- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland after Bertie. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: A little thing we like to call the after Party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you for one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other the backyard to dig
- 0:42Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode we are talking about
- 0:46Speaker 1: Jeff Buckley, Paul Simon, Jennifer, Jason Lee's Georgia, a final
- 0:50Speaker 1: Celtics thought, and of course your voicemails, text, dms and
- 0:54Speaker 1: more and is always a whole lot of rosy. All right, Discos,
- 0:58Speaker 1: Let's get into it. Yes, yes, yes, Welcome to the
- 1:14Speaker 1: Disgrace LAMD bonus episode after Party Swimming Lesson especial. Let's
- 1:18Speaker 1: talk about Jeff Buckley. Jeff Buckley, what an incredible artist,
- 1:24Speaker 1: a very special singer, one of a kind, my wife's fave,
- 1:28Speaker 1: my buddy stinks fave, A man too pretty and too
- 1:31Speaker 1: talented and too real to be hated on because of
- 1:34Speaker 1: his talent ors good looks, because Jeff Buckley was all
- 1:37Speaker 1: of it. Man, He was the whole package. He was authentic.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And there are so many angles to dive into here
- 1:45Speaker 1: relative to the full Disgraceland episode that we just released
- 1:48Speaker 1: on Jeff Buckley, but I just want to dive into
- 1:51Speaker 1: this fact here. Okay, Jeff Buckley released one full album, Grace,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and then he disappeared and then he was found dead. Now,
- 2:00Speaker 1: a lot of stuff happened in between those things, and
- 2:02Speaker 1: we get into a lot of it in the episode.
- 2:04Speaker 1: But two hundred years from now, they're going to end
- 2:07Speaker 1: the Illustrated Jeff Buckley timeline with a couple of bullet
- 2:11Speaker 1: points that read just like that, he released one great album,
- 2:14Speaker 1: he disappeared for a couple of days, then they found
- 2:16Speaker 1: his drown body. Okay, do you notice something different there
- 2:19Speaker 1: in those descriptors than the previous ones? Very similar, except
- 2:23Speaker 1: in those last timeline descriptors. I added the word great
- 2:27Speaker 1: when describing Jeff Buckley's album Grace, because that is undoubtedly
- 2:31Speaker 1: what that record is great. Okay, nobody could sing like
- 2:36Speaker 1: Jeff Buckley, but impressive singers are a dime a dozen.
- 2:41Speaker 1: It's the artistry Jeff Buckley had, how he pulled together
- 2:45Speaker 1: all of these crazy influences, at least crazy for kids
- 2:49Speaker 1: of my generation. Led Zeppelin, Nina Simone, Agnostic, front Edith Paf,
- 2:56Speaker 1: He created this thing that was totally unique. It was
- 2:59Speaker 1: him elf himself as an artist, and of course that
- 3:03Speaker 1: great record Grace. We get into Jeff's influences pretty heavily
- 3:08Speaker 1: in the Disgracend episode. I'm not sure exactly why we
- 3:12Speaker 1: don't always do that. We always sort of hint at
- 3:15Speaker 1: more than hint, will list influences as they're pertinent to
- 3:18Speaker 1: the story. But it just felt right here, It feels
- 3:21Speaker 1: right now here in the Bonus episode two to talk
- 3:23Speaker 1: about it, because Jeff Buckley's influences were all over the place,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and I find it fascinating. Even if you didn't know
- 3:29Speaker 1: these influences, when you first heard Jeff Buckley, you sensed that,
- 3:33Speaker 1: like all the greats, there was a deep, deep, deep
- 3:37Speaker 1: reservoir of music understanding and relativity. That's how I felt, anyway,
- 3:42Speaker 1: when I first heard Jeff Buckley, I had Grace the album.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I had an advanced copy before it was released when
- 3:49Speaker 1: I was going to Northeastern. There was this older, way cooler,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and if I'm being totally honest, smoking hot Sony Rep
- 3:55Speaker 1: who also went to Northeastern. She interned at so while
- 4:00Speaker 1: she was going to end you, and she was into
- 4:02Speaker 1: Grace because it was about to come out on Columbia
- 4:05Speaker 1: and Sony owned Columbia. So we knew of Jeff because
- 4:08Speaker 1: of her, and we never heard anything like him before. Nothing.
- 4:13Speaker 1: This is the mid beginning of the mid nineties, early
- 4:17Speaker 1: to the mid nineties, when Jeff Buckley first came to Boston.
- 4:22Speaker 1: He played Johnny Dees in Davis Square Summerville, which, for
- 4:25Speaker 1: those of you who don't know, it's like a two
- 4:26Speaker 1: hundred and fifty capacity room. It's no longer there, closed
- 4:28Speaker 1: a couple years ago. It's like two hundred fifty capacity room,
- 4:31Speaker 1: like a blues room with like a kitchen they serve food.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Like a weird place for Jeff Buckley to play first
- 4:37Speaker 1: of all. So, like I said, though, like a two
- 4:40Speaker 1: to fifty cap might have been twenty people there, maybe less,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and we were there, of course, and holy shit, did
- 4:49Speaker 1: Jeff Buckley and his band bring it. And if I'm
- 4:53Speaker 1: not mistaken, it was the same band that was on
- 4:55Speaker 1: Grace And this is I checked. This is a month
- 4:58Speaker 1: or two before that album was even out, and my friends,
- 5:01Speaker 1: my friends and I we knew in the moment, we
- 5:03Speaker 1: knew we were seeing something great. I've seen a lot
- 5:06Speaker 1: of bands that went on to be huge later that
- 5:11Speaker 1: I didn't know, we're going to be huge. And then
- 5:13Speaker 1: I look back on now and I'm fond of like
- 5:16Speaker 1: I saw, you know, Rage against the Machine and the
- 5:17Speaker 1: first time they came to Boston, and I could go
- 5:19Speaker 1: on this is a list. I'm not going to do
- 5:20Speaker 1: that now. But the point is, with Jeff Buckley, it
- 5:24Speaker 1: was more than just these guys are gonna be this
- 5:25Speaker 1: guy's gonna be big. It was like, this is fucking special,
- 5:28Speaker 1: this guy is there's something extra happening here. And again,
- 5:33Speaker 1: this is a month or two before Grace was even out.
