- 0:18Speaker 1: it's it's definitely not the best we went that someone
- 0:21Speaker 1: has to fight for their life, you know, in the
- 0:24Speaker 1: in the society where this justice system, in justice system
- 0:29Speaker 1: frequently makes mistakes, you know, So you know, it's sad
- 0:33Speaker 1: that we have to have this conversation, but it's definitely needed.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We want to utilize our platform to do whatever we
- 0:38Speaker 1: can to save this man's life. So, Jimmy, you know
- 0:41Speaker 1: you've been here since the beginning. You know this is
- 0:45Speaker 1: your best friend. Could you give us like a play
- 0:49Speaker 1: by playoffs from the beginning to you know, some what
- 0:54Speaker 1: to now, like what's what's how this happened? What's going
- 0:57Speaker 1: on and just give us up to speak. Yeah, sure, man.
- 1:01Speaker 1: First of all, I appreciate your having is on this
- 1:04Speaker 1: amazing show. Man. We greatly appreciate it. Julias Jones is
- 1:07Speaker 1: a gentleman from Oklahoma City. We were from North Side, Okay,
- 1:11Speaker 1: see and uh, me and Julia has been best friends
- 1:14Speaker 1: since the sixth grade. A little about who he is,
- 1:17Speaker 1: so you know, he's from an amazing family with a
- 1:20Speaker 1: two parent home. What made it special for him and
- 1:23Speaker 1: I We were one of the only two families that
- 1:26Speaker 1: had both our moms and dads in the household. That's
- 1:29Speaker 1: important as I get along with the story, Uh, most
- 1:33Speaker 1: of the percentage of Oklahoma City grew up with either
- 1:35Speaker 1: grandparents or single parent homes. The high school we went
- 1:38Speaker 1: to was note percent African American souls as a black
- 1:42Speaker 1: school on the side of town that was predominantly black.
- 1:46Speaker 1: That's key. That's key. And uh, because I wanted to
- 1:49Speaker 1: tell you a little bit about Julius the man and
- 1:52Speaker 1: who he was as a young man coming through high school.
- 1:55Speaker 1: So his mental capacity, Judas was one of these special
- 1:59Speaker 1: dudes where he had this unique mental ability. What I
- 2:04Speaker 1: mean by that, he was one of the first of
- 2:06Speaker 1: two African American mayorals to graduate the top ten per
- 2:10Speaker 1: cent of our class in high school. I was the
- 2:12Speaker 1: other one. So we were we were lucky, uh to
- 2:15Speaker 1: be able to garners our academic side. And then we
- 2:19Speaker 1: were both were basketball players as well, so that was
- 2:21Speaker 1: a unique dynamic, dynamic because I'm building this feature of
- 2:25Speaker 1: how much character, Julius asked, His foundation is background, his values,
- 2:31Speaker 1: his work at it right, and kind of where we
- 2:34Speaker 1: are now. So coming out of high school, he is
- 2:37Speaker 1: a full academic scholarship recipient at the University of Oklahoma.
- 2:42Speaker 1: In the back in the nineties, if you don't know
- 2:43Speaker 1: about everybody knows oh you football? Right, So back in
- 2:47Speaker 1: the nineties, the demographies of Oh You was almost ninety
- 2:51Speaker 1: fi per sein white. Only African American people on campus
- 2:55Speaker 1: was football and basketball players. Julius Jones was one of
- 2:58Speaker 1: the first to get an engineering a major scholarship, So
- 3:01Speaker 1: he was breaking the mold right for something that wasn't
- 3:04Speaker 1: even being done at the time. So it kind of
- 3:07Speaker 1: shows you the character and the medical passages this brother had.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So it goes to OU, I go off to Grandma
- 3:13Speaker 1: State University, play college ball down there were reconnected in
- 3:18Speaker 1: and he noticed I noticed that he started hanging around
- 3:20Speaker 1: a dude. We went to high school by the name
- 3:23Speaker 1: of Christopher Jordan's we called the west Side. Now west
- 3:26Speaker 1: Side was the exact opposite of me and Julius. He
- 3:30Speaker 1: comes from a different background, raised boas groundball, want to
- 3:34Speaker 1: be game banger. So really, me, Julius west Side, I
- 3:38Speaker 1: really didn't have nothing to come besides basketball, so I
- 3:42Speaker 1: better to be kind of odd that west Side and
- 3:45Speaker 1: Julie started hanging around a little bit. Um. I didn't
- 3:48Speaker 1: think too much of it because we were again playing
- 3:51Speaker 1: ball into some of the Rex centers and things like that.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So as we got long into the summer of nine
- 3:58Speaker 1: on July twenty, right, I'm sitting at home watching the
- 4:02Speaker 1: news and come across the news that this white gentleman
- 4:05Speaker 1: by the name of Paul Howell gets murdered and mun Oklahoma.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I want to build a pixel real quick, a little
- 4:11Speaker 1: bit about what Edmund, Oklahoma looked like, which is the
- 4:13Speaker 1: suburb of Oklahoma City. Back then, it was more predominantly white.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So the mantra in that particular city was a white
- 4:22Speaker 1: guy gets killed. Oh, it's probably gotta be a black
- 4:25Speaker 1: guy who did it, right, That was the mantra back then.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So bat media was going crazy, We're looking for a
- 4:32Speaker 1: black suspect, even though the fact wasn't even really point
- 4:35Speaker 1: to a black person. It was because not a murder
- 4:38Speaker 1: in him, and it's got to be a black suspect. Right.
