- 0:06Now here are the batting orders in the game. First game will be Chicago, Don Kessinger leading off at shortstop.
- 0:12Glenn Beckert at second base. Jim Hickman in right field. Ron Santo at third and now the Dodgers take the field.
- 0:22Cleo James just called up from the cover will play left field. Cleo the ex-Dodger. Billy Williams gets the first game off.
- 0:32Brock Davis will play center. Ernie Banks at first base so Pepitone is still out of action.
- 0:39Chris Cannizzaro the catcher. And Milt Pappas to do the pitching.
- 0:47For the Dodgers, Maury Wills at short. Willie Crawford in left. Willie Davis in center.
- 0:59Richie Allen at third. Wes Parker at first base. Duke Simms catching. Jimmy LeFevre at second.
- 1:12Bill Buckner in right. And Al Downing to do the pitching.
- 1:17And as the Dodgers go on the field on the scoreboard it shows Astros 18, Giants 4.
- 1:23The Astros had a 10 run fourth inning and a 6 run sixth inning as they clobbered the Giants 18 to 4.
- 1:31Larry Durker was the winner and Stone was the loser. No home runs in candlestick today.
- 1:36So the Dodgers have a chance to pick up a lot of ground here in their doubleheader.
- 1:40The Dodgers and the Cubs all set to play too. The Cubs hold the season edge by 4.
- 1:45Al Downing works the first game. Doyle Alexander the nightcap against Juan Pizarro, the veteran lefty just recalled from Tacoma.
- 1:52The umpire sued all of the plates. Steiner, Engel, and Landis on the bases.
- 1:56And you still have plenty of time to come out and take in a lot of baseball here tonight.
- 2:00Games 2 and 3 of the series with the fourth game coming up tomorrow night, the finale of the series.
- 2:06But a big doubleheader here tonight at Dodger Stadium. Okay we're all set. Time to play ball.
- 2:11The Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs now for the play by play. Here's Vin Scully. Vinny?
- 2:15Thank you Jerry. Hi everybody and a very pleasant good evening to you. Welcome to the doubleheader.
- 2:19We hope you'll be out here to join us before what should be a great evening comes to an end.
- 2:23The Dodgers and Cubs into Don Kessinger, Glenn Beckard, and Jim Hickman in that order against Al Downing who has won 3 straight and 6 of his last 7 starts.
- 2:34Downing has 3 shutouts. The latest one that 1-0 matched a P.C. pitch over Dave Roberts in San Diego.
- 2:43And Al with 10 victories and only one other left hander in the National League who has won more.
- 2:48Steve Calden has 11. So Downing trying to catch the big lanky left-hander from St. Louis tonight.
- 2:54Downing ready and the pitch to Kessinger is lifted down the right field line slicing on Buckner but it's high enough.
- 3:00And Billy gets to it for the out just in fair ground. The one pitch and one away and the batter will be Glenn Beckard.
- 3:08As if the Dodgers needed to be spurred on it's all spelled out for them on the message board.
- 3:13The Astros 18 and the Giants 4. The Astros had a 10 run 4th inning, a 6 run 6th inning.
- 3:21The remarkable thing about that game there were no home runs.
- 3:26Glenn Beckard right hand hitting second baseman and a dandy takes high ball 1, 1-0.
- 3:36The Dodgers with the regular cast out there. Downing comes back to the plate 1-0 and gets a strike 1-1.
- 3:42And he sued all of firing behind the plate.
- 3:45The West Parker and Jimmy LaFever, Lori Wills and Richie Allen with Crawford Davis and Buckner in the outfield in a bright sunshiny part of the day.
- 3:53As they drive to right field Buckner backs up and makes the catch right at the chest. So Billy has handled two and we have two down.
- 4:02That'll bring up Jim Hickman, the right fielder.
- 4:08The quiet man from Tennessee hitting 2-28.
- 4:16Duke Sim settling behind the plate and Hickman waits up there with Ron Santo in the clean up spot in the on deck circle.
- 4:23Downing into the wind up and the pitch to Hickman high and away, ball 1.
- 4:27Two men have a little bit of shade from the shadows thrown by the light towers, Richie Allen at third base and Willie Crawford in left field.
- 4:34Everybody else in brilliant sunshine.
- 4:38Downing's 1-0 pitch to Jim Hickman, breaking ball, stayed up and away, ball 2, 2-0.
- 4:45Downing gave the club a big shutout, the tenth for the staff.
- 4:48The Dodgers lead the league in shutouts with ten.
- 4:51The palm ball is swung on and missed, 2-1.
- 5:01Downing with his three shutouts is tied for second place.
- 5:04Steve Blass of Pittsburgh has four.
- 5:06The 2-1 pitch on the way, good breaking ball, swung on and missed right to Marisha Wise, Holtzman and Carlton.
- 5:14Are tied along with Downing with three shutouts apiece.
- 5:17Al, of course, has been quite a story.
- 5:20The 2-2 pitch to Jim Hickman, fast ball, popped in the air to right field and Buckner gets them all.
- 5:26Shielding his eyes from the sun, waiting and makes the catch.
- 5:29So the Cubs are gone on fly balls to Buckner and at the end of the half an inning, Cubs nothing, Dodgers coming up.
- 5:35Schlitz, Milwaukee and the world.
- 5:38Music
- 6:07When you only get one life to live, you live it to the hilt.
- 6:10Because second chances are never handed out.
- 6:13So you go for the best of your life and you take your pleasures where you find them.
- 6:18Like Schlitz, why settle for less?
- 6:21When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer.
- 6:24Music
- 6:35Bottom of the first inning, the Cubs turned away empty handed.
- 6:38The Dodgers coming up in a moment and right-hander, Mil Pappas, loosening up to his battery mate, Chris Canagero.
- 6:43The Cubs with the leather, Ernie Banks at first, Glenn Beckard at second, Don Kessinger at short, Ron Santo at third.
- 6:50In the outfield, Cleon James, who has been called up, is in left field.
- 6:56The center fielder, Brock Davis and the right fielder, Jim Hickman.
- 7:01James, purchased from Tacoma, joined the Cubs tonight, Cleo 30 years old, at one time with the Dodgers.
- 7:08So he's in left field.
- 7:10And Mil Pappas ready.
- 7:13Maury Wills will start things off for the Dodgers.
- 7:16Wills batting 292.
- 7:19Music
- 7:32Maury Wills batting left-handed, and he's about 80 points better from this side of the plate.
- 7:36He's hitting 321 left-handed.
- 7:38Mil Pappas, somewhat like Ferguson Jenkins last night.
- 7:42He delivers low ball one.
- 7:44Jenkins has started 20 games, and he has a decision for every game he started.
- 7:48Jenkins is 12-8.
- 7:50Pappas has started 16 games, and he's 8-8.
- 7:53The pitch is spiked in the count, 1-1.
- 7:56Pappas is making his fourth start against the Dodgers.
- 7:59The first two resulted in complete game victories.
- 8:02The last one he was knocked out at the six innings.
- 8:05The pitch to Wills outside, ball two, 2-1.
- 8:09Pappas in his career against the Dodgers, 9-8.
- 8:13Milt, like Jenkins, a good hitting pitcher, and a veteran.
- 8:18Right-handers, 2-1 pitch.
- 8:19Wills pulls away.
- 8:20It's low and inside, ball three, 3-1.
- 8:23Pappas in 116 innings has walked only 35.
- 8:30Milt arms dangle as he reads Canagero.
- 8:32He's a quick worker, and the 3-1 pitch is over.
- 8:34Strike two, 3-2.
- 8:36I would think you couldn't find a quicker game, especially if both men were on your game,
- 8:41than if the Cubs played the Cardinals and Milt Pappas pitched against Bob Gibson.
- 8:45That would have to be one of the quicker games of the year.
- 8:47Ground ball up the middle, Becker to his right, is up with his throws back to Banks in time.
- 8:51One away, Wills rolls out to the second baseman, and the batter is Willie Crawford.
- 8:57Batting time, number 27, left field, Willie Crawford.
- 9:04Willie Crawford has hit safely in seven of his last nine games.
- 9:10He's at 333 over that span.
- 9:13Interesting to point out the National League East and National League West this year,
- 9:17and of course the West has made a drastic change when the Giants were way out in front by 11 and now come back.
- 9:23Pitch filed away by Crawford, 0-1.
- 9:25Last year, the Dodgers were second to the Reds, and it seemed like we were forever pointing out the fact
- 9:31that if the Dodgers had been playing in the Eastern Division, this would have happened, and that would have happened, etc.
- 9:36It is the Cubs' turn to point out what's going on in the National League East as opposed to the National League West.
- 9:43The Cubs have been playing good ball, they're a hot ball club, playing over 650 in their last 32 games.
- 9:51The pitch to Crawford is high.
- 9:53However, since the 1st of June and playing over 650, the Cubs have picked up only a game and a half on the Blazing Pirates.
- 10:02The 1-1 pitch, Crawford takes high, ball two.
- 10:05The Dodgers have won 22 and lost 12 over the same period.
- 10:10They have picked up seven games on the Giants.
- 10:17The Cubs start tonight nine back of the Pirates.
- 10:20Crawford takes way outside and high, ball three, three and one.
- 10:23The Pirates, somewhat surprisingly, have really pulled out in front of the Mets.
- 10:28The Mets are in a dive. They have now lost seven out of eight.
- 10:31They lost today, so the Mets are technically six games back of the Pirates right now.
- 10:36Here's the 3-1 pitch.
- 10:38Crawford takes a strike, and boy is it a demonstrative strike for Ed Soudal.
- 10:44Ed is an old-fashioned umpire.
- 10:46He really lets you know whether you're sitting behind the plate or in the most remote seat in the bleachers.
- 10:51You watch Eddie Soudal, you know whether it's a ball or a strike.
- 10:543-2 pitch to Willie Crawford is hitting the air off third base foul. Soudal looking over his shoulder as he goes into the shade and makes the catch.
- 11:03Two down.
- 11:07The batter will be Willie Davis.
- 11:15One of the big questions unanswered for either team, the pitch is for tomorrow night.
- 11:22The Cubs have said as soon as they arrived yesterday it would be Bill Hands if he can pitch, but Hands has a blister problem.
- 11:30So Leo says it'll be Hands or somebody. He's not sure.
- 11:33Walter Austin, meanwhile, is not sure since Bill Singer is not going to pitch Friday against the Giants.
- 11:39The pitch to Davis High, ball one.
- 11:42Now it looks like Osteen will pitch Friday night against the Giants.
- 11:46So then who pitches tomorrow night against the Cubs? That will depend, apparently, on what happens in this double header.
- 11:52The pitch fouled away and how much of a workout the boys in the bullpen get, especially a long man like a Joe Mueller.
- 11:59So we're really not sure of the pitches tomorrow night. We just have to wait and see.
- 12:05One and one to count to Willie Davis.
- 12:08Davis hitting.350 is 14 points back of Joe Torey.
- 12:14Boy has he been consistent. He's hit in 52 of the last 60.
- 12:20He takes low, and over that span that's a.356 average.
- 12:24So Willie Davis playing great ball.
- 12:27Pappas ready, and here he comes to one, and it's popped in the air behind the plate.
- 12:33Canazaro coming back to the base of the screen.
- 12:36It's doubtful, and it's on the other side of the screen.
- 12:39Hits the dugout roof and goes back into the crowd.
- 12:43Two and two. The count to Willie Davis.
- 12:47First inning of a Twilight Night double header.
- 12:51The Cubs have an edge on the Dodgers. They've got a little bit of a lead.
- 12:55The Cubs have an edge on the Dodgers. They've won five of nine.
- 12:58These two clubs were as even as you could be last year.
- 13:01They split the 12 and they split six in each part.
- 13:04They've already split six at Wrigley, and we'll see how they finish out at Dodger Stadium with two tonight and tomorrow.
- 13:13Pappas, arms dangling, looks in to get a sign, Milt ready.
- 13:17The two-two pitch to Davis is lifted to straightaway center field.
- 13:20Brock Davis went back, now comes up a half a dozen steps, and makes the catch for the out.
- 13:25So the Dodgers have gone in order, and at the end of an inning, no score.
- 13:29Farmer John is mighty happy to share in bringing you these Dodger broadcasts,
- 13:33and he wants to thank his loyal friends for reaching for his Farmer John all meat wieners,
- 13:37just as fast as he puts them in your store.
- 13:40It seems that the word's getting around that no other wieners can match Farmer John.
- 13:45Farmer John sees to this by putting a little more care and cost into making them.
- 13:49He uses only fresh Eastern corn-fed pork and fresh, lean, juicy, homegrown beef,
- 13:55and he seasons his wieners with expensive natural herbs and spices imported from abroad.
- 14:00Then Farmer John smokes his wieners over real smoke from native Western wood
- 14:05to give them a wonderful Western flavor all their own.
- 14:08If you're still buying some other kind of wieners, all Farmer John asks is that you give his a try and compare.
- 14:14Look for Farmer John wieners in the delicatessen section of your market,
- 14:17or pamper your youngsters and get them the extra-long Farmer John wieners we call Dodger Dogs.
- 14:23Both won gold medals at the California State Fair.
- 14:28At the end of an inning, no score.
- 14:30The first inning of a Twilight Night doubleheader,
- 14:32the Cubs will have Ron Santo, Cleo James, and Brock Davis in that order,
- 14:37and left-hander Al Downing spins them down, each side going out in order in the first inning,
- 14:44and Santo will start it off.
- 14:47In looking at the Cubs' record, you find they start the night nine games back of the Pirates,
- 14:52and in ten games with Pittsburgh, they are 500. They've split the ten.
- 14:58However, there's one glaring stat about the Cubs and why they are so far back.
- 15:04They can't beat the Giants at all.
- 15:07The Giants have beaten the Cubs eight out of nine.
- 15:09They won all six at Candlestick, and the Giants have won two out of three at Wrigley Field.
- 15:14Downing Reddy and the pitch to Santo, low and inside, ball one, one and oh.
- 15:19So the Cubs are nine back, but they are very close to moving in on the Mets who are going backwards.
- 15:26Mets have lost. They lost today, seven out of eight.
- 15:29The one-oh pitch in first right, in the count, one and one to Santo.
- 15:34Ron, the veteran third baseman, hitting 297, 15 home runs, 60 RBIs.
- 15:41Downing comes to him with a fastball that runs away.
- 15:44In the count, ball two, strike one.
- 15:46Second inning, no score.
- 15:48So if you're just coming home from work, take your time.
- 15:51We've got plenty of baseball for you.
- 15:53The two-one pitch to Santo, palm ball that ran away, ball three, three and one.
- 15:59Three and one to Ron Santo.
- 16:08Downing into the windup, and the three-one pitch, fastball is low, ball four.
- 16:15So Al Downing walks somebody, and Cleo James coming up.
- 16:20Downing, you remember, had a one-to-nothing shutout against the San Diego Padres.
- 16:28He had to outpitch Dave Robertson just here.
- 16:30He did not walk a batter there, and prior to that start,
- 16:33in six innings against the Cubs in Wrigley Field, he did not walk a batter.
- 16:37So Downing finally lets one get away.