- 5:36Speaker 1: It was obvious to us. And I think it has
- 5:39Speaker 1: something to do with those influences. You know, even you
- 5:42Speaker 1: know singers and songwriters and musicians and bands, they don't
- 5:45Speaker 1: get up on stage and just proclaim what they're into.
- 5:47Speaker 1: You know, that'd be pretty silly, but you can kind
- 5:51Speaker 1: of sense it as a kid. You can sense it
- 5:53Speaker 1: from them from the stage, emanating from you can see
- 5:56Speaker 1: it in the way they carry their gear, what kind
- 5:59Speaker 1: of equipment they use, what type of instruments they use,
- 6:02Speaker 1: how they set their gear up on stage, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: how they engage with the crowd, what they talk about,
- 6:07Speaker 1: what riffs they fiddle with between between songs. And one
- 6:13Speaker 1: of the coolest things that we found out about Jeff.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And I know this is messed up, but I can't remember.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I can't actually remember if I met him that night.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I might have. It seems more likely than not that
- 6:22Speaker 1: I did, but I can't say for sure. I don't know.
- 6:25Speaker 1: But what I do remember is that again our friend
- 6:27Speaker 1: who I mentioned earlier, our friend from Sony, she was
- 6:31Speaker 1: with Jeff all day that day, and she told us
- 6:34Speaker 1: that all he wanted to do was driving around Boston
- 6:36Speaker 1: with her and her shitty little volkswagon and smoke grass
- 6:39Speaker 1: and listen to a CDC. And when I heard that,
- 6:42Speaker 1: I was like, this dude is one of us. It's
- 6:45Speaker 1: just it was like the telltale thing. Yeah, it's because Jeff,
- 6:49Speaker 1: Jeff Buckley's music. It sounded nothing like ac DC or
- 6:52Speaker 1: Leonard Cohen or Nina Simone or Agnostic Front. And of
- 6:55Speaker 1: course none of those artists sound like each other, but
- 6:58Speaker 1: they all share that same thing, that realness, so real, right,
- 7:02Speaker 1: that authenticity, that commitment to their craft, to their art,
- 7:05Speaker 1: to their standing in the music history canon. The Lower
- 7:08Speaker 1: East Side's Agnostic Front is the hardcore band, and who
- 7:12Speaker 1: was more hardcore than blues and soul singer Nina Simone?
- 7:15Speaker 1: And Nina Simone is so intense, But who was more
- 7:17Speaker 1: intense than Agnostic Front? See what I'm saying. Jeff Buckley
- 7:21Speaker 1: was part of that. His hero Jimmy Page recognized that
- 7:25Speaker 1: I read somewhere recently that the two of those guys
- 7:28Speaker 1: wept when they met each other, Not just Jeff Buckley,
- 7:31Speaker 1: but Jimmy Page of led Zeppelin, Satan Spawned himself, the
- 7:34Speaker 1: master of the Black Dog Alistair Crowley's mortal vessel. That
- 7:38Speaker 1: dude cried when he met Jeff Buckley, or so the
- 7:41Speaker 1: story goes. Fuck, I can come on, but only one record,
- 7:48Speaker 1: just Grace. The question is so obvious, I don't even
- 7:51Speaker 1: want to ask you, guys, but I'm going to anyways.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Is Jeff Buckley's Grace the greatest one and done album
- 7:57Speaker 1: by any artist of all time? Which other artist or
- 8:00Speaker 1: band released only one great record and then pieced out
- 8:05Speaker 1: the sex pistols? Never mind the Bullocks, Here's the sex
- 8:08Speaker 1: Pistols that record Lauren Hill. The miseducation of Lauren Hill
- 8:12Speaker 1: is that the whole list is that all of it
- 8:14Speaker 1: is Jeff Buckley's Grace better than those two records. Probably
- 8:20Speaker 1: maybe I don't know. I like it more than the
- 8:22Speaker 1: Lauren Hill record. I'll tell you that the sex Pistols,
- 8:25Speaker 1: though I don't know, it could be. And if not
- 8:28Speaker 1: one of those three who in which album? Six one
- 8:31Speaker 1: seven nine zero six six six three eight to leave
- 8:34Speaker 1: me a message or send me a text to let
- 8:36Speaker 1: me know or at disgrace lampod on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You can let me know there too. I'll be back
- 8:42Speaker 1: right after this. All right, you guys know the drill
- 8:57Speaker 1: six one seven nine zero six six six three eight
- 9:00Speaker 1: to send a text or leave a voicemail just like
- 9:03Speaker 1: Jason here from the seven to three.
- 9:05Speaker 2: One Hey, Jake, this is Jason from the seven to
- 9:08Speaker 2: three to one area code. I'm talking about Paul Simon
- 9:11Speaker 2: and an album that you might want to listen to
- 9:14Speaker 2: that is not Simon and Garfunkle at Night, not Graceland.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I'm a big Simon and Garfunkle fan. I'm a big
- 9:20Speaker 2: Paul Simon fan. But the best album single album you
- 9:24Speaker 2: should listen to by Paul Simon is probably There Goes
- 9:28Speaker 2: Ryman Simon from nineteen seventy three. That's got Coda chrome,
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's got loves Me like a Rock. It's also got
- 9:35Speaker 2: the great American tune on it that Simon and Garfunkle
- 9:39Speaker 2: did in their nineteen eighty one concert in Central Park.
