- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators are
- 0:22Speaker 1: the most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hunt app from the iTunes or Google play store, nor
- 0:29Speaker 1: where you stand with on X they are right off
- 0:37Speaker 1: the right up top, right off the bat the you
- 0:41Speaker 1: know on the couple on an episode ago or to
- 0:44Speaker 1: or know an episode ago. Um, we launched the what's
- 0:50Speaker 1: that called seth Brandon Butler's Cabin burned down by Poacher
- 0:54Speaker 1: go fund me. That's the hell of a name. The
- 0:57Speaker 1: go fund me site is called Brandon Butler's Cabin burned
- 0:59Speaker 1: Down by Poacher, And we gave everybody heads up about
- 1:03Speaker 1: this go funding that was put together for our friend
- 1:05Speaker 1: Brandon Butler, who whose cabin was burnt down. Uh in
- 1:12Speaker 1: mysterious temporal proximity. I like that sentence and mysterious temporal
- 1:17Speaker 1: proximity to him having reported a local poacher who he
- 1:22Speaker 1: I witnessed trying to jack light deer night before Deer
- 1:27Speaker 1: season opened. So Butler's buddy puts up this go funding
- 1:31Speaker 1: site and UM, you are you kind generous folks out
- 1:38Speaker 1: there have been kicking in heavy duty and the things
- 1:42Speaker 1: up to nineteen thousand, seven hundred and sixty eight dollars
- 1:47Speaker 1: four three donors. Now, Butler pointed out that he had
- 1:51Speaker 1: his place insured, but you know, he had all his
- 1:55Speaker 1: heirlooms and stuff there, and he also had a lot
- 1:57Speaker 1: of stuff that he uses to like host people and
- 1:59Speaker 1: do river trip us. And uh is that good dude
- 2:03Speaker 1: that tries to do good stuff with his place. There's
- 2:05Speaker 1: been like a major development and this deal, so we
- 2:07Speaker 1: wanted to have him come back, not just to talk
- 2:09Speaker 1: about the money. And he didn't set this thing up.
- 2:11Speaker 1: His body set it up. Did I clarify that? Yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 1: his buddy set it up. But he's gonna share this
- 2:17Speaker 1: kind of interesting development around this case of his place
- 2:20Speaker 1: getting pretty much smoked down to the ground. Brandon, but
- 2:24Speaker 1: the real quick man, glad you could uh join up
- 2:27Speaker 1: with this real quick here. Well, we'll probably have to
- 2:29Speaker 1: check in with you multiple times as this whole uh
- 2:32Speaker 1: deal plays out with your place getting burnt down, But uh,
- 2:37Speaker 1: give us as much as you can give us right
- 2:38Speaker 1: now about like the latest. Yeah, it was hard not
- 2:42Speaker 1: to tell you guys everything I knew last time, and
- 2:44Speaker 1: all your listeners and the readers of Patrick Durkin's article,
- 2:48Speaker 1: the outpouring of care and support has been overwhelming. So
- 2:53Speaker 1: first of all, thank you guys so much for the
- 2:56Speaker 1: opportunity to share the story. I also want to clear
- 2:59Speaker 1: up real quick. You know, in the article that I
- 3:01Speaker 1: did with Patrick, I had a number of people reach
- 3:04Speaker 1: out and say it sounds like he classified the whole
- 3:07Speaker 1: area as guilty, and of course that wasn't my intentions.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I mean, you guys have been down there. Anybody that's
- 3:15Speaker 1: followed my work knows how much I poured into try
- 3:19Speaker 1: and support that area. And I have lifelong friends that
- 3:22Speaker 1: I've made down there, and I love that area and
- 3:25Speaker 1: they're absolute salt of the earth people. What I was
- 3:29Speaker 1: talking about was a very local subculture. So when I
- 3:33Speaker 1: was talking about the culture, I was talking specifically to
- 3:36Speaker 1: my little neck of the wood, so to everybody in
- 3:39Speaker 1: southeast Missouri, Shannon County, Missouri. You know, I'm trying to
- 3:42Speaker 1: stand up against the people that have, you know, held
- 3:45Speaker 1: everybody down, held all the good people back. So it
- 3:49Speaker 1: wasn't a blanket statement. So with that out of the way,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I had game cameras up multiple game cameras, and I
- 3:57Speaker 1: even set kind of a dummy camera out where I
- 4:00Speaker 1: knew people would see it. The chip was missing from
- 4:03Speaker 1: that camera, but the arsonist did not did not find
- 4:07Speaker 1: the two cameras I had pointing at the front and
- 4:10Speaker 1: the back of the house. And they pulled the chip
- 4:12Speaker 1: from the dummy camera. They did, and they thought they
- 4:15Speaker 1: had They thought they had gotten away with it by
- 4:17Speaker 1: pulling the chip from my trap camera, and they did
- 4:20Speaker 1: not find the two cameras that I had in the woods.
- 4:23Speaker 1: So I've got the suspect on camera walking to the
- 4:26Speaker 1: house carrying a rifle and a bottle of accelerant. And
- 4:29Speaker 1: then I've got him walking away from the house carrying
- 4:32Speaker 1: just the rifle, and you can see fire coming out
- 4:34Speaker 1: of the back window. So he had broke out the
- 4:37Speaker 1: back window and and lit it from there. Um, he's
- 4:41Speaker 1: in jail now. He he showed up to his probation meeting.
- 4:46Speaker 1: This guy was in prison for for meth and firearms previously.
- 4:51Speaker 1: He's he's got about four pages of arrest records on
- 4:55Speaker 1: what we have here in Missouri called case net, where
- 4:58Speaker 1: you can look up what somebody's done in their lifetime,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and it's gonna be front page news and that local
- 5:04Speaker 1: newspaper this week coming out. Um, and it all is
- 5:09Speaker 1: tied to the poaching situation. Now, this guy's got multiple
- 5:14Speaker 1: poaching violations that he's been um arrested for in the
- 5:18Speaker 1: past on his case net. But he wasn't in the
- 5:21Speaker 1: truck that night. It was actually three women, and man,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I went all in cis on trying to figure out
- 5:28Speaker 1: who these people were and got to the shooter, who
- 5:33Speaker 1: was a girl and I'm not gonna use their names,
- 5:36Speaker 1: but it was a girl from St. Louis and then
- 5:41Speaker 1: coreries father's girlfriend. So that was the tie. Essentially, he
- 5:47Speaker 1: was going to be the hero for I guess these
- 5:50Speaker 1: women that came down the road at eight thirty at
- 5:54Speaker 1: night and and poached. But there's you know two of
- 5:58Speaker 1: the are all three now have have confessed and and
- 6:02Speaker 1: gave a swarm statement, and all three got tickets for
- 6:08Speaker 1: artificial light after dark or after hours and firearms from
- 6:13Speaker 1: a v are hunting from a vehicle. So they all
- 6:15Speaker 1: three got three tickets. And um, that's the whole, the
- 6:19Speaker 1: whole poaching story. Um, this guy's he's on a no
- 6:22Speaker 1: bond warrant right now in in jail, and if everything
- 6:26Speaker 1: goes well, he'll he's facing four different felonies and hopefully
- 6:31Speaker 1: he'll be uh reunited with his old chums in the
- 6:35Speaker 1: state pen here real soon. When you torch the dude's place,
- 6:38Speaker 1: what is that called? Well, I'm a arson Arson. I'm
- 6:43Speaker 1: really pushing and hoping that this becomes a federal case. Um.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I literally just met with the Lieutenant Governor of Missouri,
- 6:50Speaker 1: Mike Kehoe, two hours ago in the Capitol to talk
- 6:54Speaker 1: about the situation and what I've learned from law enforcement
- 6:58Speaker 1: down there. It's just a real hard place to be
- 7:01Speaker 1: a law enforcement officer. There's so much public land, it's
- 7:05Speaker 1: so remote and rural. There's there's no cell service across
- 7:08Speaker 1: most of the county. But I'm I'm trying to make
- 7:12Speaker 1: a case to the Department of Conservation and the Conservation
- 7:16Speaker 1: Commission that law enforcement doesn't need to be divided out equally.
- 7:20Speaker 1: So right now, in most cases of Missouri, we have
- 7:23Speaker 1: to uh conservation agents per county. I kind of liken
- 7:28Speaker 1: it to we have more law enforcement in urban areas
- 7:31Speaker 1: than we do in rural areas. When it comes to
- 7:33Speaker 1: city and state police. We need more law enforcement as
- 7:37Speaker 1: far as conservation and conservation agents in these rural areas
- 7:41Speaker 1: than we need and say St. Louis or Kansas City.
- 7:45Speaker 1: So hopefully there's going to be a change made that
- 7:47Speaker 1: will readdress the resources being applied to where they're most needed,
- 7:52Speaker 1: which is in some of these Southeast Missouri counties. And
- 7:56Speaker 1: then I've gotten a commitment from the Lieutenant governor to
- 7:58Speaker 1: explore a potential task force, joint task force with multiple
- 8:04Speaker 1: law enforcement agencies. And my next step is to talk
- 8:08Speaker 1: to an old senator friend of mine who is now
- 8:11Speaker 1: on the parole board to ensure that this guy's parole
- 8:14Speaker 1: is uh IS is revoked and he goes back to
- 8:18Speaker 1: prison on that as well. And then I'm I'm working
- 8:21Speaker 1: some channels to a couple of U. S congressman that
- 8:24Speaker 1: I know well who covered those counties, and we're just
- 8:27Speaker 1: making sure that this person goes away for a long
- 8:30Speaker 1: time because I have I've been reached out to in
- 8:33Speaker 1: the last twenty four hours by three other families that
- 8:36Speaker 1: have had their house burned down within five miles of
- 8:38Speaker 1: mine in the last year, and none of them had
- 8:41Speaker 1: cameras and and there's been no arrests. There's been no
- 8:45Speaker 1: arrests made, so it would only be speculation, but it
- 8:50Speaker 1: sounds pretty coincidental. Did those folks feel like, uh, those
- 8:54Speaker 1: incidences were some sort of retaliation or or or have
- 8:59Speaker 1: Did they have any idea? Do you have a cause?
- 9:02Speaker 1: One guy had to run in with a known associate
- 9:05Speaker 1: during muzzloader season last year, and then his cabin was
- 9:10Speaker 1: torched and it was his grandfather's cabin. It was handbuilt.
- 9:14Speaker 1: He didn't have any insurance on it. He lost so
- 9:16Speaker 1: many of his grandfather's possessions as well. Guy's name was
- 9:19Speaker 1: Dwayne uh Man. I've met so many strangers in the
- 9:23Speaker 1: last like forty eight hours that have you know, stories
- 9:28Speaker 1: about the same sort of things happening in other states
- 9:32Speaker 1: and across different parts of Missouri, you know. And I
- 9:35Speaker 1: told the Lieutenant governor, it's it is painful to tell
- 9:39Speaker 1: this story about a place that I came to love
- 9:41Speaker 1: so intimately. And you guys saw that when you were there,
- 9:45Speaker 1: you know, I was. I had you there because I
- 9:47Speaker 1: wanted to show you and your fan base like how
- 9:51Speaker 1: great this area is. And it's it's underserved in notoriety.
