Transcript
- 0:00Hello, everyone. This is Erica Spicer Mason with
- 0:02Becker's Healthcare. Thank you so much for tuning
- 0:05in to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:08Today, we're going to talk about delivering real
- 0:10AI results and why enterprise data strategy comes
- 0:13first.
- 0:14And joining me for this conversation, we have
- 0:16with us Ajay Kapare,
- 0:18the president and CEO of Elkay.
- 0:21Ajay,
- 0:22welcome to Becker's podcast. Thank you so much
- 0:24for being here today. Thank you, Erica, for
- 0:26having me here.
- 0:28Really happy to have you here. And I
- 0:30thought to get us started, it'd be great
- 0:32if you could share just a little bit
- 0:33about your background and also offer our listeners
- 0:36just a quick snapshot of what Elkay does.
- 0:39What are the types of data challenges that
- 0:41you're helping health systems navigate right now?
- 0:44So, Erica, you know, last two decades, I
- 0:46worked in health care and health care IT,
- 0:49and,
- 0:49you know, I have seen I joined
- 0:53right when we started with the wave of
- 0:55meaningful use.
- 0:57And,
- 0:58from meaningful use, from
- 1:00getting all the revolution done towards health care,
- 1:04electronification
- 1:05of EMS, and
- 1:08every physician in The US
- 1:10trying to actually adapt to that change, to
- 1:12population health, community health, and now we all
- 1:16are in the AI wave.
- 1:18Elkay,
- 1:19to be honest, we play as a central
- 1:21role towards all the things going around us.
- 1:25Elkay as a company, we are in five
- 1:27segment of health care IT.
- 1:30We are an enterprise interop solution provider company,
- 1:33where primarily the three solutions that we offer
- 1:36and the three problems that we solve,
- 1:39we are LK Opera, which is a platform
- 1:42to orchestrate all the interoperability. Then we also
- 1:44take care of live and legacy data platform
- 1:47for a long term digitization
- 1:49strategy with LK OSIS. And then platform to
- 1:52expand the possibilities that things beyond connectivity with
- 1:55LK Orbit,
- 1:56our lab network is a pretty big place
- 1:58out there.
- 2:01And as we look at LK, the next
- 2:03generation where things are changing,
- 2:06we all are looking at what the power
- 2:09of AI and what AI can do. And
- 2:11I feel like we are the foundation for
- 2:13that clean and clear data
- 2:15that drive these strategic initiatives
- 2:17to make AI enabler.
- 2:20This is where we are all actually very
- 2:22excited about.
- 2:24Great to learn more about you, Ajay, and
- 2:26LK as well. It's
- 2:28fantastic that you have this kind of central
- 2:30role as an organization.
- 2:33I think that's an important place to be,
- 2:35especially as we're seeing so much
- 2:38enthusiasm
- 2:39and even hype around AI and health care.
- 2:43And we hear from leaders across the industry
- 2:46that a lot of pilots
- 2:48struggle to scale.
- 2:50So I would love to know from what
- 2:51you're seeing across your own client base, where
- 2:54is AI actually delivering
- 2:56measurable results? And, conversely,
- 2:58where are organizations hitting walls that maybe they
- 3:01didn't anticipate hitting?
- 3:03I think if you look at it,
- 3:04as we talk about fueling the AI innovation
- 3:07with access to quality data,
- 3:10that quality data access is where we play
- 3:12the big role. If you look at it
- 3:14today, 91%
- 3:16of health care leaders,
- 3:17they believe AI or machine learning will be
- 3:20an integral part of their organization's growth.
- 3:23But at the same time, if you actually
- 3:25do a survey with
- 3:2620 different CIOs,
- 3:28chances are you might get actually 20 different
- 3:31answers.
- 3:32Because everyone's strategy is different. Strategy is still
- 3:35a foundation
- 3:36where LK plays or LK actually try to
- 3:39help them
- 3:40in the in the way in the initiatives,
- 3:42what they are trying to achieve is data
- 3:45integrity, which also includes, you
- 3:47know, today if you look at it, there
- 3:49is a lot of data silos. There is
- 3:50a lack of sufficient data. There is a
- 3:53poor data quality. There is inconsistent
- 3:55data formats, inadequate data governance. Where LK can
- 3:59come and really put a foundation is we
- 4:02can do the groundwork for AI and machine
- 4:04learning success. By ensuring that there is a
- 4:06proper data integrity, we are actually
- 4:09ensuring that there is a quality of data
- 4:11which goes in. Otherwise,
- 4:14you are always going to see that garbage
- 4:16in. You are going to see the garbage
- 4:18out. So we are the enablers of the
- 4:19data.