- 9:43Speaker 2: But after that, if you wanted the second one in
- 9:47Speaker 2: nineteen seventy five, he did Still Crazy After all These Years,
- 9:51Speaker 2: which had the song still Crazy after all these years
- 9:54Speaker 2: and fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover. But it also
- 9:57Speaker 2: had a song that he and Garfunkle did again, the
- 10:00Speaker 2: first song they recorded that they had done together since
- 10:03Speaker 2: nineteen seventy that was called My Little Town and actually
- 10:06Speaker 2: appeared on a Paul Simon solo record and on an
- 10:10Speaker 2: Art Garfunkle solo record at the same time, so you
- 10:13Speaker 2: have the same song on two different records. It was
- 10:16Speaker 2: kind of interesting anyway. I hope you check those out
- 10:20Speaker 2: and I hope you like them. I love the Show,
- 10:22Speaker 2: I love bad Land, I love Disgraced Lands. I love
- 10:25Speaker 2: everything you do. Thank you Keith on doing what you're doing.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Rock on all right. Thanks Jason, there goes Rym and Simon.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Great recommendation, Thank you, Coda Chrome. I know that tune.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I know a couple of the other ones you mentioned
- 10:38Speaker 1: as well. Great songs. Again, these Paul Simon songs, they
- 10:41Speaker 1: come on. I'm here for them. I hardly ever skip them.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm down. I've just never I've never interacted with this
- 10:48Speaker 1: guy as an album artist, and I need to, still
- 10:51Speaker 1: crazy after all these years. I'll go to that one too.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Maybe there's a Paul Simon episode here, let me know,
- 10:57Speaker 1: let me know there's any fucked up, weird adjacent I
- 11:01Speaker 1: know Paul Simon never committed any real crimes or anything
- 11:03Speaker 1: like that or was arrested, I don't think, or anything
- 11:06Speaker 1: like that. But maybe there's some adjacent crime stuff from
- 11:10Speaker 1: the world that Paul Simon was in at the time
- 11:12Speaker 1: that would allow us to do a look into his
- 11:16Speaker 1: career or a particular moment in time in his career.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And then maybe I just had this idea paging mister
- 11:22Speaker 1: Zeh Lundy. Maybe it's a you know, maybe it's something
- 11:26Speaker 1: we do sort of in posts. We can't do it
- 11:29Speaker 1: like we did Sharon Tate and Mama Cass, but maybe
- 11:32Speaker 1: we can do some mirroring episode effect with the Carrie
- 11:35Speaker 1: Fisher episode with Paul Simon Disgraceland episode. Just a thought here,
- 11:41Speaker 1: I am. I'm just fucking iterating in public, making shit
- 11:45Speaker 1: in real time. I guess. I don't know who knows,
- 11:47Speaker 1: but I like the idea of a Paul Simon Disgraceland episode.
- 11:50Speaker 1: All right, let's check out Hal. Here at Hal had
- 11:53Speaker 1: to say from the four oh seven.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, this is Hal calling from Orlando, Florida. The
- 12:00Speaker 3: way you have the best fucking true crime rock and
- 12:04Speaker 3: roll podcast. Oh wait a minute, the only true crime
- 12:07Speaker 3: rock and roll podcast. What I want to say is
- 12:13Speaker 3: that in the early days season one of Disgraceland, when
- 12:19Speaker 3: you had a mere couple hundred followers on Facebook, I
- 12:23Speaker 3: messaged you and said that I think you should cover
- 12:26Speaker 3: the Almend brothers, and you responded me back politely and said, well,
- 12:31Speaker 3: what was the crime? So the crime that I said was, well,
- 12:35Speaker 3: you know, Red Dog got charged with murder and let
- 12:40Speaker 3: off on and sanity plead by a lenient judge in Georgia,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I believe. But anyway, so much has come to about
- 12:48Speaker 3: the Almond brothers.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Just wondering if you're ever going to do an Almond
- 12:55Speaker 4: Brothers Disgraceland, probably a two part or maybe a three parter.
- 13:02Speaker 4: I'm not sure how you and your writers get this
- 13:04Speaker 4: shit done, but I think it needs to be done,
- 13:07Speaker 4: and the only one that can do it, Jake is
- 13:10Speaker 4: you Almond Brothers. Give a dog a bone? Man.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I love you Hal from Orlando, Who love you brother?
- 13:19Speaker 1: Love you back? Hal? That's right, man, the only rock
- 13:21Speaker 1: and roll true crime podcast. Thanks for the long time listening,
- 13:25Speaker 1: Thanks for the Alman Brothers take, and for reminding me
- 13:28Speaker 1: about this. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, we will do
- 13:31Speaker 1: an Almond Brothers episode. You probably know this how but
- 13:34Speaker 1: we get into Dwayne with the Derek and the Dominoes episode. Yes,
- 13:38Speaker 1: the band, the Almond Brothers deserves a full episode, perhaps two,
- 13:42Speaker 1: definitely not three. I don't think we've ever done a
- 13:44Speaker 1: three part Well yeah, I guess we did those like
- 13:47Speaker 1: six part Stones and eight part Stones eight part Beatles episodes.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Never a three parter, but we're gonna look into it.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Can't say when, but we're on it. Hell tie on
- 13:58Speaker 1: the list. All right, let's check with the five oh three.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, this is Luisi from the five oh Tree
- 14:04Speaker 2: and I recently found your podcast. I love it very much.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I can't get enough.
- 14:09Speaker 2: And I was wondering if you've actually covered Elvis Presley,
- 14:13Speaker 2: and if so, what season an episode. I can't find
- 14:17Speaker 2: it anywhere if you have, and.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Including on Apple or Amazon Music, so anyway, let me know.
- 14:28Speaker 2: And yeah, thanks for telling the stories the way you do.
