- 1:04Speaker 1: but also cracks wise about pop culture. Here's a typical
- 1:08Speaker 1: tweet that was posted yesterday. There's a photo of Nolan
- 1:12Speaker 1: Ryan being carried off the field after one of his
- 1:15Speaker 1: seven no hitters, and the caption reads in five years.
- 1:19Speaker 1: This is how they'll treat you after pitching six innings.

- 1:31Speaker 1: that the words sweet bastard makes nearly any sentence funnier. Now,
- 1:37Speaker 1: time to get to Day three of the draft, where
- 1:39Speaker 1: the bengals first and only offensive players selected this year
- 1:43Speaker 1: was taken in the fourth round offensive lineman Cordell Volson
- 1:48Speaker 1: from North Dakota State. He's six six, three hundred fifteen
- 1:51Speaker 1: pounds and played mostly tackled for the Bison. But Frank
- 1:55Speaker 1: Pollock thinks he'll be a guard in the NFL. He's
- 2:00Speaker 1: he's a he's physical, he's a finisher. You'll you'll see
- 2:03Speaker 1: him pull out on the perimeter and run pretty well,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and he's productive out in space when he did pull um.
- 2:10Speaker 1: He comes from a winning, winning team, winning culture. You
- 2:14Speaker 1: love his intangibles. I mean he's a worker. That's kind
- 2:18Speaker 1: of how he was raised. That's what you're looking for,
- 2:21Speaker 1: you know. Frank mentioned intangibles and was asked how much
- 2:24Speaker 1: emphasis he puts on that in evaluating prospects. For me,
- 2:29Speaker 1: that's like line one. If you know a line two
- 2:32Speaker 1: at worst line three in my room. I mean, you
- 2:34Speaker 1: got to have guys that have intangibles, the work ethic,
- 2:39Speaker 1: you know what are they made up? What's their mental
- 2:41Speaker 1: toughnesster grit? Can they learn? Can they process fast? You know,
- 2:45Speaker 1: with the way that we run our scheme on offense,
- 2:48Speaker 1: the defense is going to move and shift. We're gonna
- 2:49Speaker 1: invite them to do that with our motions that we utilize.
- 2:53Speaker 1: So you got people to think like this, react, adjust,
- 2:56Speaker 1: and then go play fast. And then so all that
- 3:00Speaker 1: is it goes into the makeup. You know, we're not
- 3:02Speaker 1: just showing him a card and go block that guy.
- 3:04Speaker 1: There's a lot of guys who excel at that. But
- 3:06Speaker 1: once the it goes live, the pictures starts changing on him.
- 3:10Speaker 1: You know, their play goes down. So that's huge to me.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And when a guy needs to develop, he's not going
- 3:17Speaker 1: to develop to the maximum ability if he doesn't have
- 3:19Speaker 1: all those intangibles. I mean, this league is a son
- 3:22Speaker 1: of a you know what, and to make it you
- 3:25Speaker 1: gotta have some you know what in your neck. You
- 3:27Speaker 1: gotta have some grit or you're not gonna make it.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I mean, I've been in this a long time as
- 3:32Speaker 1: a player, a horrible player, but as a and as
- 3:36Speaker 1: a coach, okay, And there was guys that you see
- 3:39Speaker 1: come and go that are so talented and got they're
- 3:41Speaker 1: off the charts, measurables and you're like, man, I come
- 3:44Speaker 1: not guy didn't make it. He was, you know, he
- 3:46Speaker 1: was in the league two three years. It's because he
- 3:47Speaker 1: don't have the other stuff that to me and the
- 3:49Speaker 1: old I'm just talking offensive line play. It's critical. It's critical.
- 3:53Speaker 1: If you don't have that, you got no chance. I
- 3:55Speaker 1: don't care how big you are, how pretty you look,
- 3:57Speaker 1: how fast you run, and none of that matters. That's
- 4:00Speaker 1: just the reality of it. Voltstan will get a chance
- 4:02Speaker 1: to compete for the open spot it left guard and
- 4:05Speaker 1: joins free agents Alex Kappa, Ted Carriss and El Collins
- 4:09Speaker 1: on a rebuilt offensive line. Here's offensive coordinator Brian Callahan. Oh,
- 4:14Speaker 1: I can't wait to see these guys get together. You know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: it's a it's a collection of personalities that we're really
- 4:19Speaker 1: high on that we think are going to mesh together great.
