing bring him Home.
• 5:38
Speaker 2: Bill. When you were younger, could you dunk? Did you not?
• 5:42
Speaker 2: You cannot dunk? When I was younger, I could. But
• 5:45
Speaker 2: when I was a lot younger, yeah, a lot.
• 5:49
Speaker 4: Donald Will does it?
• 5:50
Speaker 5: Will does it now aggressively.
• 5:51
  Speaker 4: It's pretty cool.
• 5:52
Speaker 2: That's awesome. Like on the Spin move on to Break.
• 5:55
Speaker 4: You can do it off the dribble, and he can
• 5:57
Speaker 4: do it off an hour you he's has troubles, still gripping.
• 6:00
Speaker 1: Why are you guys speaking Latin right now? I have
• 6:02
  Speaker 1: no idea.
• 6:04
Speaker 2: He tries, he tries.
• 6:06
Speaker 1: I wanted to go back to JD for the real
• 6:08
Speaker 1: JD for a second, because I remember back in when
• 6:10
Speaker 1: we first started, he had a pager and and they
• 6:14
Speaker 1: would literally he'd be at the hospital advising us. So,
• 6:16
Speaker 1: just for those of you who don't know, a medical
• 6:18
Speaker 1: advisor on the show is obviously showing us everyone the
• 6:21
Speaker 1: extra is Donald and I all the doctors how to
• 6:24
Speaker 1: look like we know what we're doing and this is
• 6:26
Speaker 1: how you do this, and this is what you'd be
• 6:27
Speaker 1: doing in this particular situation. And this was still in
• 6:30
Speaker 1: the era of the fax machine. And I remember JD
• 6:32
Speaker 1: would he'd be talking to us and saying, yeah, hold
• 6:35
Speaker 1: it like that, do that, and then he'd get a page.
• 6:37
Speaker 1: And then he'd go receive a fax and he'd look
• 6:39
Speaker 1: down at the facts of someone's EKG and he'd be like, uh,
• 6:42
Speaker 1: I should probably get goo and.
• 6:48
Speaker 4: Yeah. You know, he used to joke about that that
• 6:49
Speaker 4: he liked the gig with us so much more than
• 6:52
Speaker 4: his real gig, you know, because he was a grunt.
• 6:54
Speaker 4: You know, he was still I mean it was out
• 6:56
Speaker 4: of residency, but you know he was a slaven a
• 6:59
Speaker 4: way back then to pay off med school loans and
• 7:01
Speaker 4: kind of being around Hollywood. He loved it. You know.
• 7:03
Speaker 2: His wife would also uh cover for him when he
• 7:06
Speaker 2: was when he couldn't be there, she'd come by and
• 7:10
Speaker 2: you know, we'd run things by her. Speaking of this episode,
• 7:13
Speaker 2: it starts off in the O R and I remember thinking, Oh,
• 7:17
Speaker 2: this is gonna be awesome. I get to show my
• 7:19
Speaker 2: dramatic face in the middle of surgery. It'll be just
• 7:24
Speaker 2: like all the doctor shows that are on right now,
• 7:27
Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And then we get there
• 7:29
Speaker 2: and you're like, no, put the mask on. What we
• 7:33
Speaker 2: put the mask on? You're like, no, you guys, we
• 7:34
Speaker 2: we have to wear the masks. And I was like, wait,
• 7:36
Speaker 2: but we're supposed to be acting. This is nearly and
• 7:39
Speaker 2: you were like no, no, no, no, no no, put
• 7:40
  Speaker 2: the masks on.
• 7:41
Speaker 4: Put the mask with your eyes and do it with
• 7:43
  Speaker 4: your eyes.
• 7:44
Speaker 2: And I remember being, okay, this could this is gonna be.
• 7:47
Speaker 2: This is okay looking back at it now, we were
• 7:51
Speaker 2: other than mash. I think the first show is really
• 7:54
Speaker 2: to do that. All of these other shows were doing
• 7:56
Speaker 2: surgery without the masks on.
• 7:58
Speaker 4: And Donald it's a great point because you know, JD
• 8:00
Speaker 4: is most proud of even though we took so many
• 8:02
Speaker 4: liberties and ragofy and stuff. It's been often said that
• 8:06
Speaker 4: this for at least medical professionals, that this was the
• 8:08
Speaker 4: most realistic medical show, you know, just on what it
• 8:11
  Speaker 4: was like.
• 8:12
Speaker 1: I get that all the time. Bill and people on
• 8:14
Speaker 1: my social media and everything will say and even I
• 8:16
Speaker 1: think the American Medical Association said that so so tell
• 8:20
Speaker 1: us about that when you when you started, did you
• 8:23
Speaker 1: I've always said and correct me if I'm wrong, that
• 8:25
Speaker 1: you because the show is going to be silly and
• 8:27
Speaker 1: go off in crazy tangents. That you said to your
• 8:30
Speaker 1: writers and obviously a mantra to yourself that no, I
• 8:33
Speaker 1: want the medicine to always be as accurate as possible.
• 8:38
Speaker 4: We had to they, you know, they initially even before
• 8:40
Speaker 4: I get cast, you guys talked to about making that
• 8:42
Speaker 4: show on a sound stage, and I'm like, man, this
• 8:44
Speaker 4: show's gonna be so silly in so many ways. If
• 8:46
Speaker 4: it's not in a real hospital, people are going to
• 8:48
Speaker 4: tell it's fake. And so we used to have this
• 8:51
Speaker 4: board of you know, we do all the funny fantasies
• 8:55
Speaker 4: and jokes and silly shit, and then we had this
• 8:58
Speaker 4: board of ways to make it real, you know, and
• 9:02
  Speaker 4: one of them.
• 9:02
Speaker 5: Donald was talking about. One of them the masks.
• 9:04
Speaker 4: But you guys need to look competent, people needing to die,
• 9:08
Speaker 4: the rooms to be grungy, and to not have as
• 9:11
Speaker 4: saturated a look color wise. You know, we just wanted
• 9:15
Speaker 4: we thought, like we made everything that wasn't funny real,
• 9:18
Speaker 4: that maybe it would work.
• 9:20
Speaker 5: Going back and forth between serious and goofy tone.
• 9:22
Speaker 4: You know, I heard Donald talking about that in your
• 9:24
Speaker 4: other episode, about how the colors didn't pop and everything
• 9:27
Speaker 4: looked kind of dank and you know, and disgusting.
• 9:30
  Speaker 5: Intentionally.
• 9:31
Speaker 1: When you came up, you were coming off of Spin
• 9:33
Speaker 1: City for those of you who don't know.
• 9:35
Speaker 2: But I was going to ask should we go through?
• 9:37
Speaker 2: I mean, not that you want to sit here and
• 9:38
Speaker 2: discuss your resume or anything like that.
• 9:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, he would, he'd love to.
• 9:43
Speaker 2: We gave a little story about what we were doing
• 9:45
Speaker 2: before Scrubs and how our life changed before Scrubs. I
• 9:48
Speaker 2: imagine your life changed. I remember the table read. I'm
• 9:52
Speaker 2: just saying I would love to hear.
• 9:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, we never heard like how I mean, you were
• 9:56
Speaker 1: already successfully you're coming off Spin City, but how you know,
• 9:59
Speaker 1: Donald and I went on and on about how it
• 10:00
Speaker 1: was such a shock to our lives. I mean, this
• 10:03
Speaker 1: was your first hit show on your own. I mean,
• 10:05
Speaker 1: was that a big change in your life?
• 10:07
Speaker 4: Yeah? You know what I had had such a weird
• 10:10
Speaker 4: experience on Spin City that I was partnered up with
• 10:12
Speaker 4: an iconic star from my generation. You know, you guys
• 10:16
Speaker 4: were so kind of Mike Fox when he came and
• 10:18
Speaker 4: guested on the show. But that was such a surreal
• 10:21
Speaker 4: experience for me writing for Mike. You know, it's like
• 10:25
Speaker 4: the back to the guy that I grew up with,
• 10:27
Speaker 4: this particular experience. Even before I met you guys, I
• 10:31
Speaker 4: was like, all right, you can't have any expectations. There's
• 10:34
Speaker 4: no huge movie star doing this.
• 10:36
Speaker 5: You guys have probably heard me say before.
• 10:38
Speaker 4: I decided to treat this whole thing like, all right,
• 10:40
Speaker 4: I wrote the script. No one's ever gonna make it.
• 10:43
Speaker 4: They're gonna let me shoot the pilot.
• 10:44
Speaker 5: It'll never be on. The show's going to be on.
• 10:48
Speaker 4: It'll never last a whole season, So I'll make the
• 10:50
Speaker 4: janitor an imaginary character, you.
• 10:52
Speaker 5: Know what I mean.
• 10:53
Speaker 4: Oh, it lasted the whole season. It'll never be on
• 10:55
Speaker 4: a season two. And so to me, that kind of
• 10:59
Speaker 4: protected me. You know. I thought that I was making
• 11:03
Speaker 4: something like Freaks and Geeks, you know, that would be
• 11:07
Speaker 4: people go hey, that was really good. And it got
• 11:09
Speaker 4: canceled after four episodes, and it was surreal to me
• 11:11
Speaker 4: that it kept working.
• 11:13
Speaker 5: That makes sense to you, guys. So I was really
• 11:15
Speaker 5: into the art of it all.
• 11:16
Speaker 4: Like at a table read, I remember just being so
• 11:19
Speaker 4: happy that everyone top to bottom was so good, you know,
• 11:23
Speaker 4: and from what I had done, not necessarily popping you know,
• 11:28
Speaker 4: jokes in a sitcom style and playing it real.
• 11:31
Speaker 5: And I'm like, oh, this is a show that I'd
• 11:33
Speaker 5: watch even though no one else will.
• 11:35
Speaker 4: So yeah, I was resigned very early to the show
• 11:37
  Speaker 4: not being successful.
• 11:38
Speaker 5: It was very weird.
• 11:39
Speaker 1: I never asked you this question, but be coming off
• 11:41
Speaker 1: of Spin City and this was kind of the beginning
• 11:43
Speaker 1: of a big single camera comedy craze for those of
• 11:46
Speaker 1: you who don't know the difference being a sitcom traditionally
• 11:49
Speaker 1: a set in front of a live audience and then
• 11:51
Speaker 1: a single camera we shoot like a movie. Was there
• 11:54
Speaker 1: any pressure on you to make this idea you had
• 11:57
Speaker 1: a sitcom and did you have to affg yeah.
• 11:59
Speaker 4: They The best thing that Spin City bought me was
• 12:02
Speaker 4: the financial and professional security to what happens in television
• 12:07
Speaker 4: often is you'll create a show. Hey, I'm going to
• 12:10
Speaker 4: do a show about a young married couple and what
• 12:13
Speaker 4: it's really like and I'm not going to compromise it
• 12:15
Speaker 4: at all, and then you'll go sell it to a
• 12:17
Speaker 4: network and when you come out, you're like, all right,
• 12:19
Speaker 4: it's the same show. I mean we have a kid
• 12:21
Speaker 4: that's six that speaks like a thirty year old, and
• 12:24
Speaker 4: I do have superpowers now, but otherwise otherwise it is
• 12:29
Speaker 4: like the exact same, right, And so with this show,
• 12:32
Speaker 4: when I said, I was so convinced to be a failure,
• 12:35
Speaker 4: because like early on ABC, we're like, hey, that show
• 12:38
Speaker 4: is interesting. Maybe the doctor Cox character should be married,
• 12:41
  Speaker 4: and we'll just it's a sitcom.
• 12:43
Speaker 5: We see him at home, we see him at work.
• 12:44
Speaker 5: I'm like, yeah, I'm not going to do that.
• 12:46
Speaker 4: And it was never really an issue for me because
• 12:49
Speaker 4: I was so convinced that this would never work anyways.
• 12:51
Speaker 4: I just wanted to stick with what I thought would
• 12:53
Speaker 4: be cool, you know, and what would work. So there
• 12:57
Speaker 4: was a lot of pressure. The only thing that this
• 12:59
Speaker 4: episode sode resonates in a huge way because the president
• 13:03
Speaker 4: of NBC at the time was convinced that single camera
• 13:05
Speaker 4: comedy shows weren't funny, and uh so I'm like, I'm
• 13:10
Speaker 4: going to keep this show on by decorating it with
• 13:13
Speaker 4: every bell and whistle I can. So this is one
• 13:16
Speaker 4: of the last I think there's only a couple more
• 13:18
Speaker 4: episodes after this that still have sound effects.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's something I wanted to talk about is we
• 13:23
Speaker 1: start going through the show.
• 13:26
Speaker 2: Just so we're clear though, who was the president of
• 13:28
Speaker 2: the network? Was the president? What was Sassa? What was Sassa?
• 13:34
Speaker 4: Scott Sassa was very sassified.
• 13:35
Speaker 1: All right, So, uh, this is Bill Bill in an
• 13:38
Speaker 1: episode that will have aired by the time this airs,
• 13:40
Speaker 1: because in episode two we talk about the infamous time
• 13:43
Speaker 1: that Donald gave a nouggie to Jeff Zucker and he said,
• 13:46
Speaker 1: please Donald, no, And but my I.
• 13:49
Speaker 2: Was I always thought at the time, I thought that
• 13:53
Speaker 2: Jeff Zucker was Scott Sass's assistant.
• 13:58
  Speaker 5: No, he was.
• 13:58
  Speaker 3: He was.
• 13:58
Speaker 4: Scott Sasa got shuffled out right as Jeff Zucker came in.
• 14:04
Speaker 4: Jeff Zucker now run CNA. He's one of the most
• 14:06
Speaker 4: powerful guys you know in the news world. Scott Sasa
• 14:10
Speaker 4: is claimed to fame with me because there's always a
• 14:12
Speaker 4: disconnect with executives that really didn't know how this worked.
• 14:15
Speaker 5: And what's really interesting is if you.
• 14:17
Speaker 4: Look at the credits of Scrubs, the only title in
• 14:22
Speaker 4: the writers that has writer next to it is staff writer,
• 14:24
Speaker 4: which is the lowest rank on the totem pole, and
• 14:27
Speaker 4: then the other writers on the show. Our story editor
• 14:30
  Speaker 4: co producer things.
• 14:31
Speaker 5: That don't necessarily say writer.
• 14:33
Speaker 4: And when I handed in the first three scripts, you know,
• 14:35
Speaker 4: a showrunner always rewrites everything on any show. We had
• 14:39
Speaker 4: a great writing staff, but I was still doing that.
• 14:41
Speaker 4: A Scott Sasa called me up. He's like, I read
• 14:43
Speaker 4: the first three scripts and I got to say, those
• 14:47
Speaker 4: three staff writers you hired, because he thought that was
• 14:49
Speaker 4: the whole writing staff was three people. Those three straft
• 14:52
Speaker 4: writers you hired really nailed it and really captured your
• 14:54
Speaker 4: voice from the pilot. I wanted to be like, well,
• 14:57
Speaker 4: first of all, they didn't because I wrote the and secondly, secondly,
• 15:02
Speaker 4: those three staff writers are all like twenty one and
• 15:04
Speaker 4: they've never worked on a show before.
• 15:07
  Speaker 5: So crazy man.
• 15:08
Speaker 4: And then he shockingly got fired and uh, Jeff Sucker
• 15:12
Speaker 4: replaced him right before Donald kissed his head.
• 15:14
Speaker 1: Right kiss his head.
• 15:17
  Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah.
• 15:19
Speaker 4: By the way, you know what, we missed a good
• 15:20
Speaker 4: bit of scrubs trivia. I got to say it.
• 15:22
Speaker 5: I forget it. Do you guys remember Real j D's
• 15:25
  Speaker 5: wife's name.
• 15:26
Speaker 4: She's Elliott and real do you know her last name?
• 15:31
Speaker 4: The maid last name, No, her maiden last name was
• 15:34
Speaker 4: is Dolly Clock. I'm horrible at naming characters. Do you
• 15:37
Speaker 4: remember a character on our show named Molly Clock.
• 15:40
Speaker 1: That was Heather Graham?
• 15:42
Speaker 4: Yes, wow you John. Yeah.
• 15:45
Speaker 1: By the way, a lot of our fans Bill On.
• 15:47
Speaker 1: When we put the first episode out, we asked the question.
