- 0:31Yes, yes. What's going on, world? It's your man, Buddy Ramik,
- 0:33and we are back at each other with another episode, the Yeah, Buddy podcast.
- 0:38You know how we do every episode. I like to bring one of my friends from the
- 0:41movie business or the comedy world, and we sit down, chop it up,
- 0:44talk about our adventures, our journey in the entertainment business.
- 0:48And this episode is like no other. So if you're a first-time listener,
- 0:50thank you for tuning in. If you're a returning friend, hey, yo, welcome back.
- 0:54This episode, we got my good friend. We worked on a bunch of movie sets together,
- 0:58but I think our first official introduction to each other was working on a commercial with Kevin Hart
- 1:04and Steph Curry and stuff like that, but she's worked on TV shows with Ted Danson,
- 1:0813 Reasons Why, a whole bunch of other stuff.
- 1:11Jaxi, but she's going to get into it right now, stuff like that,
- 1:14y'all. But right now, I want y'all to make it live, make it live for my good friend, Mrs.
- 1:17Rachel Thurow in the building, y'all. Thank you, Rachel, for tuning in and sitting
- 1:21down with the Yeah, Buddy podcast. How you doing?
- 1:23Today oh i'm doing good i'm exhausted
- 1:26i listen to it all the time obviously we work together
- 1:30and it was kind of have the same sense of humor and
- 1:33so i know when i see you on set it's going
- 1:36to be a fun time do you
- 1:39like get into acting let's start with that for the for the for everybody let's
- 1:44say how did your journey into the acting and and the movie business start so
- 1:50i wanted to be in movies and TV shows and commercials since I was a gang where,
- 1:55you know, my mom was like.
- 1:57Ah, you know, we're going to do music, they're older, you can get into acting.
- 2:00But I grew up a very musical child. And so I played the violin, that kind of stuff.
- 2:05And so I ended up maybe about seven or eight years ago, started to finally take
- 2:13acting classes and improv and did all that stuff here in Santa Rosa.
- 2:17And one of my mentors was like, you know, you should really check out the casting
- 2:22calls for 13 reasons why.
- 2:24Because even if you go in as a background, you'll get to know how sets work,
- 2:28how the actors work, and it should be a pretty good experience.
- 2:32And I know usually people either hate being background or they absolutely love it.
- 2:36And so clearly I absolutely love it. And so my first just kind of getting my
- 2:41foot wet was basically season three of 13 Reasons Why,
- 2:46and my very first scene, which there's kind of a punchline to it,
- 2:50but basically I was in Monet's Cafe, and the whole thing was sitting around the table.
- 2:57And one of my first moves around was whenever they called background,
- 3:01I had to get up and get a cup of coffee.
- 3:03And so literally when it came time for premiere night, I was so excited.
- 3:08I was telling all my friends with the whole cast, you've got to watch it.
- 3:11I'm in it. It's amazing. It's going to be so rad.
- 3:14They didn't show me probably because I was like with my cup of coffee walking
- 3:19around you know not just like acting and so.
- 3:23A piece of me did show up it was my purse
- 3:26on the back of the chair so that was
- 3:29also my first kind of like foray into you may
- 3:32be in this movie but that's not a promise you're going to get shown
- 3:35so but it was such a good experience and so
- 3:38off and on season three season four like
- 3:41at one point the casting agent and also wardrobe
- 3:44mama d was like damn you're really in this like whole 13 reasons world like
- 3:50world you're just like everywhere so it was it was pretty sick i i miss it times
- 3:55i think that's always funny especially like when this your first time like being
- 3:59on a movie because i had the same experience like when i first was doing like
- 4:02background work you're like,
- 4:03my first experience of like oh you're not just because you're in front of the
- 4:07camera doesn't mean you you're getting camera time and stuff like that and it's
- 4:11always it's always funny it's always embarrassing because you're so happy you're
- 4:13so excited and you always like you always You're going to bring,
- 4:16like, your friends, your family.
- 4:17You go, like, I had a big old watch party for, like, the first movie I was in.
- 4:22It was, like, some small independent movie called, like, Left and Loose to the Lot.
- 4:26And, like, at the premiere, like, I was in the movie. Yeah. But then when it
- 4:30got released on, like, DVD, like, the scene got cut out. So, like, I didn't know.
- 4:34And they're like, yeah, we have this big old watch party at my house.
- 4:36And, like, the scene that I was supposed to, like, it goes, it skips right over
- 4:39where I was supposed to be in. You know, it's just all like, gosh.
- 4:43I just left. I just left. Yeah.
