- 0:10Speaker 1: God bless football, Mikey A.
- 0:15Speaker 2: God bless football, the bear.
- 0:17Speaker 3: God bless, I guess, a 2014 college football playoff.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Bear, bear, bear, bear. God bless football, Taylor. Let's do
- 0:28Speaker 4: it again.
- 0:29Speaker 3: God bless football, Taylor.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Listen, that's on you. It's not on Bear. Don't blame Bear.
- 0:34Speaker 1: You're supposed to throw it to Taylor. Taylor throws it
- 0:36Speaker 1: to Bear.
- 0:36Speaker 5: I mean.
- 0:37Speaker 4: I always go guest first.
- 0:38Speaker 5: You know that. All right.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Well, I know, but Bear does it. All right, let's
- 0:43Speaker 1: start again. 3, 2, 1. Keep it all in there, Taylor.
- 0:45Speaker 1: God bless football, Mikey A.
- 0:49Speaker 4: God bless football, the bear.
- 0:52Speaker 3: God bless football, Taylor.
- 0:54Speaker 6: God bless the 2014 playoff, I guess.
- 0:59Speaker 3: You said it, not me.
- 1:02Speaker 5: You guys want to try it again? Okay, fine. Forget it.
- 1:07Speaker 5: I was about to do another God bless football.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Bear, we have a 2014 playoff that in all likelihood
- 1:13Speaker 1: is going to happen.
- 1:14Speaker 5: It's going to happen soon. It's based on money. We
- 1:16Speaker 5: all know that.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Your thoughts, because you, I consider you to be like me,
- 1:22Speaker 1: someone who loves the traditions of college football, and some
- 1:25Speaker 1: of that is being stripped away with a 24-team playoff.
- 1:30Speaker 5: It is patently absurd to me. What are your thoughts here?
- 1:33Speaker 3: It is patently absurd to me as well. We don't
- 1:36Speaker 3: even have 25 teams worth ranking a lot in the
- 1:41Speaker 3: AP poll and now in the college football playoff. Top
- 1:44Speaker 3: 25 is just kind of filler at the bottom. So
- 1:49Speaker 3: I have a ton of questions. The biggest question I
- 1:53Speaker 3: have in this is what finally caused the SEC to break?
- 2:01Speaker 3: Was it they were just kind of the last man
- 2:03Speaker 3: on the island? The Big Ten wanted it. The Big
- 2:07Speaker 3: 12 wanted it. The ACC wanted it. I guess... by
- 2:12Speaker 3: all accounts, like the money isn't like that big of
- 2:16Speaker 3: a deal, but they got the SEC championship game, which
- 2:20Speaker 3: fans love. It's a cash cow. Like, is it, was
- 2:24Speaker 3: it worth lighting that championship game on fire for this
- 2:29Speaker 3: to potentially get like three teams that are in that
- 2:32Speaker 3: nine and three, eight and four range into a college
- 2:36Speaker 3: football playoff, just to have them get like one home game.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Like I, I don't know what we're doing here, but
- 2:42Speaker 3: like I said, I have a ton of questions still.
- 2:45Speaker 1: What it does for me, it entirely takes away what's
- 2:48Speaker 1: great about the regular season in college football. When it
- 2:51Speaker 1: was four, you still had those meaningful games. Even at 12,
- 2:54Speaker 1: you still have meaningful games. You have de facto playoff games.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Now you're going to have teams who can get in
- 2:59Speaker 1: with four losses. I mean, it's absurd.
- 3:03Speaker 3: It is, and you hit on something there, which is
- 3:06Speaker 3: something that I was thinking about. as this news was coming,
- 3:10Speaker 3: coming out, we, we talked about that. We both love
- 3:13Speaker 3: what's inherently great about the sport and the traditions. And
- 3:17Speaker 3: you think about watching and paying attention to the sport
- 3:20Speaker 3: for our lives. We had an era of forever where
- 3:24Speaker 3: people were begging for a, a true championship game and, Oh,
- 3:28Speaker 3: there's split titles and you can't play. It was going
- 3:31Speaker 3: to be big 10 pack 10 in the Rose bowl.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You couldn't have any of these arrangements and, So forever,
- 3:37Speaker 3: we just didn't have a real championship game. Then we finally,
- 3:40Speaker 3: in 98, get the BCS, one versus two in the BCS.
- 3:45Speaker 3: So we have that. And after a few years, people
- 3:48Speaker 3: didn't like that because we felt like there were teams
- 3:50Speaker 3: on the outside looking in that should have been in there.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And you still had some split titles because the AP
- 3:55Speaker 3: would vote them. So after about 18 years or so
- 3:59Speaker 3: of that, we finally expand to a 14 playoff. because
- 4:05Speaker 3: people were tired of just having one versus two. With
- 4:08Speaker 3: a four-team playoff, it's going pretty well. And then after
- 4:11Speaker 3: a few years, people are like, well, it's Clemson, Alabama
- 4:14Speaker 3: and Georgia, one of the national title every year. No
- 4:17Speaker 3: one else can win it. We need to get bigger.
- 4:19Speaker 3: So it took them another like 10 years to go
- 4:22Speaker 3: from 12 to 20 to 12, from four to 12.
- 4:25Speaker 3: And now we're not even through three years of 12.
- 4:30Speaker 7: Yes.
- 4:30Speaker 3: And we're like moving at a record pace. We're going
- 4:33Speaker 3: to go from 12 to 24 like that after it
- 4:36Speaker 3: appears that most people kind of like this 12 and
- 4:39Speaker 3: want to see it. play out. Like I was opposed to,
- 4:42Speaker 3: I didn't know if 12 would be right. I thought
- 4:45Speaker 3: we might be watering it down a little bit, but
- 4:47Speaker 3: 12 has worked pretty well outside of last year when
- 4:51Speaker 3: just the committee just ranked the teams wrong. So yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 3: I'm shocked at how fast we've just gone from 12
- 4:58Speaker 3: to 24 and not really thought this thing out apparently.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Bear, I'm against the expanded playoffs, but if I was
- 5:03Speaker 6: playing devil's advocate for the expanded playoffs, I'm People always say,
- 5:08Speaker 6: like Stu Gotch has said, you're devaluing the regular season.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Wouldn't it almost be the opposite where more teams have
- 5:15Speaker 6: something to play for, where instead of 15 teams competing
- 5:18Speaker 6: for 12 spots, you could have 30 to 35 teams
- 5:21Speaker 6: fighting for 24 spots deep into November?
- 5:24Speaker 5: That's a great point.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true. But I just don't think the teams
- 5:30Speaker 3: that we are adding that group of teams to fight
- 5:35Speaker 3: for a playoff spot, I just don't know if that's
- 5:38Speaker 3: like the bang for the buck or like people outside
- 5:41Speaker 3: of maybe those fan bases are going to get excited.
- 5:44Speaker 3: But I get what you're saying. Like, I don't think
- 5:46Speaker 3: like is a, is a BYU Georgia tech first round game.
- 5:50Speaker 3: It really exciting. Is a, is a Houston, is a
- 5:53Speaker 3: Houston Tulane first round game. No, we're really excited. You,
- 5:58Speaker 3: I get what you're saying though, about you're trying to
- 6:00Speaker 3: draw in more fan bases and more teams to be
- 6:05Speaker 3: interested in in the playoff. So I think it's going
- 6:08Speaker 3: to have, you use this weekend as an example, Ohio state, Indiana,
- 6:13Speaker 3: where I am, Ohio state's got a loss already.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 6:16Speaker 3: If Ohio state loses tomorrow in a 2014 playoff, It
- 6:21Speaker 3: doesn't matter. They're still in. Even if they go 9-3,
- 6:24Speaker 3: they're going to get in. However, if they lose tomorrow,
- 6:28Speaker 3: they've got two losses and you've still got your rival, Michigan.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Anything can happen in that game. You've got Oregon. You've
- 6:34Speaker 3: got what USC saw. You've still got games on your
- 6:37Speaker 3: schedule that you've left yourself zero margin for error now
- 6:42Speaker 3: the rest of the year. So I think that's going
- 6:44Speaker 3: to be the biggest difference where Every 10-2 SEC or
- 6:47Speaker 3: Big Ten team are going to get in. Almost every
- 6:50Speaker 3: 9-3 SEC and Big Ten team are going to get in.
- 6:53Speaker 3: And you might even see an 8-4 SEC or Big
- 6:56Speaker 3: Ten team get in as well. So it's kind of made,
- 7:01Speaker 3: I think, some of these– games for the bigger name
- 7:04Speaker 3: opponents a little bit less worthwhile.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That was the point I was going to make because
- 7:09Speaker 1: Ohio State, I love the idea that they have some
- 7:11Speaker 1: pressure on them this weekend. They have to win that game.
- 7:13Speaker 1: That game is more important to Ohio State than it
- 7:15Speaker 1: is to Indiana. But in a 2014 playoff, Mikey, it's ridiculous.
- 7:20Speaker 1: You take all the steam off of games like that
- 7:24Speaker 1: and all the steam off of Notre Dame and BYU
- 7:27Speaker 1: because it doesn't matter who wins that game. Both teams
- 7:29Speaker 1: are going to make a 2014 playoff.