- 16:39He walks Santo, and here is Cleo James.
- 16:43Cleo at one time with the Dodgers.
- 16:47He raised in Palm Springs, right-hand batter.
- 16:50He was hitting 362 at Tacoma. He was tearing up the Coast League.
- 16:54He takes low, ball one, one and oh.
- 16:59James is 30 years old, right-handed all the way, 5'10", 175 pounders.
- 17:05Played a lot of center field for the Cubs last year.
- 17:08In 100 games, he hit 210.
- 17:11Downing's one-oh pitch to Cleo, taking high.
- 17:14So Al Downing walks Santo, and he's behind now to Cleo James.
- 17:19Two balls, no strikes.
- 17:26Juan Pizarro, a teammate of Cleo's at Tacoma,
- 17:29will pitch the second game against the Dodgers to Oyl Alexander.
- 17:32Now the two-oh pitch. Fastball popped in the air on the right side.
- 17:36Parker fighting the glare. Lafever comes over, but West has it now and makes the catch.
- 17:41So James pops up, one away.
- 17:43Allowing up Brock Davis, a Los Angeles boy playing center field.
- 17:53Brock Davis hitting 323 with 15 runs batted in.
- 18:07Al Downing, left foot on the rubber, looks in to get a sign.
- 18:12Al, 10-4 with the league, decides to go to first base, driving Santo back.
- 18:18The leading pitcher in the National League is Doc Ellis.
- 18:21He was 6-0 in the month of June, and he won last night to give him a 14-3 record.
- 18:26The pitch to Davis is low.
- 18:29He has 12 straight without a defeat and the amazing percentage of 8-24.
- 18:34Larry Durker, who won today, is now 12-4.
- 18:39Don Gullett with the Reds is 9-2.
- 18:42The pitch is one hopper banged right by Wills.
- 18:45He should have had it, but he was handcuffed, and it goes through in the left center.
- 18:49Last night Wills was unable to handle the ball, and it just about meant the ball game.
- 18:54That was a line drive that skidded about just at the left of his hip.
- 18:59And you figure he would at least knock it down, but it went right on through,
- 19:03and since he didn't touch it, the score figures he was completely fooled by it.
- 19:06And it's a base hit for Brock Davis.
- 19:09Dosanto at second, Davis at first, and Ernie Banks the batter.
- 19:21Ernie Banks, hitting 143, he has a half a dozen hits, spelling Joe Pepitono as a bad ankle.
- 19:28Downing delivers a strike.
- 19:30Pep will no doubt see action in the second game if he possibly can
- 19:36against right-handed Doyle Alexander, Joe, of course, a left-handed batter.
- 19:40So Banks is in there playing his first game.
- 19:420-1 the count, 2-on, 1-out, second inning no score.
- 19:46Downing delivers, fastball away.
- 20:01Al Benz of the Ways reading Sims.
- 20:03Now he straightens up and the 1-1 pitch to Ernie Banks.
- 20:07Downing's fastball is filed away in the count 1 and 2.
- 20:11Downing in his last seven ball games has boarded on the brilliant
- 20:14earned run average of less than two in his last seven games.
- 20:19In fact, in his last seven games, he has averaged a little more than two walks a game.
- 20:28Al Downing, who came to the Dodgers in the deal with an outfielder, Andy Cusco, to Milwaukee.
- 20:35And boy, Downing just gets larger and larger as the season progresses.
- 20:39The 1-2 pitch to Banks swung on in this strike three.
- 20:46Two down and the catcher, Chris Cannazero, coming up.
- 20:55Chris Cannazero, right-hand hitting catcher.
- 20:58Cannazero hitting 2-18 as a Cubs.
- 21:04Overall average, 2-0-7.
- 21:11Two on, two out. Second inning, no score.
- 21:14Downing almost in a crouch as he peers in to read Sims.
- 21:18Now Al straightens up and the left-hander delivers high.
- 21:20Ball one, 1-0.
- 21:22Ed Soudal to play down-pire. Mel Steiner at first.
- 21:25Bob Engel at second. Stan Landis at third.
- 21:29Joey Malfatano coaching at first.
- 21:32Peanuts Lowry coaching at third.
- 21:37The 1-0 pitch to Cannazero.
- 21:39Downing deals. Fastball hit by the mound down to LaFever,
- 21:42who shovels quickly to Wills for a force on the charging Davis.
- 21:45And the inning is over.
- 21:47No runs are hit. Two left. And at the end of an inning and a half, no score.
- 21:54The good life. That's still the way of life in a great hotel.
- 22:02A superbly trained staff that respects your taste and brings you the best.
- 22:06Part of the best are Canada Dry Mixers.
- 22:09The better taste of Canada Dry Club Soda, Tonic Water, Bitter Lemon, and Ginger Ale.
- 22:28Better Mixers Mix Better. At Canada Dry we mix better mixers.
- 22:32Better mixers mix better Canada Dry Canada Dry.
- 22:40Make better mixers Canada Dry.
- 22:50Bottom of the second inning, no score.
- 22:52Downing getting out of a little jam in the top half.
- 22:55One of the Dodgers will have Richie Allen, Wes Parker, and Duke Sims against Mill Pappas.
- 23:05Richie Allen has his average up to 268.
- 23:09That would be just about the highest since he has been hitting at the start of the year.
- 23:13Remember he got off to a very poor start.
- 23:15Then he hung around the 250 plateau for quite some time, got up to 260,
- 23:20then dropped back down again around 255, and now very close to 270, 268, 11 home runs, 51 runs batted in.
- 23:30Of course Richie is a fellow with a lifetime batting average of 297,
- 23:34and Walter Alston has just said that he'll be patient because he knows he can do it.
- 23:38Well he's starting to build it. He takes low ball one, one and oh.
- 23:41Richie averages close to 25 home runs a year,
- 23:44although that should change a little bit now that he's playing at Dodger Stadium instead of County Mac.
- 23:51One and oh to count, Pappas comes back to the plate and bounces short hop by count of zero, ball two.
- 24:01Richie Allen has hit safely in 17 of the past 21 games, so he's been on a tear.
- 24:07He's hit 314 over that span, the two old pits, low ball three.
- 24:12And in the last 21 games, Allen has driven in 16 runs.
- 24:19Richie meanwhile has done very well at third base.
- 24:23Here's the three old pitch on the way, a fastball for strike three and one.
- 24:27You won't get Rich waiting for walks from Milt Pappas, that's for sure.
- 24:34Milt Ruddy and a three-one pitch. Here's a fastball inside, and that'll do it for Allen.
- 24:40Richie is more disgusted looking I think than any other hitter in the National League.
- 24:44When he gets a walk, it's almost an affront to his hitting.
- 24:48He hates to walk. He slowly goes down to first base, and the batter will be Wes Parker.
- 24:59Parker with a seven-game hitting streak.
- 25:03Of course, he hasn't had a chance to pick up many ribbies since Allen has been hot.
- 25:06He's been cleaning his place. Wes, it's one back off Pappas' glove.
- 25:10He picks it up and the play has to go to first.
- 25:12If he handles it cleanly, he might add a double play.
- 25:15Instead of one three play to get Allen to second base, and with one out, Duke Sims coming up.
- 25:25Duke Sims hitting 268. He enjoyed a fine series at Candlestick.
- 25:32Duke with two home runs, 14 runs batted in.
- 25:44Pappas bends to the way, thinking over his pitches.
- 25:47Head down as he stares at the dirt.
- 25:49Remind you a little bit of the way Larry Jackson pitched for many years with the Cardinals, Fills, and Cubs.
- 25:54Jackson would stand on the mound and look like he was going to be ill.
- 25:57A change to Sims is high, ball one.
- 26:01Larry's chin would be on his chest.
- 26:03It looked like he just couldn't possibly make another pitch, but he was deep in concentration.
- 26:08Pappas doing the same thing.
- 26:10One ball and no strikes.
- 26:11The Duke Sims trying to pick up Richie Allen.
- 26:14One out, second inning, no score.
- 26:16Note ready and here he comes and it's fouled away.
- 26:20One and one.
- 26:24Billy Williams, the fine left fielder for the Cubs who has a nine game hitting streak, is resting the first game.
- 26:30Remember when Williams never missed a game?
- 26:33Well, he has missed none so far.
- 26:36Eighty-one games he has played in eighty of them.
- 26:39But he's going to rest his first one against Downing and he'll be back in there against Doyle Alexander.
- 26:47Pappas reading signs, Allen off the bag.
- 26:50Milled ready and delivers and Sims takes high and away.
- 26:52Ball two, two and one.
- 26:56Pappas came to Baltimore with half a season, actually only three games and eleven innings in the minors.
- 27:13The pitch to Sims is popped in the air.
- 27:16Banks calls in front of Becker, comes in on the grass and handles it for the second out.
- 27:21Let's pause for station identification.
- 27:23This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 27:39Jimmy Lefebvre checks in with two out, Richie Allen at second base, no score in the ballgame.
- 27:45Lefebvre hitting 275, not too much to choose from from either side of the plate.
- 27:50Hitting 279 left-handed, 268 right-handed, takes outside ball one.
- 27:56There's a little difference in power, but he's had twice as many at-batch as left-handed batters.
- 28:01He has eight home runs, five of them coming this way against right-handers.
- 28:07One and out of Jim Lefebvre.
- 28:09On deck, Bill Buckner.
- 28:11The next one is low, ball two, two and all.
- 28:13Don Kessinger doing a pretty good job of bird-dogging Richie Allen to cut down his lead.
- 28:20South Hill around to right, and Banks deep and Becker out on the rim on the edge of the grass.
- 28:27So playing Lefebvre to pull.
- 28:29Tap is ready, here he comes, and it's taken for a strike at the knees.
- 28:33Outside corner, two and one.
- 28:42Rodgers and Cubs in their 10th meeting of the year, 10 of the 12 scheduled, and the first of two tonight.
- 28:50Now the 2-1 pitch.
- 28:51Lefebvre swings and doesn't get it.
- 28:53Quick slider on the hands and the count two and two.
- 28:58Eddie Soudal wants to examine the ball, so time out for the moment.
- 29:03Ed checking it very carefully and flips it to Pappas.
- 29:07Two and two, the count to Jim Lefebvre.
- 29:10Richie Allen who walked at second base with two out.
- 29:13Giants lost today in case you missed it.
- 29:15Lost hardly tells the story.
- 29:17The Astros beat them 18 to four.
- 29:21The 2-2 pitch.
- 29:22Lefebvre pokes his foul off third trying to go with the pitch and hit it upstairs.
- 29:27So it's still two and two.
- 29:30The Giants were hit by lightning.
- 29:32The Dodgers had a 10-run inning against them, and Houston had a 10-run fourth inning today.
- 29:39Two and two, the count to Jim Lefebvre.
- 29:46Now the pitch to Jimmy.
- 29:47Strike three, a little slider got the inside corner and down he goes.
- 29:51No runs, no hits.
- 29:52The man left at second base.
- 29:53At the end of two, no score.
- 29:55Here's how to get a brand new tire for 76 cents and not just any tire, one that comes with a 30,000 mile treadwear guarantee.
- 30:02First of all, drive into your participating Union 76 service station.
- 30:06Then buy three Union 76 four-star tires.
- 30:09Your Union 76 neither will sell you the fourth tire for just 76 cents plus federal excise tax of $2.37 to $3.27.
- 30:17Now, maybe you don't think of a service station as the right place to buy tires.
- 30:21Well, Union 76 is out to change your mind about that.
- 30:24The four-star is a real rugged tire.
- 30:26That's why Union 76 can give the four-star one of the best tire guarantees you can get.
- 30:30They guarantee the treadwear for 30,000 miles on your family car.
- 30:34In case the tread on your four-star wears out before 30,000 miles, your Union dealer will replace the tire and charge you only that portion of the then current exchange prices plus federal excise tax, which represents mileage driven.
- 30:46So see your Union 76 dealer now for the great deal on a set of four-star tires.
- 30:50You'll find out why he's the most underestimated tire dealer in America, and you'll find that the spirit of 76 lives in Union Oil.
- 30:56Two innings, no score.
- 30:57In fact, we've only had one hit in the ballgame.
- 30:59That was a single by Brock Davis.
- 31:02Now as we go to the third, Al Downing and Mill Papas battling it out.
- 31:06And for more play by play, here's Gary Doggett.
- 31:08All right, Vinnie, Papas starts it off.
- 31:10He's a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 31:11He has six hits in 40 at-batch this year.
- 31:15And Papas will be followed by Kessinger.
- 31:17No score.
- 31:18Al Downing all set to go.
- 31:23Papas right-hander.
- 31:27Bright sunshine and only the left field area now getting the shadows.
- 31:33Willie Crawford still standing in the sun.
- 31:36Here's Downing's windup in the pitch on the way as a fastball for a strike, 0-1.
- 31:41Dodgers and the Cubs, a doubleheader.
- 31:43They've each played two doubleheaders this year.
- 31:46Cubs have won one and lost one.
- 31:47The Dodgers have won one and split one.
- 31:52Going to the high fly ball defender.
- 31:53Willie Davis right there.
- 31:54Comes in a step.
- 31:56Waits, makes the catch for the out.
- 31:57Willie was playing him almost perfectly then for that high fly ball.
- 32:01One down, Don Kessinger at bat.
- 32:03Slide to right field his first time up.
- 32:06Downing in the first game against Papas.
- 32:08Second game, Pizarro and Alexander.
- 32:14Kessinger, switch hitter, hitting from the right side.
- 32:17Downs batting average is 289, two home runs and 22 runs batted in.
- 32:28Empire Soudal rubs up the ball, gives it back to Downing.
- 32:33Kessinger hitting better from the right side than the left side.
- 32:35He's hitting 313 at the right hand hitter.
- 32:42Lowry coaching at third and Joe Amalpatano in the first base line.
- 32:46One man out, now the wind up and here's the pitch.
- 32:49Foul back to the screen, strike one.
- 32:56Still plenty of time to come out and see a lot of baseball here this evening.
- 32:58First game of the doubleheader and we're only in the third inning now.
- 33:02We've got all of this one and the second game to go.
- 33:06The Dodgers began this game three games back as the Giants lost this afternoon.
- 33:13The Giants and coming on fast now right behind.
- 33:16Here's the wind up and the pitch.
- 33:18A pie for a ball, one and one.
- 33:21One ball, one strike.
- 33:27Al Downing checking signs again, goes into the wind up and delivers.
- 33:30Fastball to slow ball two, two and one.
- 33:33Al with a fine record this year, 10 wins and four losses and an earned run average of 2.28.
- 33:40That certainly qualifies the comeback player of the year with that record.
- 33:44Next pitch is outside, ball three.
- 33:46Fastball failed, three and one.
- 33:49Downing beat the Cubs in Chicago, six to four.
- 33:55This is his third start against him, he had one no decision.
- 33:58Three and one.
- 34:00Al ready, delivers and it's strike two.
- 34:03Three and two now to Kessinger.
- 34:08Tonight and tomorrow night our last visit with the Cubs this year will be all through with Chicago.
- 34:14Rather strange before the all-star break.
