Jogo: so today's question is what are the best top five Weezer songs? and if you're not aware of Weezer, Weezer is a Los Angeles, California based band established in 1992. but yeah, we're gonna go into the top five Weezer songs, and normally the the guest does choose the question, but In this one, this one, Steve and I kind of worked together on this one. What do you think, Steve? Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, I think we were talking about I f I don't know what we were talking about, but it ended up with us deciding this would be a good topic because we're both Weezer fans and I knew I could come up with a a top five list without overthinking it. Jogo: you know what it was? I think we were talking about the new album. and and Stephen Joseph Craig: yeah. Jogo: you were saying that you're like I was like, I don't know if I like it as much, and then you're like, No, I kinda dig it. Which I think now I've been listening to it more and I'm kind of it's coming I'm coming around on it. It's actually really good. Stephen Joseph Craig: Okay, yeah, I was wondering I was wondering about that. And then yeah, I will say for context, I'm probably not as big a Weezer fan as maybe some listeners I don't know. I'm not saying I'm not a big fan, but I'm a selective fan. Like I'm I know a lot of people kind of started shying away from Weezer when when when Beverly Hills came out or whatever that album was. Like I'm one of those people. And there are like three albums by them that I listened to a lot. and you're gonna know what those are when I give my top five. But you know, but I but it yeah, so just just for context, because I'm sure this Weezer fans that could go way more into the weeds and get the best of like all the different albums. Like I did try though to prepare for this. I did try to catch up on some of the Weezer discography that I missed out on. And some of it's good and some of it's, you know, I could I could definitely do without. I tried that buddy that Beverly Hills album and it's like real Jogo: Yeah. I think it's make believe. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, it's it's like really not that good to me. So I could s I I still couldn't put but then every now and then like I'll find a like jammer or something Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: that like like I missed out on this 'cause I have them kids. I did like the new album though. I thought it w I thought the new album was good. Jogo: I did I actually kinda did a deep dive as well because I wanted to really feel like I I put the time and effort to kind of find what the top what I think the top five ones are. But we'll go into that a little little later. let's go into the community picks. Did you have any community picks? Stephen Joseph Craig: I did. So let's start with Here we go. So Alan Rigaletto said, Standout Weezer song will always be Buddy Holly. Because the music video came preloaded on Windows 95. So I watched that shit over and over. Jogo: Forgot about that. Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. And then Pamela Tripsos said if I if I didn't love you by Squeeze. I don't know if she understood the question. But that's the answer. Her top five her Jogo: There you go. Stephen Joseph Craig: her top five Weezer songs are If I didn't love you by Squeeze. Jogo: Her top five whe Weezer songs are a non Weezer song. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, one non Weezer. Jogo: Mm. Stephen Joseph Craig: But but maybe but maybe I think maybe Jogo: That's cool. Stephen Joseph Craig: she's going for something here like what we were talking about before we started rolling, like maybe that's the proto Weezer song. I don't know. I don't know that song. You know, maybe that's the true Weezer song. Jogo: There you go. Like inspired by a Weezer song, yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, yeah, like that like that's Weezer before it was Weezer. Do you listen to Squeeze? Jogo: not really. Pretty good? Pretty good band? Stephen Joseph Craig: I don't know, I never listened to them. We we should we should give him a listen after this. But Yeah, yeah, yeah. Next time I'm on here. Jogo: We'll do a top five squeeze squeeze picks. Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: and then Hayden, and then Hayden, who's in the band Gunge, put in no particular order, Buddy Holly, Dope Nose, El Scorcho, Hashpipe, say it ain't so. Jogo: Good picks, good picks. What up, Hayden? Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: If you if you ever listen. Stephen Joseph Craig: What of him? Yeah, shout out. He should well he should now. He's he's he's getting shout out. So yeah, shout out Hayden. Pamela is my my Aunt Mary's friend, we go way back. And Alan is in the band The Swill and and and a colleague of mine in the guitar world. Jogo: Guitar virtuoso. