- 0:00Speaker 1: Less than a month to go before the NFL Draft.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Today we're breaking down the defensive backs, chat with Field
- 0:05Speaker 1: Yates and the latest Patriots news. Let's do it with
- 0:08Speaker 1: the dirty first thick the New England Patriots. What Welcome
- 0:16Speaker 1: everybody to Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light, Easy
- 0:19Speaker 1: to Drink, Easy to Enjoy, bud Light, the official beer
- 0:21Speaker 1: sponsor of the New England Patriots. And guys, we are
- 0:24Speaker 1: just under a month away from the Draft. We've been
- 0:26Speaker 1: plowing through these shows. They were gonna talk a little
- 0:28Speaker 1: about the defensive backs, but first I talk a little
- 0:31Speaker 1: latest news minor bit, Pauli. Josh Dobbs released him.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I saw this coming a little bit
- 0:37Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago when they decided to re
- 0:39Speaker 2: up Tommy DeVito, gave him a two year deal sort of,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you know, let him wet his beak a little bit.
- 0:44Speaker 2: That told me that they were comfortable with him as
- 0:46Speaker 2: the backup. Now, I didn't tell you exactly that Dobbs
- 0:49Speaker 2: is definitely out, but it did tell me that they
- 0:53Speaker 2: thought enough of Tommy DeVito that he could be the
- 0:55Speaker 2: main backup. I would expect something down the road, though.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Guys in terms of a developmental guy, whether it's sometime
- 1:02Speaker 2: in Day three of the draft or sometime soon, but
- 1:05Speaker 2: you need to probably need another arm to come in.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Of course that we already did our quarterbacks episode. We
- 1:10Speaker 1: named a few of them in that any anybody want
- 1:12Speaker 1: to bring.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Back, And well, I just I think it's an interesting
- 1:15Speaker 3: conversation of are you going for like a raw ceiling
- 1:21Speaker 3: kind of guy that's got some tools, that's got some athleticism,
- 1:24Speaker 3: you know, like a guy that Hayne's king comes to mind,
- 1:26Speaker 3: that that can maybe not even just play quarterback, but
- 1:29Speaker 3: maybe do the whole Taysom Hill thing and play a
- 1:31Speaker 3: little bit of offensive weapon, let's call it receiver. Or
- 1:35Speaker 3: are you really looking for who's going to be Drake
- 1:38Speaker 3: May's backup for the next ten years? You know, and
- 1:40Speaker 3: you're trying to go that route. But either way, whether
- 1:43Speaker 3: it's having a third arm and training camp an emergency
- 1:47Speaker 3: quarterback come game day, it makes a lot of sense
- 1:49Speaker 3: to carry three quarterbacks on the roster even into the season.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So to only have two quarterbacks under contract right now,
- 1:56Speaker 3: there's definitely at least one more quarterback coming so maybe
- 1:59Speaker 3: even too as a UDFA signing as well to get
- 2:02Speaker 3: to four to go into training camp because you don't
- 2:04Speaker 3: want to You don't want to get into a preseason
- 2:06Speaker 3: game where you have to play your top two quarterbacks
- 2:08Speaker 3: you know a lot, so you're you're going to have
- 2:10Speaker 3: another at least one more guy. But I am interested
- 2:13Speaker 3: to see which way they go in the draft in
- 2:15Speaker 3: terms of are they just looking for that steady backup,
- 2:19Speaker 3: you know, not to say anything bad about this, but
- 2:22Speaker 3: a Brian Hoyer perhaps or someone like that, or are
- 2:25Speaker 3: they looking for somebody that has a little bit more ceiling,
- 2:28Speaker 3: that has some raw athleticism too them.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Maybe you develop them, maybe he turns into an asset.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I mean, I always think it's good business to draft
- 2:33Speaker 1: quarterbacks generally. It seems like they have a need for them.
- 2:36Speaker 1: One more thing, I want to talk about the guys
- 2:37Speaker 1: Jackson Smith and j But just signed you know, a
- 2:39Speaker 1: huge deal, highest paid wide receiver now in the game
- 2:41Speaker 1: we saw in the Super Bowl how good. Well maybe
- 2:43Speaker 1: not specifically in the Super Bowl as much as he
- 2:45Speaker 1: did during the regular.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Season debate, but tis.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Uh, just again, the wide receiver market were reminded yet
- 2:51Speaker 1: again that these guys are very valuable and that NFL
- 2:54Speaker 1: teams once you find one. You better hang on to him.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I The dream is for the Patriots
- 2:59Speaker 4: to get a guy of that offensive side of the
- 3:01Speaker 4: ball to pay that right now, we got on the
- 3:03Speaker 4: defensive side of the ball. The price of the brick
- 3:04Speaker 4: keeps going up, so hopefully Gonzo's next. But the dream
- 3:07Speaker 4: is to get a receiver like JSN here. I don't
- 3:10Speaker 4: know what will happen, but that's the goal.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Well, we got a lot here on tap today.
- 3:14Speaker 1: First up, Thoughtist and Chris are gonna break down maybe
- 3:16Speaker 1: some prospects worth trading up for the Patriots in the
- 3:18Speaker 1: first round. I spoke with field Gates and then we
- 3:21Speaker 1: got a nice long breakdown of all the safeties and
- 3:23Speaker 1: cornerbacks it could possibly fit the Patriots.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Check it out, Chris. We usually talk about mocks here,
- 3:31Speaker 5: Yeah we do.
- 3:32Speaker 4: But that being said, we're gonna skip on the mock
- 3:34Speaker 4: drafts this segment and we're gonna go to mock trades.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Oh all right, Like I like trade here and there,
- 3:40Speaker 4: So I rot a little sheet here. I'm just going
- 3:42Speaker 4: through a couple scenarios that might happen. So, as we
- 3:45Speaker 4: all know, the Patriots have the thirty first pick, so
- 3:47Speaker 4: there's a lot you can do with that. So scenario one,
- 3:50Speaker 4: which I think is unlikely, but it's scenario.
- 3:53Speaker 5: It's there.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Trading up, right, We're at thirty one. What do you
- 3:57Speaker 4: think it would take? Like, Like, my thing is, if
- 3:59Speaker 4: you love a guy, example, Kenyan Sadik Oregan tight end,
- 4:03Speaker 4: if he's there twenty five, twenty seven, I don't think
- 4:07Speaker 4: he's gonna draft that far, but let's just say he's there.
- 4:09Speaker 6: Yeah, that guy's a dog.
- 4:10Speaker 7: He is, so like, what you do?
- 4:12Speaker 5: What do you do? If you're Wolf?
- 4:13Speaker 8: If I'm Elliot Wolf, I don't know if I'm trading
- 4:15Speaker 8: up in this draft, Okay, I really don't. I think
- 4:18Speaker 8: I think you either stay put try to get an
- 4:20Speaker 8: edge rusher. I think your main focus early on is edge. Again,
- 4:24Speaker 8: if you can trade up and maybe get like a
- 4:26Speaker 8: stud wide receiver, like I don't know, something out of
- 4:28Speaker 8: the ordinary that we wouldn't.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Fully express, which is way up there, way up there.
- 4:34Speaker 8: I think that's the that's the difference in that in
- 4:36Speaker 8: that category. But I mean, for Sadik, he's a great,
- 4:40Speaker 8: great tight end. I think you can still hold out
- 4:43Speaker 8: enough later in the draft for a solid tight end
- 4:46Speaker 8: in that category.
- 4:48Speaker 6: I personally like the trade down thought though, get to
- 4:52Speaker 6: the trade. But I'm getting I know, I know, I know.
- 4:54Speaker 4: So one more thing with the trade up is like,
- 4:56Speaker 4: what do you think would cost, because let's let's say
- 4:58Speaker 4: you're going to twenty seven.
- 5:00Speaker 5: I mean you're giving you're giving it up your second,
- 5:02Speaker 5: you're giving up your second.
- 5:03Speaker 8: Obviously, you're giving up your first, you're giving up your second,
- 5:05Speaker 8: and I mean maybe.
- 5:07Speaker 4: A fourth or you got a few fourths icy for
- 5:10Speaker 4: next year too, But next year a lot of talent.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I don't think we're gonna see a lot of those
- 5:15Speaker 4: ones moved for next year. Hence the hold up on
- 5:17Speaker 4: some of the trades this year.
- 5:19Speaker 8: Right, I just I just don't think logistically it makes
- 5:22Speaker 8: a lot of sense for the Patriots to move up
- 5:24Speaker 8: right now, especially with where they're kind of sitting and
- 5:27Speaker 8: who they're looking for.
- 5:28Speaker 6: I think there will still be guys available.
- 5:30Speaker 8: Kind of either where they are or if they were
- 5:32Speaker 8: to go back into early second round type.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Of we'll get there, Chris, don't worry, I gotcha, all right.
- 5:38Speaker 4: So that's I think we can agree that's the most unlikely. Yes,
- 5:41Speaker 4: all right, So we got scenario two trading for a
- 5:44Speaker 4: proven vet, all right, So we we saw the murmurs
- 5:49Speaker 4: of AJ Brown. It kind of seems like the first
- 5:51Speaker 4: round picks the hold up, which it should be eighty
- 5:53Speaker 4: Brown's up there. But listen, you you're a Pats fan
- 5:56Speaker 4: like me. We've been hurt a lot by these by
- 5:58Speaker 4: these prospects. You know, everyone turns out to be Drake
- 6:01Speaker 4: mayor Christian Zalez.