- 9:55Speaker 1: The natural resources, in the wildlife and the fish. It's
- 9:59Speaker 1: it's such a great area and there are good people there,
- 10:01Speaker 1: but everyone down there lives under the same cloud of
- 10:04Speaker 1: fear that if you if you stand up for what's right,
- 10:08Speaker 1: we're gonna burn your house down. And in my case,
- 10:11Speaker 1: I stood up for what's right and they burned my
- 10:13Speaker 1: house down. So there, you know, it's there's some reality
- 10:17Speaker 1: to it. And and it's a shame that this is
- 10:20Speaker 1: gonna cause other people to not go down there, and
- 10:22Speaker 1: it's gonna hurt the economy down there, and it's all
- 10:26Speaker 1: because of a few bad apples. Well, man, I appreciate
- 10:29Speaker 1: you coming on to catch us up on it, and when, uh,
- 10:32Speaker 1: when a couple more things shake out, um, I like
- 10:36Speaker 1: to have you back on again to to to fill
- 10:38Speaker 1: us in. And then we kind of were earlier. We
- 10:40Speaker 1: touched on what was going on on the go funding site,
- 10:43Speaker 1: which is great to see. So Brandon Butler, thanks a lot. Man.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Um as this you know, as whatever part three, you
- 10:51Speaker 1: let us know when you think it's time to come
- 10:52Speaker 1: back and and fill us in now where ship stands now,
- 10:55Speaker 1: then then now you know what I'm talking about. Yeah,
- 10:58Speaker 1: thanks again for your guys support. It's been overwhelming, So
- 11:01Speaker 1: thank you. Yeah, man, take care. Uh Okay, we got
- 11:06Speaker 1: a couple uh we're still reeling from the pandemic here.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I'm now you've had it, right, Seth, Me and Seth
- 11:14Speaker 1: have had it. We're survivors, Yanni and call you guys
- 11:17Speaker 1: have not as far as you know, I haven't had it. No, No,
- 11:21Speaker 1: have any of you guys had it? Our remote guests? Nope, nope, nope.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Can you guys introduce yourselves? Do go ahead first, because
- 11:30Speaker 1: you're on the left of my screen. Yeah, why not
- 11:36Speaker 1: say what you do all that kind of stuff? Okay, Yeah,
- 11:40Speaker 1: my name is Duke Waste Unique Customer Service wrap over
- 11:43Speaker 1: here at First Light. Yeah. Answer phone calls eight hours
- 11:48Speaker 1: a day, five days a week. So I got a
- 11:51Speaker 1: big old meal here this year. That was nice. Yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 1: if we had a time, I'd like to I'd like
- 11:57Speaker 1: to add. I was talking to Josh Prestine moreing about this.
- 12:01Speaker 1: They're like, it is quite amazing that you can call
- 12:05Speaker 1: first Light. It's just regular old Joe Hunter. You got
- 12:08Speaker 1: some questions about gear and a dude, the Hunts. I
- 12:13Speaker 1: don't even you never gave me an actual number, Duke,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but I'm gonna go ahead and throw it out, like
- 12:17Speaker 1: two hundred days a year for mule Deer, maybe two fifty.
- 12:20Speaker 1: That's include scouting, looking and all that. Am I right? Am?
- 12:23Speaker 1: I approximately right now? But you still have a job, right.
- 12:26Speaker 1: What the hell's your guys vacation policy? Man? Well, that's
- 12:29Speaker 1: just the thing, man, Like your guys end of this business.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Get better vacation than these aren't full days. Like just
- 12:36Speaker 1: like as in skiing, if you go out and take
- 12:37Speaker 1: a couple of runs, accounts as a day of scheme.
- 12:40Speaker 1: So when he makes a quick jaunt, you know, three
- 12:43Speaker 1: miles into the woods in the morning, just look at
- 12:45Speaker 1: a deer for fifteen minutes and it makes it back
- 12:47Speaker 1: to work by eight. That counts kill. Let me let
- 12:50Speaker 1: me ask you. I got a couple of things we
- 12:51Speaker 1: gotta do. Dude, I don't want to go into too
- 12:54Speaker 1: great a detail. You got a nice deer this year,
- 12:57Speaker 1: really talked about where or anything. Had you ever seen
- 12:59Speaker 1: that deer before you got it? Yeah, quite a few times.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I actually missed that thing twice, so uh the year before.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Oh I see, I knew it quite well. Now real quick,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I want to finish my thought. The point of it
- 13:14Speaker 1: being that you can just like you're gonna get customer
- 13:18Speaker 1: service from a dude that is just like an absolute
- 13:22Speaker 1: back country, mule deer, professional expert, whatever you want to
- 13:28Speaker 1: call it. You're not just like getting just some rando
- 13:32Speaker 1: that just learned the First Light line recently, and it
- 13:34Speaker 1: is gonna recommend you know that you use the middle
- 13:38Speaker 1: of the road base layer because you know it should
- 13:41Speaker 1: work for all things. Like Duke's gonna really dive in
- 13:44Speaker 1: and just give you a top level service from a
- 13:47Speaker 1: lot of experience, give you the straight dope from a
- 13:49Speaker 1: real person. Yeah, I just I don't know. I can't
- 13:51Speaker 1: get over it. I mean, how many other companies can
- 13:53Speaker 1: say that they have someone with that kind of experience
- 13:56Speaker 1: and success doing customer service for him? Do did you
- 14:00Speaker 1: know this? Uh? Never mind. I was gonna quiz you
- 14:02Speaker 1: on something that's in the news, but that's not fair. Okay,
- 14:06Speaker 1: Phil changed my screen around Chase Chase. Now it's not
- 14:10Speaker 1: left right anymore. Now it's like you guys are like,
- 14:12Speaker 1: I don't know what you call that? Just different, Chase,
- 14:15Speaker 1: Go ahead, what do you do, Chase Millman? I run
- 14:18Speaker 1: operations for First Light Meet or fhf UM. And I
- 14:23Speaker 1: think it's worth noting that from Duke's introduction that Cal
- 14:27Speaker 1: thought his name was Buck for half the trip, let's
- 14:30Speaker 1: get that out on the open, which if you know
- 14:32Speaker 1: the Monkey Ranch Gang like it's it's a great little crossover,
- 14:35Speaker 1: I feel. Yeah. I'll point out these guys are on
- 14:38Speaker 1: and joining us remotely, they're all down and catch them
- 14:40Speaker 1: where First Light is based because they're just coming back
- 14:43Speaker 1: from So seth, Yanni cal Duke, you just met Chase,
- 14:50Speaker 1: who you're meeting Matt who you haven't met yet or
- 14:53Speaker 1: all just returning from the the Sonora accused your trip
- 14:59Speaker 1: that I was unable to oh because I had been Uh,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I was afflicted. So what else you gotta say for yourself, Chase?
- 15:09Speaker 1: Not a whole lot. That's about. That's about all there
- 15:12Speaker 1: is to say about me on the on the work side,
- 15:14Speaker 1: got uh you got like a wife girlfriend. I did
- 15:18Speaker 1: not have a wife girlfriend. We'll hook you up, man,
- 15:22Speaker 1: I do have a girlfriend. Oh, I haven't hooked me
- 15:25Speaker 1: up in a long time. Man, I'm kind of itching
- 15:27Speaker 1: to hook somebody up. Okay. And then Matt, my name
- 15:31Speaker 1: is Matt de Roger's. I'm the line manager for De
- 15:36Speaker 1: Roger's something Matt d I answered all of them now,
- 15:40Speaker 1: but I managed Western Big Game product line at First Sight.
- 15:45Speaker 1: All right, Okay, we gotta take care of a couple
- 15:48Speaker 1: of things. What I wanted to share with you guys,
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yanni and Seth, do you know that you know on
- 15:52Speaker 1: the past episode when we had Luke Combs and dan
- 15:56Speaker 1: Isabel on ye yes, and they were just releasing that
- 16:01Speaker 1: tune that they played for us. I think we even
- 16:04Speaker 1: had them playing that tune on Instagram or something. We
- 16:09Speaker 1: definitely recorded better together. Yeah, Kylie just told me it
- 16:14Speaker 1: just hit number one. So I sent Luke and dan
- 16:18Speaker 1: attacks yesterday like saying how uh, congratulating him and saying
- 16:25Speaker 1: how I had such proximity to that to them their
- 16:30Speaker 1: process of writing the song that I felt a little
- 16:33Speaker 1: bit like I had written it. And dan Isbel wrote
- 16:39Speaker 1: back and said, that's in keeping with you being a
- 16:42Speaker 1: hunting TV host and that you always take credit for
- 16:45Speaker 1: ship you did not do h hurt, which hurt man.
- 16:53Speaker 1: It's all he's hitting a little close to home of
- 16:55Speaker 1: that ship. Man. Yeah, he's pretty sharp that I think he.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I think he might. I think maybe all of our
- 17:03Speaker 1: talk about everybody likes to ask, you know, if it's
- 17:07Speaker 1: so much harder um hunting with a crew, and I
- 17:14Speaker 1: would point out that we scare more, but we spot
- 17:16Speaker 1: a hell of a lot more. You know, it's a
- 17:17Speaker 1: lot more eyeballs looking around. Um, so, cal do you
- 17:23Speaker 1: know what's up with that? I wanted to tell people
- 17:24Speaker 1: about this Oklahoma deal. Yeah, I mean it's like kind
- 17:28Speaker 1: of like but this is a real politician. There is
- 17:32Speaker 1: a real life politician, like elected to office who I
- 17:38Speaker 1: can only imagine is acting on behalf of a very
- 17:42Speaker 1: very niche part of his constituency. And he's introduced a
- 17:47Speaker 1: bill to get the Oklahoma Fish and Wildlife to institute
- 17:54Speaker 1: a legal bigfoot hunting season. Yeah. Now if he's been
- 18:01Speaker 1: pressured by a constituent, we hear from this constituent. Because
- 18:04Speaker 1: people don't realize Oklahoma is a real sleeper bigfoot locale.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Oh I did not know that. I don't know that.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Everybody's always thinking it's like Oregon, Washington, Michigan, Peninsula, Pacific Northwest,
- 18:18Speaker 1: you know, and I'm naming like wildly different places. But
- 18:20Speaker 1: but no, but they all have something in common common.
- 18:23Speaker 1: It's kind of like that northern thick some wet, wet dank, yeah,
- 18:28Speaker 1: bigfoot country. So I'm sure the serious big foot hunters
- 18:34Speaker 1: are like many hunters thinking when it a specified season
- 18:39Speaker 1: opens up it's not to protect the resource. It's going
- 18:44Speaker 1: to exploit the resource even more because new regulations off
- 18:48Speaker 1: and draw a lot of new eyeballs. Right, So I'm
- 18:51Speaker 1: sure the resident big foot hunters in Oklahoma are really
- 18:55Speaker 1: shaking their heads that the spotlights being put on that. Yeah,
- 18:58Speaker 1: it's like a spot burn, Yeah, Oklahoma spot burn on
- 19:01Speaker 1: bigfoot hunting. The dude the Oklahoma that wrote us a
- 19:04Speaker 1: lot of nasty letters. Do you remember when we had
- 19:08Speaker 1: remember Laura was it Crats Crantz. She did this whole
- 19:13Speaker 1: podcast on like bigfoot people, and we had her on
- 19:16Speaker 1: to talk about bigfoot people and it got this Oklahoma
- 19:20Speaker 1: dude super fired up, and it wrote us a bunch
- 19:23Speaker 1: of letters. And he's a bigfoot person and they hunt
- 19:26Speaker 1: bigfoot's and he wrote in letters about them shooting guns
- 19:32Speaker 1: at things they heard off in the woods and whatnot
- 19:34Speaker 1: at night. But they haven't gotten one yet, and he
- 19:38Speaker 1: wants to be able to kill it so he can
- 19:41Speaker 1: be like for that your pipe and smoking. He wants
- 19:45Speaker 1: a dead one. But I think, hey, they want to
- 19:48Speaker 1: not get in trouble when they get one or have
- 19:53Speaker 1: anybody take it from him. Yeah, I'm hoping that if
- 19:56Speaker 1: there is a season. Then there will also be a
- 19:59Speaker 1: lice or a tag that's part of the bill that's
- 20:03Speaker 1: uh covered in section one. In fact, does it have
- 20:06Speaker 1: a price, I believe the price would be set by
- 20:10Speaker 1: Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission, but it does say a season
- 20:17Speaker 1: and license. I'm hoping it could just be like a
- 20:22Speaker 1: boon to the department, as in some extra revenue. But
- 20:25Speaker 1: I also don't want it to promote more of what
- 20:28Speaker 1: you just described, shooting that stuff, running off through the
- 20:30Speaker 1: woods at night, shooting, shooting it sounds in the night. Well, yeah,
- 20:37Speaker 1: because what it was he like the minute I saw
- 20:39Speaker 1: I had two legs and was standing up right, I
- 20:41Speaker 1: started shooting two years ago. Was the state of Michigan.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Somebody hit somebody that he was Oh that was Montana. Yeah.
