- 1:44Speaker 7: and your host, Chip Howard. The Writer's Roundtable is brought
- 1:47Speaker 7: to you by Intec and First Financial Bank.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Welcome in.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us here on this Monday
- 1:59Speaker 1: with Rusty Burson, with Robert Cessna. Guys, thank you for
- 2:03Speaker 1: coming in on Labor Day as we labor on Labor Day.
- 2:08Speaker 1: First impressions on Saturday, Cease.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Well, the first impressions was when I was watching that
- 2:13Speaker 4: half and the penalties and they were screwing up. It
- 2:17Speaker 4: wasn't pretty. It wasn't pretty. And you actually, at that point,
- 2:21Speaker 4: I'd lost track of how good the defense was playing.
- 2:23Speaker 4: So my first impression was, wow, this offensive line, that's
- 2:27Speaker 4: not good. And at the end, I'm chuckling. I'm right
- 2:30Speaker 4: in a 50-0 game.
- 2:32Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, I thought that the– Not that there's
- 2:36Speaker 8: any question at all that A & M was going
- 2:38Speaker 8: to ever go in the game. But I thought A
- 2:40Speaker 8: & M was able to take a deep breath after
- 2:42Speaker 8: they got the safety because the first possession, they go
- 2:46Speaker 8: down and score, and then the next two possessions, they
- 2:48Speaker 8: don't look good. But that safety kind of like, okay,
- 2:51Speaker 8: they took a breath.
- 2:52Speaker 4: I'm like, all right, we're going to be okay.
- 2:55Speaker 8: And so in the grand scheme of things, a two
- 2:57Speaker 8: points is not that big in a 50-0 game. But
- 3:02Speaker 8: I thought at the time, I was like, okay, A
- 3:04Speaker 8: & M had a chance to just take a deep
- 3:06Speaker 8: breath and say, okay, we're going to be fine.
- 3:08Speaker 4: And I'm with you because there was some point in
- 3:09Speaker 4: our show about to probably buy a place when Missouri
- 3:14Speaker 4: State was going to go for it in fourth down,
- 3:17Speaker 4: and I go, oh, they're just waiting for the clock
- 3:18Speaker 4: to run out, and they took the timeout, and they
- 3:20Speaker 4: still went for it. It was a horrible play. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 4: And I thought that was kind of– Like you said,
- 3:25Speaker 4: I wouldn't say a turning point, but it was like
- 3:27Speaker 4: A & M was slushing around, and you're thinking, like,
- 3:29Speaker 4: are they going to do this all game?
- 3:30Speaker 8: Well, you know, it's so hard to pitch a shutout
- 3:32Speaker 8: against anybody, and I was looking around the SEC, and
- 3:35Speaker 8: it's like, you know, I mean, there were three shutouts,
- 3:37Speaker 8: and then Texas almost shut out Texas State. So, I mean,
- 3:40Speaker 8: it was like A & M had a very dominant
- 3:43Speaker 8: defensive performance, but then so did OU, right, against UTEP,
- 3:47Speaker 8: and then so did South Carolina, and they shut out
- 3:50Speaker 8: Kent State, and then Texas almost shut out Texas State.
- 3:53Speaker 9: So.
- 3:54Speaker 8: Yeah, it was a really good defensive day, and the
- 3:57Speaker 8: fact that the SEC went 16-0, pretty impressive, even though
- 4:00Speaker 8: Auburn did not look that great.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Which is remarkable, given it's been... Since 1997 that that happened.
- 4:11Speaker 8: Is that right?
- 4:11Speaker 10: Wow.
- 4:12Speaker 8: Yeah. Crazy.
- 4:13Speaker 1: It is crazy because there are not tons of really
- 4:18Speaker 1: great games on the first weekend.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Last night was pretty fun. The second half. So, 97
- 4:24Speaker 4: since SEC? We're 16. It was undefeated. A & M
- 4:27Speaker 4: wouldn't have been in the conference. Correct. That's right. So,
- 4:30Speaker 4: there are 14 to know, I guess. But still, that's
- 4:33Speaker 4: probably amazing.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Probably 12-0 all the way back then, right?
- 4:35Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, maybe. That's still impressive. It is. Because you're right.
- 4:39Speaker 4: And Rusty touched on it because when it was all
- 4:41Speaker 4: said and done, I go, almost everybody scores these days.
- 4:44Speaker 4: I mean, Rusty, because on the offense.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Because if you're up 50-40 to nothing, you put the
- 4:49Speaker 4: second strings in, the first string offense is going to
- 4:52Speaker 4: score because they've got a quarterback, they've got a receiver. No,
- 4:54Speaker 4: they couldn't even score. And I'm thinking, man, that's hard.
- 4:58Speaker 8: Four first downs.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And one of them was on a penalty.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yeah. Right? Yeah.
- 5:03Speaker 8: So they had three first downs in the entire game.
- 5:05Speaker 8: That's really impressive defensively.
- 5:07Speaker 4: And the longest pass was 10 and the longest run 7.
- 5:10Speaker 4: That's just unheard of. It's those little things that you
- 5:13Speaker 4: slip in when Elko said, like, they wanted to play
- 5:15Speaker 4: someone more, but they only had 46 to order one's
- 5:18Speaker 4: defensive snaps. They didn't even have enough snaps to play
- 5:21Speaker 4: all the defensive guys they wanted to.
- 5:23Speaker 8: Yeah. I mean, again, it was really, really impressive defense.
- 5:27Speaker 8: And they just smothered Missouri State.
- 5:30Speaker 4: And like I said, in the first half, I wasn't
- 5:32Speaker 4: really paying. Paying 67 yards in total offense.
- 5:36Speaker 3: 67 yards. Versus five, what?
- 5:39Speaker 8: 500.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Let's see. Let me. 505. 505. Yeah.
- 5:44Speaker 3: That's pretty one-sided.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Pretty one-sided.
- 5:47Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 4: But what's more amazing to me was about every weekend
- 5:50Speaker 4: is LSU had more yards than that difference against Clemson.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I mean, Clemson, which is amazing, but. Guys, we'll get
- 5:59Speaker 4: to that. I was going to throw it out to you.
- 6:00Speaker 4: As I watch games, these, quote, $ 40 million teams or whatever,
- 6:05Speaker 4: I just think there's such a wide variance between because
- 6:09Speaker 4: I thought in the second half and later on, if
- 6:13Speaker 4: they had still been playing today, I don't think Missouri
- 6:15Speaker 4: State scores. And I think A & M might have 6,000
- 6:18Speaker 4: points because they were so– Missouri State was beat bad.
- 6:23Speaker 4: They were ready to go to the house. And I
- 6:25Speaker 4: just think there's such a– A talent-level difference. Yeah. What
- 6:31Speaker 4: stood out? Players, what is it about the win that
- 6:35Speaker 4: you took away, Cease? Well, and in fear, but just
- 6:39Speaker 4: the line of scrimmage, early on, A couple times I
- 6:42Speaker 4: had glasses on, and Missouri State was just confusing them
- 6:46Speaker 4: with bringing only three players sometimes, but just by going
- 6:50Speaker 4: and having them flop the ends or just going ahead
- 6:55Speaker 4: and crisscross defenders. But once A & M picked that up,
- 6:59Speaker 4: their line of scrimmage, when you look at the yards
- 7:02Speaker 4: per rush and yards allowed per rush, everybody's going to
- 7:06Speaker 4: look good and read early how to make a couple
- 7:09Speaker 4: plays because of bad pressure. But he had a clean pocket,
- 7:14Speaker 4: and he threw the ball pretty much on line. So,
- 7:17Speaker 4: once again, I always go back. This is a defensive league, SEC,
- 7:21Speaker 4: and you've got to be good up front, and A
- 7:23Speaker 4: & M was very good up front when it was
- 7:25Speaker 4: all said and done once the O-line got in gear.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I really liked Isaiah Horton.
- 7:30Speaker 8: I mean, obviously he– He had one mistake, but by
- 7:34Speaker 8: and large, he was just a dominant presence out there.
- 7:37Speaker 8: And the receivers overall, I thought, looked really good. I mean, obviously,
- 7:40Speaker 8: we know what Mario Craver can do. So it was
- 7:43Speaker 8: nice to see Horton. I thought that Reed was pretty good.
- 7:48Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 7:50Speaker 8: I think he hit the open passes, what, 70%?
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yes, 21 to 30, two drops.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah, 70%. It's tough against air, right?
- 7:59Speaker 8: Yeah. And he had the two drops. I liked it.
- 8:02Speaker 8: I liked the way they got him out on the run,
- 8:06Speaker 8: got him out of the pocket, and I love his
- 8:09Speaker 8: moves in the open field.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I think that depth stood out because, obviously, he played
- 8:14Speaker 1: lots of players because of the nature of the game.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Those two freshman running backs, man, they stood out to me. Yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 4: they are good. Baker and Edwards, they really stood out.