- 4:48And then so like working on 13 repeats Netflix I'm gonna
- 4:52be all over the show yeah yeah yeah
- 4:55it's like yeah just switch your
- 4:58eyes and shit like that but working on exactly I'm sorry I'll say working on
- 5:0613 reasons why that was your first time that's how you became SAG part of and
- 5:13partly from Jaxi and And so in the middle of,
- 5:17I want to say, season four, starting more SAG vouchers.
- 5:19And so I got two from them, and then I ended up getting from me.
- 5:23And so once you have four, you have to join SAG. You know, you're a muster. That's what I did.
- 5:29Looking back later, or if I had to do it all over, get a non-union just a little
- 5:35bit longer, try to act in more, you know, maybe student films or,
- 5:40you know, something along those lines just to kind of get my chops up a little bit better.
- 5:43But, you know, it is what it is You can't go back,
- 5:48You can always do the one thing that people That the union hates that It's still all.
- 5:56But you've got a lot of Yeah, I've considered A lot of work though A lot of work,
- 6:02Yeah, I've been, you know, after 15 Reasons Why I came to the Bay Area, I was submitting for.
- 6:09And it was like, well, I'm kind of afraid to do like other stuff,
- 6:13like to actually go to the city and, you know, meet other people and things like that.
- 6:18And then, you know, once I was out of my shell, I'm like, what the heck was I waiting for?
- 6:22And so my first opportunity was Jaxi, and I found out how cool that was.
- 6:27And obviously on Jaxi, we're also from 13. and so
- 6:30you're bound
- 6:34to know at least one person one actor or you
- 6:37know a bunch of crew something like that and so i've
- 6:40yet to have like a like a
- 6:43bad time on set to be honest and if you do that's what
- 6:46your kindle is for or your phone yeah yeah
- 6:49yeah there's too much there's too much to do for you to have
- 6:52a bad time like on a set and like one thing i was gonna
- 6:55say like with like 13 reasons why because like
- 6:57i missed that whole 13 reasons like paying
- 7:01and stuff like that i don't know why like i just felt like i don't
- 7:04know what i was doing at the time i mean i'm still active but i was doing a lot like just
- 7:07do a lot of standard work and stuff like that but i noticed there was definitely
- 7:11a huge pipeline and just a whole family that kind of like sprung like everybody
- 7:16like everybody who you see playing like a major part now like on these film
- 7:21sets whether it's crew or even some of the actors and stuff like that,
- 7:25they all kind of came from that 13 Reasons Why branch.
- 7:28Because even like Devin, when you see Devin out there doing his AD work or whatever
- 7:33it is on crew and shit like that, it's crazy. Right.
- 7:40It is. It is. And I'm about 13.
- 7:43Everything I know about the biz, even the tops of that wardrobe will like what I'm wearing.
- 7:51Exactly what expression to have it was literally
- 7:54the best teaching set ever because they knew these kids were so
- 7:57green and they knew who was coming on in norcal was maybe
- 8:01you know a newbie and they didn't know how to act on
- 8:04set and so they would give us these emails with almost like a booklet of what
- 8:08to expect what to do what to bring and almost how to act not just like how to
- 8:14act on screen and like smile or pose or whatever like that but like you know
- 8:18you're a professional now You can't talk on set, like,
- 8:21you know, while they're rolling and stuff. It was, I kept a few of them.
- 8:25Them and i still like to go back and go damn because they
- 8:28didn't have to do that but to make
- 8:31everybody's lives easier and i think a lot of people that would pay attention
- 8:36to those rules they would go and oh my gosh this is so funny i don't know if
- 8:40you know marcy she's like a little petite woman i would say she's probably upper
- 8:4550s yeah he was one of the main pas on third,
- 8:51the first day, I didn't know not to touch anything.
- 8:54Not that I was like feeling all the props and stuff, but I, without even thinking,
- 8:58since I was seated on set near the door and I saw the crew coming back and forth
- 9:02like ladders and stuff, I would open the door for them or I would help them.
- 9:06And at the end of the first day, Marcy's like, hey, you know,
- 9:11don't, it didn't go unnoticed that you were extremely helpful.
- 9:13And I think that's why I kept getting booked and booked and booked and booked
- 9:16on that show because, you know, they knew I was either, I was just going to
- 9:22be helpful. I was going to pay attention.
- 9:23And, you know, whenever a PA would say something, I'd be like the little,
- 9:26you know, go for, okay, what do they say? What do they say?
- 9:30It's just, I've loved it so much. And I'm, I'm thankful to have that experience.
- 9:35Yeah. There's definitely that, that atmosphere of being on, like how you say,
- 9:38like, what should you kind of like stay like non-union or,
- 9:41you know, stay non-union a little bit longer, but like I said,
- 9:43one of the benefits that you get from consistently working on a professional
- 9:48set is you do develop that professionalism and you understand,
- 9:50you learn what it takes to move up in this business.
