- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Isaiah chapter 38, Isaiah chapter 38, and we're
- 0:25going to see in this particular chapter God do something
- 0:30miraculous. We're going to see a recognition
- 0:34of the fact that God determines our days and our times when we
- 0:39breathe our very last breath. And I believe that this will be
- 0:45a challenging and hopefully encouraging portion of Scripture
- 0:49for us. Let's read together in Isaiah 38
- 0:53and verse #1. In those days, Hezekiah became
- 0:57terminally ill. So this actually takes place, as
- 1:01we'll see, down in verse #6 this would likely take place prior to
- 1:07the events of chapters 36 and 37.
- 1:11So it's, if you will, one way to read that is in the days that
- 1:16Hezekiah became terminally ill, the prophet Isaiah and so on and
- 1:20so forth. So this would happen
- 1:22chronologically prior to chapters 36 and 37.
- 1:27This is looking back at something that occurred in
- 1:31Hezekiah's life. So in those days Hezekiah became
- 1:35terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah, son of Amos,
- 1:38came to him and said, this is what you always says, set your
- 1:43house in order, for you are about to die, you will not
- 1:48recover. So what would you do in that
- 1:52moment? If God says all right, your time
- 1:54is up and so you need to set things in order, you know, write
- 1:59your will. Actually, I'll, I'll toss this
- 2:03in there because I've, I've done a couple of funerals even over
- 2:06the past three weeks or so from the time of recording.
- 2:11If it is at all in your power to do so well before you are on
- 2:20your final moments or death's doorstep, put together the
- 2:25things that your family will need for your funeral or
- 2:31memorial service one day. If you have a song that if it
- 2:36was like your last hurrah, like either your favorite song or the
- 2:40song that maybe communicates to your saved and or unsaved family
- 2:46and friends the thing that they need to know about the Lord or
- 2:50about heaven or about the afterlife or about receiving
- 2:53Jesus. Just like pick that out
- 2:56beforehand. Any portions of scripture that
- 3:00you really want people to know. Maybe it's John 14 and Jesus
- 3:03talking about. I go to prepare a place for you.
- 3:08Maybe it would be First Corinthians 15 that because of
- 3:13Jesus, death is just the seed being planted in the ground and
- 3:18one day we are raised with new bodies that are not just the
- 3:23physical, but our spiritual and physical and so we can have joy
- 3:29and anticipation of the future because of the resurrection that
- 3:32is coming. Maybe Psalm 116 precious in the
- 3:37sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints.
- 3:40One of those things like pick out versus passages, songs,
- 3:46those things that are most important to you.
- 3:49If I could really challenge you either in video recording or in
- 3:55writing, write down what you would want those at your funeral
- 3:59to know about Jesus. Like do that.
- 4:04Do it as soon as possible. I don't know if I will have
- 4:09tomorrow. I hope I have 10,000 tomorrow's.
- 4:13I don't know how long that is. I don't really feel like doing
- 4:16math on Tabernacle talk today. He might be like Brian.
- 4:19That only puts you at like, you know, 40 years old.
- 4:22Not the point. We don't know how much time we
- 4:25have going into the future. And so put your affairs in order
- 4:30now so that one day when it comes time for your service,
- 4:34your loved ones, they aren't having to come up with things
- 4:36out of the blue. And that you have the plan for
- 4:40that day when you get to share the gospel.
- 4:43And it really doesn't matter what people's reactions to it
- 4:47are because you're already gone. You're already with the Lord.
- 4:50And I would encourage strongly every Christian to have that
- 4:54planned out, even as a pastor. That is phenomenally helpful for
- 5:00me because sometimes even as I'm, you know, preparing
- 5:05services and things, funerals, especially for those in our
- 5:08community, they don't really know what was most in the heart
- 5:15of their loved one as it related to their faith.
- 5:18If they're calling me their loved 1 had some sort of faith
- 5:23journey, belief in the Lord, reading of Scripture, church
- 5:29attendance, those types of things, but they don't know what
- 5:31their loved one's personal walk with the Lord was.
- 5:34And so I want to encourage you write those things down because
- 5:37that can be one of the most powerful gospel testimonies that
- 5:43someone will ever experience is at the service of a loved one
- 5:48who has passed. And if you will, from beyond the
- 5:51grave is speaking these wonderful truths of the gospel
- 5:56and of the needed relationship with the Lord to them one last
- 5:59time. So I really want to encourage
- 6:01you to do that. That is a giant rabbit trail.
- 6:03I am so sorry, but it didn't make me think of that.
- 6:08As he says, you know, set your affairs in order because you're
- 6:10going to die. I would encourage you to do the
- 6:13same thing. If you have any questions about
- 6:15that, please reach out to me. My e-mail is pastor at TBCS dot
- 6:23com. Once again, that's pastor at
- 6:26tbces.sex.com. And I would love to walk with
- 6:31you through that process of what a memorial service would look
- 6:35like. Get it set now.
- 6:37If you want to make any changes in the next 40 to 50 years,
- 6:40wonderful, let's do it. But I would rather you be able
- 6:44to have something and know for sure that what you are looking
- 6:50for in your home going is, is, is what would take place.
