Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about
- 0:44Speaker 1: a contract on Mick Jagger's life, the big award show
- 0:47Speaker 1: that just happened, yemas not the Oscars, Lynyrd Skinner, Peter
- 0:51Speaker 1: Tosh and of course your voicemails, text dms and more
- 0:55Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of rosie. All right, Discos,
- 0:59Speaker 1: let's get into it. Only second full week of March
- 1:15Speaker 1: and we are back. Beware the IDEs of March A
- 1:18Speaker 1: two boute sure, why not? I'm back here in Disgraceland
- 1:21Speaker 1: with another after Party episode, back here in my Boston
- 1:24Speaker 1: area studio, back from Las Vegas, back from Maine, back
- 1:27Speaker 1: from an action packed week I was out in Las Vegas,
- 1:30Speaker 1: the city of sin that'll swallow you in picking up
- 1:33Speaker 1: an award for Disgraceland, an award I was honored to receive.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I've talked about why before when we were nominated. The
- 1:40Speaker 1: award was for Best Original Score in Music Supervision, nominated
- 1:45Speaker 1: by an awarded by the prestigious Podcast Academy. The award
- 1:50Speaker 1: is called an AMBI, and like I said, I was
- 1:52Speaker 1: stoked to be nominated alongside my brothers, Ryan Spraker, Matt Bowden,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and Bryce Kansas. Or bring this trophy home for the
- 1:59Speaker 1: double Elvis trophy case, which is filling out quite nicely,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I might add. And the reason I gave a shit
- 2:04Speaker 1: about this award was because of the category. Like I said,
- 2:07Speaker 1: I've mentioned this before and it was part of my
- 2:09Speaker 1: acceptance speech out in Vegas. But the reality is that
- 2:12Speaker 1: a lot of people that I spoke with before launching
- 2:14Speaker 1: Disgraceland warned me off of doing so because the nature
- 2:18Speaker 1: of the show and the challenges it would present. It's
- 2:21Speaker 1: a music show, as you know, no dea Licensing music
- 2:24Speaker 1: is very difficult to do, never mind in a new
- 2:27Speaker 1: medium like podcasting, it won't work because of this blah
- 2:31Speaker 1: blah blah blah blah. That's what they said. We didn't
- 2:34Speaker 1: let that stop us. Obviously. I am, like I've said
- 2:36Speaker 1: in the past, from the hardcore scene, and we were
- 2:38Speaker 1: taught to use our limitations as strengths. Can't get anyone
- 2:42Speaker 1: to book your band, that's okay, book the VFW haul
- 2:44Speaker 1: down the street, put the show on yourself. Can't get
- 2:46Speaker 1: anyone to put out your record, that's fine too. Find
- 2:48Speaker 1: a way to record, Go press up some copies on
- 2:50Speaker 1: cassette and voila, now you get your own record label.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Can't afford to license the music from the artists you're
- 2:54Speaker 1: discussing in your podcast, Make your own music and build
- 2:57Speaker 1: it into the show's DNA. And that's essentially what we
- 3:00Speaker 1: did because that was the number one solution I had
- 3:03Speaker 1: in the spring of twenty eighteen when Disgraceland was born,
- 3:06Speaker 1: and that was the only way the show was going
- 3:08Speaker 1: to work. And thank god it did. And boy howdy
- 3:11Speaker 1: am I grateful. I was the only one up there
- 3:14Speaker 1: at that podium and with a tight thirty seconds to
- 3:16Speaker 1: accept the award. It's important to point out that there
- 3:20Speaker 1: are many people who work on the show, despite the
- 3:22Speaker 1: four of us who were nominated. Double Elvis is a team,
- 3:25Speaker 1: a team that lives and dies with the support of
- 3:27Speaker 1: you guys, the listeners. So I just want to say
- 3:30Speaker 1: thank you to all of you and to everybody at
- 3:32Speaker 1: Double Elvis, as this award is as much yours as
- 3:35Speaker 1: it is mine. Cool thing about the hotel side note
- 3:40Speaker 1: that the Ambies were held in. It's the same hotel
- 3:43Speaker 1: in Vegas that Elvis did is legendary Las Vegas residency
- 3:46Speaker 1: in and after I won the award, they kind of
- 3:48Speaker 1: whiskey downstairs to do interviews and get your picture taken,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and then they very quickly hustle you back up into
- 3:53Speaker 1: your seat so your seat isn't empty for too long
- 3:55Speaker 1: for the simulcast. And in that process, the dude who
- 3:58Speaker 1: was bringing me around was like, hey, man, you'll appreciate this.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Check this out. And he took me into this little
- 4:04Speaker 1: hidden room in the bowels of this theater, and it
- 4:06Speaker 1: was Elvis's actual dressing room. They still use it as
- 4:10Speaker 1: a green room of sorts. Barry Manilowe is about to
- 4:13Speaker 1: start a residency there in a couple of days, if
- 4:15Speaker 1: he hasn't already. Anyways, this dude brought me back into
- 4:18Speaker 1: Elvis's dressing room, and behind Elvis's dressing room connected there's
- 4:23Speaker 1: this door and it connects into this super tiny room
- 4:26Speaker 1: and back there all there was was like a mirror,
- 4:28Speaker 1: a desk, and a bed. This is the bed where
- 4:32Speaker 1: Elvis used to take his naps, so damn awesome. The
- 4:35Speaker 1: spirit of Elvis was definitely in the building for dis
- 4:38Speaker 1: Graceland last week at the amb's Thanks to everyone at
- 4:41Speaker 1: the Podcast Academy who voted. Really appreciated the support from
- 4:45Speaker 1: the greater podcast just industry or whatever. Just my friends
- 4:49Speaker 1: and colleagues who were milling about the casino. It was
- 4:52Speaker 1: awesome to just run into everybody that I knew, run
- 4:55Speaker 1: into new people, just be walking around and people coming
- 4:58Speaker 1: up to me, Hey, you're in this Graceland. Oh blah
- 5:00Speaker 1: blah blah. That's up. This is awesome. Haven't had a
- 5:03Speaker 1: lot of that in the last couple months, years, etc.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So it was a very cool experience. I was happy
- 5:09Speaker 1: to get back to New England. I flew from Vegas,
- 5:12Speaker 1: food back home, crashed for a couple hours, grabbed my
- 5:14Speaker 1: family and headed north to Maine for the weekend, which
- 5:17Speaker 1: was awesome. I love that state. Got some good, much needed, replenishing,
- 5:20Speaker 1: soul filling time with my family and a cool thing happened.