- 7:32Speaker 8: Yeah, to your point, Bear, last year at 23 was
- 7:37Speaker 8: Iowa at 8-4. They would have gotten in and they
- 7:41Speaker 8: would have traveled to Miami for that first game in
- 7:45Speaker 8: the playoff last year. But, Bear, you mentioned how quickly
- 7:49Speaker 8: it's kind of expanding.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Do you think there's.
- 7:52Speaker 2: A world where we can contract? Like if we do this.
- 7:57Speaker 8: For a year or two, three years, and they're like,
- 8:00Speaker 8: you know what, this isn't it. Do you see a
- 8:02Speaker 8: world where we could go, all right, let's go back
- 8:05Speaker 8: to 12? Or once we open to 24.
- 8:08Speaker 2: That's it? It's only getting bigger or staying the same?
- 8:12Speaker 3: I think once the toothpaste is out of the tube,
- 8:16Speaker 3: I don't think there's any way back. Because what's going
- 8:22Speaker 3: to wind up happening is you're going to see so
- 8:24Speaker 3: many of these bowl games go away. And the Reels
- 8:27Speaker 3: are going to be an avenue to really contract anymore. So, yeah,
- 8:32Speaker 3: I am shocked that they went through with this this quickly,
- 8:37Speaker 3: given the kind of the negative feedback to everything. I
- 8:41Speaker 3: saw someone out there draw a parallel to NASCAR about
- 8:46Speaker 3: how they're kind of going down the same path NASCAR
- 8:49Speaker 3: maybe did and trying to expand and the growth and
- 8:52Speaker 3: really kind of lose the hardcore fan of what really
- 8:57Speaker 3: made that, that sports special. So we'll, we'll see. Cause
- 9:00Speaker 3: one of the, I think the biggest thing, which I
- 9:03Speaker 3: think is a misnomer that people are selling fans on
- 9:07Speaker 3: is that teams are going to like, like schedule tougher
- 9:11Speaker 3: non-conference games now. I don't think that's going to be
- 9:14Speaker 3: the case. Because I think now, instead of just getting in,
- 9:18Speaker 3: you've got to worry about a bye. And if you
- 9:21Speaker 3: want a bye, you want to have the best possible
- 9:24Speaker 3: record you can have. So I still think these teams
- 9:26Speaker 3: are going to schedule to be 10-2, 9-3 at worst
- 9:30Speaker 3: and put them in a position to just accumulate wins
- 9:33Speaker 3: and get there. Hopefully I'm wrong. Maybe I'm wrong. But
- 9:38Speaker 3: I think we're going to see a minimal bump And
- 9:40Speaker 3: like the Texas, Ohio State type non-conference games.
- 9:43Speaker 6: Yeah, Bear, I think the biggest problem is college football
- 9:45Speaker 6: knows that they have us no matter what, where people
- 9:48Speaker 6: could say who wants an expanded playoffs. And then when,
- 9:52Speaker 6: like last year, if we get USC-Arizona, a 16-17 matchup,
- 9:58Speaker 6: the majority of the country is going to watch that.
- 10:00Speaker 6: game regardless. Mikey, I'm fascinated by the matchup you said, Miami-Iowa,
- 10:04Speaker 6: because I'm thinking... Miami couldn't possibly play an offense worse
- 10:08Speaker 6: than Texas A & M' s.
- 10:09Speaker 9: Offense last year. And then intro Kirk Ferentz in Iowa.
- 10:14Speaker 9: I mean, Cristobal would be on his third playoff consecutive.
- 10:18Speaker 9: I mean, I'm looking at the AP Bowl from two
- 10:21Speaker 9: years ago.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Just two years ago.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Here are teams who were ranked 20 through 24, Bear.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Syracuse would have been in. Army would have been in.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Missouri would have been in. UNLV would have been in.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Memphis would have been in. This is, what are we doing?
- 10:36Speaker 2: Seriously.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Bear, Army in 2024 would have traveled to Tuscaloosa.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Oh, what a game.
- 10:45Speaker 4: What's the spread in that game?
- 10:47Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, yeah. Bama minus 17, probably somewhere. And you
- 10:54Speaker 3: can hate the Bulls. You can say there are too
- 10:56Speaker 3: many Bulls. And once Christian McCaffrey opted out that one year,
- 11:00Speaker 3: I think it was the Sun Bulls. people started to realize, oh,
- 11:03Speaker 3: I don't need to play in these games if I'm
- 11:04Speaker 3: not getting anything out of it. But at least the
- 11:07Speaker 3: bowl system, you tried to pit, like, Big Ten 3
- 11:11Speaker 3: versus SEC 3, like, comparable, compelling, or you would now, like,
- 11:17Speaker 3: get compelling-type matchups. So, like, if Texas or Texas A &
- 11:21Speaker 3: M hadn't played against each other for a while, maybe
- 11:24Speaker 3: we'd try and pit them together in a bowl game. Like,
- 11:26Speaker 3: we're not getting, like, compelling, like, close matchups. Like, I
- 11:31Speaker 3: think I saw last year North Texas would have played Alabama.
- 11:36Speaker 3: That's a three-touchdown spread. I saw someone arguing you brought
- 11:42Speaker 3: up Iowa. Someone brought up about how Iowa would have
- 11:46Speaker 3: been ranked ahead of Tulane last year in the rankings.
- 11:52Speaker 3: The thing is, you're bringing up the Oregon example. Iowa
- 11:56Speaker 3: lost to Oregon on the last second on a field goal.
- 12:00Speaker 3: against Oregon. Oregon played JMU in the playoff and beat
- 12:05Speaker 3: them by like three touchdowns, and it wasn't even that close.
- 12:08Speaker 3: So this is not access for the group of six
- 12:12Speaker 3: to get more teams in the playoff. This can be
- 12:15Speaker 3: a lot of things, but it's certainly not that.
- 12:17Speaker 8: Bear, something we discuss a lot on this show is
- 12:20Speaker 8: coaches on the hot seat and stuff. And as Stu
- 12:23Speaker 8: Gotts pointed out, you're going to get a lot of
- 12:25Speaker 8: coaches saying, I get to keep my job. I made
- 12:27Speaker 8: the playoff. now that it's 24, how do you think
- 12:31Speaker 8: we need to move the line for coaches to not
- 12:34Speaker 8: just say you don't need to make the playoff, but
- 12:36Speaker 8: you need to do X in order to consider a
- 12:40Speaker 8: successful season?
- 12:41Speaker 3: It's clearly not going to be acceptable at a lot
- 12:44Speaker 3: of places, even in the SEC, to sneak in the
- 12:47Speaker 3: playoff at 8-4 and then lose your first game. I
- 12:51Speaker 3: think in a weird sense, it puts more pressure on
- 12:56Speaker 3: these coaches now. Because making the playoff is not going
- 13:00Speaker 3: to be enough. And oh, by the way, if you
- 13:03Speaker 3: don't make the playoff, we're now in a 2014 playoff.
- 13:06Speaker 3: You can't get in, you're gone. I think in a
- 13:11Speaker 3: roundabout way, it's going to have a negative effect on
- 13:15Speaker 3: maybe coaching longevity. And maybe we see now, maybe these coaches'
- 13:21Speaker 3: salaries and these buyouts maybe they come down a little bit.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Maybe they aren't as relevant and prevalent as they are.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Maybe more money is put into bringing in players in
- 13:33Speaker 3: the portal and pay-per-play, whatever you're going to be recruiting,
- 13:36Speaker 3: whatever you're going to do. And the focus maybe shifts
- 13:38Speaker 3: a little bit on building the team as opposed to
- 13:42Speaker 3: paying a coach so much. Because I think what we've
- 13:45Speaker 3: seen in recent years is you've got to have, whoever
- 13:48Speaker 3: your coach is, you've got to have players and you've
- 13:50Speaker 3: got to have a roster to And if the money
- 13:52Speaker 3: is kind of negligible and you're not really going to
- 13:54Speaker 3: be bringing in any more money with this new playoff system,
- 13:57Speaker 3: maybe it's going to kind of be like a reallocation
- 13:59Speaker 3: of assets.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Just trying to think of some of the positives here. Taylor,
- 14:03Speaker 1: if Oregon somehow crept back into the top 24 this
- 14:07Speaker 1: year and there was a 2014 playoff, in place right now.
- 14:12Speaker 1: So let's say they get to like number 22. No
- 14:14Speaker 1: one wants to face Oregon in the first round.
- 14:17Speaker 5: I'm trying to do this like the NCAA tournament.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:20Speaker 6: But bear, you say that because it's the Oregon brand.
- 14:23Speaker 6: Anybody who's watched this Oregon offense this year is like,
- 14:26Speaker 6: bring that offense into, into our stadium.
