Latest / Bookies' Favourite / International Booker Prize 2025 | Winner Reaction
Transcript
- 0:11Hi, we're back time to dust off those dust off those bookshelves
- 0:17book his favorite are. Back yes and I have my
- 0:20microphone again, so apologies for my mic quality in the
- 0:25previous couple of. Potato.
- 0:27I'm always a potato. Apologies for not returning.
- 0:33When we said that we would return in our previous episodes,
- 0:39we did mention that we would be reacting to the winner of the
- 0:43International Booker Prize 2025. We lied and.
- 0:47We lied, we lied. We were all travelling, we were
- 0:51all in different parts of the world and scheduling issues and
- 0:56tech issues. Now that we're big, big in the
- 0:59in the book, you know the book space, like where?
- 1:02I mean, guys, we hit 1K listener.
- 1:04So we're we're big now. Sorry Hannah, we we don't have
- 1:081K of the snooze, we have 1K listens.
- 1:11So. Yeah, this is my mum.
- 1:17Just. Three people, thank you for your
- 1:22service. We wanted to say congratulations
- 1:28to Banu for winning with Heart Lamp.
- 1:32None of us. It was not our fave, but go
- 1:36Banu, yeah. None of us had predicted it,
- 1:40none of us had enjoyed it the most out of all six books, but a
- 1:48well deserved win and we do all agree, I think, that it was very
- 1:55successful in in what it was trying to do in terms of sharing
- 1:59the stories of women in that part of the world and that
- 2:02culture. You know, one of my favorite
- 2:05things was in her speech, I'm talking about how no story is
- 2:09like too small to tell or something like that.
- 2:13But I just, I know it's really heartfelt.
- 2:16It really got me in the fields and it just made me kind of
- 2:19appreciate her work. I mean, not that it was one of
- 2:22my favorite ones, but I just made me have a better
- 2:25appreciation. And also I didn't realize that
- 2:28the translators and the authors shared the prize, so that was
- 2:31amazing as well. So they both get, is it 50,000
- 2:34lbs. So. 25,000 each.
- 2:37Oh, I thought was 50. Never mind. 50 all together
- 2:40that's the same. I think that's the same for the
- 2:42normal Booker, it's like 50 but because it doesn't it you can't
- 2:47split it with the English language ones that haven't been.
- 2:50Just get it all. I'm pretty sure that's true.
- 2:53But yeah, it's a it's a split. But I think that the work that
- 2:57Deepa Bashdi, because the work that she did was incredible and
- 3:01the speeches that they both made, it really hit home the
- 3:04importance of like languages that we don't usually hear in
- 3:07translation, especially in the English speaking world.
- 3:10It's like we get, you know, European translations and we get
- 3:13a lot of different ones. There's so many different
- 3:14languages, especially within India, you know, there's so many
- 3:18languages. And I think it was like 2 years
- 3:20ago there was a Tamil long listed book and that was the
- 3:24first time that had that had been nominated for the
- 3:27international. And I really hope that this
- 3:29means that we'll get more like language.
- 3:32I mean, I say small languages, it's like millions of people
- 3:35speak these languages, but it's like it's so interesting to have
- 3:40these things are kind of kept from us before.
- 3:42And it's like with translations and people like Banu and Deepa
- 3:46winning these prizes, it's like we're going to see more of that.
- 3:48And I think that's only ever going to be a positive thing.
- 3:51Yeah, very exciting. We have decided that we're not
- 3:54going to jump into another shortlist just quite yet.
- 3:59We will be jumping. Spice things up.
- 4:01Spicy. We will be jumping into another
- 4:05shortlist in the future, but for the time being, for the in
- 4:10between, we're going to switch it up and instead of reading a
- 4:15book week to week, we're going to do every other week.
- 4:18So every two weeks we will have a new episode with a new book.
- 4:22We are going to involve you, the listener, as part.
- 4:27Of the listener. The single listener.
- 4:31Yeah. Lucy's mother.
- 4:33Lucy, at least your mother listens.
- 4:35Yeah, true. What not She's not up to date.
