Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Today marks day seventy one of the war with Iran,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and yesterday Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Katari Prime Minister, who has been acting as one of
- 0:09Speaker 1: several intermediaries working behind the scenes to try to end
- 0:12Speaker 1: this conflict. That meeting took place a day after the
- 0:15Speaker 1: Prime minister appears to have met with Vice President jad
- 0:18Speaker 1: Vance in Washington, and I say appears because the only
- 0:22Speaker 1: evidence that meeting took place is this picture and social
- 0:25Speaker 1: media posts from the Katari Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There's
- 0:29Speaker 1: been no readoubt from the US side, no social media posts,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and the White House did not respond to ms now
- 0:35Speaker 1: when we tried to confirm if it even happened at all.
- 0:38Speaker 1: All of this comes as President Trump continues to await
- 0:42Speaker 1: Iran's response to his administration's one page Memorandum of Understanding,
- 0:47Speaker 1: a document outlining terms and timelines for new negotiations in
- 0:51Speaker 1: an attempt to end the war. Rubio said Iran would
- 0:54Speaker 1: respond by Friday, and Trump had even given Iran a
- 0:58Speaker 1: Friday deadline to respond. Yesterday, and his only public remarks,
- 1:02Speaker 1: Trump told a French TV station that he quote expects
- 1:06Speaker 1: to hear very soon joining me now is ms NOW
- 1:09Speaker 1: contributor Inzamam Rashid in Dubai and Zie, it's good to
- 1:12Speaker 1: see you. Iranian media is now reporting that Iran's response
- 1:16Speaker 1: to the US proposal to end the war has been
- 1:18Speaker 1: shared with Pakistan.
- 1:19Speaker 2: What are you hearing?
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and we've got that confirmed now here on ms NOW.
- 1:25Speaker 3: My sources inside Tehran's senior foreign diplomatic sources linked with
- 1:31Speaker 3: the negotiations have now confirmed that Iran has formally submitted
- 1:36Speaker 3: their response to that US proposal to Pakistan. There's no
- 1:41Speaker 3: indication yet whether Pakistan has sent that off to the US,
- 1:44Speaker 3: but I imagine that would happen pretty quickly. My source
- 1:48Speaker 3: also added that this is a positive step, but any
- 1:52Speaker 3: ending is still a long way down the road. Mistrust
- 1:55Speaker 3: needs to be seriously reduced and atmospherics need to be
- 1:59Speaker 3: subsidantially improved. And I think he's alluding to both sides there,
- 2:04Speaker 3: not just the US, but Iran as well. I think
- 2:07Speaker 3: the big question Antonia is why has it taken so
- 2:10Speaker 3: long for Iran to respond? I was being told on
- 2:13Speaker 3: Thursday that they would have a response to the pakistanis
- 2:16Speaker 3: that didn't come? As you mentioned, Secretary Marco Rubio had
- 2:20Speaker 3: said that they were expecting a response on Friday. President
- 2:24Speaker 3: Trump also and they were hoping for a serious response
- 2:27Speaker 3: from the Iranians. That didn't come then. All day yesterday
- 2:31Speaker 3: all eyes were on the Iranians. Nothing came from them yesterday,
- 2:34Speaker 3: and now today we have finally seen a response.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Also, what's inside.
- 2:38Speaker 3: That that we can't be clear about, but I think Iran,
- 2:42Speaker 3: if they've taken this much time, then I think they
- 2:45Speaker 3: would have seriously considered some of the points that the
- 2:48Speaker 3: US included in their proposal, so ending the war within
- 2:52Speaker 3: the next thirty days, a gradual lifting of the Iranian
- 2:56Speaker 3: blockade on the straight up Hormus, as well as the
- 2:58Speaker 3: US blockade on the straight of Hormuz.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Iran's nuclear program.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I'll be really interested to see whether they've actually responded
- 3:06Speaker 3: to the specific details around whether they can carry on
- 3:09Speaker 3: in enriching uranium to create a nuclear bomb.
- 3:11Speaker 2: That's been the red line from the US.
- 3:13Speaker 3: It's the whole point the US and Israel got into
- 3:16Speaker 3: this fight in the first place, and of course lifting
- 3:19Speaker 3: of the sanctions inside Iran so they can get their
- 3:22Speaker 3: economy flowing once again. There was one particular point from
- 3:26Speaker 3: the US proposal as well, is that if negotiations couldn't
- 3:30Speaker 3: come to a conclusive ending within the thirty days of
- 3:33Speaker 3: this agreement being approved, then the US and Israel would
- 3:37Speaker 3: start their strikes on Iran once again and continue with
- 3:41Speaker 3: the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. So I'd be
- 3:44Speaker 3: interested to see what Iran has responded to that. I
- 3:47Speaker 3: just want to tell you what Iran's president has tweeted
- 3:50Speaker 3: this morning as well. He said that we will never
- 3:53Speaker 3: bow our heads before the enemy, and if talk of
- 3:57Speaker 3: dialogue or negotiation arises, it does not mean surrender or retreat.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Rather, the goal is to uphold.
- 4:04Speaker 3: The rights of the Iranian nation and to defend national
- 4:07Speaker 3: interests with resolute strength. Remember, Antonio, these are guys who
- 4:12Speaker 3: will not capitulate to US demands their hard line. They've
- 4:16Speaker 3: had years and years of learning how to negotiate, to
- 4:20Speaker 3: not back down to anyone's demands as it may be,
- 4:24Speaker 3: so getting a deal over the line will be very difficult,
- 4:27Speaker 3: But this is a positive step they have responded.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Let's look to the US now to see.
- 4:33Speaker 3: What their response is and whether the two sides could
- 4:36Speaker 3: be meeting anytime soon to get an ending.
- 4:38Speaker 2: To this war.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, in the I mean hard line. Some of the
- 4:42Speaker 1: reportings suggests maybe even harder line than before this war began,
- 4:47Speaker 1: because in many ways it seems the US and Israel's
- 4:49Speaker 1: actions have actually put some of the most hard line
- 4:53Speaker 1: people in the center of power now allowed them to
- 4:57Speaker 1: consolidate control of the country. Thank you as all ways
- 5:00Speaker 1: MS NOW contributor Insimum Rashid you're reporting there from Dubai.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You always do such a good job of making sense
- 5:06Speaker 1: of this