• 15:51
  Speaker 1: I asked a random question saying I don't even know
• 15:53
Speaker 1: what sitcom set that was, and like my whole Twitter
• 15:55
Speaker 1: feed was like answering that it was the Damon Wayne's show,
• 16:00
Speaker 1: Kids Kids. There you go, So everyone probably Donald question
• 16:05
  Speaker 1: before right away?
• 16:06
Speaker 2: You know my favorite, my favorite part of this show
• 16:09
Speaker 2: and it's not even the a storyline in this episode
• 16:12
Speaker 2: is the clock the countdown. You could have made the
• 16:15
Speaker 2: whole show about that. That was. That could have been
• 16:17
  Speaker 2: the whole show.
• 16:19
Speaker 4: That's that's a good writer trick. You put an imaginary
• 16:22
Speaker 4: ticking clock on something and everybody invests in it.
• 16:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, that was clever. Wait before we get to the show,
• 16:26
Speaker 1: I just want to ask another trivia thing of Bill.
• 16:29
Speaker 1: I got so geeked out. I really did my homework
• 16:31
  Speaker 1: this week.
• 16:32
Speaker 4: And like, before you go, I want to tell Donald
• 16:36
Speaker 4: because he can look him up. There's a picture of
• 16:38
Speaker 4: Donald and the surgeon he was based on. Donald would
• 16:42
Speaker 4: be named John Turk because that's the surgeon's name, but
• 16:45
Speaker 4: j D was already John, so he became Chris Turk.
• 16:48
Speaker 4: There's a picture of you with your arm around John
• 16:50
Speaker 4: Turk when he visited set once, and I'm not even
• 16:52
Speaker 4: sure who he was.
• 16:54
Speaker 2: I remember when he came and visited. He was like,
• 16:55
Speaker 2: I'm Turk, and I remember him being white and me
• 16:57
Speaker 2: being like, oh snap, but you're.
• 17:04
Speaker 1: Donald was like, you're not. I'm I want to just
• 17:10
Speaker 1: want to do one other bit of trivia, that is
• 17:12
Speaker 1: that ABC passed on the show. Yeah, so for those
• 17:17
Speaker 1: of you who don't know, the show is produced by
• 17:20
Speaker 1: ABC Studios, and ABC the network gets first crack at
• 17:25
Speaker 1: things if the studios produces it. And our show ended
• 17:28
Speaker 1: up on NBC. So tell us how that happened.
• 17:30
Speaker 4: The dude is a true story and I'm not even
• 17:33
Speaker 4: going to out him because hes a nice man. When
• 17:35
Speaker 4: I pitched this show to the people that ran the
• 17:38
Speaker 4: ABC network, Uh, one of the dudes had a chair
• 17:42
Speaker 4: that you know, kind of blocked you could wean back
• 17:44
Speaker 4: into that blocked the view of his head. And about
• 17:46
Speaker 4: midway through the pitch, like a guy like a bad
• 17:48
Speaker 4: guy in a movie, and midway through the pitch, we
• 17:52
Speaker 4: all heard audible snoring.
• 17:54
Speaker 5: You had a night I think before.
• 17:57
  Speaker 2: B b B B b b B.
• 18:00
Speaker 5: And I was literally like, I don't think this pitch
• 18:02
Speaker 5: is going that well. Guys like, I'm.
• 18:08
Speaker 4: Not sure this is what you would call a sale
• 18:10
Speaker 4: in the room because that the dude that the dude
• 18:12
Speaker 4: that buys is snoozing. So they didn't buy it, and
• 18:17
Speaker 4: the guy that ran ABC Studios said, you got to
• 18:20
Speaker 4: wait five months. But then since they hated it, I'll say, hey,
• 18:24
Speaker 4: can I have permission to go sell this somewhere else?
• 18:26
Speaker 4: And they'll think it'll never sell, so they'll say okay,
• 18:29
Speaker 4: And then I went and sold TENBC.
• 18:30
Speaker 5: But it was why the life of our show was
• 18:32
  Speaker 5: so weird.
• 18:33
Speaker 4: We were one of the only shows on NBC completely
• 18:38
Speaker 4: owned by ABC, which is why time slot would be
• 18:41
Speaker 4: moved around and not always protected and stuff.
• 18:43
Speaker 5: So it was it was a weird business arrangement.
• 18:45
Speaker 1: I always wonder how that goes in the TV landscape
• 18:48
Speaker 1: when like, you know, you hear these stories of oh,
• 18:50
Speaker 1: every like everybody passed on Breaking Bad, you know, and
• 18:53
Speaker 1: the guy at ABC who passed on Scrubs, Like I
• 18:55
Speaker 1: just wonder if they if they fuck with each other
• 18:57
Speaker 1: in the hallways, like good job, Tim, You know the.
• 19:01
  Speaker 5: Moment I had.
• 19:02
Speaker 4: There is a great guy at ABC who ran it
• 19:04
Speaker 4: for a while and is now a producer named Stu Bloomberg.
• 19:07
Speaker 4: And he ran into me after our first year and
• 19:09
Speaker 4: he goes, you know, I didn't he heard that pitch.
• 19:11
  Speaker 4: He was there.
• 19:12
Speaker 5: He's like, I heard that pitch and I didn't get it.
• 19:13
Speaker 5: Now I get it. I feel like an idiot. And
• 19:15
Speaker 5: I thought, oh, that's really cool.
• 19:16
  Speaker 4: So it was.
• 19:17
Speaker 5: He was very nice about it. At least he was
• 19:19
Speaker 5: not the one that fell asleep.
• 19:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, will you tell us about casting Turk?
• 19:23
Speaker 2: And Wow, you're just going to get right into it.
• 19:26
Speaker 1: Well, I literally have like hours of questions for Bill,
• 19:30
Speaker 1: but I know we want to also do the episode.
• 19:31
Speaker 1: But tell tell us about just you know about We
• 19:34
Speaker 1: obviously want to know from your experience because we shared
• 19:36
Speaker 1: our experience in the in the first episode, but your
• 19:39
Speaker 1: experience of of finding Donald.
• 19:41
  Speaker 4: Uh.
• 19:41
Speaker 5: I was a Donald fan already.
• 19:43
Speaker 4: I'd seen Klulis, you know, and uh I just thought
• 19:45
Speaker 4: he was really funny and and and he killed all
• 19:47
Speaker 4: his auditions and uh in the test part of it.
• 19:53
Speaker 4: You know, it's really interesting because I feel like I
• 19:58
Speaker 4: both hurt and then saved Donald in a way to
• 20:01
Speaker 4: make myself look like a hero feel pretty cool about it,
• 20:04
Speaker 4: which is, you know, the one thing I tell people
• 20:07
Speaker 4: that don't understand what network tests used to be. It
• 20:11
Speaker 4: literally used to be that you would come as an
• 20:14
Speaker 4: actor and actress and stand in the head of casting's
• 20:18
Speaker 4: office while twenty people were in the back sitting or
• 20:23
Speaker 4: you know, leaning against the window judging you, and you'd
• 20:26
Speaker 4: have one chance. If you're actually shooting the show, you'd
• 20:29
Speaker 4: have twenty chances, but you'd have one chance to do
• 20:32
Speaker 4: it not mess up, you know, and also somehow make
• 20:36
Speaker 4: a room of people that all feel weird to be
• 20:38
Speaker 4: standing in someone's office anyways.
• 20:40
  Speaker 2: Laugh.
• 20:41
Speaker 5: So I used to tell everybody.
• 20:42
Speaker 4: You know, the biggest curse in the world is low energy.
• 20:47
Speaker 4: You know what I mean, because if you come into
• 20:48
Speaker 4: those low energy everybody's going to be like, oh, this
• 20:50
Speaker 4: is horrible. And the one mistake I made with Donald
• 20:54
Speaker 4: is if you tell Donald, once you dial up that
• 20:57
Speaker 4: energy to eleven, I know where this is show, Why
• 21:03
Speaker 4: don't you make sure you dial that energy up to eleven?
• 21:05
Speaker 5: Everybody, Donald, I mean Donald's like, hello Los Angeles, and
• 21:13
Speaker 5: he came in and he.
• 21:16
Speaker 4: Did he did his audition and the truth is he
• 21:20
Speaker 4: did crush all the comedy about when he left. They're like,
• 21:24
Speaker 4: that guy's energy was fantastic and he's really funny, but
• 21:28
Speaker 4: he very obviously can't do any of the sincere or
• 21:31
Speaker 4: dramatic moments because he's an insane person. And and I'm like, no, no, no,
• 21:38
Speaker 4: you can that's me.
• 21:39
  Speaker 2: That's me.
• 21:40
Speaker 5: And they never do this.
• 21:41
Speaker 4: But I had luckily been through the process before in
• 21:42
Speaker 4: a different show, and so I went out to Donald
• 21:45
Speaker 4: and tried to make it very grave because I wanted
• 21:48
Speaker 4: him to come in then and just play the drama
• 21:51
Speaker 4: of everything, you know, because I'm like, I told all
• 21:53
Speaker 4: of them, I'm like, look, that's my note. And if
• 21:56
Speaker 4: he comes back and does it the other way, you'll
• 21:57
Speaker 4: see you can do whatever we want.
• 21:58
Speaker 5: It's a single camera show, you know.
• 22:00
Speaker 4: And I went back to Donald and I'm like, I
• 22:03
Speaker 4: think I said something like, all right, they thought you
• 22:05
Speaker 4: suck shit. Yeah, things, I thought.
• 22:08
Speaker 2: You would come to tell me, all right, you got
• 22:10
Speaker 2: the part. You were like, so I'm walking out. I
• 22:12
Speaker 2: remember skipping into the room like here we go, Here
• 22:16
Speaker 2: we fucking go, And you were like so that really
• 22:19
  Speaker 2: was horrible.
• 22:21
Speaker 4: For them. For them, that was too much. I think
• 22:25
Speaker 4: much is the word no, but the uh but then
• 22:28
Speaker 4: I just we talked for a while and I'm just like,
• 22:29
Speaker 4: just dial it down and now play it like it's
• 22:31
Speaker 4: not a comedy and play the drama of it.
• 22:33
Speaker 5: Donald came back in, and this is.
• 22:35
Speaker 4: A compliment to his acting ability. He came back in
• 22:38
Speaker 4: and then he did it as if he wasn't looking
• 22:40
Speaker 4: for any laughs or energy, and he walked out. I'm
• 22:42
Speaker 4: sure shook by doing it again. And the second he
• 22:45
Speaker 4: walked out, the head of NBC casting gout named Mark Hirschfeld,
• 22:48
Speaker 4: was like, Oh, I see it totally.
• 22:49
  Speaker 5: He's got it.
• 22:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you, well, thank you well. First of all,
• 22:53
Speaker 2: thank you very much for being a hero and ste
• 22:56
  Speaker 2: I'm not a here.
• 22:57
Speaker 4: I don't have the best bedside manner.
• 22:58
Speaker 5: You guys know that.
• 22:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, but it doesn't matter though. Man, you got the
• 23:01
Speaker 2: point across. And look, dude, twenty something years later, I
• 23:05
Speaker 2: owe you a lot.
• 23:06
  Speaker 3: Bro.
• 23:09
  Speaker 1: Well, I remember it's so intimidating. I almost I think
• 23:11
Speaker 1: that may have been the first time I ever made
• 23:13
Speaker 1: it to a network test and it was down to
• 23:15
Speaker 1: four of us and literally everyone there must have been
• 23:18
Speaker 1: thirty people crammed into a small office It was the
• 23:21
Speaker 1: most awkward environment to ever try and do a good job.
• 23:25
Speaker 2: What was this for?
• 23:26
Speaker 1: This was for scrubs?
• 23:28
  Speaker 2: Really it was.
• 23:28
Speaker 1: That guy Mark, wasn't it Bill Mark Hirsche show. Yeah.
• 23:32
Speaker 1: Everyone was crammed into his office and I was very nervous,
• 23:36
Speaker 1: and Sarah was there to read with me for her scenes.
• 23:40
Speaker 1: But I remember feeling my adrenaline come up, like I
• 23:42
Speaker 1: was almost going to have a panic attack, and I
• 23:44
Speaker 1: was like, not today.
• 23:47
Speaker 4: Well, you know, you know, I cheated. Everybody cheats. I
• 23:50
Speaker 4: cheated for the people I wanted to get the part.
• 23:53
Speaker 4: So you guys both had extra lines and jokes and
• 23:55
Speaker 4: moments that we had all come up with and found
• 23:59
Speaker 4: together that other apps actors weren't doing right. And then
• 24:02
Speaker 4: when I at the beginning, when I go in and
• 24:03
Speaker 4: talk to everybody, I'm like, hey, I'm really into everybody
• 24:05
Speaker 4: bringing their own flavor. And so some of these actors
• 24:08
Speaker 4: and actresses have stuff that they've brought on their own
• 24:10
Speaker 4: and I let them do it. But it's not true,
• 24:13
Speaker 4: you know what I mean. It's just you two and
• 24:15
Speaker 4: Sarah had stuff that you brought on your own that
• 24:17
Speaker 4: we let you do.
• 24:18
  Speaker 2: Well, I didn't.
• 24:18
Speaker 1: I remember the time thinking that's so awesome. He feels
• 24:22
Speaker 1: like he's rooting for me, but is he doing that
• 24:24
Speaker 1: with everyone? Like I didn't you know that? No, I knew.
• 24:27
Speaker 1: I knew since then you've told me that. But at
• 24:28
  Speaker 1: the time I'm thinking, like I think I think I
• 24:31
Speaker 1: might be his favorite, Like I'm getting the extra jokes.
• 24:34
Speaker 4: The you know, the only one that it's great trivia,
• 24:36
Speaker 4: the only one that we didn't know what was going
• 24:40
Speaker 4: to happen, and we shifted gears a little bit of
• 24:43
Speaker 4: like what are we going to do if this doesn't happen?
• 24:45
Speaker 4: It's fascinating and when you have him on the guest
• 24:48
Speaker 4: as a guest, I'll tell you I wrote in the
• 24:50
Speaker 4: script like we were looking for a John c McGinley
• 24:52
Speaker 4: type for doctor Cox. And John came in and read
• 24:56
Speaker 4: it and was fucking he was amazing. And then at
• 24:59
Speaker 4: the studio he did something completely different and high energy
• 25:05
Speaker 4: John and his intensity dial had been dialed up like
• 25:08
Speaker 4: ten notches and the reaction of the studio was like, whoa,
• 25:12
Speaker 4: that is way too And unlike with you guys, I
• 25:17
Speaker 4: wasn't even confident enough to bring John back in and go, hey,
• 25:20
Speaker 4: you did that wrong, because I feel like what would
• 25:23
Speaker 4: follow would be a hard blow to the face, you know,
• 25:28
Speaker 4: Oh my god, get off my neck, Get off my neck.
• 25:32
Speaker 5: And uh. And so we had this giant level.
• 25:36
Speaker 4: Me and the casting directors, you know, bretton Debbie were like, uh,
• 25:39
Speaker 4: oh man, who's it going to be if it because
• 25:41
Speaker 4: for us it was John McGinley, And we went into
• 25:44
Speaker 4: the network and just said just cross your fingers. And
• 25:47
Speaker 4: he came into the network and did it completely different
• 25:50
Speaker 4: without anybody having spoken to him. And this the Johnny
• 25:53
Speaker 4: C dialed down ten notches and literally walked out of
• 25:56
Speaker 4: there as if with the thought. He almost said I
• 25:58
Speaker 4: got this as he left. It was just so Johnny C.
• 26:02
Speaker 4: He was older, he did it. And then I'm like,
• 26:04
Speaker 4: you feel good? He's like, cash, see you.
• 26:11
Speaker 1: Johnny C had so many expressions that he would always say.
• 26:14
Speaker 1: We were talking about five good ones and and cash
• 26:17
Speaker 1: and and how he's better now?
• 26:19
Speaker 4: How you doing better now?
• 26:20
  Speaker 2: Better now?
• 26:21
Speaker 1: How are you doing? Here's five good ones for you.
• 26:23
Speaker 1: How you doing better now? And then how he'd say
• 26:27
Speaker 1: to the editor. We'd finish a scene and our editor's
• 26:30
Speaker 1: name was John Michelle, and he goes, well, we gave
• 26:32
Speaker 1: John Michelle some momo.