- 6:56So let me get back on track. Now we are with Hezekiah.
- 7:00He's been told by God that he's going to die.
- 7:03Verse #2 Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed
- 7:06to Yahweh. He said, please Yahweh, remember
- 7:09how I have walked before you faithfully and wholeheartedly
- 7:13and have done what pleases you. And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
- 7:17Hezekiah doesn't want to go. And so he asked if God would
- 7:20remember his walk that he's had with him.
- 7:23And he's crying. Verse #4 Then the word of Yahweh
- 7:26came to Isaiah. Go and tell Hezekiah, this is
- 7:30what Yahweh, God of your ancestor David says.
- 7:33I've heard your prayer. I've seen your tears.
- 7:36Look, I'm going to add 15 years to your life and I will rescue
- 7:41you and this city from the grasp of the king of Assyria.
- 7:44I will defend this city. So God says, all right, not only
- 7:49are you not going to, you know, die eminently, you're actually
- 7:53going to live an additional 15 years.
- 7:56This is the sign to you from Yahweh that he will do what he
- 7:59has promised. I'm going to make the sun's
- 8:01shadow that goes down on the stairway.
- 8:03They has go back by 10 steps. So the sun went back the 10
- 8:08steps it had descended. So here, I've mentioned this
- 8:12before on the podcast. I want to make sure that I
- 8:14mention it again because I've heard some kooky things through
- 8:16the years. We recognize with the gifts that
- 8:21we have now of satellites, cameras, etcetera, that the sun
- 8:27going backwards wouldn't actually do anything to the
- 8:30shadow. Here God is utilizing the
- 8:33understanding, verbiage and language that these people would
- 8:38have known and used to express truth.
- 8:43So here though, this is not, if you will, scientifically
- 8:46accurate that the sun going back, that wouldn't make any
- 8:50change on the shadow by understanding of the people of
- 8:55the time, this is what they would have perceived to have
- 8:58been the case. So God's word is inerrant, it's
- 9:02infallible, it's true in everything that it speaks to,
- 9:05and it uses language that was attainable and understood by the
- 9:09people of the time. That's about what I'll say
- 9:15there. At that moment in Joshua, I
- 9:18think it's Joshua 10 is the other location in which we see
- 9:22the same type of thing described.
- 9:26And so I want to make sure that I encourage you guys to think
- 9:31rightly about the word and think rightly about the authors and
- 9:35the times in which they lived. It would be somewhat
- 9:40hypocritical for us to judge knowing everything that we know
- 9:43now them for what they did not know.
- 9:47Also, we fully believe that Scripture very rarely only in
- 9:51the moments that God specifically says like hey, this
- 9:55is what the Lord says blank. It would be or the Holy Spirit
- 10:02did not dictate into the ears or minds of the writers of
- 10:07Scripture what they were to write.
- 10:11And so they wrote in their grammar, their vocabulary, their
- 10:16personality, such that what they wrote was exactly what God
- 10:21wanted communicated, but God did not, if you will, overwhelm or
- 10:28possess them so that they were not understanding what was being
- 10:33written. Sometimes they saw things that
- 10:35were difficult to understand, and so they wrote those.
- 10:38And you can look even at Daniel's prophecies and John's
- 10:42prophecies, and they specifically say that they're
- 10:46like, hey, I saw some stuff and here's the best I can do in
- 10:49describing what that looked like.
- 10:52And so have a, if you will, a hospitality to the scriptural
- 10:58writers that you take them at their particular stage of
- 11:03understanding. And so I want to say that if you
- 11:05have any questions on that, please let me know.
- 11:08I know that some people have taken those types of statements
- 11:15and truths and extrapolated them out way too far so that
- 11:20Scripture is not believable at all or truthful in any of the
- 11:24miraculous things that it states, even extending to the
- 11:28virgin birth, the flood, different things like that.
- 11:31I would hold to Scripture as being true in those moments when
- 11:36it would seem that there's a disconnect between, if you will,
- 11:41science and Scripture here, the location and rotation of the
- 11:46sun. I know that God's word is true
- 11:50and I know that Scripture does not speak things that are false,
- 11:53so it would it would follow either I do not understand
- 11:56science enough yet or the people that are writing this are
- 12:02writing based on their understanding of what is taking
- 12:07place. And because the Holy Spirit
- 12:09inspired it, then that means that I can believe in it as
- 12:13trustworthy, and that He deals with humans in their
- 12:17imperfection to bring about what is actually true.
- 12:22So going to go from there. Verse #9 A poem by King Hezekiah
- 12:26of Judah after he had been sick and had recovered from his
- 12:29illness. I said in the prime of my life,
- 12:32I must go to the gates of the grave.
- 12:34I'm deprived of the rest of my years.
- 12:36I said I will never see Yahweh, Yahweh in the land of the
- 12:41living. I will not look on humanity any
- 12:44longer with the inhabitants of what is passing away.
- 12:49My dwelling is plucked up and removed from me like a
- 12:53shepherd's tent. I've rolled up my life like a
- 12:55Weaver. He cuts me off from the loom.
- 12:59By nightfall you make an end of me.
