- 0:00Speaker 1: Ten out four Back to the basics and healthcare with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Balance Life Chiropractic. We've got doctor Harley with us.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hello, doctor Harley, Hey John, get.
- 0:06Speaker 1: To talk about men's health this month.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we always think of June we have
- 0:11Speaker 3: Father's Day, it's also Men's health Awareness months.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Yeah, we ignore that kind of thing.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We just walk it off, right.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Yeah. So that's why I think it's important to talk
- 0:21Speaker 3: about men's health because we do tend to just kind of,
- 0:24Speaker 3: you know, man it out and.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Be like, it's fine, I'll deal with it later. But
- 0:28Speaker 2: later does come.
- 0:29Speaker 3: It does.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I was just thinking of there was a billboard that
- 0:31Speaker 1: went viral because it said something along the lines of
- 0:35Speaker 1: men are stubborn when it comes to healthcare, and then
- 0:38Speaker 1: somebody's prey painted no, we're not, and I was like,
- 0:40Speaker 1: that's hilarious, because we are. We are very stubborn. And
- 0:44Speaker 1: there are numbers and numbers of people that I know
- 0:47Speaker 1: who have had major problems that they just they waited
- 0:50Speaker 1: a long long time before they finally got it. And sadly,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I have a friend who passed away last year because
- 0:55Speaker 1: he waited way too long before he went in to
- 0:57Speaker 1: find out what was wrong. So This is something that
- 0:59Speaker 1: was an eye open for me. This is something we
- 1:00Speaker 1: should all probably take a little more seriously.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Should we. Right. Unfortunately, sometimes it does take something like
- 1:05Speaker 3: that happening for people to really start thinking and caring
- 1:09Speaker 3: about their health ahead of time. And don't mean to
- 1:11Speaker 3: pick on men, but they do tend to be more
- 1:15Speaker 3: delaying in seeking care.
- 1:17Speaker 1: So when we feel because like you know, you feel
- 1:20Speaker 1: things in your body, and when you feel some little
- 1:22Speaker 1: issue here or there, instead of putting it off and
- 1:25Speaker 1: gun AD's probably not a big deal, you should probably
- 1:28Speaker 1: listen to your body, shouldn't you.
- 1:29Speaker 3: It's so much easier to take care of a problem
- 1:31Speaker 3: when we deal with it as a mole hill versus
- 1:34Speaker 3: waiting for that mole hill to grow into a mountain.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, So, what are some things that would be maybe
- 1:39Speaker 1: a good place for us to start, because I know
- 1:42Speaker 1: when you think about the body, there's a whole lot
- 1:43Speaker 1: to the body. But first thing I think of when
- 1:46Speaker 1: I think of chiropractice, I think of our back.
- 1:48Speaker 2: So would that be a good place to start, right?
- 1:49Speaker 3: You know, when you think of chiropraxing of back pain,
- 1:52Speaker 3: low back pain more specific to men, for whatever reason,
- 1:55Speaker 3: it tends to be men tend to have more of
- 1:57Speaker 3: the low back pain and women tend to be more
- 1:59Speaker 3: on the net obviously.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You know, there's because guys are a pain in the
- 2:03Speaker 1: neck and that's what we do to the women. Sadly, sorry, ladies,
- 2:06Speaker 1: it's very possible, man, I know, maybe that's not what
- 2:08Speaker 1: it is.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, So, I mean we carry a lot of tension.
- 2:11Speaker 2: You know, we sit a lot.
- 2:12Speaker 3: They say sitting is the new smoking. So you know,
- 2:15Speaker 3: men don't really stretch as much either. We lose a
- 2:17Speaker 3: lot of flexibility as we get older, especially men lose
- 2:20Speaker 3: a lot more of it. So that doesn't help because
- 2:23Speaker 3: our joints are meant to be flexible and move a
- 2:26Speaker 3: lot easier. But as things start stiffening up as we
- 2:28Speaker 3: get older, we lose a lot of that flexibility and
- 2:31Speaker 3: can start leading to more tension and aches because things
- 2:34Speaker 3: aren't moving like they should.
- 2:36Speaker 1: So one of the things that men should do is
- 2:37Speaker 1: stretch a little more.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Definitely, stretch more.