- 4:23Speaker 1: You know, between Carris and Kappa, those two who have
- 4:26Speaker 1: been in town, they're already working out. I mean, those
- 4:29Speaker 1: are the guys that that We're excited to see elc
- 4:31Speaker 1: you'll be here at some point too very soon, and
- 4:34Speaker 1: to see those guys get in the room and start
- 4:35Speaker 1: to compete and start to build that camaraderie. And I
- 4:37Speaker 1: think when you talk to Frank, one of the biggest
- 4:40Speaker 1: parts about the offensive line, excuse me, different than really
- 4:42Speaker 1: probably any position, is the way that unit comes together,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, with those five starting guys, and the personality
- 4:49Speaker 1: they take on together as a as a unit, as
- 4:52Speaker 1: a room is really important. And I think we've added
- 4:55Speaker 1: the types of players that are going to contribute to
- 4:59Speaker 1: bolstering that mentality in our room that we're looking for.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And I'm excited for the competition. I think that that's
- 5:05Speaker 1: going to really raise the level, raise the boats, if
- 5:08Speaker 1: you will, the guys in the room try to get
- 5:10Speaker 1: the best out of all of them. And I'm excited
- 5:12Speaker 1: for that competition to start. I'm excited for those guys
- 5:15Speaker 1: to get together, and I'm can't wait to see what
- 5:17Speaker 1: our line looks like this year and compared to what
- 5:21Speaker 1: we've had in the past, and I'm really excited about it.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I think Frank, you probably feel the same way. With
- 5:25Speaker 1: our auditions that we've made so it's it's it's exciting.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I'm I'm'm sure Frank can't wait to get his hands
- 5:30Speaker 1: on him all together and get get coaching and teaching
- 5:33Speaker 1: and get back on the grass. But I'm excited. I
- 5:36Speaker 1: think we've done a lot of good things for that
- 5:37Speaker 1: for that room. Over the course of this offseason, Olson
- 5:40Speaker 1: was selected number one thirty six overall. That's higher than
- 5:44Speaker 1: where he was projected to go by Pro Football Focus
- 5:47Speaker 1: and the Athletics Dane Bruegler, largely because he's not a
- 5:51Speaker 1: great athlete, but he played every position but center during
- 5:54Speaker 1: his six years at North Dakota State and was a
- 5:57Speaker 1: three time FCS All American. I'm a I'm a physical
- 6:01Speaker 1: player that that you know, pride myself on being the
- 6:04Speaker 1: hardest worker in the room. He's just going to come
- 6:07Speaker 1: in and work hard, um and uh, you know, just
- 6:11Speaker 1: just continue to play through to and through the echo
- 6:14Speaker 1: of the whistle, and you know, just just imposed my
- 6:17Speaker 1: will every snap and you know, be a relentless physical player.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And he's looking forward to playing for a coach who
- 6:23Speaker 1: loves glass eaters in Frank Pollock. That's the type of
- 6:26Speaker 1: player that you're going to get with me, and you
- 6:28Speaker 1: know to play offensive line, I think you gotta be
- 6:30Speaker 1: wired just a little bit different. And you know that
- 6:33Speaker 1: that's the way that I am, and and have an
- 6:35Speaker 1: opportunity to play for a coach, it's the same way.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I'm really looking forward to that. In the fifth round,
- 6:40Speaker 1: the Bengals traded up, sending their fifth round pick and
- 6:44Speaker 1: a seventh round selection to the Bears in order to
- 6:47Speaker 1: move up eight spots where they drafted University of Toledo's
- 6:50Speaker 1: safety Tyson Anderson. Here's defensive coordinator lou Ana Romo. Another big,
- 6:56Speaker 1: you know measurable guy, right, so, height, weight, speed, the
- 6:59Speaker 1: way you heasy game. He's smart, gives us again the
- 7:03Speaker 1: flexibility do a bunch of different things. So he's uh,
- 7:08Speaker 1: he was very intriguing to me. We did a great
- 7:11Speaker 1: job going to get him. Selecting Anderson marked the third
- 7:14Speaker 1: time in five rounds that the Bengals added speed to
- 7:16Speaker 1: their secondary. First round draft pick Dax Hill and second
- 7:20Speaker 1: rounder cam Taylor Britt each ran a four three eight
- 7:24Speaker 1: forty at the combine, and Anderson top that by running
- 7:28Speaker 1: a four three six. Here's Anna Rumo on the need
- 7:31Speaker 1: for speed in today's NFL. We're gonna play a bunch
- 7:36Speaker 1: of great receivers as we all know. You know, think
- 7:39Speaker 1: about Miami's speed on their perimeter, right with Tyreek and
- 7:43Speaker 1: Waddle and the guys in our division. You know, there's
- 7:47Speaker 1: there's speed everywhere. So especially in the back end, those
- 7:52Speaker 1: guys are gonna get out of position some just by
- 7:54Speaker 1: the nature of their jobs, and if they can't get
- 7:57Speaker 1: back into the play, you know they're gonna struggle. So
- 8:01Speaker 1: these guys do have the makeup and recovery speed, um,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and that's what we're looking for with those additions to
- 8:06Speaker 1: the secondary, plus guys like Trey Hendrickson upfront and Logan
- 8:10Speaker 1: Wilson at linebacker. Does Anna Rumo think he has one
- 8:14Speaker 1: of the fastest defenses in the NFL? I would like
- 8:17Speaker 1: to think. So. You know, we've got some guys at
- 8:19Speaker 1: each level, as you mentioned, that can really run. And
- 8:23Speaker 1: that's uh, that's that's where this game has gotten too.
- 8:26Speaker 1: In addition to being fast, Tyson Adderson is smart. He's
- 8:30Speaker 1: just a few classes away from earning a master's degree
- 8:33Speaker 1: in leadership. I think my biggest strength, honestly is my
- 8:36Speaker 1: like mine intelligence, my football IQ. That's my biggest strength.