• 26:35
Speaker 5: Some ammo I love that, dude. Man, that's funny.
• 26:38
Speaker 2: Speaking that you went out for like a Johnny C
• 26:40
Speaker 2: type and everything like that. I find it so funny
• 26:43
Speaker 2: that when that's almost like a gift and a curse
• 26:45
Speaker 2: when they when they say that we talked about this
• 26:48
Speaker 2: in the last podcast, you know what I mean When
• 26:51
Speaker 2: they say we're looking for a Zach Brafft type, they're
• 26:53
Speaker 2: not looking for Zach braff though, they're looking for a Zach.
• 26:56
Speaker 1: Braff They want Zach braff Ish.
• 26:59
Speaker 4: You know what. Although I think I thought it's different
• 27:02
Speaker 4: if like, and this is a compliment, like right now,
• 27:05
Speaker 4: both of you guys, you say Zach Brafford, Donald Faizon,
• 27:07
Speaker 4: they're going TV star.
• 27:09
Speaker 5: When I said John C McGinley type, at the time.
• 27:11
Speaker 4: It just meant a character actor, you know, with kind
• 27:15
Speaker 4: of an intensity thing. It wasn't like he was a
• 27:17
Speaker 4: household name, you know what I mean. So I don't
• 27:19
Speaker 4: think it cursed him as much because there's no insult
• 27:23
Speaker 4: to him. Seven out of ten people that read the
• 27:25
Speaker 4: script or like, no, no, no, cool, who's John C McGinley,
• 27:29
Speaker 4: you know what I mean?
• 27:29
Speaker 5: And so he didn't.
• 27:33
Speaker 4: Yes, you guy, you mean off the space. But that's
• 27:39
Speaker 4: a different guy. No, it's the same guy.
• 27:41
Speaker 5: No, that's not the same guy.
• 27:43
Speaker 4: So uh now if you say John C McGinley type,
• 27:46
Speaker 4: people are like, oh yeah, arms crossed, super intense, you know, but.
• 27:49
Speaker 5: That scary, scary, intimidating.
• 27:55
Speaker 1: And then we were we were afraid of Bill in
• 27:57
Speaker 1: the beginning, but then when we got like more friends.
• 28:00
Speaker 2: Said that, well, you know, I did say one thing.
• 28:02
Speaker 2: I did say one thing, and because of it, because
• 28:05
Speaker 2: of it, it stuck with me for the rest of
• 28:08
Speaker 2: the fucking show. And I said one time, I was like,
• 28:11
Speaker 2: you know, Bill said to everybody, he was like, look,
• 28:14
Speaker 2: I'm going to write for all of you whatever you do,
• 28:17
Speaker 2: just don't come in my fucking office and say, how
• 28:19
Speaker 2: come I'm not in the show this week. And so
• 28:22
Speaker 2: as a joke, I went into his office. I was like, dude,
• 28:25
Speaker 2: I'm fucking barely in the show this week. And he
• 28:28
Speaker 2: was like, oh, yeah, you got Faison And that stuck
• 28:31
Speaker 2: with me. But do you remember phase on dude, Oh.
• 28:35
Speaker 1: My goodness, I totally forgot about that. So Donald did that.
• 28:40
Speaker 1: And then for the rest of the show, when you
• 28:41
Speaker 1: were when you were late, when you barely had anything
• 28:43
Speaker 1: to do in the episode, people like, oh, man, I
• 28:44
Speaker 1: got Faison, I Gotason. I remember.
• 28:47
Speaker 4: There's only two things I remember like that. I remember
• 28:49
Speaker 4: fasoned and I remember even saying to guest actors, see
• 28:54
Speaker 4: if you guys remember this. A guest actor would be like,
• 28:57
Speaker 4: I still don't think I nailed that line.
• 28:58
Speaker 5: I'm like, dude, I don't have time for you to
• 29:00
  Speaker 5: Sarah one Morsey.
• 29:01
Speaker 1: Because there's a song one Sarah one more. She wants
• 29:09
Speaker 1: one more when she's had seven. Because Sarah, no matter
• 29:16
Speaker 1: how many takes she did, like, she'd be like the
• 29:18
Speaker 1: director would always be like, Okay, Sarah, you good. Can
• 29:19
Speaker 1: we move on one more?
• 29:21
  Speaker 5: One more?
• 29:22
Speaker 4: And I'll be like, there's something so good about a
• 29:24
  Speaker 4: confused guest actor's face when I'm like, dude, I don't
• 29:27
Speaker 4: have time to Sarah one Morsey right now?
• 29:29
Speaker 5: Thought I was speaking like kling On.
• 29:30
  Speaker 4: It is gibberish.
• 29:31
Speaker 1: That song had like a nice hook to it. She
• 29:33
Speaker 1: wants one more when she's had five.
• 29:36
Speaker 4: So hey, you know what's interesting? I can I remember
• 29:41
Speaker 4: something donald about someone choosing to take in this episode.
• 29:44
Speaker 5: I wish I could remember who said.
• 29:46
Speaker 4: It might have been Neil Goldman because he was up
• 29:48
Speaker 4: on set, but it's in the cut and I didn't
• 29:51
Speaker 4: have it in the initial cut, and he said there's
• 29:53
Speaker 4: one take where Donald comes in and says, uh, does
• 29:58
Speaker 4: has anybody seen my keys? How about my wallet? And
• 30:00
Speaker 4: he says, hell about my wallet? Like Chris Rock about.
• 30:06
Speaker 4: I literally went back to the cut and I went
• 30:08
Speaker 4: back to the cut, watched that master and you're like,
• 30:10
Speaker 4: how about my wallet?
• 30:13
Speaker 1: Donald? Was that Chris Rock inspired?
• 30:14
Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you, now, that's probably Eddie Murphy inspired. Obviously, Yeah,
• 30:19
Speaker 2: but it was there. How well, there's there's that one
• 30:22
Speaker 2: and the one that we used to laugh at all
• 30:25
Speaker 2: the time from this episode is I tried to discover something.
• 30:36
Speaker 2: I remember we laughed for days about that.
• 30:39
Speaker 1: You're really funny in this episode.
• 30:40
Speaker 4: I wanted to say, yes, you are.
• 30:47
Speaker 2: Now that we're talking about the episode, I.
• 30:51
Speaker 1: Was going to say that we can segue to these
• 30:52
  Speaker 1: This is.
• 30:53
Speaker 2: Episode three, uh, my best Friend's Mistake, and first of all,
• 30:58
Speaker 2: as a show, caught our stride. I feel like in
• 31:01
Speaker 2: this episode. Now, the next episode that's after this is
• 31:05
Speaker 2: My Old Lady and I think that's the third episode
• 31:07
Speaker 2: we shot, but this episode aired before My Old Lady Whip.
• 31:12
Speaker 1: I'm correct, Bill, Why why were Donald and I you'll
• 31:15
Speaker 1: have the answer to this. Both Donald and I forever
• 31:18
Speaker 1: have always said, oh, one of three was the episode
• 31:20
Speaker 1: where we lose three patients, and it was kind of
• 31:22
Speaker 1: like a good hitting our stride moment. And then both
• 31:24
Speaker 1: of us this morning went to go rewatch the show
• 31:27
Speaker 1: and we're like, oh, one of three is not that?
• 31:29
Speaker 1: Did they twitch around?
• 31:30
Speaker 5: I'm almost positive, but I gotta go look.
• 31:33
Speaker 4: The pilot and the next one or two were directed
• 31:39
  Speaker 4: by Adam Bernstein.
• 31:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, I can help you out because Joelle, our amazing producer,
• 31:43
Speaker 1: made a note here that she said, I read this
• 31:45
Speaker 1: was originally supposed to be episode two, this one.
• 31:48
Speaker 4: It wasn't that as much as because we fixed that
• 31:51
Speaker 4: in scripting stage. They wanted me to repilot and I
• 31:53
Speaker 4: wrote episode two that you guys talked about. And then
• 31:56
Speaker 4: Adam didn't want to go away for a week and
• 31:57
Speaker 4: come back, so he was directing two episodes in a row.
• 32:05
Speaker 4: I think we crossboarded even a little bit. I can't remember,
• 32:07
Speaker 4: off to check. And then Mark Bucklin directed The Mild Lady.
• 32:11
Speaker 4: After this, even though it was the third episode, we
• 32:13
Speaker 4: were going to split them up, okay, because Adam was
• 32:15
Speaker 4: it coming from New York and even though we were
• 32:17
Speaker 4: going to go, you're going to direct the first episode.
• 32:20
Speaker 5: In the third episode, he's like, yeah, I'm not flying
• 32:22
Speaker 5: home and coming back.
• 32:23
Speaker 4: I'll do all the prep before do him, you know,
• 32:25
  Speaker 4: because he's a quirky character.
• 32:27
Speaker 1: So then we slipped New York. Still this day, I've
• 32:30
Speaker 1: tried to get him to come do with other things
• 32:32
Speaker 1: in the years since, and he's like, I don't really
• 32:34
Speaker 1: like to leave New York.
• 32:36
Speaker 4: Donald smart because we did catch our stride with two things.
• 32:39
Speaker 4: And I'll see if you guys that we used to
• 32:42
Speaker 4: have this big wall of things that we were trying
• 32:44
Speaker 4: to establish as motifs for the show, and this one
• 32:48
Speaker 4: was we had a super long discussion. The reason we
• 32:51
Speaker 4: did that runner about how important music was going to
• 32:53
Speaker 4: be in this show. And so we're like, we're even
• 32:56
Speaker 4: going to make a song travel around the show like
• 32:58
Speaker 4: a virus, and you know that'll be the start of
• 33:02
Speaker 4: how queuing people in that music isn't just background on
• 33:06
Speaker 4: this show. It has huge importance. You know. The song
• 33:10
Speaker 4: that we chose, I'm So in Love with You, you know,
• 33:13
Speaker 4: just gonna be able to it was it was specifically
• 33:14
Speaker 4: about what was going on in those scenes. It wasn't
• 33:17
Speaker 4: just a viral song, and we were trying to train
• 33:20
Speaker 4: people to go, oh, I'm supposed to listen to the
• 33:22
Speaker 4: words of the song too, because they're about what we're
• 33:24
Speaker 4: actually doing. And the second thing, which is why it
• 33:27
Speaker 4: was important that Bernstein was there, was when we first
• 33:30
Speaker 4: discussed that the camera is a character.
• 33:33
Speaker 5: And it's the first time we did a cowboy switch.
• 33:36
Speaker 4: When Zach's running to meet Elliott, that a stuntman dives
• 33:40
Speaker 4: and takes a face plant and the camera doesn't just cut,
• 33:44
Speaker 4: It goes around looking for him like it's like it's
• 33:47
Speaker 4: an actual charity too, you know.
• 33:48
Speaker 5: And then Zach puts up like this, Yeah.
• 33:51
Speaker 4: So if there was a thought bubble, you could have
• 33:53
Speaker 4: almost looped in the camera going where'd you go? And
• 33:57
Speaker 4: and so those two things kind of set a creatative
• 34:00
Speaker 4: course for the show in ways that you know, we
• 34:03
Speaker 4: kind of ran with after this.
• 34:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't remember this one so much. And then
• 34:07
Speaker 1: as I was watching and I was going, wow, there
• 34:09
Speaker 1: was there's a lot in this episode that are little
• 34:11
Speaker 1: moments that stuck with me forever, like the friend zone
• 34:15
Speaker 1: and and the timer and the creative timer clock thing.
• 34:19
Speaker 1: Every time I see Sarah and and Donald, uh, you know,
• 34:23
Speaker 1: There's a lot of things that were that were used
• 34:25
Speaker 1: throughout the show too, that that are established here, Like
• 34:27
Speaker 1: it's the first time we see Donald playing basketball, and
• 34:31
Speaker 1: you look very good now and you look very fit.
• 34:33
Speaker 2: I wish I could get back into that shape.
• 34:35
Speaker 1: You can do so they eat too much shit.
• 34:38
Speaker 2: Well, twenty six years old body compared to a forty
• 34:41
Speaker 2: six year old body is a big, big, big, big difference. Man.
• 34:44
Speaker 1: Well, I I really I took notice that you looked fire.
• 34:48
  Speaker 3: Well.
• 34:48
Speaker 2: I accept and receive that, and so did Rob.
• 34:52
Speaker 4: Mashioh Rob Roy any of black hair? U? I got
• 35:00
Speaker 4: to tell you, man.
• 35:01
Speaker 5: So this is one of the things I get mocked for.
• 35:03
Speaker 4: Why this episode stuck in my head was we all
• 35:07
Speaker 4: have those things, like remember when you you share something
• 35:09
Speaker 4: with friends that you wish you hadn't or or you're
• 35:13
Speaker 4: drunk and you say something to it's a shiver story.
• 35:14
Speaker 4: When you think back, you're like, oh.
• 35:16
Speaker 1: Yes, Donald getting a nugge to Jef Zucker.
• 35:18
Speaker 5: Yes, so one of mine.
• 35:21
Speaker 4: And in writer's rooms you tell personal stories. Was in
• 35:25
Speaker 4: a fraternity? Really? I was in a fraternity? Yeah no,
• 35:28
  Speaker 4: I was?
• 35:29
Speaker 2: And uh uh you were in a fraternity?
• 35:31
Speaker 4: Yeah no, I swear Okay. In college, we were all
• 35:36
Speaker 4: drinking and hanging out and I was a little buzzy,
• 35:40
Speaker 4: and I had a hometown girlfriend, and you really think
• 35:45
Speaker 4: you can go and you care that much about her,
• 35:47
Speaker 4: and I said, and it haunted me for the rest
• 35:49
Speaker 4: of the year. They tortured me. I said, dude, I
• 35:52
Speaker 4: miss her so much it hurts sometimes. And that became
• 35:57
Speaker 4: one of the memes from this show because the mental.
• 36:03
Speaker 1: I gotta tell you of all the memes and and
• 36:05
Speaker 1: anything I get, gifts I get sent I miss you
• 36:09
Speaker 1: so much it hurts sometimes, is one of the most common.
• 36:12
Speaker 4: And it's also, by the way, the core of how
• 36:19
Speaker 4: to use you know. I said, Look, voiceover can be
• 36:22
Speaker 4: a crutch comedically because it's so easy. And when I teach,
• 36:25
Speaker 4: like the Writers Guild, they're like, what do you mean how,
• 36:27
Speaker 4: I'm like, well, the easiest way is to state a
• 36:31
Speaker 4: premise in your voiceover and then do the opposite. An
• 36:33
Speaker 4: example is just tell Turk how you feel without sounding
• 36:37
Speaker 4: like you know a girl for once.
• 36:39
Speaker 5: I miss you so much it hurts sometimes, you know.
• 36:41
Speaker 4: Another one was when Elliott had the voiceover, or is
• 36:45
Speaker 4: when Kelso spilled stuff on his face. Whatever you do,
• 36:48
Speaker 4: do not say the word splotchy, and I think, j D,
• 36:51
Speaker 4: I think you just said good splotchy, doctor splotch instead
• 36:57
Speaker 4: of why would you even say good splot that's not
• 37:00
  Speaker 4: even a work.
• 37:01
Speaker 1: Good splotsheet splotsheet anyways, all right, So I wanted to
• 37:05
Speaker 1: say at forty nine seconds in is my first Muppet
• 37:08
Speaker 1: exit that I ever did in the show Scrubs, which
• 37:12
Speaker 1: which which I always thought of, was when I when
• 37:14
Speaker 1: I would just turn my head. I always I always
• 37:16
Speaker 1: laughed at how Kermit the Frog and all the Muppets
• 37:19
Speaker 1: Sesame Street characters would always turn and then and then
• 37:21
  Speaker 1: walk out. Yeah, so I h when I when I
• 37:25
Speaker 1: leave the viewing room here, I sort of do a
• 37:28
Speaker 1: side turn and I just kind of laughed. I think
• 37:30
Speaker 1: that was the first time I tried out my successful
• 37:32
  Speaker 1: Muppet exit.
• 37:34
Speaker 2: You used also ever got yeah became.