- 4:20That's the big role that we are playing
- 4:22right now with our data and interoperability strategy.
- 4:27Oh, fantastic. Thanks for giving us a kind
- 4:29of on the ground feel of what you're
- 4:31seeing, Ajay.
- 4:32And when you look at the organizations that
- 4:34are seeing real traction
- 4:36with AI versus those that have not yet,
- 4:40What would you say is the distinguishing factor,
- 4:42and how much of that comes down to
- 4:44the data foundation that they had in place
- 4:46before they even started to leverage an AI
- 4:49tool?
- 4:50I think I think there is always going
- 4:52to be, like, you know, there is always
- 4:53going to be that excitement
- 4:56looking at the use cases and looking at
- 4:58what you can actually achieve.
- 5:00A lot of times with that excitement, actually,
- 5:03a lot of dollars gets actually plugged in,
- 5:05and then you see at the end of
- 5:07the day that there is no ROI.
- 5:09In today's time,
- 5:11when things are difficult, I mean, you know,
- 5:12you open,
- 5:14you know, Becker's the daily Becker's report, and
- 5:16you will see that, you know, things are
- 5:18not that easy. And in these times, you
- 5:21really have to start fixing,
- 5:24your data strategy with data foundation.
- 5:28The real organization who are seeing real traction,
- 5:31it it's not just that, you know, here
- 5:33is a use case or here are the
- 5:34tools I'm going to use it.
- 5:36And it's not even the budget, it's the
- 5:38discipline. How do you put together
- 5:40you know, you got to actually make sure
- 5:42that there are you are unifying the system,
- 5:45clean up your interfaces, and and you get
- 5:47serious about governance.
- 5:49The one struggling
- 5:51part that everyone is looking at it is
- 5:53how the top of the layer will perform
- 5:56in this complex environment if the bottom of
- 5:59the data which is
- 6:00inserted is not correct.
- 6:02So that foundation piece, the quality and connectivity
- 6:05of your data, one has to look at
- 6:08it. And I personally feel anyone who works
- 6:11super hard on that foundation is going to
- 6:14absolutely come,
- 6:16successful at the end of the day. The
- 6:18integration, the data
- 6:19aggregation, the quality and insight, and then the
- 6:22reporting of that, it all plays,
- 6:25you know, cohesively
- 6:27with each other. And that is the part
- 6:29I feel like we can really help a
- 6:31lot.
- 6:32Yeah. Ajay, I I know in a lot
- 6:34of these AI conversations that I've heard or
- 6:36participated in myself, the data foundation is something
- 6:39that's stressed
- 6:41pretty,
- 6:42universally
- 6:42among experts such as yourself. So I appreciate
- 6:45you sharing that.
- 6:46And I'd love if you could just walk
- 6:48us through what an enterprise data management strategy
- 6:52actually looks like in practice.
- 6:54Maybe there's a lot of moving pieces. So
- 6:56if we could just give our listeners kind
- 6:58of a more granular sense of what that
- 7:00data management strategy looks like. And for a
- 7:02CIO who's heard that term
- 7:04frequently, you know, in vendor pitches,
- 7:06what does it mean to really get it
- 7:08right?
- 7:09Yeah. And, you know, we we as a
- 7:11company, we are moving towards from being enterprise,
- 7:14you know, in broad solution part of company,
- 7:16and it's a journey for us.
- 7:18We started with being a data plumbers. From
- 7:21being a data plumbers, we started getting into
- 7:23becoming a enterprise interrupt solution for the company.
- 7:26And from there, as we look at it,
- 7:29we are slowly and slowly becoming an enterprise
- 7:31data management
- 7:32as a company.
- 7:34Or we we call ourselves very proudly, we
- 7:36are your enterprise
- 7:37health care data partner. But enterprise
- 7:41data management, it's a platform. It's a foundation
- 7:44for a data driven health care strategic initiatives,
- 7:47and it's the innovation across the care of
- 7:50continuum that we're trying to provide.
- 7:52Now what comes in enterprise data management platform?
- 7:54It's your interface. It's your interoperate. It's the
- 7:57translation of data. It's the aggregation of the
- 7:59data, and it's the access of the data.
- 8:01And as you as you look into it,
- 8:03you know, there are multiple pieces to it
- 8:05with our enterprise data management we are bringing
- 8:08in. You know, we are trying to build
- 8:10a network strategy, maintain a legacy data, experience
- 8:13that speed to value that everyone is looking
- 8:15at it today.
- 8:17You want to accelerate your innovation, you want
- 8:19to put your AI
- 8:21elements on top of it, that innovation we're
- 8:23trying to accelerate.
- 8:24If you look at the complete data visualization,
- 8:27that is achieved.