- 6:02Speaker 6: True.
- 6:03Speaker 4: That being said, if there's a vet out there, you
- 6:05Speaker 4: have a need. I'm just throwing a name out there.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Budda Baker, safety Cardinals. I think he's twenty nine to thirty.
- 6:11Speaker 4: I don't know if i'd give the first up for him,
- 6:13Speaker 4: but you know it's an option.
- 6:16Speaker 8: No, it is, for sure. I mean a guy like
- 6:18Speaker 8: Buddha Baker. You kind of have that in Kevin Bider enough.
- 6:20Speaker 8: So that's why way different play style, way different play style.
- 6:23Speaker 6: But you kind of no, I know you didn't, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 6: but you are talking about a guy like A J. Brown.
- 6:28Speaker 5: Yep.
- 6:29Speaker 8: Do you have fully what it's worth for him? At
- 6:31Speaker 8: least with this year's picks. I think you're gonna be
- 6:34Speaker 8: looking at next year's picks. Got it more importantly, especially
- 6:36Speaker 8: with the upcoming draft and the importance of next next
- 6:38Speaker 8: year's draft. But I think if we're just talking about
- 6:42Speaker 8: the sake of A J. Brown's trade scenario, I think
- 6:46Speaker 8: the Patriots are going to give up a first most
- 6:49Speaker 8: likely you're going to give up a third.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Maybe you're locked in on the first. Yeah, I don't
- 6:55Speaker 4: know if the first is in play.
- 6:57Speaker 6: I do.
- 6:57Speaker 8: I actually do think that first, that first round pick
- 7:00Speaker 8: is in play for the Patriots trying to get a J.
- 7:02Speaker 6: Brown. But you know, I just think bigger picture here.
- 7:08Speaker 8: I think you need to protect your picks because you
- 7:11Speaker 8: don't want to be I don't know. I don't want
- 7:12Speaker 8: to say careless, but yeah, you know you want to
- 7:14Speaker 8: be cautious.
- 7:15Speaker 4: This is the nucleus of your franchise, right, Okay, all right,
- 7:19Speaker 4: So I was team trade the pick for a Vet,
- 7:22Speaker 4: but as stuff has fallen into place, I don't know
- 7:25Speaker 4: if that's the move anymore. When I say a VET,
- 7:27Speaker 4: I mean like I'm shooting for the stars here. You know,
- 7:29Speaker 4: you don't have thinking Jettas that's Evan would tell me
- 7:33Speaker 4: to shut up. So we're going to scenario number three,
- 7:35Speaker 4: which is the one you want, which is trading back,
- 7:37Speaker 4: which the Patriots have done before.
- 7:39Speaker 5: I mean they did it in uh twenty twenty two.
- 7:41Speaker 5: They trade back.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Yeah, got cold strange, So we're not afraid to do
- 7:44Speaker 4: that as a franchise. So that being said, what can
- 7:48Speaker 4: you get? Like I ran a couple mocks of in
- 7:51Speaker 4: the mock draft simulator of what a trade would look
- 7:53Speaker 4: like with the thirty first So the first one I
- 7:54Speaker 4: had was Carolina for the thirty first pick offered their second,
- 7:59Speaker 4: their third, and a twenty twenty seven to fifth. The
- 8:02Speaker 4: Chargers offered their second, their third at twenty twenty seven
- 8:05Speaker 4: to fourth and sixth, and the Giants offered their second
- 8:08Speaker 4: and a twenty twenty seven to fourth. So kind of
- 8:10Speaker 4: seems like a game two picks plus some next year.
- 8:13Speaker 4: You just got away how high up your second is
- 8:16Speaker 4: because you're obviously your own seconds further back in the
- 8:18Speaker 4: second round.
- 8:18Speaker 8: It is, it is, And I mean I think that's
- 8:20Speaker 8: the thing though, Like you use that first round pick
- 8:23Speaker 8: and you're flexing out to try to get more either
- 8:27Speaker 8: earlier in the second at least one earlier in the
- 8:29Speaker 8: second and one earlier in the third my opinion, because
- 8:32Speaker 8: again you don't want to lose its value necessarily, But
- 8:36Speaker 8: I do think there's enough guys, especially at the edge
- 8:41Speaker 8: rusher position, that if you were to trade back and pick,
- 8:44Speaker 8: so you're picking sixth in the second.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Round, yep.
- 8:47Speaker 8: I think there's still value. You could still get the
- 8:49Speaker 8: guy that you're kind of looking forward to.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Percent Let's say hypothetically Casey conceptions at thirty one. Okay,
- 8:55Speaker 4: just the stays there and some team picking high up
- 8:59Speaker 4: in the seconds, like, let's up, they don't take him.
- 9:01Speaker 4: There's a chance he could keep slipping, and then you boo,
- 9:04Speaker 4: you got two seconds.
- 9:05Speaker 5: The only thing, the only thing the shipping is with
- 9:07Speaker 5: the first you get the fifth round option, which is
- 9:09Speaker 5: obviously valuable. I'm team.
- 9:11Speaker 4: If you like the guy and this is your guy,
- 9:12Speaker 4: take him, especially in the first he gets the But.
- 9:15Speaker 6: If you're confident, go with But if in your in your.
- 9:19Speaker 8: World, yeah you talk about Casey Concio being there at
- 9:22Speaker 8: thirty one, right, yeah, you trade back and he still
- 9:24Speaker 8: keeps falling, and then you get message or and concepcion.
- 9:28Speaker 8: You got an edge wide receiver. I'll see you later,
- 9:32Speaker 8: I'll see you next time.
- 9:33Speaker 4: So, so if we rank these scenarios, which one what's first?
- 9:37Speaker 8: I think you know what my favorite scenario is trade
- 9:39Speaker 8: trading back.
- 9:40Speaker 2: If they sit sit yep.
- 9:43Speaker 6: If you're not gonna sit, don't move up.
- 9:45Speaker 8: Okay, I think trade Bass as a dog there, get right,
- 9:48Speaker 8: but collect more picks, more value picks, because right now
- 9:52Speaker 8: the Patriots have one pick in the first round, office, yeah,
- 9:55Speaker 8: one pick in the second round, one pick in the
- 9:56Speaker 8: third round. They have a couple of fourths, and they
- 9:59Speaker 8: got a bunch of so I think something needs to
- 10:03Speaker 8: happen with the sixth round picks. Sort of a long day.
- 10:05Speaker 8: Thanks working your way up a little bit with those
- 10:09Speaker 8: eight six round picks. You have none, not literally, but
- 10:12Speaker 8: you know you've got to make some sort of adjustment there.
- 10:14Speaker 8: I think you have enough leverage, especially in the fourth
- 10:17Speaker 8: round picks and six round picks.
- 10:19Speaker 6: Kind of work something up. Keep trading up in the draft.
- 10:22Speaker 8: I don't know if it's necessarily going to involve that
- 10:24Speaker 8: first round pick trade scenario or second round pictures now,
- 10:27Speaker 8: we don't know. But if they're going to move from
- 10:30Speaker 8: that first round, I think they move back collect more
- 10:33Speaker 8: second round picks, potentially a second and a third. Kind
- 10:36Speaker 8: of add more to the sweetened the pot a little bit,
- 10:38Speaker 8: even though you're going a little bit further back in
- 10:40Speaker 8: the draft.
- 10:41Speaker 5: All right, guys, thanks for tuning in this segment. See
- 10:44Speaker 5: on the next one.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Are you reciting now? To be joined by Field Gates
- 10:49Speaker 1: from ESPN to break down the Patriots offseason here, a
- 10:52Speaker 1: little bit of free agency, a little bit of look
- 10:53Speaker 1: forward to draft. Field, Thanks for taking the time here
- 10:56Speaker 1: to hop on with.
- 10:57Speaker 7: Me, no problem is glad to be with you today.
- 11:00Speaker 1: So let's just start off with free agency. You know,
- 11:02Speaker 1: Patriots seemed like a lot of one for one moves,
- 11:04Speaker 1: you know, digs out, dobs in, et cetera. Out Just
- 11:08Speaker 1: what were your impressions here of the Patriots moves to
- 11:10Speaker 1: the early part of free agency.
- 11:12Speaker 9: Yeah, well said, and you could take it a step
- 11:14Speaker 9: further with moves like Draymond Jones in Calebon Chase On out.