- 8:25Speaker 4: They did it without, I'll just do the asterisk because
- 8:29Speaker 4: Missouri State was so beat up.
- 8:30Speaker 8: Come the third quarter.
- 8:31Speaker 4: True, true. But I liked all the skill, getting back
- 8:34Speaker 4: to Rusty. Not only that, but at the end of
- 8:36Speaker 4: the day, I looked, we didn't even really see them
- 8:38Speaker 4: use their tight ends very much. We know they're good
- 8:41Speaker 4: in receivers. So you look at all the options that
- 8:44Speaker 4: A & M has in their passing game. A lot
- 8:46Speaker 4: of weapons. A lot of weapons.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Yep.
- 8:48Speaker 8: I liked that when Brady Hart came in and just
- 8:50Speaker 8: threw a touchdown pass.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I was like, boy, that was easy. Yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 11: Okay.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I was sitting there. If you guys, and I do
- 8:56Speaker 4: always have the broadcast on as well, a big play
- 9:00Speaker 4: early in the game, like when A & M scored
- 9:01Speaker 4: their first touchdown, they're at wherever they were, the 24-yard line,
- 9:05Speaker 4: and the cornerback was giving Horton 10 yards at the
- 9:08Speaker 4: snap because they stopped the play on the replay, play two. Yeah.
- 9:13Speaker 4: You're 10 yards off Isaiah Horton. I mean, you're just
- 9:17Speaker 4: asking to give up a big play. I mean, it
- 9:20Speaker 4: was Missouri State. And this was early in the game,
- 9:23Speaker 4: and I go, it's the first game for everybody. I mean,
- 9:26Speaker 4: you think they even had a lot of transfers. I
- 9:27Speaker 4: don't care who you are, but I go, A &
- 9:30Speaker 4: M' s got all the weapons. It's how do they use
- 9:32Speaker 4: them moving forward. Yeah. And how efficient are they? Yeah.
- 9:37Speaker 8: And, you know, obviously, I mean, we didn't see a
- 9:40Speaker 8: whole lot from Terry Bussey, but– It was just nice
- 9:43Speaker 8: to see him make a couple catches.
- 9:45Speaker 4: And he's the name.
- 9:46Speaker 1: That had kept coming out all through fall camp, right?
- 9:51Speaker 1: That if there was an MVP of fall camp, the
- 9:54Speaker 1: people were going to say, well, it was Terry Bussey.
- 9:56Speaker 4: You're right. And what I saw him, I really liked.
- 9:59Speaker 4: He's wide open for the touchdown, and maybe that was
- 10:01Speaker 4: Reed's worst throw of the night. All he's got to
- 10:03Speaker 4: do is lead him, and it's an easy touchdown. But, A,
- 10:06Speaker 4: he got that open. Yeah, exactly right. And I know
- 10:08Speaker 4: it was, we're getting back to Missouri State, but I go,
- 10:11Speaker 4: Bussie is wide open, and he was open a couple
- 10:13Speaker 4: other times. And like I said, you have to put
- 10:16Speaker 4: Bussie down as maybe, is he the third or fourth
- 10:18Speaker 4: best receiver on this team? So that's a good problem
- 10:21Speaker 4: to have.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Yeah, it's a real good problem to have because that
- 10:25Speaker 8: receiving group is very, very deep.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been a while since we've said that probably. Well,
- 10:32Speaker 4: here's the deal. It's probably gone back to the Sumlin era,
- 10:35Speaker 4: but they didn't have everything else to go with it.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Like we said, we're talking about a defense that gave
- 10:38Speaker 4: up 67 yards. And I know they weren't playing an
- 10:42Speaker 4: FCS team. They were playing a team that went to
- 10:44Speaker 4: a bowl game last year.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Well, I told you guys I had no idea they
- 10:47Speaker 1: were playing a team this week that has a chance
- 10:49Speaker 1: to win the national championship until I heard Coach Elko
- 10:52Speaker 1: this afternoon.
- 10:53Speaker 4: That's why Dusty was out there, so you'd be informed. Exactly.
- 10:58Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, there's definitely a step up in competition.
- 11:03Speaker 8: I mean, I don't think Arizona State's in a position
- 11:05Speaker 8: to win the national championship or even the Big 12,
- 11:08Speaker 8: but I think that there's a definite step up in competition.
- 11:11Speaker 10: No doubt.
- 11:12Speaker 4: And again, they can apparently throw and catch too, right?
- 11:15Speaker 8: Which is always dangerous.
- 11:16Speaker 3: They had a lopsided win too, you know?
- 11:18Speaker 1: Six touchdown passes they threw for.
- 11:21Speaker 4: I love the way A & M schedules things. The
- 11:25Speaker 4: schedule works out pretty well. This is going to be
- 11:27Speaker 4: a good test because we know that Arizona State's going
- 11:30Speaker 4: to have talent on both sides. A & M' s defense
- 11:33Speaker 4: wasn't tested at all. They'll be tested this game. And
- 11:37Speaker 4: then you have A & M should win. Then you
- 11:40Speaker 4: have the hype of, yeah, Kentucky's not that good, but
- 11:43Speaker 4: it's still an SEC team. New coach wants to prove himself.
- 11:46Speaker 4: This will be a big game for them as it
- 11:48Speaker 4: is A & M. So I love they go one, two, three.
- 11:52Speaker 4: then you go to LSU. So I really think A
- 11:55Speaker 4: & M' s gonna get tested enough You know, I felt
- 11:57Speaker 4: if A & M come out and dominated early in
- 11:59Speaker 4: the game the way they did late on offense, maybe
- 12:02Speaker 4: they'd be a little bit cocky, you know, maybe not
- 12:04Speaker 4: get after it. But they played so bad there for
- 12:07Speaker 4: about a 15-minute period on offense.
- 12:10Speaker 1: They gave Elko an opportunity at halftime to challenge them, right?
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Didn't throw a chair, but, you know, he probably got
- 12:17Speaker 4: their attention. Oh, no question. He was hot coming off
- 12:20Speaker 4: the field at halftime. Every time they showed him at halftime.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Through the first half, he was not happy. He wasn't happy.
- 12:27Speaker 1: And Damian Sanford didn't play, which is, you know, if
- 12:32Speaker 1: there was any doubt whatsoever, why play him?
- 12:37Speaker 4: And we expect to see him this week, I'm pretty sure.
- 12:40Speaker 4: If he's healthy, I would. And once again, you're playing
- 12:44Speaker 4: Missouri State. Why go out there?
- 12:46Speaker 1: And again, I'm looking forward to seeing a team that
- 12:49Speaker 1: comes with some offensive power. to watch the defense with
- 12:55Speaker 1: an offense that can hurt you.
- 12:57Speaker 3: I don't expect a shutout this week.
- 12:58Speaker 1: No, a team that can hurt you. And I love
- 13:02Speaker 1: the linebacker play. I love the defensive line play. But again,
- 13:07Speaker 1: I want to see them against better competition because if
- 13:11Speaker 1: they're as good as they showed, then it's going to
- 13:14Speaker 1: be the kind of year that Aggie fans are going
- 13:16Speaker 1: to enjoy.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I think so, yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 4: I want to see what the offensive line can do.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Is the line out on this game yet, Cease? Have
- 13:24Speaker 4: you seen the line? Fourteen and a half when I
- 13:26Speaker 4: looked at one line. Okay. That was yesterday. Okay. We'll check.
- 13:30Speaker 4: I know you're going to check here. Yeah, we'll check
- 13:31Speaker 4: here in a minute. The bookie man. Yeah. I could
- 13:34Speaker 4: check with Lane Kiffin if I ever got his cell phone.
- 13:37Speaker 4: He knows those pro lines and pro players. Let's talk
- 13:41Speaker 4: about Lane because what is it, Stan? It's still 14
- 13:46Speaker 4: and a half.
- 13:46Speaker 10: Okay.
- 13:48Speaker 4: I was really impressed.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And by the way, what got lost in all of
- 13:53Speaker 1: this is they blinked at LSU. They just said, we
- 13:58Speaker 1: can't play those. I saw them on game day right
- 14:00Speaker 1: that morning. So we can't play the players right now.
- 14:04Speaker 4: They blinked. Okay.
- 14:05Speaker 1: After all of this stuff going into the game, I
- 14:08Speaker 1: don't think these guys are going to play.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I don't think either.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Okay. Yep.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And, but they were, focused they were really good they
- 14:18Speaker 1: were good on both sides of the football i know
- 14:22Speaker 1: that clemson is not very good uh rusty you mentioned
- 14:25Speaker 1: right off the bat if there was any doubt that
- 14:29Speaker 1: that the dabbo era is coming to an end i
- 14:32Speaker 1: think it was erased on saturday.