- 14:31Speaker 2: They're really awesome. I'm trying to watch the Elvis Presley
- 14:34Speaker 2: movie right now. I keep going to sleep every night,
- 14:36Speaker 2: but I love it and that it'd be cool to
- 14:38Speaker 2: hear your you tell the story because you do it
- 14:43Speaker 2: so well. Thank you so much, peace out.
- 14:46Speaker 1: All right, thanks for reaching out, Alicia. I've always said
- 14:49Speaker 1: that the last episode of Disgraceland will be on Elvis.
- 14:52Speaker 1: So if you see that Elvis Presley Disgraceland episode pop
- 14:56Speaker 1: up in your podcast feed, then you know I've left
- 14:58Speaker 1: the proverbial building. But but but, but fear not. I cover
- 15:03Speaker 1: Elvis extensively in my book Disgraceland Musicians Getting Away with
- 15:07Speaker 1: Murder and Behaving Very Badly. The first and second chapters
- 15:11Speaker 1: are dedicated to the King, and as it pertains to
- 15:13Speaker 1: your mention of the Elvis movie, I deal specifically with
- 15:18Speaker 1: Elvis's relationship with Colonel Tom Parker and I give my
- 15:21Speaker 1: take and my vision of what was and what could
- 15:24Speaker 1: have been. So check out the Disgrace Land book, Alicia.
- 15:27Speaker 1: You can get that on Amazon or wherever. All right,
- 15:31Speaker 1: let's do one more, This one from Providence from the
- 15:36Speaker 1: four oh one.
- 15:38Speaker 5: This is mackin Providence, a Celtic super fan. I went
- 15:42Speaker 5: to see. I was in the Boss Boston Garden every week.
- 15:51Speaker 5: The starting five were Larry Bird, McHale, Parish, DJ and Ange.
- 16:02Speaker 5: I caught up on all your podcasts last night because
- 16:04Speaker 5: there was no basketball to watch. Let's sucks think and
- 16:08Speaker 5: I listened to everything. I just finished up all your podcasts.
- 16:12Speaker 5: I'm looking I'm getting ready to listen to your bonus podcast.
- 16:15Speaker 5: That's your post that I think last night. You're the best.
- 16:19Speaker 5: I've been with you a long time. I never call
- 16:20Speaker 5: an ever write. I'm not on Twitter. I'm seventy one
- 16:23Speaker 5: years old rock and roller.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Okay, Mark, I'm not on Twitter either, man, not really.
- 16:31Speaker 1: I mean I am, but not really. But Mark, I
- 16:34Speaker 1: appreciate you sticking with me even though I bailed on
- 16:36Speaker 1: the Celtics. Sounds like you saw some amazing games back
- 16:39Speaker 1: in the day. I went to the Bird era games
- 16:41Speaker 1: once or twice as a very young boy. But I'm
- 16:45Speaker 1: as connected to the pure Scarnet Allen team. But that's
- 16:48Speaker 1: all gone for me now.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Man.
- 16:49Speaker 1: You know this, the Celtics are fucking dead to me
- 16:51Speaker 1: after that last series, and especially after coming out the
- 16:54Speaker 1: day after the Game seven loss committing to Missoulo. I
- 16:58Speaker 1: hate to celebrate anyone lose their job, or to wish
- 17:01Speaker 1: for anyone losing their job. It's on my place. I'm
- 17:04Speaker 1: not a Celtics fan anymore. If the Celtics want to
- 17:06Speaker 1: stick with this guy, go for it. But the commitment
- 17:09Speaker 1: to the Tatum Brown loser tandem as well, No, then
- 17:14Speaker 1: I don't even know what to say. Good luck, Mark,
- 17:15Speaker 1: I'm a Heat fan. What can I What can I say?
- 17:17Speaker 1: And they're fully in this somehow despite Jokovic's awesomeness. Jimmy
- 17:22Speaker 1: Bucket's Jimmy Buckets, Jimmy Buckets, appreciate you, Mark. All right,
- 17:26Speaker 1: let's do some texts, all right, New listener from the
- 17:29Speaker 1: five to three zero. Hey, this is Hector from Orland,
- 17:34Speaker 1: California's not how you say it, Orland Orland? Why would
- 17:37Speaker 1: it be Orland? It's r L A N D. It'd
- 17:40Speaker 1: be Orland, right, is it Orlando and you just forget
- 17:44Speaker 1: the Oh? Is there an Orlando, California that I don't
- 17:46Speaker 1: know about? Anyways, this guy Hector texting, I just recently
- 17:50Speaker 1: found your podcast and love your work and ho tell stories.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I've binged all your episodes for about two weeks straight
- 17:57Speaker 1: at work and home. Keep doing what you're doing. And
- 17:59Speaker 1: if i'm make one request, can we possibly do an
- 18:02Speaker 1: episode on Earl Salmon's aka dark Man aka DMX. Great,
- 18:08Speaker 1: great suggestion, Hector. Yes, we can do an episode on DMX,
- 18:12Speaker 1: and we will. Hector. Have you seen the documentary that
- 18:14Speaker 1: Bill Simmons made. It's fucking really good, really good. It
- 18:17Speaker 1: was on HBO for a bit. I'm sure it's on
- 18:19Speaker 1: HBO Max. Check that out, Hector. All right from the
- 18:22Speaker 1: four six, Hey, Jake, I absorbed your Nebraska episode with
- 18:26Speaker 1: Warren Zan's a couple of days after I finished his book,
- 18:28Speaker 1: Delivered Me from Nowhere. I'm one of those people who
- 18:31Speaker 1: thinks Nebraska is the best album ever recorded. Wow, that's
- 18:35Speaker 1: a statement. That's me saying that's a statement. Texter goes
- 18:38Speaker 1: on to say, it's the one that made me a
- 18:40Speaker 1: Springsteen fan. Me as well, man forty years I've been
- 18:43Speaker 1: listening to that record learning to play every song, and
- 18:45Speaker 1: at the end of your episode when you went into
- 18:47Speaker 1: that story that wove all the songs into a single narrative,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I lost my shit. I'd never heard that suggested before.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Did you come up with that idea or had you
- 18:55Speaker 1: heard it? Serious? Man? Seriously, man, it's like studying the
- 18:58Speaker 1: Zuppruter film and spotting us in JFK's hand that says
- 19:01Speaker 1: Lee Harvey did it. It was my favorite episode ever
- 19:04Speaker 1: in You're consistently great podcast. Thanks Bob from Missoula, Montana. Well,
- 19:10Speaker 1: thank you, Bob. Let's see here. What was the question
- 19:13Speaker 1: you asked? Did you come up with that idea? I
- 19:15Speaker 1: did come up with that idea, And I think you're
- 19:17Speaker 1: talking about the scripted full episode that we did where
- 19:21Speaker 1: we run everything through one narrative, right. I mentioned that
- 19:24Speaker 1: in the Warren Zanes episode, but we actually went and
- 19:27Speaker 1: did it, and I'm guessing you heard that and that's
- 19:29Speaker 1: what you're talking about again. The Springsteen episode. It's more
- 19:34Speaker 1: for those who haven't heard, there's a Springsteen Disgraceline episode
- 19:37Speaker 1: and it's about the characters mainly of Nebraska true crime,
- 19:41Speaker 1: both fictional and nonfictional. So check that out, all right?