- 8:39Speaker 1: My smarts and bit of ability to adapt on the
- 8:42Speaker 1: fly and just line fast. Darren Simmons was undoubtedly excited
- 8:47Speaker 1: by this pick, since the speedy Adderson played nearly nine
- 8:50Speaker 1: hundred special team snaps at Toledo. He also fits the
- 8:54Speaker 1: organization's recent emphasis on drafting leaders, since Tyson was voted
- 8:58Speaker 1: team captain three times in college. I just I just
- 9:02Speaker 1: take it serious. To be honest, I know I'm a leader.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I know my voice needs to be heard, and I
- 9:07Speaker 1: know when I stand up and say something that's gonna
- 9:09Speaker 1: be the right thing. And I'm just excited to be honest.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Since the Bengals traded out of the sixth round and
- 9:16Speaker 1: also traded their first pick in the seventh, their final
- 9:19Speaker 1: selection in the seventh round number two fifty two overall
- 9:22Speaker 1: was edge rusher Jeffrey Gunter out of Coastal Carolina, who
- 9:27Speaker 1: was projected to be taken one round earlier by Dane Brugler.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The six four, two hundred and fifty eight pounder posted
- 9:34Speaker 1: good speed and strength numbers at the Combine and had
- 9:37Speaker 1: eighteen sacks over his last three seasons. Here's Zach Taylor.
- 9:41Speaker 1: You know, I have not personally spoken to him, but
- 9:43Speaker 1: the coaches that have, you know, with Marion and Duff
- 9:46Speaker 1: really like like his personality and I feel really good
- 9:49Speaker 1: about him. So speaking to him on the phone, I
- 9:50Speaker 1: know he was he was really excited to be here.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And so the reports are all that he's a tremendous kid.
- 9:57Speaker 1: The staff, they're really enjoyed having him, and we think
- 10:00Speaker 1: that he provides some value for us, you know, in
- 10:02Speaker 1: the seventh round, it's we're happy to get him there
- 10:05Speaker 1: after taking an inside pass rusher in the third round
- 10:08Speaker 1: and Zach Carter Gunter adds an outside pass rusher from
- 10:12Speaker 1: a school that went twenty two and three over the
- 10:15Speaker 1: last two years. You know, he's played effectively for them
- 10:19Speaker 1: at Coastal and they've had a great team. That's a
- 10:21Speaker 1: team I followed from AFAR for a number of years
- 10:24Speaker 1: now just because they've done such a tremendous job. I
- 10:28Speaker 1: think they're really innovative both sides the ball with their schemes.
- 10:31Speaker 1: They've had a ton of success. They're now starting to
- 10:34Speaker 1: have some players come out of there, and and it's
- 10:37Speaker 1: one of those programs when when guys come out, because
- 10:40Speaker 1: I remember one that came out last year and you
- 10:42Speaker 1: can just tell they're they're made of the right stuff.
- 10:44Speaker 1: They've had high standards there at that program, They've been
- 10:46Speaker 1: coached the right way, their expectations are to win. So
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's exciting when you evaluate players from programs like that
- 10:53Speaker 1: that come into the building and they know that there's
- 10:54Speaker 1: gonna be high expectations for him, and so that's certainly
- 10:57Speaker 1: a trait that he's got. I think that he's a
- 11:00Speaker 1: again one of those guys that's gonna ask some versatility
- 11:01Speaker 1: to that room. And but but he's more of an
- 11:04Speaker 1: outside guy as opposed to an inside guy for us.
- 11:06Speaker 1: So the definition of what his role is, it's that's
- 11:09Speaker 1: really hard to say. He's gonna jump in there and
- 11:12Speaker 1: provide competition for our guys that play more outside than inside,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and we'll just see where we fit him from there.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Doctor says playing at Coastal Carol Lineup prepared him for
- 11:21Speaker 1: the challenges ahead and trying to make the Bengals roster.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna say something that's a little little different. Man.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Nobody wants to go to Coastal. And the reason I
- 11:29Speaker 1: say that is because everybody wants to go to Alabama, Clemson,
- 11:32Speaker 1: all that, and the players that Coastal are the same
- 11:34Speaker 1: way we go to Coast because they would only want
- 11:36Speaker 1: to give us the opportunity. And you know that's what
- 11:38Speaker 1: I carry out of the Bengals. I gotta tip of
- 11:40Speaker 1: my shoulder the size of a boulder, and I'm gonna
- 11:42Speaker 1: just take that to pranks from me every day, Take
- 11:43Speaker 1: that to every rep, take that to every place, you know.
- 11:46Speaker 1: And that's what the Coastal brought me. Man, the tip
- 11:48Speaker 1: of my shoulder, and it tells me how to work.