- 14:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 14:30Speaker 3: And I think there's certainly a question. I mean, it's
- 14:33Speaker 3: a great thing to throw out there because maybe you
- 14:36Speaker 3: do get a team or underachieved and then they do
- 14:38Speaker 3: sneak in. You've got to wonder about Dante Moore if
- 14:41Speaker 3: we're going to see him the rest of the year.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Maybe if they're in playoff contention and they go to
- 14:45Speaker 3: Ohio State and they're in the mix, maybe we see
- 14:48Speaker 3: him back for that game. But he also could be
- 14:51Speaker 3: in a spot now where you're like, you know what,
- 14:52Speaker 3: I came back for this year and it isn't working.
- 14:55Speaker 3: I'm just going to shut it down and work on
- 14:58Speaker 3: the draft. I did make a like kind of a
- 15:01Speaker 3: knee jerk mistake with my initial like emotional visceral reaction
- 15:06Speaker 3: yesterday and talking about like, there is going to be
- 15:08Speaker 3: a national title contender playing in a 2014 playoff in
- 15:13Speaker 3: the first opening and that out bracket round. And, and
- 15:16Speaker 3: clearly last year there would have been like Miami would
- 15:18Speaker 3: have been on the, in that first round, Notre Dame
- 15:21Speaker 3: would have been in that first round. Those two teams
- 15:23Speaker 3: clearly were national title worthy last year. Could have, could
- 15:26Speaker 3: have won. a national title. So it's really going to be,
- 15:30Speaker 3: I forgot how bad of a job the committee did
- 15:33Speaker 3: actually ranking these teams last year. Like the fact that
- 15:37Speaker 3: Alabama and Oklahoma.
- 15:38Speaker 5: And A & M.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Ranked ahead of Miami and Notre Dame was like ridiculous.
- 15:42Speaker 3: So I'll be curious to see how the committee moving forward,
- 15:46Speaker 3: if they kind of adjust how they're ranking teams, they
- 15:48Speaker 3: use a little bit more of an advanced metric type
- 15:51Speaker 3: style as opposed to just kind of like this, win-loss
- 15:55Speaker 3: circle of love like they did last year with the
- 15:58Speaker 3: SEC teams.
- 15:59Speaker 6: Bear, instead of a team like Oregon, who I think
- 16:02Speaker 6: teams wouldn't want to play, I think if you're looking
- 16:04Speaker 6: like if the season ends today, the most dangerous teams
- 16:08Speaker 6: would be the teams on like that 15-16 line, the
- 16:11Speaker 6: teams like Kentucky or the teams like Mississippi State, teams
- 16:14Speaker 6: that have that SEC-level talent, but then you're also pairing
- 16:18Speaker 6: them with coaches who are like, Will Stein has nothing
- 16:21Speaker 6: to lose if he's the lower-seeded team. And you see
- 16:24Speaker 6: it in a game like LSU where it's like– or
- 16:27Speaker 6: even the week before against South Carolina where it's like,
- 16:30Speaker 6: should we keep playing? Will Stein's like, no, let's go
- 16:32Speaker 6: for two and let's go for the kill now.
- 16:35Speaker 1: But 16 is fine. That's where they should draw the
- 16:38Speaker 1: line at 16. I'm fine with Kentucky going in, you know?
- 16:42Speaker 3: I think that– what Taylor said was the exact number. Like,
- 16:45Speaker 3: going from 12 to 16 feels like you could sell that.
- 16:50Speaker 3: You could be like, all right, look at last year.
- 16:52Speaker 3: You would have had, like, Texas, BYU, Vandy in that range. Like, okay,
- 16:59Speaker 3: they could get in and win a game. They're not
- 17:01Speaker 3: going to win a national title, but they could get
- 17:03Speaker 3: in and wouldn't embarrass themselves. But going from 12 and
- 17:07Speaker 3: doubling it to 24, I think that's what I have
- 17:10Speaker 3: the biggest issue with. There was– Doubling it to this
- 17:13Speaker 3: size and bringing in teams that clearly have proven that
- 17:16Speaker 3: they can lose to anybody and probably can't pull off
- 17:21Speaker 3: a win. They definitely can't win the title. Even this year,
- 17:25Speaker 3: I think there are like six teams, seven tops if
- 17:29Speaker 3: you're being generous, that can win the national title. So really,
- 17:33Speaker 3: you're going to have five teams, maybe six teams in
- 17:35Speaker 3: the playoff this year that have no chance of winning
- 17:37Speaker 3: the national title. But OK, yeah. Put them in any way.
- 17:41Speaker 3: They've had a great year. It's just you're ranking the
- 17:44Speaker 3: top 12. So out of 16 felt like it would
- 17:50Speaker 3: be a much better number.
- 17:51Speaker 1: So just going back to last year, if we had
- 17:54Speaker 1: a 16-team playoff, Virginia gets in. A three-loss Virginia team
- 17:58Speaker 1: gets in. But if you go to 24, it's North Texas.
- 18:03Speaker 1: That's the difference. I mean, I'm okay with Virginia making
- 18:07Speaker 1: my college football playoff.
- 18:09Speaker 5: North Texas is where I draw the line.
- 18:12Speaker 8: North Texas was ranked 25th last year in the, in
- 18:15Speaker 8: the college football playoff committee.
- 18:16Speaker 5: So they don't get it. Well, AP has, I'm just
- 18:19Speaker 5: doing it.
- 18:19Speaker 3: How are we going to do that now? We're just
- 18:20Speaker 3: going to like a limit. Like we make it a
- 18:22Speaker 3: 2014 plan. So like, are we going to re-rank everything?
- 18:25Speaker 3: Do you just the top 24 and like cut it off?
- 18:27Speaker 3: So like, like the, The redheaded stepchild at number 25
- 18:30Speaker 3: who gets eliminated. You're the biggest loser. You're eliminated. You're
- 18:35Speaker 3: the next team out. Are we just going to make
- 18:37Speaker 3: it the top 24 now as opposed to the top
- 18:39Speaker 3: 25 so nobody feels bad?
- 18:42Speaker 8: I just love that last year it was Alabama, Oklahoma, Miami,
- 18:46Speaker 8: Notre Dame, Pennsylvania. that were screaming, we should get in,
- 18:50Speaker 8: we should get in. And last year we would have
- 18:52Speaker 8: had North Texas being like, how do you leave us out?
- 18:55Speaker 5: There's a year where Liberty would have had an argument.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Northwestern would have an argument this year.
- 19:02Speaker 3: You remember that? The poll game that Liberty played against Oregon.
- 19:07Speaker 3: I think Oregon just scored again. It is a completely
- 19:12Speaker 3: different sport. what these G6 teams or programs are playing
- 19:16Speaker 3: now compared to what the Power Four is. And that's
- 19:18Speaker 3: what the portal has done. And I am curious to
- 19:22Speaker 3: see moving forward, and I know we're talking playoff, but
- 19:26Speaker 3: just being that the sport is getting blown up and
- 19:29Speaker 3: we're just redoing everything. I know Mike Ryan has brought
- 19:34Speaker 3: up about the idea of playing bowl games before the year,
- 19:37Speaker 3: which I think has some merit and that these bowls
- 19:39Speaker 3: want to stay in existence. You're bringing them in for
- 19:41Speaker 3: a trip before the year. First game of the year
- 19:44Speaker 3: is that bowl. Maybe that saves some bowl games. But
- 19:47Speaker 3: a lot of these G6 programs that lose guys in
- 19:51Speaker 3: the portal like i wonder if some of them like
- 19:55Speaker 3: the european soccer model where they're kind of used as
- 19:59Speaker 3: like feeders where to certain power four programs like if
- 20:03Speaker 3: you come here and you play well like Miami or
- 20:07Speaker 3: Florida State or whomever, Virginia Tech, Penn State, they're going
- 20:12Speaker 3: to look at you if you play well. You kind
- 20:13Speaker 3: of have an arrangement where if you play well here,
- 20:15Speaker 3: you're kind of going to transfer, and these smaller G6
- 20:19Speaker 3: teams maybe get a little bit of a transfer fee
- 20:23Speaker 3: to kind of help them stay afloat. So I don't
- 20:26Speaker 3: think there's anything that isn't on the table right now
- 20:29Speaker 3: to try and put the health of the sport in
- 20:32Speaker 3: a much better place than it is now.
- 20:34Speaker 8: I actually kind of love that. Like, come to North
- 20:36Speaker 8: Texas because I got a great relationship with Sarkeesian.
- 20:39Speaker 5: You do well here.
- 20:40Speaker 4: I can get you to Texas.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Right. Minor league system.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Yes. Yes.
- 20:44Speaker 5: I mean, it's happening already. Go ahead, Taylor.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Bear, on the topic that Stu Gotts brought up before
- 20:50Speaker 6: about having to readjust coaching expectations, you look at a
- 20:54Speaker 6: school like Penn State where James Franklin would have made
- 20:57Speaker 6: a 24-team college football playoff. seven times his last 10
- 21:02Speaker 6: seasons at Penn state, he would have had two first
- 21:05Speaker 6: round buys and five home playoff games over that stretch.
- 21:09Speaker 5: He'd be on the Mount Rushmore of Penn state football.
- 21:14Speaker 6: If the expanded playoffs was in 2014, when Franklin got
- 21:18Speaker 6: to Penn state, he would probably still be at Penn state, right?