- 5:24Speaker 1: We're wandering through a random food market picking up sacks
- 5:27Speaker 1: to bring back to the hotel, and I was cruising
- 5:29Speaker 1: for some non alcoholic beer as I'm off the sauce
- 5:31Speaker 1: for lent, and I randomly came across the disgraceland beer
- 5:35Speaker 1: called rock Rolla in the cooler of this random market
- 5:39Speaker 1: in Ogunquin and Ornol'd Brewing, who we collaborated with on
- 5:44Speaker 1: the beers from Maine, So it shouldn't have been a
- 5:46Speaker 1: surprise to me to come across Rock Rolla. But then again,
- 5:49Speaker 1: it totally was. My boys saw it, they knew it immediately.
- 5:51Speaker 1: They freaked out. One of the customers was like, what
- 5:54Speaker 1: the hell's going on? And my wife, of course, is
- 5:57Speaker 1: all bragging at the top of her lungs. So we
- 5:59Speaker 1: told her about the beer. She bought a four pack.
- 6:01Speaker 1: That was cool. You can buy your own four pack
- 6:03Speaker 1: of Rock Rolla in New England. It's a gluten reduce
- 6:06Speaker 1: basically gluten free beer. You can get this wherever awesome
- 6:09Speaker 1: beer is sold. I'll have more info on this with
- 6:12Speaker 1: specific stores up on our social shortly stores where you
- 6:16Speaker 1: can buy Rock Corolla. All right, enough, I mean mine
- 6:18Speaker 1: back with some of you. You you after the break.
- 6:41Speaker 1: So some of you might remember when I staged Disgraceland,
- 6:44Speaker 1: did some live shows here in Boston, Cambridge actually, and
- 6:48Speaker 1: then out in Denver and in San Francisco, and the
- 6:51Speaker 1: story I told live was the story of the Rolling
- 6:53Speaker 1: Stones at Altamont, which I eventually reproduced into a full
- 6:56Speaker 1: Disgraceland episode. One anecdote from that story that I touched
- 7:00Speaker 1: on in the live episode or the live staging and
- 7:04Speaker 1: on stage, and then in the other episode, Like I mentioned,
- 7:06Speaker 1: one of the anecdotes was how after the melee of
- 7:09Speaker 1: the disastrous Rolling Stones concert where the Hell's Angels stabbed
- 7:13Speaker 1: and killed Meredith Hunter. After that, Mick Jagger was staying
- 7:17Speaker 1: in New York City out on Long Island at Andy
- 7:18Speaker 1: Warhol's place, and it's some enterprising New York chapter Hell's Angels
- 7:22Speaker 1: decided they were going to kill Mick Jagger as payback
- 7:25Speaker 1: for Altamont. There was a contract on his head. And
- 7:27Speaker 1: this story again anecdotal to the larger Altamont story that
- 7:31Speaker 1: I told on stage in the in the podcast, and
- 7:34Speaker 1: I've always wanted to dig in deeper to this anecdote,
- 7:37Speaker 1: so that's exactly what I did last week over on
- 7:40Speaker 1: the Disgraceland YouTube channel. We go deep into the contract
- 7:43Speaker 1: that the Angels put on Mick Jagger's head and the
- 7:44Speaker 1: attempt on his life by the Motorcycle Club, and I
- 7:47Speaker 1: encourage you all to go watch it. That's at YouTube
- 7:49Speaker 1: dot com, slash at disgrace lamppod watch the video, subscribe
- 7:52Speaker 1: to our channel, turn on all notifications so you never
- 7:55Speaker 1: miss any of our daily shorts or our weekly deep dives.
- 7:59Speaker 1: All right, that's YouTube. How wout we get to you?