- 34:16Curve, strike three, calls Kessinger-Newark.
- 34:19So he struck him out with a curveball and that's strike out number two for Al Downing.
- 34:26Here's Glenn Beckert at bat, slide to right field his first time up.
- 34:31Beckert hitting 3.48, has one home run and 22 runs batted in.
- 34:38The Cubs move on to San Diego from Los Angeles and they will play two doubleheaders in three days there.
- 34:45Pitch comes high for a ball, one ball and no strikes.
- 34:47So the Cubs are going to be a little short on pitching here for the next few days.
- 34:51Doubleheader tonight and a doubleheader Friday and a doubleheader again on Sunday.
- 34:55One ball, no strikes.
- 34:57Curveball, tap foul off third base.
- 35:00Rolls to the Dodger dugout and the count is one ball, one strike to Beckert.
- 35:05Cubs won last night 3-1.
- 35:07They now lead the Dodgers here in Dodger Stadium two games to one.
- 35:14Beckert, right hand batter, number 18.
- 35:171-1 count, pitch on the way.
- 35:19Bounce over the mound in front of second base.
- 35:21Wills a nice big hop, flip across and time and the inning is over.
- 35:25So Beckert grounds out short to first.
- 35:27That's all for the Cubs.
- 35:28And the score at the end of two and a half minutes to play,
- 35:31Dodgers nothing and the Cubs nothing.
- 35:33Making out a baseball lineup is easy compared to figuring out the weekly shopping list.
- 35:37What meats to serve for supper?
- 35:39That's the big question.
- 35:40One meat some homemakers tend to overlook is sausage.
- 35:43Oh sure, they serve Parmesan sausage for breakfast,
- 35:46but you know it's also a hearty, wholesome main meal meat too.
- 35:50Parmesan makes his sausage with all the best meat, not just the trimmings.
- 35:54So it's extra nourishing and satisfying.
- 35:57He uses only finest eastern corn-fed pork,
- 35:59and it's fresher than fresh because it's dressed fresh right here in the West.
- 36:03Then Parmesan seasons the sausage to an old-time Western recipe
- 36:07to give a wonderful Western flavor to every lean, luscious morsel.
- 36:11And when you compare Parmesan sausage with other meats,
- 36:14you'll discover how inexpensive it is.
- 36:16Yes, Parmesan sausage has everything going for it,
- 36:19whether you serve it for breakfast or supper.
- 36:21Parmesan sausage, gold medal winner at the California State Fair.
- 36:24And remember, it's the easternmost in quality and the westernmost in flavors.
- 36:29Parmesan.
- 36:32Bill Pappas concluding his warm-up talk with the Dodgers.
- 36:35Come to bat now with Buckner, Downing, and Wills to face the veteran right-hander.
- 36:39Buckner hitting 287.
- 36:41He had a hot week last week and he's tailed off a little bit,
- 36:44so Billy's trying to get it going again.
- 36:47Buckner playing right field, three home runs, 22 runs batted in.
- 36:52So Billy is in now.
- 36:54They play him a little bit to the right in the outfield.
- 36:56Fanto is up at third, Banks not too deep at first.
- 36:59Pappas ready to pitch.
- 37:00Swung on a drive in the right field, well hit.
- 37:02Hickman going over and makes the catch for the out.
- 37:04So a line drive out by Buckner to right field.
- 37:07One away, the batter will be Downing.
- 37:10Downing, a good-hitting pitcher, has an average of 217.
- 37:14He has 10 hits and four runs batted in.
- 37:17Ten to serve is this, has to go on for doubles.
- 37:20Downing coming on to face Pappas.
- 37:27First game of the doubleheader here at Dodger Stadium.
- 37:30Downing waiting now as the pitch comes in for a strike.
- 37:35No, Pappas works in a hurry.
- 37:38Big right-hander checking signs of catcher Chris Cannadaro.
- 37:410-1 the count.
- 37:43Now the pitch on the way, off-speed low for ball on the count 1-1.
- 37:48Sandoval at third, Kessinger at short, Becker at second, Banks at first.
- 37:52James in left, Davis in center, and Hickman is in right for Chicago.
- 37:57Cannadaro catching and Pappas is the pitcher.
- 38:001-1 count, Downing waiting again.
- 38:03Swung in a foul, that bounced up and hit Al,
- 38:05and I think it hit him on the side of the face.
- 38:08Hit him on the right ear, around the neck perhaps.
- 38:11So Al walks out of there,
- 38:14and Eddie Soudal, the play-dumper, comes over to see about him,
- 38:17and he got hit with his foul ball that hit the ground,
- 38:19and bounced back up and hit him in the ear.
- 38:21I think he's all right.
- 38:22Danny Ozark comes down, and also trainer Bill Bueller coming out to check with him.
- 38:27Wow, that one hit him right around the ear on the right side.
- 38:31He wears an ear flap on the left side.
- 38:34Ironically enough, the ball came up and hit him on the right side.
- 38:37He's okay, going to stay in.
- 38:40Stung a little bit.
- 38:45Al backed out before getting ready to go.
- 38:47One ball, two strikes to the Dodger pitcher Al Downing.
- 38:52Now the pitch.
- 38:54Bounced toward shortstop.
- 38:56Santa comes in, short hop, and throws in time.
- 38:58Santa's cutting in front of Kessinger to make the play.
- 39:02Two down, the batter will be Maury Wills,
- 39:04and Maury will wait a moment for Al to get back and have a seat.
- 39:07Wills rounded out his first time up.
- 39:09The Dodgers do not have a hit against Pappas.
- 39:12They have one batter on on a walk, Allen.
- 39:15The Cubs have one hit a ground single by Davis, just under Wills' glove.
- 39:25Maury Wills coming up.
- 39:38Pappas ready, and the wind up in the pitch on the way to Maury.
- 39:40Fastball first strike, 0-1.
- 39:43Santa plays in on the grass, banks even with the bag at first.
- 39:46The outfield shifts to the left against Maury.
- 39:48They gap him in right center.
- 39:50Here's the pitch.
- 39:51Low with a breaking ball.
- 39:52One ball, one strike.
- 39:54First game of the Twineye Doubleheader.
- 39:59Our second doubleheader at home this year is a curve low for a ball,
- 40:04and the count is 2-1, two balls and one strike.
- 40:12Time called now.
- 40:13Played on par with Pseudal once to check the baseball.
- 40:29Now the pitch on the way to Maury.
- 40:31Breaking ball inside, ball free, and it's 3-1.
- 40:39Wills waiting too out, 3-1 count Crawford on deck.
- 40:41Pappas ready, delivers.
- 40:43Way outside, he walked him in, so Wills is on and Crawford will be coming up.
- 40:49Willie Crawford to left field.
- 41:05Here's Crawford stepping in now.
- 41:16Pitch comes in for a strike to Willie Crawford.
- 41:22Wills on it first.
- 41:23Crawford fouled out his first time up.
- 41:29Next pitch is outside for ball, 1-1.
- 41:32This is the second doubleheader for the Dodgers at home.
- 41:34They will have one more scheduled at home, a Sunday doubleheader in September
- 41:37against Atlanta, September the 19th.
- 41:451-1 the count, Wills going.
- 41:46Here's Canna's arrow, throw down, he's face.
- 41:48The ball goes in the center field.
- 41:50Wills is up and will hold on now.
- 41:52He was pinned there by Kessinger, could not get out from under the pile.
- 41:56And so he could not advance the third.
- 42:01As Brock Davis came in quickly, it will be a stolen base for Wills.
- 42:05The Maury steals it.
- 42:11That's his eighth of the year.
- 42:13He has been caught six times.
- 42:17All right, Crawford waiting now with a 2-1 count, trying to get the run in.
- 42:22Dodgers still looking for their first base hit.
- 42:25Wills is second to pitch.
- 42:27Look at the left center field, Davis coming fast for it.
- 42:29A running diving catch.
- 42:31He took a base hit away from Willie.
- 42:34Racing in and skidding to his knee to handle the ball for the out to retire the side.
- 42:39So a fine play by center fielder Brock Davis.
- 42:42No runs, no hits, one left from the score at the end of three innings of play.
- 42:47Cubs nothing, Dodgers nothing.
- 42:52They are just figuring out the weekly shopping list.
- 42:54What meats to serve for supper?
- 42:56That's the big question.
- 42:57One meat some homemakers tend to overlook is sausage.
- 43:00Oh sure, they serve Parmesan sausage for breakfast,
- 43:03but you know it's also a hearty wholesome main meal meat too.
- 43:07Parmesan makes his sausage with all the best meat, not just the trimming.
- 43:11It's extra nourishing and satisfying.
- 43:13He uses only finest eastern corn fed pork,
- 43:16and it's fresher than fresh because it's dress fresh right here in the west.
- 43:20Then Parmesan seasons the sausage to an old time western recipe.
- 43:24They give a wonderful western flavor to every lean, luscious morsel.
- 43:27And when you compare Parmesan sausage with other meats,
- 43:30you'll discover how inexpensive it is.
- 43:32Yes, Parmesan sausage has everything going for it,
- 43:35whether you serve it for breakfast or supper.
- 43:37Parmesan sausage, gold medal winner at the California State Fair.
- 43:41And remember, it's the easternmost in quality and the westernmost in flavors.
- 43:46Parmesan.
- 43:49No scores, we go along into the fourth inning.
- 43:51More play, let's go back to the finish.
- 43:52All right, Jerry, for the Cubs it'll be Jim Hickman,
- 43:55the number three hitter in the lineup, followed by Ron Santo, and then Cleo James.
- 44:01Al Downing, taken up by his own foul ball there in the third inning,
- 44:04about ready to go to work in the fourth.
- 44:07Shadows now starting to reach out and take over parts of the field
- 44:11as Downing delivers big, slow curve, first strike, going one.
- 44:16Hickman flied to right field in the first inning when Buckner handled three out there.
- 44:23Downing comes back with a strike one pitch and a palm ball is fouled away in the count, 0-2.
- 44:28Willie Crawford is faithfully ensconced in the shadow and left now.
- 44:33Davis and Buckner still fighting it.
- 44:36Richie Allen is in a wedge of shade, covering third.
- 44:410-2, the count of Jim Hickman.
- 44:45Downing into the lineup and the left-hander delivers,
- 44:47high and inside and Hickman drops to his right knee, not taking any chances.
- 44:501-2, the count.
- 44:55Dodgers try to win their 49th game.
- 44:59Downing delivers, palm ball is a one-hopper banged into our field, a base hit for Jennings.
- 45:04So Hickman makes a turn and holding and the throw comes into will.
- 45:08That's hit number two for the Cubs. The Dodgers do not have a hit.
- 45:11And the batter is Ron Santo.
- 45:21Santo walked in the second inning.
- 45:25Ron is a stand to the play, hitting 297 with 15 home runs.
- 45:29Back to Chicago.
- 45:32The strike one pitch to Santo, high and outside, 1-1.
- 45:38We're in the fourth, no score, so Al Downing in another one of those things.
- 45:42Last time up, he had to go and wait until the ninth inning when Willie Davis got a run over.
- 45:47And the Dodgers beat San Diego 1-0 and he scored us in the fourth today.
- 45:53The one-one pitch to Santo is popped in the air.
- 45:57Will's going out. Let's watch him now and see what he does in this count of a play.
- 46:01Waiting, makes it, drops it, picks it up, throws to a feeder who's going to run over and tag Hickman.
- 46:07And this looks like a repeat. Hickman was running on his own.
- 46:10That could be a double play if they got Santo.
- 46:13If Hickman just went, we'll watch the umpires.
- 46:17If Santo was out on the pop fly, Hickman would be out for running on his own.
- 46:22And the play that we're not very happy with, but it's the rules.
- 46:26The roach is coming out. The baserunner runs on his own now.
- 46:31And they're going to have to explain it.
- 46:33If Will caught the ball and then intentionally dropped it, if the baserunner is puckered into it, he's out.
- 46:40That's the rule. It is the worst rule.
- 46:42It's a rule that we got quite hot about, I guess, so it sounded when we were playing San Diego and Will did it.
- 46:49But the one thing that does seem so unfair, you are asking the baserunners to realize that Will has intentionally dropped the ball.
- 46:58So very simply, the rule states that if an infielder intentionally dropped the pop fly, the batter is out and the baserunner is running on his own risk.
- 47:07So if it is ruled that Will's intentionally dropped it, the batter, Santo, who hit it, is out and Hickman was running on his own.
- 47:15Of course, I do think that baseball ought to take this rule out of the books, but it's in the books and there's not much they can do about it.
- 47:22Now Steiner is explaining it to the lion and you know what? There's not a thing he can do about it.
- 47:27They have taken the teeth away from Leo the lion.
- 47:31Now if the umpires just rule that Will should not catch the ball, then it would just be a force play on Hickman.
- 47:38So Santo is standing there.
- 47:40But if the umpires have ruled that Will caught the ball, then it's a double play. There's nothing they can do about it.
- 47:46Because when Hickman started running, he was running on his own.
- 47:49And I agree with you, it's a miserable rule, but it's there.
- 47:52And of course, you give Will a lot of credit for understanding it and the umpires are handcuffed.
- 47:58There's no way the umpires can inform the runner. That's what I think is so unfair about it.
- 48:03The runner is watching. He can't tell that Will has intentionally dropped it.
- 48:08But the Cubs are done.
- 48:10And all they have to do is talk to Preston Gomez and the rest of the San Diego Padres.
- 48:15And that would be the second scalp dangling from Will's belt.
- 48:20It'll be a double play and it's just a matter of Leo finally swallowing it.
- 48:25And boy, to say, well I want to curse you, I say about a bone in the throat.
- 48:29Well this rule is, believe me, a bone in the throat of baseball. It should be thrown out.
- 48:33But it's in the book. So the double play isn't a thing they can do about it.
- 48:37We went round and round about it with our Barlett Quartet here and the San Diego Padres.
- 48:44And now with Rocha. So here goes Sando. It's a double play and the Cubs go back to the gaga.
- 48:50I just hope that various people who can do it, they're not going to listen to some radio announcer beat his gums and say, hey we ought to change the rules.
- 49:02But boy it's about time the fellas who make the game fix. The officials sat down and said, hey this rule has an odor about it.
- 49:10It's not fair. It's not fair to ask the umpires to read intent when a pitcher throws close to a batter.
- 49:17Then why should a baserunner have to read intent on a pop fly to an infielder?
- 49:22It's the second time the Dodgers have gotten away with it in a little more than a week.
- 49:26And the lion has gotten his tail tied in a knot and he goes back to the gaga. It's a double play. The double play, 6-4.
- 49:34Wills is the guy, he's the wizard. He's one of the few players in the league.
- 49:39In fact in watching everybody he was the only player in the league who realized the runner runs on his own.
- 49:45And that's the second runner he's gotten. So two down and the batter now is Cleo James. He pokes one to right field. That's a base hit.
- 49:54Buckner comes over and gets it. Cleo a turn and a holding.
- 49:58So if you're scoring that's a double play. Wills handles the pop fly and throws to the feeder who tags Hickman.
- 50:05Hickman didn't have to run. But the rotten part of the rule is there's no way that they can inform him in time.