- 13:01I thought. Until the morning He will break
- 13:03all my bones like a lion. By nightfall you make an end of
- 13:07me. I chirp like a swallow or a
- 13:09crane. I I moan like a dove.
- 13:11My eyes grow weak, looking upward.
- 13:14Lord, I am oppressed. Support me.
- 13:17So here there's this description of going down to death, of being
- 13:21in pain, of feeling like your body is wasting away and leaving
- 13:26you behind, that you are going to the grave.
- 13:29Verse #15 What can I say? He's spoken to me, and He
- 13:33himself has done it. I walk along slowly all my years
- 13:37because of the bitterness of my soul.
- 13:39Lord, by such things people live, and in every one of them
- 13:42my spirit finds life. You've restored me to health and
- 13:46let me live. Indeed, it was for my own
- 13:49well-being that I had such intense bitterness.
- 13:51But your love has delivered me from the pit of destruction.
- 13:55For you thrown all my sins behind your back.
- 13:59For the grave can't thank you. Death cannot praise you.
- 14:02Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your
- 14:04faithfulness. The living, only the living can
- 14:07thank you. As I do today.
- 14:09A father will make your faithfulness known to children.
- 14:13Yahweh is ready to save me. We will play stringed
- 14:15instruments all the days of our lives at the House of Yahweh.
- 14:21Here. As I've mentioned before, even
- 14:23in the Psalms there is not the same understanding of the grave
- 14:28and what would take place after death.
- 14:32Hear from Hezekiah or even as I've been going through Job,
- 14:36there wasn't the same understanding of what happens at
- 14:38death as then Jesus comes and He communicates the truth to us so
- 14:43that Paul would tell us to be absent from the body is to be
- 14:47present with the Lord. Or as Jesus tells us, He
- 14:51ascended to the Father so that where He is, we would be also.
- 14:56And what a joy that that is. So even here are some of the
- 14:59statements of like, oh, those that are dead can't praise you,
- 15:02and they can't thank you unless they're alive.
- 15:05We would read from the rest of the Scripture.
- 15:07No, we are gathered to the Lord and we surround his throne and
- 15:11we worship Him and His Holiness and for the redemption that He
- 15:14has provided for us. And what a joy that that is.
- 15:20Verse #21 And 22 at the conclusion of this chapter,
- 15:24saying, now Isaiah had said, let them take a lump of pressed figs
- 15:27and apply it to his infected skin so that he may recover.
- 15:30And Hezekiah had asked, what's the sign that I will go up to
- 15:34Yahweh's temple? Basically that I'm going to get
- 15:37better and that I can go worship the Lord.
- 15:39And so Isaiah here, it's not just that he prays, it's prayer
- 15:45matched with a actual physical remedy here, the pressed figs
- 15:50applied to the infected skin. As I have encouraged you guys
- 15:57before, I think it was even from First Timothy chapter 5, maybe
- 16:03don't be afraid of medicine. Don't be afraid of doctors.
- 16:05They will not always get it right.
- 16:07Sometimes they will get it wrong, and that's OK.
- 16:09You and I get things wrong at our job all the time.
- 16:13I'm a pastor, so hopefully I get it.
- 16:15I, I get some aspects of my job wrong less than other aspects.
- 16:20Hopefully I'm theologically true, but where was I headed
- 16:25with that? Oh, so be open to receiving and
- 16:29pairing medical assistance with your prayers here.
- 16:33God used both of these within the life of Hezekiah.
- 16:38What do we make from this chapter #1 God can answer prayer
- 16:42and you can pray for healing and sometimes God will grant it.
- 16:46Notice Hezekiah is not still around.
- 16:48So God didn't grant him immortality, but he granted him
- 16:51a little more time. And so I encourage you to pray
- 16:54to the Lord. Do set your affairs in order.
- 16:57Strongly encourage that. If you have any questions about
- 17:00that comment DM e-mail me pastor at tbces.sex.com.
- 17:04I would love to help with that. God's word is trustworthy and it
- 17:10is true and God cares about and even speaks through some of our
- 17:16imperfections or misunderstandings sometimes as a
- 17:19pastor, it'll often happen. Pastor will preach a message and
- 17:23someone afterwards will be like man, it was so encouraging as I
- 17:26was thinking about blank and you're like, I didn't preach on
- 17:29blank at all. I like, I didn't say anything
- 17:31like that, but the Spirit was speaking to that person even
- 17:35through our own imperfections. And may we spend all the days
- 17:39that we do live in thankfulness, praising the Lord for who he is,
- 17:44worshipping him even as Hezekiah says in verse #20 you always
- 17:49ready to save me. We'll play stringed instruments
- 17:51all the days of our lives at the House of Yahweh.
- 17:55Thank you for tuning into this episode.
- 17:57So always, if you have any questions, let me know, like
- 18:00comment, share, subscribe, leave a review on Apple Podcasts or
- 18:05Spotify podcasts. You can comment the word sun,
- 18:09SUN comment sun. And I'll give you some
- 18:13Tabernacle talk points for making it all the way to the end
- 18:16of the episode. God bless.
- 18:18Have a wonderful day.