- 8:02Speaker 1: Just you no tube? All right? How about some of
- 8:04Speaker 1: your voicemails in your texts? You can call me. You
- 8:07Speaker 1: guys know this, you know it. It's six one seven
- 8:09Speaker 1: nine zero six six six three eight. You can leave
- 8:11Speaker 1: me a voicemail. You can text me at that number
- 8:14Speaker 1: as well, six one seven nine zero six six six
- 8:17Speaker 1: three eight, And I'll respond to some of you right
- 8:20Speaker 1: here in the after party. Let's hear what Sherry from
- 8:23Speaker 1: the two one five has to say.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Nike, I love all your stuff.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Shary here and Billy and.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Listen, don't Bunny beat me because I'm on the Spotify side.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So everything you're releasing on the Spotify side, I am
- 8:38Speaker 2: gobbling this shit up because your shit is good. I've
- 8:42Speaker 2: turned four to five people already onto your shit is
- 8:45Speaker 2: so good. It's great bad Lands the Graceland loving both
- 8:49Speaker 2: of them. Got a question though, if you've done it already,
- 8:53Speaker 2: then I'll hear it on the next you know, when
- 8:56Speaker 2: you have the next raining. But it's not can we
- 9:00Speaker 2: have Whitney Houston? Bobby Brown? And is it too soon
- 9:05Speaker 2: be for let's to go after like David Karendene and
- 9:14Speaker 2: Robin Williams. I'm saying it with hesitation because Robin William's
- 9:18Speaker 2: was my heart. But anyway, love you, Jake, Thank.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You Sherry and Philly, I love you back listen. I'm
- 9:28Speaker 1: good with the Spotify listeners. Never gonna hate appreciate you guys,
- 9:31Speaker 1: no matter what platform you're listening on. As for Whitney,
- 9:34Speaker 1: there's a Disgraceland episode on Whitney Houston. It's part of
- 9:37Speaker 1: season four, which means it's a previously exclusive episode and
- 9:41Speaker 1: that this one in particular is going to be re
- 9:44Speaker 1: released into your feed, Sherry on March twenty fourth. That's
- 9:48Speaker 1: coming up. You get that to look forward to. As
- 9:51Speaker 1: you guys know, we are releasing previously exclusive content every
- 9:56Speaker 1: day this month in March we're doing our best to
- 9:58Speaker 1: get the entire ar. I've back out into your feed
- 10:01Speaker 1: for your listening pleasure. And Sherry. Also, Cherry, you brought
- 10:05Speaker 1: up the bad Land series. You're talking about Robin Williams.
- 10:07Speaker 1: There's a Robin Williams episode. It's out there. It's already
- 10:09Speaker 1: out there. Sit your feet on Spotify, it's everywhere. Go listen,
- 10:13Speaker 1: it's there. Get in there, Sherry, Come on, all right,
- 10:16Speaker 1: let's check out this voicemail from the two to two four.
- 10:20Speaker 3: I really dig your show. I just listened to the
- 10:23Speaker 3: one about the club kids. I have one thing to say.
- 10:26Speaker 3: There's no such thing as assless chaps. If they had
- 10:30Speaker 3: an ass in them, they beat pants.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Hah Okay, I stayed corrected. Maybe I think I don't know.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I said assless chaps, not assless pants, So I don't
- 10:40Speaker 1: know what I'm missing here, dude. This guy's referring to
- 10:43Speaker 1: our episode though from season one on Michael aleg which
- 10:46Speaker 1: I highly recommend that you guys go listen to if
- 10:48Speaker 1: you've not already. It's an easy one to pass over
- 10:51Speaker 1: because you see his name and you're like, who the
- 10:53Speaker 1: hell is this guy? He's not a musician, but he
- 10:56Speaker 1: was a famous club promoter tangentially patched to the music
- 11:01Speaker 1: scene in New York in the nineties. In this story
- 11:04Speaker 1: on Michael Alec and the club Kids is one of
- 11:07Speaker 1: the wilder stories we've ever done, and that's saying something,
- 11:11Speaker 1: as you know, so I highly recommend you check out
- 11:14Speaker 1: that episode. Guys six one seven nine zero six six
- 11:18Speaker 1: six three eight. You can call and yell at me
- 11:21Speaker 1: about asslest Chaps or whatever you want to yell at
- 11:23Speaker 1: me about. You can also text me, like the three
- 11:27Speaker 1: oh five. All right, so from the three oh five.
- 11:29Speaker 1: This is a long message here. I'm gonna read part
- 11:31Speaker 1: of it because it's it's very connected to the conversation
- 11:34Speaker 1: we've been having here in the after party. The three
- 11:36Speaker 1: oh five says, Now, I wouldn't recommend this, but when
- 11:38Speaker 1: I was going through a really low point in my
- 11:41Speaker 1: mid twenties, I spent a few months listening to predominantly
- 11:44Speaker 1: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Elliott Smith and Tom Waits. Yikes.
- 11:49Speaker 1: That yikes is my part, because that's some dark shit there.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I had a bunch of their CDs on Constant Rotation.