- 11:19Speaker 9: They play a different style of game, but still guys
- 11:21Speaker 9: that you expect to be or in the case of
- 11:23Speaker 9: Chase on was a starter, a very solid starter for
- 11:26Speaker 9: them at that he was especially great down this direction
- 11:28Speaker 9: in the playoffs. Draymond Jones to expect to be a
- 11:31Speaker 9: starting edgereusher for this franchise as well, based off the familiarity,
- 11:35Speaker 9: the skill sets, and also the money, which is always
- 11:37Speaker 9: a good thing to follow during free agency. So it
- 11:39Speaker 9: feels like an off season that I feel like there's
- 11:43Speaker 9: more to be done, and that what I mean by
- 11:45Speaker 9: that is it feels like the Patriots still have some
- 11:48Speaker 9: cards left to play, and that's not just the draft,
- 11:51Speaker 9: it's other ways, other levers to pull to continue to
- 11:54Speaker 9: improve this roster. Obviously, it's in very good shape there
- 11:57Speaker 9: at the Super Bowl this past season, but there are
- 11:59Speaker 9: couple of items on the to do list that I
- 12:01Speaker 9: think this team is going to still look to address.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Well, one of those items could it be AJ Brown?
- 12:06Speaker 1: I mean, there's just so much talk. I mean, Patriots
- 12:08Speaker 1: fans have been talking about AJ Brown forever. We've been
- 12:11Speaker 1: doing this dance for a couple of years.
- 12:13Speaker 7: Now.
- 12:13Speaker 1: It feels now they're saying maybe after June first, what
- 12:16Speaker 1: are your thoughts on that whole potential coming to fruition? Finally,
- 12:19Speaker 1: AJ Brown to the Patriots?
- 12:21Speaker 6: Is it real? Yeah?
- 12:22Speaker 9: I think where I've landed with AJ Brown is that
- 12:25Speaker 9: until either he comes out himself and publicly commits to
- 12:29Speaker 9: wanting to be a Philadelphia Eagle for twenty twenty six
- 12:33Speaker 9: and beyond, or until we get to the start of
- 12:35Speaker 9: the regular season, I'm going to believe there's a real
- 12:38Speaker 9: possibility that he has traded. There's just been so much
- 12:41Speaker 9: speculation and so much smoked, and from some of the
- 12:44Speaker 9: top insiders in the game. My colleague Adam Schefter has
- 12:48Speaker 9: been talking about the possibility of an aj Brown trade
- 12:51Speaker 9: and certainly made it seem like that is still in play.
- 12:54Speaker 9: He's referenced to the Patriots or one of the teams
- 12:55Speaker 9: is still right logical landing spot perhaps, at least in
- 12:59Speaker 9: my estimation, the most logical landing spot for age A
- 13:03Speaker 9: after June first.
- 13:04Speaker 7: And I think probably most.
- 13:05Speaker 9: Viewers and listeners of this program already know this, But
- 13:08Speaker 9: after June first, who becomes a lot more palatable from
- 13:10Speaker 9: a salary cap standpoint for Philadelphia to trade away a
- 13:15Speaker 9: A Brown.
- 13:15Speaker 7: So that's a long.
- 13:17Speaker 9: Time to have to wait still two and a half
- 13:19Speaker 9: more months from when you and I are talking right now.
- 13:22Speaker 9: But for a player of this caliber and for a
- 13:24Speaker 9: deal that would most likely involve draft capital, you can
- 13:28Speaker 9: wait until June seconds to have a guy that would
- 13:31Speaker 9: immediately give the Patriots their best offensive weapon for Drake
- 13:35Speaker 9: May to distribute the football Tube.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Just one more question for you feel about the offense.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I felt like this was a real Josh McDaniels kind offense.
- 13:41Speaker 1: You know, we see Reggie Gilliam come over from the Bills.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Josh Gatt got to have his fullback. You know, he
- 13:46Speaker 1: takes a little bit of a chance on on Vera
- 13:48Speaker 1: Tucker who's had some injuries but has a high upside.
- 13:51Speaker 1: It seems to me, you know, you've got to get
- 13:52Speaker 1: a blocking tight end there. From Miami as well, it
- 13:54Speaker 1: seems like they really are focused on maybe building the toughness,
- 13:57Speaker 1: the physicality. Short yardage was in an issue for them
- 14:00Speaker 1: last year. And then you also bring in Dobbs. How
- 14:03Speaker 1: do you see that all coming together?
- 14:05Speaker 9: Yeah, I totally agree, especially on those first three players
- 14:08Speaker 9: that you reference, kind of the identity of what they
- 14:10Speaker 9: bring to the table. Reggie Gilliam, hard knows, excellent full back,
- 14:14Speaker 9: also great on special teams to help in that regard,
- 14:17Speaker 9: Julian Hale a name that I don't know how many
- 14:19Speaker 9: people knew a whole lot about. Julian Hill has got
- 14:22Speaker 9: a very interesting background prior to playing in the NFL.
- 14:25Speaker 9: But to your point, he is going to help the
- 14:27Speaker 9: running game as well, playing that very unique scheme in
- 14:30Speaker 9: Miami where he was on the move a lot and
- 14:32Speaker 9: carving out some paths for guys like Devon Chen who,
- 14:35Speaker 9: of course was excellent for Miami these past couple of seasons,
- 14:39Speaker 9: but short yardage has to be better. You know, there's
- 14:41Speaker 9: always this push pull when you've got a quarterback like
- 14:43Speaker 9: Drake May who can run the tush push and student
- 14:46Speaker 9: that stays in twenty twenty six and beyond, but also
- 14:50Speaker 9: a quarterback that you want to protect. And then beyond that,
- 14:52Speaker 9: you've got a player in Trayvon Henderson who we know
- 14:56Speaker 9: how electric Traybon is. He was unbelievable for stretches last season,
- 15:01Speaker 9: but his role decreased down the stretch and into the playoffs.
- 15:04Speaker 9: He feels like the kind of guy that's at his
- 15:06Speaker 9: best running between the tackles with somebody leading the way
- 15:10Speaker 9: for him. He's just not going to be this gigantic
- 15:13Speaker 9: power back. And Ramandre was great last season, especially down
- 15:17Speaker 9: the stretch. It was kind of the reverse of how
- 15:19Speaker 9: Trebon's impacts played out. But I think that both of
- 15:22Speaker 9: those guys will benefit from having a hammered head in
- 15:25Speaker 9: front of them.
- 15:25Speaker 7: Jack Westover gave them good snaps last season.
- 15:28Speaker 9: Jack much more of an angular blocker, the kind of
- 15:31Speaker 9: guy that's a factor in the passing, at least he
- 15:33Speaker 9: was during college, a factor in the passing game, but
- 15:36Speaker 9: not the kind of fullback that we have seen for
- 15:39Speaker 9: a lot of years for the Patriots with Josh McDaniel's
- 15:41Speaker 9: most recent versions include the likes of Yakub Johnson and
- 15:44Speaker 9: maybe Reggie Gillian can give you a.
- 15:46Speaker 7: Bit more of what yacht gave you for those years
- 15:48Speaker 7: in New England.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I love the yacht shout out, of course, love it.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Love our German Yako Johnson. But let's get let's get
- 15:53Speaker 1: in the draft, little bit field and this is weird.
- 15:55Speaker 1: We're last couple of years, you're talking top five picks
- 15:58Speaker 1: and it's going to be one.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Of two or three guys.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Now we're back to picking at the bottom of the
- 16:02Speaker 1: first round where you know, I always like that spot
- 16:04Speaker 1: a little bit because maybe something gets pushed down that
- 16:07Speaker 1: you weren't really expecting. Maybe it's not a huge need,
- 16:09Speaker 1: but there's a very talented player. I want to talk
- 16:11Speaker 1: about this edge class. It's still a huge need for
- 16:13Speaker 1: the Patriots. Every time I look at a mock draft,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I get down to a thirty first spot.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Who's the edge?
- 16:18Speaker 1: You know, it's either somebody has to slip through the
- 16:20Speaker 1: cracks or maybe you're reaching a little bit. Just what
- 16:22Speaker 1: are your general thoughts down there at thirty first overall
- 16:25Speaker 1: here in this draft.
- 16:26Speaker 9: Well, there's two ways in which this is trickier to
- 16:29Speaker 9: forecast for the Patriots in the past couple of years,
- 16:31Speaker 9: where it was picked three and then picked four, and
- 16:33Speaker 9: that third pick two years ago was especially easy when
- 16:36Speaker 9: it was going to be a quarterback and there were
- 16:38Speaker 9: three outstanding prospects at the top, and you just take
- 16:41Speaker 9: whoever is left over. And I think the Patriots are
- 16:44Speaker 9: thrilled the Drake May is the guy they got. I think, frankly,
- 16:47Speaker 9: all three teams were thrilled with how it played out.
- 16:49Speaker 9: But that's a different conversation for a different appearance here
- 16:52Speaker 9: on the show. This year, it's more difficult, not just
- 16:55Speaker 9: because of the fact that there are infinite scenarios that
- 16:58Speaker 9: could take place between one and thirty, the thirty picks
- 17:01Speaker 9: that precede the Patriots, but also it's this very unique
- 17:04Speaker 9: draft class. It's a draft class that I would say
- 17:06Speaker 9: bereef the blue chip talent. There are a few guys,
- 17:09Speaker 9: but not a lot of real difference makers and what
- 17:12Speaker 9: you find and earlier today I dropped my top fifty
- 17:15Speaker 9: on ESPN dot com and I try to be judicious
- 17:18Speaker 9: and checking comments on social media when you do things
- 17:21Speaker 9: like that. However, I'd imagine that there are probably some
- 17:24Speaker 9: people that are frustrated about certain players being too low,
- 17:27Speaker 9: maybe a couple of players being eyebrow raising in terms
- 17:31Speaker 9: of how high they are. But this is that draft class.