- 11:50Speaker 1: So that's why I'm bringing in to Bengals. Gunter was
- 11:52Speaker 1: a two star recruit coming out of high school and
- 11:54Speaker 1: weighed one hundred eighty five pounds as a senior. Now
- 11:59Speaker 1: he's an NFL fell draft pick. Man, I'll go maybe
- 12:02Speaker 1: cry I beaming. I've been dreaming day since I was
- 12:07Speaker 1: eight years old. I used to I used to be
- 12:08Speaker 1: a I used to be five. You know what I'm saying.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I would watch America's game like back to back to
- 12:12Speaker 1: back on Inshide Networks, and it's just like seeing my
- 12:15Speaker 1: name go across that screen. It's just everything I did
- 12:17Speaker 1: was worth it. You know. He's an easy guy to
- 12:20Speaker 1: root for. The Bengals. Booth podcast is presented by Ultimate Bengals.
- 12:25Speaker 1: They're free to play fantasy football game. This past season,
- 12:28Speaker 1: Ultimate Bengals awarded a weekly winner during the course of
- 12:31Speaker 1: the year with tickets, autograph merchandise, and money can't buy
- 12:35Speaker 1: experiences all up for grabs. Find Ultimate Bengals in the
- 12:39Speaker 1: app Store and Google Play. Now time to bring in
- 12:43Speaker 1: my broadcast partner Dave Lapham for a look at Day
- 12:45Speaker 1: three and some thoughts on the entire class. Lap The
- 12:50Speaker 1: Bengals went into the draft with eight picks. They wound
- 12:53Speaker 1: up having six after trading up twice. What stands out
- 12:57Speaker 1: to you about the six guys they wound up selecting. Well,
- 13:00Speaker 1: I think, first of all, I think in a lot
- 13:03Speaker 1: of people's opinion, and I think the Bengals opinion, it
- 13:05Speaker 1: was probably justified that it was a thin draft, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 1: so they were going for quality rather than quantity, and
- 13:12Speaker 1: when they targeted somebody that they really felt could help
- 13:16Speaker 1: them and not necessarily an area of need. I think
- 13:20Speaker 1: need might be a little strong, but definitely areas you
- 13:23Speaker 1: wanted to get better at and add to depth. They
- 13:26Speaker 1: didn't hesitate, and they moved up twice to get you know,
- 13:30Speaker 1: to get players, and obviously in free agency they attacked
- 13:36Speaker 1: an area of need in the offensive line, and in
- 13:38Speaker 1: the draft they attacked the secondary. So those were two
- 13:42Speaker 1: areas that they felt they wanted to improve and better
- 13:44Speaker 1: those entire position groups, and they went about it, and
- 13:49Speaker 1: I think in a successful way. So I joked in
- 13:52Speaker 1: a story I wrote on Bengals dot Com that I
- 13:54Speaker 1: think that Tom Cruise character Maverick from the movie Top
- 13:58Speaker 1: Gun was in the Benk draft room. Because they felt
- 14:02Speaker 1: the need the need for speed. They drafted two guys
- 14:06Speaker 1: who ran a four three eight forty. They ran, They
- 14:09Speaker 1: drafted a guy who ran a four to three six forty.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Their last pick in the seventh round was about a
- 14:14Speaker 1: two hundred and sixty pound guy ran a four seven forty.
- 14:16Speaker 1: They got faster in this draft they did. They did
- 14:19Speaker 1: I think as a as a defensive unit, they definitely
- 14:24Speaker 1: in all levels really they have some good team speed.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I mean Logan Wilson, M Davis Gaither, those guys can
- 14:32Speaker 1: run at linebacker, Sam Hubbard Hendrickson, these guys can move,
- 14:36Speaker 1: they can run h and as a result, lou Anna
- 14:39Speaker 1: Rumo will you know, use them in different ways, will
- 14:43Speaker 1: take advantage of that athleticism, the versatility of that athleticism,
- 14:48Speaker 1: and designed some some things that you don't see on
- 14:51Speaker 1: an everyday basis or every week basis in the National
- 14:54Speaker 1: Football League. So that's a big advantage. And he added
- 14:57Speaker 1: to it. I mean, it's like, uh, he has more
- 15:00Speaker 1: spies than the CIA and the FBI spy candidates everywhere,
- 15:04Speaker 1: There's no question about it, at every level of that
- 15:07Speaker 1: defensive football team. So yeah, I think they definitely increased
- 15:12Speaker 1: their overall team speed. And there's always a trickle down
- 15:15Speaker 1: effect to Darren Simmons too. Whenever you have a roster
- 15:18Speaker 1: that has increased its team speed at positions you like
- 15:22Speaker 1: in the secondary, those guys give Darren Simmons special team
- 15:27Speaker 1: snap so they get faster there as well, which I'm
- 15:30Speaker 1: sure Darren doesn't have a problem within any way, shape
- 15:33Speaker 1: or form. The other thing that you know struck me
- 15:38Speaker 1: is I remember Paul Brown every single training camp in
- 15:42Speaker 1: his message, which was the same message, by the way,
- 15:46Speaker 1: every year at training camp, talking about this significance and
- 15:49Speaker 1: importance of intelligence and overall intelligence and more importantly football intelligence.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And you've got a lot of guys that sometimes probably
- 16:02Speaker 1: because of COVID, having the extra year of eligibility gave
- 16:05Speaker 1: them an extra year to get the school work done,
- 16:08Speaker 1: and you have a lot of guys that cut degrees,
- 16:10Speaker 1: a lot of guys are finishing graduate degrees, and some
- 16:14Speaker 1: even have the graduate degrees. And then you've got guys
- 16:17Speaker 1: who were captains, two time captains and even a three
- 16:20Speaker 1: time captain. So some of the things that they've found,
- 16:24Speaker 1: you know, work for them to have a checklist of
- 16:27Speaker 1: guys to add to the culture and be able to
- 16:30Speaker 1: make a contribution to the football team in areas the
- 16:33Speaker 1: most importantly, it's got to be on the football field,
- 16:35Speaker 1: what are you doing there? But if you can you
- 16:38Speaker 1: add pieces to the culture off the football field, in
- 16:42Speaker 1: the locker room, in the community, that's all big two.