- 50:14Two down and the batter is blocked. So if you're scoring the double play is 6-4.
- 50:23Then James follows with a single to right.
- 50:26And here's Brock Davis who's single just under Wills' glove in the second inning.
- 50:31Downing Ruddy and delivers. Fastball hit off the plate. A big stopper to the receivers.
- 50:35He has to hurry to get a guy like Brock and he does. And the inning is over thanks to the heavy play by Wills.
- 50:40Thanks to a loophole in the rules. And the Cubs are turned away. No runs. Two hits. One left.
- 50:47The end of three and a half and he's no score.
- 50:55You can own a lovely two bedroom Katrina cabin in the pine without spending a lot of money.
- 51:04Without being stuck out in the middle of nowhere. For $14,450 this could be your summer home away from the city or your year-round residence.
- 51:13You can own both land and Katrina cabin for just $14,450.
- 51:18You're a few miles from Flagstaff where you'll find fine shopping, restaurants and convenient toys.
- 51:24Katrina Village. A master plan community. Smack dab in the middle of the most wonderful country ever.
- 51:30Fresh clear spring water. Smart free skies. The smell of clean air.
- 51:35There's fishing, hiking, swimming, hunting, horseback riding.
- 51:38Teen is believing in Katrina Village. A very pleasant two hours north of Phoenix on the Black Canyon Highway.
- 51:44Look for the sign that says Katrina Village.
- 51:47This is Teen Tumpty.
- 51:52Bottom of the fourth inning. No score in the ballgame. The Cubs have been decoyed by the swim flam man, Maury Wills.
- 52:00And now Willie Davis, Richie Allen and Wes Parker will be coming up with the Dodgers in the fourth.
- 52:06Walter Alston played on fire that two-dollar discussion. But of course, Alston can say he should have been here last week.
- 52:12The Dodgers rehearsed that play against San Diego.
- 52:16And on that high pop fly, as Wills backed out, it was the first shot he had.
- 52:20Watch what he'll do with this. And sure enough, he baited Hickman.
- 52:26The batter, Willie Davis. No score. Bottom of the fourth inning.
- 52:31Peanuts Lowry in the Cub dugout. Planing to repel some of the young infield is exactly what happened.
- 52:36Tapas delivers. Willie runs up the bunt but takes the strike instead on the count of one.
- 52:45No runs. Three hits for Chicago. No runs. No hits for the Dodgers.
- 52:50Tapas ready. Milk strike one-fifth.
- 52:53Popping the air around the plate. Canagero in foul ground. Throws his mask away. And Rick makes the catch. One away.
- 53:02And the batter is Richie Allen, who walked in the second inning.
- 53:18Mill Papas has not allowed a hit for three and a third. We have no score on the ballgame. Downing has allowed a couple of singles.
- 53:28Now Papas ready and delivers and it's locked in the right field.
- 53:31Base hit for Richie. Over to get it as Hickman on two hearts.
- 53:34So a one-out single by Richie Allen breaks the spell and the batter will be Wes Parker.
- 53:44Wes Parker.
- 53:54Wes Parker. Quick hitting first baseman batting left-handed.
- 53:58Papas ready and deals and that's a strike inside corner. A throw to first. Allen back to the bag. 0-1.
- 54:14Papas again straightens out. The strike one-fifth off-speed and away. In the count one ball and one strike.
- 54:21Duke Sims in the on-dack circle. One-out fourth inning no score. The Chubs with three hits. The Dodgers with one hit.
- 54:28First to two. Papas deals. Parker takes high. Wes with a seven-game hitting streak. He's back to the box in the second inning.
- 54:36If you are driving home or in case you haven't heard about it, the Astros beat the Giants today 18-4.
- 54:44Parker hits the ground ball at shortstop. Kessinger to Becker. The throw to first. Not in time.
- 54:56Kessinger had to wait for Becker. Glenn was playing Parker to pull. He was deep in the hole on the right side.
- 55:03And of course while Kessinger waited for Becker to run to second base, Parker was running to first so they lost the chance of the double play.
- 55:10Simple course and here's Duke Sims. Sims popped up in the second inning. He's 0-1.
- 55:27Cavish. Danny Hothel rather for the moment while Sims, fusses with the dirt, had a look at Danny Ozarks.
- 55:37Parker does not do too much base stealing. He's three out of five. The fifth, low and away ball one, one and oh.
- 55:50No score. Bottom of the fourth, two out. Giants lost at Augustine to get rich today.
- 55:56Against the good club, the Cubs, who have been playing very well. Parker goes. Sims takes the strike. The throw down.
- 56:03He's stolen it. He was way around the tag by Kessinger. For Parker, that is his fourth stolen base.
- 56:12West stole eight last year and then two years in a row he had only four.
- 56:21West averages about seven stolen bases a year in his big league career.
- 56:26So he's there to be picked up now. One and one to count.
- 56:34One and one to count to Duke Sims with two out. Parker at second base. No score in the fourth.
- 56:41Cavish at the belt, no delivers and as a line drive to the right, base hit down the line.
- 56:47Parker will score and the Dodgers lead one to nothing.
- 56:59Before the fever, let's pause for a second to identify the Missical Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 57:17One to nothing in favor of the Dodgers.
- 57:20Alan Singled with one out. Parker forced him and stole second and Duke Sims singled to right to pick him up.
- 57:29Now Lefebvre at the plate and Cavish steals and it's flung on a miss.
- 57:33Jimmy struck out in the second and in.
- 57:37One nothing Dodgers in the fourth.
- 57:41Cavish head down thinking over his pitches. Sims a short lead held on by Banks.
- 57:47Lefebvre chased a bad pitch and didn't get it. The back of Canazaro's mitt hit the dirt in the right hand hitter's box.
- 57:54Jimmy backed out for a moment. Oh and two to count.
- 57:58The mound is cut in half by Shadows and Suns.
- 58:03And fingers of shadow go from the mound over towards first base.
- 58:07The strike two pitch outside ball one, one and two.
- 58:22Here's the one two pitch on the way. Lefebvre swings and misses so Pappas ties in newt around him again.
- 58:27That's the second time he's struck Jimmy out.
- 58:29But the Dodgers get a run on two hits and at the end of four, Dodgers one, Cavs nothing.
- 58:34We all know what low lead gasoline will do for the year.
- 58:37It's a practical easy way for all of us to do something about solution.
- 58:42All right Marge your bags are in the trunk. You have the map the Union 76 dealer gave you?
- 58:46Really George I'm only going to be gone three days.
- 58:48I know Marge but it pays to be careful. You have the Union 76 credit card?
- 58:52Yes George.
- 58:53Now let's see. You'll call me as soon as you get this.
- 58:54Yes George.
- 58:55Now watch the fuel gauge and the oil and the Union dealer fill the windshield washer and check the tires. Everything's fine.
- 59:00I know it is George. Now relax. It's only a 75 mile drive.
- 59:04I know Marge but you can't be too careful. People just don't have the same old spirit nowadays.
- 59:08And remember Marge if anything at all seems to be going wrong, stop at a Union 76 station. They'll help.
- 59:16That's right. Whenever you need driving help, be it repair work or only direction, stop at a Union 76 service station.
- 59:23That's why we're there to help you. And we don't act like we're doing your favor either.
- 59:27Because we feel you're doing us a favor just by stopping in.
- 59:30George what do you plan to do those three days I'm gone?
- 59:33Eat out of luck.
- 59:34I love your spirit.
- 59:35The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
- 59:38Through four innings the Dodgers leading the Cubs 1-0. One run, two hits for the Dodgers.
- 59:43No runs, three hits and no errors for the Cubs. Al Downing and Milt Pappas.
- 59:48The second game will feature the veteran and the rookie.
- 59:52Ron Fisaro will be pitching for the Cubs and for the Dodgers 20 year old Doyle Alexander.
- 1:00:01Ernie Banks, Chris Canagero and Milt Pappas in that order as we move into the fifth inning.
- 1:00:16Banks waiting at the plate.
- 1:00:19Al Downing looks in for a sign, left hand already in the fastball, a strike on one.
- 1:00:26So if you are starting dinner now you don't have to hurry up, just take your time.
- 1:00:29We've got lots of good baseball ahead of you tonight.
- 1:00:32The strike one pitch, curve ball just outside.
- 1:00:35A two handed gesture by Tudor, the indicator was off the corner.
- 1:00:39And the count one and one.
- 1:00:43Downing to the wind up and the one one pitch on the way.
- 1:00:45Fastball, a big chopper to Allen, he leaps in the air to one handed, grips the ball and throws him out.
- 1:00:52What made the play work for Allen, Banks runs very slowly now down to first base.
- 1:00:58Ernie's knees are giving him a very bad time.
- 1:01:03And with Allen leaping in the air, coming down, having to really set the grip and then throw and he still threw him out by 20.
- 1:01:09So it was a long run, it was much more than 90 feet for Banks all uphill.
- 1:01:14One away and Chris Cannazero the batter.
- 1:01:17Eddie Tudor has become the Inspector General back of the plate, he's been checking that baseball carefully.
- 1:01:22Particularly the ball when delivered by Pappas and now he had a look at that one.
- 1:01:26One out and here's Chris Cannazero.
- 1:01:32Cannazero hit into a forced play in the second inning.
- 1:01:35Right hand hitting catcher on deck, Milt Pappas.
- 1:01:40Downing ready, Al delivers fastball for a strike.
- 1:01:46Dodgers leading 1-0, Duke Simms single home Parker who had forced Allen and stolen seconds.
- 1:01:53The strike one pitch on the way, fastball just outside, 1-1.
- 1:02:06Here's a 1-1 pitch on the way, fastball, pop foul back of the plate, no play for Simms.
- 1:02:11He's going to come back to the screen and can't get it.
- 1:02:14On the other side of the screen bouncing in, 1-2.
- 1:02:27Chris Cannazero hitting with one out in the fifth inning.
- 1:02:38Chris slowly back up to the plate, Dodgers leading 1-0, the Giants lost today.
- 1:02:45Here's a 1-2 pitch on the way, swung on and missed, the palm ball got him swinging.
- 1:02:53Downing picks up his third strikeout and Milt Pappas a good hitting pitcher.
- 1:02:57He's had 18 home runs in his career coming up.
- 1:03:02Pappas has a half a dozen hits this year, one double and a run batted in.
- 1:03:10Milt right hand batters.
- 1:03:15What a beautiful evening in the ballpark.
- 1:03:24Pappas hits one foul outside of third, 0-1.
- 1:03:32Downing with a new ball, back to home play, just rubbing it up.
- 1:03:38Simms wigwags a sign out and Downing ready.
- 1:03:41Here's a strike one pitch to Pappas, breaking ball fouled away up along third to Peanut Lowry in the count 0-2.
- 1:03:54First of two, Doyle Alexander and Juan Pizarro in the night cap.
- 1:04:03Downing into the windup and the strike two pitch, fastball blew him down.
- 1:04:07Downing in order and at the end of four and a half innings Dodgers 1-Cubs nothing.
- 1:04:12Schlitz, Milwaukee in the world.
- 1:04:38You only get one crack at life and you've got to live it with all the stress though you get.
- 1:04:42In everything, even the beer you drink.
- 1:04:46Schlitz.
- 1:04:56Quite subtle for left, but you rather Schlitz, you rather beer.
- 1:05:12Bottom of the fifth inning, the Dodgers one run, two hits.
- 1:05:15The Cubs no runs, three hits.
- 1:05:17The Dodgers put their two hits together for the run in the fourth inning.
- 1:05:21After being held at list for three in a third innings, Richie Allen lined a single to right.
- 1:05:26Parker forced him.
- 1:05:28As we said, they couldn't get the double play because Becker was playing Parker to full and Kessinger had to wait for him to come to the bag.
- 1:05:35And by that time Parker beat the thrower first.
- 1:05:37Then West was able to steal second and Sim single to drive in the run.
- 1:05:42On the message board, a question and a lengthy answer.
- 1:05:47And the last part of the answer, Chicagoan of the year selected as the greatest Cub ever in his 19th season, Mr. Cub Ernie Banks.
- 1:05:54And the reason for the roar of applause in the background.
- 1:05:57That's the title of Ernie's book, Mr. Cub co-authored with Jimmy Enright.
- 1:06:03John Hall had a nice column on the book and we would recommend it as one of those happy good books on baseball and on quite a man.
- 1:06:10The pitch to Bill Buckner outside, ball one, one and oh.
- 1:06:16Pappas comes back in the fastball is low ball two.
- 1:06:20Buckner flied to right field in the third inning.
- 1:06:22He's all for one.
- 1:06:28Pappas arms dangling now ready and the two-oh pitch is lifted to center field.
- 1:06:33Brock Davis comes up in a patch of shade and makes the catch.
- 1:06:36One away.
- 1:06:40Waiting for Al Downing.
- 1:06:41Downing grounded to third in the third inning.
- 1:06:44After his own foul ball, jumps up and bit him on the right side of the head.
- 1:06:55Al right hand batter.
- 1:06:58Pappas reading signs now comes to Downing for a strike.
- 1:07:02Al has ten hits including two doubles and four home runs.
- 1:07:06And he's a great guy to have out there if you need a sacrifice.
- 1:07:09He has run it successfully for sacrifices six times.
- 1:07:13The pitch to Al low one and one.
- 1:07:18Bill Hands of the Cubs is another fellow who's a good mutter to move a runner along.
- 1:07:24Downing waxed to right center field and there's nobody there.
- 1:07:27Davis and Hickman converging.
- 1:07:28It's Hickman making a nice running catch.
- 1:07:32Al Downing goes out to Jim Hickman in right center.
- 1:07:35That made it a particularly good catch for Hickman.
- 1:07:39He had to get a jump squinting into the sun.
- 1:07:42Davis could not have gotten there.
- 1:07:44So two out and here is Maury Wells.
- 1:07:46Grounded out and walked.
- 1:07:470 for 1.
- 1:07:48He has already had his fine hand in this ball game.
- 1:07:51When he put on a repeat performance, the play that had upset the Padres last week.
- 1:07:57Nailed the Cubs in the fourth inning.
- 1:08:01Pappas ready and deals and Maury lifts one to shallow left center field.
- 1:08:05Davis and James and Cleo James makes the catch.
- 1:08:08The Dodgers are gone in a hurry.
- 1:08:09At the end of five, Dodgers 1-Cup is nothing.
- 1:08:12Sometimes Farmer John tosses out a remark that makes me do a double take.
- 1:08:16Now just the other day he said a Farmer John ham is like a baseball game.
- 1:08:20What he meant he said is that both give you a lot of action for your money.
- 1:08:23Consider, he added, how much lean red high protein meat you get from a Farmer John ham butt or shank for the low cost per pound.
- 1:08:31Plus Farmer John ham provides a bonus in flavors.
- 1:08:35Farmer John smokes his ham two to three times as long as some people over meat at Weston Wood.
- 1:08:40To give it a marvelous Weston flavor all its own.
- 1:08:43The first time you bake Farmer John ham you can tell the difference.
- 1:08:46And when you make leftover ham dishes, the wonderful Weston flavor comes through loud and clear.