• 37:36
Speaker 1: Well it was it was a go to bill at
• 37:39
Speaker 1: one eleven. There's an exterior shot of the hospital that
• 37:41
Speaker 1: has never ever seen again, I don't think. And I
• 37:43
Speaker 1: noticed that it says something about women's on the top
• 37:46
  Speaker 1: of it.
• 37:47
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't.
• 37:47
  Speaker 5: I didn't paint it out.
• 37:49
Speaker 1: We didn't have the budget at the time to be
• 37:51
Speaker 1: painting or no to be painting things out. But it's
• 37:54
Speaker 1: funny watching the early episodes, there's like, it looks like
• 37:56
Speaker 1: you guys were it looks like someone was like, do
• 37:58
Speaker 1: we have an exterior shot at the hospital? Nah? How
• 38:00
Speaker 1: about that one? All right?
• 38:01
Speaker 4: Well, we went and shot a bunch of stuff that
• 38:03
Speaker 4: we used in the pilot, and then once we ran
• 38:06
Speaker 4: out of that stuff, we just started shooting into our
• 38:08
  Speaker 4: own building.
• 38:09
Speaker 1: Right. But this one was this This was not because
• 38:12
Speaker 1: it says women's something at the top.
• 38:14
Speaker 4: Yeah, No, it was particularly bad. There's a lot of
• 38:15
Speaker 4: bad stuff in here, guys. You know.
• 38:18
Speaker 5: I always get shipped.
• 38:18
Speaker 4: For that because I'm always like you guys, remember my
• 38:21
Speaker 4: favorite thing to say when we're so busy is I'll
• 38:24
Speaker 4: take all I'll take all the mail on that, Okay,
• 38:27
Speaker 4: So someone like an editor would come up and go,
• 38:29
Speaker 4: that says women's Like when the letters come and there
• 38:32
Speaker 4: are thousands of them are.
• 38:33
Speaker 5: Going to come. Deer Scrubs used to be a huge fan.
• 38:36
Speaker 4: But that hospital exterior said women's on it. You can
• 38:39
Speaker 4: send all those letters to me, I'll take all the mail.
• 38:41
Speaker 4: And it was such an arrogant, dicky thing to say,
• 38:44
Speaker 4: but I just never got caught up.
• 38:45
Speaker 2: No, but it's true because if they're looking at stuff
• 38:47
Speaker 2: like that, they're not really watching the show, you know
• 38:48
  Speaker 2: what I mean.
• 38:49
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 38:49
Speaker 1: Bill would always said that when when we were like,
• 38:51
Speaker 1: when we were all holding up for something like you're
• 38:54
Speaker 1: in the wrong you're wearing the wrong watch, Bill would
• 38:56
Speaker 1: be like, guys, I'll take all the mail on the
• 38:59
  Speaker 1: wrong Watch's.
• 39:02
Speaker 4: That? And then the neatest thing that you could say
• 39:04
Speaker 4: is to say it to John Inwood all the time
• 39:05
Speaker 4: was he would make you, guys wait while he went
• 39:07
Speaker 4: and fixed a light, you know, way in the background,
• 39:10
Speaker 4: to take you ten minutes.
• 39:11
Speaker 5: And when he finally got back to camera, I was.
• 39:13
  Speaker 4: Go, Showsaver, sure.
• 39:18
Speaker 5: You know we were in real.
• 39:19
Speaker 4: Trouble and you fixed it with that light that's one
• 39:21
  Speaker 4: hundred yards.
• 39:22
  Speaker 5: In the background.
• 39:23
Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, the man was passionate. He wanted to get
• 39:25
Speaker 1: it just perfect, Zach.
• 39:26
Speaker 4: That was also the episode was also not only your
• 39:29
Speaker 4: first muppet exit. I wish I had a wider frame,
• 39:32
Speaker 4: but the first time that when you got up from
• 39:33
Speaker 4: following that you shook out your shoulders.
• 39:35
Speaker 1: Oh really, I'm frozen in a frame. Here at two
• 39:40
Speaker 1: minutes of me in a threesome fantasy with Sarah Chaw
• 39:44
Speaker 1: and another beautiful model and we're all sweaty, And the
• 39:46
Speaker 1: first thing that came in my head was, could you
• 39:48
Speaker 1: even do that today on a half hour single camera
• 39:52
  Speaker 1: network comedy.
• 39:53
Speaker 4: Not that cause it was pretty uh suggestive and graphic risque.
• 39:58
Speaker 2: Sure, that was so awesome, by the way, like holy count.
• 40:03
Speaker 1: My job right right.
• 40:04
Speaker 2: Well, first of all, it was so awesome because that's
• 40:07
Speaker 2: everybody's fantasy to get married and for your wife to
• 40:10
Speaker 2: be like, yeah, we could do this, it's going.
• 40:14
Speaker 4: To be It's also one of it's one of the
• 40:15
Speaker 4: best outtakes ever. Do you remember that one outtake where
• 40:17
Speaker 4: Zach was like, yeah, keep kissing when the don't stop.
• 40:20
  Speaker 5: You remember that.
• 40:21
Speaker 1: I remember something being like I was like, I know,
• 40:23
Speaker 1: I think I was like keep rolling.
• 40:26
Speaker 4: Yeah. Look, I've had this discussion a lot. There's tons
• 40:30
Speaker 4: of things on our show you couldn't do now, correctly
• 40:34
Speaker 4: or incorrectly, Like the Todd is an interesting one, oh
• 40:37
Speaker 4: you know, And we used to say, like the Todd
• 40:41
Speaker 4: started in a way.
• 40:42
Speaker 5: I don't know if you remember.
• 40:43
Speaker 4: It was always in a banana hammock because I said,
• 40:46
Speaker 4: if we're gonna do a young man's fantasies and see
• 40:49
Speaker 4: women's scantily clad. I think we have to see as much,
• 40:54
Speaker 4: if not more, ridiculous male nudity, and so Todd would
• 40:57
Speaker 4: just always be in a banana hammick end he was
• 41:00
Speaker 4: representative of somebody intentionally so crass, are so ludicrous that
• 41:06
Speaker 4: he's to be laughed at and not with. But unfortunately
• 41:10
Speaker 4: I think he was laughed with a lot. Uh So
• 41:13
Speaker 4: I don't know if you could do him now. The
• 41:14
Speaker 4: one things I always get busted on or two storylines.
• 41:18
Speaker 4: One is when the janitor turned JD into a racist,
• 41:21
Speaker 4: and one is when I put Donald's picture on the
• 41:25
Speaker 4: cover of his college magazine twice. Do you remember when
• 41:29
Speaker 4: I said, like, your college was so happy to have
• 41:33
Speaker 4: an accomplished, great black guy that you know in their
• 41:36
Speaker 4: lily white school that on their brochure, your your pictures
• 41:40
Speaker 4: there twice. Yeah, they photoshopped you in twice just to
• 41:45
Speaker 4: look like a PC college. You know.
• 41:47
Speaker 2: Well, I noticed that. I noticed that There are a
• 41:49
Speaker 2: lot of things and this is just how how time
• 41:51
Speaker 2: has gone. First, of all the shows about sexual harassment,
• 41:54
Speaker 2: which is very uh being too dominant right now, one
• 42:00
Speaker 2: of Hollywood's biggest movie makers is now in jail for
• 42:05
Speaker 2: doing horrible horrible, horrible things, right, but we're touching things
• 42:09
Speaker 2: like that that are kind of untouched, Like you can't
• 42:11
Speaker 2: touch these things now, these things that we were doing
• 42:14
Speaker 2: in the show back in the day, some of these things,
• 42:16
Speaker 2: networks will be like no, no, no, no, no no, let's
• 42:18
Speaker 2: stay away from that, Let's stay away.
• 42:19
Speaker 4: Oh, they'd be so careful.
• 42:21
Speaker 1: I think, as Bill said, for some for better, we've
• 42:24
Speaker 1: evolved and we probably wouldn't make some of those jokes today,
• 42:26
Speaker 1: and in some I wonder if, in this example, with
• 42:29
Speaker 1: the sort of sexual sweaty threesome fantasy, I'm just surprised
• 42:33
Speaker 1: Bill that you got it. I mean, I knew you
• 42:35
Speaker 1: wanted to push the envelope of what the show could be.
• 42:37
Speaker 1: I'm just I just wondered, like, even now in twenty twenty,
• 42:41
Speaker 1: if in a primetime network comedy, if you could do
• 42:44
Speaker 1: a sweaty sex threesome joke.
• 42:47
  Speaker 3: No.
• 42:47
Speaker 4: Look, I want to answer two things. Because what Donald
• 42:50
Speaker 4: was saying, you know, is interesting. We talked about it
• 42:53
Speaker 4: a lot because I don't know if you remember in
• 42:55
Speaker 4: this episode the resolve is that would have been a
• 43:00
Speaker 4: completely different story if doctor Cox or younger male was
• 43:06
Speaker 4: calling Sarah sweetheart and the boys sport, but we were
• 43:10
Speaker 4: kind of anticipating something.
• 43:12
Speaker 5: We talked about it.
• 43:13
Speaker 4: Kelso was of a different generation. He was older than
• 43:15
Speaker 4: all you guys. He called you is definitely an old
• 43:19
Speaker 4: school dude. You can never say these things are innocuous.
• 43:22
Speaker 4: But it was a time in which at the end
• 43:25
Speaker 4: John c McGinley talks to Sarah and goes, if you're
• 43:29
Speaker 4: going to get mad about some quasi term of endearment,
• 43:34
Speaker 4: you know from an old out of touch dude, you
• 43:37
Speaker 4: know your life here is going to be a lot
• 43:40
Speaker 4: more complicated than it has to be. And she took
• 43:42
Speaker 4: the lesson of picking my battles, you know. So to
• 43:45
  Speaker 4: Donald's answer, I think it's a story you can maybe
• 43:49
Speaker 4: still do if you're talking. Although we've now moved twenty
• 43:52
Speaker 4: years away from that. At that time we were going like, hey,
• 43:54
Speaker 4: here's a guy in his mid to late sixties.
• 43:56
Speaker 5: You know that is without a doubt, of a generation.
• 44:00
Speaker 4: I got so much trouble when he Kelso said to
• 44:03
Speaker 4: a male nurse, you know, oh, you're wondering why you
• 44:06
  Speaker 4: don't get respected, It's because you're doing a woman's job.
• 44:08
Speaker 4: And our intent was that Kelso is so out of
• 44:12
Speaker 4: touch that he would say that, you know what I mean.
• 44:14
Speaker 4: And then the complaints I got from Nurses Association, got
• 44:19
Speaker 4: letters and stuff, true, were how could you have a
• 44:21
Speaker 4: character saying that when it's such a problem that characters
• 44:25
Speaker 4: that people out there, especially from that generation, believe that
• 44:29
  Speaker 4: and say that.
• 44:29
  Speaker 5: I'm like, right, it's real.
• 44:31
Speaker 4: He's the bad guy on the show.
• 44:32
Speaker 1: And there's a nursing shortage, so like, don't discourage people.
• 44:35
Speaker 4: Yeah, he's the bad guy on the show. He has
• 44:37
Speaker 4: those thoughts, and in a good way. I think Kelso
• 44:39
Speaker 4: evolved and into Zach's question. It comes all under the
• 44:45
Speaker 4: heading and it's not just with those two girls, which
• 44:48
Speaker 4: was a joke and obviously a joke about some you know,
• 44:51
Speaker 4: young male fantasy, but this is for both of you,
• 44:54
Speaker 4: and for Sarah and for Judy.
• 44:56
Speaker 5: When I said the show has to.
• 44:57
Speaker 4: Be real, beyond the goofiness, what we thought about more
• 45:01
Speaker 4: than jokes was about when we would have sex scenes,
• 45:04
Speaker 4: you know, and it was really important to me, not
• 45:07
Speaker 4: no ascibious way that they seemed. They didn't seem like
• 45:11
Speaker 4: a TV sitcom kiss where everybody goes and some of
• 45:15
Speaker 4: the romance scenes between Zach and Sarah and Donald and
• 45:19
Speaker 4: Judy and even Johnny C and my wife, which still
• 45:22
Speaker 4: turns my stomach a little bit because I had to
• 45:24
  Speaker 4: see it.
• 45:24
Speaker 2: You did, you did?
• 45:27
Speaker 1: I had to kiss Christa so early and I was
• 45:30
Speaker 1: still in the terrified of Bill phase, and it was
• 45:34
Speaker 1: an early episode I don't know what, probably five or something,
• 45:37
Speaker 1: and I had to make out with Christa and I
• 45:40
Speaker 1: remember being like, this is the craziest job. I'm about
• 45:42
Speaker 1: to make out with my boss's wife for him.
• 45:47
Speaker 4: I still have that on a loop at my house.
• 45:48
Speaker 4: It's awesome hard soon No, Yeah, I mean he's super sexy.
• 45:53
  Speaker 5: I'm really grateful.
• 45:54
Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, it is did you did?
• 46:00
Speaker 4: You guys think you were doing fairly racy sex scenes.
• 46:03
  Speaker 2: The time.
• 46:06
Speaker 1: Throughout the whole show. I mean, I can't that big
• 46:09
Speaker 1: famous one that Sarah I did with the pizza. I
• 46:11
Speaker 1: remember that being like, I can't believe they're gonna put
• 46:14
Speaker 1: put this on TV. This is gonna be censored. And
• 46:16
Speaker 1: all my stuff with Amy Smart, I remember being like,
• 46:18
Speaker 1: they're gonna air this.
• 46:21
Speaker 2: I was really excited about and not in that way,
• 46:24
Speaker 2: but like when Judy and I would do scenes together,
• 46:27
Speaker 2: I was it really felt like we were a couple
• 46:31
Speaker 2: when watched when I watched it, you know what I mean,
• 46:33
Speaker 2: because that's how I don't know that there was just
• 46:36
Speaker 2: something that was really uh uh uh. She and I
• 46:41
Speaker 2: had great chemistry, I feel like, and because of that,
• 46:44
Speaker 2: and because of that, I uh you know when I
• 46:46
Speaker 2: watched her stuff. That's that's what everybody hopes for when
• 46:50
Speaker 2: they do romantic stuff, that the audience believes it. And
• 46:53
Speaker 2: if the audience doesn't believe it, well hopefully I believe it,
• 46:56
Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
• 46:57
Speaker 5: And much I liked you guys.
• 46:59
Speaker 4: I like you guys. There's no offense because I love
• 47:02
Speaker 4: Zach and Sarah. But my favorite couple on the show,
• 47:04
Speaker 4: Donald and Judy because as a writer's room in a
• 47:08
Speaker 4: glassman the writer's room. One of the things we put
• 47:11
Speaker 4: on those boards in the first couple of weeks was
• 47:14
Speaker 4: we're gonna get Turk and Carla together and never break
• 47:18
Speaker 4: them up and never threaten them. And you know, because
• 47:20
Speaker 4: we're gonna do will there won't they with the other
• 47:22
Speaker 4: characters and how cool is it to see a couple
• 47:24
Speaker 4: that finds each other and works right? And the only
• 47:28
Speaker 4: reason we ever even had you guys have a little
• 47:31
Speaker 4: dip here there as a couple was because we never
• 47:33
Speaker 4: expected the show to last nine years, and we had
• 47:36
Speaker 4: to be like, we should probably throw a couple of
• 47:37
Speaker 4: curve balls their way.
• 47:38
Speaker 2: Man, looking back at it now, it's the it's perfect
• 47:44
Speaker 2: as a young man doing you know who's on a
• 47:47
Speaker 2: television show? Like I used to be like, and we're
• 47:50
Speaker 2: gonna have Holly Berry on the show as my love interest,
• 47:52
Speaker 2: and we and those things that never ever happened.
• 47:56
Speaker 1: Were you bummed out? Not not that it was Judy
• 47:58
Speaker 1: because she's a knockout, but were you my love I know,
• 48:00
Speaker 1: but were you like where are all my love interests?
• 48:03
Speaker 2: Yeah? Absolutely, man, But when you look back at the storytelling,
• 48:07
Speaker 2: when you look back at at at the relationship that
• 48:10
Speaker 2: those two have, Like I can't post pictures of my
• 48:12
Speaker 2: wife and I because people are like, that's not Carlo.
• 48:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, I get it. By the way, post pictures of
• 48:19
Speaker 1: me hugging anyone because they're like, why aren't you hugging turk?
• 48:22
  Speaker 4: Right?