- 4:40I think when they got a bit longer, she was kind of like
- 4:42perfection was OK for her because it's 20 minutes and I
- 4:45think when they got like. Maybe she can listen in 20
- 4:48minute increments. Yes, yeah, I I think she's doing
- 4:51that. I think it's just over, over the
- 4:54weeks she's like just slowly but surely she'll, she'll be up to
- 4:57date. Yeah, in like 4 weeks she'll
- 5:00phone me and be like, why did you slag me off on your most
- 5:02recent podcast? Mum?
- 5:05We're way ahead here. So we we are going to involve
- 5:08you as the listener in the book club.
- 5:11You are going to help us decide what books we will be reading.
- 5:16A little more on that later, but next week we will be coming to
- 5:21you with a new book review, a new discussion.
- 5:27We have picked it ourselves. You have one week to read it.
- 5:32That book is going to be. Aiden Shore by Oshing Fagan.
- 5:40It was so anti climactic. I just, I'm not very.
- 5:45I also thought that you were like, you've got to read it
- 5:47within a week or else like you're gonna get shot or
- 5:50something. No, no, I just want to let
- 5:52people wait. And if don't read this book
- 5:55within the week, Aaron is personally going to come to your
- 5:58house and shoot you. Yes, this this book is a new
- 6:03Wish release. It was at least published in
- 6:052025. It's I think it's April 2025 S.
- 6:09Very recent. Very recent and may I say it has
- 6:12an incredible cover. I was in Galway and I was in
- 6:16this bookshop and I saw the cover, didn't read anything
- 6:19about it and I just bought it on a whim because of the cover.
- 6:22And I mean, the blurb's fine. Sounds sounds like it'll be
- 6:25good. I haven't read it yet, but and
- 6:27Colin did the exact same thing, which is why we're choosing it.
- 6:30Well, I don't know if he he probably read the blurb.
- 6:32He strikes me as a blurb reading guy.
- 6:34I wasn't quite as learning like a magpie as Lucy was.
- 6:37I I saw it. I saw it in a few lists, like
- 6:39online people were talking about, like it was getting some
- 6:41buzz and also the cover. And so when I saw it, I grabbed
- 6:45it as soon as I could. Basically it's about an Irish
- 6:48man in the 18th century who boards a ship from Liverpool and
- 6:54he's planning to go start a utopia in Latin America.
- 6:59A bunch of shenanigans happens on the ship and he ends up in a
- 7:03Spanish colonized part of Latin America and he gets involved in
- 7:09drama. So it sounds good to me, and I
- 7:13think that we are probably all in agreement that we all have a
- 7:17crush on Arsheen Fagan based off his author's picture at the back
- 7:22of the book. So do.
- 7:24Not drag me into this. Well, we can all appreciate his
- 7:29looks in the picture. If you want to have have a look
- 7:33and see what Arsheen looks like, then buy the book.
- 7:37And since you've bought the book to look at him, you might as
- 7:39well read along with. Us, we're just objectifying this
- 7:42per man. I know I'm.
- 7:43Sure, I'm sure his book is great too.
- 7:46Well, to be determined. And no, I just think it's funny
- 7:48that like, I only bought it because I thought the cover was
- 7:52great and I feel like you guys only are interested because the
- 7:55author's good looking. It's like, are we just so looks
- 7:59obsessed? No, well, you don't.
- 8:02Even. Need to read it.
- 8:04Don't judge the book by its cover.
- 8:06Judge the author. No.
- 8:07Judge the book by its author. Would if the authors handsome
- 8:11get the book, but I I disagree with that.
- 8:14Now to announce our next how how we're going to do things from
- 8:20this point forward for at least a few weeks.
- 8:25As we said, it's going to be involving the listener.
- 8:29It's going to be involving you. We want to hear what you think.
- 8:33We are going to post a poll on all of our social media starting
- 8:39from this episode and each episode going forward, all four
- 8:43of us are going to pitch a book based on four different
- 8:46categories. You vote and pick which book you
- 8:51want us to read next. And you better pick mine, guys.
- 8:57So in our in our episode next week in our review of Eden
- 9:01Shore, we will be announcing what book we will be reading
- 9:05from for the following episode for the the following two weeks.