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yes. Yes, absolutely. I mean, he was a, a fourth
- 21:28Speaker 3: quarter comeback away from playing for the national championship.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Right.
- 21:33Speaker 3: And the Notre Dame game. And then things just went
- 21:37Speaker 3: bad the following year. They lost some close games and
- 21:41Speaker 3: talent didn't pan out. But, but you're, but you're right.
- 21:43Speaker 3: I mean, you do, you do a retake on a
- 21:46Speaker 3: lot of these coaches tenure. They like James Franklin would
- 21:49Speaker 3: be considered one of the, one of the great coaches
- 21:52Speaker 3: in the game. I mean, maybe, maybe he is right now.
- 21:55Speaker 3: But he would have been like the James Franklin resume
- 21:59Speaker 3: would be throw up there. Ex-college football playoff birds, ex-college
- 22:03Speaker 3: football playoff wins, reach the quarterfinal or better.
- 22:07Speaker 7: In X egg.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Like X top 10, right? Like it all, it all
- 22:10Speaker 3: would have been there. And certainly the, the perception of
- 22:13Speaker 3: him certainly would have been gone from like a guy
- 22:15Speaker 3: who can't win the big game to, wow, this guy's
- 22:18Speaker 3: in the mix every single year.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Dabo's another guy. He would not be on the hot seat.
- 22:22Speaker 1: He'd be making his seventh consecutive college football playoff. I mean,
- 22:27Speaker 1: just look at the rankings since, like, 2020. It's crazy. Taylor,
- 22:30Speaker 1: put this on the poll quickly here before we get
- 22:32Speaker 1: to the NFL. The AP Top 25. Should we rename
- 22:36Speaker 1: it the AP Top 24?
- 22:39Speaker 5: Because I'm with you, Bear. It's ridiculous.
- 22:41Speaker 1: We're stripping some of the soul of college football. But
- 22:45Speaker 1: to Taylor's point, they've got us. And it doesn't matter.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Expand to 25 playoff teams.
- 22:50Speaker 5: They could expand to 68. No one's going to care.
- 22:53Speaker 5: I mean, seriously. Seriously.
- 22:55Speaker 3: I want Mikey to fill out. I want Mikey to
- 22:57Speaker 3: build the 25 team bracket. That's what I want. If
- 23:00Speaker 3: you want to expand to 25, I want you.
- 23:02Speaker 4: To– Playing game, done.
- 23:04Speaker 2: 24 versus 25 playing game.
- 23:06Speaker 1: I'm good with that. I'm good with the playing game.
- 23:08Speaker 1: It has stakes attached to it. I just want to
- 23:10Speaker 1: watch games that have stakes.
- 23:11Speaker 5: That's all. Let's go to the NFL here, Bear. What
- 23:29Speaker 5: are you thinking here?
- 23:29Speaker 1: We got your college picks on the college football show.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Woods to Godson, Bear. Last night was just a dreadful game.
- 23:37Speaker 5: I have no idea if the Broncos are any good.
- 23:39Speaker 1: But what are you looking at this week on the
- 23:41Speaker 1: NFL slate?
- 23:43Speaker 3: I like the Bills laying the four and a half.
- 23:46Speaker 3: I think that might be five now against the Raiders.
- 23:50Speaker 3: I think the Bills hung off of that Monday night
- 23:52Speaker 3: game like a lot of people are. It's kind of
- 23:55Speaker 3: assuming there's going to be a little bit of a drop-off.
- 23:58Speaker 3: But staying out west, I think, was a big thing
- 24:00Speaker 3: for them. And I think, ultimately, we're going to see
- 24:04Speaker 3: this Raiders team kind of tail down just a little bit,
- 24:07Speaker 3: point down. Obviously, both fans probably stayed out west, too,
- 24:11Speaker 3: and are going to be in Vegas. So there's no
- 24:13Speaker 3: field advantage for the Raiders. So I laid it with
- 24:16Speaker 3: the Bills. And then, I don't know, I held my nose.
- 24:20Speaker 3: It's like you're like doing every week. And I took
- 24:23Speaker 3: the Tennessee Titans.
- 24:24Speaker 10: Oh, wow.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Titans plus the seven. You know how this league works.
- 24:29Speaker 3: You have to look at the ugliest, worst, disgusting looking
- 24:33Speaker 3: team and say, that's who I'm betting this week. Like
- 24:37Speaker 3: the Colts, I think, I mean, I don't know how
- 24:39Speaker 3: they lost that game to the Steelers kicking all of
- 24:42Speaker 3: those field goals. I hear a lot of people talking
- 24:44Speaker 3: about using the Colts and Survivor, which I sure as
- 24:47Speaker 3: hell would not. I think that's a dangerous game. The
- 24:52Speaker 3: Titans have flung around, like, despite having no talent on
- 24:56Speaker 3: offense just enough. This could be a very scary, ugly,
- 25:01Speaker 3: close game here. And I don't know if the Titans
- 25:03Speaker 3: are going to win outright, but I could certainly look
- 25:06Speaker 3: up and see this being like 17-13 in the fourth quarter.
- 25:10Speaker 6: Bear, I saw a stat from John Breach on Twitter
- 25:13Speaker 6: where he said, we're getting an NFL rarity this week.
- 25:16Speaker 6: A team coming off an international game, the Eagles, has
- 25:19Speaker 6: to play a team coming off a bye, the Panthers.
- 25:22Speaker 6: This has only happened four times ever, and the team
- 25:25Speaker 6: coming off the international game is 0-4. When you factor
- 25:29Speaker 6: in that they're coming back from London and now they
- 25:31Speaker 6: don't have Jalen Hurts, are you surprised that the spread
- 25:35Speaker 6: is only Panthers minus three and a half?
- 25:39Speaker 3: No, just because I think there still is some respect
- 25:42Speaker 3: for that Eagles defense, and it is a home game.
- 25:46Speaker 3: But I will say that I do know there are
- 25:49Speaker 3: a lot of contests in Las Vegas that I am in,
- 25:53Speaker 3: and there are stale lines out there where you have
- 25:56Speaker 3: Eagles minus one and a half or two in a
- 25:59Speaker 3: lot of these contests. So I can promise you that
- 26:02Speaker 3: everyone who looks to attack and exploit these stale lines
- 26:06Speaker 3: are certainly going to take The Panthers plus the points here.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Now that they're you're getting five, six points of closing
- 26:13Speaker 3: line value. But this is what I'm this is what
- 26:15Speaker 3: I'm talking about, though, with the NFL. This would be
- 26:18Speaker 3: a perfect situation for like Vegas and the odds makers
- 26:23Speaker 3: to just come out on top. Because with the Eagles
- 26:27Speaker 3: winning this game, really surprise anybody.
- 26:30Speaker 4: No, no.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Nope, certainly not Vegas.
- 26:34Speaker 6: Tanner McKee might be an upgrade.
- 26:35Speaker 5: It might be, yes. Let's not do that to Jalen Hurts.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I mean, he's going through some serious stuff here.
- 26:40Speaker 6: No, well wishes to Jalen Hurts. I hope he gets better.
- 26:42Speaker 8: Well wishes, well wishes, but he might be an upgrade.
- 26:48Speaker 3: The transatlantic flight, I mean, we were recording bare bets
- 26:52Speaker 3: right when this news was breaking. And our initial thought
- 26:55Speaker 3: was like, oh, Aaron, yep, he's hurt, yep. And then
- 26:57Speaker 3: we didn't know what happened. And then like a minute later,
- 27:00Speaker 3: it's like, oh, he's got blood clots in his calf.
- 27:02Speaker 3: And I was like, I wonder if that, like the
- 27:05Speaker 3: transatlantic flight had something to do with that. A long flight.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I'm sure he, whatever. But that's some scary stuff. He
- 27:12Speaker 3: could be on blood thinners potentially for the rest of
- 27:15Speaker 3: his life.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Yeah, he might not play again. We don't know.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I mean, I remember Chris Bosh went through this and
- 27:20Speaker 1: planes are certainly a factor. And he was when he
- 27:22Speaker 1: was in studio with me and Dan and was talking
- 27:24Speaker 1: about how he might never be able to play basketball again.
- 27:27Speaker 1: It's too dangerous, you know. So our thoughts and prayers
- 27:31Speaker 1: were Jalen Hurts, because that's awful.
- 27:33Speaker 5: It really is. I didn't give it enough, I guess, enough.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I didn't stress the importance of what indeed happened to
- 27:40Speaker 1: Jalen hurts because this is not just, I'm going to
- 27:43Speaker 1: miss a game or two. This is a career threatening injury.
- 27:46Speaker 1: So bear, take your betting hat off.
- 27:49Speaker 5: Okay.
- 27:50Speaker 1: As we do a clunky transition out of a serious topic,
- 27:53Speaker 1: but take the betting hat off, put your fan hat on.
- 27:56Speaker 5: Do the jets have a chance at new England?