- 9:56Because you learn very quickly that being talented is the least important thing
- 10:03when it comes to being on a movie set.
- 10:05Because, I mean, even just being an extra amount, there's 30 of us, all of us are talented.
- 10:11You know what I mean? So it's definitely something that Being on a professional
- 10:16movie set That you learn What you learn.
- 10:20You may even learn that, hey, I don't got what it takes But you're just going
- 10:24to learn What it takes To get to that level,
- 10:28Absolutely, I was actually on set A couple years ago in Yosemite And they were
- 10:33filming a pilot And I actually even got a couple of lines And it was super Super
- 10:38cool But besides the point, one woman drive up.
- 10:42I think she was at least five hours away. And she decided to drive up. They had booked her.
- 10:47She lasted two hours. And she's like, this isn't for me. And she left.
- 10:51Frickin' you have sanity. And so...
- 10:55You know, it is something you realize. And I've seen people act very,
- 10:58very, like some of the extras act very, very badly on set, like back in 13 and
- 11:02on a couple of movie sets. And then I never saw them again.
- 11:05So people talk like in this business, you know, people talk in every business,
- 11:09but especially if you want to get consistent and work in this,
- 11:13they aren't going to hire someone who is like on his phone or,
- 11:16you know, do something while they're on set.
- 11:20Such a type of person keeps talking in all this stuff.
- 11:23Yeah, you definitely learned it. Yeah, you definitely learned what it
- 11:26takes to be because just just to be on a
- 11:28set like i mean like like if i
- 11:31if i don't have the business acumen to even like be
- 11:34a background extra man what do you think they gonna expect to trust me being
- 11:39on like a movie set on like the league the number one on the call sheet number
- 11:43two on the call sheet i'm all like come on now bro yeah never gonna happen yeah
- 11:50yeah so and And I've heard that there are some, you know,
- 11:54to be honest, I've never seen one of the lead actors lose it. I'm sure it happens.
- 11:59I'm sure there's been Christian Bale moments. But to this day,
- 12:03still, I'm yet to see an A-list actor lose it.
- 12:09You know, a couple of people kind of like laughed, just kind of like kept the
- 12:12tension, which is completely different. But I've never seen anyone.
- 12:15Oh, actually, no, that's not exactly true.
- 12:19I did see one But he's like A D-list actor And it was on 13 So I don't know
- 12:24If you want me To tell that story I'm not gonna cut it out But you can tell
- 12:28me I don't give a fuck It was pretty crazy So.
- 12:32Okay. Yeah. Cool. So the mom, I'm like blinking on her name right now,
- 12:38but she played Bryce Walker's mom.
- 12:40And on Desperate Housewives, she's amazing and just so freaking beautiful.
- 12:45So they gave her the option to direct one of the episodes.
- 12:49And so what she had to write, the boxing episode, the boxing match between Tony and like some rival.
- 12:54And this was in season four, I want to say.
- 12:57So anyway so she's directing she's freaking
- 13:00amazing everything's going smooth and she was giving
- 13:03notes to this one other actor and
- 13:06he okay he ended up being tony's boxing
- 13:10coat one of the cops he was kind of like sandy blonde hair not not the sheriff
- 13:15he's supernatural but this other lesser-known actor and i guess she was just
- 13:21like okay let's during the scene or you can try that and she's also an actor
- 13:25like she knows what she's talking about i looked at her and he's like
- 13:27i know what to do just leave me
- 13:30alone like super rude and a bunch of us were just like because we were in the
- 13:34first row and we were looking at him like hey you're a dick and it's like she's
- 13:38still getting jobs i haven't seen him since you know not a major character but
- 13:43he was definitely up there you know part of the show that kind of thing but i always,
- 13:49I don't know if he would have done that with anybody else, but just from the
- 13:53perception that I saw or the view that I saw, I was like.
- 13:57Dude, you're a straight-up asshole. That's so not cool.
- 14:03She's used to it. She's been in the business first, so she just kind of let
- 14:06it roll off. But I managed to lock eyes with her, and I just kind of shifted it nice.
- 14:12She was just like, what are you going to do?
- 14:15That was always super nice to everybody on set. yeah
- 14:18like so you're gonna run into those few people and stuff like that but you don't really
- 14:21get that up here like san francisco i think that's because
- 14:24most of our film sets like even if it is like like
- 14:27a big production like a marvel or like i said like a netflix show like the crew
- 14:31it's still kind of like gives you like that independent like it's like that
- 14:36feel of like i'm on an independent film set like it's like okay yeah we're working
- 14:40but it's it's a family type of thing or you know a very welcoming atmosphere to realize,
- 14:46it's not what you're going to get down in L.A.