- 1:08:51Most meats do for just one meal.
- 1:08:53A Farmer John ham makes three or four low cost family feasts.
- 1:08:57So for meat that's as easy on your budget as it is pleasing, get Farmer John ham.
- 1:09:02Gold medal winner at the California State Fair.
- 1:09:05It's the Easton most in quality and the Weston most in flavors.
- 1:09:13Through five innings the Dodgers leading the Cubs one to nothing.
- 1:09:16A run two hits for the Dodgers, no runs three hits for the Cubs.
- 1:09:19Between games tonight we'll have the 65 voice choir of Whittier's First Nazarene Church
- 1:09:25in a patriotic musical called In God We Press under the direction of Ed Anderson.
- 1:09:29That should indeed be pleasant to the ear.
- 1:09:3265 voices of the Whittier's First Nazarene Church.
- 1:09:38Oh we've had quite a five.
- 1:09:40Pappas and Downing battling this thing out and Al is shading milk so far one to nothing.
- 1:09:46Half of the infield in shade now.
- 1:09:50All have left the field in shade.
- 1:09:54But still a very bright sky.
- 1:09:56Don Kessinger, Glenn Beckert and Jim Hickman in that order.
- 1:10:01In the sixth one nothing Dodgers.
- 1:10:04Kessinger flied to right and struck out.
- 1:10:06Kessinger does not make a habit of striking out.
- 1:10:09In 320 at bats he's only struck out 25 times.
- 1:10:14Fastball over low ball one.
- 1:10:16Soudal brought up the right hand but only to indicate him with a downward gesture that the pitch was low.
- 1:10:23Allen even in fact to step up inside the bag at third.
- 1:10:27The next one high ball two.
- 1:10:30This first game is so important to both clubs of course because of the fact there is a slight pitching shortage for tomorrow night.
- 1:10:38The two old pitch inside so Downing is missed low outside and inside.
- 1:10:44Three and all the count.
- 1:10:50Now into his wind up in the three old pitch to Beckert.
- 1:10:53Very high.
- 1:10:54He was about as wild as he can get.
- 1:10:57He was low.
- 1:10:58He was high and away.
- 1:11:00He was inside and he was high and inside.
- 1:11:03Usually you see or hear of a pitcher being wild high or low high but he just missed in all four directions.
- 1:11:10The bat at Glenn Beckert.
- 1:11:13Second walk given up by Al Downing.
- 1:11:16The Cubs like to play hit and run.
- 1:11:18Any club that Leo DeRosa ever had anything to do with like to play hit and run and this is an ideal combination.
- 1:11:24So Downing has to watch it now.
- 1:11:25There they go.
- 1:11:26They're playing at a big bouncer over Allen's head.
- 1:11:28Base hit.
- 1:11:29Kessinger keeps on going to third.
- 1:11:31Crawford gets the ball back in.
- 1:11:33So you had just about enough time to think hit and run and there it was.
- 1:11:38You're not second guessing anybody but you wonder why the Dodgers didn't at least have a pitch out on the first pitch because that was a pretty obvious call on a DeRosa.
- 1:11:47So first and third and nobody out and the batter is Jim Hickman.
- 1:11:56So a walk followed by a base hit to left.
- 1:11:58First and third.
- 1:11:59Nobody out.
- 1:12:01And Hickman flied to right and single to left.
- 1:12:03One for two.
- 1:12:08Downing ready.
- 1:12:09Al delivers.
- 1:12:10Curve ball is felted to left field and that's going to go all the way.
- 1:12:16Jim Hickman has just bombed a three run home run to left field and perhaps the tip off on the inning was the way Downing walked Kessinger.
- 1:12:39He missed in four different spots on four pitches.
- 1:12:43Then hit run single and a three run home run and the Cubs now are leading three to one in the sixth inning.
- 1:12:50Nobody out and Ron Stantle the batter.
- 1:12:53Fastball is low.
- 1:12:54Ball one for Al Downing.
- 1:12:56That's the ninth home run he has allowed.
- 1:13:00In one hundred and forty five innings.
- 1:13:04The three one Chicago and the one oh pitch on the way fastball off the glove of Downing he's running after it picks it up and has no play.
- 1:13:15That'll be a base hit for Ron Stantle to slam on up Downing Smith and now the left fielder Cleo James coming up.
- 1:13:32Cleo James popped up and single the right he's one for two.
- 1:13:38No one throwing yet in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:13:43Downing was moving along nicely through five innings but here in the sixth the walk hit run single a long home run into the Dodger bullpen by Jim Hickman.
- 1:13:52By the way that home run by Hickman was his 14 and he has 37 runs batted in.
- 1:14:00Downing delivers low and inside ball one and I think it is not so much a loss of stuff that it is a lack of control that is plaguing Downing.
- 1:14:08Pete Nicholson gets up in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:14:12One and all the count to Cleo James.
- 1:14:17Downing set at the belt.
- 1:14:19Al's one oh pitch way outside so when a man starts missing in all directions he's hurting.
- 1:14:25It's not just one flaw in his delivery.
- 1:14:28The Downing is missing inside outside up and down.
- 1:14:32Two and all the count to Cleo James.
- 1:14:35Santa with first held on by Parker.
- 1:14:37Three one Cubs in the second.
- 1:14:39Now reading since straightens up the two oh pitch breaking ball for a strike.
- 1:14:44Two and one.
- 1:14:46After James comes Brock Davis.
- 1:14:50First game of the Twilight Knight doubleheaders and the Dodgers who came home walking on air were brought down to earth hard last night by Ferguson Jenkins.
- 1:14:59And are now tasting a little salt here in the first of two tonight.
- 1:15:05Downing straightens up looks at Santa.
- 1:15:07The two one pitch high ball three.
- 1:15:10So he's hurting.
- 1:15:11His control is way off and he's struggling.
- 1:15:16Davis has a look at Peanuts Lowry.
- 1:15:18Three and one to count.
- 1:15:20James one for two.
- 1:15:22The left hand hitting Brock Davis the center fielder on day.
- 1:15:25Passball is low and inside.
- 1:15:27He has not hit any wild spots like he has been all around the place.
- 1:15:33The Downing is struggling and with nobody out Brock Davis the batter.
- 1:15:38It really happened all of a sudden.
- 1:15:40In the fifth inning he threw strike after strike to get banks.
- 1:15:44Canna zero and Pappas he struck out Canna zero and Pappas and now he just can't put the ball where he wants it.
- 1:15:51Brock Davis single he skidded one by wills and grounded out.
- 1:15:56He's one for two and Downing in trouble and Parker comes up looking for the bond.
- 1:16:01Allen's already on the grass.
- 1:16:03Downing at the belt and then backs off the rubber and the runners retreat.
- 1:16:08The Downing is on the ropes and Sims out to talk to him now.
- 1:16:19Al walks Santo in the first inning but then appeared to settle down.
- 1:16:23But he not only has walked two here in the sixth he has been all over it.
- 1:16:28Up and down inside outside.
- 1:16:32It's one thing you see a pitcher you lose a little control and a pitching coach goes out and says well you're releasing the ball too early
- 1:16:37or you're doing this you're doing that but when you're wild all over there's not very much they can do.
- 1:16:43All right Davis waiting Downing ready Davis is potting and pulls away the pitch inside a throw to wills not in time to get Santo.
- 1:16:52One ball and no strikes to count.
- 1:17:05The road here comes up the steps showing some concern and all getting back to the bag.
- 1:17:10Apparently felt a muscle pull and Leon now says wait a minute I want to make sure he's all right.
- 1:17:15He's in scoring position and I'll find out for myself.
- 1:17:19So Leo is advancing to second base.
- 1:17:21He not slowly goes over there to see whether Santo is all right or not.
- 1:17:26Ron went back awkwardly and I think it would be his wide leg that bothered him and Leo was checking with him right this minute.
- 1:17:34Santa has appeared in 80 games.
- 1:17:38This is his 81st game so he's played in the mall and Leo wants to make sure he can continue.
- 1:17:46The Cubs are leading 3 to 1 the Dodgers got a run in the fourth inning but here in the sixth a walk a hit run single and a home run.
- 1:17:54I've given the Cubs three and with nobody out they have two more men aboard.
- 1:17:59The Giants were not flat up at Candlestick today the Astros ran up one side and down the other.
- 1:18:04They beat the Giants 18 to 4 and the Dodgers losing last night are losing today.
- 1:18:11Santo apparently did not satisfy his manager.
- 1:18:14Leo didn't like the answers and Paul Popovich will run for him and stay in the game.
- 1:18:19So Popovich goes starting out towards second base.
- 1:18:28Popovich at second, Cleo James at first, nobody out and Brock Davis at the plate to count one ball in North Strait.
- 1:18:40So two fellows who really make the Cubs move are not in this game now.
- 1:18:45Pepitone could not answer the bell at the start and Santo has to come out here in the sixth but with all of that the Cubs are leading 3 to 1.
- 1:18:53The Dodgers still looking for the run Parker and Allen on the grass, Downing peering into Sims.
- 1:18:59Popovich and James take their leads and Davis backs out.
- 1:19:05Brock a Los Angeles boy.
- 1:19:09He had two hits last night he went two for four.
- 1:19:14His first hit drove in the third Chicago run last night.
- 1:19:18Here's the pitch Davis looks and it's low ball two.
- 1:19:22Downing is like a man struggling to stay afloat.
- 1:19:27The way Pappas is pitching the Dodgers can certainly ill afford the Cubs piling up any kind of a sizable lead.
- 1:19:34And this is an inning where they threaten to do just that.
- 1:19:38Downing straightens up.
- 1:19:40The 2-0 pitch Davis around the bunt takes very high so he has him missed in the same spot twice.
- 1:19:47And Downing is very close to being hooked.
- 1:19:51Richie Allen comes over from third to holler something to him.
- 1:19:55With that desperate feeling that comes over the veteran or a rookie it's all alike they suddenly can't throw a strike.
- 1:20:023-0 to Brock Davis.
- 1:20:05Downing deals Davis takes a strike 3-1.
- 1:20:15Cubs 3 Dodgers 1 in the sixth inning nobody out.
- 1:20:19Pappas and James taking their lead.
- 1:20:223-1 Davis takes high the bases are loaded.
- 1:20:26And this is as wild as we've seen Downing.
- 1:20:28It's not just a matter of missing.
- 1:20:30It's the way he's missing and here comes Woller Alston.
- 1:20:41There are three ways to be wild in the big leagues.
- 1:20:46One way to be wild is to really just miss and be wild in one spot.
- 1:20:51Another way to be wild is not to walk anybody.
- 1:20:54But no matter how you try and put the ball it winds up directly over the plate and the hitters bang it away.
- 1:21:00And the third way to be wild is the way Downing is wild and that means curtains.
- 1:21:04He is wild high, he is wild low, he is wild inside, he is wild outside and you just can't hang around doing that.
- 1:21:11So the hook is in and Downing is coming out and Pete Mickelson will be picking up for him.
- 1:21:15And that's a great spot to get Mickelson.
- 1:21:17The base is loaded, nobody out and Ernie Banks will be the batter.
- 1:21:21But Pete is trying to put the reins to a runaway cub.
- 1:21:25They won last night, they're leading today.
- 1:21:28And so the Giants and the Dodgers had their big two game series.
- 1:21:32Each club no doubt looking forward to the weekend series.
- 1:21:36And each club paying a price and Downing comes out.
- 1:21:40Wow who has hit sensational ball in his last seven games lost his control and comes out in the sixth inning.
- 1:21:48He can't win, he can only lose.
- 1:21:50Or have nothing to do with it depending upon the Dodger hitters against Pappas.
- 1:21:53And depending upon how Mickelson can do in quieting Chicago.
- 1:21:57We've got some time, let's spend it with Jerry.
- 1:21:59Alright Vinnie on the scoreboard, Houston beat San Francisco today 18 to 4.
- 1:22:04They have won 6 straight and 9 out of 10.
- 1:22:06The Giants have lost 7 out of 10.
- 1:22:08Duker the winner, Ray relieved in the sixth inning after they piled up the big lead.
- 1:22:12They scored 10 runs in the fourth inning.
- 1:22:15Stone was the loser, relieved by Robertson, Carruthers, Bryant and McMahon.
- 1:22:19Cincinnati with a five game losing streak going.
- 1:22:22Opened up on a bad note as Pittsburgh scored five in the first inning and lead them 5 to nothing.
- 1:22:28That's Nolan for Cincinnati and Johnson for Pittsburgh.
- 1:22:33Montreal over New York 12 to 7 in the day game.
- 1:22:36The Mets now have lost 7 out of 8.
- 1:22:38Morton was the winner and Williams the loser.
- 1:22:40And Morton had a home run his first of the year.
- 1:22:42Philadelphia leads Atlanta 1 to nothing at the end of an inning and a half.
- 1:22:46St. Louis at San Diego a little later, Gibson and Kirby.
- 1:22:49In the American League the Senators and Baltimore no score at the end of two innings of play.
- 1:22:55And Boston leads over Cleveland in the first game 4 to nothing.
- 1:23:00Cleveland leads the second game 4 to 1 in the first inning.
- 1:23:04New York Detroit later, Oakland Chicago later, Kansas City Milwaukee later and California Minnesota also later.
- 1:23:11All right let's go back to the action here and here's Vinnie.
- 1:23:13All right Jerry and Leo D'Orocia now smelling a chance for a big inning has decided to go for broke.
- 1:23:18He has lifted Ernie Banks and Billy Williams will hit with the bases loaded and nobody out.
- 1:23:24That is a considerable improvement for the Chicago picture in many ways.
- 1:23:29First of all Williams is hitting almost 200 points higher than Banks.
- 1:23:33Secondly Williams is a left handed batter against Mickelson and thirdly Williams runs so much better than Banks on the bad knees.
- 1:23:41So the situation has gotten tougher now that Mickelson has been brought in.
- 1:23:45He gets Williams.
- 1:23:48So Billy who was to rest the first game comes up now with a chance to break it wide open.
- 1:23:53The clubs are leading 3 to 1.
- 1:23:55Duke sends in a lengthy conversation with Pete Mickelson.
- 1:23:58Downing with five innings plus is charged with at least three runs, a half a dozen hits, four walks and four strikeouts.
- 1:24:06And oddly enough his troubles should come in the sixth inning right after he finished the fifth striking out the last two batters that he faced.
- 1:24:15Now here's Billy Williams with 50 runs batted in.
- 1:24:19Mickelson out of a stretch and a sinker is grounded to the feeder.
- 1:24:23He goes to Wills and he has no further play.
- 1:24:27In fact Davis went in high to first base and I think Wills right arm hit Davis so he was unable to throw it all.
- 1:24:35So it's only a fours play, one out, four to one Chicago and the batter is Chris Canizel.
- 1:24:52That run of course is charged to Downing.
- 1:24:56Canizel with Cleo James at third.
- 1:25:00Canizel is always a risk as far as hitting into a double play.
- 1:25:04With James at third a fast man the Dodgers have to worry about a possible squeeze.
- 1:25:10Last night in a similar situation in the fifth inning Canizel hit into a double play.