- 9:11Based off your votes, you have until midnight on Friday before
- 9:17each episode is released. 2 votes.
- 9:20You can vote in several places including Instagram, Twitter,
- 9:25Facebook and Spotify. There might be others added such
- 9:31as Goodreads. We will see what what happens.
- 9:34We'll see where people vote, but just check our description for
- 9:38this episode. We will have all the links there
- 9:40to where you can vote. The more that you vote, the more
- 9:43say you have. So go to all of our social
- 9:46medias and vote each time. Hannah to win.
- 9:53I'm still going to lose now that I've said this like 5,000,000
- 9:56times. Does somebody want to explain
- 10:00the categories that we're going with?
- 10:02So our first category is just been crowned, which means it's
- 10:06won an award very recently, or second category Freshly Bind
- 10:12published within the last month or third category now renowned
- 10:17currently on a shortlist or a long list.
- 10:20And our 4th category is Been Around which is a personal
- 10:25choice of a book we'd like to read.
- 10:27Now I am blaming Aaron for the names of these categories and
- 10:31how it's like asking someone from Belfast to say how now
- 10:35Brian Coy like 7 times. I have a personal grudge against
- 10:41you for that Aaron. But those are our 4 categories
- 10:43and I think Aaron should probably also include them
- 10:46subtitled correctly somewhere, because I can imagine that the
- 10:49subtitling on Spotify is going to absolutely mess up whatever
- 10:52I've tried to say there. Who wants to do theirs first?
- 10:56Let's go in order. Let's go with has been crowned.
- 11:01Yeah. So that's me with that one.
- 11:04All right. OK.
- 11:04Now I need a bit of prep, guys. I need everyone's mics off for
- 11:08this for my chosen book. I'm going to take you back to
- 11:11Syracuse 412 BC. The Athenians have just suffered
- 11:16A shocking naval defeat off the coast of Sicily and thousands
- 11:19have been taken prisoner on the island.
- 11:21We are in the midst of the Peloponnesian Wars.
- 11:24Tensions are high. 2 aimless Syracusan Potters happen upon
- 11:29some starving Athenian prisoners of war.
- 11:33In exchange for much needed food from the 2 Potters, the
- 11:36Athenians agreed to put on a performance of Euripides Medea.
- 11:40So I can hear the naysayers ask me why I'm choosing a dry piece
- 11:43of historical fiction. It's all been done before.
- 11:47But this is no ordinary book about ancient history.
- 11:50The author has bravely gone in a radical new direction and asked
- 11:54the question on everyone's mind. Why shouldn't ancient Sicilians
- 11:58have Dublin accents? This book has prizes coming out
- 12:02of its ears. It's been shortlisted for pretty
- 12:04much everything. It's won the Authors Club Debut
- 12:07Fiction Prize, the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize, the
- 12:10Bollinger Everyman Woodhouse Prize.
- 12:13And it's they're practically inventing prizes now just to
- 12:15give this book. And this book, of course, is
- 12:20Glorious Exploits by Ferdia. Lennon is pretty much never had
- 12:24a bad review or one that I've seen, and I think everyone
- 12:28universally has loved it. So I think it would be a
- 12:30fantastic choice for our next book club read.
- 12:35Oh, that's quite interesting. I mean, at the start I was
- 12:39thinking, I don't know, but I mean, you kind of caught me
- 12:42there. Yeah, I like your dramatic, your
- 12:43dramatic backing track, Lucy. It really has solidified the
- 12:46theme. You know, I felt like we were
- 12:48in, in Sicily. So that is our just been crowned
- 12:53has been crowned category. What is What's next in our
- 12:57categories? It's Hannah with Freshly Bound.
- 12:59Well everyone, do you love Ireland and in particular do you
- 13:05love all things Belfast? Well I got the book for you.
- 13:11So this is Thirst Trap by Grenya O'Hara.
- 13:14So it's a perfect blend of humour and heartache.
- 13:17Think Sally Rooney meets girls with a distinctly Belfast twist.
- 13:20I mean, who does not want that? So we follow.