• 48:22
Speaker 2: That's that's the other one that comes up. I'll be like,
• 48:25
Speaker 2: here's a lovely picture of me and my family, and
• 48:27
Speaker 2: I'd be like, that's not where's JD? Where's that graph? People?
• 48:30
Speaker 4: People hit me all the time too with how and
• 48:32
Speaker 4: we tried to do it. You and Judy react to
• 48:36
Speaker 4: you know, TV is a world in which a wife
• 48:38
Speaker 4: has her hands on her hips and is frustrated with
• 48:40
Speaker 4: a husband or the husband's like, you know, you're crazy.
• 48:43
Speaker 4: And even when we sent you guys in crazy stories.
• 48:45
Speaker 4: One of my favorite scenes was in a later episode,
• 48:49
Speaker 4: but when you guys find out Judy's pregnant before she does,
• 48:53
Speaker 4: and you're gonna tell her and uh, everybody knows but her,
• 48:59
Speaker 4: And know the cool thing about your characters is that
• 49:04
Speaker 4: you when when it comes to a comedic peak and
• 49:06
Speaker 4: we did this a lot, you admit fault and then she,
• 49:11
Speaker 4: instead of punishing you for it, says, who gives a ship?
• 49:14
Speaker 5: We're having a baby, you know what I mean. And
• 49:16
Speaker 5: that's not often how real couples work. So it was
• 49:18
Speaker 5: a couple to aspire.
• 49:19
Speaker 2: To, right, I thought, Looking back at it now, I
• 49:22
Speaker 2: love it, like just the even the courtship, even how
• 49:25
Speaker 2: the show starts and how these guys start offs. You
• 49:28
Speaker 2: know they're not together, but if you didn't watch the
• 49:31
Speaker 2: show from the beginning, you would imagine that when the
• 49:34
Speaker 2: show was introduced, these characters started off to you know
• 49:38
Speaker 2: what I mean, Like you watch family Guy and you
• 49:40
Speaker 2: and you say, okay, so Peter's married to and this
• 49:43
Speaker 2: is his family and this is and you accept that
• 49:45
Speaker 2: the whole way through. There's no need for an origin
• 49:47
Speaker 2: story or anything like that. And that's how I feel
• 49:50
Speaker 2: it is with Carla and Turk. There's no need for
• 49:52
Speaker 2: an origin story. They're just a TV couple that works,
• 49:55
Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
• 49:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, I was looking. I was thinking about this because
• 50:00
Speaker 4: is get taking it back to the episode, like the
• 50:03
Speaker 4: way Zach was doing cool things and freezing frames. I
• 50:06
Speaker 4: was trying to remember minutia for you guys, and the
• 50:08
Speaker 4: only the Turk and Carla Manusha I remember was the
• 50:11
Speaker 4: scene in which you two are going to hang out
• 50:14
Speaker 4: and watch Fletch and then Donald leaves. It was very
• 50:19
Speaker 4: subtle we had. It's one of those discussions you have
• 50:22
Speaker 4: in the writer's room. It's like Donald's liked to watch
• 50:24
Speaker 4: Fletch and Carla says, do you want to go hang
• 50:27
Speaker 4: out in your room? We don't want just Carla to
• 50:30
Speaker 4: go do you want to go? Fuck? Because that makes
• 50:33
Speaker 4: her seem like a bimbo.
• 50:34
Speaker 5: And we don't want.
• 50:35
Speaker 4: Turk to just you know, be like I'll drop JD
• 50:39
Speaker 4: in an instant. So like the dumb things you argue
• 50:42
Speaker 4: about in writer's room, you won't even notice unless you
• 50:44
Speaker 4: watch it again. Did you see that Carlo was holding
• 50:46
Speaker 4: two beers? So like when she goes to you go
• 50:49
Speaker 4: look at that gainst she goes, you're watching Fletch. You
• 50:51
Speaker 4: know it's funny when we do all the lines. She goes, hey,
• 50:53
Speaker 4: you want to go hang out in your room? And
• 50:55
Speaker 4: she's got so it's not the women in the writing staff.
• 50:58
Speaker 4: I right wanted to make it. Oh, we're not just
• 51:00
Speaker 4: going to go fuck. I mean we will eventually, but
• 51:01
Speaker 4: she's got two beers. So it's like, do you want
• 51:03
Speaker 4: to go out your room, we both have a beer,
• 51:05
Speaker 4: we'll shoot the ship and then we'll hook up. And
• 51:07
Speaker 4: that fine line I think people is me being a nerd.
• 51:10
Speaker 4: I think people, even if they don't notice that it's
• 51:12
Speaker 4: subtext that they if you do a ton of it,
• 51:15
Speaker 4: they gradually notice that it's more than just physical. Right,
• 51:19
Speaker 4: that scene also, Zach had and you can and I'll hand.
• 51:22
Speaker 5: It back to you, but you had.
• 51:24
Speaker 4: One of our other first arguments was we constantly fought
• 51:28
Speaker 4: in the writer's room. I made huge mistakes as we
• 51:30
Speaker 4: went along about things that should be a fantasy and shouldn't.
• 51:34
Speaker 4: And this was one of the first arguments because when
• 51:38
Speaker 4: Carlos's do you want to go.
• 51:39
Speaker 5: Hang out in my room? We look to you and
• 51:41
  Speaker 5: when we.
• 51:41
Speaker 4: Look back, the remote control is still hovering in the air. Yeah,
• 51:44
Speaker 4: and it drops at It's very bugs bunny. And it
• 51:47
Speaker 4: was not done as a fantasy, you know what I mean?
• 51:49
Speaker 1: And you already did you always this early have the
• 51:51
Speaker 1: sort of white flash to a fantasy always, I forget.
• 51:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, we were, we were making the rules still, but
• 51:57
Speaker 4: we hadn't done the sound effects because we were just
• 52:01
Speaker 4: starting to obsess about the difference between fantasies and flashbacks.
• 52:04
Speaker 1: Well, you know, one of the funniest things I think
• 52:06
Speaker 1: in throughout nine years of Scrubs is that Bill was
• 52:10
Speaker 1: always dancing around what is so broad that's that it's
• 52:15
Speaker 1: a fantasy, or what could exist in this world? And
• 52:17
Speaker 1: there's a There's two that come to mind as my
• 52:19
Speaker 1: favorites that he put in the real world, but we're
• 52:22
Speaker 1: probably supposed to be fantasies. One one is when when
• 52:26
Speaker 1: Donald packs me into the bag, it was literally it
• 52:31
Speaker 1: was literally the size of a fucking bowling bag. It
• 52:36
Speaker 1: was a backpack, and I was like, and if you
• 52:39
Speaker 1: remember my like arm and leg were sticking up like
• 52:41
Speaker 1: my body would never fake.
• 52:43
Speaker 4: I had a fake foot by your head and then
• 52:46
Speaker 4: so when he scratched your nose, your foot went h.
• 52:49
Speaker 1: That was real and in the real world. And the
• 52:51
Speaker 1: other one is that the janitor builds a full size
• 52:53
Speaker 1: house out of sand in the parking lot, and that
• 52:56
Speaker 1: was in the real world.
• 52:57
  Speaker 2: That all right.
• 52:57
Speaker 4: The sand castle is not my fault because the sand castle,
• 53:02
Speaker 4: the gag, you know, it was written like it was
• 53:04
Speaker 4: real in the script, and we thought it would be
• 53:07
Speaker 4: a sand castle like the size of like you ever
• 53:09
Speaker 4: see a kid's playhouse like outside, something you could actually build,
• 53:14
Speaker 4: right and are when I showed up, I drove, I
• 53:17
Speaker 4: tried to drive to my parking spot that morning, and
• 53:19
Speaker 4: the parking lot was closed. I better gone uh oh
• 53:23
Speaker 4: the corner and there was like a final tap, there
• 53:29
Speaker 4: was a sand castle as big as my home. I'm like, oh, no,
• 53:33
  Speaker 4: well that's and we can't say it's a fantasy, because
• 53:35
Speaker 4: I think he lived there.
• 53:37
Speaker 5: For most of the episode. He kept yelling at people.
• 53:49
Speaker 1: Those are the two that always stuck out of my
• 53:50
Speaker 1: mind as one, and I'm sure as we go through
• 53:52
Speaker 1: the series we'll find other ones. But I remember thinking like,
• 53:55
Speaker 1: oh my god, that one in the bag was in
• 53:57
  Speaker 1: the sand castle.
• 53:59
  Speaker 4: Yeah, they're a mistake.
• 54:00
Speaker 1: So listen to twenty five. We were talking about how
• 54:02
Speaker 1: you phased out In this episode you went nuts with
• 54:06
Speaker 1: sound effects and there's there's literally a horn noise when Johnny.
• 54:10
  Speaker 4: For fucking.
• 54:12
Speaker 5: When you and Jad eventually.
• 54:14
Speaker 1: Do Yeah, I mean this episode is this This might
• 54:19
Speaker 1: have been your peak sound effects moment as you're figuring out.
• 54:21
Speaker 2: Oh no, there's another one coming. I know there's another
• 54:23
  Speaker 2: one coming.
• 54:24
Speaker 1: But this one has this one has the ear flick
• 54:27
Speaker 1: noise and also pretty much like anytime Johnny c moved.
• 54:30
Speaker 4: Just you guys did the trivia question of Jeff's you
• 54:36
Speaker 4: know the Powers that Be And you know it's hard
• 54:38
Speaker 4: to screen rough cuts of single camera shows because they
• 54:41
Speaker 4: wouldn't hear the laughs of all their friends and Will
• 54:43
  Speaker 4: and Grace.
• 54:44
Speaker 5: Is this funny? And I thought it was funny. I
• 54:47
Speaker 5: hated those sound effects so much.
• 54:48
Speaker 4: Did you guys do the trivia question of the one
• 54:50
Speaker 4: sound effect that stayed all nine years?
• 54:52
Speaker 2: It's got to be the wish to go away into fantasy?
• 54:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, no wish to fantasies? Though, is not a sign
• 54:59
Speaker 4: effect with an actor. There's an actor.
• 55:01
Speaker 1: Oh oh, Todd high five?
• 55:02
Speaker 4: Whoops, there you go, Todd's high five being amplified times
• 55:06
  Speaker 4: nine thousand.
• 55:07
  Speaker 5: I think it's I think that's the.
• 55:08
Speaker 4: Sound of like a rubber matt being slapped on the ground,
• 55:13
Speaker 4: you know, And we kept that one forever.
• 55:15
Speaker 1: That's funny. They really hurt, by the way. I mean, John,
• 55:20
Speaker 1: I'm not being a whimp. They genuinely hurt.
• 55:22
Speaker 2: No one's calling you a wimp. But come on, he.
• 55:25
Speaker 4: Still passes out five's, you know on the line to people.
• 55:27
Speaker 1: I know you can. You can go on Cameo. By
• 55:29
Speaker 1: the way, We'll give Rob a shout out. You can
• 55:31
Speaker 1: go on Cameo and Rob Maschio will send you a
• 55:34
Speaker 1: message and high five you virtually, and go hire Rob
• 55:38
Speaker 1: to give your friends a virtual high five on came
• 55:43
Speaker 1: I kind of want to get one for Donald.
• 55:46
Speaker 2: I'll accept and receive it, thank you very much.
• 55:48
Speaker 1: Three twenty six, The janitor says one of my favorite
• 55:51
Speaker 1: lines of the first season. You see him unhappy. I
• 55:54
  Speaker 1: like that.
• 55:58
Speaker 5: I had forgotten that he locked you outside.
• 56:00
Speaker 1: And was talking about Neil for his second bill because
• 56:02
Speaker 1: we told we shared with the with the listeners the
• 56:05
Speaker 1: story about how you know he wasn't intended to be
• 56:08
Speaker 1: in your mind as big a role as he was,
• 56:10
Speaker 1: or and then and of course everyone always discusses that
• 56:13
Speaker 1: he may have been a figment of my imagination if
• 56:15
Speaker 1: if the show only went one season, But just talk
• 56:17
Speaker 1: about Neil and how you kept expanding his part because
• 56:20
Speaker 1: he was just so friggin funny.
• 56:22
Speaker 2: I have a question, did he have to audition? Also,
• 56:24
Speaker 2: that's the other question. He did not happen.
• 56:26
Speaker 4: Here's what here's here's what happened is Neil does the
• 56:28
Speaker 4: stand up bit when he's interviewed, because he's a really
• 56:32
Speaker 4: good actor. I don't know if you guys have ever
• 56:33
Speaker 4: seen him any of his dramatic stuff. In the middle,
• 56:35
Speaker 4: he was so and he's so good. Yeah, and he
• 56:38
Speaker 4: came in and read for John mcf doctor Cox and
• 56:43
Speaker 4: he was really good. But literally there, because we were
• 56:45
Speaker 4: old buddies, I'm like, you're going to be the janitor
• 56:47
Speaker 4: and uh. And so when he talks about it, he's like,
• 56:50
Speaker 4: so I really prepared and I came in and then
• 56:53
Speaker 4: Bill's not gonna be the janet. And when Neil does
• 56:55
Speaker 4: the bit, Neil's like, well, I still carry around like
• 56:58
Speaker 4: a clipboard and a step mop, carry around a mop.
• 57:03
Speaker 5: Well I get to wear one of those cool lab jumpsuit.
• 57:06
  Speaker 5: Gray jumpsuit.
• 57:08
Speaker 1: Oh, he would get so mad. Neil would that it
• 57:10
Speaker 1: wasn't a jumpsuit. He goes, it's a gray shirt and pants.
• 57:14
  Speaker 1: It's not a jumpsuit.
• 57:18
Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I always thought that his character was like
• 57:21
Speaker 2: the worst janitor in the world, But when you watch
• 57:23
Speaker 2: the show, he's always working and he's always doing his job.
• 57:26
Speaker 2: He was never lazy, you know what I mean.
• 57:28
Speaker 5: He was drunk most of the time.
• 57:31
Speaker 4: That was one of my favorite lines ever's have you
• 57:33
  Speaker 4: been drinking?
• 57:33
Speaker 5: I'm not drunk? Na, So look JD, the real JD told.
• 57:41
Speaker 4: Me often when he was talking about it, there would
• 57:43
Speaker 4: always be somebody, as there is any group dynamic when
• 57:47
Speaker 4: he was a resident, would just plague him. You know,
• 57:49
Speaker 4: it wasn't always a janitor whatever. So I wanted to
• 57:51
Speaker 4: come up with that character for you, and I thought
• 57:54
Speaker 4: it would be a line here or there. But Neil
• 57:56
Speaker 4: was so funny man and such a gift just to
• 58:00
Speaker 4: have around. And he's you know me, whenever I take
• 58:03
Speaker 4: someone's funny in their buddy, I put him or hurry
• 58:05
Speaker 4: in as much as I possibly can, so he became
• 58:08
Speaker 4: more and more of a character in ways I never thought.
• 58:12
Speaker 4: And part of the joy for me of going back
• 58:14
Speaker 4: and look at these episodes not only seeing moments like
• 58:17
Speaker 4: that Zach that I know Neil made up. You know,
• 58:21
Speaker 4: like even in this episode, you're screaming and the line
• 58:24
Speaker 4: in the script is la la la, I can't hear you.
• 58:26
Speaker 4: But then I kept it in because like, that's one
• 58:28
Speaker 4: of the first times that I looked into editing.
• 58:29
Speaker 5: And then there was Neil going, what you love who?
• 58:32
Speaker 5: You know what I mean? They just playing around with you,
• 58:35
Speaker 5: you know what I mean?
• 58:36
Speaker 1: I remember the scenes with Neil would always be so
• 58:37
Speaker 1: fun because you know, we'd all riffer around, but Neil
• 58:40
Speaker 1: was the best at it, and and you just never
• 58:43
Speaker 1: knew what he was going to say. And I just
• 58:45
Speaker 1: remember I always knew I was gonna laugh extra hard
• 58:48
Speaker 1: because he would just come up with the craziest shit ever.