- 14:34Speaker 8: Night i still don't know if they have the money
- 14:36Speaker 8: to buy him out they may not it's 53 million
- 14:39Speaker 8: i believe wow So it's a lot.
- 14:41Speaker 4: That's a lot of money.
- 14:42Speaker 3: It's a lot of money. It's not very much for
- 14:44Speaker 3: A & M.
- 14:45Speaker 4: That's a lot of money. Yeah, it's a lot of money.
- 14:47Speaker 3: So I don't know. I know the fan base has
- 14:51Speaker 3: lost confidence in Dabo altogether.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Which is, you know, I always liked him. He's
- 14:57Speaker 1: obviously a heck of a coach. We've talked about this
- 15:00Speaker 1: many times on this program. When you have a program
- 15:04Speaker 1: that is... been at the top and you start that
- 15:09Speaker 1: downward slide you just don't see very often that program
- 15:15Speaker 1: can turn back around and get back up the mountain
- 15:18Speaker 1: to where it was.
- 15:18Speaker 8: Yeah i think ship it reminds me like on the
- 15:21Speaker 8: the whole tom landry you know past his prime kind
- 15:24Speaker 8: of thing you know they're still playing doomsday and doing
- 15:27Speaker 8: the same thing when the game had changed so much
- 15:30Speaker 8: and And Dabo just refused to buy into the NIL.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yes.
- 15:34Speaker 8: And he got so far down the road that once
- 15:37Speaker 8: he realized, oh, my gosh, I've got to change, it's
- 15:39Speaker 8: almost too late.
- 15:40Speaker 3: And he's lost the confidence of.
- 15:42Speaker 8: That fan base. I've got family out in South Carolina.
- 15:44Speaker 4: But he doesn't have a quarterback either. No, he doesn't.
- 15:46Speaker 4: You don't have a quarterback. You are toast right now.
- 15:49Speaker 8: And he had quarterbacks when he was in the National Championship.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Yes, he did. Yeah. Without a doubt, because we've seen
- 15:54Speaker 4: that a little bit with Jimbo here, coaches, their style.
- 15:58Speaker 4: You've got to adjust. You've got to constantly adjust. And
- 16:00Speaker 4: if you're not, you've got to move aside. And then
- 16:03Speaker 4: what's happened now, Rusty, and you see this so much,
- 16:07Speaker 4: a lot of coaches will tell you this. When your
- 16:09Speaker 4: program or people who go out and get money, when
- 16:13Speaker 4: your donors lose hope, that's when you're done for. Because
- 16:16Speaker 4: right now, Clemson, there's almost no way that I can see.
- 16:20Speaker 4: This is the first game of the year. I mean,
- 16:22Speaker 4: they got absolutely drove.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 4: It's got to be such a long year, I think,
- 16:28Speaker 4: up there in Clemson. For everybody involved, starting at the
- 16:30Speaker 4: top with, you know.
- 16:33Speaker 8: They led early in that game. And then they gave
- 16:35Speaker 8: up 51 straight points. Like, I mean, it was 3-0 Clemson.
- 16:39Speaker 4: LSU threw a pick, right? They threw a pick early.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Intercepted and led to a field goal. That's what I mean. Yeah.
- 16:45Speaker 3: But, I mean, oh, my gosh.
- 16:46Speaker 8: That just.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Boat run them.
- 16:49Speaker 1: The talent discrepancy was just off the charts too. That's
- 16:54Speaker 1: the other thing you look at. We knew that they
- 16:57Speaker 1: were number one in the portal. We knew how many
- 16:59Speaker 1: players he brought in. But I'll say again, they played together.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Sam Lovett was really good. I don't know if he
- 17:08Speaker 1: can go through the season running the way he did
- 17:10Speaker 1: against Clemson in the.
- 17:11Speaker 4: SEC every week. But he was really good. And I'll
- 17:16Speaker 4: say this about I say a lot of things about
- 17:18Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin because as a journalist, a writer, you always
- 17:21Speaker 4: like him because he's low-hanging fruit. He's going to give
- 17:24Speaker 4: you tape. He's going to give you sound bites. He's
- 17:26Speaker 4: going to give you quotes. Here's the deal about Lane Kiffin.
- 17:28Speaker 4: He can sit here and make jokes with us if
- 17:31Speaker 4: he was in this room. He'd go right out. His
- 17:34Speaker 4: game face is on. And his players reflect him. You
- 17:37Speaker 4: see them be a little goofy at times down at
- 17:39Speaker 4: the SEC media days, but he is in total control.
- 17:42Speaker 4: His system works. And on the outside, going in, you go, oh,
- 17:47Speaker 4: he's not going to win these big games. So I
- 17:48Speaker 4: will say about Clemson, I'm looking at their schedule. They
- 17:51Speaker 4: have very real opportunity to win four of their.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Next five games. They are hosting Georgia Southern. They're hosting
- 18:01Speaker 1: North Carolina. They travel to Cal. Then they have Miami,
- 18:09Speaker 1: which I want to talk about. And then they play
- 18:12Speaker 1: Charleston Southern. So they have a chance, a decent chance
- 18:17Speaker 1: to win four of their next five games.
- 18:19Speaker 4: It'd be four and two.
- 18:21Speaker 1: And maybe take a little pressure off. But not as
- 18:28Speaker 1: sky is falling. Because right now the sky is falling, like.
- 18:32Speaker 4: You mentioned, Rusty.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 18:33Speaker 4: It was awful. No, I think it's already fallen.
- 18:36Speaker 1: If you'd have told me five years ago that this
- 18:39Speaker 1: was going to be the Clemson team on the field,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I would have said no way.
- 18:42Speaker 4: No way.
- 18:43Speaker 3: I would have said that too.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Because they were killing everybody. Yeah, they were.
- 18:45Speaker 8: Dabo was on the top of the college football world.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Yes, he was. And mentioned among the top one or
- 18:51Speaker 4: two or three coaches in football.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Absolutely. It was either him or Saban.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Absolutely. Because they played each other like three times. Exactly right.
- 18:59Speaker 4: last year last week this time you give me uh
- 19:02Speaker 4: clemson and 35 i'd probably take it in a heartbeat
- 19:05Speaker 4: and said what are you thinking rusty.
- 19:07Speaker 1: So my my team of the week and my player
- 19:09Speaker 1: of the week is malachi tony and the university of
- 19:12Speaker 1: miami and now again they they didn't uh their competition
- 19:16Speaker 1: is going to get better but malachi tony put on
- 19:19Speaker 1: a show friday night and and Right now, he moved
- 19:24Speaker 1: way up in the Heisman. Again, I said earlier, it's
- 19:27Speaker 1: week to week. But this guy wasn't on my radar.
- 19:31Speaker 4: To win the Heisman because he's a receiver.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And after watching him play, and I watched a lot
- 19:36Speaker 1: of football and a lot of quarterbacks this weekend and
- 19:39Speaker 1: a lot of running backs. Kwon Lacey should be on
- 19:42Speaker 1: the list, but he got hurt, unfortunately, last night. uh,
- 19:46Speaker 1: Malachi Toney was the player, the best player on the
- 19:50Speaker 1: field that I watched this week.
- 19:51Speaker 8: Have they ever had any good wide receivers at Miami?
- 19:54Speaker 4: A couple.
- 19:54Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Michael Irvin's still standing on the sidelines. If he gets arrested,
- 19:59Speaker 4: he might be even better.
- 20:00Speaker 8: Well, because he set a record with 234 yards receiving.
- 20:03Speaker 4: And I thought that was just going to be the
- 20:05Speaker 4: first half. He had like 130 yards, 140 yards the
- 20:07Speaker 4: first half.
- 20:08Speaker 12: He was amazing.
- 20:08Speaker 10: And Aggie.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Aggie fans should be a little bit excited because didn't
- 20:14Speaker 4: he get shut down pretty much last year? He got
- 20:16Speaker 4: shut down. What does Elko say? This is the best
- 20:19Speaker 4: secondary he's had since he's been at A & M
- 20:21Speaker 4: at any time? And they shut him down. And those
- 20:23Speaker 4: secondaries back. Jordan Shaw, actually, they put on him, I think.
- 20:27Speaker 4: And they shut Tony down. So I think in an
- 20:30Speaker 4: indirect way, that's a compliment to A & M' s defense. Oh,
- 20:32Speaker 4: there's no doubt. I was thinking the same thing, Cease.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I'm going, man, how did you keep? Now, he beat
- 20:38Speaker 1: them on an end around, not catching a pass.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Because they came in here and said, that's one of
- 20:42Speaker 4: the keys. If A & M stops Tony. And that's
- 20:44Speaker 4: what you have to do.
- 20:45Speaker 10: And the wins.