- 13:24It's a shared house that's crumbling apart in South
- 13:27Belfast. Anyone who's been to Queens or
- 13:29Ulster, you know what it's been like living in the Holy Lands
- 13:32area. So it follows 3 friends, Maggie,
- 13:36Harley and Rosha, navigating life after the sudden death of
- 13:40their housemate Lydia. With their house falling apart
- 13:43and their friendship on the rocks, they're forced to
- 13:45confront their grief when their past and the messy reality of
- 13:48growing up all hits. It's said to be a sharp, witty
- 13:51narrative that captures the complexities of friendship and
- 13:54loss. Uh, the characters are flawed,
- 13:57funny, and utterly relatable, and it's been called a must read
- 14:01for fans of contemporary fiction, but with a touch of
- 14:03dark humor. Well, guys, it gets even better
- 14:05because not only has Days and The Irish Times called it the
- 14:09most anticipated novel of 2025, but the lovely RTE has also
- 14:13called it the most anticipated novel of 2025.
- 14:17And if I haven't sold it to you already, just look up the cover
- 14:20and I think that'll sell it even more to you.
- 14:22So guys, choose me, Hannah, for your pick for the book, there's
- 14:27Traffic Chrono. That book sounds very relatable.
- 14:30I think all of us can relate. Sorry.
- 14:33Well, why can't you relate to Syracuse?
- 14:35412 BC. Because I don't have a Dublin
- 14:40accent, Lucy. That's a.
- 14:43Unrelatable part of it. Someone living in Dublin.
- 14:47Madness. For someone that is grown up
- 14:49here, I do not love reading books about here, but this is
- 14:53the first book that's caught my eyebrow.
- 14:54I'm like, you know what? I feel I could, like, laugh
- 14:57about it because there's so much relatability to it.
- 15:00I do have to agree with you, I am not a fan of books based
- 15:03here. I'm not.
- 15:05This is rage. Oh, sorry.
- 15:06I thought you were gonna slag my book off there.
- 15:08I was like. She was she was getting ready to
- 15:10launch an attack counter offensive.
- 15:12She's like pipeline, pipeline. Yeah, they're attacking me.
- 15:15Defend. Defend.
- 15:18Just on constant defense mode here, ready to kill.
- 15:24On to the the next category, which is now renowned and that
- 15:29is me. I am my my choice for for this
- 15:33week. So now renowned is our category
- 15:36four books that are on a shortlist, on a long list.
- 15:40I think we can also say have previously been on a shortlist
- 15:43or a long list. They don't have to be existing
- 15:46on a shortlist or a long list right now.
- 15:49Just so it happens that my book this week is currently on a
- 15:53shortlist. The book I have chosen is The
- 15:56Tusks of Extinction by Ray Naylor.
- 16:02So this book is currently on 2 short lists that I have found.
- 16:07One is the Hugo Awards and the other is the Nebula Awards.
- 16:14So both of them lean into sci-fi and fantasy books and novels.
- 16:23The Nebula Awards is more of the actual writing industry and they
- 16:31are the the voters in that, while the Hugo Awards are just
- 16:36fans basically and is chosen by fans.
- 16:40So obviously this book is particularly successful if it is
- 16:45on 2 existing shortlists. This falls under the novella
- 16:52category for both and I think it seems like the most interesting
- 16:58of all the novellas on both shortlists, so we will see if
- 17:02it's it's going to win. This book is basically about the
- 17:07sci-fi based on the future. Moscow has brought the woolly
- 17:12mammoth back to life and in hopes that they don't go extinct
- 17:19again, they add the digitized memories and consciousness of a
- 17:28woman that fought for the survival of elephants against
- 17:34poachers and she she's been murdered.
- 17:37So they they add her consciousness into one of the
- 17:40mammoths to teach them how to survive against poachers.
- 17:45She has her memories. She remembers being murdered and
- 17:50there's maybe a bit of a darker reason as to why these elephants
- 17:54have been part of these mammoths have been brought back from the
- 17:57dead. So it sounds very interesting to
- 17:59me. It sounds like something that is
- 18:02very topical. And now that direwolves have
- 18:06been supposedly brought back from extinction and the woolly
- 18:11mammoth is on the horizon. And please vote for me.
- 18:16I will give you ice cream at lunch.
- 18:19What? You can't.