- 17:33Speaker 9: This is very much a choose your own adventure draft class.
- 17:37Speaker 9: I don't think there's tons in the way of consensus.
- 17:39Speaker 9: So for the Patriots at thirty one, I think the
- 17:41Speaker 9: needs to me would stack up in some order of
- 17:45Speaker 9: continue to at ed drushers, a wide receiver with the
- 17:48Speaker 9: caveat that of an aj Brown. Trade might get done
- 17:51Speaker 9: after June first, It's not quite as pressing of a need.
- 17:54Speaker 9: I think a number two tight end or number three
- 17:56Speaker 9: tight end, and how you want to categorize it, a
- 17:58Speaker 9: guy that can give you a little bit more than
- 18:00Speaker 9: what we have seen so far from Julian Hill as
- 18:03Speaker 9: a pass catcher. With Hunter Henry going into the final
- 18:06Speaker 9: year of his current contract, those are some of the
- 18:08Speaker 9: positions that come to mind for me. And then continuing
- 18:12Speaker 9: of course, to hammer along the offensive line. I think
- 18:14Speaker 9: they have their five guys if they were to play
- 18:16Speaker 9: a game tomorrow, But I all are you know they
- 18:20Speaker 9: have any chance to have their five guys if they play.
- 18:22Speaker 7: A game tomorrow.
- 18:23Speaker 9: I certainly think you know, the Avt signing gives them
- 18:26Speaker 9: some real versatility and helpside when.
- 18:28Speaker 7: He is healthy.
- 18:29Speaker 9: But they need to continue to add depth there as
- 18:31Speaker 9: we saw during the playoff, and you base off against
- 18:34Speaker 9: the Beast pass rushers, past pass rushers and pass rushers
- 18:38Speaker 9: as a group, you got to have not just five
- 18:40Speaker 9: guys you can really count on, but a great protection
- 18:42Speaker 9: plan and also some depth.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Love what you're saying about the edge and the tight
- 18:46Speaker 1: end groups. I mean those are two position groups of
- 18:48Speaker 1: the combine. We heard Brabel Elliott Wolf both mention those.
- 18:50Speaker 1: I mean, the tight ends totally hear what you're saying,
- 18:53Speaker 1: Like I just they get younger, get a young one
- 18:55Speaker 1: of these athletic guys, Matt Clair from Ohio State one
- 18:57Speaker 1: that I like. But I want to talk about two
- 18:59Speaker 1: other positions down there though. And you had Caleb Lomu
- 19:01Speaker 1: from Utah as a tackle taken in thirty first overall
- 19:04Speaker 1: in your first mock draft, which you know. To me,
- 19:06Speaker 1: I think that's a need too. I'd also look at
- 19:08Speaker 1: the safety position. You know, does one of those guys
- 19:11Speaker 1: get pushed down a little bit. It just signed Kevin Byerd.
- 19:13Speaker 1: He's on a one year deal. He's still playing at
- 19:15Speaker 1: a high level. You've got Craig Woodson kind of locked in,
- 19:17Speaker 1: But that could be a long position of need our
- 19:20Speaker 1: tackle and safety, maybe two dark horse positions down there
- 19:23Speaker 1: at thirty first overall that you could see them consider.
- 19:26Speaker 9: I try to remind consumers of my content this all
- 19:29Speaker 9: the time, is that, like other than quarterbacks, everything's kind
- 19:34Speaker 9: of a need for the Patriots because the NFL is
- 19:36Speaker 9: a unpredictable and there's a salary cap, so players that
- 19:39Speaker 9: are currently fixtures may not be fixtures for the next
- 19:43Speaker 9: five or six years. So I think that offensive line,
- 19:47Speaker 9: just in general it's talked about a need. Safety could
- 19:50Speaker 9: be a need as well. And I think that what
- 19:52Speaker 9: we realize with safeties, and this is something that has
- 19:55Speaker 9: really shifted over the past couple of years, is that
- 19:58Speaker 9: there's a specific type of safety that a Mike Rabol
- 20:01Speaker 9: and Zach Orr and Terrell Williams defense is going to
- 20:04Speaker 9: prioritize and value. Right, there were guys who just a
- 20:07Speaker 9: couple of years ago looked like they were going to
- 20:09Speaker 9: be fixtures for the Patriots and Kyle Dugger and also
- 20:12Speaker 9: the Broke Peppers, and then both of them are gone. Obviously,
- 20:15Speaker 9: the Gealen Hawkins for Kevin Bayern swap is one that
- 20:18Speaker 9: brings tons of familiarity. It's also a one year deal
- 20:21Speaker 9: for a safety in his thirties. Is Kevin Bayern. So
- 20:24Speaker 9: if you can find a guy that provides some of
- 20:26Speaker 9: that ability to chop off explosive plays down the field
- 20:29Speaker 9: like Buyer does.
- 20:30Speaker 7: He's got premier ball skills. He led the NFL interceptions.
- 20:33Speaker 9: Once again last season, died byed but safety is probably
- 20:36Speaker 9: a bigger need than maybe he is currently being forecasted.
- 20:40Speaker 9: And the Patriots showed last year that you can get
- 20:42Speaker 9: some good players in the rounds of the draft.
- 20:44Speaker 7: Craig Woodson was just excellent for them, and a guy.
- 20:47Speaker 9: That was a one hundred and second overall I think
- 20:50Speaker 9: it was for Craig, so not quite in the middle
- 20:53Speaker 9: of the draft, but just prior to the proverbial fifty
- 20:56Speaker 9: yard line of the twenty twenty five NFL Draft.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Well Field, I know you got another mock draft coming out.
- 21:00Speaker 1: You want to tease that at all. I don't want
- 21:02Speaker 1: you to give anything away, but you know this is
- 21:03Speaker 1: what we live at breathe on here in the spring.
- 21:06Speaker 9: Yeah, pass catcher will be one of the themes actually
- 21:08Speaker 9: a two round mock draft, so a pass catcher, and
- 21:10Speaker 9: but that there will certainly be a note in there
- 21:13Speaker 9: that this could all change if AJ Brown is eventually
- 21:16Speaker 9: shipped to New England. The delicate balance that you know
- 21:20Speaker 9: Elliott Wolf and Mike Vrabel are dealing with is that
- 21:23Speaker 9: you know there's no way to agree to a deal.
- 21:25Speaker 9: It's contingent upon getting done after June first, Like the
- 21:29Speaker 9: NFL does not allow that. You can have an agreement
- 21:32Speaker 9: in principle, but it can't be fully executed. So for
- 21:36Speaker 9: any number of reasons, the deal that you think is
- 21:38Speaker 9: done on March nineteenth may not be done once June
- 21:42Speaker 9: second rolls around. So you almost have to go into
- 21:45Speaker 9: this draft counting on receiver as a need. Address it
- 21:49Speaker 9: if you so desire. Keep in mind that AJ Brown
- 21:52Speaker 9: could become available, but I'm sure the Patriots and Eagles
- 21:55Speaker 9: have have had plenty of conversations about how realistic that
- 21:57Speaker 9: could be. And we still have five weeks until the
- 22:01Speaker 9: NFL drafts, so even more time for them to kind
- 22:03Speaker 9: of flesh out the parameters of a potential deal. The
- 22:06Speaker 9: pass catcher will be a need there for the Patriots.
- 22:08Speaker 9: I would note that they're in that sweet spot at
- 22:11Speaker 9: the back end of the first round as well that.
- 22:14Speaker 7: Teams will call right.
- 22:15Speaker 9: It's not just teams that maybe want to get up
- 22:18Speaker 9: in the back end of the first round for a quarterback.
- 22:21Speaker 9: And this does feel like one of those years where
- 22:23Speaker 9: we could see a team move up for Tyson Simpson
- 22:25Speaker 9: out of Alabama, but I think he will make it
- 22:27Speaker 9: into the twenties. But the other thing that I would
- 22:30Speaker 9: note is teams do want that fifth year of contract control.
- 22:35Speaker 9: The Carolina Panthers moved up a couple of years ago
- 22:38Speaker 9: from thirty three to thirty two to get Xavier andly
- 22:41Speaker 9: get the wide receiver out of Seuth Carolina, and it
- 22:45Speaker 9: could be that they wanted the fifth year of contract control.
- 22:49Speaker 7: That's theal in motivation.
- 22:50Speaker 9: It also could be that if you know a team
- 22:53Speaker 9: is convinced that Seattle or whoever might be picking at
- 22:55Speaker 9: thirty two is going to take who they really want
- 22:58Speaker 9: to the top of the second round, it could be
- 23:00Speaker 9: motivated to jump ahead and get to number thirty one.
- 23:03Speaker 9: So trade back is something that I think almost every
- 23:06Speaker 9: team likes to do. Especially in a draftcout class like this,
- 23:09Speaker 9: So wouldn't surprise me if the Patriots are proactive and
- 23:12Speaker 9: finding suitors that could come up to number thirty one overall,
- 23:16Speaker 9: just given the fact that I think the caliber of
- 23:17Speaker 9: player between thirty one and thirty seven forty is pretty similar.
