- 0:02How many decisions will you make today?
- 0:05Not the obvious ones. Not the ones on your calendar.
- 0:09All of them. Research suggests that you'll
- 0:13make around 20,000 decisions today.
- 0:17Most of them won't feel significant in the moment.
- 0:20They're shaped by habit, routine, and the pace of the
- 0:23day. And once those decisions are
- 0:26made, they don't disappear. They leave residue.
- 0:31They shape habits, expectations, and processes.
- 0:35They quietly become norms. Over time, their effects stack.
- 0:42They reinforce patterns. They shape how you show up.
- 0:46They shape how people experience you and what you built.
- 0:51And this is where the tension begins.
- 0:54What you built may be successful.
- 0:57It may be working, it may be something that you are genuinely
- 1:01proud of, but success as a way of surfacing A deeper question
- 1:07is what being built actually aligned with what matters most
- 1:12right now? That tension between what we
- 1:15built and what we're built for is where many leaders live.
- 1:20Not because of bad decisions, but because decisions made in
- 1:24one season quietly carry forward into the next.
- 1:30Decisions shaped by opportunity, by responsibility, by what was
- 1:35required at the time. Those decisions explain where we
- 1:40are. But significance doesn't come
- 1:43from staying where you are. It comes from being intentional
- 1:47about what comes next. And the difference between
- 1:52staying where you are and moving towards significance often comes
- 1:56down to this. Are your decisions being
- 2:00intentionally aimed, or are they simply being shaped by existing
- 2:05patterns? That's a space this episode
- 2:08lives in. Not re examining the past, but
- 2:12becoming more intentional about the direction your decisions are
- 2:16pointing now. We hear the word culture all the
- 2:23time. Organizations talk about it.
- 2:27Leaders reference it. Teams feel it.
- 2:31But culture isn't a slogan. It's not a mission statement.
- 2:35It's not what's written in a deck or framed on a wall.
- 2:40Culture shows up in the small moments, in the decisions that
- 2:44get made when no one is watching.
- 2:47It's in what's prioritized when time is tight.
- 2:51It's in what gets tolerated, repeated, or quietly overlooked.
- 2:57Over time, those decisions stop feeling like decisions at all.
- 3:01They simply become what's normal.
- 3:05And that's true for organizations, and it's true for
- 3:09us personally. For leaders, culture is about
- 3:13how people actually experience your leadership and how the
- 3:16outside world experiences the brand.
- 3:20For individuals, culture becomes personal brand, not what you say
- 3:25about yourself, just who you're known to be.
- 3:30And culture is always forming. If decisions are intentional,
- 3:35culture forms by design, and if they're not, culture forms by
- 3:40default. There's no neutral setting.
- 3:43Every decision either reinforces the culture you want or builds
- 3:48the one you did not intend. Over time, culture starts
- 3:53influencing future decisions. Some choices feel natural,
- 3:58others feel harder than they should.
- 4:02That's often when awareness begins to show up, not because
- 4:06anything is falling apart, but because what matters has
- 4:10changed. What once fit the season no
- 4:14longer carries the same weight. And when that happens, the same
- 4:19decision making patterns won't take you to where you want to go
- 4:23next, which is where intention starts to really matter.
- 4:28Not to undo the past, not to reject what's been built, but to
- 4:33decide consciously what your decisions will reinforce from
- 4:38here on. And this is where whiskey gives
- 4:41us language for what's happening.
- 4:44A master distiller doesn't walk into a distillery and say, let's
- 4:49see what happens. Great whiskey isn't the result
- 4:53of a single brilliant decision. It's the result of many aligned,
- 4:58consistent decisions, all true to what that whiskey and that
- 5:02distillery are meant to be. The mash bill, the yeast, the
- 5:08barrel, the environment, the time.
- 5:12Each decision builds on the one before it, and just as important
- 5:17as what the distiller does is what the distiller doesn't do.
- 5:22They don't change the mash bill on a whim.
- 5:25They don't rush to process because someone is impatient.
- 5:29They don't add ingredients that don't belong.
- 5:33They don't let outside noise redefine the identity of the
- 5:36whiskey, and they don't invite everyone to make decisions about
- 5:41the process because when everyone is deciding, no one is
- 5:46directing, and when no one is directing, consistency
- 5:50disappears. You can still make alcohol
- 5:54through random decisions. The process will move forward
- 5:58and something will come out the other end, but you'll end up
- 6:02with a forgettable whiskey when the decisions aren't aligned,
- 6:06consistent and true to that brand.
- 6:11And that's the parallel in organizations and in our own
- 6:15lives. Unaligned decisions don't stop
- 6:18progress, They dilute significance.
- 6:23Your work will still get done. Activity will stay high,
- 6:27momentum continues. But the result lacks depth.
- 6:32It lacks coherence. It lacks meaning, not because
- 6:37effort is missing, but because alignment is missing.
- 6:43So a few years ago, I named something out loud.
- 6:47I said I don't want to get old. Not in the sense that I don't
- 6:51expect to age, that's inevitable, but in the sense of
- 6:56losing my freedom. I don't want a future that keeps
- 7:00me on the couch or sidelines me from life.