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, that's right. Virtuoso. But that's it. Jogo: Cool, good picks. I like Pamela's a lot. Really good one. Stephen Joseph Craig: Mm-hmm. Jogo: let's see. So I have David Antonio Garcia. He chose The World Has Turned and Left Me Here from the Blue Album. And he says, say say it ain't so. Pink Triangle, pork and beans, and go away. What's cool about some of these picks, cause I there's some people who kinda chose really from the blue album and and Pinkerton, kind of old school fans or like almost like purist They usually are like, Yes, those two albums. But I really liked that some people kinda were like, No, I'm gonna veer into the the new shit too as well. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. That and th and that to me are probably like that's what I mean. Those are probably real fans. You know what I mean? Like like at the end of the day, those are fans that follow the band through like their different sort of exploration or whatever their experiments and and their different iterations and all their different sounds. And like that's why I've I I'm one of those like blue album Pinkerton guys. Like those albums Jogo: Nothing. Stephen Joseph Craig: are so good. Jogo: Yeah. Nothing wrong with it too. I I love those albums too for sure. let's see. E. Pederosa tunes, he said, say it ain't so. the Jason, he chose only in dreams, tired of sex. My name is Jonas. I just threw out the love of my dreams and surfwax America. Great choices. Stephen Joseph Craig: Great choice. Jogo: I'm not gonna go the ones that I kinda have similar to those, I'll go into them l a little later, but I do I will say I just threw out the love of my dreams. Have you heard that song before? Stephen Joseph Craig: I don't think so. Jogo: So that one is Stephen Joseph Craig: Maybe. Jogo: it's it's a I don't know who's a singer of that one that sings that like it's like a a female singer that sings it and then Rivers does kinda like the harmonies on that one. It's it's really good. It's Stephen Joseph Craig: Okay. Jogo: really good and it's more like synth heavy. It's like it's a weird like weezer song. Stephen Joseph Craig: Is it it's on Pinkerton? Jogo: I think so. I think it was like a B side. Stephen Joseph Craig: I must have heard of that. Jogo: It was like a B side actually. Stephen Joseph Craig: Okay. Jogo: Totally recommend it. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, okay. Yeah, okay. Jogo: Totally recommend it. Stephen Joseph Craig: I see. Yeah, it's on the deluxe edition, that's why. Jogo: I want to say it might be Petra Hayden from that dog that was probably doing the the the main vocals on that one. then Don Juan Estrada, he said he chose the first five songs of the blue album. Thanks for listening, everybody. See you next time. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: And if you're wondering what the name what those songs were, it's my name is Jonas, No One Else, The World Has Turned, Buddy Holly, and Undone, the Sweater Song. Stephen Joseph Craig: I was wondering if anyone would say no one else 'cause that's one of my favorites. And i i is it that's yeah, I want a girl that will laugh for no one else. Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Is but that is that song like some of their songs are are considered problematic nowadays, aren't they? Jogo: Yeah, but you know, like specifically that one I didn't I didn't that wasn't one of my choices, but I think was that one of your choices? Okay. Stephen Joseph Craig: It's not, but it it could be. It could be. Cause I went through a phase where I thought like that song was just so like, you know, in my head. I listen to it all the time. I do think it's one of their better songs. Like it's up there. Jogo: I think I don't think it's problematic in the way that I think it's in si like it's very true to someone's insecurities and Stephen Joseph Craig: Right. Jogo: and someone's like, Why is she laughing at that guy's joke? Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, yeah. Jogo: like Stephen Joseph Craig: 'Cause there's always like Jogo: so Stephen Joseph Craig: a a sort of vulnerability and a weakness Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: to like the character that's singing in Weezer, right? Like the person like the river's persona. You're right, yeah, yeah. Like that Jogo: for sure. Rivers Cuomo? Stephen Joseph Craig: that persona 'cause I don't know anything about him outside of Weezer. Maybe he's like but the guy singing always is like I'm kind of a weak, vulnerable guy here. Like that's you know and not Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: exactly like in a way that we're supposed to think he's right about everything either. Jogo: Yeah. so I can kinda see that he might have been like I I'm like I don't I'm not well equipped with these things and you're like laughing at this person, so I'm I'm upset about that and hurt or something, you know. But that that could be part of that song, I guess. Stephen Joseph Craig: It's true. It's true. It I and I'm happy to hear that because I think that's a really good song. Maybe that is on my Jogo: It's a good song. Stephen Joseph Craig: thumb. Jogo: It's a good song. Stephen Joseph Craig: that is on my Yeah, yeah. I th I I don't know what it is about that one. I think it is 'cause it's so real and it's so but it's also so catchy. Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: so yeah, I was wondering if anyone would say that one. Jogo: Kat Ryder, she she chose in the garage. She said the g guitar is so heavy, but the chorus is so sweet, it's relatable too. I love that song. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, it's a vibe. Jogo: It it's like a Stranger Things kid that that that might a might be in a band or something Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: like that. He's like, Hey I got my twelve sided die Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: He's got ace free ace freely posters on the wall and whatever. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. It's great. It's ca because it's one of those songs that like the story that it's telling is the sound. Like it sounds like that. Like somehow Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: it all like all the pieces are in the right place where it's like you get what this is. This is that moment of having fun in your garage in like the most safe place ever where you could be Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: a total nerd and like pretend you're a rock star. And and it's you know what I mean? Like so yeah, that's Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: a good choice too. Jogo: Spooky Fox, Spooky Under underscore Fox said, man, Suzanne, falling for you, no other one. Only in dreams, surf wax America. He said, That was hard. I could easily swap a couple of those for others. Stephen Joseph Craig: It is hard, like they have a lot of bangers. Jogo: Suzanne's a good one too. That's a deep cut. That was on the Mall rat soundtrack. He Stephen Joseph Craig: Okay. Jogo: was like Suzanne wanted in the girl. All that I need in the Stephen Joseph Craig: I think yeah, I'm sure I've heard that. Jogo: world. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yes, yeah, yeah, that's a good song. I think I I actually now I'm remembering I I started making a playlist of like songs from Weezer that are not on the albums that I listen to. So I do have song even from make believe there's some bangs, you know. Like the other way, Pardon Me and Hold Me I have for make believe. I think they had an album they had an album where they went like rock and roll or they tried to do like a like a Van Halen kinda thing. Did you know about this? Van Weezer. I d see yeah, Jogo: like it Van Van Wezer, right? It's called Van Weezer Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: that's I didn't even know about that. That's how out of touch I am. Jogo: See, Saul, he chose, he You gave your love to me softly, of sex, holiday, Suzanne, and only in dreams. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, James is Jogo: No. Stephen Joseph Craig: a big one. Jogo: Yeah. You Gave Your Love to Me Softly. I made my my my list and then I saw that he chose that that song and I was like shit, that's such a fucking good song. I I didn't put it in my list, but that one is a really good song if you have not heard that song. Roho lookomotion, he chose Say it ain't so, the world is turned across the sea, El Scorcho and Jamie. Dang, Jamie. I haven't heard that one a while. Advents, he said Stephen Joseph Craig: Drop on SAT off of Jogo: it's like a B side on the blue album. Stephen Joseph Craig: Okay. Jogo: Altered Vince said, say it ain't so the good life, pink triangle, knockdown, drag out, and pork and beans. Stephen Joseph Craig: There's only one of mine that hasn't been mentioned Jogo: Cult Gent he said or he chose he said you gave me you gave me your love so softly. No one else, no other one, go away, summary Elaine and drunk Dory. Stephen Joseph Craig: Wait, did anyone say Buddy Holly yet? Jogo: I think your friend did. Stephen Joseph Craig: that's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Jogo: So that song's Stephen Joseph Craig: What's your dory? Jogo: it's called Summery Lane and Drunk Dory. That's off the white album. That I love that song, dude. Stephen Joseph Craig: What what do you like about like 'cause you've been a fan of Weezer for a while and stop me if Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: I'm if I'm if you don't want to talk about this, but like what what do you like how do you describe their music? Like what's what's great about it? Like what do you get out of Weezer? Jogo: I'd rather not talk about it. But I'm just kidding. Stephen Joseph Craig: It's a very tough subject. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, Jogo: Weezer saved my life as a kid. I was actually gonna get hit by a car and the whole band pushed me. Yeah. No Stephen Joseph Craig: wow. That's great. That's a great success Jogo: No, Stephen Joseph Craig: story. Jogo: think a lot of it is I grew up as like an awkward kid. I grew up and I'm still an awkward man, you know? but I always found the a lot of humor in general, being awkward and kind of like in s in certain situations. And you know, I I always never felt like I said this the r the correct thing or the cool thing. And I think Weezer definitely Is very much that. Like they never I don't feel like they say the cool thing even as much as they try. Like there's one that a song called Dangerous. It's like, Come on everybody, let's get dangerous. Like it feels like it's so so put on, you know, like Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Like Jogo: and Stephen Joseph Craig: even when he's talking about being a tough guy, it's like there's a winking to the audience, like a self awareness that that yeah. Jogo: Absolutely. And I think he I'm sure he kinda knows it. I hope he knows it. like and I think there's a lot of that. and plus I don't know, it's kind of weird. I think Weezer does have this kind of professional musician ship to them. their shredding and you're like their sound all together feels very especially in the later albums, feels very like you could tell this is a professional band. but yeah, I think they're great. I think they're and I I will say there are some albums that I was I kind of like checked out on, like Hurley and Ratitude. I I tried I listened to them once and I was like, yeah, probably not for me. Let's see. So la last person is I am Caesar Rod. He chose Buddy Holly. So there you go with the Buddy Holly. And then Hashpipe, Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: Sweater Song, We Are All On Drugs. Hey, there you go. We are all on drugs. And then Island of the Sun. So even the We are all on drugs, it's like, hey guys, yeah, we're all on drugs, guys. Like it Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Jogo: doesn't feel like a s yeah, like it doesn't feel like when people are on drugs, like it's a cool feel of like, yeah. It's like, let's rock out. We're have we're on drugs. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, and there's some self awareness to it that makes it great. Jogo: So that's it for the community picks. Let's go into our personal picks. you wanna go first? Stephen Joseph Craig: Okay, yeah, so my number five is only because okay, so the third album, so you already know the blue album and Pinkerton are the two of the albums that I listen to the most. And really the blue album more than Pinkerton. But the album I listen to more than those two is actually Maladroidt. I so I needed to pick something for Maladroid because for me, if I could, number five would just be Maladjoid the album. I thought it was I thought it was cool, great guitar album, great drumming, really good draw, like really so and I think that's what makes them sound so professional to me. It's like the drummer is so in the pocket and never never too flashy, but puts the fills like in the right place. but then also the guitar tones, you know, are more explorative where one song doesn't exactly sound like the song before it, you know, like you get Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: different you get like a wide range of tones. So I listened to Maladjoid and decided that the song that I would pick is Space Rock, which is track eight. And check that out because I think it's got a really cool energy. It's fast and then it breaks down. It's got great drum fills. It's got that chunky heavy guitar tone, but then like brings it down and and has some good leads in there and a great sort of complex vocal melody. So like I said, really if I could, Malajoit as an album would be number five, but because I have to pick a song, I pick track eight, space rock. Jogo: Is that the one that he was like do do do do do Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah yeah. yeah yeah. it's kind of an experimental like structure too, you know? It's Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: it's almost like disjointed the way the melody Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: comes in. Jogo: It's a game. That's all yeah, that's that's a good song. That is a good song. Stephen Joseph Craig: I don't know. Yeah. But you can't have fun with yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's just like the the way the melody builds in this weird way. Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Again, I I just th I think it's kind of an an experimental album, but I think it like the songs are still catchy and heavy Jogo: Mm-hmm. Stephen Joseph Craig: and they like check they check all the boxes for me. And that song especially. Like I think that's a good one. It hits hard. The drum Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: you know, the drum stuff so kapo boom boom boom kapo. You know, like really Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: big, heavy fills. And yeah, I can geek out about it. But that that's my number five. Number four and three are from Pickerton. I would say the good life. think, Jogo: That's a good one. Stephen Joseph Craig: yeah, I think the good life for me, you can dance to it as a fun song or bop your head to it, but then there's also this sort of like sentimentality to it, talking about wanting to get back, you know, and like aging and and wishy, you know, like you can kind of like say that you know what there's like a there's like a sadness and a truth to it. Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: But it's done but it's done under layers of of Weezer's sort of fun, great song, well produced, well performed. Jogo: Do you relate Stephen Joseph Craig: and Jogo: to it at this point? I mean, I don't know like if you do relate to it 'cause you're still f fairly young, but I don't know. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, I don't I don't. I I I I'm happy Jogo: Okay. Stephen Joseph Craig: to say I don't, but that fear that that's coming. I maybe fear's too strong of a word, but that like Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: that feeling that that's coming of like not being able to get up and do the things I wanna do, Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: is it you know, it's there. Like that that thought is there. Like someday that will be me. And I think that Jogo: I I r Stephen Joseph Craig: song does that for me. You do really? Jogo: I relate I relate to that song deeply, yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Really? You Jogo: Where yeah, where you're like Stephen Joseph Craig: wanna shake your booty? Jogo: Well it was like more of like when you look in the mirror you're like who's this old guy looking back at me, you know? Or like or like Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Jogo: that whole thing where he was like gonna check out ch check in my rock star card or something like that. for me I'm not Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: I've never been a real rock star. But I mean like I've I haven't really pl Stephen Joseph Craig: You're checking that then. Jogo: Yeah, I haven't I don't play music in a band anymore. I'm like, I think I'm good. So part of me is just like I totally relate to that song for sure. Getting up getting up there a little. Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, yeah. Well, I think it is. Yeah, yeah. I think that's it. And and he probably wrote it pretty young, but it's one of those songs like like that Aerosmith song where he wrote that when he was like sixteen or something, but he Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: but it has that, you know Sing with me, sing for the year sing for the laughter and that that one. Jogo: yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, all the lines in my face getting clearer, like the you know, like they're writing it with this sort of young fun. vibe but they're like also kind of nailing the truth behind it that that are that Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: are you know, you're seeing yourself aging, you're seeing yourself, you know, not being able to do what you used to be able to do and life moving on in that way. but like I said with Weezer, I also think you could play that same like I like things that are multifaceted in that way where Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: I I could play it and just, you know, rock out, bop my head, have a good time. Or I could kinda like sit with it and be like, there's a darkness there, you know. Jogo: also that that album, isn't it like based off of Madam Butterfly or something like that? It's like it Stephen Joseph Craig: really? Jogo: it's a c it's a concept album based off of yeah, of Madame Butterfly. Stephen Joseph Craig: that's that's why it's like tired of sex and wait, really? Well, I thought 'cause isn't it a lot of personal stuff too? Jogo: I'm sure it is, maybe, but that's what I had heard. And let I mean I'm sure he was also really tired of sex too, 'cause like, yeah. He's a rock star. At that time he was he still had his Rockstar card. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, 'cause he's a rock star. He's consoling. Yeah. I get tired of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Literally like five songs prior. but my number my number three choice is the next track, which is El Scorcho. and that's one that I think is problematic 'cause he said you know, he talks about ha half Japanese girls or something. I don't know. I'm I'm with like I'm not the jury of of what's problematic or not. I'm with you. I think he's kind of a a vulnerable flawed fool, you know, in Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: love in a lot of these songs, you know. and El Scorzo just has this sort of again that energy, that natural flow where everyone's singing along and there's like Muppet voices thrown in and the the drums are in the in the pocket. Like it just it sounds like a band that's so comfortable in their skin, like Jogo: Mm-hmm. Stephen Joseph Craig: to just like jam everyone's on the same page, everyone's riding that same wave to the Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: point where like you can't not sing along to the chorus. I think it's infectious. I think it's an amazing song. I think all these songs in my top five to me are like great songs. Like Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: they could all be number one on a different list, you know? and now what about I'm on number two, right? Jogo: Yeah, you're our number two. Stephen Joseph Craig: El Scorcho Buddy Holly, not surprising. I think that, yeah, you know, sweater songs and there's there's a lot of great songs from the blue album, so that makes it tough. Like I c I could you know, I I didn't want the I didn't want my top five to all be from the blue album. Buddy Holly is just a song that I think I can put on and I'm confident most people in the room are gonna enjoy it. Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: I think I think how accessible and fun it is. the the music video directed by Spike Jones being in Happy Days is like is great. It you know, it I I I just think anyone any and anyone's like parents and anyone's grandparents and kids will will always kind of dig that song and it's great. And that's that's it. That's the reason it's number two. Jogo: it's pretty like it yeah, it's un undeniably good, I think. It's there's a few of their songs that like and I'm sure that's why they play them at every at every gig, every show they're they're gonna play. Buddy Holly is definitely one of those songs where you're like, shit, it's such a catchy song and I feel it's also very different than a lot of the other songs on that album too. Like Stephen Joseph Craig: It does stand out. Yeah. Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: It's got a good solo. Good w w which a lot of their songs do. It's got that cool like bang, bang, knock on the door. Whatever that is, that like I don't know what that's called, like cheerleader thing. What you gonna what you gonna what you gonna do? Like Yeah. Yeah, Jogo: It's a weird it's a weird bridge, dude. It's like a weird bridge. Hey da ba da da like Is that so Stephen Joseph Craig: yeah. But again, that to me is like a band that has found a sound and they're so comfortable in it that now they're just like playing around with it, which is something Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: I love about Weezer. Like it feels like, okay, we found this, like let's kind of jam and like loosen up on it. And that's to me where they get those parts of like, you know, what's the matter, what's the matter, what's the matter you? Jogo: And then have like they throw in like a little synth too as well, that me no no no no. Stephen Joseph Craig: I mean and that that in itself I think is iconic. That little like Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: yeah bee beah yeah. Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: it's great, it's great. But number one, I think it's obvious. I think it's obvious. I I would be I I don't know how old was I when it came out? You know, maybe first or second grade, and in those years like slowly you know, I would hear this song on the radio and be like, Man, like who is this like like it j you feel it. Like it's one of those songs that you feel it and and it's just like who is this band? And it's what drove me towards them. And again, it still could just be a fun, catchy song, but it also has like these layers underneath. Should you choose to di dig in or feel that sort of and it's saying it so it's the best. It's just like incredible song. It's Hendrix style riffing with Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: ska influence with rock. I I I heard it called an emo. I I I don't I hate Evo. And I and if Jogo: Mm-hmm. Stephen Joseph Craig: it's an Evo song, I it doesn't change anything to me. Like I love it. I love it that there's rock and metal and and a great solo and the he's feeling it by the time the bridge comes in. You know, I love I love that too when like the bridge or that final chorus comes in and then it's like by that point you're like this singer is like actually meaning what he's saying. Even though he's entertaining, Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: even though it's like, you know, entertaining, you get that sort of like, okay, I'm entertaining you, but also at this point you should know what I'm singing right now comes from my fucking heart. And that's what saying it so is to me. Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: you could dance to it, you can you could, you know, feel it. you could skank to it. You Jogo: Skank, you can skank to it. Stephen Joseph Craig: know, I I I just think it rocks. I think it's just an amazing Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: song It's one of the first songs I learned how to play or one of the early songs I learned how to play on guitar. I never I don't today I don't get tired of playing it, the solo or or the riff or whatever. It's like when I plug in a guitar to try it out sometimes, I bang out that bao doo doo doo ba Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: and it has that great groove to it and you know. Jogo: Yeah, Stephen Joseph Craig: you feel it, man. Jogo: you and I actually I think that's the only song that we we both have on our lists. dude. I I love Stephen Joseph Craig: Interesting. Jogo: just go into it too as well, like, since it connects, nice segue. But like Say It Ain't So to me okay, so I will say this. To me, I do think that And I'm gonna get a lot of shit for this. I get a lot of shit for this. Stephen Joseph Craig: Here it comes. Jogo: the reason I didn't choose a lot of the songs on the blue album, because I re-listened to all the albums the other day, right? And as much as I love all the blue album songs, I do feel like a lot of them are semi, semi devoid of emotion. and I do think that Say It Ain't So is super emotional and super like heartfelt, super kind of dark, Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: and I felt that felt the like the most real song in that album. And not to say the other ones aren't like sincere, 'cause they are very they are very kind of quirky and fun. But I think say it ain't so is like a real stretch, I think, for for Rivers Cuomo as a writer, I think. 'Cause it does feel the most Stephen Joseph Craig: I think Jogo: real. But Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, I was looking up like the catalyst for writing it or whatever and it was he saw a bottle of beer in the fridge or you know whatever and that alone made him think that his parents are gonna divorce or something. It just has this like again that core truth and like simplicity to it, that like raw human emotion and experience with just like he sees a beer, he fe you know the the feeling of hopelessness that the world's gonna fall apart again and and yeah you feel that I I forgot to say with Buddy Holly, I looked this up real quick. And do you know the do you know the origin of that at all? Jogo: No. Stephen Joseph Craig: fact check me, but my my qu very quick lazy research, it was it was that his band members were being dicks to a friend that like came to visit them. and so it was actually like we like Weezer, like like one of Rivers friends, like from Ban, Marching Band or something like that, like visiting Weezer and Weezer, like those guys like being hostile towards him. So he Jogo: Really? Stephen Joseph Craig: wrote, Yeah, that that's what I saw. So I don't I don't know. Jogo: Dang. That's pretty crazy. It's like the the hierarchy of nerds. Like Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah yeah. I mean if there if there is a hierarchy of nerds, Weezer's at the top. Jogo: heck yeah, they're like the kings. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, King Nerds for sure. Jogo: I love the blue album. I I think they're all great songs. I'll go into my list. and no no particular order. one of my choices is Tired of Sex from Pinkerton. it's kind of crazy like going from like the blue album to P to Pinkerton in general and then starting off with Tired Tired of Sex. I remember like I could remember the first time hearing that album. And Tired of Sex goes on, and I was just like, Holy shit, this is pretty amazing. This is just like very raw, very raw sounding weezer. if that other one was not as much emotion, this is just like very much out there, very truthful to like what he might be going through. At that time, I that's how I felt. Stephen Joseph Craig: And that and that one that at the end I think when it comes in like da da da da ding ding ding Jogo: Doom doom doom doom doom doom doom Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: It's so heavy and crunchy. Yeah, I love that Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: thumb too. Jogo: altogether, that song is like 'cause it's not like dan dan dan dan dan dan dan like it's not just a consistent kind of like grunge kind of like you know Stephen Joseph Craig: Charging. Jogo: yeah. It's there's a lot more dyn dynamics in general going on in that song. my next Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: one is Hashpipe on the green album. that green album I remember it came out, I think when it came out, they hadn't didn't have a release for a good while. I think Rivers was supposedly really disappointed on how people took the Pinkerton, took it in a bad way. so it came out on the green album, new bassists, and I always thought this song in general was like just a rocking song. Like dan dan dan dan dan dan dan dun. Like it does remind me of the Monsters theme song a little bit, but still fucking badass. Yeah, I think it's a good song. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, yeah. That's okay though. Yeah. Jogo: And it's it's the most different song from on on that album. Hashpipe and probably Island and the Sun are the the two singles, and those are like probably the best songs on the album. Stephen Joseph Craig: I I I know Islet of the Sun is a big one. Like that's a that's is that their biggest hit you'd say? Or I I don't know what their biggest hit is. Jogo: Probably outside of like Buddy Holly and Say It Aint So, because those other those songs were like on like K-ROQ forever. And Island on the Sun was Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: on like VH one. I remember that that they had a few couple of videos on VH one of Island on the Sun. And then it was also on MTV. So I mean it was a pretty big hit. So I don't know. Stephen Joseph Craig: yeah, Jogo: You you could be right. Stephen Joseph Craig: I thought so. It's their number one song on Spotify here too. Jogo: shit. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, yeah. I I I think it's a pretty huge song. I don't know what it is, but I never got into Hashpipe. I might have to revisit Green Album now and listen to it. I think I always cause I hear what you're saying, I just I think I always just thought, you're not that bad. Jogo: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: do doing the doing the heavy, you know, the heavy song with the with the falset with the falsetto singing, you know. Like but I also probably correct me for wrong, but it's probably that's part of the fun of it, them doing like Van Weezer, is that there's a self-awareness that he knows like, okay, I'm not really you know Yeah, yeah, like I'm not Jogo: Like tough or something. Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: like we're not Pantera or, you know, King Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: Diamond Diamond or something. But but we're going for it and it's fun and that's what makes it good. So that's why I think I Jogo: Yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig: bet you if I revisited it, I'd I'd probably like it a lot. Jogo: Yeah, 'cause I mean that whole hash pipe thing where he's like, like that that attitude Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, 'cause yeah, that's it. It's the attitude, it's like it's the it's the false sound of like That sounds so kind of like weak to me, but I think maybe the weakness is part of the fun of it. Jogo: I don't know. I always I always like Stephen Joseph Craig: I don't know. I don't wanna piss anybody off. It it's obviously a huge hit song. Jogo: Yes, that was my pick, Steve. But anyways, just kidding You're like you're like fuck your pick bro. Stephen Joseph Craig: Sorry. Yeah, yeah, yeah, dude. Fuck that song, idiot. Yeah, yeah. Fuck you, Jogo. Are we allowed to even curse on this show? I feel like it's so innocent. Jogo: Welcome to Bestmos. Yeah, you can. You can. let's see. My other one is I have two more. One of them is LA Girls. on their white album. on their white album. I feel it's it's a pretty good song and it kind of doesn't take itself too seriously, but it has a really great melody. I think there's a lot of songs by By Weezer, where there is no edge to it really. It's really just kind of a good, easy listening song. And as a as a person that was in a band that was, I don't feel like we had any edge, but I did feel like we had fairly easy listening music. I could appreciate it. thought LA Girls was a is a well written song, catchy song. And that whole album is really good. If you've if you've listened to White The White Album. just really quick, I would say give it a few more listens because it's probably them back to form see. Stephen Joseph Craig: Nice. Jogo: someone mentioned that Rivers Cuomo is the new is the Brian Wilson of of our generation or something. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. That's cool. Jogo: And then my last pick is all my favorite songs. it's like one of the latest last albums, I guess, or most Stephen Joseph Craig: OK Human Jogo: Okay, human, there you go. again, another easy listening kind of song, great I think a really well written song. And I I think super relatable. Stephen Joseph Craig: Yeah. Jogo: Well, so on that note, that has been our show. That's been our episode. thanks to Stephen Joseph Craig for being on this episode.