- 20:45Speaker 3: May have been the MVP.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I kept waiting.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Hey, do you want to put a second or third
- 20:52Speaker 1: or fourth DB on this guy?
- 20:53Speaker 4: Because right now he's killing you. And they never did.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Mensah looked really good, too, obviously.
- 20:59Speaker 4: The quarterback who's the highest paid, I think, right? Guy
- 21:02Speaker 4: right now at NIO?
- 21:03Speaker 3: I think so, yeah.
- 21:04Speaker 4: Right up there with Arch? I don't know if I'm
- 21:06Speaker 4: going to rate him. He's going to earn it. He
- 21:09Speaker 4: earned his money Friday night, and he's going to earn
- 21:12Speaker 4: his money. They look good. They looked really good. We
- 21:14Speaker 4: just had a rough time buying stock in Miami. I'm
- 21:17Speaker 4: with you, Cease. Cristobal. Cristobal. I'm with you, but you
- 21:22Speaker 4: know what?
- 21:22Speaker 1: Last year, even with stupid penalties, even in the championship game,
- 21:27Speaker 1: he did that. But, man, I think they've turned the
- 21:32Speaker 1: corner down there, and they are formidable right now.
- 21:36Speaker 8: I mean, those two guys at Miami are head and
- 21:38Speaker 8: shoulders above like Dante Moore right now.
- 21:41Speaker 4: If he goes to college. Yeah, Dante Moore.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I said this, Rusty. He didn't lose to Heisman. He's
- 21:47Speaker 1: still in the race. His numbers, when you look at
- 21:50Speaker 1: the— it didn't look like it when you looked at that game.
- 21:54Speaker 1: His numbers ended up being— unbelievably good.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 21:58Speaker 4: Yeah. But I'm with you. He didn't look good. The
- 22:01Speaker 4: whole team did, but the whole team didn't look good.
- 22:04Speaker 8: And I don't know how good.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Boise looked good.
- 22:07Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 13: Right?
- 22:08Speaker 4: Boise looked good, and I think Louisville looked good last night.
- 22:11Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 22:11Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Louisville looked really good.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And I tell you, the thing that Reardon said to
- 22:15Speaker 1: me last night, the reason I didn't pick Ole Miss
- 22:18Speaker 1: in the top two or three because Trinidad was back.
- 22:21Speaker 4: I knew Trinidad was back. I'm not sold. On the coach?
- 22:25Speaker 8: Yet.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Because he hadn't done it. Right.
- 22:28Speaker 1: He's been a coordinator. He hasn't done it for a season.
- 22:33Speaker 1: He did it for three games last year, and they
- 22:35Speaker 1: were good.
- 22:36Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 22:36Speaker 4: But they were rolling, right?
- 22:38Speaker 3: That was a shootout in the second half.
- 22:39Speaker 4: It was just unbelievable.
- 22:40Speaker 8: It was a shootout. Back and forth.
- 22:41Speaker 1: And Trinidad became Trinidad in the second half. The first half,
- 22:45Speaker 1: you're going.
- 22:45Speaker 8: Shame on Ole Miss for the busted coverage late in
- 22:48Speaker 8: that game. Stupid.
- 22:49Speaker 4: I mean, it's just terrible.
- 22:50Speaker 10: Twice.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Twice.
- 22:51Speaker 8: I mean, it was stupid. You cannot bust the coverage on.
- 22:55Speaker 4: And Golding's called, by the way, Golding's calling the defense.
- 22:58Speaker 4: And he's a defensive. He's got the job because he's
- 23:01Speaker 4: a good defensive coordinator. Yes. But they, they got housed twice.
- 23:06Speaker 8: Ole Miss had that game and you cannot just let
- 23:08Speaker 8: it get big. Can't get deep.
- 23:10Speaker 4: You can't get deep behind you.
- 23:11Speaker 14: Yes.
- 23:12Speaker 4: I agree. How many times? I mean, I, I agree.
- 23:15Speaker 1: So. You know, I think Dante Moore is still in
- 23:19Speaker 1: the conversation. I think Oregon is still pretty good. We'll
- 23:23Speaker 1: see how good Boise is. Boise, by the way, before Saturday,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I didn't know this, they were 2-1 against Oregon. So
- 23:30Speaker 1: they were not intimidated going to Autzen Stadium like a
- 23:33Speaker 1: lot of teams are. And they just played. I thought
- 23:36Speaker 1: they played great. I thought they were one of the
- 23:39Speaker 1: teams of the weekend. I thought they played great.
- 23:42Speaker 8: I tell you what, that guy, Lucas Canaro.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Canaro the kicker. He impressed me last year.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Yes.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Money again?
- 23:52Speaker 4: They don't play for the national championship. Yeah, they don't.
- 23:56Speaker 3: They don't get that far.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Get close to the national championship.
- 24:00Speaker 8: They don't get that far in the playoffs.
- 24:01Speaker 4: And he was money last night.
- 24:03Speaker 3: He missed one, but when the game.
- 24:05Speaker 4: Was on the line.
- 24:05Speaker 1: When the game was on the line at 48 yards,
- 24:07Speaker 1: he drilled it down the middle.
- 24:08Speaker 4: There's no doubt.
- 24:08Speaker 3: He is a weapon.
- 24:10Speaker 4: He's a weapon. I watched only the last four minutes
- 24:12Speaker 4: of the game, which is the best watch. And I'm
- 24:14Speaker 4: sitting there after that last deal, and I go, snap
- 24:16Speaker 4: the ball. Because it was like they took forever to
- 24:19Speaker 4: snap the ball.
- 24:19Speaker 10: They did.
- 24:20Speaker 4: I go, if I'm the kicker, I think he's the
- 24:21Speaker 4: right kicker. And you knew they didn't have any timeouts.
- 24:23Speaker 8: I was flipping back and forth between two boring games
- 24:26Speaker 8: in the first half.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Both boring in the first half.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Both terrible.
- 24:30Speaker 8: And by the way, that all red. uniform that wisconsin
- 24:34Speaker 8: wore last.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Night no horrendous horrendous and that all blue notre dame
- 24:38Speaker 1: horrendous shiny yeah it was like it hurt my eyes
- 24:42Speaker 1: watching that game yeah the uniform the gold pants back
- 24:45Speaker 1: on yes yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 8: The shiny numerals and both of them in dark i.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Get you i hear you uh notre dame looked a
- 24:52Speaker 1: lot better in the second half for sure you know
- 24:54Speaker 1: they look that's a close game at the half it
- 24:56Speaker 1: was uh their secondary is really good which we do
- 24:59Speaker 1: we've seen them up close for two years now. They
- 25:03Speaker 1: have lots of players. I didn't think C.J., speaking of
- 25:07Speaker 1: Dante Moore, C.J. Carr didn't have a Heisman kind of
- 25:11Speaker 1: game last night.
- 25:11Speaker 4: He wasn't great.
- 25:12Speaker 8: I didn't watch a lot of the second half because
- 25:14Speaker 8: it became a blowout. I was so interested in the
- 25:17Speaker 8: Ole Miss Louisville game. That second half of that Ole
- 25:22Speaker 8: Miss-Louisville game just reminded me of classic shootouts.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Oh, it was fun.
- 25:26Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I mean, it was fun because two good quarterbacks.
- 25:29Speaker 1: It took that quarterback a half to get going.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:34Speaker 1: But I'm telling you, he was really good in the
- 25:37Speaker 1: second half. But as you mentioned, he had some help
- 25:40Speaker 1: because those receivers are running free.
- 25:42Speaker 4: It's a big win. Early for the SEC because you
- 25:45Speaker 4: figure they're going to get four into the playoffs. So
- 25:47Speaker 4: you want to have Ole Miss. You're going to have
- 25:49Speaker 4: all your teams have a good resume. So when you
- 25:51Speaker 4: beat them. You know, I didn't even think of those terms,
- 25:53Speaker 4: but you're right. That's huge because I think Louisville is
- 25:56Speaker 4: going to go on and beat some people. They are.
- 25:57Speaker 4: I think they're pretty good. That's going to help the conference.
- 25:59Speaker 4: I think Jeff Brom is a pretty good coach. I do, too.
- 26:02Speaker 4: I do, too. Because his team got better as the
- 26:04Speaker 4: game went on. Like I said, I just watched the
- 26:05Speaker 4: end of it. But that's good coaching. Elko's team got
- 26:08Speaker 4: better as the game went on. You know, it's the
- 26:10Speaker 4: first game. Well, we've talked before about Elko at halftime.
- 26:13Speaker 4: Elko has been brilliant at halftime, right? Yes, he has.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Most second halves since he's been here, they have been really,
- 26:21Speaker 1: really good in adjusting in the second half.
- 26:24Speaker 4: Fixing what's wrong. What was wrong in the first half
- 26:26Speaker 4: was the offense and the offensive line. They come out
- 26:29Speaker 4: and they had it done.