- 16:45Speaker 1: All right, Let's look specifically at the three guys that
- 16:48Speaker 1: they drafted on the final day, beginning with fourth round
- 16:50Speaker 1: draft pick offensive lineman Cordell Vulson six six, three hundred
- 16:56Speaker 1: and fifteen pounds. Not thought to be a great athlete,
- 16:59Speaker 1: but very productive player at North Dakota State, three times
- 17:02Speaker 1: first team All Conference, he started his last forty one games.
- 17:07Speaker 1: He had the best pass blocking grades at the Shrine Bowl,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and obviously a guy that Frank Pollock really seemed to like. Yeah,
- 17:15Speaker 1: I mean, here's a guy that's a three time FCS
- 17:19Speaker 1: All American and his list of accomplishments. You know, every
- 17:22Speaker 1: they put out press releases in All American teams and
- 17:26Speaker 1: you know, from various platforms associated press stats perform All
- 17:32Speaker 1: American team, hero sports, athlete, sports. I mean he was,
- 17:36Speaker 1: he was first team All American in all of them.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And not only did he perform at a very high level,
- 17:43Speaker 1: but North Dakota State is a perennial dominant force. I
- 17:47Speaker 1: mean he was involved with. I mean, if you don't
- 17:49Speaker 1: want a national championship there, you stink, you know, I mean,
- 17:52Speaker 1: it's just you haven't gotten the job done. So this uh,
- 17:56Speaker 1: he appeared in a school record sixty five games and
- 17:59Speaker 1: including forty one starts, like he said, and he's played
- 18:02Speaker 1: all four positions during his career. So again, position versatility
- 18:06Speaker 1: becomes a scenario. Now he played tackle his last year,
- 18:10Speaker 1: but I think they're going to kick him inside to uh,
- 18:13Speaker 1: you know, to the guard position. Um, part of four
- 18:17Speaker 1: national championship teams during his six year career, and he's
- 18:21Speaker 1: a two time captain. So this this guy, this guy's
- 18:25Speaker 1: he's got some uh, he's got some pedigree to him. Um,
- 18:28Speaker 1: he's got good habits both personally and team achievement wise.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Uh so guys like that. Even though he didn't you know,
- 18:38Speaker 1: perform at a big you know, power five school situation
- 18:42Speaker 1: in front of a hundred thousand people, he's got some
- 18:46Speaker 1: some skins on the wall. You know, there's no there's
- 18:48Speaker 1: no question about it. And I think he's going to
- 18:50Speaker 1: be very prideful of that, and he should be. We
- 18:54Speaker 1: had a chance to visit with Frank Pollock for an
- 18:56Speaker 1: extended period of time after this election, and it was
- 18:59Speaker 1: obvious how much he likes the kid. His attitude, his
- 19:03Speaker 1: work ethic, and the intangibles. Yeah, I think nothing was
- 19:07Speaker 1: given to him, you know. Uh, his dad's got a
- 19:10Speaker 1: tremendous work ethic and this kid has a work ethic
- 19:14Speaker 1: and a blue collar mentality and nature to him. Um,
- 19:18Speaker 1: you know, I think I think he was he was
- 19:20Speaker 1: raised to believe that you're not given every anything. What
- 19:24Speaker 1: you what you uh, you have to earn it all.