- 28:00Speaker 3: Yes, I think they do. I mean, the, the, the
- 28:03Speaker 3: Patriots coming off of, couple of nice wins, people feeling
- 28:07Speaker 3: pretty high about them right now. But I think that
- 28:11Speaker 3: that Jets defense could still give May and an offensive
- 28:15Speaker 3: line that's down some guys or down on the backfield.
- 28:18Speaker 3: This can certainly be another one of those close, ugly
- 28:21Speaker 3: type games. And I think defensively the Jets have some
- 28:25Speaker 3: guys who could give them problems. Now, can the Jets
- 28:27Speaker 3: score enough points with Hall and A.D. Mitchell and those
- 28:30Speaker 3: guys still out? And probably if Kenyon Sadiq, I would think,
- 28:32Speaker 3: is out as well.
- 28:34Speaker 10: No.
- 28:35Speaker 3: But it would not shock me at all to see
- 28:37Speaker 3: the Jets go up there and win this game.
- 28:39Speaker 8: Bear, apart from a Week 18 game against Bailey Zappi
- 28:43Speaker 8: in the snow, the last time the Jets won in
- 28:47Speaker 8: New England was the divisional round in 2010.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Can't wait. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:56Speaker 3: And i was there for the monday night game about
- 28:59Speaker 3: six weeks beforehand when when unfortunately i just left at
- 29:03Speaker 3: halftime because 45 three right and it wasn't even that
- 29:07Speaker 3: close i'm like you know what it's one road in
- 29:11Speaker 3: one more one road out because i'm not extending my
- 29:16Speaker 3: evening to any more misery i don't need any any
- 29:18Speaker 3: post-game traffic but yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 8: That is not a microcosm of the jets in new
- 29:22Speaker 8: england one road in one road out and i don't
- 29:24Speaker 8: know what.
- 29:24Speaker 2: It is it's a loss.
- 29:28Speaker 6: To bear's credit our friend aaron chats at ftn has
- 29:32Speaker 6: the patriots dvoa at six defensively and their offensive dvoa
- 29:38Speaker 6: at 25th the jets are 14 in offensive DVOA and
- 29:42Speaker 6: then their third defensive DVOA. So like this Jets defense.
- 29:46Speaker 5: How does that mean?
- 29:47Speaker 8: I was going to say, you just, you just threw
- 29:49Speaker 8: a lot of letters and numbers at me.
- 29:51Speaker 4: And all I'm going to say is.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Jets lose i'm dizzy i mean.
- 29:56Speaker 3: So you guys don't know what dvoa.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Is i don't care what he said a lot.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Of it what is it it's a granular level uh
- 30:04Speaker 3: play-by-play data looking at like win probability and advanced stuff
- 30:10Speaker 3: and you create a metric based on the play-by-play as
- 30:13Speaker 3: to how strong or weak teams might be he he
- 30:17Speaker 3: aaron is Aaron's unbelievable. Have you had Aaron on the show?
- 30:20Speaker 5: Yes, we love him.
- 30:23Speaker 3: He has these things where last week he was doing
- 30:27Speaker 3: the Bucs and the Texans were the third and fourth
- 30:31Speaker 3: best 0-4 teams in DVOA history going back to 1978.
- 30:37Speaker 3: The filters and information that he can give and my
- 30:41Speaker 3: joke this week was I want to know if the
- 30:45Speaker 3: Texans are indeed the best 1-4 team. In DVOA history.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 30:50Speaker 1: That's why it was one of my games of the
- 30:51Speaker 1: week yesterday, Mikey. That Texan team. They're legit, man.
- 30:56Speaker 5: D-O-V-A? What is it? Dova?
- 30:59Speaker 6: DVOA.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Sorry. I'm still confused.
- 31:04Speaker 3: It's like the anti-JZ HOVA.
- 31:06Speaker 5: Mikey doesn't want to hear any of it, and I'm
- 31:08Speaker 5: not certain I do either.
- 31:09Speaker 1: But when you talk about the best 1-4-0-3 team, that's
- 31:13Speaker 1: something I can wrap my head around.
- 31:15Speaker 4: Yes. Just tell us that.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Are the 1995 Jets the best 1-15 team of all time?
- 31:24Speaker 1: I love how Mikey remembered that Jet lost to the
- 31:27Speaker 1: exact points that were scored against him.
- 31:30Speaker 5: It has stuck with him for that long. They all do.
- 31:35Speaker 5: That's what happens when you're this bad. All right, Bear,
- 31:37Speaker 5: enjoy the weekend.
- 31:38Speaker 1: It's a decent football weekend, not a great one.
- 31:41Speaker 5: No, you're taking the Titans. Yes. Enjoy the weekend, my friend.
- 31:46Speaker 1: We'll talk to you on Monday for college football with
- 31:49Speaker 1: Stu Gatz and Bear.
- 31:50Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 31:52Speaker 1: It is time for this week's edition of Stu Ya Gatz.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Let's start with college football here, and all lines are
- 31:57Speaker 1: courtesy of our friends over at FanDuel and the FanDuel Sportsbook,
- 32:00Speaker 1: four and four in college last week.
- 32:01Speaker 5: We'll get to the NFL here in just a second.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Let's start with the big game of the weekend. Ohio
- 32:06Speaker 1: State minus three and a half at Indiana. I love
- 32:09Speaker 1: Ohio State here. They have some pressure on them. They
- 32:11Speaker 1: cannot afford to lose another game here. Buy it down
- 32:14Speaker 1: to three. Take Ohio State.
- 32:16Speaker 5: They win.
- 32:16Speaker 1: They cover Ohio State by 10 points on the road. Texas,
- 32:21Speaker 1: minus 11.5. They're taking on Florida at home. Buy it
- 32:24Speaker 1: down to 11.
- 32:26Speaker 5: Take the Longhorns.
- 32:27Speaker 1: Texas wins, and they cover Texas by 17 points at home. SMU, 9.5,
- 32:33Speaker 1: minus 9.5. They're taking on Virginia. Virginia, not as good
- 32:37Speaker 1: as I thought Virginia was going to be, and SMU
- 32:39Speaker 1: is a sneaky good team. Take SMU here. They win
- 32:42Speaker 1: and cover Texas. They win by 14 points. Tennessee, plus 7.5.
- 32:47Speaker 1: They're taking on Alabama, coming off that big game against Georgia.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Alabama wins the game. Tennessee covers, buy it up to 8. Alabama,
- 32:56Speaker 1: by a field goal. Mississippi, we forgot about them. And
- 32:59Speaker 1: their quarterback, minus 5.5. They're at home. They're taking on Missouri.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Mississippi wins and covers. They win by 11 points at home.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Texas Tech starting to get hot.
- 33:11Speaker 5: Heating up. Getting hot at the right time.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Minus 16.5. They're taking on Arizona State. Or 15.5. Taking
- 33:18Speaker 1: on Arizona State. Buy it down to 15. Take Tech.
- 33:21Speaker 1: They win by 21 points. Taylors, North Carolina Tar Heels.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Big game for a college basketball game.
- 33:28Speaker 5: They're taking on Duke. They're at Duke.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I like Carolina. I like Belichick. Plus 3.5. Buy it
- 33:35Speaker 1: up to 4. I don't know why I'm telling you
- 33:37Speaker 1: to do that. Carolina going to win the game outright.
- 33:39Speaker 1: They win by a field goal at Duke. Baylor, minus 5.5.
- 33:44Speaker 5: Take it on TCU.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Baylor wins and covers Baylor by 14 points. Another big game.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Notre Dame, minus 10.5. At BYU, I think Notre Dame
- 33:54Speaker 1: might be the most talented team in the country, them
- 33:56Speaker 1: or Miami. I'm not certain about BYU. Notre Dame, buy
- 34:00Speaker 1: it down to 10.
- 34:01Speaker 5: They win.
- 34:01Speaker 1: They cover the Fighting Irish by 14 points on the road.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Bob Chesney, I love that guy. UCLA, he is a
- 34:09Speaker 1: good-looking coach. Minus two and a half against Wisconsin. Take UCLA.
- 34:13Speaker 1: The Bruins win and cover UCLA by eight points at home.
- 34:17Speaker 1: And finally, Kentucky, Will Stein, plus 6.5 at Oklahoma. Letdown
- 34:23Speaker 1: spot for the Sooners. Kentucky is fighting for a playoff spot.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Buy it up to 7. Oklahoma wins. Kentucky covers Oklahoma
- 34:33Speaker 1: by a field goal at home. Let's get to the NFL. Mikey,
- 34:37Speaker 1: I was 5-0 last week.
- 34:39Speaker 5: I am proud. 5-0.
- 34:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 34:41Speaker 5: I'm going to keep it at 5, okay?
- 34:42Speaker 1: I don't want to mess with a good thing. So
- 34:44Speaker 1: five games here in the NFL. Again, 5-0 a week ago. Giants,
- 34:49Speaker 1: minus 1.5. They're taking on the Saints. We thought the
- 34:52Speaker 1: Saints would be better.
- 34:53Speaker 5: They're not. We thought the Giants would be worse. They're better.
- 34:56Speaker 5: How about that?
