- 0:26SPEAKER_00: At work, building great relationships is not just being nice.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: It is not saying yes to everything.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I share five ways to quickly build great relationships at work.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: These principles and actions also keep your relationships strong year after year.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Firstly, make working with you enjoyable.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Second, create opportunities to meet face to face.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Third, seek to proactively help co-workers who reciprocate.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Fourth, deliver what you say you will to build trust and reliance.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And fifth, build personal as well as professional relationships.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Very few people can do their jobs in isolation.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: We all need information and work and output from others to enable us to do our jobs.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Others rely on us to do their jobs well too.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Great relationships and working cultures reduce the friction, delays and issues passing the work needed between individuals, teams and functions.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Less friction, delays and issues means better performance at all levels.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: The first way to quickly build great relationships at work is to make working with you enjoyable.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Who enjoys working with grumpy, difficult, negative, unhelpful colleagues?
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Not many.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: The easier and more enjoyable you are to work with, the more you'll find out, the more you'll be invited to join interesting projects, and the more others will want to work with you in their team.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: This is fundamental human nature.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Here are six traits we should all work on improving.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Firstly, people like those who are interested in them, their interests, and who share similar values and outlooks to them.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Secondly, most people like positive people who uplift them.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Third, colleagues like those with energy and who energise them.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Fourth, co-workers like people that are helpful, that help them do their jobs better, with less stress, anxiety and uncertainty, etc.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Fifth, most people prefer colleagues who are open and honest, who tell it how it is, and who diplomatically and considerately communicate where you stand with them.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Sixth, everyone likes co-workers and bosses that are authentic.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: These people show true parts of themselves and their interests so you get to know the real person rather than dealing with various masks or fake personas.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Working on communicating and showing the best, most positive parts of you to co-workers and colleagues.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Develop a positive can-do attitude.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Do your best to help those around you, be friendly and positive, celebrate the successes of others, don't gossip or put others down, don't criticize.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Above all, be yourself, be authentic.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Take all these actions and you'll have colleagues delighted to be working with you.

- 3:42SPEAKER_00: The second way to quickly build relationships is to create opportunities to meet face to face.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Humans are social beings.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: We need contact with others to interact and communicate, to be happy and to work as a team.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Around 90% of our communication is from our facial expressions, tone of voice and body language.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Around 10% of communication comes from the actual words used.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Think how many different interpretations of the same email are possible.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: When meeting face to face, you employ all of your communication skills, verbal and non-verbal.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: We get a better sense of the other person when meeting face to face.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: We build trust quicker, we build relationships quicker.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: For all these reasons, make the time to pop round to colleagues' desks and to speak to them rather than phoning.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Pick up the phone or book in a video call rather than emailing or messaging.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: The more time you spend face to face with colleagues or bosses, the quicker you'll be able to build relationships with them and the better those relationships are likely to be.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Create opportunities to spend time building relationships face to face.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: The third way to quickly build relationships at work is to seek to proactively help co-workers who reciprocate.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: A very powerful social law is reciprocity, the feeling of obligation to help another when they have already helped you.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Look at the influential people at your work.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Nearly all of them will use reciprocity a lot.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: They go out of their way to help other people, knowing that at some point they will need help in return.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Having already helped the other person, they are much more likely to get the help they need and when they need it.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Timely help enables you to deliver a lot more in the same time frame compared to a person that does not proactively help and has to wait for the information, the help, or the work that they need to do their job.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: How do you feel when a person genuinely helps you without asking for anything in return?
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: I generally feel very grateful and positive towards these people.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: I am more likely to be influenced by and trust the people who help me.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: There'll be people who take advantage of you helping them, who don't help you in return.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: In short, be very cautious about helping these people again.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Why put your time and energy into helping a person who is unlikely to help you in return when so many other people will return the favour?
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Seek to proactively help co-workers who reciprocate.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: The fourth way to quickly build great relationships is to deliver what you say you will.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Being friendly, helpful, positive, team focused, etc.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: are all really important and they will build a relationship at work to a point.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Within a business, everyone's work impacts on colleagues and ultimately the wider team.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: If you don't deliver, you'll let others down.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Let others down too often and you start damaging your relationship with them.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: They can't rely on you.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Being good or at least average at your job will enable you to be a potentially reliable colleague and team player in terms of your capability and the quality of the work you deliver.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: To consistently deliver what you say you will, you also need to be good at setting and managing expectations.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Learn how to say no diplomatically.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Learn how to negotiate what you'll deliver by when with coworkers.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Put in the time to reset expectations when things change.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: Always make sure you are delivering against the expectations that you have set.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: People love working with a nice person who delivers what they commit to delivering.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: You trust the person who delivers again and again.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: You can rely on them.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: This means you're a lot more confident in doing your job well as a result.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Consistently delivering to expectations set is vital to quickly build great relationships at work.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Those that deliver consistently enjoy, firstly, a higher standing in the team.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Secondly, their opinions carry more weight.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Thirdly, they get given better projects and activities.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Fourth, they have more influence within the business.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: And fifth, colleagues are keen to work with them.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: In short, the people that deliver consistently and employ the other actions that we've talked about build strong professional relationships that help them be significantly more effective at work.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Their stronger relationships become a key factor in their outperformance.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Make sure you deliver what you say you're going to.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: The fifth way to quickly build great relationships at work is to build personal as well as professional relationships.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: If you keep your relationships entirely focused on the professional side, i.e.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: discussing what is happening at work, your relationships will not be as strong, not as helpful to you, nor as enjoyable for either party.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Nearly everyone enjoys talking about themselves, their hobbies, their interests, their beliefs and opinions.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Work is only a part of who we are and our interests.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: If you only keep your relationship to work matters, you ignore all the other areas a person really values.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Find out what their hobbies are, what their interests are and what is important in their life.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Do they play a support?
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Do they coach a youth team or do charity work?
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Do they have favourite sports teams they follow?
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Are they currently learning a new language or planning an exotic holiday?
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Do they have young children or a new pet?
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: What gets them excited?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Think of questions to ask that will get them talking about one of their favourite subjects.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: I personally find it very useful to keep notes about each person's key interests.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: When you have to remember the interests of more than say 20-30 people, your notes become very useful.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Don't forget to tell them about yourself too.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: A great relationship is a two-way street.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: To build the relationships in the first place, make sure your focus is on them more than you.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: In summary, building good relationships is very important to enable you to be able to do a great job.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: The stronger your relationships at work, the easier you'll find it to get information, to get help and to get resources and to get all these when you need them.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: This creates a huge boost to your ability to deliver output and results in a given time frame.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: The more you deliver, the better job you are typically perceived to be doing.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Invest time and effort in building professional and personal relationships with colleagues and bosses.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: We have been through five ways to quickly build great relationships at work, which are firstly make working with you enjoyable.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Second, create opportunities to meet face to face.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Third, seek to proactively help co-workers who reciprocate.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Fourth, deliver what you say you will to build trust and reliance.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: And fifth, build personal as well as professional relationships.