- 14:49No. I've yet been on a film set in L.A.
- 14:53I've been on some really, really big production. Venom 2, Matrix 3,
- 14:57was it 3? It was 4. 3 or 4, Matrix 4. It was 4, yeah.
- 15:02It was 4, wasn't it? It was 4? Yeah. Or? It was 4.
- 15:07I can't remember if you did. Yeah, so that was like super, super rad.
- 15:11I just kind of see everyone off there and runners are off there and.
- 15:17You're right, in the office building. Yeah, that tall ass, on the 28th floor
- 15:21for no reason. They said, like, why are we up on this tall ass fucking building?
- 15:25Yes. That's right. We've been in so much stuff together. Yeah.
- 15:30I was thinking along those lines, too, because the Chase commercial refers to Fitzley Net. Mm-hmm.
- 15:36Yeah. And then, oh, my gosh, that commercial, the Wells Fargo one,
- 15:40where you were hit by the drone.
- 15:42Yeah, I got hit by the drone. Yeah, I got hit by...
- 15:45And I still ain't seen that commercial. It's terrible.
- 15:49Yeah. Yeah. That was funny. Yeah. We was going through our whole list of like.
- 15:52I haven't either. I was going to ask you. No, I still ain't seen that.
- 15:57I'll be trying to look for it. You can do whatever. I still want to see it.
- 16:01Yeah. But like, it's funny. Like if we were to go through like.
- 16:04We would go back and have like a movie marathon of like all the stuff that we was like.
- 16:08Like I'd have like all the movies that I was an extra in. And then you'd have
- 16:11all the movies that she was an extra in.
- 16:13And probably over like probably over
- 16:1450% of the movies we'd probably be in together. we just didn't know it.
- 16:19I'm guessing so. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 16:23Exactly. I know, because I usually all follow this just so I can look back.
- 16:28Yeah. Yeah. And so I'm sure your name is like on most of them.
- 16:32Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And then what were we just talking about before that?
- 16:36I lost my train of thought. But if not, we'll just skip over to the next subject.
- 16:39Okay, yeah, we'll just skip to the next subject.
- 16:42We'll come back to it, though. I don't know if I got my memory.
- 16:44But so anyways, like I said, we talked about,
- 16:47oh that's right we was talking about the like la work
- 16:50and stuff like that yeah like i've never been down to la like for work
- 16:53but like you said like working on the matrix and stuff like
- 16:56that like they bring like la crew up there
- 16:59okay you would just feel like just the type of
- 17:01the different type of energy that they bring and stuff like that i'm like
- 17:04man it's like that like i was like she's sweet yes yeah
- 17:09yeah it's crazy because it's like sometimes they'll use some
- 17:13of the norcal cruise and it's nice to see a familiar face but
- 17:16like the la cruise they don't know what we're all
- 17:19about and they don't yeah so yeah it's that like kind
- 17:22of tiny amount of oh gosh yeah yeah like you just walk up to one of the dudes
- 17:29you're like hey hello how you doing today yeah they like that the fit still
- 17:31like what do you mean how's my day going what do you what do you think how do
- 17:34you think my day i'm like oh my bad bro i was just trying to be polite my bad
- 17:38i'm gonna just i'm gonna leave you alone and shit, you know?
- 17:41But, I mean, the Matrizes have grown up anyway since then. It's like,
- 17:44you can't get me alone. Yeah.
- 17:48It's like, take that Dodgers count and get the F out.
- 17:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was like, no, see, Lakers, Lakers, I'm friends with you.
- 17:56Lakers fan, Lakers fan, I know. They're like, no, leave us alone.
- 17:59Leave me alone. Bye, man.
- 18:02I was like, my bad. They going online. 18 hours, 18 hour work days and shit
- 18:10like that. Just having to sleep in their cars.
- 18:12Yeah, I'd be pissed too. I'm like, leave me alone. Don't let us have my days going.
- 18:16They don't even know what the day is. Oh my gosh.
- 18:20Yeah, for sure. Yeah, we haven't had any super long days like that for a while.
- 18:26They've all kind of been pretty short. I think the longest so far has been about 20 days.
- 18:31Which i don't mind at all like i'll be there as long as you want me but i remember
- 18:35even on 13 or jacksy or some of the other ones i think the longest days so far
- 18:40on record for me is about 17 or 18 hours and that was actually the same boxing
- 18:45match on 13 and by the end we're just like,
- 18:50this is this is not fun anymore we're tired yeah like this is this has been
- 18:55a day yeah this has been a day, like, literally.