- 11:55Speaker 1: That's where Nick Cave comes in, and in hindsight, that
- 11:57Speaker 1: was a bit too much wallowing in the sadness, but
- 12:00Speaker 1: damn the music was still amazing. Yeah, that music is amazing,
- 12:03Speaker 1: but that's a lot of darkness, man, a lot of sadness,
- 12:05Speaker 1: like you're saying. And this is because getting this text
- 12:08Speaker 1: from the three oh five because in our last episode,
- 12:13Speaker 1: someone had asked me what I like to listen to
- 12:15Speaker 1: when I'm sad and to cheer me up, and I answered,
- 12:17Speaker 1: I don't really listen to music to cheer me up,
- 12:20Speaker 1: not anymore. I don't know if I really ever did.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I do other things, but I'm not going to go
- 12:24Speaker 1: backwards and repeat what I said last week. So but
- 12:26Speaker 1: that's why I got this text. We also talked in
- 12:28Speaker 1: the last episode about when I'm reading, and I mentioned
- 12:31Speaker 1: Flannery O'Connor, and the three oh five goes oh, and
- 12:33Speaker 1: Flannery O'Connor isn't my favorite writer, but I do think
- 12:36Speaker 1: Good Country People is one of the best short stories
- 12:38Speaker 1: ever written. I don't remember where she originally published it,
- 12:42Speaker 1: but it's been widely anthologized, and for good reason, Thank
- 12:45Speaker 1: you three oh five. I have not read that short
- 12:48Speaker 1: story Good Country People, by Flannerio O'Connor, but I'm going
- 12:51Speaker 1: to go check it out. I'm pretty sure I have
- 12:52Speaker 1: it in an anthology in my library. And then the
- 12:56Speaker 1: three oh five sent this awesome picture of Billie Holliday
- 12:58Speaker 1: with her dog Missed, which you know, if you have
- 13:02Speaker 1: not heard the Billie Holiday episode of Disgraceland, mister her
- 13:07Speaker 1: dog features prominently in it. It's a drug dealing dog.
- 13:10Speaker 1: You're like, what, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 13:12Speaker 1: Just trust me, go listen to the Billie Holiday episode.
- 13:14Speaker 1: All right, let's do some more texts from the three
- 13:17Speaker 1: one four mac Miller episode. I think the ending of
- 13:20Speaker 1: that episode was one of the best endings of a
- 13:22Speaker 1: podcast episode I have ever heard. Thank you well, thank
- 13:25Speaker 1: you three one four. Go check out that mac Miller
- 13:27Speaker 1: episode if you have not heard it. From the two
- 13:30Speaker 1: o two, my wife says, this looks like fingers again,
- 13:34Speaker 1: not a food stylist. I don't know what the fuck
- 13:36Speaker 1: I'm looking at here, man, it's a picture of geez dude.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Oh wait, there's another text again, Jake. Amazing episode on
- 13:44Speaker 1: Ike and Teena Turner. I know you like to know
- 13:46Speaker 1: how we listen this sixty two year old retired I'm
- 13:49Speaker 1: not going to say what she calls herself, but lesbian
- 13:53Speaker 1: is the polite word. Listens while she's making Bangers and
- 13:56Speaker 1: mash total whim for Late Friday Night Dinner. Loved the
- 14:00Speaker 1: episode nut Bush City Limits is one of my favorite songs.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Had no idea of the origin. I am a constant
- 14:04Speaker 1: podcast listener. You are the best. Thank you. From the
- 14:07Speaker 1: two to two and there's some bangers in mash and
- 14:10Speaker 1: a photo there? All right, digging it? Send me the
- 14:12Speaker 1: food picks. I'm here for the food porn, all right?
- 14:15Speaker 1: What else we got here? What up?
- 14:17Speaker 3: Jake?
- 14:18Speaker 1: From the nine to seven one. I'm laying here in
- 14:20Speaker 1: bed next to my sleeping, sick ten month old passing
- 14:22Speaker 1: the time with Kurt and Courtney Part one. I'm sorry
- 14:25Speaker 1: you're ten month old. It's sick. That sucks, and that's stressful. Shit. Man,
- 14:29Speaker 1: I've been there. Texter goes on to say thanks for
- 14:32Speaker 1: all the amazing content. Brother. I do have a suggestion, though,
- 14:35Speaker 1: Have you ever thought of doing some more early American
- 14:37Speaker 1: Delta Blues players like Sunhouse? I have and I will.
- 14:42Speaker 1: We did the Robert Johnson episode that's currently in the archives.
- 14:47Speaker 1: It has not yet been re released live, but it
- 14:49Speaker 1: will soon. And Sounhouse is a prominent player in that episode.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And we've got a Skip James episode that I did
- 14:58Speaker 1: the Newport Folk Fest last summer. We are doing the
- 15:03Speaker 1: fully recorded version of that and that's coming out like
- 15:07Speaker 1: a month or so. That's a new one, all right,
- 15:10Speaker 1: what else we get? Oh? Look at this? How's this
- 15:12Speaker 1: for timing? The seven two four sends in a text
- 15:15Speaker 1: and it's a photo of Lee Field's album Sentimental Fool,
- 15:19Speaker 1: the aforementioned Robert Johnson episode that I just talked about
- 15:24Speaker 1: in Sunhouse. Lee Fields the great soul singer, modern R
- 15:30Speaker 1: and B soul singer. He voices Son. He voiced Sunhouse
- 15:34Speaker 1: for me. We hit up his manager. We're like, hey, man,
- 15:36Speaker 1: let's let's get Lee Fields in on this action. And
- 15:39Speaker 1: he did a tremendous job playing the role of Sunhouse's
- 15:43Speaker 1: decapitated head. Have I hooked you yet? Are you? Like?
- 15:46Speaker 1: What the hell are you talking about? I'm gonna check
- 15:48Speaker 1: this Robert Johnson episode out. You've mentioned Lee Field Sonhouse's
- 15:51Speaker 1: head and Robert fucking Johnson. I hope, so get in
- 15:55Speaker 1: there and check that out. Seven to four also says Jake,
- 15:59Speaker 1: Thanks so much for everything you do on your podcast.