- 20:51Speaker 1: The guy put a big foot suit on, jumped out
- 20:54Speaker 1: on the road to spook someone and got hit and killed.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Hopefully would have thought he had like a real Harry
- 21:01Speaker 1: in the Henderson's moment. Man, keep imagine like that poor guy.
- 21:04Speaker 1: We should find that person, get him on the show.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Hopefully the season is closed during Halloween mm hmmm and
- 21:10Speaker 1: any other hunting season. Yeah, it's the world coming to um.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I want it out real quick. What's this feller's name again? Murtz?
- 21:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I have his letter right here, right now.
- 21:25Speaker 1: It is John Murtz, John or you found it? What? Okay?
- 21:31Speaker 1: My wife's sending a picture of the letter. Now. Why
- 21:35Speaker 1: do you think that the spearing decoy that John Murtz
- 21:40Speaker 1: made for you is somehow superior to my spearing decoy
- 21:43Speaker 1: that he made for me? Well, in my very minimal
- 21:51Speaker 1: dark house spearing uh experience, I've had great luck with
- 21:58Speaker 1: red and white in mine because of the Latvian colors.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Matvian flag colors came red and white, and it's just like,
- 22:07Speaker 1: you know, like you were a catch fish on like
- 22:09Speaker 1: the red devil spoon. Yeah, Like it's that color combinations
- 22:13Speaker 1: of There's a very popular surf casting rattle plug surface
- 22:18Speaker 1: thing that's classically red and white. That's right, red head,
- 22:22Speaker 1: white body. You can't think of the name of it.
- 22:24Speaker 1: But I think that mine is this color. To see,
- 22:27Speaker 1: they were all customized. Cal He sent cal one that
- 22:30Speaker 1: has a mustache. It's a cute little bust. It's like
- 22:34Speaker 1: a sand Juan worm mustache glued on to the front.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I think mine. I didn't. I never made up if
- 22:40Speaker 1: it ain't shark truce. It ain't no use. But I
- 22:41Speaker 1: think maybe I was like quoting it and he heard
- 22:44Speaker 1: me say that. Even though it's not my saying, I
- 22:48Speaker 1: believe it's you know, I buy it, but I didn't
- 22:52Speaker 1: come up with it. But I'm gonna I'm gonna use
- 22:57Speaker 1: this thing this weekend. And I just head Travis Barton,
- 23:01Speaker 1: the fancy fireman welder uh who normally welds like stuff
- 23:08Speaker 1: for nice houses, handrail and stuff. But I keep telling
- 23:11Speaker 1: him that's bad for his soul and he needs to
- 23:14Speaker 1: do like weird hunting and fishing welding projects to keep
- 23:18Speaker 1: him like in touch with his true self. How does
- 23:22Speaker 1: he feel about that? He believes me that it's true
- 23:24Speaker 1: because he just made us to Pike spears chase over
- 23:28Speaker 1: at first, like he's going all the way to come
- 23:30Speaker 1: chodka to fish for steelhead and ensure that he can
- 23:35Speaker 1: go all the way across the world and have a
- 23:38Speaker 1: successful trip. I'm gonna paint him up some sharp truce
- 23:42Speaker 1: beads to guarantee some fishing successful. That's nice when I
- 23:47Speaker 1: call those bees are aren't making the trip? Cal? Oh well,
- 23:53Speaker 1: Cal made you a special beat and you're not. And
- 23:54Speaker 1: you're not gonna bring it with you. What's the deal, Chase.
- 23:57Speaker 1: You need a little you need a little background here.
- 24:00Speaker 1: There's like he's going to catch these steelhead right that
- 24:05Speaker 1: only live there. It's like this, it's like this steelhead
- 24:09Speaker 1: trip of all steel head trips to go over to
- 24:12Speaker 1: far East um Russia and fish to come Chodka. And
- 24:18Speaker 1: he is going to stick to like some purist type
- 24:22Speaker 1: techniques and would rather only catch twenty with purist techniques
- 24:27Speaker 1: than a hundred by fishing of plastic bead And it's
- 24:32Speaker 1: a research trip where every fish is uh you know,
- 24:37Speaker 1: wade survey and scales taken, a tagged and released. Um.
- 24:45Speaker 1: So it really if he fished to beat a little bit,
- 24:49Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Like, if that was the case,
- 24:50Speaker 1: to go and catch a whole ship pile of him, right,
- 24:53Speaker 1: I mean he can sit and catch him and be selfish,
- 24:56Speaker 1: you know, but he's going to come Chota for research.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I don't want to do the species of disservice by
- 25:03Speaker 1: not fishing your beads. But there is a certain amount
- 25:06Speaker 1: of recreation that's involved in this trip as well. It's
- 25:09Speaker 1: it's it smells a little bit like that. Back to
- 25:14Speaker 1: the oh. When I called, um, Travis Barton, what's the
- 25:19Speaker 1: name of his what does he work under? Barton Fabrication.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Barton Fabrication, Dude, the spears like a work of art.
- 25:29Speaker 1: When I called him and said like, hey, uh, and
- 25:32Speaker 1: I asked about his familiarity with pike spears, he pointed
- 25:34Speaker 1: out that he grew up in Minnesota and when you
- 25:38Speaker 1: were in metal shop, all anybody made spears, pike speers, pikes.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Beer making has change right now people use those like
- 25:47Speaker 1: uh CNC, you just cut it out of plate steel.
- 25:52Speaker 1: You don't like sharpen up barbs and well the whole
- 25:55Speaker 1: thing together. It's like a freaking handle. And then you
- 25:58Speaker 1: get a piece of like ten inch by sixteen inch
- 26:00Speaker 1: plate steel and cut the whole Is that how he
- 26:03Speaker 1: did it? Yeah, he has the scene C machine, Dude,
- 26:06Speaker 1: it's like a gorgeous gorgeous Did you give him like
- 26:11Speaker 1: specs to work off of or did he find him
- 26:13Speaker 1: on the internet or I sent him a photo of
- 26:15Speaker 1: my body's spear that he likes a lot, and I
- 26:18Speaker 1: sent him the sort of recipe. But when I've done that,
- 26:21Speaker 1: he had already been online researching it and then didn't
- 26:23Speaker 1: use the didn't use the design I sent him. He
- 26:26Speaker 1: used the design that it was very similar, but uh
- 26:31Speaker 1: and he even put like a little decorative twist and
- 26:33Speaker 1: what it's like, it's a freaking gorgeous spirit. You know
- 26:35Speaker 1: that guy. He likes to run the hashtag built not Bought.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Travis does. Yeah, like without trying to be he's very
- 26:44Speaker 1: much like at the forefront of a like a movement
- 26:48Speaker 1: in across our country and maybe the rest of the world,
- 26:52Speaker 1: like a very green movement to like limit you know,
- 26:56Speaker 1: big manufacturing. You know, people just like make and stuff
- 27:00Speaker 1: at home with what they have. Um, he embodies that
- 27:05Speaker 1: without Actually he's certainly not doesn't think of himself as
- 27:08Speaker 1: at the forefront of some green movement. You know. No,
- 27:12Speaker 1: I didn't know built not bought. Yeah, that's good stuff, man.
- 27:14Speaker 1: It is ties in well with what's going on on
- 27:16Speaker 1: Yannie side of the street. Whereas brand new appliances or
- 27:21Speaker 1: crap in the bed, Yeah, I don't. I don't think
- 27:25Speaker 1: it's can tell you how to athlete, tell you that
- 27:29Speaker 1: came to fix my Samsung, Raine said, the one company
- 27:33Speaker 1: what I told you not to buy from Samsung? Like, okay, really,
- 27:37Speaker 1: you got some dud appliances from Samsung just one um,
- 27:41Speaker 1: but he in general, he was just telling me that
- 27:46Speaker 1: from what he sees, there's very much a planned um
- 27:54Speaker 1: and um. He's just like if I if you don't
- 27:57Speaker 1: have it, He's like, I recommend right now you go
- 27:59Speaker 1: online and get yourself an extended warranty because like you
- 28:02Speaker 1: know how every appliance now has like a digital display
- 28:06Speaker 1: of some sort. And he's like, on an oven, it
- 28:07Speaker 1: is literally right above the part where the heat is
- 28:10Speaker 1: escaping the most. Well, guess yeah, it gets cooked. He's like,
- 28:14Speaker 1: so these I replace these boards all the time, two
- 28:17Speaker 1: to three years into the appliance, and it doesn't matter
- 28:19Speaker 1: if you spent eight dollars on your range or five thousand.
- 28:23Speaker 1: That thing is going. So that's the appliance you had.
- 28:27Speaker 1: That's bad And yeah, yeah, well and that wasn't what
- 28:32Speaker 1: went bad on us. For us, it was the based
- 28:35Speaker 1: the the element that heats up the oven, that like
- 28:41Speaker 1: starts the heating process. But that's what's gonna happen next.
- 28:45Speaker 1: May I feel terrible you get screwed over by those guys.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I used toe rice to run their phones for a while.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I had to sing called Samsung White Glove Service. Remember
- 28:53Speaker 1: that I do. It's like it was like for celebrities,
- 28:59Speaker 1: but apparently they made it down to like D list
- 29:01Speaker 1: celebrities in their celebrity list because I was I got
- 29:04Speaker 1: white glove service, which is pretty nice, but then I
- 29:06Speaker 1: gave up on them all together. Dude to New York,
- 29:11Speaker 1: I kind of want to talk about this. It's a
- 29:13Speaker 1: good one. Oh, let's first talk about this. So some
- 29:18Speaker 1: guy in Idaho cal Yes, sir, do you know about
- 29:23Speaker 1: this that you're talking? Poetrs? Now? Yeah, tell everybody about
- 29:27Speaker 1: this just because you got you got. I don't used
- 29:31Speaker 1: to live there, are you? First light fellas familiar with
- 29:37Speaker 1: the big Idaho Uh poetry that just got busted? Here
- 29:42Speaker 1: the the guy that killed the mountain goat nanny with
- 29:46Speaker 1: a bunch of practice practice bolts from a crossbow. No,
- 29:50Speaker 1: but Chase, this is up in year old neck of
- 29:52Speaker 1: the woods. Uh. Guy shot sorry, I shouldn't say a guy,
- 29:59Speaker 1: a suspect shot a mountain goat with To me, it
- 30:05Speaker 1: looks like a like probably not a hunting style crossbow,
- 30:10Speaker 1: but the bolts, which are the short little arrows that
- 30:13Speaker 1: people fling out across bows. Um, we're stuck in this
- 30:18Speaker 1: mountain goat. This nanny female mountain goat and they're they're
- 30:22Speaker 1: not hunting set up at all. Their their target bolts.
- 30:27Speaker 1: So no, uh made for targets, not for effectively and
- 30:32Speaker 1: and humanely. You would call it killing something. And Idaho
- 30:37Speaker 1: fishing game was forced to youth and eyes the nanny
- 30:43Speaker 1: mountain goat. And they haven't caught the dude. They have
- 30:50Speaker 1: not caught the person. So if you know someone here,
- 30:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna figure out how to solve this. If you
- 30:55Speaker 1: know someone with a crossbow, they like to call them
- 31:04Speaker 1: like instead of have it like if you're like crossbow enthusiasts,
- 31:07Speaker 1: they like to have it be that there's horizontal bows
- 31:11Speaker 1: and vertical bows, if you know, and that's a if
- 31:15Speaker 1: you know a vertical bow enthusiast and you knew they
- 31:19Speaker 1: had some practice bolts and then were horizontal horizontal bones.