- 18:58I understand, like, we get paid a day room, but when we're 18,
- 19:03I'm like, no, this has been a day.
- 19:05And it's going to take up the next day because, boy, you get home,
- 19:08the only thing you're about to do is you're about to sleep.
- 19:11Depending on how long I've been on that set for, I don't know,
- 19:14but I'd be in bed for a while after being on the set.
- 19:18I don't know what it is, but I'd be like, damn, I don't do nothing.
- 19:21Don't do nothing. Just sit down and be on my tablet and talking to people all
- 19:24day. I'd be clutch after that.
- 19:27You don't understand yeah so true so true
- 19:30and what one thing
- 19:33might be kind of like in the first year even though he's kind of sometimes i'm
- 19:37still asks what time do you think no i'm
- 19:40on set we don't have yeah like punch
- 19:43cards like we don't have set time of you know it's just
- 19:47gonna be like an eight to five day like that does not exist and
- 19:50it's fine you know but it's like it's hard to plan
- 19:54stuff and it's so funny because back in the day ago when there was so much work
- 19:57like 18 19 and yeah
- 20:00not so much but it was the kind of thing where i would
- 20:03book like a day to go with friends you know like alex alexandra i would be like
- 20:10okay well we're gonna hang out i just got booked oh it's okay i just got booked
- 20:14too cool we're gonna get paid to hang out today yeah so that's been happening
- 20:18a little bit more now, which is with ice, too.
- 20:22Yeah. Hopefully work does start to bomb. Oh,
- 20:28yeah. I remember Wallbanger.
- 20:33Wallbanger was fun because we could talk about it because it's already filmed
- 20:38and stuff all like that, but that was the first time we ditched the movie set. We left.
- 20:44So for anybody that listed it right now that doesn't know what Wallbanger is, It's very horrible,
- 20:50cheesy Well, it's a novel But it was turned into a movie A rom-com or whatever
- 20:56you want to call it And it's produced and directed By Elon Musk's sister.
- 21:03Which says enough It was terrible It was terrible,
- 21:08Don't support us in this It was horrible You know that family don't get along
- 21:13Based on the budget for that movie He didn't want to give her a penny for that
- 21:18movie He said, hell no. Oh, my God.
- 21:21The food was horrible. It's like, who read that novel? I've never even heard it. It was so terrible.
- 21:30But the thing that also kind of is that at the end of the night,
- 21:33she wasn't picked up in a Tesla.
- 21:36It was something like Escalator or something. I'm like, I see. Yeah.
- 21:41She's like the rival or something like that. She's like, I'm driving.
- 21:44Matter of fact, she drove just to make sure no self-driving or nothing yet.
- 21:49That was it. But that was Yeah.
- 21:56That was bad And it's always bad when they make you Have holding outside Because
- 22:01it was so cold Yeah Yeah, that was only with you guys But it wasn't, yeah,
- 22:08Yeah, bring out the heaters And like Oh, consider it daddy-o Daddy-o,
- 22:15yeah And like when people say like we're sitting outside It's not like we're
- 22:18sitting outside like we're sitting in a driveway and on the street.
- 22:22You know, that was holding. The whole thing was just, they're like,
- 22:26it's one o'clock in the morning so I don't think nobody is going to be driving on this road.
- 22:31Yeah. No. No. They're like, y'all be fine.
- 22:34And then I remember the neighbor came over and he's like, what's going on here?
- 22:38And like, normally, you can't just have like any stranger on set,
- 22:43you know, no matter where the set is because they're in trouble.
- 22:47That they're like, oh, we're just shooting a movie. Come have some pizza.
- 22:52What kind of movie said it?
- 22:55That's code for.
- 22:59We didn't pay for no permits, so don't tell nobody.
- 23:03When they start off eating free food, that means we're doing something illegal. Don't tell nobody.
- 23:09Don't tell nobody. You're probably right.
- 23:13Don't tell no one about this horrible movie. This horrible movie.
- 23:17Don't Yeah, we don't have no insurance for this. This is just my friend's house. It's on.
- 23:24Yeah i think we're just towards yeah i remember you said you were watching it,
- 23:33on amazon and get through it oh how bad could it be maybe it's just one of those typical,
- 23:38romance you're not into those and stuff and then i'm like this is fucking terrible
- 23:43like this is this is so much worse i just shut it off i saw us and like that
- 23:50was it yeah yeah but movies like that is where I'd be is where I would argue
- 23:56that I'll be like, alright, Sag,
- 23:57like, y'all gotta do something because this shit, like, I know I can do this.
- 24:03If they're doing this, I can read this.
- 24:06I know I can do this. Oh, yeah.
- 24:09Yeah. Yes. Yes.