- 16:01Speaker 1: I took your advice about listening to Lee Field's man,
- 16:04Speaker 1: I'm absolutely a huge fan of his now Sentimental Fool
- 16:07Speaker 1: an incredible album. I spent it at least twice a week.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Thanks man, Rock a Roller all right? You got it? Yeah?
- 16:12Speaker 1: Lee Fields is no fucking joke. Check that out a
- 16:14Speaker 1: lot of texts. Let's keep going through here. What do
- 16:16Speaker 1: we got? What do we got? What do we got?
- 16:18Speaker 1: What do we got? What do we got? What do
- 16:19Speaker 1: we got?
- 16:19Speaker 2: Ah?
- 16:22Speaker 1: Hi, my name is Jared and I'm a huge fan
- 16:24Speaker 1: of Disgrace and bad Lands. I was wondering if you
- 16:26Speaker 1: have any merch for sale? Geez oh, Jared, come on.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Merch is a touchy subject around here. We are all
- 16:34Speaker 1: out of merch. We've got new stuff coming for you.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I need to get on it. That's my answer. I apologize.
- 16:39Speaker 1: What else do we got? Hey? Jake, big fan from
- 16:42Speaker 1: Canada here. I was curious if you've ever read Al
- 16:44Speaker 1: Jorgenson's book, and if you've ever considered doing a podcast
- 16:47Speaker 1: or YouTube video on his crazy story that Al Jorgenson is,
- 16:52Speaker 1: of course the mastermind behind the industrial band Ministry. And no,
- 16:57Speaker 1: I haven't read the book. I've seen Ministry life before
- 17:00Speaker 1: a couple of times. I love them and you know,
- 17:04Speaker 1: thanks for reminding me. He goes on to this Texter
- 17:06Speaker 1: goes on from the five to one nine to say,
- 17:07Speaker 1: I would also be curious to your opinion on the
- 17:09Speaker 1: validity of his claims. I don't know what old Al
- 17:13Speaker 1: is spewing, but now I'm intrigued, so maybe I'll check
- 17:15Speaker 1: that out. What else we got here from the text?
- 17:17Speaker 1: All right, last text here from the four two four
- 17:21Speaker 1: I Love You show. I listened to every single episode
- 17:23Speaker 1: and listened to the re releases and the new releases.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I work as a programmer, and your show really helps
- 17:28Speaker 1: me get through the day. Your show is very informative,
- 17:31Speaker 1: but not like a boring classroom setup. It really helped
- 17:34Speaker 1: me communicate to my coworkers whose kind of music is
- 17:37Speaker 1: rock and rollish. Thank you for helping me sound cool.
- 17:40Speaker 1: That you were helping me sound cool. Keep it up,
- 17:42Speaker 1: looking forward to the future. Jamie j A I M
- 17:45Speaker 1: I E. From the four two four. Well, Jamie, I
- 17:48Speaker 1: like this text because you know, disgrace Land goes deep,
- 17:55Speaker 1: goes real deep, and that's by design, that's what the
- 17:58Speaker 1: podcast is, that's baked into the cake, so to speak.
- 18:03Speaker 1: But it was brought to my attention about a year
- 18:06Speaker 1: ago that there's this entirely not Jamie. I don't know
- 18:09Speaker 1: who you are, and I don't know how old you are,
- 18:11Speaker 1: but I'm guessing you're a little bit younger than me.
- 18:13Speaker 1: And it was brought to my attention that there's this
- 18:16Speaker 1: entire new generation of young twenty somethings who are obsessed
- 18:22Speaker 1: with classic rock but are perhaps not as knowledgeable because
- 18:27Speaker 1: they didn't grow up anywhere near it or around it.
- 18:30Speaker 1: It's music that their parents listened to or listen to.
- 18:35Speaker 1: It's great music. There's all these amazing bile picks being made,
- 18:38Speaker 1: Queen Elton John, great movies about classic rock, almost famous,
- 18:44Speaker 1: you know, Fast Times at Ridgemont High not classic rock,
- 18:47Speaker 1: but great soundtrack, etc. All these real iconic touchstones in
- 18:51Speaker 1: our culture that rub up against classic rock. But it
- 18:55Speaker 1: can be intimidating for younger people, which is an idea
- 18:59Speaker 1: and a notion that I I never really thought about
- 19:01Speaker 1: before because I just grew up surrounded by it. I've
- 19:05Speaker 1: gone through so many stages of classic rock, you know,
- 19:08Speaker 1: like I hated it for a long time. I denied
- 19:11Speaker 1: it even though I loved it. It's just what you
- 19:15Speaker 1: do if you're my age and you've grown up in
- 19:18Speaker 1: punk and hardcore and classic rock. You know, it comes
- 19:21Speaker 1: to you first, and then it bores the shit out
- 19:22Speaker 1: of you, and then it's overplayed, and then you come
- 19:24Speaker 1: back to it and you love it, and you start
- 19:27Speaker 1: a podcast that utilizes the history of classic rock most
- 19:31Speaker 1: of the time, along with some modern stuff. But I
- 19:34Speaker 1: just really got into this idea that there was this
- 19:37Speaker 1: whole generation of coming listeners who are intrigued by classic
- 19:43Speaker 1: rock yet kind of intimidated by it perhaps or at
- 19:47Speaker 1: the very least want to hear more about it, and
- 19:50Speaker 1: don't have a place to do it besides classic rock radio.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And classic rock radio is you know, no offense to
- 19:57Speaker 1: classic rock radio guys, but it it's not my thing.