- 19:46Speaker 1: What else we get? The six to ozho one writes,
- 19:49Speaker 1: when I was fifteen, I visited my Mormon cousin in
- 19:52Speaker 1: Texas and she played a bootleg cassette of Master P
- 19:55Speaker 1: Ghetto d In my world changed. I didn't jump in,
- 19:59Speaker 1: but I was open to more. That tape led me
- 20:01Speaker 1: to outcast Do or Die Twista, the late great Pimpse.
- 20:04Speaker 1: May he rest in peace and bunbe of Ugk. I
- 20:08Speaker 1: love me some og Southern rap, and my forty year
- 20:10Speaker 1: old heart still lives for those dirty, lyrical poems and
- 20:13Speaker 1: beautiful beats. That's fucking great, man. That's from the six
- 20:16Speaker 1: to oh one. Thank you for that text. It's gonna
- 20:19Speaker 1: make me go dig into some master P.
- 20:21Speaker 2: All right?
- 20:21Speaker 1: What else we got?
- 20:23Speaker 2: All right?
- 20:23Speaker 1: From the aight oh five? Hey Jake, thanks for your
- 20:25Speaker 1: recent disgrace That episode on George Harrison. He was always
- 20:28Speaker 1: my favorite beatle. I think you handled his demeanor with
- 20:31Speaker 1: the class that he deserves. Keep the stories coming, you
- 20:34Speaker 1: got it. Aight oh five. Just a quick programming note.
- 20:36Speaker 1: That wasn't actually a new episode. We released that back
- 20:40Speaker 1: in the end of twenty twenty one, if memory serves,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and it was when we were with Amazon exclusively, so
- 20:48Speaker 1: it was behind uh, it was behind the old Amazon
- 20:51Speaker 1: gate there, and we just put it back out into
- 20:53Speaker 1: the world, all right. From the five six to two.
- 20:55Speaker 1: This is Jose first and foremost. I think you have
- 20:58Speaker 1: an informative and entertaining podcast. When I was fifteen, that
- 21:01Speaker 1: was the time I discovered five great artists, Big l Atmosphere,
- 21:05Speaker 1: Reagan Youth, The Germs, Blackstar, and Immortal Technique. It was
- 21:08Speaker 1: a fusion of punk rock and underground hip hop. Plenty
- 21:11Speaker 1: of other artists came around, but those were a few. Lastly,
- 21:13Speaker 1: I sent you a message a few years ago, and
- 21:15Speaker 1: I have to say I'm in a much better place.
- 21:17Speaker 1: That's great, Hose. I'm fucking happy to hear that, man,
- 21:20Speaker 1: You're in a better place. And your note about the Germs.
- 21:23Speaker 1: I saw the Food Fighters a couple weeks ago, and
- 21:26Speaker 1: you know, mister Pat Smeer was up there kicking it
- 21:29Speaker 1: from the six one seven. Hey, Jake, it's Steph in
- 21:31Speaker 1: the six one seven. Well actually five, oh wait, but
- 21:34Speaker 1: I'll never give up my exchange. Where's the Arrowsmith episode?
- 21:37Speaker 1: The Toxic Twins, the bad Boys from Boston. We have
- 21:41Speaker 1: a running family joke that Stephen Tyler is really my
- 21:43Speaker 1: dad because he was so close with my mom, but
- 21:46Speaker 1: she was one of his dealers. Oh my goodness, the
- 21:49Speaker 1: band is blown apart and come together time and time again.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Come on, man, where's the big ten inch episode on this? Well,
- 21:54Speaker 1: you'll be happy. This episode's coming soon this season. In
- 21:58Speaker 1: a couple weeks, you will have this miss five oh
- 22:01Speaker 1: eight You're Aerosmith episode. It is a coming all right?
- 22:06Speaker 1: All right? How's that for some text? Did we do it?
- 22:09Speaker 1: Did we do all the things we needed to do?
- 22:11Speaker 1: Let me read some dms? All right, let's see. How
- 22:16Speaker 1: do I say this? Sd S tech seven sixty rights?