- 31:25Speaker 1: If you know a horizontal bow enthusiast who had some
- 31:28Speaker 1: practice bolts and then one day you noticed that he
- 31:31Speaker 1: had three fewer practice bolts than he had previous, you
- 31:38Speaker 1: might have a clue. Yeah, shiny gold boot, there's no
- 32:00Speaker 1: one call I feel like you know about. I think
- 32:04Speaker 1: this is an interesting one. A guy in New York
- 32:09Speaker 1: I feel bad for this guy, kind of a guy
- 32:10Speaker 1: in New York is barbecuing up a barbecueing up a canine,
- 32:18Speaker 1: and apparently the some version of the police show up
- 32:26Speaker 1: and and uh confiscate a hunk of his whole canine
- 32:33Speaker 1: that he's grilling up to send it off to Cornell
- 32:36Speaker 1: to find out if he is cooking, as he says,
- 32:40Speaker 1: a coyote or, as neighbors suspect, a dog. It is
- 32:46Speaker 1: illegal to cook a domestic dog. However, the state of
- 32:51Speaker 1: New York says it it is legal to having at
- 32:55Speaker 1: least having your possession or do what you want with
- 32:58Speaker 1: a coyote, carcass, hyder pelt. You actually found this out
- 33:02Speaker 1: that it is illegal as a cookoo domestic dog. I
- 33:05Speaker 1: tell you a lot more I know about this than
- 33:08Speaker 1: that falls under the like domestic animal or animal abuse.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Im i'm missing missing too, mixing two abuses up there.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Uh yes, animal abuse. Now when I here's something that happened,
- 33:22Speaker 1: I thought that that. Ah, I'll share a million years
- 33:29Speaker 1: ago when I was writing a story for Outside about
- 33:34Speaker 1: animal cruelty. Sorry, that's what the word I was going
- 33:37Speaker 1: for animal cruelty. Million years ago and I was writing
- 33:40Speaker 1: a story for Outside about the consumption of dogs in Vietnam.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I had a line in my in the draft of
- 33:50Speaker 1: my article that I submitted where I had some line
- 33:54Speaker 1: like to the effect of, you know, everybody knows it's
- 33:57Speaker 1: illegal to eat a dog in America. And the fact
- 34:00Speaker 1: checker kept pointing out that where are you show me
- 34:08Speaker 1: that it's illegal to eat a dog in America? And
- 34:14Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I just assumed. I don't know. I
- 34:16Speaker 1: didn't actually find that somewhere. I was just young and
- 34:19Speaker 1: stupid at the time, and younger stupider, and then once
- 34:26Speaker 1: I had to actually look into it, it's it's illegal
- 34:28Speaker 1: in California, it's illegal in New York. Well then that
- 34:32Speaker 1: there's no there's not a prohibition I eat your dog.
- 34:35Speaker 1: You could eat your dog right now. The area it
- 34:39Speaker 1: falls into is like, is consuming a dog necessarily rolled
- 34:42Speaker 1: into animal cruelty? But like if your own dog, whatever,
- 34:46Speaker 1: got if you ran over your own dog in your driveway,
- 34:49Speaker 1: there's nothing saying you can't consume that dog. Yeah, there's probably.
- 34:53Speaker 1: I don't think there's any rule against euthanizing your own dog, right,
- 34:58Speaker 1: So no, um, what this One of the things that's
- 35:02Speaker 1: brought up is it was like, why is it, Uh,
- 35:06Speaker 1: why is it not possible to buy dog meat in America?
- 35:10Speaker 1: And when I was doing working on this article and
- 35:13Speaker 1: I want up talking to some U. S d A
- 35:16Speaker 1: inspectors and stuff, and it was like, you're just never
- 35:18Speaker 1: going to get Um, you're just not going to get
- 35:22Speaker 1: an inspected facility. You're not gonna get like the U.
- 35:25Speaker 1: S d A. You're you're not gonna get them to
- 35:27Speaker 1: come inspect um and certify that product. Right, So that
- 35:34Speaker 1: would be what would block someone from trafficking and dog flesh,
- 35:40Speaker 1: But it wouldn't be any kind of in most states,
- 35:42Speaker 1: it would be kind of any kind of other prohibition,
- 35:45Speaker 1: Like there's nothing says you can't do it. It's just
- 35:47Speaker 1: no one's ever gotten set up to do it. So
- 35:51Speaker 1: this dude, he says, he's have you seen there's no pictures.
- 35:55Speaker 1: I speaking, I'd like to have this guy in the show, Um,
- 36:00Speaker 1: have you seen any pictures? They searched around to see
- 36:02Speaker 1: if and had reported a dog missing that fit the
- 36:05Speaker 1: sort of stature and girth of this dog, which I
- 36:10Speaker 1: thought was grant. They couldn't turn up any reports of
- 36:15Speaker 1: people searching for a a canine in the area that
- 36:19Speaker 1: that fit this general make and model if you will. Yeah,
- 36:23Speaker 1: like he was kind of cooked, but I don't know.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I'd like, I thought this was something interesting to bring
- 36:31Speaker 1: up because the kyo the only coyote I was, Um,
- 36:36Speaker 1: it was while we were hunting CU's deer in Mexico
- 36:38Speaker 1: and you guys just got back from hunting cuse dear
- 36:39Speaker 1: Mexico's every transition. I'll tell you one thing about that
- 36:44Speaker 1: transition is it's premature because because I'm not ready yet,
- 36:52Speaker 1: So I couldn't figure out if the guy got his
- 36:54Speaker 1: meat back or if how much did they how much
- 36:58Speaker 1: they confiscated to me? I I the couple of articles
- 37:02Speaker 1: I read, it sounded to me like they took the
- 37:05Speaker 1: entire well, they took his whole thing meal, which would
- 37:09Speaker 1: make sense. How does that mean you can't do that
- 37:11Speaker 1: to somebody? Well, yeah, imagine somebody comes up and takes
- 37:15Speaker 1: the rack or ribs off your barbecue and they're like, listen,
- 37:20Speaker 1: these may or may not be so we'll get back
- 37:25Speaker 1: to you. I wouldn't be real happy about that. No.
- 37:28Speaker 1: I like how the article points out, like now that
- 37:30Speaker 1: a journalists will include like a detail that is like
- 37:34Speaker 1: a telling detail, and you could tell that they it's
- 37:38Speaker 1: very important to the person covering this that it was
- 37:42Speaker 1: a makeshift grill. Yeah, I read that. Jo. It's like
- 37:47Speaker 1: like there, there's sort of there there, there's saying something there.
- 37:52Speaker 1: I think the journalist and this fellow's neighbors are probably
- 37:56Speaker 1: on the same page. They're like, there's more than likely
- 37:59Speaker 1: nothing going on here. But for some reason, I don't
- 38:03Speaker 1: like this person. Yeah, and I'll know that it seemed
- 38:06Speaker 1: to me to be a makeshift grill, not like a
- 38:11Speaker 1: super nice grill. M hm. Weird dude cooking some weird
- 38:17Speaker 1: ass meat, some makeshift grill. It really paints a picture.
- 38:20Speaker 1: It's like incriminating. Yeah. And he's using the hashtag caught
- 38:24Speaker 1: not bought and what was the other one, Johnnie the
- 38:29Speaker 1: made it not built, built not bought, caught bots doing
- 38:35Speaker 1: a little cott not bought, built, not bought. At the
- 38:39Speaker 1: same time, the neighbors couldn't stand who does he think
- 38:44Speaker 1: he is? He's he's mixing up off his hashtags. Man,
- 38:50Speaker 1: there's a hashtag. I want to get into count if
- 38:52Speaker 1: we feel like getting into it right now. You tell
- 38:54Speaker 1: me if we wait or not. There's one more thing
- 38:57Speaker 1: I want to talk about, Big Giant Colin's Oh that
- 39:01Speaker 1: guy that got his uh testicle torn out of his
- 39:03Speaker 1: scroll them. We'll talk about that at another one. I
- 39:07Speaker 1: didn't hear that one, so horse riding story. But I
- 39:13Speaker 1: do want a quick touch on this colon deal. Um.
- 39:17Speaker 1: And do we want to talk about the hashtag that
- 39:21Speaker 1: was brought up in conversation around who the woman that
- 39:29Speaker 1: president now President Biden has put forth as his nominee
- 39:37Speaker 1: for the Interior secretary. Oh the not specifically about her,
- 39:46Speaker 1: but about the movement that could be a big talking point. Yeah,
- 39:50Speaker 1: do you want to get into that an hour later?
- 39:52Speaker 1: I think it's a it's a fascinating topic. Um, we
- 39:55Speaker 1: may as well kick it off. It's not because what
- 39:59Speaker 1: we should do is do it real later. Yeah, yeah, okay,
- 40:03Speaker 1: tell everybody just just the vagaries. So um are it's
- 40:12Speaker 1: an appointed position. She hasn't been um confirmed confirmed yet,
- 40:18Speaker 1: thank you. Deb Holland, who's out of New Mexico. She's
- 40:23Speaker 1: from a publo in New Mexico. Yeah. On her bio
- 40:27Speaker 1: it says thirty fifth generation New Mexican, which I think
- 40:30Speaker 1: is is cooler than hell. Um, hard to calculate. Hard
- 40:35Speaker 1: to calculate for sure, but you know, around Montana, it's
- 40:39Speaker 1: like you you opened conversations. Generation. Oh yeah, fifth generation. Yeah,
- 40:45Speaker 1: you know what I mean. He was just telling somebody.
- 40:48Speaker 1: You know, it's like, oh, yeah, nephew for Christmas. My
- 40:52Speaker 1: sister Courtney popped out or a niece for Christmas, and uh,
- 40:57Speaker 1: you know it's your sister popped out. Yes, yeah, oh
- 41:04Speaker 1: my god. You know, like, but you thought it was
- 41:07Speaker 1: your nephew. Well, the nephew was present, but you know,
- 41:15Speaker 1: it's like fifth or sixth generation, and which was she like,
- 41:18Speaker 1: I'm I'm pregnant with Cal's niece. They held off on
- 41:24Speaker 1: identifying the sex. Yeah did it old fashioned? Yeah? And
- 41:29Speaker 1: you and yeah, I'll be the first to tell everyone that. Uh,
- 41:33Speaker 1: my sister does a very very consistent and good job
- 41:38Speaker 1: of of working the Catholic guilt on roping me in
- 41:41Speaker 1: more firmly into family affairs. And I keep saying, we'll
- 41:45Speaker 1: wait till they get older, and I'll give him a
- 41:47Speaker 1: bunch of stuff and we'll be able to go do things,
- 41:50Speaker 1: which I think and she thinks you should get started earlier. Yeah,
- 41:53Speaker 1: but I I don't know really how to do that.
- 41:56Speaker 1: We're not no. I one time when we took a
- 42:01Speaker 1: little nephew of yours fishing Yeah. So that's that's Courtney's son,
- 42:05Speaker 1: my nephew, and so that sister had a daughter. Yeah
- 42:11Speaker 1: you were like I thought you were like full fledged
- 42:13Speaker 1: uncl ng Yeah, thank you. It's years ago. You've seen
- 42:17Speaker 1: him since it's intermittent. Yes, I have moving on. Uh
- 42:24Speaker 1: So anyway, UM hashtag is land back, which is the
- 42:33Speaker 1: land back movement? Right, and there's conversations and this has
- 42:37Speaker 1: been going. We gotta be clear about, right did it
- 42:41Speaker 1: go on? If you don't clarify the point, I'll make
- 42:43Speaker 1: sure to clarify. The point is it's give the land
- 42:47Speaker 1: back to the natives, which would be the inhabitants of
- 42:52Speaker 1: in our case, North America, within the the United States
- 42:57Speaker 1: prior to European uh, Europeans setting foot on the soil
- 43:02Speaker 1: and and spreading disease and claiming big chunks at other
- 43:05Speaker 1: people's property for ourselves. UM. Fascinating subject. It is a quagmire. Um,
- 43:13Speaker 1: unless you think that all Native Americans were on the
- 43:17Speaker 1: same same team, same page, and they all know like
- 43:21Speaker 1: identifying who occupied what at what time, what at what time?
