- 0:04Speaker 2: 710WOR.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Well, it's the 25th anniversary of 9-11. It's a very, very,
- 0:10Speaker 1: very sad day. I hate this day every year, looking
- 0:14Speaker 1: back and remembering. But you need to do it. Let's
- 0:17Speaker 1: take some calls because people have a lot of memories
- 0:19Speaker 1: and a lot of thoughts on 9-11. Let's go to
- 0:22Speaker 1: Jennifer in New York. Jennifer, how are you doing?
- 0:25Speaker 3: Hey, good morning.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good morning. Nice to speak with you. I've been listening
- 0:29Speaker 2: to you for years. I'm a Rush Limbaugh baby, Bob Grant,
- 0:32Speaker 2: mom and dad, big influence, Brooklyn born and raised. I'm
- 0:37Speaker 2: on my way to a memorial as we speak in Washingtonville,
- 0:40Speaker 2: New York, where a large community of retired and active
- 0:44Speaker 2: firemen and police reside, and a large number were killed
- 0:48Speaker 2: on 9-11 from FD. That day is something. That strikes
- 0:56Speaker 2: a chord in my heart, makes me cry when I
- 0:58Speaker 2: talk about it, but that day made me become a
- 1:01Speaker 2: first responder and become a New York City police detective
- 1:04Speaker 2: to this day.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Followed my father's footsteps as a first responder, retired FD.
- 1:10Speaker 2: That day, I was on my way to college at
- 1:13Speaker 2: SUNY Purchase, and I just crossed the Tappan Zee going
- 1:18Speaker 2: to school thinking I was going to be a teacher.
- 1:20Speaker 2: God help us. Thank God I made the right choice today.
- 1:24Speaker 2: see what's going on in the teaching world as we speak.
- 1:27Speaker 2: You know, students not knowing about 9-11 hurts my soul.
- 1:32Speaker 2: But that day, driving home in this communal daze of
- 1:37Speaker 2: people horrified and frightened together, driving up the New York
- 1:41Speaker 2: City roadways and New York State Thruway to get back home,
- 1:46Speaker 2: I remember seeing the convoy from West Point coming down
- 1:50Speaker 2: the New York State Thruway and My heart leapt out,
- 1:54Speaker 2: and I knew in that moment I needed to change
- 1:56Speaker 2: my life trajectory, and I wanted to help. The only
- 2:00Speaker 2: way I knew how was to become a first responder.
- 2:03Speaker 2: That day inspired me, the loss of those.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, Jennifer.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Sorry to get emotional.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Oh, I understand. But, Jennifer.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I want people to have that passion, that care, and
- 2:13Speaker 2: not forget the Morris Smiths, the Peter Frums. responders killed
- 2:20Speaker 2: and that, hey, I want kids to know about them
- 2:22Speaker 2: and not be dismissed by the defund the police and
- 2:26Speaker 2: the rioters and the poison that's out there where people's
- 2:30Speaker 2: minds are being raked and implanted with false ideas. To
- 2:36Speaker 2: understand the true tragedy but beauty of 9-11 that it
- 2:41Speaker 2: brought so many together in such horror. And I'm sorry
- 2:45Speaker 2: to get emotional. I'm very passionate. It's the Irish in me.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But I've been wanting to call and trying to get
- 2:52Speaker 2: through to you for a long time, but you're a
- 2:54Speaker 2: popular guy. But I'm so grateful to actually get through
- 2:59Speaker 2: on this day.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Well, we're grateful you got through. Jennifer, best call of
- 3:03Speaker 1: the day, maybe of the year, and keep up the
- 3:06Speaker 1: good work. I think you should think about running for
- 3:08Speaker 1: mayor one day. You're a very articulate woman.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Thank you, and please give my best to all those
- 3:15Speaker 2: you may meet that lost loved ones on this day.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I'll always have them in my prayers. Thank you so
- 3:21Speaker 2: much for your time, and God bless America.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Jennifer, very proud to have you in our audience. Call
- 3:27Speaker 1: us again. Take care. Let's go to Dr. Bob in
- 3:31Speaker 1: Long Island. Dr. Bob's a great surgeon. Dr. Bob, how
- 3:34Speaker 1: are you?
- 3:35Speaker 4: I'm good, Mark. Yeah, that was a great call that
- 3:37Speaker 4: just preceded me, and I called really just to honor Dr.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Someone I knew very well, she was really a sister
- 3:44Speaker 4: to me, Captain Kathy Mazza, who I knew as a
- 3:48Speaker 4: cardiovascular scrub nurse at LIJ and then St. Francis Hospital.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Her husband was a New York City policeman and detective,
- 3:57Speaker 4: and she decided to become a Port Authority policewoman. And
- 4:02Speaker 4: for ten years, for nine years, she worked in my
- 4:05Speaker 4: office one day a week just to see the patients
- 4:07Speaker 4: that we had operated on over the years, and she
- 4:09Speaker 4: was a very special person. nurse but then she became
- 4:12Speaker 4: port authority police woman and then the first woman captain
- 4:16Speaker 4: in the port authority police department at the tenth year
- 4:19Speaker 4: and was the commandant uh... at the police uh... the
- 4:23Speaker 4: academy over new jersey on nine eleven i often asked
- 4:27Speaker 4: her didn't she feel naked without a gun she always
- 4:30Speaker 4: had a gun at her ankle i didn't realize it
- 4:33Speaker 4: had been in my office on that day she came
- 4:36Speaker 4: over with the new recruits from jersey in a band
- 4:39Speaker 4: nine eleven went up into the buildings, into the South Tower,
- 4:44Speaker 4: and then brought down people into the lobby. She saw
- 4:46Speaker 4: that the revolving glass doors weren't letting people through fast enough,
- 4:50Speaker 4: so she got people away from the door, shut out
- 4:53Speaker 4: the windows so people could stream out, and she saved
- 4:58Speaker 4: countless lives just with that. She went back up into
- 5:01Speaker 4: the building, and they found her badge and remains about
- 5:04Speaker 4: a month later. I called to honor her. She was
- 5:07Speaker 4: an exceptional person.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And Say her name again.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Captain Kathy Mazza.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Kathy Mazza. All right.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Deloach was her married last name, but that's an extremely
- 5:19Speaker 4: special person. Incredible.