- 22:21Speaker 1: Are you planning on making an episode on Christopher Lee
- 22:24Speaker 1: at some point? Well, I can't say I am, because
- 22:29Speaker 1: I don't know who Christopher Lee is. He goes on
- 22:32Speaker 1: to say, my girlfriend tells me the story she's heard
- 22:33Speaker 1: about Christopher Lee are so crazy that you need several
- 22:36Speaker 1: episodes to scratch into the surface in his life. The
- 22:39Speaker 1: fact that I don't know who Christopher Lee is is
- 22:41Speaker 1: leading to me believe that maybe this is in reference
- 22:43Speaker 1: to bad Lands. If so, I apologize for crossing bonus episodes.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Someone tell me who Christopher Lee is? All right at
- 22:50Speaker 1: Chuck Destruction Rights. Also on Instagram, Hey running a few
- 22:54Speaker 1: episodes late. Started a new job on top of my
- 22:56Speaker 1: work for bands and tattooing. Wife wants to buy a house?
- 23:00Speaker 1: Cowboy Junkies did, Sweet Jane, Concrete Blonde did? Joey Ceb
- 23:04Speaker 1: also covered Cohen's Everybody Knows I'm the Pump Up the
- 23:07Speaker 1: Volume soundtrack by far one of the most cynical and
- 23:09Speaker 1: depressing songs by that epic man. Otherwise, keep it all up.
- 23:12Speaker 1: The new episodes are great. Also check out the Sweet
- 23:15Speaker 1: Things Great Band, especially for grooving through the afternoons. That's
- 23:18Speaker 1: a hell of it. Let's see that's how you do it.
- 23:20Speaker 1: I'm into that. That's good, you know. Comes in, tells
- 23:23Speaker 1: me what he's up to. He's got a new job.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I love that. Tells me he's got a little little,
- 23:28Speaker 1: you know, soft bitch about his wife. There, wife wants
- 23:31Speaker 1: to buy a house. Uh, goes into Cowboy Junkies, corrects me.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I think I asked if Cowboy Junkies do Joey No,
- 23:38Speaker 1: he tells me Concrete Blonde did.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I like that?
- 23:39Speaker 1: Why am I breaking down this direct message? I don't know.
- 23:41Speaker 1: It was a good one. I like this guy, Chuck
- 23:43Speaker 1: destruction right back, Chuck. What else we got here? All right?
- 23:47Speaker 1: From at Luke, I'm not going to read his last name.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Well done, Jake, Awesome show has always been listening to
- 23:53Speaker 1: Disgrace Sin since he started. I live in Australia and
- 23:55Speaker 1: traveled to Melbourne from Walligong to rehearse with my band Rockefeller.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It's a nine to ten hour drive. Whoa, that's a
- 24:02Speaker 1: fucking long way to drive to fucking practice. They have
- 24:06Speaker 1: this thing called Zoom. Just letting you know, just letting
- 24:09Speaker 1: you know, Luke, guys might want to try practicing on Zoom.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I've seen people do it. It looks fucking horrible, but
- 24:15Speaker 1: a nine to ten hour drive sounds horrible. We listen
- 24:18Speaker 1: to disgrace And all the time. Okay, the drive just
- 24:20Speaker 1: got better. It's a nine to ten hour drive and
- 24:22Speaker 1: we listen to disgrace And all the time to pass
- 24:24Speaker 1: the hours on the road. Anyway, keep it the good work.
- 24:26Speaker 1: I thought you might like to hear two songs we
- 24:28Speaker 1: have just finished recording. We're gonna release them as a
- 24:30Speaker 1: seven inch single. Thanks mate. I'm reading this in real time.
- 24:35Speaker 1: For the first time, I have not listened to these songs.
- 24:38Speaker 1: It's from Rockefella. Looks like these are unreleased songs, so
- 24:44Speaker 1: I will check them out, man, I'll check them out.
- 24:46Speaker 1: A report back, or if anyone else knows Rockefeller and
- 24:48Speaker 1: wants to write in, you can do that. All right,
- 24:50Speaker 1: let me know what you think of Rockefeller. All right,
- 24:52Speaker 1: let's do a couple more here. I'm going to head
- 24:54Speaker 1: over to the Facebook box and it's gonna fucking send
- 24:57Speaker 1: me on this wild goose chase into this other fucking
- 25:00Speaker 1: app to read my messages, which I've complained about in
- 25:03Speaker 1: the past. Yes, I'm going to continue. No, I don't
- 25:05Speaker 1: want to continue as this person. I want to be
- 25:08Speaker 1: this person. Here we go, Yeah, all right, all right,
- 25:14Speaker 1: all right, David Maletski writes, Jake, your podcast is all
- 25:18Speaker 1: time great, amazing topics and experts storytelling. Thank you, David, David,
- 25:22Speaker 1: you look like you have a really good looking family. Congratulations.
- 25:26Speaker 2: All right?
- 25:27Speaker 1: What else we got here?
- 25:28Speaker 4: All right?
- 25:28Speaker 1: Lawrence Carlson writes in on Facebook what kind of glasses
- 25:31Speaker 1: are those? And then there's an emoji with this guy
- 25:33Speaker 1: laughing hysterically. Are you making fun of my glasses? Lawrence?
- 25:38Speaker 1: It's not fucking cool, man, I'm not making fun of
- 25:41Speaker 1: your glasses. I wouldn't make fun of anyone's glasses. Come on, dude,
- 25:47Speaker 1: all right, Nicholas at Nicholas Heineke writes, just discovered this
- 25:51Speaker 1: podcast earlier this week. Been listening non stop since Benjamming.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Easy does it by easy all week? So good from
- 25:58Speaker 1: the six oh five. By the way, all right, Nicholas,
- 26:00Speaker 1: thanks for writing in. Man, appreciate that, all right, Sean
- 26:03Speaker 1: Hill writes, in reference to the favorite Disgraceland episode, Bruce Springsteen,
- 26:08Speaker 1: hands down. I loves how the episode was put together.
- 26:10Speaker 1: All right, Sean Hill, thanks, man, appreciate that. That does it.