- 18:21Bride Yeah, that's cheating. That's absolutely cheating.
- 18:24Rigged. Rigged.
- 18:27I think I can speak for all of us when we all were slightly
- 18:30terrified as to what Aaron was going to suggest.
- 18:33Yeah, Colin said on multiple occasions.
- 18:37Please read the page count. Before anything.
- 18:41It would be very arrond to get to suggest a 700 page book not
- 18:45having looked at at the page count of this thing and
- 18:47expecting all of us to read it. So I, I just, I just want to
- 18:50make it clear, you know, that that's the reason.
- 18:53It's a novella, let me tell you. Let me tell you the page count
- 18:58192. That's that's very respectable
- 19:01breezy and also I think it sounds really interesting as
- 19:04well. Glad that I've got your vote.
- 19:06Well, she didn't say that. She didn't say that.
- 19:08I haven't heard Colin. Yeah, exactly because I'm
- 19:10bringing up with I'm finishing with maybe perhaps the best book
- 19:14on this on this like little list.
- 19:16So for my pick, I'm in the been around category and I have an
- 19:21incredible novel to pitch to everyone.
- 19:24So I've read this book. It was my top book, uh, of 2024
- 19:28that I'd read, Uh, and it also recently was in the Republic of
- 19:32Consciousness, uh, shortlist. So it's also getting a little
- 19:35bit of acclaim. Uh, it's called Mother naked by
- 19:38Glenn James Braun. Uh, very, very intriguing book,
- 19:41uh, a little bit of, uh, history here.
- 19:44So it's set in the city of Durham in 1434.
- 19:47So it's some historical fiction, but it's based on a real, real
- 19:51sort of historical tidbit in that in the records, uh, of the
- 19:55Durham cathedrals like, uh, payment system or payment
- 19:59records, uh, mother naked, uh, was the lowest paid performer in
- 20:04over 200 years, receiving only four pence.
- 20:06Uh, there is this very strange, this is a very, very real thing
- 20:10where this, this person performed this court and they
- 20:14were paid very, very small amount.
- 20:16Anyway, this is Glen James Brown is trying is writing this book
- 20:19from the point of view of Mother Naked this person to explain.
- 20:23Pretty much why they were so, so lowly paid.
- 20:27The book is a is a monologue which I know everyone's probably
- 20:32like. No, but it's so expertly
- 20:34written. It is follows the the character
- 20:38Mother Naked who is a Glee man or a Bard who travels around and
- 20:41tells these different stories between these different towns
- 20:43and villages. He has arrived in Durham and he
- 20:45is talking to the different nobility in Durham.
- 20:50Uh, however, he tells the story of the fell race, the legend of
- 20:53the fell race, a gruesome walking ghost that slaughtered
- 20:56an entire village, uh, 40 years earlier.
- 21:00Uh, and he retells the story and throughout it, uh, you get, uh,
- 21:03a really good sense of like this time period.
- 21:06Umm, but also is the ghost real or was the ghost like, umm, a
- 21:11story and, and a myth itself? Uh, it's quite interesting.
- 21:14It talks about class, talks about religion, uh, about, uh,
- 21:17working people and, and the kind of toils that they have to go
- 21:20through. But the most interesting thing
- 21:22is this book. So when I, I went to a, a talk
- 21:26at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, umm, with Liam
- 21:29James Brown and he, uh, went into TA the, the subject matter
- 21:34was pretty much talking about soothsayers and how, uh,
- 21:36historical fiction can tell the future or how history can tell
- 21:40the future. He basically a lot of the
- 21:41things, the themes and and topics that come up in this book
- 21:44are very, very relatable to, uh, how, how our system of
- 21:49economics, our system of politics works right now.
- 21:52And I think it really, uh, transcends that historical
- 21:54category and feels like a very, very MO modern book.
- 21:57Highly recommend, even if it doesn't get onto our list.
- 22:00I recommend everyone to read this.
- 22:01It is incredible book. I like all your talk about like
- 22:04historical fiction and all that, but is your book in a Dublin
- 22:08accent? Is it in Dublin?
- 22:10It's not. But it is.
- 22:11But it is in the only English. I don't care.
