- 0:18Little Kittens Who Lost their Mittens by Laura Rountree Smith. Losing their mittens.
- 0:25Once upon a time, three little kittens went out to slide upon the ice.
- 0:30Old mother KitKat called after them, Dot, Tot, Trot, you
- 0:34have forgotten your mittens. They came back, pitter patter, pitter patter,
- 0:38as fast as their fairy little feet would carry them. Old mother KitKat said,
- 0:43oh, three little kittens, come, put on your mittens. And
- 0:46she handed Dot a pair of red mittens, and Tot a pair of blue
- 0:49mittens, and Trot a pair of brown mittens. And the three little kittens
- 0:54went merrily off to skate. I don't like to wear mittens, said Dot.
- 0:58I don't like to either, said Tom. Trot said, oh meow,
- 1:02they squeezed my paws. Now what do you suppose those naughty little kittens
- 1:06did. They took off their mittens and left them on the bank by the
- 1:10ice pond. They put on their cunning little skates and began to skate to
- 1:14and fro, to and fro, and the wind whistled and called, I
- 1:18may freeze your paws and toes. Nobody knows, nobody knows my long whiskers,
- 1:23cried Dot, how cold it is skating on the ice by my long
- 1:26tail, said Tot, how cold my paws are. Trot said, we
- 1:30will go back at once to the bank and get our mittens. The three
- 1:34little kittens did not know that three little foxes had crept up on the bank.
- 1:38They did not know that the three little foxes said, see the nice
- 1:42little mittens left here by the kittens. They did not know that the three
- 1:46little foxes had put on their mittens and had run away, waving their beautiful
- 1:49tails behind them. When the three little kittens got to the bank and saw
- 1:53that their mittens were gone, Dot and Tot cried together, we are sad,
- 1:57little kittens lost our new mittens. Brave little Trot said, we are
- 2:02smart little kittens. We'll go find our mittens. Then Dot and Tot dried
- 2:07their eyes on their little weave pocket handkerchiefs and said, you are so cheerful,
- 2:10brother Trot. We will follow where you lead. The three little kittens
- 2:15looked one hour and thirty six minutes for their mittens, but they could not
- 2:19find them, and so they went sadly homeward. Old Mother KitKat stood in
- 2:23the doorway looking for them. She cried, go back, go back,
- 2:27you naughty kittens, go back and pick up your nice new mittens. The
- 2:30three little kittens hung their heads and said, we've put them on the bank
- 2:34to dry. We hoped to find them by and by, you naughty kittens,
- 2:37Old KitKat said. She sent them without supper to bed. The three
- 2:42little kittens cried, mew, mew, mew. Can't we have a dish
- 2:45of milk? Can't we have a chicken bone? Old Mother KitKat shook her
- 2:49head. So the three little kittens went pit a pat, pit a pat,
- 2:53up stairs to bed. They were so hungry they kept talking about good
- 2:57things to eat, and that made them want their supper more and more.
- 3:00Fish and bones said dot, milk, and creams said tot. Meat,
- 3:04and gravy said trot. Old Mother kit Kat called hush, be still,
- 3:08for over the hill the sandman comes his bag to fill. At this,
- 3:13the three little kittens pulled the covers high up over their heads, for they
- 3:16did not want the sandman to tuck them in his bag. All this time,
- 3:21three little foxes wearing three pairs of mittens were dancing merrily in the moonlight.
- 3:25The sandman came up over the hill and peeped in at the window.
- 3:30He saw the beds where the three little kittens lay, with the covers pulled
- 3:34up over their heads. He sang softly, Oh, ho, little kittens,
- 3:38I saw your lost mittens? Where where? Where? Cried the three
- 3:42little kittens in one breath, uncovering their heads. The sandman answered in a
- 3:46sing song, lazy kind of way. Come jump in the sack I have
- 3:50on my back. The three little kittens were thinking so hard about their mittens
- 3:53that they forgot to be afraid, and they went whisk bound into the Sandman's
- 3:59sack and rowed merrily far away over hill and dale away away away. Suddenly
- 4:04the Sandman's sack broke and out fell the three little kittens. The sandman did
- 4:10not notice what had happened, and he ran on, leaving the three little
- 4:13kittens behind him. They saw a little wee house in the woods, and
- 4:16ran and knocked on the door. Old Mother Catastrophe, the oldest cat in
- 4:20the world stuck her head out of the window and called, did you happen
- 4:25to have a mishap? You sadly disturbed me from my nap. The three
- 4:29little kittens answered, Old Mother Catastrophe, kind and good. We are three
- 4:32little kittens lost in the wood. Old Mother Catastrophe always knew what to do.
- 4:38She opened her door and hugged and kissed the three little kittens, and
- 4:41said, to the delight of all, now for the cookie jar. She
- 4:45put a cookie jar on the floor, and the three little kittens put in
- 4:47their three little paws without saying buy or leave, or thank you or if
- 4:51you please? Then what do you suppose happened? The cookie jar rose in
- 4:56the air and settled down out of reach on the highest shelf in the pantry.
- 5:00The three little kittens cried, oh and ah, and what happened to
- 5:03the cookie jar? Old Mother Catastrophe said, I do not really mean to
- 5:08tease, but learn some little words like these, thank you say and if
- 5:13you please. The three little kittens said, thank you, thank you,
- 5:16please give us a cookie. Please do at that. The cookie jar floated
- 5:20down again, and they ate cookies to their hearts content. They told Old
- 5:25Mother catastrophe about their lost mittens. But she only shook her wise old head
- 5:29and said, enough said enough, said. Night time is the time for
- 5:32bed. She tucked the three little kittens up in her own bed, Dot
- 5:36and tot and trot fell asleep, wondering about their lost mittens. All this
- 5:42time, three little foxes wearing three pairs of mittens were dancing merrily in the
- 5:46moonlight. End of Section one