- 43:26Speaker 1: Because later like you know that that um, you know,
- 43:31Speaker 1: the sue had displaced a group from the Black Hills
- 43:34Speaker 1: and presumably they had displaced another group for the Black Hills.
- 43:37Speaker 1: And oh yeah, and and yeah, just like the mixing
- 43:42Speaker 1: of races, religions and and who's leading who. I was
- 43:48Speaker 1: just reading a great book that old Martin Heinrich told
- 43:51Speaker 1: me to look up, which is Lost City of the
- 43:53Speaker 1: Monkey God. And they in a relatively small area, the
- 44:00Speaker 1: the Empires that rose and fell in a in a
- 44:02Speaker 1: pretty small area in a pretty small amount of time. Yeah,
- 44:05Speaker 1: when we were caribou hunting, he told me about that boat. Yeah,
- 44:08Speaker 1: pretty pretty neat. Um. So yeah, land back would would
- 44:11Speaker 1: be the hashtag and it's it's a really interesting one.
- 44:14Speaker 1: And um, it's it's gonna be coming up a lot.
- 44:17Speaker 1: I guess, yes, it's going to be coming up. And
- 44:21Speaker 1: presumably the land back is not coming from the private sector.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Presumably it would come from public land. It would be
- 44:30Speaker 1: coming from public land. Yeah, that's the pieces that are
- 44:33Speaker 1: most like obvious. The most obvious target would be that
- 44:36Speaker 1: you would do public land right, so would be federally
- 44:39Speaker 1: managed lands. Yeah, which I was. You know, I was
- 44:41Speaker 1: swapping emails with cal about this yesterday and I pointed
- 44:46Speaker 1: out that, well, one cow pointed out that it's very
- 44:48Speaker 1: awkward conversations. It's hard for a bunch of white dudes
- 44:52Speaker 1: to sit and act like we got a handle on
- 44:54Speaker 1: covering it from all angles. But I was thinking that
- 44:59Speaker 1: and I put this to kel Oh. The thing I
- 45:02Speaker 1: wanted to clarify before I even say my thing is
- 45:04Speaker 1: that it's presumptuous. It's like it's it's like if Biden's
- 45:11Speaker 1: Interior nominee um is uh, what's the word you use?
- 45:22Speaker 1: She's confirmed um it would be the first Native American
- 45:26Speaker 1: Interior secretary. Uh. And it's known that she has um
- 45:33Speaker 1: voice this perspective or it is sympathetic to this perspective.
- 45:38Speaker 1: In the lead up to this, this appointment confirmation, she
- 45:42Speaker 1: hasn't said my thing is gonna be land back. It's
- 45:46Speaker 1: just like articles I've read about her to try to
- 45:48Speaker 1: get a sense of um. As soon as the appointment
- 45:50Speaker 1: came out, like, I was very much rooting for Martin Heinrich.
- 45:55Speaker 1: That would be like the in my mind, the dream
- 45:58Speaker 1: that makes this all worthwhile, the dream Interior secretary in
- 46:03Speaker 1: my view, because Uh, I like where he's that environmentally
- 46:07Speaker 1: and he's like very friendly to hunting and fishing. When
- 46:11Speaker 1: that didn't happen, I was like who's this person? Um,
- 46:14Speaker 1: I wasn't that familiar with her, and I remember people
- 46:16Speaker 1: like like journalists speculating on what might be her priorities.
- 46:22Speaker 1: And the two of them that were that I read about,
- 46:25Speaker 1: we're both alarming to me. Would be uh, land back,
- 46:30Speaker 1: so taking public land and handing it to sovereign groups.
- 46:35Speaker 1: And that someone was speculating that moving more public lands
- 46:42Speaker 1: over into renewable energy production, so wind and solar, moving
- 46:46Speaker 1: away from not that I'm like, not that I'm excited
- 46:50Speaker 1: about drawn fossil fuels from public land, but um, definitely
- 46:56Speaker 1: not excited about turning them all into wind farms. Uh.
- 47:01Speaker 1: And so I was like, yeah, but there's no indication
- 47:06Speaker 1: from her what like, you know, there's no indication from
- 47:09Speaker 1: her that is gonna be her priority. It's just speculation,
- 47:12Speaker 1: but I think that it's gonna put. I was saying,
- 47:13Speaker 1: it's the cow that if the if the land back
- 47:16Speaker 1: movement is that it would be like, oh no, the
- 47:19Speaker 1: obvious thing that you would give back would be to
- 47:21Speaker 1: give federally managed public lands, so lands that belong to
- 47:24Speaker 1: all Americans, regardless of race, creed, religion, whatever, like they're
- 47:30Speaker 1: all of ours, we all have a say in them
- 47:32Speaker 1: that you would hand them to groups that are our
- 47:35Speaker 1: sovereign nations, two tribes that are sovereign nations not subject
- 47:39Speaker 1: to all federal things. Is gonna put organizations public land
- 47:44Speaker 1: protection organizations like b h A in a very weird position. Yes,
- 47:51Speaker 1: potentially right, How do they not? How does how would
- 47:54Speaker 1: it not become weird for them? To be consistent, they'd
- 47:57Speaker 1: have to say, no, we don't believe in the transfer
- 47:59Speaker 1: of public land. It's the private groups. Yeah, I mean correctly,
- 48:03Speaker 1: You're right, So the sovereign nations from what I see
- 48:06Speaker 1: right now. And and to be very very clear, I've
- 48:08Speaker 1: got a ton of education to do on this and
- 48:11Speaker 1: and this is um a great great way to kick started.
- 48:15Speaker 1: And uh, deb halland or Hayland, haland Hayland. Uh. If
- 48:22Speaker 1: you're listening, or somebody in your office is listening, we'd
- 48:25Speaker 1: love to have you on and get your information, your
- 48:28Speaker 1: two cents on all this stuff. But um, yeah, you
- 48:32Speaker 1: would man as a board member for b h A,
- 48:37Speaker 1: I would be anti transfer of public land or sale
- 48:42Speaker 1: of public land too a sovereign nation or sovereign entity,
- 48:48Speaker 1: just like we have been. I don't I don't know,
- 48:51Speaker 1: I just don't see a situation where we couldn't be
- 48:54Speaker 1: I could see a possibility where we you know, I
- 49:01Speaker 1: get to a point where we have much more input
- 49:04Speaker 1: from many more groups on sacred sites, sites with you know,
- 49:13Speaker 1: huge anthropology and and archaeological uh you know, importance and
- 49:24Speaker 1: and coming up with a better way to you know,
- 49:28Speaker 1: have access while protecting those areas, bringing more people to
- 49:33Speaker 1: the table, which is something that gets regurgitated all the time,
- 49:36Speaker 1: have more voices, have better conversations. Um. But that doesn't
- 49:40Speaker 1: mean it's not something we need to do. But an
- 49:44Speaker 1: outright transfer like land back, begin with like land back
- 49:48Speaker 1: to who I could see a way it would kind
- 49:53Speaker 1: of like I don't know how I feel about it yet,
- 49:55Speaker 1: right in a large measure would depend on scale, uh
- 50:04Speaker 1: you know you ever like just I'm just bringing up
- 50:06Speaker 1: in New Mexico because Hallen's from New Mexico. Like Bandolier
- 50:10Speaker 1: National Monument. Okay, so it's like an ancient Pueblo National
- 50:15Speaker 1: Monument site. Um, it's managed as a monument, right, it's
- 50:22Speaker 1: a it's geographically like to find to be sort of
- 50:26Speaker 1: you know around this monument site. It's not this It's
- 50:29Speaker 1: not like hundreds of thousands of acres, but it's this site.
- 50:33Speaker 1: I could see situations like that, like very specific, you know,
- 50:40Speaker 1: I could see where you could get a majority of
- 50:43Speaker 1: Americans on board with these like very specific sites that
- 50:48Speaker 1: had direct relevance to people that own them, significance to
- 50:53Speaker 1: people that own them, like the site of you know,
- 50:57Speaker 1: Wounded Knee, like you uh, Devil's How or whatever, like
- 51:00Speaker 1: like very specific spots that had religious significance, and that
- 51:05Speaker 1: you would hand over administration or whatever of these two
- 51:08Speaker 1: to their prior, you know, arguably rightful owners. Pompey his
- 51:12Speaker 1: pillar would be a great example right next, And I
- 51:15Speaker 1: can see that you would have one reception that that
- 51:18Speaker 1: the public Americans might might perceive that differently than say, um, Yosemite,
- 51:28Speaker 1: we're taking all of Yosemite National Park and you know,
- 51:32Speaker 1: getting it to its prior owner. Yeah, all of Hudson's
- 51:37Speaker 1: Bay or Manhattan, Manhattan exactly, We're gonna go right to
- 51:42Speaker 1: the start right road all started it was Manhattan or
- 51:46Speaker 1: Plymouth Rock and you know that state that's not gonna
- 51:51Speaker 1: go right. But Pompey is pillar a great example, right
- 51:54Speaker 1: like right now, there's uh, there's a cultural site, there's um,
- 52:00Speaker 1: you know, all sorts of infrastructure set up for education,
- 52:04Speaker 1: and I went and walked around it over Christmas and
- 52:09Speaker 1: Pheasants Forever has a bunch of ground in the monument,
- 52:15Speaker 1: and I hunted my way with the dog to the
- 52:20Speaker 1: no hunting sign, threw my shots, threw my shotgun over
- 52:24Speaker 1: the shoulder, you know, broken Eventually there's some other folks around.
- 52:28Speaker 1: I just didn't want to deal with anything, and I
- 52:29Speaker 1: was using it over and one of those weather be
- 52:31Speaker 1: over and unders. So I just broke the thing in
- 52:34Speaker 1: three parts and threw it in my backpack so it
- 52:36Speaker 1: didn't look like you were up to no good, right,
- 52:38Speaker 1: And then just you know, toward the site, read all
- 52:41Speaker 1: the signs that I wanted to see. My Grandpa's got
- 52:43Speaker 1: a rock over there. He used to do some education
- 52:46Speaker 1: tours on medicine at pump Eyes and uh. And then
- 52:51Speaker 1: snapped her back together and hunting my way back out
- 52:53Speaker 1: to the truck. And it's like, but do we have
- 52:57Speaker 1: to give up any of that? You know what I mean?
- 53:00Speaker 1: It's a very small site, you know, poppies, Pompey, pompey,
- 53:05Speaker 1: so Szaka Jewellah socaw Jeweah, Zacha Jeriah who was the
- 53:15Speaker 1: I don't know they don't think they were married. The yeah,
- 53:17Speaker 1: the the sort of the wife of a guide that
- 53:22Speaker 1: was hired by Lewis and Clark on the Lewis and
- 53:25Speaker 1: Clark expedition, and the guide wanted being like a kind
- 53:28Speaker 1: of I think he's kind of worth his reputation was
- 53:29Speaker 1: he's pretty worthless. But his wife, Zacha juillah Um, who
- 53:35Speaker 1: was with child right she was was was her child
- 53:38Speaker 1: born Pompey was born along that Lewis Clark che Charbonneau,
- 53:43Speaker 1: had a bad reputation. But his wife, who I think
- 53:46Speaker 1: was snake if I'm not if I'm not mistaken, Sacha
- 53:51Speaker 1: Jeria wanted being like very valuable. What do you mean
- 53:54Speaker 1: she was a snake? I think she was snaking? Wasn't
- 53:56Speaker 1: she She had she was had been born with snake
- 54:00Speaker 1: and then had been uh had been born Looking up
- 54:05Speaker 1: real quick. She was born snake and had been kidnapped
- 54:09Speaker 1: by another tribe and raising another tribe. But new certain
- 54:16Speaker 1: landmarks around her tribe knew what she was born. She
- 54:21Speaker 1: proved to be very valuable around some navigation and has
- 54:26Speaker 1: been celebrated ever since. Is like the only even though
- 54:29Speaker 1: she wasn't formally a member. I don't even think she
- 54:32Speaker 1: was getting paid, like her whole man was getting paid
- 54:33Speaker 1: and he was I guess worthless. But so she's been
- 54:38Speaker 1: honored ever since as being this like the only female
- 54:40Speaker 1: member and I think so like like, well, they had
- 54:42Speaker 1: a slave with him to York who wasn't paid, but
- 54:44Speaker 1: he was given as he was gifted his freedom. After
- 54:47Speaker 1: the expedition, she died in obscurity szaka Dwiah. But she
- 54:51Speaker 1: has this kid. They named the kid POMPEII. And they
- 54:55Speaker 1: got to a pillar. It this prominent pillar along the yellowstone,
- 54:58Speaker 1: like a sandstone pillar that sits there. Clark goes up
- 55:03Speaker 1: and carves his name, and that's all, and for a
- 55:05Speaker 1: long time had always been built as the only visual
- 55:08Speaker 1: marker of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Is where Clark
- 55:12Speaker 1: at us. I've went up and looked at it. You
- 55:13Speaker 1: still go up and look as a damn name from
- 55:16Speaker 1: eighteen o five or eight o six whatever is carved
- 55:18Speaker 1: net freaking rock, very nice penmanship. And he named the
- 55:23Speaker 1: rock Pompey's pillar, Pompey's Pillar, and then later interestingly Custer.