- 24:12I know, that's the thing. I wish there was more opportunity for us to have lines
- 24:17in movies and TV shows and commercials and all that.
- 24:21Because we don't They bring a lot more people out from LA,
- 24:26To do like the real Like all the coloring stuff But we don't get,
- 24:30A whole lot of opportunity to actually For much more than like a minor character
- 24:34Or like someone Who comes on screen for a couple second table Is ready you know
- 24:39that kind of thing So that is the kind of Thing I wish we did before,
- 24:45Yeah yeah I wonder well I don't wonder well because I'm ready for Board member
- 24:50and that's one of the reasons why I am running for these selections and stuff
- 24:53like that, just because, like, I mean, I don't know what I could do as far as, like, um.
- 24:59Was it, like, changes, rules, stuff like that, but just to figure out,
- 25:02like, why are things the way they are and stuff like that?
- 25:06Like, even if I can't change it, at least I understand why it is,
- 25:10like, the way it is and stuff like that, you know?
- 25:13But, yeah, like I said, I also think that it also has to do with the fact that
- 25:18we don't really have, like, all the main components for, like,
- 25:23to have, like, a thriving film industry up here.
- 25:26Like, we have all the components to make, like, a really good movie and stuff
- 25:29like that, you know, and all this other type of stuff.
- 25:31But, like, all the stuff, all the components that are happening down in L.A.
- 25:36For those actors to get those roles and then, you know, bring it up here.
- 25:39I mean, maybe we just don't have that type of access to that information.
- 25:43Maybe that's what we're missing as actors is that sort of information.
- 25:49And, you know, stop putting so much pressure on ourselves as actors.
- 25:52Like, oh, maybe I'm not, you know, is it my talent? Is it me? Is it da-da-da-da-da?
- 25:56It's like, no, maybe sometimes that's just the way the business is and shit.
- 26:01Yeah, I can totally understand that, too. Sometimes it is frustrating,
- 26:05though, to see casting calls on it and then send out emails with the same exact thing.
- 26:12And, you know, it's like I know the more the merrier and all that.
- 26:16But sometimes I wish because the casting agencies, they know us. They know what we can do.
- 26:20And sometimes I wish they would just reach out directly and go,
- 26:23hey, I'm being booked on so-and-so date. Yes, please book me.
- 26:27You know, sometimes it just gets a little bit like because there's so many right now.
- 26:31There's, like, almost 45 castings, I think, for all of us going on, like, right now.
- 26:36And so it's like, just pick us.
- 26:40Maybe that is the hierarchy. And, you know, maybe that is something that is
- 26:44going on to where, like, because people talk about, oh, there's a,
- 26:47I see on Facebook group stuff.
- 26:49Oh, there's a monopoly with the acting roles and stuff like that.
- 26:52Maybe that is something that's going on to where they're like,
- 26:55well, we only want, well, just give, you know, these certain amount of actors, you know, roles.
- 27:01You know and then you don't just bring up you
- 27:04know whoever it is stuff like as long as you make you know your movies
- 27:07here but i definitely feel like what we
- 27:09should do is like like how you say like like lock
- 27:14it up a little bit you know what i mean just that that like the access and information
- 27:18that people because people have so much information and access to like the things
- 27:21that we have going on like as as the uni like sitting out like just for like
- 27:25you know simple auditions or even like if they're doing mixers or, you know,
- 27:30networking mixers, oh yeah, let me, you know, invite, you know,
- 27:32some non-union people to see what's going on.
- 27:34I'm like, no, we gotta, you know, say if you don't want union members doing
- 27:37non-union work then we, you gotta cut off their access to like what it is that we do and really like.
- 27:43Like, you know, so even I say, hey, I'm pissed, but just like,
- 27:46hey, yo, just, just audition these people and then that's it.
- 27:51You know, make your choice from this small group of, you know,
- 27:54actors and then like I say,
- 27:55cut off the access ability to like you know how they
- 27:59how they join the union stuff like that like if we don't want if
- 28:02you don't want actors you know working off the
- 28:05card and stuff like that then you know you have
- 28:08to make joining the union that much harder because like if i if i'm getting
- 28:12if i get my union status from being the extra you know what i'm saying like
- 28:16okay that's well cool and all but like i was getting money all these other types
- 28:20of ways before so like why should it stop and not say that i don't I'm not saying
- 28:25that I do work off the carpet,
- 28:26but this could be the mind state of somebody who does.
- 28:29Like, I'm just trying to keep dreaming. I'm just trying to keep the hope alive, this shit.
- 28:34That's the thing that's kind of hardest for me, too, is because I see some of
- 28:38my friends who have literally working every single freaking day.