- 20:02Speaker 1: You know, it is a thing, it's not my thing.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I think classic rock is one of the most misunderstood
- 20:08Speaker 1: genres of music or miss that's not right. It's one
- 20:10Speaker 1: of the most miss presented genres of music. It might
- 20:15Speaker 1: be the coolest genre of music, but it is presented
- 20:18Speaker 1: in an incredibly uncool way and has been presented that
- 20:23Speaker 1: way for decades. And you know, I'm not saying I'm
- 20:26Speaker 1: making a make classic rock great again hat, but I
- 20:31Speaker 1: am kind of in the front of my mind thinking
- 20:34Speaker 1: about how do we make classic rock cool all of us,
- 20:37Speaker 1: you know, like, I don't want to be exclusionary, and
- 20:41Speaker 1: I'm certainly not trying to come off like a snotty
- 20:44Speaker 1: record store geek with Disgraceland. I'm very happy to receive
- 20:48Speaker 1: this text from Jamie. So one of the things I'm
- 20:52Speaker 1: doing about it, that's the YouTube channel that I've been
- 20:55Speaker 1: talking about constantly. But you'll find when you go to
- 20:58Speaker 1: the YouTube channel that not only are you stories on
- 21:01Speaker 1: our Disgraceland YouTube channel that aren't part of our Disgraceland
- 21:04Speaker 1: podcast feed, the stories are a little bit broader, they're
- 21:10Speaker 1: not as deep. The formats different, and the medium is different.
- 21:13Speaker 1: YouTube is a different place. It's a wider, bigger space.
- 21:19Speaker 1: So I feel like it allows us the opportunity to
- 21:23Speaker 1: not go as deep play a little bit up, closer
- 21:26Speaker 1: to the surface, and perhaps reach some other folks who
- 21:33Speaker 1: might be put off rough it's too strong, but just
- 21:38Speaker 1: you know, not as into the deep, deep deep dives
- 21:41Speaker 1: we do on Disgraceland. And you know, not that not
- 21:46Speaker 1: that we're being like, not that we're in the shadow
- 21:48Speaker 1: under the pool. Over on YouTube, we're offering you stories
- 21:50Speaker 1: that you, even if you're a huge music fan, you
- 21:54Speaker 1: might not have heard before. But I'm not doing it
- 21:57Speaker 1: in a way where I'm comprehensively, you know, drilling down
- 22:01Speaker 1: as deep as we do in Disgraceland. And that's on purpose,
- 22:04Speaker 1: and I'm hoping to bring some folks in to the
- 22:07Speaker 1: Disgraceland universe who might be sitting there at the edge
- 22:12Speaker 1: of the pool dipping their toe in and are ready
- 22:14Speaker 1: to jump. So come on in. It's a big pool.
- 22:16Speaker 1: We got room for all of you. I've been ranting.
- 22:19Speaker 1: You know, those are texts, There are voicemails before that.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Six one seven nine zero six six six three eight.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Send of your text your voicemails. You can DM me
- 22:29Speaker 1: as well at Disgraceland pod, on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter,
- 22:32Speaker 1: and I'll respond either there in app or here in
- 22:35Speaker 1: the after party like I am to Oh hey, it's
- 22:38Speaker 1: Caitlin on Instagram who sent in a picture of her
- 22:41Speaker 1: and her dad at the Lennard Skinnered crash site after
- 22:45Speaker 1: hearing our recent episode on Skinnered. Thanks Kaitlin. Got another
- 22:49Speaker 1: airplane crash story from rock history coming into your feed
- 22:54Speaker 1: this week with our story on Otis Redding I hope
- 22:57Speaker 1: you guys have heard that, and I look forward to
- 22:59Speaker 1: talking about it with you all next week's after party.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Hit me up at disgracelampod on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and
- 23:05Speaker 1: Facebook on your Otis writing episode thoughts or just your
- 23:08Speaker 1: otis reading thoughts in general. I love otis? You love Otis?
- 23:11Speaker 1: How do you not lovotus? Everyone loves Otis? All right,
- 23:14Speaker 1: another story we have for you guys in the media
- 23:15Speaker 1: future is the story I'm Peter Tosh, which is not
- 23:17Speaker 1: a podcast, it's a video and like I said before,
- 23:20Speaker 1: it's going to only be available on the YouTube channel
- 23:22Speaker 1: that's coming this weekend Sunday, March nineteenth. Go to the
- 23:25Speaker 1: YouTube dot com slash at disgrace lamppod to subscribe to
- 23:29Speaker 1: the Disgraceland video channel so you do not miss these
- 23:32Speaker 1: extra stories. Peter Tosh, Whaylan Jennings, Debbie Harry and Moore
- 23:36Speaker 1: get in there and I'll get right back after this
- 23:38Speaker 1: with some recommendations. All right, another week in the Disgraceland
- 23:56Speaker 1: after party, and another week without a theme song. For
- 23:58Speaker 1: the recommendations part, you guys are living letting me down,
- 24:01Speaker 1: letting me down. Actually, my guys at double evs are
- 24:03Speaker 1: letting me down more than you guys are. They're professional musicians,
- 24:05Speaker 1: they get paid to make this shit up for a living.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Where the hell are they with the theme song? I
- 24:09Speaker 1: want my toss salad in my scrambled eggs. The fuck
- 24:12Speaker 1: is happening? Kelsey Grammer never had to stand for this affront,
- 24:15Speaker 1: so I'm not sure why I have to. I'm an
- 24:17Speaker 1: award winning podcaster for Fox sakes, so for original music, score,
- 24:21Speaker 1: music supervision, no less, and I can't get a goddamn
- 24:23Speaker 1: cheesy segment theme song? What is happening? This shit is cold?