• 58:53
Speaker 4: I was randomly down the wormhole of getting ready to
• 58:55
Speaker 4: talk to you. To you guy, by the way, the
• 58:57
Speaker 4: end of my other sentence was one of the gifts
• 58:59
Speaker 4: for me as I to show go on and evolved,
• 59:01
Speaker 4: some stuff got worse as a writer, you know, like
• 59:04
Speaker 4: when you say I torture myself when I got too
• 59:06
Speaker 4: broad and stuff like that. But then some stuff got better,
• 59:09
Speaker 4: characters got richer, and last night, randomly, I was watching
• 59:12
Speaker 4: Neil interact with Donald, you know, I mean, I don't
• 59:14
Speaker 4: know if you remember when he had a sock puppet.
• 59:16
Speaker 4: He's like, he pretended to hit you with the days
• 59:20
Speaker 4: and your dynamic with him was so funny as well.
• 59:24
Speaker 4: You know, it was cool to see him start to
• 59:27
Speaker 4: interact with other characters. But the wormhole I ended up
• 59:31
Speaker 4: putting last night and everybody should go look for it.
• 59:34
Speaker 4: There's a scene with Sam Lloyd who plays Ted, and
• 59:37
Speaker 4: Zach and Neil and you guys are trying to help
• 59:40
Speaker 4: Neil with a girlfriend. You know, he's trying to the
• 59:43
Speaker 4: girl that played the ukulele Kate mccoucheoch. You're trying to
• 59:48
Speaker 4: get him to go for it with her. And I
• 59:51
Speaker 4: told Neil, I'm like, you got to make up something
• 59:53
Speaker 4: of what you did with your girlfriend. And Neil, Zach,
• 59:56
Speaker 4: we used your real reactions. He made up a monologue
• 59:59
Speaker 4: about killing a dust for her. It's not in the script,
• 1:00:02
Speaker 4: and I watched it last night. He goes, he starts
• 1:00:05
Speaker 4: and he goes, he goes, look, you should give her
• 1:00:07
Speaker 4: a present, like something personal, something you made. Like when
• 1:00:11
Speaker 4: I first started dating lady, I gave her a duck
• 1:00:14
Speaker 4: that I killed already already a weird premise, right, And
• 1:00:18
Speaker 4: then he said, I know what you're asking. Wouldn't it
• 1:00:20
Speaker 4: have been more personal to kill her in front of her?
• 1:00:23
Speaker 4: And yes, it would have, which is also made up.
• 1:00:26
Speaker 4: And then he goes, but the duck and I were
• 1:00:28
Speaker 4: driving over and and he goes, he goes, maybe I
• 1:00:33
Speaker 4: was having a bad day, maybe he was.
• 1:00:35
  Speaker 5: I don't know.
• 1:00:35
Speaker 4: But next thing you know, we're pulled over on the
• 1:00:38
Speaker 4: side of the road, shirts off, which meant.
• 1:00:40
Speaker 5: The duck was wearing your shirt.
• 1:00:42
Speaker 4: He goes, next thing you know, we're pulled over on
• 1:00:45
Speaker 4: the side of the road, shirts off, you know, seeing
• 1:00:47
Speaker 4: what's what? So Neil described a scene that he beat
• 1:00:50
Speaker 4: a duck to down on the side of the freeway. Yes,
• 1:00:56
Speaker 4: and I'm like, that's why that guy's in the show
• 1:00:58
  Speaker 4: so much.
• 1:00:59
  Speaker 5: Man.
• 1:00:59
Speaker 4: I said, hey, come up with something that you did
• 1:01:01
Speaker 4: for your girlfriend, And he's like, what he's probably looking
• 1:01:04
Speaker 4: for is that I beat a duck to death for
• 1:01:08
Speaker 4: her and then brought it over so she could cook it.
• 1:01:11
Speaker 1: He would also just come up with the craziest ship
• 1:01:14
Speaker 1: and to the point where in later episodes, in later
• 1:01:17
Speaker 1: seasons Bill sometimes it would just say in the script,
• 1:01:20
Speaker 1: it just and then Neil makes up something.
• 1:01:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, Neil, please say something funny. It's late one script.
• 1:01:25
Speaker 1: I guess it was late night in the writer's room, Bill,
• 1:01:27
Speaker 1: and you're like, we're not gonna do that. Just put
• 1:01:29
Speaker 1: Neil says something funny.
• 1:01:31
Speaker 4: Yeah, dude, I wrote that in the script. At the
• 1:01:33
Speaker 4: first time, I'm like, Neil, it's two in the morning,
• 1:01:35
Speaker 4: just say something funny. And the next day he did.
• 1:01:39
Speaker 4: You know, I liked it the most when I got
• 1:01:41
Speaker 4: to see him with you guys or with Sarah actually
• 1:01:44
Speaker 4: having a real moment, you know, because it was so
• 1:01:46
Speaker 4: cool that he could actually deliver. You know.
• 1:01:49
Speaker 2: That's the interesting thing as we you know, as a
• 1:01:51
Speaker 2: show goes on, you start to see people's first one
• 1:01:55
Speaker 2: on one scenes together. And so in this episode, John
• 1:01:59
Speaker 2: c McGinley and Sarah have their first real one on
• 1:02:03
Speaker 2: one scene where she's asking him for advice. And at
• 1:02:07
Speaker 2: this point, we as an audios, as an audience member,
• 1:02:12
Speaker 2: we think that JD and John c McGinley are the
• 1:02:14
Speaker 2: only ones that you know, that's the only dad son relationship,
• 1:02:18
Speaker 2: but he was actually a dad to all of us
• 1:02:20
Speaker 2: in this show as far as you know what I mean.
• 1:02:22
Speaker 2: And this was the first episode where we see Sarah
• 1:02:25
Speaker 2: and him, uh and and actually him mess with Sarah
• 1:02:28
Speaker 2: in a way that could have gotten her fired, you
• 1:02:33
  Speaker 2: know what I mean. I just thought that's I thought
• 1:02:35
Speaker 2: that was very interesting because eventually you have to introduce everybody,
• 1:02:37
Speaker 2: even though it took you know, a whole season for
• 1:02:40
Speaker 2: everybody to meet the janitor, for the janitor to do
• 1:02:43
Speaker 2: other scenes with, for Neil to do other scenes with
• 1:02:46
Speaker 2: everyone other than Zach. It was just it's just interesting
• 1:02:49
Speaker 2: because when the show starts off, it seems like the
• 1:02:51
Speaker 2: bubble is so small, you know what I mean. And
• 1:02:54
Speaker 2: it starts with j D's relationship with everybody, but then
• 1:02:58
Speaker 2: as it goes on, the bubble just kept getting bigger
• 1:03:00
Speaker 2: and bigger and bigger. It's a great metaphor, and by
• 1:03:02
Speaker 2: the end of it, we're all in the same universe together.
• 1:03:05
Speaker 2: And this is also the first episode where the hospital
• 1:03:08
Speaker 2: gets really wacky all of a sudden, you know what
• 1:03:10
Speaker 2: I mean, Like we weren't whacky before that. Before this,
• 1:03:13
Speaker 2: we were you know, even though it's episode three, we started.
• 1:03:16
Speaker 2: This is where we're starting to do things that later
• 1:03:18
Speaker 2: on I think, you know, I love it when you
• 1:03:23
Speaker 2: jump from episode one or two and you jump all
• 1:03:26
Speaker 2: the way to episode you know, season three, episode five,
• 1:03:29
Speaker 2: because the growth of the show is so different, you
• 1:03:31
Speaker 2: know what I mean.
• 1:03:32
Speaker 4: I think about it in terms of characters, Like, what's
• 1:03:35
Speaker 4: one of the things that's hard for me to watch
• 1:03:38
Speaker 4: about the early episodes is Ken Jenkins is such a
• 1:03:42
Speaker 4: good actor, and he was the bad guy on this show,
• 1:03:46
Speaker 4: and I had not yet realized how deliciously silly and
• 1:03:51
Speaker 4: funny that guy could be. You know, that guy is
• 1:03:53
Speaker 4: a comedy assassin. But he was so good at being
• 1:03:58
Speaker 4: a guy that you just hated, you know what I mean,
• 1:04:00
Speaker 4: And and we leaned into that, and he didn't have
• 1:04:02
Speaker 4: any other levels. So it's so cool when he expands,
• 1:04:05
Speaker 4: you know what I mean, to see that you know
• 1:04:07
Speaker 4: that he's silly and funny, that Johnny c can be
• 1:04:10
Speaker 4: kind here or there, that Donald and the janitor can
• 1:04:14
Speaker 4: go back and forth at each other but be on
• 1:04:15
Speaker 4: different playing fields because Donald's not threatened. I mean, it's
• 1:04:19
Speaker 4: it's weird to see you guys all at the beginning
• 1:04:21
Speaker 4: because I did like the rich characters that you all
• 1:04:23
  Speaker 4: became very much.
• 1:04:24
Speaker 2: You know, I love it.
• 1:04:33
Speaker 1: Bill. We take a caller here on our show, and
• 1:04:36
Speaker 1: it looks like, by the.
• 1:04:37
Speaker 4: Way, I just thought it was a super villain because
• 1:04:39
Speaker 4: it is us a as a gentleman. That is.
• 1:04:45
Speaker 1: For you guys listening at home. His picture came up
• 1:04:48
Speaker 1: on zoom and he's petting a cat, like like the
• 1:04:50
  Speaker 1: evil genius.
• 1:04:54
Speaker 4: You all are enjoying talking about your show. Well, I
• 1:04:56
  Speaker 4: have bad news.
• 1:04:58
Speaker 1: That's all right, Well, go ahead and introduce him.
• 1:05:01
Speaker 2: Yes, Hi, Mike, thanks so much for joining us.
• 1:05:04
Speaker 4: Hi everyone, how are you?
• 1:05:06
Speaker 1: Can you hear me? Yes?
• 1:05:07
Speaker 2: We can you just fine, Martin.
• 1:05:09
Speaker 6: It's my first ever zoom meeting. I've never done this.
• 1:05:11
  Speaker 6: I'm glad it's working.
• 1:05:12
  Speaker 2: I'm glad you're here.
• 1:05:13
Speaker 1: Well, Mark, you picked a good episode, uh to beyond
• 1:05:17
Speaker 1: because you have the creator of the whole show, Bill Lawrence.
• 1:05:20
Speaker 1: So if you have a question for any of us,
• 1:05:22
  Speaker 1: go ahead.
• 1:05:23
Speaker 4: Oh well, hello Bill Lawrence, and hello all of you.
• 1:05:25
  Speaker 5: That's awesome. I'm so glad.
• 1:05:27
Speaker 1: To be Where do you live, by the way, I
• 1:05:29
  Speaker 1: live in Chicago.
• 1:05:30
Speaker 6: I'm on the northwest side Chicago, up in Avondale, Old
• 1:05:34
  Speaker 6: Irving Park area.
• 1:05:35
Speaker 2: Shotaw, stand up, we.
• 1:05:37
Speaker 4: Were just talking about Neil Flynn.
• 1:05:38
Speaker 5: That's where that's the area of the world that he
• 1:05:39
  Speaker 5: is from.
• 1:05:40
Speaker 2: My friend really Oh, but not your specific area. But
• 1:05:44
Speaker 2: he's from Chicago. No, but he was like downstairs right now,
• 1:05:47
  Speaker 2: right now?
• 1:05:47
Speaker 4: No no, no, no, I mean he could be all right,
• 1:05:49
Speaker 4: go ahead, Mark, all right.
• 1:05:51
Speaker 6: Even from the earliest episodes, Scrubs wasn't afraid to raise
• 1:05:54
Speaker 6: social issues and took a clear stance that I thought
• 1:05:57
Speaker 6: prioritized like well being of people over the economics and
• 1:06:01
Speaker 6: insurance bureaucracy. I felt like this helped a lot of
• 1:06:04
Speaker 6: young people, myself included, start thinking about the human side
• 1:06:07
Speaker 6: of healthcare and healthcare like as a human right for
• 1:06:09
Speaker 6: the first time, and sort of some of those more
• 1:06:11
Speaker 6: serious issues. So I was just wondering if you guys
• 1:06:14
Speaker 6: recalled any specific moments from production episodes or moments on
• 1:06:17
Speaker 6: set that might have changed your influence the way you
• 1:06:20
Speaker 6: guys have you the sort of work done by your characters,
• 1:06:23
Speaker 6: or just sort of the healthcare system as a whole.
• 1:06:26
Speaker 4: Wow, that's Donald and Zach answer this for the show.
• 1:06:30
Speaker 4: I will tell you I've been thinking about this a
• 1:06:33
Speaker 4: lot lately. Mark because the real JD and my pal
• 1:06:38
Speaker 4: we were both kind of screw ups with a lot
• 1:06:40
Speaker 4: with very little direction as young guys. And I remember
• 1:06:43
Speaker 4: asking him what the hell he was doing going back
• 1:06:45
Speaker 4: to pre med, and he talked about wanting to be
• 1:06:48
Speaker 4: of service, you know, and his viewpoint right now.
• 1:06:52
Speaker 5: You know, not to make this two poignant.
• 1:06:55
Speaker 4: I FaceTime with him every night when he gets off
• 1:06:57
Speaker 4: work because he's run of the COVID command centers on
• 1:07:00
Speaker 4: the whole ICU for this hospitals we spoke about, and
• 1:07:02
Speaker 4: it helps him decompress and not take that stuff into
• 1:07:05
Speaker 4: his family. And he as a caregiver cares so much
• 1:07:09
Speaker 4: more about the humanistic side than any of this other bullshit.
• 1:07:14
Speaker 4: And he instilled that upon me, and he said we
• 1:07:16
Speaker 4: could steal all of his stories, but we could never
• 1:07:20
Speaker 4: have a callousness. He said, he was only interested in
• 1:07:23
Speaker 4: me stealing his stories in his life and his name
• 1:07:27
Speaker 4: if The undercurrent of the show was that it was
• 1:07:31
Speaker 4: about a bunch of people flaws and all that cared
• 1:07:34
Speaker 4: most about helping and taking care of other people. So
• 1:07:37
Speaker 4: that was part of the series. And I'll weave the
• 1:07:39
Speaker 4: rest to Donald and Zach. That's cool that you asked
• 1:07:42
Speaker 4: that because I think about him every day. He's out
• 1:07:44
Speaker 4: there doing stuff much.
• 1:07:45
Speaker 1: More important, of course, And and and it's the perfect
• 1:07:48
Speaker 1: question for this era, Mark because these these these medical
• 1:07:52
Speaker 1: professionals and everyone who's working in the industry, whether you're
• 1:07:55
  Speaker 1: a doctor, a nurse, or a janitor, a medic, everyone
• 1:07:59
Speaker 1: who in this environment is as the world is finally
• 1:08:04
Speaker 1: seeing in the spotlight how heroic these people are. And
• 1:08:08
Speaker 1: I think I always felt when we were making the
• 1:08:10
Speaker 1: show that Bill was really shining a light on how
• 1:08:14
Speaker 1: dedicated these folks were and how they had to deal
• 1:08:17
Speaker 1: with life and death every single day. One thing that
• 1:08:19
Speaker 1: really stood out for me when you asked your question
• 1:08:22
Speaker 1: was the I remember learning that the nurses really run
• 1:08:25
Speaker 1: the show. I hadn't spent much time in a hospital
• 1:08:28
Speaker 1: when we started making Scrubs, and I learned that the
• 1:08:33
Speaker 1: doctors can't do it without the nurses, and the nurses
• 1:08:37
Speaker 1: are the ones who are on the front lines, and
• 1:08:40
Speaker 1: the doctors have to be rotating, and they can't do
• 1:08:42
Speaker 1: anything without the help of amazing nurses. It wasn't until
• 1:08:45
Speaker 1: I spent more time in hospitals with both my father
• 1:08:48
Speaker 1: and my sister getting sick, that I really this was
• 1:08:51
Speaker 1: after Scrubs, but I remember being like, wow, this is
• 1:08:53
Speaker 1: everything we were doing is so real. I'm witnessing it
• 1:08:56
Speaker 1: on the front lines that we see that doctor like
• 1:08:58
Speaker 1: every now and then, But man, these nurses and when
• 1:09:01
Speaker 1: we have a good one, it is such a difference,
• 1:09:03
Speaker 1: and me puts a smile on my sick father's face,
• 1:09:06
Speaker 1: and when we have one that's a little bit aloof
• 1:09:08
Speaker 1: it just drives you crazy. And I just really it
• 1:09:12
Speaker 1: really came home to me everything we have been doing
• 1:09:15
Speaker 1: on the show, how crucial and how important the people
• 1:09:18
Speaker 1: on the front lines, particularly in this anecdote I'm telling
• 1:09:21
Speaker 1: the nursing staff of hospitals were to me.