- 1:25:14Mickelson delivers, Chris hits a ground ball back a second, backhand into the feeder over to Wills.
- 1:25:19The fourth third double play.
- 1:25:35Boy that was an outstanding double play.
- 1:25:37I wish you had that on film to look at all winter.
- 1:25:39The feeder backhanding the ball on the dead run behind second,
- 1:25:43flipped to Wills from a full turn and fired to first to double up Canizel who was hit by lightning again.
- 1:25:49The Dodgers get out of it cheaply enough.
- 1:25:51Four runs for the Cubbies on three hits.
- 1:25:55One left and at the end of five and a half comes four Dodgers won.
- 1:26:00For the Cubs they make several changes now.
- 1:26:03Billy Williams had hit for Banks.
- 1:26:05Jim Hickman who started the game in right field takes over at first base.
- 1:26:10Paul Popovich who ran for Ron Santo stays in at third.
- 1:26:15And Johnny Callison comes off the bench and goes into right field.
- 1:26:19So the Cubs defensively have an infield of Hickman and Becker, Kessinger and Popovich.
- 1:26:24An outfield of James Davis and Callison and a battery of Pappas and Canizel.
- 1:26:29So it is four to one Chicago.
- 1:26:32And the Dodgers limited to only two hits through five innings have got to go to the Wolfs or else.
- 1:26:37And it will be Willie Crawford to start it off.
- 1:26:42Crawford fouled out and then lost a hit on a fine catch by center fielder Brock Davidson.
- 1:26:48Willie fouled the first one away on one.
- 1:26:55The ball wedging into the backstop screen and the ball boy hands it to a youngster who couldn't get it out.
- 1:27:03Much to the delight of the crowd on one account.
- 1:27:06Pappas into the windup, back he comes, change it off the plate.
- 1:27:09A high chopper to Becker, Glenn in a hurry, throws in a dirt dugout by Hickman.
- 1:27:13Good play. And Crawford is retired one away.
- 1:27:18Willie Davis flied to center and fouled out. He's 0 for 2.
- 1:27:28Bottom of the sixth inning of the first game.
- 1:27:31The club's four run, six hits. Three run homerun by Jim Hickman has been a big blow.
- 1:27:36The Dodgers just one run, two hits. They have not hit the ball hard against Pappas at all.
- 1:27:42Milk ready and delivers. Fastball popped up and it'll be the shortstop, Kessinger, going out on the rim.
- 1:27:48He makes it look easy. Two away.
- 1:27:51So the Dodgers had two base hits for a run in the fourth inning.
- 1:27:56And that's the only sound they've made so far.
- 1:27:58Richie Allen coming out. Richie walked and singled a right to get the first hit off Pappas.
- 1:28:06Sims base hit the right, scored the only Dodger run.
- 1:28:14Milt has a shutout this year. He is 8 and 8 with the league.
- 1:28:18He has a decision for every game he started, like Ferguson Jenkins.
- 1:28:21Breaking ball is strike to Richie on one.
- 1:28:24His ERA is four and he is leading by three.
- 1:28:34Two outs, sixth inning, 4-1 Chicago.
- 1:28:38Pappas ready in the strike one pitch.
- 1:28:40Fastball inside, driving Allen away, one and one.
- 1:28:45Well, only in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:28:48The first game of a Twilight Night doubleheader.
- 1:28:51Pappas who works quickly comes back one-one and missed inside, ball two.
- 1:28:57Two and one, a counter to Richie.
- 1:29:00Allen one for one, hitting about 270 as he stands at the plate.
- 1:29:03His highest average for the year.
- 1:29:05Two-one pitch to Richie, swung on and missed strike two.
- 1:29:10Allen's base hit in the fourth was his 76.
- 1:29:14A rather familiar number in these parts.
- 1:29:20The two-two pitch to Richie, swung on and missed and down he goes.
- 1:29:25So Pappas getting tougher. He retires seven straight and at the end of six,
- 1:29:29comes four, Dodgers one.
- 1:29:31Cases, maps?
- 1:29:32They're all in the car, George.
- 1:29:33Well, it's been a great vacation so far. By tonight we'll be in the...
- 1:29:37What's the matter, George?
- 1:29:39The car won't start. It won't even turn over.
- 1:29:41Oh, now what? At home I could just call Harry over at the Union 76 station.
- 1:29:45I know Harry does a good job, but so far from home I don't know who to go to.
- 1:29:49Nobody's got the old spirit anymore, Marge.
- 1:29:52George, look up a Union 76 dealer in the directory.
- 1:29:55I bet they're friendly even away from home.
- 1:30:00You can rely on Union 76 when you're far from home.
- 1:30:03Our dealers from coast to coast will do their best to solve your problem and get you going again.
- 1:30:08And at Union 76 we try to make a smile standard equipment.
- 1:30:11Marge, that Union 76 guy was friendly.
- 1:30:14He told me what was wrong with the car over the phone.
- 1:30:16It was nothing serious then?
- 1:30:18Not really. I forgot to take it out of drive.
- 1:30:21The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
- 1:30:25Through six innings, the Cubs four runs, six hits and no errors.
- 1:30:30Dodgers one run, two hits and no errors.
- 1:30:33It was scoreless for three. The Dodgers led one to nothing at the end of four, one to nothing at the end of five.
- 1:30:38And then the Cubs picked up a big four in the sixth inning to chase Hal Downing.
- 1:30:42Let's go to the seventh and for more play, here's Jerry.
- 1:30:45All right Vinnie and Milt Papas will start it off. He has spied up and struck out in two tries.
- 1:30:49And Pete Nicholson ready to go to work. Pete came in and did a great job to slow down the Cubs.
- 1:30:54You get Williams on a forced play and Canazaro on a double play on a great play by Jimmy LaFever.
- 1:30:59And now he starts out with Papas the pitcher.
- 1:31:03So Pete getting set to go here.
- 1:31:06Cubs leading four to one. Now the wind up in the pitch on the way to Milt.
- 1:31:09Bounce wide a third and over Allen on into left field. It'll be a base hit for Papas.
- 1:31:14Allen went to his left and the ball took a big high hop over his left shoulder.
- 1:31:18So Papas singles to left field. Hit number seven and here is Kessinger coming up.
- 1:31:23He has spied out, struck out and walked. And the walk started the sixth inning.
- 1:31:27Troubles of Al Downing.
- 1:31:30All right Kessinger coming on with Beckert and then Hickman to follow.
- 1:31:37Second game of the series. First game of the doubleheader.
- 1:31:40Second game tonight will be Juan Pizarro and Doyle Alexander.
- 1:31:45Here's the look now and they check on the pitch.
- 1:31:48Taking low for a ball. One ball no strikes.
- 1:31:52One at all.
- 1:32:03One ball on no strike count.
- 1:32:06Kessinger turns around out of back on the left side with Mickelson going.
- 1:32:10Now the pitch. They're looking for the but it's first base where Parker Fields goes to second base in time and there's no play at first.
- 1:32:17So they get the force out on the front. Parker down to Wills.
- 1:32:22And that'll bring on Glenn Beckert. Had a hit and run single to left field in the sixth inning.
- 1:32:27And that set it up for Jim Hickman's home run.
- 1:32:30Beckert.
- 1:32:32Beckert the batter one home run 22 RBI's and a three forty eight batting average.
- 1:32:40One out one on.
- 1:32:44Papa single was forced on Kessinger's bunt.
- 1:32:49Now Mickelson ready to go again.
- 1:32:51Beckert right hand batter into Goodman he's third in the league in hitting with his three forty eight average.
- 1:32:55He's right behind Willie Davis.
- 1:32:58Willie at three fifty starting tonight.
- 1:33:00He is over three and Beckert is one for three.
- 1:33:04Have a look in the pitch strike call on the inside corner on one.
- 1:33:11Beckert has a look at third base coach peanuts Lowry.
- 1:33:17Oh on the count with one away Cubs leading four to one were in the top of the seventh inning first game of the doubleheader.
- 1:33:23Now the pitch on the way breaking ball low.
- 1:33:26One ball one strike out on deck Jim Hickman is now playing first base for the Cubs.
- 1:33:37One on one.
- 1:33:40Pete said again the look is a pop up foul behind the plate Sims digging back for it.
- 1:33:47This is going to be out of play over the backstop.
- 1:33:51Strike two ball one to Glenn Beckett.
- 1:33:57The Cubs will make their final visit to Dodger Stadium here tomorrow night.
- 1:34:01It'll be our last game of the Cubs this year.
- 1:34:08One ball two strikes.
- 1:34:15Now again Beckert waiting.
- 1:34:17Kessinger a short lead away from Parker as Mickelson looks down and now Beckert backs up.
- 1:34:26Once again Beckert and they're ready to go.
- 1:34:28Mickelson out of a stretch in the one two pitch.
- 1:34:30Ground ball to third Allen has it down to second base one and no other play as Kessinger takes the fever out.
- 1:34:37The rolling slide in there and Jimmy goes down in the dirt and had no chance to make a play.
- 1:34:42So a force play five to four third to second two away and here's Hickman.
- 1:34:47Hickman with a home run deep to left field.
- 1:34:50His fourteenth of the year.
- 1:34:52He has driven him three of the Cubs runs.
- 1:34:54He has two hits.
- 1:34:56Jim now playing first base batting average two twenty eight.
- 1:35:00He has thirteen fourteen home runs and thirty seven runs batted in.
- 1:35:08Two outs man on first base Beckert.
- 1:35:10Cubs four Dodgers one seventh inning.
- 1:35:14Mickelson set again in the pitch.
- 1:35:16In for a strike.
- 1:35:18Good synchro for the knees.
- 1:35:19Oh and one.
- 1:35:25Strike one count.
- 1:35:26Hickman big strong right hand batter.
- 1:35:31Now again Mickelson ready.
- 1:35:33Backs off.
- 1:35:38He looks at first Becker to short lead now he's over there again on the pitch.
- 1:35:43Low inside a throw to first base Becker comes back in head first Sims firing down to Parker not in time.
- 1:35:55One ball one strike two outs.
- 1:36:05Mickelson ready again in the pitch palm ball is in there for a strike one and two.
- 1:36:11He threw up that slow in that time and Hickman let it go by a ball and two strikes to Jim.
- 1:36:26I had one ball and two strikes.
- 1:36:28Here's the look again in the pitch on the way.
- 1:36:30Fly ball to center field and Davis comes up makes the catch for the.
- 1:36:34Hickman is out on a liner to center and the Cubs are retired in the seventh no runs a hit and one man left to score at the end of six and a half Cubs for the Dodgers one Schlitz Milwaukee in the world.
- 1:37:04You only live once that's what makes you live hard because you don't get a second chance.
- 1:37:14I settled the second best even the beer you drink when you're out of schlitz you're out of.
- 1:37:43The Dodgers come on in the bottom of the seventh inning outstanding for the seventh inning stretch Parker Sims LaFever against Milk Pappas milk trying to get his ninth one of the year and his tenth lifetime victory against the Dodgers Parker has been on on the force and bounced out to the pitcher.
- 1:38:03Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:38:05Bow back over the screen strike one for the one the Cubs lead they exploded for four in the sixth inning after the Dodgers had scored one of the fourth.
- 1:38:16Pappas the starter still in their fourth Chicago downing was replaced by Mickelson in the six Parker takes a strike at the outside corner.
- 1:38:32Going to the count the West hitting two ninety four.
- 1:38:37Now the pitch ground ball to the left side it's short backhanded by Kessinger long throw in time and Parker's got good play by shortstop Don Kessinger that brings on Duke Sims who has a single to drive in the only Dodger run.
- 1:38:52Then singled in the fourth inning to score Parker from second base.
- 1:39:04All right Sims at bat.
- 1:39:06Pappas now has run his string to eight retired in a row since Sims got the base hit in the fourth inning.
- 1:39:14So milk while he was with Atlanta had a lot of trouble completing ballgames.
- 1:39:19And he had almost gained the reputation of being a five inning pitcher.
- 1:39:22But this year he has completed seven games with the Cubs.
- 1:39:25This is his 17th strike.
- 1:39:27He's completed a lot of a swing and a miss strike one.
- 1:39:31Mild always said they didn't have much faith in him in Atlanta and they took him out too soon.
- 1:39:36He went to Chicago last year and he's turned in to be quite a pitcher which he was in the American League.
- 1:39:420-1 count Sims backs out on deck with fever and then Buckner.
- 1:39:52Now the wind up and down comes the pitch foul back over the screen strike two.
- 1:39:58Milk Pappas come right under.
- 1:40:090-1 count Duke Sims waiting.
- 1:40:13The Dodgers held to just two hits.
- 1:40:15They have a team batting average of 272.
- 1:40:19One point ahead of the Cubs.
- 1:40:22Now Pappas delivers off speed low for a ball.
- 1:40:31One ball two strikes to Duke.
- 1:40:33The Dodgers had 11 hits last night but could score only one run.
- 1:40:37So they have the same total of runs scored on only two hits tonight.
- 1:40:41One and two.
- 1:40:42Now Pappas ready delivers inside around the knees ball two and it's two and two.
- 1:40:46Pappas has walked two.
- 1:40:47He has struck out three.
- 1:40:49He has struck out LaFever twice.
- 1:40:54Two and two.
- 1:40:55Sims out for a handful of dirt.
- 1:41:00Nice crowd on hand but still plenty of good seats available here if you'd like to come out and see the second game and the remainder of this first one.
- 1:41:06You have a lot of time.
- 1:41:07Here's the two two pitch.
- 1:41:08Duke pops it up foul out of play and the count stays two and two.
- 1:41:23Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:41:26Sims hitting 268 with two home runs and 14 runs batted in.
- 1:41:31Now Pappas checking signs again.
- 1:41:35Right hander ready and the two two pitch off speed foul back to the screen.
- 1:41:39The top and comes on over into the crowd.
- 1:41:50So it's two and two and Sims again backs away as Pappas gets a new ball to work with.
- 1:41:56LaFever on deck then Buckner here in the seventh.
- 1:41:59Cubs lead four to one.
- 1:42:03Again the wind up in the pitch on the way inside ball three breaking pitch into the knees.
- 1:42:09Three and two to Duke Sims.
- 1:42:13Cubs won last night behind Ferguson Jenkins trying to make a two in a row here in this one.
- 1:42:24Three balls two strikes Sims waiting.
- 1:42:27Now the pitch.
- 1:42:28Ground ball to first base Picklin there up with it and underhand to Pappas covering in time for the second out.
- 1:42:34The Sims out Picklin to Pappas two down and here's LaFever.
- 1:42:38Jimmy has struck out twice tonight hitting 275 with eight home runs and 42 runs batted in.
- 1:42:44Buckner on deck.
- 1:42:52Bobby O'Brien throwing in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:43:05Two outs LaFever waits here's the pitch from Pappas.
- 1:43:08Little low with a change one ball and no strikes Billy Buckner on deck.
- 1:43:16LaFever backs out for a moment now goes in there again and Pappas checks his signs he is two and one with the Dodgers this year.
- 1:43:22There's a ground ball to the right side.
- 1:43:24Beckered up with it on a big bounce throws the first from the Dodgers go out one two three and Pappas now retired ten in a row and the score at the end of seven.
