Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: What's going on everyone? Emily Badi here, you're listening to
- 0:22Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I cannot believe that we
- 0:26Speaker 1: are at the end of June. It truly is mind
- 0:29Speaker 1: blowing to me. I feel like it came in a
- 0:31Speaker 1: second and now summer is like a third of the
- 0:34Speaker 1: way over, and I am just I'm not prepared. I
- 0:39Speaker 1: will say though, that I am prepared for what I
- 0:45Speaker 1: feel like is going to be a frustrating few weeks
- 0:48Speaker 1: right now. I have a lot of pitches in the world.
- 0:52Speaker 1: So basically a big part of what I do is
- 0:55Speaker 1: I come up with fun ways to collaborate with brands
- 0:59Speaker 1: that work on behalf of my brand, that being Hurdle
- 1:03Speaker 1: and also their brand. So examples of this could be
- 1:07Speaker 1: me working at Ultratrail de mont Blanc with Hoka and
- 1:10Speaker 1: hosting a workshop for women on the ground. It could
- 1:14Speaker 1: be me collaborating with Nike to excite Hurdle listeners both
- 1:19Speaker 1: about their new sneaker while also giving them an opportunity
- 1:23Speaker 1: to come together and gather. And so when I tell
- 1:26Speaker 1: you I've been busy lately, I have been busy lately
- 1:30Speaker 1: concepting a lot of fun collaborations ideas ways that I
- 1:36Speaker 1: can work candidly that would exist between August and November.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And what I am remembering right now is that although
- 1:48Speaker 1: I would like these things to be locked in asap,
- 1:52Speaker 1: my sense of urgency isn't someone else's problem. What I
- 1:58Speaker 1: mean by that is just because I'm on some sort
- 2:01Speaker 1: of a timeline, just because I would like things to
- 2:04Speaker 1: be a certain way, it doesn't mean that I can
- 2:06Speaker 1: expect that others are going to act accordingly. So how
- 2:10Speaker 1: does one execute when they are anxious? Well, while I'm
- 2:14Speaker 1: playing the waiting game. My opportunity then is to keep ideating.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I am not the type of person that likes to
- 2:22Speaker 1: put all my eggs in one basket. I like to
- 2:24Speaker 1: have a lot of different pots on the stove, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: so I could just sit here and stare at my inbox.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But that's not the kind of lady that I am.
- 2:35Speaker 1: This lesson that my sense of urgency is in someone
- 2:40Speaker 1: else's responsibility. It's one that works both ways. Right, I
- 2:45Speaker 1: have been able to execute and maintain my boundaries knowing
- 2:49Speaker 1: that generally speaking, it's not that serious. Yes, there is
- 2:53Speaker 1: a time and a place to be on a deadline
- 2:55Speaker 1: and get someone answers when they really need them. But really, realistically,
- 3:01Speaker 1: if you have to just take a deep breath before
- 3:05Speaker 1: you get back to business, do what you need to
- 3:08Speaker 1: do to be good. This is just something that I
- 3:13Speaker 1: have really come into over the last handful of years
- 3:16Speaker 1: of working for myself, and I think that sometimes as
- 3:20Speaker 1: a contractor, as a gig worker, as a freelancer, it's
- 3:23Speaker 1: easier said than done. I am constantly trying to figure
- 3:26Speaker 1: out where my next paycheck is coming from, and that
- 3:29Speaker 1: can be a little bit stressful. But I know this
- 3:32Speaker 1: to be true. I have never been in a situation
- 3:35Speaker 1: where I wasn't okay, and I am not the kind
- 3:38Speaker 1: of person that would ever allow that to happen. So
- 3:42Speaker 1: even when my stress levels are high, even when I
- 3:45Speaker 1: have a little bit of a sense of urgency, I
- 3:48Speaker 1: trust the process, knowing that whatever is for me won't
- 3:51Speaker 1: pass me by and that I have the opportunity to
- 3:55Speaker 1: take that deep breath and move forward. And so the
- 3:59Speaker 1: waiting game it's not fun, but trust me, it'll definitely
- 4:04Speaker 1: teach you a thing or two. My prompt for you
- 4:07Speaker 1: this week, what's not so serious for you? What is
- 4:10Speaker 1: something that you've been putting a lot of pressure on,
- 4:12Speaker 1: that you've been freaking out about that. You're kind of like,
- 4:15Speaker 1: oh my goodness, what is happening here? And how can