- 24:27Speaker 3: All right?
- 24:27Speaker 1: I digress. My recommendations, so many recommendations. As like I said,
- 24:31Speaker 1: I was traveling this past week, so I had the
- 24:33Speaker 1: opportunity to take in a lot of content. Someone recommended
- 24:37Speaker 1: Chuck Closterman's book The Nineties to me a while back.
- 24:39Speaker 1: I'm not sure who, but thank you. And then someone
- 24:41Speaker 1: bought me the book. I'm also I'm not sure who,
- 24:44Speaker 1: so thank you. Anyway. I rebought the book while I
- 24:47Speaker 1: was in Las Vegas. I was in the airport and
- 24:49Speaker 1: I didn't want to decide it. I didn't want to
- 24:51Speaker 1: stare into my phone for five hours on the plane.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I had nothing else to read, so saw the book
- 24:55Speaker 1: in the bookstore. I bought it again, read it, read
- 24:59Speaker 1: a lot of it on the plane. I'm still reading
- 25:01Speaker 1: it this week. This book is incredible, and it's not
- 25:04Speaker 1: just a testament to the second greatest generation of my lifetime,
- 25:07Speaker 1: Generation X, second of the World War Two generation, the
- 25:10Speaker 1: greatest generation. But again I digress The Nineties by Klosterman.
- 25:14Speaker 1: It's an incredibly smart take on not only the decade
- 25:19Speaker 1: of the nineteen nineties, but on our perception of the
- 25:22Speaker 1: nineteen nineties, often our misinformed perception of the nineteen nineties.
- 25:27Speaker 1: And Closterman backs up this disruption of the popular narrative
- 25:32Speaker 1: of what the nineties was with wait for it, data, yes,
- 25:38Speaker 1: actual data, polls, television ratings, record sales, all that data.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And this is not a dry read by any means.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I'm not trying to sell it like that. It's not.
- 25:47Speaker 1: It's everything's contextualized in his great style of writing, which
- 25:51Speaker 1: is humorous and also very much of the nineties. The
- 25:56Speaker 1: results of what the nineties were are not what you
- 26:00Speaker 1: think the actually what actually happened. Even though I lived
- 26:03Speaker 1: through it, my view of that decade is colored by
- 26:08Speaker 1: the popular narrative that has sprung up in the decades since.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And this is fascinating, but it's not surprising. It's too
- 26:16Speaker 1: much to go into right here. But if you're all
- 26:18Speaker 1: interested in the ten years and informed this show probably
- 26:21Speaker 1: more than any other decade in history, or if you
- 26:22Speaker 1: just want to get your fill of oh well, whatever,
- 26:24Speaker 1: never mind, then read The Nineties by Chuck Klosterman. You'll
- 26:28Speaker 1: dig it. That's what I'm reading, all right. I'm watching
- 26:31Speaker 1: or I watched. I watched half the Oscars. Who watched
- 26:35Speaker 1: the whole show. It's a long show, man, and very serious.
- 26:40Speaker 1: It's very serious this here, the Oscars are getting very serious.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I guess that's what happens when your best leading man
- 26:50Speaker 1: Oscar winner gets up and smacks one of the presenters.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Next year, you're gonna come back very serious. Anyways, I
- 26:57Speaker 1: was happy that All Quiet on the Western Front one
- 26:59Speaker 1: for best or very much deserved, in my opinion. I
- 27:02Speaker 1: did not see Everything Everywhere, all at once, so I
- 27:04Speaker 1: can't therefore comment on the rest of the Oscars because
- 27:07Speaker 1: that movie kind of won everything. Oscar Everywhere all at
- 27:10Speaker 1: once I won seven awards, I think, so people loved it.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I believe him I'm gonna watch. I'm probably gonna watch
- 27:18Speaker 1: it tonight. If you saw it, let me know what
- 27:20Speaker 1: you think. Let me know what you thought of the show.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I like critiquing awards shows. It's fun for me. Like
- 27:26Speaker 1: I said, I thought, this one is very serious and
- 27:28Speaker 1: not particularly exciting. As I mentioned on previous after parties,
- 27:33Speaker 1: I'm watching. I'm also watching Party Down. I finished the
- 27:36Speaker 1: first two seasons like I said I would, and I
- 27:38Speaker 1: started the reboot season three. I loved the first episode.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Gonna watch the second episode tonight. I'm excited to see
- 27:44Speaker 1: where the rest of the season goes. And if I'm
- 27:45Speaker 1: gonna miss Lizzie Kaplan, I can't tell you. I probably am.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I think she's great. I don't know. Maybe the show
- 27:52Speaker 1: can exist without her, I hope. So. I also rewatched
- 27:55Speaker 1: Heat all right after reading some of Klosterman's book. I
- 28:01Speaker 1: was in the mood for something nineties and I saw
- 28:04Speaker 1: Heat in the theaters when it came out. I've watched
- 28:07Speaker 1: bits and pieces of it passively over the years as
- 28:09Speaker 1: its appeared on cable or whatever, but I've never sat
- 28:13Speaker 1: down and watched Heat from start to finish again. And
- 28:16Speaker 1: I don't know, man, I think it might be one
- 28:17Speaker 1: of my favorite movies ever. I'm not sure it's so
- 28:20Speaker 1: fucking good. I'm not telling anyone who's seen this movie anything.