- 28:42Like one of my friends, Brian, he literally works probably five to six days
- 28:45a week, and he's non-union, and he's just making bank.
- 28:49And then I'm like, why the heck did I go SAG so early? Because I could have
- 28:53been possibly the same thing.
- 28:55I mean, obviously, maybe different roles, you know, that kind of thing.
- 28:58But it just, to me, it doesn't make sense to go SAG right away.
- 29:02If I could do FICOR, Especially during the pandemic I was thinking maybe I should
- 29:07go find core Because then you know you can work both But my manager wasn't so keen on the idea,
- 29:14I mean To be honest I haven't been through her So Yeah,
- 29:20But it's crazy Yeah I think it's also like I mean You got to kind of.
- 29:30Take it with both sides Like yeah we work You look at non-union work,
- 29:35they're working, they're working, they're working, but sad work, you get that exposure.
- 29:39I feel like we just got to educate, as far as the union actors go,
- 29:45educate them on the fact that there is a certain type of non-union work that
- 29:49you can do. You know what I'm saying?
- 29:52I mean, even technically for the aspect of doing this podcast,
- 29:54you know what I'm saying? Like, this is, I mean, if you want to be technical,
- 29:57this is a non-medium project.
- 29:58But it's not like, oh, flagging, you know, or whatever. Like,
- 30:01oh, take their card away for doing a fucking podcast interview.
- 30:05But, yeah, it's just about educating. It's also about educating and letting
- 30:08them know that, hey, yeah, don't be pigeonholed to the fact that,
- 30:11like, just because, you know, you're sad means that.
- 30:14I mean, there's some non-medium work that you can do, and that does pay.
- 30:17So, I mean, shit, I was hand-modeling. You know what I'm saying?
- 30:21You got to figure out how to get it somehow. Shit.
- 30:24Yeah, for sure. And I know whenever they're filming in Petaluma,
- 30:27I believe, or Santa Rosa, because there are, you don't need to be sad.
- 30:32Like, if you're sad, you can still work, even if it's a non-union set.
- 30:36I'm taking advantage of some of those.
- 30:39Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot up here, but, oh yeah,
- 30:41I jump on it. So, there's that.
- 30:45Yeah, because they're filming outside of the, the SAG zone.
- 30:48I have a different opinion on, I mean, I have a different, because I just feel
- 30:51like when they do that, because I end up standing work for like two of their
- 30:56movies because I know you're talking about like people out of Santa Rosa,
- 30:59like they just be doing that just to, you know, just to cut the budget and stuff.
- 31:02I mean, I get it, you know what I'm saying? But like I said,
- 31:04I think they, as an actor, I'll take it.
- 31:06I know that they're, I know that I'm working with them and, you know,
- 31:10I'm not getting paid when I should be getting paid, but I mean,
- 31:13but I guess I'm getting paid, you know, and that's just the kind of,
- 31:17the kind of balance that you got to juggle with being the actor out there.
- 31:20So I'm like, okay, okay, We did those little victories, you know what I'm saying?
- 31:25Yeah, and I totally get it.
- 31:28What were you saying? I haven't had a chance to be a stand-in yet.
- 31:32There's not a whole lot of stand-ins. People, like, literally as short as mine.
- 31:36Like, you know, there are obviously some realists out there,
- 31:40but they're also usually about 90 pounds when they're by height and so work.
- 31:45But I know one of my friends, I don't know if you know Mariana.
- 31:49She's a lot on 13 Reasons Why. She got to be the, she had it for one of the
- 31:56little boys on Matrix 4 and one of the sons.
- 31:59And I was like, damn, that would have been so fun to do to eat very slim,
- 32:02you know, and it just worked out.
- 32:06Yeah, no, if there was an opportunity, obviously being into cars,
- 32:09I've also done a lot of precision driving and I love the car bump.
- 32:13So that to me is also fun because it's like combining my two loves of cars and acting.
- 32:19Yeah let's get to that real quick before we do wrap up the wrap
- 32:23up of this episode because you know like a comedian i mean
- 32:25actors and stuff like that we should have our own separate side
- 32:28hobbies and stuff like that and you are a huge car enthusiast
- 32:32how how how does
- 32:35that like that those worlds combine and stuff like that with you doing
- 32:37the cars and then also being an actor
- 32:40i started just absolutely adoring
- 32:44cars when i was about five years old
- 32:47to pick out every single car like we'd be in you know going on a road trip or
- 32:51something with my parents and be like there's a Chevy you know but like actually
- 32:54naming what kind of cars they were and I found so when I met my boyfriend now
- 33:00a husband he was also very kind of was like a mechanic had his own Mustang shop.