- 19:27Speaker 1: It's not going to be given to you. There's no
- 19:28Speaker 1: handouts and so that that that'll that'll translate well in
- 19:32Speaker 1: Frank Pollock's room for sure. And uh, um, you know
- 19:35Speaker 1: he's right now. If i'm him, I'm thinking I'm the
- 19:40Speaker 1: only offensive player this football team drafted and there's one
- 19:44Speaker 1: position in the offensive line that's available and open. Now,
- 19:47Speaker 1: I know there are other veteran players that are going
- 19:49Speaker 1: to be competing for it, but they drafted me and
- 19:52Speaker 1: told me that I'm probably going to start my career
- 19:54Speaker 1: as a guard and that left guard job is open.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Laser focus. That's the goal. Now, you know, that's the
- 20:01Speaker 1: ultimate goal. But if you don't start as a rookie
- 20:04Speaker 1: in the National Football League, I mean, that's fine, but
- 20:07Speaker 1: that should be your ultimate goal and then other things
- 20:11Speaker 1: take place, you know, the latter of success. All right, Well,
- 20:14Speaker 1: I'm going to make the active roster on game day.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I'm going to be one of the seven or eight
- 20:20Speaker 1: offensive linemen that Frank Pollack believes that are going to
- 20:23Speaker 1: help us win football games. That's the next thing. If
- 20:26Speaker 1: you don't, you know, get the starting job. So there's
- 20:29Speaker 1: plenty of things, plenty of things for him to set
- 20:32Speaker 1: his sights on, and the way he's worked through his
- 20:34Speaker 1: entire career, I would not be surprised to see him
- 20:37Speaker 1: be a pretty high achiever. So that is fourth round
- 20:40Speaker 1: draft pick Cordell Volsen. We moved to the fifth round
- 20:44Speaker 1: and that marked the second time in the draft that
- 20:46Speaker 1: the Bengals traded up. They moved up eight spots from
- 20:48Speaker 1: one seventy four to one sixty six, made a deal
- 20:51Speaker 1: with the Bears. They gave up their fifth round pick
- 20:54Speaker 1: and also the early pick that they had in the
- 20:56Speaker 1: seventh round, the one they got from the Giants and
- 20:58Speaker 1: the Billy Price trade, and they wound up taking a
- 21:00Speaker 1: safety from the University of Toledo named Tyson Anderson. Now,
- 21:05Speaker 1: of all of the players the Bengals selected in his draft,
- 21:07Speaker 1: the six players that they selected, he was the guy
- 21:11Speaker 1: that was rated higher than the spot where they were
- 21:15Speaker 1: able to get him more than anybody else. Pro Football
- 21:17Speaker 1: Focus had him as a third or fourth round pick.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Dane Brugler had him as a fourth round pick. Again,
- 21:24Speaker 1: the Bengals got him in the fifth round, number one
- 21:27Speaker 1: sixty six. This is a guy with good size six
- 21:29Speaker 1: one two o nine who again ran a four three
- 21:33Speaker 1: six forty at the combine four three six forty thirty
- 21:37Speaker 1: seven inch vertical. When you can run and jump like that,
- 21:40Speaker 1: you're a damn good athlete. And he's over six one
- 21:43Speaker 1: and a half approaching two hundred and ten pounds. And
- 21:46Speaker 1: here's another guy that got his degree in business and
- 21:50Speaker 1: he's working toward an MBA in leadership and three time captain.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I'm captain, right, and that falls right into place with it.
- 21:59Speaker 1: So he is his high school valedictorian. This kid is sharp,
- 22:04Speaker 1: carried a GPA three point three eight. So this is
- 22:08Speaker 1: this is the kind of guy Paul Brown's talking about,
- 22:10Speaker 1: not just football savvy in terms of instincts and seeing
- 22:14Speaker 1: things and reading it before it happens, but but overall
- 22:17Speaker 1: raw intelligence. Uh. I remember Paul saying, I like to
- 22:20Speaker 1: shron myself with intelligent people. Um, but he's a smart,
- 22:27Speaker 1: long athletic. Uh. He's you know, he's got all He's
- 22:30Speaker 1: got all the intangrals. And he was a big time
- 22:32Speaker 1: special teamer. He played a ton of special teams at
- 22:35Speaker 1: the collegiate level. And a guy with that kind of experience, uh,
- 22:39Speaker 1: in that phase of it that runs a four, three six,
- 22:42Speaker 1: Darren Simmons is ruling. I mean, there's no question about that.
- 22:45Speaker 1: So and here's a guy that can play safety, He's
- 22:48Speaker 1: played in the slot. He's got position versatility. That that's
- 22:52Speaker 1: the common nominator. Every single player that they drafted has
- 22:56Speaker 1: got position versatility. Now you know they didn't aft a
- 23:00Speaker 1: quarterback or a running back or a wide receiver. I
- 23:04Speaker 1: mean they didn't they didn't draft anybody that's going to
- 23:06Speaker 1: be handling the football. Was kind of an interesting draft
- 23:09Speaker 1: in that regard. And five defensive football players, but they
- 23:15Speaker 1: all have position versatility, which is a must in the
- 23:18Speaker 1: National Football League with the roster sizes in terms of
- 23:21Speaker 1: number of players that you deal with. They won't specifically
- 23:25Speaker 1: say that it had anything to do with guys being
- 23:27Speaker 1: in the final year of their contract, but Eli Apple,
- 23:30Speaker 1: Von Bell and possibly Jesse Bates will be in their
- 23:34Speaker 1: final year with Cincinnati, and they have added three guys
- 23:38Speaker 1: that can potentially replace whichever guys they wind up losing, right,
- 23:42Speaker 1: And you know the thing, the thing that, yeah, that's interesting,
- 23:48Speaker 1: Jesse Bates is the one that's being talked about a
- 23:50Speaker 1: ton with respect to his contract, and the safety position
- 23:54Speaker 1: is the only position that's basically declined, you know, plateau
- 23:58Speaker 1: and starting to drop and turn what they're getting paid. Um.