- 5:22Speaker 1: All right, Dr. Bob, great call. Thanks for calling. A
- 5:25Speaker 1: lot of heroes that day. Let's go to John in
- 5:29Speaker 1: Long Beach. John, how are you doing?
- 5:31Speaker 5: Fine good morning mark yes uh you were talking about
- 5:35Speaker 5: the world trade center uh earlier and uh i remember
- 5:39Speaker 5: there was a lawsuit or something they were trying to
- 5:41Speaker 5: determine whether it was one event or two events yeah
- 5:44Speaker 5: and uh i i thought that that was the big
- 5:47Speaker 5: issue not not whether somebody but i thought there was
- 5:50Speaker 5: coverage uh under the policy well you said there was
- 5:53Speaker 5: no yeah but i'm not sure yeah they.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Just couldn't get the insurance companies to pay they just
- 5:57Speaker 1: couldn't pay the claim and then uh Governor Eliot Spitzer,
- 6:01Speaker 1: Eliot Spitzer became governor, and he just finally had to
- 6:04Speaker 1: threaten the insurance companies that they would be banned from
- 6:07Speaker 1: doing business in New York if they didn't pay that claim.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Let's go to Isaac in Rockland. Isaac, how are you doing?
- 6:14Speaker 3: Hi, Mark. Long-time listener.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yes, Isaac.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Just remembering my experience. So I was actually right underneath
- 6:23Speaker 3: the building when the plane hit it. I worked in
- 6:25Speaker 3: the Mercantile Exchange Building in the World Financial Center. When
- 6:29Speaker 3: the second plane, the first plane hit, I was still
- 6:32Speaker 3: in the train. I got out of the train, and
- 6:34Speaker 3: I was walking up to the building when the plane
- 6:36Speaker 3: came from the other side. We all ran down the block,
- 6:40Speaker 3: and then we're all sitting on the street. Remember where
- 6:44Speaker 3: the old Sims was over there?
- 6:47Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, Cy Sims.
- 6:48Speaker 3: It was to the other side.
- 6:50Speaker 1: So you started running?
- 6:51Speaker 3: Even then, people were.
- 6:54Speaker 1: You started running from the building?
- 6:57Speaker 3: Well, when the plane hit it, it looked at that
- 6:58Speaker 3: famous picture of the explosion in the building. I was
- 7:01Speaker 3: like by the foot of the building. We all ran
- 7:03Speaker 3: down the block just to get away from it. Then
- 7:06Speaker 3: we were just standing around. No one knew what to do.
- 7:08Speaker 3: We were just standing on the streets. And when the
- 7:11Speaker 3: building did come, when the first building came down, we
- 7:14Speaker 3: saw a big cloud. It looked like smoke. It was
- 7:16Speaker 3: dust and debris flying down the streets. And then when
- 7:24Speaker 3: it started running again, it was like a panic.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah. All right. Well, great call, Isaac. Thanks for calling. Yeah,
- 7:28Speaker 1: everybody remembers those. Remember that video of the smoke, the
- 7:33Speaker 1: cloud coming and people running from that cloud. Let's go
- 7:36Speaker 1: to Pat in Westchester. Pat, what did you want to say?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Hey, Mark.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Yes.
- 7:40Speaker 6: I was on my way to the office yesterday. 9-11,
- 7:43Speaker 6: and I'm crossing Fifth Avenue right in front of Lord & Taylor.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Remember the old Lord & Taylor?
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yeah, 38.
- 7:49Speaker 6: And I look up, and I literally see the plane
- 7:53Speaker 6: in the sky, and I said to myself, gee, what
- 7:55Speaker 6: the hell's going on? I bet you there's a problem
- 7:57Speaker 6: at LaGuardia, and they're rerouting planes. Because I said, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 6: I was in that area crossing the street, you know,
- 8:04Speaker 6: right around mid-Tominant, and I said, I'd never seen a
- 8:07Speaker 6: plane flying so low right over Fifth Avenue. So literally,
- 8:10Speaker 6: that was the plane that crashed into the World Trade Center.
- 8:13Speaker 1: All right, Pat, thanks for calling. A lot of memories
- 8:17Speaker 1: that day from a lot of people. We'll take some
- 8:20Speaker 1: more calls a little later on. Warner Wolf saw the
- 8:24Speaker 1: whole thing. He was looking out his window. He lived
- 8:26Speaker 1: way downtown with a view of the World Trade Center.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He was live that morning with Imus. We'll talk to
- 8:33Speaker 1: him next. We'll talk to Warner next with some great stories.
- 8:36Speaker 1: So don't go away. It's the 25th anniversary of 9-11.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Mark Simone here on 710WOR.