• 1:09:23
Speaker 2: The one thing that really sticks out for me is
• 1:09:25
Speaker 2: to piggyback on what Bill said, is you know, for
• 1:09:30
Speaker 2: some hospitals, if you don't have insurance, you can't get treated.
• 1:09:34
Speaker 2: And the one thing that Scrubs did which I thought
• 1:09:37
Speaker 2: was amazing was we had a bunch of the doctors
• 1:09:40
Speaker 2: on the show were a bunch of rule breakers, benders,
• 1:09:43
Speaker 2: especially when it came to something like that, you know
• 1:09:45
Speaker 2: what I mean. That was always special for me because
• 1:09:49
Speaker 2: you know, a lot of people don't have great insurance,
• 1:09:53
Speaker 2: especially right now a lot of people.
• 1:09:56
Speaker 1: Don't have it and or any insurance at all.
• 1:09:58
Speaker 2: And Test Church at all, thank you, Zach. And Test
• 1:10:01
Speaker 2: costs a lot of money, you know what I mean.
• 1:10:04
Speaker 2: And if there are rule breakers and rule benders out
• 1:10:06
Speaker 2: there that can save lives in that way, I'm all
• 1:10:11
Speaker 2: for that, you know what I mean. And I love
• 1:10:12
Speaker 2: that we had people on the show, like doctor Cox.
• 1:10:15
Speaker 2: When Kelso's trying to get this person out of the hospital,
• 1:10:18
Speaker 2: Cox comes up with so many different ways to get
• 1:10:21
Speaker 2: this guy a bed, and I thought that was just amazing.
• 1:10:24
Speaker 4: Hey, Mark, we obsessed so much about your question. All
• 1:10:28
Speaker 4: in terms of the character doctor Kelso. There's an episode
• 1:10:32
Speaker 4: you guys might remember.
• 1:10:33
Speaker 5: I remember the song.
• 1:10:34
Speaker 4: And the scenes that because the real JD he runs
• 1:10:38
Speaker 4: a hospital now and he's like and you're forced with
• 1:10:40
Speaker 4: having to make these decisions for the greater good. And
• 1:10:42
Speaker 4: there's an episode in which doctor Kelso you know, has
• 1:10:45
Speaker 4: to punt a guy you know, from treatment that they've
• 1:10:50
Speaker 4: done avasurance to have money in an effort to still
• 1:10:52
Speaker 4: build other stuff and to have money to save other people.
• 1:10:56
Speaker 5: And we made this joke about.
• 1:10:58
Speaker 4: How every time doctor Kelson's foot hits the bottom of
• 1:11:01
Speaker 4: the stairs when he leaves the hospital, he starts whistling
• 1:11:04
Speaker 4: as if the day doesn't even affect him.
• 1:11:06
Speaker 5: And at the end of that episode, even he because he.
• 1:11:09
Speaker 4: Knew he was directly responsible for his guy not getting care,
• 1:11:12
Speaker 4: his foot hits and he has a moment you can
• 1:11:14
Speaker 4: see it's really hard for him to start whistling again.
• 1:11:16
Speaker 4: As a citizen Cope song called Sideways playing, and so
• 1:11:21
Speaker 4: we just wanted to make sure that the people weren't
• 1:11:23
Speaker 4: the villains and that the system was So yeah, I'm
• 1:11:25
Speaker 4: really grateful that you noticed that and asked about it.
• 1:11:27
  Speaker 2: Awesome.
• 1:11:28
Speaker 6: Thank you guys for giving such detailed, great responses.
• 1:11:31
Speaker 4: Sure, I think it just speaks to how much you.
• 1:11:33
Speaker 2: Guys feel for the show and put into the show.
• 1:11:36
Speaker 6: It really comes across, and I think that's why I've
• 1:11:37
Speaker 6: been such a big fan for so long.
• 1:11:39
Speaker 1: So thank you, Thank you, Mark, Thanks so much for
• 1:11:41
  Speaker 1: asking your question.
• 1:11:42
Speaker 2: Do you want to ask another question? Oh? Sure, all right,
• 1:11:45
Speaker 2: you get one more?
• 1:11:47
  Speaker 4: All right?
• 1:11:48
Speaker 6: So, this episode, episode three, and the show as a whole,
• 1:11:52
Speaker 6: I think has a lot of moments that exemplify really healthy,
• 1:11:56
Speaker 6: often sensitive male relationships.
• 1:12:00
Speaker 4: Your guys's Turk and JD and JD and doctor.
• 1:12:03
Speaker 6: Cox and other ones, and I was just wondering if
• 1:12:05
Speaker 6: you guys could maybe talk a little bit about what
• 1:12:07
Speaker 6: was important to you guys to have positive sort of
• 1:12:10
Speaker 6: emotional moments between rose.
• 1:12:13
Speaker 4: And how that might have affected your real life.
• 1:12:16
  Speaker 1: I think that's a great question. I'm glad you asked
• 1:12:18
Speaker 1: it with Bill on the show, because for me, I
• 1:12:21
Speaker 1: really felt in a positive way. Granted we joked about
• 1:12:24
Speaker 1: it a lot, but I thought in a positive way
• 1:12:26
Speaker 1: we were showing, you know, when we were growing up.
• 1:12:29
Speaker 1: I mean when Donald, Bill's a smidge and older than us,
• 1:12:31
Speaker 1: but when Donald and I were growing up, you know,
• 1:12:33
Speaker 1: anything you did that was a motive towards the guy
• 1:12:37
Speaker 1: you were called gay and it was derogatory and it
• 1:12:39
Speaker 1: was negative, and it was just an adjective in high
• 1:12:42
Speaker 1: school and junior high, in middle school and everything was
• 1:12:44
Speaker 1: And I always as someone who was it's no surprise
• 1:12:48
Speaker 1: I'm similar in a lot of ways to JD. I
• 1:12:51
Speaker 1: always felt like, but this is who I am. I
• 1:12:54
Speaker 1: am a guy who is a hugger and who's emotional
• 1:12:57
Speaker 1: and where's his hardness sleeve and loves musicals who happens
• 1:12:59
Speaker 1: to be a heterosexual. And I felt like Bill wrote
• 1:13:03
Speaker 1: a character a friendship that was like, well, we're gonna
• 1:13:06
Speaker 1: show that that's okay to men in a way, because
• 1:13:09
Speaker 1: I've noticed it in my life, you know, the fact
• 1:13:12
Speaker 1: that Donald and I would hug and stuff. You know,
• 1:13:14
Speaker 1: I did a Broadway show and Scrubs fans would come
• 1:13:17
Speaker 1: to the to the stage door and they'd be like, JD,
• 1:13:19
Speaker 1: can I have a hug? And I would always kind
• 1:13:21
Speaker 1: of laugh. It was almost like the show was giving
• 1:13:24
Speaker 1: a certain community of men telling them that it was
• 1:13:27
Speaker 1: okay to You're not gonna no matter what your sexuality is,
• 1:13:31
Speaker 1: who cares, It's not gonna be threatened by being like JD,
• 1:13:34
Speaker 1: just being who you truly are. And I always thought
• 1:13:38
Speaker 1: that that was a really positive thing that Bill put
• 1:13:41
  Speaker 1: out there.
• 1:13:42
Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that. I love the fact that the
• 1:13:44
Speaker 2: two of them were so comfortable around each other that
• 1:13:47
Speaker 2: they could be like brothers and lie in the same
• 1:13:49
Speaker 2: bed in their underwear and it not be a thing
• 1:13:53
Speaker 2: for them, you know what I mean. I like that,
• 1:13:56
Speaker 2: And I think that storyline definitely transferred into my real
• 1:14:00
Speaker 2: life with Zach, you know what I mean, Like, I
• 1:14:03
Speaker 2: feel like my comfortability about being around other men and
• 1:14:10
Speaker 2: not being afraid to be who I am and accept
• 1:14:14
Speaker 2: who they are is all because of Scrubs, you know
• 1:14:17
Speaker 2: what I mean. I've played best friends in other projects,
• 1:14:22
Speaker 2: and you know, you play the tough guy, et cetera,
• 1:14:25
Speaker 2: et cetera. But with these guys, none of that stuff mattered.
• 1:14:28
Speaker 2: What mattered was that they loved each other at the
• 1:14:30
Speaker 2: end of the day. And I cherished the fact that
• 1:14:33
Speaker 2: I can have friendships with men and I can say
• 1:14:36
Speaker 2: to them I love you and it not be looked
• 1:14:39
Speaker 2: at as a bad thing.
• 1:14:41
Speaker 4: It's a weird topic for me because you know, JD
• 1:14:45
Speaker 4: was based on real JD. Donald's based on doctor. But
• 1:14:48
Speaker 4: the truth is with these two characters. Anyways, I always
• 1:14:51
Speaker 4: joked around that I was kind of wrestling with both
• 1:14:53
Speaker 4: sides of myself because.
• 1:14:56
Speaker 5: I am I played sports and was the high.
• 1:15:00
Speaker 4: School jockey type guy that I was afraid of this stuff.
• 1:15:04
Speaker 5: And on the other side, I do Zach and I
• 1:15:06
Speaker 5: share a love of Broadway.
• 1:15:07
Speaker 1: Musicals, Robin French, Gobil.
• 1:15:11
  Speaker 4: Ndtude.
• 1:15:14
Speaker 1: All right, whatever, and uh you take the watch. That's
• 1:15:20
Speaker 1: a digression. Well in later episodes, Okay, Uh.
• 1:15:24
Speaker 4: True, I was always wrestling as a young man with
• 1:15:28
Speaker 4: you know which which lane I fit in, and wishing
• 1:15:32
Speaker 4: that it would be easier just to not have to
• 1:15:35
Speaker 4: pick a lane. And then these guys, look, the truth is,
• 1:15:39
Speaker 4: whenever you create a relationship as a writer, it's yours
• 1:15:42
Speaker 4: for a second. And then the actors, if they're great,
• 1:15:45
Speaker 4: they wrestle ownership from you. And what starts out is
• 1:15:49
Speaker 4: eighty twenty years. You know, quickly in this show became
• 1:15:53
Speaker 4: fifty to fifty mine and theirs, and then became all
• 1:15:56
Speaker 4: theirs in a way that I would write moments that
• 1:15:59
Speaker 4: weren't supposed to be romance moments, you know, like whether
• 1:16:03
Speaker 4: it was them wanting to hug each other, you know,
• 1:16:05
Speaker 4: at the end, and then when I look in the dailies,
• 1:16:07
Speaker 4: they're rubbing their faces and heads against.
• 1:16:09
Speaker 1: Me, Like that's my favorite gift. Is my favorite gift,
• 1:16:17
Speaker 1: and use it all the time.
• 1:16:19
  Speaker 2: Whatever.
• 1:16:20
Speaker 1: People are always like you using gifts of yourself. I'm like, yeah,
• 1:16:24
Speaker 1: that one I do.
• 1:16:25
Speaker 2: Because it really looks like we're trying to smell each other, dude,
• 1:16:28
  Speaker 2: really looks like.
• 1:16:29
Speaker 4: By the way I think one of you had lived
• 1:16:30
Speaker 4: in that you smell like an athlete and in a
• 1:16:33
Speaker 4: way that you're just so happy. So my point is
• 1:16:37
Speaker 4: I was doing it as an intellectual exercise, and these
• 1:16:40
Speaker 4: guys made it something more and it's all about their
• 1:16:42
Speaker 4: You get lucky on a TV show when what you're
• 1:16:45
Speaker 4: watching feels even more real because the undercurrent of it
• 1:16:48
Speaker 4: their intense friendship Israel.
• 1:16:51
Speaker 2: You know. I also like that when we meet people nowadays,
• 1:16:55
Speaker 2: they're so eager to talk about their best friend and
• 1:16:58
Speaker 2: how much they love their best friend, you know what
• 1:17:00
Speaker 2: I mean, and that that that makes me feel great.
• 1:17:02
Speaker 2: You know, he's the brown bear to my vanilla bear,
• 1:17:05
Speaker 2: or you know what I mean.
• 1:17:06
Speaker 1: I honestly think it gave us a certain community of
• 1:17:11
Speaker 1: men who watched the show and we're open to it,
• 1:17:13
Speaker 1: a sort of permission to to to be more true
• 1:17:16
Speaker 1: to who they were.
• 1:17:18
Speaker 4: A mark if you want to, if you want to
• 1:17:19
Speaker 4: indulge my version of googling my own name is all
• 1:17:22
Speaker 4: occasionally go looking at all these wedding videos where the
• 1:17:25
Speaker 4: best man sings guy love to the groom.
• 1:17:28
Speaker 5: They're fantastic. There's like a thousand of them out there,
• 1:17:31
Speaker 5: and it always starts with a fake setup.
• 1:17:33
Speaker 4: He's like, you know, I was trying to think of
• 1:17:34
Speaker 4: what to toast and what to blah blah, and I
• 1:17:36
Speaker 4: thought it's probably better to do win song.
• 1:17:38
Speaker 5: There the facts and then the groom.
• 1:17:40
Speaker 4: The groom always stands up with a microphone too, because
• 1:17:43
Speaker 4: they've rehearsed it twenty times. And I'm at home by myself,
• 1:17:46
  Speaker 4: just going.
• 1:17:46
Speaker 2: Like this, lauding. I love it.
• 1:17:50
Speaker 1: All right, Mark, thank you for two awesome questions.
• 1:17:53
Speaker 5: Thanks for having me that great? All right, stay says
• 1:17:56
  Speaker 5: meeting your Mark.
• 1:17:56
Speaker 4: Hey, stay safe, buddy, he can be healthy, Bill.
• 1:18:00
Speaker 1: Why does nurse Roberts have so many bowling shoes for sale?
• 1:18:07
Speaker 4: Look, one of the things that we embraced on Scrubs
• 1:18:10
Speaker 4: early on was surreal jokes just for us, okay, And
• 1:18:15
Speaker 4: we were trying to think, I remember this, and we
• 1:18:17
Speaker 4: wanted this to be a runner, and we dropped it.
• 1:18:19
Speaker 4: We shouldn't have dropped it, but you know, you get
• 1:18:21
Speaker 4: too busy. When you were fantasizing about talking to Turk,
• 1:18:25
Speaker 4: we started going down patho going What he doesn't realize
• 1:18:28
Speaker 4: is he's in a topic with Nurse Roberts and she's
• 1:18:31
Speaker 4: got a side hustle. And we were like, what's her
• 1:18:33
Speaker 4: side hustle? It's selling her dead husband's bowling shoes. But
• 1:18:38
Speaker 4: he didn't even bowl. She's just got like twenty pairs
• 1:18:41
Speaker 4: of bowling shoes. She tries to unload to people.
• 1:18:45
Speaker 1: I thought that was I thought that was so funny,
• 1:18:47
Speaker 1: and I forgot that joke, and then that when Donald
• 1:18:50
Speaker 1: showed up wearing them, I just laughed out loud. I
• 1:18:52
Speaker 1: thought that was so funny, and roberts and then I thought,
• 1:18:56
Speaker 1: I gotta ask Bill just the logic behind it? What
• 1:18:59
Speaker 1: is Nurse rob Why is Nurse Robert's side hustle selling
• 1:19:02
Speaker 1: her husband's bull shoes?
• 1:19:04
Speaker 4: She's just always looking to get a step ahead, man.
• 1:19:06
Speaker 4: The I just love that joke because the same way
• 1:19:10
Speaker 4: I told you that Neil's joke meant that he and
• 1:19:14
Speaker 4: the duck were both wearing shirts, even though that wasn't
• 1:19:17
Speaker 4: said aloud, that joke means that while you were fantasizing.
• 1:19:20
Speaker 5: About turk apropos of nothing, Nurse.
• 1:19:23
Speaker 4: Robert said, Hey, is there any chance you ever to
• 1:19:25
Speaker 4: be interested in buying some used bowling shoes? Is that
• 1:19:30
Speaker 4: something that you would want? Because then you snap out
• 1:19:32
Speaker 4: of it, You're like, I do.