- 23:25Speaker 9: Even in the draft in which the Patriots have, at
- 23:27Speaker 9: least right now the third most picks of any team
- 23:31Speaker 9: in the NFL, A.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Lot of uncertainty when you're down there at the bottom
- 23:34Speaker 1: of the first round makes a little bit more exciting.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I think, of course, they trade out. Could be a
- 23:37Speaker 1: long night, but we'll let that happen to you. Thank
- 23:40Speaker 1: you so much for taking the time, and we'll continue
- 23:42Speaker 1: to look out for your mock drafts and see what
- 23:44Speaker 1: comes about in April.
- 23:45Speaker 7: Thanks dude, appreciate you having me on.
- 23:51Speaker 1: All right, we're breaking down the defensive backs today. That includes,
- 23:54Speaker 1: of course, the cornerbacks and the safety group. Maybe not
- 23:56Speaker 1: positions of overwhelming needs, certainly not the cornerback spot where
- 24:00Speaker 1: the top three guys are going to return tease, But
- 24:01Speaker 1: why don't you set the table a little bit for
- 24:03Speaker 1: us here at the cornerback spot, of course, Christian Gonzales,
- 24:06Speaker 1: maybe up for an extension. That's a big part.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Christian Goanzalez certified as one of the best corners in
- 24:10Speaker 4: the league. Obviously you don't know what the extension situation
- 24:12Speaker 4: is going to be. You got Marcus Jones who got
- 24:15Speaker 4: the extension last season twenty twenty five, Carlton Davis coming
- 24:18Speaker 4: in for year two, and then you got some of
- 24:19Speaker 4: the younger guys Kobe minor, Charles Woods. We had marself's
- 24:23Speaker 4: dial off the injury, so it's listened. Nothing wrong with
- 24:26Speaker 4: taking a cornerback, but we got some depth.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Yeah, ev what are we looking for at the cornerback
- 24:30Speaker 1: position right now? All things considered what they have, but
- 24:33Speaker 1: just a generation.
- 24:34Speaker 3: I think that you know, if you're looking for somebody
- 24:36Speaker 3: that's going to step in at twenty twenty six, it's
- 24:39Speaker 3: probably another player on the outside as insurance for either
- 24:42Speaker 3: Carlton Davis or Christian Gonzalez. If you're looking for long term,
- 24:47Speaker 3: maybe the nickel spot gets in there a little bit more,
- 24:49Speaker 3: and we can talk about as we blur the lines
- 24:52Speaker 3: here at defensive back between safety and corner some of
- 24:55Speaker 3: the bigger nickel players that you know can come in
- 24:57Speaker 3: and add some size to that position. I think that's
- 25:00Speaker 3: really what you're looking for in terms of the immediate future.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Is a third outside corner that can rotate in and
- 25:07Speaker 3: maybe take some of the load off those guys, or
- 25:09Speaker 3: if there's an injury and then is there a bigger
- 25:12Speaker 3: body type that maybe you'd want to put inside to
- 25:15Speaker 3: help Marcus Jones out with, you know, some of those
- 25:17Speaker 3: big boys at tight end and things like that.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Let's just rifle it off the top. This is kind
- 25:22Speaker 1: of four guys to me, probably not going to be
- 25:24Speaker 1: there based on you know, mock drafts, and of course
- 25:26Speaker 1: Manser Delaine, Avion Terrell, Colton Hood, Jerab McCoy Hood McCoy.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I really like both those guys. I don't know if
- 25:33Speaker 1: there's a world where that would ever happen. All those
- 25:36Speaker 1: guys are talented, though, but when I see, you know,
- 25:38Speaker 1: physical players that can play a little bit of z own,
- 25:40Speaker 1: a little bit of man, that to me kind of
- 25:42Speaker 1: speaks to what they're looking for. Any of those top
- 25:44Speaker 1: four guys, Chris, for you that you enjoyed, I.
- 25:46Speaker 6: Mean you mentioned McCay. I think that was one that
- 25:48Speaker 6: really stuck out to me.
- 25:49Speaker 1: But coming off of an injury, right, yeah.
- 25:51Speaker 8: So I mean you want to see where you can
- 25:52Speaker 8: come or sort of develop following the injury. But you
- 25:56Speaker 8: know a guy that showed out to me personally and
- 25:58Speaker 8: accept another direction here is friend and cis you know,
- 26:02Speaker 8: potential to be a late first round pick.
- 26:04Speaker 6: I know there's a lot of speculation.
- 26:06Speaker 8: Obviously, the Chiefs just trade away Trent McDuffie, so they're
- 26:09Speaker 8: gonna be looking for a corner in some sort of
- 26:11Speaker 8: area there. But you know, quality guy sort of sideline
- 26:17Speaker 8: of sideline cornerback covers your outside, great against tight ends,
- 26:21Speaker 8: very strong, fast, ran a four, three, five forty, Like
- 26:25Speaker 8: you know, he's a guy that's he's a special dB.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Yeah, what about the top four? Have you got anything
- 26:29Speaker 1: on those guys?
- 26:30Speaker 3: I would just say with Colton hood like, he's probably
- 26:32Speaker 3: the one guy that's projected the most sort of at
- 26:34Speaker 3: that back end of the first round. I highly doubt
- 26:37Speaker 3: the Patriots are going to use the thirty first pick
- 26:38Speaker 3: on a corner. But I was looking at him a
- 26:41Speaker 3: little bit the other day, and the NFL dot Com
- 26:43Speaker 3: Lands Airline comparison is Carlton Davis. So if you're looking
- 26:47Speaker 3: for a player that kind of fits the suit and
- 26:49Speaker 3: fits that mold, if we're going to have that conversation.
- 26:52Speaker 3: But you know, I would say the guys that I
- 26:54Speaker 3: wrote down to specifically highlight today are more in that
- 26:57Speaker 3: mid round, maybe starting at the end of the third
- 27:00Speaker 3: Worth round range, because I think that's kind of we're
- 27:02Speaker 3: we're talking about them drafting for depth, not necessarily drafting
- 27:05Speaker 3: for starters.
- 27:06Speaker 4: With with Coltonhood, who I really liked, it's kind of
- 27:08Speaker 4: one of those situations. A lot of the mocks have
- 27:10Speaker 4: the Seahawks taking him, and it kind of makes sense sense.
- 27:12Speaker 4: Riquel and left, So I mean, big physical corner. I
- 27:15Speaker 4: like when the corners can jam the receiver matchup against
- 27:17Speaker 4: the big guys. So would be a good fit, just
- 27:19Speaker 4: just might not be the year for it.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean. Staying kind of on these top level guys.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Chris Johnson from San Diego State, another guy so really athletic,
- 27:26Speaker 1: great feet, you know, not great size or long speed,
- 27:29Speaker 1: but a versatile guy. Let's move on though, to some
- 27:31Speaker 1: of these you know, later round guys, and I'm just
- 27:33Speaker 1: gonna bring up to that that I enjoyed watching I again,
- 27:37Speaker 1: looking guys with some feistiness to their game. Keith Abney
- 27:40Speaker 1: from Arizona State and Dalen Evertt from Georgia and Dalen
- 27:43Speaker 1: Evert from Georgia. I just I mean, he's sixty one,
- 27:45Speaker 1: one ninety six, he ran a four to three eight,
- 27:46Speaker 1: he's played forty one.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Games in the SEC.
- 27:50Speaker 1: To me, he just looks the part he's experienced. I
- 27:54Speaker 1: really just responded to him, I don't know if you
- 27:56Speaker 1: did a ding ding, what.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Do you guys? Yeah, yeah, I mean he's the number
- 27:59Speaker 3: one guy on my list right now because I think,
- 28:01Speaker 3: you know, probably starting at the end of the third
- 28:03Speaker 3: round is where his name is going to be called.
- 28:05Speaker 3: He had a really great combine and I wonder if
- 28:08Speaker 3: that pushes him up into securely into that top one
- 28:11Speaker 3: hundred range. While you start to talk about guys in
- 28:13Speaker 3: their system that they are playing a little bit more
- 28:16Speaker 3: zone coverage, so you still want to have that ability
- 28:18Speaker 3: to play man to man, which I think ever it has,
- 28:20Speaker 3: but then you also really are going to be foundationally
- 28:23Speaker 3: a zone coverage team. That's you just describe the Georgia Bulldogs, right,
- 28:28Speaker 3: And I think a lot of the things that Georgia
- 28:29Speaker 3: does with their palms or quarters coverages and things like
- 28:33Speaker 3: that are similar to the way the Patriots want to
- 28:35Speaker 3: play coverage on the outside. Great athlete. As I mentioned,
- 28:39Speaker 3: you know, one of the best testers at the combine
- 28:41Speaker 3: ran in the I want to say, high four threes
- 28:43Speaker 3: or something. Yeah, yeahs got some size to him as
- 28:48Speaker 3: well with that kind of speed. So we're describing a
- 28:51Speaker 3: guy that, you know, most people are listening to this
- 28:53Speaker 3: probably like, well, why is this guy going in the
- 28:55Speaker 3: third or fourth round? He might not, you know, like that.