- 4:41Speaker 1: So so things went down and a few days later,
- 4:46Speaker 1: Christopher Jordan's gets apprehended. And then you know how the
- 4:50Speaker 1: system is, right, when the first one gets to talk,
- 4:54Speaker 1: some crazy stuff starts to happen, right, So they get
- 4:57Speaker 1: to Christopher Jordan's first, you start squilling our distric attorney
- 5:01Speaker 1: in town about Macy brought off the bast city, whoever
- 5:04Speaker 1: is guilty for this death penalty rough off the bat.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So I think what happened was, you know, west Side
- 5:09Speaker 1: got apprehended, he got scared, and he said, uh uh,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I was driving Julius show. So that's how Julius Jones
- 5:18Speaker 1: kind of got tied into this particular case, right, No
- 5:22Speaker 1: relations out of the scene, nothing like that, no evidence.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So it was really west Side that got scared tired
- 5:30Speaker 1: into it. And then while now we're sitting that trial, right,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and they are suited for the death pilty for Julius
- 5:37Speaker 1: west Side corroborating the story. We had a couple of
- 5:40Speaker 1: informants that also played a major role into the case
- 5:44Speaker 1: that we didn't even know what was part of the
- 5:47Speaker 1: ball game until we're sitting that trial. So you got
- 5:49Speaker 1: a guy by the name of Ladelle King and Kerbin Lotti.
- 5:52Speaker 1: These two in particular individuals had some other pending cases
- 5:56Speaker 1: on their own that we didn't know as a family
- 5:59Speaker 1: that was playing a tree with the factor about them
- 6:01Speaker 1: being an informant. So all these side deals was going
- 6:04Speaker 1: on behind the curtains and we didn't even know. We
- 6:06Speaker 1: didn't even know. So one major point that changed the
- 6:09Speaker 1: diamond of the case before we were the trials that
- 6:12Speaker 1: our original trial attorney passed away. You had a heart attack,
- 6:16Speaker 1: So a couple of months before trial, boom, he's gone.
- 6:19Speaker 1: We spent some money, so our last resource was to
- 6:22Speaker 1: get a public defender. Right, so we go to trial.
- 6:25Speaker 1: These two particular public defenders. Guess what, It's their first
- 6:30Speaker 1: ever death road case, no experience. One was straight out
- 6:33Speaker 1: of law school. Right. So now we've got the highest
- 6:37Speaker 1: profile case in Oklahoma County and probably twenty years, and
- 6:40Speaker 1: we have rookies as our as our defense. Uh. That
- 6:45Speaker 1: was that was strange and unique. Right, and de vibe
- 6:47Speaker 1: in the courtroom was you got an all white jury
- 6:50Speaker 1: at the time, right white sells rights prosecuted. Everybody looked
- 6:55Speaker 1: different than us. Uh. That was my first time being
- 6:58Speaker 1: exposed to the system. You read about it, you saw
- 7:00Speaker 1: it on TV, But when you're sitting in it, you're like, hey,
- 7:03Speaker 1: this is uh, this is not like TV, right, this
- 7:07Speaker 1: is this is totally different. This is like really at
- 7:12Speaker 1: the moment where they're gonna decide that they're gonna try
- 7:15Speaker 1: to put my bester into death, and he wasn't even
- 7:17Speaker 1: tied to the case. So they wasn't even tied to
- 7:21Speaker 1: the case. Yeah, you know, all the all the build
- 7:25Speaker 1: up for how they were trying to tie Julius into
- 7:27Speaker 1: it was miraculous within itself. We were very confused of
- 7:32Speaker 1: how we even got to that point because their preparation
- 7:36Speaker 1: was really all about west Side, right, trying to corroborate Julius.
- 7:41Speaker 1: So we were like, uh so west Side of all
- 7:43Speaker 1: these details and stuff, don't you think west Side really
- 7:48Speaker 1: has something to do with it? Right? And now Julius
- 7:51Speaker 1: So that was kind of strange. So the proceedings starting court,
- 7:54Speaker 1: our public defender on our time when we had to
- 7:57Speaker 1: make our defense, doesn't impossible, mindful. Bob Mason, the county
- 8:02Speaker 1: district attorney, spent two or three days providing why Julius
- 8:06Speaker 1: was guilty. So now we final out had I chanced
- 8:08Speaker 1: to make our presentation, guess what this guy does. He
- 8:11Speaker 1: stands up and says, uh, we rest our case. We're like,
- 8:17Speaker 1: we're like, wait a minute, no no evidence. You didn't
- 8:19Speaker 1: call judas to the standing. They called me the family.
- 8:22Speaker 1: You didn't even provide pictures about what the shooter looked
- 8:26Speaker 1: like by Paul House sister, you didn't even you didn't
- 8:30Speaker 1: even do that. So we were like, you know how
- 8:34Speaker 1: you take a little air balloon, you live the area.
- 8:39Speaker 1: That's what it felt like in the court, like we
- 8:41Speaker 1: were watching live and direct right this system in our defense,
- 8:47Speaker 1: put on no defense, and then there are about to
- 8:50Speaker 1: make a decision to try to put my best friend
- 8:53Speaker 1: to death.