- 55:28Speaker 1: They had to shootout right below that, below that, below
- 55:33Speaker 1: that spire seven years later. Mhm uh shone or shone
- 55:41Speaker 1: e uh and from the lem High Zone. But who
- 55:50Speaker 1: was she raised by? Which show? Uh? Remember the Lemhi
- 55:55Speaker 1: band Uh the showy tribe. She was kidnapped by the
- 55:59Speaker 1: Hadatza and then sold to Charbonneau. Oh you bought her,
- 56:08Speaker 1: so she's like a slave. Yeah, you can bow that, Phil.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Did you know all this? Yeah? I I did any
- 56:19Speaker 1: most of it. I feel like most of if you
- 56:21Speaker 1: were a wife, a Native American wife, I mean you
- 56:24Speaker 1: were pretty much a slave back then, right to a
- 56:26Speaker 1: white trapper. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I don't know, man, you've
- 56:30Speaker 1: watched Jeremiah Johnson that I'm aware that's probably one of
- 56:36Speaker 1: the ones I slept through in in in middle school.
- 56:38Speaker 1: I'm sure i'd love it. Now, Steve, I'm sorry if
- 56:40Speaker 1: I offended you. Alright, we're gonna put the coal in
- 56:42Speaker 1: on hold. Cal. You don't with your little report about
- 56:44Speaker 1: who but your cal's like totally gross now oh yeah, definitely. Yeah.
- 56:50Speaker 1: I'm I'm sure we're gonna get an overwhelming load of
- 56:55Speaker 1: emails in As Steve said when we started this conversation
- 56:59Speaker 1: by email yesterday, very aware that we're a bunch of
- 57:04Speaker 1: white European man talking about this stuff, and um, very
- 57:09Speaker 1: interested and very looking forward to seeing how these conversations
- 57:14Speaker 1: evolve on the land back movement. Yeah, we just gotta
- 57:18Speaker 1: get the right people to talk about it with us,
- 57:21Speaker 1: because I want to and I want to not talk
- 57:22Speaker 1: about it. But on the other hand, you know, you
- 57:24Speaker 1: don't be like, I'll tell you what these people ought
- 57:27Speaker 1: to think. We're acknowledging it exists, and we're acknowledging that
- 57:30Speaker 1: we need more info. Crain will find us the right
- 57:32Speaker 1: people to talk about all right, now, Old Mexico. Now,
- 57:38Speaker 1: I missed out on the trip because I was afflicted
- 57:44Speaker 1: with with covid C one niner, which which I got
- 57:48Speaker 1: lucky and it didn't do anything bad to me. But um,
- 57:53Speaker 1: how was it? Man? Was it like the greatest thing
- 57:55Speaker 1: in the world that generally is the hunting highlight of
- 57:59Speaker 1: my year? I saw that you said that in an
- 58:01Speaker 1: email to one of these fellas, and the deadn't surprise
- 58:05Speaker 1: you did it? Mhm, Partially, I guess. I mean, I
- 58:12Speaker 1: know that it's like, I know that it's like top tier,
- 58:16Speaker 1: but I didn't know that it was like the number
- 58:18Speaker 1: one highlight. You thought it was trapping golf course. Mus
- 58:21Speaker 1: grats with Seth. I that that's hard to top. But
- 58:26Speaker 1: Mexico is pretty cool too. Yeah, man, it's a uh
- 58:32Speaker 1: he know, it's funny. Somebody in the group, I think
- 58:33Speaker 1: Matt de said to me, he said, this is my
- 58:37Speaker 1: first international hunt, and uh, I don't ever really look
- 58:41Speaker 1: at it that because you can look into America. Yeah,
- 58:44Speaker 1: but half the stuff you see is in America. Yeah,
- 58:47Speaker 1: we're so close to the border that you can see
- 58:50Speaker 1: the border blimps um. But it does put it in perspective.
- 58:55Speaker 1: It is an international hunt, and you can't you can't
- 58:58Speaker 1: deny it. No, it's it's it makes it all that
- 59:01Speaker 1: much more special. Yeah. But the fact that you drive
- 59:04Speaker 1: over and then it's only like what the hell it is?
- 59:09Speaker 1: Would you consider any less or more international? If you
- 59:12Speaker 1: drove into British Columbia went Stone sheep hunting, I would
- 59:18Speaker 1: consider it equally uninternational for some reason. But I don't
- 59:23Speaker 1: know why. It's a North American when I hear like
- 59:25Speaker 1: an internationally, I don't know. It's just it's just stupid.
- 59:27Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean like, I don't know why
- 59:30Speaker 1: that's very much. That's a that's another country. But yeah,
- 59:36Speaker 1: they're intercontinental hunts. Yeah, I'm I'm mixing up intercontinental with international,
- 59:42Speaker 1: and I think that's the probably the root of a
- 59:46Speaker 1: lot of issues at customs for both Canada and Mexico
- 59:49Speaker 1: with American Uh hunters traveling is there's part of your
- 59:54Speaker 1: brain that just says, listen, your jobs. Just semantics. Yeah,
- 59:58Speaker 1: like you're you're you're right next to I can throw
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: a rock over the border. Let's not act like I'm
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: far away from my house exactly right up that a way. Um.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Any kind of when we started going down to to
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: scenario years ago, uh, there was always a little tension
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: because I think we started going after things went, after
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: the border got where it started to develop a reputation. Uh,
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: the we were dismantling cartel's it was leading to a
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: lot of strife, beheadings. Yeah, I was leaving to a
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: lot of turf wars. Violence was kind of like boiling
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: over um. And it was like a little unnerving even
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: though I don't know how many times we've been down there,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: nothing has ever happened. Ever, they're not even kind of
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: did you were you guys little uh edgy driving down
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: and being around no and you know, because I'm probably
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: coming on you know trip number ten down there. Um,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: you know, every time you go you can get more
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: and more comfortable. But I think that's a good question
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: for the guys from First Light if if they felt
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: that edginess at all. Well, two of the dudes from
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: First Light, I think spent a lot of time in Mexico. Yeah.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: We I've driven uh down to the tip of bo
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Back a couple of times and spent a spent a
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: bunch of time down there. So um, first time taking
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: firearms across, which was a little different, but uh, it
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: wasn't it was. It was pretty mellow for the most part. Yeah,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I'd agree with that. I thought the checking the firearms
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and was kind of the most interesting part of it.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: But otherwise I don't think. I think you get down
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: there and you realize it's it's people too, you know,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: like no one's looking to give you a hard time
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: really per se. I felt pretty safe the whole time,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Duke you two, no no fear of safety whatsoever or
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: lack of safety. Yeah, I mean it, I do feel
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: like it went pretty smooth. Um, that was the first
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: time I'd ever personally traveled anywhere with a with a firearm,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: and so um, I mean, you guys helped helped me.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I think it went pretty dangn smooth. Yeah, but when
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: you got across the border, you weren't like, all of
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: a sudden worried about getting abducted by a drug cartel
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: impossive possibly helped for ransom. No, that's interesting. It must
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: just be different times, because that was definitely in our
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: heads when we went for the first my first time,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: I thought about it, but I thought about a lot.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: But um, I mean this time, this trip was my
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: second time down there, and it was like not anything
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: near the first time. The one time that I got
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: most nervous was just when we were staying in a
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: place along the highway for along like a very busy road,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: and I don't know why, but like nothing happened, nothing happened.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: There was one kid that just had a shady personality
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: about him. And he might have been the nicest, like best,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: you know, law abiding kid citizen ever, but he had
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: he had a tinge of shadiness. But if he was
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: hanging out with you guys on on a shoot for
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: whatever reason, on some property in the US, from what
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: he guys described me, he probably would have been like, man,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: I don't like leaving my stuff around that kid. Oh absolutely,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: And I was pissed because Steve made too sort of
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: like not that it was necessary or even inferred, but
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: to sort of like make everything just completely good. Steve
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: made me give my pocket knife to the guy because
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: he really wanted a knife. Seems like if we don't
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: give him your knife, and then who knows what's gonna happen?
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Give him your knife? I just got mine. Yeah. He
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: was a burrito buck. Brito buck. Um. That's the buck
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: that we killed on the last morning of the hunt. Um.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: So we're kind of going backwards here, starting with the
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: last I'm just looking at what you wrote down. Yeah,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: but we can start there. What happened to us too,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: is that we got a It's really kind of odd.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: The story starts earlier, no, the day before. UM on
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: the radio. We use radios there to communicate both just
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: you know, between hunting parties and then to also during
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: the hunt to help us rEFInd deer that we've spotted
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: from long distances. Well, I'm on the radio with somebody
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: and some other dude chimes in, and it was sometimes
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: because I don't know the guys from first light, you
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: know that, Well, and I didn't know their voices. I'm like,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: who is that? You know? Now? Do you know who
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: you're talking to? This is you? Honest, I'm trying to
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: talk to Seth, not Matt d So identify yourself. This
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: guy's like, oh man, sorry, we're just on the same channel.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: We were down in Escanan and we're just heading back
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: to the border. I'm like, oh, okay, do you guys
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: recuse here hunt? Yeah, he goes. I'm like, how did
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: you guys? Do you guys? Oh? Man, dad killed one
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: and we killed I'm like, oh man. And when he
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: said that, I'm like, does he think he knows me?
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Because he just like said dad, Like, you know, like
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: I'm supposed to know who his dad is, you know.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: So they had a decent hunt. I think they went
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: three for four. But uh, he asked me how long
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: we're hunting? I said through Sunday. No, through Saturday, drop
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: going back on Sunday. Goes, oh, well, did you hear
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: the military is closed on Sunday? And just for everybody listening,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: you have to check your guns in when you go
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: to Mexico with the police and the military, the federalies
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: and with the US dudes. Yeah, and then leaving, you
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: go through the same process and you get a signature
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: or a stamp on this gun permit on the way
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: out that says you are now leaving with the same weapon.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: And uh if you don't have that signature and stamp,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: you legally can't cross the border. And uh so I'm like, oh,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: you know we're supposed to leave that day, so we've
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: gotta change plans. So uh we figured out that we
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: had to leave a day early. Luckily, the military is
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: gonna still be open till five on Saturday, so we
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: could hunt the morning. So we get that all figured out.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: But we are now you found this out for some
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: dudes driving on the highway that you picked up on
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: your radio. Yes, yes, and then then I I confirmed
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: confirmed with our fixer uh cell phone and confirmed with
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: her and so yes, we yeah, it was it was
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: very uh um, what's the word not coincidental? So uh
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: so we said, dad, this is the guy you know. No,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: it's just like, yeah, it was. It was moving along
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: pretty quick, and you know, we had hunting to do
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: and and so anyways, we're feeling the pressure now where
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: we're cut by half a day of hunting. You know,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: at least, you know, maybe a little bit more so. Anyways,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: last morning every's hunting hard. Cal has a tag unfilled,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: and so does Chase, and so we split the groups
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: up evenly. Uh, Chase and Seth and I go to
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: a spot where uh we had seen some deer maybe
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: the day before, and Seth had seen a little rut
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: party where usually you see like a couple does or
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: a dog getting chased around by two or three bucks.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: And we're gonna go to that same area and see
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: if you know, maybe a branch chandler buck has shown
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: up in that area. Can I can I interject real quick?