- 28:23Speaker 1: They don't know. This movie is a masterpiece. I just
- 28:26Speaker 1: can't believe I haven't given it at the time it deserves.
- 28:28Speaker 1: It wasn't on purpose. It wasn't like fuck Heat. It
- 28:31Speaker 1: wasn't like I don't like heat. I loved it when
- 28:34Speaker 1: I saw the writing, the acting, the pacing, the ending,
- 28:37Speaker 1: The cast, fucking cast is incredible. Tone lok Al Pacino,
- 28:41Speaker 1: God de Niro, John Voight, Henry Rawlins, God, who else
- 28:48Speaker 1: that weird ted guy from Silence to the Lamb? So
- 28:51Speaker 1: many great actors. Oh fucking uh, homeboy just died? Oh god,
- 28:57Speaker 1: what is his name? He was snubbed at the Oscars?
- 28:59Speaker 1: Hold on, gonna find this guy? Uh? He's great. Uh.
- 29:05Speaker 1: And Tom Sizemore. How did I forget that? I'm really
- 29:09Speaker 1: upset of myself for not having that at the tip
- 29:10Speaker 1: of my tongue. Tom Sizemore is in it. And of course, uh,
- 29:14Speaker 1: our friend Val Kilmer not our friend, but you might
- 29:17Speaker 1: want to be friend. And he's great. They're all great,
- 29:20Speaker 1: Ashley Judd, Like I said, the cast it's incredible goes on. Uh,
- 29:23Speaker 1: but you know, I'm wondering, is this one of my
- 29:27Speaker 1: top five movies of all time? I don't know. I
- 29:30Speaker 1: don't know quick without thinking my top five movies of
- 29:32Speaker 1: all time? Without thinking Jaws, Goodfella's Godfather, pulp fiction, Boogie Nights?
- 29:36Speaker 1: Is Heat better than any of those five? I don't know? Again, Jaws,
- 29:40Speaker 1: Goodfella's Godfather, pulp fiction, Boogie Knights Again? Is Heat better
- 29:44Speaker 1: than any of those five? Uh? Maybe it's better than
- 29:48Speaker 1: booge Knights. I don't know. Maybe that top five list sucks.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I also don't know it could top five movies of
- 29:54Speaker 1: all time. That's a hard fucking list to come up with.
- 29:56Speaker 1: What are your top five movies? Six one, seven nights?
- 29:59Speaker 1: There are six, six, three eight. Leave me a voicemail,
- 30:01Speaker 1: let me know, send me a text sixty one seven
- 30:04Speaker 1: nine zero, six, six, six, three eight Top five movies
- 30:07Speaker 1: of all time? Five, don't send me six, don't send
- 30:10Speaker 1: me ten, don't send me four or three, two or one.
- 30:14Speaker 1: You can get down there. I'm gonna be impressed. But
- 30:17Speaker 1: five is wicked hard? So is he to top five movie?
- 30:21Speaker 1: Is it worthy of my list? Does my list suck?
- 30:23Speaker 1: How flawed is my list? What does this say about
- 30:25Speaker 1: me that three movies in my top five are from
- 30:27Speaker 1: the nineties and the other two or from the seventies.
- 30:29Speaker 1: What does that say about the decade I came of
- 30:31Speaker 1: agent or the decade that I was born in. I
- 30:33Speaker 1: don't have answers to these questions. All I know is
- 30:36Speaker 1: that heat is the shit, all right. What I'm listening
- 30:38Speaker 1: to I'm listening to the Washed Up Emo podcast with
- 30:43Speaker 1: Tom Mullen because I'm a fucking narcissistic ego.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Mate.
- 30:47Speaker 1: No, I just sat for an interview with Tom, so yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I am a narcissistic egomaniac, and in preparation I went
- 30:54Speaker 1: back and crushed a couple of Tom's episodes from Washed
- 30:57Speaker 1: Up Demo. Great podcast. I listen to the Gi one
- 31:01Speaker 1: from GI from Fugazi as an episode, ted Leo from Chisel,
- 31:04Speaker 1: There's Walter from quicksand there's so many. Tom makes a
- 31:07Speaker 1: great show. If you're all interested in emo or hardcore
- 31:11Speaker 1: or post hardcore or whatever the hell you want to
- 31:13Speaker 1: call it, you probably already know about Washed Up Emo,
- 31:15Speaker 1: but if you don't, I highly recommend you check it out.
- 31:18Speaker 1: That's Washed Up Emo wherever you get podcasts.
- 31:22Speaker 4: I will be back in a flash.
- 31:44Speaker 1: All right, stage fright. Let's recap Number one previously exclusive
- 31:48Speaker 1: episodes of Disgraceland coming every weekday in March. Number two,
- 31:53Speaker 1: New Peter Tosh episode coming to YouTube this weekend. Number three,