- 28:57Speaker 3: That's the reality of it. Now that we're getting into
- 29:00Speaker 3: this later stages a lot of these consensus boards, you
- 29:03Speaker 3: see his name starting to creep up into the third
- 29:05Speaker 3: round and even beyond.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Let's stop talking about him then maybe, yeah, maybe we
- 29:08Speaker 1: can push it too much type. Did you guys have
- 29:10Speaker 1: any thoughts in him? I know I shared him as
- 29:11Speaker 1: one of the names.
- 29:12Speaker 8: That no, no, not nothing, nothing directly on him necessarily
- 29:16Speaker 8: from there.
- 29:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I got some later guys.
- 29:18Speaker 5: I had Willie Lee just a good from Texas A
- 29:21Speaker 5: and m wille three.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Yeah, Willie three, I think that's a great that's a
- 29:23Speaker 4: great name. Willy three. No, just a good nix between
- 29:26Speaker 4: a man and his zone. You know, could put in
- 29:28Speaker 4: multiple places, good developmental prospect. If we're talking about a
- 29:30Speaker 4: depth guy outside Torreona Pride who ran a four to
- 29:33Speaker 4: three to two, which keep his name. We'll talk about
- 29:35Speaker 4: him in the safeties. But you can't teach speed. So
- 29:37Speaker 4: I think there's nothing wrong with taking a cornerback who
- 29:39Speaker 4: could run fast at the later rounds.
- 29:40Speaker 6: Yeah for me, for me just to jump into another
- 29:43Speaker 6: later round guy. Uh. Devin Moore from Florida. Uh, very lengthy.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Uh.
- 29:48Speaker 8: You know, green coverage, good downfield, can stand up right
- 29:52Speaker 8: when he's back only sometimes, but you know, thinks these things.
- 29:55Speaker 6: Can be adjusted.
- 29:56Speaker 8: I think these are important things to folks on because,
- 29:58Speaker 8: like we talked about the top of this, you're getting
- 30:00Speaker 8: a developmental guy. You're getting a guy that you can
- 30:02Speaker 8: help grow and and sort of a Justice gameplay and
- 30:05Speaker 8: I mean more is dealt with some injuries, but again
- 30:08Speaker 8: still also develop selsa grow. But you get into an
- 30:10Speaker 8: NFL system, especially here in New England, potentially you know
- 30:14Speaker 8: who knows what you're happening.
- 30:15Speaker 3: So we mentioned Dylan Everett, who I think is probably
- 30:18Speaker 3: gonna go high, probably top one hundred or at least
- 30:21Speaker 3: third round. Charles Demings from Steven F. Austin is kind
- 30:24Speaker 3: of like the other Dylan Everett, who's similar kind of player,
- 30:27Speaker 3: but smaller school and mic Go in that fourth round.
- 30:31Speaker 3: So you look at those picks at one twenty five
- 30:33Speaker 3: and one thirty one, you know, he makes a lot
- 30:35Speaker 3: of sense in that kind of range. But still another
- 30:37Speaker 3: six to one hundred and ninety pounds four to four corner,
- 30:41Speaker 3: you know, so has the size of speed to play
- 30:44Speaker 3: man to man, probably needs a little bit more seasoning
- 30:47Speaker 3: and zone coverage. It would probably be the next step
- 30:49Speaker 3: for him. I also just got to mention Lorenzo Styles
- 30:53Speaker 3: from Ohio State just because he's a Buckeye and we
- 30:55Speaker 3: know who the head coach is. So his brother Sonny
- 30:59Speaker 3: is going to be probably a top ten, top fifteen
- 31:01Speaker 3: tick in the draft. But Lorenzo Styles, as we sort
- 31:04Speaker 3: of segue, I brought him up here because we're just
- 31:06Speaker 3: gonna start talking about the safeties. He's kind of like
- 31:09Speaker 3: a nickel safety hybrid type of player that played a
- 31:13Speaker 3: lot over the slot at Ohio State and projects as
- 31:16Speaker 3: a guy that can play man to man out of
- 31:18Speaker 3: the slot, but has some size that maybe he can
- 31:21Speaker 3: do some safety things too. So like him, Jalen Kilgore
- 31:24Speaker 3: from South Carolina, that Genesis Smith from Arizona. Those are
- 31:29Speaker 3: the types of guys that have a little history of
- 31:31Speaker 3: playing pure slot corner that maybe the Patriots could be
- 31:34Speaker 3: interested in. I'm interested to see when Lorenzo Styles goes
- 31:38Speaker 3: because all the attention at the combine was on his brother,
- 31:41Speaker 3: and then he went out there and had a ridiculous
- 31:43Speaker 3: workout himself, and it's like, what is this family? Like, Like,
- 31:48Speaker 3: what is going on?
- 31:48Speaker 1: Is Monny and Lorenzo Styles elite athletes?
- 31:50Speaker 5: Great names?
- 31:51Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 31:52Speaker 3: And his mom's like in the stands and she's like
- 31:54Speaker 3: rooting for both of them, and I'm like, mom, like
- 31:57Speaker 3: what did you do? And so I think Lorenz those
- 32:00Speaker 3: Styles is probably an early Day three pick, you know,
- 32:02Speaker 3: maybe in the top one fifty. Yeah, And I you know,
- 32:05Speaker 3: all the trades that you look for, well have you used?
- 32:07Speaker 1: You started to turn the page. Why don't you set
- 32:08Speaker 1: the table though for us at the at the safety
- 32:10Speaker 1: positions because there was a huge transition this year, and
- 32:13Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know how many people would have
- 32:15Speaker 1: expected that the twenty twenty five Patriots, we're gonna get
- 32:18Speaker 1: rid of Kyle Dugger and Jibril Peppers turn it right
- 32:20Speaker 1: over to rookie Craig Woodson. Jalen Hawkins, primarily a special
- 32:23Speaker 1: teams player, comes in and starts. Now you bring in
- 32:27Speaker 1: Kevin Byerd, I think we can all agree. You know,
- 32:29Speaker 1: there's some depth questions here and especially long term with
- 32:31Speaker 1: the one year deal, But what do you see out
- 32:33Speaker 1: of that position right now when you look at these prospects?
- 32:36Speaker 1: What checks your box for this is the Patriots kind of.
- 32:39Speaker 3: Guy coverage coverage coverage, Like I feel like we're out
- 32:42Speaker 3: of the days now with the Patriots where playing in
- 32:44Speaker 3: the box, playing starting closer to the line of scrimmage,
- 32:49Speaker 3: being able to you know, do basically like that hybrid
- 32:52Speaker 3: linebacker safety thing. I don't know if we're in that
- 32:55Speaker 3: world anymore. I feel like now with the Patriots defense,
- 32:59Speaker 3: they want guys that can cover a lot of grass
- 33:01Speaker 3: on the back end, that can play over the top
- 33:02Speaker 3: of the defense, that can play quarters, that can match
- 33:06Speaker 3: the slot. I think that's probably one of the most
- 33:08Speaker 3: important things in terms of the level of difficulty of
- 33:12Speaker 3: the assignment. You know, when they go to three by
- 33:15Speaker 3: one and they go to quarters in two by two,
- 33:17Speaker 3: if they go to a bunch formation offensively, those types
- 33:21Speaker 3: of things, usually the safety ends up in man coverage
- 33:23Speaker 3: on somebody. So you need someone in that mold that
- 33:26Speaker 3: has a little bit of coverage skills in man to
- 33:29Speaker 3: man and can run with people and can carry verticals,
- 33:32Speaker 3: can catch verticals down the field, you know, ten twelve
- 33:35Speaker 3: yards off the ball. So it's not so much the
- 33:39Speaker 3: Kyle Duggars, the Jabriel Peppers is the world anymore. Now
- 33:42Speaker 3: it's the Craig Woodson. It's like the guys that can
- 33:44Speaker 3: really cover in the back end. That box needs to
- 33:47Speaker 3: be checked first and then we can start worrying about
- 33:49Speaker 3: physicality and run defense.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I remember asking you something similar there in the season.
- 33:52Speaker 1: You're like, well, you know, like Kevin Byern. Now here's
- 33:55Speaker 1: Kevin Byron. Of course there's a consensus top guy here,
- 33:58Speaker 1: Caleb Downs. I'm gonna let you guys jump in on
- 34:01Speaker 1: him and Thieneman because I'm gonna let Evan go on
- 34:04Speaker 1: Emmanuel McNeil Warren because I know he's got a little
- 34:06Speaker 1: bit of.
- 34:06Speaker 3: A little bit of I got a crush on both
- 34:08Speaker 3: him and Dylan. I mean that that combine workout is
- 34:13Speaker 3: like he's a beast.
- 34:14Speaker 4: He's three year start around like a four to three
- 34:16Speaker 4: seven or something. He's he watch his tape, He's everywhere
- 34:19Speaker 4: like that. That's that's the dream. I mean, Evan, would
- 34:22Speaker 4: you say first round or probably the top twenty, top twenty.