- 26:30Speaker 10: All right.
- 26:30Speaker 1: It's the Writer's Roundtable for a Monday. By the way,
- 26:34Speaker 1: I met somebody.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Wednesday on campus that listens to us. I went, why
- 26:40Speaker 4: do you do that?
- 26:41Speaker 8: I always ask that.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Well, I got to put a plug in today. It's
- 26:45Speaker 4: Labor Day, but my wife is working. It's her birthday.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Happy birthday. Oh, happy birthday, Jessica. And my birthday gift
- 26:50Speaker 4: to her is I'm going to stay away from her.
- 26:53Speaker 4: What a deal.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Man, that is a huge gift, Steve.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Huge deal. You devil you. You romantic you. That's a
- 26:59Speaker 4: big gift you're giving her. I'll be working. Happy birthday
- 27:02Speaker 4: to Jessica.

- 30:08Speaker 8: your hand a long time ago.
- 30:12Speaker 4: I tried to smile.
- 30:13Speaker 3: As he talked about the day.
- 30:16Speaker 4: We got Jimbo on.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Jimbo at Florida State.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Jimbo's at Florida State. He looks rich. That's a nice
- 30:26Speaker 4: suit he's wearing. Florida State SMU.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I got the ponies all over Florida State tonight. Man,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I do, too, because Florida State, I didn't think they'd
- 30:34Speaker 1: put it all in.
- 30:34Speaker 4: They didn't look very good. Talk about a coach that's
- 30:37Speaker 4: spinning his wheels, it seems that way. Yeah. That's another
- 30:41Speaker 4: place where they have high expectations, and do they have
- 30:45Speaker 4: all the weapons at their hands to be a top-ten
- 30:50Speaker 4: program anymore? You mentioned Baylor-Auburn. That was an ugly game, Rusty.
- 30:54Speaker 3: That was a really ugly game.
- 30:55Speaker 4: A really ugly game.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Yeah, Auburn's not very good, and Baylor's not very good either.
- 30:59Speaker 1: What did you think about going for two there? I
- 31:02Speaker 1: salute Baylor for going for two.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Yeah, if they execute, they win.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, because... it was hurting people's eyes to
- 31:09Speaker 3: watch that game. And it was like, so we might
- 31:11Speaker 3: as well get it over with.
- 31:12Speaker 4: I saw enough of that game to say like, wow,
- 31:15Speaker 4: I'm glad I'm not covering that game. Yes. Just boring. Uh, yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 4: it wasn't, it wasn't great for sure.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Uh, I'm online cause I wasn't watching the game where
- 31:26Speaker 1: I was watching the LSU game. I was watching the Rangers, unfortunately,
- 31:29Speaker 1: Saturday night and flipping around. Um, I missed my first
- 31:35Speaker 1: season opener in about 47 years, but I.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Had good reason. It was a good excuse to do it.
- 31:43Speaker 1: So I'm watching, and so I'm on Twitter, and Twitter goes,
- 31:50Speaker 1: Michigan has just lost to Western Michigan. And it's just
- 31:54Speaker 1: one after another after another. They've just lost to Western Michigan.
- 31:57Speaker 4: And I went, holy crud, they've lost to Western Michigan.
- 32:00Speaker 4: What in the world?
- 32:02Speaker 1: And then I'm looking and my daughter texts me and
- 32:05Speaker 1: she's got, you know, robbed, you know, and I'm going.
- 32:09Speaker 4: What are you talking about?
- 32:10Speaker 1: And then it starts coming up that, no, wait a minute.
- 32:16Speaker 4: They got another play.
- 32:18Speaker 1: And do you think anybody knew that there was a
- 32:23Speaker 1: secret Big Ten clock in the Big Ten office that
- 32:27Speaker 1: kept the official score?
- 32:28Speaker 4: I mean, the official time?
- 32:30Speaker 3: No, I had no idea.
- 32:31Speaker 4: Have you ever heard of that? Never heard of that.
- 32:34Speaker 8: I've heard of secret newsletters, but I've not heard of
- 32:38Speaker 8: secret plots.
- 32:39Speaker 4: Mike McKenzie's clock operator. Exactly. Ridiculous.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Robbery, ridiculous.
- 32:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I just hate that for those guys.
- 32:47Speaker 11: I do too.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Well, where you live in a time is, and you're right,
- 32:50Speaker 4: I found out, I didn't watch any of the games,
- 32:52Speaker 4: just the replays, but to know that, okay, the NFL,
- 32:57Speaker 4: they use the clock often. On TV, like what you watch,
- 33:01Speaker 4: but in the Big Ten, they have a different clock
- 33:03Speaker 4: than what's on TV. They have a different clock. Their
- 33:04Speaker 4: own clock. Which doesn't make any sense. It makes no sense.
- 33:07Speaker 4: How many times do you see things come down to
- 33:09Speaker 4: one second or two seconds?
- 33:10Speaker 1: I would argue even, and they're showing it here as
- 33:12Speaker 1: we're talking about it, but even with their own clock,
- 33:16Speaker 1: it was still zero. It was still zero. I've seen
- 33:19Speaker 1: all the pictures and all the stuff.
- 33:21Speaker 8: I have, too, and it's zero.
- 33:23Speaker 4: You know, that's a brother of the A & M
- 33:25Speaker 4: soccer player. Trinity Buchanan, that's her brother made the catch. Oh, no,
- 33:29Speaker 4: I didn't know that. Senior soccer player. It was a
- 33:32Speaker 4: great catch. Great catch. It was a great catch. Her
- 33:34Speaker 4: brother made the catch for the touchdown.
- 33:36Speaker 1: But they don't have a quarterback. They play Oklahoma this week.
- 33:38Speaker 1: It could get worse at Michigan. But I am a
- 33:41Speaker 1: Kyle Whittingham fan because of his style. And he's just
- 33:47Speaker 1: a gritty, rushing, fundamental type guy. I don't think he
- 33:53Speaker 1: doesn't have a quarterback.
- 33:55Speaker 4: Right now. He thought he did, but he doesn't.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Uh, so it's going to take them a year or
- 34:00Speaker 1: two in this day and age. I don't know if
- 34:02Speaker 1: you have a year or two with all these fan bases, but,
- 34:06Speaker 1: but if they will be patient, I still think Kyle
- 34:09Speaker 1: Whittingham is a heck.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Of a football coach. He, he, he, he may get
- 34:14Speaker 4: beat this next week. Uh, I'm interested. You're going to
- 34:17Speaker 4: give him a couple, even two, three years. I don't
- 34:19Speaker 4: think Michigan fires guys that quick. I hope not.
- 34:22Speaker 8: Uh, Yeah, I don't know because they could be in
- 34:26Speaker 8: for a long, long season. I mean, Michigan, that was
- 34:31Speaker 8: not very impressive.
- 34:32Speaker 4: I didn't watch any of the games, so I can't
- 34:33Speaker 4: make a comment. I didn't either.
- 34:35Speaker 1: I mean, I just saw the score, but it's Western Michigan.
- 34:37Speaker 1: But losing to Western Michigan can't be bad. They should
- 34:40Speaker 1: be winning 50-0 like A & M did.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Yeah, but they got beat by Appalachian State one year.
- 34:45Speaker 4: Oh, I remember that. That's been a little while ago.
- 34:46Speaker 3: Oh, but so did Texas A & M, didn't it?
- 34:48Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, not so long ago. Maybe Lloyd Carr will
- 34:53Speaker 4: be on there a little bit with Jimbo. Lloyd Carr.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Maybe Bo will come back. But, yeah, they don't have
- 35:00Speaker 1: a quarterback. You don't have a quarterback, as we've said.
- 35:03Speaker 1: You're in trouble.
- 35:04Speaker 8: It was not a great weekend for the Big 12,
- 35:07Speaker 8: I didn't think. And I thought Tex Tech just kind
- 35:09Speaker 8: of looked mediocre.
- 35:10Speaker 3: I didn't get to see that game.
- 35:12Speaker 4: I didn't get to see that game. I just saw
- 35:14Speaker 4: a couple of highlights.
- 35:15Speaker 8: Oklahoma State just got whipped by Tulsa.
- 35:17Speaker 4: I saw that score. That's not good.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I laughed.
- 35:20Speaker 4: That's not good.
- 35:21Speaker 15: Wow.
- 35:21Speaker 3: I mean, that is really, really bad.
- 35:24Speaker 4: BYU apparently kicked butt. Arizona State did. Arizona did.