- 34:57Speaker 1: Giants win the game, and they cover Giants by six
- 35:00Speaker 1: points at home. The Rams, minus 12.5. They are taking
- 35:04Speaker 1: on the Cardinals. The Cardinals stink. I'm not certain about
- 35:07Speaker 1: the Rams, but I know the Cardinals are bad.
- 35:09Speaker 5: Rams minus 12.5. They win.
- 35:12Speaker 1: They cover the Rams by 21 points. Bills at Raiders
- 35:16Speaker 1: minus 5.5. I love Josh Allen. I love the Bills.
- 35:21Speaker 1: I am not certain. Like, the Raiders are going to
- 35:22Speaker 1: be tough to recover after getting off to a good
- 35:25Speaker 1: start and losing a couple of games here.
- 35:27Speaker 5: I just think Josh Allen is that good. Buffalo wins.
- 35:29Speaker 1: They cover the Bills by 14 points on the road.
- 35:33Speaker 1: The Chiefs, minus 7.5 against the lousy Chargers team. Buy
- 35:37Speaker 1: it down to 7, but there's really no need. The
- 35:39Speaker 1: Chiefs win by 21 and cover the spread. And finally,
- 35:43Speaker 1: the Steelers, minus 2.5 at the Bucs without Baker Mayfield.
- 35:48Speaker 5: Aaron Rodgers having.
- 35:49Speaker 1: A sneaky good season. The Steelers, a sneaky good team.
- 35:54Speaker 1: The Steelers win and cover. They beat the Bucs by
- 35:57Speaker 1: 10 points on the road. Those are the picks, everyone.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Good luck.
- 36:05Speaker 5: Stugatz here.

- 36:10Speaker 1: How rewarding are we talking? More rewarding than a touchdown
- 36:13Speaker 1: with time expiring? More rewarding than an 18-point comeback? Maybe
- 36:18Speaker 1: even more rewarding than an O-lineman catching a touchdown.
- 36:22Speaker 5: I mean, come on.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Everyone loves a big man touchdown. And this NFL season,
- 36:27Speaker 1: that feeling doesn't stop on the field. Look out for

- 37:25Speaker 4: is the head football coach at Northwestern.
- 37:32Speaker 3: David Braun joins us right now.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Coach, you cracked the AP Top 25. I'm sure you
- 37:50Speaker 1: don't care about that. I'm sure you tell your team
- 37:51Speaker 1: not to pay attention to any of that.
- 37:53Speaker 5: Am I correct?
- 37:55Speaker 7: You are exactly correct.
- 37:57Speaker 10: I wish you could have been in our staff meeting
- 37:59Speaker 10: on Sunday and our team meeting on Monday. It was
- 38:01Speaker 10: very direct that if we hear any chatter of that
- 38:03Speaker 10: around here, I'm coming after you. We got to stay
- 38:06Speaker 10: focused one day at a time. But you must have
- 38:09Speaker 10: been listening in, Stu, guys.
- 38:11Speaker 1: No, I just know how coaches think, and I know
- 38:13Speaker 1: they don't want to talk about that stuff. And they
- 38:15Speaker 1: don't want their teams to get too high on it, right?
- 38:17Speaker 1: That's why you tell them to stop paying attention to it.
- 38:21Speaker 10: I think it's one of those things that's really important
- 38:24Speaker 10: in the offseason, even leading into the season. We do
- 38:28Speaker 10: want to dream big, and we do want to redefine
- 38:30Speaker 10: the expectations around this program. This program has achieved so
- 38:35Speaker 10: many things, but going back to Coach Barnett, when he
- 38:39Speaker 10: coined the phrase of expect victory, people looked at him
- 38:42Speaker 10: like he was crazy. But look what that team did
- 38:45Speaker 10: and look how that's built over the years with Coach
- 38:47Speaker 10: Walk and with Coach Fitz. And the program has achieved
- 38:50Speaker 10: great things, but there's also this opportunity to redefine our expectations.
- 38:56Speaker 10: But when you get into the season, it's so critical
- 38:58Speaker 10: that us as coaches and players are just focused on
- 39:02Speaker 10: you know, our habits, our preparation, our process. And I
- 39:05Speaker 10: know that's so cliche, but it matters because it's really
- 39:08Speaker 10: easy to get distracted for sure.
- 39:10Speaker 1: What is Chip Kelly, who is your offensive coordinator, what
- 39:13Speaker 1: has he meant to that program, to you as a
- 39:16Speaker 1: head coach, to have another guy with head coaching experience
- 39:19Speaker 1: on the sidelines and a lot of it, both at
- 39:21Speaker 1: college and the NFL, what has he meant to you
- 39:23Speaker 1: guys and that program?
- 39:25Speaker 10: It's, he's been transformational, you know, and and going through
- 39:28Speaker 10: that process and making a decision to make a change.
- 39:32Speaker 7: Um, and just looking at Northwestern offense over the last.
- 39:35Speaker 10: Decade, you know, we, we, we knew that we needed some,
- 39:40Speaker 10: some form of transformational change and chip is, is, is
- 39:44Speaker 10: all of that in terms of his, his, his understanding of, uh,
- 39:49Speaker 10: offensive structure and how to maximize the talent that you
- 39:52Speaker 10: have on a roster. And to be honest with you,
- 39:55Speaker 10: there was no doubt in my mind as Chip and
- 39:57Speaker 10: I had conversations that he was the right person at
- 40:00Speaker 10: the right time to lead our offense. What I didn't
- 40:02Speaker 10: fully understand is how much he was going to help
- 40:08Speaker 10: me as a head coach. I knew he had extensive
- 40:10Speaker 10: head coaching experience, but it was really the first time
- 40:14Speaker 10: in my career as a head coach that, you know,
- 40:16Speaker 10: I have someone on staff that I really can bounce
- 40:18Speaker 10: ideas off of, and we can have really healthy collaboration
- 40:22Speaker 10: and conversation around. The thing that's fun for me to
- 40:26Speaker 10: do is literally step in his office and say, Hey, Chip,
- 40:29Speaker 10: I need you to put your head coaching hat on.
- 40:31Speaker 10: And he'll give me this look of like, Dave, I
- 40:33Speaker 10: don't want to put that hat on right now, but,
- 40:37Speaker 10: but he does, you know, and, It can be as
- 40:41Speaker 10: minor as practice structure to things of how we continue
- 40:46Speaker 10: to build donor relations the right way, how we construct
- 40:49Speaker 10: a roster, how we navigate this new landscape of college football.
- 40:52Speaker 7: There's no doubt that he's made me better as a
- 40:55Speaker 7: head coach.
- 40:56Speaker 6: Coach, I love college football and you are a great
- 40:59Speaker 6: defensive mind, but even some of the formations that Chip
- 41:02Speaker 6: Kelly brings out, are you like, what the heck are
- 41:03Speaker 6: some of these?
- 41:07Speaker 3: Yes.
- 41:07Speaker 4: Yes.
- 41:08Speaker 10: I mean, I think guys, I have to tell you, like, honestly,
- 41:13Speaker 10: there have been times, whether it be sitting in an
- 41:16Speaker 10: offensive staff meeting or sitting in an offensive unit meeting
- 41:20Speaker 10: or watching a walkthrough in, in fall camp where I'm like, what,
- 41:25Speaker 10: in the actual, are.
- 41:27Speaker 7: We doing right now?
- 41:28Speaker 10: And, you know, it's, there, there's this, this part of
- 41:31Speaker 10: you that like wants to like rein it back in
- 41:33Speaker 10: and box it in. And the clarity that I've gotten
- 41:36Speaker 10: is like, you don't hire one of the most creative
- 41:38Speaker 10: football minds of all time and, and, and box that in,
- 41:42Speaker 10: you know, the, the creativity. And the fun part for
- 41:44Speaker 10: me is like, even out of practice, like the subtle
- 41:47Speaker 10: nudge from Chip, he's like, Hey, check this out.
- 41:49Speaker 3: You know?
- 41:49Speaker 7: And I'm watching, I was like, man, how do you
- 41:51Speaker 7: defend that? You know what I mean? Like that's, that's
- 41:53Speaker 7: the creativity that I love. He's, he's finding ways to
- 41:56Speaker 7: differentiate us.
- 41:57Speaker 10: And, uh, it's, it's, it's a reflection of him, the
- 42:00Speaker 10: offensive staff, but also our players of their willingness to
- 42:03Speaker 10: just lean into it.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Uh, I'll get to your game against Michigan state, which
- 42:08Speaker 1: is fascinating on a lot of different levels. I'll get
- 42:10Speaker 1: to that in just a second, but I just want
- 42:12Speaker 1: to go back to a couple of weeks ago. You
- 42:14Speaker 1: opened up the new stadium, uh, on the Northwestern campus.
- 42:17Speaker 1: It looks beautiful on television. Uh, You beat Penn State.
- 42:21Speaker 1: You beat them pretty good. And Chip really flexed his offense.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And you flexed your defense in that game. That game
- 42:27Speaker 1: in a new stadium went as well as it possibly
- 42:30Speaker 1: could for you, right?
- 42:33Speaker 7: It did, you know.