- 33:07And so he kind of gave what you do with this is whatever
- 33:11you want to do you can run with this you can
- 33:14start building that and i'm like okay cool and so i got
- 33:17my first import back in
- 33:20the list and it was 90 integra and so based model and so i started souping that
- 33:25up and grow and grow and so during the pandemic i was like man i really want
- 33:30to get back into drag in kind of like the early 2000s a couple times with my
- 33:34car at the time but it was a working kind of a split shift at uh i.
- 33:40Hewlett Packard. So 2021, when they reopened the track, I was there literally
- 33:45every single Wednesday doing drag. I had built up my little Civic hatchback
- 33:50that you can see on my Instagram, the blue and yellow one. And it was just, it was so addictive.
- 33:55I love drag racing, but you don't get a whole lot. You're literally just for
- 34:00the quarter mile and that's it.
- 34:01And so I was like, you know what? I really want to start racing,
- 34:05like doing Sonoma Raceway, like the entirety thunder hill
- 34:09button willow like and from then it
- 34:12was just like holy moly this is so
- 34:15fun and since i was kind of like detailing all of
- 34:17this on instagram i started getting some sponsors and making really really good
- 34:22friends in the industry and now every year i'm offered free tires i'm offered
- 34:28like this i'm offered that and not as to say like they paid for the whole car
- 34:34because they didn't pocket.
- 34:35But it's so super nice being noticed and being respected.
- 34:40Fortunately, you know, if you're a woman in the auto industry,
- 34:45a lot of time at like, oh, she's just like a model next to her car.
- 34:48She doesn't actually drive or she doesn't work on her car.
- 34:51Work on my car and finally be respected on the track is like the best.
- 34:57The first year that I started track racing or doing track events.
- 35:02You know, nobody would talk to me, like absolutely no one.
- 35:05And I was usually maybe we're for women, if that.
- 35:09And I think the last time I went out for Thunder Hill West, I was literally
- 35:12the only woman on. Literally the first year, nobody spoke to me.
- 35:15The second year I was back out, then people started going, go,
- 35:18hey, man, yeah, I remember you from last year.
- 35:20And so that ended up being super, super cool. And then I would get the people
- 35:24that were putting these events together, like, hey, Rachel, come out here,
- 35:27I can give you a discount.
- 35:29And so that's like makes it even better because they weren't cheap either.
- 35:33Too expensive hobbies, acting and cars. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:37But it's been a blast, yeah.
- 35:40And then now that, like, you know, with all the commercials and the TV spots
- 35:44and the movies, stuff like that, do they treat you different now?
- 35:47Or do you tell people that? Do you tell them that? And do you show that to them?
- 35:52And do they treat you different?
- 35:54Oh, they do. They know. The first time I did Decision Dragon,
- 35:59they were impressed that, you know, number one, back up like a normal person,
- 36:04you know, that I could parallel park with no issues.
- 36:07And I have a couple of good, I call them my shareholders. Like Rick Perotta,
- 36:11he's always number one on the set to me.
- 36:14He's like, oh, you don't have to worry about Rachel. No, she knows what she's
- 36:17doing. She's the best precision driver in NorCal.
- 36:20And so he's like my leader.
- 36:22I used to show up a lot. Unfortunately, it's about to get sold, but with my FJ Cruiser.
- 36:27And, you know, that thing is this giant green lifted truck. And so I would pull
- 36:30up to set on that thing and the cruise would go, oh, my God,
- 36:35it's a monster truck. That thing is so cool.
- 36:38Cool and then they could see i could actually parallel it and all
- 36:41this stuff and then they would just like lose their minds all over again but
- 36:45yeah when i show up on set if they've never met
- 36:48me before they trust me so it's
- 36:51a good feeling okay awesome so i'm
- 36:55gonna wrap up this episode because the camera keeps on cutting out and stuff
- 36:57like that but no worries and stuff like that but before we
- 37:00do it out if you want to give people your social medias and let
- 37:03people know what do that coming up down the pipeline absolutely so
- 37:08my instagram is rachels r-a-c-h
- 37:12underscore spoon e-g and
- 37:16so that's it's friends acting that kind of thing
- 37:19i'm on tiktok gearhead chick and
- 37:22so that's when i do like walk arounds of cars maybe something
- 37:25cool driving by it's it's kind of like a
- 37:28little mishmash of everything but i think between the two you kind of get my
- 37:33personality pretty well and then a tube is r and d garage r for rachel d for
- 37:40d on my husband and so i like to teach people basically how to work on cars
- 37:44and get their hands dirty and it's not scary.
- 37:48Dope dope dope and so like yeah it's buddy rammy you follow me send it to watch
- 37:53it it says right there, YeahBuddyENT on all of my social medias.