- 1:43:32Cubs four and the Dodgers have one.
- 1:43:35Talking with Farmer John recently he made an interesting point he mentioned that when something is enjoyable like baseball it's enjoyable anytime day or night.
- 1:43:43And then he added just about everyone enjoys bacon for breakfast so why don't more people serve it for dinner now and then.
- 1:43:50Well his idea makes sense no other meat is so rich in flavor and of course no other bacon can match the flavor of Farmer John.
- 1:43:57The secret is in the old time western way he smokes his bacon over native western wood to give it a hearty husky western flavor all its own.
- 1:44:05Well that's why so little stretches such a long way to make it economical meat to serve and Farmer John bacon is extra lean too providing plenty of protein as well as an abundance of food energy.
- 1:44:16So why not go along with Farmer John and try his bacon for dinner one of these evenings.
- 1:44:21Farmer John Bacon gold medal winner at the California State Fair.
- 1:44:25It's the eastern most in quality and the western most in flavor and remember enjoyable anytime.
- 1:44:33Here's Danny Goodman's fine Dodger souvenir bargain package all for two dollars including mailing a Dodger yearbook a baseball digest 20 Dodger player pictures a Dodger scarf and the pennants of all 12 National League clubs.
- 1:44:46Send your name and address and two dollars to Danny Goodman Dodger Stadium Los Angeles 9 0 0 12.
- 1:44:51OK to the eighth inning more play here's Ben.
- 1:44:54All right Jerry and just as the sunlight is starting to vanish so the outs are starting to go with it here at Dodger Stadium.
- 1:45:00They suddenly find themselves in the eighth inning and the Cubs are sitting atop a four to one lead.
- 1:45:05More than that it has been a strong performance by Milt Pappas.
- 1:45:10He has retired the last 10 in a row and he's allowed only two hits so that for one lead the big one pop of it rolls one foul.
- 1:45:19Nice play by Joey Amalfatano the pride of San Pedro coaching at first.
- 1:45:23Oh and one account Papa bitch ran for Santo Sato and an attempted pick off play got back to second base in the sixth inning and apparently hurt his right leg and he's out of there and Papa bitch finishing up line drive leaping catch by Parker.
- 1:45:47Parker went as high as he possibly can jump and then extended his right arm as far as it'll go and he takes a base hit away from Paul Papa there and the batter Cleo James James is one for two he's single to right.
- 1:46:02Cleo one for one.
- 1:46:08Right hand batter Mickelson delivers a sinker bonded foul behind the plate on one.
- 1:46:14This is apparently Mickelson's last inning of work he figures to come out for a hitter in the eight.
- 1:46:22Al Downing led one to nothing through five innings and then he lost his control in the six he just couldn't get a strike and when he got the ball over the plate the Cubs hit it.
- 1:46:30The big blow a three run home run by Jim Hickman strike one pitch on the hands and a leaping catch by wheels of a little loopy that thing wasn't hit hard.
- 1:46:40Just a little dying quail and wheels went up and got it to down and Brock Davis the batter.
- 1:46:51To our top of the eight Cubs for Dodgers one.
- 1:46:57Brock Davis left hand hitting center fielder single grounded out and walk he's one for two.
- 1:47:03When the Dodgers bad in the bottom half they have Buckner then Mickelson spot and will the pitch outside ball one.
- 1:47:11The Giants lost the Dodgers are losing and the club that can profit is Houston the one oh pitch on the way ground ball a one hopper to Parker he walks that thing to the bag and the Cubs are gone in the eighth.
- 1:47:23The end of seven and a half Cubs for Dodgers one.
- 1:47:27Would you like to know how to get the best deal on a new or used car buy from the dealer with the best service department.
- 1:47:33It's true.
- 1:47:34Here's where a dealership can save you real money by doing a job right the first time and this is exactly why Don Sanderson Ford in Glendale is so popular with Valley residents.
- 1:47:44They treat you right after the sale to remember this when you're shopping around that's Don Sanderson Ford 5300 Grand Avenue in Glendale where good service makes a great deal even better.
- 1:47:56Alka Seltzer brings you an Alka Seltzer story came to this little place waiters says try this you like it.
- 1:48:04What's this try it you like it but what is try it you like it so I tried it thought I was going to die to Alka Seltzer for headache and acid indigestion no aspirin or antacid alone can possibly relieve you in as many ways as Alka Seltzer.
- 1:48:22Alka Seltzer works try it you like it.
- 1:48:32Bottom of the eighth inning here at Dodger Stadium and Mill Papas is sitting on top of a four to one lead the Dodgers will have Bill Buckner Tom Haller and Maury Wills.
- 1:48:42Buckner suddenly finds himself locked in a small slump after picking up 12 hits in four starts he has turned around to go 0 for 10.
- 1:48:59The Buckner waiting at the plate and Papas was retired the last 10 in a row deals a strike here where he had looking for walks he has walked to the walk Alan in the second inning and a two hour walk to Wills in the third.
- 1:49:15Now milk strike one pitch outside and high one ball one strike the second game one for Zorro and Doyle Alexander.
- 1:49:29Papas into the wind up and the 1 1 pitch on the way is whacked into right field base hit the Buckner Bill tries to lead the Dodgers back and that'll bring up Tom Haller.
- 1:49:45That is only the third Dodger hit so they have been thoroughly muffled by Papas.
- 1:49:52Jim Hickman goes to the mound to talk to milk.
- 1:49:56Tom Haller hitting 234.
- 1:50:03Now is to parade.
- 1:50:11Tom Haller at the plate Buckner not held on by Hickman he's directly back of him.
- 1:50:15Papas at the belt and delivers and is a broken background ball to Hickman he goes to Kessinger back to Hickman double play.
- 1:50:26So how it breaks his bat hits into a double play and we have two down in the eighth inning.
- 1:50:34Three six three double play.
- 1:50:37And the batter is Maury will.
- 1:50:43Maury wills is 0 for 2 with a walk.
- 1:50:47He grounded out and fly to left plus the walk and a stolen base.
- 1:50:52The Dodgers led 1 nothing into the sixth inning and then all of a sudden downing just could not find the strike zone.
- 1:50:58He missed in four different directions on Kessinger.
- 1:51:02Then on the first pitch they played hit and run with Becker and he singles and then Hickman walked up and hit one into the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:51:09Will takes high ball on Sandoz single there was a walk by James a walk to Davis and finally they had to bring in Mickelson to restore some water of course played at the fourth run over.
- 1:51:20And can a zero ended it by hitting into a double play that was really something to see strike to Wilson to count one and one.
- 1:51:26But the Dodger bats have really been locked up in cold storage by Mill Pappas.
- 1:51:33One one pitch will take line inside both of.
- 1:51:39Two and one to Maury wills two out on the eighth inning four to one Chicago.
- 1:51:46Milk checking right hand already and here he comes.
- 1:51:49It's a left field but that's exactly where James is to take it to the out and the Dodgers are gone quickly in the eighth.
- 1:51:55No runs are hit nobody left at the end of eight Chicago for Dodgers one.
- 1:52:02One.

- 1:56:02.
- 1:56:07I took it to a Union 76 certified serviceman and he had it in shape at no time.
- 1:56:11And look what he gave me.
- 1:56:12What?
- 1:56:13Tissues.
- 1:56:14The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
- 1:56:21Before we go to the ninth with the cops leading four to one, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:56:25This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 1:56:27The Good Son. K-T-A-R Phoenix.
- 1:56:41Ninth inning, four to one Chicago.
- 1:56:43Bobby O'Brien, who was given a rather quick exit last night.
- 1:56:46He went three in the third innings.
- 1:56:48Although the three runs charged to him and the ultimate defeat, the runs were unearned.
- 1:56:53O'Brien is two and two with the league, all in one with the Cubs.
- 1:56:58Bobby is in his 14th game, his ninth in relief.
- 1:57:02He completed one game of shutout, you remember, against the Cardinals.
- 1:57:05O'Brien pitching the ninth inning and Johnny Callison will start it off.
- 1:57:10Then it'll be Chris Cannazero and Mill Papert.
- 1:57:21Callison making his first appearance at the plate.
- 1:57:26Johnny is hitting two 18.
- 1:57:29Left hand hitting right fielder.
- 1:57:32O'Brien into the windup and Bobby's first pitch is popped in the air to right field.
- 1:57:37Buckner comes trotting in from shade to sunlight and back into shade again and makes the catch for the out.
- 1:57:42They look like a chameleon changing colors out there.
- 1:57:45One down.
- 1:57:47Here's Chris Cannazero, hit into a fourth play, struck out and then hit one that should have been on film.
- 1:57:53Up the middle, backhanded by LaFever who flipped to Wills who made a full turn on the bag and threw him out at first.
- 1:57:59That was quite a double play.
- 1:58:01Cannazero over three.
- 1:58:05On deck, Mill Papert, who has had this ballgame very much in his hands ever since he got the four in the sixth inning.
- 1:58:15The pitch to Cannazero outside, ball one, one and oh.
- 1:58:19When the Dodgers bat in the bottom of the ninth they'll have Willie Crawford, Willie Davis and Richie Allen.
- 1:58:25Here's the one-oh pitch on the way, fast ball low, ball two.
- 1:58:29Two and oh to Cannazero.
- 1:58:32Giants lost, Dodgers are losing and the Astros are starting to believe in themselves.
- 1:58:40If they ever had any doubts, the pitch is strike two and one.
- 1:58:43Houston by beating the Giants are now seven back.
- 1:58:54Here's the two-one pitch coming up.
- 1:58:56Fast ball, belted to left field, back goes Crawford, a full turn to the warning track and this one's off the wall.
- 1:59:02I think he turned the wrong way and Cannazero has a double.
- 1:59:06Crawford, who plays a lot of right field, went one way and the ball went the other.
- 1:59:13The Willys surrounded the fly ball double and with one out a good hitting pitcher coming up, Mill Papert.
- 1:59:23Papert has fly to center, struck out and single, he's one for three.
- 1:59:35Milk with seven hits this year, a runner at second, one out, ninth inning, four to one, Chicago.
- 1:59:42First of two games, remember.
- 1:59:44O'Brien at the belt and delivers, gets the inside corner for a strike, 0-1.
- 1:59:53Joe Pepitone in uniform and in the dugout, Pep apparently will be in the second game.
- 1:59:59The strike one pitch is a half swing, he held up on a pitch in the dirt, an account one and one.
- 2:00:22One and one to Mill Papert.
- 2:00:29O'Brien leans in to get a sign.
- 2:00:31Now Bobby, set at the belt, a look back at second base at Cannazero, works a slow curve in there nicely for a strike one and two.
- 2:00:50O'Brien set, Papert's waiting, one-two pitch, fast ball, swung on and missed, strike three.
- 2:00:56So Papert strikes out, two down and the battle will be Don Kessinger.
- 2:01:01Kessinger fly to right and struck out, walked and hit into a fourth play.
- 2:01:06Don is 0 for three.
- 2:01:07His walk in the sixth inning though was the tip off.
- 2:01:10That's one downing through one low away, then high away, then low inside, then high inside.
- 2:01:18That was the beginning of the end for Al.
- 2:01:20He walked Kessinger on four and then the hit and run single by Beckard and the Cubs were off to the races.
- 2:01:28Kessinger, good ball player, checks in at 289.
- 2:01:33Batting right handed, he's a switch hitter.
- 2:01:35O'Brien delivers, fast ball low, ball one.
- 2:01:46Ninth inning, four to one, Chicago.
- 2:01:50O'Brien a look back at second base, works Kessinger low, ball two, on deck, then Beckard.
- 2:02:03Beckard is one for four.
- 2:02:10O'Brien straightens up and the 2-0 pitch on the way, taken for a strike, 2-1.
- 2:02:18Dodgers scored in the fourth inning.
- 2:02:21The Cubs scored four times in the sixth.
- 2:02:23The Dodgers have only three singles in eight innings against Pappas.
- 2:02:302-1 pitch, fast ball low, ball three, three and one.
- 2:02:40Glenn Beckard waking his turn, he's hitting 348.
- 2:02:44So you go from tough to tougher when you pitch to Kessinger followed by Beckard.
- 2:02:49Three and one.
- 2:02:52O'Brien a look at Canna's arrow, the pitch to Kessinger, line to right, Buckner comes up
- 2:02:56and the ball sinks for a hit, then gets away from him, Canna's arrow scores 51-5-1 Chicago.
- 2:03:04Buckner tried to make a do or die play but couldn't do it.
- 2:03:08And the ball hit him on the left knee, I believe, yup, in watching him flex that left leg.
- 2:03:13He tried to shoestring it and when he missed it hit him on the left kneecap.
- 2:03:19So O'Brien gives up two hits and a run and the batter is Beckard.
- 2:03:27Line to right, grounded out, single hit into a fourth play, he's one for four.
- 2:03:34O'Brien at the bell and delivers and the fast ball's a strike, going one.
- 2:03:39It is July the seventh.
- 2:03:41The Dodgers are playing their 85th game and we've got a long way to go.
- 2:03:46Boy, it's going to be something.
- 2:03:48The strike one pitch to Beckard, slow curve, whacked into left field.
- 2:03:52You could have hung your hat on that one.
- 2:03:54And Crawford on a one-hopper gets it back into Wills.
- 2:03:58So O'Brien hangs one to Beckard, now brings up Jim Hickman.
- 2:04:08So Pappas, who appeared to have this thing stuffed in his hip pocket anyway, is now given more.
- 2:04:13Five and ten for him, five runs, ten hits.
- 2:04:17And here is Jim Hickman who put the slug on downing in the sixth inning.
- 2:04:22Jim is two for four and he's hit the ball hard all four times.
- 2:04:31O'Brien's set, run is at first and second and Bobby delivers.
- 2:04:34Fast ball, hit just foul outside a third and that had chased another cub home.
- 2:04:390-1.
- 2:04:48Don't forget the second game and the way this first one is going, that second one becomes mighty important.
- 2:04:53And rookie Doyle Alexander will be going against veteran Juan Pizarro.
- 2:05:070-1 to Jim Hickman.
- 2:05:10For reminder, we still have plenty of seats, plenty of sunlight and a beautiful evening at the ballpark.
- 2:05:15Hickman takes low, 1-1.
- 2:05:17The second game will start approximately a half hour after the first, so you folks are wondering about it.
- 2:05:22You've got time to get over here.
- 2:05:25Five to one Chicago, ninth inning, two out.
- 2:05:31Now O'Brien ready and the 1-1 pitch to Hickman, fast ball outside, ball two, two and one.
- 2:05:42O'Brien having his troubles.
- 2:05:45Last night in comebacks tonight in relief and is struggling.
- 2:05:51Hickman big right hand hitter, started in right field, finished up at first base.
- 2:05:55O'Brien's 2-1 pitch, Jim strokes it to center, that's a base hit.
- 2:05:59Davis has to go over and play it on a tricky hop, so Kessinger scores and in the third goes Beckett.
- 2:06:05It is 6-1 Chicago and O'Brien hasn't been able to cool anybody.
- 2:06:16So Jim Hickman has three hits and four runs batted in.