• 1:19:33
Speaker 5: I would really want that.
• 1:19:34
Speaker 1: Ye, when I come out of the when I come
• 1:19:35
Speaker 1: out of the phantasy, she says something like, so the
• 1:19:37
Speaker 1: check's in your locker or something.
• 1:19:40
Speaker 2: No, because I got them in my locker.
• 1:19:42
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you want to write me check.
• 1:19:43
Speaker 2: You want to write me a check because I got
• 1:19:44
Speaker 2: them in my locker.
• 1:19:47
Speaker 1: So I picture her locker is just stacked bullings is
• 1:19:52
Speaker 1: every couple of days she saw someone a pair of
• 1:19:54
  Speaker 1: bowling shoes.
• 1:19:55
Speaker 4: It's just a little side hustle.
• 1:19:56
Speaker 1: Bill touched on this at nineteen thirty seven. There's the
• 1:19:59
Speaker 1: very first thing we did a lot with stunts on
• 1:20:03
Speaker 1: scrubs called the Cowboy Switch. And just if you go
• 1:20:06
Speaker 1: back and watch it, what happens is the camera never cuts,
• 1:20:08
Speaker 1: but I'm running down the hall, and then the camera
• 1:20:11
Speaker 1: without cutting, goes behind a cart, which switches to the stuntman,
• 1:20:16
Speaker 1: who then goes and does a really hard fall on
• 1:20:19
Speaker 1: the ground. The camera can't find me and comes back
• 1:20:21
Speaker 1: and like a magic trick, I've switched back to where
• 1:20:23
Speaker 1: I was. This is a really clever thing that we
• 1:20:26
Speaker 1: used to do a bunch of times on the show.
• 1:20:28
Speaker 1: In order to do a really harder fall that needed
• 1:20:30
Speaker 1: to be a stuntman. And I wonder, Bill, is that
• 1:20:32
Speaker 1: something Adam brought, or something a stuntman brought or you
• 1:20:35
Speaker 1: knew about? How how did those start coming into the show.
• 1:20:38
Speaker 4: Adam pitched very hard the thing we already spoke about
• 1:20:42
Speaker 4: is on this show the camera is a character because
• 1:20:45
Speaker 4: it's almost an extension of JD's head. You know, he's
• 1:20:48
Speaker 4: narrating for this camera that doesn't exist. So that was Adam.
• 1:20:52
Speaker 4: It's why he directed it. I remember him even saying
• 1:20:56
Speaker 4: just so you know, I think he shot one without it,
• 1:20:58
Speaker 4: but he's like, just so you know, when we do
• 1:21:01
Speaker 4: the cowboy switch to buy time, the cameras is going
• 1:21:04
Speaker 4: to look around for jad and I remember going, like
• 1:21:07
Speaker 4: what it's like, it's gonna go like that, it's gonna
• 1:21:09
Speaker 4: try and find it's gonna try and find its owner.
• 1:21:11
Speaker 4: It's like a dog when you disappear, you know what
• 1:21:13
Speaker 4: I mean. And so that was Adam and that dude.
• 1:21:17
Speaker 4: Noon was all about the cowboy switches because he and
• 1:21:21
Speaker 4: Ernie the two stunt men always but it's our favorite
• 1:21:23
Speaker 4: Joke's at Ernie a great stuntman, but it's like, always
• 1:21:27
Speaker 4: be wary of a stuntman who no longer has any
• 1:21:30
Speaker 4: of his own teeth or hair. He had a big set.
• 1:21:32
Speaker 4: He had a big set of a great white teeth
• 1:21:34
Speaker 4: and like, what happened to your real teeth? So yeah,
• 1:21:36
Speaker 4: the end is they said the stunts on this show
• 1:21:40
Speaker 4: you want this stuff to all look real and not silly.
• 1:21:42
Speaker 4: Let's have our thespians and you guys both did some
• 1:21:44
Speaker 4: do them as much as we can, whether it's driving
• 1:21:46
Speaker 4: a scooter into the water or sliding under the cart
• 1:21:50
Speaker 4: or cowboy switches, and it helped sell the reality of
• 1:21:53
  Speaker 4: that clumsiness.
• 1:21:53
Speaker 5: So I thought it was awesome.
• 1:21:54
Speaker 1: And when we get to the Wizard of Oz episode,
• 1:21:56
Speaker 1: there's the most epic cowboy switch that we'll talk about
• 1:21:59
Speaker 1: where the scooter goes in to the puddle, but stay
• 1:22:01
Speaker 1: tuned for that. The friend Zone bill that is one
• 1:22:05
Speaker 1: of the funniest articulations of the friend Zone. I noticed
• 1:22:07
Speaker 1: this time that everything everybody's dressed in beige.
• 1:22:12
Speaker 2: That's my first favorite. That's my first favorite and one
• 1:22:16
Speaker 2: of my all time favorite fantasies ever. And it just
• 1:22:21
Speaker 2: was It's such a smart, smart way to describe the.
• 1:22:24
Speaker 4: First I would have done that fantasy in a world
• 1:22:28
Speaker 4: of streaming where you don't have time limits for ten minutes,
• 1:22:30
Speaker 4: I would have wanted to hear where everybody crossed paths
• 1:22:32
Speaker 4: with her. I loved my favorite was it even Becky
• 1:22:36
Speaker 4: being in there. My favorite was the guy we worked
• 1:22:38
Speaker 4: together at Penguins because in my head, I'm like that guy.
• 1:22:42
Speaker 4: That guy and Elliott barely had shifts together. They just
• 1:22:45
Speaker 4: occasionally overlapped penguins yogurt, and he was just like your shift.
• 1:22:51
Speaker 1: I just love the cleverness of in Elliott's mind. None
• 1:22:55
Speaker 1: of those people stood out so that everybody's dressed in
• 1:22:58
Speaker 1: a shade of beige.
• 1:22:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, they're all blending in. They're all just people that
• 1:23:03
Speaker 4: drifted through her life. You know.
• 1:23:05
Speaker 1: The last thing, I don't know if Donald, do you
• 1:23:07
Speaker 1: have anything else? But the last thing from the show
• 1:23:09
Speaker 1: that I wrote down that I thought was really funny. I
• 1:23:11
Speaker 1: don't know if we ever did it again, is that
• 1:23:12
Speaker 1: you're using Rowdy's mouth to open up the pie.
• 1:23:15
Speaker 2: That was That was the last thing I had to
• 1:23:17
Speaker 2: I was gonna ask you.
• 1:23:18
Speaker 4: I thought Rowdy. I thought Rowdy should have always it
• 1:23:21
Speaker 4: should have always been a bottle opener. But I think
• 1:23:23
Speaker 4: that's the first time we introduced your dead dog without
• 1:23:26
Speaker 4: I don't think we had any lines referencing it.
• 1:23:28
  Speaker 5: Did we?
• 1:23:28
  Speaker 4: No?
• 1:23:29
  Speaker 1: No?
• 1:23:29
  Speaker 2: No?
• 1:23:30
  Speaker 1: Oh?
• 1:23:30
Speaker 5: You mean was he an episode two?
• 1:23:32
Speaker 1: Yeah? He is an episode two.
• 1:23:34
Speaker 2: That's when we introduced him. That's when we.
• 1:23:35
Speaker 4: Introduce Yeah, yeah, okay, I loved you know, Rowdy is
• 1:23:40
Speaker 4: that's I think something more than shockingly, more than anything
• 1:23:43
Speaker 4: that people would go now is a is there a
• 1:23:46
Speaker 4: dead dog that's a character in this show, a real
• 1:23:48
  Speaker 4: stuff dead dog.
• 1:23:49
Speaker 5: That would be a huge issue.
• 1:23:51
Speaker 1: Bill. I don't know if the urban legend is true,
• 1:23:53
Speaker 1: and I really don't want you to correct it if
• 1:23:54
Speaker 1: it's not. But Donald and I were discussing in an
• 1:23:56
Speaker 1: earlier episode of the podcast that when the one the
• 1:24:00
Speaker 1: prop men was let go, he hid Rowdy in the
• 1:24:02
Speaker 1: ceiling tiles of the prop room. That's true, that's true.
• 1:24:06
Speaker 2: That is true. I told you, I told you it's true.
• 1:24:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, we had to let someone go for different reasons,
• 1:24:13
Speaker 4: and he knew that that was a prop that he
• 1:24:15
Speaker 4: had that was a character on the show, so he
• 1:24:17
Speaker 4: tried to get us back by hiding it in the
• 1:24:20
Speaker 4: above the tiles. He locked himself in there and hid
• 1:24:22
Speaker 4: that poor dead dog above the tiles. And by the way,
• 1:24:25
Speaker 4: we found it right away. So when we got an
• 1:24:28
Speaker 4: extra one, we were only getting an extra one in
• 1:24:31
Speaker 4: case something ever happened to the real one. But part
• 1:24:33
Speaker 4: of the lore became that we got an extra dead
• 1:24:35
Speaker 4: dog to you know, replace the one that was lost.
• 1:24:38
Speaker 4: But it's not it's just to generate. It's just in
• 1:24:41
Speaker 4: a weird way. That's what generated that story of what
• 1:24:44
  Speaker 4: would we do?
• 1:24:44
Speaker 1: And then Bill that gave birth to a beautiful, very
• 1:24:48
Speaker 1: moving storyline of introducing Stephen the other I was already
• 1:24:57
Speaker 1: laughing with on a the end.
• 1:24:58
Speaker 2: Did you get Rowdy or did you get Stephen?
• 1:25:00
Speaker 1: I got nothing neither. They're all I told you this story.
• 1:25:02
Speaker 2: I mean, when we break so we don't live together anymore.
• 1:25:05
Speaker 2: At one point, who gets who gets who?
• 1:25:08
Speaker 4: Oh? I forgot who got rowdy and who got Steven?
• 1:25:10
Speaker 1: I don't remember. But Bill, I was laughing with Donald
• 1:25:12
Speaker 1: about how someone can't tell the difference. And I feel
• 1:25:16
Speaker 1: where their old taxidermy balls are, and I go, no,
• 1:25:19
  Speaker 1: that's Steven.
• 1:25:22
Speaker 5: You knew one of them was fixed, so.
• 1:25:27
Speaker 4: Rowdy hit that. I think that's Donald's line to open.
• 1:25:34
  Speaker 1: I don't see. I don't know if today you could
• 1:25:36
Speaker 1: do taxidermy dead dogs humping someone's leg.
• 1:25:39
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know.
• 1:25:40
  Speaker 2: It's a whole.
• 1:25:43
Speaker 4: Everybody not to make this an end line. But this
• 1:25:46
Speaker 4: was such a fun exercise for me because everybody always
• 1:25:50
Speaker 4: asks me what my favorite episode of Scrubs is, and
• 1:25:54
Speaker 4: I don't know how you guys feel. I always say
• 1:25:57
Speaker 4: the pilot because remember reminds me of first meeting you all,
• 1:26:02
Speaker 4: and of the experience and the people so much more
• 1:26:06
Speaker 4: than any specific episodes. When I watch these, like the
• 1:26:08
Speaker 4: first one, two or three episodes, that's what I remember
• 1:26:12
Speaker 4: is seeing you two idiots become friends and having to
• 1:26:16
Speaker 4: deal with the pluses and minuses of that when you
• 1:26:18
Speaker 4: came in crazy hungover to work, but also when I
• 1:26:21
Speaker 4: would see your friendship on screen, you know, and seeing
• 1:26:24
Speaker 4: how people were afraid of Johnny C and how that translated,
• 1:26:27
Speaker 4: and seeing Donald's chemistry with Judy and Zach and Sarah's
• 1:26:32
Speaker 4: puppy dog love for each I mean, it's fantastic.
• 1:26:34
Speaker 5: So that's what this stuff.
• 1:26:35
Speaker 4: Takes me back to, you know, is how cool it
• 1:26:38
Speaker 4: is that not only that you two are still friends,
• 1:26:40
Speaker 4: but that we all still spend time together and talk.
• 1:26:42
  Speaker 2: You Know, I say, I love a lot I've noticed,
• 1:26:45
Speaker 2: but I truly do love that about what we've done together.
• 1:26:49
Speaker 2: You know, we didn't just build a television show together.
• 1:26:52
Speaker 2: You know. It wasn't just you know, you created a show,
• 1:26:55
Speaker 2: we acted and it'd see you later. It's we become
• 1:26:58
Speaker 2: like a family, and when we see each other it's
• 1:27:01
Speaker 2: so amazing. And you know, I don't see everybody as
• 1:27:05
Speaker 2: much as I see the two of you, but it's
• 1:27:07
Speaker 2: always it's always dope, you know what I mean. I enjoy.
• 1:27:11
  Speaker 2: I know I'm gonna laugh. I know i'm gonna you
• 1:27:13
Speaker 2: know what I mean, I know I'm gonna feel good.
• 1:27:15
Speaker 2: It's always great to be around y'all.
• 1:27:18
  Speaker 4: So happy.
• 1:27:18
Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Bill for coming on. And I
• 1:27:20
Speaker 1: hope that you'll do this. I mean, it makes sense
• 1:27:23
Speaker 1: of all people for you to come on a bunch
• 1:27:25
Speaker 1: to this because I hope, I hope you will, because
• 1:27:27
Speaker 1: you know, people seem to be really liking it and
• 1:27:29
Speaker 1: which makes a smile, and it makes so much sense
• 1:27:32
Speaker 1: to have you on whenever you're willing to come on.
• 1:27:35
Speaker 5: You know what I thought you could do that.
• 1:27:37
Speaker 4: You can either use this cut it or take this
• 1:27:40
Speaker 4: pitch and do it from now on on any podcast
• 1:27:43
Speaker 4: that I'm not on. If you guys run into a
• 1:27:47
Speaker 4: question with the guests or with each other, why did
• 1:27:49
  Speaker 4: this happen?
• 1:27:49
Speaker 5: Or is this true? You can fire it off to me.
• 1:27:53
Speaker 4: I will voice mema record a one line response that
• 1:27:55
Speaker 4: you can edit in that.
• 1:27:57
Speaker 1: That's great, that's very smart'd be like all right, Joelle,
• 1:28:01
Speaker 1: we need a bill voice note answer on this question
• 1:28:04
Speaker 1: and then we'll just cut it in when we do
• 1:28:06
  Speaker 1: the podcast editing.
• 1:28:07
Speaker 4: I love yeah, you know, as if I'm hovering there
• 1:28:11
Speaker 4: all the time, which I will not be. This is
• 1:28:13
Speaker 4: great what you guys are doing. I love you both,
• 1:28:14
Speaker 4: I miss you both.
• 1:28:15
Speaker 1: Thank you and and we love you and thank you.
• 1:28:19
Speaker 1: And you know, we ended the last episode by giving
• 1:28:22
Speaker 1: a shout out to the medical community, and I think
• 1:28:25
Speaker 1: it's right to do it since we were a show
• 1:28:26
Speaker 1: about a hospital. Just to give all our love to
• 1:28:29
Speaker 1: anybody who's listening to this, who has anyone fighting on
• 1:28:32
Speaker 1: the front lines of this insanity. Thank you so much
• 1:28:35
Speaker 1: for your courage and uh and and for being there
• 1:28:38
Speaker 1: for for all of us.
• 1:28:39
Speaker 4: And yeah, there's a thousand things you can do to
• 1:28:41
Speaker 4: be of service. You can write a check, or you
• 1:28:44
Speaker 4: can call your friend that's working at a hospital and
• 1:28:46
Speaker 4: talk to him or her every night just to see
• 1:28:48
  Speaker 4: how they're doing.
• 1:28:48
Speaker 5: But spend a few minutes and do it.
• 1:28:51
Speaker 1: Thank you so much. And on that note, Donald, will
• 1:28:53
Speaker 1: you lead us in song?
• 1:28:55
Speaker 2: Yeah? Five five six story.
• 1:29:00
Speaker 3: Show we made about a bunch of talks and nurses
• 1:29:04
Speaker 3: in Canada whom I.
• 1:29:06
Speaker 5: Said, here's the story.
• 1:29:09
Speaker 3: NEPWLL should know, so gather around you here up, gather
• 1:29:15
Speaker 3: around you here, up.
• 1:29:16
  Speaker 1: Scruts me.
• 1:29:17
Speaker 5: My show is a