- 22:15I want, I want modern Dublin. So we have a book.
- 22:20My book's based in in futuristic Moscow.
- 22:23Hannah's book is based in modern day of Belfast.
- 22:26Lucy's book is based in 400. BC, Syracuse.
- 22:31But with the modern. Dublin Twist.
- 22:35And Collin's book is based in 1400s Durham, England.
- 22:41OK. What a classic.
- 22:42What a classic. So we're all going to vote for
- 22:46each other's. We're not allowed to vote for
- 22:48for our own choice. So let's let's see which book is
- 22:53already in the lead. This is just for fun.
- 22:56This isn't going to influence the votes so well.
- 22:58Not anything. We should do in alphabetical
- 23:00order so I can go last. No.
- 23:04Well, does anyone want to place their vote first?
- 23:07Sure, if it's not. If you're not voting for mine,
- 23:09I'm not your friend anymore. Well, I'm going to break some
- 23:13hearts here. I'm I'm going to vote for
- 23:16glorious, glorious exploits. You're correct with your vote.
- 23:20Well done. I I just like the the little
- 23:22twist going on there. OK, so so you're going to go
- 23:26with Lucy's Just been crowned category.
- 23:30Yep. OK.
- 23:31So you want to keep it an award-winning streak with this
- 23:35podcast, OK. No, no, but OK.
- 23:40Well, I do have to say that my vote is also going to to be
- 23:44Lucy's choice. What's it called?
- 23:45Glorious exploits What? And it just.
- 23:50The Mozart sold it. The Mozart did very convincing.
- 23:55With how many awards it's won and how how many shortlists it's
- 23:58appeared on and still continues to appear on, can it really be
- 24:03that bad of a book? I think it's worth giving it a
- 24:06read. Also, can I just say before you
- 24:08cast your vote, Hannah, my mum bought me this book, OK.
- 24:12And she never steers me wrong. She no, she always buys me like
- 24:16random books and I'm always like, are you serious with them?
- 24:20And they're always because like the person in Waterstones has
- 24:22been like, this is a good book and mum's gone.
- 24:25Yes, I'll buy my daughter that. And she's never got me lower
- 24:29than a four-star. Wow.
- 24:31Like well. I think you hand out too many
- 24:34four stars. I think you're a bit, you're a
- 24:35bit loose and fast with that Lucy.
- 24:37It's in the name. It's in the name.
- 24:39I'm going to be a bit different and go with Aaron's pick.
- 24:44I was like quite intrigued by it and the pitch got me.
- 24:48So sorry Lucy's mom. I'm knuckling with your pick.
- 24:51But but maybe Lucy's mom will enjoy listening or reading a
- 24:56book. I don't know if she reads along
- 24:58with us or if she just listens. She absolutely hates sci-fi, can
- 25:01I just say. Oh well, maybe she'll be
- 25:03convinced when she's reading a book about Toll from the POV of.
- 25:08Mammoth. So I'm actually deeply torn so,
- 25:13and I'm going to make a bit of a confession.
- 25:16I'm going to confess that there was one in my head before we
- 25:19started that I knew that Colin was going to pick mother naked
- 25:22and I was like, I really, really, really want to read
- 25:24that. And I do really, really want to
- 25:26read it. Aaron really is I am going to go
- 25:34with mother naked but I. Do you all?
- 25:40I do think I like, I would be, I'd be very happy to, to read
- 25:46this mammoth book because I'm like, that's so bizarre.
- 25:51I think it could be good, the Belfast one.
- 25:55I'm just like Belfast today. Shut up, Lucy.
- 25:58Really. Do I have to relive my student
- 26:00day Is mine? I'm like, yes, I'm just telling.
- 26:03People, they're in their 20s. You know how I feel about things
- 26:06like that. People are in their 30s.
- 26:08They're in their 30s, reliving their memories of being
- 26:10students. It's extremely maybe too
- 26:13relatable for. Us.
- 26:13Yeah, it would hurt. I think it's going to hurt.
- 26:16Yeah, they're like long socks was once in and nice short socks
- 26:19and nice back to medium socks. None of you picked my book,
- 26:24Listeners attack. I am going to put my vote for