- 2:06:24O'Brien has surrendered a double and three singles in the ninth inning.
- 2:06:28Time out for the moment, Mel Steiner pointing ball one.
- 2:06:34Apparently O'Brien went to his face while on the hill, that's right.
- 2:06:37So the count is one ball and no strikes.
- 2:06:40O'Brien went to his face while still up on the mound and Mel Steiner spotted it.
- 2:06:451-0 the count, Steiner informing Sudol and the plate umpire then informed the press box.
- 2:06:52Here's Paul Popovich.
- 2:06:54Popovich robbed of a hit on a leaping catch by Parker in the eighth inning.
- 2:06:58O'Brien deals and it's piled away.
- 2:07:00On one, 6-1 Chicago in the ninth.
- 2:07:14O'Brien's set, checks the runners, the 1-1 pitch, fastball outside, ball two, 2-1.
- 2:07:20So Mel Papas getting fat sitting in the dugout.
- 2:07:27He was leading 4-1, now it's 6-1.
- 2:07:30O'Brien's 2-1 pitch, off speed and lifted to Davis in Santa Fe.
- 2:07:34He has to go back to get it and Willie does just that.
- 2:07:37So the Cubs get two runs, four hits and lead two.
- 2:07:40And at the end of eight and a half, Cubs six, Dodgers one.
- 2:07:43Schlitz, Milwaukee in the world.
- 2:07:46You only get one chance at life and you can't be afraid to live it because second chances never come.
- 2:08:11But you wouldn't have it any other way.
- 2:08:13Same with your beer, you wouldn't have it any other way either.
- 2:08:16Schlitz, why settle for less?
- 2:08:18You're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer.
- 2:08:42Bottom of the ninth inning, the Cubs six runs, 11 hits and no errors.
- 2:08:49Dodgers one run, three hits and no errors.
- 2:08:52So Papas doesn't need the six, at least the way he's been pitching for eight innings, we'll see.
- 2:08:58Crawford, Davis and Allen in the ninth.
- 2:09:10Willie fouled out, loop one to center, Brock Davis made a fine sliding catch and grounded out.
- 2:09:16He runs up the bun and takes outside, ball one, one and oh.
- 2:09:23Papas comes right back, one oh and gets a strike, one and one.
- 2:09:30Six runs, 11 hits for Chicago.
- 2:09:33One run, only three hits for the Dodgers.
- 2:09:35Two of those hits in the fourth inning when they got their only run.
- 2:09:38Crawford drives one to left center field and deep, Cleo James and Brock Davis go back.
- 2:09:42James drops it as he staggers and falls down and on his way to third is Crawford, he's in there.
- 2:10:02Cleo James caught the ball in his glove, tripped and fell down and the ball came out.
- 2:10:07And Crawford is standing at third base.
- 2:10:10It'll be a triple for Willie and the batter is Davis.
- 2:10:18For Crawford, that is his fifth triple.
- 2:10:23Willie Davis has eight.
- 2:10:27Six one Chicago, Davis lines it to center, Brock Davis in his tracks, makes the catch.
- 2:10:33Crawford tags, comes to the plate to throw off line and he scores.
- 2:10:39It is a small run however, the Cubs still lead at six to two and the batter with one precious out is Fended with Richie Allen.
- 2:10:56Richie Allen walks single to right and struck out, he's one for two.
- 2:11:00Pappas ready, delivers, Richie fouls it away on one.
- 2:11:05Mill Pappas has done just what Leo had hoped to do, what the Dodgers had hoped would happen but did not, namely a starting pitcher go along with the bullpen having the night off in the first game.
- 2:11:17For the Cubs, they desperately need it because of their schedule.
- 2:11:20The next one outside, the Cubs with a double header tonight have a double header Friday and a double header Sunday.
- 2:11:27They're really thin. One and one to Richie Allen.
- 2:11:31Six to Chicago in the ninth inning. Richie drives one to right center field and deep and that ball is going to go.
- 2:11:39A home run.
- 2:12:04The Dodgers are making noises in the ninth inning but they are still several dollars short.
- 2:12:10Richie Allen hits his 12 home run into the right center field bleachers over the 380 mark.
- 2:12:16They've scored twice in the ninth at the Dodgers but it's six to three in favor of Chicago.
- 2:12:22And the batter is West Parker.
- 2:12:26The service ready delivers and it's low. Two books of Union on auto script to the Eastside Boys Club. 324 North McDonald Avenue in Los Angeles.
- 2:12:35And two books of Union auto script to Richie Allen. And the Cubs bullpen stirs around.
- 2:12:40Parker takes the strike.
- 2:12:43Regan and Newman throwing in the Chicago 10. One and one to Parker. Duke Sims on deck.
- 2:12:49So the two in the top of the ninth have really turned out to be pretty big now as Parker hits one up the middle. Knocked down by Becker. No play. They pitch.
- 2:13:12The batter will be Duke Sims and this crowd had to be very quiet all night. And now in the ninth inning they have a chance to make some noise anyway.
- 2:13:24The Rogers off the bench. Stirring around a little bit.
- 2:13:28Here in the inning. Harvard hit a long drive over the head of Cleo James who caught the ball stumbled and fell down.
- 2:13:34Dropping the ball in the process. The one is a triple. Davis got a scoring fly ball to center.
- 2:13:39Allen Homer to right center. Parker has single up the middle. The Dodgers are still hurting very much.
- 2:13:45One out in the ninth inning. Chicago 6 and the Dodgers 3.
- 2:13:49Easing the pain in this first game at least. The knowledge that the Giants lost.
- 2:13:56Sims waiting. Half is deals and that's going to be a dunker to center. They hit. Parker stops the second.
- 2:14:21The good sense. Just hit a looper in the center field for a base hit. Two on one out.
- 2:14:27And Hickman goes to the mound on orders from the Rocher Leo.
- 2:14:33The batter is Jim Lefebvre with two on the Cubs leading six to three. So the feeder represents the tying run at the plate.
- 2:14:41However, Pappas has given him a terrible time. He struck him out twice and here comes a lion now up the steps to go out to the mound.
- 2:14:57Leo for eight and a half innings was able to sit back and watch Pappas stifle the Dodgers.
- 2:15:03And milk went into the ninth inning leading six to one. And the Dodgers have scrambled for two.
- 2:15:10They have two on with one out. Lefebvre the batter and Leo wants to talk to Pappas.
- 2:15:16Pappas this year had started 16 completed seven.
- 2:15:24Leo has Reagan and Newman in the bullpen. But he is holding court out there on the mound.
- 2:15:34And he has not given any indication of a change. If anything, he would have feared to be talking to Pappas as to how he wants milk to piss.
- 2:15:49Leo finishes up by saying, all right, huh? And Pappas answers. And Leo pats him on the back and goes walking back to the dugout.
- 2:16:01So the count to an old Leo coming out and the umpires now tell him that he has to finish.
- 2:16:08And it is first base umpire Steiner who puts his hands on Leo's chest and says he has to finish this hitter because you've already been out there talking to him on this hitter.
- 2:16:19In other words, Leo could have come out the first time with a count to an old and taken out his pitcher.
- 2:16:25But he's been there once and you cannot make two trips and change pitches with the same hitter.
- 2:16:32And the umpires are telling Leo go back to the dugout. Pappas has to pitch to Lefebvre.
- 2:16:39And Leo says, oh, I see. And he goes back to the bench.
- 2:16:47So he can now with first base open, of course, Lefebvre represents a tying run.
- 2:16:55Two balls and no strikes to count.
- 2:17:03Well, the crowd having some fun here in the ninth inning with the Dodgers still have a long road to travel and there's one out.
- 2:17:09Lefebvre waiting to an office to the wind up and the fed five or three.
- 2:17:25And all the other people have us to the wind up the three or five ball for. Now here comes Leo and now there goes.
- 2:17:40Pappas for sure. Regan and Newman in the bullpen. I think they want Regan. They do. Bill Regan will be brought in with the bases loaded. Bill Russell will run for Jimmy Lefebvre.
- 2:17:55He represents the tying run. Had the Cubs not scored two in the ninth, this place would be a madhouse.
- 2:18:04But they did. And it is six to three Chicago. The base is loaded one out.
- 2:18:11Russell running for Lefebvre and Milk Pappas comes out. Milk now comes out a little bit up in the air.
- 2:18:18He can't lose. He leaves with three on and a three run lead. He could have nothing to do with it.
- 2:18:24But Regan will be brought in to pitch to Bill Buckner. Pappas winds up walking three.
- 2:18:37Milk allowed three runs but the door is open and eight and a third in it.
- 2:18:42Seven hits and now Phil Regan slowly coming in. We've got time. Here's Jerry.
- 2:18:48We have any on the scoreboard in a wild one today at San Francisco. The Astros beat the Giants 18 to 4 with 17 hits.
- 2:18:55Durker the winner and Stone the loser. They had 10 runs in the fourth inning for Houston.
- 2:19:00They only have one report out of Pittsburgh and that game should be almost over by now.
- 2:19:04That was a first inning score five nothing in favor of the Pirates.
- 2:19:08Montreal beat New York today 12 to 7 in New York and the Mets have lost seven out of eight.
- 2:19:14There's another score out of the East and that game should be almost over one to nothing.
- 2:19:18Philadelphia that's the first inning score. Of course with a strike on we do not get too many late scores.
- 2:19:23St. Louis and San Diego later. Washington Baltimore nothing in the second.
- 2:19:27Boston beat Cleveland four to nothing first game and Cleveland leads the second game four to one.
- 2:19:32New York over and Detroit later Oakland Chicago later Kansas City Milwaukee later and the angels are playing at Minnesota.
- 2:19:39Well Dodgers and the Giants baseball's biggest rivalry and they'll be on hand coming up over the weekend.
- 2:19:45Take a tip visit a Dodger ticket office and do your shopping early.
- 2:19:48Plenty of tickets left of course but they're moving mighty fast so shop now at the Dodger office on Stadium Way at TicketCon mutual offices throughout Southern California.
- 2:19:57Friday night Saturday night Sunday with the Giants but tomorrow a lot of big work to do with the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:20:03Right now more action here's Vinnie Bill Reagan who picked up the nickname here in Los Angeles as the Vulture back in nineteen sixty six when he had the overwhelming record of 14 and one.
- 2:20:15Reagan now comes in at Dodger Stadium but wearing a club uniform in another tough penitentiary.
- 2:20:24The first thing played on by students was examined the ball.
- 2:20:29Bill Buckner with a base is loaded one out in the night the club leading six to three.
- 2:20:37Parker at third then that second Russell the tying run at first Reagan ready pitch to Buckner ground ball wide a first in the right field.
- 2:20:47In come Parker in comes in the third of Russell.
- 2:21:11Bill Buckner hit Reagan's first pitch in the right field and this place is going wild.
- 2:21:27The Dodgers have scored four with one out the Cubs lead six to five.
- 2:21:32Buckner is at first Russell is at third and Manny Moda is coming up a hit for Bobby O'Brien.
- 2:21:45The tying run 90 feet away Reagan out of a stretch the pitch to Moda ground ball to Reagan.
- 2:21:51He goes to the plate to get Russell who is tagged out by Canna zero and stopping at second is Buckner.
- 2:21:59So Moda who can go the other way about as well as anybody who ever played the game could not and hit the ball to Reagan and Russell had to come to the plate to keep the game alive.
- 2:22:11So Russell is down one to Reagan to Canna zero and now it looks like the Dodgers might be able to tie.
- 2:22:19But now it's really got to be cut in two down two on and will the batter.
- 2:22:32Maury is all for three six five Chicago first of two Reagan deals low and a good save by Canna zero ball one.
- 2:22:45So this is the ninth man to come to bat for the Dodgers here in the ninth inning.
- 2:22:50But the two they gave up in the top of the ninth is the Albatross hung around their necks now in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:22:59Buckner at second base Moda at first to out.
- 2:23:05Wills has rounded out twice slide to left and walk all of those trips against Pappas.
- 2:23:11The Dodgers lead the Dodgers playing Wills to go to left field top of its wide and just about a step up inside the bag at third.
- 2:23:20Pickman deep at first base the pitch to Wills low ball to the Dodgers led one nothing through five.
- 2:23:32The Cubs led four to one through eight and the Cubs got two in the ninth to lead six to one.
- 2:23:37And the Dodgers have scored four to make it six five Chicago to out to an old Amore Wills Buckner and Moda on the line Reagan ready to to hope it's a strike.
- 2:23:49Don't want to forget if you're anywhere in the area.
- 2:23:57You've got plenty of time for the second game and that should be a Lulu Doyle Alexander and Juan Pizarro.
- 2:24:05But this first one is still alive.
- 2:24:08Two and one to Wills Reagan ready and deals and is a high bouncer back in the man's pathway.
- 2:24:14No way the bases are loaded.
- 2:24:28Let's pause the station identification.
- 2:24:30This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 2:24:49The Dodgers have put on a tremendous show here in the ninth inning win or lose.
- 2:24:55Why have they gotten off the floor.
- 2:24:57They've got six to one they've scored four times to make it six to five and with two out the bases are loaded.
- 2:25:07The Dodgers have already had the tying run cut down at the plate and now Willie Crawford up there and everything on the line Reagan out of a wind up the pitch to Willie a strike.
- 2:25:20The center at third the tying run motor at second will set first.
- 2:25:28Dodgers have had four singles a triple and a home run in the ninth inning strike one fit swung on and missed and the bottom dropped out of that sinker.
- 2:25:36Oh and to the proper.
- 2:25:40Willie is the 10th man to come to the plate.
- 2:25:49He's got a half a dozen hits in the night but here comes Reagan strike to pitch his low ball on Dodgers has scored four runs on six hits.
- 2:26:01But the Cubs lead six to five.
- 2:26:04The pressure was the hopper hit right back to Reagan by motor one to fit got him swinging.
- 2:26:10Yep.
- 2:26:11And that's what you do by Canada Chris apparently juggled either the pitch or the foul tip but he whirled around and held it high in the air and then stood all called Crawford out so that I just kept throwing punches till the end.
- 2:26:30But when it was all over the two runs they had given up in the top of the ninth were too much to climb over the totals and the lock up shop on the first one.
- 2:26:39Yeah.
- 2:26:4211 hits at no errors the winning pitcher no purpose and the Cubs left seven men on the bases for the Dodgers five runs no hits nine hits and no errors and the Dodgers lined up leaving five men on and the losing pitcher was our downing.
- 2:26:56So downing is 10 and five and papas is nine and eight but boy was it easy for the Cubs as the Dodgers battle right back into that ninth inning after using two in the top of the night came back with four had the tying run cut down on the plate on a
- 2:27:09tapper back to the box by Mota then reloaded the bases only to have Crawford go down on strikes on a good hard sinker by Phil Regan. So you have to give Regan credit he came in there and did a tough job on a tough hitter after yielding a base hit the Bruckner and an infield hit the wheels.
- 2:27:26The second game goes down the Dodgers lose it by a score of six to five so they are again three and a half back they have to look over their shoulder now as they are only three and a half ahead of Houston. Well that's it the final score of the first game the Cubs six the Dodgers five.