- 42:34Speaker 10: And I think something I had to guard against, our
- 42:37Speaker 10: players had to guard against, all of us had to
- 42:39Speaker 10: guard against was like this level of pressure in terms of,
- 42:44Speaker 10: you know, you're opening this new stadium. the best stadium
- 42:49Speaker 10: in all of college football. You're playing a great Penn
- 42:52Speaker 10: State team Friday night. And there's so much of you
- 42:56Speaker 10: that just wants to make sure that it goes right,
- 42:58Speaker 10: you know, to start this new era off the right way.
- 43:03Speaker 10: And I'm just really proud of our players and the
- 43:07Speaker 10: staff of you know, we, we told him, I said, guys,
- 43:10Speaker 10: our focus needs to be on us and it needs
- 43:12Speaker 10: to be on football. Like our job tonight is, is
- 43:15Speaker 10: to go win a football game. And that's where our
- 43:17Speaker 10: focus needs to be. But Stu gots to, to, to feel, um,
- 43:21Speaker 10: and see our students section, like the experience that our
- 43:24Speaker 10: students here at Northwestern were having, you know, as part
- 43:27Speaker 10: of a big.
- 43:27Speaker 7: 10 football program.
- 43:29Speaker 10: And truly like they, They're a part of this team.
- 43:32Speaker 10: They impact the game, and they've bought into that. And
- 43:36Speaker 10: to feel the energy in the community, we know this,
- 43:39Speaker 10: you know, college football in the right venue has such
- 43:43Speaker 10: an ability to bring community together in such a unique way,
- 43:47Speaker 10: and you could feel that. And we have felt that
- 43:50Speaker 10: in these first two home games, and I'm so excited
- 43:53Speaker 10: to see where we're going to take this.
- 43:55Speaker 1: You're getting emotional talking about it, just going back to
- 43:57Speaker 1: that first game. You were emotional walking through that tunnel, correct?
- 44:02Speaker 7: Without a doubt.
- 44:03Speaker 10: I mean, while walking out of that tunnel, running out
- 44:06Speaker 10: with the team, um, like it, it, it felt like
- 44:09Speaker 10: a dream.
- 44:10Speaker 7: It, it didn't seem real.
- 44:11Speaker 10: And then for us to execute the way that we
- 44:13Speaker 10: did and, uh, you know, to feel the energy throughout
- 44:17Speaker 10: the game and come away with the win. Um, you know,
- 44:19Speaker 10: I said a post game, it's, you, you, you, you
- 44:22Speaker 10: pray for opportunities like that. And just to, to hear,
- 44:25Speaker 10: to not only hear, but feel just that, that the
- 44:28Speaker 10: community and the buy-in, um, I said a post game,
- 44:32Speaker 10: you know, anyone that's on the fence of like, do
- 44:34Speaker 10: I need to check this out? Do I really want
- 44:36Speaker 10: to be a, be a part of this? Do I,
- 44:38Speaker 10: do I want to show up for games? Like don't
- 44:40Speaker 10: miss out there. There's something special going on in Evanston
- 44:43Speaker 10: right now.
- 44:43Speaker 5: What's the coolest thing in that new stadium? Is there
- 44:46Speaker 5: something that kind of stands out for you?
- 44:48Speaker 10: You know, gosh, we could be here for three hours,
- 44:51Speaker 10: but if I'm only allowed one, one answer that, that, that,
- 44:56Speaker 10: that student section, like just, I mean, They're standing up.
- 45:01Speaker 10: They're making noise. The thought behind it in terms of
- 45:05Speaker 10: what's going on pregame for the students. I mean, it's like,
- 45:09Speaker 10: it's incredible. And it's what we've dreamt of, of just,
- 45:12Speaker 10: this is such a unique place, such a special place.
- 45:15Speaker 10: But for our students here to feel like they have
- 45:17Speaker 10: a place that's for them on game day around college football,
- 45:21Speaker 10: it's incredible.
- 45:21Speaker 5: Yes.
- 45:22Speaker 4: Awesome.
- 45:22Speaker 6: Coach, how do you convince an entire locker room that
- 45:25Speaker 6: Northwestern can accomplish things that people have spent what feels
- 45:29Speaker 6: like decades telling them aren't possible.
- 45:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 45:33Speaker 10: You know, I, I think it starts with, with messaging
- 45:36Speaker 10: to the team in the off season. And, um, you know,
- 45:40Speaker 10: that that's the time that you talk about your goals.
- 45:42Speaker 10: You don't talk about your goals during the season. You
- 45:44Speaker 10: talk about your goals in the off season to make
- 45:45Speaker 10: sure that your actions are reflective of achieving those goals.
- 45:50Speaker 10: But it also comes down to recruiting as well. Like
- 45:53Speaker 10: any young man that I get a chance to sit
- 45:55Speaker 10: down with, uh, I ask him a simple question. Do
- 45:58Speaker 10: you think you're the right person to help us win
- 46:00Speaker 10: Big Ten championships? And that's a two-part question. If you
- 46:03Speaker 10: don't think you're the right person and you don't believe
- 46:05Speaker 10: that that's going to happen while you're here, then this
- 46:08Speaker 10: isn't the place for you. Because, you know, as our
- 46:11Speaker 10: team operates in the offseason, there's a mentality that everything
- 46:15Speaker 10: that we do better be reflective of competing and winning
- 46:17Speaker 10: Big Ten championships. And if you don't believe you're the
- 46:21Speaker 10: right person and you don't believe that's going to happen here,
- 46:24Speaker 10: you won't enjoy your experience here. And I think that
- 46:27Speaker 10: framing is really important just to make sure you're building
- 46:30Speaker 10: a certain level of belief that not only can we
- 46:33Speaker 10: compete with anyone in the country, but we can beat
- 46:35Speaker 10: anyone in the country.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:37Speaker 5: You can also point to Indiana.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Coach, if I told you like 10 years ago that
- 46:40Speaker 1: Indiana would be on top of the college football world
- 46:43Speaker 1: and you guys would be ranked inside the top 25,
- 46:45Speaker 1: you would have laughed me out of the room, man.
- 46:47Speaker 5: What Kurt has done.
- 46:49Speaker 10: What that program has done– You know, it's it's it's incredible.
- 46:55Speaker 10: But it's also a reflection of this new landscape of
- 46:58Speaker 10: college football. If you're fortunate enough to create alignment with
- 47:02Speaker 10: with your board, with your president, with your A.D., you
- 47:06Speaker 10: got the right people on board.
- 47:07Speaker 7: And there's a certain level of belief and investment.
- 47:11Speaker 10: You know, it's college football is is prime for anyone
- 47:15Speaker 10: having the opportunity to accomplish really special things.
- 47:17Speaker 1: I know you're focused on the next game, but we
- 47:19Speaker 1: had a discussion yesterday about who was going to be
- 47:22Speaker 1: the next Indiana, and Northwestern kept coming up.
- 47:24Speaker 5: It was myself, Bear, T-Bob, A-Bear.
- 47:27Speaker 1: We all thought Northwestern potentially could be the next Indiana.
- 47:31Speaker 6: Because of you, Coach.
- 47:31Speaker 5: Because of you, of course. Yes, that's right.
- 47:34Speaker 1: And the stadium and Chip Kelly and how beautiful that
- 47:37Speaker 1: campus is, city of Chicago. It really has all the
- 47:40Speaker 1: makings of a school that could have, you know, a
- 47:42Speaker 1: top-tier college football program.
- 47:44Speaker 5: It does, right?
- 47:46Speaker 10: You know, and you already alluded to, like right now,
- 47:49Speaker 10: laser focused on Michigan State.
- 47:51Speaker 7: But, you know, taking an opportunity to zoom out.
- 47:55Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 47:55Speaker 4: Like, why not us?
- 47:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 47:57Speaker 10: And we got the right people in place. We got
- 48:00Speaker 10: the best AD in the country in Mark Jackson. Our
- 48:02Speaker 10: new president, Meng Chang, like he's a competitor. He understands
- 48:07Speaker 10: the value of athletics and football on top of being
- 48:10Speaker 10: the right person, you know, at the right time for Northwestern.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:15Speaker 7: Why not us?
- 48:16Speaker 5: Why not you, right?
- 48:17Speaker 1: It's going to be an emotional game going against Michigan State.
- 48:21Speaker 1: You are coaching against the guy you replaced at Northwestern,
- 48:24Speaker 1: Pat Fitzgerald. That's going to be emotional for both of
- 48:27Speaker 1: you guys, right? I know you're tight. I know the
- 48:28Speaker 1: families are tight. That's going to be super emotional for
- 48:31Speaker 1: both of you guys.
- 48:32Speaker 10: Yeah, you know, it's one of those things that, you know,
- 48:36Speaker 10: starting off the week, you know, and I even spoke
- 48:38Speaker 10: about it with our staff and our team, you know, guys,
- 48:41Speaker 10: this isn't about me. This isn't about Coach Fitz. This
- 48:44Speaker 10: isn't about Aiden Childs going back to East Lansing. It's
- 48:47Speaker 10: not about those things. It's about the game in between
- 48:50Speaker 10: the white lines. But it is important to acknowledge it,
- 48:52Speaker 10: you know, because naturally there's going to be emotion tied
- 48:55Speaker 10: to that because, you know, there's relationships there, real relationships there.