- 24:02Speaker 1: But von Bell is in the final year of a
- 24:05Speaker 1: contract too, and stands to reason that I'm not sure
- 24:09Speaker 1: you can keep both of them. Which one are you're
- 24:10Speaker 1: going to keep? It might not automatically be Jesse Bates
- 24:13Speaker 1: if they move on from Vaughn Bell, they may be
- 24:15Speaker 1: able to afford Jesse Bates a little bit easier. So
- 24:18Speaker 1: I mean that that room is a good room. In
- 24:22Speaker 1: that room, I mean they're they're playing for their football lives.
- 24:27Speaker 1: If it doesn't work out here, they want to put
- 24:29Speaker 1: together as good as seasons they possibly can to get
- 24:32Speaker 1: that contract somewhere else. And then you get a young
- 24:34Speaker 1: buck who's uh, you know a couple of young bucks
- 24:38Speaker 1: drafted very early in the draft that say hey, you
- 24:42Speaker 1: know what about me? Um. So it's going to be
- 24:46Speaker 1: very very interesting. There's there's different levels of stages of
- 24:50Speaker 1: their career, uh, and it's going to be extremely competitive.
- 24:54Speaker 1: It's going to be very interesting to to monitor the
- 24:56Speaker 1: environment of that of that room. And I think competition
- 25:02Speaker 1: breeds excellence performance And they can all run and they
- 25:06Speaker 1: all have range. I think the safety position is gonna
- 25:10Speaker 1: make a lot of plays for Louianna Rumo. And it
- 25:12Speaker 1: won't just be at the safety position. These guys will
- 25:14Speaker 1: be playing some slot corner form and blitz and form
- 25:18Speaker 1: and doing all kinds of things. I think it's going
- 25:20Speaker 1: to be very interesting to see how this whole thing unfolds.
- 25:23Speaker 1: The sixth and final member of this year's draft class,
- 25:26Speaker 1: selected in the seventh round, number two fifty two overall
- 25:29Speaker 1: was Jeffrey Gunter, an edge rush type guy, although he
- 25:33Speaker 1: played all over the place at Coastal Carolina, six four
- 25:35Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty eight pounds, ran a four seven forty,
- 25:39Speaker 1: did thirty reps on the bench press. So he gets
- 25:42Speaker 1: an excellent relative athletics score from at math bomb on
- 25:47Speaker 1: Twitter and an intriguing good character guy to add to
- 25:52Speaker 1: the mix. And that's the thing I think even up
- 25:55Speaker 1: to the seventh round pick position, versatility and athleticism, I mean,
- 26:01Speaker 1: speed was a factor overall. Athleticism, vertical jump, broad jump,
- 26:05Speaker 1: three cone, all those things. How how do these guys move?
- 26:10Speaker 1: And like lou and Ruma was talking about, you know,
- 26:12Speaker 1: if you run a four to three six, but yet
- 26:14Speaker 1: you can't stop and start, if you run a four
- 26:16Speaker 1: to three six and you can't slam the brakes on
- 26:18Speaker 1: and get in and out of cuts, it's not it
- 26:20Speaker 1: won't help you in football. I mean, you know this
- 26:22Speaker 1: isn't long. Speed's a great thing, but it's not a
- 26:26Speaker 1: track meet. So you have to be able to to
- 26:28Speaker 1: do some other things. And these these guys can all
- 26:31Speaker 1: do that. It's interesting, Hubert. They draft in the seventh
- 26:34Speaker 1: round last year from Kansas State, same type of guy,
- 26:37Speaker 1: and you're gonna you're gonna have back to back last
- 26:40Speaker 1: picks of the draft for the Cincinnati Bengals in back
- 26:42Speaker 1: to back seasons. I should say that, you know, are
- 26:45Speaker 1: going to be competing for you know, maybe a spot
- 26:48Speaker 1: if they're fortunate, or practice squad or whatever the case
- 26:51Speaker 1: may be there, but both of them seem to be
- 26:54Speaker 1: cut from the same cloth, try hard guys, you know,
- 26:57Speaker 1: doggedly determined, going to empty the effort bucket. And they're
- 27:01Speaker 1: going to be in a room with Hendrickson, Hubbard, all
- 27:05Speaker 1: those kind of guys. That's another good room to be
- 27:07Speaker 1: a part of. And um, you know, I thought Lou
- 27:10Speaker 1: made made a great comment. When you have these young
- 27:14Speaker 1: rookie players in a team meeting and you know you've
- 27:18Speaker 1: got your rookie safety sitting between Jesse Bates and Von
- 27:21Speaker 1: Bell and can look to either way and get questions answered,
- 27:26Speaker 1: and you know you've got back to back seventh round
- 27:30Speaker 1: edge guys that haven't played a snap yet or haven't
- 27:32Speaker 1: even practiced yet. Hubert, he didn't even make it to
- 27:35Speaker 1: training camp, he blew back in offseason workouts. So those
- 27:41Speaker 1: guys sitting between Hendrickson and Hubbard, that's that's what you're
- 27:45Speaker 1: talking about in terms of culture and the type of
- 27:48Speaker 1: team you want to have. And because these these veteran
- 27:52Speaker 1: players will offer up very very good advice, you know,
- 27:56Speaker 1: and maybe they'll wait to be asked, but man, the answers,
- 28:00Speaker 1: the young guys are going to be impressed with what
- 28:02Speaker 1: they hear, and not not just football, but nutrition, proper rest,