- 35:30Speaker 3: But Houston wasn't very impressive against Oregon State.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Houston was not very impressive. Their stats were great. I
- 35:36Speaker 4: watched enough of that game to have concerns about Houston. Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 4: They should have won that game. I didn't think Wegman
- 35:42Speaker 4: looked that good. Much more easily.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Well, I tell you what. They go to Lubbock, is
- 35:48Speaker 1: it a week from Saturday, I believe? They go to
- 35:50Speaker 1: Lubbock a week from Saturday. So we'll know more about Houston,
- 35:54Speaker 1: I think, then.
- 35:56Speaker 8: Yeah, Tex-Tex got Oregon State this weekend at Oregon State,
- 36:00Speaker 8: and then the next week they've got Houston in Lubbock.
- 36:04Speaker 4: Yes. I'm with you, Chip. When you're Michigan or those teams,
- 36:09Speaker 4: in today's world of college football with the NIL and
- 36:12Speaker 4: all the money, how can you not have a good quarterback?
- 36:15Speaker 4: I mean, everybody wants to be a starter, and you
- 36:19Speaker 4: should have your pick of the lot almost when you're
- 36:21Speaker 4: looking at the top, what, 48, 50, Division I players.
- 36:25Speaker 4: I mean, good, powerful conference guys. If you're Michigan, you've
- 36:28Speaker 4: got to have a quarterback. I'm sorry.
- 36:30Speaker 10: I agree.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Totally. I mean, if you don't, that's bad. I didn't
- 36:35Speaker 4: get to watch Penn State under Matt Campbell. They won easily.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I'm trying to think what else that I saw because
- 36:46Speaker 1: I did watch lots of football games this weekend. I
- 36:48Speaker 1: tried to. There's just so many bad football matchups. It
- 36:52Speaker 1: wasn't a great weekend. I don't know, you know, I'm
- 36:58Speaker 1: looking at this weekend. Oklahoma and Michigan has the star power,
- 37:03Speaker 1: but after what happened, you know, you wonder. But then
- 37:06Speaker 1: you also wonder, you know, it's a proud program with
- 37:11Speaker 1: a good coach. I'm not sure that Oklahoma can just
- 37:15Speaker 1: waltz in and just cause Michigan to happen to what
- 37:20Speaker 1: that game was, waltz in and expect to come out
- 37:23Speaker 1: with a, 14 or 17-point win on Saturday.
- 37:26Speaker 4: I'll tell you what, Oklahoma's got a defensive travel. Oh,
- 37:29Speaker 4: I know they have a defense. You're right. They're going
- 37:31Speaker 4: to force turnovers wherever they play. You're right. They're just
- 37:34Speaker 4: too good.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I tell you, there are a couple of rivalry games
- 37:39Speaker 1: that aren't going to merit national attention, but Missouri and Kansas,
- 37:45Speaker 1: they hate each other. Now, while they have played in
- 37:49Speaker 1: basketball fairly regularly... They have not played regularly in football,
- 37:56Speaker 1: and they hate each other. I don't know about Kansas.
- 38:02Speaker 1: They played a nobody and won by 50, so I
- 38:05Speaker 1: don't know. Missouri played a nobody and won substantially. I
- 38:09Speaker 1: didn't see them play. Then Iowa State and Iowa play
- 38:12Speaker 1: this week. That's always a big early season, you know,
- 38:15Speaker 1: rivalry kind of game.
- 38:16Speaker 4: That's a good one. I don't know.
- 38:17Speaker 1: How the quality of these games are going to be,
- 38:21Speaker 1: but I do know the intensity of the games will
- 38:24Speaker 1: be there.
- 38:25Speaker 4: To me, that's what you're looking for.
- 38:26Speaker 8: Well, all eyes are going to be in Austin.
- 38:29Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 38:30Speaker 8: I mean, Texas and Ohio State.
- 38:34Speaker 4: I think there is immense pressure on Sarkanyan to win
- 38:37Speaker 4: this football game. Do you really? I do.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Not– I'm not saying he's getting fired or any of
- 38:41Speaker 1: that if he doesn't win the football game. But he
- 38:45Speaker 1: hasn't beaten Ohio State, and he hasn't beaten Kirby. And
- 38:50Speaker 1: he keeps being reminded of that. And he's done fine.
- 38:54Speaker 1: He's been to two semifinals, so let's not lose sight
- 38:56Speaker 1: of that.
- 38:57Speaker 4: But he didn't go last year.
- 38:58Speaker 1: He didn't go last year. He lost a terrible game
- 39:01Speaker 1: to Florida.
- 39:04Speaker 4: He had a chance.
- 39:07Speaker 1: In Columbus, but he still can't score within the 10-yard line.
- 39:13Speaker 4: In the red zone.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I just think there's a lot more pressure on him
- 39:18Speaker 1: than there is on Ryan Day on Saturday.
- 39:20Speaker 8: Well, Arch was terrible in that opener last year.
- 39:22Speaker 4: He was. He was horrible.
- 39:23Speaker 8: And I expect him.
- 39:24Speaker 3: To be good this week.
- 39:26Speaker 4: He will be better.
- 39:27Speaker 1: He was pretty good on Saturday, but again, it's hard.
- 39:29Speaker 1: You know, it's hard to tell against Texas State.
- 39:33Speaker 4: Texas State's pretty good, too. Yeah, and that's what everybody said.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And I did like the quarterback.
- 39:38Speaker 1: He had 2,000-yard receivers. I thought the defense gave up
- 39:44Speaker 1: some between the 20s, but they got turnovers. They turned
- 39:48Speaker 1: it over. They had a score. And that's Muschamp. He's
- 39:51Speaker 1: going to be aggressive. And that's all he preaches is turnovers.
- 39:57Speaker 1: And what did they hold him to? I don't know
- 39:59Speaker 1: what was the final score. They scored seven points. Texas
- 40:02Speaker 1: State scored?
- 40:03Speaker 3: It was 51-7 or something like that.
- 40:05Speaker 4: 59-7 maybe. 59-7. I think you're right, Chip, because I
- 40:08Speaker 4: think the pressures on Texas– And Sarkeesian, because if you
- 40:12Speaker 4: lose that game, you lost at home.
- 40:14Speaker 16: Yes.
- 40:15Speaker 4: Tougher to get back to the college football playoff. There's
- 40:17Speaker 4: no doubt. And you don't want to start the year
- 40:19Speaker 4: with a loss. Ohio State. Already just recently won the
- 40:23Speaker 4: national championship. They're on the road, so they'll get credit
- 40:26Speaker 4: even if they lose from being on the road.
- 40:27Speaker 1: By the way, they beat Texas on the way to
- 40:29Speaker 1: winning that national championship.
- 40:32Speaker 4: And that's an early Heisman kind of elimination. It's an
- 40:35Speaker 4: early Heisman deal. I think Texas almost has to win
- 40:39Speaker 4: this game. Have you seen the spread on that game?
- 40:43Speaker 4: I haven't seen the spread on that one. Would you
- 40:45Speaker 4: check for a stand and see what the spread on
- 40:47Speaker 4: that game is? I don't know. I'm going to guess
- 40:50Speaker 4: it's right. Close to even. Which game? Ohio State, Texas.
- 40:54Speaker 4: I only bet $ 1, 000 a time.
- 40:56Speaker 2: And just take $ 1, 000.
- 40:58Speaker 4: That's dinero.
- 41:00Speaker 8: Spread is Texas at minus.
- 41:02Speaker 4: One and a half.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Okay.
- 41:04Speaker 4: Minus one and a half. That's about what I'd think.
- 41:07Speaker 4: About a toss-up game.
- 41:09Speaker 8: I don't necessarily think this is a must-win for Texas.
- 41:12Speaker 8: I mean, I think it's an important game for them.
- 41:16Speaker 8: I don't know if they have.
- 41:18Speaker 3: To win this game, though, because.
- 41:20Speaker 8: I think the quality of the opponent, obviously.
- 41:24Speaker 4: Well, you think at plays.
- 41:26Speaker 8: It didn't hurt them last year. What hurt them was
- 41:28Speaker 8: losing to Florida. True, true, true.
- 41:30Speaker 4: But I would argue that if they were.
- 41:33Speaker 8: Takes the margin there, yeah.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but if they were 10-2 and not 9-3, they
- 41:39Speaker 1: would have gone no matter who they won or lost to.
- 41:41Speaker 4: Yeah, had they beat Ohio.
- 41:42Speaker 8: State, yeah.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Right, yeah.
- 41:45Speaker 8: And so, yeah, it could be a very important win
- 41:47Speaker 8: for them, but I'm also not saying that that's vital
- 41:50Speaker 8: for them.
- 41:51Speaker 1: I'm interested to watch because I think they're pretty good,
- 41:56Speaker 1: but you always have to wade through the hype with them, right?
- 41:59Speaker 10: Yep.
- 42:01Speaker 1: And we'll see how good Texas State is. They made
- 42:05Speaker 1: them look really terrible. They're supposed to win like that
- 42:08Speaker 1: because it's Texas State and the University of Texas.