- 4:19Speaker 1: you just give yourself a little bit of grace and
- 4:21Speaker 1: ease off a little bit? What are you making an
- 4:24Speaker 1: urgent issue that's not really an urgent issue? And now
- 4:30Speaker 1: a listener question.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Hey m Meg from Monroe here. I am looking to
- 4:36Speaker 2: refresh my wardrobe in a capsule wardrobe sort of way,
- 4:40Speaker 2: and I'm wondering if you have staple quality items that
- 4:45Speaker 2: you reach for go to that you know you can
- 4:48Speaker 2: mix and match with different things, and if you have
- 4:50Speaker 2: any recommendations. As always, thank you for all that you do.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Oh we love a capsule wardrobe, a staple wardrobe. I
- 4:57Speaker 1: was literally just having a conversation with a couple of
- 5:00Speaker 1: girl friends about spending a decent amount of money on
- 5:03Speaker 1: items that are extremely unique. I feel as though the
- 5:08Speaker 1: things that I want to invest in are going to
- 5:10Speaker 1: be things that if I had to bring eight items
- 5:14Speaker 1: on a trip, those are probably going to be the
- 5:17Speaker 1: most expensive items in my closet. So this means for me,
- 5:21Speaker 1: things like a great pair of jeans right now, my
- 5:24Speaker 1: favorite jeans are actually not all that expensive. They're from
- 5:29Speaker 1: a company called Bershka, which you can likento a European Zara.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Also on the denim front, really into Levi's classic and
- 5:37Speaker 1: also page lately other things that I do invest in
- 5:41Speaker 1: a really great staple designer bag. I bought my first
- 5:46Speaker 1: Saint Laurent perse a couple of years ago. It was
- 5:50Speaker 1: something that I saved up to buy for years and
- 5:52Speaker 1: years and debated that purchase forever, and it is truly
- 5:58Speaker 1: one of the most used and prized possessions that I
- 6:01Speaker 1: own now. It's a simple black crossbody that can also
- 6:06Speaker 1: be a handheld moment and oh, I just love her.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Other wardrobe items outside of accessories in Denham, if you're
- 6:14Speaker 1: looking for a great Oxford, I recently have been obsessed
- 6:18Speaker 1: with this oversized two tone Oxford from Anthropology, and then
- 6:24Speaker 1: even simple basics that are a little bit more elevated.
- 6:27Speaker 1: So right now I look down, I'm wearing a crop
- 6:31Speaker 1: black high neck tank top from Lululemon. Now, of course
- 6:35Speaker 1: I could buy a tank top like this at a
- 6:37Speaker 1: place like gu which is the sister store to Uniclo,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and I have before, but I know that this Lululemon
- 6:46Speaker 1: quality tank top is going to hold up as I
- 6:49Speaker 1: wear it again. And again something like a great pair
- 6:53Speaker 1: of sandals. Yes, I have bought many a sandal at Target,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but and I'm not just saying this because of my
- 6:59Speaker 1: recent partnership. I have owned a pair of Birkenstocks for
- 7:04Speaker 1: at least six years now and they're still awesome. So
- 7:08Speaker 1: this is what I'm talking about when it comes to
- 7:11Speaker 1: investing in your wardrobe and the pieces that make you
- 7:14Speaker 1: feel comfy and good and you know are going to
- 7:17Speaker 1: hold up regardless of what you've got on the calendar,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and then otherwise, if you are looking to have fun
- 7:23Speaker 1: with your wardrobe. I am super big on renting so lately,
- 7:28Speaker 1: not sponsored at all, I've been experimenting with Newly and
- 7:31Speaker 1: it's fun to have a few different options in my
- 7:33Speaker 1: closet that are a little bit outside the box that
- 7:37Speaker 1: I'll wear for this month and then they'll go back
- 7:39Speaker 1: to where they came from. But rent the runway another option.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So many different ways to feel out your individual style.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Hope this was helpful. Make sure you are following along
- 7:51Speaker 1: with Hurdle over on social It's over at Hurdle podcast.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I am over at Emily a Body and with that
- 7:57Speaker 1: another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys, next time.