- 49:00Speaker 10: But I think when you can acknowledge it and then
- 49:01Speaker 10: shift your focus to the things that really matter, it
- 49:04Speaker 10: positions your team to focus on the game. And that's
- 49:08Speaker 10: what truly does matter. But What I will say is
- 49:11Speaker 10: I'm not sitting in this chair right now with this
- 49:14Speaker 10: incredible opportunity without Coach Fitz. You know, he believed in
- 49:19Speaker 10: an FCS defensive coordinator, was willing to go out on
- 49:23Speaker 10: a limb and say, you know what, this guy can
- 49:24Speaker 10: do it in the Big Ten. And that's something I'll
- 49:26Speaker 10: forever be grateful for.
- 49:29Speaker 5: Go ahead, Taylor.
- 49:32Speaker 6: Coach, what does make your quarterback, Aiden Childs, special? Because
- 49:36Speaker 6: I remember watching him briefly at Oregon State and then,
- 49:39Speaker 6: as you mentioned, the past couple of years at Michigan State.
- 49:43Speaker 7: Yeah, number one, I think it's the right partnership.
- 49:46Speaker 10: It starts with Aiden, but the partnership between him and
- 49:49Speaker 10: Chip and then Jerry Neuheisel, there's just the right partnership there.
- 49:54Speaker 10: And the thing about Aiden that I think makes him
- 49:57Speaker 10: really unique and really special is.
- 49:58Speaker 7: He wants to be coached hard. He wants to be
- 50:00Speaker 7: told the truth. He wants to be pushed to his
- 50:02Speaker 7: absolute best.
- 50:04Speaker 10: And Chip and Jerry are going to do that.
- 50:06Speaker 7: But he doesn't want it sugar-coated.
- 50:08Speaker 10: Like, he doesn't want it, you know, spoon-fed to him. Like,
- 50:13Speaker 10: the volume of offense that we're asking him to operate
- 50:16Speaker 10: and asked him to operate from day one when he
- 50:18Speaker 10: started in the middle of spring ball, there was ups
- 50:21Speaker 10: and downs in spring. you know, there was ups and
- 50:23Speaker 10: downs over the summer, but his level of consistency, because
- 50:26Speaker 10: he's leaned into that challenge over fall camp and into
- 50:28Speaker 10: the season, I think it speaks to his competitiveness, his maturity,
- 50:32Speaker 10: his humility. And, uh, you know, that guy doesn't have
- 50:35Speaker 10: a C on his chest just because he's a starting quarterback.
- 50:37Speaker 10: He earned that, like his teammates voted that and his
- 50:40Speaker 10: ability just to connect with not just the offensive starters
- 50:44Speaker 10: or not just, you know, some guy like he has
- 50:46Speaker 10: an ability to connect with every single guy on this roster. And, uh,
- 50:50Speaker 10: you know, it's, uh, It reflects in his leadership.
- 50:54Speaker 1: His talent really jumps off the screen. I would say
- 50:56Speaker 1: there were some bumps in the road even early on
- 50:58Speaker 1: this season, but it seemed like against Penn State, everything
- 51:01Speaker 1: started to click for him. And he seems like he's
- 51:04Speaker 1: the most confident he's been since he's been at Northwestern.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Like right now, I have to guess, Coach, is the
- 51:10Speaker 1: most confident your quarterback has been since he arrived at Northwestern?
- 51:15Speaker 7: I would agree.
- 51:16Speaker 10: And, you know, I think it's, you know, when you're
- 51:19Speaker 10: starting quarterback, uh, models, humility, and confidence, which he does daily.
- 51:25Speaker 8: Yep.
- 51:26Speaker 10: Like that, that, that permeates throughout your entire team. And that,
- 51:29Speaker 10: that's what I love about this group. There's this level
- 51:31Speaker 10: of humility of like, we know we're far from a
- 51:33Speaker 10: finished product. We have so much work to do, but
- 51:35Speaker 10: there's also this underlying confidence of like, if we prepare
- 51:39Speaker 10: the right way and we take it one day at
- 51:40Speaker 10: a time, uh, we, we, we can beat anyone in
- 51:43Speaker 10: the country. And if, if we take that for granted
- 51:45Speaker 10: and lose that humility and, and think we've figured it out,
- 51:48Speaker 10: we can lose to anyone in the country, but Aiden
- 51:51Speaker 10: embodies that. And when you're starting, quarterback embodies that. It's
- 51:54Speaker 10: easy for the rest of the locker room to fall
- 51:56Speaker 10: in line.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Mikey A., I'm thinking it. I know you're thinking it.
- 52:00Speaker 1: I know Taylor's thinking it. We have a lot of obligations,
- 52:02Speaker 1: a lot of stadiums, a lot of games to go to.
- 52:04Speaker 1: But new stadium, Northwestern, Chicago. I'm thinking we take the show.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Top of the list.
- 52:12Speaker 4: Easily.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Well, we need the invite from Coach here. I'm thinking
- 52:16Speaker 1: we take the show. We do it live right from
- 52:17Speaker 1: the sidelines.
- 52:18Speaker 5: What do you think?
- 52:20Speaker 7: Let's go, man.
- 52:24Speaker 4: You said it. The invite's there.
- 52:26Speaker 7: You guys need to be here. Don't miss out. We
- 52:28Speaker 7: would love to have you.
- 52:29Speaker 5: All right.
- 52:30Speaker 1: How do you think Chip would feel if I asked
- 52:31Speaker 1: him if I could call a play?
- 52:32Speaker 5: The first play. What do you think? You know what?
- 52:35Speaker 10: I think you'd get a big smirk on his face
- 52:38Speaker 10: and politely say no.
- 52:41Speaker 5: I think you're right. Taylor, did you have something there? Yeah, Coach.
- 52:46Speaker 6: There's a Big Ten coach whose son is a commit
- 52:49Speaker 6: to your school. Any worry there that it might be
- 52:52Speaker 6: like a Trojan horse being sent.
- 52:53Speaker 5: Into your program? A spy!
- 52:55Speaker 4: A spy!
- 53:00Speaker 10: Technically, based on NCAA compliance, I'm not allowed to say anything.
- 53:06Speaker 10: What I will say is you learn a lot in
- 53:10Speaker 10: this chair. And you get a chance to build these relationships.
- 53:14Speaker 10: And my opportunity to get to know Coach Day over
- 53:17Speaker 10: the last, you know, going into year four now, I think,
- 53:21Speaker 10: you know, anytime that family gets involved and you're recruiting
- 53:24Speaker 10: someone's son, there can be a unique dynamic there. And
- 53:30Speaker 10: I think it's reflective of the level of trust that
- 53:33Speaker 10: I have in Coach Day, the way that he runs
- 53:35Speaker 10: his program and a level of respect, hopefully mutual respect. And,
- 53:40Speaker 10: you know, you find certain head coaches in the league
- 53:44Speaker 10: that you feel like you can lean on. And since
- 53:46Speaker 10: day one, Coach Day has been one of those guys
- 53:48Speaker 10: that I feel like has been willing to have real
- 53:50Speaker 10: conversations with me and helping me navigate being a head
- 53:53Speaker 10: coach in this league.
- 53:55Speaker 5: Coach, we're so happy for you. I'm so happy for you.
- 53:58Speaker 1: Congratulations. Good luck against Michigan State. It will be emotional
- 54:02Speaker 1: going up against Coach Fitzgerald, but I know you guys
- 54:05Speaker 1: love each other a lot. So I'm happy for you.
- 54:08Speaker 1: I'm happy for the school. I'm happy for the program.
- 54:10Speaker 1: And I do believe you're the next Indiana.
- 54:12Speaker 5: I do believe that. I firmly believe that. I think
- 54:14Speaker 5: you're the school that's next.
- 54:16Speaker 10: Well, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you
- 54:18Speaker 10: guys having me back on. It's always a pleasure, and
- 54:21Speaker 10: we can't wait to have you guys in Evanston.
- 54:23Speaker 5: All right, we're doing it.
- 54:24Speaker 1: I think the Iowa game, that's the game I have circled.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Iowa at home, yes? I mean, Taylor, we good?
- 54:30Speaker 4: I'm in.
- 54:31Speaker 5: Okay. All right, we're in.
- 54:34Speaker 1: We have made promises to five separate universities that we're
- 54:37Speaker 1: coming to one of their games, and we're getting short
- 54:39Speaker 1: on time.
- 54:40Speaker 5: We better get on it and get a road trip together. Coach,
- 54:42Speaker 5: thank you. Your game I will go to, okay?
- 54:44Speaker 1: Your game we'll be there for at the Iowa game.
- 54:48Speaker 5: Thank you for doing this, man. We appreciate it. Congratulations.
- 54:50Speaker 5: Good luck the rest of the season.
- 54:52Speaker 7: Thanks, guys.
- 54:53Speaker 10: All right.