- 28:09Speaker 1: taking care of your body. I mean, it's these guys
- 28:12Speaker 1: know the tricks of the trade. They've been through the process,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and they can they can offer things that are very,
- 28:17Speaker 1: very valuable to these young players. For sure, because the
- 28:21Speaker 1: draft class is small in numbers six players, there will
- 28:25Speaker 1: be more undrafted free agents that wind up wind up
- 28:28Speaker 1: signing with the Bengals more than usual. They want to
- 28:31Speaker 1: have a certain number of players at training camp obviously
- 28:34Speaker 1: for depth and for reps. So it'll be interesting to
- 28:36Speaker 1: see coming off of Super Bowl who they are able
- 28:39Speaker 1: to lure as a UFA. Yeah, and you got to
- 28:42Speaker 1: think at some point you need numbers just for training camp,
- 28:47Speaker 1: you know. So I think that that's where you're going
- 28:51Speaker 1: to see you know, your wide receivers, your tight ends
- 28:54Speaker 1: that you weren't able to necessarily generate in this draft,
- 28:59Speaker 1: and you did sign a tight end and free agency,
- 29:02Speaker 1: but you know, there's the wide receiver position. They've got
- 29:06Speaker 1: to get some bodies in there. So which and it's
- 29:09Speaker 1: going to be interesting because if you're a college free agent,
- 29:12Speaker 1: oh yeah, I mean, yeah, you're gonna give me a
- 29:14Speaker 1: lot of reps in training camp. But what chance do
- 29:16Speaker 1: I have to make that football team with that group? Well,
- 29:18Speaker 1: they don't, they don't really have any They're still trying
- 29:21Speaker 1: to find that fourth receiver. So I mean, if you
- 29:24Speaker 1: if you go out there and shine, you have a
- 29:27Speaker 1: chance to chance to really live live a dream, fulfill
- 29:30Speaker 1: a dream. There's there's no doubt about it. So I
- 29:33Speaker 1: think that, uh, the fund begins in that regard. And
- 29:37Speaker 1: it is interesting now the way each you know, there's
- 29:40Speaker 1: money designated for each round and the draft, and then
- 29:43Speaker 1: there's money designated for college free agency, and you can
- 29:46Speaker 1: break it up however you want. Sometimes you don't want
- 29:48Speaker 1: to be drafted in the seventh round. You'd rather be
- 29:50Speaker 1: a college free agent. You're looking at a much bigger
- 29:52Speaker 1: signing bonus as a college free agent potentially than you
- 29:55Speaker 1: are as a as a drafted player late in the draft.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Although you hear these guys that are drafted late, they
- 30:04Speaker 1: are so happy, so fulfilled, so excited, you know, a
- 30:08Speaker 1: lifetime dream just to get drafted in the National Football League.
- 30:12Speaker 1: It's like all your friends, Oh, did you get drafted? No? No,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I was a free agent, but I made more money.
- 30:18Speaker 1: We don't care you didn't get drafted, you know. I mean,
- 30:20Speaker 1: it's a there's a little bit of a you know,
- 30:23Speaker 1: pecking order deal that you know, you can go out
- 30:25Speaker 1: and pump your chest up about a little bit. So
- 30:27Speaker 1: it's all very interesting. All right. Another draft is in
- 30:31Speaker 1: the books. We'll be talking about these guys in the
- 30:34Speaker 1: weeks and months to come. Look forward to getting to
- 30:36Speaker 1: know them much better. And again, appreciate all you did
- 30:38Speaker 1: over the weekend. Appreciate you, Dan, and I am very
- 30:42Speaker 1: intrigued and excited to watch this defense run. I think
- 30:48Speaker 1: they're going to be it's going to be a group
- 30:50Speaker 1: that swarms. I really I don't. I'm trying to think
- 30:54Speaker 1: if there's there are other teams in the National Football
- 30:56Speaker 1: League that have really good team speed, but they can't
- 30:59Speaker 1: have a whole lot more team speed than the Cincinnati Bengals,
- 31:03Speaker 1: and Luana Ruma and his staff are gonna put out there.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I mean, it's gonna be fun to watch them fly.
- 31:07Speaker 1: To the football man, it's gonna be very You wonder
- 31:13Speaker 1: how many explosives are they going to give up because
- 31:16Speaker 1: it can't be a huge number. With the recoverability speed,
- 31:18Speaker 1: even if you get beaten, you can you can recover
- 31:21Speaker 1: when you're running sub four or four. That's the crazy
- 31:27Speaker 1: thing is there are more guys doing it, and every
- 31:31Speaker 1: year it's like, can they get bigger, stronger, faster, Yes
- 31:35Speaker 1: they can. I mean the nutrition, uh, you know, the
- 31:41Speaker 1: in terms of training your body and how they know
- 31:44Speaker 1: how to take care of themselves and the league doesn't
- 31:46Speaker 1: beat them up as much as they used to. It's
- 31:49Speaker 1: exciting to see these guys go out and perform. They
- 31:51Speaker 1: are world class athletes. There's no doubt that's going to
- 31:55Speaker 1: do it. For this episode of The Bengals Booth podcast