- 8:28In in small words, I can actually just
- 8:31say that, you know, we are trying to
- 8:33make sure the competitive advantage,
- 8:36the models that you are putting, it all
- 8:38starts with the quality and connectivity of your
- 8:40data. And we are actually trying to make
- 8:42sure we can do this.
- 8:45We there are there are a lot of,
- 8:47you know, there are a lot of sales,
- 8:49lot of noise around and enterprise data management
- 8:51or data strategy. It's easy to say than
- 8:54to actually put it in place.
- 8:56But we have proved ourselves today,
- 8:59you know, when you look at our lab
- 9:01network, two third of this country, you know,
- 9:03they access their lab order and result through
- 9:05LK. If you look at our partnership with
- 9:07Commonwealth,
- 9:08there are more than 200,000,000 patient transaction which
- 9:11happens through us. So we are we are
- 9:14we are making sure that, you know,
- 9:17the AI play is not just a pilot
- 9:19mode, but we are we are trying to
- 9:21build build a future of five to ten
- 9:23years strategy
- 9:25across the
- 9:26across the segment of, health care.
- 9:30Mhmm. I really appreciate you kind of translating
- 9:34enterprise data management strategy for us, Ajay.
- 9:37I feel like we have a much better
- 9:39picture
- 9:40of what that actually looks like. And,
- 9:42you know, just to take this one step
- 9:44further,
- 9:45I guess, I'm here to close this out.
- 9:47If you're sitting across the table from a
- 9:49health system later today, especially someone who's in
- 9:52informatics or technology,
- 9:54what is the one infrastructure investment that you
- 9:56would tell them to prioritize
- 9:57in the next year to really set themselves
- 9:59up for meaningful
- 10:01improvements with AI?
- 10:03I think, you know, it's not even fair
- 10:05to say. If there was one one advice
- 10:07I can give and that can solve all
- 10:09their problems, it's easy. Right?
- 10:11But but the fact is
- 10:14we are we are in this time frame
- 10:16right now
- 10:17where innovation and the changes of innovation with
- 10:19AI are changing every day.
- 10:22Lot of excitement around that. At the same
- 10:24time, you have so much budget constraints.
- 10:27You know, you are trying to do more
- 10:29things in less money today.
- 10:32And,
- 10:33these budget constraints, they're real.
- 10:36And everyone is looking at it, what can
- 10:38I get the best out of a product
- 10:40with a great ROI?
- 10:42And my my simple simplification with everyone is
- 10:44that, you know,
- 10:46you got to actually look at your foundation.
- 10:49You have to look at your interoperability. You
- 10:51have to look at the number of systems
- 10:53that you're working and how you can actually
- 10:56bring all that data together with the one
- 10:58single strategy.
- 11:00Enterprise data management definitely plays a big role
- 11:02here.
- 11:04AI is going to keep evolving. New models
- 11:06are going to keep coming. New vendors are
- 11:08going to keep coming. New partners are going
- 11:10to keep coming, and you will end up
- 11:12doing more and more. But your foundation,
- 11:15and especially your data foundation, data governance
- 11:19has to be on the top. That is
- 11:22definitely going to be one thing that that
- 11:24is going to differentiate.
- 11:26The organization
- 11:27that win, they're not going to be one
- 11:29that were adopting
- 11:31any new technology first, but they are the
- 11:33one who are going to build the infrastructure
- 11:35to sustain it for the longitude.
- 11:38Mhmm. Remember, you also have to look at
- 11:40the
- 11:41compliance piece. You have to look at the
- 11:43security piece. You have to look at the
- 11:45changes happening in regulations.
- 11:47And all those things can happen only with
- 11:49the foundation of the data layer that you're
- 11:52putting together.
- 11:55Ajay, it's been so insightful hearing what a
- 11:58sound data foundation can enable in terms of
- 12:02innovating in the first place or just responding
- 12:04to the rapid changes that you're speaking to
- 12:06that are happening right now and will only
- 12:08continue
- 12:09as AI evolves. So I just wanna thank
- 12:11you for for sharing your time and your
- 12:13your thought leadership with our listeners today. It's
- 12:15been great learning from you. Well, thank you
- 12:17for the opportunity. And, you know, I always
- 12:20love Becker's. I come to Becker's, and I'm
- 12:22looking forward to attending in person. And I
- 12:24hope,
- 12:26more and more people can actually get advantage
- 12:28of the conference.
- 12:30Oh, Ajay, thank you so much, and we're
- 12:32excited to see you at our events this
- 12:34spring.
- 12:35And listeners, we'd like to thank you for
- 12:36joining us, and, of course, would also like
- 12:38to thank our sponsor for today's podcast, Elkay.