- 2:40Speaker 3: You know, the younger the better because you know, as
- 2:42Speaker 3: you go from teenagers to in your twenties, you'll lose
- 2:44Speaker 3: a lot of flexibility. So if you keep up with
- 2:46Speaker 3: your stretching, you know you won't lose it as quickly
- 2:49Speaker 3: versus you know, when you get to be forty to
- 2:51Speaker 3: fifty and you haven't stretched maybe in twenty years, and
- 2:54Speaker 3: you're gonna have to start at ground zero. It's gonna
- 2:56Speaker 3: take some time to build some of that stretch and
- 2:58Speaker 3: flexibility back.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Is there a best way to start when it comes
- 3:01Speaker 1: to let's just use an example. Let's say there's a
- 3:03Speaker 1: guy that's, like, I don't know, fifty, and let's say
- 3:05Speaker 1: he's overweight and he hasn't stretched, and well, I haven't
- 3:08Speaker 1: stretched in a long time. So what would be a
- 3:10Speaker 1: good place for me to start?
- 3:12Speaker 3: You know, I think back to if you were in
- 3:14Speaker 3: high school and played sports, some of the warm up
- 3:17Speaker 3: stretching that you did then is a good place to start.
- 3:20Speaker 3: You know, maybe not going as intense, but even just
- 3:22Speaker 3: you know, moving your arms out, you know, raise them,
- 3:25Speaker 3: ount try to touch your toes, even if you just
- 3:28Speaker 3: hang there, you don't need to actually touch your.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Touch my own toes. Yeah, I haven't done that in years.
- 3:33Speaker 3: So I mean if you just like, you know, bend
- 3:35Speaker 3: over hag and you'll feel that stretched through your low
- 3:37Speaker 3: back and you can take a step out and then
- 3:41Speaker 3: you know, go a little bit wider stands, trying to
- 3:42Speaker 3: touch your toes, get a good stretch for that, leaning
- 3:45Speaker 3: over to one side. Yeah, just really working on trying
- 3:48Speaker 3: to stretch the legs out. Tight hamstrings can lead to
- 3:51Speaker 3: a lot of low back pains a lottimes. That can
- 3:52Speaker 3: be a problem for people that their hamstrings are just
- 3:55Speaker 3: really tight and that can lead to a lot of
- 3:56Speaker 3: their back pain.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But just you got to start somewhere.
- 3:59Speaker 1: See stretching that I do is like when I reach
- 4:01Speaker 1: across the table to grab something off Heidie's plate, you
- 4:04Speaker 1: grab a fry. That's only stretching. I get. So probably
- 4:08Speaker 1: should maybe work on a different type of stretching.
- 4:10Speaker 2: You'll definitely add some more.
- 4:12Speaker 1: All right, So standing up and like bending over and
- 4:15Speaker 1: touching your toes or like that, would that be good
- 4:17Speaker 1: a good place to start.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I'deel like that's a good starter point.
- 4:21Speaker 3: You can work from there and you just kind of
- 4:23Speaker 3: move with what feels comfortable or actually maybe a little uncomfortable.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You want to, you know, go to feel a little
- 4:28Speaker 2: bit of stretch and you're like, oh, I can feel
- 4:30Speaker 2: that pole.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I didn't realize how bad I was at stretching because
- 4:33Speaker 1: like I don't really pay attention to that until we
- 4:36Speaker 1: were doing some yoga last year. Yeah, guys, I tried yoga.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I don't know if I could really even say I tried.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I was in a room with people who were doing yoga,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and I watched them stretch and band and I'm like,
- 4:47Speaker 1: how the heck are you doing all of that? And
- 4:48Speaker 1: then I realized how unflexible I am.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yoga or inflexible, the beginner yoga class is a good
- 4:53Speaker 3: place to start. You might feel a little out of
- 4:57Speaker 3: the loop because.
- 4:57Speaker 2: You know, some people are very flexible.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I should have tried to begin beginners beginner's yoga, because yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 1: I was way behind. But if somebody listening is going,
- 5:04Speaker 1: you know, I probably need to get some get some
- 5:08Speaker 1: advice from doctor Harley, because I got I've done none
- 5:10Speaker 1: of this stuff. I should start doing something. What is
- 5:13Speaker 1: the best way for them to connect with you, to
- 5:15Speaker 1: kind of take that first step if if June is
- 5:17Speaker 1: their beginning of their men's health month, Yeah.