- 34:24Speaker 4: So like that's one of those things if if he's there, like,
- 34:27Speaker 4: do you make the move? Like I think it's a
- 34:29Speaker 4: worthy conversation, right if he somehow slides like which I
- 34:33Speaker 4: don't think he will, but like you just gotta think
- 34:35Speaker 4: Evan's talking about, Yeah, he might not start this year,
- 34:37Speaker 4: but like there's he's a beast.
- 34:38Speaker 5: There's something you can't pass up on.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, quarter about down, So we got to talk
- 34:42Speaker 1: about down then. I mean, look, there's no hope of that,
- 34:46Speaker 1: but him at the combine talking about Matt Patricia, the
- 34:48Speaker 1: impact that he had, I mean, talk about a guy
- 34:50Speaker 1: that can do everything. Some team's gonna get a really
- 34:53Speaker 1: good player.
- 34:53Speaker 3: There's sometimes when you like hear about prospects and you
- 34:56Speaker 3: hear the hyperbole of like this is the best safety
- 34:59Speaker 3: prospects since Ed Reid, and I'm like, no, this might
- 35:01Speaker 3: be the best safety for prospects. Sin said read like
- 35:03Speaker 3: that might actually be true in this case. I don't
- 35:08Speaker 3: a guy that wears as many hats as he does
- 35:10Speaker 3: and has the ability to play in all three levels
- 35:12Speaker 3: of the defense, and Matt Patricia used him as a
- 35:14Speaker 3: pro safety last year. Moving him around and hunting matchups
- 35:18Speaker 3: and putting out fires and all that kind of stuff
- 35:20Speaker 3: that you saw for years here in New England with
- 35:22Speaker 3: their safeties. So he hit. The hype is one hundred
- 35:25Speaker 3: percent real with him. You know, I I didn't honestly
- 35:28Speaker 3: haven't watched him a ton closely because I get into it.
- 35:33Speaker 3: But yeah, I think that the one thing that you
- 35:35Speaker 3: did hear a little bit with him coming out of
- 35:37Speaker 3: the combine is maybe some concerns about his knee and
- 35:41Speaker 3: his injury not hit history in terms of what he
- 35:44Speaker 3: happened at Ohio State because nothing really happened, but his
- 35:46Speaker 3: longevity of his career because of maybe some of those
- 35:50Speaker 3: types of medical things. But that's like maybe a team
- 35:53Speaker 3: that's picking eleventh that like, and I'm making that up,
- 35:55Speaker 3: but like maybe that is trying to get him to
- 35:57Speaker 3: fall or something like that, because there's there's really not
- 36:00Speaker 3: a lot of holes in his game.
- 36:02Speaker 6: No, he's an absolute stud.
- 36:03Speaker 8: I mean, Caleb down is one of my personal favorite
- 36:06Speaker 8: safeties in the Tricks. I know he's everybody's favorite safety
- 36:09Speaker 8: in the tribe, but he's just so dynamic and fun
- 36:12Speaker 8: to watch him. I Mean, we talked about these multi
- 36:14Speaker 8: layer guys like Craig Woodson, great fine for the.
- 36:16Speaker 6: Patriots, especially last year.
- 36:18Speaker 8: Yeah, he's a guy you know you talk about playing
- 36:22Speaker 8: like deep third of the field, kind of ballhog safety
- 36:24Speaker 8: style what you need now, and Craig Woodson is added
- 36:28Speaker 8: that piece to the run league solid, one of the
- 36:31Speaker 8: better tacklers from the secondary.
- 36:33Speaker 6: And Caleb Downs, I mean he can do it both
- 36:35Speaker 6: ways too.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Yeah, So I was really I pressed with Woodson though
- 36:37Speaker 1: this year just the quick at side, like just yeah,
- 36:39Speaker 1: he looks like a free safety. He understands how to
- 36:41Speaker 1: navigate traffic and how to get the ball and tastes
- 36:43Speaker 1: good angles. It's a great building piece, and especially his
- 36:46Speaker 1: playoff was outstanding. But just moving on to you know,
- 36:49Speaker 1: some favorites. I'm not going to talk about him bug Clark.
- 36:52Speaker 1: You know one favorite of mind that the two guys
- 36:54Speaker 1: I want to mention though that I just is aj
- 36:56Speaker 1: Halsey from LSU and Trade and Stokes from Arizona, two
- 36:59Speaker 1: guys that I kept coming back to.
- 37:01Speaker 5: Halsey.
- 37:01Speaker 1: We're in a four or five two not great, but
- 37:03Speaker 1: he just he's got the build and and I mean
- 37:05Speaker 1: maybe to Evan's point, he's not quite the run all
- 37:08Speaker 1: over the place kind of a guy. But he's just
- 37:11Speaker 1: one where you drawing a certain kind of players and
- 37:13Speaker 1: I don't know, he looks the part to me, maybe
- 37:16Speaker 1: he would play a third safety kind of role. And
- 37:18Speaker 1: then with Stukes there's there's no speed concern with him
- 37:22Speaker 1: four three three, But just with him watching him, he
- 37:25Speaker 1: did everything that Evan talked about. He can play off
- 37:27Speaker 1: the overhang, he can blitz, he can play in the
- 37:30Speaker 1: back half. Those are just two guys probably you know,
- 37:33Speaker 1: second third round in there. Maybe not quite the matchup,
- 37:37Speaker 1: but those were just two guys to me that that
- 37:38Speaker 1: stood out.
- 37:39Speaker 3: Yeah, Halsey's an interesting player. He's one of the more
- 37:42Speaker 3: fun safeties to me in this class because of how
- 37:44Speaker 3: he hits. Yeah, he's like one of the He's one
- 37:46Speaker 3: of the only guys other than McNeil Warren who's like
- 37:49Speaker 3: really physical. These other guys that were gonna talk about
- 37:52Speaker 3: are cover players and rangey players and you know one
- 37:55Speaker 3: ninety five two hundred pounds run well, Halsey's the one
- 37:59Speaker 3: guy that really is an enforcer over the middle of
- 38:03Speaker 3: the field. Now. I think the issue with him though,
- 38:06Speaker 3: is that he's a little bit rigid, a little bit stiff.
- 38:08Speaker 3: He doesn't quite have the sideline the sideline range over
- 38:11Speaker 3: the top of the defense. So he's going to be
- 38:13Speaker 3: a scheme specific player and he's not going to be
- 38:17Speaker 3: for everybody, and his role in the NFL is going
- 38:19Speaker 3: to be really really important, Like some team is going
- 38:22Speaker 3: to have to figure out how to keep him out
- 38:24Speaker 3: of those like dynamic foot races down the branches.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Maybe a little you know, yeah, I mean, I know
- 38:32Speaker 1: it's a little different, but it's similar kind of you're
- 38:35Speaker 1: going to have to do something special.
- 38:36Speaker 3: He's one of the biggest safeties in the class too.
- 38:38Speaker 3: You know, two hundred and fifteen pounds is big for
- 38:41Speaker 3: safety these days, So he's one of those we lost
- 38:45Speaker 3: over McNeil Warren. Just touch for a second, you know,
- 38:49Speaker 3: I think that with him, you know, I see a
- 38:52Speaker 3: lot of highlights about him playing the deep part of
- 38:54Speaker 3: the field at Toledo and making plays on the football,
- 38:57Speaker 3: and I think that's in there. But I I think
- 39:00Speaker 3: really his destiny is that Kyle Hamilton, nick him and
- 39:03Speaker 3: Warry Roll where he's playing more in the box or
- 39:06Speaker 3: over the slot, specifically in a lot of the you know,
- 39:09Speaker 3: nickel and dime packages where they use big safeties these days.
- 39:12Speaker 3: In those roles, his ability to you know, make plays
- 39:16Speaker 3: on the football, his length, his tackling ability, his ability
- 39:20Speaker 3: to take on blocks and hold up run plays in
- 39:23Speaker 3: that sense, are all just plus plus plus trades across
- 39:27Speaker 3: the board.
- 39:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Good, No, I don't want, I don't. I just is
- 39:30Speaker 1: there any chance one of those I mean, obviously not downs,
- 39:32Speaker 1: but is there any chance that one of those top
- 39:34Speaker 1: three safeties is there at thirty one?
- 39:36Speaker 3: I don't think so. I mean McNeil Warren's probably the
- 39:38Speaker 3: best case like in terms of somebody falling there. And
- 39:41Speaker 3: I do think the Patriots reportedly had him in for
- 39:43Speaker 3: a thirty thirty visits, so they obviously feel like he
- 39:46Speaker 3: might be somebody that could slip through the cracks to
- 39:48Speaker 3: thirty one. I think the two things that maybe make
- 39:51Speaker 3: him fall that way now, Quinjon Mitchell went to Toledo,
- 39:54Speaker 3: so it's not like Toledo's never had a guy that
- 39:57Speaker 3: they produced in the NFL. But it's not a big
- 39:59Speaker 3: time program, so you are seeing a level of, you know,
- 40:02Speaker 3: jumping level of competition from Toledo to the NFL. I
- 40:06Speaker 3: would also say, like I was kind of getting at
- 40:09Speaker 3: he's a taller, leggier corner safety, so like when he's
- 40:12Speaker 3: back there, I don't know if he's going to be
- 40:15Speaker 3: a true free safety at the NFL level because of that.
