- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, good afternoon, listeners. Thank you for listening to Lament
- 0:03Speaker 1: of Hope podcast, and I'm very grateful. This is going
- 0:08Speaker 1: to be a little unconventional, because if you're watching this,
- 0:10Speaker 1: you're going to see it's just the logo for the podcast,
- 0:14Speaker 1: but Dr. Katina and I really tried, and unfortunately, we
- 0:18Speaker 1: weren't able to do video, but that's okay. You have
- 0:22Speaker 1: an obligation to yourself as a person to obtain righteousness
- 0:27Speaker 1: for yourself, or do you see it more as working
- 0:30Speaker 1: for christ because you know he he gave his life
- 0:34Speaker 1: for you and then secondly how would you navigate people
- 0:38Speaker 1: who may almost in a sense give you so much
- 0:42Speaker 1: reverence like i would feel like that would be so
- 0:44Speaker 1: hard to i don't know maybe that might be hard
- 0:49Speaker 1: to um feel pride in perhaps or also Maybe trying
- 0:56Speaker 1: to explain, no, I'm here to serve because Christ served me.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I just wondered how you would do that as a doctor. Right.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, good question. I mean, I think to start out,
- 1:09Speaker 2: I look at it fairly simply. First off, I think
- 1:12Speaker 2: we're all called to different things. Something that I might
- 1:16Speaker 2: find intolerable, you might find like it's no problem. For me,
- 1:20Speaker 2: living out here, living this kind of simple life, it's
- 1:24Speaker 2: not that much of a problem for me. I can
- 1:26Speaker 2: tolerate all that stuff as long as I'm doing what
- 1:28Speaker 2: I want to do. That stuff I can manage. But
- 1:33Speaker 2: I also think that, you know, I think with our
- 1:36Speaker 2: lives that, you know, I look at my life and
- 1:41Speaker 2: what I was born into. I mean, people in the U.S.
- 1:44Speaker 2: talk about this privilege and this kind of thing, and
- 1:47Speaker 2: it's used in a very negative way. I see this
- 1:50Speaker 2: as something very positive. I was born with incredible privilege.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I was born in the U.S. I was born into
- 1:56Speaker 2: a loving family. I was born into a Christian family
- 2:00Speaker 2: with strong belief. I had the best chances for education,
- 2:07Speaker 2: a chance to go to the best colleges, a chance
- 2:11Speaker 2: to get a baby scholarship, had the chance to go
- 2:13Speaker 2: to medical school. I don't see that as me being
- 2:16Speaker 2: somebody who's got great brain power. I see this all
- 2:19Speaker 2: as being the grace of God and a gift from
- 2:21Speaker 2: God that I was able to do these things. So
- 2:24Speaker 2: I look at my life and I say, well, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: to whom much has been given, much is to be expected.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So I take that quite seriously. I think I was
- 2:33Speaker 2: given a lot in this life, tremendous benefits and privileges
- 2:38Speaker 2: that nobody here in the mountains have gotten. I look
- 2:41Speaker 2: at my own wife and, you know, she grew up
- 2:44Speaker 2: here in the mountains to incredible poverty. You know, she
- 2:48Speaker 2: remembers growing up and friends of hers died of starvation.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I mean, how many of us in America can say that? Yeah,
- 2:53Speaker 2: a friend of mine died of hunger when we were
- 2:54Speaker 2: growing up. I mean, it's unthinkable, right?
- 2:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I think, okay, I grew up with these privileges. I
- 3:00Speaker 2: grew up with this incredible life. How do I kind
- 3:04Speaker 2: of pay God back for that? So I feel like
- 3:07Speaker 2: I have an obligation to serve God. And I think
- 3:10Speaker 2: all of us do. I think if you're a believing Christian,
- 3:14Speaker 2: And you grew up in the U S and you
- 3:16Speaker 2: were given a lot of these gifts and privileges. You
- 3:19Speaker 2: have an obligation to give back. And unfortunately it's been used.
- 3:24Speaker 2: This idea about privilege has been used every negative way.
- 3:26Speaker 2: It's like, well, you got privilege. You can't do anything.
- 3:28Speaker 2: You can't say anything. You're, you know, you have nothing
- 3:31Speaker 2: to say to speak about. Well, it's okay. Great. I'll
- 3:34Speaker 2: be giving, I'll be giving privilege. It was a positive
- 3:36Speaker 2: thing given to me by God. I did nothing to
- 3:38Speaker 2: earn any of this stuff. How do I pay back?
- 3:41Speaker 2: How do I show God? How do I become, how
- 3:45Speaker 2: am I grateful to God with what I was given?
- 3:48Speaker 2: And for me, I think it's manifest in doing what
- 3:50Speaker 2: I'm doing here. I don't see it as that big
- 3:52Speaker 2: a deal. I'm like, well, this is what I feel
- 3:54Speaker 2: I was called to do. God has given me the
- 3:56Speaker 2: tools to do it. Let me just go ahead and
- 3:58Speaker 2: do it and not make a big fuss about it. Yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's pretty uncomfortable when people speak
- 4:07Speaker 2: too well of you. But I'm also very aware that,
- 4:10Speaker 2: you know, today speak well of you, tomorrow they denigrate you.
- 4:13Speaker 2: So I don't get too caught up in what people
- 4:16Speaker 2: say when I either praise you or put you down.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I know what I'm doing here. I'm here to serve God.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And as long as God gives me the strength to
- 4:24Speaker 2: do that, I'll continue. You know, I think the issue
- 4:27Speaker 2: with works and, you know, I think most of us
- 4:31Speaker 2: believers feel that we cannot–