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: I feel like those rut parties move, They certainly can. Yeah,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: there's a road party and then you go there the
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: next day and the rough party is elsewhere, man right.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: I used to think like, oh, I'll go there tomorrow hill,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: but they just pop over the hill or anyway. There
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: was also a lot of doughs there. Yeah, I mean
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: we had like what five six seven does in this
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: one little basin and um or I mean literally one hillside.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: They were holding tight. Yeah. Yeah, sat Ha seen a
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: couple of small bucks. He had heard another very deep
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: guttural runts down there. Yeah, it's crazy how much you
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: hear the grunts um and uh. Anyways, we pop up
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: on the knob cess looking that direction, and because we're
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: near another zone that we like to hunt, I just
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: go to the other side of the knob, maybe seventy
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: five yards away, and just figured we'll glass all directions.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: And first bucklet pops up. You know, Chase is going
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: to go after and uh, it didn't take but you know,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: it was such a pretty morning. The layers were so
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: nice in the distance of the mountains and the sunrise.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: Actually took two minutes to snap some iPhone pictures and
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: it was just so nice. And then I put my
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: binoculars up and and talkt to myself, look where you've
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: been seeing the most, dear, And I looked on that
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: one hillside and it didn't take like a half of sweep,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, there's a buck. Call everybody over
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: And Chase like, looks good to me. Let's go. So
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: we mail off the hill and we make it like
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: a hundred yards some sets that's gonna stay back and
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: and uh, we're and keep an eye on the buck
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: and we make about hunrey yards down the hill and
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: we spook another buck. Get ready, and I look back
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: at Chase and he's like doing the like thing where
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: like you're grabbing at your shoulder. We're like, you're you're
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: looking for where your rifle strap is sling, and then
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: you're like it's not there. So he hustles back up
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: the hill, goes to get my rifle, and he had
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: to borrow my rifle. Oh yeah, yeah yeah, and uh
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: yeah yeah, hard to go kill him without a rifle insight.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I hadn't carried a rifle the first few days, so
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I got pretty comfortable with that program. And I'm glad
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: that buck popped up. It could have been a real problem. Yeah,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: we might have made it a long ways down that
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: hill and before he remembered. So we make it down there. Um,
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: we get in. We're sort of creeping up on this
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: like low bench that's underneath the hillside the bucks on
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: and uh, you know, sets kind of telling me last
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: where he's seeing the buck. I can see this little
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: draw that says describing for me. We're three to four
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: hundred yards away and I'm I'm feeling very confident. It's
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: like we found a buck, we made the stock, and
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: we refined him, and now we're within shooting range, right,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: So it's like you're like still a little anxious, but
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: you're like feeling that like you're starting to get like
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: those visions of grandeur. I like to call him where
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: you're like you're like imagining taking the grip and your photos. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: we might have another buck dad here shortly and um
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: at that time, I think he's like three fifty ish
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: and we've I spot him and he's in this little
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: shade patch and he's like white out in the open
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: and We've got like a nice shooting lane to him,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: and I'm like, okay, I got him chase, Like, okay, cool,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna take my time and get super comfortable, you know,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: make the shot. I'm like, yeah, that's the right thing
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: to do, Like, you know, let's not rush this, Like
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: we got a big open hill side ahead of us,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Like we're gonna get a shot. Well, sure enough, that bugger,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: Like right, his chase is getting settled in walks behind
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: a tree, and like an hour goes by and there's
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: like he just feeds in a spot where sets like
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: probably sitting up there anything Like why are they not
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: shooting the most frustrating thing from our angle. We couldn't
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: see a deer like nothing. That's like, yeah, he's just
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: right there, you know, it looks broadside to me, and
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: we just had like absolutely nothing. So we're just like,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: stay on him, stay on him. Seth and I are
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: talking about, you know, what trees were looking at to
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: make sure that like when he pops out, will be
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: in the general vicinity. Um, you know, Chase has the
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: gun dial to the proper range. Well, the butt like
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: hooks up with the doll where she was probably there
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: the whole time. But we finally see the dough and
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: she starts moving up the hill. He's following her, and
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: he proceeds to move up the hill and never stopped
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: in an opening and just disappears, out of our lives. Gone,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: goes up up and over the top, open over the top.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: That takes maybe five to ten minutes as he makes
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: this move, feeds a little bit, but basically follows her
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: up and over the top to go to the shady
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: side of the hill. Out of our lives. Man. So
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: we went from feeling pretty dang good about the situation
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: to the lowest of low because it's the last morning.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: Now it's like nine am. We made like a call
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: that the heart out was gonna be ten and because
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: we had to go and pack and make it to
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: the military, you know, by five, and uh, we're just bombed. Man.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: You know, it's just like you just it's the gut punch.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: You know, everybody's been there, and you're like you like,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: like I said, you could see the grip and grin
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: and now now you're just like, oh man, I don't
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: feel so good. But there's like a silver lining because
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: everything happened that morning so quickly that we hadn't got
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: our little burrito in. Now you've been down there, you
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: eat like sometimes he's Brito's for dinners, but most of
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: the britos go down as breakfast slash lunch burritos because
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: every morning Loope builds you. Or if there's a different
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: cook there, but Loope we've had the last couple of years.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: We love her. She builds you like some version of
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: a bean, potato, meat, bacon, maybe just some eggs in there,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: some salce or whatever burrito you know with you. This
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: year Loupe was packing some fatties. These things were I
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: think some of the times we're like double the size
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: of the normal burrito. Filling up a like a court
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: size baggy two of them, like stuffed big burritos. Um.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: We've had at least two, sometimes three of these every
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: single day. And we're on like day six now. So
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: Chase and I are sitting there not feeling very good
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: about ourselves. But I'm like, yeah, you know what, we
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: didn't have our burritos yet today. Let's have a burrito
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: and we'll just like keep an eyeball on this hill
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: and you know, maybe something will pop out. There was
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: a there was a doll. There there was a buck.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: I tell Seth on the radio. I'm like, hey, just
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: keep watching the hill if we're gonna have a burrito
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: around about where you are. Yeah, I'm in basically in
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: the drainage that Mark Kenyon killed his buck. But we're
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: like up drainage upstream eight yards and we're down on
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: a bench and looking up at the big, bigger farthest
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: left yellow yes, um, before you move on. Yeah, when
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: that's hill. When the buck that you guys saw go
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: up over the top, he like, as I'm following him
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: go up over the top, another buck appeared. He like
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: kicked up another buck. So there's all of a sudden
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: too nice bucks on the hillside. Yeah, I left, he
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: left staring. I left seth starring. I gave him my
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: eighteen by fifty six? Is um sess looking through those things?
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: And you know where I messed up? Man, I gave
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: you my post too. And then I was trying to
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: get my binos on ad at the bottom of the
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: hill and I didn't have that capability. And God does
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: that burn. You've been used used to staring at him
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: through the uh, you know, on a tripod, and then
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: all of a sudden you gotta go into like some
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: rinky dink balancing on your head on your tripod head.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: It sucks. Um. So yeah, ay chase you. You weigh
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: in here anytime you feel it's necessary. But so, yeah,
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: we'll have a burrito. So we're munching away on our burrito.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: It's kind of talking about how we're getting sick of
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: eating burritos. Is there any chopped up onion that bridle?
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: That one didn't have any chopped up onions. I don't
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: think it was still a day good burrito. A lot
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: of us agree that, like with you and me, that
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: after a week of eating maximum food, as much as
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: we love it, the first four days, five days. On
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: that last day, you're kind of like you're like ready
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: to switch diets. On the other hand, just says he
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: could just keep eating. Yeah, just yeah, I get that
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: anywhere I go. Anywhere I go. I dug out the
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: my second burrito of the day for for lunch. This
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: is after a showered and got ready to hit the
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: road and do the march back across the border. And
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: I will admit that that burrito did not go down
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: quite as that one left a little something to be desired.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: So you found the other side of it, Yeah, the
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: other side of your brido love. Uh huh. So Chase
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: and I are stuffing our faces, munching away, kind of
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: having a conversation, you know, while bits of tortill or
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: spitting out of it between our lips, and uh. We
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: had seen a spike since the big buck left over
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: already on the hillside, so we're like, okay, there might
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: be some deer up there. A few more buys, the
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: burrito go down and Chase looks up and he's like, well,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: there's a buck, Like, holy shit, I'll look up there
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: and get my bios on him. And he just happened
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: to be stopping a spot where he's like almost pretty
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: much visible with the naked eyes. I put the bios
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: on him real quick, and you know, with a mouthful brito,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: I'm like, who goal and which I said, shoot that buck?