- 7:04What I was really naming was a vision, not a goal.
- 7:09Freedom, mobility, strength, the ability to go anywhere and do
- 7:16anything I wanted. Goals have endpoints.
- 7:21Lose weight, go to the gym five days a week.
- 7:25Vision does not have an end. Vision reshapes how you live.
- 7:31Once that vision became clear, my decisions finally had
- 7:34something to be measured against earlier in my life.
- 7:40Different things mattered. I ate whatever I wanted.
- 7:43I trained to get bigger. The decisions that I made fit
- 7:47that season of my life. But that vision shifted.
- 7:54And when what matters shifts, decisions have to shift too.
- 7:59So my daily choices changed. I removed gluten and
- 8:03inflammatory foods. I limited processed foods and
- 8:08sugars, and I choose to move my body every day.
- 8:14Sometimes that movement is lifting weights, other days it's
- 8:18yoga. Some days Pilates.
- 8:21The activity changes, but the direction doesn't.
- 8:26Over time, those decisions stop requiring energy or even
- 8:30explanation. Anyone who knows me knows how I
- 8:34eat. They know I've moved my body
- 8:36daily, not because I announce it, but because consistency
- 8:42creates clarity. Those decisions didn't remain
- 8:46tactics. They became identity.
- 8:50This is simply who I am now because it's aligned with where
- 8:54I want to go. What happens personally is
- 8:59exactly what happens organizationally.
- 9:02Leaders are tasked with curating vision and aligning people and
- 9:07systems and decisions around that vision.
- 9:11That means a lot of decisions. When a culture is aligned,
- 9:15leadership feels lighter, decisions filter themselves, and
- 9:21people move with clarity. When culture is misaligned,
- 9:26leadership can feel heavier. More decisions land on the
- 9:31leader's desk. More clarification is required.
- 9:35More energy goes into correcting, controlling, and
- 9:39managing tension. Not because people don't care,
- 9:44but because the decisions are being made without that shared
- 9:48direction. In whiskey making, alignment
- 9:52protects the final expression. In leadership, alignment
- 9:56protects culture. What gets approved, what gets
- 10:02postponed, what keeps getting one more chance?
- 10:07Those decisions teach people what really matters, and over
- 10:12time, culture either becomes intentionally shaped or quietly
- 10:18inherited. That's the leadership moment.
- 10:22Not control, not micromanagement.
- 10:26Clarity. If any of this feels familiar,
- 10:32here are a few things worth noticing.
- 10:36What decisions feel heavier than they should right now?
- 10:40That weight is often a sign that those decisions are being made
- 10:44without a clear reference point. What are you having to step into
- 10:50more than you want to? When alignment is missing,
- 10:54leaders compensate with more effort.
- 10:57When the alignment is clear, decisions carry themselves
- 11:01further. What behaviors keep repeating,
- 11:06even though they don't reflect what you say matters most?
- 11:12Patterns like that don't show up by accident.
- 11:15They're reinforced by what's allowed or rewarded or left
- 11:20unchecked. Those aren't failures.
- 11:24Those are signals. Signals that culture, whether
- 11:28orgs, organizational or personal, is being shaped
- 11:32somewhere other than intention. Alignment starts by naming the
- 11:37destination. For organizations, that shows up
- 11:41as mission and vision. For leaders, it's clarity about
- 11:46what the season actually requires.
- 11:50For individuals, it's purpose what truly matters now, not what
- 11:56used to say it out loud. Clarity that stays internal
- 12:03rarely shapes decisions. Once it's named, decisions
- 12:07finally have something to be measured against.
- 12:11Then ask one simple question. When you have a decision to
- 12:14make, does this decision move us toward what matters or away from
- 12:20it? That's it.
- 12:23Not perfection. Not intensity.
- 12:27Consistency. Some days, pressure will win.
- 12:32Old patterns will resurface. Identity, whether it's personal
- 12:37or cultural, isn't shaped by those moments.
- 12:42It's shaped by what you return to.
- 12:47If you've ever been to a whiskey tasting, you take notes on what
- 12:50you experience so you can remember those things that
- 12:54really stood out to you. Here's what stood out to me from
- 12:58this conversation. You're tasting notes may be
- 13:01different. One culture is the compound
- 13:06result of decisions. Organizational culture and
- 13:10personal brand are shaped the same way.
- 13:14Significance isn't blocked by effort, but by misalignment.
- 13:20You can work hard and still dilute what you're trying to
- 13:23build. And the Third Point is identity
- 13:28forms. When decisions become normal,
- 13:32what no longer feels optional is who you are becoming.
- 13:38Great whiskey doesn't happen by accident.
- 13:41Every decision is aligned. Every choice is consistent,
- 13:46every element is true to what it is meant to become.
- 13:51The same is true for leadership, the same is true for culture,
- 13:56and the same is true for us. Our past decisions explain how
- 14:01we got here, but our future decisions determine who we will
- 14:05become. As you move forward, remember
- 14:11clarity isn't found, it's crafted.
- 14:17Thanks for listening to Crafted Clarity.