- 40:18Speaker 8: The thing though, despite his height, I feel like a
- 40:20Speaker 8: big thing for him is, like you mentioned.
- 40:22Speaker 6: It, it's his physicality.
- 40:24Speaker 8: Like being in safety and being that physical is exactly
- 40:27Speaker 8: what a team wants to see, and I feel like
- 40:29Speaker 8: that's such a big, big role to fill, especially here
- 40:32Speaker 8: in New England. So I mean I really like his physicality.
- 40:35Speaker 8: I mean he had nine force fumbles. He's a tackling machine,
- 40:39Speaker 8: peanut pinches like.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Everyone talking about ballhawks and stuff, which I like. But
- 40:43Speaker 4: I like my safety still to hit like I Chancellor. So,
- 40:47Speaker 4: like I mentioned with the corners, there was Pride from
- 40:50Speaker 4: Missouri who ran a four four to three, So this
- 40:52Speaker 4: guy stands out Robert Spears Jennings from Oklahoma, myself Pride.
- 40:57Speaker 4: Pride ran a four three four three two at like
- 41:00Speaker 4: one five. This guy is six two two o five
- 41:04Speaker 4: and ran the same speed like Cream.
- 41:06Speaker 5: He's a train, like he's gonna be a later round guy.
- 41:08Speaker 4: But like just physical on the ball there and then
- 41:12Speaker 4: for the more realistic Day two thing, I like Zachy
- 41:14Speaker 4: Wheatley from Penn state just.
- 41:17Speaker 3: Another thirty visit guy. Yeah, he he definitely has the
- 41:20Speaker 3: cover skills that they're gonna look for. I wrote dad
- 41:23Speaker 3: and in my notes with him, pure free safety, Like
- 41:25Speaker 3: I think he is a pure over the top player.
- 41:28Speaker 3: He's got lengthed but he's a little bit lean in
- 41:30Speaker 3: his frame right now. But I think his movement skills
- 41:32Speaker 3: and coverage and his ability to play over the top
- 41:35Speaker 3: of the defensor are really really good. So I think
- 41:38Speaker 3: there's a group of those types of players, you know, him,
- 41:41Speaker 3: Ramsey from USC kind of fits that mole. You know,
- 41:44Speaker 3: those guys on day two you can you can talk about.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Chris, he's setting you up.
- 41:49Speaker 3: You know, those are the types of players. You know,
- 41:52Speaker 3: just mentioned Bud Clark, who's a cresh of mine, and
- 41:54Speaker 3: like the third or fourth round, those guys are if
- 41:57Speaker 3: you're looking for people that can cover, you know, that's
- 41:59Speaker 3: what you're talking about. And I also want to talk
- 42:01Speaker 3: about Genesis Smith a little bit too, but you go
- 42:03Speaker 3: ahead with.
- 42:04Speaker 6: No, it's all good, Yeah, no you touched. I say coverag.
- 42:06Speaker 8: Thing for Ramsey, very very yes, very appealing from Ramsey.
- 42:12Speaker 8: You know, you can put them deep, you can put
- 42:14Speaker 8: them in the slot. You know, really trusted and coverage.
- 42:17Speaker 8: He sees the ball well, and I think his ability
- 42:20Speaker 8: to crash on receivers and really force that impact and
- 42:23Speaker 8: force the ball out of the hands, I think that's
- 42:25Speaker 8: a that's a major, a major positive for him. And
- 42:28Speaker 8: I mean he had the knee injury that that kind
- 42:30Speaker 8: of sideline number there was twenty twenty five, but again
- 42:32Speaker 8: like just another guy kind of coming and can still
- 42:34Speaker 8: develop and you know, possible day two, day three guy.
- 42:37Speaker 1: So I like what you're getting at with ball disruption
- 42:39Speaker 1: because I think that's you know, not enough turnovers last year. Yeah,
- 42:41Speaker 1: think that's they think it's reallyant kind of it gives
- 42:44Speaker 1: the defense its personality when they turned the ball over
- 42:47Speaker 1: open the floor, anybody got another and I'm sure you off.
- 42:50Speaker 3: A couple more So. Genesis Smith from Arizona interests me
- 42:53Speaker 3: because in twenty four he played the nickel spot there
- 42:56Speaker 3: at slot Corner, and then in twenty five he went
- 42:58Speaker 3: back and played a little bit more free and I
- 43:01Speaker 3: had a lot of more you know, interceptions and ball
- 43:03Speaker 3: production there. But I actually watched some of his twenty
- 43:05Speaker 3: four tape at Slock Corner and I thought it was
- 43:07Speaker 3: pretty solid too. So he's a guy that can do
- 43:10Speaker 3: a little bit of both of those things, like kind
- 43:11Speaker 3: of like a free nickel hybrid, which is sort of
- 43:14Speaker 3: what I think they want their safeties to do and
- 43:17Speaker 3: maybe what they could be looking for long term. Jalen
- 43:20Speaker 3: Kilgore is a favorite of mine. He's a pure nickel,
- 43:23Speaker 3: like big nickel that could come in and, you know,
- 43:26Speaker 3: maybe play when you play a team that's gonna play
- 43:28Speaker 3: multiple tight ends or play a full back or something
- 43:31Speaker 3: like that, and you want to be bigger in your
- 43:33Speaker 3: nickel package. I think Jalen Kilgore is one of those
- 43:36Speaker 3: types of guys do as you mentioned Bud Clark like that.
- 43:39Speaker 3: That to me looks like Craig Woodson two point zero.
- 43:42Speaker 3: You know, he can play you know, quarters coverage, he
- 43:44Speaker 3: can play man to man, he can fill the alleys
- 43:46Speaker 3: in the run game. Yeah, he's a ball hog. He
- 43:51Speaker 3: gets his hands on football sometimes at the detriment. Sometimes
- 43:54Speaker 3: he takes too many risks trying to get hands on footballs.
- 43:56Speaker 3: But I think that he's the type of guy that
- 43:59Speaker 3: kind of when I watched him, I was like, well,
- 44:01Speaker 3: the Patriots asked their safety to do this, They asked
- 44:03Speaker 3: him to do that. They asked him to do that,
- 44:05Speaker 3: and he was kind of checking all the boxes. Then
- 44:07Speaker 3: you sort of get into like the VJ. Paines and
- 44:10Speaker 3: Ja down too. Yeah, Like I got to get a
- 44:12Speaker 3: little bit lower in the draft, you know, Jacob Thomas
- 44:15Speaker 3: from Miami. Like now we're talking, you know, maybe fifth round,
- 44:19Speaker 3: sixth round safety prospects that I'll do a little bit.
- 44:22Speaker 6: But VJ.
- 44:23Speaker 3: Pain's an interesting one. He's he's a fun play. Yeah.
- 44:25Speaker 1: I liked him too. I mean the same thing you said.
- 44:26Speaker 1: I saw him at free safety, saw him in the box.
- 44:29Speaker 1: He's six three two oh six with a four to
- 44:30Speaker 1: four forty two game starter captain. Yeah, yeah, I like that.
- 44:34Speaker 1: I think like that to me makes sense, Like day three,
- 44:37Speaker 1: early day three, you get your guy to learn behind
- 44:40Speaker 1: Byron and Woodson. Maybe next year he's able to take over.
- 44:43Speaker 3: Yeah. That's the question is are they are they looking
- 44:45Speaker 3: for the future starting safety of the New England Patriots
- 44:49Speaker 3: or are they looking for a complimentary player to the
- 44:52Speaker 3: twenty twenty six New England Patriots. Because if it's the
- 44:54Speaker 3: complimentary player, then we're looking at the box nickel types
- 44:58Speaker 3: that can play against bigger person because they're gonna have buyered,
- 45:01Speaker 3: they're gonna have Craig Woodson. Those guys are gonna play
- 45:03Speaker 3: in the deep part of the field. If they're looking
- 45:05Speaker 3: for Kevin Byerd's on a one year contract, he's thirty
- 45:08Speaker 3: three years old, YadA, YadA, YadA. Then we're talking about
- 45:11Speaker 3: drafting one of these like Bud Clark's or something like
- 45:13Speaker 3: that that can cover people. This is some crossover.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I mean, I think we'll probably talk a lot about
- 45:16Speaker 1: this on Draft Countdown as we get closer to the draft.
- 45:19Speaker 1: There's just you know, how do they get more in
- 45:20Speaker 1: the tank to cover tight ends. Do they you know,
- 45:22Speaker 1: try to help at the winebacker position. Is that a
- 45:25Speaker 1: coverage position or are they looking at, you know, one
- 45:27Speaker 1: of these guys like Halsey who could maybe play in
- 45:29Speaker 1: the box and kind of play some of that role.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Interesting how they're gonna approach it, I don't think any
- 45:32Speaker 1: of us know, But that's why we're here on Patriots
- 45:34Speaker 1: Draft Countdown. So I want to thank you guys for
- 45:36Speaker 1: tuning in this week. We're gonna be back next week
- 45:39Speaker 1: with more Patriots Draft content.