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: And uh, you know, he gets down on his gun.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: The bucks like kind of in half, like I'm chasing
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: the old scent of a dough move. You know. We're like,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: it doesn't look like he's gonna be sticking around long, right,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: He's not just sitting there feeding, he's like knows the
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: ground traveling. And because we had just gone through the
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: whole exercise of watching that other buck move across the
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: hillside every single marker or like visual marker on that hill,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: whether it was a big white snag with the black
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: burnt gash on the front of it, or the two
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: white rocks together the tall ponderos, so that's sticking up
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: over the horizon. All that stuff had just been recently
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: talked about. So as this bucks now moving across the
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: same landscape, it's very easy to communicate your whole vocabulary square. Yeah,
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: I'm like, remember where we lost the buck, Like, get
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: your going on the meadow below those rocks, dollar your
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: scope to you know, whatever. It was six point five
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: and you know, get ready, bucks gonna be there in
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: two seconds. And uh. Kind of the second funny punchline
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: part of this story is that earlier, when that other
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: buck was going up the hill, I kept trying to
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: like stop him in in in little openings and say
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: hey or like that, and nothing was working. All right,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: he was just falling on this dope. So this time
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: the buck walks into this opening and I might have
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: set a record for loudest because I like I amplified
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: it with my hands and just gave it a you know,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: I might as well just yelled hey totally. And that
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: bugger just freezes up like a statue in the middle
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: of that opening, and it's like looking down the hill,
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: you know what was that? And Uh, again, we were
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: ready because we had just gone through the same thing.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: So Chase already had like a nice rest set up
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: and he was able just to get in right behind
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: his backpack and he had them you know, bipod on
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: his gun and uh we had the range dialed and uh,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: one shot and I saw the bullet hit and he
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: ran roughly, I don't know, yards kind of downhill. One
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: of those runs where his head's moving faster than his legs.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: His front legs can keep up, you know, and uh
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: fell over dead and uh, well, like sweet, that worked out.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: We both looked down. We were kind of bummed out
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: to see that both of us had sort of thrown
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: plopped our half eating burritos. Like they could have landed
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: on six other five other sides, but they both landed
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: with like the filling down into them. Yeah, and so
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: you kind of pick it up and look at it.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: It's it's not as advertising it as it once was.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: But yeah, that's the story of Chase's burrito buckh. The
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: the Couzier hunt, in my mind, comes down like finding them.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: It's the fun part of it, right, It's the challenging part.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: It's the part that you get good at. It's the
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: part that frustrates you that you're not good at. It's
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: like finding them, did you uh having a bunch of
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: newbies down there, these three fellers hadn't done it before, Like,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: how would you sort of grade them? Oh? Man? Uh,
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: top notch some of the best um As a matter
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: of fact, they blow Jay's got away and not quite
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: that good. But a couple of his examples of that
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: the first day. Chase, he's got a pretty good Spanish vocabulary.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: So he and I rolled around in the vehicle with
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: one of the cowboys, the local ranch cowboys to um
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: kind of go over some fence lines and make sure
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: where we could and could not hunt and kind of
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: talk about where you know, he's been seeing deer, and um,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: we had a little time left over that first evening
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: and so we just stopped the kind of a rando
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: spot to glass a little bit, and uh, Chase picked
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: up a deer before I did, like right then and there,
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: and um, then, Uh, I was gonna say Chase spotted
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: his own deer that he ended up killing the buck. Uh,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: So did Matt right, Seth? Yeah, we're yeah. I was
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: hunting with Seth and Matt and uh, you know he
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: picked up his own deer. So yeah, man, I'd say
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: overall they did a amazing jobs first time deer hunters.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: And then did you uh the weather is a lot
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: different than what we've seen a fair bit in the past.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: I wouldn't say a lot. Um, it was really good
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: the first two days where it was cold, deer on
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: their feet most of the day, and then and then
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: it got hot and I can't say that it got
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: any hotter than it's gotten because I think in years
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: in past we've had lolls too, and you definitely realized
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: that like cooler tamps, cloudy days seemed to have the
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: deer on their feet more make come easier to find
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: um if if like our killing success you know has
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: any uh is an example of it. The first two
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: days that were the coldest, we killed four bucks, and
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: then we killed one buck. The next four days of
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: hunting um that were hotter. So um Yeah, but I
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: wouldn't call it abnormal. So jealous man, just freaking jealous.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: I was so jealous. I didn't know if I should like.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: I kind of felt like just hoping you guys didn't
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: get anything like in something bad did happen traveling like
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: not like bad bad, but like pretty bad. I can
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: see you wishing that on like Yanni and I, but
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: not on you know. When I was having a mind
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: movie about it, it was more that you guys, you
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: guys or what. I just hope you had a great trip. Yeah.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: I think that if a bad hunt it wouldn't have
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: um bode well for you because I think that you
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: want to go back next year and you want to
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: hear good things about that ranch and go back to
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: that ranch and have and be able to think about
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: it for a year that like, there's we saw some
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: big bucks that we didn't kill. They're alive next year. Yeah,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: but it could also be like this, like let's see
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: you went and it was no good. Then it would
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: be like the year Steve couldn't go. We weren't able
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: to really pull it together. M might be how you
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: viewed it. I didn't realize to what degree he really
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: made the hunt, you know, the gear conversations around the
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: dinner table at night, we're definitely lackluster without your presence.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: How much did you guys talk about how you wished
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: I was there was that like a thing that would
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: come up, like at least at least a half dozen
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: times a day. So if there's twelve waking hours in
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: a day, i'd say, you know, every two hours, you'd
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: be like, God, do I wish? Yeah, I wonder how
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: Steve's doing. You're sure makes this trip. Finally had to
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: bam the topic from conversation out right. Yeah, I was
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: getting kind of weird. You know, Uh, Seth, you got
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: your first CUIs dear, Ye first cust Basically my Seth
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: was going down there as a as a photographer, but
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: then also he turned into a hunter at the last
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: minute when I couldn't go. Yeah, which did you like
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: sharing a gun? Oh? It was. It was like the
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: best experience. Everybody carried Cal carried the gun. He ended
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: up spotting the deer and he was like, do you
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: want to shoot that deer? And I was like yes,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: and he handed me his gun that he had been carrying. Um,
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: We've made like a little sneak on it to get
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: in a position, and I shot cross canyon to seventy two.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: It was like a magical sneak too, because we ranged
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: put you right where you needed to be from where
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: we spotted the deer, and it was for something. And
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: then three and a half minute, five minutes sneak was
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: to sewo. I mean it was great, not one of
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: those aggravating sneaks where you do a lot of sneaking
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, I can see yea four oh nine. Yeah,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: So I shoot the buck. We watched the buck die,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: and we it there and talk about it for a
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: little bit and then Duke and I drop like we
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: drop off the hill and I hand the gun back
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: to Cal and he continues to hunt. It's like having
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: a having like in the old days, and you had
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: a guy to carry your gun. Yeah. Yeah, So I
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: had his gun for like maybe ten minutes. And this
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: was an important deer too. It was the first morning,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: first day, and I mean got it right over with. Yeah,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: it was just like getting the ball rolling, you know,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: it was great. And then we hiked out of there,
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: switched locations, so that was like right up the dos
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: are cut outside of the ranch where you could drive
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: if you had vehicles capable of getting there. But we
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: just hiked out of the ranch. Um, which works great
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: anyway other side of the creek or the other side
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: of the creek, yeah, um. And then topped off her water,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: drove back up into the zone where I've gotten a
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: couple of bucks now, and Seth found a great glass
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: and knob that we hadn't been to before. And Seth
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: spotted a buck that Duke wanted to go after. And
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: and I'll give Duke a lot of credit here too,
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: because the it was a you know, I mean, relocating
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: after you move is a lot of times easier said
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: than done. And he took off down our mountain, went
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: across the drainage started going up the other side, and
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: he was like, okay, yeah, I got him. Okay, well
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: that worked out. That take care of but also like
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: very good decision making skills on on old Buck Duke's part,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: because he was like, that's a good buck, I'll shoot
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: that one and off to the races essentially, so many alright,
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: so real quick, what do you guys like? You guys
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: like thumbs up, thumbs down on hunt? Who's her? Did
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: you guys meet Jay Scott? Yeah? Yeah, Yeah, he's a
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: good dude. What what's just uh what you guys about
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: as much fun as you can have? What's your guys like, uh?
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: Just one at a time there? I know where it's
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: hard because your remote, But what's your give your sort
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: of high level impressions of the whole deal? Um? I thought,
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: man between the country and and doing it in Mexico,
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: like the folks down there on that ranch, um and
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: that who's deer themselves, I thought it was about as
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: much fun as you can have on aunting trip. Honestly,
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: I see why um guys try and do it every year.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: I loved it. Yeah, I would, I would echo Chase.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: I think just echoing what he said, and I personally
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: enjoyed the the disconnectivity of the Hascian and all that
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: you're kind of just only focused on the hunt, and
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: there's there's not a lot of service or electricity or
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: anything to really distract you. So I felt like it's
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: kind of freshing in a way to just focus purely
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: on that. Matt. Matt speaking of the lack of electricity
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: and the lack of because the stuff. Well know that
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: if you remember, the house is set up on a
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: solar system, but the solar system has been um down.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: I think we've been there three years. I think it's
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: been broken three years. And so like one day we
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: had like an hour of electricity after dark, and then
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: the following six days it was just like you know,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: living back in the day flashlights and flashlightsh candle Duke,
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: did you end up throwing a tape on the buck
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: that you shot? You know, I haven't yet. I plan
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: on doing that here in the next couple of days though,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: just just out of curiosity. Um, but I have not yet. Yeah,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: be interesting. It would be great to get Matt's as well,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: just is because Matt's is a little whiter, just just
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: healthful references. Yeah, your honest buck is a great, great buck,
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: like the you know, he just like the frame visually
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: everything is is uh kind of like that next class.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I was badass, but he broke one of
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: his antlers off. Yeah, and to me, I was like, oh,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: that's an awesome buck. That's an awesome buck. That we
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: met up with some of J Scott's guys on the U.
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: S side of the border. We had to drop some
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: stuff off to him and they're like, boy, that would
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: have been a good one because it was because it
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: was busted, really referencing the busted portion. But it was
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: like kind of dismissed there. They're focused more on what's
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: not there than what is there. Right, That was the
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: way I took it anyway. Yeah. Well yeah, I'm I'm
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: glad you guys are back. Man, I'm glad nothing too
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: bad happened to you. I'm glad you got all all
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: that action. That's good stuff, man, it's good stuff. Thanks.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: We'll trying to go next year. We'll let you shoot first. Yes,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: that's a good idea. It's still a magical trade, man,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: good one. That's great. Real dry this year, not much
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's an interesting point to bring up. Becass
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: has been there in years past. Uh, so dry that
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: the oaks there. I don't know exactly what brand of
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: oaks they are, Um, but it's a gambles, I don't
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: think so, not lives or gambles. Well, I think it
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: is a live oak. Is like a group of when
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: when I just think of live oak, I just think
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: of an oak that doesn't drop its leaves, you know,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: that has literally you know it actually more like I'm
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: being a dumb I'm gonna cut that part out. It
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: acts like a cornifferous tree almost, like right, it just
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: has green leaves year round. And uh, because I can't
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: remember if the oaks at my in laws on the
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: coast North Carolina they call him five oaks, I can't
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: remember they drop them anyhow. Uh, probably fifty of the
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: oaks on these hillsides were red and brown with dry
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: brittle leads from drought yea. And interestingly, they weren't spending
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: any time on the yellow grassy hillsides like they like
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: to do feeding. Like if you saw them there. Cal
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: made a good point. It's just like they were just
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: traveling across it. And uh, we saw a deer full
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: on like on their hind legs. Matt actually saw my
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: buck just like on its hind legs feeding inside of
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: a small oak, just picking acorns off the oak um.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: And then the man's anita also we realized produces some
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: sort of a berry or fruit they like to eat,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: because we saw quite a few deer like just in
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: the man's needa head on the ground for five ten
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: minutes at a time, just slurping up something at the
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: base of those bushes. I'm glad you guys added to
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: the body and knowledge. Twenty one species of oak occur
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: in the Sonoran Desert region, so that kind yeah. Uh,
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: but here is the thing that we would be paying
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: attention to this year is good water years. They don't
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: need to drop any leaves, and they'll they'll stay green
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: and pour water years they'll shed their leaves and so
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: we definitely saw way more evidence those leaves turning and dropping.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: So alright, boys, alright, first, like guys, thanks man. I
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: was bummed that you couldn't be up here. I didn't
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: know you weren't HERETI I walked in here and you
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: weren't here. I thought you were here. Yeah, I wish
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: I wish we could have made it, but hell of
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: a trip. Yeah, everybody's gotta get themselves some vaccines and whatnot,
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: and we'll we'll get together and talk about it. Alright, buddy,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: cal will continue to dig in on this. I want
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: to cover more of this song. I want to talk
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: about the landback deal. Yeah, me too. It it'll be
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: it'll be a good conversation. We didn't get to talk
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: about that giant colon when we talk about it on
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: an upcoming episode. What I'm gonna look into as part
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: of that conversation. Do you remember that, like supposedly Elvis's
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: colin was full all kind of cheeseburgers and stuff. You
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about? That was that I always
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: heard was it was? But it was John Wayne too.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: Wasn't it all kinds of cheeseburgers? Yeah? Yeah, pack full
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: of burgers. I didn't know that. I do know that. Um,
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: you want to see you This is my concluding thought.
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: You want to see a freaking documentary. Have you watched
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: Five Came Back? That's the five different directors. It's it's
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: a documentary about five directors who were directors or became
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: directors who served in world War two and about the
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: impacts of that on their careers. And then there's five
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: contemporary directors that are kind of telling like Spielberg and
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: are kind of telling the story of these individuals and
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: they're it's like heartbreaking, heartwarming. It's a phenomenal documentary. It's
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: about film, war everything. But in it it was pointed out,
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: you know, John Wayne did all those john Ford movies.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: John Ford is one of the directors they cover. They
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: also cover the guy that did uh Um, Frank Coppa,
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: who did It's a Wonderful Life, which tanks so bad
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: at bankrupted the production company, which is crazy tanked tanked
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: It's a Wonderful Life. He lived to see it do
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: what it did. But john Ford, you know, made all
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: those movies that John Wayne. John Ford was a veteran.
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: John Wayne wasn't a veteran. And the movie talks about
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: how they used to kind of like humiliate on set.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: All the veterans was kind of humiliate John Wayne, flying leathernecks,
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: always acting like he always playing these roles where he's
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: like a soldier and a symbol for yeah, and he wasn't.
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: And these dudes were and they tease him because they
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: said he didn't know how to salute right, never learned