- 26:14Speaker 1: You're not to get in touch with me at disgrace
- 26:15Speaker 1: Lamp pod on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok six one
- 26:19Speaker 1: seven nine zero six six six three eight voicemail text.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a quick break right back with some recommendations,
- 26:42Speaker 1: all right, the recommendations part. This is the recommendation's part,
- 26:45Speaker 1: the part where we recommend the things that need recommending,
- 26:48Speaker 1: The recommendations part, guys, all right, what I'm watching? Yes, yes,
- 26:52Speaker 1: I say it every week. The movie recommendations part is
- 26:54Speaker 1: now in the bad Lands Bonus rap Party episode. However,
- 26:57Speaker 1: I watched an incredible music movie over the weekend, so
- 27:00Speaker 1: it seems pertinent for the after party because this is Disgraceland.
- 27:05Speaker 1: It's a movie from the nineties, and I can't believe
- 27:08Speaker 1: that I've never heard of this movie before, and I'm
- 27:11Speaker 1: guessing a lot of you haven't either, And it's really
- 27:13Speaker 1: fucking good and I'm excited to tell you guys about
- 27:15Speaker 1: It's called Georgia. It stars Jennifer Jason Lee Mayor Winningham,
- 27:21Speaker 1: who you might not know her name, but you will
- 27:23Speaker 1: definitely recognize her when you see her. She was nominated
- 27:26Speaker 1: for an Oscar for this I'm not sure for what,
- 27:28Speaker 1: I'm guessing Best Supporting Actor Actress. Excuse me, I think
- 27:31Speaker 1: that's the category. And Jennifer Jason Lee's mom wrote this movie,
- 27:39Speaker 1: and it's about these two sisters, one played by Mayor Winningham,
- 27:42Speaker 1: who is a she's kind of like a First of all,
- 27:46Speaker 1: this is a heavy nineties movie, right, like heavy nineties
- 27:49Speaker 1: music scene both from the sort of like uh, I
- 27:54Speaker 1: don't want, I want, I don't want to say adult
- 27:55Speaker 1: contemporary or Americana or Lilith Fair. But there was this
- 28:00Speaker 1: weird I know everyone's fucking tuning out right now, Just
- 28:02Speaker 1: trust me. There was this weird music thing going on
- 28:07Speaker 1: that was actually very good in the nineties with female
- 28:10Speaker 1: artists that were adult. It wasn't rock, and it wasn't Americana,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and it wasn't folk, but it sat somewhere between all
- 28:18Speaker 1: of that, and a lot of them got got grouped
- 28:22Speaker 1: into that whole Lilith Fair thing that happened, which was unfortunate.
- 28:25Speaker 1: I'm talking about artists like Mary Chape and Carpenter, the
- 28:28Speaker 1: Indigo Girls. Of course, Alison Krause came later, a little
- 28:32Speaker 1: bit later. So Mary Winningham plays that singer, and she's
- 28:38Speaker 1: got this incredible career. She's playing like theaters, you know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: like five thousand seed venues something like that. And she's
- 28:44Speaker 1: not a huge star, which she's big enough. She's got
- 28:46Speaker 1: a family, she got a shit together and she got
- 28:48Speaker 1: some kids. She got a husband he used to manager.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Not a perfect marriage, but they're making it work. Right.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Then she has a sister played by Jennifer Jason Lee,
- 28:57Speaker 1: who is like she's a full time out alcoholic and
- 29:01Speaker 1: she's younger, and she's a fucking mess. She's an addict,
- 29:05Speaker 1: but she's and she's a singer and she's like a
- 29:07Speaker 1: backup singer and a rock band and like a nineties
- 29:10Speaker 1: bar band in Seattle that is fronted by John Doe
- 29:14Speaker 1: of X not as John Doe. He's just playing this
- 29:18Speaker 1: other dude and John c Riley on drums and some
- 29:21Speaker 1: other dudes. And I can't fucking believe I never saw
- 29:25Speaker 1: this or never even knew about this. It's on the
- 29:28Speaker 1: Criterion app. You can probably get it anywhere, like on
- 29:32Speaker 1: Apple or something like that Amazon, but it's on Criterion
- 29:35Speaker 1: this month or this couple months.
- 29:37Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I don't know how they do it anyways. And John Doe,
- 29:41Speaker 1: you know, I know, I know, I think I know
- 29:43Speaker 1: all the movies the guy's been in. And for those
- 29:45Speaker 1: of you who don't know, my friends know this. I
- 29:46Speaker 1: toured with John Doe. We were on the same record
- 29:48Speaker 1: label for a while. We became friends for a minute,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and he was a big musical hero of mine. He
- 29:54Speaker 1: actually recorded a vocal track for a record of mine
- 29:57Speaker 1: that never came out. But just point is, I know
- 30:00Speaker 1: the dude, and I'm a big fan, and he's phenomenal
- 30:05Speaker 1: in this movie. He's got a real role. He's a
- 30:08Speaker 1: big part of it. And this I can't for the
- 30:12Speaker 1: life of me understand why this film is not mentioned
- 30:15Speaker 1: with some of the great music movies, if not the nineties,
- 30:18Speaker 1: Like just in general, it's that good. It's really raw.
- 30:22Speaker 1: It's about, like I said, these two sisters. One's an addict.