- 42:11Speaker 13: Right.
- 42:11Speaker 4: They're supposed to do that.
- 42:13Speaker 8: Well, I'm excited because I'm going to watch that whole
- 42:15Speaker 8: game because A & M will be done.
- 42:17Speaker 4: They'll be finished.
- 42:18Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 42:18Speaker 8: There won't be another game that I'm really interested in.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 42:21Speaker 8: I'm kind of interested in Utah and Arkansas.
- 42:24Speaker 4: Interesting.
- 42:25Speaker 6: Really?
- 42:25Speaker 8: I didn't know where they play that game. They're playing
- 42:27Speaker 8: that game in Utah. That's a late game. It's like
- 42:29Speaker 8: a 9 o'clock game. What did Arkansas do, by the way?
- 42:32Speaker 8: They weren't very good, right? They weren't that impressive.
- 42:35Speaker 3: No, they were not.
- 42:35Speaker 8: And so I think that they're, man, Arkansas is just Arkansas, right?
- 42:41Speaker 3: Right now they are.
- 42:42Speaker 1: I mean, I think they're among the last two teams
- 42:45Speaker 1: you look at when you're looking at the, you know, CeCe,
- 42:48Speaker 1: you had me pick the list.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Arkansas or Kentucky. That's who I had on the bottom.
- 42:52Speaker 15: Really?
- 42:52Speaker 4: Arkansas or Kentucky? Arkansas or Kentucky. That's who I put
- 42:54Speaker 4: on the bottom. Okay.
- 42:56Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, it's going to be interesting, obviously, because.
- 42:59Speaker 1: I have Vanderbilt falling a little bit just because of
- 43:02Speaker 1: the quarterbacks.
- 43:03Speaker 4: I don't know what the quarterbacks are doing.
- 43:05Speaker 8: They beat Austin Peay 28-9, which was.
- 43:08Speaker 4: Not real impressive. That's not great.
- 43:10Speaker 8: And then Arkansas ended up beating who'd they play? I'm
- 43:17Speaker 8: looking right at it.
- 43:19Speaker 4: Who'd Arkansas play? North Alabama, 31-14.
- 43:20Speaker 3: That's not good. That doesn't sound good.
- 43:26Speaker 4: They're at Utah, did you say, Rusty? Yeah, at Utah. Okay,
- 43:29Speaker 4: Utah won easily this week, I know. Yeah, and Utah's
- 43:32Speaker 4: ranked top 25. Yes, they are.
- 43:34Speaker 3: And so they are one of the better teams, I think,
- 43:37Speaker 3: in the Big 12.
- 43:37Speaker 4: I think you're right. BYU. Top four, probably, right now. Oh, yeah.
- 43:42Speaker 3: And maybe Arizona State.
- 43:43Speaker 4: I do know Oklahoma State is not one of the.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Better teams in the Big 12. I would agree with
- 43:47Speaker 3: you right there.
- 43:47Speaker 8: And they play Oregon this week.
- 43:50Speaker 4: At home. They're hosting Oregon. Yeah.
- 43:53Speaker 3: I think LSU wins it.
- 43:55Speaker 8: I don't know. No, I'm kidding.
- 43:56Speaker 4: No, you're kidding.
- 43:57Speaker 8: I think Oregon has to bounce back, and I think
- 44:01Speaker 8: it's a big game.
- 44:01Speaker 4: For Dante Moore. And again, we don't know. It's the
- 44:05Speaker 4: first week, so we need more data.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Because I think Boise State looked pretty dang good on Saturday.
- 44:15Speaker 1: I think Louisville looked pretty dang good last night. But
- 44:19Speaker 1: time will tell these things, right? I think A &
- 44:22Speaker 1: M looked pretty dang good Saturday.
- 44:24Speaker 8: But you wonder about Ole Miss' defense.
- 44:27Speaker 4: I do. Big time. Big time. Yeah. Because that's who
- 44:31Speaker 4: they are.
- 44:31Speaker 1: I've got to tell you, if Ke'wan Lacy's out at
- 44:34Speaker 1: any point, they.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Said thigh bruise. That guy is a Heisman caliber guy.
- 44:41Speaker 4: He's a man among boys. He's the best running back
- 44:43Speaker 4: in the country.
- 44:44Speaker 8: Did you see how much money they spent advertising in
- 44:47Speaker 8: Las Vegas and New York City?
- 44:49Speaker 1: Three quarters of a million. They were at Times Square
- 44:51Speaker 1: and they were on the Sphere. But I will argue
- 44:55Speaker 1: that Sphere thing went viral. And I think that that
- 44:59Speaker 1: was brilliant. Because they got their money's worth in terms
- 45:02Speaker 1: of advertising return dollars.
- 45:04Speaker 4: I promise you.
- 45:05Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right.
- 45:06Speaker 4: Because it went, and it was cool looking, too. It
- 45:08Speaker 4: was cool looking. It was cool. So you saw it, too, right?
- 45:11Speaker 8: Yeah, anything in that sphere is cool looking.
- 45:14Speaker 4: I thought that was brilliant marketing. You get three-quarters of
- 45:16Speaker 4: a million people to look at it? I mean, I
- 45:17Speaker 4: thought it was brilliant.
- 45:18Speaker 8: The coolest thing was when they had the Rangers after
- 45:20Speaker 8: they won the World Series. Now, that was cool.
- 45:22Speaker 4: The sphere?
- 45:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that was really cool.
- 45:24Speaker 4: I need a picture of that.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll find a picture.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Do you have that? I need to get that framed.
- 45:29Speaker 4: You guys need to sell top of this building.
- 45:30Speaker 1: And the longer we get away from that, the more
- 45:32Speaker 1: I'm going to look at that picture.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Me too.
- 45:35Speaker 8: I'm still sporting my cup, bro.
- 45:38Speaker 1: The Rangers Report is brought to you by Schulte Roofing
- 45:42Speaker 1: and the Decker Financial Group.
- 45:44Speaker 14: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 45:46Speaker 14: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around, and then
- 45:48Speaker 14: I found Schulte Roofing, and boy, I'm glad I did.
- 45:51Speaker 14: The folks at Schulte guided me every step of the way.

- 45:56Speaker 14: out-of-pocket cost would be after insurance. They took the complication
- 46:00Speaker 14: out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They took off
- 46:03Speaker 14: the damaged roof, put on the new roof, did all
- 46:05Speaker 14: the cleanup, and I had my new roof in one day.
- 46:08Speaker 13: Schulte Roofing, the home of the bulletproof roof.

- 46:54Speaker 11: The Rangers and Rays had a wild affair yesterday in
- 46:56Speaker 11: the final game of the four-game set. Tampa Bay quickly
- 46:58Speaker 11: jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four spot
- 47:00Speaker 11: in the second. Texas would get one back with a
- 47:02Speaker 11: solo homer by Jake Berger, but the big inning came
- 47:05Speaker 11: in the bottom of the fourth when Texas scored four,
- 47:07Speaker 11: including Berger's second homer of the night.
- 47:10Speaker 10: Seymour, the high set, the kick, and the pitch. And
- 47:12Speaker 10: there's a drive deep out into left center. Did you,
- 47:15Speaker 10: Jake Berger? Yes, you did. He hits the back wall
- 47:20Speaker 10: in the Tampa Bay bullpen. Two ABs, two home runs.
- 47:25Speaker 10: This with a man on. It's now 5-3. Rangers back
- 47:29Speaker 10: to within a couple.
- 47:30Speaker 11: Justin Foskey would follow it up with a 2-RBI double
- 47:33Speaker 11: to tie the game. Texas played two more in the
- 47:35Speaker 11: 5th and one in the 8th for an 8-6 victory.
- 47:38Speaker 11: The team is off today before taking on the Mariners
- 47:40Speaker 11: tomorrow at 840. With your Texas Rangers report, I'm Dylan Moore.
- 47:44Speaker 17: One of the biggest potential threats to your retirement plan

- 47:53Speaker 17: help you and your loved ones better prepare for the future.

- 48:15Speaker 13: Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song
- 48:24Speaker 13: and make it better. Remember to let.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Her into your heart.
- 48:33Speaker 13: Then you can start to make it better. Hey Jude,
- 48:43Speaker 13: don't be afraid.
- 48:46Speaker 4: Welcome back.
- 48:47Speaker 10: Thanks.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Robert Cessna, Rusty Burson brought to you by in tech
- 48:51Speaker 1: and first financial bank every Monday. We finally have games
- 48:56Speaker 1: to talk about. We have one more for this weekend. Not,
- 49:02Speaker 1: as we mentioned, it's not a great weekend upcoming. It
- 49:07Speaker 1: would have been a great weekend upcoming, in my opinion,
- 49:10Speaker 1: had Michigan been able to beat Western Michigan.