- 30:24Speaker 1: It's about their relationship. It's also about Max Perlick in
- 30:27Speaker 1: it that you know, you guys don't know Max Purlock,
- 30:29Speaker 1: drugstore cowboy, he hung out with the Beastie boys. Just
- 30:33Speaker 1: a really cool film. It's called Georgia. I highly recommend it.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Check it out. Let me know what you think. All right,
- 30:38Speaker 1: that's what I'm watching. What I'm reading. This is a
- 30:41Speaker 1: weird one. I read this book when I was probably
- 30:44Speaker 1: twelve years old, and yeah, I think I was exactly
- 30:47Speaker 1: twelve years old, sixth grade. Obsessed with baseball most of
- 30:50Speaker 1: my life. The book's called The Science of Hitting by
- 30:53Speaker 1: Ted Williams. You know, obviously Red Sox great or actual
- 30:56Speaker 1: baseball great, one of the greatest, if not the greatest
- 30:59Speaker 1: hitter of all time. I mentioned this book right because
- 31:03Speaker 1: not because I think all of you are into baseball
- 31:05Speaker 1: or sports. In fact, I know a huge portion of
- 31:07Speaker 1: you are not into sports at all, but you are obsessives.
- 31:11Speaker 1: I know you're obsessives because you're obsessed with music, which
- 31:14Speaker 1: is why you listen to Disgraceland. It's why you listen
- 31:17Speaker 1: to bad Lands, because you're obsessed with with Hollywood lore
- 31:21Speaker 1: and true crime. I can tell by talking to you
- 31:24Speaker 1: guys for the last five years that you're obsessed. So
- 31:27Speaker 1: if any of you are interested in either how to
- 31:31Speaker 1: hit a baseball at ninety miles an hour consistently and
- 31:34Speaker 1: do it well, or are just obsessed with people who
- 31:38Speaker 1: are obsessed with being great, then this book is for you.
- 31:41Speaker 1: It's a clinical book on how to actually hit a baseball.
- 31:45Speaker 1: And that might sound boring to you, and I get it.
- 31:47Speaker 1: It's boring to me. It was boring to me when
- 31:49Speaker 1: I was twelve years old. I basically started reading it
- 31:51Speaker 1: again now because my five year old is fucking raking
- 31:54Speaker 1: out there in the backyard. He's hitting live pitching with hardballs,
- 31:57Speaker 1: not t balls, not off a tee. So I don't
- 32:01Speaker 1: know what I'm doing beyond like eye on the ball.
- 32:03Speaker 1: I have no idea what to tell the kids. So
- 32:04Speaker 1: I'm trying to read this book to figure some shit out.
- 32:07Speaker 1: And what I found in reading it is that it
- 32:09Speaker 1: is so refreshing to read in this age of all
- 32:14Speaker 1: these sort of self help expert books. There's every fifth
- 32:20Speaker 1: meme on Instagram is somebody telling you how to live
- 32:23Speaker 1: your butt life better, or how your career would be
- 32:26Speaker 1: so much better if you'd just followed these three steps.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Everybody's got a hustle on how you can hustle to
- 32:33Speaker 1: better live your life or to better do whatever. Everything everything, sex, politics, religion, business,
- 32:41Speaker 1: doesn't fucking matter, parenting, all of it. We're in the
- 32:44Speaker 1: age of information. We're inundated with information, and I get
- 32:47Speaker 1: it all the time and I don't think twice about it.
- 32:48Speaker 1: And what I've realized from reading this book is that
- 32:51Speaker 1: it's very rare when we get information on how to
- 32:54Speaker 1: do something by someone who is the absolute fucking best
- 32:57Speaker 1: at it. No one hit a baseball better than Ted Williams,
- 33:00Speaker 1: no one. He had it broken down to a science,
- 33:03Speaker 1: thus the science of hitting. And he explains that, and
- 33:06Speaker 1: you can feel his obsession in his telling of the story,
- 33:10Speaker 1: and it's told in that great way. The dudes of
- 33:12Speaker 1: that generation told stories where they don't really care if
- 33:15Speaker 1: you like them or not, and they don't really care
- 33:17Speaker 1: of who they're talking about, if those people like them
- 33:19Speaker 1: or not. It's completely devoid of false niceties. It's just
- 33:24Speaker 1: this dude being like, this is how you do this
- 33:26Speaker 1: fucking thing. I know because I do it better than anyone,
- 33:29Speaker 1: and it's really great. It's truly refreshing. I can't put
- 33:33Speaker 1: it down. I'm reading it during the commercials of the
- 33:36Speaker 1: heat in Nuggets games. It's just awesome. So look, if
- 33:39Speaker 1: you're interested in obsessives, if you're obsessed, or if you're
- 33:43Speaker 1: interested in baseball the Science of Hitting by Ted Williams,
- 33:46Speaker 1: especially if you got kids who are interested in baseball.
- 33:48Speaker 1: All right, what I'm listening to listening to you today,
- 33:50Speaker 1: had a big workout today? Is that the Why went
- 33:53Speaker 1: to the Why to get into the pool. There was
- 33:54Speaker 1: like forty five thousand people in the pool today. I
- 33:57Speaker 1: don't know what the fuck was going on. So I'm like, God,
- 33:58Speaker 1: I gotta go you on the elliptical to do cardio,
- 34:01Speaker 1: which I don't want to do. So I get on
- 34:02Speaker 1: the cardio machine. I'm like, what am I gonna listen
- 34:05Speaker 1: to you? For some reason, Last Days of Disco soundtrack
- 34:08Speaker 1: pops into my head, so I put that baby on.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Fucking awesome, awesome soundtrack to a great movie. I don't know.
- 34:14Speaker 1: If you've seen this movie or not, go see it.
- 34:16Speaker 1: If you have it, watch it again. If you have not,
- 34:18Speaker 1: go to Spotify to get the soundtrack. It's awesome and
- 34:22Speaker 1: it just really underscores this thing about seventies disco chic
- 34:27Speaker 1: now Rogers, everybody dance. Everyone talks about lift Freak, but
- 34:31Speaker 1: it's everybody dance. That's the song. That's my favorite disco
- 34:34Speaker 1: song I think of all time. What's yours? Six one
- 34:37Speaker 1: seven nine zer was six six six three eight favorite
- 34:40Speaker 1: disco song of all time? Tell me why you hate disco?
- 34:42Speaker 1: By the way.