- 49:15Speaker 4: By a lot.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Or just actually beat them, period. actually beat them without
- 49:23Speaker 1: help from the league. Probably would– I mean, those are
- 49:27Speaker 1: two of the top five or six programs in college
- 49:31Speaker 1: football history.
- 49:31Speaker 8: I'm going to watch Kansas-Missouri on Friday night.
- 49:34Speaker 4: It's Friday night? Oh, good.
- 49:36Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 49:36Speaker 4: I'm glad.
- 49:37Speaker 8: I mean, because that's at Kansas and, I mean, Missouri.
- 49:40Speaker 8: I want to see Missouri because I thought they looked
- 49:42Speaker 8: pretty good.
- 49:43Speaker 4: I didn't get to see them. They weren't playing anybody.
- 49:45Speaker 4: I didn't get to see that game.
- 49:46Speaker 3: I want to see how good they are.
- 49:47Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Like I said, they– hate each other, and that goes
- 49:53Speaker 1: back to the Civil War. That goes back a ways.
- 49:56Speaker 1: There is a deep-seated hatred between these two fan bases.
- 50:01Speaker 4: Eli's a Kiffin wannabe. He just doesn't have the success
- 50:05Speaker 4: of the team that he did. He's funny. He's a
- 50:08Speaker 4: great quote. He's a great quote.
- 50:10Speaker 16: Go ahead.
- 50:11Speaker 8: You mentioned coaches.
- 50:15Speaker 1: I thought Lance Leipold did a fantastic job rebuilding that
- 50:19Speaker 1: Kansas program. They were relevant for a while, and they
- 50:22Speaker 1: were pretty good. And they've kind of fallen off now.
- 50:25Speaker 4: His name was mentioned. You're right.
- 50:27Speaker 1: He was mentioned to move up the ranks, and he said, no,
- 50:30Speaker 1: I'm staying here. And you're going, well, okay, because it
- 50:34Speaker 1: looks like he's building something. His quarterback got hurt two
- 50:40Speaker 1: years ago. Daniels, he was building everything, and then Last
- 50:44Speaker 1: year just wasn't very good, you know, coming off the injury.
- 50:48Speaker 8: I also kind of am interested in Kentucky hosting Alabama
- 50:52Speaker 8: because I don't think, like you said, Kentucky's real good.
- 50:55Speaker 4: We didn't talk about Alabama.
- 50:56Speaker 3: But I don't know about Alabama either.
- 50:58Speaker 4: True. I saw a few plays. I saw a few plays, too, Cease.
- 51:02Speaker 4: One impressed.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Freshman quarterback. Apparently got better as the game went on.
- 51:06Speaker 1: I was just flipping, so I didn't see.
- 51:09Speaker 4: A lot of that. I know they have.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Talent, because they're Alabama. A lot of it is young.
- 51:16Speaker 1: The quarterback's a freshman. But again, from what I read,
- 51:21Speaker 1: he improved as the game went on.
- 51:24Speaker 8: Yeah, I just have no opinion on who Alabama is.
- 51:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know either. I don't know who Kentucky is.
- 51:32Speaker 4: I don't think they're going to be very good.
- 51:33Speaker 8: I'm interested in Kentucky because that's the SEC opener for
- 51:37Speaker 8: A & M.
- 51:37Speaker 4: Plus the coach made quite a splash. Yeah, if they're good,
- 51:42Speaker 4: they're good because of him. Yeah, that's what he said. Exactly.
- 51:46Speaker 4: I like it. You like somebody like that. I like that.
- 51:49Speaker 4: Back it up? Yeah. Well, Cignetti backed it up, right?
- 51:54Speaker 4: Without a doubt. Did you watch any of Indiana?
- 51:56Speaker 8: I watched a little bit of North Texas and Indiana.
- 51:58Speaker 4: Yeah, me too. I thought North Texas played pretty well.
- 52:01Speaker 8: I thought they hung around for a while.
- 52:03Speaker 4: They did hang around. I thought they played pretty well.
- 52:05Speaker 3: I thought they were pretty gutsy.
- 52:08Speaker 1: They were. Cignetti has a lot he can yell at
- 52:13Speaker 1: him about this week.
- 52:14Speaker 15: Oh, yeah.
- 52:15Speaker 4: Right, which he loves.
- 52:16Speaker 8: I really like some of the Cignetti commercials that are
- 52:19Speaker 8: out there.
- 52:19Speaker 4: I love the State Farm commercial. That is real.
- 52:22Speaker 9: Smile, Coach.
- 52:23Speaker 8: I have a smile. He goes, I am literally so excited.
- 52:27Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:29Speaker 8: And it's like, you know, deadpan.
- 52:30Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 52:31Speaker 3: He goes, I can't really tell, Coach.
- 52:33Speaker 1: So that's the other thing you get when you watch
- 52:35Speaker 1: all day. You get the new commercials. You got the
- 52:38Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin, Dr.
- 52:38Speaker 13: Pepper.
- 52:38Speaker 8: Well, I love the fact that he's having fun.
- 52:40Speaker 3: With it, right?
- 52:40Speaker 11: Exactly.
- 52:41Speaker 3: Yeah, and Lane Kiffin with the lanes and all that.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:44Speaker 4: Illegal lane change. I like that. Put the window up.
- 52:48Speaker 4: Put the window up.
- 52:50Speaker 1: So because of the Cignetti commercial on.
- 52:54Speaker 4: You change insurance.
- 52:55Speaker 13: No.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Making rounds is the old Tom Landry American Express commercial.
- 53:04Speaker 4: 1982.
- 53:06Speaker 1: And I just about fell off my couch and I
- 53:08Speaker 1: bet all America did when they saw Tom Landry in
- 53:11Speaker 1: that floor-length duster with the cowboy hat, walk into that bar,
- 53:17Speaker 1: and do that American Express commercial.
- 53:20Speaker 4: There was just nothing like that. That's awesome.
- 53:23Speaker 3: I didn't see that one.
- 53:24Speaker 4: You need to pull it up. I remember it.
- 53:27Speaker 1: It's like American Express comes in handy when you're surrounded
- 53:30Speaker 1: by redskins, and all of the team have their uniforms
- 53:34Speaker 1: on right in the bar, and he's just as dry
- 53:38Speaker 1: as he could be, just like Signetti, and.
- 53:40Speaker 4: You're going, That's Tom Landry. Is that Tom Landry? One
- 53:44Speaker 4: of my favorite commercials is back with the spin is,
- 53:47Speaker 4: what day is it? What day is it? The camel.
- 53:51Speaker 4: I love that commercial. I laugh every time it comes on.
- 53:56Speaker 8: My wife and I were commenting, how many insurance commercials
- 53:59Speaker 8: are there?
- 53:59Speaker 4: There's a lot. Oh, my gosh. You've got to have insurance.
- 54:02Speaker 4: You have to have insurance. There's a lot. I hope
- 54:04Speaker 4: Dabo's got insurance. He doesn't need it. Firing insurance. He
- 54:09Speaker 4: has a $ 53 million buyout.
- 54:10Speaker 1: Oh, oh.
- 54:11Speaker 4: We just saw Jimbo on the TV. He doesn't need it.
- 54:15Speaker 4: He's doing fine.
- 54:16Speaker 3: I like the Mayhem commercials.
- 54:18Speaker 4: I love Mayhem. They're all good, but that's in my
- 54:23Speaker 4: top three. I just chuckle every time I see that camel.
- 54:26Speaker 4: I just love it. Now they've got Chris Hollick. Come on, Mike.
- 54:29Speaker 4: What day is it, Mike? What day is it? And
- 54:31Speaker 4: Mike Tirico. Yeah. What day is it, Mike?
- 54:33Speaker 8: I love it.
- 54:34Speaker 4: Great. Yes. Yes. It doesn't make much to make me happy.
- 54:39Speaker 8: This is the information we bring to you.
- 54:41Speaker 4: This is what we try to do every week. I
- 54:44Speaker 4: put it up there with, where's the beef? Where's the beef?
- 54:47Speaker 8: That's going way back. You and I are the only
- 54:53Speaker 8: ones young enough to remember.
- 54:55Speaker 4: You remember Clara Peller? I remember her name.
- 54:59Speaker 1: I can't remember what I had for lunch, but I
- 55:01Speaker 1: remember Clara Peller's name doing where's the beef.
- 55:04Speaker 4: That is sad.
- 55:05Speaker 1: On that note, Next Monday, we'll have another game to
- 55:11Speaker 1: talk about.
- 55:11Speaker 4: A better game to talk about. Well, maybe not. It
- 55:14Speaker 4: will be. We'll see. If he beats them more than 50-0, well,
- 55:17Speaker 4: holy cow. We're in for a good year. Rusty will
- 55:19Speaker 4: walk the whole year from Maryland to Long. Thanks, guys.
